Here at Honey’s Anime, we have a special place in our otaku hearts for everything inspired by video games. We also empathize when your favorite game gets shut down and nobody knows exactly why. It could be a temporary technical problem… although we also like to think that magical things happen inside the videogames world. This is exactly the premise of Overlord, the brainchild of writer Kugane Maruyama and illustrator so-bin. Our protagonist, Momonga, decides to not log out from his favorite game, called Yggdrasil. Thanks to that, he becomes the most powerful wizard, surrounded by characters that come to life. What other light novels depict fantastic worlds and new territories to conquer like Overlord? Let’s find out in this article!

Similar Manga to Overlord

1. Isekai Maou to Shoukan Shoujo no Dorei Majutsu (How NOT to Summon a Demon Lord)

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="NEOBK-2062696" text="" url="" ]
[en][information_general item1 = "Authors" content1="Yukiya Murasaki, Takahiro Tsurusaki" item2="Genres" content2="Comedy, Fantasy, Magic" item3 = "Volumes" content3="8" item4="Published" content4="Dec 2, 2014 to Present" ][/en]
[es][information_general item1 = "Mangaka" content1="___content1___" item2="Género" content2="___content2___" item3 = "Volúmenes" content3="___content3___" item4="Publicado" content4="___content4___" post_id="" ][/es]

Warning: A bit of ecchi content is ahead. Proceed with caution. Yukiya Murasaki is a veteran writing stories full of fantasy and charismatic female characters. As for Takahiro Tsurusaki, they have some experience illustrating novels from the fantasy gender. On this occasion, they combine their talents to present us the life of Takuma Sakamoto, who is so good with games that he is called the Demon King. When he gets summoned to another world, he recruits some local girls and heads for new adventures. If you liked Overlord because of the protagonist, you are in luck today. Takuma is also a former player who is sent to a fantasy world. Both are skillful with magic, super powerful and are show offs (even if they have their weak side). They also acquire servants throughout their adventures. The difference is that Isekai Maou is darker than Overlord. Also, the story is more centered on the protagonist in this novel… and on his female companions.

2. Princess wa Barairo no Yume wo Miru (The Rose Colored Dream of the Vampire Princess)

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="B079TDP6X2" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]
[en][information_general item1 = "Authors" content1="Ichiro Sasaki, Marimo" item2="Genres" content2="Adventure, Fantasy, Vampire" item3 = "Volumes" content3="4" item4="Published" content4="Aug 8, 2014 to Present" ][/en]
[es][information_general item1 = "Mangaka" content1="___content1___" item2="Género" content2="___content2___" item3 = "Volúmenes" content3="___content3___" item4="Publicado" content4="___content4___" post_id="" ][/es]

Princess wa Barairo no Yume wo Miru was the debut work of Ichiro Sasaki as writer. While they only have another newer project under their sleeve, Marimo has a long experience illustrating seinen novels. In this novel, the protagonist suffers an accident, but far from dying, he is saved by the vampire princess character from a famous game. Now he lives inside an alternative world where everything could happen... besides having a fascinating adventures companion, that is. Another protagonist who is transported to another world? Yeap. Gamers? Sure! Do they command people who are super powerful? You bet! However, the main difference between Princess and Overlord is that the first one has a lighter tone. So, this is the perfect balance for Isekai Maou, if you find that novel too dark for your tastes!

3. Log Horizon

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="NEOBK-1864870" text="" url="" ]
[en][information_general item1 = "Authors" content1="Mamare Touno, Kazuhiro Hara" item2="Genres" content2="Action, Adventure, Fantasy, Magic, Sci-Fi" item3 = "Volumes" content3="10" item4="Published" content4="May 18, 2012 to Jun 28, 2013" ][/en]
[es][information_general item1 = "Mangaka" content1="___content1___" item2="Género" content2="___content2___" item3 = "Volúmenes" content3="___content3___" item4="Publicado" content4="___content4___" post_id="" ][/es]

Mamare Touno has had his fair doses of fame with a couple of well written fantasy light novels. As for Kazuhiro Hara, he debuted as illustrator with a cute looking fantasy novel called Wandervogel before he hit the sweet spot in our otaku hearts together with Touno. In Log Horizon, we get transported together with some 30 thousand players to the world of Ender Tales. Nobody can die, the food has no taste… so all this pushes an adventurer called Shiro to find a way out of this place. We get yet another light novel about real people who get transported to a game-like experience, just like in Overlord. The guilds, magic, and many other elements are present in both. And, oh, the sweet thirst for adventure! The main difference between both novels is the tone of “looking for power” in Overlord while Log Horizon’s protagonists only want to get out of the world they have been transported to. The tone is more positive overall, so if you want a light novel that tempts your sense of wonder, look no further than Log Horizon.

Any Manga Like Overlord ?

4. Jashin Average (Average of Evil Gods)

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="NEOBK-1855809" text="" url="" ]
[en][information_general item1 = "Authors" content1="Yunaki Kitaseno, Kihiro Yuzuki" item2="Genres" content2="Comedy, Fantasy" item3 = "Volumes" content3="3" item4="Published" content4="Sep 7, 2015 to May 25, 2016" ][/en]
[es][information_general item1 = "Mangaka" content1="___content1___" item2="Género" content2="___content2___" item3 = "Volúmenes" content3="___content3___" item4="Publicado" content4="___content4___" post_id="" ][/es]

Jashin Average is the upbeat debut of Yunaki Kitaseno as light novel’s writer, while Kihiro Yuzuki has some experience illustrating fantasy and particularly isekai style light novels. This story tells us the woes of Anri, a girl who looks as beautiful as a flower, behaves as one… but has a little problem. Yes, this lady has scary eyes. When she is summoned to another world and meets an Evil God, she requests to have average eyes… and the God gives her Average Evil God eyes. So, what will come of our heroine? You will have to read Jashin Average to find it out! Anri is summoned to an RPG-like world just like the protagonist of Overlord. They are very powerful and skillful in their own rights as well. However, their appearance might make us think that they are evil. The main difference is that Anri does not want the power of the Evil God eyes, while Momonga is very happy with his new life and skills. Therefore, if you would prefer a lighter version of Overlord, you can not miss Jashin Average!

5. Re: Monster

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="NEOBK-1386515" text="" url="" ]
[en][information_general item1 = "Authors" content1="Kogitsune Kagekiro, Kobayakawa Haruyoshi" item2="Genres" content2="Action, Adventure, Fantasy, Magic" item3 = "Volumes" content3="9" item4="Published" content4="Jul 24, 2012 to Present" ][/en]
[es][information_general item1 = "Mangaka" content1="___content1___" item2="Género" content2="___content2___" item3 = "Volúmenes" content3="___content3___" item4="Publicado" content4="___content4___" post_id="" ][/es]

We have one more debut light novel here in the case of writer Kogitsune Kagekiro and illustrator Kobayakawa Haruyoshi. Our protagonist in this occasion is Tomokui Kanata, who after suffering death, reincarnates in a weak goblin named Goburou. Thanks to this reincarnation, Goburou has memories of his past life and becomes pretty strong if he eats a lot. Now he will have to put this abilities on test in this fantasy world. So… where have we heard of a protagonist who is transported to another world? Ok, ok, we get it, this is becoming a common prop ^^U The protagonist also becomes more powerful, and then they have to use their abilities to survive and conquer the new world. Even the atmosphere is quite similar on these two stories, so if you miss Overlord, this is the light novel you should be reading.

6. Tensei shitara Slime Datta Ken (That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime)

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="NEOBK-1984053" text="" url="" ]
[en][information_general item1 = "Authors" content1="Fuse, Taiki Kawakami" item2="Genres" content2="Fantasy, Shounen" item3 = "Volumes" content3="226" item4="Published" content4="Mar 26, 2015 to Present" ][/en]
[es][information_general item1 = "Mangaka" content1="___content1___" item2="Género" content2="___content2___" item3 = "Volúmenes" content3="___content3___" item4="Publicado" content4="___content4___" post_id="" ][/es]

Tensei shitara Slime Datta Ken was the debut work for Fuse as writer. As for Taiki Kawakami, he illustrated two fantasy manga before working with Fuse. In Tensei shitara Slime Datta Ken, a 37 year old man is killed by a robber, but fortunately for him, he reincarnates as a blind slime in another world. Instead of grieving, he renames himself as Rimuru Tempest and decides to have many adventures in this world, conquering companions along the way. Both protagonists change radically when they are transported to another world, not only physically, but also in matters of power. They do not have strong emotions or needs, and romance is not an important factor in their stories… and they are also the bosses. The main difference is that Overlord has a darker tone and is more focused in mind games. Therefore, if what you want in your isekai is adventure and some good battles, Tensei Shitara Slime Datta Ken has you covered.

Final Thoughts

To be an Overlord or to not be one… if only we could choose… Anyway, this does not mean that we do not enjoy adventures with powerful protagonists in other worlds. Did you notice that this is a prop that has gotten famous particularly within this decade? Light novels like Overlord help us imagine what would happen if we were suddenly skillful and free from other responsibilities. What other light novels like Overlord have you enjoyed? Don’t forget that we are open to all your comments and suggestions. See you soon!

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="sentai" url="" ]

Established in the summer of 1973, Doga Kobo was born from former Toei Animation staff banding together. The studio has produced a number of quality anime, mainly focusing on comedy and slice of life series in recent years. Many of their works stem from manga, though Doga Kobo does have a few original works of their own. With a distinct style of animation and depth of comedy, Doga Kobo is one studio that takes pride in their work! We’ve already mentioned some of our favorite Doga Kobo anime in the past, but since then, the studio has produced a few more gems! We tried to limit the older Doga Kobo anime on our list, showcasing some of the best new series they’ve produced. Doga Kobo has perfected their use of comedy over the years. And it certainly shows in the choices we’ve picked for our list.

10. Touken Ranbu: Hanamaru

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="B01LTHMC76" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" Oct. 2016 – Dec. 2016 "]

Touken Ranbu: Hanamaru follows the life of Yamatonokami Yasusada, an uchigatana who has been called to fight alongside Souji Okita. The sword warrior is starting his first day at Saniwa’s citadel. Reunited with his friend Kashuu Kiyomitsu, the two soon get caught up in the events surrounding the sword warriors living in the citadel. Though the warriors are always ready to fight to protect history, that doesn’t mean they don’t know how to have fun! In a series of individualized episodes, the characters in Touken Ranbu get introduced and show off their day-to-day activities. Though this anime is based on a video game, it still has its own merit as a show, giving each of the characters a small highlight. Touken Ranbu: Hanamaru brings enjoyment through its simple comedy, allowing the serious nature of the franchise to show a more lighthearted take. The story is almost not important, with an episodic nature and slice of life feel. You can watch your favorite characters from Touken Ranbu interact with each other in their down time. And if you’ve never played Touken Ranbu before, this anime is still an enjoyable experience!

