I don't think I'd watch a Godzilla anime... And it's going to be CG, right?
I don't think anyone expected this
I hope they do something completely different with it!
Wasn't there an American cartoon a while back? I wonder what this anime will be like...
I kind of expected this but... Why?

Kaji? Seriously? He so doesn't suit the character...
Shaft AGAIN? Come on, enough with Shaft...
At least if it's an OVA we don't have to worry about the quality
We also won't have to worry about them censoring out all the gore.

Similar Anime to Owari No Seraph / Similar Anime to Seraph of the End

1. Bleach

Bleach dvd
[sourceLink asin="B00YSBFOZS" asin_jp="" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 366 " aired=" October 2004 – March 2012 "]

Ichigo Kurosaki is just your ordinary high school boy who doesn't know supernatural anything could exist for real. One day, though, he finds himself face to face with a so-called Hollow – a spirit who devour human souls – and his life changes drastically. In a situation where he couldn't believe his eyes, and didn't know how to act, Rukia Kuchiki – a Soul Reaper – appears and tries to protect Ichigo and his family. When she gets seriously injured, Ichigo, to fight the Hollow and protect his family, accepts Rukia's proposal to take her powers and become a Soul Reaper! That's how Ichigo's life as an ordinary high school student ends for good. Owari No Seraph and Bleach are both supernatural action anime. As for the plot, in both these shows we find a hot-headed protagonist with a strong desire to protect friends and family. What's more, in both shows we can find a strong family theme. Ichigo lost his mother when he was very little, and so he grew up with a strong desire to protect his sisters and his father, even though his pride will never allow him to admit it. Yuu was an orphan and managed to build a family with his brothers and sisters from the orphanage, so he, same as Ichigo, grew up with a strong desire to protect and not to see his dearest ones get hurt ever again. Another similarity can be found about weaponry, as in both shows we find a weapon imbued with spirits that can be powered and grow stronger. Probably, the most important trait Bleach and Owari No Seraph share, though, is the way Ichigo as well as Yuu started their adventure on their own, just to find themselves surrounded by friends and people willing to help them. The same relationship that Guren and Yuu share, can be seen in the relationship Urahara share with Ichigo, for example. It's fair enough to say that if you liked Owari No Seraph, you will love Bleach and viceversa!

2. 07-Ghost

07-ghost dvd
[sourceLink asin="B0027P5JN4" asin_jp="" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 25 " aired=" April 2009 – September 2009 "]

Teito Klein is a student in the Barsburg Empire's Military Academy, which trains elite using a power called “Zaiphon”, that develops depending on the soldier's nature. Even though Teito is one of the most promising students of the academy, he is hated by his comrades since he was a slave and has no memories about his own past. Only one person, Mikage Celestine, tries to befriend him in spite everything and so they gradually become best friends. One day, Teito discovers a dark part of his past. After trying to kill Ayanami – a high-ranking official who killed Teito's father – Teito is discovered and imprisoned. Mikage, willing to help him, will find a way to make him escape and Teito will end up in 7th District Church and take in by the bishops. From that moment onward, Teito will struggle to find the truth about his own past and behind his role in the change of the fate of the world. 07-ghost and Owari No Seraph both start with the same premises; we find two orphans, and both of them with a past as slaves. Both of them lost everything and swore revenge, and their lives became all about that. They both wanted to have a better life together with their best friends, but that dream was shredded to pieces and they had to adapt to a new setting and face the fact that things went wrong with almost no possibilities to fix it back. The military theme is strong in both these shows, and the relationship between Guren and Yuu is very similar to the one between Frau and Teito, since both Guren and Frau love teasing the main protagonist. Putting the teases aside, Guren, as well as Frau, truly care about Yuu and Teito and their role is almost like that of an older brother. What else can we say? Both Teito and Yuu don't want to befriend anyone and yet they end up surrounded by friends, so they are very similar in their characters. As you can see, Owari No Seraph and 07-ghost share a lot, so if you like one, you will like the other as well!

3. Koutetsujou No Kabaneri (Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress)

koutetsujou no kabaneri dvd
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Official Website" url="http://kabaneri.com" ]
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" April 2016 – July 2016 "]

On the island of Hinomoto, people have built station to shelter themselves from horrible monsters that can infect humans with a bite, and turn them into undead creatures known as Kabane. The only way to kill Kabane is to pierce their hearts, which are protected by iron. This story revolves around Ikoma, a boy who helps to build the Hayajiro – a locomotive running on steam – and who created his own weapon against Kabane. He was waiting for a chance to use his “Tsuranukizutsu” and prove that it worked, and when he came to know Mumei that the station was under attack, he just ran to prove the world that Kabane can be fought back! Both Owari No Seraph and Koutetsujou No Kabaneri are about mankind about to be destroyed by superhuman monsters; vampires and Kabane – that are essentially zombies. The two protagonists, Yuu and Ikoma, are both fed up with their surrounding and they want to struggle and change things up, and say to the world not to give up. What's more, Mikaela – Yuu's family – and Ikoma share the same fate; they are no longer humans, as Mikaela is half a vampire and Ikoma is half a Kabane, but managed to stop the infection somehow. So we can say that both of them are half the creatures they are fighting against. Owari No Seraph and Koutetsujou No Kabaneri are both shows about the downfall of humanity, and the courage of humans to fight the enemy to regain back what is lost. It's not a stretch, even though Koutetsujou No Kabaneri has a horror trait with it, it shares with Owari No Seraph what it takes for you to love it!

4. God Eater

God Eater dvd
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="B010CKPXOK" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 13 " aired=" July 2015 – March 2016 "]

It's the year 2071 and mankind is about to be erased by monsters called “Aragami”. The organization called Fenrir was built with the purpose to fight Aragami back, and to try to save humanity. Fenrir's strength lies with the “God Eaters”, who are humans able to use the so-called “God Arcs”, the only weapons that can destroy Aragami. Lenka Utsugi is one of the most promising God Eaters, and as such, he must fight with all his might to erase Aragami once and for all! With this plot, it's clear as daylight that Owari No Seraph and God Eater share some important similarities. First of it all, both these shows are supernatural action anime. In both Owari No Seraph and God Eater we find humanity struggling to survive against monsters, via two associations; Fenrir for God Eater, and the Imperial Demon Army for Owari No Seraph. In both these shows the scenery is apocalyptic and dystopic, with a little party of people who fight to find a way to survive and have the upper hand against the enemy. Even the weaponry is similar, as the God Eaters use the God Arcs who are uncommon and are shaped on the single fighter, similarly in Owari No Seraph the demon who becomes the weapon is shaped on the single fighter. As for the main character, Lenka and Yuu don't share the same character, and yet they share the same willing to save and protect people. Probably God Eater has a more serious trait with it, as the comedy parts are near to zero, but if you liked those beautiful fights in Owari No Seraph and the main theme of humanity trying to be free again, we think that God Eater is what you all are searching for!

