The world of anime is full of magical girls and everyone has at least seen ONE series of this type. In the early 90’s most of us started to wonder into the world of magic with the beautiful Sailor Moon and by the last years of that decade, we were introduced to the adorable Sakura Kinomoto. Cardcaptor Sakura got rid of that kind-of-embarrassing scenes of magical girls transformations and introduced a more down to earth, fashion based “battle” dresses made by her best friend Tomoyo. Cardcaptor Sakura outfits were one of the many highlights of the series not only because of Sakura, but as well as the clothes worn by Shaoran Li, Meiling and even the personifications of the Clow Cards. About Cardcaptor Sakura
Cardcaptor Sakura, one of the most popular anime series that has become an all-time favorite for boys and girls alike. This year Cardcaptor Sakura is celebrating its 20th anniversary telling us the story of Sakura Kinomoto, a cute 10 year old girl that lives her life normally, until she opens a magic book, and releases by accident the magical “Clow Cards”, awakening their Guardians: Yue and Keroberos, who tasks Sakura with the mission of returning the 52 cards deck, and avoid the calamities that they’ll bring upon the world when they release their power.
One of the aspects that makes this anime so successful, is the “Kawaii” fashion that is shown in every episode; thanks to the hard work of the charismatic Tomoyo Daidouji, who joins the adventures of her best friend Sakura, filming every moment of her adventures and preparing for her in every occasion, wonderful sets of clothes and its accessories, presenting more than 60 different changes of outfits at the length of the series. These cute attires, that in many occasions are allusive to the card that Sakura have to capture, became the favorites of the viewers attracting many fans to the series. This show was aired more than 15 years ago, and still continues to be present in every important anime convention, standing out among the cosplay fans and inspiring current fashion apparels for young girls in Japan and the followers of “Lolita fashion”. With its huge success across the world, Cardcaptor Sakura is, for a number of people, one of the first magical girl shows they watched, and so has inevitably left a lasting impression. After accidentally opening the Book of Clow and releasing the fifty two cards held within, it’s down to Sakura Kinomoto to get them back and to ensure that they don’t cause too much havoc while they’re loose.
With her pretty pink and white outfit, and funny flying bear companion, Sakura is about as close as you can get to the definition of magical girl. A constant force for good, the purity and kindness that guide Sakura’s actions are that which we’ve come to expect from the genre, and makes her efforts heartwarming to watch. Besides that, the variety of the cards in the show lends her an abundance of different powers and abilities to make use of, until eventually, within the scope of the story, she becomes a terrifyingly powerful magician. Sakura is a joy to watch, both for her personality and for the interesting battles and solutions she comes up with.
