Can This Reboot Redeem Bless Online? We Tried Bless Unleashed PS4 Closed Beta!

[ad_top1 class="mb40"]

Maybe you are new to the Bless universe and got excited about Bless Unleashed, an upcoming MMORPG for PC and consoles. However, we're talking about an infamous franchise that already let us down several times in the past, so are there real reasons to get excited? Last weekend, we got to play the PS4 Closed Beta, and we want to share our impressions with you. But first, a history lesson to put you in context!

Bless Online? More Like Mess Online

Almost 10 years ago, MMORPGs were definitely more popular than they are now, but still a fading trend. That's why the announcement of a game called BLESS was so significant to all of us, making us look forward to this impressive game and ultimately giving us hope about a decaying genre. There were banners all over the place. There was no gaming website or forum you visit that wasn't promoting this Korean game, but we were all sad to know there was still no word about a worldwide release. When they finally announced a western version, we couldn't believe our eyes... but Aeria Games shut down the project in 2017, foreshadowing what we all know now. A few months later, though, NEOWIZ announced the game would not only still release but also include several new features, now scheduled for 2018. On June 2018, Bless Online was finally available as an Early Access title, but it ended up being a soulless grindfest game with too many problems for a modern MMORPG: not only the grinding was too intense yet unrewarding, but the story was bland, the core gameplay mechanics felt outdated, and the business model was unappealing to the average player; after all, why would you pay for a faulty, unfinished, P2W-inclined game? Only 4 months later, the global branch of Bless Online was ready for its final version, but people were already aware of all these problems. In fact, the Korean version of Bless was closing its doors at the very same time: the western release was on October 23, while the last KR server closed a few weeks later. The interest was long gone, and not even Bless' conversion to F2P was enough to keep it alive. On September 9, 2019, Bless Online was officially dead, but NEOWIZ and Bandai Namco were already working on a console reboot: Bless Unleashed.

Should You Give Bless Unleashed a Chance?

Bless Unleashed will be a free-to-play title, so that's a huge change. For the general audience, that could be reason enough to give this game a chance, but for us, that can't be an excuse if it fails yet again. As for the story, it's a lore-rich game that has a lot of potential, and this new version definitely takes the time to introduce you to this world and its characters. Of course, it's too similar to other fantasy MMORPG titles, so you won't find anything unique or groundbreaking, which shouldn't be a problem considering it uses a time-tested formula. It's not the most original nor the best plot in the world, but it's better presented than in Bless Online. Just like in the first game, the graphics are breathtaking and way better than your average MMORPG. That being said, some games from 5 or 10 years ago have similar graphics, so although Bless Unleashed looks and feels really good, we're not talking about a game that pushes the envelope either. We have to say that some textures and animations still need some work, and we found several bugs here and there, but fixing the graphic aspects is not that hard if they really want to focus on that. So this game has more-than-decent graphics and a cool story to match; that should be enough, right? Well, not really...

Bless Unleashed's biggest issue is how outdated the core gameplay mechanics feel. As time goes by, fetch quests feel less appealing, but no MMORPG has come up with an alternative that's both interesting and fun. Regardless, most of the quests here feel tedious even for those who love grinding, especially because they also feel unrewarding. To make things worse, Bless Unleash features a combo-based combat system that already proved to be divisive. We like real-time battles, but you can't have good fights with clunky animations and boring combos that force you to mash the same 2 buttons over and over again. If you survive an encounter, you're pretty much forced to craft some health items as regeneration is not a thing in this game... oh, and forget about relying on your stamina (it drains as fast as you run for a couple yards or perform a couple of actions) or skills (cooldown times are not ideal). As you can see, Bless Unleashed is too busy trying to avoid Bless Online's countless mistakes that it forgets about innovation. Need more proof to finally accept how out of touch this game is? Just try creating your first character! All classes are locked to specific races, and we all know how stupid a seemingly robust customization system feels when you can't play as your preferred class/race combination. Sorry, we definitely should have mentioned this earlier... but most of you would have left after reading that.

Final Thoughts

If it was a new IP, we would say that Bless Unleash is an OK-ish MMORPG for those in need of a new virtual world. It's far from perfect, it doesn't bother innovating, but at least it's free and offers a fresh start and the same old rules we're used to. Sadly, it's hard to ignore this franchise's past, and even harder when you see some things remain the same. Bless Unleashed will be out in 2021 for PC and PS4, but it's already out for Xbox One. If you're not too picky, you might like it; just don't get too attached to it, as it has a record of not making it to the second year!

Has Echidna Replaced Rem as Ultimate Waifu? Meet the New Witch of Re:Zero -Starting Life in Another World-!

Fans of Re:Zero aren’t strangers to waifu debates as the series has quite a large cast of potential girls to fall in love with. Despite the numerous ladies to choose from, most viewers of Re:Zero will name one particular above all else and we don’t mean Emilia. Rem has stood as the ultimate waifu of the Re:Zero franchise but in the second season, she’s been forced to take a backseat due to a battle with some powerful new threats! However, a new girl—who also happens to be a witch—has made her grand appearance and fans are now conflicted. Known as Echidna the Witch of Greed, this grey-haired maiden has won over fans and has begun a major battle regarding who is the real waifu of Re:Zero. Let’s discuss some reasons why Echidna, despite such little air time, has nearly usurped Rem and her title of best waifu in Re:Zero!

Cute and Tough All in One Package

The first thing that we immediately noticed about the Witch of Greed is her cuteness. A few moments later, we also noticed she isn’t a girl to be trifled with. If this sounds familiar that’s because a certain blue-haired maid is very much a mirror to our Witch of Gree. Even if she’s technically “not alive” anymore, Echidna is a powerful spell caster that is capable of creating spaces from empty voids and possibly invading other worlds as she showed when she appeared in Subaru’s trial.