5. Ao No Exorcist (Blue Exorcist)

Ao no Exorcist dvd
[sourceLink asin="B00DK3PAR2" asin_jp="" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 25 " aired=" April 2011 – October 2011 "]

Rin Okumura is a troublesome and yet ordinary boy. He is fast to start a fight, doesn't want to study and he has a twin brother who, unlike him, is perfect whatever he does – Yukio. A bitter twist of fate, though, changes Rin's life for good. In fact, he discovers to be the son of Satan. If things could get worse, now Satan wants his son back and wants Rin to help him conquer “Assiah” – the human world. Rin is not one to lower his head; he decides to study to become an exorcist and change is fate by defending Assiah with his brother Yukio! These two anime share a lot of similarities, even with some characters. Let's start from the beginning; we find in both these shows main characters who are left without family. Rin and Yukio lose the man who raised them, Fujimoto, while Yuu and Mika get separated during childhood. It's interesting to see how Rin and Yuu resemble each other a lot. Both of them are hot-headed, over-confident and are prone to put themselves in trouble. In the beginning, both of them have a hard time dealing with one of their classmates, who resemble each other a lot as well. We're talking about Ryuuji Suguro and Shihou Kimizuki. Just like Suguro suddenly becomes competitive with Rin, similarly Kimizuki does the same with Yuu, and in both cases their fights start some very funny gags. We find in both Owari No Seraph and Ao No Exorcist a school setting in the beginning, and Rin, exactly like Yuu, in spite his character is befriended by a lot of people. Even Mika and Yukio share some similarities, as both of them are madly in love with their brothers, and yet they hide something. Both Owari No Seraph and Ao No Exorcist are supernatural action anime, so if you like that atmosphere, and the typical shounen protagonist, we are sure you're gonna love Ao No Exorcist!

6. Tokyo Ghoul

Tokyo Ghoul dvd
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="B00LGK3YL0" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 24 " aired=" July 2014 – March 2015 "]

Tokyo has become a scary city where ghouls – creatures devouring humans – live. Ghouls can hide themselves among humans, waiting in the shadows to strike. In this merciless Tokyo, Ken Kaneki lives his life as a bookworm, and he is in love with a seemingly bookworm girl, whose name is Rize Kamishiro. One day, Rize approaches Ken and asks him out, and that is the moment when Ken's life drastically change. Rize is actually a ghoul, and in the attempt to devour Ken, something goes wrong and she dies. Ken, who is on the verge of death himself, is saved and for a bad twist of events, he has some parts of Rize installed into his body during the surgery. That's how he becomes half a ghoul! Even though Tokyo Ghoul has a strong horror trait with it, it shares with Owari No Seraph important similarities. For starters, both the protagonists are orphans. Both Ken and Yuu have a friend that they consider as a family, Hide and Mika. In both these shows we find humans fighting against another race. Another important similarity is the fact that in spite Ken hates ghouls, he becomes one. Similarly, Mika who hates vampires, becomes one of them. So we find main characters hating half of what they are, and yet struggling for the sake of their beloved friends. Kaneki, as well as Mika with Yuu, wants to protect Hide from both Ghouls and humans. Both these show face the pain of losing comrades, and as a consequence both Ken and Yuu decide to become stronger to finally save humanity, even if it means sacrificing themselves. Ken and Yuu are very different in character, but they both share the willing to fight with all their might for a better future. Don't be put down by the fact that Tokyo Ghoul has no comedy part with it; it's totally worth your time... and your tears!

Let us start with a show that is still ongoing, so you better check it out as soon as possible. World Trigger shows a world where a mysterious gate opens and creatures from another dimension start crawling through it to attack humankind. It’s only thanks to the help of the Border Defense Agency that these monsters are defeated. The viewers follow the members of this organization on their everlasting fight to save mankind. Like in Owari no Seraph we have an organization that fights a strong enemy and both shows try to portray the teamwork between the different members. We see a bunch of different characters and how they interact with each other. Fans of Action or Seinen should check World Trigger out since it does a great job at entertaining its viewers.

2. Attack on Titan (Shingeki no Kyojin)

attack on titan dvd1
[Information episodes=" 25 " aired=" April 2013 - September 2013 "]

I know what some of you might think now: Attack on Titan is nothing like Owari no Seraph. And I have to admit that the story of Eren Jaeger and his friends fighting against Titans seems to have nothing to do with Yuuichirou’s battle against vampires. Still, the shows are more similar than you might think. Both main characters only have one goal on their minds: to completely extinguish one species in order to get revenge for the people that have been killed. They are both filled with determination and fight each fight as if it was their last one. Also, in both anime we can see some major plot twists as well as great animation. While the dynamics of Attack on Titan are hard to top, Owari no Seraph might manage to get close to this anime legend.

3. Bokurano

[Information episodes=" 24 " aired="April 2007 - September 2007 "]

Bokurano is a show that focuses on a group of kids in an apocalyptic universe. The group meets a weird man called Kokopelli who asks them to test a game he’s been programming. Most of them agree and sign a contract with him. What they didn’t realize was that the game becomes reality and they are the ones who have to fight in order to win the game. Like in Owari no Seraph they have to make decisions and fight against a seemingly undefeatable enemy. The show itself is really unique not only with its main idea, but also its character design and the pace of the story. But unique shows are always worth a try so check Bokurano out when you get the chance.

[Information episodes=" 25 " aired="April 2011 - October 2011 "]

Next up is a show for people that prefer Fantasy to Sci-Fi. Ao no Exorcist tells the story of orphan Okumura Rin who has to discover the horrible truth behind his past. Growing up as a common trouble-maker he has to find out that he’s in fact the son of a human mother and Satan, the god of demons. While being constantly torn between his two sides Rin sets out to become an exorcist and to become strong enough to kill Satan. Like Owari no Seraph we have a lot of supernatural elements, and those of you that liked the vampires of Owari no Seraph should also enjoy the demons in Ao no Exorcist. We have great fights, amazing artwork and character design and a good soundtrack. Overall, Ao no Exorcist is an entertaining show that doesn’t do anything outstandingly different but somehow still manages to be memorable.

In the universe of Black Bullet a virus called Gastrea restricts humanity to living in small communities, constantly fearing for their lives. Our hero Rentarou fights together with young girl Enju to get humanity back on its feet. The story of Black Bullet starts out very similar to Owari no Seraph with a virus wiping out most of the earth’s population. A group of people survives and they start the Civil Security, an organization aiming to end Gastrea. Most of the elements of Owari no Seraph can also be enjoyed in Black Bullet. We have an ongoing fight with great action scenes and a male lead that’s determined to change this world.

6. Guilty Crown

Guilty Crown DVD
[Information episodes=" 22 " aired=" October 2011 - March 2012 "]

Last but not least is a show that you need to watch no matter what. Guilty Crown is set in a dystopian future similar to the one of Owari no Seraph, even though Guilty Crown might be a little bit more futuristic and has more Sci-Fi elements. The viewers follow Ouma Shu on his journey through a world that was affected by a deadly virus. Together with the mysterious and beautiful Inori he fights alongside of group of rebels against the Japanese government. The virus of Owari no Seraph could be compared to the Apocalypse Virus in Guilty Crown. Also, in both shows we see boys growing up all alone and being pushed into a new world where they have to join a group that seeks to overthrow a regime. But most importantly they are similar in their action scenes and their ability to grab the viewer’s attention. Also, Hiroyuki Sawano is the musical mastermind behind both shows as well as Attack on Titan so the soundtracks are similar in their brilliance. Guilty Crown is a high recommendation.

