Kyon is bored with his current life, or more specifically, he lacks any belief in the supernatural, thinking things will only continue on at the same tedious pace. Someone with a similar feeling is Haruhi Suzumiya, a girl in Kyon’s class, but she on the other hand has taken it upon herself to make things interesting, to seek out the supernatural for herself. After commenting on how bored she is by the clubs at school, Kyon suggests to Haruhi that she should make her own club, and so the SOS Brigade is born, a club dedicated to investigating the supernatural. And of course Kyon is bullied into joining. Although the stories go their very separate ways, the starting circumstances and themes behind both Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu and Hyouka are very similar. That is, Haruhi also has a good share of mysteries, or rather unusual events, that Kyon has to figure out, as well as having the everyday slice-of-life periods where silly goings on occur. Kyon and Oreki are dangerously similar as characters with both lacking any motivation to do so much as lift a finger, but at the end of the day both are forced to do all the hard work. Both series also share the romantic undertones throughout, though Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu explores them more, but still doesn’t have too much focus on the romance aspect. Haruhi will give you a similar feelings to Hyouka at the start but take you on quite a different adventure with much more focus on the supernatural, making many of the mysteries a little less believable and a lot more bizarre.

Cynical, Narcissistic, Hachiman Hikigaya is like a bitter old man in a teenager’s body. His opinions and ideas although not often wrong, never seem to be what people want to hear, or the kindest resolution to a problem. As a punishment for writing a mocking essay, his teacher forces him to join the Volunteer Service Club, dedicated to helping other students with their problems. An ironic and fitting punishment. Along with the cold heart of winter Yukino Yukinoshita, the two of them set to solving the often silly and tiresome problems of high school students. By far the biggest thing Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Comedy wa Machigatteiru and Hyouka have in common is their main character. Oreki and Hachiman may have different reasons, but they are both equally disinclined to get involved with other people, let alone offer their services. As you can imagine though, just like with Oreki, Hachiman is often quite agreeable from an audience perspective and watching him develop (and screw up) is very enjoyable. In addition to that, the mysteries, or in Yahari’s case student problems, in both shows are a little odd, but always somewhat grounded in reality. Compared to more supernatural shows, this makes them easier to follow, and gives you more opportunity to work them out for yourself which is a nice challenge. Like Hyouka, Yahari also has romance which isn’t fully addressed, although it focuses a lot more on this aspect later on. If you liked Hyouka but wanted a bit more conflict, we would recommend Yahari.

Revolving around the five students of Yamaboshi High School’s Cultural Research Club, Kokoro Connect puts the member’s friendships to the test in a series of bizarre, supernatural events. It all starts when they begin switching bodies with each other at random, which is awkward to say the least. As the incidents continue and other strange things begin to happen, secrets and feelings are put out in the open, for better or for worse. Although they have fairly different plotlines, Kokoro Connect and Hyouka both have a similar feel for a number of reasons. First is the art style, which is quite similar despite both being by different studios, and along with this both are excellent at very quickly creating an eerie and unsettling atmosphere. The character relationships also have a similar feel, with some silly slice-of-life moments, along with arguments, and the awkwardness that comes with hidden feelings. Another somewhat obvious but important point is the school club settings, which again has a big effect on the character relationships, environment, and daily occurrences in the story. Although not really a mystery show, Kokoro Connect shares a lot of other similarities with Hyouka, so if you were after the similar series but with a bit more drama, Kokoro Connect is a good choice.