9. Hoshizora e Kakaru Hashi(A Bridge to the Starry Skies)

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="PCBX-51395" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" Apr. 2011 – June 2011 "]

Kazuma Hoshino and his younger brother Ayumu are making a drastic move to the country. The two are staying at the Yorozuyo Inn while they wait for their parents to join them – though their first few hours in the countryside don’t end up going as planned! After taking the wrong bus and losing Ayumu’s hat, Kazuma encounters Ui, a girl who attempts to lead him back to the bus. Unfortunately, Kazuma finds himself in a rather awkward situation with both Ui and her friend Ibuki. His situation only gets worse when he realizes that the two girls are both classmates at his new school… Horishizora e Kamari Hashi is similar to many other harem/ecchi anime. Yet, it includes the unique brand of comedy that Doga Kobo is known for, making it that much more enjoyable. By the time you finish the final episode, this anime will surprise you with how different it is from the usual series in its genre. And the art style is well done, giving you the chance to enjoy Hoshizora e Kakaru Hashi for what it is.

8. Uchuu Kazoku Carlvinson (Space Family Carlvinson)

[Information episodes=" 1 " aired=" Dec. 1988 "]

A group of travelling performers is hurtling through space. Suddenly, they collide with another spacecraft and find the only survivor from the other ship is a small human girl. The performers decide to raise the girl as their own on a nearby planet, “acting” as a family for her sake. They wait for someone from the girl’s race to come and get her – though some from the group actually enjoy taking care of young Corona. This is the short tale of their unique family! Space Family Carlvinson is only a 45 minute OVA. It was the first production that Doga Kobo made on its own, and still has enjoyment for viewers to this day! You can see the beginnings of the studio, as they figure out how to balance the show’s premise with comedy. The different family members of the Carlvinsons are quite entertaining in their own right as well. Though the animation is a bit dated now, we still highly recommend watching Space Family Carlvinson. The story is rushed, but that is simply the nature of an OVA. The comedy and heart behind the tale still hold up!

7. Makai Ouji: Devils and Realist (Devils and Realist)

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="sentai" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" Jul. 2013 – Sep. 2013 "]

William is the genius child of a rich aristocratic family. But one day, his uncle loses everything when his business fails, forcing William to search through his family belongings for anything that can be sold. He happens upon an ancient underground room, hidden by one of his ancestors. William somehow manages to activate a magical seal in this room, which accidentally summons a demon! The devil introduces himself as Dantalion, and tells William that he has the power to choose the next ruler of the demon world. Makai Ouji is a stretch into the supernatural and mystery genres for Doga Kobo. At the same time, it still comes back to the classic comedy that this studio is known for. The cast of demons and William come to life thanks to Doga Kobo’s style – mainly, the laidback, funny approach that lets viewers get to know the characters more personally. The anime’s rather unique plot also makes it stand out from the rest. Although it might feel slow-paced to some that regularly watch mystery or supernatural anime, its plot still gets to the point in a way that lets you see the characters more clearly. This often overlooked addition to Doga Kobo’s works is well worth taking a look at!

6. Luck & Logic

[sourceLink asin="B01NCOXDFI" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" Jan. 2016 – Mar. 2016 "]

In the midst of a war, members of humanity fight wielding “Logic,” a kind of power that allows them to enter a trance with beings from another world. Yoshichika Tsurugi is a normal civilian living in peace, lacking the Logic to do any sort of fighting. But when he encounters Athena, his destiny will be set in motion! Luck & Logic gives viewers an anime focusing on the action and mystical setting. If you’re a fan of Doba Kobo’s other works, this anime is completely different from any of their other series. The only identifying thing about Luck & Logic is its art style, which is the same beautifully detailed animation that Doba Kobo puts into many of their anime. Luck & Logic is an opportunity for Doba Kobo to show that they can focus on other genres of anime. It’s pretty good overall – but we still prefer the studio’s comedic anime!

5. Tada-kun wa Koi wa Shinai (Tada Never Falls in Love)

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="B07BY674R6" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" Apr. 2018 – ongoing "]

Mitsuyoshi Tada is a boy who has never known love before, though his attentive kindness seems like the kind of thing that girls would adore! One day, Mitsuyoshi is taking pictures of cherry blossoms, when he runs into Teresa Wagner, a transfer student. Teresa is lost, so Mitsuyoshi takes her to his grandfather’s coffee shop. Where will their story go from there? Tada Never Falls in Love is the most recent Doga Kobo anime on our list, as it is currently airing this spring season. The focus of this anime is once again comedy, although romance plays a big part in the series composition as well. Mitsuyoshi Tada is a compelling main character, especially for those of us who struggle with romance! And with plenty of interesting supporting characters to lean on, Tada Never Falls in Love is looking like it might be one of the best anime this season. Lessons in love and life await you here.

4. Gabriel DropOut

Together this group will learn what the meaning of life is –maybe… Gabriel DropOut is one of the funniest anime on Doga Kobo’s extensive list, showcasing the studio’s extensive work in comedy. A truly hilarious series, Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun is one of Doga Kobo’s finest works, one of few that remains in the memories of viewers long after it is watched. 2. New Game!

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="B01HWSIUQ8" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" Jul. 2016 – Sep. 2016 "]

Aoba Suzukaze decides to go straight into the workforce after she graduates from high school, applying to work at game company Eagle Jump right away. She has always loved the Fairies Story game series that Eagle Jump produces, and to her joy, she learns that she will be working on Fairies Story 3! She will also be working under lead character designer Kou Yagami, who happens to be her idol! Aoba has to navigate the brand new territory of designing her dream game alongside her new coworkers. Will they achieve their goals? or will this game be a flop? Plenty of anime exist that give a closer look at the video game industry, but New Game! is different than those series. Particularly when combined with the second season, we can see real character growth in Aoba and her friends. Their struggles to be better and improve themselves are realistic as well. Being a part of video game development is not all fun and games. Yet, New Game! manages to give that sense of realism even while it is lighthearted and full of relaxed comedy, combining Doga Kobo’s talents.

1. Himouto! Umaru-chan

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="TDV-27337D" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" Jul. 2015 – Sep. 2015 "]

At our top spot on this list is none other than Himouto! Umaru-chan. In this anime, Umaru Doma is known as the perfect high school girl, though that all changes when she gets home. Putting on a hamster hoodie, she loses her responsible attitude in favor of a lazy otaku lifestyle. Umaru leaves all of the housework to her older brother Taihei, while she relaxes and thinks about her own problems. With her friends and her brother to pick up her slack, Umaru’s daily antics are entertaining in their own right! Himouto! Umaru-chan is easily the height of Doga Kobo’s comedic anime, particularly with the release of a second season not too long ago. Though this type of anime has been done many times, Himouto! Umaru-chan just has something special that makes everyone laugh. We love the dynamic between Umaru and her friends, as well as the relationship that she has with her brother. With the adventures that Umaru gets up to, it’s no wonder that she is able to have a seemingly normal life at school! We picked Himouto! Engaged to the Unidentified (Mikakunin de Shinkoukei) wallpaper

Set up in 1973 by former Toei Animation staff, Doga Kobo have made their presence known over the years as their output has increased substantially. With the success that YuruYuri brought to the company, Doga Kobo has capitalised on this with a dedicated team of experienced character animators both in-house and freelance. This has resulted in Doga Kobo becoming one of the best animation studios when it comes to character animation alongside Kyoto Animation. Thanks to their recent works, Doga Kobo have become my favourite animation studio and just their logo is enough to encourage me to dive into something new. They’re the undisputed kings of comedy series and Doga Kobo producers know exactly who to get for each and every new venture they take within the genre. So here are 10 anime series that have made me regard Doga Kobo so highly.

10. Laughing Under the Clouds (Donten ni Warau)

Donten ni Warau dvd
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" October 2014 - December 2014 "]

Continuing the tale of Doga Kobo’s diversity as a studio that is so commonly typecast for its comedy works, here’s a historical, supernatural series set in Japan 1878. Donten ni Warau, or its English title, Laughing Under the Clouds follows a group of three brothers who are tasked with delivering criminals to the prison of Lake Biwa. But after being suspected of being the demon Orochi’s vessel, things turn for the worst. It’s always great to see Doga Kobo doing something new and whilst it doesn’t hold up to their other works, it was something valuable in its own right. It offered something new for fans of shoujo series with appealing characters and the dynamics between them and if that sounds good enough for you, you should definitely check out Laughing Under the Clouds.

9. Majestic Prince (Ginga Kikoutai Majestic Prince)

Majestic Prince dvd
[Information episodes=" 24 " aired=" April 2013 - September 2013 "]

Majestic Prince is one of those mecha series that you don’t watch for the mechs themselves. Whilst the driving plot does indeed involve mecha battles, it’s these moments aboard the spaceship before deployment that are really interesting. Following Team Rabbits, these mecha pilots must learn to get along and work together as they fight the invading alien forces. It’s a mecha series for those that aren’t particularly interested in mecha and it works as a great gateway into the genre. Even the mecha battles themselves aren’t so much about the mech’s capabilities and instead are about the character dynamics at play as conflict breaks out during the heat of battle. This is the primary difference between Majestic Prince and other popular mecha series such as Mobile Suit Gundam. It’s not so much about the politics that drive these battles rather than the people who do the battling themselves and it makes for a great watch.

8. Himouto! Umaru-chan (My Two-Faced Little Sister)

Himouto! Umaru-chan dvd
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" July 2015 - September 2015 "]

If you’ve been watching anime for a while, you’re probably familiar with the “little sister character” trope. The younger sister who cooks, cleans and rarely complains is a popular idea amongst some anime fans. Yet, the reality is very much the opposite and Himouto! Umaru-chan is prepared to completely crush this idealised fiction. Whilst at school, Umaru is the perfect student, she’s a complete slob at home and it’s this disparity that leads to the jokes and references throughout. Whether it’s a reference to Monster Hunter, Metal Gear Solid or Mario Kart, Umaru-chan is filled with video game and anime references throughout. It’s Doga Kobo’s most recent work and the animation quality is consistent throughout with great character animation and expressive moments. With the hamster imagery tied into absolutely everything, the entire aesthetic is comical in nature and it doesn’t take itself seriously for more than a minute. It’s pure fun bundled into this short sibling comedy series.

7. Mikagura School Suite (Mikagura Gakuen Kumikyoku)

mikagura gakuen kumikyoku
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" April 2015 - June 2015 "]

Time for something more recent! Mikagura School Suite, originally based on a vocaloid series is a show guaranteed to put a smile on your face. In a school where you possess powers based on your club, the students of Mikagura Academy must compete in these battle tournaments for the glory of their clubs. Following the excitable Eruna Ichinomiya, she participates in these battles as a member of her own club in her attempts to help the student council president One of the key talents of Doga Kobo animators are their incredible character and follow-through animation. But not only does Mikagura School Suite achieve this, but it also includes great action and effects animation turning these battles into something amazing each and every episode. If you can get along with Eruna and don’t find her at all annoying, then you’re going to love this comedy show.

