The Mooseman - Switch Release Trailer [NOA]

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AZDZpByvEqE&w=560&h=315]

Who it Caters to

It’s not very often that we’re greeted with games that take us beyond the norm and into a world that’s full of mystery. Not just the mystery itself but the curiosities that come along with it and that brings us to The Mooseman is a 2D adventure atmospheric indie title that takes you into a world full of cultural dialogue and stimulating puzzles. Much of the game revolves around the ancient myths pertaining to the finno-ugric culture, and the cultural significance some of the characters play in the evolution of their being. It’s certainly a lot to swallow at first, especially if you don’t really follow the culture in great detail, but in a way, The Mooseman is like a cultural compass that guides you towards the answers that are needed to survive. Anyone looking for a fresh adventure into a world begging to be explored, The Mooseman is certainly a great start since it will captivate you with its simple visuals but reel you in with its enriching stories about the Perm chud’ tribes. If this sounds enticing then keep on reading. We will say though, that in order to truly enjoy this game you must keep an open mind.

What to Expect

There’s nothing groundbreaking about The Mooseman in terms of its visual or gameplay mechanics, but one thing’s for certain and it’s that it certainly stands out in its own unique way. It’s quite rare to have a title that really dives deep into a culture that not many people have heard of, let alone experienced hands on and still move you in some way or another. Whether it be the young woman speaking in her mother tongue to explain the story or the symbolic gestures that are emphasized throughout much of your gameplay experience, The Mooseman carries its own torch and does so in a splendid way. There’s a ton of information jam packed into this game that are all referenced and portrayed in a very captivating way, even making us google Shamanism more often than not just to learn more about in depth. The gameplay has you racing through the many plains as a hunter, while everything is being narrated on the go. Items you discover all have their own distinct history and it’s up to you to put these historical pieces together to solve clever puzzles during your journey to uncover the truth about the three layers of the universe. It’s a historical painting come to life.
[ad_top2 class="mt40 mb40"]

Gameplay

Visuals

At first glance, you might think that The Mooseman is bland and bereft of any detail, but once you actually dive deeper into the game, you really start to see just how beautiful everything is. Not just the level design but more so the actual figures and items you interact with all come with their stunning beauty, which only help to better emphasize things. It’s simple but complex and that combination seems to work very well for the game. The cutscenes are truly something to marvel because it uses modern technology along with the finno-ugric style to evoke an emotion as you play, and it’s wonderful.

Sound, Music

In the sound department, The Mooseman once again tries to maintain simplicity while trying to put more of your attention towards the message the game is trying to convey. It’s really like watching ancient history unfold right before you, and every page that’s turned reveals something more fascinating than the next. We never even knew that Bears were considered to be very spiritual creatures until we spent more time playing The Mooseman and realized, wow that’s quite incredible. Surprisingly, there were a lot of animals that we came across that we didn’t know had any association with the spiritual world, so that really opened our cultural eye even more. A lot of the time many of us become so desensitized by the world in which we live in and often forget about the other unique facets of life that exist all around us. The Mooseman combines a subtle sound with powerful undertones to help symbolize evolution, and the layers which many of us ignore but coexist with us naturally.

Mechanics

The Mooseman is mostly about you running in a 2D plane and interacting with the various creatures and deities around you. You have two modes, one which allows you to see things in the dark while the other reveals the true existence of spiritual beings around you. This is where the puzzle feature comes into play because you’ll need to constantly jump between the two perspectives in order to see obstacles in your way, or use said obstacles to create paths for you to progress further into the game. Along the way, you’ll collect artifacts that entail information about said artifact and what role it played in the finno-ugric lifestyle. You’re encouraged to collect all of them since even missing one could throw off the meaning down the road, so making sure to always keep an eye out is key. At times, you’ll also be granted the power of a deity that allows you to traverse to areas that were difficult before, allowing you to discover new artifacts and read more into their ancestral history.
[ad_middle class="mt40 mb40"]

Honey's Gameplay Consensus:

Aside from that, The Mooseman is purely an adventure game with a historical twist, and once you’ve cleared it there’s nothing much to come back to. For the first time playing through it certainly brought fascination to my mind because finno-ugric was never a term that was a normal thing to hear during a conversation, let alone a video game. So this game, in a way, removed that veil of ignorance and opened up a new world of exploration, with its unique approach to gameplay and more so its ability to educate me on the fly. Not many games these days tend to throw in educational references to stimulate you, since most are all about fighting against abnormal creatures, or shooting a group of enemies down for a high kill/death ratio. So our hats go off to the team for making The Mooseman a truly compelling experience from start to finish. A truly unforgettable impression is left with you.

Honey's Pros:

  • Unique approach to creating an experience that combines cultural aesthetics and clever gameplay into one package.
  • The music is very soothing.
  • You learn a lot by playing.

Honey's Cons:

  • The game does end quite quickly.

Honey's Final Verdict:

We hope you found our review of The Mooseman to be an insightful one, and that you perhaps give the game a try and let us know what you think! 20XX Launch Trailer

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wJgwsJvapm8&w=560&h=315]

Who it Caters to

As many of us gamers know, the Mega Man franchise has had its fair share of hits and misses over the years, with much of its popularity waning due to a lack of new software to enjoy. The platformer genre sincerely misses the Blue Bomber because of all the amazing fun and depth each title provided, with speedrunners now even showcasing their skills in completing the classics. Well, a newcomer has now joined the scene, taking inspiration from the classic franchise and throwing in a little more difficulty with its roguelike appeal. We’re talking about 20XX, an indie title that feels like Mega Man, plays like Mega Man, and even looks like Mega Man but with its own unique twist that will certainly give fans a run for their money. At first glance, many will want to point the finger and claim that it’s a clone, but once you do dive into the game and experience it hands on you’ll certainly come to notice a few differences. Anyone who craves a taste for challenge will definitely enjoy 20XX and its roguelike gameplay, encouraging players to really pay close attention to their actions, as one mistake can lead to death and you starting all over again.

What to Expect

Expect there to be a lot of dying in the first few attempts as 20XX is no slouch when it comes to testing your patience. Enemies will pop up and try to knock you off the platform to your death and so your reflexes must be on point in order to avoid peril, but also you’ll need the right timing in order to successfully reach the endpoint without falling. It’s all an enjoyable experience as you encounter new enemies along the way, and due to its roguelike centered gameplay, every attempt you do will feel totally new. What we mean by that is every time you die and start again the stages are all randomly generated meaning that you’ll never experience the same thing twice. This means that your strategy must always be fresh because no path is ever truly the right path, and so strong decision making is imperative along with situational awareness to survive. Boss battles can be intense, especially on the harder difficulties, and so you’ll need to ensure that you level up your items as frequently as possible. You can choose between two characters in the beginning, along with two other characters being available through DLC and a free update so you’ll have a lot to choose from! Just how you’ll overcome each obstacle that stands in your way will be left entirely up to you but one thing is for certain, 20XX is a title that will take your skills to the next level.
[ad_top2 class="mt40 mb40"]

Gameplay

Visuals

20XX takes inspiration from the classic Mega Man X and so on a visual level it encompasses a very retro-like feel. Due to its 2D nature, the game looks stunning while playing in smooth 60fps, with special effects really popping out especially during boss battles. It’s nothing too over the top, but it certainly gives 20XX a nice added modern touch to compliment that throwback aesthetic. Character animations are well done even going as far as adding subtle facial expressions when going for an attack are certainly a plus. The boss designs are really unique along with the enemies you encounter, all of whom have their own distinctive animations as well. Nothing ever really looked stiff or out of place and certainly that contributed to a smooth gameplay experience.

Sound, Music

Anyone out there who craves the nostalgic feeling of hearing that chiptune soundtrack will certainly fall in love with 20XX. As you race through every level taking down every enemy and successfully overcoming every obstacle, the soundtrack just continues to race through your mind and really generates a thrilling experience. It combines old and new very felicitously and doesn’t ever feel contrived in any way, which is a major plus. Often times the modern retro inspired titles try to incorporate way too much sounds, which tend to conflict with each other, but with 20XX, everything just falls into place. It’s by no means a perfect delivery but it certainly provides you with enough of a nostalgic burst of energy to keep you immersed for hours.

