This anime list is brought to you by the Honey’s Anime staff. We have combed over countless names to bring you this list. Please enjoy it and laugh! Note: This is not a hate list. This is a list of names that are ridiculous beyond reason and would not, and for the most part, could not exist in reality. We know that anime characters sometimes are given… unique names. When we look at various anime there are names that are usually Japanese, because anime is, shocker, made in Japan. Others, however, look like the dictionary or a word randomizer has vomited everywhere. Better yet, not a word randomizer, but someone or something opened up a dictionary and was like “This one. This word right here is going to be a perfect name!” Much to the bane of translators around the world, Japanese people love names that do not resemble their own. Want to make them super special? Put them in katakana, the Japanese alphabet for foreign words and sounds, and suddenly EVERYONE loves it. Why? Because it sounds foreign and exotic to them. Japan is known for not speaking much beyond Japanese, and even then, everyone alike complains about how hard it is to speak their own language. So, with a natural aversion to their own, it’s no surprise that they generally are unable to even speak a few words of any foreign language, including English. This is not always true, but for the most part, it is! That aside, what are some stupid names? Well, let’s peek at a few before we get into it. Arguably someone was being lazy when they named the mailman in Sugar Sugar Rune “Magical World Mail Order Man.” Yes, that is his official name. From the popular series Naruto, “Naruto” is a type of kamaboko and kamaboko means “steamed seasoned fish paste”. One more one to make you laugh is Jacuzzi Splot from Baccano! What were they originally going for? Jacuzzi Spot? Jacuzzi Slut? Jacuzzi Inkblot? Who knows… Either way, it’s pretty funny when you think about it. Let’s look at the top 10 stupid names that we have found and compiled for you! What’s in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet. – William Shakespeare

10. L Lawliet (Death Note)

[2_images_in_row character='L Lawliet' anime='Death Note dvd']
[sourceLink asin="B015GKSXAC" asin_jp="" text="" url="" ]

Death note brought us a new sort of series when it came around in 2006. Light suddenly one day has a journal fall into his hands that, if he writes the name of the person whom he wants to die, they die in whatever manner he describes. L or L Lawliet comes in to try and crack whomever Kira is and bring him to justice. Thus an epic adventure begins. L… well we never really know what the L stands for. It could come from the moniker that he adopts called Hideki Ryuuga but the reality is is that Ryuuga starts with an R, not an L. This could be though that in Japanese there is no distinct “L” sound in Japanese but more of an R/L hybrid sound. Lawliet, on the other hand, is supposed to be pronounced as "low light"… yeah… we are just going to leave that one there. Clearly, the creator was wanting to make something to be the opposite of Raito and be Low Light but why not Row Right? It makes no sense. Either way, this is not a name you would ever hear in everyday life, and if anyone was shown this without prior knowledge, they would probably just say “Lahw lee-et” and not “low light”. Verdict: Good job Tsugumi Ohba. You kinda tried?

9. Schneizel el Britannia (Code Geass: Hangyaku no Lelouch)

[2_images_in_row character='Schneizel el Britannia Code Geass Hangyaku no Lelouch' anime='code geass Lelouch of Rebellion dvd']
[sourceLink asin="B01IPEG91Q" asin_jp="" text="" url="" ]

Code Geass was another Shounen/Seinen anime that a lot of the community has seen. Schneizel came to us when he was presented as an amazing strategist in season 1 on par with Lelouch. In season 2, he is the main antagonist. Of season 2 and is shown as being cool and calculated. What was not calculated though was that name. We won’t even get into how the last name “el Britannia”. The Britannia, is not even a real name or word for that matter. Schneizel on the other hand, is a goldmine. One does not have to study very hard in order to know some very basic German. English does come from German after all. Most likely what the creator was going for and horribly missed was some sort of German sounding name or word. What they are close to is Schnitzel. Schnitzel is meat that has been pounded with a meat tenderizer, coated with flour, eggs, and breadcrumbs, and then fried. In Germany is it commonly made with pork which leads to it being a dick joke. Much like how Schneizel tended to act in the series. Have we made you laugh yet? There is more coming. Verdict: You kinda tried Gorou Taniguchi. Thanks for playing. It ain’t what they call you, it’s what you answer to.- W.C. Fields

8. Nice Holystone (Baccano!)

[2_images_in_row character='Nice Holystone Baccano!' anime='Baccano dvd']
[sourceLink asin="B001K98M6O" asin_jp="" text="" url="" ]

No, this is not Final Fantasy, and no, no one is about to learn a new spell called Holy via a stone or leveling up. Nice Holystone was actually someone who was introduced in Baccano! In the series, Nice is a fairly mellow individual who loves making explosives. She does not have a right eye due to an accident and she has tons of scares to due to her experiments. Nice and good ole Jacuzzi are the standard childhood friends. They did not even try here. Maybe you could relate stone to her calm disposition, but that's about where it stops. This name is simply an amalgamation of words and sounds slammed together to make a “name”. The equivalent is when people take names for themselves without knowing if it is a real name or not. “Nice” does not sound like anything in Japanese while “Holy” could maybe be close to “Holly” but even then that is a stretch. This name sounds like what someone who is a gem collector and walks into a shop and exclaims, “nice holystone!” while then trying to haggle down the price to purchase it on their own. Verdict: No Ryohgo Narita, you did not even try here. This is a dictionary scramble, through and through.

7. Aaroniero Arruruerie (Bleach)

[2_images_in_row character='Aaroniero Arruruerie Bleach' anime='bleach memories of nobody dvd']
[sourceLink asin="B009PPFMPY" asin_jp="" text="" url="" ]

In the newest episode of “What did you just call my sister?”, Aaroniero Arruruerie is Espada #09 from Bleach. Bleach sports well over 200 characters and this is the effect. Unfortunately, you get a bunch of sounds slammed together and boom a name is born. Now Aaroniero is supposed to be based on the name of Eero Aarnio, who is a Finnish interior designer. That part is easy to see. Reverse the name of Eero Aarnio and you get something that sounds like Aaroniero. That is fine. What is not so fine is where Arruruerie comes from. One could surmise that it was an attempt to make a French sounding name. (Again with the taking of names when you do not know where it comes from nor if it is a real word) Japanese people have an obsession with France. So much so, that when they go and find out that France is nothing like they think it is, they become diagnosed with Paris Syndrome. In fact, it is so bad, that as of 2004, the Japanese embassy now offers a 24-hour hotline to help people who are suffering from this depression while on vacation. It would not be a stretch then, in this idolism of France, to make Arruruerie have a French sounding name. Arruruerie is not a word as far as we know! Verdict: Tite Kubo. The first name is passable but… the second name? You kinda tried. Always use the proper name for things. Fear of a name increases fear of the thing itself – J.K. Rowling

6. Jugem Jugem (Gintama)

[2_images_in_row character='Jugem Gintama' anime='gintama dvd']
[sourceLink asin="B00ZA2ES8I" asin_jp="" text="" url="" ]

Jugem Jugem is a poop throwing side character in Gintama who ends up getting a whole arc in the story called the Jugem Arc. He hates Gintoki and will always throw his poop at him when he sees him. We would talk about this name after giving you the full thing but really, why bother once you read the translation. Jugem Jugem’s actual full name is “Jugemu Jugemu Unko Nageki Ototoi no Shin-chan no Pantsu Shinpachi no Jinsei Balmunk Fezarion Isaac Schneider San Bun no Ichi no Junjou na Kanjou no Nokotta San Bun no Ni wa Sakamuke ga Kininaru Kanjou Uragiri wa Boku no Namae wo Shitteiru you de Shiranai no wo Boku wa Shitteiru Rusu Surume Medaka Kazunoko Koedame Medaka... Kono Medaka wa Sakki to Chigau Yatsu Dakara Ikeno Medaka no Hou Dakara Raa-yuu Yuuteimiyaouki Mukou Pepepepepepepepepepepepe Bichiguso Maru” That translated to roughly “Jugem Jugem Shit-Tossing the Life of Shin-Chan’s Two-Day-Old Underwear Balmung Fezalion Isaac Schneider 1/3 True Love 2/3 Hangnail Anxiety Betrayal Knows My Name Or Does It Really Ignore Calls Squid Dogfish Halibut Trout-Cod Dogfish This Is A Different Dogfish, I’m Talking About The Dogfish Shark Kaluga Ray Yuuteimiyaoukimukou pepepepepepepepepepepepe Runny Diarrhea.” Verdict: Pretty sure you did the same as the others, Hideaki Sorachi, or you just really like to troll everyone. Either way, kudos.

