Who it caters to

For those who have spent a good chunk of time with the Hyperdimension Neptunia series will feel right at home with this one, as all of the controls and battle system are intact along with some added features and graphical updates to satisfy any fan of the series. As with any RPG, you’ll be spending most of your time exploring, collecting items, battling a wide array of monsters, and grinding your way through countless hours of entertaining gameplay. The Hyperdimension series debuted in Japan in 2010, then made its way stateside sometime after the initial release. Superdimension Neptune vs Sega Hard Girls is a spin-off of the original franchise, which retains a lot of the cast from other titles, and is a crossover with the Sega Hard Girls series.

What to expect

image-2-superdimension-neptune-vs-sega-hard-girls-capture
Superdimension Neptune vs Sega Hard Girls is an incredibly fun and wacky RPG that takes place in the world of Gamindustri, which is a pun of the term game industry, and generally, pokes fun at RPG titles in a humorous fashion. There’s a lot to explore in this crossover series as now two spectacular games have now been fused into one to create a new experience, which will have you playing for hours on end. As mentioned earlier, a lot of new battle mechanics have been thrown into the mix to provide players with a fresh new experience going in, but the way in which you fight in battle still remains the same overall. If you enjoy a turn based type of combat with the freedom to move your character freely around the battlefield to create tactical positioning, then Superdimension Neptune vs Sega Hard Girls is sure to provide all the thrills you need. Dungeons in the game have seen a vast improvement over past titles, now allowing you to dash around freely to get to your designated location a lot faster, and ropes are now available which grant you new areas to discover and collect rare items. In addition, there’s the ability to wall climb, crawl through holes and spaces spread throughout all locations, and symbol attacks which grant you first strike in battle. The world and Grand Library is where you’ll be spending a lot of your time in, as it acts as the hub from which you can travel to 4 past eras such as the Sega Saturn Era, Mega Drive Era, Game Gear Era, and Dreamcast Era. For any Sega fan, this game is right up your alley so look forward to seeing a lot of references dispersed throughout the game.

Story

image-3-superdimension-neptune-vs-sega-hard-girls-capture
Something has gone terribly wrong at the Grand Library, which holds the history of the worlds within its shelves. Many legends have stated that anyone who is to tamper with these books, may have a major impact on the past and all may be rewritten. IF, the main protagonist, hears of this library and makes her way there to find out more. Yearning to understand just what’s happening, she encounters Histoire, a tiny librarian who tells her of the grim situation that’s transpiring. The many books of history have been disappearing off the shelves and no one is sure as to why it’s happening, so now IF has been given the responsibility to find out more details behind this mysterious occurrence, and to find out the truth. She must now team up with the Sega Hard Girls and CPU’s to uncover more details behind this unfortunate event and restore history before it’s too late.

Gameplay

image-4-superdimension-neptune-vs-sega-hard-girls-capture
Superdimension Neptune vs Sega Hard Girls is packed full of action and well-scripted dialogue to keep you on the edge of your seat for hours. As you start out in the Grand Library, Histoire goes through an incredibly detailed breakdown of all of the features that you’ll be using throughout the game, as well as various other options that you’ll get to explore more of once you pick up the game. We had a blast playing through Superdimension Neptune vs Hard Girls because there’s so much to collect and find, which oftentimes leads you toward really surprising rewards, and provide buffs for your character. Let’s take a closer look at some of the gameplay features that really stood out, and that will most surely help you along your journey.

Dungeons | Action Gauge

image-5-superdimension-neptune-vs-sega-hard-girls-capture
As aforementioned, dungeons have always played a role in the franchise but now you’re able to perform a variety of new actions which only add more excitement to your experience. When you access missions from Histoire in the Grand Library, you then take a time warp to a specific era where you’ll have to battle a variety of monsters which eventually will lead you to an event. An event marker is a diamond shaped symbol which is typically located at the end of a dungeon and acts as a completion of that particular story phase. In previous Hyperdimension titles, much of your movement was very restricted and didn’t really allow the player the freedom to move around in the environment. Now you’re gifted with wall climbing, traversing over gaps with ropes, dashing and crawling. All of these really come in handy now since much of the dungeons feel a lot more expansive and not locked to a particular area. Of course, there are still the invisible walls, but they honestly don’t take away from the enriching experience you get from all of the wanderings you get to do.
image-6-superdimension-neptune-vs-sega-hard-girls-capture
The action gauge is going to play a major role as you make your way through various dungeons in the many eras, so we’ll dive deeper to give you a heads up. The action gauge consists of three colored areas, blue, green, and red. All of these are tied to certain actions you can perform in a battle sequence such as moving, attacking, utilizing skills, and using items. As these are performed your gauge increases in small increments which act as a reminder that your turn is ending, so paying close attention to the gauge is vital. The movement takes up a large chunk of the gauge so figuring out your positioning beforehand is essential, as well as planning your attacks carefully. Once your meter hits red, however, that’s a sign that you’ve overcommitted which can turn into a deadly counterattack by the enemy since your turns are delayed depending on how much of the red gauge you used. So our advice is to try and stay within the blue and green areas of the gauge to fully maximize your damage output, but also allow your characters to take their turns faster. You can attack the opponent using the X button, acquire items with square, use skills with triangle, jump with circle, and defend with the R button. One thing to note is that once you’ve committed to using the defend option, it will max out your gauge and your turn will end so be sure to think ahead before doing so.