Gameplay Mechanics

Moving onto the gameplay, 20XX feels much like Mega Man in every way with the addition of course of the roguelike feature. That new element is what truly brings 20XX to life because now, instead of just racing through each stage with a familiar pattern or technique in mind, you now must tackle every stage with an astute way of thinking otherwise you’ll crash and burn quite often. Now, of course, a roguelike centered title wouldn’t be roguelike without all the deaths but you can certainly avoid pulling your hair out by being more calculated in your approach. One good example is taking advantage of all the items that are bestowed to you throughout the game, making good use of your soul chips. Even if you die, your soul chips will remain which will allow you to re-up on a couple items and power ups, and try again. We mentioned that there are an adequate amount of characters to choose from, all of whom come with their own unique set of attacks for battle. Who you decide to use along your journey is of course up to you, but we found Ace to be an extremely powerful character since his sword has great range, so therefore you can properly space your attacks to avoid taking unnecessary damage. His flaw, of course, is that he needs to be relatively close to the enemy at times to really dish out massive damage whereas other characters can just pew pew their way through without much hassle. So knowing your own playstyle will most certainly help you down the road. 20XX can be played either in solo or with co-op either locally or online which is a huge plus, making some of the more arduous boss battles a little easier especially in the harder difficulties. Another plus about 20XX is that you have multiple difficulty settings to choose from so perhaps if you’re new to the action platformer genre, you can take the easy route and learn the ropes. For the more hardcore and dedicated players, you have the more demanding difficulty that will definitely put you to the test as enemies are less forgiving, and bosses really don’t fool around. Your skills will surely be tested and your understanding of fundamentals will need to be on point, otherwise it’s lights out. In game you’ll come across save points that allow you to either save or not save, with there being no option to save & continue. We found that a bit strange that you can save & quit but not save & continue, which led us to always have to go back to the main screen and jump back into the game to continue playing. It felt a bit cumbersome the first few times but we eventually just got used to it and kept going, though there was a time where the game actually froze and that kind of irritated us. We don’t know if that was a bug but it certainly docked points off because it shouldn’t really randomly freeze like that.
[ad_middle class="mt40 mb40"]

Honey's Gameplay Consensus:

Other than the aforementioned freeze that occured during our save point, the game overall felt really great to us. Time just seemed to zoom by as we continued to discovers new ways to beat bosses, tackle tricky platforms in a skillful manner, and collect as many glory items as possible to better assist us along our journey. Is 20XX worth the nostalgia? Definitely, since it does offer a fresh new take on the platformer genre with the addition of its roguelike gameplay to really spice things up. Had the roguelike feature not been implemented the game would’ve honestly felt stale but we’re glad it was a part of the package, along with all the DLC characters and online play.

Honey's Pros:

  • Nostalgia all day baby! Mega Man inspired is a plus in our books.
  • Controls were easy to understand and visually sharp as well.
  • Online co-op is always a plus.
  • Music is too good!

Honey's Cons:

  • Fixing the save & quit feature would certainly help.

Honey's Final Verdict:

[en]Synopsis[/en][es]Sinopsis[/es]

An alternate ending to Steins;Gate, set in the visual novel’s Beta World Timeline. Okabe has given up on saving Kurisu and returned to his everyday life, but is suffering from flashbacks of the events that happened in the world lines he crossed, and of Kurisu’s death. He has sunk into despair, and starting with Mayuri, who encourages him to visit a mental health clinic, the labmen are worried for him. Before long, even ‘Kyouma Hououin’ has been sealed away… That’s when Okabe meets Kurisu’s former acquaintances and volunteers to become a test subject for Amadeus, a computer system in which Kurisu’s memories have been saved. Using an exclusive application, he can communicate with ‘Kurisu.’ Then one day, a girl comes to the lab for advice - a girl with a striking resemblance to Kurisu.

Three Episode Impression

[ua_synopsis text="Steins;Gate 0 really plays the part of a sequel to the original series. Considering it’s been 7 years since the original anime was aired, you might be a bit rusty so I do recommend rewatching the first series if you wish to really catch everything in Steins;Gate 0, but it won’t detract from your enjoyment of it. It’s really interesting to see Okabe Rintarou after the events from the original series; he’s coping with new life and he’s a university student now. While Rintarou is shown as being steady, it’s easy to tell that he’s got some serious PTSD after the events of Steins;Gate. The first 3 episodes show that Rintarou is still suffering from the PTSD but also seeking out remnants of Kurise, especially in her AI form. Unlike the previous anime and the studio’s Chaos;Head, the only drama in Steins;Gate 0 comes in the form of watching Rintarou trying to cope with PTSD and the depression of losing the love of his life. It’s a real psychological anime that feels very seinen and saddens us to watch; it feels very real, but I cannot help but put hope that something else might happen to Rintarou. I haven’t played the game, but I’m expecting Steins;Gate 0 to become a lot darker and I’m steeling myself for it considering the rather dark and realistic themes shown already."]

Hinamatsuri 2

Nagareboshi
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="NEOBK-1832928" text="" url="" ]

What happens when you mess up really really bad at your job? You get endless meetings with your boss and HR? You get a very stern talking to by your supervisor? Worst case: You get fired. What happens when you do that and you’re a Yakuza? It’s bad. Usually a finger suffices, but for our three main characters, it’s much more dire than that. So, they get two choices, commit seppuku and spill their guts on the floor, or go to Thailand, get gender reassignment surgery, and become cute idols. Which would you do? Spend a lifetime trapped in another gender that isn’t yours–sounds like a living hell–or die right then and there? The three men choose the latter choice and become female idols. Three rough looking men are now changed into cute, adorable idols. The funny thing though, is that they still are the same person which means that they maintain all of their bad habits and quirks. We get to laugh hysterically as they snap into their old yakuza ways while trying to keep up a cute persona. They are popular too which is funny because they’re singing about yazuka rules and methods with a cute idol spin on them. It’s not going to end well for anyone though if they are caught, so they are forced to work under the boss while hiding their true identities and reflecting on where they are now. Originally I thought this was going to be super problematic, but it takes the idea of gender and throws it out the window in a comical manner. I can’t wait to watch this show weekly. If I had to say that the series has a downfall, it would be that this is clearly a ~budget~ anime as the characters do not move much and the voice acting is just superimposed over still scenes. I guess we can’t get everything that we want. But sure hope there is a dating episode!

Uhhhh first impressions…?

Title: Island Ep. 01
Jenangelx3
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="Crunchyroll" url="http://www.crunchyroll.com/island" ]

Well, Island has started and when it comes to first impressions, it falls in the same category as anime like Hundred, and by that we mean, it just starts off so cliche. Let’s just go over the first episode which features an amnesic main character who is drawn to a single thing: the island. Does this sound at all special yet? Then he claims he’s a time traveler, but can’t remember anything else but his name, however he does get brief glimpses of what we are to assume is the future. Oh, and let’s end the episode with Rinne saying if she goes out in the sunlight, she’ll die. Oh yeah, those are the makings for a generic anime that tries too hard to be suspenseful. Oh, and did we mention that apparently Rinne sings and we have to go full on autotune and edit the voice? What does it have to do with anything, I will never know. All the same, this is not a great way to start off Island. I suspect many people are dropping this anime and fast, which is such a shame because the writers are trying so hard on this anime.

Not the typical “bloody mess”

Rod Locksley
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="Crunchyroll" url="http://www.crunchyroll.com/cells-at-work" ]

Hataraku Saibou’s first episode was something I was looking forward since I’ve read the synopsis. Basically, it’s a weird and funny show that puts our insides like a world full of “people” working to function at perfection while avoiding unwanted agents, like germs or bacteria. Our main characters are a red blood cell called AE3803 and a white blood cell called U-1146. So yeah, now there’s more anime cells than the villain in Dragon Ball Z... If you hate biology classes and always underestimate your own body functions, Hataraku Saibou is a great way to learn about some basic and advanced stuff. Who would say a soon-to-be love story could teach you about body parts with complex names or diseases? At least with it’s first episode this anime can teach you about pneumococcus and some of the reasons why this bacteria is bad, or that red blood cells transport oxygen to your lungs, among other things they do. Haemoglobin for the win! But, let’s not forget the important things: is there a love story between the hero white cell and the naive red cell? And there are cute “kids” as platelets reconstructing the body! At least for me, Hataraku Saibou is one of the nice surprises this season. I wish this had existed back when I hated biology at school...

Et tu, Aishela?

