10. Ubukata Chikako (Days)

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="B01IP92NO8" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 24 " aired=" Jul 2016 - Dec 2016 " post_id=""]

Ubukata is the manager of the soccer team that Jin and Tsukishi reside in for the anime Days. Of the duo, Tsukishi is considered to the talentless one compared to the genius playstyles of Jin. Hence, he receives much criticism from the majority of people around him at the start because there are many who think that Tsukishi shouldn’t even bother playing on the same field as Jin as he would only hamper him. Instead of supporting him like a good manager should, Ubukata joins in on the berating and tells him to his face that he should quit as well. This is all due to her insecurities from her past. She had tried to write a novel at some point but decided to quit completely because she received criticism just like Tsukishi. Thus, she spends most of the season picking on the one guy who won’t fold at criticism like her. Even when she finally lightens up, she can’t even do her job properly and gets the names of players wrong.

9. Takamiya Naho (Orange)

[2_images_in_row character='naho takamiya orange' anime='orange_poster_H_TOHOnashi_CS6 dvd']
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="B01HNOSG38" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 13 " aired=" Jul 2016 - Sep 2016 " post_id=""]

Naho is the main character of the anime Orange. Which just makes it a thousand times more depressing to place her on this list. But if she’s useless, she’s useless. Have you ever regretted anything? Now don’t go full macho and state that you don’t know what regrets are. Just be real for a moment. Have you ever wanted to change anything in your past? If you had the opportunity to tell your past self-something like “Don’t go for that girl because she’ll break your heart.” Would you? Naho has that very opportunity. And she does use it. The problem lies not in that she’s stupid enough not to take the opportunity. Even though it’s proven that the letter is completely legit and she should totally follow her own bloody advice, Naho acts like a dumb shit who never does what she is told to by her future self even if it’ll erase her regrets and possibly save the life of the boy she loves! If you ever get this same opportunity, remember to ask yourself if you were just that stupid in the past. Communicating with the past you might cause more problems than solve them.

8. Lalatina Dustiness Ford aka Darkness (Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo!)

Darkness is one of the companions that accompany Kazuma on his dubious quest to slay the demon king and save the world. She boasts one of the stronger classes obtainable; that of the crusader. A crusader is able to hit hard and take many hits with their body. That's where everything goes wrong. Darkness is an extreme masochist who enjoys getting hit by strong attacks. Because of this, she invests all her points on endurance and refuses to raise her accuracy. Thus, she misses every single time she attacks, even at point blank range. It's debatable whether she or “one-shot” Megumin is more useless, but at least Megumin is accurate. Darkness is so bad that the Internet has dubbed her as “critical miss!" to denote the magnitude of her uselessness in the series. At least she's funny and not frustrating to watch right?

7. Tea Gardner (Yu-Gi-Oh!)

The world of YGO is filled with countless duelists who pit their hand crafted decks against each other in a battle to see who is the best. The duelist that the series follows most of the time is Yugi Moto, the secretly reborn Pharaoh who can duel like nobody’s business. On the side, he has his childhood friend Tea Gardner, another supposed duelist. Why supposed? She’s participated in maybe 1 or 2 duels even though the series has stretched on for a couple of seasons. Instead of being a driving force like Yugi or Kaiba, she ends up being the infomercial for the audience in explaining what the cards do. The very cards that have been explained a thousand times to us. As if we didn’t play the game already. If she explains what Pot of Greed does one more time, somebody’s gonna get a hurt real bad.

6. Amane Misa (Death Note)

[Information episodes=" 37 " aired=" Oct 2006 - June 2007 " post_id=""]

Death Note is about the death game between super detective L and super megalomaniac Light Yagami. So how does Misa fit into this? Well for one, she’s super in love with Light. And she’ll do anything for him like completely because he’s hot and stuff. Yes, they made the only female who got her very own Death Note a literal ditzy blonde bimbo who can’t think beyond her infatuation for a boy. While Misa isn’t completely useless, as she makes a great tool for Light, she’s simply wasted potential. The first female Death Note user could’ve pretended she was a ditzy blonde idiot in love with Light but actually stabs him in the back later and takes his Death Note away from him, introducing a third player in the game. Instead, she becomes the only survivor of the game purely through her sheer stupidity.

5. Kuran Yuuki (Vampire Knight)

Remember that one shoujo anime that everyone was really hyped about maybe 10 years ago? That’s either Vampire Knight or Skip Beat. Vampire Knight is about a vampire couple giving birth to a girl because their son needs someone to marry. You got that right. A girl was birthed to become the betrothed wife of her own brother. So that’s screwed up and all, but what makes her so useless? She goes along with it. Any other person would feel completely indignant or at least stop to question when presented with a story about their past like this, not go along with the flow! Not only that, she ends up following so many of the shoujo tropes by over relying on her man beefcake to take care of her throughout the series. She’s definitely one of the typical shoujo damsels.

4. Sayaka Miki (Puella Magi Madoka Magica)

[2_images_in_row character='madoka magika sayaka miki00' anime='Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica dvd']

Madoka is the stunning and gritty take on Mahou Shoujos by the esteemed Shaft studio. In it, magical girls are made like every product on the conveyor belts as sacrifices to the demons that they battle. First off, the girls are given a wish that they can use to transform them into magical girls. It can be any wish, and the stronger their desire for this wish, the more powerful they are as magical girls. So with such a wish, what does Sayaka do with it? Does she wish for unlimited wealth or unparalleled beauty? No she wishes for the boy that she has a crush on, not one that she has a relationship with or any guaranteed future, to recover from his injuries. She had one wish, and she squandered it on someone who probably won’t even appreciate it at all. All because she suffered from boy fever. Come on guys, girls don’t do that. Not all they think about is boys you know?

3. Henrietta de Tristain (Zero no Tsukaima)

[2_images_in_row character='Henrietta de Tristain Zero no Tsukaima' anime='Zero no Tsukaima dvd']

Zero no Tsukaima revolves around Louise, the zero of a mage who can’t cast any spells properly and her human summon, Saito. The two try their best to get along and discover why she sucks so much as a mage while getting into trouble all the time. Henrietta is the princess and later queen of Tristain, the country the Louise resides in. She also happens to be the childhood friend of Louise, and as such relies on her. But maybe she relies on her a bit too much. As the crowned ruler of a sovereign nation, you’d think she would have a bit more latitude to carry out her will or that of the people. Instead, we get arc after arc where the basic premise is “Henrietta has a problem so she asks her friend Louise, who can’t cast any spells, to go fix them.” There was even that little bit where she sides with her undead boyfriend controlled by the enemy and attacks Louise. You know? Louise? The one who was cleaning up her mess constantly?

2. Orihime Inoue (Bleach)

Hoo boy. We’ve arrived at one of the most worthless females to ever exist in the Bleach series. Earlier in the series, she’s useless in the sense that all she can really do to contribute is heal the cast. That’s not the worst thing in the world, even though there’s an entire division in Soul Society dedicated to healing already. At least she’s being a support character. But in the later part of the series, she gets threatened by Aizen. Either she goes with them or Aizen attacks her friends. Instead of realizing that he would’ve have attacked them anyway, she panics and leaves with Aizen, causing Ichigo and gang to go stir crazy and attack Aizen’s base to rescue her, nullifying the reason she went with them in the first place. So okay, her amazing healing power isn’t just healing but the reversal of time itself. But is this godly ability used for good? No, she helps Aizen activate the goddamn Hogyoku, the damn thing that will help him kill her friends faster.

1. Nunnally vi Britannia (Code Geass)

Anyone who has watched Code Geass to the end can tell you what the basic story is about. Lelouch, though angry at the Britannian Empire, is only fighting against the oppressors of the world because he wants to make a beautiful peaceful world for his sister, whom he loves dearly. To that end, he even makes the world fear him as the demon emperor so that they will be united against a symbol. At the conclusion of the series, it seems he has succeeded because Nunnally is the new ruler of Britannia and she is opening peace talks with other countries. But everyone forgets the Fleija arc, and what she did during that arc. Remember that awesome brother who would do anything for her? Well she didn’t. When the cunning Schneizel approaches her with the “Your brother is evil please halp” proposition, she just goes “Yeah sure”. She then proceeds to take whole of the Fleija trigger, which is the equivalent of holding a few hundred nuclear missiles in your hand. And they are all poised to destroy her beloved brother.

Conclusion

All in all, it’s just a damn shame. The anime industry often holds females at a much lower regard than guys most of the time (though that’s another article for another day), despite them being equal as human beings. There is much potential that is simply squandered. It is so easy to think up strong female characters that have never been done, simply because there are so few. We could do with more than the paltry sum we have right now. But that’s all we got at the moment. Got any other useless females that make you rage? Share with us in the comments below!