Has Some Adorable Features

Even if Echidna is a witch—which we’ve learned makes her a powerhouse of magic—Echidna is truly quite adorable. Not only is her hair long and silver—very similar to Emilia—she has a mischievous smile that just works with her overall look. Plus, as Subaru noted in episode 5 of the second season, Echidna looks quite cute in a school uniform. Hold the nosebleeds back readers!

Haunting and Enchanting

One element that most of the ladies of Re:Zero share is they are enchanting. Maybe it’s their features or their looks but in the case of Echidna its…well everything. When she discusses the world of Re:Zero with Subaru, she goes through a bevy of emotions that range from pouting when he wanted to leave and intrigued when Subaru showed her no fear. Echidna then went super close to Subaru—lucky guy in our minds—and warned him that most tend to fear her abilities. We can’t quite place our finger on it but there’s just something about the Witch of Greed that makes us want to hug her and show her how otaku show their admiration for a waifu.

Rem is in a Coma

Alright, here’s one reason that might be why people are loving Echidna over Rem…Rem is currently in a coma! From the first episode of the second season of Re:Zero, Rem has been out of the picture, besides a few scenes here and there, due to her battle with two powerful threats. Rem now being out of the picture means other girls have their time to shine and what better time for a certain witch to make an entrance and steal the hearts of those who loved Rem.

Final Thoughts

Our hearts still love Rem and all things about the cute half-demon maid but we won’t lie…Echidna has begun to change our minds slightly. Echidna has only been in two episodes of Re:Zero at the time of writing and we can’t say we love her as much as Rem but we can understand her appeal. Ultimately, the debate will continue for some time who is the best girl of Re:Zero but we will ask you now this one tough question. Who is better, Rem or Echidna? Comment your answers down below to let us know who you side with and why! For even more waifu debates and articles be sure to keep stuck to our otaku powered hive here at Honey’s Anime!

[en]What You Need to Know: [/en][es]Lo que necesitas saber: [/es]

  • "Yu Yu Hakusho" is an anime based on the manga of the same name by Yoshihiro Togashi back in the 90s. When the series begins streaming on Netflix Japan on Tuesday, September 1st, two new episodes titled "TWO SHOTS" and "Noruka Soruka", which were produced as a 25th anniversary project, will be released as well!
  • "TWO SHOTS" depicts an encounter between Kurama and Hibiki, and in "Noruka Soruka", Yusuke, Kuwabara, Kurama, and Hibiki gather to suppress a spiritual coup d'etat.
  • Newly created as a non-animated episode of the original manga, it is included in the Anniversary Blu-ray Box Set. Although it was released on some paid streaming sites already, they will be on Netflix for the first time!
  • The original manga was serialized in "Weekly Shonen Jump" (Shueisha) from 1990 to 1994 and a TV anime was broadcast from 1992 to 1995 which went on to become a huge hit.
  • "Yu Yu Hakusho" is one of the representative works of the "Golden Age of Jump" and is also known as a seminal work by Yoshihiro Togashi, who has created masterpieces like "HUNTER x HUNTER" and "Level E".
  • We usually get things a bit later in the West than Japan so we may see this later this year on Netflix globally. Hulu currently has "Yu Yu Hakusho" available for streaming but the two new episodes are not included. Look forward to that! (Or you can watch it on Netflix Japan with a VPN)

Kandagawa Jet Girls - PlayStation 4 Review

Jet ski racing has never been sexier!
  • System: PlayStation 4, PC (Steam)
  • Publisher: Marvelous USA, Inc., XSEED Games
  • Developer: Honey ∞ Parade Games, SHADE, Inc.
  • Release Date: Aug 25, 2020
Kandagawa Jet Girls - Launch Trailer [PLAYSTATION 4 | WINDOWS PC]

Who it Caters to

Kandagawa Jet Girls is a multiplatform project from the creators of Senran Kagura. While the anime premiered back in Fall 2019, the game's western release took its time, but it's finally available for all PS4 and PC owners. In this story, several cute girls compete in jet ski races to see who's the fastest, but the rules are a little bit different: every team consists of 2 girls, a jetter (the pilot) and a shooter, and they won't hesitate before shooting other gals if that's what it takes to win a race. If you enjoyed the anime or you just happen to like beautiful anime girls in summery clothes, how about giving this title a try?

What to Expect

In the anime, girls would frequently tear off each other's clothes, show their underwear, or stuff like that; in the uncensored version, you could even see them blatantly—and proudly—show their breasts. This is a T-rated game, though, which means no sexual innuendo and, of course, no naked waifus for you. You can definitely dress them sexy nonetheless! Simply put, Kandagawa Jet Girls is a racing game. Full of cute anime ladies in skimpy clothes, but still a racing game. Just look at those curves!!
[ad_top2 class="mt40 mb40"]

Visuals

This game definitely conveys the colorful, lively feeling of the franchise, with clean menus and admirable graphics for an anime game. Some portions of the story are told through small VN-like scenes, using animated 3D models instead of still images. As for the races, everything looks like it should, and although we'd have loved to see more circuits, it's nice that you can race at dusk or night, too. There's even a rainy course! Sadly, loading times are a problem when you browse the menu and go from one mode to the other, but as we just mentioned, at least they look really good, featuring simple yet appealing animations and many cool images of the girls.

Sound, Music

After playing Kandagawa Jet Girls, you won't be able to keep the main song out of your head, we have no doubt about that. During the prologue and epilogue of a race, the noisy synthesizers give way to a sweet melody that accompanies the dialogues. The more you play, the more songs you can unlock to play in the Clubroom. There are dozens of options available! Back to the dialogues, we love that all lines are fully voiced, something that's always a plus in our books when it comes to visual novels. Not only that, but the girls talk to each other during the races too! This is just a gimmick, but it helps a little with immersion. In fact, other games would be happy with just these sound effects, but we also have an English translation on screen. Who can complain about a little more insight while we race?