A story of ghosts, spirits and gods, many of whom are insistent on inhabiting the bodies of young girls, Bakemonogatari is supernatural to the core and won’t let a minute pass without reminding you of it. The one charged with saving said damsels in distress is Koyomi Araragi, a high school student who has just got back to his normal life after surviving an unfortunate encounter with a vampire. After catching fellow student Hitagi Senjougahara as she fell through the school’s stairwell and realizing that she’s almost weightless, he insists on delving back into the world of apparitions to help her out. Although Bakemonogatari focuses heavily on the supernatural, both it and Hyouka feature a constant flow of mysterious cases that can only be solved by our quick thinking protagonist, often leaving everyone else in the dust. Their motivation is also similar, cute girls (and a lack of anything better to do). One of the things that separates these two from the bunch though is their use of language. The characters from both series are actually terrifyingly intelligent in the way that they speak and phrase things, as well as how they tell stories and explain events. It’s easy to find yourself hanging off their every word. The two shows are also big on using unusual imagery during the telling of their stories that breaks away from more standard animation and art styles, though Bakemonogatari tends to be a bit more abstract in this regard. Overall both shows are very clever about the way in which they tell their stories, as well as having some great mysteries, and funny scenes.

A Japanese student very far from home, Kazuya Kujou has been cast out by his classmates at St. Marguerite Academy due to his appearance and the saying that “the traveler who comes in the spring brings death with him”. But an eventful meeting leaves him with at least one long lasting companion, Victorique de Blois, the pipe smoking, book loving Golden Fairy of the library. Of course, Victorique also happens to be a genius detective, and together the two of them begin solving mysteries, from police cases to more personal vendettas. If you salivate at the idea of more mysteries, then this is the show for you. Gosick and Hyouka’s clearly defined link is their excellent mysteries and puzzles. Compared to Hyouka, Gosick tends to go for slightly more drawn out arcs, and chooses to focus less on slice-of-life events. Because of this Gosick has a more serious and dark feel to it, particularly later on in the series. Gosick also features romance, with it becoming more important later on in the series. Although the romance is focused on more than in Hyouka, we still have the amusing and awkward undertones continuing throughout a majority of the show. So if you’re hungry for more mystery, Gosick is one of the best around, with a good helping of comedy and romance.

Yuuta Togashi is just an ordinary high schooler, at least now he is. When he was at middle school though, he was the Dark Flame Master, a badass with a demon hand. Or rather, he thought he was. But that embarrassing past is all behind him now, or at least it was until Rikka Takanashi decided to show up. Despite being a high schooler, Rikka is still lost deep in her Chuunibyou syndrome, and she’s determined to bring the Dark Flame Master back! No mystery in this one, in fact, it’s pretty clear what’s going on. But despite the lack of mystery, with the same high school setting and amusing character dynamics, Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai and Hyouka have a very similar feel throughout. This is also partly due to them sharing the same production studio, KyoAni, and thus having a very similar art and animation. The two main characters are also very similar, with a male lead who is just trying to have a normal high school life, and a female lead who’s a tad (very) excitable and can’t leave him alone. As you can imagine with Chuunibyou having a stronger focus on romance, this makes them a funny combination. So for those of you that thought Hyouka could use a little more wackiness and a lot more romance, Chuunibyou is an excellent choice.

As a superhero, Kinnikuman is a terrible one until he comes across a man named Meat. Meat explains that he is the prince from an alien planet. Now, Kinnikuman has a mission: to compete in tournaments and save the day from evil Chiyojins to become the hero he has always wanted! While Kinnikuman may sound like any other shounen series, it has a special place in France. That is, away from France. While Kinnikuman did air in France, out of the 137 episodes, less than 50 were actually aired due to the presence of Brocken Jr. While he does have swastikas on his uniform, they have more Buddhist symbolism than Nazi. However, it’s Brocken Jr.’s Nazi uniform that made airing this anime a big no-no, thus, only a handful of episodes were actually shown in France.

Hetalia Axis Powers is a controversial anime that takes different countries and personifies them into whacky characters. These characters interact and take on important political decisions during the time of World War I and World War II. Who are our main characters? There’s Italy who is rather carefree but loves pasta, the strange Japan, and of course, the serious Germany. While this hilarious anime may seem like it’s all laughs, but underneath it is a hotbed of political humor sure to piss off many countries. With the concept of this anime so hot, South Korea was in an upheaval about this anime due to the tensions between South Korea and Japan. So much so that even when South Korea’s character was removed from the anime so that it could air in South Korea, many petitioned the station and they were forced to cancel the anime before its broadcast. Did we mention there were also death threats?