These were our recommendations for anime similar to Owari no Seraph. You might be wondering why we didn’t include any stories featuring vampires, but in my eyes that’s not the main focus of Owari no Seraph. It’s more about the struggle to survive in a dystopian future and having to fight in order to fulfill one’s life goal. As always, your input is more than welcome in the comment section down below. Let us know what you think of this list and also the first episodes of Owari no Seraph.

[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" July 4, 2014 – September 19, 2014 "]

Tokyo Ghoul looks at the city from a corrupt and merciless perspective, as vicious evil creatures called ghouls now exist alongside humans. The worst part of it all is their ability to take the form of humans and blend in with the rest of society. Ken unfortunately meets his demise when he is confronted by a ghoul he knew, leading him down a dark path of uncertainty. After he awakens and sees the outcome of the previous event, he now realizes he has transformed into a half ghoul, half-human and must now find a way to blend in with the evil corrupt community. Izumi and Kei are driven into a world of the unknown and must now come to learn of their dark future that lies ahead. They both were taken out of their comfort zone without permission, which led them into a chaotic and bloodthirsty atmosphere where they need to come up with the right solutions to survive. Every direction they head in is full of mystery, as the enemy is always tracking down their every move with the intent to erase them from existence. Strategy, planning, and outmaneuvering their opponents is how the two must survive, otherwise they run a huge risk of being outplayed by the opposition. Both shows are a game of chess, where each step you make can only lead you closer to the check mate so everything matters.

After succumbing to the full effects of Pupa, Yume undergoes a eerie transformation into a monstrous creature with an rapacious desire for flesh; Utsutsu, on the other hand, is only partially affected, gaining the incredible power to regenerate at will. Ensuring to keep the promise he made to himself years ago, Utsutsu is willing to sacrifice everything in order to always be there for his little sister. Pupa tells the story of a loving brother's desperate attempts to save his sister, while protecting the world from her uncontrollable hunger. The great similarity between the two is how both enemies have the unquenchable thirst for blood, and must devour other humans in order to survive. Yume and Utsutsu have to use their abilities to survive, even if it means to eating other people. Izumi's enemy have that very same ability as the aliens that burrow into a body must eat other humans to maintain their energy, and grow in strength. Both shows leave you questioning what could possibly happen, as each scene leads you down an uncertain road, and the enemy always planting different traps to throw you off. It shows us cannibalism in the extreme extent, which is just a reflection of how our own reality must cope with these sorts of problems on a daily basis.

Shinsekai yori tells a fascinating story of Saki and her friends as they journey to grow into their roles in a Utopian based world. Accepting these roles, however, might not come easy when faced with the dark and twisted truths of society, and the impending havoc born from the new corrupt world. Two opposing factions are neck and neck with eachother, as one tries to outsmart the other in a battle for supremacy. Izumi and Saki are thrown into uncharted territory where they must now face the shocking reality that lies in front of them. The premise of both stories are that each main character must confront a challenge, and each new one presents a much higher difficulty than the last. Certain scenes throughout both shows blur the line between what's good or bad, and so the viewer is drawn into these events along with the protagonist. Both anime question the judgment of the two characters, but also leave you scratching your head as to what you would do in that very moment.

Toshihiko, an expert swordsman and son of the Kifuuken organization's leader, puts himself in an awkward position and falls in love at first sight with a beautiful girl named Yuka; however, to Toshihiko's surprise he comes to realize that Yuka is in fact a Shokujinki. Kemonozume explores a territory that most find very gruesome and inhumane. The truth is that this type of ruthless behavior exists in our reality, and has existed throughout our life span. Cannibalism is the act in which one human thrives off the flesh of another human, in order to survive. In both shows, there exists a race of monsters that have come to Earth to feed on unsuspecting prey, and to take control over the human race. Toshihiko much like Izumi, come across these monsters on a daily basis, and at some point must build relationships with a few in order to survive. Their lives become a race in order to stop the major threat that inflicts suffering upon society before all of humanity is wiped out.

Humanity has been pushed to the brink of extinction following the evolution of man-eating monsters called “Aragami”. They conquered their territory, devouring almost everything in their path and leaving nothing behind. To defeat them, an organization named Fenrir was established as Earth's answer to save humanity through the use of “God Eaters. One such God Eater is Lenka Utsugi, a New-Type whose God Arc takes the form of both blade and gun.  Lenka must master his God Arc if he is to fulfill his desire of wiping out the Aragami once and for all. The monsters continue to multiply while the fragments of humanity struggle to survive. God Eater. much like Parasyte, features characters who have acquired their ability from the enemy, and now must use that very same power against them to protect Earth. Both Lenka and Izumi must form a bond with their weapons and master them before the threat becomes too big to handle. Each must form an alliance with various individuals in order to seek out more answers behind the invasion, and use the data to outwit their opponents without harming too many casualties. It's an action packed adventure that leaves you guessing at every moment, as to what could possibly happen to the main character if they make one fatal mistake.

The Players in Zetman have a similar mission and that's to burrow themselves into the skin of innocent humans, and using them as tools for their destructive purposes. Speed Grapher
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="B0009N6M6Y" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 24 " aired=" April, 2005 - Sep, 2005 "]

Set in a fictional Tokyo where the wealth-gap is exponential, the poor are barely surviving while the rich are setting new standards in moral degradation, greed and an endless desire for pleasure. Saiga, a war photojournalist, infiltrates the Roppongi Club, a secret society comprised of the country’s richest and most powerful. It is there that Saiga discovers the kidnapped Kagura, a mysterious girl who has the power to grant the wish of anyone who is allowed to come in contact with her. Saiga rescues her and manages to escape, but not without setting off a series of events that lead to a massive manhunt by the Roppongi Club’s most dangerous members to get Kagura back at any cost.

One of my favorite features of Parasyte - The Maxim is how it incorporates themes of human nature’s inherent duality. On one hand, much of humanity is monstrous, akin to selfish, destructive, demonic behavior. Yet on the other hand, altruism, the act of selflessly helping others even at the detriment to one’s self is a large component of what sets us apart from other animals. Not only does Speed Grapher take this concept and run with it, this anime does it so exceptionally well you can’t help but question yourself on a deep, existential level.

Tokyo Ghoul DVD
[sourceLink asin="B00VVQD80Q" asin_jp="" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" July, 2014 - Sep, 2014 "]

Ken Kaneki, a college student and lover of literature, meets a beautiful like-minded girl named Rize Kamishiro in a coffee shop in Tokyo. After a perfect date, Ken offers to walk her home, only to discover that she was a flesh-eating monster, known as a ghoul. He narrowly survives being eaten after she gets crushed by a falling construction platform. After he is rushed to the hospital however, the surgeons have no choice but to perform a transplant using Rize’s organs, transforming Ken into a ghoul/human hybrid, instilling him to struggle with an unshakable desire for human flesh.

