What is Shounen? [Definition, Meaning]

As an avid anime watcher, it’s pretty obvious that no one needs to tell you about the different genres, especially if they try to tell you about shounen! If you are less of a romantic and prefer to just watch badass fights between strong characters, then this is the genre for you! Although typically not used in everyday lingo, the word “shounen” means “boy”. Thus, the genre shounen is one that is targeted at a younger male audience. Nonetheless, people who are in their late teen years and sometimes even in their 20s are very much into this genre. Although the genre itself originates back to the 90s before it became a big thing in the early to mid 2000s, there seems to be more and more manga and anime out there that are set in this genre! When immersing yourself in this genre, you never have to worry about running out of anime or manga: there will always be new ones!

[ad_top2 class="mt40"]

The Bread and Butter of Shounen

In any anime that’s classified as shounen, there’s always an underdog that’s cast as the protagonist. This character is always shunned by society for a characteristic that they possess which makes them “different”, and they are therefore seen as a possible threat that could change the entire system that most people are comfortable with. Essentially, the goal of these protagonists is to prove themselves to be worthy and to receive acknowledgment. Whether it’s for good or for evil depends entirely on the character, but typically, these guys end up on the good side and want to protect instead of destroy. What anime and manga in this genre attempt to teach us is that: no matter where you come from, if you work hard enough, you will get to where you need to be, and you will be happy. What makes this genre so popular isn’t just the fighting scenes and the brilliantly constructed villains, it’s also about the life lessons that are offered by each character, which is meant to teach us to have different perspectives and how that is a harbinger for success, no matter what life throws at you. A thoughtful notion, of course.

Fairy Tail

Fairy Tail wallpaper
[Information episodes=" 175 " aired=" October 2009 — March 2013 "]

An obvious example that has gone on the rise as a good shounen in the last couple of years is the Fairy Tail series by Mashima Hiro. Although the series focuses on different characters and their strengths and weaknesses, the main point of the story is the idea of growth and love. Although Natsu Dragneel, the protagonist, is not an obvious victim of being shunned by society, he possesses a characteristic that is considered rare — he is a Dragon Slayer. In the world of Magnolia, being a Dragon Slayer is incredible, due to the fact that those who have Dragon Slayer magic are those who are feared greatly. Essentially, this means that people who are classified as having this type of magic are those that were trained directly by powerful dragons, who, from the very start of the story, no longer exist. Natsu’s ultimate goal is to find Igneel, the dragon who raised him, but of course, there are a bunch of obstacles along the way.

Shounen heroes and protagonists all possess a trait that makes their story work, and that trait is perseverance. Although it is entirely natural and human to want to give up on trying, characters such as Naruto and Ichigo (Bleach) always get back up on their feet after they have fallen, stronger than ever before. Even a classic series like Inuyasha dictates the protagonist as one who will never give up, even if it might cost him his life. Not only are these characters incredibly tenacious, but they also care a great deal for their friends, and naturally, their support system is one that is strong! After immersing yourself in the shounen genre, you’ll feel somewhat motivated to do whatever it is you want to do, whether it’s to clean your bathroom aggressively, or whether it’s to do your homework before the deadline — it is entirely your call, but your motivation will go up by tenfold! Despite the serious overtones of shounen series as a whole, there’s bountiful heartwarming moments between characters, and of course, in order to spice things up, there is almost always a female love interest! Although the point of the story is not the romance, it usually ends with the protagonist winning over the heart of the girl he’s in love with, and it’s (usually) so satisfying, considering the fact that they’ve achieved all the things they needed in order to make them happy! There is also an endless stream of jokes and humour that keep you hooked and not easily bored with the action that is consistently on your screen! Of course, there are shounen in which romance isn’t necessarily a plot point, and a lot of the time, it’s more about changing a system of authority as opposed to small things such as romance. Attack on Titan is a perfect example of this, because even though there are hints of slight romances here and there, the main focus of the story is to solve a problem that the government has created, and to minimise casualties as they come to a solution. Larger predicaments are fixed before technicalities and formalities are confronted.

After You Take a Bite, Add Some Flavor!

Taking a glimpse into the shounen world, you’ll find that it’s not always about fighting and battles. While shounen technically aims at younger boys, there are also people of various ages that get sucked into the shounen world. For those who are slightly older than the targeted age, they need a little more than just the simple “I want to fight to be better” trope to stay interested. Mangakas have taken the liberty to begin making their stories more wholesome, with less plot holes and flaws. If a story becomes timeless, it means that the lessons that it teaches are ones that can be used at any time — and if that is the key to making a series a classic, mangakas need to consider problems of the world that are repetitive in history, in the present, and even for the future. A somewhat common predicament that presents itself in shounen anime and manga is the problem of authority: who is the government? What have they indoctrinated into their people? Who controls the government? Fullmetal Alchemist is one of the classic examples of a series that doesn’t merely focus on the protagonists’ personal catharsis. While the mangaka is aware that her characters are flawed, it is apparent that she doesn’t allow their weaknesses to be a catalyst for their downfall. Instead, she chooses to make them stronger by posing a bigger problem in their society, which is what drives them to utilise their flaws as a way to achieve a bigger goal that ultimately changes their world. Shounen isn’t always so hard-hitting, though! It is no secret that in the various anime genres, there’s always the supernatural genre that can be considered to be quite popular, and has thus gained some semblance of an audience. The interesting thing about supernatural-themed anime is that with genres like shoujo and slice-of-life, the supernatural thing can definitely work, and has been proven to pique the interest of audiences. The aspect of the supernatural world is that it’s not universal, and it is pretty much limited to the Japanese definition of supernatural, creating a sense of authenticity that instantly pulls you in and keeps you hooked.

Noragami wallpaper

When Japanese myths and folktales are in the mix with a shounen genre, it creates a whole new element of excitement for the audience. Not only is the protagonist facing a fatal flaw that could be their downfall, but there are supernatural aspects of their world that they need to fight off, too! A prime example of this is Noragami, in which the protagonist is a god, named Yato, that seeks to achieve his goal of being acknowledged by believers of the Shinto faith. The series is action-packed, filled with “sword” fights and endless battles between the good and the evil. This type of shounen is always interesting because the weight of the battles is lightened due to the immensely plot-driven aspects.

[ad_middle class="mt40 mb40"]

Comedy in Shounen

gintama wallpaper

Apart from the usual shounen trope with an underdog for a protagonist, there’s an additional aspect to consider: comedy. While all shounen series have an element of comedy present, there are some series that revolve around jokes and puns while simultaneously displaying the classic shounen characteristics. Gintama, for example, is an anime that is labeled as comedy, but it is also most certainly a shounen. When we are introduced to the series, we are merely being told what goes on in the world of Edo at a particular time in history. It is a little misleading to think that this is what Gintama is entirely about, because of course, the fact that the protagonist was a samurai that was stripped of his power ever since the freedom of the country was compromised is enough of an indication to tell you that there is a past. Gintama by itself is already an interesting series, and it’s characterised by its long but fruitful dialogue. More often than not, fans of this series are either snorting through their noses at how stupid some of the characters act, or trying very hard not to laugh too much because of how ridiculous some of the jokes and running gags are. An element of vulgarity is present that makes Gintama an irreplaceable series, even though there are other series out there that are just as vulgar. Another aspect of an anime like Gintama is the fact that it references other popular manga and anime, which is common in comedic series such as Danna ga Nani wo Itteiru Wakaranai Ken. Essentially, anime like these are ones that break the fourth wall between the characters and its audience, almost as though the writer is making a direct connection to his or her audience. Despite the many benefits of a shounen anime also being predominantly comedic, these types of anime usually have a fanbase of those who are in their early 20s to late 20s.