Gameplay

The main campaign of Kandagawa Jet Girls is divided into arcs, one for every team. You start playing with Rin and Misa, learning about the main character's passion for jet ski races but also experiencing how the titular Kandagawa Jet Girls team came to be. After winning a few races, you can try other arcs, playing as MKHU's Yuzu and Manatsu or Hell's Kitchen's Dina and Ziyu. In every race, your main objective is to finish in the first position, otherwise, you won't be able to advance to the next race. If you want to unlock a special item to customize your favorite character, however, you must complete 3 objectives, which involve using your weapons (or not using them at all), reaching a specific speed, or performing a set number of trick jumps.
Although the controls are not hard to master, we recommend you finish the tutorial before trying your first race. That's because you need to understand how to shoot your rivals, how to perform trick jumps that temporarily boost your stats, how to take advantage of drift-boosting, etc. To be honest with you, that's the only difficult part about Kandagawa Jet Girls; once you get enough points to buy new parts and customize your jet, it will be harder to lose than it is to win... and most races are super easy anyways, even without any upgrades. You can earn points to buy stuff by playing these story arcs, but it would be easier to go for the minigames listed as Extracurriculars in the Clubroom. If you ask us, Jet Machine Cleaning (something like a rhythm game that tests your reflexes) is both the easiest and the most fun, but there are other 3 options. Once you have enough money, head to the Clubroom's Shop to customize all characters and jet machines available!
If you get tired of the Story Mode, you can go to the Free Mode for a customized experience, where you can try a Time Attack race or just top other people's rankings. If you go for a Free Race, you can change the AI difficulty, lap count, and course; most importantly, this is the only place where you can race using 2 girls from different teams! Not only that, but you can race against 3 other teams of named characters—in the Story Mode, you only race against two named characters (a team) and several random girls. For those looking for a real challenge, there's also the Online Mode, where you can race against other players in ranked or casual matches.
[ad_middle class="mt40 mb40"]

Honey's Gameplay Consensus:

For what it's worth, Kandagawa Jet Girls plays like old jet ski games like Wave Rally or Splashdown, and it's a much better option than Aqua Moto Racing Utopia (also available for the PS4) if you only care about anime waifus and not so much about jet skiing. As of now, there are 7 teams from Kandagawa Jet Girls and another one from Senran Kagura—the Shinovi team, composed of twin sisters Ryona and Ryobi. In the near future, they will include more teams from the SK series, so look forward to it if you're a fan of the saga!

Honey's Pros:

  • If you like Kandagawa Jet Girls, Senran Kagura, or both, you'll definitely enjoy spending time with these girls.
  • You can customize your waifus, which seems to be the ultimate objective of this game.

Honey's Cons:

  • More censorship than its anime counterpart, so you won't see that much skin...
  • Too easy to be considered a real racing game.
  • No offline versus mode!

Honey's Final Verdict:

We don't expect you to buy this game just for the sake of high-speed water sports, so the lack of difficulty shouldn't be a problem for those who miss spending time with these sexy ladies. If you're a fan of Kandagawa Jet Girls, then you know what this is about! If you were looking for a realistic take on jet skiing or a rather complex anime game, keep looking! This is a pretty straight forward game about winning jet ski races to dress your virtual darling.

Tensei shitara Slime Datta Ken The Ways of the Monster Nation (That Time I Got Reincarnated as a SLIME The Ways of the Monster Nation) Introduction (No Spoilers)

Who would have thought a nation of monsters founded by a slime would go on to become one of the greatest kingdoms in the lands. The new Demon Lord Rimuru rules over the Kingdom of Tempest, a kingdom that rivals all others in technology, culture, and economic might. The aforementioned diverse culture makes it a traveler's paradise. Framea, a bunny girl with a love for adventure and travel undertakes the task of writing and cataloging the new kingdom for a guidebook commissioned by none other than the ruler of Tempest the Great Demon Lord Remuru Tempest.

Discussion Time

The world of That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime rightly so tends to revolve around the titular character but the world is so much bigger than Rimuru and his close band of subjects. The adventurers we’ve come across now and then Elen, Kavel, and Gido must lead interesting lives especially since they are friends of Rimuru the same goes for a lot of the other citizens of the burgeoning metropolis of Tempest. We also know until the creation of Tempest an actual city and organized government of monsters and by monsters was unheard of. So, the curiosity of the world must be focused on this new nation especially by monsters many of whom never imagined that they could even aspire to become more than third-class unnamed citizens of their world. The arrival of Framea and her over-amped curiosity made her the perfect recruit to create Rimuru’s planned guide book. The bunny girl, as if by some unseen force (*cough* Rimuru) meets all the most important craftsmen in the kingdom and is even tasked to escort some “nobles” through the forest and defend them from some rouge monsters. She is then personally asked by Rimuru to accompany Elen, Kavel, and Gido as they explore the brand-new dungeon under the city and review it before its unveiling as an attraction to the public.

Why You Should Read That Time I Got Reincarnated as a SLIME The Ways of the Monster Nation
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="NEOBK-2076775" text="" url="" ]

1. You Need More SLIME time

The story may be focusing on Framea the travel writing bunny girl and the people of Tempest but you can’t have a story about in the world of the SLIME without Rimuru showing up. You see his little slime formed hands in this story from the beginning as he manipulates who Framea runs into and talks with as she tours the city. We even get to see him step out from behind the curtain, so-to-speak about halfway through the story. You even get a few glimpses of his odd sense of humor in the traps he designed in the dungeon that remind you more of a Japanese game show than a life-threatening trial. You’ll be happy after reading this story to see Rimuru the ruler and not Rimuru the great wizard, demon lord, teacher, or adventurer.