Just like Parasyte, Tokyo Ghoul’s plot plays with the idea of humans not being on top of the food chain. Rather than an alien parasite, the ghouls are something else entirely, but the humans-as-food concept is still very largely intact. And just like Shinichi, Ken is still part human, leaving him with his consciousness, including his moral ground intact. There’s lots of blood and guts, so fans of Parasyte’s shocking scenes will enjoy Tokyo Ghoul for the same reasons.

Koichi Sakakibara is transferring to Yomiyama North Junior High School, a private school with a strange and tragic past. Suddenly, Koichi’s fellow students and their relatives begin to die in mysterious and violent ways. With the help of Mei Misaki, a fellow student who seems to go mysteriously unnoticed by her classmates, Koichi must find who or what is causing the murders and stop it before it’s too late.

There is a lot to love about Another, especially if you like Parasyte. Just like Shinichi and Migi, the relationship of Koichi and Mei are entirely secret; Koichi is the only student who can see and hear her. Although there aren’t any sci fi elements to be found, there is plenty of great pacing and unexpected twists, not to mention plenty of blood. The sense of dread is cranked up to 11 here, and the tone and atmosphere make for chilling good watch, especially at night.

4. Pupa

Pupa
[sourceLink asin="B00HIPCDV4" asin_jp="" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" Jan, 2014 - Mar, 2014 "]

Pupa tells the dark story of an orphaned teenager Utsutsu and his younger sister Yume who become infected by a mysterious virus called “Pupa,” a disease which turns its host into insatiable flesh eating monsters. Although they are both infected by the same virus, Utsutsu gained the power of limb regeneration, which he uses to his advantage to keep the abomination within Yume at contained.

The theme and overarching plot elements of Pupa are very similar to Parasyte, including the corruption of human life due to a parasitic creature. Also, much like to Parasyte, Pupa explores the theme of questioning the value of human life. However, this anime also delves into topics such as domestic and child abuse, and the whole tone is very serious. This anime is not for the faint of heart!

The Diclonius, a mutated species of humans with the power to destroy all humanity, have been captured and isolated by the government for study and experimentation. One such Diclonius, Lucy, breaks free from her confines and begins taking bloody revenge on all those standing in her way. Before she gets a chance to escape, she is shot by a surviving security guard and falls into the ocean, only to be found by two teenagers, Kouta and Yuka. After being struck with amnesia, they called her by the only thing she could say: Nyuu. However, the dangerous side of Lucy lies dormant within.

A Science Fiction masterpiece, Elfen Lied is a fantastic series for Parasyte fans for many reasons. The level of mystery surrounding the Diclonii, including Lucy, makes for an astounding story to build around. Just like the mysterious lifeforms of Parasyte, their motives are not shrouded in fog. Why are they so disposed to the destruction of the human race? The Diclonii can also sense each other and have a deep, telepathic connection, just like the creatures of Parasyte. The action is top notch and the gore, while shocking, is not overdone. With only 13 episodes in the series, this is a great anime who are looking for something quick to watch through.

High school students Kei and Masaru, while attempting to save a drunkard stuck on the subway tracks, end up getting hit by the train and killed. Rather than resting in peace, they are transported to an apartment with a handful of strangers, nearly barren with the exception of a large black sphere called “Gantz.” In this strange, pseudo-afterlife, they must play his game. Suiting up with ability-enhancing gear and equipping high-tech weaponry, Kei and Masaru get ready for the biggest challenge of their lives.

Gantz is a mind-bending science fiction anime that takes everything to the extreme. Gratuitous, non-stop action are the highlight of this series, with plenty of over-the-top scenes that will make your head spin and keep you watching. Just like Parasyte, Gantz isn’t afraid to crank up the weirdness.

Anime is another form of escapism. We all love the giant robots, the super powered fighters and the crazy fantasy stories. However, one thing that otaku pride themselves on that their home grown cartoons (historically) didn’t do was tell real stories with human characters, breaking the “cartoons are for kids” stereotype. You can probably point to many shows that do this, but one particular show that captured the anime world’s attention was AnoHana. AnoHana has a lot of traditional anime calling cards; teenage cast, slight fantasy elements and tons of drama. What set Anohana apart was the realism it approached those clichés to create a highly relatable and touching human drama. To recap, AnoHana followed the exploits of sullen Jinta, his former friends who have all grown up (and apart) and Menma, the ghost of an old childhood friend whom only Jinta can see. Ever since Menma’s death, Jinta has become depressed and his former friends have all gone their separate ways, while still being united by the haunting memory of losing their old friend Menma. Through the stories twists and turns, we learned to really feel for these characters and even see bits of them in ourselves. The time is the near future. The place is Sugimori City. What seems like a normal bedroom community is in fact a large scale test site for an experimental project known as the Kizuna system. The system aims to break down the doors between people’s hearts by allowing them to literally share each other’s pain. Enter young, emotionless high schooler Katsuhira. He along with his classmates are chosen as test subjects for the Kizuna System project. What does fate have in store for Katsuhira and the gang and who is the mysterious girl Noriko who seems to be behind the entire project? Kiznaiver immediately gained early fanfare due to its writer Mari Okada, who also wrote AnoHana along with its animation studio Trigger. You may remember Trigger for such anime as Kill La Kill and Ninja Slayer From Animation. Kiznaiver inherits both Triggers’ bold visual stylings and Okada’s strong character drama work. The Kiznaiver aspect gives this work a bit of a science fiction/mystery flair but the story stays grounded in the interpersonal relationships between the characters. As you can see from the trailer, this is definitely a show to watch in HD!

Staying on the penned by Okada train, we make our next stop at Hanasaku Iroha. This show follows 16 year old Ohana Matsumae, a level headed girl if somewhat dissatisfied with her life. It would be hard to be satisfied, always having to pick up after her lazy mother. One day, when her mom randomly springs the “I’m going to elope with my boyfriend” card out of nowhere, she foists Ohana off to the country to live with her grandmother. Seems to be just the jolt Ohana thinks she needs to shake up her dreary life. Only she finds that she is foisted off to an inn TO WORK where her grandmother is in charge and is the boss from Hell! Hanasaku Iroha gained a sizable fan following due to the grounded character interplay and developing relationships between the inn’s employees. At the core of it all is Ohana, a cute little dynamo of positivity and initiative. While she and the rest of the workers have their own flaws and hang ups, it is a thrill seeing them grow as people and as a unit. While it is more optimistic and less moody than her other works, it still has the strong Okada touch of realistic dialogue and character growth. The great animation from P.A. Works doesn’t hurt either.

