Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie: Rebellion
If you read our “What is Yuri” article and watched the three example yuri anime I provided, this list is like a follow-up to that and further expands the list of yuri anime. I do recommend you read that article first before checking this list out.
Anyways, the list is tiered in terms of accessibility only. I will list down some light-hearted stuff first and then slowly bring up more complex shows until we reach the number one. And to spice things up, I will list my personal picks with shows you probably never heard of.
Strap on, folks! Be prepared for a bumpy ride!
Get it? Strap on as in strap on the… Okay, I’ll shut up.
10. Yuru Yuri (Happy Go Lily)
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" July 2011-September 2011 "]
Yuru Yuri is centered around the daily lives of Akaza Akari and her friends Toshinou Kyouko, Funami Yui, and Yoshikawa Chinatsu. The group of friends form the Amusement Club — a club with activities that consist of basically lazing around and doing random fun activities.
The characters in the show are (very) gay to some degree—Chinatsu is obsessively attracted to Yui, Ayano is so tsundere toward the main character Kyouko that she spouts puns… literally making a pun of herself… *ahem* And last but not least, there are the two tsundere love birds Oomuro Sakurako and Furutani Himawari.
Jokes are innocent at first but turn to rather, uh… Let’s just say that weird things happen after episode 5 or so. And, uh… Uh... Chinatsu was just confused at the time! She did not commit, in any shape or form, any lascivious acts!
Yuru Yuri stands proud as one of the most successful yuri-centric slice-of-life shows with with 3 seasons, an OVA and 2 specials under its belt. If you wanna start your wonderful journey to yuri, Yuru Yuri is your first stop.
9. Kanamemo
[Information episodes=" 13 " aired=" July 2009-September 2009 "]
After her grandmother passed away, Nakamachi Kana ends up living at a newspaper carrier company being run by a six-year-old girl. There, she meets an eccentric cast of characters and lives out her life with the others at the company they call home.
Kanamemo is a bit more naughty when it comes to yuri humor mainly because of Haruka (sexually) harassing Kana. Everything is done in a playful manner and Haruka’s antics often fail to “catch” Kana, so it’s not really too bad. Actually I never thought of Haruka being this token lolicon as a bad thing, I rather found it amusing seeing her going to great lengths to catch Kana with her pan—guard down and always failing. The show also has the couple Yume and Yuuki to provide sweet and cute moments, so there’s something for everyone. Oh and let’s not forget Mika who is totally gay for our heroine Kana. Damn you, Johnny!
8. Candy Boy
[Information episodes=" 7 " aired=" May 2008-May 2009 "]
Candy Boy revolves around the everyday life of very close twin sisters Sakurai Kanade and Sakurai Yukino living together in Tokyo to attend high school, and their rather clingy underclassman Kamiyama Sakuya who has a crush on one of the sisters. And… that’s it…
Each episode is very short, focusing on Sakuya’s antics and her getting in the way of the sisters’ lovey-dovey moments. These sisters are so gay with their teasing, one would wonder if they’re really gay and anxious for the moment where they finally kiss, if ever. Every episode will have you screaming “Kiss already!”, but it’s fine that way and it’s amusing to see these sisters BEING. SO. GAY. WITH. EACH. OTHER. Dammit, kiss already!!!
7. Maria-sama ga Miteru (Maria Watches Over Us)
[Information episodes=" 13 " aired=" January 2004-April 2004 "]
Maria-sama ga Miteru or Marimite follows the lives Fukuzawa Yumi and her relationship with Ogasawara Sachiko, as well as the members of the Lillian Girls' Academy student council. Marimite is strictly character driven with no main plot to speak of. Walking slowly is preferred here.
Marimite is very hard to follow if you’re not used to slow paced shows. I had trouble watching it at first, but after 3-4 episodes, I got used to the slow pace. You watch the show for its characters and the more you invest your time in them, the less annoying the slow pacing seems. I love a lot of characters here but if I were to pick two, I would have to choose Satou Sei and her interesting past, and Shimazu Yoshino and her surprising energy.
Widely considered a classic and icon of the yuri genre, Marimite is a must-watch for any yuri fan. Don’t be discouraged at the very slow pace. Watching it slowly is preferred here.
6. Sakura Trick
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" January 2014-March 2014 "]
A bonafide yuri anime, Sakura Trick tells the love story of Takayama Haruka and Sonoda Yuu and how they slowly build their newfound love for each other. Their love life isn’t really easy as they battle against a jealous big sister and hide their relationship from everyone… and Haruka is always finding ways to get a few smooches from Yuu. Oh, Yuu...
The story is very tame and if you found Maria-sama ga Miteru a bit much, this entry will lighten your mood. Your mileage may vary because this anime has lots of cringe-worthy and cheesy moments. If you love kissing, this anime has LOTS of it. I mean seriously, you’ll see kissing scenes in every episode.
5. Strawberry Panic
[Information episodes=" 26 " aired=" April 2007-September 2007 "]
Nagisa Aoi transfers to one of the three affiliated all-girl Catholic schools on Astraea Hill, St. Miator's Girls' Academy. There, she meets the beautiful Hanazono Shizuma, the Etoile (French for “star”) of the academy and unsurprisingly enough the Etoile is drawn to the new girl. With a huge cast of characters, there’s love, heart breaks, school politics, betrayal, and true love. Strawberry Panic is one, uh, panicky story.