2. Bunny Girl

We’ve seen all sorts of bunny girls in anime, some young actresses just trying to be noticed, some members of a proud warrior race, and some completely overpowered but not too bright. A bunny girl we haven’t seen until now is one that is an amazing writer and has an overpowered analytics skill called “Dilettante”. You don’t have to worry about her character being abrasive or arrogant with a skill that judges things either. She is more the happy go lucky type that enjoys new things. Did we mention she’s cute to boot? She is, as with most bunny girls, a mixture of cute and sexy. We even get to see her in a bikini for one frame reminding us of the battling blue-haired bunny girl Shea from Arifrueta.

Why You Should Skip That Time I Got Reincarnated as a SLIME The Ways of the Monster Nation

1. You Want Big Drama

The world of SLIME has had some real harrowing moments, from the invasion of the Orc’s, to the redemption of Shizue Izawa the events of volume 1 the follow the adventures of Framea don’t nessarly have any dire moments. The volume is an introduction to Framea and a reintroduction to many of the characters like Diablo and Gobta, the noted exception is Benimaru-sama who even got an apology from the author at the end for not slipping him in the story earlier. We think that if this was an anime it might be accused of being filler, that is if it were to stand on its own, we know multiple volumes are coming out in this side story and since we are dealing with a fantasy world filled with dungeons things can go south fast and take that anxiety level back up to eleven.

Final Thoughts

We really enjoyed this manga. It was nice to get a peek in on a lot of the characters we’ve gotten to know over the years. The chance to really get to know Elen and her party is especially nice. We haven’t seen them much in the anime and assume they are a little bumbling but are in fact “B” rank adventures, so they’ve got some skill. The introduction of a new character that lets us “discover things” through her eyes is also a very good convention for this kind of story. The best part is that she isn’t going to just disappear after one episode but the entire side story is based around her so she isn’t just going to hop off never to be heard from again. We really look forward to seeing what kind of dungeon the Demon Lord Rimuru has constructed and how he plans to exploit it for economic gain.

P.A. Works’ original racing anime Appare-Ranman! has awoken from its long coronavirus-induced hibernation and we can’t wait to see what more it has to offer! It’s set in an alternate universe version of the 1890s where automobile technology is flourishing, and stranded Japanese inventor Appare and his samurai chaperone Kosame decide to enter the Trans America Wild Race in California to fund their trip back home. While we wait eagerly for new episodes to arrive, let’s check out six anime (and one manga) that remind us of Appare-Ranman! We’ve chosen shows that embody the wacky, adventurous spirit of this anime, whether or not they actually involve racing. Let’s get started!

Similar Anime to Appare-Ranman!

1. Koutetsujou no Kabaneri (Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress)

[es][information_general item1 = "Episodios" content1="___content1___" item2="Emisión" content2="___content2___" post_id=""][/es]

This anime is often called a rip-off of Attack on Titan (which, considering that it shares the same studio, director, producer, and overall storyline... is actually a pretty apt comparison), but Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress definitely has some strengths of its own. It’s an action horror piece set in a steampunk version of the Meiji era, where humans have to use armored trains and steam-powered weapons to defend themselves against what are essentially zombies with steel-reinforced hearts. If your favorite parts of Appare-Ranman! are the creative character/costume designs and the focus on old-timey tech, you’ll love this overlooked Wit Studio thrill ride.

2. Dr. Stone

When a mysterious light suddenly turns all of humanity to stone, it takes over 3000 years for teen genius Senku to emerge from his petrified prison and discover that the world has regressed back to the Stone Age. Along with some old friends and new allies, he vows to rebuild human society from the ground up using the power of science! It almost goes without saying that Senku and Appare are basically the same person—they’re socially awkward but passionate inventors who work towards their goals one step at a time, enlisting specialists and acting tsundere toward anyone they happen to help along the way. Plus, they definitely go to the same hair salon. If Appare is your favorite character, check this one out!

It would be horribly gauche of us to write about a racing anime without mentioning Initial D, the king of all racing anime past, present, and future. Though best known for its thumping Eurobeat soundtrack and hilarious memes, this show is filled with heart-pounding street race scenes that portray cars whipping around tight mountain corners and drifting within an inch of the drivers’ lives. Appare’s “anything goes” driving technique (often ignoring the easy path in favor of faster, but riskier routes) reminds us a lot of the daredevil moves Takumi and his opponents pull off in this classic. Now we want a Eurobeat version of the Appare-Ranman! opening...

Any Anime Like Appare-Ranman!?

4. Baccano!

[es][information_general item1 = "Episodios" content1="___content1___" item2="Emisión" content2="___content2___" post_id=""][/es]

Mafia wars, immortality elixirs, bumbling thieves, serial killers... these elements initially seem unrelated, but episode by episode they begin to fit together into a much bigger story that connects together a diverse group of people across distance and time. Baccano is fundamentally pretty different from Appare-Ranman!, since it’s a mystery/crime thriller primarily set in the 1930s, but its ensemble cast and generally jovial vibe make it a perfect match for fans who love the interplay between the Trans America Wild Race’s colorful cadre of racers. And if you’re looking for another absolute bop of an OP to listen to along with “I got it!”, Baccano has you covered with the jazzy instrumental “Guns and Roses”.

5. Redline

Redline!!! What’s the plot? Who knows! What are the stakes? Who cares! This is Madhouse’s most ambitious project ever, clocking in at seven years of development time and over 100,000 frames of animation! It’s got blow-your-face-off racing scenes with colors and movements that fly in the face of reality itself, and music so intense that it could bring a patient in cardiac arrest back to life faster than our main character’s car zips along the futuristic track. If your blood pressure needs a boost after you’ve caught up with Appare-Ranman!, switch on Redline for even more high-octane action.