Missions | Gems | Fever Time | EXE Drive

Missions are what you’ll be focusing on a lot of in the game, which ties in with dungeons since that’s where most take place. These missions come with certain levels of effect rates known as ‘History Effect Rates’ which are indicated by stars on the bottom of the mission window. Once you’ve cleared a mission, a cleared stamp will appear next to the effect rates and your counter will start to decrease. The counter is indicated by a small number next to your mission, and so as you clear missions that number will decrease. Once it reaches one, a small eye symbol will appear next to the mission and if you fail to complete it in a timely manner, it will disappear. If you decide to retire a mission, it may also disappear, but the count of other missions will not be affected. Gems play an integral role in battles since they provide some serious buffs to your character and can seriously turn the tide back in your favor in mere seconds. They appear randomly throughout the battlefield so you’re never sure which one you’ll get, and some require special abilities to reach them. There are six gems in total, all of which come with their respective buffs which we’ll go over: (See image below)
image-7-superdimension-neptune-vs-sega-hard-girls-capture
Fever Time is an amazing buff that grants the player a 10% increase in stats and prevents your enemies from having a turn. The rainbow gem is a game changer because there may be times when you find yourself surrounded by a horde of powerful enemies and your HP is slowly disappearing, but then the rainbow gem shows up and you clear the entire battlefield with ease. This truly adds an explosive comeback feature that not many other RPG’s have, which really makes those tense situations feel more satisfying once you’re lucky enough to grab one.
image-8-superdimension-neptune-vs-sega-hard-girls-capture
The EXE Drive is a character’s special attack which can be accessed in the skill menu and unleashes an incredibly powerful attack that is accompanied with impressive visuals. You’ll need to have the EXE Drive learned before being able to use it, but once you do have it you’ll deplete your entire fever gauge during fever time. So if you want to take down a big boss then be sure to utilize this feature, otherwise just use fever time to take out your enemies one by one.

Formations | Flame Awakening | Activating a Sega Hard Girl

Formations in RPG games aren’t too frequent since most actions take place in a pre-designed format. Superdimension Neptune has granted the player with that cool feature which actually provides certain buffs depending on what formation you decide to use. Formations are learned as you progress through the game’s funny story, which then can be swapped in and out of at any time. It’s great that the game allows you to be more versatile in your battle approach so that depending on where you are in the game, certain formations may benefit more than the other. One example is the gem formation which we loved a lot since that increases the likelihood of powerful gems to show up during battle and could potentially earn a comeback in dire times. We encourage you to come up with your own tactics when playing to create your own unique experience.
image-9-superdimension-neptune-vs-sega-hard-girls-capture
Flame Awakening is a feature that allows IF to transform into her awakening state, which can be performed by using 20% of your max SP. Her awakening stats are added to the basic stats which greatly buffs her attack power and special moves. Segami is your partner in crime in this game and she too comes with her own buff known as Sega Hard Girl Activation, where 20% of her max SP is used and allows her to take on the form of one of the Sega Girls. In this state, the Sega Hard Girl’s stats are added to Segami’s along with her skill set. Segami typically only comes with heal and other learned abilities in her default state, but she can access her EXE Drive while in her activated state. All of these great features honestly brought this game to life as we kept playing through trying to come up with ways to take down our opponents with different formations, lily assisting, optimizing charge attacks, and more.

Honey's Gameplay Consensus:

Superdimension Neptune vs Sega Hard Girls is like watching an anime series and getting to play through it all with action-packed battle cinematics, witty dialogue, and constantly discovering new items along the way. While the game allows for greater exploration and creativity, the open world experience gets shot down by all of the invisible walls that have plagued the series for years. Of course, we weren’t expecting to have an Elder Scrolls type of world, though that would’ve been simply amazing, but it would’ve been nice to create slightly bigger dungeons. Perhaps where things balance out is the actual era’s themselves, since various missions are scattered throughout each of the four locations, and there is a large chunk of missions to clear. Some little small gripes that we had with the game was that when you go into the config settings, you have the option to change voiceovers which is splendid, but these settings are never actually saved so every time you reboot the game you have to go back and set them again. This was a little cumbersome since you want to hop right back into the game with your preferred settings, but can’t do that because everything needs to be reentered. The overlapping in music after your character has leveled up was overbearing because it gradually got louder which turned us off, so we had to once again go back to the settings to set everything straight. Despite these issues, there really isn’t much else that really stood out as unsatisfactory, because most of the time you’ll be so concentrated on beating up enemies and collecting rare items that you’ll forget about it all after several hours.

Honey's Pros:

  • Incredibly detailed tutorial!
  • Fun and charming music to keep you entertained during your travels.
  • Lots of versatility and creativity pertaining to battles.
  • Very funny dialogue between characters, and uses a ton of game references.
  • Lots of exploration.
  • Clean graphics and great cinematics during battle scenes.

Honey's Cons:

  • Having to always configure settings was a pain.
  • Overlapping music during level up screen was too loud.
  • Invisible Wall Syndrome.
  • Would’ve liked to have seen more expansive dungeons.

Introduction

Sometimes, we as otakus can not help but look back to that (hopefully) distant day when we started watching anime. The journey has been long but amazing, with all those memorable characters and great stories. They can seem so real to us, that we fantasize about sharing their daily life. By now, we know a lot about Japan thanks to anime, so we can get through if we visit the country, right? If you are lucky enough to have visited Japan for up to 6 months, you might be ready to assure that it is the best of the best. The streets are clean and people are friendly. You also had the chance to sleep on a futon, wearing traditional clothes, eating ramen, going to karaoke, and shopping at the biggest anime stores in the world. Ok, all of that is great. But what happens when you come to Japan for a longer stay? A lot of people have suffered from what is known as a cultural shock because, oh surprise! The beautiful country that is portrayed in anime is a caricature of the real Japan. And let’s be fair here, Japan is a beautiful country. The thing is that there are several differences between the idealized representations of anime and reality. Wanna pick up some of those?

[ad_top2 class="mt40"]

The anime life!