Kasugano Haruka and Sora have been orphaned when their parents were killed in a car accident. The twins have gone to their grandfather’s house to start over, haunted by memories from their past. Here, Haruka and Sora meet childhood friends Yorihime Nao and Amatsume Akira, as well as a new friend Migiwa Kazuha. Life seems peaceful, but below the surface emotions are boiling and secrets are untold. Yosuga no Sora was a hot topic when it aired in 2010. Despite being a daytime anime, Yosuga no Sora featured sex scenes that really should not be easily accessed by young children. However, it wasn’t the sex scenes alone that struck a nerve in viewers. It was the sexual relationship between twin brother and sister that really jarred viewers, causing controversy in Japan as well as internationally. While Japan is known for playing with the idea of incest in harem anime, no one was prepared to see it play out on screen in broad daylight! It was due to the incest and sex that Yosuga no Sora was brought to the attention of the Tokyo Government in hopes of banning it, but it managed to escape the ban.

Japan and the USA have been at war for three years now. Our main character is a boy named Gen who lives in Hiroshima city with relative peace as the city has not had to deal with wartime tragedy, except for scarcity in supplies. Gen and his family are coping with malnutrition due to the shortage in supplies, putting Gen’s pregnant mother in danger. Gen and his family are just trying to work to survive the wartime, but little do they know what is about to happen. Barefoot Gen is an anime movie based on the manga written by Nakazawa Keiji, a man who actually survived the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. It is one of the few anime that have actually tackled the atomic bomb subject and depicted it graphically. In Barefoot Gen, the real effects of the atomic bomb are shown as people’s eyes melt out of their sockets, skin and muscle fall over the bone, and people are literally burned. While the movie does depict the real suffering of victims of Hiroshima, it does not make Japan out to be a victim, as is common in most atomic bombing memorials in Japan. In fact, the original manga highlights the wartime atrocities committed by Japan while the anime briefly mentions Japan’s inadequacy in responding to the atomic bomb. The manga was briefly banned from a handful of school libraries in Japan for its one-sided portrayal, violence and the use of derogatory terms. The anime movie was restricted in schools in Japan and the U.S. for its graphic imagery.

This summer, Pico is working for his grandfather at his coffee shop, Cafe Bebe. Pico is a young boy who is rather feminine. Tamotsu is just a salaryman trying to relieve his everyday boredom. These two meet at Cafe Bebe sparking feelings that drive them together in a carnal relationship that does not consider conventional notions. However, is this love? As a yaoi anime, Boku no Pico has more than shocked the world by opening the door to shotacon yaoi, a subject that many are not very comfortable with. While Boku no Pico portrays consensual sex between a child and an adult, the subsequent episodes feature added children making this OVA series quite a controversial one. While Boku no Pico itself is not banned outright in other countries, due to the fact that Boku no Pico is animated child pornography, watching this series in certain countries can result in some trouble with the police for you!

Shinigami are capable of killing people with the use of a Death Note, as long as they have seen the face of their victim and know their name. Bored Shinigami, Ryuk, decides it might be interesting to watch what happens when a human is given a Death Note, so he drops one into the world of humans. Yagami Light, a high school prodigy, comes across the Death Note and tests it on a criminal. Upon seeing the power of the Death Note, Light decides to use it to rid the world of criminals. Unfortunately, the police realize that a serial killer is on the loose, killing criminals, but cannot fathom how or who the culprit could be, so they recruit the help of a rather odd, intelligent man known only as L. There is no list of controversial anime that can ignore Death Note. Children all around the world have taken it upon themselves to make Death Notes out of notebooks and write the names of people they wish died into them. In New Mexico, a school district attempted to ban the series from their schools, but children from all over the US have been reported and punished for owning Death Notes. In Russia, attempts are being made to ban the series for its influence on children. In China, Death Note is completely banned due to its perceived influence on children, although it is available in Hong Kong and Taiwan. Let us not forget the Manga Killer who received its name from the two Death Note related notes stating: “Watashi wa Kira desu” (a possible transliteration mistake) found near the mutilated remains of a corpse in Belgium in 2007.