Taboo Tattoo is an action oriented, supernatural anime that was brought to us by producers J.C.Staff. When Taboo Tattoo was announced that it was getting an anime adaptation, it had all the promise in the world with Takashi Watanabe at the helm. Unfortunately, it fell a little short of our expectations. Nonetheless, Taboo Tattoo was able to deliver some riveting battles and head scratching moments that surely will not be forgotten. Regardless if you feel the same way about Taboo Tattoo, there are certainly moments that are worth highlighting. At its core, Taboo Tattoo is a dark anime that blends martial arts, super powerful tattoos, and fanservice reasonably well. The peculiar comedy whether it was intentional or not was an asset to the anime and it ultimately helped shape Taboo Tattoo’s identity. For this particular countdown, we want to exam some of the best moments in this anime. With that being said, let’s take a look at the top 10 character moments in Taboo Tattoo.

[ad_top2 class="mt40 mb40"]

10. Touko's Misinterpretation

image-10-taboo-tattoo-ep
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Episode 9" url="" ]

Series director Takashi Watanabe has been linked to numerous anime with fanservice that just drips out the sides of your screen. Ikkitousen, Freezing and Ichiban Ushiro no Daimaou all come to mind. It may not be as prevalent in Taboo Tattoo but the fanservice is still there and it brings out some rather interesting moments. With that being said, during our selection process for this wonderful list we wanted to showcase some of those ecchi scenes that had us cracking up. Our first choice is a comical scene that takes place in episode six between Seigi and his good friend/guardian Touko. Seigi had been training hard in his grandfather’s dojo and decided to take a rest inside. Touko came to visit Seigi at his grandfathers with the intentions of sharing her ample watermelon with him. When she arrived she noticed that he was still sleeping. As she looked down on his sprawled out body, she wrongfully got the idea that he was offering himself up to her. She felt that she was shaming herself if she didn’t take advantage of this opportunity. With little hesitation, she straddled him and Seigi woke up to two rather big surprises. Not to be outdone, Touko also felt a presence poking her from below as she screamed; drawing confusing from Seigi’s grandfather.

9. Tamaki Proposing to Yumi

image-9-taboo-tattoo-ep
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Episode 10" url="" ]

This next moment is a little less lewd than the previous selection. However what this scene does is play with you emotionally. As battle preparations are taking place during episode ten, Tamaki and Tom decide to visit an anime convention one last time before they get plunged into the biggest battle of their lives. It was reasonable to think that neither of them would make it out alive, so it was a good time to enjoy what time they had left. So this is where Tamaki meets with his childhood friend Yumi for potentially the last time. Tamaki and Yumi grew up together at a young age. While they were still young, Yumi was unwillingly separated from Tamaki. An anime convention, years later reunited the two. This is where Tamaki came to the realization that Yumi was now writing manga. Against all odds, Tamaki mustered up the strength and proposed to Yumi. Despite Yumi’s concerns for his well-being, Tamaki assures that he will come back alive and hands her a popular manga that he has yet to read. In doing so, he lets her know that he looks forward to reading it when he gets back. That strong scene gives us a reason to invest into Tamaki from then on out.

8. Ping Pong Proposition

image-8-taboo-tattoo-ep
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Episode 5" url="" ]

The “ping pong proposition” as we have titled it, thrusts us right back to the fanservice. In fact, it’s arguably one of the most ecchi moments in the entire series. The pacing felt strange in episode five and this scene was one of the reasons why. Seigi and Touko were on their way to buy some groceries on a lovely day in town. During their little adventure, they came across series antagonists Arya and Il. Touko demonstrates why she’s Seigi’s guardian and demands that he goes and finishes the shopping while she takes care of Arya. He complies. Arya and Touko end up at a nearby game store to square-off in an unsuspecting game of ping pong. Touko proposes that if she wins, Arya is to leave Seigi alone. However, should Arya win, she gets to do as she pleases with Touko’s voluptuous breasts. The heated game goes back and forth with each girl seemingly on the same level. Arya starts to take control with each smashing shot, tearing more of Touko’s shirt in the process. This naturally draws a crowd and Arya eventually wins. The outcome resulted in an awkward conversation between Seigi and Arya. While they’re conversing, Arya fondles Touko’s breasts until Arya is satisfied and leaves Touko in a passionate heap.

7. Il Possesses Touko

image-7-taboo-tattoo-captcha-ep
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Episode 2" url="" ]

The number seven selection we can say without a doubt takes on a more serious tone. This is the first of several battles that are listed on this countdown. We’re going to start with a doozy from episode three that includes Tom, Seigi, and Touko, well sort of. At the end of episode two, Touko stalked Seigi in order to make sure nothing would happen to him. After Seigi entered Tom and Izzy’s hideout, Touko was attacked outside by Il. This led to a furious start to episode three when the now-possessed Touko smashed down the door with her eyes focused on Seigi. The turbulent fight rages on when Tom gets stabbed by an umbrella incapacitating him. Seigi is left alone to defend himself against an incensed villain who has bunkered up in his best friend’s body. Seigi avoids getting the sharp point of an umbrella to the eye but not long after that he couldn’t avoid getting stabbed in the left shoulder. When the situation looked grim, Tom was able to activate his tattoo and while he dashed towards Touko, Seigi landed a devastating headbutt that knocked her to the ground. Tom was able to subdue her and remove Il from Touko’s limp body to save the day.

6. Seigi and Arya's Final Showdown

image-6-taboo-tattoo-ep
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Episode 12" url="" ]

Continuing on with this countdown we come to the season finale. This episode has a lot of fighting as you would expect in a final showdown, between Seigi and Arya. The animosity had been building up ever since Touko died a handful of episode prior. The tension was at a fever pitch between Seigi and Arya but unfortunately this episode seemed rushed. We felt that the fight could have been more impactful if it put more emphasis on the aforementioned tension that was built between Seigi and Arya. Regardless of what we thought, the battle between the two was still presentable and it was the climax of the series after all. The clash between the two beasts was fun; they really had a menacing look to them. The atmosphere was dark and gloomy to really emphasize the emotions in each character. With the help of Arya’s older sister, Seigi was able to thwart Arya and put an end to the mayhem. In the aftermath, Seigi held hands with the brutally battered Izzy and took care of her with the sunrise in the distance. It was a touching moment between those two once you really think of what those characters had been through; Izzy lost her love interest in BB and Seigi lost his best friend in Touko.

[ad_middle]

5. Seigi vs. Cal

image-5-taboo-tattoo-ep-captcha
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Episode 11" url="" ]

Seigi became an older and much more experienced fighter throughout the series with the assistance of Izzy, Wiseman, and BB, most notably. Seigi is confronted with one of his most important fights in Taboo Tattoo. This fantastic battle takes place in episode eleven. Seigi has to stop Arya at all costs and in order to do so, he needs to find her secret location and put an end to her once and for all. The only problem is he’s presented with a super powerful obstacle by the name of Cal. No big deal right? Wrong! Cal, as you will find out later is an absolute killing machine. Despite Seigi’s training, he found himself in a world of trouble. It wasn’t long before Seigi got sliced deep from her blade. Luckily for Seigi he had BB inside of him and was able to restore himself with his tattoo. Fueled by rage and vengeance Seigi was able to turn the tide and bring Cal to her knees. During the climax, he took a couple shots but she made a critical mistake leaving herself open for Seigi to land a strong blow. This dropped her and ending a monumental fight scene.

4. Il's Assault on Lisa & Allies

image-4-taboo-tattoo-ep
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Episode 4" url="" ]

We’ve now made it past the midway point of the countdown and things are only going to heat up from here on in. Let’s talk about Il for a moment. She may be small in stature but she more than makes up for it when it comes to her savage instincts. Il is known as “Schrödinger's Cat” and is an ass-kicker in her own right. She exemplifies that at the beginning of episode four when she attacks the American specialists head on, by herself no less. She demonstrates her fearless nature and loyalty to Arya and it’s quite intimidating. Il literally drops in from a helicopter and proceeds to brutally slice and dice every human in that room. She handles them all without very much resistance. Keep in mind that these aren’t your average officers. The one true standout from the pack is Lisa, who gives Il a run for her money in this fast-paced battle. We’re pleasantly presented with swordplay, gunfire, explosions and even environmental interference. The action was fierce and soaked with blood. Ultimately Lisa gets bested by this seemingly inhuman beast and is taken away.