Pokemon origins
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Pokemon origins Episode 2" url="" ]

A lot of anime start in the same fashion: the main character wakes up, rushes down the stairs, eats breakfast (or just grabs a toast) and runs towards the school. He/she has a crush on the popular guy/girl, who is unbelievably hot, talented, intelligent and rich. He/she also has a gang of friends as companions for their adventures. And then something exciting happens. Sometimes the life of the protagonist becomes amazing because of a great encounter with a club or new friend. On other occasions, the supernatural comes to life! Or maybe it’s a combination of both. Anyway, on the school realm, we usually have a safe and clean space where the protagonist can participate in all sorts of activities. And oh, those summer and winter camps! Who has not fancied their favorite anime when a good ghost story or a push to the romance comes around? How about the traditional festivals? (matsuri). Then, we get Christmas (which is focused on couples) and Valentine’s day with chocolates. The worst thing that can happen is to be rejected by the crush in turn, but hey, your friends and/or family will be there to support you when that happens. And when you work? Well, your workmates will also be there for your adventures in the office. Technology is everywhere, and both human and machines will be efficient enough to make the world go round. And when you come back home, you will be received by your lovely wife and children. Or, if you are a woman, you will count on a devoted husband who works hard for you.

The real life

earth-girl-arjuna-capture
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Earth Girl Arjuna Episode 6" url="" ]

We have mentioned in past articles that Japan still has a hierarchical society, which is directly reflected in their school and working system. Japan is also obsessed with quality, thus its emphases on education. The type and status of the school you attend influences the type of University you will be accepted in… which in turn, will influence which company will most likely hire you. That is why parents are so… determined about their kids education. And that is why teaching is among the most respected professions in Japan. So, sorry my dear otakus. Teachers might be funny in anime and perhaps a bit in real life too, but they are definitely not amateurs, and will try to form a connection with their students in order to provide a better and more integral care. Classes for Japanese kids last around 6 hours, but once they are finished, everyone heads to their clubs, lessons… or the parents’ favorite, the cram school. Especially in the last years of high school, these cram schools are essential to pass the University exams. Sometimes you have seen glimpses of this in anime. Cram schools are those sadly looking square rooms where students hit the books for hours. Also, English language schools are favored, as globalization has been taken seriously by the Japanese government. This means Japanese students have a very busy life schedule starting when they are toddlers. One common strategy to make them learn as much as they can is to start their education earlier and earlier… although there are several scientific studies that have disproved this method. Parents are simply too worried that their child will be left behind, as competition is high in Japan. All that pressure builds up inside the students, of course. Many Japanese are afraid of becoming a failure for their parents and their society. Do you remember the name that is given to people who fail the University entrance examination? They are called ronin, the same name samurais without master used back in the Edo period. A lot of anime portrait ronins as comical guys who somehow manage to enter to the University and conquer a gorgeous girl on the way. Reality is not always that merciful, though. Ronins sometimes go to special camps that take them away from society only to hit the books for months in a row. They get part time jobs to pay their special school fees and are extremely worried about failing again. So, congratulations! You made it to University! Although you will be as busy as before, you will get one step ahead of others to find the job of your dreams, find a lovely match, and raise a family! Um… not precisely. The Japanese government has found that nearly 40% of the population between 20 and 30 years are not interested in having a romantic relationship. The lower their economic level, the less interested they are. Once again, the race for success is the main aim for the Japanese. A romantic partner is seen as an obstacle and not as the reason to live usually represented in anime. Let’s suppose you graduate and start at a company. You also find someone to marry thanks to the intervention of your family, a speed dating restaurant, the internet, or just by sheer luck. It is not an arranged marriage, you chose your spouse! Surely it will work, right? Well, according to some polls, around half of the marriages in Japan are sex-less marriages. The reason for the guys is that they are too tired due to work, while the reason for the ladies is that “sex is bothersome”. And don’t even start me on interracial couples. The pressures society put on them sometimes are too much to bear. This situation is slowly changing, but perhaps the main barrier such couples face is their own mutual incompatibilities, which are not so obvious until they have known each other for years and/or share a life together. Thus, the typical anime where star crossed lovers conquer everything is, once again, a beautiful tale. The reality of Japanese marriage is usually more monotonous and challenging. Let’s not forget about work. In some aspects, it is a follow up of your studies. Especially in large corporations, you have little free time, and as a newbie, you will be paid little. Japanese start low from the basics and rely on their senpais to teach them the tricks of the profession. You will also have fun times with your workmates out of obligation. You are expected to have a linear path, especially if you are a man. So… a change of career? Something like what happened in Uchuu kyoudai, where the salary man that is our protagonist is accepted in the national spatial training program out of the blue? Nope, that is very unusual stuff. Let’s not forget that there is this perception that Japan is safe, clean and full of technology. Of course most of the country is known for having a higher level of safety, but crime can occur. Especially if you are a woman (sadly). Some dangerous areas include Kabukicho, Ueno, Roppongi (who would say that with such a luxurious building as the Roppongi Hills?), Kamagasaki, Shinsekai in Osaka, Susukino in Sapporo, and Nakasu in Fukuoka. Most of them are entertainment districts that should be avoided at night. Yet anime usually depicts the great cities as fabulous utopias with skyscrapers, modern transportation and characters dressed up in the latest fashion. Sailor Moon Crystal did a good job in representing Minato-ku, the rich neighborhoods surrounding Tokyo Tower. Surprise, surprise! Usagi and her friends are from a middle-upper class. Her house is too big for a common salary man, and her boyfriend Mamoru has a neat apartment with the famous Tower on view. Even the smallest of apartments in Japan has a costly rent, my dear otakus, because the population is too big and space is scarce. The other side of the wealth is Sanya, a neighborhood where the poorest people in Tokyo live. They usually are elders, long gone from the work force and relying on poorly paid jobs or begging to survive. And guess what? Japan also has their “invisible people”. Those who do “dirty” jobs (like leather factory workers) and should not mix with the rest of the population. Their descendants, still called burakumin, populate poor neighborhoods not far away from the cosmopolitan ones. Finally, if you are in the countryside, you will find a totally different world. A lush, fruitful world with huts, rice fields and people who might not understand English. This is not a place where you can play Pokemon Go. Maybe the people will be friendly with you if they notice you are a tourist, but try to move in and you will find it hard at first to fit into societies that have been entangled together from past generations.