6. GJ Club (GJ-bu)

gj bu dvd
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" January 2013 - March 2013 "]

With lovable characters and hilarious antics all based around club activities (Or lackthereof), GJ Club (Good-Job Club) is a charming comedy series that you can’t help but laugh your way through. Whether it’s playing board games, reading manga or just lazing around, the GJ Club is the ultimate setting for limitless adventures, even if the majority of them happen within the clubroom itself. All of the jokes throughout bring you closer to each of the club members as it subtly provides more This is part of the list where we’re diving right into Doga Kobo’s specialties. These are comedy, slice of life series that are often regarded as being bottom-of-the-barrel series by some anime fans. But Doga Kobo takes this stuff seriously and the character animation involved is not to be scoffed at. And if you’ve already seen GJ Club, all I can say is “Good Job!”

5. Monthly Girls’ Nozaki-kun (Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun)

Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" July 2014 - September 2014 "]

Being one of the most popular comedy series of 2014, Monthly Girls’ Nozaki-kun tells the tale of an oblivious mangaka and those that are driven to help him out. Whilst it is advertised as a romcom, the romance aspects serve as an inspiration for new jokes throughout the series as Chiyo tries to confess to Nozaki, always ending in failure. However, Nozaki-kun’s charm comes primarily from the side cast who all have their own quirks and jokes that arise within each of the smaller skits that the show presents. This was a breakout hit within the season of Summer 2014 amongst Western fans. Since then, I can refer to Doga Kobo as “Those guys that made Nozaki-kun” to immediately give a good impression of what to expect from their newer works. It’s the charming series that will always leave comedy fans crossing their fingers for a second season.

4. Yuru Yuri (YuruYuri: Happy Go Lily)

Yuru Yuri dvd
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" July 2011 - September 2011 "]

Yuru Yuri is absolutely fantastic. Currently on its third season, this comedy series provides a mix between the lighter moments we might see in stuff like Nozaki-kun and GJ-Bu, only to combine it with moments that have no interest in logic at all. Whilst most comedy series make attempts to diversify over time, introducing new characters and jokes between them, Yuru Yuri somehow manages to use the same character dynamics to provide something new and fun every single episode. With Akari, Toshino Kyoko(!), Yui and Chinatsu, there is not a single dull day at the Amusement Club. There’s a reason Yuru Yuri is on its third season, a feat that many other series fail to achieve and it’s because of its growing popularity over the years. Yuru Yuri is impossible to dislike and Doga Kobo is very much responsible for this with an in-house director following the project and turning it into one of the studio’s best works.

3. Love Lab

Love Lab dvd
[Information episodes=" 13 " aired=" July 2013 - September 2013 "]

Sometimes love takes a little practice. Love Lab follows a group of girls as they practise romantic activities such as going on dates and even holding hands! It’s these moments and the subversion of character expectations that make Love Lab a real joy to watch. It never feels awkward or overly dramatised as it goes through all these scenarios comically. There is not a single dislikeable character within Love Lab and it stands tall amongst the sea of other comedy series that strive to achieve what this series has mastered. I made a claim at the very start of this article that I’ve been yet to prove. Character animation is something that is often overlooked within the grand scale of things. Whilst people are always eager to talk up the coolest new fight scene in their favourite action scene, there’s rarely anyone talking about an exemplary moment where a character did a particularly well animated smile. But Love Lab is the series that really proves the value of character animation with some incredible moments of smooth motion and detailed expression. Seriously, watch Love Lab. I guarantee that you’ll *love* it!

2. Engaged to the Unidentified (Mikakunin de Shinkoukei)

mikakunin de shinkoukei dvd
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" January 2014 - March 2014 "]

“Cliched”. It’s not an uncommon term when you’re swimming through the comedy genre. Whilst there are indeed a whole load of exceptions to this rule, it’s hard to deny that we do get repeated jokes across multiple shows. However, Engaged to the Unidentified does both at the same time. It is both cliched and an exception to the rule as it takes all of these common tropes and ideas, only to completely subvert your expectations and present something that nobody could have expected. Following a girl, shocked to find that she is engaged to a fairly irregular boy, we watch on as a series of ridiculous events pop up and they deal with them in a way that leaves us in a fit of laughter. Engaged to the Unidentified is exceptional in so many ways and it truly stands tall as a hilarious comedy show that any fan of the genre should watch. Featuring great animation, rivalling Love Lab, it’s given birth to a selection of great scenes and gifs that have been scattered around the internet. You’ve probably already seen parts of it! Now take the next step and actually watch it.

1. Plastic Memories

plastic memories happy new year
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" April 2015 - June 2015 "]

Sometimes comedy doesn’t have to be used for the sake of laughter. In this tragedy series about terminal illness, Tsukasa meets Isla, an android who is approaching her expiry date. Throughout this romance, tragedy series, comedy director, Yoshiyuki Fujiwara employs comedic situations throughout to make light of the oncoming disaster. It makes for a unique sort of presentation in its attempts to deliver an emotional story without the use of any overly melodramatic moments. Whilst the series does present itself as some sort of AI story within the vein of the science fiction genre, it quickly connects with the viewer as something far more emotionally driven. Plastic Memories is incredible and it’s the sort of series that can make you laugh and cry all at the same time. Through brilliant art direction and incredible character animation, the world of Plastic Memories is brought to life and the plights of our characters are more evident than ever. It’s the best series made by Doga Kobo and if you can handle the emotional weight, it’s an experience that you won’t want to miss.

gekkan shoujo nozaki-kun wallpaper

Doga Kobo’s portfolio is rapidly growing each and every year. With the currently airing Hidan no Aria AA and the upcoming original magical girl series, Breetschlag, they are definitely at the top of their game. Even when they’re not producing their own original series, Doga Kobo always seems to make every project they work on their own. They rise high as my favourite animation studio and I become more confident of that every single season.

Standing alone in the Teramachi Sanjou shopping district in Kyoto, there is an antique store called ‘Kura.’ By coincidence, high school female student Aoi Mashiro gets to know the son of the owner of Kura, Kiyotaka, and ends up working there part-time. Kiyotaka has a soft demeanor with a frightfully sharp intuition. In fact, people refer to him as ‘Holmes’. Together, they undertake various requests concerning antiques that customers bring to them.

For the past few years, there has been an increase in the release of BL manga and series focusing on what is now familiarly called the Omegaverse. The popularity of the Omegaverse is as such that currently, if you go to Animate in Japan to see the newest release of BL manga and doujinshi, there will be a nice number of line up of manga that will bring you stories of relationships between male alpha, beta, and/or omega. The end of 2017 and the beginning of 2018 boasted an interesting BL manga sales ranking where at least three different titles of Omegaverse BL manga snagged a place in the top ten, including the popular Kashikomarimashita, Destiny series. Some of use are probably already familiar with the Omegaverse from reading slash fanfictions, and consequently might have been surprised to see the rapid rise of the Omegaverse’s popularity in BL manga these past few years. How did the Omegaverse trope reach the BL manga industry in Japan, and how did it become so popular? Let’s take a brief look at it together!

[ad_top2 class="mt40"]

What is the Omegaverse?

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="KMUSIC-84" text="" url="" ]

Simply put, the Omegaverse is a trope where the characters written in this universe are given specific biological roles based on the hierarchical system originating from animal behavior research. If you feel like you’ve heard the term alpha, beta, and omega before without knowing what the Omegaverse is, it’s likely because you might have read or heard about them in context of animal behaviors. This is also why the Omegaverse trope often involves other animal behavioral elements, despite the characters portrayed in the universe are fully humans. The core premise of the Omegaverse is really quite simple; it is a universe where the characters could be assigned as Alpha, Beta, or Omega. Alphas take the dominant roles, the highest in the hierarchical system, might be able to knot when having sex, and are able to impregnate Omegas. Omegas, on the other hand, are the lowest in the hierarchical system, take the submissive roles, and have the ability to self-lubricate and become pregnant regardless of their sex. Lastly, Betas are the ones who are placed under Alphas and above Omegas in the hierarchical system, and most often portrayed as “normal” humans with no special attributes like Alphas or Omegas. In the Omegaverse, lovers might form a bond when they meet their fated mates, which gives them a heightened connection with their bond partner. The concept of “going into heat” is also largely used in this universe, which is a time where the Alphas or Omegas really, really need to have sex. This simple core premise usually stay the same no matter what Omegaverse stories you read, but the general world-building for the universe itself is very flexible. The Omegaverse largely started as a kink trope—a trope intended to portray non-normative sexual practices or desires. As such, it’s really no wonder that most stories involving the Omegaverse has an intense focus dedicated to portrayal of sexual acts and their impacts on the characters. However, while this trope essentially began pretty much as a porn fodder, through its development in the hands of creative fandom, the Omegaverse also serves as an interesting canvas to explore a wide range of stories and world-building—from human rights issues to social power dynamics, or simply telling stories of a Beta paired with an Alpha or an Omega instead of the usual Alpha-Omega pair? If you dive into the the Omegaverse trope nowadays, you can pretty much find any kind of stories you want.

How it started

The Omegaverse trope is said to have originated in the Supernatural fandom, specifically in one of its many kink memes. At that time, the Supernatural fandom was rife with werewolf and knotting kinks, so the Omegaverse trope might have been a natural extension of that. The popularity of this trope spread it out the Supernatural fandom, which is not surprising considering fandom has already had experience with older tropes that are pretty similar or have similar elements to the Omegaverse, such as the Mpreg (male pregnancy) trope, BDSM Alternate Universes, Soulmates, and others. Now, if you’ve been reading slash fanfictions for years, these tropes would be extremely familiar to you. The Mpreg trope is one of the most common and popularly used—whatever fandom you’re in, there would be at least one slash fanfiction utilizing the Mpreg trope. It’s a trope that fan creators had always been very creative with; after all, how do you make a male pregnant? Magic, body-altering science, or turning the character into non-human? It could get sort of tiring having to think up reasons for Mpreg, doesn’t it? The Omegaverse, on the other hand, gives not only a convenient set-up for Mpreg settings, but also offers a much more interesting sandbox for the fan creators to play with relationship dynamics! With this fresh, exciting sandbox, it’s no wonder that a lot of fan creators want to try their hands on the Omegaverse. By the year 2013, the Omegaverse has already become one of the common slash genre tropes in fanfictions, especially in non-anime and manga fandoms. Fandoms for American TV shows and movies, novels, and even RPF are rife with the Omegaverse stories, with, of course, varying responses from readers. The Omegaverse then slowly makes their way to the Japanese anime and manga fandom. What is it actually that made the Omegaverse enticing for its readers? There have been people commenting that the Omegaverse is simply an excuse to have two characters indulge in what basically is marathon sex. Some people like the concept of pair-bond, as it is quite similar to the much older Soulmate trope, especially tied with the tropes such as “going in heat” and “knotting”, and later, male pregnancy. Some others like the endless possibility of world-building, considering how the Omegaverse doesn’t have a specific rule outside of its core premise. Whatever the reason is, it is clear that the Omegaverse’s popularity has a lot to do with the fact that it combines so many older, popular tropes into one—similar concepts, yet still different enough to make it look fresh!