This French/Japanese co-production might be familiar to those of you who watched a lot of Jetix when you were younger – in fact, you may not have realized that it’s an anime until right now (we certainly didn’t)! It’s a sci-fi action-adventure show that takes the basic concept of pod racing from Star Wars Episode 1 and turns it into a full-blown galactic grand prix with a single unconditional wish as the grand prize. Spunky young mechanic Eva (using the alias “Molly”) escapes from her boarding school and joins Earth’s team as its main pilot so she can reconnect with her father, the enigmatic manager of the operation. Both Oban Star-Racers and Appare-Ranman! have similar larger-than-life atmospheres with underlying mysteries going on behind the scenes of each great race, and Molly probably frequents that same anime protagonist hair salon as well. Sit down for a nostalgia re-watch, or give it a spin for the very first time!

Honorable Mention. JoJo no Kimyou na Bouken Part 7: Steel Ball Run (JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure Part 7: Steel Ball Run)

Okay, so this JoJo part hasn’t been adapted into an anime yet and won’t get its turn for at least another few years, but it’s such a clear inspiration for Appare-Ranman! that we can’t in good conscience leave it out of the conversation. In the year 1890, paraplegic former jockey Johnny Joestar and mysterious Italian wanderer Gyro Zeppeli enter the Steel Ball Run cross-country horse race, but little do they know that the event is being held for a much more sinister reason and that they’ll have to use their Stands and newfound comradery to get to the other end of America alive. Appare-Ranman! seems to have taken this same basic concept and adapted it into a very different final product (unless the latter half of the series suddenly decides to have superpowers and a boatload of gay subtext), so take a look at this manga if you want to see another author’s rendition of a late 19th-century race across the United States!

Final Thoughts

Also check out IGPX: Immortal Grand Prix, Future GPX Cyber Formula, and even the old Hanna-Barbera cartoon Wacky Races if you still need more Appare-Ranman-style entertainment in your life. But are there any shows that we missed? What are you looking forward to seeing from this anime? Let us know in the comments, and thanks so much for reading!

Deca-Dence Mid-Season Impressions: The Most Exciting Surprise of the Summer?

$
0
0
[ad_top1 class="mb40"]

In a season dominated by sequels to popular shows—and a bit crowded thanks to delayed Spring 2020 leftovers finally resuming—it’s a bit easy for a series to get lost in the shuffle, but Deca-Dence has been one you shouldn’t sleep on, especially as an anime original. Today we’ll be diving into what has made Deca-Dence a great watch so far overall along with some of our favorite moments! Spoilers abound so proceed with caution, let’s get started!

Terrific, Twisty World-Building

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="imdb" url="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt12443322/mediaviewer/rm3264916737" ]

Although the idea of the world actually being a game has been done countless times before, the way it’s handled in Deca-Dence is quite novel and made for a captivating hook with the twist that episode 2 dropped on us. We’d say that the series has continued being strong about balancing how more details of the world are revealed over time as well, keeping up a sense of mystery in a way that doesn’t feel forced. We’ll just say that we’re interested in how the Gadoll fit into everything with the underwater breeding and training facility shown in the latest episode, and Pipe too, of course! Needless to say, the titular mobile fortress is also rad and complete with a somewhat Macross-esque transformation you gotta love!

Awesome Visual Design

Going along with the main twist, the bizarre world of cyborgs outside of Deca-Dence is oozing with creativity in its character designs that look like a mix of a Genndy Tartakovsky-ish “Western” cartoon style and anime, somewhat reminiscent of a lot of studio Trigger’s work and some of the more out-there episodes of Space Dandy. In any case, it’s another surprising part of Deca-Dence that certainly caught us off guard and has continued to add a lot to the series, especially given that the story is still largely serious with these goofy chibi characters. Even with the more realistic locations and characters of the fortress Deca-Dence itself, there’s a bevy of creativity and fun expressions to be found, particularly with Natsume’s hilarious faces. The combat outfits of the Gears are also certainly unique with their big goggles, round zone flight capsules, and needle weapons. We’ve been digging a lot of the Gadoll monster designs too, particularly the powerful, rolling gadoll that had the Dunkleosteus-like jaws

Deca-Dence Story Highlights

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="imdb" url="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt12443322/mediaviewer/rm3054939137" ]

To start this off we have to talk about the incredible training montage scenes in episode 3 with Natsume going from flailing around as Kaburagi drags her through the air on a kite, then through the water, etc and getting thrown into fights with no idea what she’s doing to becoming more skilled and confident and slaying a Gadoll solo like a badass only to be hit in the head by a rock after its zone disappears. Good, classic stuff. Episodes 4 and 5 brought us a companion set of awesome scenes for Natsume and Kaburagi as well with Natsume asserting to him why she’s fighting after a flashback to her childhood where her father explains that humans used to live outside of Deca-Dence and then Kaburagi’s dramatic "the world needs bugs" line when confronted by Hugin. And then he gets zapped, what a cliffhanger of an episode ending that was! Segueing nicely into that is the arc following the “rehabilitation” prison Kaburagi gets sent to, particularly the awesome “Death Dive” fight he has with Donatello. Deca-Dence had already wowed us with its dynamic action sequences while fighting the Gadoll but this fight in the cyborg’s true forms was equally gripping and the outcome with them both choosing not to use their special abilities to their advantage being extra cool, albeit a bit surprising from Donatello.

Final Thoughts

Altogether, Deca-Dence has so far been a solidly enjoyable and overall well-constructed show that has continuously surprised and delighted us through this unusual season. While we suppose there’s still time to fumble, if its brilliant pace, characterization, and world-building keeps up, Deca-Dence has the makings of a modern action classic and is particularly impressive for a young studio like NUT. Nice opening and ending themes too! What do you think of Deca-Dence so far? An underrated gem? Please let us know your own thoughts in the comments section below and be sure to stick around Honey’s for more of all things awesome, anime and otherwise! Until next time, we’re decking out!