Lizzy Nyanko
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="Crunchyroll" url="http://www.crunchyroll.com/record-of-grancrest-war" ]

After finding out that the Mage Academy is the dark force pulling the strings behind the ongoing war between kingdoms and lords, Lady Marrine’s fears are confirmed when a mage announces through their wands that the Mage Academy is purging all the mages who support the lords. And in a very Mission Impossible style, he tells all who are listening to destroy their wands, as they can be spied on and located that way. The Mage Academy and the Lords are officially at war and the academy is taking no prisoners. The birth of the Grancrest is officially a reality and the academy deems the new Emperor and the Lords a threat. The plan is now to unite the Treaty, Union, and Alliance and fight the Mage Academy in Eram. Theo and Siluca’s allies destroy their wands, pledging allegiance to their lords and assuring they are not being spied on, save a few who decide to stay true to the academy and are allowed to just walk away. (Not sure why they didn’t imprison them or something…). Siluca and her father have a sweet moment talking about how they are getting to work together and when Aishela walks into the tent, we find out that she and Siluca are sisters and Aishela is not a big fan of Aubeste. Aubeste, however, thanks Aishela for taking care of Siluca this whole time and calls them both his precious daughters. During this conversation, Aishela mutters that she is not a Meletes anymore… odd… Everyone goes to sleep, including Siluca, who passes out at her desk. Siluca is soon woken up by Aishela, who is asking her to come out. As soon as Siluca steps out… holy crap! An expressionless Aishela takes a literal stab at her chest! WTF!? Oh no! Are we losing our main heroine!? No. Luckily, Irvin stops Aishela right on time and she admits to attempting to murder Siluca and that Theo was her next target. Theo wakes up and they bring Aishela inside, where they strap her down after she admits to being sent by a secret agency from the academy. What a twist! The academy has been watching Siluca all along and it turns out Aishela “tried” to kill her because otherwise, if she didn’t, the academy had placed a spell on her that would kill her. She still loves her sister and did a poor job on purpose. However, the spell or “geas” they placed on Aishela’s chest is activated and is seemingly being murdered through it by the academy’s secret organization. But just as the moment is getting intense and emotional and we think Aishela’s a goner, the sweet Priscilla says “She’s not destined to die here” and pulls out her Holy Grail Crest to free Aishela from the magical shackles of the academy. I knew that girl would come in handy! It was a very exciting episode full of surprises and twists! We didn’t lose any of our favorite girls and things are heating up by the minute! What’s happening next!?

Top 10 Student Council Anime [Updated Best Recommendations]

$
0
0
[ad_top1 class=""]
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="NEOGDS-78744" text="" url="" ]

The Student Council is supposed to be a body of students committed to preserving order within school halls, as well as presenting the needs of their fellow students. As an intermediary between students and teachers, the Student Council always has their work cut out for them – especially in anime, where they tend to be the strongest faction in their schools, their communities and sometimes, the very country! Seeing how important a role they play in schools and anime alike, we figured we put together a list of our favourite anime built around student councils and their activities! Please note that this is an updated article, the older list can be found below with even more recommendations – so let’s get to it!

[ad_top2 class="mt40 mb40"]

10. Seitokai no Ichizon (Student Council’s Discretion)

[sourceLink asin="B00SOPOTNM" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" October 2009 – December 2009 " post_id=""]

Sugisaki Ken attends a school where entry into the student council can be guaranteed if one scores the highest on the exams. However, he has always had below average grades, so we worked hard to improve them so he can enter the council and live out his dream – to be fawned over by a harem of beautiful girls! Unfortunately for Ken, his achievement isn’t enough to get their attention and they reject his advances, choosing to do their jobs instead of entertain him. Be that as it may, Ken is a simple man with a simple wish and won’t stop working hard to grant them himself! While most anime tend to exaggerate the power that a student council can exercise over the student body, Seitokai no Ichizon plays around with the interactions within the student council like it would a regular club at school. In this way, the focus isn’t necessarily on what the student council is capable of, but more on Ken’s dreams to have a harem and his use of the student council as the yellow brick road to his dreams.

9. Himegoto (Secret Princess Himegoto)

[sourceLink asin="B00N3QHYLG" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 13 " aired=" July 2014 – September 2014 " post_id=""]

Arikawa Hime finds himself in a terrible situation when loan sharks come for him in order to settle the debt his parents left him . When the Shimoshina High School student council steps in to settle his debt, they do it under one condition: that Hime join the student council… as a girl! Their timing couldn’t have been more unfortunate for Hime as they found him wearing a French maid outfit and now they won’t allow him to wear anything else as he serves them as their dog for the rest of his high school years. As inconvenient as things may be, Hime is surrounded by pretty girls who dote on him – but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t wish to be free, and of all people, his crossdressing little brother is the only one trying to get him out! Himegoto does what many anime with student councils do, which is to give the student council incredible amounts of affluence and influence. Being able to settle Hime’s debt and effectively own his entire existence as a human being is the kind of hyperbolic representation of the student council as a concept. That aside, the show has a fair amount of humour which is carried through the absurd antics Hime is subject to as a result of the student council at Shimoshina High.

8. Okusama ga Seitokaichou! (My Wife is the Student Council President)

[sourceLink asin="B010OQER3A" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" July 2015 – September 2015 " post_id=""]

Izumi Hayato is a straight-laced and studious individual running for Student Council President; however he is completely outmatched by his rival, Wakana Ui after she promises sex-ed and free condoms among other reforms. Disappointed, Hayato settles into his role as Vice-President. Next thing Hayato knows, Ui has moved in with him in order to honour a promise that their parents made a long time ago – that their children would marry each other. Now Hayato and Ui are forced to balance their personal life with their student council roles, but is it really that simple? Throwing romance straight into the student council-centred plot, Okusama ga Seitokaichou! makes use of a formula we’re quite familiar within the anime medium. Each episode is short and covers a bit of the relationship between Hayato and his wife, Ui, who he soon learns has more to her than the persona he’s used to seeing at school. Still somewhat bitter about losing the running for student council president while balancing a clear attraction to her – the conflicting emotions and angst make for quite the entertaining student council anime.

7. Kujibiki♥Unbalance

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="LACA-5573" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" July 2006 – December 2006 " post_id=""]

Rikkyouin High School is a prestigious school which makes use of chance to select every year’s student council. They do this by means of a lottery and on the first day of school, Enomoto Chihiro wins the presidency, with his childhood friend, Akiyama Tokino stepping up as vice-president. However, their ascension isn’t without difficulty as they must first complete a one year apprenticeship under the current student council and should they fail at any point, it means immediate expulsion! Kujibiki♥Unbalance is a unique title given the fact that it began as an anime within the anime Genshiken, which followed the activities of a university anime and gaming society. Again we’re faced with anime’s hyperbole: the intensely influential student council; however, the unique aspect is the way in which both student council president and vice-president are selected via lottery. The show is meant to cram as many anime tropes as possible and as such, is wildly entertaining for those who recognise them.

6. Angel Beats!

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="sentai" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 13 " aired=" April 2010 – June 2010 " post_id=""]

Otonashi wakes up to find out that he’s actually dead and has no memories apart from his last name. A girl named Yuri, armed with a rifle, explains to him that they’re in the afterlife and she leads a faction known as the Shinda Sekai Sensen (Afterlife Battlefront), waging war against a girl named Angel. Seeing Angel for himself, Otonashi refuses to believe that she’s evil and tries to talk to her. It doesn’t end well. After the encounter, he decides to join the Afterlife Battlefront in their war against Angel while fighting off a strange attraction to her. Death, emotions and regrets are rife in Angel Beats!, which aren’t usually the themes you’d find in a student council anime. In fact, the idea that Angel Beats! is a student council anime takes a backseat until one considers the role Angel plays in their afterlife environment, which is a high school. Angel is the student council president whose role is to ensure that students at the Afterlife School can cope with their personal problems.

5. Shimoneta to Iu Gainen ga Sonzai Shinai Taikutsu na Sekai (Shimoneta: A Boring World Where the Concept of Dirty Jokes Does Not Exist)

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="KIBA-2214" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" July 2015 - September 2015 " post_id=""]

When Japan introduces strict morality laws which police everything considered obscene and impure, it becomes a chaste society. People are monitored via special collars which ensure that not a vulgar thing is uttered or done. In this world of chastity, Okuma Tanukichi, the son of a notorious terrorist who opposed the laws, has just entered high school. He decides to help the student council in order to get closer to his childhood crush, Nishikinomiya Anna – the student council president. However, when Kajou Ayame, the vice-president, reveals her secret identity as a criminal dedicated to opposing the chastity laws, she drags Tanukichi into her terrorist organisation, SOX, where he too will spread obscene material all in the name of freedom. In the name of all things lewd, Shimoneta plays with anime’s tendency to have all-powerful student councils. The absurdity of it all compounds the humour of the premise – trust Shimoneta to put together a band of eccentric and wacky characters to deliver puns, jokes and wild adventures! The student council president, Nishikinomiya Anna, is an overzealous defender of the law – but also a total pervert in her own right, which creates the some of the strangest, yet somehow acceptable development of a character in the show. However, you don’t watch Shimoneta for character development – you watch it for the banter!