Omegaverse in BL manga

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="NEOBK-1920076" text="" url="" ]

Omegaverse in Japan, much like it is internationally, first emerged in the creative fandom space. Most likely, Japanese fans who ventured to the international fandom brought the Omegaverse back to their own fandom space by producing Omegaverse stories. After an interesting adventure in the pixiv webpage in order to trace the earliest origin of the Omegaverse in Japanese fandom, we found that the earliest Omegaverse doujinshi sample had been uploaded in pixiv on June 2013 for the X-Men: First Class fandom. However, it was only around 2014 that the Omegaverse began to pick up its popularity in pixiv—after a certain pixiv artist had drawn an interestingly detailed explanation on the core concepts of the Omegaverse, a lot of fans began to show interest for it, enough that many of the well-known doujinshi artists began selling the Omegaverse doujinshi of their ships at doujinshi events. By November 2014, Kadokawa released Do-S Kaichou ni Gokaicho!? Alpha wa Omega wo Shihai Suru, followed by Fusion Project starting the monthly magazine Omegaverse Project starting March 2015, which published seven different mangaka’s Omegaverse manga in the span of about half a year. This helped spreading the Omegaverse trope to Japanese BL manga readers, familiarizing the terms and the workings of the trope. This turned out to be immensely popular that other publishers began to publish their own the Omegaverse anthologies. It should be noted though, that while Japanese fans brought back the Omegaverse from the international fandom, they were never a stranger to the core concepts of the Omegaverse. Long time BL manga readers would be very familiar with the title Sex Pistols, a hit BL manga by Kotobuki Tarako, which told the story of a society where special individuals did not evolve from apes, but from other animals. Sex Pistols includes portrayals of various animal characteristics in its human characters, male pregnancy, as well as hierarchical system based on an individual’s breed rarity and desirability. Does it feel like ringing a bell to you? Yup, it has elements that are very similar to the Omegaverse Interestingly, while the international fandom is pretty flexible about the concept and rules of the Omegaverse, the Japanese version of this trope is a little bit more restrictive. Unlike the international fandom who likes to bend the core concepts of the Omegaverse, the Japanese fans tend to stick to the Omegaverse guide, with explanations you could now find on the first pages of every volume of Omegaverse BL manga you read, impressively detailing the reproductive system, power dynamics, “going into heat”, and how pair-bond happens. Because of this, Omegaverse BL manga have considerably less variety in world-building compared to Omegaverse fanfictions and comics written in international fandoms.

Omegaverse, thriving?

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="NEOBK-2036084" text="" url="" ]

Is the Omegaverse really that popular in Japan? Is it really thriving in the Japanese BL manga industry? Well, the enthusiasm for the Omegaverse series is certainly rising very notably for the past few years. In the 2017 annual Kono BL ga Yabai! ranking, one of the immensely popular Omegaverse series by Sachimo, Kashikomarimashita, Destiny ~Answer~, which is a sequel of the similarly titled manga, manages to snag the third place, just after the notable, long-running since 2011 Saezuru Tori wa Habatakanai by Yoneda Kou. Omegaverse BL manga also snagged a considerable number of the annual BL Award held by chil-chil, the must-follow webpage for fujoshi in Japan. Among the titles is the heartwarming Tadaima, Okaeri series by Ichikawa Ichi, Abarenbo Honey by Kevin Tobidase, Sayonara Alpha by Ichinashi Kimi, and Kurui Naku no wa Boku no Ban by Kusabi Keri. Just last week, Kusabi Keri had also finished an impressive, largely successful exhibition for the very same series at Torico, notably getting excited responses for the varied props in the exhibition, including displays of Alpha and Omega pheromone scents. Why has the Omegaverse become such a huge hit in the BL manga industry in Japan? One reason might be because it’s fresh, but at the same time it is also familiar. Readers of BL manga would be familiar with popular series dealing with Mpreg (such as Sex Pistols), or stories depicting a human-animals hybrid (Sakyou Aya’s Kuroneko Kareshi series are immensely popular). So the technicality of the Omegaverse’s world isn’t hard to grasp, even for new readers. Add to that, tropes such as Soulmates or fated lovers has also always been popular in BL manga (Shimizu Yuki’s -ZE-, for example). The good thing about the Omegaverse is that it caters to so many different tastes. You like fluffy, domestic shounen-ai manga that gives you family feels? There’s Tadaima, Okaeri series to enjoy. You want to read one that is sexy, pretty-much-just-porn, full of sexual scenes? There are tons of Omegaverse BL manga catering to that needs. You’re in the mood of reading complicated triangle relationship with dark relationship dynamics? Or perhaps some more of the “forbidden love” tropes? There’s Ai to Makoto or Elite Omega wa Yoru ni Oborete! Even though the Omegaverse is a specific trope, it still gives its readers such a wide variety of genre, which keeps readers for getting bored over the same tropes. From light-hearted BL to the darkest kind of angst, there’s always something for everyone within the Omegaverse, even if the established rules already has a specific setting. Of course, nothing signals popularity much better than sequels published for a previously finished series. This year, one of the most popular of the early Omegaverse BL manga who had managed to rank first on amazon Japan, Sayonara Koibito, Mata Kite Tomodachi by yoha, gets a sequel under the title Sayonara Koibito, Mata Kite Tomodachi Lost Child. This only contributes to the long list of Omegaverse titles getting sequels after their previous successes, including the Kashikomarimashita, Destiny series and the Tadaima, Okaeri series. By the looks of it, the BL manga industry isn’t about to let go of the Omegaverse craze just yet!

Final Thoughts

Omegaverse, compared to some of other tropes in BL manga, is certainly considerably new, but perhaps it is what makes it so popular nowadays. The similarity with older tropes lent a reassuring feeling in diving into an unknown trope, but there’s just enough difference and twists to make it feel fresh and new for the readers. Those who are more familiar with the Omegaverse from the creative fandom space might feel the BL manga version of the Omegaverse to be more restrictive, but in the end, the core concepts stayed the same, which makes it easier to enjoy even for those who have been reading the Omegaverse before it got popular. What do you think about the Omegaverse? If you are familiar with it, was your first Omegaverse experience in the fandom space, or was it from the BL manga, which cemented its Japanese version to the trope? Let us know in the comments!

Similar Anime to Rokuhoudou Yotsuiro Biyori

1. Seiyou Kottou Yougashiten: Antique (Antique Bakery)

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="ACBA-10597" text="" url="" ]
[en][information_general item1 = "Episodes" content1="12" item2="Aired" content2="Jul 4, 2008 to Sep 19, 2008" ][/en]

This probably was the first anime that presented us the concept of a store with delicious food and handsome men. When Tachibana decides to open an authentic Western style bakery, he ends up hiring Ono, a genius pastry chef who once confessed to him in high school. Together with retired boxer Kanda and Tachibana’s bodyguard Kobayakawa, they will personally serve the bakery customers. However, the personal tragedies behind the smiling four men will spice up their work. We have four men running a shop in both anime, and these four men have different personalities and background stories. The main character is the boss, and the slice of life style is prevalent throughout the episodes. Slow and soothing, the main difference between the two anime is that Antique Bakery is more focused on cakes and the tea hours, while Rokuhoudou Yotsuiro Biyori has a more varied assortment of food and… well, they serve Japanese cuisine, of course! So, if your piece of cake are… cakes, just step into Antique Bakery!

2. Isekai Shokudou (Restaurant to Another World)

Welcome to Tokyo! One of the most popular restaurants in town is Nekoya, which serves Eastern and Western cuisine of the best quality. Every Saturday, the restaurant is apparently closed… But wait, look closely at the people inside. Dragons, fairies, and all sorts of unique folks visit Nekoya for a taste of good food. They share a piece of their hearts and minds while they eat, and that is how we discover that humans are not so different from them. If you like the concept of people going inside a safe space where they can relax, talk about their problems and have delicious food, then you will find Rokuhoudou and Isekai Shokudou similar. The prepared food is specially thought for each costumer’s needs in both stories. The main difference is that the episodes in Isekai Shokudou are divided in two, with a human shown in one of the halves and a fantastic creature in the other half. Also, the selection of food is more limited in Rokuhoudou. Therefore, if you like fantasy anime combined with the concept of a coffee shop, you may want to give a try to Isekai Shokudo.

3. Ristorante Paradiso

How would you feel if your mother had left you when you were small to remarry after divorcing your father? Nicoletta decides to take revenge on her mother by traveling to Rome and presenting herself in Casetta dell’Orso, the restaurant her mother and her new husband own. However, what she finds inside turns her world upside down. Now Nicoletta is a cooking apprentice in the restaurant, where she will interact with the interesting male staff. Ristorante Paradiso and Rokuhoudou Yotsuiro Biyori are very similar because they depict four men who run shops. They are capable of creating an atmosphere of safety and tranquility for their clients, while their cooking skills are amazing. The main difference is that the cast in Ristorante Paradiso is older and their stories tend to be more dramatic as well. Therefore, if you want something more grown up but with the same flavour as Rokuhoudou, maybe you might like to try the food at Ristorante Paradiso.

If you are lucky enough to find it, you will be greeted by the bartender Ryuu Sasakura, a legendary talent in terms of cocktail making. Whoever encounters him will find exactly what they needed in the form of an unforgettable drink. In terms of relaxing atmosphere, there is no anime that can beat Bartender. Yes, the type of customers that we encounter in Rokuhoudou and Bartender are similar. The experience of a good drink or beverage are key in both anime as well, lead by handsome men with great skill. We could not help but mention this cute anime that has had a sequel. The protagonist is Hoto Kokoa, an upbeat girl who moves in with the Kafuu family in order to be able to go to her desired high school. She also enters the wonderfully cozy Rabbit House, a cafe where she will make friends and work as waitress. Together with fellow friends and rivals, Hoto Kokoa will deal with her daily life. So yes, coffee shops rule in Rokuhoudou and Gochuumon. You will be able to find delicious, sweet treats in both anime, where you will feel like you are the customer yourself. A team of friends run the coffee shops in both stories, and they have distinctive appearances and personalities. The main difference is that Gochuumon is more focused onn the silly and light headed style. If you find Rokuhoudou delicious but too formal, you may want to head for Rabbit House, where a staff composed by lovely girls will make sure you feel like in home.