3. Izzy Transfers to Seigi's Class

image-3-taboo-tattoo-ep
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Episode 2" url="" ]

This number three selection is the final ecchi moment on this list. In comes to us by way of episode two. Not long into the episode do we find that Izzy transfers to Seigi’s school and ends up being in the same class as him. Her reasoning is to be able to stay closer to Seigi and keep tabs on him. Much to his dismay, she is immediately welcomed with open arms. When Izzy addresses Seigi in front of the students he draws the ire from every guy there, who is jealous that he knows such a cute girl. Seigi doesn’t see it that way however and he’s having a hard time processing this whole situation. Moreover, when the teacher leaves the room and Izzy gets up to slip a note in Seigi’s shirt, she teases the guys and tells them they’re in a unique relationship. After hearing that, the male students pick Seigi up and toss him out the classroom window, for goodness sakes! Touko and Izzy have a moment that ends up with Izzy squeezing and rubbing Touko’s breasts. That instance draws the attention of all the males in the room and they watch in amazement. The icing on the cake is when the teacher returns to the room and finds that every guy in the classroom is exhausted and spent from that show they were given. With all the bloody noses, ecchi bits and violent behavior this scene had everything you want.

2. Cal’s Sheer Dominance

image-2-taboo-tattoo-ep
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Episode 7" url="" ]

In episode seven Seigi and Touko teamed up with the Americans to tackle their biggest operation to date. They forged ahead with a formidable crew to potentially obtain and control more tattoos. Backed by the ever emotional “Colonel Sanders” yes, you read that right, the crew looked to thwart any enemy advances. A ravaging storm was taking place at that time, in what appeared to be an omen for the protagonists. The crew bombarded Cal and the rest of the villains by jumping out of a helicopter; in what was one of the more action oriented episodes of the series. The problem was, the American group had no idea what they were getting themselves into. Immediately Captain Johnson charged at Cal with the intentions of burning her with his “heat” only to run right into the edge of Cal’s blade chopping him in half. Shock set in for his teammates, but before he could crawl any further, Cal proceeded to chop his head off. Seigi then took a shot at Cal; he got sliced for his troubles, so Sanders and Izzy stepped in. They did fair better than the previous two, but Cal was just too much as she cut off Sanders' arm and disfigured his face all with her sword. This scene dripped with violence and it established a true threat.

1. Touko's Death

image-1-taboo-tattoo-ep
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Episode 8" url="" ]

We’ve now come to the end of the line. Our number one character moment was delivered to us courtesy of episode eight. This moment follows that action packed episode that seen Cal decimate her adversaries. In this unrelenting episode, we have chaos everywhere; Seigi is off being tortured by Arya. Cal is taking on BB, who she happens to have feelings for. And finally, Il is sabotaging the American air support. If it didn’t already look grim for the protagonists, saddle up because it got a much worse. Touko was on the hunt to find Seigi after she had been grounded from the helicopter that she was in. It was only natural for Touko to be concerned about Seigi since she considered herself to be his guardian. What she found was Seigi down on his knees feeling pain and despair, thanks to Arya. What we couldn’t account for was the next emotional moment. Touko wandered out from the trees and blissfully ran towards Seigi in slow motion. She made her way there with a smile on her face, unbeknownst to her that Il’s source manifested and was right behind her. Touko was completely devoured. The only thing left of her was her hair band that Seigi kept in remembrance of that fateful night. That was such a shocking and powerful moment. It unquestionably deserves the number one spot.

Final Thoughts

That concludes yet another list from Honey’s Anime. As everyone can see from the majority of the selections on this list, the highlights come in the form of violent battles and quirky comedic moments. Taboo Tattoo did offer other aspects for anime fans to enjoy, but we felt these were the most prominent. What did everyone think of this list? Was anybody shocked at all with some of these choices, or do you feel these moments sum up this series wholeheartedly? If we missed some of your favorite moments make sure to let us know in the comments section below.

[Information episodes=" 13 " aired=" April 2009 - June 2009 " post_id=""]

Starting off the list, we have K-On! For those who have already seen this anime, you’d know exactly why this anime made it onto the list. Aside from its moe-like style that seemed to appeal a large number of fans, the character development in this anime is also something note-worthy. It starts off with the life of the average, carefree, air-headed, Hirasawa Yui, who, despite having no experience whatsoever in terms of musical talents, decides to join her school’s band. Initially, the only motivation for her to join the Light Music Club was because she thought that light music meant "easy music". [Information episodes=" 26 " aired=" Apr 2016 - Sep 2016 " post_id=""]

Now as we all know that Show by Rock!! is an anime that features the protagonist that utilizes her musical abilities to defeat evil monsters. This unique plot can also be seen in Macross Delta, although the character cast and animation style very much differ from Show by Rock!!, but nonetheless, it became something unique in itself. With a futuristic mecha vibe, Macross Delta delivers an anime like no other. It perfectly blends some of the musical aspects into an action suspense anime, which is a rare combination of genre. It might seem weird at first, but once you go through a few early episodes then you’d get sucked into the plot. When the Earth is under threat and the human race was brought to the brink of extinction due to the Var Syndrome, a viral virus that spread like wildfire, turning people violent, that’s when Walkure, a tactical sound unit was established. Armed with their voices, they sing beautiful dazzling melodies to protect humans and save the Earth.

For some of you readers that are enthusiasts of combat sports whether it’d be the young and rising sport of MMA or in the realm of sports entertainment, Korakuen Hall is the place to check out. The small arena has been open since 1962 and still continues to go on strong. Due to its long legacy, it has been featured in combat sports anime titles such as the newest Tiger Mask series, which alludes to other real life Japanese professional wrestling organizations such as New Japan Pro Wrestling (which has also been home to real life Tiger Masks). If anything, just how Madison Square Garden in New York City is considered the mecca of professional wrestling in the U.S. (also home to the WWE’s inaugural WrestleMania Pay-Per-View), Korakuen Hall is often considered by Japanese wrestling enthusiasts as the Madison Square Garden of Japan.

[ad_top2 class="mt40"]

The Experience

image-1
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="hajime-no-ippo.net" url="http://www.hajime-no-ippo.net/pages/index.php?p=halls" ]

Though Korakuen Hall is famous for its numerous professional wrestling shows, it also hosts professional boxing, kickboxing, and mixed martial arts events. In the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, it held the boxing event. Even though anime portrays the Hall as larger than life, in person it is actually small and only holds up to 1,800 people (pretty surprising when you look at the number of people that can fit in Madison Square Garden)! Comparatively, it feels like a high school gym in most parts in the U.S. Thanks to its size, no matter where you sit, you feel as if you’re sitting at ringside. Some events will allow you to take pictures and videos, and there are some events that will disclaim on both posters and tickets that you cannot. Security guards are present in almost all seating sections enforcing these rules and for the safety of viewers. Some events will allow you to bring in food and drinks, some have an enforceable rule that they may be banned. Unfortunately, concession stands are not immediately available and very rarely do people walk around selling popcorn, hot dogs, or drinks like at other sports arenas.

image-2
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="wikipedia.org" url="https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E5%BE%8C%E6%A5%BD%E5%9C%92%E3%83%9B%E3%83%BC%E3%83%AB" ]