This anime is like Marimite on crack. It offers the same all-girls school setting with the word “tame” thrown out the window. You will not see sex scenes or kissing scenes, but imagine a world with no guys where being gay is nothing to be ashamed of or to keep as a secret; this is what Stawberry Panic is about. Oh sure, there’s a story to tell here and it has lots of characters to love and hate, but your mileage may vary depending on what you want from the story or which girl or couple you’re going to root for.
I partially disliked some of the side stories because some drama scenes were a bit forced and the biggest offender is that my favorite girl got the short end of the stick. I hate you, Horse Girl. I hate you!
4. El Cazador de la Bruja (The Witch Hunter)
[Information episodes=" 26 " aired=" April 2007- September 2007 "]
Nadie the bounty hunter is hired to find and protect the amnesiac girl Ellis with a large bounty on her head, and who exhibits strange powers. Together, the two travel south to unravel the mysteries surrounding Ellis while being pursued by other bounty hunters and the mysterious man named L.A.
A story that’s not set in a school! Wow, look at that. It’s not categorized as yuri, but it’s slightly yuri-centric with some cute moments between Nadie and Ellis. I mean, come on, it’s a story about two girls travelling together.
Obviously, the best part is the Nadie and Ellis combo. The developing relationship between Nadie and Ellis grows at a steady, realistic pace with each episode. Ellis is distant towards her partner and Nadie was just in it for the job. After things starting to get serious, the two slowly begin to team up to deal with every situation, like fending off other bounty hunters or eating those delicious Amigo Tacos. There was never a dull moment.
3. Kannazuki no Miko (Destiny of the Shrine Maiden)
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" October 2004-December 2004 "]
The story revolves around two friends, Himemiya Chikane and Kurusegawa Himeko who are drawn into an ancient conflict as the Lunar and Solar Priestesses and they must defend the world against the 8 Orochi, one of which is a childhood friend of Himeko’s.
The story is rather dark, bringing up the troubled pasts of the characters, the consequences the two main characters must face and the love triangle between Chikane, Himeko, and Souma (an Orochi).
The love triangle here is not some rom-com filler, it’s an integral part of the story. Himeko gets saved by Souma, which frustrates Chikane since she couldn’t do anything. Bitter rivalry ensues doesn’t stop until one of them reaches their breaking point and does something unspeakable. Since the DVD covers, and the OP/ED themes point out a certain couple, it’s safe to say who eventually won. It’s not a spoiler if it’s obvious, right? Right?!
2. Yami to Boushi to Hon no Tabibito (Traveller Yami, Hat and Book)
[Information episodes=" 13 " aired=" October 2003-December 2003 "]
Azuma Hazuki is a tall, dark and brooding high school girl who has been deeply infatuated with her sister Hatsumi ever since they were little. Hazuki’s life turned upside down when Hatsumi vanished on her 16th birthday.
After Hatsumi’s disappearance, a talking bird appears and was also looking for Hatsumi. Hazuma convinced the bird to let her search for her sister. The story involves Hazuki travelling through different worlds looking for clues as to Hatsumi’s whereabouts.
Yami to Boushi to Hon no Tabibito, or Yamibou for short, is a story of finding Hazuki’s sister by travelling through worlds through books. Each book contains a unique universe and Hazuki encounters a huge cast of characters who are somehow connected to Hatsumi.
Yamibou is a very interesting specimen with strong yuri tones. Hazuki is so in love with her sister that she shies away when she sees Hatsumi naked, or when she’s showing off a bit of cleavage. On occasion, she can’t contain her lust, and so she ends up… playing with herself, or even eavesdropping on Hatsumi doing her business in the bathroom. It’s sorta creepy stuff, but it’s rather, uh, normal for someone who is so in love with someone I guess. Hazuki gets jealous every time a guy approaches Hatsumi, she “expels” her lust by doing the deed, and ignores every advance from other girls like Lilith.
At this point, you’ve already seen how yuri can be more than hugging, giggling and kissing after watching Strawberry Panic and Kannazuki no Miko. Yamibou pushes the theme a notch and explores what love can do to a girl.
1. Sono Hanabira ni Kuchizuke wo - Anata to Koibito Tsunagi
[Information episodes=" 1 " aired=" July 2010 "]
An OVA featuring the couple from the third visual novel of the same name, Sono Hanabira ni Kuchizuke wo - Anata to Koibito Tsunagi tells the short story of Sawaguchi Mai and Kawamura Reo and how they went from confession to love-making.
SonoHana is back and is still number one. Why? Well, that’s because it’s the only yuri anime on the list that is hentai. The story is a very simplistic romance with a dab of comedy and this won’t win any awards for characters and story, but SonoHana represents yuri in its simplest and purest form: girls falling in love, expressing their love with a kiss and further express it by, well, making love.
Simoun
Aoi Hana
And this concludes my list for top 10 yuri anime. We started looking at light hearted shows and eased our way to the more complicated and darker side of yuri. I excluded some popular ones, but I feel that some of these obscure or unpopular shows deserve more exposure. I personally think this is a very good list for anyone who may be a first-timer in terms of yuri anime but it also surely gives current fans something to try out.