Somewhere in between?

5 Centimeters Per Second 02
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Byousoku 5 Centimeter" url="" ]

This article does not pretend to attack anime as a misconception of real life. Anime is fiction and entertainment after all. Our aim is to go a step further and show contrasts in the real daily life in Japan that are not depicted in most anime. In such tales of heroes and enemies, can we find glimpses of the real Japan portrayed in anime? Well, of course there are. If there is something Studio Ghibli has been recognized for, has been on their realistic capture of Japanese people, mainly children. We know this films play with fantasy, but they have a good basis on characters that you could meet in real life. Remember that Chihiro from Spirited Away was based on a real girl, for example. This girl is displeased with regular life, just like Chihiro in the first part of the film. And how about Shizuku from A Whisper of the heart? Her family lives in a typical Japanese department which, of course, is not luxurious. The story is also more into the slice of life, as Shizuku is feeling the pressure of having to deliver good exam results vs achieving her dream as a novelist. Other good and recent examples are on the works by Makoto Shinkai. Although he has done sci-fi and also fantasy, he tends to mix them with daily life situations that every Japanese can identify with. It is not just the realism of the natural environments or the housing and transportation. The situations of bullying in schools, the family traditions and the country side life have some glimpses of reality, as shown in 5 Minutes per Second, The Garden of Words and the most recent Your Name. Japanese find them enchanting and that is part of the reason of his rising success.

Final thoughts

So there you go, my dear otakus. Real life can be more challenging than what you see in the daily anime life. So, if you are in love with Japan and are planning to come for a long season, inform yourself well and get prepared. And of course, enjoy. Once the initial shock goes away, everything is gonna be ok :) And please do tell us, which aspect of daily life in anime do you find must strange? Don’t forget that we are open to all your comments. See you soon!

Skip Beat! is oftentimes referred to as THE shoujo anime like Naruto is referred to as THE shounen anime. It isn’t the case that they are the best of their genre or that they are the most representative of them, but many of us have been inducted into the respective genres through these anime that we tend to use them as a rite of passage for our friends who are new to anime. Skip Beat follows the revenge story of Kyouko Mogami as she is jilted and betrayed by the lover whom she slaved away for. In a classic move similar to every chick flick ever, she enters the entertainment industry to crush his dreams underfoot. This anime has many elements that a shoujo anime would, but at the same time breaks the mold in its own way. There are no harem of guys chasing after her. Neither is she a helpless damsel that requires a knight in shining armor. Kyouko does things her way, and she’ll be damned if he gets away with it. Though she gets support and help from some people along the way, it is her effort and her grit that gets her to where she does by the end of the anime. Only the anime that can show such a role model of a female can be placed on this list. So what can match up to an iconic show like Skip Beat? Well hopefully these 6 can! Join us as we count down the 6 Anime Like Skip Beat!

[Information episodes=" 26 " aired=" April 2010 - September 2010 "]

Misaki Ayuzawa is the first female president at a school that recently transitioned from an all boys school to a co-ed one. As you can imagine, that isn't the most fun of jobs especially when you're dealing with a majority male population that tries its best to trample you in its testosterone. However, she manages to control them through her Akido techniques and swiftly became known as the Demon President. However, Misaki has a secret. Because of her poor family finances, she works part-time at a maid cafe to help pay the bills. Whilst she has managed to live a double life all this while, it is soon shattered when pretty-boy Takumi Usui walks in on her during a shift. Instead of revealing her secret, he decides to blackmail her so he can get closer to her. The two are similar in the sense that Kyouko and Misaki are both strong female leads that take control most of the time but tend to have vulnerable sides. They also tend to get into random hijinks with a particular guy because they can't stand him at all. And finally, they're both dense blockheads who can't sense when the love of their life is standing right beside them.

5. Toradora!

[sourceLink asin="B004FT6I08" asin_jp="" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 25 " aired=" October 2008 - March 2009 "]

If you ask anyone in their school, Ryuuji Takasu is a delinquent that goes around intimidating people with his scary face and Taiga Aisaka is the cute mascot of the school. However, in contrast to their looks, Ryuuji is a gentle soul he spends much of his time helping around his house and taking care of his single mother when she's overworked while Taiga is a fiesty hot-head who goes around attacking people with a wooden katana. They soon discover that the other has a crush on their respective best friends, and form a pact to help the other capture their crushes. Nothing can go wrong, right? While thematically Toradora! and Skip Beat aren't the most similar, they are a very similar type of romance anime that rarely exists nowadays. They both deliver a close to realistic approximation of what romance in real life is actually like, and most of the time you can actually see that the characters really would react that way in a certain scenario. There and ups and downs and all arounds, but they'll eventually find a way.

3. Kimi ni Todoke (Kimi ni Todoke: From Me to You)

[sourceLink asin="B00I5UXAC2" asin_jp="" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 25 " aired=" October 2009 - March 2010 "]

Ever watched the movie "The Ring"? Remember that creepy central character that crawled out of the well and scared the pants of anyone who watched it at the time? Unfortunately for Kuronuma Sawako, all of her classmates remember. Though she tries her best to be a kind and sweet girl, she is often mistaken to be a serial killer because of her resemblance to the girl from "The Ring", leading her to be called Sadako by her classmates. However, Sawako doesn't want to give up. She tries her best to make friends and comes across Kazehaya Shouta the most popular guy in class who is well known to be extremely friendly and charming. When he starts responding to her advances, she figures that maybe she actually has a chance at friendship, and maybe something more. If you enjoyed the Shoujo-ness of Skip Beat and want more of that particular feeling, this is the anime for you. There aren't an abundance of similar elements, just the cut and dry ones like being a romance and having a likable guy plus girl to form a relationship. But the romance in both animes are realistic enough and they are both very Shoujo in their execution that you just can't miss this if you liked Skip Beat.