The ticket gate is on the outside on the first floor and after providing your ticket to the clerk, you are free to go inside and take an elevator to the third floor where the actual seating and ring are. Tickets can be purchased at the arena, on the website of the hosting promotion, or through ticket kiosks at Japanese convenience stores (very helpful if you can read Japanese). In some instances, you can buy tickets at boxing, kickboxing, and/or wrestling gyms depending on the event. Above the entrance to the seating is filled with some boxing memorabilia and is decorated with pictures of presently reigning national boxing champions. Due to its small size, access to your seat is pretty instant. The seat sizes are no different from an arena seat in the U.S., and leg and feet room are more than plenty even if you're sumo size. In addition to the big name, wrestling shows such as New Japan Pro Wrestling, independent shows such as WRESTLE-1 and Noah also frequently host shows here. So if any of you readers are in town and wish to see a wrestling event, this is the place to see a good mix of Japan’s current stars along with up and coming talent. Maybe the wrestlers you see that day may some day become the champion in Japan, or maybe be recruited into the WWE roster in the near future. Due to wrestling being worldwide, fans are likely to see performers from Japan, the U.S., Latin American countries, and most recently from China. For kickboxing, the hall is the home to a promotion called Krush, K-1’s (the premiere kickboxing organization in Japan and probably the entire world) minor league. A good number of present K-1 stars such as Segawa Takeru, Urabe Takahiro, and Kimura Minoru all made their names in Krush in this legendary arena before moving onto the big stage. Though the present K-1 does not feature women’s kickboxing, if you want to see if ladies can fight, thankfully Krush features women’s matches with rising stars such as champion Morimoto Kana. With kickboxers and MMA fighters from around the world, athletes could hail from Japan, China, Holland, Spain, and to other parts of Western Europe. If any of you viewers have watched a Japanese wrestling match or an actual combat sports event on TV or the Internet, you can notice that the Japanese audience tends to be much quieter than a western audience. Many real-life wrestlers and fighters tend to get culture shock and the reverse when they compete in Japan where it’s quiet, or where it gets really rowdy like in Las Vegas or Brazil. When Brazilian MMA star Antonio Minotauro Nogueira first fought in the UFC after establishing his name in Pride, Japan’s former premier MMA promotion, he was overwhelmed with how loud American audiences were compared to Japanese audiences. Even American competitors such as Rampage Jackson feel shocked compared to how fans react to both environments. In Japan, the fans treat the fight game as it were golf, but for a wrestling match, if there is a big spot (a spot is a wrestling term for a high flying technique) that excites the crowd, the audience will clap as if a putt were just made. With fighter entrances in all events, whenever the ring announcer introduces a combatant, the audience just lightly claps rather that hoot and holler. Even for highlight reel-worthy knockouts and submissions where western audiences would jump out of their seats, the reaction isn’t really all that big in Japan. This also goes as far as including hardcore wrestling matches that go as extreme as barbwire matches and other types of gimmick matches (that would NEVER be allowed in WWE and TNA) don’t really get the equivalent to a “holy s**t” chant you would see like in the old Extreme Championship Wrestling days (there are some matches in Japan where the objective is to get your opponent in a tank of piranhas!!!!). This is a Japanese way of showing their respect for the sport(s) and its participants. So if you are going to scream like crazy at a Japanese show like you would in America, we can promise you will get some very weird looks directed at you.

Since this place arena is home to Tokyo Dome City, there are numerous places that are instantaneously accessible. For starters, if you are more of a baseball fan in comparison to combat sports, Tokyo Dome is just right next door where you can watch the Tokyo Giants play. Also, there is the baseball museum and you can buy Tokyo Giants related merchandise. Sometimes big concerts are held at Tokyo Dome such as big name performers like EXILE.

On the first floor of the building where the Hall is, if you want to feel right at home, grab a meal at TGI Friday’s. And on the second floor, you can also enjoy breakfast, lunch, or dinner at Denny’s. As for the Hall itself, it may not have Wi-Fi access, but TGI Friday’s does have Wi-Fi friendly for overseas visitors. Around the TGI Friday’s, there are souvenir shops where you can buy any kind of wrestling merchandise. You want a mask like the real Tiger Mask? You want to look cool in a New Japan Pro Wrestling tracksuit? Or get something rad like a shirt of your favorite athletes? It’s all accessible on the first floor just by the ticket gate! And since the area is famous for its combat sports events, it also has some stores dedicated to buying combat sports gear and other memorabilia. Looking for some gloves whether they are for boxing or MMA? Or some Muay Thai shorts? Or do you want a cool karate gi? Or maybe some RVCA label hats? There are plenty to find! Also right around the corner is the Kodokan, a dojo/dormitory for those who are interested in learning the art of Judo. Also nearby is Tokyo Dome City, a small amusement park with some basic rides, a few arcades, a skating rink, laser tag, indoor rock climbing and many other fun activities. This small area outside the Hall within Tokyo Dome City may not be Disneyland but should keep you occupied for most of the day. If you’re looking for something more traditional, feel free to check out Korakuen Garden, where you can enjoy some nature in the big city! Last, on the Sobu line from Suidobashi station, Akihabara is just a couple of stations away!

Final Thoughts

We can promise if you are at all a fan of the art of fighting, this is the place to check out for any kind of event. This place has virtually everything you can think of. It is a good mix of home, modern Japan, and traditional Japan. There is so much to enjoy and a majority of the area is within a reasonable budget. Are you likely to catch your favorite stars after a show? Probably. Sometimes some stars are available for pictures and autographs before or after the event. Some posters will disclaim if there are meet and greets before or after the show! So if you’re in Tokyo and looking for something fun to check out, check out Korakuen Hall and the rest of Tokyo Dome City!

[Information_manga volumes="39" published="July 2003 - July 2012" mangaka="Saruwatari, Tetsuya" genres="Action, Martial Arts, Sports, Seinen"]

Tough looks at the life of mixed martial arts specialist Kiichi, whose father was nearly killed in a fight by his brother Kiryu and Kiichi desperately tries to restore him back to full health. Before he could spend more time with his father however, a major fighting tournament is conducted and he finds himself squaring off against opponents with various martial art styles. Now Kiichi must put all of his pain behind him and fight his way to the top to claim the championship. It’s not often that you come across a manga that specializes in mixed martial arts, since the style itself is still flourishing and making a name for itself in the world. Tough really provides a very deep and philosophical view on the various martial arts that are included in the series, and provide the reader with insightful information about styles and their history. It’s a lot of punching, kicking, and blood stained gloves in this very action packed series. The story is a continuation of Koukou Tekkenden Tough which focused on the much more younger Kiichi prior to his rise to fame, so be sure to read that to know more about Kiichi’s life.

Now with his mind set on transferring out, it seems like the 3 Dragons of the school aren’t willing to let that happen. This ecchi martial arts comedy looks at Rintaro desperately trying to keep his hormones in check as he must team up with 3 curvaceous women who will stop at nothing to excite him, but also put an end to all of the chaos ensuing on school grounds. At first you’ll probably be scratching your head at all of the foolish antics that happen in the beginning, but once you start to see Rintaro in action with his overpowered Koei Sougetsu, things start to get interesting. It’s a lot like Ranma ½ but with a ton more oppai, lots of butt kicking, and more laughter to keep you coming back for more.

[Information_manga volumes="11" published="March 2014 - Present " mangaka="Itagaki, Keisuke" genres="Action, Martial Arts, Shounen"]

After an incredible conclusive battle that pitted Baki up against his father, Baki finds himself bored and in need of new action. So he decides to continue fighting in an underground syndicate and devotes himself entirely to leveling up his ability, but nothing seems to excite him as he constantly yawns during bouts and shows no effort. Things start to turn around once the Prime Minister of Japan enters the fray and attempts to clone the legendary Musashi Miyamoto, widely considered to be of the fathers of martial arts, to take Baki on in a battle. For those who haven’t read Grappler Baki, we highly recommend doing so to get an incredibly detailed backstory on Baki’s life, before he became the beast that he is today. Bones are broken, backs are snapped in two, and jaws are turned into jelly in this truly amazing continuation of the Baki franchise. While it may seem weird that Baki has to go up against a cloned Miyamoto, it’s still full of excitement that will keep you hungry for the next battle. If you’re a fan of Baki, and Hanma Baki then this sequel should be a great way to bring the story together, and it really maintains its incredible realism pertaining to the various fighting styles which is sure to excite the enthusiasts out there. Be sure to check out the upcoming anime of this series as well, which is slated to air real soon!

However this friend has a deep dark secret that he’s held from Meguru for years, and now Meguru is about to find out. If a realistic representation of the mixed martial arts realm is what you’re looking for, All Rounder Meguru is your pick. While much of Meguru’s back story is somewhat vague in comparison to his friend Takashi and other supporting characters, it’s Meguru’s determination to overcome his weak points by self reflection that make this a winning piece. You remove all of the over exaggeration that you find in other titles and what you’re left with is pure passion, devotion, and a willingness to exceed everyone’s expectations to become the best fighter in the ring.

Minoru attends a college that’s reputable for its dedication to sports rather than focusing on academic success. He tries his luck out as a gymnast alongside his good friend Nana, but is immediately shunned by his peers so he quickly makes his exit. One evening after practice Ryuuji witnesses Minoru being attacked and bullied by his peers, so he immediately comes to rescue and takes care of the issue quickly. Totally inspired by Ryuuji’s karate prowess Minoru decides to take up karate with him, but along the way he meets new friends who reveal their dark pasts with one revealing a shocking death and is determined to take revenge. Minoru enters a new environment which at first is totally foreign to him, but once he learns about his friends and what they had to go through, he grows closer to them since he could somehow relate to their pain. Motoko is a young girl who must deal with her triple personality, which had been placed on her through her 3 adoptive fathers who taught her various training methods. Each personality is equipped with her own martial art but when she finds herself engaged in battle, she simply doesn’t know which one to choose. Motoko must now come up with solutions to somehow master these techniques and put them all to good use before she finds herself flat on the mat. Motoko is clearly very traumatized by her earlier experiences growing up, since it’s severely affected the way that she fights in battle but she constantly strives to combine everything together to become the strongest fighter possible. There are moments of laughter since the main male lead is so weak willed and Motoko has to come his rescue majority of the time, but it’s the great mixture of action and laughter that truly elevates the experience while reading and keep you involved in the fight scenes. You’ll truly fall in love with each of Motoko’s personalities because they’re all epic in some way or another, especially her Fujiko persona.