4. KILL la KILL

When her father is murdered, Matoi Ryuuko searches for his killer, with nothing to go on but the half of the Scissor Blade used in the crime. She arrives at Honnouji Academy, a prestigious school with an all-powerful student council led by the cold-hearted Kiryuuin Satsuki and her powerful allies, the Elite Four. Honnouji’s hierarchical dynamic gives Satsuki the space to bestow the higher-ups special “Goku Uniforms”, which grant their wearer superhuman abilities. After suffering a crushing defeat from a student in a Goku uniform, Ryuuko heads home and finds Senketsu, a sentient set of clothing called Kamui, which provides her with incredible power when in contact with her blood. Now dressed for the occasion, Ryuuko stands against the Elite Four and Satsuki in order to find her father’s killer and put them to justice. Fast-paced and exciting, KILL la KILL is one title on this list which reflects several different anime tropes in the same setting, while having a hand firm on its action and comedic elements. KILL la KILL feels like a shounen anime with slapstick humour thrown in for effect. The student council in this show is like that of many other anime: powerful. Intensely powerful in both status and physical prowess, the student council in KILL la KILL is one which quickly comes to mind when the subject is student councils.

3. Prison School

[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" July 2015 – September 2015 " post_id=""]

Hachimitsu Private Academy is a prestigious all-girls boarding school located on the outskirts of Tokyo, known for its impeccable education and discipline. However, a change in policy opens the school’s doors to male students for the first time, so Kiyoshi, Gakuto, Shingo, Andre and Jo are the first male students, making the female to male ratio in the school a whopping 200:1. Finding themselves unable to talk to any girls, the five boys decide to do something more daring than mere communication: peeping into the girls’ bath. Their plan is quickly foiled by the Underground Student Council, who then send them into the school’s prison for a month as their punishment. They now have to stick together to get through a gruelling struggle which will test the strength of their friendship. Controversial given the state of the main characters and their antics, Prison School is an anime one takes with a grain of salt. Be that as it may, their student council is terrifying and their overall hold on the school is extensive – their word is absolute. Their running of Hachimitsu Private Academy is thorough and with an iron fist – the harsh prison that the five boys in which the five boys end up doing time is yet another aspect of their iron-fisted rule.

Seika High School is a school under transition. Going from being an all-boys to a co-ed, Seika’s student council president, Ayuzawa Misaki, uses any means necessary to ensure that the girls can settle into their new environment, earning her the nickname “Demon President”. However, the seemingly perfect student council president has an embarrassing secret – she works part-time at a maid café in order to help her struggling family. Her job remains hidden until Usui Takumi, the most popular boy in school, strolls into the maid café. Misaki fears that he could ruin her reputation with what he now knows, but perhaps Usui has other plans for the secret they now both share. Given that the protagonist is the student council president, much of the events in the show surround Misaki’s heavy involvement in school affairs which parallel her maid café duties. Naturally, the show treads into the territory of romance as Misaki’s relationship with Usui develops around their shared protection of the state of Misaki’s home situation and her working life.

Ousai Private Academy is a former all-girls school now opening its door to male students. On his first day, Tsuda Takatoshi is called out for his messy uniform by the eccentric student council president, Amakusa Shino. As a result, Tsuda is late for his first class. In apology for keeping him too long, Shino offers Tsuda the position of vice-president and he is forced into the role even before he sets foot into the school building. Tsuda soon realises how strange the members of the student council truly are – despite their serious appearances, Shino and the secretary, Shichijou Aria, are huge perverts and crack lewd jokes at every opportunity. Their treasurer, Hagimura Suzu, is fairly normal but is highly self-conscious of her height, which often has her mistaken for an elementary school kid. Surrounded by his new colleagues at his new school, Tsuda must perform his student council duties. The main characters of this series are all student council members and thus most of their activities happen within the bounds of their school. Tsuda’s student council affiliations begin as a result of the sheer amount of power the student council has at Ousai Private Academy, with their activities seemingly overshadowing students’ obligations to attend class. This is of course proven in the initial interaction between Tsuda and Shino.

Final Thoughts

Student councils in real life are an integral part to the smooth-running of any school and allow students to become acquainted with responsibilities they may or may not find themselves having to perform later on in life. From a less boring perspective; however, the student council is as much an anime trope as any other and has yielded a fair crop of highly entertaining titles. Are there any student council shows we’re not aware of? Drop a comment below and tell us all about it – no need to tell the student council on us!

Anime revolving around school clubs can be found in abundance. Almost every club imaginable has been featured in anime and you might think that this is all there is to high school life. But you are forgetting about one of the most important aspects of student life - the student council.

Today we compiled a Top 10 list with the best student council anime. Our choices are broad and each show depicts a different version of student councils. Some of these anime solely revolve around school life and working together with your classmates, others however get more creative and take the members of the student council on a crazy ride.

What they all have in common though is the responsibility that the council members have towards improving their schools the best they can.

So what are we waiting for? Enjoy!

10. Gokujou Seitokai (Best Student Council)

Gokujou Seitokai dvd
[Information episodes=" 26 " aired=" April 2005 - September 2005 "]

Let’s start this list off with a show that already hints at its content with its name: Best Student Council.

The story is set at Miyagami Private Academy, a prestigious all-girls school. Normally, a talentless and air-headed girl like Randou Rino would never be able to enroll, but luck as well as a mysterious assistant helped her getting into the school. Not only that, but Rino becomes part of the so-called Best Student Council, consisting of the most elite girls of the school. Together with the other members Rino not only has to create a great school environment for her classmates, but also overcome her own obstacles.

Gokujou Seitokai is a lesser-known anime that might deserve more recognition. Maybe it’s the combination of weird Rino with her even weirder hand puppet Pucchan that puts off possible viewers. Gokujo Seitokai definitely has great ideas and creates a solid school/comedy anime with memorable characters. Give it a try!

9. Love Lab

Love Lab dvd
[Information episodes=" 13 " aired=" July 2013 - September 2013 "]

Let’s move along and talk about a show for the romance lovers out there.

There is no student that is more famous and respected than the student council president. This is definitely the case for Maki, the calm and polite council president of Fujisaki Girls Academy. Classmate Riko couldn’t be more surprised when she walks in on the respected president practicing kissing with a pillow. She is forced to keep it a secret and join Maki in her self-designed Love Lab where she examines all forms of love, from holding hands to kissing.

Even though it might sound like it Love Lab is not a Yuri show, so if you expect some action of that kind you should move along. For all of you that are more interested in fun schools stories you will definitely enjoy Love Lab. It is a crazy anime with lots of comedy and hilariously awkward situations. It is a really heartwarming story of a group of girls that just cannot wait to grow up.

8. Seitokai no Ichizon (Student Council’s Discretion)

Seitokai no Ichizon dvd
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" October 2009 - December 2009 "]

Seitokai no Ichizon tells the story of five student council members who couldn’t be more different from each other.

Hekiyou Academy is rather unique when it comes to its way of choosing the new council members. Each student is elected by a popularity vote, thus all members - which the exception of eroge addict Ken - are cute girls. It doesn’t come as a surprise that the student council is a hot mess and spends its days fighting boredom instead of looking after fellow classmates.

Unlike Love Lab, Seitokai no Ichizon definitely has some ecchi and harem elements to it. However, this is not the main focus of Seitokai no Ichizon - it is a show that makes pop cultural references in the form of a parody. You should take the story with a pinch of salt and don’t take the crazy adventures of this student council too serious. It is a fun comedy which without a doubt will make you laugh.

7. Gakuen Utopia Manabi Straight! (Manabi Straight!)

Manabi Straight dvd
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" January 2007 - March 2007 "]

Let’s move into the future with a crazy show set in the year 2035.

In this not-so-distant future, the birth rate has fallen significantly and schools are closing down all over the country. The students remaining have lost their motivation to study and often choose to skip classes altogether. This is where energetic and passionate Manabi comes in. Even though she just transferred to Seioh Private High School she is elected as the student council president. Manabi has only one goal on her mind: To share her passion for school and to motivate her classmates to feel the same way.

At first glance you might think that Manabi Straight! is one of many overly happy and cute anime shows out there. As it is often the case with anime, you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover. The story wants to tell more than just the fun story of the student council members. There are bittersweet moments and Manabi’s motto of “go straight forward” is something that will stay with you. All in all, it is a show that is as fun as it is educating, so give Manabi Straight! a chance.

