We’ve all been there before, where we have this amazing dream set in stone for our lives but end up with constant roadblocks that slow us down. In Bremen, this is a common occurrence for the two main protagonists, but those setbacks don’t stop them from pursuing what they love most, and that’s to rock out! This slice of life music comedy is sure to raise the tempo in your life, with countless moments of amusement to keep you entertained, and a lot of life lessons that we can all learn from these two devoted characters who want nothing more than a lifestyle they can celebrate about.

With her heart pounding a mile a minute at this handsome lead singer, we start to see her interest for the band grow more and more in this wonderful continuation from Nousatsu Rock Star. Some may call them very passionate fans, while the majority see them as groupies. Is Maki one of them? Not really, but her immediate infatuation with the band is sure to manifest into something bigger real soon. This shoujo manga looks at the life of Maki, who goes through turmoil in the beginning but winds up in a world full of sweet melodies and heartfelt emotions. Music can surely do that to you over time, and Maki is about to go on an adventure she’s never been before. Yuzu and Nino have this really nice youthful love connection that really keeps you interested in the story, but you’re really curious as to whether Nino will ever get her song to reach her first love Momo with all that’s happening around her. It’s a story of twists and turns that’s sure to turn up the volume on your imagination.

Mitsuki truly has a knack for singing, but due to a severe tumor in her throat, it has prevented her from pursuing her passion any further. The guardians angels weren’t having any of that, and so one day two shinagami appear in front of her and grant her a temporary release from her serious illness, and to provide the gears to launch her much sought after singing career. This touching story is bound to strike a chord in your heart, as you’ll be lured into a world that has its moments of sadness, but then springs you back up into moments of pleasure. Tanemura Arina is very well known in Japan for creating very touching stories that not only embark on love and relationships, but also many aspects of life. In the case of Full Moon wo Sagashite, Arina really tries to put the reader in Mitsuki’s shoes, as she has to go through so many painful ordeals only to be released of her pains by magical spirits. It truly lifts you away because you can really relate to Mitsuki as she truly had a passion to become a global sensation, but major setbacks hindered her progress. As you read on through the manga, you’ll continue to see more and more inspiring moments that we encourage you to pick up and read in this romantic fantasy musical masterpiece.

Kaoru just hasn’t had an opportunity to live a stable life as he’s traveled from school to school, and city to city with his family. This exciting manga is sure to have you rocking out once you dig deep into the story, so check it out.

With the two clearly in severe internal pain and suffering, they somehow come together to create a close bond but focus their intent on violent rebellion as their form of release. However, before any of this can escalate the two come to realize how important their lives are, and aspire to live instead of create harm. While the premise of the manga isn’t solely based around music, it does seem to play a different melody in your heart once you read through it. You’re constantly thrown into a whirlwind of emotions as we see two people who have deep scars embedded within, and just want to let it all out. This adaptation from the original novel created by bestselling novelist Gong Ji-young, takes a look at two youths who initially sang a bitter song but over time they embrace their sorrows and tragedy to create a touching tale that’s sure to grab your heart strings and play with them a lot.

Youji Itami is an otaku, a self-proclaimed one at that. So when an inter-dimensional force of dragons and trolls invade his world during the time of a convention, he is quick to throw himself in the fray, putting all his RPG knowledge to the test. He proves himself so useful during this initial battle that he receives a lot of honors and is later tasked with leading a special recon team into the fantastical world that lies beyond the gate. Gate does an impressive job immersing the viewer wholly into the fantasy world that stands opposite modern day society. It does this in a number of ways. One it efficiently and effectively develops each of the main characters, who represent various ideologies, and thus gives insights into different cultures. Secondly, it shows the inner workings (the government, religious factions, and military) of the kingdoms that Japan is trying to defeat/negotiate with. By doing this, we receive a much a grander picture of how this entire world runs and functions. It’s very akin to a cultural exchange program, at least by the time diplomatic solutions start being suggested.

