Ask gamers of the current era what Donkey Kong looked like originally or have they ever played Galaga and they probably will scratch their heads in confusion. So-called retro games should have died out with gaming titles like Nier Automata and The Last of Us being released, but instead, something interesting occurred. Retro games have […]

Top 10 Darling in the FRANXX Characters that Matured the Most [Best List]

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="crunchyroll" url="http://www.crunchyroll.com/darling-in-the-franxx/episode-15-jian-769599" ]

We all know that growing up can be hard. The pressure put on us by parents and teachers as well as the expectations placed on us by society can feel overwhelming. We sometimes felt confused by how the adults viewed us along with their conflicting expectations. You would be told to be more mature but also constantly told “you’re too young,” making growing up even more difficult. We now take all that confusion, angst, and growing pain and supplant (or transplant) it into a dystopian future. The children are cared for in a peaceful garden and give daily thanks to Papa, the absolute ruler of humanity. The children have their ignorance of the world nurtured in order to ensure their compliance. Adults need them to keep their childlike minds and biology because they are crucial to using a technology the adults can’t. But all the while the children are being asked to do the most adult things: fight, kill, and die as the pilots of robotic soldiers called FRANXX.

[ad_top2 class="mt40 mb40"]

10. Zorome

Zorome is a Franxx pilot with the code name 666. The code name fits him well considering the abrasive boy is easy to offend and constantly criticizes others, including his co-pilot Miku. He completely idolizes the adults and consistently seeks Papa’s approval. The idea of growing up to be an adult is his entire goal in life. Zorome seems slow on the uptake, not realizing that the adults do not necessarily return his loyalty. The children and most of humanity are eventually betrayed by Papa and Zorome's world is shattered. It takes some time for his psyche to recover, but when it does his animus that was reserved for those who challenged Papa was now directed toward Papa. A big moment in life is when those we idolize fall from grace and we have to reshape our beliefs because of it. Zorome matured slowest out of the others because of his wholehearted acceptance of the status quo. He does, in the end, become a teacher for the next generation but we never get a complete view of him as a grownup or see that his relationship with Miku or the others really changed.

9.Goro

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="crunchyroll" url="http://www.crunchyroll.com/darling-in-the-franxx/episode-9-triangle-bomb-759591" ]

Goro, or Code 56, is tall, handsome and calm. At first glance, you'd assume he was the leader of the group, yet that role falls to his partner, Ichigo. He does have a lot of leadership qualities, though. He is willing to sacrifice himself for his friends and attempts to do so in episode 9. He also slowly develops feelings for Ichigo but understands that her heart belongs to Hiro. Goro’s big moment of maturity comes after he chastises and punches Hiro for wanting to run off to space and save Zero Two. Goro later realizes he was being a hypocrite for criticizing Hiro. Goro was most concerned about how Hiro being gone would affect him. He also saw that Hiro was willing to chase after what he loves most. Goro realized that Hiro was braver than he ever was because he was still unable to tell Ichigo his true feelings. The introspection it takes to admit you’re being selfish is truly a moment of maturity.

8.Miku

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="crunchyroll" url="http://www.crunchyroll.com/darling-in-the-franxx/episode-8-boys-x-girls-759589" ]

Miku, or code 390, is a classic anime character template: the twin-tailed tsundere. She is paired with the other tsun of the bunch, Zorome. She is also the girliest of the group. She attempts to act aloof and adult but is quick to react when provoked. Miku could also be described as opinionated and unapologetic. She isn’t one for backing down. She also seems to have more of a brother/sister relationship with her partner than a romantic one. She, despite her youthful appearance, is one of the first of the characters to show a sign of actual aging. Miku begins sprouting gray hairs as early as episode 16 and by episode 24, as one of the new adults, she pulls the bands from her twin tails and lets her hair fall down her back. In the process, she lets go of her childhood making that the most visible aspect of her maturity.

7.Nana

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="crunchyroll" url="http://www.crunchyroll.com/darling-in-the-franxx/episode-1-alone-and-lonesome-759575" ]

Nana, as her name alludes, was the nanny-like manager of the children in Squad 13, the group of Franxx pilots that make up our main cast of characters. She is also one of the first adults we meet in the world of Darling in the Franxx. Nana, like almost all of the adults, is very reserved and almost emotionless. She demonstrates this when she says she is willing to leave one of the children behind when the plantation they are defending is in jeopardy. We are led to believe later in the series that she had most of her emotions conditioned out of her in a re-education facility. When Kokoro becomes pregnant, the shock of how that conflicts with Nana’s programming causes her to revert to puberty, at least mentally. The idea of showing emotion and feeling actual love is considered something that is less evolved. Nana’s moment of maturity is actually in this regression. She regresses once, is reconditioned, and then regresses a second time. The second regression breaks her conditioning, leaving her – for lack of a better term – human. Her ability to realize the rules of the world as she knew them were lies is probably one of the greatest achievements of a character in the show becoming a clear moment of maturity.