One Punch Man

One Punch Man 2
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" October 2015 — December 2015 "]

One Punch man is a relatively new shounen series and it possesses characteristics and qualities of a conventional shounen anime. Saitama, the protagonist, is a guy who merely wants to save the world with his own powers. He is not the typical underdog that we are used to seeing, but he is an underdog nonetheless. He is someone with pure intent on wanting to save the world, and so he trained his ass off in order to be someone that was worthy of saving people and being a hero. Of course, people that were higher up in the hierarchy did not acknowledge him or his strength merely because of his appearance, and as Saitama seeks to prove himself to the ones who said he wouldn’t succeed, he meets different friends along the way, one of whom is named Genos, a cyborg who looks up to him and recognises his hard work and perseverance. Saitama spent about three years training by himself in order to become infinitely stronger, and one of the defining features about him that most people notice at first glance is the fact that he’s bald, and how he lost his hair is one of the things about him that makes fans love him — he became bald because of all his hard work and training! Although the theme of the anime and series itself is somewhat “serious” in the sense that it’s pretty heavy on the notion of saving the world, the writer of the webcomic-turned-into-anime has taken the liberty to ensure that it is still entertaining as hell! There are bountiful badass fights, and as is usually present in shounen anime, a companion that admires the protagonist greatly. A lot of fans around the internet like to joke around that in a lot of shounen, the power of “nakama” is what drives characters to become stronger and fight harder for justice, or for their honor, or whatever it is that they intend to fight for. However, the notion of believing in your friends and possibly your family is one of the more intricate details of shounen, and the funny part is that it works. Generally, people don’t tend to get tired of the friendship trope, because it’s so common that it would be an outlier if it wasn’t comprised of these components. Having a protagonist with a fatal flaw and try to prove themselves to an audience of people that underestimate them is what shounen is all about — and One Punch Man surely delivers!

Conclusion

As you can see, there are so many different types of shounen anime, but they all have one thing in common: they all want to reach out to you and tell you their story, and hope that you can see their hard work being rewarded, in the hopes that it'll be a story that sticks with you! Whether it’s a classic shounen like Naruto or Fairy Tail, a shounen that is about changing the system, like Attack on Titan, or a comedic shounen that'll have you on the floor laughing like Gintama, surely you will be taught new life lessons. Many shounen fans don’t like to stick to just one sub-genre of shounen, as they say they like to expand the anime they watch so they don’t get bored. Truly, there’s a reason why shounen is one of the most popular genres: it’s because of how willingly writers want to reach out to their audience!

What to Do MCCS Okinawa Comic Con

Summary:

Over the past five or so years the military has been trying to bring a small piece of home to those soldiers serving overseas. Most of the time, MCCS provides free concerts and holiday festivals, but with the growing number of nerds in each generation and the rise of anime and video games in popularity, a good old fashion comic convention seemed like a good idea. Over the years, the convention has grown and grown. From starting out in a one room library it grew to the giant number of 10,000 guests while being held in one of the biggest field houses the base can offer. One of the greatest parts is that local Japanese are also encouraged to partake in the festivities in hopes of creating lasting bonds in the community.

MCCS Okinawa Comic Con -Basic Information-

Founding: 2011
When: October 17, 2015
Length: 1 day
Location: Camp Foster, Okinawa, Japan (in the Foster Fieldhouse)
Price: Completely Free
Hotels: Hotels are a bit of a problem when in the area. There aren’t that many and you would need to book in advance where convenient. Since the con is within the Okinawan military base, you will need to find transportation, but once you’re in, it shouldn’t be too hard to navigate to the fieldhouse location where MCCS Comic Con is held.

“MCCS offers an abundance of exciting activities with something for everyone, from athlete to artist, bowler to batter, adolescent to adult. Whether you are in to aerobics or aquatics, beaches or boating, family dining or evening entertainment, attending concerts or college, we have a program waiting for you. OUR MISSION: “MCCS Makes Okinawa Home” by providing a premium yet cost effective menu of Quality of Life programs and services designed to meet the needs of Marines and their families. What to Expect:

Please remember that this is a relatively new convention and so it is learning. Don’t expect many of the same activities such as panels and viewing rooms since the venue is relatively small and has no side rooms, but do expect to meet a lot of cool people, both military and Japanese, that are enthusiastic about the same things as everyone else attending. Expect a lot of cool Japanese guests showing off their work as well.

Cosplay 3 MCCS Okinawa Comic Con

What to Bring:

Yourself! Since this isn’t a multiple day affair or in a remote location, housing and overnight bags aren’t required. Bring a backpack, some snacks, and your wallet! If you’re cosplaying, of course bring all of your pieces as well as items needed for quick repairs.

What to Do:

Since resources are limited, the staff had to get creative with what they were given to work with. A corner of the field house was dedicated to competitive gaming of all sorts including TCG tournaments (Magic, Yu-Gi-Oh!, Pokemon) to video games (CoD, UFC, Smash Brothers). The other half of the field house contained vendors from around the island and included Japanese and Americans selling everything from Gunpla (Gundam plastic models) to video games and classic comic books. Outside the building were a number of different tents filled with food vendors selling yakisoba and various other Japanese festival food. The organizers also managed to snag some amazing guests as well. FUNimation voice actors Chris Sabat (Vegeta), Justin Cook (Man of 101 Voices), and Sean Schemmel (Goku), were on hand to do an autograph session and to screen the latest Dragonball Z movie. The line for these three circled the entire con! Japanese guests included Okina Kamino (Light Novelist), Yuji Kaida (Illustrator), Junichiro Tamamori (Mech Designer), Yuki Tedokon(Voice Actress), and Raito(Video Game Composer). Each of these amazing talents had their own booth where visitors could view each guests’ work. Tamamori had one of the most impressive booths since it contained blueprints to the original Yamato.

Cosplay:

The con wrapped up the evening with a cosplay contest featuring some amazing prizes including roundtrip airfare tickets (valued at $2,760 and sponsored by Delta Airlines) back to the states for those wishing to see some family. Much of the cosplay presented were extremely impressive considering many were first time competitors. I believe one of the contestant winners was dressed up as Chewbacca from Star Wars.

Cosplay 2 MCCS Okinawa Comic Con

Final Thoughts:

The small Marine based comic con has a long ways to go to compete with any of its stateside competitors, but for an organization unfamiliar with anime and other aspects of pop culture, they sure have a solid start. This year’s convention was experimental in many ways and the risks taken with the venue and guests really paid off. Next year there are even talks of extending the convention to a solid three days making it similar to a real convention from back in the states. I’m confident in saying that in the next five years, MCCS’ Comic Con will be the premier anime event in Okinawa that will bridge the culture gap between the American and Japanese cultures.

[Editorial Tuesday] A History of Japanese Anime on American Television

[ad_top1]

These days, a significant number of international anime fans around the world get their information through the Internet and that of course is a great thing. However, what about a time when there was no Internet to help non-Japanese fans discover anime? Of course, you could buy anime on VHS back in the day but they were rare and very expensive, and most rental stores carried hentai or other adult related material. But what other avenues were there to find anime? The late 1990s/early 2000s was a magical period for a good number of older American anime fans. During that time, Cartoon Network successfully pushed a new block known as Toonami. It had its ups and downs, but it was Toonami that helped bring anime and its identity to mainstream television. Even before the prime of Toonami, anime always had a presence on American television and today's Editorial Tuesday will be a history lesson of Japanese anime on US airwaves.