Hikari Hanazono and Kei Takishima met at the age of 6 when their pro-wrestling fathers introduced them to each other. With the assumption that she was the best around, she challenged Kei to a match and was trounced soundly by him. Ever since that point, she has been unable to defeat him in anything, from grades to the most innocuous of things like pole vaulting or fishing. In order to get more opportunities to defeat him, she has joined the same elite school that he did. The school, Hakusenkan, takes its students' rankings very seriously, and rewards the top few students with the distinction of Special A. This grants them privileges and luxuries that other students don't have, provided they can maintain their grades. Kei holds the first place and Hikari keeps trying to beat him from her second place. She'll keep trying, constantly unaware of his feelings for her. If you liked the boyish, dense and blockheaded character of Kyouko you'll definitely love Hikari because she's quite similar in that regard. She does everything in her power to excel and finally defeat him but she's completely oblivious of his feelings for her, just like Kyouko doesn't realise Ren loves her. Ren and Kei will do their best to take care of their girls, but it isn't really an easy task…

Princess Yona lives your typical princess life; she is enthroned in a palace of decadence and lives a life of luxury that normal people like us could possibly never experience within our entire lifetime. However, that all comes crashing down when her cousin Su-Won betrays her family by plunging a blade into the chest of the King. Yona is soon forced to flee the castle with her childhood friend Son Hak into the outskirts of their land Kouka, but is soon shocked to discover that her country isn't the idyllic land she thought it to be. Kouka seems to be wrought with poverty and and corruption, painting a sordid picture that she almost refuses to acknowledge. With naught but her childhood friend at her side, she must try her best to restore her country, or die trying. While it seems that the two anime couldn't be further apart, they are actually quite similar. Yona and Kyouko both start out with a love interest whom they deeply cherish that betrays them in one of the worst possible fashion. They are then forced to develop from the annoying twits that they were into fully mature women. At some point, they also meet another love interest that they initially dislike, but come to like over the course of the show. So with that said, just watch it.

With a romantic, dramatic, and comedic narrative paired with a spirited, can-do female protagonist, Skip Beat! is a budding anime classic. Weighing in with 25 episodes, Skip Beat! may leave many longing for more, especially considering the continued serialization of the manga series on which it was based. Hopefully these recommendations satisfy those itching for sometime more like Skip Beat!. For those unfamiliar with Skip Beat!, this anime follows the adventures of sixteen-year-old Kyoko Mogami as she seeks vengeance against Shotaro Fuwa, her superstar childhood friend who used her as merely a maid in his pursuit of fame. To seek her revenge, Kyoko goes into the entertainment industry to become a bigger star than him. Throughout her shenanigans, Kyoko meets and befriends Ren Tsuruga, Shotaro’s rival entertainer, and soon discovers much more about herself.

Though a bit of an oldie, Kodocha is still surprisingly a goldie. Attracted to Kyoko’s spunkiness? For those who loved Skip Beat! for Kyoto, Kodocha might be up your alley. Kodocha is the story of Sana, a pint sized ball of energy star of the hit TV comedy “Child’s Toy, as she butts heads with Akito Hayama. Commander of all the boys in school, Akito appears to wreak havoc, but Sana soon discovers more about him and finds he might not be as bad as he seems.

However, while the narrative of both of these shows differs, their humor and the inner strength of the female characters resemble one another. In the Wallflower, four beautiful boys attempt to transform Sunako into a perfect lady. This, of course, isn’t for charity. Rather, these boys are motivated by the reward of free rent should they succeed. Unfortunately for them, Sunako is just fine the way she is: watching horror movies and not caring about her looks.

Moving on from Full Moon o Shagashite on a lighter note is Ouran High School Host Club. Much like Skip Beat!, Ouran High School Host Club is about a girl going through a transformation, but a different sort of transformation than Kyoko. Irreverently poking fun at the shoujo genre itself, Ouran perhaps is a strange recommendation for Skip Beat!. But, considering the comedic elements of the show, touches of Ouran can perhaps be found in Skip Beat!. Upon entering the prestigious Ouran High School, Haruhi Fujioka runs into a lavish crowd, the Ouran High School Host Club, a group of handsome boys servicing the ladies of the school. One broken vase later, Haruhi becomes a host herself working off a debt worth thousands of yen and becoming friends of the boys of the host club.

Looking back at the recommendations above, there appears to be a theme of hardworking women like we see with Kyoko in Skip Beat!. For this last recommendation, we have the hardest workingwoman of them all, Hiroko Matsukata. Though older than Kyoko, Hiroko represents an ongoing theme commonly shown in anime nowadays: girls being ambitious. In Hataraki Man, Hiroko works at a highly recognized magazine company. Face with constant pressure and odd hours, Hiroko can transform into a Hataraki Man mode, or workingman mode.

Dear otakus, we are back! This time, we are going to talk (yet again) about Pokemon. However, the approach will be different. This time, we are going to discuss the best Pokemon evolutions we have seen in the Pokemon games… which can give us very interesting Pokemons as result. So, what are we waiting for? We want to be the very best, right? Let’s go!