Kazuma is young, lonely, and a shut in. One day, upon forcing himself out his room, he dies in an extremely awkward manner. Due to his relative youth, the goddess Aqua gives him the option to continue life in an alternate universe. He can even bring an ultimate item of his choosing to make sure things work at. Well, she happens to present on this information while completely humiliating Kazuma, and in an act of spite Kazuma declares that he wants her to accompany. To the higher ups of godhood, this request is valid and so Konosuba begins. Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo!, aka Konosuba, presents a glorious fantasy world that’s brimming with life and then throws us into the outskirts. Basically, we realize quite quickly that neither Kazuma nor Aqua is quite suited for adventure. Thus, they end up working rather ordinary jobs and living in less than quality standards (a stable). Bringing some light into the world are the two companions that join this unlucky duo. However, they prove themselves to be equally as useless. Overall, Konosuba presents a fantastical world that gets flipped on its head as four inept adventurers try to make a living.

In a time long ago, the destructive powers of the great dragon Bahamut threatened the realms of the humans, demons, and gods. In a massive battle that invoked a combined effort from each race, Bahamut was successfully locked away. The key to Bahamut’s imprisonment was then split between the god’s realm and the demon’s realm. Our story begins when the key in the god’s realm has suddenly been stolen. Mappa’s 2014 Shingeki no Bahamut: Genesis takes viewers down a visual masterpiece. We’re thrown into a medieval fantasy that has every type of mystical being you could hope for. There’s magic, swashbuckling, historical and mythological figures, as well as massive amounts of deception. Consistently, we are being brought face to face with some incredible setting or monster and the fight scene that ensues is always one of longevity and delight. It truly is an ode to fantasy lovers. It’s one drawback is that it provides such a massive world that it can only give a slight glimpse into the lives of some of the more imposing characters within its 12-episode run.

Have you ever wondered how Hell is ran? Obviously there is quite a bit of traffic going down in the underworld and for people to find their correct place in the afterlife, things cannot be left to anarchy. That’s why there’s Hoozuki, chief deputy to Lord Enma. Hoozuki no Reitetsu follows the management styles of this chief deputy as he makes sure that hell is a well-oiled, smooth-running bureaucracy. One of the best things about this show and what it does extraordinarily well is intermix Japanese mythology into its storyline. It’s not the only show to throw around beings from legends and folklore, but it clearly took the time to nail down the characters. Rather than simply invoking the name of a hero or god to appease mythology lovers, Hoozuki no Reitetsu revolves around these characters and utilizes its supernatural setting to its upmost. The only thing you might find strange is how similar hell is to your office space.

Not ten thousand, but thirty thousand gamers are suddenly trapped inside a popular MMORPG known as Elder Tale. They are not able to log out and they must learn how to survive in this dangerous fantasy world that has up to that point been only a virtual ‘escape’. Think Sword Art Online, but better. We won’t have to deal with an extremely overpowered protagonist here and there’s less focus on a single guy wooing every girl he has one-on-one time with. What Log Horizon does exceptionally well is propel us into a universe that is vast and requires a collaborative effort among characters. In doing so, characters take on relatively niche roles that are both standard and comforting. However, the particular role of puppet master, the behind the scenes mastermind, is actually played by our hero, Shiroe. This actually allows the other characters more time to shine as they excel at their relative skills, which are put to perfect use by Shiroe.

We’re all probably familiar with Berserk and this is the one series that gets to break the rule of beginning in the last five years. Its implementation of CG, separate story arc, and overall time gap from its 1997 predecessor gave way to an exception. Considering the massive amount of monsters, hectic swordfights, and epic story; it’s hard not to put Berserk on any type of fantasy list. Berserk, more than any anime on this list, captures the idea of a dark fantasy. Rather than act as an escape from mundane reality, Berserk presents landscapes that are dreary and haunting and characters who are highly damaged and complex. In this world, everything feels like it’s cast in some shadow, as it becomes increasingly difficult to decide what’s right and what’s wrong. All you can do is hold on as Guts heaves his hunk of iron into countless ghouls, and perhaps save a few innocents if he feels like it. The only issue you might find with it, is that CG isn’t your cup of tea.