5. Bring Stabity (Mobile Suit Gundam 00 Second Season)

[2_images_in_row character='Bring Stabity Mobile Suit Gundam 00 Second Season' anime='Mobile Suit Gundam 00 Second Season dvd']
[sourceLink asin="B003XJ58RU" asin_jp="" text="" url="" ]

Bring Stabity was a character in Gundam 00. Stoic in nature, he survives until the second season when he is killed in a battle with Tieria. Afterwards, he is cloned and his clones are used as suicide pilots. Not exactly the greatest legacy eh? Bring right off from the beginning is something that clearly was pulled out of a dictionary. Not even bothering to try, he was given the name “Bring”. Now, Stabity, on the other hand, could go a few ways. It could refer to stability and the spelling, surprise surprise, was messed up in translation from katakana Japanese to English and the last “li” just never made it in. That would make sense. Then again, it also sounds as if Bring is bringing some sort of stabity into your life? Maybe Bring is about to stab you? Who knows. Considering that his first name is Bring, the first theory stands with more logic. We doubt that the writer was able to produce on their own. Verdict: What is dictionary Yoshiyuki Tomino? GG For kinda trying? I love the name of honor, more than I fear death. – Julius Caesar

4. Ren Ren Ren Nagusaran Rensia Ruroonren Nakora (DearS)

[2_images_in_row character='Ren Ren Ren Nagusaran Rensia Ruroonren Nakora DearS' anime='DearS dvd']
[sourceLink asin="B00IZHPO74" asin_jp="" text="" url="" ]

Ren Ren Ren Nagusaran Rensei Rurooonren Nakora was part of DearS as was the DearS for Takeya. Sweet and nice, she was given the name Ren by Takuya but how she got her unique name is related to her ID number which is 000-3901-0. Somehow the series, the creator made up a special language just for it and gave her, her name. Now, in the series, she is called Ren Adiero but her actual name is the monstrosity above. This one, while incredibly ridiculous, is understandable. Supposedly in the made up alien language, her long ridiculous name is essentially numbers being sounded out. Literally. That is it. If we cannot think of a better reason, other than that her name is ridiculous, for being the pronunciation of 000-3901-0. True, in English Zero zero zero threeninezeroone zero is a pretty stupid name. The same falls true for Japanese with zero zero zero sankyuuzeroichi zero. Alternatively, maru maru maru sankyuumaruichi maru is another one. Verdict: Now you are just being silly. Chill out Peach-Pit and have a few seats

3. Julis-Alexia Marie Florentia Renate van Riessfeld (Gakusen Toshi Asterisk (The Asterisk War: The Academy City on the Water))

[2_images_in_row character='gakuen toshi asterisk 2nd season Julis-Alexia von Riessfeld' anime='Gakusen Toshi Asterisk dvd']
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="B01629T6JS" text="" url="" ]

In the world of Gakusen Toshi Asterisk, Julis Riessfeld, as she is known, is a princess from a faraway off land where she has arrived to raise money for an orphanage in Lieseltania. Hot headed and arrogant, she is ready for a fight at all times. This includes when she meets Ayato for the first time and jumps to conclusions that he wants her. Tsundere to the core she is just as ridiculous as her name. While there are traditions in certain countries to give people multiple names, such as in Spanish speaking cultures, German does not in particular. So why give a female lead 1, 2, 3…6 names?? Oh right! Cause it sounds EXOTIC. Recently, there has been an uptick in German sounding names to us while to Japanese people, it sounds like as if someone is speaking sweet nothings into their ears. There are no kanji for her name which means they all come in the favorite flavor of, that’s right, katakana! We could look up the etymology of these names but that would be boorish and we don’t want to do that to you now do we? Maybe Japan is just moving beyond France due to Paris Syndrome and has found a new country to idealize. Verdict: Were you even trying Yuu Miyazaki?? Every name is real. That's the nature of names. – Jerry Spinelli

2. Ketsuno Ana (Gintama)

[2_images_in_row character='Christel Ketsuno Ana Ketsuno Gintama' anime='Gintama dvd']
[sourceLink asin="B004BR7XIA" asin_jp="" text="" url="" ]

Full stop. This name is a dirty word. Now that we have said that, let’s introduce #2 on our list! Crystel Ketsuno, later found out to be Ana Ketsuno, is a weather reporter who is actually the affection of Gintoki’s crush! She is sweet and upbeat before and after her marriage. Now then let’s get to this stupid name. Ana is a common name cropping up in Japan where they will use kanji to make the sounds An and A or A and Na, to make a girl’s name. What happens though it that in Ana’s case we need to treat her name as Japanese people see it. Not Ana Ketsuno as we see it but Ketsuno Ana. When you break the name apart “Ketsu” means “butt”, “no” is a particle indicating possession while “ana” means “hole”. Can you connect the dots? We will give you a minute… Correct, her name literally means butthole when reached at face value. Now she was given Kanji to make her name seem real as Ketsuno. Ketsu means “to tie to bind to fasten” while No means “plains or field” with the Kanji assigned. However, Japanese people are not about to learn this random character’s name, but rather laugh in glee every time someone says “butthole” when referring to Ana. She was made to be a joke and exists as a joke to everyone in Japan. Verdict: Hideaki Sorachi Troll Level: Over 9000

1. Dickel (Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu)

[2_images_in_row character='Dickel Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu' anime='Legend of the Galactic Heroes dvd']
[sourceLink asin="B00H3SS3ZG" asin_jp="" text="" url="" ]

If you ever want to feel really good about yourself and the decisions you have made in life, watch Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu. The 110 episode OVA started in 1988 and ended in 1997. Littered with battles in Space and a fantastic watch, this space opera is one to write home to mom about when it comes to stupid names. Dickel, however, with his deadpan expressions and horrifying face, takes the cake on stupid names. Dickel. Just take it in. Don’t worry, we will be here when you get back. Dickel. Dickel… Who in their right mind was like, “this sounds like a fantastic name. Let’s do this one. It will be a-ok”, and then submitted it to someone who submitted it to their boss who was like “Let’s make this dude appear in the anime.” W H O said yes to this?? Dickel. Maybe they were going for a friend of Schneizel and ended up with something that sounds like Pickle but… it's clearly not that. Dickel is the perfect example of a stupid name, and what happens when not only do you not have a grasp of a foreign language, but you go and attempt to act like you do, and fabricate names. If Dickel could teach us a lesson it would be this, “Do your research.” Verdict: Oh Yoshiki Tanaka, you troll. You did not even try. Silver star for not even trying… You are a name, not a number. Never forget that name, whatever they tell you here. – Jane Yolen

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="B01GHU417E" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes="13" aired="July 5, 2016"]

For those who haven’t watched the first season of D.Gray-Man, perhaps it would be best suited to do so first before hopping into the second season. Much of the story continues from where the last story left off over 10 years ago, and now Allen and his team of exorcists must face off against the Noah, and a new threat that looms in the darkness. The Millennium Earl continues to taunt and manipulate Allen and his team, using sinister tactics in order to pit each person against each other to bring down the order. However, Earl knows something dark about Allen that no one else seems to realize, and so Earl is destined to bring out this dark power and use Allen to destroy his team and complete his ultimate plot to rule the universe.