6.Zero Two

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="crunchyroll" url="http://www.crunchyroll.com/darling-in-the-franxx/episode-7-shooting-star-moratorium-759587" ]

Zero Two is the main heroine of the cast. She is a klaxo-sapien hybrid and a skilled Franxx pilot. She is the disrupter. The Franxx pilots in Squad 13 all do their duty by living, fighting, and dying without really asking any questions until Zero Two shows up. She is also impulsive and arrogant, yet has a childlike innocence about her. Hiro (who was already a little bit of an anomaly on the obedience scale with his willingness to question things like their mission and Papa and the other adults' motives) is quickly influenced by Zero Two. She refers to Hiro as “my darling.” She loves him but acts selfishly and quickly becomes jealous when she realizes Ichigo has feelings for him. In many ways she was both the most mature in the beginning and yet not. She begins to mature when she realizes that she needs to take more into consideration than her own feelings and her connection to Hiro. Her journey takes her from self-centered, too possessive, constantly bucking the system to keep Hiro with her, to taking on a lonely painful burden battling a new enemy so Hiro and the others can try to remake the world. Zero Two matures constantly over the course of the series just as the main heroine should.

[ad_middle]

5.Futoshi

Futoshi is a big boy with a big heart and pilots a Franxx. You could describe him as the optimist of the bunch who is always trying to find the bright side of a situation. He constantly wants to make his squadmates feel better. He is devoted to his friends and was completely committed to his partner, Kokoro. He may not have understood the word love but he was in love with her. He is heartbroken when she breaks off their partnership in order to partner up with Mitsuru. He cries and throws a tantrum like a child, not sure how to handle the complex emotions he was feeling. He eventually comes to term with it in his best show of maturity. Futoshi quickly forgives Kokoro but takes longer to forgive Mitsuru. He eventually decides to embrace the love Mitsuru and Kokoro have for each other and support their relationship, understanding that loving Kokoro is wanting her to be happy -- with or without him. Futoshi even demands to be the priest when Kokoro and Mitsuru get married, conducting a ceremony that they had only ever heard of in banned books. Futoshi in many ways matures in the most relatable way for the outside audience by understanding true love is unconditional love.

4.Hiro

Since a young age, Hiro has been different than most of the children. Hiro was the one that gave most of the children names, a practice not necessarily done by the adults who only referred to the children by their code numbers. As a child he was naturally curious and wanted to explore the outside world. Hiro and Zero Two meet when they were very young children as they attempted to run away. He wasn’t at all disturbed or afraid of Zero Two’s otherworldly appearance with her dark red skin and horns. She could barely speak yet he found a connection with her. Despite being reconditioned after being captured the two never truly forgot their encounter. They’re immediately drawn together when they meet for the second time. Hiro’s moment of maturity comes when he realizes that he actually has to make a real sacrifice so the others, the rest of humanity, can live on. He realizes that Zero Two and himself will be cheated out of the life together that they desperately wanted. He knows the only way to ensure that humanity and their friends live on is by sacrificing themselves in the process. The two of them don’t meet their end with anger but with hope and determination that one day they would meet again and get the life together they earned.

3. Mitsuru

At first glance, Mitsuru makes you think he is a clean cut, by-the-books guy. He may have been this way in order to compete with his best friend, Hiro, who was a standout student in every metric. Hiro promised Mitsuru that they would pilot together one day. Mitsuru even risked his life taking an injection that would increase his ability to pilot a Franxx when he got older just to be able to stand by Hiro. Hiro forgot all about his promise to pilot with Mitsuru due to reconditioning. Mitsuru became resentful of Hiro, thinking he just forgot. As a result, Mitsuru becomes fiercely independent because he never wants to rely on others. He has no use for his comrades other than their official duties and has even less interest in his partner, Ikuno. He begins to change, as most men do, upon getting to know a girl: Kokoro. The two begin getting to know each other in the greenhouse as he reads and she tends to the plants. The two fall in love, even though they aren't sure what love means, and even get pregnant and decide to marry. His moment of maturity comes as he slowly erodes through the conditioning that wiped their relationship from his mind and takes on the responsibility of being a father. Kokoro never made him feel like he was obligated to be a father, he just knew he was and felt the need to be.