[ad_top2 class="mt40"]

The Beginning: Astro Boy and Gigantor

(Photo 1) A History of Japanese Anime on American Television

It is almost certain that most anime fans of all ages are aware of Tezuka Osamu’s (the granddaddy of Japanese manga AND anime) classic, Astro Boy, or Tetsuwan Atom in Japan. Shortly after the anime debuted in Japan in 1963, Astro Boy was picked up and aired by NBC studios. However, in order to adapt to western standards and appeal to American audiences, names and plot points needed to be changed. This practice of westernizing anime adaptations would actually be standard practice even to this day. Even though a large majority of international audiences are aware that Pokemon is Japanese in origin, it still maintains a practice of westernizing names and plot points to appeal to wider audiences, and certain original elements (such as how regions are named in the Japanese version to reflect Japan’s geography) wouldn't transition due to distinct cultural and society differences. Another popular post-World War II anime that successfully hit the US airwaves is Gigantor, or Tetsujin 28 in Japan, one of the original mech anime. Even though the original Japanese version takes place in modern times in context to its original broadcast in the 1960s, the American version took some significant creative liberties and made Gigantor take place in the year 2000!

Go Speed Racer, Go!

(Photo 2) A History of Japanese Anime on American Television

Probably the most famous 1960s anime of all time is Tatsunoko’s Mach Go Go Go, or most famously known as Speed Racer to international audiences, which has a reputation of its rather speedy and over dramatic dub (in addition to its iconic opening theme song). Due to the settings being distinctively non-Japanese and the material taking influence from international cinema (such as the Mach 5 being influenced by 007’s Aston Martin DB5), the transition for American audiences was rather easy. Other than the name changes, the dub masterfully matches the original Japanese dialog literally word for word, and is essentially true to the original Japanese in context to plot points.

The 1970s: Battle of the Planets

(Photo 3) A History of Japanese Anime on American Television

With the success of the previously shared titles, anime continued to sneak into American airwaves, but very few American audiences were aware of their Japanese origins. So what anime came to the US during the era of disco that still has a large impact to this day? For the older half of Generation X, it has to be Battle of the Planets, or Gatchaman, also made by Tatsunoko. Due to society differences and the values of an older time period, many key elements from the original source material were cut out. Naturally, with the violence and the transgender nature of its villain, a lot had to be changed in the programming aimed for American children, and its original content would have caused a moral panic. As a matter of fact, the name Battle of the Planets itself was meant to be a cash-in on the popularity of Star Wars, which debuted a year before the US broadcast of this respective hit anime. Although the original Gatchaman Japanese series was based on Earth, the American version somehow changed it to being about traveling to other (Earth-like) planets. Even though modern (and maybe younger) anime fans would be outraged by these changes, it didn't stop it from achieving numerous successes in being recognized as one of the best animated programs of all time from pop culture news sources, such as Wizard Magazine and IGN. Alex Ross, who many American comic fans like to say is the Norman Rockwell of his trade, happens to be a fan of this anime and even contributed art to DVD and VHS releases in the past.

The 1980s: Star Blazers, Robotech, Voltron

(Photo 8) A History of Japanese Anime on American Television

In the 1980s, in which many veteran fans claim to be the 'golden age of anime', more Americanized titles hit the airwaves, but were still subjected to censoring for American audiences. One of the first titles from this time period is Star Blazers (though it was first broadcasted in the 1970s in Japan it became famous as an 80s anime in America), or Space Battleship Yamato. Naturally, with the original Japanese name and the ship itself being a reference to a sunken World War II battleship, America couldn't present something controversial to domestic audiences so names had to be changed. What made Star Blazers distinct is that it was one of the first anime to be aired in the US, which had a serialized story as opposed to being episodic. Despite this format being new to American audiences, it was a success and paved way for anime of similar nature to come to the US. The biggest US broadcasted anime of the 1980s and to younger Generation X audiences is Robotech. This is probably one the oldest anime that has received any controversy for its censoring, and is still controversial towards its fans to this very day! Of course, one side are the purists, while the other side claims that at the time, these changes were necessary to help anime grow in the US. However, thanks to Harmony Gold and other legal issues, other series being released in the US has become a struggle. And the anime that is most fondly remembered by the Oregon Trail generation (the generation between Generation X and the millennials) is probably, Voltron, or originally known as, GoLion. The art style resonated with audiences, most especially with the Voltron mech itself, but most viewers were still not aware of its original Japanese origins, and that it had VERY graphic violence in its original Japanese broadcast. It had a unique story, exciting characters, and a very exciting soundtrack. But after watching GoLion and how dark and violent it is, it can be difficult to go back to Voltron despite loving it as a child. Still, most anime titles released in the US up to this point were not advertised as being from Japan and only just a decade later, would mainstream audiences get an idea of what anime is in its purest form.

The 1990s: The Beginning of the Awareness of Anime

(Photo 4) A History of Japanese Anime on American Television

As time progressed to the 1990s, many anime continued to hit the airwaves but with a new twist, audiences were finally given information that the hits at the time, such as Ronin Warriors and Sailor Moon, were originally from Japan. Despite this, changes were still made. Ronin Warriors was initially meant to be released under its original Japanese title, Samurai Troopers. Due to legal reasons (with Saban owning the rights to shows, such as Super Human Samurai Cyber Squad and VR Troopers), the title had to be changed to avoid any issues. In addition, character names were still changed but still kept a Japanese feel to it. It was one of the first anime on TV, despite all of its changes, which managed to keep its “Japanese-ness.” Then on September 11, 1995, (Wow! That's now over twenty years ago!) after being a huge hit in Asia, Europe, and South America, Sailor Moon finally hit American shores. Even though the character names and certain plot points were changed, Sailor Moon still gave American viewers a taste of school life in Japan with juken jigoku (examination hell), sailor uniforms and gakurans, Tokyo Tower, the swear drop trope, Japanese style bentos, big eyes, glittering nudity transformation scenes, crazy hair styles, and everything that virtually defines anime on a surface level. Plus, the theme song manages to capture most of the melody of the original Japanese version, and somehow make it appropriate for North American audiences. Despite Sailor Moon’s aggressive marketing campaign, it only managed to capture a cult audience and was on hiatus between 1996 and 1999. Shortly before the coming of Toonami, what also helped spread the awareness of anime during the 1990s was the Sci-Fi channel’s (now called SyFy) Saturday anime block. It aired some of the big titles from the 1970s like Galaxy Expresss 999, to the hits of its time such as, Tenchi Muyo! In Love. In addition, it also provided a gateway to other classics (Akira, Roujin Z and Robot Carnival). Unfortunately, this block only aired at 1am but effectively appealed to the building cult audience.

Pokemon The First Game Changer in Mainstreaming Anime in the US

(Photo 5) A History of Japanese Anime on American Television

Then in 1998, with Nintendo’s genius marketing, Pokemon finally hit US airwaves and became an instant and an on-going success. Despite its changes from the food (such as rice balls becoming jelly donuts in the US release), understanding its need for international appeal, many fans went with the changes and felt a sense of faithfulness to the nature of its source material. After Pokemon, other anime of similar nature for children followed such as Digimon and Yu-Gi-Oh! But it was not the anime that became a success, it was a franchise as a whole. Pokemon is not just anime, but of course games on Nintendo’s consoles and trading card game. This would also apply to other franchises such as Yu-gi-oh!, Digimon, and Megaman Battle Network (Rockman.exe in Japan). Plus, other anime based on legendary game franchise continued to be broadcasted on American TV such as Sonic X, but its dub became a long source of controversy, which is another topic in itself.