[ad_top2 class="mt40 mb40"]

10. Magnezone

Magnezone pokemon
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Pokemon Wikia" url="http://pokemon.wikia.com/wiki/Magnezone" ]
  • Gen: Fourth
  • Pokedex: 462

This is the final evolution of Magnemite.Yes, that curiously looking metallic sphere with magnets as hands. Three of them form Magnezone, linked with a powerful magnetic force. Magnezone has a good level of attack and defense, besides being damaged only by three other Pokemon types. Yet, another evolution would be desirable, right? What makes this evolution so great? In this case, you have to be on a specific place. You can choose either Mt. Coronet, Chargestone Cave, Kalos Route 13, or New Mauville to level your Magnetone up. The you will get Magnezone, a nice ovni-like Pokemon with magnets as hands and with a boost on attack and defense.

9. Mamoswine

Mamoswine pokemon
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Pokemon Wikia" url="http://pokemon.wikia.com/wiki/Mamoswine" ]
  • Gen: Second
  • Pokedex: 221

Swinub is a lovely looking Pokemon based on a baby wild boar. It is so hairy and fluffy because he needs protection from the cold! Of course that being a baby, his abilities are rather low, being hit points, attack and speed the only ones that stand out. But well, he is also damaged by eleven Pokemon types, so… how can we make it evolve? Well, once Swinub reaches level 33 and becomes Piloswine, we have to train it and teach him new tricks. If it learns Ancient power and levels up, it will evolve into Mamoswine. To be honest, only its attack and defense will be very high, but hey! At least we have a furry and poison-resistant Pokemon.

8. Blissey

blissey-pokemon
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Pokemon Wikia" url="http://pokemon.wikia.com/wiki/Blissey" ]
  • Gen: Second
  • Pokedex: 242

Here we have another Pokemon from the second Generation. Its first form is the absolutely cute baby Happiny, who resembles a pink egg with a high ponytail that is taking care of a white egg. Let’s remember that these eggs are nutritious ^^ Then we have to make sure Happiny levels up while holding an Oval stone during day time to have the next evolution (Chansey). So, what do we have to do in order to make Chansey become Blissey? Well, it has to have high friendship, which is a measure of how happy is a Pokemon with its trainer. Yes, Chansey is so generous and social that its strength is friendship. Once it becomes Blissey, it has the maximum hit points ability and a decent special defense. Blissey truly is a nourishing Pokemon with an interesting evolution!

7. Slowking

slowking-pokemon
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Pokemon Wikia" url="http://pokemon.wikia.com/wiki/Slowking" ]
  • Gen: Second
  • Pokedex: 199

We have to admit that Slowpoke is not the most popular Pokemon out there. Just by looking at it, we can tell that it is rather lazy. Slowpoke is damaged or weak against two thirds of Pokemon types and only its hit points level is kinda decent. So, this Pokemon needs at least one redeeming quality. Why evolve Slowpoke into Slowbro if you can get a more interesting Pokemon instead? Just trade him while holding a King’s rock and you will get the regal Slowking. He is a Slowpoke who stands straight on two legs and uses a conch as crown. Plus, he does good avances on his abilities (except speed, of course).

6. Alakazam

Alakazam pokemon
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Pokemon Wikia" url="http://pokemon.wikia.com/wiki/Alakazam" ]
  • Gen: First
  • Pokedex: 63

Abra is a bipedal yellow Pokemon with psychic abilities. It has a good special attack and decent speed, but Abra can receive damage from 13 Pokemon types. Maybe it is better if it evolves, right? Abra can evolve into Kadabra when it reaches level 16, but it can still evolve one more time. The detail here is that, if you want your Kadabra to become Alakazam, you have to trade him. Yet, it is worth the nuisances, as his special defense gets better and his overall power naturally increases. Taking into account that this Pokemon is weak physically but mentally strong, making it evolve will help its chances to win in battle. Now he will have two spoons at hand, which as you may know, increase its psychic abilities.

5. Milotic

milotic-pokemon
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Pokemon Wikia" url="http://pokemon.wikia.com/wiki/Milotic" ]
  • Gen: Third
  • Pokedex: 350

We have beautiful Pokemon inspired by fish-like Goldeen and Finneon. On the other hand, we also have Magikarp and Feebas. Just look at the latest, it is comical with its wide open eyes, dark circles and sad mouth. The biggest problem is not his appearance, it is his lack of relevant abilities beyond speed. So, how does this sad Pokemon fish evolve? With the power of Beauty! You will have to feed Feebas with Pokeblocks or Poffins made with dry flavored berries. From Generation V onwards, you can also get Feebas’ evolution when traded holding a Prism Scale. The beautiful Milotic you will get comes with a great increase on its abilities, particularly on hit points, special attack and special defense.

4. Mantine

mantine-pokemon
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Pokemon Wikia" url="http://pokemon.wikia.com/wiki/Mantine" ]
  • Gen: Second
  • Pokedex: 226

Apparently, the second generation gave us a bunch of interest Pokemon evolutions. Mantyke is a lovely looking manta ray, blue colored with big shiny black eyes. It has a good special defense, but well, being Pokemon experts, we can’t avoid trying to make it evolve. The bad news is that we need another Pokemon for that. Enter Remoraid, a fish like Pokemon with apparently no strong points or abilities. But although it remains as a separate Pokemon, when Mantyke levels up, the Mantyke becomes Mantine. Now we have a better special attack, defense and speed. And we can also go surfing with our brand new giant manta ray :p

3. Ninjask

ninjask-pokemon
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Pokemon Wikia" url="http://pokemon.wikia.com/wiki/Ninjask" ]
  • Gen: Third
  • Pokedex: 290

Nincada is a bug Pokemon inspired by the Japanese cicadas. At first sight, you might be tempted to believe the poor creature was ran over by the rush hour traffic, as it looks like it is covered in bandages. Nincada’s defense is the only decent leveled ability it possesses, but let’s not judge this Pokemon so fast. If you happen to have an empty slot in your party and an extra Pokeball, you can make Nincada evolve at level 20. Cicadas leave behind an entire shell with their old form when they mature, so Nincada becomes Ninjask and Shedinja, who is Nincada’s shell. You get two Pokemons! And both are more powerful than Nincada. Ninjask is better in Speed and attack, while Shedinja has a good attack only. Well, it looks like you can not get everything in life, but we can’t deny this is an interesting Poke evolution based on a real insect.

