In all of fiction, setting matters. And when it comes down to the nitty gritty of visual media, the place the characters live in, work in, or go out to, should have something to say about the characters themselves and the world in which they live in. Of course, some of them can give us some good old HGTV envy while others have the comfy, homey air that make us want to live there ourselves. With that, here are 10 of the best rooms in Anime.

10. Gilgamesh’s Royal ‘Balcony’ –Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works

[imageCharacterWithAnime character='fate stay night Gilgamesh' anime='FateStay Night Unlimited Blade Works dvd']
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" Oct 12, 2014 to Dec 28, 2014 "]

It’s a scene I often think of when I think of the Fate-verse, Gilgamesh, looking out at the rest of Babylon, with his pet Lion by his side. Gilgamesh is a seriously domineering dude who has a palace that’s fitting of his station. It’s expansive, it’s got an amazing view, and it’s as lavish as you’d expect of a pharaoh or, well, a Sumerian legendary king. Plus, there’s top quality wine all the time and that Lion looks like a pretty serious upgrade over your average housecat.

9. Misato Katsuragi’s Living room – Neon Genesis Evangelion

[imageCharacterWithAnime character='Evangelion Misato Katsuragi cosplay00' anime='evangelion DVD']
[Information episodes=" 26 " aired=" Oct 3, 1995 to Mar 27, 1996 "]

There was something so plain about Misato’s house as a whole but something that became really familiar throughout the course of the series. It looks like the apartment’s you see in a lot of Anime. But the living room is where a lot of the characters throughout Evangelion would go, hang-out, talk and there were a number of key scenes here and throughout the apartment as a whole. In first few episodes of Evangelion, when the apartment is established as Shinji’s living space, it really does give the feel of ‘home base’ for the series after a few episodes.

8. Maria’s witch haven– Junketsu no Maria

[imageCharacterWithAnime character='Junketsu no Maria Maria' anime='junketsu no maria']
[Information episodes=" 13 " aired=" Apr 07, 2008 to Mar 30, 2009 "]

If you weren’t in the know, Maria’s house would look like just a little shack in the woods somewhere. However, it’s woodland surroundings and its reclusiveness are part of it’s allure. If you ever partake in a little HGTV, Maria’s house is definitely ‘open concept’, it’s really one big room with a lot of different compartments. But there’s everything you need for a comfy, magical existence in the first half of 15th century Europe. It’s an easy stride from a nice peasant village, and of course, you’re likely to run into the exploits of Maria and her various cohorts!

7. Koyomi Araragi’s living room – Nisemonogatari

[imageCharacterWithAnime character='bakemonogatari araragi' anime='dvd Nisemonogatari']
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" Jan 8, 2012 to Mar 18, 2012 "]

Araragi’s living room is pretty wild from an aesthetic point of view. It’s got this dominant white color scheme that make it feel almost translucent and almost otherworldly, which really fits with the tone and visual style of the Monogatari franchise. It has these set-ladders, catwalks and stage lights which give it a fun theater vibe and seem to be some kind of in-universe meta elements to it. And for more spice, it has some neat looking art and couches too. Plus you can’t beat hanging out with the fire sisters!

6. Motoko Kusanagi’s Master Bedroom – Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex

[imageCharacterWithAnime character='ghost in the shell arise Motoko Kusanagi' anime='ghost in the shell stand alone complex dvd']
[Information episodes=" 26 " aired=" Oct 1, 2002 to Mar 25, 2003 "]

Motoko Kusanagi is every bit as imposing as she is admirable, someone you’ll always want to follow, and never want to cross. She’s such a authoritative yet magnetic presence it only makes sense that where she lives has some of the same allure. Cyberpunk architecture often has two extremes, luxurious futurism, or exacerbated urban decay, and Motoko’s house totally exemplifies the latter. We picked the bedroom because of it’s sweet view and… Motoko has this implied Yuri cyborg harem thing going on? Just another reason the Major, and her place, is on another level.

5. The production office - Shirobako

Shirobako dvd
[Information episodes=" 24 " aired=" Oct 9, 2014 to Mar 26, 2015 "]

Sometimes where you work does really feel like home. I’ve had the luxury of working some jobs I really loved, with co-workers I loved, and in that situation, an office sometimes can just feel downright comfy. That’s the feeling I get from the production staff office in Shirobako. It may be full of files on the wall’s, and doesn’t have any fancy, stand-out décor but the desk plan feels open, but not intrusive, kind of like a college library. So many times watching Shirobako and the scenes that take place at Musashino animation, while seeing the various offices, conference rooms, and miscellaneous areas, it's a place I felt could definitely be a work home away from home, and nothing gave me that feeling more than the production office.

4. Hachiken’s Dorm (Gin no Saiji)

[imageCharacterWithAnime character='Yuugo Hachiken Gin no Saji' anime='Silver Spoon dvd']
[Information episodes=" 11 " aired=" Jul 12, 2013 to Sep 20, 2013 "]

Boarding school seem’s pretty intimidating. Hell, living on a college campus was intimidating for me, years after I would have started High School. But Hachiken’s dorm is pretty comfy, when you get down to it. It’s a simple room with bunk beds, and desks, like so many dorms before and after it. But it had windows looking out into a vast countryside, and this is the dorm’s significance. This is Hachiken’s entry-point to the wide world of Agricultural High School and Hokkaido as a whole, and that’s why it’s simplicity is itself an attraction. It helps that’s there’s also sorts of crazy characters going in and out too.

3. Yuuko’s Reception room - xxxHolic

[imageCharacterWithAnime character='Yuuko Ichihara xxxHOLiC' anime='xxxHOLiC dvd']
[Information episodes=" 24 " aired=" Apr 07, 2006 to Sep 29, 2006 "]

Yuuko’s house in xxxholic, while not garish, certainly doesn’t lack for flare. She has all sorts of mystical and magical items which she brings up every now and again, each with it’s own story to tell. Speaking of stories, hanging around here, you’d be sure to hear some tales of the supernatural and how they come into play in human endeavors. It’d be great to just lounge around, and soak in the mystical air that surrounds Yuuko and her house as a whole. Plus, she’s always drinking and eating wonderful foods! Sasuaga, Yuuko! She’s truly living her life correctly!

2. The Light Music Club Practice Room – K-On!!

K-On! dvd
[Information episodes=" 26 " aired=" Apr 7th, 2010 to Sep 29, 2010 "]

It’s really kind of a plain old club room, but the light music club has made it a seriously enviable destination! There’s lots of seriously high-quality silverware all over the place, and of course all the goofy stuff the club members leave lying around as well. It’s also on the top floor of the school, so it seems the light music club has the penthouse, as it were. But the real opportunity is to sit down and indulge in all the amazing tea and desserts the light music club eats! Plus, we you can always hear them practice! Set your clocks to Fuwa Fuwa time, please.

1. Future Gadget Laboratory – Steins;Gate

Steins;Gate dvd
[Information episodes=" 26 " aired=" October 07 1997 to Mar 31, 1998 "]

Something about the Lab in Steins;Gate truly draws you in and makes you feel at home. I’ve seen an image of what a recreation of the Lab would look like in real life, and had an instant desire to live there. It has the feeling of a NEET’s recluse, while also an grad-student apartment where you always visited for casual drinks. Maybe it’s just conditioning from all the wonderful characters and hijinks that goes on in Steins;Gate, especially in the almost slice of lifey first half, but it’s somewhere that has as much charm as any place you can imagine living in.