3 Major similarities shared by Re:Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu and D.Gray-Man Hallow!

1. Mysterious Power

Allen and Subaru have their own unique abilities that allow them to deal with certain situations in their own way. Allen has the power of being able to destroy akuma, and save the tortured souls that live within it to free them from further suffering. His innocence is seen as the light of god, since it’s used mainly to destroy darkness within and to restore peace. Both individuals were totally unaware of their mysterious power until they came to terms with it on their own, and used it to their advantage. The two never asked for their powers, and were thrown into a new world without being prepared for it. Subaru can die and come back to life, but only to start back at the same position he was initially. The two must learn to understand just why they’ve been chosen, and to uncover more information as to why these events are unfolding around them. The enemy in both shows also have their own mysterious abilities which affect the outcome of story as it progresses.

2. Compassion to help others

Allen and Subaru were thrown into a crazy world full of supernatural beings with extraordinary powers. Through their journey they encountered many victims of suffering, or who were in need of help and the two always made it their priority to help when possible. For Subaru it was to help Satella track down her insignia, while for Allen it was to protect the well being of his comrades in battle. While they never truly asked for this type of lifestyle, they eventually realized that this was their calling and made sure to take care of what was necessary in order to move forward. Whenever someone was in danger the two would take the leap of faith and do their very best to ensure that nobody gets hurt. They sacrificed themselves for the sake of humanity, and to prevent further harm from turning the world into a dark merciless environment. Their every decision counted because they realized just how valuable the help of others meant to them, and that more lives can be saved if they show care for everyone around them. While their circumstances constantly change throughout the show, they both show this tenacity to never give up in spite of what’s happening, to ensure that everyone can live their lives without any severe damage.

3. Death

If there’s one thing you’ll tend to see a lot of in both shows is a lot of dying. While D.Gray-Man focuses more directly on the action side of things, Re:ZERO uses light hearted comedy to cover up the real bloody truth that’s unfolding behind the scenes. Both encounter a lot of moments where people die and it’s up to both main leads to figure out a way to prevent more innocent people from suffering at the hands of evil. Subaru’s entire life is surrounded by death since he must use that ability to solve problems throughout his adventure. Allen however doesn’t want to die, and hates to see the souls of the innocent be devoured by the Akuma, which Earl created to wreak havoc on the world. Allen and his team of exorcists must make challenging decisions when it comes to dealing with the enemy, since Akuma can devour anyone and that soul of the person still lives within it. There are moments where Allen must face off against one of his own who has been devoured by the Akuma, and has no other choice but to kill it despite knowing that the person beneath the curse was a close team mate who meant a lot to him. Blood, sweat, and tears are what you’ll encounter while watching D.Gray-Man Hallow and so we highly recommend checking out both the first and current season to get the best experience.

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="B01HROF7CM" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes="12" aired="July 5, 2016 - September 20, 2016"]

Seigi is an extremely talented martial arts student who suddenly finds himself in a situation that he never expected to find himself in. A mysterious man approaches him one night with a stone that has a tattoo ingrained within it. From this moment Seigi’s life changed forever, as this mysterious tattoo has a deeper and darker secret that Seigi is about to uncover on his own. With this newly acquired ability embedded into his hand, new challenges await him as he must not only come to terms with this crazy power, but also deal with enemies who are after him to take back what’s rightfully theirs.

3 Major similarities shared by Re:Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu? and Taboo Tattoo

1. Uncovering the Truth

Seigi was unsure of what was about to unfold in his life, but he finds out the hard way when a young woman randomly notices his tattoo and from there she continues to pursue him. We later find out that this young woman named Bluesy is part of a team of tattoo specialists who are after the enemy who are using these tattoos to bring destruction upon the world. Seigi’s tattoo is known as the void and is an incredibly powerful tattoo that was limited in its quantity, and only gifted individuals were able to possess its true power. The same can be said for Subaru as he never had any intention of being thrown into the shark’s pit, but somehow he finds himself in a new environment with a deadly threat looming in the darkness. These two individuals are now in the midst of trying to uncover clues to figure out why their lives are in disarray, while teaming up with other supporting characters to solve the ongoing problem.

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Taboo Tattoo Ep 7" url="" ]

2. Fearless in battle

Once Seigi figured out just how his power worked, he made it his mission to protect everyone especially Touko, his childhood friend. Whatever battle came his way he never backed down, and always ran straight in without much planning. While this may have been seen as reckless to those around him, this demonstrated just how fearless he was when it came to saving the ones he cared about. The fear of death surely resonated with Seigi, but that really didn’t stop him from doing what he felt was best in his heart to save everyone around him. His ability was overpowered compared to the rest of the cast, and he knew that so he used it to his advantage at all times. Similarly, Subaru showed just how fearless he was in the earlier episodes when Satella informed him of the stolen insignia, and he didn’t even think twice about what he was about to get himself into. His only thought was that he needed to repay Satella back for saving his life, and so he risked his own life to see that Satella could retrieve her insignia. Unfortunately for Subaru he ended up biting off more than he could chew, similar to Seigi, and put himself in a much tighter bind than expected.

3. Overcoming dangerous threats

Both Seigi and Subaru have a lot in store for them up ahead, and so they need to use their wits to overcome the dangerous threats immediately. This of course is no walk in the park, as their enemies are extremely powerful and use supernatural abilities to decimate whoever stands in their way. While there’s a lot of laughter in both shows, both have a very dark undertone behind it all and throughout the show you start to see the truth unraveling right before your very eyes. These threats aren’t here to make amends, they’re here to take what they feel is rightfully theirs, and if someone else impedes on their plans then there’s hell to pay. Seigi must now work alongside this elite team of tattoo users to battle with these incredibly strong foes, and to prevent the world from further harm. Each threat that he encounters just gets stronger than the next, with abilities that not only tear through buildings but can eviscerate anything that gets in the way. Will these two get their retribution and get a chance to save the world from evil? Well if you liked Re:Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu, then be sure to watch the rest of Taboo Tattoo to find out more!

Introduction

Storytelling plays a huge role in how enjoyable an anime can be. The appeal of any media we consume is greatly based on escapism and our emotional response to it. Anime is often, and sometimes arbitrarily, categorized into genres, but what if we could find our next favorite anime by categorizing them into emotional arcs: the path the story follows according to positive and negative emotions. In a large-scale data mining experiment, the University of Vermont analyzed over 1,700 written stories in English to determine the most popular emotional arcs. [https://www.technologyreview.com/s/601848/data-mining-reveals-the-six-basic-emotional-arcs-of-storytelling/] They revealed six emotional pattern shapes: (1) rags-to-riches or rise, (2) steady ongoing fall, (3) fall and then rise, (4) rise and then fall, (5) rise-fall-rise, and (6) fall-rise-fall. These basic arcs can also be combined as building blocks to create an even more complex and emotional ride. How do these emotional arcs fit with anime? We’re really interested in applying this new way of categorization to our favorite anime. The original study analyzed the emotional arcs by words. For anime, however, there are many more ways emotions are revealed beyond dialog, including visuals and music. The computation analysis would be much more complex, and Honey has refused requests to get access to a super computer, but we’re going to discuss it anyway using Honey’s anime expertise. Let’s take a look at each arc one-by-one.