While circuses appear to be full of life and laughter, there is a much darker side that is not privy to outsiders. Once Midori was a carefree elementary student until one day when she is forced to give up her livelihood to sell flowers to make ends meet after her mother falls ill. Midori’s world falls further when her mother dies and a stranger takes her to the circus. Midori continues to fall deeper into the depths of darkness, but is there a light at the end? Known more commonly as Shoujo Tsubaki, this anime movie has been banned in several countries for imagery that was controversial at the time it was released. There’s rape, enslavement, animal cruelty, and so much more that make it the ero-guro that it is known for. Shoujo Tsubaki has been cut so many times and the original version destroyed that you cannot find this anime movie in its entirety, although in 2006, a subbed version of this anime did resurface.

Aoki Daisuke is a new teacher who is having trouble with his first class. Kokonoe Rin, one of the third graders in Daisuke’s class, has decided to make Daisuke her lover. What feelings reside behind this decision? Is there a deeper, underlying reason? To make matters worse, Daisuke finds that he is a bit popular amongst Rin’s friends as well! If the summary didn’t allude you to the controversy behind this anime, then let us enlighten you. Kodomo no Jikan does not merely hint at but rather throws out the idea of a taboo relationship between an adult and a child who is 12 years old, although let’s not forget the taboo of a student-teacher relationship. There is over-sexualization of a 12-year-old girl, but Rin also appears to be calling the shots as she actively pursues a sexual relationship with her teacher! While lolicons are not exactly illegal, promoting pedophilia is and it is no surprise that Kodomo no Jikan was never aired outside Japan.

Sawa is an orphan who is an assassin under the control of a corrupt cop who is also her guardian. Sawa is ordered to kill men who have allegedly committed crimes. One day, a boy assassin, Oburi, comes to help Sawa. The two begin a relationship that heals the other. Oburi and Sawa begin to dream of a life together without murder. This cult classic cannot be forgotten when it comes down to controversial anime. Kite is known to be extremely graphic in violence, sex, and gore. If the bullets exploding inside the bodies of their victims weren’t enough, it’s the graphic rape scenes with Sawa that will really shock your system. In fact, the sexual scenes in Kite were so graphic that this cult classic is banned in several countries as being child pornography. How’s that for a controversial anime?

Satoshi is at the ripe age of 10 when he leaves home with the goal of becoming a Pokemon Master. He is given Pikachu as a starter Pokemon to help him in his travels. Along the way, Satoshi meets a Rock Pokemon Trainer named Takeshi who is a bit girl crazy, and a Water Pokemon Trainer named Kasumi who seems to have a crush on him. On this journey, they will butt heads with Team Rocket, who want nothing more than to steal their Pokemon. Pokemon may seem like any kids’ anime, but it is one of the most controversial children’s anime out there. Pokemon was completely banned in Saudi Arabia for its perceived Zionist ideals due to its depictions of imagery that promoted other religions. Jewish civil rights group believed Pokemon to promote Nazism due to the depictions of swatzikas on Pokemon trading cards and several Nazi-like scenes in the anime. Pokemon has even garnered the anger of the Christian community where some believe Pokemon to be demons and the entire franchise related to Satanism. Let’s not forget that Pokemon has been under blast for being being racist with Jynx’s design and promoting animal cruelty by forcing animal-like creatures into small spaces and depicting fights similar to cock fights. Not to mention that certain Pokemon episodes are considered controversial due to showing guns and threatening to shoot at kids, genderbending, and of course, who could forget that infamous episode with Porygon that gave children all over Japan seizures? Yes, there’s a hodge podge of controversy in this anime!