The supernatural is all around us… or so anime would have you believe. From ghosts to superpowers to aliens to gods to demons, the supernatural genre of anime is incredibly diverse. In fact, it can be said the supernatural genre is a double-edged sword; It’s so wide that so many different shows fit under the umbrella of the term supernatural. On the other hand though, the genre is so diverse that it will always be coupled with another genre or three to lend better to a story. In fact, supernatural elements actually enhance a story and today, we are going to take a look at supernatural anime for new fans to anime. If you’re a seasoned pro, then you will know what comes in this article, but if you are new, this is just for you.

It’s Like an Umbrella with an Umbrella Under an Umbrella.

We weren’t joking when we said that the supernatural genre was incredibly wide and diverse. There are so many different features and add-ons to other anime that it’s not even funny. Gods, devils, superpowers, supernatural beings like vampires, ghosts, and more abound in the supernatural genre and stretch across a wide variety of others in a tag-team setup. Supernatural married to another genre? Easy. Supernatural action? Check. Supernatural Fantasy. Done. Supernatural comedy? This is like child’s play. There’s even supernatural hentai, so there’s literally something for everything. For this article, it’s best to explore shows more so than talk about them like this, so let’s just dive headfirst into them!

Ao no Exorcist (Blue Exorcist)

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="ANZB-12281" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 25 " aired=" Apr 2011 - Oct 2011 "]

Satan resides in Gehenna while humans reside in Assiah. The two worlds are connected, but the only way to safely travel between the two is via possession. Satan, however, is just too powerful that if he went into someone’s body, they would die. So he needs his children, preferably Rin, so he can possess him and wreak havoc on the human realm. Unfortunately for him, Rin and his twin brother are studying to become exorcists and fight against demons. Rin has grown up unaware of this facet of his identity and when he loses the most important things to him in an instant, he is fueled with righteous rage and decides that he is going to become the greatest exorcist ever and kick Satan’s ass all the way back to hell. Ao no Exorcist follows Rin’s journey of self-realization and learning. Ao no Exorcist is the quintessential supernatural anime that makes it a perfect fit for this article. Anime can sometimes focus on Hell like with Jigoku Shoujo, but this time, you have Satan who wants to reclaim his children and sends demons to get them. They turn into exorcists to fight back and prevent Satan from having his way. Did we mention that Rin also gets blue flames along with a magical sword and sprouts blue flame horns when he fights? Buddhism is a very large theme as well within the series, too, driving home the supernatural theme even further.

Noragami

[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" Jan 2014 - Mar 2014 "]

Yato is a deity that resides in this realm. However, due to him being incredibly poor, he has to take any and all odd jobs in order to get paid. Sadly, he doesn’t even have a shrine to reside over! This leaves him partnerless as his most recent one has abandoned him. Then one day, a girl named Hiyori Iki comes into his life unexpectedly saving him from peril. However, due to this, she now has gained the ability to detach her soul from her body and see things on a spiritual spectrum. She is less than thrilled to learn this and wants to be changed back, but when she learns of Yato’s conundrums, she agrees to help him find a partner so that she can be free of this nightmare. However, it’s going to take a lot of work for this wandering god Yato to be able to help Hiyori. Noragami shocked viewers when it hit airwaves from how enjoyable it was. The series naturally layers the supernatural over the real with gods, supernatural weapons, and more. Not only to start there, but Hiyori can detach her soul from her body and oddly sprouts a cat tail while doing so. The weapons, aka partners, are all sentient too taking on human forms while they are in the human realm unless needed. The other big supernatural aspect comes from the buddhist and shinto related characters. It’s not just Yato, but rather many other characters in the series that are gods from the real versions of the religions and are personified in the series. You will not regret getting into the Noragami series!

Soul Eater

[sourceLink asin="B002Y0KRES" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 51 " aired=" Apr 2008 - Mar 2009 "]

“A sound soul resides in a sound mind and a sound body.” Maka is a student at Death Weapon Meister Academy where shinigami, or death gods, train and learn how to become better ones. The head shinigami is Lord Death and he runs the academy. His mission is to raise beings who look and act like humans but transform into weapons in battle known as “Death Scythes”. However becoming a fully fledged one is not easy and requires time, experience, patience, and 100 souls. The need to consume 99 evil souls and 1 witch’s soul which is a feat in and of itself. Soul Eater is one such weapon and his meister is Maka Albarn. While the two seem like an unlikely duo, they work together quite well. They travel along with Black Star and Death the Kid who are fellow meisters and their weapons defeating evil when it rears its ugly head. Their goal is to collect enough evil souls and the witch’s soul in order to become fully fledged Death Scythes. Soul Eater is a classic anime and if you are not willing to dive into the long story that is Bleach, another famous supernatural anime, then Soul Eater is perfect. Supernatural elements are everywhere from people being able to turn into sentient weapons to fight with their meisters to witches to of course the concept of gods of death and even Lord Death himself. Humanity has always questioned if there is something beyond what we see in our lives and Soul Eater gives us that window to look at death in a slightly less serious way as we explore what could be. The great part about Soul Eater, too, is that it is not too uptight and there are lots of humorous moments sprinkled throughout the series as well.

Soul Eater Trailer:

It’s Not That Serious, Seriously...

Supernatural anime also enjoys a break often from the story due to the seriousness that can usually come across in them. These little laughs help keep you focused as well as able to enjoy what you are watching. There have been some supernatural anime though that like to see how far they can take us while still keeping us involved in the story.

Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo! (Konosuba: God’s Blessing on This Wonderful World)!

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="B01NCMS5TN" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 10 " aired=" Jan 2016 - Mar 2016 "]

Kazuma Satou has just died. He died saving someone who didn’t need saving thus dying of literal embarrassment. When he comes too, a beautiful goddess wearing way too little of clothing tells him that he has a choice. He can either start a new life in a new world with some sort of leg up on everyone else around him, or go to heaven. Kazuma doesn’t want to die yet, so he chooses the reincarnation route. The goddess Aqua offers him his choice of whatever he wants to take into the new fantasy world to help him out and start a good life. He points to her and says “okay then, I want you. You come with me.” Thinking he’s got this in the bag, they are sent to the new world as Aqua is bound by her pact with Kazuma. Sadly for him though, she’s no goddess! She’s extremely useless! Now at level zero with a goddess with the emotional and mental intelligence of an infant, the two now have to eke out an existence in this new, strange world. Warning: Watching Konosuba will probably leave you in tears at some point over how ridiculous and hilarious it is. The whole concept of reincarnation, something isekai needs or it’s not isekai, has its roots in supernatural. Kazuma is summoned to what almost appears to be judgement when an angel gives him an out to being dead. Not to mention too, in this new world there are demons, giant monsters, magic, succubus and more. There’s even an explosion obsessed character who makes great humor while doing so. If you somehow have not seen or heard of Konosuba, now is the best time to see it.

Final Thoughts

This was just something to get your feet wet when it comes to the concept of Supernatural anime. The genre is so incredibly overreaching that facets of it can be seen in many anime. Interview with Chloé Hollings
[gray-hex-decoration]
honey's anime character
Would you mind giving us a brief introduction, name a few of your most notable roles?

honey's anime character
I'm currently doing Widowmaker in Overwatch. Recently I've also been in an indie mobile game which has won various awards and nominations called "Bury Me, My Love". It's an interactive game that I love. Voice acting-wise, I live in Paris, France for those of you who don't know that, so the industry is a little different over there than in L.A., and what I do mostly as a voice actor is commercials and documentaries, a couple cartoons, and a bit of dubbing; living in a country where most movies are in English and they need to be dubbed into French. Yeah! So that's for the voice acting. And I write and do other things.

honey's anime character
First, I just wanted to thank you for coming out. What was it that first made you take an interest in acting?

honey's anime character
Acting... Just acting? So, when I decided to become an actor, I was undecided between studying psychology and studying acting. And basically I wanted to explore these two fields for the same reason: I'm fascinated by human behavior and human beings. And I decided to go into acting because I felt it was the best way for me, given my personality and the way I like to experience thing, the best way for me to explore humanity in the most precise way.

honey's anime character
Now, how did you get into voice acting?

honey's anime character
Well, I didn't get into voice acting from there, I actually started as a child. I was voice acting, so my father's French and my mother's English, and I was born in Paris, and I speak both languages. So as a child I was recording since the age of like 8 or 9, I use to record educational methods for people learning English. So that was just a fun little hobby thing to do as a kid, and a little money, it was fun! I had no intention at the time to turn it into a great career thing. But when I think about it now I realize that doing that was like the best training ever. Cause most of the time these educational things, they don't have huge budgets, so they'll hire like 4 or 5 actors who are meant to play like dozens of characters. So rapidly I was expected to at a very young age change my voice tone, do little girls and little boys, and teenage girls, and sometimes like older women and sometimes fictional characters and animals and stuff and as the years went by I just got better and better at it, which you would if you were doing this all the time, and I decided to become an actor it just felt natural to continue developing in the voice acting industry.

honey's anime character
When you got the role for Widowmaker, was it for English or French? Because I know you do both.

honey's anime character
I do both. But when I auditioned, it was for the English version. And then... I could have actually not got the French, I had to audition for French as well, even once Blizzard approved me in English. Yeah, I started in English. The only reason they came all the way to Paris to find Widowmaker was because they were looking for someone whose French was spotless.