[ad_top2 class="mt40"]

The Rise

Food Wars! Shokugeki no Soma wallpaper
[sourceLink asin="B00WJGGRD2" asin_jp="" text="" url="" ]

The rags-to-riches story arc is a basic rise-to-greatness, zero-to-hero storyline and is often the beginning arc for many shounen, magical girl, and idol anime when a relatively average person becomes a hero, be it Dragonball Z, Sailor Moon, or K-On. One anime that follows this emotional arc religiously is the super-power parody One Punch Man, in which Saitama is your regular Average Joe who develops super powers and takes on and defeats increasingly tougher opponents. There are no limits! The only way is up! Comedies, like One Punch Man, Gintama, and BECK, can take advantage of this story arc, because it is in fact, quite basic in design. This allows for more flexibility in delivering jokes without disrupting the overall plot, but of course, this pattern isn’t restricted to one genre. Straightforward romance plots in both harem and shoujo anime follow a general rise pattern. Long-lasting battle anime (One Piece, Naruto, Fairy Tail, Bleach, Hunter x Hunter, Magi) have a generally upward trend, even though there are minor setbacks. This pattern is one of the most versatile of the six. It’s also common in coming of age stories, such as Spirited Away, FLCL, and Space Patrol Luluco. Recent anime that have taken advantage of this emotional building block are Shokugeki no Soma (Food Wars), Amaama to Inazuma, Tales of Zestiria the X, Tanaka-kun wa Itsumo Kedurage, Snow White with the Red Hair, Ore Monogatari, Fukigen na Mononokean (Morose Mononokean), Boku no Hero Academia, Bungo Stray Dogs, the Monogatari series, and the JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure series. Usually marked with a neutral start and a positive ending, these plots focus heavily on the determination and perseverance of characters. Sometimes, these characters are rather simple in their stubborn desires, Soma-kun or Gouda Takeo, for example. Other times, these characters have more complex ideologies that lead them towards their end goal, such as with Inazuma-sensei or Killua. The appeal of this emotional arc is pretty obvious. Someone, a normal person like you or me, finds the source to happiness or success and drives toward that goal. It’s the ideal situation. Of course, there are always some hiccups along the way, but the general trend still points upward, and we love seeing our favorite characters reach for the stars and actually get the wonderful ending they deserve.

The Fall

2 Grave of the Fireflies Capture
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Grave of the Fireflies Movie Capture" url="" ]

Life, however, is not usually a fairy tale and more of a fail tale. Here comes the tragedy, a constant downward spiral that ends sadly, as with Romeo and Juliet (spoilers?). These plots are equally enthralling and all the more dramatic with a harsh ping of reality. We keep these stories around to remind us that life isn’t fair and teach us life lessons. Rock bottom doesn’t really exist. It should come as no surprise that some very popular anime are filled with tragedy, the most notable being Death Note. Light is an all-around respected and admirable guy. He somehow becomes a god-like person when a death note falls into his life. He’s believes himself above other mortals, and thus, begins his tragic fall. Throughout the Light vs. L arc, we seen Light losing his moral compass and eventually, well, you know what happens. Anime has been using tragedy as a major plot arc for a while, and it doesn’t stop, including no-one-is-safe anime, such as Akame ga Kill, MIrai Nikki, and Danganronpa. Dark by design, horror anime Elfen Lied was also painstakingly tragic, whereas School Days is shockingly gory—sorry, tragic. Like watching a train wreck, watching a person self-implode or fail is a strong emotional experience. Anyone who watches Grave of Fireflies or Now and Then, Here and Then knows how devastating the outcome of this pattern is. We keep rooting for our tragic figures to pull themselves out of their situation, so when everyone ends up dead or traumatized, it’s hits us that much harder.

[ad_middle class="mt40 mb40"]

Fall and Rise

3 fmab op 1 Fullmetal Alchemist Capture
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood Opening Image" url="" ]

Of course, you can get knocked down, and you can get up again. They’re never going to keep you down. This is the basic premise of many sports anime, including the ever-popular Haikyuu, in which our beloved Karosuno volleyballers are called “fallen champions” and “flightless crows,” as the school itself had an illustrious past and a mediocre present. Even the main characters are all fall at first. Kageyama Tobio was a dominating player who got shunned by his teammates. Hinata Shoyo put his all into volleyball only to be defeated in his first official match. The team, Kageyama, and Hinata, later try to overcome these initial setbacks, but in a major season one ending, they in fact, fail. Lucky or us, since the second season, we’ve been seeing a steady rise with the humble beginnings of a Cinderella story. This is even more popular than the straight-forward rise emotional arc, because we can get more sympathy for the players as they start their upward climb, and looking at the size of the Haikyuu fanbase, it’s definitely working for them. Sports and battle anime that have a lot more episodes will repeat a cycle of fall, rise, fall, rise, fall, rise throughout its entirety. Another good anime with this major plot pattern would be Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, in which Ed and Al are met with tragedy that leads them on a journey to make up for past mistakes. Redemption is a key component of many fall and rise arcs. As for the sports titles, we have Baby Steps, Kuroko’s Basketball, Days, Cheer Danshi, Free!, Ping Pong The Animation, etc. Whereas sports titles generally start off with athletic frustration that later turns into determination, other anime that use this plot device can be very dark or intensely sad with an eventual rise or heroism or happiness. These include Arslan Senki, Seraph of the End, Blue Exorcist, Shingeki no Kyojin, Sword Art Online, ReLIFE, Clannad: After Story, Orange, Tokyo Ghoul, and Boku dake ga Inai Machi (Erased).

Rise and Fall

sayaka miki puella magi madoka magica capture wallpaper
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Mahou Shoujo Madoka★Magica Episode 8" url="" ]

On the other side of the coin we have the Icarus pattern: the rise and fall. Arguably, Death Note is in fact a rise and fall anime, but the fall is the major pattern. Rise and fall anime aren’t as numerous, but there are definitely some very good titles that pull it off nicely. Think Puella Magi Madoka Magica. It starts off as your normal magical girl anime, but then oh no, oh dear, no. In the beginning, we see Madoka join the magical girl brigade and learn about the new world she’s entered, but soon, we start seeing all the cracks in the magical girl system and all that’s left is sadness. As for other anime which starts on a upward path and then ends with a bucket of tears, we have a great tear-jerker You’re Lie in April. Even taking a step outside of its own genre, we have the OVA Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt. This pattern is no stranger to shock and surprise. Sometimes a generally hopeful plot will end on an emotional low point, such as in Cowboy Bebop, Pyscho-Pass, Terror in Resonance, and Into the Forest of Fireflies’ Light. Rise and fall anime tend to be major heart breakers in the anime landscape. The build up and likeability of the characters make the fall that much more tragic.