2. Tyrogue

tyrogue-pokemon
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Pokemon Wikia" url="http://pokemon.wikia.com/wiki/Tyrogue" ]
  • Gen: Second
  • Pokedex: 236

Now that we are discussing multiple Pokemon we can get from Evolutions, it is time to mention Tyrogue. This is a fighting baby Pokemon who can be trained in diverse ways. As a baby, Tyrogue really has low stats, starting with 35 in everything. Yes, everything, and it can be damaged by 12 Pokemon types. In short, depending on how well Tyrogue is doing on its stats, he can evolve into three different Pokemon. You can get Hitmonlee if Tyrogue’s attack is higher than its defense. You can get Hitmonchan if your Pokemon’s defense is higher than its attack. Or (and this is tricky) you can get Hitmontop if both stats are the same. In all cases, its abilities will increase considerably. You only have to think of which Pokemon you would like to have and train your Tyrogue accordingly.

1. Eevee

eevee-pokemon
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Pokemon Wikia" url="http://pokemon.wikia.com/wiki/Eevee" ]
  • Gen: First
  • Pokedex: 133

We have finally reached the king of evolutions! Who would say that this cutie could be so multifaceted? Its abilities are nothing special as an Eevee, being between 45 and 65 in all the stats. But the great variety of Pokemon he can evolve into is worthwhile. Why not have several Eevees and level them up in different ways?: You can get Vaporeon with a Water stone. Eevee evolves into Jolteon with a Thunder stone. You can get a Flareon with a Fire stone. You simply can get high in friendship by day to get an Espeon, or you can get high at night for an Umbreon (in friendship guys, in friendship). You can get close to a Moss Rock and level up your Eevee there to get a Leafeon. Or get close to an Ice rock for a Glaceon. Or the most cheesy way of evolving ever! Level up while doing a Fairy type move and two affection hearts to get a Sylveon!

Final thoughts

We can see that, especially in the first generations of Pokemon, we have many interesting ways of evolving. This adds so many interesting possibilities to the game, don’t you think the same? The world of Pokemon will keep adding cute, weird and/or mysterious creatures. With the advent of Sun/Moon, we can hardly wait to see how the new Pokemon evolve. But do tell us which other evolutions you find interesting? Don’t forget that we are open to all your comments and suggestions. See you soon, Pokemon trainers!

The story follows a young and shy schoolgirl who has this fascination with cellphones. She continues to dream about owning the ideal phone that suits her own tastes. One day that dream somehow turned into a strange reality as the very same phone she imagined in her mind started to ring, and someone picks up. Kimi ni Shika Kikoenai was initially a light novel which was then adapted into a manga of the same name, and comes with two short stories instead of three. Two young girls have gone through a lot during their high school years, and now through their pains they somehow have the ability to connect to one another telepathically through the phones in their minds. As they continue to discover more about each other, they realize that neither live in the same time and space which gets even more deeper as you read through. The second story in the manga looks at a young boy who is able to absorb the wounds of other people and take on their pains. To have a better connection to these stories, we recommend not only grabbing the manga, but be sure to pick up the original light novel.

The Jojo series has gone on to sell millions of volumes, with so many new chapters coming out constantly. Since there are so many parts that bring Jojo together, we thought it would be best to focus on one of the better arcs of the series. Steel Ball Run takes place in the 18th century Wild West era, which is around the same period as the first arc. Gyro and Johnny have their eyes set on the fifty million dollar race which is a race that spans across most of America. Their race track becomes a no holds barred land, as racers from across the nation aim to accomplish their dreams, but soon realize there’s more in store for them in the end. Each chapter in this arc is so full of history, action, and over the top excitement, as you get to learn more about America’s past but also develop a strong bond with the characters. You’re always introduced to something freakish and outlandish which keeps you coming back to see what happens next, and the story really draws you in as you’re clamoring for more each time something extreme goes down. If you enjoy the Jojo series and are hungry to know more, then be sure to catch up to this arc as it will definitely entice you.

There’s a reason why Guts and his band of allies have made it this far over the span of 30 years. This manga has sold millions of copies and has become an iconic franchise all across the globe. The story focuses on Guts and his lust for revenge as he’s betrayed by Griffith, and his beloved Casca has been taken captive by him. Now Guts travels all over the vast and demon filled lands in search for Casca, with his curse constantly haunting him at every direction he turns. While we’d love to go into detail about the story in the summary, it would most likely spoil a heavy chunk of the story so we recommend watching the movies, as well as the latest anime to get a feel for everything that’s happening. The manga of course is the best place to get all of the nitty gritty, as Guts is hungry to kill just about anyone in his path to make sure Casca stays alive, and Griffith’s head finds its way on a spike sometime soon. With the tremendous help coming from a variety of characters such as the Skull Knight, there’s always action and blood spillage everywhere in this incredible story driven series. While the manga is on hiatus we insist that you catch up while you can before things start to erupt again.

10. Misty from Pokémon Indigo League

[Information episodes=" 276 " aired=" April 1997 – November 2002 "]

The release of Pokémon Go has been one of the highlighting events to shake this year. As it is one of the most downloaded and profitable apps to date, it is fitting that we include one of the original characters on this list to cosplay. Pokémon, at its infancy in 1997, includes Misty, a sassy gal, determined to be the best water-type Pokémon trainer. Misty throughout the series, with Ash and Brock as her companions, acquires more knowledge of Pokémon and progressively develops as well. We believe that her outfit reflects her intrepid and cheeky spirit. Misty’s trademark outfit includes a yellow crop top tank, red suspenders, jean shorts, red sneakers, and an orange pack. As she is continually active with capturing Pokémon, battling various trainers, and traveling with Ash and Brock, what she wears encompasses ease and is acceptable for her active life. Misty is a great choice to cosplay because of her namesake in a highly classic and acclaimed series in the world of anime!