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="blizzard.gamespress.com" url="https://blizzard.gamespress.com/Overwatch" ]
honey's anime character
Has your approach to voicing Widowmaker changed at all since the game's release, and do you have a favorite line that you do for Widowmaker?

honey's anime character
Interesting question! I don't think my... you mean, since it was released? like what could have changed?

honey's anime character
Like for voicing different skins or updates has your approach to voicing Widowmaker changed at all?

honey's anime character
No, I think it's just got much more fun. Because I use to be very very self-conscious. When I started acting [as] Widowmaker, basically when I auditioned, I felt like this was not a character that I was able to play at all because I just couldn't see myself as... I'm a warm, bubbly person! I didn't see myself as pulling this off, I didn't see myself as this confident woman. So I was really like, I felt like I was really trying really hard to pretend. It was like, you know, when little girls wear their mum's shoes or something. And since the game was released and there have been more and more recording sessions, I just now feel comfortable that 'Oh! Ok, she's there.' And I can just have fun recording her.

honey's anime character
So when you're given a character how do you approach to voice that character?

honey's anime character
So to me, whenever someone asks like advice for voice actors, I always say train as an actor. And so I do exactly what I would do if I was on a film or in a theater play. I just concentrate on all the information that is given to me on a character and I rely a lot on the text. One of the things I love about Overwatch is that the writing is exceptional. In just these little bits of texts you get so much personality, and so much about everything that's going and everything that, it comes from somewhere so deep in the character that it's very very helpful. So basically yeah, I rely on the text. And then there's a lot of physicality going on so it's not the same as shooting a film because no one sees me which is really liberating. Like at first you know I was saying I didn't feel confident enough to be Widowmaker in my sneakers, so I would actually come with my high heels and try to, like I could never be seated in recordings, I was always standing like just to get this punch, this thing that she has I thought I lacked.

honey's anime character
I was wondering, when you voice Widowmaker between English and French, do you have any differences in the way you do her? Like with inflection or tone based on language differences?

honey's anime character
Well, that's actually tricky, so... When I record the English version, I record it from scratch. I just basically have the Blizzard team on the line and we have a whole conversation about what's going on and then I deliver the line, and so sometimes that takes like several, several, several takes. When I'm doing the French one, I just hear what has been approved by Blizzard and then I straight away go into it and try to recreate the energy. So, sometimes I'll hear myself with a certain inflection in English but in French, if you do that same inflection it doesn't mean the same thing, like the dynamic of the line doesn't come through, so that can be tricky. The other difference is mainly that when I do her in English I have to put on a French accent and when I do her in French, I just speak French. So I'd say maybe French Widowmaker is closer to Chloe's voice, whereas English speaking Widowmaker, there's a difference.

honey's anime character
Did you expect the Overwatch community to be as big as it was? (Chloe: NO.) Because I know you've done skits with Sombra's voice actor that have like millions of views and outside the game itself people still are loving the voice actors, what was your reaction to that?

honey's anime character
So my reaction is wonderment... I'm not a gamer, I've never been except when I was like a teenager and I'd play a bit of Crash Bandicoot and stuff like that. But I've never really been into this community so first of all, I discovered this whole community. As a professional actress, you feel very humbled and grateful that 'Wow! All these people are taking interest in one of the projects you're actually in!' But it's also allowed me to discover a lot more about this community. I mean, to be completely honest I was probably one of these people that use to think ' You know kids should be outside more' and things like that. I didn't really get it but what I have come to understand through discovering the Overwatch community is that people can connect in a way through this game that is very very real, very authentic, that they have this space where they can completely be themselves. They build friendships that are like for life, and so yeah, it's made me open my eyes to things I thought I knew but didn't.

honey's anime character
What would you say has had the biggest impact on your career? Support-wise or influence.

honey's anime character
So I'd say, that's an interesting question... I'd say there's someone who's become a really good friend of mine but before was an acting teacher that I met when I was 19, and he's always been there and I love his teaching and I love his method, and I've assisted him in several of his shows when he was directing and yeah, his name is Jordan Beswich. His presence throughout all these years in my professional and my personal life has kind of really really helped me. But a person that I really look up to a lot but that is actually an artist who is dead now is Niki de Saint Phalle, I don't know if anyone knows her, she was a woman artist in like the 60's and 70's in France, she's half American and she does art that has no limit, she was always making these huge pieces of art, sculpting and everything, and she helped me a lot at a time when I was, without noticing, limiting myself and making myself small and yeah, her work encouraged me to like break walls and go as far as I could.

honey's anime character
What advice would you give to other actors or those who want to get into voice acting or that field of work?

honey's anime character
So, take good acting classes. I think that's the basis of it all. In a way, I think it's more important than voice itself. I think the voice will always follow if the energy is there, um, I feel like once you connect the right dots something just, I don't know, comes out of you. I'd also recommend using the tools that we have at our disposal today which we didn't when I started as a voice actor which is like the internet, and vlogging, and Instagram, and all these things, you can actually just promote yourself and get people to hear what you do. I remember seeing an interview of Elizabeth Gilbert a few years back; she's the author of a book called Eat Pray Love, and she was saying "You always hear of people who want to become writers but are so afraid that anyone will read what they're writing, like they don't want anyone to read it. And it's like no, if you want to write, you HAVE to make sure everyone reads what you write. Even if you're not 'there' yet." And I'd say the same thing, if you wanna be a voice actor, the number one thing is you're going to be heard. So put yourself out there.

honey's anime character
So would you rather do voice acting in English or French?

honey's anime character
Oh! I'd say it's the same to me. Generally speaking, I prefer acting in English because the language itself is much more physical I'd say. French is a very intellectual language, I don't know how to explain it otherwise. But you can feel it, I don't know. But it's shorter, punchier, you can get a lot said with very few words in English, which is not something that is possible in French. In French, you have to have like long words and long sentences and so, I don't know, it's less dramatic.

honey's anime character
If you could voice any other hero in Overwatch, who would it be?

honey's anime character
* Laughs * Ok, um, so this is probably just a fantasy, so I'm not saying I can actually do the voice, I will state that I believe that every actor in Overwatch is the best actor for their character but I would like to say [Zarya voice] "I am the strongest woman in the world". I could do Zarya.

honey's anime character
What's something you're passionate about outside of acting?

honey's anime character
I guess I'd have to say, I'm passionate about food! I love food. And I'm passionate about writing, which is another part of my career. But basically, it all sums up I'm passionate about people. I love people, I love talking to people, I love reading about people, I love reading their stories and journeys, yeah.

honey's anime character
What are the major, if any, differences in voice acting in French and in English, not just language-wise...

honey's anime character
Most of the great, great cartoons and like.... are American companies based in America or in London and even in the movie business... Basically, you have a wider range of interesting projects in the US and the UK which you don't have in France. I'd say that's the only difference cause then, well I mean no, it is the only difference but then you have a lot of consequences because it means in the US and UK you have a lot more actors than in France. So when I'm in France I think I have a lot less competition, for example, than I would if I were living in an English speaking country. But then I also have less opportunity to be like, in a Blizzard game, which was a complete accident. Had they not written a French character I would never have been working for Blizzard. And it wasn't even something I could put on a wishlist because it's not around in France.

honey's anime character
Because you've started to work with Blizzard, has it opened any doors for you like in terms of being in the video game industry or working in the industry in America?

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="blizzard.gamespress.com" url="https://blizzard.gamespress.com/Overwatch" ]
honey's anime character
Not yet... yes... well, actually it has and it hasn't. On a personal level, it has opened so many doors, right? I'm here today! I've been traveling, and every time you travel to a convention you meet someone and everytime you meet someone there's always an opportunity for growth, whether it be on a personal or professional level. So it's been great in that aspect. I think it would open many doors like if I decided to live in LA, actually, I'm sure it would. But for the moment it hasn't. It's just given me this great, great opportunity to travel a lot, meet a lot of my fans, and all that.

honey's anime character
You mentioned that you're a writer, what type of books do you write?

honey's anime character
So I've written, I've published a body-positive memoir and it came out in 2016. And it's called, it's written in French, "Fuck les Régimes!" which translated to... 'screw' diets. And it's about everything that happened after I decided to stop dieting and wanting to be thin.

honey's anime character
A question I like to ask all the Overwatch actors and actresses is, how have you been able to be a hero outside of your voice?

honey's anime character
Aw! Well, by writing a book haha! I get a lot of fan mail from women who've experienced, who've had very bad experiences with their bodies and feel very self-conscious and harmed by the look that society has over them. Yeah, I guess... But also just being in Overwatch, kinda makes you a hero because you get to hear all these stories every day of people who look up to you in times when things are difficult for them, which is very satisfying. One of the great experiences I've had regarding Overwatch was when I went to Blizzcon in 2017 and we went, the whole gang, met a Make a Wish child, and it was just, mindblowing to realize the impact that this game had on this child's life who had been in hospitals a lot and just on his own and struggling through cancer and, yeah it's extremely humbling and kind of... I don’t know, it was an amazing event.

honey's anime character
So I know Carolina has a channel where she uploads skits, would you consider doing that as well? going outside of your comfort zone? I know you like to write, but, would you consider doing more for the Overwatch community?

honey's anime character
How can I answer that question... for the moment, it hasn't, it doesn't feel natural to me. It doesn't feel natural to me so I hadn't really considered it. But I might! Who knows.

honey's anime character
What is your favorite part of the Overwatch community? What's your favorite thing about it?

honey's anime character
Community... yeah. Another thing I've discovered at these conventions and meeting the community, other than everything I've already said, is again, I wrote a whole book on 'Hey, I'm allowed to be whatever I want to be and I don't need to fit into this tiny square!' What I LOVE at conventions is I will meet people who just, cosplayers? I am just fascinated with cosplayers! People who just love a character so much they will just dress as this character, just be it, and I find that amazing the way that, yeah, fans are just people who have a lot of love and I really like these people who let themselves be truly vulnerable in front of us. I always smile to myself when I see someone and you can tell all they want to do is come and speak to me and at the same time all they want to do is run away from me because it's creating all of this emotion and everything and that's really brave! All these people from the community are just very, very brave people.

honey's anime character
I know Widowmaker has been in a bunch of animations, is it different voicing for just the animation as opposed to the game?

honey's anime character
Well, it always is when you're telling a story rather than a situation like the in-game voice lines. Just, you have to get the energy of what is going on in that specific moment. It's more like film when you're doing like a short. But it's always the same components. 'Ok, who am I, who am I speaking to in that specific moment.' so yeah it's different and it's similar.

honey's anime character
How did you find your Widowmaker voice? because I know you mentioned the high heels and standing and stuff, and did you have inspiration from someone?

honey's anime character
So when I started doing Widowmaker I was doing a bit of commercial work at the time as well. And I remember I was looking for the voice I would need to do luxury perfumes. I had this idea in my mind that if I wanted to do luxury perfumes I would have to go like the, be like [sultry French voice] 'Dior’, so when I was asked to audition for Widowmaker, I went straight to that, like, what if this were a perfume ad? And then one thing that helps a lot, [whispers] this is stupid... when I do Widowmaker is that, I see her like a cat, sometimes, when she's like [sing-song voice] ‘I see you' when she's like ready to jump. So, there's the high heels, the cat, yeah, and then the luxury perfume, and then it all kinda like blended into the voice.

Final Thoughts

Despite playing such a powerful femme fatale, Chloe Hollings exudes a kindness and warmth that settles eager fans' beating hearts. Some questions she seemed quite ready for but the smile that would appear on her face when being posed a question she hadn't considered was quite charming. As a treat for fans, she posed with nearby voice actor Chris Parson to throw a few lines out before posing for pictures. She seems to delight in talking with her fans and while not a huge gaming nerd herself, very much appreciates the community supporting her.