No Game No Life follows the adventures of the siblings Sora and Shiro as they find themselves thrown into a completely different world, a world where everything is decided by games. Luckily, Sora and Shiro are actually god-like gamers with incredible reflexes, inexhaustible strategies, and impressive teamwork. In other words, they have really just been taken to heaven and are ready to ascend to an entire new status. Surreal on a completely different level than anything else on this list, No Game No Life invites its viewers to experience a visual feast. Few shows have the ability to completely consume the audience simply through the setting and animation styling, but that is exactly what No Game No Life accomplishes. It astounds you, and gives you an entire world that seems like a playground for your imagination to run wild with. Not only that, but each game that is played is executed with grace as strategies clash and mental capacities are tested.

Set in world that is modeled after the European Middle Ages, Nanatsu no Taizai follows Elizabeth, the third princess of the Kingdom of Liones, as she searches for the subset of Holy Knights that had been deemed The Seven Deadly Sins for their betrayal against the kingdom. Why is the princess looking for them? Well, after The Seven Deadly Sins had been suppressed, the rest of the Holy Knights had a little coup of their own. Maybe in a year or two Nanatsu no Taizai will be able to claim the top spot on a fantasy list. It has all the components for a traditional shounen in a fantasy world and it does them exceptionally well. It’s a case of presentation and pace beating out everything else. It has a diverse cast of powerful and interesting characters, who each offer a certain charisma that will attract its own following. The world is vast with plenty of visual appeal. No surprise their as A-1 Pictures steers the project. The story might be a little traditional in its search for the ultimate crew, but more than makes up for it with certain twists and its well developed characters. The only thing this show is truly missing is a second season to further explore the nuances of the world it has set up.

Re:Zero follows Subaru Natsku as he gets thrown into a crazy fantasy world. This world says hello by having him beaten to a pulp by a group of thugs. Thankfully, a mysterious girl by the name of Satella comes to the rescue. To repay her kindness, Subaru says he will help her find her ‘insignia,’ which she explains was stolen. Well, they find it, they find themselves in over their heads, and they both die. Then Subaru reawakens to the group of thugs once more. This anime is one of the few to have made an actual impact on the anime community. There are several reasons for this. One, the character designs are stellar and its simply enjoyable to watch people interact even in a relatively plain-looking setting. Two, there is a good amount of action from the get go to keep the people on their feet and excited to see what happens next. Three, the story does not dig itself into a hero who can save everything plotline. The third reason in particular sets the show apart. Usually, you would expect the ability to revive as a power that leads to happy endings. However, in this series, this power forcibly deconstructs Subaru into an entirely different character and creates massive struggles for himself and the people he comes into contact with.

Scattered about the world are deadly labyrinths, known as Dungeons, which hold magical treasures beyond the imagination. These Dungeons are ruled over by supernatural Djinns, who will give their power to anyone who conquers the impossible maze. This granting of power acts as the Djinn’s vote of confidence for the victor to be king. As a result, many people with grand dreams dare the labyrinths in hopes of achieving riches and power. One lucky big dreamer, Alibaba, happens to achieve such a feat while befriending Aladdin, a young magician who might be one of the legendary Magi, magicians who lead kings to their empires. Magi tops this list due to the world it has been able to flesh out over two seasons. Yes, it basically doubles the length of most other entries, but that’s no reason to not celebrate the vibrant and magical world that Magi creates. It seamlessly blends adventure, action, magic, and humor into one incredibly interesting story. Each character we are introduced to has a story and the creators do a great job giving life to everyone. Even characters of minor importance have personal quirks and are developed quite thoroughly. As a result, every battle, whether one of fists or ideologies, has a certain undeniable attraction.

No route Who is Vanderwood? Well, it seems you haven’t played 707’s route yet, but that’s okay. Mary Vanderwood belongs to the same intelligence agency as 707, where she acts in a position higher than 707, but appears to have a similar skill set to the hacker in regards to tracking and security infiltration. She often has to check in on 707’s progress on his work and will clean up 707’s messy apartment while checking in, so 707 has taken to calling Vanderwood his “maid.” The intelligence agency that employs her is no joke. Their clients are known to even kill agents who fail on their assigned missions. We don’t know all the details, but Vanderwood takes these threats very seriously. Although 707 finds Vanderwood to be annoying, if we look closely, we can see that Vanderwood is actually looking out for him. She really is a good person after all. Be it the relentless trolling 707 puts her through, the fact that she will clean up the disaster area that is 707’s apartment, or that she is in such a dangerous profession, we really do wish that Vanderwood could be saved and have her own happily ever after. What made her join the intelligence agency anyway?