Yukikaze serves loyally as a member of the Biscotti Knights secret squad, a sect of the military in the Biscotti Republic. Though many of the other citizens of her country have canine ears and tails, Yukikaze is a rather foxy exception to that rule. Though she stands out a bit, she treats the other members of the squad like her own family. In realizing, Yukikaze’s parents are earth deities, giving her characteristics that set her aside from the pack, so to speak. In addition to being a kitsunemimi, she is also a bit strange in her occasional use of archaic language when she speaks. In battle, she is very fox-like - agile and fast, and extremely adaptable due in part to her proficiency with a variety of weapons.

Hoozuki and Bonbori are both foxily playful, cheerful, and hard to tell apart from one another, sometimes to their annoyance. The only one who seems to be able to differentiate between them is Hanakari, the person they have been assigned to work with to help bring peace between spirits and humans. They both enjoy teasing Hanakari but harbor a deep affinity for him. Two are better than one, and foxes are no exception. Hoozuki and Bonbori are kitsune twins who work for the Ministry of Spirit Affairs, but so do many other fox girls in the show. In fact, there are many kitsune side characters in the series, so many it was difficult to choose who to mention in this article! In any case,if you’re a fan of foxy gals, this show is one you won’t want to miss!

Ghost Sweeper Mikami takes place in a world where human development has destroyed the homes of spirits, driving them out and causing mayhem. The only hope and order for this world seem to come in the form of exorcists. The series centers around an Exorcist duo for hire, and the mysteries and supernatural creatures they encounter together. Tamamo the kitsune is one such creature. The two protagonist encounter a fox-girl named Tamamo. In her human form, the only indicator of Tamamo’s true power is her hair, which resembles the nine tails she possesses in her true form. In truth Tamamo is known as a Kyuubi no kitsune - or nine-tailed fox endowed with magical powers, featured in countless Japanese folktales.

A very long time ago, Hagoromo was a master of spirits. Now the kitsune spirit has been reduced to a being that must choose and possess human bodies - and if her host is defeated, she is defeated as well. Luckily, she can transfer between vessels at will, which allows her to conceal her true form as long as she is not truly bound to the human. In the series the demon possesses the body of a pretty young girl named Yamabuki Otome. The ancient yokai is extremely self-absorbed, narcissistic, believing not only that she is better than others but that she is entitled to respect, power, and control. Foxes can be devoted parents, and despite her evil nature, Hagoromo is not an exception in the way she behaves as a mother. Though not a kitsunemimi, Hagoromo is an unforgettable kitsune demon villain.

In a universe based on Chinese mythology, Dakki acts as the main villain. She is portrayed as an evil kitsune temptress using the emperor like a puppet while she calls the shots from behind the scenes, manipulating him to see her sinister goals of total control to fruition. She is as powerful as she is beautiful, and uses every means possible to her advantage. Foxes aren’t always benevolent in anime. Dakki is a cruel foe, and a bit sadistic, taking great pleasure in the suffering of others. She is not only a demon, but an ancient one, and time has made her a very competent and formidable foe. Interestingly, she can choose to take the bodies of female humans to occupy, rather than displaying her true, powerful kitsune form.

In this series, the protagonist is a demon tamer - or he would be, but he has failed thus far to tame his own demon or inukami and is considered a disappointment by his family. He encounters Yoko, and she seems like an easy target to tame, one he can use to reclaim his honor. However, he could not be more wrong. After all. Yoko isn’t an inukami - she’s a kitsune. Rather than being obedient like a dog, Yoko behaves like a fox. She is disobedient, and a trickster who revels in pranks. Yoko carries with her classic kitsune powers - the ability to manipulate fire magic, and the power to teleport. She can sometimes be see sporting a classic fox tail. She expresses an intense fear of canid creatures and an unusual obsession with chocolate cake.

To everyone who meets her, Chizuru Minamoto appears as an average teenager, albeit a particularly pretty one. She hides a secret that the protagonist of the series uncovers, as he seems to have a knack for attracting animal spirits. Chizuru is, in fact, a kitsune, who can shapeshift. In her true form, her hair turns from dark to blonde, and she sports fox ears and a tail. Chizuru is a powerful spirit, wielding the power of flame in addition to her ability to change form. She is extremely forward with her sexuality, particularly in regards to her advances on the series protagonist, and is jealous and possessive of other girls. Having regular girls chase after you is one thing, but have an ancient kitsune infatuated with you is a whole different breed of problems!