6. Medaka Box

medaka box dvd
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" April 2012 - June 2012 "]

Here we have another great show with a more than unique student council and a strong female lead.

The story of Medaka Box begins with a simple idea: student council president Kurokami Medaka sets up a suggestion box at her school for troubled students to ask for advice. The excelling honor student is committed to solve each and every problem submitted to her and together with the other members of the student council a new adventure begins.

Medaka Box tries to combine multiple genres in one anime, like action, comedy, school life and even a little bit of ecchi. Whether the producers succeeded in doing so is up to you to decide. Even though it is not one of the most popular shows out there it is still good for a quick laugh and some funny scenes. This show goes out to all of you who want to see a tough girl leading the student council.

5. Vampire Knight

Vampire Knight DVD
[Information episodes=" 13 " aired=" April 2008 - July 2008 "]

Who says that all student councils must be bright and cheerful? Let me introduce you to a new site of school committees with Vampire Knight.

Elite boarding school Cross Academy has a dark secret - it is an experimental institution admitting vampires in order to see whether they can interact with human students on a day-to-day basis. In order to create peace between the two worlds a special student council referred to as Guardians has been established. Only the two members Yuki and Zero know of the existence of their non-human classmates and have responsibility towards the future of Cross Academy.

Vampire Knight puts a unique spin not only on student councils, but on the school genre as a whole. Even though the producers turned most traditional elements upside down, they still managed to maintain the main essences of a good anime. You can feel the responsibility of the Guardians towards their human classmates and how they strive to create peace between humans and vampires. If you like the idea of student councils, but are bored by common shows then check out Vampire Knight.

4. Shugo Chara!

shugo chara DVD
[Information episodes=" 51 " aired=" October 2007 - September 2008 "]

After a short excursion into the realm of darker and more dramatic anime, let’s come back to how we started with another bright and uplifting show, Shugo Chara!.

Shugo Chara! revolves around that time in a student’s life when you start deciding what you want to be in the future. Unfortunately, Hinamori Amu has no idea what she wants to be. From her strong wish of becoming a new “would-be-self” three different Guardian Characters representing different personalities are born. She is not the only one with Guardian Characters by her side and she soon joins the special student council of her school. Together with their little helpers the members set out to protect the unborn wishes of other kids.

Shugo Chara! is a Shoujo anime that will melt the heart of any little girl. It is colorful, interesting and features lots of transformations including new outfits. The Guardians of the student council are just lovely characters that will make you fall in love with them soon enough. Shugo Chara! takes its viewers on a great adventure and addresses the question of what you truly want to be in life.

3. Seitokai Yakuindomo (Student Council Staff Members)

Seitokai Yakuindomo dvd
[Information episodes=" 13 " aired=" July 2010 - September 2010 "]

How would you feel if you were one of the few boys in a former all-girls school? What might sound like a dream to some of you becomes reality for Takatoshi Tsuda.

Out of sheer convenience Takatoshi decided to enter Ousai Academy, the school located closest to his house. He didn’t think his plan through, as he soon has to find out, and finds himself surrounded by crazy girls in an even crazier school. He gets appointed as vice-president of the local student council and male representative of the whole school. How will his new school life turn out?

Seitokai Yakuindomo is a show for those of you that just want a simple, straightforward show without too much drama or emotional baggage. This anime has an easy feel to it, as if it wasn’t trying too hard to be special or something new. The jokes are equally simple and straight-to-the-point, sometimes also a little bit sexual given the plot, but entertaining nevertheless. All in all, this is a great show that you should check out if you are in the mood for a quick pick-me-up.

2. Charlotte

Charlotte dvd
[Information episodes=" 13 " aired=" July 2015 - September 2015 "]

Charlotte is the most recent anime on this list and one of my personal favorites of the summer season 2015.

Otosaka Yuu is one of those guys that seem to have everything: he is popular, has good looks and just got accepted into one of the most prestigious high schools in the country. What no one knows though is the fact that Yuu uses a special ability - the power to take over the body of his opponents - in order to lead this kind of lifestyle.

His selfish days end when he meets Tomori Nao and her friends. The students with their own special abilities persuade Yuu to transfer to their school and join the student council. Together, they set out to find more kids like them and to save them from their own abilities.

I don’t even know where to start explaining why Charlotte is such a great show. It has promising characters, great animation and the storyline which starts out slow soon takes unexpected twists and turns. However, for this article we want to focus on the student council part of this show and I must say the producers didn’t do a bad job here as well. What’s most important about student councils is the dynamics between the different members and that’s definitely one of the main aspects of Charlotte.

If you haven’t done so already, check out this masterpiece!

1. Kaichou wa Maid-sama! (Class President is a Maid!)

Kaichou wa Maid-sama dvd
[Information episodes=" 26 " aired=" April 2010 - September 2010 "]

Last but not least is not only a great student council anime, but also one of my all-time favorite shows, Kaichou wa Maid-sama!.

Ayuzawa Misaki is the first female student council president at a former all-boys school. She has to have a thick skin in order to be respected; as a result she is seen as a cold-hearted demon without any female charm. Who would have thought that impulsive and strong Misaki leads a second life? In her free time, she works in a Maid Cafe and serves customers in a maid costume and with a smile on her face. Her worst nightmare comes true when one day her classmate Takumi Usui walks in and finds out about her little secret.

We chose Kaichou wa Maid-sama! as our Top 1 not only because it is a great and highly popular anime. Here, you can actually feel Misaki’s love for her school and her classmates and how she strives to improve the school environment. Even though the plot of the anime progresses rapidly and Misaki finds herself entangled in a love story, she still stays true to her roots as a female president. Our top recommendation!

This concludes our list of Top 10 student council anime. We hope you enjoyed our small compilation and maybe found one or two shows you want to check out. Even though the dynamics of student councils are fascinating and definitely interesting enough to be the main theme of anime shows, club life seems to be a more popular topic for the school genre. Whether this is justified or not is up to you to decide.

Let us know in the comment section below what you think of anime featuring student councils as well as our recommendations. Feel free to add your own choices and share your opinions with the community.

[Editorial Tuesday] The History of Production I.G

$

0
[ad_top1 class="mb40"]

Production I.G is one of the most recognizable, prolific, and respected anime studios. The company has been responsible for many popular and culturally important anime titles such as Ghost in the Shell, Pyscho-Pass, Patlabor, Guilty Crown, and Haikyuu!! and has also provided animation for video games like Namco's Tales of series of RPGs and Sakura Wars. In this Editorial Tuesday we're going to discuss the history of Production I.G from early beginnings and major milestones to modern activities.

[ad_top2 class="mt40"]

CREATION – PUTTING THE I AND G INTO PRODUCTION

Production I.G was officially established on December 15, 1987 as “I.G .Tatsunoko” as a break-off group from venerable anime studio Tatsunoko Production (Speed Racer, Ping Pong The Animation, Gatchaman Crowds, etc.). Led by production manager/producer Mitsuhisa Ishikawa and character designer Takayuki Goto (with Ishikawa and Goto being the origin of the “I.G.”) with support from Hideaki Hatta of Kyoto Animation, I.G. Tatsunoko was created as a way to keep the staff who had worked on Tatsunoko's sci-fi anime Zillion together. The company officially changed its name to Production I.G during the last stages of production on the anime movie Patlabor 2 after it became financially separate from Tatsunoko Productions in 1993 (which had previously held 20% of the company's stock). Since becoming its own company, Production I.G has grown tremendously. Technically, the studio currently exists as part of the holding company IG Port Inc., a merger between Production I.G and manga publisher Mag Garden, which also includes major anime producers Wit Studio (Attack on Titan, Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress, The Ancient Magus' Bride, etc.) and XEBEC (Love Hina, Negima!, To Love-Ru, etc.). In addition, Production I.G was heavily involved in the creation of the studio Bee Train Production (known for the .hack// series and El Cazador de la Bruja) which was a subsidiary of Production I.G until becoming independent in 2006. Mitsuhisa Ishikawa remains the CEO of Production I.G and also works as a producer and part-time director. He is also one of the owners of Tatsunoko Production. Ishikawa has publically stated before that the “I.G” could also mean “Itsumo (always) Genki (happy/energetic)” now that he is the sole president but that in reality it still stands for his and Goto's initials.