Toonami and The Mainstreaming of Anime

(Photo 6) A History of Japanese Anime on American Television

Between 1999 and 2000, Cartoon Network took advantage of the cult followings of Sailor Moon and Dragon Ball Z and brought further popularity through an aggressive marketing campaign of their rising Toonami block, which previously aired non-anime shows such as the new, Johnny Quest. Thanks to other Internet campaigns back in the day such as, Save Our Sailors, or SOS for short, with the exception of the Stars season, remaining episodes of Sailor Moon were broadcasted in English on Toonami. Despite some of the titles that would soon follow such as Gundam Wing, Outlaw Star and Tenchi Muyo being relatively old in Japan by five to ten years, they were fresh to American audiences and each found great success. Through Gundam Wing, Toonami started a midnight block broadcast where it would have an unedited broadcast that included more violence and swearing. Later, this practice would pave way for its Adult Swim block. What was also unique about Gundam Wing is that it was also one of the first anime that kept the original Japanese tracks of songs such as Just Communication as background music during its broadcast. It was the beginning of American audiences seeing anime for what it is, and not as a filter for Americanization.

Adult Swim: From Cowboy Bebop to Attack on Titan

(Photo 7) A History of Japanese Anime on American Television

In the early 2000s, thanks to building a mature audience through some of its anime titles, Cartoon Network started its Adult Swim block, which also includes original content and anime for its target audience. One of the most successful anime titles that helped build that brand is Cowboy Bebop, which many fans consider to be one of the best anime of all time. Cowboy Bebop (despite already having a strong popularity through the home video market) managed to expand its popularity through a TV broadcast and was repeatedly aired due to its high ratings and excellent reception. Later on, the success of the broadcast of mature oriented anime would allow the network to broadcast other critical hits such as Attack on Titan and Parasyte not too long after their Japanese broadcasts (despite those titles being aimed for teens in Japan). With a season 2 of Attack on Titan underway in Japan, Cartoon Network will soon follow and most likely air it. In addition, Adult Swim would also air anime influenced shows such as Afro Samurai and The Boondocks. Afro Samurai, based on a sleeper-hit manga by Okazaki Takashi, took years to get the anime version to launch. With its pilot/pitch trailer somehow managing to fall into the hands of Samuel L. Jackson, his influence resulted in getting the project off the ground, becoming an instant hit in America, while its popularity is still non-existent in Japan. Thanks to the fans and Cartoon Network Eventually, Cartoon Network became the TV haven for anime. Yes, there were network TV broadcasted anime after Toonami became a hit in 2000, but with some hit titles such as One Piece, the edits (and infamous rap opening) was subjected to very heavy negative criticisms from the established hardcore fan base and eventually got cancelled. According to dub actor Greg Ayers, he says that the Japanese executives approved the edits in order to get the show licensed and exposed to American audiences no matter what. However, some Japanese studios have openly criticized the editing process for western releases of Miyazaki Hayao films after the fiasco of the first dub of Naussica.

[ad_middle class="mt40"]

Overcoming Controversies

With different generations and different values, fans will naturally have conflicting opinions on whether or not anime should be westernized. Of course, anime is not without its purists and the purists have legitimate reasons for their views. Today, with the exception of titles aimed for children, such as Pokemon, changes are necessary but the franchise still resonates with audiences. Dragon Ball is distinct and unique because it is Japanese. To many fans around the world, it was their gateway to anime. However, some fans to this day still have feelings over westernizing anime for US broadcast. With more American audiences being aware of anime through other mediums such as No Doubt’s tribute to Kite, Kanye West’s tribute to Akira, Daft Punk’s Interatella 5555 album, The Simpsons’ tribute to Miyazaki, and South Park’s numerous spoof of Japanese animation, licensors need to give audience more credit and let the people see anime for what it is and embrace it.

To The Future

With most US households having some form of Internet connection, network sites such as Hulu, Netflix, and Crunchyroll are all the rage. Though Hulu and Netflix cater to non-anime audiences and carry many hit titles throughout the ages, Crunchyroll provides fans access to all the hit anime going on in Japan being uploaded 24 hours within its Japanese broadcast. Heck, Sailor Moon Crystal is broadcasted for free all over the world and this could pave way for other future original and/or retro titles. With Japanese studios becoming more aware of anime’s rising popularity, the probability of more anime like Sailor Moon Crystal being broadcasted internationally on the internet is the future for anime on TV. As of 2014 according to major news sources such as the Washington Post, due to FCC standards of demanding more educational content on network TV, anime no longer airs network TV let alone the age of Saturday morning cartoons. These standards were put in place in the 1990s and as a result, cable networks (not subjugated to FCC rules) started to pick up the slack and provide viewers channels such as Cartoon Network. With the world as it is today, there is also the Internet and legal streaming sites which in turn made network broadcasting for anime no longer necessary as a whole. TV still has a significant influence. Even when Tenchi Muyo! was broadcasted on Toonami, it was already a cult hit on VHS and its broadcast helped spread the audience. TV is still a powerful medium, even with the rise of the Internet. Though, Naruto was already big through the fansub scene, it only got bigger when it aired on TV. The only difference is that these days, audiences don't have to wait up to five years after its Japanese broadcast. Before most audiences knew what anime was, they already had exposure to it. With the young generation today, they have that awareness from the very beginning and can help them find more anime. While with some older folks, they just thought of Battle of the Planets and Robotech as generic cartoons but still something unique while not being unable to pinpoint why they were unique to begin with. .

What About Your Regions or Countries?

(Photo 9) A History of Japanese Anime on American Television

Anime has a special history all over the world. Before Dragon Ball Z and Sailor Moon were big in America, they were already popular in Europe and Asia. Saint Seiya was a huge hit in Latin America and Western Europe, but never managed to get a big audience on America. Voltes V is largely loved in the Philippines by many generations. If there are any non-Americans reading this, please share with other readers the history of anime on TV in your respective country. As we just shared, every country has a unique relationship with anime and it would be nice to read a first hand experience of it. So to all our readers around the world, please share a comment with your history of anime in your home nation. What changes were made to anime in your country?

Starting in 2008 and reaching its peak in recent years (2010 onwards), Noitamina is a programming block that airs late night on Fuji TV. Dedicated to the promotion of anime to the common masses, it had seen a steady increase in viewership over the years and gaining more awareness as well as garnering more attention from a broad age group of viewers rather than the always targeted young demographics. The coined name, Noitamina, is simply Animation spelt backwards because the creator wanted to revolutionize the showcasing of anime titles. In present times, Noitamina is known for showcasing high quality animes despite the programming block being placed late in the night (usually between the hours of 24:00 - 26:00). Today, we count the top 10 programmes that were aired by Noitamina and you, the readers will see for yourself the quality that Noitamina sets for its programmes. tokyo magnitude 8.0 dvd
[Information episodes=" 11 " aired=" Jul 2009 - Sep 2009 "]

This is a realistic scenario of the occurrence of a jishin (earthquake) in Japan. The setting for this story is based on a true hypothesis of what will become of Japan should an earthquake occur in the next few years or so. The series follows the Onozawa siblings - Mirai and her younger brother, Yuuki as they become separated from their parents during the earthquake and have to return home by foot. Along the way, the after effects of the earthquake can be seen with many suffering and struggling to live. The anime itself is a realistic representation of the hardships as well as the psychological effects of experiencing a precarious situation such an earthquake and that is the reason for its popularity - for it reminds us that anime is not just fun and games and that there are life lessons to be imparted as well.