Sakura appears to be a young attractive female encountered by the series’ protagonist when in fact she is an ancient fox spirit with ulterior motives. Due to her partial human ancestry, instead of the typical nine tails, a kitsune is born with, she only has 8 ½, stunting her power. The only way she can reach her full potential is to consume enough power and grow stronger. While initially she tries to devour the energy of the protagonist to achieve this goal, she is later so inspired by her she joins the police force, even being partnered with her for a time. She uses her abilities to fly and control electricity in combination with deadly firearm accuracy to overcome her foes. Like Dog Days and Otome no Yokai zero, there are many other characters that are kemonomimi so if you’re a fan, this show may also be a good fit for you.

For as long as they can remember, those in the Mizuchi family have been hunted by demons. Toru and Noboru Takagami are two siblings who happen to be the youngest members of the cursed bloodline. However, in their mortal plight against demons, the two have one hope: their curious and resourceful family guardian Kuugen Tenko. Kuugen Tenko is a guardian fox deity who is so ancient that they are unable to remember their true gender, so like many kitsune they shift shape; specifically alternating between male and female forms. The foxy trickster was trapped by the family long ago, and once freed, took a liking to them and decided to act as a protector. This gender-bending kitsune uses magic and spells against demons to protect the two siblings.

Zakuro is a half-breed demon and the female protagonist of the series. She works on behalf of the Ministry of spirit affairs - an organization that seeks to help ease the growing conflict between humans and spirits. However, she generally dislikes humans, particularly the ones that embrace the western culture, or are disrespectful of spirits. Zakuro carries the spirit of the fox within her, which is likely responsible for her vulpine ears. Zakuro is an old school kitsune girl in more ways than one. Not only does she stay true to the form of fox spirits of Japanese legends - but she has a disdain for breach of tradition. Like many kitsune, Zakuro possesses magical abilities. Her fox-like agility also makes her proficient in combat, where she wields a dagger with great skill. Her strong-willed nature and charm make her a memorable kitsunemimi character to be sure, landing her a spot on this list.

Maiya Hisau is Emiya Kiritsugu’s right hand. She’s extremely cold, which makes her quite deadly and a very professional assistant. However, Maiya seems to have strong feelings for Emiya. Little is known of Maiya’s dark past and, probably due to her emotionless and detached personality, she may appear as dull or tasteless at first. That is only until we get to see Maiya in action, of course. Maiya is an incredibly cool and lethal assassin and fighter. She comes into the scene when you least expect to kick some ass and snipe people down. Maiya even proved to be badass enough to face the fearsome Kotomine Kirei, and even though she had no chance against him, we have to admit she put up a hell of a fight.

Caster, also known as Gilles de Rais and as Bluebeard, is one of the craziest (together with Berserker) and most intriguing servants of all. He’s disturbingly fascinated with murdering and torturing people. Just like his master, Ryuunosuke Uryuu, Caster derives pleasure in finding new ways of killing people. He’s also mad enough to start mass murders with the intention of building a tower of corpses (for no good reason), while completely disregarding the Holy War he and his master are in. However mad he is, Caster cannot be underestimated. He’s neither weak nor stupid. In fact, Caster proves to be a powerful and resourceful competitor in the Holy War, inspiring fear and awe in his rivals’ hearts. He may lack a bit of coolness, but Caster makes up for it with style (gruesome and dark, but style all the same) and skill. I mean, he stood against the most powerful servants and resisted Rider’s and Archer’s Noble Phantasms. That alone is enough to make Caster a true badass.