Muhyo to Rouji no Mahouritsu Soudan Jimusho (hereafter Muhyo to Roji) is a lighthearted show about the adventures of Tooru Muhyou and Jirou Kusano, his assistant. In Muhyo to Rouji, our heroes are always ready to detect crimes committed by spirits. In the story we meet many yokai with different motives and illustrative creativity behind them. The relationship between the two main characters is that of a mentor-apprentice role, but their personality differences lead to a lot of laughs. Hanae Ashiya begins his high school career in a very unusual fashion. He has a growing attachment from a spirit that is physically and mentally debilitating. In and out of the nurse’s office and collapsing on campus, he is frustrated that nobody but he seems to be able to sense the fuzzball spirit that keeps growing in size. When Hanae comes across a flyer advertising exorcism, he decides to seek it out. He is helped but then cannot pay the bill. To square this debt, Hanae goes to work for the Mononokean, Haruitsuki Abeno, who surprisingly turns out to be his classmate. Empathizing with many of the spirits they come across, Hanae joins Abeno as he performs the duties of the title Mononokean. The Mononokean is a youth with a glum demeanor that contrasts considerably with the carefree nature of Hanae. These two make for an odd-couple dynamic that invites comedy. Hanae knows nothing of spirits other than his awful week, so he has a lot to learn while they complete their requests. Hanae and Abeno have the same apprenticeship and mentor role that Muhyo and Rouji have, even if Hanae is there because he has to pay off his debt. Abeno and Muhyo are both masters of a craft, while Hanae and Rouji follow their counterparts and trust their direction and knowledge. Like the practice of magical law in Muhyo to Rouji, Abeno has skill and responsibility meant to guide spirits to the underworld. The creatures encountered in Fukigen na Mononokean have different motives, like those in Muhyo no Rouji. This anime is an enjoyable weekend watch that keeps things light and happy. The story is never too dense, and the next laugh is usually nearby.

Atop the school library at Saint Marguerite Academy, is a botanical garden and conservatory that is the haunt of one Victorique de Blois, rumored “golden fairy” of the library. Kazuya Kujou, a new Japanese student at Saint Marguerite, visits the school library to search for ghost stories when a glint of gold from above catches his attention. Spurred by curiosity, Kujou soon meets Victorique and a new adventure begins. With exceptional wit, Victorique reconstructs “fragments of chaos,” which present themselves as unsolvable mysteries by police and detectives. From theft to suspicion of the supernatural, Victorique and Kujou find themselves faced with bigger and bigger questions. Though Kujou is a fierce friend and protector of the frail Victorique, are their problem-solving skills enough to grapple with the inevitable? Like Muhyo to Roji, the impressive deductive abilities of Victorique, and her ability to outdo every puzzle that crosses their path makes for a great story that keeps surprising. Like Muhyo, Victorique has a small stature, a large brain, an even bigger ego, and boundless confidence. Kujo, like Roji, spends time cleaning up after and protecting his counterpart. The comedic dynamic of the main characters in both Gosick and Muhyo to Roji is one of the more similar themes. They both work strange cases that cross their paths. If this doesn’t make you want to try Gosick, it’s interesting to note that our heroine’s movement is restricted by parental control and she solves some mysteries from the conservatory, and then with only the facts relayed in conversation. If you like main characters whose personality traits are so different that they have an aspect of comedy, and you love being impressed by deductive skills, this is for you.

Expelled from his orphanage, Atsushi Nakajima is abandoned and starving on a riverbank. He decides that he must steal from others to get food and survive. At this moment, a man floats, legs up, down the river. Without much strength to spare, Atsushi jumps in and saves the man, Osamu Dazai… or rather, Atsushi l has interrupted the strange man’s latest suicide attempt. After a belly-full of food as a reward, it becomes clear that this man may be bizarre, but Atsushi has a few unusual things about himself. Atsushi comes to work with Dazai at the Armed Detective Agency. Something unusual about this anime is that it has a large cast of characters, all of whom are interesting. Named and made to look like their classic author inspirations, characters who are “gifted” have a power individual to them. For example, Margaret Mitchell has the power “Gone with the Wind,” and Fyodor Dostoevsky has a power named “Crime and Punishment.” This anime inspires a want to learn more Japanese literature and have fun knowing the basis of the main characters! Like Muhyo to Rouji, Bungou Stray Dogs is about a group of people who protect where they live from supernatural crimes. This anime also has shounen elements. More importantly, there is a character with whom the Muhyo fan should become acquainted, and his name is Ranpo. This character is the brains behind the Armed Detective Agency. Just as Muhyo always seems to know the answer, even when the going gets tough, Ranpo uses his Ultra-Deduction ability to close cases. Instead of napping and reading manga like Muhyo, Ranpo spends his leisure time lazing about with a large pile of candy and snacks. Every character in Bungou Stray Dogs is interesting, but Ranpo is someone the Muhyo fan will get enjoyment from watching throughout the series. With two other seasons, a movie, and plenty of plans in production stages, there is a lot to love about Bungou Stray Dogs.

Walking quietly from place to place with a cigarette ready to light, Ginko seeks those afflicted by the influence of mushi, obscure supernatural entities. Imperceivable by most, mushi wander predominately in nature but have severe effects on those with whom they come into contact. Often unknowing of their affliction, or not wanting help, Ginko treads softly in his efforts to assist those whose lives have been changed because of the mushi. Though Mushishi is less buoyant and more serious than Muhyo to Roji, both main characters do a job which ultimately helps those who are not able to help themselves. (This is really shining through in season 2 of Muhyo & Roji!) They solve cases of supernatural interference. Something else to enjoy about Mushi-shi are the creative illustrations of the mushi. If supernatural-themed anime are a thing for you, this anime is full of delicate depictions of spirits, whose impact on the world around them is obscure and mysterious.