9. Sakamichi no Apollon (Kids on the Slope)

Sakamichi no Apollon dvd
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" Apr 2012 - Jun 2012 "]

This is a story about how an Honours student, Nishimi Kaoru meets a delinquent, Kawabuchi Sentarou. Both have a passion for playing music. Together with the class president, Mukae Ritsuko, the trio embark on a musical journey into the world of jazz and Kaoru will finally see the world differently as he indulges in jazz music. This is a josei anime which is typically targeted at older women and is also an example of how Noitamina expands their horizon by broadcasting a whole array of anime titles that suits the general populace. The anime itself is well-received and the josei category is often enjoyed by older working women who only have time for television late at night. I would say that this is a smart move by Noitamina in attracting a specific group to its content and then exposing them to other genres that are similar.

8. Nodame Cantabile

nodame-cantabile
[Information episodes=" 23 " aired=" Jan 2007 - Jun 2007 "]

The music genre in anime is not that popular, but when there is outstanding title on the market, it leaves a lingering feeling of satisfaction. Nodame is a classic anime and a classic example of what a music anime should be - beautifully presented with a roster of lovable characters. Noda Megumi, an unorthodox pianist who simply do not follow the music sheets meets Shinichi Chiaki a technical pianist upholding the value of perfection and fulfils the heavy demands from the master composers of the past. What happens in the anime is a mismatch of style and personality but as they all say, 'opposites attract' which gives this anime its romance tag. Light hearted and heart warming, it is suited for all age groups and Noitamina made a good choice in picking this title for their programming.

7. Honey and Clover

[Information episodes=" 24 " aired=" Apr 2005 - Sep 2005 "]

This is a simple story about 3 young males: Yuta, Takumi and Shinobu. They live in a compact house and enjoy the small things in life. Life is well and they are contented but a fourth character is introduced - Hagumi, the talented and innocent girl. She is considered a prodigy and is admired by all. This simple tale is about to turn just a tad bit complicated as a love triangle forms between them. What will happen to their simple life and their simple tale? This is yet another hot favourite amongst anime fans and also a top show of its time. Noitamina does not feature sub-quality titles, and that is the reason for its exponential growth over the years. Honey and Clover is a classic anime and it is meant to be enjoyed just the way it is - a never changing original style that is much beloved.

6. Gin No Saji (Silver Spoon)

gin no saji dvd
[Information episodes=" 11 " aired=" Jul 2013 - Sep 2013 "]

You don't need an exaggerated presentation of action and super powers to leave viewers in awe. Gin No Saji is a simple tale of a young boy, Hachiken Yugo undergoing his education in agriculture. The story presents a brief overview of what it is like to be a student in the agriculture industry on a daily basis. The story is amazingly simple and down to earth and while it takes a while for the story to pick up, it is well worth the wait. It's simplicity is comparable to that of Barakamon (for those who have watched it) and it is due to this simplicity that allows viewers to inject their personal feels and touches into it which is why it is a beloved favourite amongst many, contributing further to the popularity of Noitamina. Gin No Saji is an anime that is simple but yet leaves you feeling utterly satisfied.

5. Shiki

Shiki dvd
[Information episodes=" 22 " aired=" Jul 2010 - Dec 2010 "]

Shiki is a unique blend of the horror genre and the psychological genre. It presents a comprehensive view into the supposed antagonists and their motives which is atypical of a horror anime. It is set in a small village with the villagers slowly turning against each other as they fight for their survival. It is an all out battle between vampires and humans with the vampires having ever-present human traits. The psychological factor comes in when the vampires start questioning the humankind. What defines humankind? By maintaining their sanity and having human traits, does it not qualify them to be humans? Shiki goes beyond the conventional horror setting by introducing a psychological element to it. It gives a fresh new perspective of the horror genre and many are still loyal to the series. This series appeals to a vast age group and Noitamina did good by featuring this series.

4. Psycho-Pass

Psycho-Pass dvd
[Information episodes=" 22 " aired=" Oct 2012 - Mar 2013 "]

"Fast paced action, compelling mysteries and plot twists that leave you in doubt, awe and craving for more". This is a description of the hit series of recent years - Psycho-Pass. In a somewhat dystopian future, the tendency for an individual to commit crime can be measured by the Sibyl System. This calculation is known as the Crime Coefficient and everybody is judged by the omnipotent Sibyl System. No system is perfect however and as the series progresses, the flaws of the system are exposed and the individuals who exploit these loopholes emerge from the shadows to cause anarchy. Psycho-Pass never leaves you bored and each episode makes you yearn for more as truths are unravelled and secrets are exposed. A dark anime by nature, the mystery and suspense it holds is what made it popular and convert viewers into diehard fans. A wise pick by Noitamina if I say so myself.

After the devastating loss of a friend, 5 childhood friends became estranged until they are visited from a ghost from the past. Will this driving force reconcile their friendship, or will it drive them further apart? AnoHana is an alluring tale about friendship, communicating the idea that even the strongest bond forged will not falter through the passage of time. A tearjerker and a masterpiece, it is undoubtedly one of the best original masterpiece of the anime industry. It is through these values that are depicted such that we are able to empathize and pour our own emotions into it which make certain series particularly poignant to us. AnoHana has reached the hearts of many viewers and certainly it does not take a layman to understand the mutual bond and understanding of friendship and that is why this is a good series to include in the Noitamina programme list.

2. Usagi Drop

Usagi Drop dvd
[Information episodes=" 11 " aired=" Jul 2011 - Sep 2011 "]

What does it take to raise a child? This moving series will show you the pains and effort that one will take to care for a child. Children after all, represent the innocence of humankind. When we age, we are tainted by the world and we often have bleak outlooks on our lives. Therefore the purity that children possess, reminds us of what we once used to be. While attending his grandfather's funeral, Daikichi realised that his grandfather had an illegitimate daughter. While others cast their eyes down upon her for fear of the obligation and responsibility that she will bring, Daikichi did the unthinkable as a bachelor - he decides to adopt her as his own and is putting his all into raising her. It is no easy feat, for both of them as they proceed through the trials and tribulations of their respective lives. Usagi Drop was adapted from a highly acclaimed manga. The animators did not put forward a shoddy animation and the series remains a popular favourite today even though this is a dated anime. It is a truly moving masterpiece of the current generation of anime being only second to the next masterpiece and the final one for our countdown.

1. Shigatsu Wa Kimi no Uso (The Lie you told in April)

shigatsu wa kimi no uso dvd
[Information episodes=" 22 " aired=" Oct 2014 - Mar 2015 "]

"Music not only transcends the spoken language, it transcends all boundaries of human emotion." Shigatsu is perhaps one of the most beautifully crafted masterpiece of 2015 if not, for the past decade in fact. This anime combines stunning visuals, music that complements the emotions and feel of the show and outstanding character development in one whole package. This anime truly gives meaning to the phrase "music is the universal language of mankind" because more often or not, it is the script which makes you understand the character, but the music is what makes you empathize and feel with them. Piano prodigy Arima Kousei has lost his touch with the piano after his mother died. This was not to be and he was fated to meet the violinist, Kaori Miyazono, whom revitalizes his piano career and brought the brilliance of music back to his world. To him, she is not only his guide and mentor; Kaori is Kousei's whole world. I will note that not only has it made it to the top of this list, but it also topped the charts even till date and I highly, highly recommend it to anyone who has yet to watch it. Noitamina did not cause a gross injustice to the anime world by featuring this anime on their programming block for this anime prove that masterpieces can still be created and classic animes are not a thing of the past. There will always be a new anime to revolutionize the industry again.