4. Souten no Ken

[Information_manga volumes="22" published="May 2001 - August 2010" mangaka="Buronson | Hara Tetsuo" genres="Action, Adventure, Drama, Martial Arts, Mature, Seinen"]

The story takes place in the early 1930’s of Japan and China. Kasumi Kenshiro is forced to leave his current teaching job, in order to settle a beef with a gang that just can’t seem to let go of their old grudges. Putting his teaching aside, Kenshiro must now fold up his sleeves and take to the streets as he must now learn new techniques from a mysterious old man that will help to guide him on his treacherous quest for the truth. Surprising that Souten no Ken is the prequel to the famed Hokuto no Ken series because it released almost two decades after the original, but it still maintains all of the high flying action you’d expect from the series. This manga reminds us of the very early Bruce Lee films where one man must now try to restore peace to a corrupt city riddled with crime, and must use everything his master taught him to ensure his close friends don’t suffer further pain. Everything down to the very traditional chinese style of clothing for that era is used with sheer detail, with the techniques heavily illustrated to show incredible realism. A different era, a different reason to kill, but in the end it’s still Kenshiro kicking arse and taking names for the sake of humanity.

Natsuo is one of those rare specimens that can pick up any sport and master it with relative ease, but because of this gift she often finds herself bored and in need of challenge. That all changes when receives a special invitation to join a martial arts club run by a very upbeat young girl. Out of irritation of this girls suspiciously upbeat attitude, Natsuo decides to accept the invitation just so that she could wipe the smile off of her face, but she’s about to receive another surprise that will change her outlook forever. It’s always great to see female leads demonstrate brute strength and dexterity in a world that’s usually fixated on overpowered men, and perverted antics. Natsuo is arrogant yet she backs it up with her incredible skills, but you realize that much of her facade is all due to the fact that she’s a loner and she just wants to be noticed. She carries a lot of heavy burdens from her past which conflict with her current life, such as emotional and mental issues but this is what creates the impact to create a powerful story. Every one of Natsuo’s fights are exceptional because she’s not only fighting for pride, but she’s fighting to overcome her pain and so many of us can relate to that.

[Information_manga volumes="72" published="September 1999 - November 2014" mangaka="Kishimoto, Masashi" genres="Action, Adventure, Comedy, Martial Arts, Shounen"]

Naruto is arguably considered to be one of the top manga of all time and we don’t disagree, simply because Naruto showcases not only martial arts but also their historical backstory to provide some authenticity behind it. From Ninjutsu to Karate, a lot of various styles are demonstrated in a very provoking fashion with all of the high flying acrobatics that we’ve come to love. Of course much of the series is exaggerated, but it’s that added flare that brings out the art even more, and tie that in with the emotional events that take place and you have a wonderful story. Sadly the series came to a very emotional end in 2014 but you can clearly see how much of a global impact the series has had on people, and with every anime convention you go to you’re bound to see a horde of Naruto cosplay around. Spin offs such as Boruto have now taken over and continue to bring the hype for one of the best mangas out there, so if you’re looking to continue with Naruto’s legacy then be sure to watch his son in action.

[Information_manga volumes="61" published="August 2002 - September 2014" mangaka="Matsuena, Syun" genres="Action, Comedy, Drama, Ecchi, Martial Arts, Shounen"]

Kenichi has a passion for books and just can’t seem to put them down, but because of this he’s often bullied by others around him at school. One day a new transfer student named Miu enrolls into his class and the two immediately clicked, as both were seeking new friendship. While getting to know her, Kenichi comes to know of her incredible strength which sparks his interest in her even more and his willingness to fight alongside her. This is the martial arts manga that fans of the genre should definitely read, because it incorporates just about everything into one package and manages to retain realism at the same time. Kenichi at times is a complete moron but it’s his total dedication to master his craft and increase his power that have you rooting for him. What truly sells this manga though is just how pure everything feels, pertaining to the true hand-to-hand combat that you experience while reading and there’s no fireballs, lightning bolts, or any godlike ability of that sort. It’s just true, honest, and magnificent martial arts at its finest.

Expecting...dinner to be ready. The first entry on our list is from Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo, in episode 7, during a conversation between Sorata and his sister when he tells her that he has some important things that he needs to do, so he cannot return home with her just yet. His sister takes this the wrong way and thinks that the important things are the girls he’s been hanging out with at school. As, earlier that day, a series of suggestive situations have led to his sister believing that Sorata has been doing unmentionable things with Mashiro and Nanami, when suddenly Mashiro appears holding her belly and saying “I’m expecting…” Quick to jump to conclusions Sorata’s sister believes that his brother has impregnated her and lunges at him. Only to find out that she was only going to say “…dinner to be ready”. This moment is one of the many hilarious moments found in this episode and series, however Sorata’s sister’s reaction to Mashiro’s coincidental choice of words and gesture is what makes us really laugh out loud.

9. Soul Eater

[Information episodes=" 51 " aired=" Apr. 2008 - Mar. 2009 " post_id=""]

The power of friendship. The next comedic moment comes from Soul Eater, during episode 6 when Death the Kid enrolls at the school. Black Star won’t allow anyone to outshine him, so he challenges Death the Kid to a fight. Amidst the battle, Black star and Soul eventually decide to go at it seriously and join together in battle as one. The funny thing about this scene is the amount of confidence and power that the duo boasts, which even Death the Kid admires for a moment, until they mess up the combo and Souls ends up slicing Black Stars head. Having never partnered up before, adding to the stupidity, is that Black Star can’t even lift Soul up and end up hurting each other further. Then comes the over dramatic, bromance split up and re-uniting cries of friendship as they run to hug each other, only to be an easier target for Death the Kid to shoot ‘accidentally’ as his finger ‘slips”. This scene is funny because of the two idiotic characters messing up as a result of their mouths being bigger than their apparent skills, and then not taking the fight seriously and messing around the whole time, which leads to them getting their butts kicked. ‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬

Backdoor infiltration. (Gone Wrong) Up next is a scene from Kore wa Zombie Desu ka? In this scene from the OVA: Ayumu, Eu and Seraphim are trying to sneak into the vampire ninja liar to obtain a scroll. Whilst trying to climb across a rope to the building, Eu accidentally sneezes and sets off an intruder trap that fires bamboo spikes, miraculously on target at Ayumu, straight into his buttocks. What’s even funnier is that Ayumu has literally no protection against the bamboo spikes as he is just wearing a leotard, by credit of Eu. One of the spikes pierces into his nether regions and somehow weirdly turns him on. As Ayumu arrives at the other side to turn off the alarm, he changes into what Seraphim describes as a new level of disgusting as Ayumu twirls, prances and laughs randomly. The fact that Ayumu is a zombie that can withstand injury is part of what makes this scene so funny. We know he can’t die, but we take joy in watching his misfortune as he is stabbed in the butt and then, to top it all off, with a strange and unexpected reaction.

7. Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai! (Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions!)

The Dark Flame Master. This comedic moment occurs during episode 1 of Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai!, when Yuuta first meets Rikka and finds out that she had discovered the truth of Yuuta’s embarrassing secret. One that has resulted in his moving to another school in another city to rid himself of the stigma, Dark Flame Master. That Rikka is the one who has found out about his past, and not anyone else, is what makes this scene hilarious. The fact that Yuuta wants to find out desperately where she found out about it is what makes this scene so funny. Yuuta’s random tactics in getting Rikka to spill the truth, as she rambles on about her powers. Yuuta utilizes anything in the nurse’s room and eventually finds out that he was careless earlier at the gym. He attempts to get her to shut her mouth, only to see that she won’t let it go. This continues throughout the series, as Yuuta endlessly tortures Rikka in a cute way to get her to shut up. There are many short funny moments within the series in relation to Yuuta and also Nibutani’s reactions after the embarrassment is revealed, which makes this anime one of the funniest short comedy-moment-filled shows out there.