Casual route Yoosung Kim, who’s name means “meteor” in Korean, is a your everyday normal Korean college student: shy, easy to please, and a little on the M side. Yoosung is also addicted to an online game called LOLOL, leaving him with constant dark circles and little time to actually attend college. A little lost in the world, Yoosung has tried to join countless social clubs at his classes, but he has already given up on his chosen major and hasn’t found he wants to do with his life. It’s easy to identify with Yoosung, because of our addiction to Myst Mess. In Yoosung’s route, we learn that his addiction to gaming stems from attempting to cope with the death of his cousin, Rika. Yoosung admired and loved Rika. After her death, Yoosung was shocked and fell into depression. Because of all of the unanswered questions about Rika’s life shortly before her death, he still has yet to find closure. Yoosung often confuses you with Rika, and will constantly say how alike you are to her. No matter your age, Yoosung is the younger kouhai (junior) that we want to save from all of his confusion, anger, and depression.

No route The view we get of Rika is pretty conflicting. She founded the RFA, and most of the members admire her and are thankful to her for bringing them all together. The often-absent V was and is still in love with her. In flashbacks, we see many sides to Rika: from kind and cheerful to paranoid and self-destructive. We have a lot of photos in our album of Rika smiling or otherwise bring joy to one of the member’s lives; however, she is hiding mental anxiety that she desperately tries to hide from the other RFA members. Her paranoia gets the best of her, and she ends up brainwashing an innocent boy and injuring the love of her life. Much like us, we learn that Rika was on a mission to save the RFA members from all of their problems, but became misguided by her own anxieties. If there was a Rika route, we would be all aboard for saving this girl from herself.

Casual route Jaehee Kang is Jumin Han’s professional assistant, and boy, does Jumin put this girl through hell. Jaehee is a cautious and serious person, and her voice sounds like the announcement voice in the airport. Even though she will voice her aggravations with all the extra work Jumin gives her, she is very dependable and completes every task with competence. Jaehee is the epitome of professional, except when she is fan-girling over Zen and lets a little emotion slip through. Fan-girling with Jaehee is truly a bonding experience. Despite being a darn good secretary, two long years of overworking is finally starting to take its toll on Jaehee, and you can easy see that the girl is not happy. Maybe all the guys are a little too eccentric for your tastes, or you can empathize with her on having an over-demanding boss. We’re not saying Honey is overly demanding or anything. We’re just saying we can empathize, and we want to save her from her stressful life. Everyone deserves a little rest and relation, after all! Come, Jaehee, into this comforting embrace.

No route Elizabeth 3rd is Jumin’s cat, and Jumin treats Elizabeth 3rd like royalty. Although Elizabeth 3rd loves him, Jumin is a little too attentive and overbearing. Jumin becomes excessively paranoid about losing Ellie, so he heartlessly locks her up in a cage. Still, we totally get why Jumin admires this white, fluffy goddess and treats her as his girlfriend. In fact, we also want to have Elizabeth 3rd as our own and give her all the pampering that she deserves. She might not talk, but she has a history with Rika and V, and we can see behind those beautiful blue eyes there is a hidden past that led Rika to give her over to Jumin. If we could, we want to heal Elizabeth 3rd of all her worries and live in cat paradise with her.