Rise-fall-rise and fall-rise-fall

steins;gate wallpaper
[sourceLink asin="B00PJRXJJI" asin_jp="" text="" url="" ]

Things can even get more complicated. For anime fans that like complexity in their plots, this up and down is welcome and keeps the story fresh and interesting. Code Gaess takes advantage of this up and down and leaves you wanting to know what will happen next in its fall-rise-fall emotional arc. Lelouch is an exiled prince with a veritable tragic backstory, in which his mother dies and his sister loses the use of her legs and eyes. On the brink of life or death, Lelouch makes a contract with C.C. Thus, begins his rise to power as Zero and then as an emperor; however, Lelouch must become hated by the world in order to create a peaceful and ideal world. Fall-rise-fall becomes the devastating modus operandi as we cry our way through AnoHana and Angel Beats! It also noted as the strong point of Fate/Zero. Even though they have yet to end, we see this pattern being played out over and over in Re:Zero kara Hjimeru Isekai Seikatsu and possibly in the prohibition-era drama 91 Days. Seriously, how will they end? Conversely, rise-fall-rise is much more uplifting, with a marked fall in the middle. One good example is Steins;Gate, in which we follow the exploits of a mad scientist who stumbles upon time travel, only to face a horrific time loop resulting in Okabe reliving the death of this dear friend, but finally achieving a satisfying resolution in a timeline leap. This pattern is prominent in some of the most beloved titles in anime history, including Neon Genesis Evangelion, most Mobile Suit Gundam titles, Honey and Clover, Sakamichi no Apollon, NANA, and the Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. Newer anime that make quite a stir for its rise-fall-rise plot pattern include Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress, Charlotte, Gurren Lagaan, Noragami, Kiznaiver, Shinsekai yori (From the New World), and A Lull in the Sea. It’s amazing what an interesting plot can do for anime, instantly launching them into legendary status for many anime lovers. Still, it should be noted that this complicated pattern can in fact make a story hard to follow and ultimately lead to its demise filled with plot holes, illogical jumps, and unanswered questions.

Combining emotional arcs

kill la kill wallpaper
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Official Website" url="http://www.kill-la-kill.jp/special/04.html" ]

While these are the six basic emotional arcs, it should come as no surprise that throughout a whole story, these arcs are combined to create new stories. In the case of Kuroko’s Basketball, it’s easy to see the fall-and-rise pattern that, in the conclusion of its third season, ends as a Cinderella story rags-to-riches pattern. Kill la Kill, likewise, starts off as a rising zero-to-hero story, but after learning the secret of the Life Fibers, we are faced with an emotional arc reset that follows a more complex fall-and-rise pattern. In the case of Death Note, depending on your emotional attachment to Light or L, the emotional arc itself can be variable. If you’re particularly taken by Light, it could very much seem like a rise and fall. On the other hand, if you find yourself on L’s side, the shape is more of a rise-fall-rise, including the anime’s second act. Complicated series that combine individual and political story lines, such as Shinsekai yori and Attack on Titan will also combine emotional arcs when transitioning from character-level plotlines and world-building plotlines. In Shinsekai yori, the character-level arc is very rise-fall-rise, whereas the political side is more fall and rise. The Fate series, as well, takes in quite a number of different emotional arcs throughout its entirety.

Emotional arcs vs. genres

anohana wallpaper
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Official Website" url="http://www.anohana.jp/tv/special/index.html" ]

By now, you’ve probably noticed that emotional arcs are not restricted by genre. Likewise, anime that may seem “similar” actually follow different emotional arcs. Take for instance, sadness-overload anime Clannad: After Story, AnoHana, and Your Lie in April. Clannad: After Story is categorically fall and rise. If you take into account Clannad and After Story together, it is overall a rise-fall-rise epic. We all cried buckets of tears during the emotional fall out, but the upward conclusion had us smiling through happy tears. AnoHana starts on a rather negative note, with a group of friends irrevocably separated. The group then begins on a more upward trend as they reignite their friendship for Menma’s sake, but inevitably Menma passes on. Again, we’re crying and smiling, but the smile is more of a fight for sanity while we say goodbye to the young ghost girl. Finally, Your Lie in April is a visually-appealing and beautiful-sounding emotional car crash that we all see coming but take part in anyway. Although with a tragic backstory, the anime begins on a surprising upbeat note, in which Arima Kousei becomes enamored with Miyazono Kaori. Arima has already decided to live out a normal life as an unnoticeable Friend B, but Kaori changes all that, pulling him back to the stage in an uplifting performance. Arima discovers a love of music and a desire to be a musician. As we gain more insight into Arima’s past, we watch him battle his way past his childhood trauma, but then we also have to deal with Kaori passing away. Your Lie in April starts pleasant, but gets heavier and heavier, ending with us crying, screaming, and throwing things. Arima, how are you possibly smiling at the end? He’s a greater man than the rest of us. Arguably, all are beautifully made cryfests, but fans can easily point out which one they personally enjoy the most. It could very well be that the plot pattern is the determining factor in which one you personally think is the best, whereas your BFF thinks another is #1. Out of these three good cries, which emotional arc shape did you personally find the most appealing?

Final Thoughts

Good stories come in all shapes and sizes. Maybe you have one type of pattern that you particularly like, or maybe you find yourself weaving between different emotional arcs. As with the research done by the University of Vermont, the relationship between emotional arc shape and audience appeal has yet to be determined. Still, we’re able to pick our own favorites up until computers take over the world and tell us which is the best. We hope you enjoyed this week’s version of otaku hyper-analysis. Which emotional arc pattern do you like the most? Which pattern does your favorite anime follow?

I have been watching anime from a very young age, however I only first discovered the term ‘anime’ during my junior high school days. Ever since my cousin introduced me to anime such as Naruto and Bleach, I have been hooked for life. The reason I love anime so much is indescribable, I don’t know what exactly it is about anime that piqued my interest from the beginning but I have always been fascinated by the art style and the unique stories that are told. The fictional world that you become immersed within, the character that you come to love, and all the other different aspects, bring a wonderful experience as a whole. Like a film or a book, it brings a unique way of sharing stories that we all come to enjoy and appreciate for life.

5. Death Note

Death Note dvd
[sourceLink asin="B00NH8OANK" asin_jp="" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 37 " aired=" Oct. 2006 – Jun. 2007 "]

The first on my list is the one and only Death Note, a true spectacle of a mystery and psychological thriller that has many intense moments that bring you to the very edge of your seat. It follows the story of Yagami Light, a high school genius who one day finds a supernatural notebook that had fallen from the sky, from the realm of the death gods. A notebook that has a very unique ability; any name that is written within its pages will die. The notebook belonged to the Death God Ryuk, who was bored of life and decided to stir up some fun by releasing the power of death into the human world. It may seem like unstoppable power to have, however an unmovable force lurking in the shadows opposes Light. A young and clever man that goes by the name of L is a genius detective that has never failed to solve a case. What happens when an unstoppable force meets an unmovable object? This is the epic story and battle of wits between the two geniuses, each with their own view and way of bringing justice to the world. This is one of my top anime because of its action packed storyline and unique art, which brings a perfect combination of excitement and tension throughout the series. The psychological battle between Light and L entice the mind in a way that is unfathomable, there are many clever moments that make you appreciate the level of thought the writer has put into the series.

[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" Oct. 2014 – Dec. 2014 "]

The next anime on this list is Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works, part of the Fate/stay night series. It is about a secret magical war that has been going on for generations between seven mages and their heroic spirit servants for the all mighty, wish-granting Holy Grail. The servants are beings that had once existed in the history of the world, who are summoned belonging to a particular class system. The protagonist of the story is Shiro Emiya who accidentally enters the fifth Holy War and ends up summoning the saber class hero, known as Saber. Together they form a temporary alliance with Toosaka Rin, one of Shiro’s classmates who turned out to be a mage with a family lineage that has been involved with the war for generations, she is the successor who was brought up and trained as a mage for this very purpose. Rin has the servant Archer and she also saved Shiro’s life when he was accidentally caught up within her fight with another mage, and their servant. With mutual enemies, together they face the other 5 mages in hopes of winning the ultimate prize, a holy grail capable of granting any wish. I had watched the original Fate/stay night anime when it came out in 2006 and it has been one of my favorite anime for a long time, until I watched this version of the series. The reason this is one of my top anime is because of the great story and in-depth character development. It also has many amazing fight scenes that leave you amazed. The beautiful animation quality and style are one of a kind and it is definitely an anime I would personally recommend to everyone.