Tokiomi Tohsaka is the head of the wealthy and highly respected Tohsaka Family. He’s very likely the most powerful master in the Holy War and he also commands the most powerful servant, Archer. Tokiomi is one of the main antagonists in Fate/Zero, although he’s not actually an evil character. In fact, his main concern is that the Holy Grail does not fall in the wrong hands. Tokiomi is a fine gentleman with great manners who permanently looks cool and who’s always dressed for success. Tokiomi seems cold and he’s definitely merciless towards his enemies, although he’s a good guy deep down. Plus, Tokiomi is always the best in everything; he has the greatest magic powers, he has the best servant, etc. Tokiomi exudes confidence like a real badass because, let’s admit it, he’s got the highest chances of winning the Holy War. Sadly, it’s that kind of confidence that makes Tokiomi lower his guard just long enough for Kirei to betray him.

Lancer, also known as Diarmuid Ua Duibhne, is one cool-looking servant. He’s a pimp daddy who gets ladies’ attention everywhere he goes, including the battlefield. Everything about Lancer is cool and stylish. His moves are awesome, his hair is amazing, and the beauty mark under his eye is to die for. Lancer is everything we’d like to be. This servant is definitely a badass Fate/Zero character to the eye. However, on a deeper level Lancer has many flaws that decrease his badassery (otherwise he’d be at the top of this list). We’re referring mostly to his naivety and to his misplaced trust in his masters. Lancer can’t manage at any point to figure out what’s going on between his master, Kayneth, and his master’s fiancé. Lancer fails at pleasing Kayneth, who in turn starts bossing him around and humiliating him, until the very end in which Lancer is finally stripped of his precious honor and dignity as a knight.

Kayneth is a prodigious and renowned magus, master of Lancer and one of the main antagonists of the show. From his first appearance it is evident that Kayneth is an extremely powerful mage who can pose a real threat to the other contestants even without his servant. Of course, he’s not only powerful but he also looks like a million dollars. Kayneth has that badass Draco Malfoy-look (back when Draco Malfoy was cool) that comes together with a superiority complex that oozes confidence in loads. Clearly, this makes him a bit of a loathsome Fate/Zero character, but that is also why he’s such a badass. Kayneth can actually be an evil jerk and get away with it because he really is that powerful. Plus, his magical liquid metal sphere is freaking scary!

Kotomine Kirei is also one scary antagonist. He’s the master of Assassin and Tokiomi’s pupil. Kotomine appears at first as a boring and mysterious character with sleepy eyes. However, little by little we begin to learn more about the dark side of this seemingly emotionless man. Kotomine is in fact a sadist who loves toying with people and who feasts on others’ suffering. He’s actually deep and interesting enough to catch Archer’s attention. Kotomine is permanently cool and never loses his composure. He is a skilled and relentless mage killer, but more importantly, Kotomine’s deceitful enough to do whatever he wants and still get away with it (like backstabbing his own master). Kotomine Kirei is without a doubt an absolute badass thug.

Emiya Kiritsugu is the main Fate/Zero character and Saber’s master. For a protagonist though, Emiya is quite odd. He’s actually very dark and ruthless. Emiya prioritizes the Holy Grail above everything else, which means he can resort to deceitful and mischievous actions in order to eliminate his enemies. In fact, that is one of the aspects that make Emiya such a badass. It’s not so much his everlasting coolness, his professionalism, his wardrobe, his weapon skills, his awesome hair or the fact that he smokes (which is a bad habit but it looks cool to many people) as much as the fact that Emiya’s a lone wolf. That overconfident attitude of “I can do everything by myself” (of course, with a little help from his trusted Maiya) is what really makes Emiya a true badass Fate/Zero character. This man actually believes he can win the Holy War without Saber’s help. Amazing!

Here we have our beloved Saber, also known as Artoria Pendragon. She is Emiya’s servant and one of the most powerful and respected servants. Saber is a total badass from the very beginning, demanding respect from her master as well as from the rest of the masters and servants, not only for belonging to the Saber-class but mostly for showing a strong and formidable character. She’s the only woman among servants, yet she stands among the rest as a most fearsome rival. Saber shows the masters and servants that women are definitely not the weaker sex. Besides, as if her strong personality wasn’t badass enough, Saber wears the most badass-looking black suit ever. And don’t even get me started on how Saber rides that beast of a motorcycle. It’s freaking epic!