Separation withdrawal symptoms. Nearing the halfway mark comes No game No life, the hilarious moment happens in episode 2 when Sora and Shiro are separated for the first time ever, that we see in the anime. We have seen them together most of the time and rarely spend any time away from one another, until Stephanie kicks Shiro into the next room for accidentally falling onto her and touching her breasts. Their reactions are completely unexpected; we assume that Sora and Shiro are just really close siblings, and not so much in the sense that they literally cannot be separated. They both become reclusive, cuddled up like a baby, Sora, apologizes in extreme fear about the situation. Whilst Shiro turns into a helpless and lifeless ghost, who can’t function without her brother. However, when they are able to see each other, their symptoms suddenly vanish as they reunite like they had been separated for a long time when it has been, in fact, only a few seconds.

Shrine maiden chase. This scene from the Nisekoi OVA is during the New Year festival at a shrine where the characters are working. Raku becomes possessed by spirits that give him bad luck for the whole day, and it is up to the girls to save him. The priestess of the shrine gets the girls to exorcise him with various methods that all failed. With time running out before the New Year, they resort to the only other way to save him, by forcing him to drink holy water, mouth to mouth. The girls, eager to kiss him, load up with mouths full of holy water and charge at Raku who freaks out about the situation. They end up chasing him through the shrine until he runs into the bell striker…. head first. This is a hilarious moment as it plays on the fact that Raku has no idea what has been going on the whole day, after countless moments of bad luck and seeing the girls acting strange. Then during the night, suddenly getting chased by the girls doing more weird things, only to be struck in the head as a result of another unfortunate turn of events.

Sorry I can’t carry the coffin as I just broke my own arm. Nearing the top of this list comes Gintama, at episode 231 during the funeral, when they discover that the restaurant owner’s ghost rises out of the coffin and begins to curse people for disrespecting his funeral. Their friends get caught up in the mess and get their souls consumed, after Gin tries to escape. In order to get back their souls, they decide to pay respects by staying until the end of the funeral. The next moment is hilarious because of the ridiculousness of it. The fact that both Gin and Hijikata had the same ridiculous idea, where Gin breaks his own arm and Hijikata dislocates his own shoulder, rather than carry the coffin, is what makes it so funny.. What’s even funnier is that they do it impulsively and quickly, right in front of Gran’s eyes, and then lie directly to her face. It just makes the owner even angrier and they are forced to carry the coffin with broken limbs. The ludicrosity of this scene is what makes it one of the most comedic moments in anime, as one would not expect that level of stupidity from the two characters.

3. Angel Beats!

Propulsion desks. In Angel Beats! episode 6, during a test that the brigade has to take, the team are ordered to create a distraction in order to manipulate the test results. Hinata fails miserably to distract anyone with his nonsense and forces Yuri to activate the hidden jetpack she hid under his seat earlier, forcing him to fly and hit the roof to create the needed distraction. As the tests continue, the others create distractions that are also of no use, which again forces the activation of the jet pack. Later, when Oyama tries to distract Angel and fails to do it with a weak confession, Hinata finds it amusing, waiting for the moment Oyama hits the roof. However, inadvertently, the jet pack seat activates under Hinata’s own seat, forcing him to fly head first into the roof. The unexpected result is what makes this scene so funny, from the ridiculousness of a jet pack under the seat, to Hinata getting it twice, without knowing about any of it.

Accidental punch into the nether region. This comedic scene from One Punch Man happens during a fight between Saitama and Sonic in episode 4, as he unleashes his full force in trying to take down Saitama, but to no avail, he doesn’t leave a scratch. However, during one of his jumps, Saitama accidentally lands his punch in the wrong place. What makes this scene hilarious is that at this point, we know that Saitama’s fist is the strongest thing in the apparent universe, and to land on it with his nether regions…well we don’t need to spell out what happens next. The fact that this scene is in slow motion makes it that extra bit funnier as it even gives time for Saitama to apologize, knowing that it was already too late. With just a touch, Sonic is defeated and is forced to retreat after sustaining immense injuries from a one sided battle in which he cannot even come close to hurting Saitama. This scene had many of us rolling on the floor with laughter and we’re sure you’d agree that this is one of the funniest scenes as of recent.

Kakashi's mask reveal. Finally at number one, the funniest moment of them all is… the unmasking of Kakashi featured in Naruto. This hilarious moment is within episode 101 where Naruto, Sasuke and Sakura become really curious about Kakashi and decide to unveil his mask to see what he is hiding underneath. The reason he always wears a mask is unknown, but not even the people closest to him have ever seen his face. This episode is filled with many funny antics and attempts to get Kakashi to remove the mask, but the funniest moment has to be at the very end, when all the anticipation is building up to the moment that he decides to reveal what’s underneath the mask. After all the trio’s attempts, it seemed that all they really needed was just to ask. The level of anticipation after wanting to prove their predictions is intense, as Kakashi slowly pulls down his mask to unveil…. another mask. The ridiculousness of the whole situation and the fact that they will never find out about his identity is what makes this scene the most hilarious one ever. After all the time and effort they put into finding out, quickly shot down in a moment when they thought they were finally going to find out. It is a moment that will be remembered in history for many years to come.

Kono Bijutsubu ni wa Mondai ga Aru! is a slice of life romantic comedy that showcases all the awkward experiences and shenanigans of students from an art club. This anime brought a wonderful cast of lively characters that presented a strong chemistry between them. Each character had a distinguishable personality and it really built on strengthening the unrequited love that Usami has for Uchimaki. As you will come to notice the majority of these moments stem from Usami’s emotions. It’s quite possible that Kono Bijutsubu ni wa Mondai ga Aru! might have flown under some people's anime radar this past Summer. If you were some of the lucky ones who did get to view this wonderful anime you probably have a good idea on what is going to be listed in this article. With that being said, let’s get down to business, shall we.

10. Usami's Vivid Imagination

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Episode 7" url="" ]

Our introductory Kono Bijutsubu ni wa Mondai ga Aru! character moment is brought to us by way of episode seven. Usami is a love-struck girl who obviously has feelings for her fellow art club member, Uchimaki. As you will find out in this countdown, there are numerous moments between these two. Usami meets up with Uchimaki at the art club with intentions of finishing first place in a contest. Earlier in the show, Uchimaki was being mistreated by another student and his art talent was being put down. Usami became incensed and vowed that they would beat this guy in the competition. When Usami arrives, Uchimaki is already hard at work on his painting. Usami makes a comment that Uchimaki is hopeless and reminds him she is not his mom. Uchimaki retorts by saying, age-wise, Usami would be more like his wife. That immediately gives Usami a pleasant scenario in her head that involves the two as a couple. The best part comes in the dream sequence when Usami asks Uchimaki if he would like dinner, a bath or sex. Although sex is never actually said, it’s implied. Uchimaki decides on sex which leads to Usami, in real life, literally becoming a steaming hot mess with Uchimaki noticing a temperature change in the room.

9. Art Club Pillow Fight

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Episode 6" url="" ]

This next moment also involves Usami and Uchimaki, but with a slight twist. During episode six, we’re introduced to a new character by the name of Imari. She is a charming girl who garners attention from nearly everybody in her class. Imari and Uchimaki begin to bond after he realizes that she’s into the same anime and manga that he enjoys. The two decided to have a talk about their interests outside together, but they weren’t alone. Usami caught the ending of their conversation. Needless to say, Usami became jealous. The next portion of the episode seen Usami disconcerted, while lying on the club couch. This confused the other club member, most notably, Colette and the club president. No one knew what to do with Usami until Uchimaki came in and got one heck of a reaction. Uchimaki was initially unsuccessful at making her talk but what he did get was a pillow thrown at his face. The president hilariously quips “that pillow is expensive” instead of worrying about Uchimaki. Uchimaki surprisingly retaliates after being called an idiot, by throwing it back at Usami. They exchange the pillow with force, back and forth, much to the chagrin of the president.

8. The Clubs Misunderstandings

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Episode 5" url="" ]

This next moment is the first portion of episode five called “Mistake Train.” At the beginning of the episode, Usami and Uchimaki are drawing the model in front of them of a male head. After the two of them leave to the art supply store, Colette is left alone in the art club. Playful as ever, Colette decides to paint the head to make him look “healthier.” Upon completion, she worries that the rest of the club will not like what she had done. In a frenzied state, she takes the head and hides it and then proceeds to sprint out of the room. Tachibana shows up and after viewing a couple of the clubs drawings, she finds a box and pulls out the head. Usami and Uchimaki come back to find Tachibana out cold. Uchimaki hysterically looks for a manga to help him figure out what to do. He gets spooked after realizing that he needs to give her mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. In his attempt at doing so, the president sees what’s going on and stops Colette from entering the room. They discuss what had happened but many of them are confused and misinterpreted the situation. This scene was effective at showing the hilarity of a mischievous situation where misunderstandings led to wild imaginations.