Next up is Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood, an action and adventure anime that follows the story of two brothers that go on a journey to discover a way to retrieve what they had lost. Edward and Alphonse Elric are alchemists, people that have the ability to change the properties of something into something else as long as it follows the law of equivalent exchange. They set their sights on an item known as the philosopher’s stone that is an all-powerful legendary item, which allows one to overcome the law of equivalent exchange. The brothers lost their mother at a young age and attempted to revive her with alchemy, known as human transmutation, it is one of the taboos of the art. Their attempt fails, resulting in Edward losing his left leg and Alphonse losing his entire body. In a moment of distress, Edward saves his little brother by attaching his soul to a suit of armor, and in the process he loses his right arm. Edward finds himself obtaining a metal arm and leg known as ‘automail’ that allow him to perform alchemy again, which gains him the name of ‘Fullmetal Alchemist’. I had also watched the original rendition of this anime, but I found that this remake was one of the best things they could’ve done with the series. It stayed true to the original manga source and had better animation quality that brought a new, and lighthearted feel to the otherwise dark tale of two brothers. The story of the two brothers is of epic proportions and is definitely an anime everyone should watch.

The runner up on this list belongs to Ano Hi Mita Hana no Namae wo Bokutachi wa Mada Shiranai, otherwise known simply as AnoHana. This is an anime about a solitary boy named Jinta Yadomi who spends his days at home playing games. He has been this way ever since a childhood accident that left him traumatized for life, the death of his friend Menma. One hot summer day, Menma suddenly appears to Shinta and starts to pester him about fulfilling a forgotten wish. He believes that she is a figment of his imagination but soon begins to realize that she actually exists, as a ghost that only he seems to be able to see. Shinta slowly begins to break out of his shut-in lifestyle as he begins to figure out what the forgotten wish is. He ends up reuniting with his other childhood friends that had moved on with their own lives separately since the incident many years ago. One by one, he convinces them that Menma has re-appeared but his friends are skeptical of Jinta, thinking that he has finally broken and become mentally unstable. Soon after, they begin to believe Shinta and together they try to find what the wish that Menma had made was but they had forgotten, to bring peace to her soul. This is a fairly short anime, however it is one of the only anime that has been able to reduce me to tears with its heart-wrenching story. It is a beautifully animated and written story that shares a lot of emotional moments between the characters. There are no other words that I can use to describe this anime other than it’s beautiful.

1. Clannad: After Story

[sourceLink asin="B002S913O8" asin_jp="" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 24 " aired=" Oct. 2008 – Mar. 2007 "]

On the top of my list is the one and only Clannad: After Story, though I’d like to also include the first season, Clannad. This is an emotional rollercoaster of a slice of life anime that follows the story of Tomoya Okazaki and Nagisa Furukawa, who became good friends and lovers after they graduated from high school together. Following the events of the first season, they get married and begin to live together. Tomoya struggles to decide his own future but is determined to do his best for Nagisa, by enduring the hardships of adult life and finding time to be with her. One day, Nagisa reveals to Tomoya that she is pregnant; Tomoya who is overwhelmed by the news works harder than ever to be able to support his family. Though the journey is both difficult and strenuous, together they try their best to push forward and overcome any problems whilst maintaining contact with their friends and family. Clannad: After Story in my opinion is the best anime I have seen so far, with its powerful drama and moving storyline. It is breathtakingly wonderful with great character personalities and development. It tells a story that is true to life itself, making you realize that everything in life is not as easy as it seems and it shows you the importance of family. Clannad: After Story mixes a lighthearted slice of life style of anime with deep emotional moments that are simply magnificent. It is really hard to put this into words, but Clannad is an anime that leaves a long lasting impression and is truly one of a kind.

Final Thoughts

Well that concludes this list. Anime has been a huge part of my life and I have devoted a lot of time to watching these wonderful stories told visually, as I am sure you have as well. It is truly a work of art with many different genres and styles that appeal to each person differently. What I can say about this list is that I feel it reflects the type of person I am as much as it has shaped me into the person I am. We all love anime to the point that the stories are influential in how we perceive life and allow us to appreciate the devotion people have put into making these stories come to life. The meaning of anime is different with everyone and we all have our favorites, but what is wonderful about anime, is its ability to bring us all together and to share with each other the stories that have shaped who we are individually.

Reactions Around the Web

She is always taking time off and going on hiatus and this is why she sucks!
Just go monthly instead of weekly if it is too much.
I think she is taking time off to deal with her family.
Men take time off for like gaming or hobbies while women have to take time off for things like Children or family. This is kinda like discrimination.
She is rich. Just hire someone to help out at home!

    [Information episodes=" 201 " aired=" April 4, 2006 - March 25, 2010 "]

Gintama really lures you in immediately with its quirkiness, extreme humor, and many hilarious references to other anime. This journey takes us back to feudal Japan as we join Gintama on his crazy random adventures. This isn't your ordinary feudal Japan however, as every encounter Gintoki meets is unusually crazy, which is what adds the spice and flavoring to this tasty treat of a series. Gintoki isn't very keen on finding a job like most other citizens and so we see Gintoki on this endless adventure desperately seeking whatever job comes his way, while battling strange looking monsters, a weird Yakuza clan and much more. As stated earlier, Gintama is just all over the place when it comes to its use of humor. The variety in which humor is used is incredible, ranging from crude all the way to just over the top and it's all packaged together brilliantly. Each time Gintama runs into enemies, they don't even feel like enemies since they all end up doing something so dumb, that you end up tearing up at their randomness. You'll have scenes where characters casually walk around naked, or someone getting beaten to a bloody pulp while getting shot at the same time. The nonstop craziness is what provides the flavor to the show, and lines up well with the humor Prison School portrays.

    [sourceLink asin="B00PNQNJRW" asin_jp="" text="" url="" ]
    [Information episodes=" 13 " aired=" April 8, 2011 – July 1, 2011 "]

This show is so full of crude humor that you'd swear you're watching a HBO series. Every scene that you watch is incredible, as both Akutabe and Azazel go at it, with Azazel getting killed every second. His friends however are where the humor goes to the extreme, as Beelzebub is a bird who gets turned on by the sight of fecal matter and, without any shame, devours it on screen. This unconventional humor is what makes this show such a blast to watch, because you're disgusted by it or laughing so hard at just how random it all is. Akutabe's job is to summon demons in order to help his clients who are in trouble, but even his clients are something beyond this planet. For every problem that Akutabe solves, another one shows up more hysterical than the last, as he pummels Azazel to a bloody pulp for disobeying orders and watching ecchi. You'll see cakes made out of poo, eyeballs popping out of their sockets, and more in this extremely funny anime. If you aren't sold by this at all, even the trailer itself is funny enough to sell you, and you're lured into it you're stuck in a world of crazy over the top fun.