Hans Humpty Preview (No Spoilers)

When the Demon God awakens, six heroes chosen by the Goddess of Fate must fight and defeat him to save the world. The heroes are chosen when a flower shaped crest appears somewhere on their body. When the chosen ones all finally meet, however, they have reason to believe one of them is an impostor and likely, a traitor. Suspicious and paranoid, the heroes all face intense battles.

Hans Humpty Bio

Seiyu: Kenichi Suzumura

Before being chosen as one of the six heroes, Hans was an assassin for hire, and a very skilled one at that. He is one of the least known of the heroes, exactly for that reason. As Hans mentions himself, being popular wouldn’t be very convenient as an assassin! He is also one of the strongest heroes. His quick cat-like wit, stealth and approach to fighting have served him well in his mysterious but successful past as well as in his current post as one of the chosen heroes.

Hans Humpty Character Highlights (There will be Spoilers from here on)

1. He’s Mysterious

1-He's-mysterious-Hans-Humpty

Nobody really knows much about Hans. All anybody knows is that he is an assassin for hire and most only know it because he shared it voluntarily. However, he never gives out any other information about himself other than how he developed his fighting style based on cats’ movements and the fact that he doesn't lie.You rarely ever see his eyes and his smile always seems to be hiding something. Always asking the questions, sneaking around or just watching things unfold, Hans will never give himself away. When Hans and Adlet are out scouting, Adlet says he's never heard of him and Hans replies that if he did know about him, it'd be bad for him. Later, when all the heroes tell their stories, Hans begins by saying: “I'm from... well, that doesn't really matter...”. He later mentions that he “lives in darkness” making him even more mysterious. What could he mean?

2. He Looks and Acts Like a Cat!

2 He looks and acts like a cat Hans Humpty

I mean really, one can’t have a cat-boy crush and not bring up the cat look! Hans has messy black hair that resembles lowered cat-ears which covers his feline golden/yellow eyes most of the time. And of course, no cat-boy would be complete without a tail! He also has finger nails like claws and a wide, mischievous cat-like smile (complete with fangs!) that you just can’t resist, and he wears it often. His tattered and patched up clothes really showcase Hans' laid back nature which just adds to his cattitude. he also tends to crouch, sit on the ground or sit on top of things when he’s not lying on his side like a resting cat or slinking around just like a feline would. Add to this a “nya!” before and after a few sentences and you can see why Chamo refers to him as “Neko-san”!

3. His Cat's Blade Fighting Style

3 His Cats Blade fighting style Hans Humpty

Of course, Hans’ catness isn’t just skin deep. The reason why he resembles a cat so much in appearance, speech and demeanor is because has developed his fighting style, Cat’s Blade, based on the way cats move. This gives Hans quite the advantage when fighting any type of enemy, not to mention he puts up a really good fight against and even defeats the only hero stronger than him, Chamo. While he does fight using two large blade knives, he moves around unpredictably and quickly like a cat, jumping around and evading attacks while dealing slashes to his opponents. He’s not only fast an unorthodox in his way of fighting; he is also silent and has the reflexes of a true feline hunter. In one battle, after being blinded by a gas bomb, he fights incredibly accurately, with his eyes closed! You do not want to be this cat's prey!

4. He’s More than Just Strong

4 He's more than just strong Hans Humpty

Hans goes beyond his amazing cat-like abilities as a killing machine. He is also extremely smart. He is quick to analyze situations and figure out the best way to take advantage of them or find a solution if the situation puts him in danger. He is considered to be one of both the strongest and smartest of the heroes. Which he proves by playing mind games with Adlet, predicting the other heroes' actions, and constantly putting pieces of the puzzle together. Hans is the first one to absolve Fremy and the first one to point the finger at Adlet as the fake after hearing everyone’s stories based on his knowledge, experiences and observations. He also uses his wit to figure out if Adlet is telling the truth by making him hallucinate that he's being murdered and seeing in his face whether he's innocent or not. A little sadistic, but very clever, nonetheless. Eventually he's the one that figures out who the fake is.

5. He’s Really a Nice Guy

5-He's-really-a-nice-guy-Hans-Humpty

Something that stands out about Hans, is that while he is portrayed in a way that makes you instinctively distrust him, he soon proves to be a pretty sweet guy. When suspicion goes around the group, he doesn’t just try to prove his innocence, he eventually also sides with Adlet to prove his innocence too and even fights alongside him against Chamo. Hans first shows his sweet side when he has proof that Adlet is not the fake. Shaking his hand, saying they're now partners and even feeling bad about not speaking out about things that would've lifted suspicion from Adlet. And when Adlet insists on going after Fremy, Hans is truly concerned about him and tries to persuade him not to go. Later, he sticks by Adlet and helps clear his name by helping expose the fake when Adlet's on the brink of death and still being targeted by the rest of the group. He's a partner you can count on for sure!

As you see, Hans Humpty is more than just another meowing cat-character. Synopsis

Kanie Seiya, a smart and extremely narcissistic high school student, believes that the beautiful but reserved Sento Isuzu has invited him on a date at an amusement park called Amagi Brilliant Park. Much to his chagrin, not only is the location a run-down facility, the supposed date is merely a recruitment tour where Sento and Princess Latifa Fleuranza, the owner of the theme park, ask him to become the park's new manager. Their cause for desperation? As stipulated in a land-use contract, Amagi has less than three months to meet a quota of 500,000 guests, or the park will be closed for good and the land redeveloped by a greedy real-estate company. Seiya is won over by the revelation that Amagi is no ordinary amusement park; many of its employees are Maple Landers—mysterious magical beings who live in the human world and are nourished by the energy created by people having fun. Entrusted with the hopes and dreams of this far-off enchanted land, Seiya must now use his many skills to bring Amagi back on its feet, or watch it crumble before his eyes. (Source: MAL)

Kirii's burden and his search for the "Net Terminal Genes" is a goal like no other and is very much the mystery of this story. utawarerumono itsuwari no kamen DVD

Utawarerumono: Itsuwari no Kamen is part of the enticing autumn anime line up currently airing in Japan and available through a number of simulcast services for viewers outside the home of anime. This is technically the second release in the Utawarerumono series however new viewers need not be hesitant as it bares minimal resemblance and references beyond minor cameos and fan service winks to existing franchise patrons. Utawaremono is in fact derived from a series of eroge PC dating sims but thankfully none of the clichéd writing or reliance on hentai or ecchi alone is prevalent in this excellent autumn anime. Utawarerumono begins with an unnamed protagonist (Haku) awakening alone, confused and exhausted on a snowy mountain with no knowledge of how he came to be there. Cue giant centipede like Gigiri monster chase scene and eventual rescuing from a beautiful and talented half female with cute cat ears and tales named Kuon. While stereotypical fantasy RPG fair on initial viewing, Utawarerumono boasts an excellent cast, interesting and steadily developed fantasy world and a unique male lead in the form of Haku. Far from the typical hero, Haku is lazy, easygoing and not much of a fighter. It is his ability to bring out the best in others and his new found guardian Kuon that makes Haku’s story integral to those around him. Utawarerumono doesn’t feature a heavy reliance on action and fighting, instead it chronicles the characters journey and finding their place in the bustling workplace and economy of this strange world. If you enjoy fantasy anime with an emphasis on comedy, fun and with a dusting of ecchi and action then here are another 6 anime we recommend that are just like Utawarerumono.