BREAKOUT SUCCESS & INTERNATIONAL ATTENTION

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="sentai" url="" ]

Production I.G's first major hit under its current name was 1995's Ghost in the Shell by visionary director Mamoru Oshii, who has worked with Production I.G to produce the animation for all of his films since Patlabor: The Movie. Based on the popular manga series of the same name by Masamune Shirow, Oshii's Ghost in the Shell remains one of the most influential and popular anime films of all time. A seminal title in establishing the cyberpunk genre, Ghost in the Shell was also the best-selling home video release of 1996 in the United States and has been a huge inspiration for famous western film directors such the Wachowskis and James Cameron. Production I.G would also be the studio for Oshii's Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence, the first Japanese animated feature to compete for the Palme d'Or at the Festival de Cannes in 2004, along with other Ghost in the Shell works like Kenji Kamiyama's acclaimed TV anime series Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex and, more recently, 2015's Ghost in the Shell: Arise.

[ad_middle class="mt40 mb40"]

(WORLD)WIDE COOPERATION

One of the defining characteristics of Production I.G has been the studio's collaborations with other anime studios and, more uniquely for an anime studio, with non-Japanese companies and properties. Following shortly after the original Ghost in the Shell movie, Production I.G collaborated with GAINAX to produce the animation for Hideaki Anno's acclaimed films: Neon Genesis Evangelion: Death & Rebirth and The End of Evangelion in 1997. The studio would work together with GAINAX again to produce the cult hit OVA series FLCL. Production I.G has also worked on a variety of Western properties and productions. The studio provided the animation for Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill: Vol. 1, the second Batman: Gotham Knight short film (Crossfire), Ezra Koenig's TV series Neo Yokio (co-production with Studio DEEN), and two entries in 343 Industries' Halo Legends short film series (The Duel and Homecoming, the later in cooperation with Bee Train Production). American readers might also remember the mecha-racing series IGPX: Immortal Grand Prix, which Production I.G. co-developed and co-produced with Cartoon Network. This marked the first collaboration between a U.S. cable network and a Japanese anime studio in 2003. Production I.G. has continued the trend with Cartoon Network again for FLCL Progressive and FLCL Alternative, and with Netflix for B: The Beginning.

STUDIO HALLMARKS

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="sentai" url="" ]

Anime viewers have definitely praised the top-notch animation quality that Production I.G is known for, in particular with their action sequences. The studio has been quite forward-thinking in adopting digital techniques and carefully blending traditionally drawn 2D animation with 3D models to both enhance and ease production. Production I.G is probably best known for making science-fiction stories with a philosophical or psychological element to them, with a penchant for characters that are part of police or paramilitary force as seen in Ghost in the Shell, Psycho-Pass, Patlabor, and Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade. The studio has also had its hand in a handful of bizarre, off-the-wall anime like Dead Leaves and FLCL. In addition, Production I.G has recently created some of the most popular and well-regarded sports anime series with Kuroko no Basket (Kuroko's Basketball) in 2012 and Haikyuu!! in 2014. Another hallmark of the studio worth mentioning is high-quality music from both high-profile composers like the legendary Yoko Kanno (Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex) and famous musical groups like The Pillows (FLCL).

INTO THE (LIKELY) BRILLIANT FUTURE

As evidenced by the studio's continual growth, talent, and attitude of staying ahead of the curve in terms of technology and new techniques, we can only imagine great things to keep coming from Production I.G. going forward. After finishing up currently airing series like FLCL Alternative/Progressive and The Legend of the Galactic Heroes: The New Thesis, the next big project for Production I.G looks to be a full 3DCG, motion-captured adaptation of the new Ultraman manga in collaboration with Sola Digital Arts led by duo directors Kenji Kamiyama (Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Eden of the East, etc.) and Shinji Aramaki (Appleseed Alpha, Starship Troopers: Invasion, etc.) which is set to release in 2019. It has also been announced that the same pair will also be working on a new Ghost in the Shell project but no other details are currently known so stay tuned!

FINAL THOUGHTS

Since its foundation in the late 80s, Production I.G has grown from a splinter group from of another company to a powerhouse in the anime industry. The studio has created many memorable and influential works, pioneered techniques that have pushed the industry forward, nurtured new talent, spawned new breakout studios themselves, and been a major force in making anime the international phenomenon that it is today. We at Honey's Anime wish Production I.G. the best of luck going forward, we can't wait to see what the studio has in store for us!

“The Disney World for Shounen fans!”

Introduction

The shounen genre has such a stronghold on the anime sub-culture that it’s hard to determine when it’ll ever stop growing. Walk into any anime related store and you’ll see walls that are plastered with your favorite shounen characters like Goku, Luffy, and more recently Midoriya Izuku from the incredibly popular Boku no Hero Academia series. This brings us to the Jump Victory Carnival which is hands down the Disney World for shounen fans because it’s jam packed with just about everything you’d expect, and more from the globally renowned genre. This genre alone has more iconic characters than any other genre on the market at the moment, and the list just continues to grow day to day. Jump Victory Carnival 2018 commemorates all of these wonderful franchises and allows fans of all ages to come through to enjoy the festivities, such as participating in tournaments for Dragon Ball FighterZ, meeting pro gamers like Kazunoko, as well as Super Smash Bros. Ulti--wait… that’s not shounen?! Yes, that’s right even Nintendo decided to stop through the carnival to give folks a chance to take part in the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate tournament, as well as the popular Mario Tennis Aces! Jump Victory Carnival 2018 is an annual event that takes place twice a year, one in Tokyo and the other in Osaka with the cost of entry being free. Its bigger brother Jump Festa, will be taking place in December so look forward to that as well! In the meantime, let’s jump right into things and tell you more about how exciting this event was!

What to Expect

Jump Victory Carnival 2018 is every shounen fan’s dream come true as it brings together all the popular brands together under one roof, with many other big surprises thrown in for good measure. With the event being free to enter, expect there to be massive crowds of people who are all excited to look at all the different booths, and participate in any events that are happening. At this year’s event, there were a plethora of awesome events to take part in, one of which was trying out the new Boku no Hero Academia One’s Justice game, which to be honest, looks incredible and we can’t wait to play it! Other notable events included, of course, the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate tournament, Mario Tennis tournament, along with others! Since this is such a major event that only takes place once in Tokyo, it’s important to note that lineups will be long no matter what time of the day it is, so be mindful of that if you ever do decide to attend. There are a ton of booths available for families to sit down and play with their children, but who needs to sit down when you have so much to see and do?! Jump Victory Carnival 2018 is such a wonderful event because it brings everyone together despite your age, gender and background. Its goal is to ensure that fans of the genre can really come together and share their passions, laugh about their favorite pastimes, and, of course, take silly selfies with the gigantic inflated shounen characters that are scattered all around the venue. It’s a place where adults can finally take off that mask and be kids again, allowing themselves to be one with their children and even participate in tournaments themselves, which we actually witnessed today!

What to Bring in Order to Enjoy the Event

This year’s Jump Victory Carnival 2018 took place in the scorching hot hell that is Tokyo, with temperatures reaching up to 40 degrees celsius during the mid-day! While the hot and humid weather is commonplace for the Japanese, we recommend that you still come equipped with some water to ensure you don’t melt before going inside. Refreshments and food are supplied within the venue because it’s best to stay hydrated even before getting there, since you’ll need to walk quite a bit from the station anyway. Speaking of walking, we always recommend guests to wear the proper shoes as per tradition, since that’s what you’ll be doing for most of the day. Making sure that you’re in tip top shape throughout the event is imperative to not only your health but more so to enjoy the experience and not complain all the time. Now we mentioned that the event is free to enter, but of course, if you intend to buy any goods from the venue, we suggest bringing along some extra cash since there are always limited edition items available. The theme for Jump Victory Carnival 2018 is “Meet, Receive, Have Fun, and Buy!” and so, make sure that you have all areas covered before leaving your place. If you’re looking to capture your favorite moments and save them to your computer then definitely make sure to carry a portable camera, or of course, just use your smartphone. If you do intend to use the latter just make sure to carry a portable battery charger since outlets are quite limited in the venue, and nothing’s worse than having a low battery at such an exciting event. Last but most certainly not least is, make sure that you carry some sort of bag with you in case you happen to get the urge to splurge and buy more than you intended. Don’t say that you wouldn’t because we’ve all succumbed to the buyer’s curse where we buy one thing, but then before you know it, our bags are full of items. Jump Victory Carnival 2018 is all about fun so be sure to have fun!