Comedy anime never usually have a premise or some sort of direction that it takes you, it usually just throws in a wide variety of antics that keep you glued to the screen. Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu Ni! is the sequel to the first part of the series as much of what happens revolves around Yoshii as he strolls through the halls of his school searching for answers he'll never find. His dense personality will have you scratching your head at first, until you dive more into it all to realize how much of a pervert this guy is. The show serves its true purpose as being a pure comedic blast from the moment you watch the first episode, up until the very end. So you're probably wondering, but what about the story? There must be a story behi- No story to be found here as much of this show is all about unexpected events which just leave you cracking up at all times. [Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" August 8, 2008 - October 28, 2008 "]

So now we embark on another journey in search of laughter, and we have arrived at Detroit Metal City. Of course none of what transpires throughout the show even takes place in Detroit which already makes you laugh just a little inside, and wonder why they used that name in the first place. The story looks at Negishi, who finds his current life to be a bore and decides to move into the big city of Tokyo. He comes up with an idea to be the front man of a death metal band known as Krauser II, but deep down would rather just sit at home and drink tea. Random right? You definitely don't need to remind us on that one. This show is just tear inducingly funny using quick and unrelenting humor to hit you straight in the gut and keep you coming back for more. You'll see pelvic thrusting, extreme cursing, and just nonsensical things that are bound to have you falling back in your chair chuckling like a child. Each episode is short but undeniably sweet, as you're always in for a treat once the dialogue between characters rolls in. Each time one person tries to speak, another cuts them off with stark remarks that remind you of British slapstick comedy, with Negishi humiliating himself whenever an opportunity presented itself. These jokes are vulgar and poignant, slapping you in the face until you're tomato red, but so incredibly entertaining that you'll crave more each and every time.

So imagine living in a society where anything sexual and lewd has been banned, with any utterance of a word pertaining to the subject leading you into deep trouble. Well that's exactly what goes down in the series as the government has placed very strict rules upon the use of explicit actions, and so Okuma must somehow find a way to break this wall of injustice down before it's too late. He meets with Anna, a girl that he has a huge crush on but then must confront a much bigger problem with a terrorist group known as Blue Snow gets involved to fight against censorship laws. Alright so where does the comedy kick in you ask? Right from the very beginning as this show tries so hard to abolish sex but then uses it in every scene possible to remind you just how much you can't avoid it. Blue Snow, who is also known as Ayame, wears a stylish pair of lewd panties over her head, while strutting her stuff in the latest white cloak with very little to show underneath. Every time Okuma tries to resist temptation and avoid getting arrested, lewd acts take place along with dirty and crude humor to bring it all together. The amount of dirty jokes you'll encounter are enough to make you wonder if this show actually invented dirty humor, since there's so much of it that you can't stop laughing. If you aren't crying by the end of this series, then rewatch it again, and then one more time until you realize the startling truth behind it all.

    [Information episodes=" 13 " aired=" July 4, 2010 - September 26, 2010 "]

Seitokai no Yakuindomo is a fantastic school comedy that really doesn't follow much of a plot, but provides a whopping dose of adult humor. Tsuda is a freshman in Ousai Academy and doesn't really know what to expect from it all, until one day he's surrounded by a group of attractive girls. Things get even more interesting as he somehow becomes vice president of the school council, and yet again finds himself in the company of girls. This hilarious story follows Tsuda as he must come to terms with this new life he's been bestowed with, while trying not to get on the wrong side of these girls who seem to already despise him already. So where do we start, sexual humor? Check. Girls who are crass and have no remorse for the main character? Check. Excellent wordplay, paired with sharp witted remarks? Check. Seitokai no Yakuindomo isn't going to appeal to everyone's tastes, but we can assure you that you'll learn a lot of sex while watching this. The incredible amount of dirty jokes and references to ejaculation will have your head spinning, but just enough of a dosage to not scare you away. When you look at the incredibly down right dirty jokes that took place in Prison School, you immediately feel somewhat humbled by this show simply because you become so absorbed by all the laughter that you forget what's even happening. The show isn't about capturing your heart with a romantic tale of fantasy and pleasure, but a show that has absolutely no shame whatsoever, and over the top humor that'll leave you holding your ribs in extreme laughter.

Youto Yokodera is a young pervert; a high school student that only cares about girls, swimsuits, short skirts and the female anatomy. Somehow though, his lewd acts pass off as having the best intentions. Trying to stay true to his perversion, Youto prays to a cat statue that grants him his wish to openly express his desires. He soon realizes that expressing his naughtiness wasn’t a good idea after all, since everyone can see the pervert in him. This puts him through some awkward and hilarious situations as he desperately tries to undo his wish and clean his reputation. Do you laugh your butt off too every time Big Andre from Prison School gets aroused for getting beaten to death or spit on? seito yakuin domo dvd
    [Information episodes=" 13 " aired=" Jul 2010 – Sep 2010 "]

The story in Seitokai Yakuindomo begins very much like Prison School. The Ousai Academy is accepting male students for the first time in its history. Takatoshi Tsuda didn’t pay attention to this fact and now has to adapt to school life surrounded by girls – girls who are used to being around only girls and speak way too openly about girl issues and sex. This results in completely bizarre, awkward and funny conversations, most of which are about sex. For a show that is so much about sex, it’s weird there’s little to no ecchi in it. The perversion is still there though and you’ll have a couple laughs watching it.

    3. Ladies versus Butlers!

If one episode per week of Prison School does not fully satisfy you and you’re looking for some more ecchi (isn’t it what we’re all looking for?), then your search is over. Ladies versus Butlers has got the fan service we all like and that hint of romance to spice it up. Akihano Hiru enters a boarding school as a butler. Very much like in Prison School, he is one of few male students in a high school full of beautiful girls. There’s a catch though, some of these girls are as beautiful as they are fearsome, and their sexiness is only rivaled by their loathing for men. Ladies vs Butlers, just like Prison School and many other harem Anime, features a wide display of female archetypes. You’ll find the tsundere, the clumsy girl, the childhood crush, lolis and many more. Most of them, of course, can’t help to see poor Akihano as a pervert. It doesn’t really help him much having a natural ability to slip, stumble and fall on girls’ breasts either. This makes the girls pretty mad, especially the tsundere girl, Sernia Flameheart who just doesn’t get tired of chasing Akihano to beat the heck out of him.

    4. Iketeru Futari

    iketeru futari dvd
    [Information episodes=" 16 " aired=" Feb 1999 – Feb 1999 "]

The relationship between the two main characters in Iketeru Futari reminds us of the relationship between the five boys and Meiko Shiraki (the vice president) in Prison School. That is to say, a perverted high school student that is constantly beaten down by his crush as a result of his improper behavior. Keisuke Saji spends his days daydreaming about hot women and he can’t help but fall in love with Akira Koizumi. She is a small, cute girl from his school who hates men in general and perverts above all. Iketeru Futari is a seinen comedy with a bit of romance and strong ecchi elements. It’s probably the funniest one on this list. You’ll have a great time watching naughty Keisuke’s desperate and pathetic attempts to win Koizumi over.

    5. Tonagura!

    tonagura dvd
    [Information episodes=" 13 " aired=" Jul 2006 – Oct 2006 "]

Another hilarious ecchi comedy is Tonagura. This is the story of Kazuki Arisaka, who’s always been in love with her neighbor and childhood friend, Yuuji, but hasn’t seen him for ten years. Now he has come back into her life, only that he hasn’t grown a bit. To Kazuki’s surprise, Yuuji is a dirty boy who tries at all costs to touch, grab and kiss Kazuki and her lady parts. Naturally, Yuuji’s filthy behavior leaves Kazuki no choice but to put him in his place by kicking his behind on a regular basis. I personally laugh my face off when these perverts get punched in the face and smashed against the wall. That is one of the things I love about Prison School. That, and the fan service obviously. Well, this show has both those things!