While visiting his cousin at a hospital, Kurou Sakuragawa encounters Kotoko Iwanaga. At first, both seem unlike the rest of the world, but it becomes clear that neither of these individuals is entirely human. With the loss long ago of one leg and one eye, Kotoko is referred to as “The Goddess of Wisdom” by the supernatural world. She seeks to mediate and maintain order between the worlds of humans and spirits. Kurou is Kotoko’s sometimes begrudging boyfriend. With his own supernatural abilities that come from something other than humans, he assists in her efforts to mediate situations between the supernatural world and the world of humans. Kotoko has pride and insight reminiscent of Muhyo. Similarly, their efforts to maintain order over strange supernatural occurrences makes this an excellent choice for someone who enjoys Muhyo to Rouji. Kyokou Suiri was published as a Crunchyroll original anime in 2020 and like many current anime, some of the color decisions are strikingly beautiful. The coloration of Kotoko’s eyes is something to admire when watching Koykou Suiri. The published manga contains more story than season one could fit in. No word yet on a season 2, but if you have not yet enjoyed watching an anime whose manga you read, this could be a great opportunity to hop on board!

6. Natsume Yuujinchou (Natsume’s Book of Friends)

Last, but certainly not least, we have Natsume Yuujinchou. Takashi Natsume inherits a book of his grandmother’s which contains names of yokai. Natsume’s possession of these names causes him to be sought after by spirits looking to gain an amount of freedom by getting their name back. While most anime with supernatural themes tend to be about fights, Natsume Yuujinchou has a different path. Instead of fighting to keep these names, Natsume gives them back. What follows is a heartwarming adventure complete with many unusual characters that centers around the joy of learning about family who have passed on. .Natsume’s companion is a cat-camouflaged yokai who believes giving names back for free is a fool’s errand. Natsume Yuujinchou and Muhyo to Rouji are both fun anime to watch if you enjoy stories that involve creative depictions of spirits. Like Rouji, Natsume is an upbeat character that almost always keeps his levity. The relationship between Natsume and his jaded cat-companion is similar to Myhyo and Rouji also. Natsume Yuujinchou is a fun watch and a good option if you are already enjoying Muhyo to Rouji.

You Don’t Want to Miss 2020’s Hot (and Hilarious) Summer Ecchi Anime!

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="imdb" url="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt12464182/mediaviewer/rm80388609" ]

This lovely summer of 2020 has shown us that life as we know it has three constants: death, taxes, and ecchi. We have a few fun continuations like Shokugeki where we sort of know what to expect. Then we have four new ecchi anime this season that seem to follow similar formats we’ve seen before. How do these guys hold up against other ecchi with monster girls, unwanted harems, hentai sentai, and persistent tag-a-longs? Let’s take a look at these familiar concepts with a fun twist!

Uzaki-chan wa Asobitai! (Uzaki-chan Wants to Hang Out!)

Ecchi anime sure loves a would-be pure protagonist male that isn’t responsible for those sinful boobies pushed in his face! Few things are funnier (in fiction) than when a guy is desperately trying to resist his urges while shameless women mercilessly pursue or tease him. Shows like Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai! And Kyokou Suiri are not ecchi but have loner males with girls that seek to befriend them against their wishes. Uzaki-chan wa Asobitai is different in that it’s a little raunchier than these romance/dramas and a little less raunchy than titties-out ecchi harems where the guy is fighting off multiple women. Uzaki-chan does definitely have a big rack and it’s understandably the root of some of the humor and conflict, but they aren’t as in-your-face as in other anime of a similar nature. This makes the humor surrounding them more organic and relatable while relying on Uzaki’s merciless teasing and Shinichi’s reactions to being the main comedic focus. They get into some rather sexually-charged situations but its usually an accident and Uzaki handles them like an adult instead of a dramatic teen which is also a refreshing change.

Monster Musume no Oishasan (Monster Girl Doctor)

We’re no strangers to monster girls and immediately, Monster Musume no Oishasan bears some striking similarities to Monster Musume no Nichijou. Of course, our young, male protagonist finds himself taking care of multiple monster girls, who all seem to develop feelings for him rather quickly. We have the possessive first/main girl lamia and a noble centaur as well as a full cast of the same kind of monster girl cuties. Oishasan, however, has less of an accidental feel to it. Dr. Glenn meets these monster girls as a result of his profession and falling for medical professionals is a documented phenomenon. The monster girls aren’t nearly as blatantly naked and sexual as they tend to be in other monster anime, but there’s a lot of sexually-charged medical imagery and phrasing. This can be a plus and a minus for the show because it gives it a more mature, worldly feel but can turn off those who are squeamish about doctors.

Dokyuu Hentai HxEros (SUPER HXEROS)

When you think of sexy heroes saving the world, you probably think of anime like High School DxD where our main perv-protagonist is literally powered by erotic feelings. DxD’s Issei and HxEros’ Retto have a pretty immediate harem fighting by their side and it would see these two ecchi would be too similar. While they share some of the most intriguing similarities, they are also different enough with their own settings and character developments to make them unique. One development in SUPER HXEROS is that of Retto’s childhood friend, Hoshino. We’re led to believe an attack from a Kiseichuu (eros-absorbing parasite-alien) changed her from her happy, outgoing self to a standoffish, reserved girl. In actuality, it was the Kiseichuu’s comments about her unbelievable erotic potential that humiliated her into closing herself off from others due to shame. This plays out in a very somber manner in which Retto tries desperately to hold onto his friendship with the now-cold Hoshino and vows to protect others from seeing their loved ones turn into shells of their former selves. It’s still incredibly funny but at the root of it is a desire to protect others that makes you cheer for our naked heroes!