What to do While There / What is Available

We’ll admit that our main mission coming into Jump Victory Carnival 2018 was to get some playtime with Super Smash Bros. Ultimate for the Nintendo Switch. It’s been itching us for quite some time, but we finally managed to play it and boy, did we enjoy the experience. Other notable pro players were at the event such as Abadango, the strongest Mewtwo player in Japan and arguably the world, along with Umeki who’s known for his strong Peach play, among many others. The Smash tournament was a free-for-all based style where the winner stays on, and if they can win 3 consecutive times, they take home a brand new Nintendo Switch charging stand. The incentive to win was pretty high since those things don’t come cheap and more notably, it just released onto the market 3 days ago. So winning this charging stand was a huge deal for many who participated. Once we had our fair share of bouts in the Smash arena, we moved on over to watch some of the Mario Tennis tournament which surprisingly had a lot of parents participating in it! Now of course in Japan it’s quite common to see families take part in events together but not on a competitive level, which not only surprised us but impressed us as well. These parents really knew how to play the game and despite losing to the more advanced players they still demonstrated a great level of skill, and proved the testament that age is nothing but a number.

After being satisfied with the Nintendo booth, we wandered around and took some snapshots of those large inflated characters we mentioned earlier, and also got a glimpse at the new Boku no Hero Academia title, One’s Justice, which is slated to release in Japan next month! There was also a booth that showed off the upcoming open world One Piece title called One Piece: World Seeker, which looked amazing on a 4K screen and we simply can’t wait to dive in and play ourselves. For the pro gamers out there who are familiar with Dragon Ball FighterZ Mr. Kazunoko himself was in attendance to take on visitors who felt they have a shot at winning, with winners receiving a cool prize for doing so. All in all this event was a total blast to be at because every booth had something unique to experience whether it was posing with One Piece characters, to having artists skillfully draw your favorite characters, Jump Victory Carnival 2018 is an event that you truly don’t want to miss!

Final Thoughts

Jump Victory Carnival 2018 proved to be a hot event and we were impressed by the entire venue presentation. It truly felt like walking into a carnival where you had plenty of amusement to choose from, great food to chomp on, and just an overall exciting experience getting to meet new and familiar faces. The otaku world is truly a small one and so when we all get together to celebrate our favorite franchises under one roof, not only is that such a remarkably satisfying feeling but it really reminds you that we’re never alone in this world. All you need to do is just step out into the world that you love most and you’ll find others who love exactly what you love! Shounen for life! For all things otaku, be sure to keep it locked here on Honey’s Anime!

Gracing Anime Expo 2018 was the CYBIRD Ikemen Series booth. Otome game fans may recognize such popular titles as “Ikemen Sengoku” and “Midnight Cinderella: Ikemen Royal Romances”. We had the chance to sit down with their booth boy Kuramasu Hiroto and learn more about his work at CYBIRD.

Hiroto Kuramasu
Interview with Hiroto Kuramasu from CYBIRD (Ikemen Series)
[gray-hex-decoration]
Would you like to introduce yourself?
My name is Hiroto Kuramasu and I’m the Ikemen Series English version producer and I’m also the official cosplayer.
What came first, cosplaying or your work with the series?
Cosplay was a small hobby of mine before I started working on the Ikemen Series. Then in 2016 I came to Anime Expo for the first time and I cosplayed for one of the Ikemen Series titles and that was really popular here and in Japan so that’s why I started doing it more constantly. And also, the company started to use me as the official cosplayer for events in Japan, Taiwan, and all over the world.
Do you see a difference between fans in the U.S., Japan, or other countries?
Yeah, all the countries are a little bit different. I would say America is like, the noisiest in a good way! Like, excited! Maybe Japan and Taiwan are the more shy ones, and Singapore is somewhere in the middle. They start as a shy people but when they know they can take photos or do kabedon with me, then they become very excited. Overall, I think Ikemen Series fans are the same all over the world. They like their favorite guys.
How do you choose which characters to cosplay?
Usually, I pick the ones that I like, but I often I talk to the Japanese producer and director and discuss which one I should do cause they might want to use me for a certain character’s promotion. I tend to maybe lean to calm characters, but I’m doing two new characters this Anime Expo and they’re completely different. But it’s a secret for now! (Writer’s note: We would come to find out these were Ray from Ikemen Revolution Isaac from Ikemen Vampire)
What led to you doing things like kabedon and whispering in fans’ ears?
So the kabedon started in 2017, the first time we had this huge booth. We had a team meeting where we wanted to think of something to make our booth more exciting and one of the members suggested kabedon event and at first, I was like “No I can’t do that!”. But they convinced me and I agreed to try and then a switch went on. But it’s really great so many people enjoy it!
Can you explain more the work side of what you do?
My role is producer so I do stuff like decide which game to localize next, allocation of staff, a lot of money related issues, management... and for these kinds of events I decide where to go next and come up with a marketing plan and how to achieve our goals. I also think of the kind of merch people want.
Can you tell us about your newest game, Ikemen Revolution?
Ok! Ikemen Revolution was released in Japanese in 2016. It’s called Revolution because we wanted a revolution for the Ikemen Series. The UI is different, the gameplay is a LITTLE different as it’s a card gacha type. It’s similar to current female-targeted games unlike how Ikemen Series was before. The theme is Alice in Wonderland, everyone’s familiar with the theme. I think Ikemen Revolution is my #1 or #2 game out of the whole series because it’s a fantasy and it’s similar to Sengoku and the protagonist is strong and independent, not like previous otome games. Whenever she wants to say something to the male characters she does, she fights back. It’s also different in that a lot of the characters have colorful hair, for example, Fenrir has purple hair. We wanted to appeal to more diverse tastes and have characters people wanted to cosplay. When you think of cosplay, you want to have colorful hair!
What goes into the decision process for route releases?
We don’t follow the Japanese order all the time, sometimes we’ll release a more popular character or if a character’s birthday is coming up and the timing is right, we do that.
With Revolution being one of your favorites, what’s your next-
Sengoku!! That’s everybody’s favorite. The heroine is probably the strongest one in the whole series. All the characters interact with each other, even in story events and other events. It’s not just between you and him, different characters do things together. In that way, you get to know more about the characters. And in every story, there’s always another character that will love you, so it will encourage you to play their routes too. It’s actually a little surprising that it’s as popular as it is around the world but it’s about more than just romance. It’s about life and surviving. Throughout our talk, Hiroto kept mentioning how influential the fans are in decisions made by the company. He explained that even though it’s a niche market, there are so many wonderful, supportive fans than keep them going, and the English staff is extremely grateful. We left him to continue getting ready to thank those fans with kabedon and whispering sweet words in Japanese to waiting ears.

High School DxD Hero Review - Of Oppai and Dragons

Of Oppai and Dragons

[ad_top2 class="mt40"]

High School DxD has been a powerhouse of the harem ecchi genre for years. It’s combined a rich, expansive lore with meaningful action scenes that put it beyond most other shows in the genre. It’s also had some amazingly memorable scenes further accented by the uncensored releases. Hyoudou Issei has been the most direct and lovable harem MC ever, and the three year break between the last season has gone noticed by fans. Season 4 has brought a lot of changes to the series. New relationships are forged and old ones are strengthened. Issei has powerful new rivals and he can’t hope to defeat them without unleashing new power. Beyond a shounen protagonist, Issei doesn’t just power up, he uses oppai to do so. If oppai is your calling, then High School DxD Hero will become your new favorite show. Here’s our review.

The Retcon of the Older Seasons

The first thing the introductory episode does is take us back to the tail end of season 3, where Issei unleashed an imperfect juggernaut drive to crush Beelzebub and avenge his fallen comrade. Things are a bit different this time around than we previously saw. These changes fall more in line with the rest of the season and apparently the source material as well. Without spoiling too much, if you’ve seen the previous season, you will notice.

Forward Progress

One thing that has plagued harem ecchi comedies is the hesitation of cementing firm relationships. Why make them a couple and shut down the potential other relationships? High School DxD has never faced this issue. Issei has openly desired to become the “Harem King” since early days and is his driving force. Similarly, the girls he has become close to have accepted this and love him regardless. There’s more open affection between the lead characters than has ever been shown previously, and this is a positive change.

Animation Changes

Even a cursory observer can spot the difference in art styles between the previous seasons and Hero. It’s jarring and can be incredibly difficult to accept. As major fans of the series, it became less grating as the season went on. The return of the principal cast alleviated some of the issues, and the cuteness of new Rias Gremory is just as enjoyable as her dignified, beautiful depiction from previous years. We won’t tell you it’s better, but if this is how the series has to proceed to deliver this level of entertainment, it’s an acceptable compromise.