1. Ookami to Koushinryou (Spice and Wolf)

Ookami to Koushinryou dvd
[Information episodes=" 13 " aired=" Jan 2008 - May 2008 "]

Holo is a powerful wolf deity who is celebrated and revered in the small town of Pasloe for blessing the annual harvest. Yet as years go by and the villagers become more self-sufficient, Holo, who stylizes herself as the "Wise Wolf of Yoitsu," has been reduced to a mere folk tale. When a traveling merchant named Kraft Lawrence stops at Pasloe, Holo offers to become his business partner if he eventually takes her to her northern home of Yoitsu. The savvy trader recognizes Holo's unusual ability to evaluate a person's character and accepts her proposition. Now in the possession of both sharp business skills and a charismatic negotiator, Lawrence inches closer to his goal of opening his own shop. However, as Lawrence travels the countryside with Holo in search of economic opportunities, he begins to realize that his aspirations are slowly morphing into something unexpected. Spice and Wolf shares a number of similarities to Utawarerumono. Firstly, both anime feature a human animal hybrid female lead character, as Kuon in Utawarerumono is half cat and half human female. They also both recount the journey of a male and female pair of companions that begin in a rural countryside village and subsequently travel to a major capital in search of work and economic gain. Simliarly to Krafts partial dependence on Holo, Haku needs the assistance of Kuon on many occasions. However eventually Haku’s own set of unique abilities lead to trade and work opportunities for the pair. If the dynamic relationship between Kuon and Haku was your favourite part of Utawarerumono, Spice and Wolf is a great choice for your next anime.

This could possibly mean great misfortune, not only for the Imperial family, but for the entire world as well. Court advisers only see one solution. Chagum must be put to death by his own father's hand. His salvation is in the form of Balsa, a spear woman and mercenary from Kanbal, the kingdom across the mountains. Her skills are legendary, and although reluctant, she is held by a mysterious vow to save eight souls before she dies. Can she fend off an entire empire and make Chagum her eighth soul? Moribito shares the theme of a strong female lead character in the case of Balsa that becomes the guardian and protector to a male character in peril. Utawarerumono and Moribito also shares a historical fantasy setting that has many hints of classical Japanese and oriental aesthetic. Characters in both animes wear traditional clothing aswell as building design and references to onsen (hot bath) and sake (alcohol) culture. Both anime series feature a large and well rounded cast, with few characters lacking in development and sufficient depth. If you enjoyed the historical fantasy of Utawarerumono, then Moribito is the anime for you.

Separated from Keiki, Youko and her friends must do whatever they can if they wish to survive in this new world. 12 Kingdoms shares a fantastical world with a basis in east Asian history and mythology. Many of the creatures referenced and customs seen pay tribute to the Chinese and Asian heritage much like the world of Utawarerumono. 12 Kingdoms also features a strong female protagonist in Youko that is capable of battling and protecting her friends both through her courage but also her intelligence much like Kuon. Both 12 Kingdoms and Utawrerumono feature plots that give a detailed depiction of the ruling of a kingdom and the economic effects this has on not only its own populace but on the rest of the world. If you enjoyed the kingdom world building of Utawarerumono then 12 Kingdoms will take you to another world.

4. Arslan Senki (The Heroic Legend of Arslan)

Arslan Senki dvd
[Information episodes=" 25 " aired=" Apr 2015 - Sep 2015 "]

Arslan Senki is a revival of a 1990’s OVA series based in a historical fantasy world, loosely drawing from Middle Eastern and Christian/Templar period history. In the prosperous kingdom of Pars lies the Royal Capital of Ecbatana, a city of splendor and wonder, ruled by the undefeated and fearsome King Andragoras. Arslan is the young and curious prince of Pars who, despite his best efforts, doesn't seem to have what it takes to be a proper king like his father. At the age of 14, Arslan goes to his first battle and loses everything as the blood-soaked mist of war gives way to scorching flames, bringing him to face the demise of his once glorious kingdom. However, it is Arslan's destiny to be a ruler, and despite the trials that face him, he must now embark on a journey to reclaim his fallen kingdom. Arslan Senki, much like Utawarerumono features a well developed fantasy world that is grounded in references to real period history, customs and battle. A primary theme throughout Arslan is the focus on the right to rule as a king and what makes an individual worthy of the responsibility. In Utawareurmono, the mythical and seemingly eternal emperor and his interest in Haku will be a running theme throughout the anime’s current arc. It is heavily hinted that he or his closest companions will have a large part to play in the future ruling of the kingdom, much like young Arslan and his multiple antagonists and rivals to the throne. As a main character, Arslan shares a number of similarities to Haku, primarily in his lack of physical ability and his reliance on his companions during battle. Arslan, much like Haku instead relies on his ability to charm and win the hearts of specialists in many different areas. So if you enjoyed the theme of historical kingdoms with a journey to change the ruling status qou, Arlsan will help scratch that itch.

5. Log Horizon

Log Horizon dvd
[Information episodes=" 25 " aired=" Oct 2013 - Mar 2014 "]

By its eleventh expansion pack, the massively multi-player online role-playing game Elder Tale has become a global success, having a following of millions of players. However, during the release of its twelfth expansion pack: Novasphere Pioneers, thirty thousand Japanese gamers who are all logged on at the time of the update, suddenly find themselves transported inside the game world and donning their in-game avatars. In the midst of the event, a socially awkward gamer called Shiroe along with his friends Naotsugu and Akatsuki decide to team up so that they may face this world which has now become their reality along with the challenges which lie ahead. While initially, Log Horizon seems to have more in common with Sword Art Online than with Utawarerumono, once you pass the initial exposition, the rich fantasy world is something fans of the latter anime will certainly find appealing. Log Horizon features a well crafted and detailed fantasy world that feels like a living, breathing ecosystem of people and fantastical creatures working side by side towards common goals. Log Horizon is not heavily action orientated and instead focuses on the relationships of its characters and in their need to survive economically in this new life much like Kuon and Haku spend their time. Protagonist Shiroe is not a fighter or especially skilled but he does possess a strong intellect that enables him to develop new ideas for the group that benefits them all. This is much like Haku using his ability to learn and study to benefit the group in an economic sense rather than in a physical hero type role. If you enjoyed the focus on world building and daily living to survive from Utawarerumono, then we recommend losing yourself in the virtual world of Log Horizon.

After a long and treacherous journey, our Hero finally arrives at the Dark Lady's castle only to find himself being asked for help. The Hero explains how the war that the demons have brought upon the humans have killed thousands and put more in misery. The queen of demons however argues that this war has made the human society band together as one and showed empirical evidence how it has increased population, increased production, boosted economy and improved society overall. Furthermore, she explains to the Hero that ending this war will result in a civil war that will produce more bloodshed than there ever was. The Hero, convinced that the only way to bring peace, relatively speaking, is to join forces with the Dark Lady, agrees to help with her plans! Maoyuu features an intriguing fantasy world mixing the believable with the mystical. The main character Yuusha (Hero) is a human in this fantasy world whereas his female foil and partner is a non-human magical being much like Kuon in Utawarerumono. The emphasis in Maoyuu is not on constant action like many of the anime’s contained in this list, but planning, strategy and daily economic life of its people. The Hero and Dark Lady are unlikely lovers but Maoyuu makes there interaction and romance feel genuine rather than forced in for the excuse of ecchi alone. There are moments of fan service, in particular the camera pays a lot of focus on Dark Ladies breasts, however her character is well developed and rounded enough that this plays into the viewer feeling the same desire as the Hero. This is very similar to Kuons role in Utawarerumono, she is frequently naked as she has a penchant for hot baths, however it never feels overly sexualised. They are both female characters that are comfortable with their sexualities and are more empowered and desirable as a result. If you enjoyed the cross species romance from Utawarerumono then Maoyuu will give you an equally relatable love story.