We take a slight detour from Okada-ville and head into the bright lights of Ghibli City! The famed studio has created many a beloved film, mostly under the helm of Hayao Miyazaki. However, this film is one of the few Ghibli films not directed by him. That being said, it maintains the high standard of Ghibli quality. The story revolves around introverted 12 year old Anna who moves from Sapporo to the country to live with her aunt and uncle. While there she notices a strange abandoned mansion where she sees a young blonde girl who appears and disappears at night. Anna meets the young girl named Marnie and learns about her life and the mystery surrounding her existence. Similar to Spirited Away, this film focuses on an inward looking young girl adjusting to a new environment. It also has a touch of fantasy, although the mood here is much more subdued and restrained than in Miyazaki’s masterpiece. Still it has the requisite high quality music and animation that we have come to expect from Ghibli, along with quite the tear jerker of a story. You will definitely need the tissues around during the end of this film.

[Information episodes=" 13 " aired=" April 2015 – June 2015 "]
Plastic Memories is an original science fiction story from Doga Kobo studio. In the future android technology has developed so much that androids (named Giftas) are nearly indistinguishable from humans. They fit in seamlessly with human society but they have a short lifespan of 81,920 hours. When their time is up, it’s up to the SAI Corporation to retrieve the expired Giftas. We follow new Gifta retriever Tsukasa along with his Gifta partner Isla as they try to retrieve Giftas from their previous homes (which can be a painful process in many ways) along with watching them grow closer as a team….and maybe more. While Plastic Memories has no shortage of cute girls (there is the tsundere, the onee-san, the gossip, the quiet one) and silly comedy, it has a surprisingly dramatic core. The core concept of a Gifta’s short lifespan and the grief caused for families by their leaving is surprisingly engrossing. The second main thing to watch is the growing relationship between and how it develops. This is a short but sweet series that is worth a look.

The story follows the love triangle between twenty-something Hazuki, the beautiful, older woman Rokka and Rokka’s former husband Shimao. A fairly standard romantic story setup except for the fact that Shimao is dead! What’s more, only Hazuki can see his ghost and he is none too keen on Hazuki putting the moves on his old flame! This is a sweet, low key romance story that sets itself apart from its contemporaries by eschewing teenage romance and focusing on adults. Hazuki and Shimao’s constant feuding is amusing but Natsuyuki Rendezvous takes its adult romance seriously. The relationships are realistically portrayed and while there are some fantasy elements much like AnoHana, the focus is squarely on the main cast and their relationships. A very easy rec for AnoHana fans.

We finish up with a currently airing show. Orange is another low key tale based off a shoujo manga. Naho Takemiya is a bright and cheerful if somewhat shy high school sophomore who lives her life like any other girl. All this changes when she receives a mysterious letter. The letter in question is from her-self 10 years in the future! It also comes with a warning, telling Naho to prevent her “biggest regret”. That regret just happens to revolve around the new (and handsome) transfer student Kakeru Naruse. Orange is a beautiful and accessible series about high school romance and relationships. Naho is a young character who is easy to root for and her male counterpart Kakeru is accessible and charming. However, quite why Kakeru is tied to Naho’s biggest regret is the key mystery to pay attention to. That is of course if you aren’t too distracted by the absolutely gorgeous background art care of TMS Entertainment. Make sure to check back during the summer for more Orange related articles here at Honey’s as we keep an eye on this title!

Conclusion

AnoHana created a real tough act to follow in the animated drama department. Its perfect balance of light fantasy and realistic character drama is unique and engaging. Due to these reasons, it became a sizable success both in Japan and abroad. However, we think that the above 6 shows should provide some more dramatic goodness. Keep it here at Honey’s anime for even more recommendations. Until next time, keep those tissues handy!

Who it caters to

As anime begins to occupy a larger space in nerd culture, the rise of anime games has begun to rise up to meet the new demand. While there have been One Piece games on the PlayStation 2, Gamecube, and Wii, that have been brought over from Japan, the PlayStation 3 really kicked off the rise and frequency of One Piece games getting translated. The PlayStation 3 not only boasts all three Pirate Warriors games, which are a hack and slash warriors type games, but also One Piece Unlimited World Red which was also released on the Vita and supported cross play. It’s a good time to be a One Piece fan given all the video game options nowadays and One Piece: Burning Blood continues that tradition by bringing something new to the table.

What to expect

one-piece-game-burning-blood-img2
Those familiar with Shonen Jump’s other famous franchise, Naruto, and the accompanying fighting games in the Ninja Storm series will find similar gameplay and fun in One Piece: Burning Blood. The game takes the popular One Piece franchise and turns it into a well-rounded fighting game featuring several different ways to play, giving players various options once all the story modes have been completed.

Story *Spoilers Ahead for the Show/Manga*

one-piece-game-burning-blood-img3
For those who are already fans of the manga and anime, the story mode revolves around the Paramount War and takes players through different character’s viewpoints during the epic battle. It’s a story that has been told and retold a countless number of times. Ace has been abducted by Blackbeard who then brings him to the Marines. The Marines then announce the date Ace is set to be executed in an attempt to lure the Whitebeard Pirates into an all-out war. The trap is set and triggered, but no one expected Luffy and Jinbe appear out of nowhere and assist in the rescue mission and this throws a wrench in Sengoku’s plot. Luffy frees Ace and as they make their way back to safety, Akainu taunts Ace by insulting Whitebeard. Ace takes the bait, unable to control the rage inside of him and that is all Akainu needs to take advantage of the situation. Akainu launches an attack on an unaware Luffy and Ace instinctively throws himself in front of his little brother, sacrificing himself to save Luffy. From here on, the battle becomes absolute chaos. For those who are unfamiliar with the franchise, the story mode might not make any sense seeing as it throws the player in the middle of a major arc that is far from the beginning of the story and contains major spoilers to the plot, although most anime fans know by this point that Ace dies. For those just diving into One Piece, the various other modes can be quite fun and are still highly recommended.