Final Thoughts

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="LACM-14745" url="" a_text="" align="right"]

Hyoudou Issei will face new challenges and even more oppai along his journey, and we hope to join him for years to come. Are you a fan of High School DxD? What’d you think of Hero? Let us know in the comments, we’d love to hear from you!

The people behind the amazing “Shall We Date” series with romance for everyone! For fans of otome games, especially mobile apps, the “Shall We Date” series is well known. Themes range from fairytale settings like “Wizardess Heart” or “Lost Alice” to darker tales like “Blood and Roses” or “Niflheim” as the company prides itself on unique worlds and stories to entertain readers with different interests. They know not all otome game fans are the same and strive to match the desires of their wide audience. Hinni Yanagisawa walked us through the different attractions they had at their setup this year at Anime Expo. After exchanging pleasantries, we got into what Solmare is excited to share with their fans at AX and beyond.

Hinni Yanagisawa
Interview with Hinni Yanagisawa from NTT Solmare (Shall we Date? Series)
[gray-hex-decoration]
Would you like to tell us what all you’ve got here today?
We have the booth divided into 4 different corners. One is for males, with “Moe Ninja Girls”. That’s a game that’s available on Apple Store and Google Play. Basically, you’re raising a ninja girl, making her become stronger. So your ninja girl fights other ninja girls. But today, we’re making YOU fight with her. So girls and guys can fight with her. But she’s pretty strong so if the guys aren’t man enough, they might lose to her and she’ll beat them up. So that’s the first corner. The second corner we have is based on Alice in Wonderland trick art, it’s like 3D art. There’s no wall or floor, and if you look from a certain angle it looks 3D and it looks like you’re falling into Wonderland. And the third one we have a survey where we ask you to pick who’s your favorite guy and favorite girl. That way we can know which guy is the most popular guy in our games. You don’t really know the personality just by looking at them, so it’s just by looks, who do you like the most. Then you get a free bag with the guys on them. And then the last one is our free spinner. It’s a casual game, you do a free spinner and then you can get a prize. So that’s our booth!
Tell us about some of your newer games!
“Lost Alice” and “Moe Ninja Girls” came out about 2 years ago, and our newest one is “My Shelf”. That’s the only game we’re doing right now that’s localized, so it’s got a more American art, comic book style. That way it’s easier for non-otaku or non-otome fans to get into it.
In “Blood and Roses”, you have a next generation continuation of the game. Are you going to be doing that for other games as well?
Right now we’re making a new game coming out in winter that instead of having one theme, it’ll have many different themes. “Lost Alice” is just Alice in Wonderland themed, “Wizardess Heart” is just about wizards, but this game by January or February will have many different themes under one title.
Do you think you’ll have more games for guys in the future or will you still focus mostly on girls?
We’re actually making a second “Moe Ninja Girls” game as an RPG. After all, they’re ninjas, so they’re supposed to be fighting!
What’s something important in all your otome games?
A sense of security. You know they’re not going to cheat on you, they’re not going to look away from you, you’re their princess. Also, if you were to have a relationship with someone but not really know them, it’s kind of awkward. So with every character in every game, we make it so you can really get to know the characters. We also try to have new themes for each game. Our fans don’t want the same story each time. For every game, we have a different scenario writer. We have a producer that checks to make sure it has a certain level of quality but the scenario writers don’t work together.
Tell us more about the motion capture Moe Ninja Girls game!
So in the game, you can throw shuriken and hit the ninja girl, but she’s REALLY strong. And she has magic. Our next ninja game coming out is for girls this winter, and then this one will be coming out after that.
So for the next ninja game, will it be girls can date girls or will they be dating guys?
Actually, we wanted to have it both ways so girls can date girls or guys. In “Love Tangled”, one of the dating options is also a girl.

Hinni mentioned the face cut-outs shaped like Instagram pictures with different boys from the Shall We Date series were just something for people to do while they waited, but ended up being immensely popular. Foreseeably, many women liked posing with their chosen hubby but quite a few guys cozied up for some pictures with shirtless hunks as well. By Saturday, the 4000 limited edition bags has dwindled down but the lines for the new motion capture game remained long. As a company that looks for innovative ways to fulfil fantasy romance for everyone, NTT Solmare has us looking forward to what they come out with next year!

The Far-Reaching Influence of Devilman

$

[ad_top1 class="mb40"]
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="KSCL-6302" text="" url="" ]

Go Nagai’s 1972 manga, Devilman, tells the story of Akira Fudo, a mild-mannered teen who unwittingly gets possessed by a spirit from the underworld and becomes a vicious demon hunter. And just as Nagai’s later project, Mazinger Z, is considered to be one of the biggest influencers of the mecha genre, Devilman has had an enormous impact on the works that came after it. The manga’s top-selling original run, as well as its many adaptations and spin-offs (such as Devilman Lady and Violence Jack), have secured its place in the popular consciousness for the past four decades. Today, Devilman’s influence can be seen across countless genres and even pops up in non-Japanese media on occasion. So let’s take a look at how this classic manga inspired the creators of some of our favorite series to turn to the dark side.

Characters and Story

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="B000E1NY26" text="" url="" ]

Akira’s relationship with his friend Ryo Asuka changes over time from close friendship to bitter rivalry and betrayal. But throughout all of this, there’s a sense of forgiveness and even love between the two that keeps them together at their very core. It may seem like a common trope now, but this complicated feud was revolutionary at the time and went on to inspire some of anime’s greatest duos. The most obvious counterparts to Akira and Ryo are Guts and Griffith from Berserk. Both Devilman and its spiritual successor Violence Jack were heavy influences on the entire manga, but it’s easiest to see in the dynamic between the gruff, evil-looking hero who suffers and his angelic, feminine friend who betrays him. For another variation on this relationship, take a look at Madoka and Homura from Puella Magi Madoka Magica. Parasyte, another classic manga that only recently got a full adaptation, took story inspiration from how the demons in Devilman seamlessly integrated into human society without anyone noticing. By changing the demons into morally ambiguous aliens who depend on humans for survival, author Hitoshi Iwaaki was able to explore how two wildly different species could co-exist with one another.

Visual Style

Perhaps the most iconic image from the entire Devilman mythos is Devilman’s ferocious head, with its leathery bat wings and glowing eyes. Morrigan from Darkstalkers clearly takes inspiration from Akira’s counterpart Jun from Devilman Lady, and Mega Man creator Keiji Inafune has stated that Zero’s helmet is a deliberate reference to Go Nagai’s work. The design of the demon Sirene, with a set of white bird wings adorning her head, has also influenced the likes of Ragyo Kiryuin from Kill la Kill and Zephyrmon from Digimon Frontier. On a more broad scale, the destruction of the world as seen in the manga’s ending has had its share of homages. The Eclipse from Berserk bears a striking resemblance to the carnage and senseless betrayal found in Akira’s war against Satan, and the End of Evangelion uses similar Christian imagery and psychedelic visuals to portray a lone pair of humans left on an utterly destroyed planet. Hideaki Anno has even said that he wanted Neon Genesis Evangelion to have an ending similar to Devilman, which he finally was able to create once the movie was released.

Old Tropes in New Contexts

Devilman: Crybaby, the most recent adaptation of the manga, is thoroughly steeped in the modern era of smartphones and social media. If Crybaby was your introduction to the Devilman franchise, it may be hard to believe that its source material dates back to the early ‘70s. But the changes made to this otherwise very faithful adaptation serve two different purposes – to make the story more relatable to a 2010s audience, and to prevent itself from seeming retrospectively clichéd. Even though Devilman was the first to popularize the Akira/Ryo-style relationship of friends to enemies to lovers (maybe), today’s anime fans would be bored with something that they’ve already seen in Berserk and Madoka. The hellish demonic war would seem like an End of Evangelion retread, and so on and so on. By updating the setting and making a few tweaks to the characters (like toning down Ryo’s yandere behavior and incorporating the time loop plot point from one of the spin-offs), the showrunners were able to create a complete adaptation of Devilman that could also stand on its own as a modern anime.

Final Thoughts

[sourceLink asin="B004S3PLIQ" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]

If you keep your eyes open, you can find Devilman references everywhere. Even My Hero Academia features a quick silhouette of Devilman amongst other iconic heroes during its initial explanation of quirks. And with Crybaby’s positive reception amongst anime fans, hopefully we’ll get to see even more of Nagai’s magnum opus in the future. Where else can you find shows influenced by or referencing Devilman? What would you like to see more of in the future of the franchise? Let us know in the comments, and thanks so much for reading!