Rider is, together with Saber, one of the most popular and beloved characters in Fate/Zero. He’s also known as Iskandar (the Eastern name for Alexander the Great). Rider is a powerful warrior, a proud king and an ambitious conqueror. He has a fierce, cheerful and overconfident personality that makes him quite badass. Another thing that adds to Rider’s badass image is the fact that he is enormously huge. This massive guy gets to the scene flying in an ornamented chariot pulled by giant oxen and followed by roaring thunders. Considering all this, it’s probably safe to say that Rider is the most intimidating servant of all. Plus, the way in which he faced Archer on the bridge was really brave and heroic. There’s hardly anyone more badass than Rider, the King of Conquerors.

Archer, also known as Gilgamesh, is the most overpowered servant and the main antagonist of the show together with Kotomine Kirei. He is extremely cocky and vain, which would be more than enough for us to hate him, that is if he didn’t look so damn cool of course. Archer wears a shiny golden armor with thick gold earrings and a beautiful golden hair. Even when he’s not wearing his armor, Archer looks freaking awesome in his casual clothing. Archer is exceedingly cool in so many aspects. Even his Noble Phantasm, Babylon Gate, seems of divine origin. Every time he opens those golden portals in the air, Archer actually looks as the divinity he vainly claims to be. Archer can be a total ass but he has the looks, the charm, and the power to back it up and even get us to like him. Basically, Archer can get away with anything, and that makes him the ultimate badass.

Let’s start this list off with a classic and all-time must-watch from 2011, Fate/Zero. Three wars have already been fought in the past to determine who is worthy of the Holy Grail which can fulfill all your wishes. Now, a fourth and hopefully final battle is about to begin. In the middle of it, all stand Saber, a beautiful yet powerful warrior, and Kiritsugu Emiya who is known under the name “Magus Killer”. Who will win this war? Fate/Zero features age-old bloodlines and a fight that has been going on for ages. More importantly, though, Fate/Zero packs a lot of different elements into one amazing show: ancient wars, magic, fate, duty, bloody battles and a search for the Holy Grail. It is this complexity that truly reminded us of Harry Potter. No matter what you are looking for in a good show, chances are high that you can find it in Fate/Zero, so definitely give it a chance.

So what makes this anime similar to Harry Potter if it isn’t for the magic? First of all, we have a special group of people that need to be secluded in special schools in order to learn how to use their powers. But the main similarity that we see is the fact that Shinsekai Yori is a coming-of-age story. Just like in Harry Potter, the main cast grows up together and faces the troubles of their world side by side. If you are looking for a beautifully designed world with a powerful main cast that is trying to find its role in the world, then watch Shinsekai Yori.

Magic comes in many different forms and sometimes it can be used to transport demons back from where they came from. It’s time for Ao no Exorcist! Rin Okumura is your typical troublemaker: his grades are terrible, he cannot find a part time job and doesn’t have many friends. But his life takes another turn for the worse when he finds out he is, in fact, the son of Satan and has to become a master at exorcism if he wants to save himself from the powers of evil. Follow Rin on his journey to True Cross Academy as he is thrown into a world he didn’t even know existed. What really makes this show similar to Harry Potter, in our eyes, are its drama components. True, Ao no Exorcist has some pretty good jokes and an overall laid-back vibe, but there is more to the story than just that. Just like in Harry Potter, our hero has a dark backstory and has to question his own identity in order to beat his nemesis. Harry and Rin can both be hot-headed, but in the end, they have to fight for what they believe in to save their loved ones. Ao no Exorcist is a must-watch for all anime fans, so check it out if you haven’t already.

Firstly, we would like to say that Stringendo is arguably one of the best and longest running hentai out there. However, for this particular list, it falls to number ten. This anime doesn’t have too many threesomes in it, but we did happen to find one that stood out to us, mostly because of the situation it presents.