9. Enma Ai from Jigoku Shoujo (Hell Girl)

[2_images_in_row character='enma-ai-jigoku-shoujo' anime='Hell Girl dvd']
[sourceLink asin="B005DR63GA" asin_jp="" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 26 " aired=" October 2005 – April 2006 "]

Hell Girl, for the most part, surrounds the concept of revenge, watching people reap what they sow and essentially getting their “just deserts.” Imagine if inflicting this punishment was possible by simply accessing a website to send your intended victim straight to hell. The concept in and of itself is extremely scary. This “Hell Correspondence” will call up Enma Ai, whose sole task is to ferry the chosen target to hell. As this is only the half of it, the remainder of this contract must be completed when the requesting person submits payment of himself or herself into hell as well. Yikes! Enma is a great choice to cosplay for this Halloween because of the swift and unforgiving nature of her job. The fear of death and damnation is something one does not look forward to when their time is up. This circumstance is heightened when someone as sinister and creepy looking as Enma is the one to bring you to your doom. Often seen with a floral kimono and piercing red eyes, she may appear harmless, but don’t be fooled, she is far from friendly.

8. Ikaros from Sora no Otoshimono (Heaven’s Lost Property)

[2_images_in_row character='Ikaros Sora no Otoshimono' anime='Sora no Otoshimono dvd']
[sourceLink asin="B00KHO3VXM" asin_jp="" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 13 " aired=" October 2009 – December 2009 "]

Tomoki Sakurai’s peaceful life is forever changed when a strange, bright, white, meteorite-like object falls from the sky. As this entity lands on the surface, its appearance is angelic and adorable. The purpose and function of Ikaros, as she is called, is to find a being to call her master. As she gazes upon Tomoki, from that moment forth, servant and master experience a ton of craziness and shenanigans. As Heaven’s Lost Property is recognized for providing a great deal of fan service, Ikaros for cosplay, Halloween 2016, is no doubt an eye-catching and sexy choice. Her ensemble includes a white revealing bustier dress, thigh high socks, knee high boots and a set of angel wings. Can you keep a secret? Misaki Ayuzawa’s part-time job as a café maid may seem embarrassing to her, but place the utmost confidence in Honey’s, as we are certain that this outfit is the one to choose for cosplay. As Misaki’s character in Kaichou wa Maid-sama! reflects her strong and stern demeanor, her maid attire contrasts this completely. The concept of maid cafés allows for patrons to be serviced at their whims and desires by loveable and charming maids, willing to please their “masters of the moment”. Maid cosplay is a common and timeless choice and we can think of no other maid to choose from than our favorite, Misaki! As maids have a reputation for alluring, with a short black dress, white apron, white headband and a “can-do attitude”, this maid ensemble is perfect because it is an enticing idea to have someone do whatever you want, so you can kick up your feet and relax. Ahh, this is the life!

In an attempt to blockade the titans, mankind has built three enormous walls, where for a century, people have been able to live without trouble. One day, the peace is disturbed and the outer wall is breached. The people living within these walls are scared, as everyone scrambles to safety towards the center. However, there are those that believe their existence is worth fighting for and train to face the threat on humanity. As one of the three main soldiers in this anime, Misaka Ackerman is a very quiet and stoic individual. She has a very close bond with Eren because as children, he saved her life. As she is loyal to him, Mikasa joined the ranks to fight alongside him. She is extremely skillful, graduating at the top of her class and essentially is a paragon. Dressed in her combatant uniform, which includes a khaki jacket, white cargo pants, white button-up top, combat boots and her equipment, she sets herself apart from the others with a lovely feminine red scarf. Misaka is a great character to cosplay because of how awesome and ass kicking she is.

In contrast, the ghouls face the challenge of living among humans, attempting to blend in. Engaging in the internal fight against instinct and external issues of avoiding capture by the CCG, Ken Kaneki, being from both worlds, demonstrates the difficulties and ease of each species. Touka Kirishima is a ghoul in the series, who can successfully balance living as herself among people. She is a significant character because of her accessibility to the ghoul community; as an informant and food supplier. Touka works hard at protecting her kind as well as establishing harmony with humans. However, don’t let her appearance fool you! She possesses superhuman abilities, in addition to her smart and perceptive attitude. Dressed in a school uniform, with her dark black eyes and piercing red pupils, her ominous look is fitting for Halloween. Touka’s sinister looks will definitely scare you off, as she is someone you would not want to run into in a dark, cold alley!

Dimension W is an exciting sci-fi, futuristic, action anime. Dimension W is a newly discovered fourth dimension. With a newfound technology called coils, humanity can now use an inexhaustible source of energy to power up robots that closely resemble people. However, our lead character, Kyouma Mabuchi, is skeptical of the usage of coils because of his affinity for classic and old school technology. As he is an independent contractor, his job entails retrieving these coils. Upon one of his missions, we run into Mira Yurizaki, an android. Mira is an interesting character that has been sheltered for more of her existence and must cope with learning how to interact with humans. Mira insists that she is human, despite having robotic mechanisms and equipment attached to her body. After a tragedy occurred in Mira’s life, she decides to join Kyouma and help him retrieve coils. As such, Mira’s look includes an interesting looking headpiece, yellow frill tank, pink biker shorts, and thigh high white boots. She also has a tail and technological markers all over her body. Mira would be an attractive pick for cosplay, adding a twist to the robot getup.

We feel that Bananya for cosplay for this Halloween is a simple and cute look to create.