7. Treasure Hunt

7-kono-bijutsubu-ni-wa-mondai-ga-aru-ep-8-capture
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Episode 8" url="" ]

Continuing on with the countdown we come to the episode that involves a treasure hunt. In the secret room that Usami and Uchimaki found during the first half of the episode; Imari and Uchimaki are in there sharing stories and reading manga. Usami is off in the distance studying and complains that the two are being too loud. So Imari and Uchimaki comply and reduce the noise from the room. Unfortunately for them, they can’t seem to win because Usami worries that they are doing something indecent and tells them not to be so quiet. Usami’s ambivalence was fantastic. In the room, Imari has a treasure map fall out of a manga. The three of them gather together and decide to take part in a treasure hunt. The map leads them to several places including the male’s bathroom and outside the school. Usami ultimately deciphers the riddles and finds the treasure. Then comes the best part of the hunt…. Their reward! Expecting to split the treasure three ways, they open up the box only to find an erotic book. This hunt was built up so well and the payoff was wonderfully done.

6. Lolimaki

6-kono-bijutsubu-ni-wa-mondai-ga-aru-ep-2-capture
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Episode 2" url="" ]

Number six on the countdown takes place early on in the season. Episode two is where this takes us. To set this moment up, we need to highlight a couple scenes that took place prior to this episode. Usami and Uchimaki were out on a stroll one day when they ran into a little girl who couldn’t find her mom. Usami was unsuccessful at being able to comfort her, however Uchimaki was able to. He showed her a sketch of what her mother looks like. From then on Usami decided that Uchimaki wasn’t a bad person. After that, Uchimaki meets up with a girl from his school that has a crush on him. She expresses her feelings towards him but much to her dismay, Uchimaki rejects her. Keeping in mind that Usami and the president have a watchful eye on the situation behind some bushes. This brings us to the moment where this entire layout comes to fruition. Like before, Usami and Uchimaki are seen walking home together and they spot another young girl. As she heads towards them, Uchimaki stops and claims it's “love at first sight.” Usami was relieved to find out that Uchimaki was making a comment about how cute the girl's strap on her bag was. She can rest easy knowing he isn’t a “Lolimaki.”

5. Indirect Kiss

5-kono-bijutsubu-ni-wa-mondai-ga-aru-ep-3-capture
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Episode 3" url="" ]

We have now reached the medial portion of the countdown. We hope you have enjoyed the list thus far; it’s only going to get better from here. This moment takes place during the latter portion of episode three. It involves Usami and Uchimaki (naturally) as well as three of Usami’s friends. They are joined in the art club room after a brief competition between Usami’s friends. During the aftermath, Kaori is sent to get drinks for everybody and this is when things start to heat up. Upon returning, Kaori hands drinks to everybody. The problem is, she finds out from Usami that Uchimaki can’t drink fizzy drinks. Kaori offers up her drink, that she drank out of, in a trade. Uchimaki accepts as Usami spits out her drink in shock. Usami doesn’t want them sharing an indirect kiss. Usami steals the drink off of Uchimaki before he could put his lips to the can, and proceeds to drink the entire content of the can. In retaliation, Uchimaki jumps up and pounds back Usami’s drink that she left unattended. She pretended that she didn’t like the fact that they shared an indirect kiss; oh what a scene!

4. The Indecent Book

4-kono-bijutsubu-ni-wa-mondai-ga-aru-ep-9-capture
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Episode 9" url="" ]

This moment is a continuation of moment number seven. At the start of episode nine, Imari tells Colette of an evil grimoire called the Necronomicon, which is hidden in the school. Colette is frightened by this and tells Tachibana about it. After receiving their reward, the erotic book is left for the president and Uchimaki to fight over. As the two argue over who will get to take it home, Usami walks in on them. She is disgusted by that book and wants to get rid of it before they get caught. Tachibana storms into the art club and the president hastily moves the book to the secret room. She informs the club that she is on the lookout for a dangerous book. Misunderstanding the situation the three of them worry even more about getting caught. Half of the episode consists of the three of them playing keep away from Tachibana and Colette. After several close calls, eventually their luck runs out and Colette gets her hands on the book. She opens it up just as Tachibana walks in on them. Everyone is embarrassed as Uchimaki gets blamed for that obscene book.

3. The Study Session

3-kono-bijutsubu-ni-wa-mondai-ga-aru-ep-10-capture
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Episode 10" url="" ]

Episode ten brings yet another awkward moment to the mix. While the club is gathered in the art room, a disappointed Tachibana walks in and informs Colette and Uchimaki that they have average exam scores. Usami isn’t overly concerned about Uchimaki’s predicament until he comes to the realization that he might have to stop coming to the club if he doesn’t improve his scores. Usami isn’t having any of that and she makes it her mission to get their scores back up to a respectable number. Usami decides the best bet would be for the two to come over to her house and study over the weekend. After a disastrous start, Uchimaki begins to get tired and is led by Usami to her bed. She lays him down under the rule that he only gets to sleep for thirty minutes. After the thirty minutes are up, Usami instructs Colette to wake Uchimaki up. Several minutes go by and there is no sign of them. Usami goes up to check on the situation, only to find Colette in her bed sleeping with Uchimaki. Usami goes ballistic and they receive one rude awakening. But hey, they both improved their scores!

2. The Red Paint Incident

2-kono-bijutsubu-ni-wa-mondai-ga-aru-ep-2-capture
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Episode 2" url="" ]

Rounding out the list with our number two spot, we have an uneasy situation set up between, Uchimaki, the art club president and Usami. This would be our second moment from episode two. This time, however, it takes place immediately at the beginning of the episode. Uchimaki and the president get themselves in a very sticky situation early on. Uchimaki accidently knocks over a can of red paint and it spills all over the carpet. This was then followed up by the president accidently knocking Usami’s painting from the chair and falling into red paint. A series of accidents lead the boys to try and comprehend what had just happened. Hearing Usami off in the distance, Uchimaki is sent out of the room to delay her. The president’s solution was to lie on the painting in the red paint, acting as if he got murdered. Humorously enough, Uchimaki was quick to pretend like they were playing a murder mystery game. The tension was at its boiling point when the president wrote in paint, to Uchimaki, that he needed to take a leak. Eventually, Usami found out when she fell and landed on the president. Needless to say, she wasn’t pleased with what had transpired.

1. Uchimaki Loves Usami

1-kono-bijutsubu-ni-wa-mondai-ga-aru-ep-12-capture
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Episode 12" url="" ]

We’ve made it to our top character moment in Kono Bijutsubu ni wa Mondai ga Aru! This memorable scene did not show up in the anime until the season finale. Episode twelve is where you can find this gem, as it’s still very fresh in our minds. The moment starts off with Imari and Uchimaki outside sitting on a bench as they discuss their feelings for “Usami.” It finally looked like Uchimaki had fallen in love with Usami. Imari suggested that he should tell her how he feels. Little did they know that Usami was watching over them once again. They meet up in the art club and Uchimaki confesses his love, but not to the Usami standing in front of him. Dumbfounded by this turn of events, Usami says that she overheard Imari and Uchimaki talking about her. Uchimaki clarifies that this character that he has fallen in love with happens to share the same name as Usami. It’s hilarious because he’s able to shut down every question she has with a proper explanation. First off, what a great way to tease the audience! Secondly, poor Usami, we feel sorry for her. She has been on a rollercoaster of emotion ever since episode one. Finally, despite all the hints, we never did see Uchimaki commit to a “3D girl.”

Final Thoughts

That concludes our look at the top 10 Kono Bijutsubu ni wa Mondai ga Aru! character moments. When we were compiling all the best moments, we knew there was going to be some left out. It was only natural since this anime produced many outrageously memorable moments. The romance and comedy were the selling point, no question. We feel we captured the essence of this anime in this article. We hope you felt the same way. On that note, if there were any moments that we missed, be sure to let us know in the comments section below. We’d love to discuss this anime with you!

The Straw That Broke The Camel’s Back

Nagareboshi

Jinkou is finally getting a real game! After their endless practices and what seems like Gion just sitting on the sidelines forever, they get a real game with their coach calling out the club advisor for being useless. The game begins and the opponents are being vicious and messing with the players. Poor Iwashimizu is the bearer of the burnt of their attacks after he is recognized by the other team’s members. One by one, they launch petty attacks against him, but he stays strong until he kicks and the ball goes out of bounds. At this point he actually breaks. Iwashimizu loses it and snaps at the whole team forcing the coach to pull him out of the game and swap in another player! It seems as if the fire has finally been lit under the butts of Jinkou’s rugby team, but I wonder how it will all actually play out. ALL OUT has been great as a sports anime for not being a generic one. I am certainly glued to my screen for what happens next.