Yuru Yuri San☆Hai! dvd

It’s that time again, and after some fun filled summer OVAs (See: Yuru Yuri Nachuyachumi!) the girls from Yuru Yuri have once again returned to grace our screens. New series can be exciting but sometimes it’s nice to curl up in the warm arms of a familiar slice-of-life sequel, and that’s just what you can expect from Yuru Yuri. Yui remains surprisingly sane and Chinatsu is, as ever, head-over-heels for her, Kyouko is still a massive troll and if anyone has seen Akari they should probably tell her the new season has started. But as the saying goes “You can never have too much good slice-of-life anime”, or something along those lines. So despite Yuru Yuri’s moe magnificence, you might soon find yourself wanting more. With that in mind, we’ve put together a list of shows that are bound to keep you entertained in the long, cold nights between Yuru Yuri’s episode releases.

1. Love Lab

Love Lab dvd
[Information episodes=" 13 " aired=" July 5th 2013 - September 28th 2013 "]

With her boyish looks and laid back attitude, Riko Kuruhashi is considered the wild, rebel of Fujisaki Girls Academy, but the popularity this brings her doesn’t hold a candle to that of flawless student council president Natsuo Maki. With such different personalities, it would take something pretty big to bring the two together, for example, seeing said president kissing her pillow in the student council room. To ensure her secret is kept from the world, Maki ropes Riko into joining the student council in addition to her newly devised “Love Lab”, where she plans for the two of them to practice everything from holding hands, to doing strange things to pillows. Love Lab has the same silly humour and yuri elements as seen in Yuru Yuri, only with a lot more crazy. Maki has a habit of taking otherwise normal situations, most of which involve drinking tea in the student council office, and making them downright bizarre. Despite the main casts of the shows having fairly different personalities, the two share very similar themes and atmospheres, no doubt helped by their all-female casts and school settings. Love Lab is great if you’re after some laid back fun, but want something a bit more up-beat than the gentler ride of Yuru Yuri.

2. Gochuumon wa Usagi Desu ka? (Is the Order a Rabbit?)

Gochuumon wa Usagi Desu ka dvd
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" April 10th 2014 - June 26th 2014 "]

Welcome to the Rabbit House Café, where there’s delicious coffee, a variety of teas, and cute waitresses. After moving to the café for a homestay, Cocoa quickly takes up her role as new waitress and owner’s daughter Chino’s big sister, though Chino would have something to say about that. Along with Rize, another part-time waitress, and their friends Sharo and Chiya from nearby café’s, follow the girls as they go about their daily business, from serving customers to visiting hot springs. One of the big charm points of both Yuru Yuri and Gochuumon wa Usagi Desu ka is the moe, round faced character designs and cute clothes to match, making both series very pleasant to watch. Both have a strong focus on silly, slapstick humour along with their comedy duos, in the form of Yui and Kyouko, and Chino and Cocoa. On top of that, although not quite as obsessive as Chinatsu, Sharo’s girlish adoration of Rize is heart-warmingly adorable to watch. With the next series of Gochuumon airing this season, now is the perfect time to give it a shot.

3. Yuyushiki

Yuyushiki dvd
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" April 10th 2013 - June 26th 2013 "]

Moving up to high school can be a pretty scary experience, but having some good friends by your side sure makes it a whole lot easier, even if they are particularly skilled at driving you up the wall. After starting high school Yui, Yuzuko and Yukari decide to join the Data Processing Club, which seems to mostly involve googling different animals and poking fun at their teacher, “Mom Sensei”. As with any school girl slice-of-life anime you can expect a lot of hanging around the club room, mind-blowingly silly puns and, much to Yui’s displeasure, a bit of yuri fan service. Both Yuyushiki and Yuru Yuri have us following a seemingly ordinary protagonist, and she tries to deal with the somewhat strange friends that surround her. Yui’s character in Yuyushiki bears a striking resemblance to Yuru Yuri’s, Yui, in terms of personality, being the sensible and mature, but adorable when embarrassed. To add to that Yuzuko and Yukari are like Yuru Yuri’s Kyouko split into two people, one clever, one ditzy, and both lovable yet relentlessly annoying. Despite its much smaller cast, if you enjoyed Yuru Yuri, it’s hard to go wrong with Yuyushiki.

4. Sakura Trick

Sakura Trick dvd
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" January 10th 2014 - March 28th 2014 "]

Wanting to have more good memories of high school isn’t unusual, but when Haruka and Yuu decide that sharing a kiss is the best way to do it, things get understandably more complicated. Sakura Trick centers around six high school girls and their relationships, ranging from best friends to something much more intimate. With everything from nosy older sisters to their own confusion getting in the way, the series is filled with an abundance of both hilarious and awkward situations. Sakura Trick is something recommended to those who want a true yuri anime, rather than the light-hearted joking between friends seen in Yuru Yuri. Both share a very silly sense of humour, with much of the show focused on the whimsical daily lives of the cast, and so make for a very relaxing watch. If you want to see what real yuri looks like along with a bit of silly humour, Sakura Trick is definitely worth a watch.

5. Azumanga Daioh

Azumanga Daioh dvd
[Information episodes=" 26 " aired=" April 9th 2002 - October 1st 2002 "]

Azumanga Daioh follows the daily lives of a group of high school girls, each with their own quirks, as they proceed to do fairly ordinary high school things. Like all slice-of-life anime though, despite it’s simple premise, Azumanga Daioh brings a lot of laughs, as the girls somehow make the ordinary into the extraordinary on a regular basis. With a varied cast, from grade skipping, child prodigy Chiyo, to tall, dark and unusually quiet cat lover Sakaki, Azumanga has its good share of stories to tell. Despite its lacking in the yuri department, Azumanga Daioh shares a very similar premise to Yuru Yuri, if with slightly more eccentric humour. Both having such a large cast, there’s a variety in the characters and situations which makes every episode feel fresh and each joke as funny as the last. Despite its age, as a purely slice-of-life comedy anime, still really shines so if you went to Yuru Yuri for the laughs the Azumanga is a great pick up.

6. K-On!

K-On! dvd
[Information episodes=" 13 " aired=" April 3rd 2009 - June 26th 2009 "]

Hoping that her castanet abilities are up to par, high school freshman Yui Hirasawa, decides to join the school’s light music club, only to find that they were really hoping that she could be their lead guitarist. Thankfully other members Mio, Tsumugi and Ritsu are there to lend a hand as Yui tackles the task of getting her guitar skills up to a reasonable level before the club’s first concert. An inevitable candidate for any slice-of-life related list, despite K-On’s yuri only existing inside Mugi’s head, it’s the show’s laid back, easy going nature that make it and Yuru Yuri feel so alike. The two share a very similar comedy style, with the characters constantly playing off each other, along with the Manzai (straight man & funny man) style used by Yui and Kyouko, and Ritsu and Mio. If you enjoyed Yuru Yuri but somehow managed to avoid watching K-On, now would be a good time to start.

Series like Yuru Yuri can make the difference between ending the day on a high or a low. Whilst they may not be as heavy on plot or character development as some more serious shows, they certainly know how to put a smile on a person’s face. For that reason, having more than just the one episode of Yuru Yuri a week can hardly be a bad thing. This is the age of moe, where cute girls are everything and not a season goes by without at least one new slice-of-life series to enjoy. With such an abundance of it about, these are but a few of the awesome shows out there that are similar to Yuru Yuri. So what shows will you be watching? Or better yet, let us know your suggestions.

Fairy Tail would be easy to make because there are lots of characters, and alliances are clearly divided by guilds.
If this was asked a long time ago, it would've been Inuyasha for sure
I also wanted a PreCure Musou, but I didn't expect it to be first place