    6. Shimoneta to Iu Gainen ga Sonzai Shinai Taikutsu na Sekai (Shimoneta: A Boring World Where the Concept of Dirty Jokes Doesn't Exist)

Shimoneta to Iu Gainen ga Sonzai Shinai Taikutsu na Sekai dvd
    [Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" Jul 2015 – Ongoing"]

The title of this anime pretty much summarizes what it’s about. In a near future, it is forbidden to talk about sex, to watch pornography and even to say profanities. Pretty much anything that can be considered indecent behavior is illegal. Tanukichi Okuma enters an elite high school of the highest moral standards but is soon blackmailed by Ayame Kajou to perform a series of obscene acts of ‘terrorism’ within the school. Even though the girls in this show are not sadistic towards men, Shimoneta resembles Prison School in other ways; mainly in the toilet humor. Shimoneta is all about dirty jokes. We’ll experience the kind of hilarious obscenities Prison School got us used to, just like Gakuto’s epic fart in class and Kiyoshi’s hemorrhoid problems. Also, the main character in Shimoneta, Ayame, is just as obsessed with sex as Kiyoshi, Joe, Andre, Gakuto and Shingo together. She takes perversion to a whole new level, exposing the innocent high school students to a display of sexual profanities never seen before. You are guaranteed to have a blast with this outstanding school comedy with lots of ecchi in it. Ayame and Tanukichi’s pranks are as obscene and hilarious as they are didactic. After all, their purpose is to teach everyone how natural and benign sex and profanities are. Right?

It is unique in many ways and there aren’t that many shows like it out there. Hopefully, these selections will help you get some more of what you like so much about Prison School, whether it is the fan service, the jokes, the story or all of those things combined.

The anime is basically about how Natsuki Subaru, somehow warped into a parallel world of the Kingdom of Lugnica, and from there starts his life from Zero. With no money, no knowledge o fhis surroundings, no special powers or abilities, except, being able to ‘Return by Death’, an ability that allows him to travel back in time if he wounds up dead. Do remember that Re: Zero is categorized as a dark anime, so expect the unexpected and get ready to ride the rollercoaster of twists and turns that make this anime so popular!

    Rem Bio

Seiyuu Name: Inori Minase Rem is one of the housemaids that serves for Lord Roswaal L. Mathers inside the Margrave Mathers Mansion. Together with her twin sister Ram, they both are in charge of tending and taking care of the mansion. Being a twin sister with Ram, Rem bears a striking resemblance, in terms of hairstyle, outfit, and how they both speak in a synchronized way.

    Rem Highlights

    1. Cute and Innocent Appearance

Image 1 - Re Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu capture - Episode 11
    [sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Episode 11" url="" ]

As you might be aware, Rem has another twin sister named Ram, and they both share quite similar features, both wearing the same maid outfits and whatnot. The distinctive difference between the two is thanks to her hair, as Rem’s bangs cover her right eye, and Ram’s covering her left. First and foremost, who could resist that cute kawaii face of hers? Although despite her cute appearance, she can be ‘savage’ against Subaru, as in the early episodes of the series, she seemed to often criticize him for a lot of things, but the ‘ice wall’ between her and Subaru did eventually melt and somehow Subaru melted the ice in her heart, making her much cheerful in the later episodes of the series. Even when Rem’s resting facial features gives off a neutral, expressionless, and innocent vibe, it’s still quite attractive. No lies.

    2. Demon with an Angelic Face

Image 2 - Re Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu capture - Episode 9
    [sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Episode 9" url="" ]

So in the previous entry, you’d agree that Rem has a pretty cute face and overall is found attractive by many amongst fans, even more so since she has a maid outfit worn pretty much every single episode. But Rem bears a dark secret. She is actually a demon, a one-horned demon to be precise. This was first seen in episode 9 of the series, when Rem got ‘triggered’ after the attack of the Mabeast, and transforms into her demon form revealing a horn on top of her head. It was kind of an unexpected scene since her general appearance were so ‘angelic’, innocent and cute, but nonetheless, she is a badass in disguise when she went full ‘serious-mode’ on the Mabeasts. Pretty looks, and a real strong badass ability to just slaughter monsters, what a combination.

    3. Sisterhood with Ram

Image 3 - Re Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu capture - Episode 11
    [sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Episode 11" url="" ]

Now from the previous entry, it was revealed that Rem was a Demon, which naturally makes Ram, her twin sister, a demon as well. Being a one-horned demon isn’t acceptable in the demon society since demons naturally have two horns. But since Ram and Rem were born with a single horn each, it was considered a disgrace to the demon clan and must be disposed of. Following the incident, the ceremonial killing was stopped thanks to Ram’s display of powers, despite only having one horn. The demon clan village was awed and amazed by how strong and powerful Ram is at such a young age. At one point, the Witch’s Cult attacked the demon village, and in that process, Ram lost her only demon horn and with it, all her powers. Ever since the incident, Rem’s always trying very hard to do things and often feels inferior towards her sister as atonement for the thoughts she had when Ram lost her horn, as revealed in episode 11.

    4. Great with Household Tasks

Image 4 - Re Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu capture - Episode 5
    [sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Episode 5" url="" ]

From what was implied in the previous entry, Rem tries very hard to atone for what happened to Ram during their childhood, because Rem was hinted to have part of her being glad that Ram’s horns were broken off by members of the Witch’s Cult. Thanks to this, Rem is actually very efficient regarding household tasks and whatnot. It was revealed in episode 4, that Rem is very effective with chores, even better than Ram, actually. Great with cleaning, cooking, the perfect wife or waifu material. In episode 5 of the series, Ram also revealed that it was Rem who tends to everyone’s hair, and she helps her dress and gets ready for the morning which perhaps is the reason why Ram’s hair looked alike with Rem’s. Rem deeply believes that she is a replacement of Ram, and tries her best to do everything the best she could, or at least be better than Ram, in order for her not to feel useless.

    5. Unconditional Love Even when Friend-zoned

Image 5 - Re Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu capture - Episode 18
    [sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Episode 18" url="" ]

This last entry is probably the most quintessential part of Rem’s character as a whole. In a scene when Subaru is going through his mental breakdown in episode 18, Rem gave an amazing and emotional speech to ‘open’ Subaru’s eyes. “That’s why I believe. No matter what painful things happen, even when it looks like you’ll lose… When no one else in the world believes in you, when you don’t even believe in yourself… I will believe.” “If you cannot forgive yourself, for being empty and having nothing, then let us start from here, right now. Just like you started time for me when it was stopped, we will make sure the time that is stopped for you begins to move again. Let us start from here. From square one. No, from ZERO!” Thanks to Rem, Subaru came back to realization and was on his feet again. But after an emotional confession from Rem, Subaru straight up friend-zoned her on the spot saying, “I love Emilia.” And even then, Rem still remained faithful and very supportive for Subaru which just adds loads of points to Rem’s character as a whole. Because of this emotional scene, you can hear a lot of fan rage from team Rem x Subaru, claiming how big of an idiot Subaru is for dumping Rem, but who’s going to end with Subaru? Only the writers of this anime know.

    Final Thoughts

If you haven’t watched the series, and you’ve stumbled upon this article by chance, then I really implore you to start watching the series, because it’s really great. Overall, Rem is an amazing character, really. To have someone unconditionally support you in everything, lets you get away with stuff, even when the opposite party doesn’t reciprocate or feel the same way as you do, is really rare. But for team Rem fans out there, what do you reckon is the best thing from Rem? Do you agree with the points stated above? Be sure to leave them down in the comments below!