Tsukki’s Return

Coming up to the end of this ten-episode season, things are more intense than ever in Haikyuu!!. Karasuno is in a pinch, with Shiratorizawa having just scored a match point. With everything hanging in the balance, every single moment is packed full of tension - one wrong move and this is the end of the line for Karasuno. That’s when Tsukishima suddenly returns, back from the infirmary. He’s been such a key player this season, seeing him jog towards the court with that determined look on his face was like a ray of hope. I may or may not have screamed with joy. Either way, with Tsukki back in the game and just two episodes left, I can’t wait to see how the climax of this season of Haikyuu!! plays out.

Shoujo Tropes

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Watashi ga Motete Dousunda Episode 8" url="" ]
Jenangelx3

Watamote really excels compared to Hatsukoi Monster when it comes to making fun of shoujo tropes. In episode 8, Nanashima is so obsessed with Serinuma that he even sees Serinuma in his delusions, resulting in his basic assaulting of Serinuma. This is such a cliche when it comes to shoujo anime and manga. Someone is always forcing themselves onto the main character! It even happens in Hatsukoi Monster. However, what’s weird in Watashi ga Motete Dousunda is that fact that this moment gets really serious in comparison to other scenes in the anime that mock shoujo tropes. Like, my gosh, I understand the severity of having someone forced upon you, but why include the trope if it gets too serious to mock? Although, they did try to relieve it with a weird power rangers like scene.

[balloon_speech align="left" text="Um….Watamote got a little too serious for me. Could Nanashima be any more of a buzzkill?" image="honey-surprised2"]

More than three deaths...

This bloody anime is coming to an end, and this ninth episode had Calamity Mary's final destination, Sister Nana's suicide (after Winter Prison's death) and the unexpected death of Top Speed. And although every fan of the series sure remains in shock with each death so far, watching this happy witch stabbed in the back was a hard blow, especially when we confirmed the theory that many had: she needed to live "only six months more" to see her child born. If someone still believed this was a "cute" anime, certainly last week’s episode made it clear that anything could happen. Even killing a pregnant teenager... off guard and stabbed in the back. As if that were not enough, the rules of the game have changed again. How will this macabre game end?

[Editorial Tuesday] Lack of Strong Female Leads in Anime

[sourceLink asin="B00C3BRDYA" asin_jp="" text="" url="" ]

Introduction

There have been many female leads throughout the history of anime. They are primarily featured in romance anime, though they have been known to appear in action anime or sub-genres like Mahou Shoujo anime. However, a distressing trend that appears throughout that very same history is how pathetic many female anime leads are. While the aforementioned leads definitely have their good and bad points, many of them end up being completely reliant on another character, a white knight character, to save them from their distress. While this is fine in moderate doses, it is an overindulgence that happens more often than not within the industry. How often have we seen a female that’s the top tier badass at the start of the anime need saving by the second half of it? That’s why, here at Honey’s Anime we want to discuss the Lack of Strong Female Leads in Anime.

[ad_top2 class="mt40"]

Body of Paragraph

The Exceptions

Psycho-Pass Capture
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Psycho-Pass Ep 1" url="" ]

You might be impassioned at this point to point out how wrong the premise of this article is. Haven’t there been strong females who can more or less stand on their own? Haven’t their desperate struggles reached the hearts of thousands? That is definitely true. However, the problem here is that they are the exception to the rule. The rule being that a female will need to be saved at some point and be completely helpless while that’s happening. This isn’t the worst thing ever though. While they are currently a minority, they do present a good example of what a strong female lead can contribute to the overall narrative of the story. Take for example Akane Tsunemori from the anime Psycho Pass. While Akane does have support throughout the movie, whether emotional or physical, her character is fleshed out enough that she is able to stand on her own. As a strong female lead, she is able to lend her own perspective to the situation and the way she reacts is significantly different from the male lead, Shinya Kogami. While Akane takes her time to consider the matter, Shinya is more head strong in the way he does things. That is not to say that a female lead is better than a male one, her patience could be interpreted as indecisiveness in the appropriate situation after all. All it means is that there is something different, and variety is the spice to life.

Side Characters Who Could Have Been

Shakugan no Shana wallpaper
[sourceLink asin="B000Y44XHI" asin_jp="" text="" url="" ]

There are many good female characters, not leads, that frequent the sphere of anime and some of them could have easily been made into very strong female leads that would lead the anime into a much different direction than the one it had taken. Take for example Shana of Shakugan no Shana. While the show is named after her, the main character of the series is decidedly Yuuji Sakai. At the start, while Yuuji is weak and feeble, Shana is the one who has to save the day while he uselessly stands at the side cheering her on. As the show goes on and Yuuji gets stronger, while Shana becomes more and more side lined until the end, where she is so weak that Yuuji completely tears her apart and takes her to a faraway place. That’s quite a waste of a good character right there. While Shana could suffer defeat, it could be better served to make her stronger. This would lead to her being on par with the power level of Yuuji, or at least close. This would lend to her character being able to act as a direct roadblock to his ambitions, or if she chooses to side with him, lend synergy to their characters being able to fight side by side. Shana doesn’t have to replace him, but her role could’ve been larger and closer to being the female lead rather than a damsel in distress.

Change in Dynamics

So how different would it be if the main character of an anime is a female character instead of a male? Wouldn’t the outcome be basically the same if their circumstances were the same, except they had a male love interest? That’s not entirely true. While many of their actions could be motivated by the same things, such as rejection by their peers, family getting killed etc, the way they ultimately react could be different. At the end of the day, males and females are fundamentally different. One is not better than the other. Each has their own strengths and flaws. In a strictly biological sense, a male is strong than a female, but a female is more flexible. A female has a better pain tolerance, but a male has more physical stamina. Small differences such as this can ultimately change the character that is presented, in a very butterfly effect kind of way. While not a perfect example of the above, season 2 of Sword Art Online presents a good dichotomy between males and females. In the first half of the season, it follows Kirito as he solves the mystery of the killings in Gun Gale Online. In the second half, it follows Asuna as she travels Alfheim Online by herself. While the situations and the character’s backgrounds are different, how they react on their own shows how differently a male and female can react when a situation is presented to them. Remember, it’s not about which is better, but increasing the variety that we get from our characters.

Emasculation not Required

So what does this mean for the future of anime? Should emasculation not be implemented? Are we to shift the “balance of power” towards the females and make males a minority when it comes to having strong leads? That’s not the case at all. In fact, such thinking is very narrow minded in the grand scheme of things. As it is stated multiple times, males and females are very different, but one is not better than the other overall. Each of them has their strengths to present and characters to develop. Rather than to cut out males completely or to reduce their appearances, it would be better if female leads could be developed to the level of male characters and worked side by side with them. It doesn’t have to be a male lead always saving the day; let the girls save them once in awhile. That’s what friends are for, aren’t they? Just imagine how amazing the chemistry of Kirito and Asuna would be if they both fought against Kayaba at the end of the Sword Art Online arc? Rather than Kirito fighting by himself, or even Asuna being the one fighting him, they stood side by side as a couple and defeated the final boss together, giving their lives with a smile on a face for the greater good, knowing that they could go into heaven together. Having a female lead doesn’t mean not having a male lead, we can always have both.

Opening the Door

Should the climate of anime ever change, think about how many new stories we could get in the future! If strong female leads are ever introduced into the mainstream of anime, it would open the door to so many more varieties of narratives. We’ve gotten used to many types of stories that circulate the current industry. How many have groaned in annoyance whenever they hear the words “adapted from the popular light novel”? What about the predictions that many otakus can make whenever they watch a new shounen-like anime, simply because they’ve seen the same type of male character being rehashed over and over? Now imagine if we ever included a strong female lead in the mix! That would mean that there are more parts to the show and the amount of combinations we can experience have increased two fold. Variety is the spice to life, and that is something that the industry sorely needs right now. So many stories simply rethread old tropes that they almost get an automatic miss from the veterans of anime, even if the anime itself is executed well. The injection of more strong female leads like Akane Tsunemori, Mikasa Ackerman, or Riza Hawkeye could revitalise the current climate that perpetuates throughout the industry that we know and love.

Final Thoughts

At the end of the day, this is just one suggestion of many that can be made to improve that narratives of the many anime that come out each and every year. This suggestion isn’t one of exclusion but inclusion. It isn’t about cutting out the male leads and putting the female leads in their place, but to include them into the narrative. Cutting out male leads would defeat the point of the suggestion completely and cripple the narrative as a whole. Of course, there are many issues that can come with introducing female leads, like the pacing of the story being divided between two leads, but without risks we can’t reap the rewards right?