Gameplay

Within One Piece: Burning Blood, there are several different game modes which allow options to players who may become burnt out on story mode. When the game is started, Paramount War, which is the story mode, is the only option available, but for a good reason. The first several battles of Paramount War Mode serve as a tutorial to get players acquainted with the controls before they go off and have their own adventures in the game.
one-piece-game-burning-blood-img4
Paramount War Mode tells the same story through the eyes of different characters, but the only option to start with is Luffy. Once Luffy is unlocked, another character’s story is unlocked and so on and so forth. The battles in this mode are fairly quick and for this review, it took only an afternoon to clear all of Paramount War. The great thing about this mode is that not only do characters become unlocked as the story progresses, but that the other characters that have been unlocked but aren’t playable still gain experience and grow with the party which helps out later down the road. While Paramount War is short, the mode has replay value. After a player has cleared a battle, new winning conditions will appear that will unlock EX battles or side battles that add more to the story. The creators really tried to stretch as much game time as possible into this mode considering the small scope of the timeline. Paramount War isn’t the only playable area of the game, though. The game boasts a pretty healthy online community with ranked and unranked matches. Titles, banners, and icons can be unlocked to display next to a player's’ gamertag, something that is reminiscent of Call of Duty almost. The customization options are limitless and it encourages players to experiment with different characters and combinations. Matches can be customized as well in order to accommodate two or four player matches as well as setting aside private slots for friends.
one-piece-game-burning-blood-img5
Free Battle mode is exactly as it sounds. Players can pick up to nine characters to battle against whatever other characters they desire. This mode also supports two players on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, and has an Ad Hoc Fight Mode in the Vita version in order to play against other Vita players. Both of these options are fun to play with friends, though we only tested the PlayStation 4 version so we can’t confirm how smooth the Ad Hoc Fight Mode is. This mode also has a training mode for those wanting to become familiar with using different characters. The health bar constantly refreshes and there are several different settings for the computer so that players can focus on different aspects of training such as Guard Practice, Combo Training, and Normal Training. Computer player difficulties, as well as the Burning Gauge and Support Characters, can also be adjusted in the settings so that players can make the most of their practice and become familiar with the strategies and techniques of each character. In addition to Free Battle, Paramount War, and Online, there are two other playable modes: Pirate Flag Battle and WANTED Versus. The latter lists off different wanted posters with bounties with different win conditions so that players may level up their characters and earn rewards. This mode is fairly straightforward and offers limited time wanted posters, training posters under Rayleigh’s tutelage, as well as special high ranked posters that offer the ultimate challenge. This mode is a great place to level up and train characters before diving into the competitive online community and allows players to earn Beli in order to unlock different characters and power them up.
one-piece-game-burning-blood-img6
Probably one of the coolest and most original modes in the game, Pirate Flag Battle allows players to align themselves with one of the famous pirate crews within the One Piece world and conquer the New World. The battle system is still the same, but the concept of winning is slightly different. The game is entirely online and players must work with their teammates to win control over as many islands as possible. The more teammates that win on a certain island, the more control that crew has over it and their ranking will climb, but players don’t have an infinite amount of time to play around. Each game has a set time limit or “season” that lasts two weeks. After a season ends, players can begin all over again with another crew or the same crew. The goal is to ultimately control all of the islands by battling enemies who are found there. Some will have a ridiculous amount of HP and may take several different crew members over various amounts of time to knock the foe’s HP down to zero and claim the base. The online community for this mode also seems relatively active and healthy though a bit unbalanced seeing as many players choose the Straw Hat crew which makes it difficult to fight for territory. When the Straw Hats have two thousand players to fight for them, the twenty-seven members of the Sun Pirates really have no chance to climb up the leaderboard.

Honey's Gameplay Consensus:

One Piece: Burning Blood does an amazing job at customization and allows players to even change the theme of the HUD to several popular characters’ signature colors and styles as well as create their own pirate crews in order to streamline the menu process before matches. Control schemes can be changed to whatever the player wishes and the camera has three different optional angles to allow players the ultimate personal experience.
one-piece-game-burning-blood-img7
In regards to the controls themselves, they are easy to pick up and understand. In full disclosure, I am not a fighting game person, but I was able to navigate all the special attacks and moves with ease making the game quite enjoyable for anyone without prior experience to just have fun. Those who are competitive will also enjoy the online ranked matches available to them, so the game is quite versatile in that regard. The menus are also really easy to navigate giving players all the information they need at their fingertips. Matches consist of the player choosing at least three characters along with three support characters that give different bonuses and battling against three other characters. Characters are divided into Haki and Devil Fruit users and may use their abilities by pressing triangle once or in succession for a combo. A normal attack is used by pressing square and the more the button is pressed, the more damage is done to the opponent. Circle serves as the guard and X is jump. Different buttons can be pressed together to create different combos and once the Burning Gauge at the bottom left is full, players can “Awaken” by pressing R3 making all attacks do more damage. If R3 is pressed again, a special high powered move is unleashed that will create an incredible amount of damage. Players may also switch out their characters in rotations of three in order to block special attacks or be on the offensive. At the character selection menu, the game will only allow players to choose characters three at a time. The first three characters chosen will be the first three sent out and usable and once those three are defeated, the next three will rotate in and save for the opponent and for all support characters. The number of playable characters and combinations are astounding allowing for many different types of gameplay styles. While a good portion of the game was fun and enjoyable, there is always room for improvement. The 3D cell shading technique used for most of the cutscenes and gameplay is really gorgeous, but when the game cuts to the narrator and still shots from the anime are shown, the quick change in style is almost jarring. It can only be assumed that there were budget constraints that prevented those scenes from also receiving the 3D treatment as well. The character selection menus also suffer the same fate. While the actual playable characters are seen in their 3D models, the support characters that only boost characters’ stats are shown as they are in the anime, 2D. Again, it seems there may have been some budget constraints and since this really doesn’t affect the gameplay, it can be forgiven. While there are many different ways and options to play the game, the most disappointing mode seems to be the Paramount War mode which focuses on the story. While many other One Piece games start from the beginning or create a brand new adventure from scratch, OPBB focuses on such a small, yet very pivotal moment in the story and risks alienating those who are unfamiliar with the franchise. Even as a fan, the story mode still seems a bit lackluster and extremely short. It’s really fortunate that there are many end game options to continue the fun, but it’s still disappointing that one of the main modes of play doesn’t live up to the rest of the game. Now, most of this review utilized the PlayStation 4 Marineford Edition, but we also received and tested how the game translates to the Vita in order to utilize the game’s cross-saving feature. What cross-save does for those who are unfamiliar with the term, is allow those with a PlayStation 4 version of the game to upload their save to the PSN and then download that game save onto their Vita so that those with both versions of the game may take their saved data on the road and play. Sorry, XBO players, this is a Sony only feature! There were no problems transferring games between systems, but the quality between the Vita and PS4 version were night and day. It’s to be expected that the portable version would not be exactly the same, but many of the differences were by leaps and bounds. The graphics in the Vita version still feature the 3D cell shading technique, but the lines are a thicker black and the background stages are not, which wouldn’t be as big of a deal if the backgrounds were done well. It is really hard not stare at the almost Gamecube graphics in comparison to the well-made character models and it’s also a bit distracting. The game also had some frame-rate problems that distracted from the battles. In addition to the graphics, the Vita version controls were really hard to get the hang of. Since the Vita does not boast R1, R2, L1, and L2 buttons, the game has virtual buttons on the screen that serve the same purpose to swap out characters, but can be sometimes difficult to reach or miss entirely. Also, there are two other onscreen buttons available on the bottom corners that allow the player to adjust the camera. While the option is nice, these buttons are also somewhat awkward to reach. The game is still playable, but definitely not the same experience as its console big brother. Overall, the Vita version was underwhelming which is disappointing considering the console version is fairly solid.