You then watch a titillating scene of a man and woman having sex, and you were like, “oh baby!” But then suddenly, bam, the erotic soundtrack Careless Whisper playing in the background stopped and replaced with a Marilyn Manson song as the guy’s dick pierced through the girl’s mouth, and her body ripped in half leaving behind a pool of blood, guts, and traces of semen. That scene was so traumatic, your little boy Jimmy crawled back to his little cottony hiding place, never to leave again. Watching hentai will make or break your interest in it, and getting into hentai is a rite of passage, the road to adulthood, initiation—failure means shame. You gotta start somewhere and Honey-senpai here is gonna help you start with 5 hentai shows that will help you embrace the complexity and beauty of hentai. First, we’ll show you a light-hearted hentai and slowly inch our way to the hardcore. Remember: Once you’ve started, there is no going back! And no worries, you have the option to go through this list in one-handed mode.

5. Sora no Iro, Mizu no Iro — The Vanilla Threesome Experience

This little beauty of a hentai features the art style of famous artist Tony Taka (let’s try and forget the adaptation of Shining Hearts: Shiawase no Pan existed), so the two girls Asa and Natsume are very attractive and the main reasons to even watch this hentai. The story is your typical 2 girls sharing 1 guy, with lots of sex. Sora no Iro, Mizu no Iro is as vanilla as you can get--perfect for someone who is new to hentai.

4. Sono Hanabira ni Kuchizuke wo: Anata to Koibito Tsunagi — True Love, True Yuri

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="dmm.com" url="http://www.dmm.co.jp/mono/anime/-/detail/=/cid=h_465acudl1001/?i3_ref=search&i3_ord=2" ]

It’s kind of annoying and sometimes disgusting to watch hentai with the main guy being an ugly bastard or just generic-looking (like 99% of the time). As we’ve pointed out in number 5, the beautiful girls are the main reason to watch hentai, so what if we take the guys out of the equation and just watch two girls making love? Then look no further! Reo and Mai are two lovebirds in an all-girls school and they spend their free time having sex. Mai is such a perv, she can’t hold back from releasing her carnal desires to the bedridden Reo. But hey, if transferring fever to another person through sex is a good idea, then let these girls do whatever they want. No, that’s not STD.

3. Words Worth — A Timeless Hentai Classic

Hentai shows come, go, and easily forgotten, but despite its age, Wordsworth’s beautiful art and animation withstood the test of time, and it’s so beautifully made, it puts modern hentai to shame. Wordsworth is set in a medieval world where two tribes are embroiled in a never-ending war, and one prince is destined to stop it. A great cast of attractive women, a good balance of vanilla sex, a bit of bestiality and monster sex, all masterfully animated with the most beautiful art style you’ve ever seen, Words Worth is the complete package and you must start here before you try out the hardcore, like next on this list.

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="dmm.com" url="http://www.dmm.co.jp/digital/anime/-/detail/=/cid=168gbbh1043/?i3_ref=search&i3_ord=1" ]

2. Himekishi Lilia — Tentacles and X-Ray Vision

[es][information_general item1 = "Episodios" content1="___content1___" item2="Emisión" content2="___content2___" post_id=""][/es]

Now that you’re accustomed to non-vanilla stuff and lots of x-ray shots, be prepared to experience a hentai that is hardcore, but at the same time won’t discourage you to watch it because there’s scat or the girl’s neck got chewed off by a monster. Himekishi Lilia has all the things that make a hentai hardcore: incest, rape, tentacles, monsters with two dicks, tons of x-ray shots all wrapped together with detailed animations and good art appropriate for its content. Lilia is the main character of the story and after her brother forcibly took the king’s throne, she is subjected to unspeaking and horrible things drinking a goblet full of semen, get gang-raped by the townsfolk, and getting raped by monsters. This anime is not for the faint of heart.

1. Boku no Pico — The Internet’s Most Favorite Hentai

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="B000VZE1W2" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]
[en][information_general item1 = "Episodes" content1="1" item2="Aired" content2="September 2006" post_id=""][/en]
[es][information_general item1 = "Episodios" content1="___content1___" item2="Emisión" content2="___content2___" post_id=""][/es]

No, this is not a joke, and no we’re seriously putting Boku no Pico as the ultimate hentai for anyone who is on the hentai pilgrimage or looking for the ultimate test of one’s sanity. Hentai anime focusing on Yaoi is very sparse, and you’re more likely to encounter monster sex hentai and hetero ones. Boku no Pico is special and “shock” is probably the best way to describe the anime, and people on the internet use Boku no Pico to deceive the uninformed that it’s the title of the anime they’re looking for or a perfect prank to give your friends on April Fools. A grown man in love with a feminine boy and loves making sex with him? That’s Boku no Pico and it’s more hardcore than the most violent monster hentai out there. And it’s not an exaggeration! Godspeed, dear reader!

Final Thoughts

And there you go! Now wasn’t that a very nice ride! Following hentai requires finesse and care because your impression of hentai will differ depending on what shows you got yourself exposed to. A gang-rape hentai isn’t the best way to start, but if you start with a hentai with romance, a proper story, and pacing, then you’ll be more welcoming rather than disgusted of hentai. Yeah, it’s unfortunate a lot of people frown upon hentai, but we hope this list will show them that hentai isn’t all about rape and monsters. We ask you, dear readers, what hentai titles do you know you’ll recommend to someone new to hentai? Oh and, you can let go of your stick now. The ride is already over. You perv.

Top 10 Banned/Removed Games on Steam [Best Recommendations]

Do you want a list of banned games on Steam? Name every pornographic game in existence! But seriously, it’s hard to find games that were outright banned on Steam because we’ll never see them since Steam won’t put them in the catalogue in the first place. The only few instances the game has been banned--though, the words “banned” and “removed” are interchangeable--are when the developers were vocal, or a game that was in the catalogue suddenly vanished due to unverified reports, or games got removed due to expired licenses, or even games got banned in certain counties due to violations of their specific laws, or deemed too explicit according to their beliefs. Honey’s Anime is going to list 10 games that were removed or banned from the Steam catalogue, and we’ll try to explain why certain games vanished without any official statements. And since we mentioned about indie gaming, we’ll take a glimpse at its dark side in one of our entries.

10. Paranautical Activity

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]
[en][information_general item1 = "System" content1="PC, Linux, Mac, PS4, Xbox One, Vita, Wii U" item2="Publisher" content2="CodeAvarice" item3="Developer" content3="CodeAvarice" item4="Release Dates" content4="September 5, 2013" post_id="" ][/en]
[es][information_general item1 = "Compañía" content1="PC, Linux, Mac, PS4, Xbox One, Vita, Wii U" item2="Lanzamiento" content2="CodeAvarice" item3="Géneros" content3="CodeAvarice" item4="Plataforma" content4="___content4___" post_id="" ][/es]

Paranautical Activity is a roguelike first-person shooter where you’re dropped into a randomly-generated room and kill everything that moves while finding power ups to help you survive the next randomly-generated area. With Minecraft-like aesthetic with a you-die-go-back-at-the-start mechanic, Paranautical Activity is gonna test your skills, but you’ll end up raging anyways because of cheap deaths being thrown at you . Remember what we said in the Indie Games article about indie gaming not being the saints we are led to believe? This game and its developer Code Avarice are an example of those with inflated egos, and with little respect for everyone because they’re high above the social ladder. What happened was when Paranautical Activity was published, Valve erroneously labeled the game as Early Access and one of the developers of Code Avarice claimed Valve wasn’t speedy on fixing the issue. What’s the next logical thing to do? Why, go and whine on Twitter, insult Steam, and threatens to kill the co-founder of Steam, Gabe Newell! Valve then later removed Paranautical Activity from Steam’s catalogue and ceased relations with Code Avarice. Paranautical Activity resurfaced on Steam as Paranautical Activity: Deluxe Atonement Edition and the reason the game was accepted by Valve is because Code Avarice has sold the rights to the game to Digerati Distribution. Let’s make things clear here: Valve banned the game due to the developer’s immature outbursts and declaring threats to end the life of Gabe Newell on Twitter, but since Paranautical Activity is no longer owned by the said developer, it was allowed back onto Steam. And that’s for the better because the game would’ve never seen the light of day if it remained with Code Avarice. And seriously, was it really that hard to make one phone call or email to Valve to fix the issue, wait it out, and call it a day?

9. Ride to Hell: Retribution

[sourceLink asin="B00BRQP27M" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]
[en][information_general item1 = "System" content1="PC, PS3, Xbox 360" item2="Publisher" content2="Deep Silver" item3="Developer" content3="Eutechnyx" item4="Release Dates" content4="June 25, 2013" post_id="" ][/en]

Considered to be one of the worst, if not, the worst game ever made, Ride to Hell: Retribution is a third-person action brawler and shooter involving a badass biker dude seeking revenge. The game that went through development hell resulting in poor planning, bad writing, broken gameplay, ugly graphics, it’s offensive and is riddled with bugs. The series was planned to spawn 2 more sequels but they were cancelled due to negative reviews and poor sales. The game stayed in Steam for around a year, and it enjoyed a few sales (maybe because one popular gaming critic encouraged everyone to try out this mess of a game) before it was mysteriously removed from Steam’s library. The exact reason for its removal is unknown but popular speculation pointed out that Ride to Hell was so bad, it didn’t meet the quality standards set out by Steam. Or maybe perhaps it was removed because of how the game treated women? But given Valve’s negligence to quality control and police awful “games” that uses reused assets, it’s safe to say Ride to Hell: Retribution wasn’t removed because of poor quality, and it was something else. This is perhaps a mystery that we’ll take to our graves, unfortunately.

8. Spec Ops: The Line

[sourceLink asin="B007UYAXIS" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]
[en][information_general item1 = "System" content1="PC, Linux, Mac, PS3, Xbox 360" item2="Publisher" content2="2K Games" item3="Developer" content3="Yager" item4="Release Dates" content4="June 26, 2012" post_id="" ][/en]
[es][information_general item1 = "Compañía" content1="___content1___" item2="Lanzamiento" content2="___content2___" item3="Géneros" content3="___content3___" item4="Plataforma" content4="___content4___" post_id="" ][/es]

Spec Ops: The Line takes place in the once beautiful city of Dubai after it was consumed by massive sandstorms. Millions of citizens are trapped, riots break out frequently and resources like food and clean drinking water are dwindling, Dubai is descending into chaos. The US 33rd Infantry Battalion led by the highly decorated Colonel John Konrad, already stationed at the city, volunteered to help with the evacuation and relief efforts. As the battalion struggles to maintain order, John Konrad has declared martial law and committed atrocities on the populace. You play as Captain Walker of the 3-man delta force sent by the US military to conduct reconnaissance inside the ruined city, find survivors and get the hell out. The United Arab Emirates is very strict in allowing games into their shores. If a game has violence, nudity, gore or anything relating to the UAE, it’s likely to get banned. A lot of high profile games were also banned like the Grand Theft Auto series, God of War series, and even Japanese games that are notorious for sexually suggestive content, but these games either got their ban lifted after minor alterations, or the ban didn’t extend to digital distribution platforms like Steam. The only high profile game that is permanently banned in the UAE in both physical and digital versions is Spec Ops: The Line. But why is that? A game portraying violence and gameplay involving killing US soldiers and Emirates in a ruined Dubai, thus implying the incompetence of the UAE government, didn’t bode well to the censorship board. The UAE even goes as far as to block the official website of the game, had the game banned in neighboring nations, and made it impossible to get a copy. That is very quite unfortunate because Spec Ops: The Line is a decently-made game with a compelling story that makes you question our existence as human beings.