Casual route Zen is a musical actor who comes on strong from the get-go, and is, inevitably the easiest and perhaps the most cliché route. Unlike many otome games, Zen is actually just a budding actor and has yet to have his big break, but he already has a number of fans, including RFA member Jaehee Kang. Zen is very much a big brother type of character who, even if you don’t choose his route, will give you advice and support you in everything you do. With a voice that melts, Zen is especially kind to all the younger RFA members but easily gets frustrated with Jumin, who reminds him of his family who betrayed him. Zen earned his heart of gold after running away from home as a teenager to follow his dream. Although Zen tends to be narcissistic and takes way too many selfies (to our delight), he is wary that people only care about his looks. Because of this, he looks at a person’s personality when he chooses to make friends or, if you choose his route, girlfriends. Along Zen’s route, disaster strikes as a spoiled she-devil, name Echo Girl, who has planned to ruin Zen’s career after he rejects her feelings for him. If anything, we want to save him from this Korean drama scenario as fast as possible.

Deep route Jumin is a chaebol, or a rich kid, who grew up in wealth and is looking to take over his father’s company in the future. Jumin loves his cat and isn’t very attuned to the life and language of “commoners.” Many times, Jumin is hilariously clueless, but sometimes he will indulge in the other members’ shenanigans. Although Jumin can be a little oblivious to other people’s emotions and difficulties, he tends to look at everything in an objective light and gives a different perspective in nearly all the routes, including his own. As Jumin doesn’t prioritize romantic relationships and instead prioritizes work and his cat, his taste in women or even if he is interested in women or people in general is all an unknown, until you can partake in his route. Much like Zen, Jumin is worried people are only interested in his money and prefers being around people he can trust, including his lovable cat Elizabeth 3rd. Considering his father has had numerous romantic partners, including notable gold-diggers, Jumin is naturally distrusting of women who wish to date him. He easily slips in and out of being possessive, wanting to control everything in his life, including you and Elizabeth 3rd. We don’t know about you, but we hear Foreigner’s “I Want to Know What Love Is” in the back of our brains when we play Jumin’s route.

No route Unknown is shrouded in mystery. He brought you to the RFA and then suddenly he appears as the enemy! Appearing a little unstable, Unknown has a personal vendetta against the RFA, especially for 707. We soon learn that Unknown is actually 707’s twin brother! Otome gods, please just let us go! His real name is Saeran Choi, and because he had poor health as a child, 707 left him behind in order to work as an intelligence agent, earning enough money to guarantee Saeran’s protection. During their time apart, however, Saeran was brainwashed to hate 707. We enter the story with Saeran completely lost in the world, completely controlled by a strange religious cult, and completely in need of our saving! The fact that we can’t play a route with him as our main man just makes the craving that much more fierce. This poor lost boy deserves a good ending!

No route V is a talented photographer who fell in love with Rika. Together they founded RFA, and V acts as the group’s leader. V is often absent from the messenger for unknown reasons and is even harder to get in contact with. We learn that V has many secrets, including secrets about what caused Rika’s disappearance. In the beginning, most of the members think well of V but throughout all of the routes, the members begin to distrust V and question his motives and leadership. As the story progresses, we learn more about the mental issues that Rika faced, leading her to injure V’s eyes. Even though this spells the end of his career, V continues to love Rika wholeheartedly. He wants to save Rika and all the other members from her insanity. V endures emotional abuse from Rika and takes on all the other members’ animosity by himself in numerous acts of self-sacrifice. We can only hope and pray for the chance to save this minty-haired, half-blind saint. With any luck, V and Unknown may have routes in the future!

Deep route 707 is a talented hacker and the de facto head of security for the RFA. He has a cheerful and playful personality and likes to make a lot of silly jokes and mess with the other members. Behind that ever-happy presence, 707 is hiding a lot of secrets and lonliness. As an intelligence agent, 707 keeps a healthy distance between himself and others in the RFA. 707 is worried that anyone close to him can easily become targets of his agency’s enemies. The closer you try to get to 707, the further he will push you away. Many answers to Myst Mess’s mysteries come out during 707’s route. We learn that 707’s real name is Saeyong Choi. 707 has been gifted with computers from a young age and separated from his twin brother in order to protect him from his dangerous profession. As with most of the routes, you have to soothe his anxieties and keep him from reliving past mistakes. 707 will often fight to keep himself locked up inside and enjoys that he can have a fun personality, even if it is fake. What we want, though, is the real Saeyoung, his regrets, and his imperfections! We want it all!