Honey's Pros:

  • Long list of characters and customization options
  • Healthy online community
  • Several different playable modes allowing replayability
  • One Piece Fans will adore this game

Honey's Cons:

  • Vita version pales in comparison
  • The Paramount War mode is somewhat bland and short
  • Different art styles clash with each other
  • Unbalanced crew in Pirate Flag Battle mode

Honey's Final Verdict(Thoughts):

One Piece: Burning Blood is a bit of a love letter to One Piece fans, but it is nowhere near perfect and revisits a time that has become almost overdone not just in games, but overall in the franchise. While Unlimited World Red certainly had its fair share of problems, the idea of a new adventure involving the Strawhat Pirates was fun and pushed many players onward despite its problems in order to find out the conclusion of the story. OPBB has the reverse problem, the gameplay is quite fun, but the story has been played out in so many different ways that it would be wise to move on from Ace’s death and perhaps focus on a less explored storyline. The developers are in a bit of a hard spot considering the need and desire for more OP games, but are limited to how fast Oda can put out the manga. Perhaps now that Dressrosa has drawn its final curtain, players may see a fully realized game version of events. In any case, the game is still solid despite the story mode. Discovering how each character moves and interacts with each other before each match is wonderful and shows that the developers really paid attention to the little details and quirks of Oda’s creations. The online modes are really fun, especially the Pirate Flag Battle which has taken an awesome spin on things. While it might not be the best game to introduce newbies too, it’s still a fun game to play with two players in free battle and a solid fighting game. For those wishing to purchase the game, it is highly recommended to pick up the console version or even the forthcoming Steam version and to maybe pass over the Vita version unless you are someone who loves to take these games on the go. Regardless, this is hands down a must buy for any One Piece fan!

Summary of Otakon

Otakon is one of the great anime and Japanese pop culture conventions in the United States and one of the biggest on the east coast. The convention, which has been located in Baltimore, Maryland for the last 17 years, has been a welcome guest for the Inner Harbor community as cosplayers and convention goers patronize many of the local business and restaurants in costume. Unfortunately, Otakon has outgrown the Inner Harbor and will be leaving it behind for the much larger convention center 60 miles south in Washington, DC. The move will allow it to exceed the 29,000-member cap of this year’s convention.
otakon 2016 image1
“While Baltimore has been our home for many years, and we leave it with a hint of regret, we have had to acknowledge the realities of our space usage. In order to better provide for our growth, we accepted a competitive bid in June of 2013 to move to the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C. We know there will be challenges associated with moving to a new location, but we are energized and hopeful that the move will provide new opportunities,” said Alyce Wilson, head of Otakon Press Relations.

otakon 2016 image3

Thursday, August, 11th Matsuri

The Matsuri at West Shore Park in Baltimore is the kickoff event before the convention and is open to the public. There’s a yukata contest, followed by a concert with the groups NPC Collective, Jason Charles Miller, and Lotus Juice and Shihoko Hirata.

Friday, August, 12th Day 1

otakon 2016 image4
The convention really gets going with panels on Girl Power: Feminism and the Magical Girl Genere, 70s Anime Funtime, and Sentai Filmworks Industry Panel to name only a few examples. The panels, workshops, and autograph sessions begin at 9 a.m. and continue throughout the day. The organized cosplay photoshoots begin and give you a chance to get photos of various cosplayers from your favorite shows and games such as Love Live!, Kingdom Hearts, Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure, and Fallout. The swing dance room opens at nine for the 18+ crowd to dance the night away.

Saturday, August 13th Day 2

otakon 2016 image5
The line to get into the convention center on Saturday is often more than a half a mile long. Remember it’s August in the mid-Atlantic, so it’s bound to be hot. If you don’t have to get in the door right away and you are wearing a hot or heavy costume, we recommend waiting until after 10 a.m. when you can walk right into the air conditioned center. We know you want swag and all the big dealers have exclusives. You need to be first in line in some cases since quantiles are limited, such as the P.A. Works replica key frame from Shirobako in a Mushino Animation envelope. You could get some other free stuff by signing up for trial memberships. For example, Daisuki was giving away posters for Tales of Zestra X if you signed up for a trial membership and Crunchy Roll was offering oversized swag bags with proof of subscription. The Masquerade, held down the street at the Royal Farms Arena, was held at 7 p.m. and designed for cosplayers to preform skits and show their talent in costume craft by giving them a safe area to present their more elaborate and sometimes delicate cosplay. The highlight the evening was a concert by MICHI. You can also attend a Maid Café Show that runs all day, but be warned there is a long line to get in and you could wait an hour or more. The panels and workshops are still in full swing, with industry panels like Pony Canyon, Right Stuff anime, and Aniplex. The DJ dances begin at Otakon after dark and run from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m.

Sunday, August 14th Day 3

Otakon-2016_0257
Source: AFG-MEDIA
The crowd doesn’t get any smaller, especially on the dealers’ floor on the last day; they close at 3 p.m. You will find yourself surrounded as every conventioneer vies for a last minute deal. The panels are still going on, too, such as a great one on The Visual Novel: History of the Unrecognized Narrative Art. It offered a great explanation of how to create a narrative and techniques to use in crafting a visual novel. The convention even has some more involved workshops on how to create a panel for a convention and how to wear a kimono. The convention also has a many, many autograph sessions and panels from your favorite voice actors and singers like MICHI, Yui Makino, Diana Garnet, and the cast of Pokemon spread out over the preceding days.

Final Thoughts

We loved our time at Otakon and were able to meet some amazing people like Abby Murphy, who talked with us about her love of the genre and how “it allows for a real diversity of stories to be told. The fact that a lot of girls are featured in anime and it isn’t something you see in mainstream stuff in the states. The weekend had record heat and the convention center even had to pull some of its events inside because of it, but we soldiered on. We cosplayed, we enjoyed some LARPing, and amazing discussions ranging from the funny and silly to serious as we examined themes present in anime in the company of our fellow Otaku. We celebrated our Otaku lives in a safe space with no judgement, inside or outside the convention center. We will miss returning to the safe space Baltimore has created for us next Otakon. “Everyone is so friendly and nice,” said cosplayer Paul Hazlett of the convention atmosphere. “When I first did cosplay I was afraid that people would think that I’d look silly. But everyone who comes up to you wants to take your picture and is like wow! You did such a good job. We can’t say we’re not worried that the new, larger Otakon in DC will change the feel of the convention, but we have hope that bigger will mean better. We leave you with the updated web address for the new Otakon: dc.otakon.com so you can start your planning for next year.

Top 10 Ground Type Pokémon

While diversity is important for any would-be Pokémaster, everyone knows that out of all 18 types of Pokémon, when it comes time to pound, you gotta go with Ground. Their rock-hard defense makes them immune to all electricity moves, and the brute strength they often offer is super effective against five distinct Pokémon groups! Here are our top 10 Ground Type Pokémon.

[ad_top2 class="mt40 mb40"]

10. Hippowdon

Hippowdon pokemon
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Pokemon Wikia" url="http://pokemon.wikia.com/wiki/Hippowdon" ]
  • Generation: Fourth
  • Pokédex: 450

This heavyweight Ground-type evolves from Hippopotas, and as its name implies, greatly resembles a hippopotamus. Its coloration depends on its gender, but both male and female Hippowdon have several holes on their backs and snouts, in which they store sand used to generate sandstorms during attacks. It is an incredibly aggressive Pokémon with large teeth and a jaw powerful enough to crush a car!