7. Art of Stealth

[en][information_general item1 = "System" content1="PC" item2="Publisher" content2="Matan Cohen" item3="Developer" content3="Matan Cohen" item4="Release Dates" content4="January 12, 2017" post_id="" ][/en]

Art of Stealth is another game that is composed of Unity store assets all cobbled together in what appears to be a stealth game… where you instead shoot at enemies like Rambo… or something like that. The game itself got a few fans, a ton of negative reviews, and with Steam’s poor moderation, Art of Stealth wasn’t the target for removal or getting banned because it contains offensive content. Art of Stealth was removed because developer Matan Cohen was caught manipulating his game’s review rating by posting positive reviews using multiple Steam accounts. This desperate act is in violation of Steam’s review policy and Art of Stealth is no longer on Steam. Yeah… That happened. And twice apparently because…

6. Wild Buster: Heroes of Titan

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]
[en][information_general item1 = "System" content1="PC" item2="Publisher" content2="Insel Games Ltd." item3="Developer" content3="Nuriworks" item4="Release Dates" content4="December 14, 2017" post_id="" ][/en]

Wild Busters: Heroes of Titan was also removed from Steam because game publisher Insel Games manipulated the Steam reviews by telling its staff and colleagues to buy the game and post positive reviews to encourage sales, and failure to do so may face possible unemployment. And since this is a ban on the publisher, other games published by Insel Games were also removed. “In a war-torn galaxy, the Broken, an aggressive cyborg race, are hell-bent on dooming the remaining humans to the same desolate half-man-half-machine fate. Collect and level more than a dozen varied characters to master PvE and PvP features, and prevent the complete annihilation of mankind!” --Wild Buster Website Now, this is kind of sad because Wild Busters is an actual game and some care was put into it. If you’re into hack and slash games with MMO elements, this game might’ve been for you. But sadly the game’s publisher didn’t have any faith in the game and stooped low just to artificially raise the game’s popularity.

5. Manhunt

[sourceLink asin="B0000A8VBZ" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]
[en][information_general item1 = "System" content1="PC, PS2, PS4, Xbox One" item2="Publisher" content2="Rockstar Games, SCEA" item3="Developer" content3="Rockstar North" item4="Release Dates" content4="November 18, 2003" post_id="" ][/en]

Manhunt is legendary and probably synonymous with anything relating to games ban and censorship due to its very graphic violence involving torture and killing your fellow man with an assortment of weapons from baseball bats to bladed objects. And to make it more clear that violence is a core gameplay mechanic, you are graded based on your performance like how brutal your takedowns were. The game is available on Steam, but it’s banned in certain countries, especially in Australia, notorious for very strict censorship rules. Manhunt was a prime target in Australia mainly because your score is based on violence whereas other games like, say, Grand Theft Auto doesn’t score you for murdering the police or civilians. But Manhunt is literally and technically banned everywhere because the bloody game isn’t compatible in any modern operating system starting from Windows Vista.

4. Postal 2

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]
[en][information_general item1 = "System" content1="PC" item2="Publisher" content2="MicroMouse, Whiptail Interactive, Drive, Inc., Running With Scissors" item3="Developer" content3="Running With Scissors" item4="Release Dates" content4="April 14, 2003" post_id="" ][/en]

You are the Postal Dude, just a typical everyman doing chores given at you buying milk, paying fines, or to pick up something from a neighbor. With the freedom of choice, and if you’re creative enough, you can turn these boring menial tasks into fun romps of blood, fire, and destruction. Postal 2 is a sandbox game and like the game advertised, you’re just a guy doing basic tasks for money. And like any sandbox game, you make your own rules and play the game your way. If you want to steal milk? Go ahead and bludgeon the store owner while you’re at it. Wanna rain down the parade of a group marching band, literally speaking? Take out your junk and pee all over them. There are many ways to play Postal 2 and this freedom along with crude dark humor, gamers loved it. The level of violence in Postal 2 is on par with Manhunt, but the difference is violence is, most of the time, optional. Like we said, Postal 2 gives player freedom to choose how they tackle situations, but of course, the game allows you to go full psychopath with the tools available. Kill gay rednecks, Arabs, black people, religious folks and anyone else. Everyone is fair game. Unfortunately, Postal 2 was banned in New Zealand because of its offensive writing, disgusting imagery, brutal gameplay, and extreme political incorrectness. Even owning the game in New Zealand after buying a Steam code online will get you fined and jail time.

3. Grand Theft Auto IV

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="JES1-145" text="" url="" ]
[en][information_general item1 = "System" content1="PC, PS3, Xbox 360" item2="Publisher" content2="Rockstar Games" item3="Developer" content3="Rockstar North" item4="Release Dates" content4="April 29, 2008" post_id="" ][/en]
[es][information_general item1 = "Compañía" content1="___content1___" item2="Lanzamiento" content2="___content2___" item3="Géneros" content3="___content3___" item4="Plataforma" content4="___content4___" post_id="" ][/es]

It is fact video games aren’t the main cause of violence among children. If that were the case, the tens of millions of gamers who played GTA games would have committed mass murder by now. The leading cause is the mental health of individuals and they can get inspirations from any form of media other than video games like violent movies, offensive lyrics from songs, or social media. Sadly for video gaming though, the murder in Thailand further embedded the stereotype of gamers are violent because of violent games. A troubled youth killed a taxi driver, stabbing him to death because he needed the money to play more video games, specifically Grand Theft Auto IV. The youth claimed Grand Theft Auto-inspired him to commit murder, saying “Killing seemed easy in the game.” Due to this terrible incident, the Thailand police banned the distribution of Grand Theft Auto IV and there are strict penalties for anyone who sells the game through any means. Grand Theft Auto games have been heavily criticized for its glorification of crime ranging from killing, robbery, hijacking, drugs, gang violence and sex, all wrapped up in a third-person gameplay. And while the game is a work of fiction and it’s strictly for older gamers, any smart kid can get a copy easily, or their parents blindly buy their children games without reading the ratings slapped on the cover.

2. A Kiss for the Petals -- Maidens of Michael

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]
[en][information_general item1 = "System" content1="PC, Linux, Mac" item2="Publisher" content2="YurinYurin, MangaGamer" item3="Developer" content3="St. Michael’s Girls School" item4="Release Dates" content4="February 22, 2018" post_id="" ][/en]

This is the most recent and highly-anticipated title that was removed from Steam soon after it went live on the platform. Users who have pre-ordered the visual novel or bought it as soon as it came out can still experience it, but it’s tough luck for everybody else. The title’s removal was caused after a Steam user filed a report to Steam Support that Maiden’s of Michael contains sexual content of young girls. The Steam user posted a screenshot of the report they have made and bragged about it on social media. Yes, Maidens of Michael was removed because of an internet troll seeking attention. As for the title itself, the all-ages version of Maidens of Michael had all its sex scenes, imagery and dialogue removed prior to release, so there was no violation of Steam’s Terms of Service. As of this writing, there is no official statement from Valve as to why Maidens of Michael has been removed or any sign of the visual novel returning to Steam. However, fans of the series and fans of visual novels, in general, pointed their fingers at Steam’s incompetence at handling the situation. Was Maidens of Michael removed due to sexual content? Or is it something else? We will never know for sure, but let’s hope Maidens of Michael return to Steam because Maidens of Michael is a collection of touching stories of girls falling in love with each other.

1. The Slaughtering Grounds

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]
[en][information_general item1 = "System" content1="PC" item2="Publisher" content2="Digital Homicide Studios under the pseudonym Imminent Uprising" item3="Developer" content3="Digital Homicide Studios under the pseudonym Imminent Uprising" item4="Release Dates" content4="October 31, 2014" post_id="" ][/en]

You could say the Slaughtering Grounds is the poster boy for awful games that are recycled demo games found in the Unity Engine asset store getting past Steam’s poor moderated early access program called Steam Greenlight. The shenanigans started when YouTube critic Jim Sterling made a video harshly criticizing Slaughtering Grounds with its slapdash unaltered game assets the developer--Digital Homicide--taken from a store, broken gameplay because the devs crammed random things and didn't code them properly, and everything else you can think of. What is Slaughtering Grounds all about? It’s a first-person shooter and you’re in a large area, and uh… you shoot monsters, and uh… that’s it. For any sane person, that was it---a critic calling an awful game awful, called it a day, and move on with your life. But nope, Digital Homicide was upset at Jim Sterling’s criticism and went on a meltdown. The meltdown and its coverage spread like wildfire for anyone who took notice, and the reviews section of the Slaughtering Grounds is flooded with negative reviews, gaming forums made posts showing evidence Digital Homicide took assets from other sources without crediting the creators. Digital Homicide then proceeded to ban players for negative comments because they’re hurting their sales and even sued Jim Sterling for millions of dollars for libel and slander. Oh, and it didn’t end there! It was then soon discovered that the founder/owner of Digital Homicide managed several game publishing companies in order to sell more games on Steam. Gamers grew tired of the massive influx of “fake games” coming to Steam, so they vented their anger in their reviews, even going as far as threatening to kill the developers. If you think a simple submission to Steam Support to penalize abusive users was the logical choice, then you’re mistaken---Digital Homicide (or which one of their companies they manage) sued 100 of these Steam users for millions of dollars. And in that instant, Valve ceased relations with Digital Homicide and removed all of their games from Steam for being hostile of their user base.

Final Thoughts

And there you have it! Games are banned in certain regions because, let’s face it, this little blue planet called Earth is the home of diverse cultures and beliefs. Some nations view the world differently, so sometimes the views of one nation may conflict with another. It sucks, but sadly that’s how the world works. Some games, however, are banned or removed without any official statement, so all we can do is speculate. And some games were banned because the developers were dicks, thinking they can get away with insults and lawsuits. Digital Homicide Studios is the prime example of developers who try to sell badly-made games and will censor, or even sue people, for talking negatively about them or their games. Heck, they’re not even game developers; they’re more like opportunists caring more about earning money rather than creating fun and engaging games. If you’re an aspiring game developer, please do not follow these people who made one of the biggest mistakes of their lives. Focus on your goals, do not follow trends, respect the opinions of others, handle criticism like an adult, and just make a game you always wanted to make. If you do that, your game and your company will be successful, and gamers will support you.