Peter Grill to Kenja no Jikan (Peter Grill and the Philosopher's Time)

Ah, the tried and true story of a hero trying to fend off some aggressive ladies’ intent on banging. Reluctant and virtuous MCs are fun for self-inserts and for those who just like comedy in general. While often these anime are either straight up hentai or ecchi where things never get too far, Peter Grill expertly toes that line. It has all the excitement, hilarity, and suspense of sexy girls trying to seduce an initially unwilling man but doesn’t focus on the act itself. We get more time to learn about everyone’s motives but it’s still hilarious enough to keep us from getting too caught up in the morality of it all. While we feel for the heroic and well-meaning Peter who wishes to marry the pure Luvelia who doesn’t even know what sex is, when we see the incredibly desirable, hot women all vying for Peter’s ‘superior seed’, it’s hard not to root for them!

While completely new settings and stories can be refreshing, it’s also great to see anime take a known trope or setting and execute it in a clever, different way that makes it distinct from those before it. There’s a certain seriousness and maturity that seems to permeate this season’s ecchi. There also seems to be more adult characters than teens for those of us older fans who prefer to watch ecchi anime with characters that aren’t under-age. Leave us a comment telling us which ecchi show has got your attention this summer!

You CAN Buy Love: A Look at Rental Family Services Through Rent-a-Girlfriend

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="imdb" url="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt11448214/mediaviewer/rm1315154177" ]

It’s not unheard of for anime to come up with incredibly ‘convenient’ plot points in order for two characters to get it on; be it supreme clumsiness or as a means to save the world. One thing that is not exaggerated, though, is the seemingly unrealistic premise of Kanojo, Okarishimasu (Rent-a-Girlfriend). Pretty much everyone is familiar with escorts, expensive professionals you can pay to entertain you and usually results in some sort of sexual favors. It’s usually to enjoy an extravagant night out. While there are all kinds of such similar services in Japan, the Rental Family Service is a bit different. Not just regulated to rentable family stand-ins, customers can request significant others, coworkers, and classmates. Let’s take a look at some key points of rental family service through the lens of this season’s Rent-a-Girlfriend!

Professional Fun and Games

On the surface, it all seems like meaningless fun between a bored guy and a girl who wants money. They use each other to get what they want and neither really cares about the other. Kazuya starts this way, at first idolizing his rental girlfriend Mizuhara and then hating her when learning she makes all her customers feel special (as is her job). He decides she must feel empty or just be a bad person for accepting money for living up to the expectations of others. After making a public scene, Mizuhara chastises him and says she loves her job and takes pride in how good she is, revealing she even bought a book on fish so that she’d be able to converse with Kazuya more on subsequent dates. Rental partners often ask for information or research the kind of role they are supposed to fill in, going far beyond just looking the part and being present. While the idea is to have a good experience, whatever it may be, it’s still very important to take each job seriously. Some actors will use specific mannerisms or adopt different speech patterns to better serve the customer’s specific desires. Their professionalism is seen in how incredibly natural it looks.

It Serves as a Bandaid, Not an Antidote

While it may seem counterproductive to a business, the goal of many companies is simply to aid people until they get to a position where they no longer need it. By covering an emotional wound like a grandmother’s sudden death, having a replacement grandma to bake you cookies and tell you stories can help soothe that pain. One day, that wound will heal under the bandaid and you won’t need it anymore. Sometimes people don’t want to explain why a child is missing, a parent can’t attend, or there’s no one to accompany them to a wedding. Simply filling a specific role in a time of need can help keep events and ceremonies focused on what’s happening instead of what’s missing. Kazuya’s emotions are all over the place and he often goes from a complete disregard for Mizuhara’s privacy and free time to apologizing for being pathetic for needing her services. While she’s adamant about her personal boundaries and doesn’t let herself get pushed around despite Kazuya’s begging, she is always quick to assure him he isn’t pathetic for having feelings. She believes strongly that people should be allowed to feel hurt and lonely and as she says, “… some goodbyes can only be healed by a ‘see you again’”. Even just acting out those desperate wishes with a stranger can be a cathartic way of letting go of what we can’t change.

Setting Boundaries Doesn’t Mean Everything is Fake

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="imdb" url="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt11448214/mediaviewer/rm1099214337" ]

One of the repeated gags in Rent-a-Girlfriend is how hot and cold Mizuhara can seem. Her dating persona is so sweet and cute, it’s jarring to see her kick Kazuya for attempting to hug her during a tender moment. It may seem a little harsh, but rules are in place for a reason. Unfortunately, it’s often people suffering some deep loneliness or loss that reach out for rental services that can’t be filled with just one or two meetings. Sometimes people get too attached or delusional and believe those workers should fill that role full-time because the pain for the customer is unbearable otherwise. Rules, such as women not meeting/entering a male customer’s house and nothing beyond hand-holding, help to keep things from escalating. Mizuhara doesn’t allow Kazuya to beg her into going along with everything he wants but she does cheer him when he talks himself down, on or off the clock. She even finds herself getting more involved than she’d like due to those Kazuya loves and not wanting to disappoint such nice people. A lot of actors really enjoy their work and meeting new people, just like Mizuhara. Being able to help others is great, and they make enough money to devote their time to being available whenever someone needs them, something most of us just can’t realistically do.

Final Thoughts

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="NEOGDS-410321" text="" url="" ]

Kanojo, Okarishimasu may be a comedy but it touches on some pretty profound and complicated topics like honesty, familial expectations, and personal relationships. Especially in cultures where appearance is everything, having a stand-in can be a serious life-saver. Loneliness comes to everyone even if they’re not good with people or don’t look super attractive. Sometimes it’s just nice to have someone to be there when you need them and never worry about reciprocating emotionally or physically if you’re unable to. Rent-a-Girlfriend explores the topic of purchased relationship dynamics in a world where you can’t always know what the people you’re involved with are really like under their mask. Would you ever rent a relative or girlfriend? Let us know in the comments!