9. Nidoking

Nidoking pokemon
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Pokemon Wikia" url="http://pokemon.wikia.com/wiki/Nidoking" ]
  • Generation: First
  • Pokédex: 34

Nidoking is the final evolution of the Nidoran and evolves from the Nidorino. It is a Poison-Ground hybrid, and one of the few gender-specific evolutions. Its female equivalent is the Nidoqueen. It is a large, bipedal purple Pokémon with lizard-like features, including large ears and a horn sprouting from its head. It is another very powerful Pokémon and uses its tail to smash its prey before ruthlessly charging them down with its steel-like hide. It can inflict Poison damage using the ability Poison Sting, and can inflict massive damage with the move Thrash, although at the risk of leaving the user confused.

8. Gastrodon

Gastrodon pokemon
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Pokemon Wikia" url="http://pokemon.wikia.com/wiki/Gastrodon" ]
  • Generation: Fourth
  • Pokédex: 423

Gastrodon is a dual-type Water/Ground Pokémon with two distinct colorations and slightly different features, depending on what side of the Sinnoh mountain range it lives on. It lives in shallow tidal pools and evolves from Shellos. Like its earlier form, it greatly resembles a much cuter version of a sea slug. Despite its appearance, it has only one weakness (Grass-type), and is capable of dishing out surprising amounts of damage with its poisonous attacks, and is overall quite well-balanced.

7. Steelix

Steelix pokemon
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Pokemon Wikia" url="http://pokemon.wikia.com/wiki/Steelix" ]
  • Generation: Second
  • Pokédex: 208

Steelix is a dual-type Steel/Ground Pokémon that evolves from Onix. It is a serpentine creature made up of discreet, rock-like sections that are a steely grey, and lead to its massive head, which possesses a wide jaw filled with large teeth capable of chewing through boulders. While it is powerful in its standard form, it also possesses a Mega Evolution, in which the cells in its body crystallize, making it almost impervious to damage. However, it's powered up form isn’t without its drawbacks, as its immense strength comes at the cost of speed.

6. Excadrill

Excadrill pokemon
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Pokemon Wikia" url="http://pokemon.wikia.com/wiki/Excadrill" ]
  • Generation: Fifth
  • Pokédex: 530

Excadrill is a Ground-Steel hybrid that evolves from Drilbur. Like Drilbur, it resembles a mole, although this evolved state resembles a warrior, with its sharp front claws and a large blade extending from the top of its head. It is capable of straightening its entire body which it can then spin rapidly, to drill through the earth, and even metals like iron and steel, which is valuable when used for construction, but can also devastate subway systems and man-made tunnels. It sometimes starts with the move Mud Slap, which does Ground damage and lowers an opponent’s accuracy.

[ad_middle]

5. Rhyperior

Rhyperior pokemon
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Pokemon Wikia" url="http://pokemon.wikia.com/wiki/Rhyperior" ]
  • Generation: Fourth
  • Pokédex: 464

Evolving from Rhydon, Rhyperior is the final evolution of Rhyhorn. It is a Ground-Rock hybrid that resembles a cross between a dinosaur and rhinoceros. It is bipedal and has a brown, hard, plate-like skin, as well as a drill-shaped horn coming out of the center of its head. It is an immensely powerful Pokémon, capable of toppling buildings and boring through diamonds with its horn. It is also super tough, capable of withstanding extreme heat, and even molten magma. One of its means of attack is to take rocks and boulders and insert them into the holes in its hands, after which it will fire them at its enemies like massive bullets.

4. Swampert

Swampert Pokémon
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Pokemon Wikia" url="http://pokemon.wikia.com/wiki/Swampert" ]
  • Generation: Third
  • Pokédex: 260

Swampert evolves from Marshtomp and is the final evolution of the infamous Mudkip. It is a Water/Ground Pokémon with a large cobalt blue body accentuated by head and tail fins and is capable of walking on its hind legs. Despite its somewhat frog-like appearance, Swampert is strong enough to move boulders, and swims as fast as the best of ‘em! It has a powerful underwater vision, and its senses are keen enough to detect stormy weather, which it uses to safeguard its nests. Swampert has access to a Mega Evolution, in which it gains considerable bulk, giving it the look of a prize fighter. In this form, it fills its organs with air in order to give more power to its attacks. Swampert is also only weak to Grass-type Pokémon, making it even more of a force to be reckoned with.

  • Generation: Fourth
  • Pokédex: 445

Garchomp is a dual-type Dragon/Ground Pokémon that evolves from Gabite and is the final evolution of Gible. It is a blue draconian Pokémon that walks on its hind legs. Because it has horns and a snout, as well as a fin and tail, it is rather shark-like in appearance. Its body is also covered with horns, and it has functional wings that allow it to fly at incredible speeds. On top of its three evolutions, it also has access to a Mega Evolution, a temporary, more powerful form that allows it to grow in size, making its claws more akin to scythes, which bring even more pain to an opponent’s creature!

  • Generation: Fifth
  • Pokédex: 645

Landorus is a dual-type Ground/Flying Legendary Pokémon. It is unique in the fact that, while it doesn’t evolve from or into any other Pokémon, it does have another discreet form that changes its abilities and appearance. In its incarnate form, Landorus greatly resembles a Djinn, with muscular arms and a cloud-like lower body. In its other form, Therian, Landorus becomes a lean, orange, quadrupedal feline, with could-like paws and a tail. It is the leader of the group of Pokémon called the “Forces of Nature,” comprised of itself, Tornadus, and Thundurus, and is worshiped for its helpful nature in harvesting.

1. Groudon

  • Generation: Third
  • Pokédex: 383

Worthy of the number one spot, Groudon is a legendary Ground-type Pokémon that possesses the incredible ability to expand continents. Because of this, it has an ancient rivalry with Kyogre, a Pokémon with the ability to expand oceans, and whenever they meet they engage in ferocious battle. It is a massive bipedal red dinosaur covered with spikes and has blue stripes that glow when it is charging its power. As its status as a legendary Pokémon would imply, it is immensely powerful, capable of evaporating large amounts of water and causing volcanic eruptions. The mascot for Pokémon Ruby, it is the only one capable of learning Precipice Blade, which causes Ground damage to the target and adjacent Pokémon.

Reactions Around the Web

Yes, I knew it'd be an anime!
If it's saying that it's underway then I guess we'll get it next summer or fall season?
I can't be happy about the anime announcement... I just hope that they make something good. And pray that the third part of the story doesn't take a year to make.
I was hoping they'd be announcing a concert... Surely an anime is harder to make?
Wait, I thought they said it would be getting an anime when they first released the game?

Touken Ranbu: Hanamaru takes place in the year 2205, a time when Alternate Historicists are attacking the past in an attempt to change history. The Saniwa sage has a mission to protect that history and so has gathered the strongest type of Tsukumogami (inanimate objects inhabited by spirits) in the Inner Citadel: Touken Danshi (Sword Warriors). This is Hanamaru, the tale of these boys in a certain Citadel who sometimes smile, sometimes feel lost, but always live earnestly.