2.Ikuno

Ikuno is one of the Franxx pilots and was paired with Mitsuru until he left her for Kokoro and she partnered with Futoshi. She has a calm and put-together personality, attempting to maintain control of her emotions at all times. We first feel that something is different about her when Zero Two licks her -- as Zero Two is known to do from time to time -- and says that Ikuno “tastes like a secret.” She has absolutely no chemistry with her partner Mitsuru and seems to barely tolerate him or the other boys. She obviously shows a fondness for Ichigo, their female squad leader. She frustrated by the fact that Ichigo is in love with Hiro despite that Hiro essentially ignores Ichigo because he is in love with Zero Two. Ikuno confesses to Ichigo and kisses her. She tells Ichigo that she hates the boy-girl system of pilot/copilot in the Franxx. She confesses to loving her and that she has loved her since they were small children. She fights with self-doubt, wondering if she is creepy for being jealous of the boys who get to partner with her just because they are boys. She’s confused by the feeling of wanting Ichigo all to herself. We cite this confession as her maturity moment. The bravery it took for Ikuno to come out in a society that sends you off for reconditioning if you deviate too much from the norm is admirable. Her ability to not only accept herself and enter into a relationship with another girl in the future shows a maturity that we all hope we have.

1.Kokoro

Kokoro is the warm and nurturing kind of person that likes to see things grow. She is always there to care for people and ferociously defend those she loves. Kokoro is also one of the more thoughtful members of her squad, preferring to sit back and watch the more energetic members of the group. She is careful about what she says and often holds back her true feelings. She also has some very good moments of introspection. She tells Mitsuru that she is a liar, admitting that she isn’t the sweet, innocent, nice girl that they all think she is. She finds a book on childbirth in a ruin and is captivated by it despite society saying they had “evolved past the point of something like that.” She questions why the human race stopped having babies the natural way. Kokoro, wanting to have a baby, convinces Mitsuru to impregnate her as a natural part of their relationship. The two even marry, and even though the ceremony is broken up by the adults and they are both re-conditioned to forget about their relationship she remains pregnant. Kokoro’s ability to be introspective is the key to her maturity. She is able to identify her faults and accept them. Kokoro is also making the most obvious leap of maturity in the Franxx universe by becoming the first mother in centuries. She is driven by a primal urge to create life as well as rekindle her bonds with Mitsuru even if they had forgotten their past together.

Final Thoughts

We all strive, even as adults, to be more mature in our lives. We especially strive for that maturity as children. The way we play house, go on adventures and imagine our worlds as children are all part of the innate need to grow up. The characters in Darling in the Franxx have that same need to mature and each tackles problems in their own way. We who have been through this thing called growing up know it’s hard -- and some of us still struggle with being an adult in our 40s. Yet, we know we can’t stay children behind a walled garden forever; we will have to face the monsters on the outside eventually.

A Lolicon & Damaged Goods

Nagareboshi
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="NEOBK-1859031" text="" url="" ]

Well damn! While Happy Sugar Life was a front runner this summer before it aired, it seems that the enthusiasm for it has really cooled down. Still though, the story is good. In the most recept episode we see the raped boy from episode 1, Taiyou, return and this time he’s working with Satou at her new job. Terrified of older women, understandably, he is scared of his new boss. Satou helps him and then leaves the room. Afterwards, we learn that his new love is shio. SOMEHOW, because anime characters are idiots, Shio gets out, clearly she has been drugged or something as we have no idea why Shio can’t remember anything, Shio meets Taiyou after he meets the other hooded boy, who is clearly Shio’s brother, and is looking for her. This is a mess. Shio is helping Taiyou feel better, but it’s not his tears, but his mouth watering in desire over wanting to have sex with Shio. We don7t get why Taiyou cannot put 2 and 2 together to figure out that he knows Satou, but the episode ends with him leading Shio away to let her stay with him while he looks for Shio. Our money is on Taiyou dying in the next episode. Either that, or Satou will drug Shio, take her back, and THEN kill Taiyou. The weird teacher is now on Satou’s side helping her dispose of bodies and it’s just a matter of time until she snaps. Either way, her sweet moments are cute, but the bitter ones are a stark contrast. Either way, Happy Sugar Life is going to get darker and more violent as we go.

Happiness Strap

Jenangelx3
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="Crunchyroll" url="http://www.crunchyroll.com/holmes-of-kyoto" ]

In Kyoto Teramachi Sanjou no Holmes this week, they introduced the notion of a Happiness Strap on the train in Kyoto. This made Aoi a bit solemn as she thinks about her current state and her troubles. While I suppose this is logical, especially for a teenager whose boyfriend cheated on her with her best friend (not explicitly stated but come on, you do the math). Anyway, I can understand how upset Aoi must be, but the inclusion of the Happiness Strap seems a bit odd, not that I have ever used a train to travel around Kyoto so its existence may or may not be real most tourists use the bus anyway). It feels like the Happiness Strap is used just to remind us, rather terribly, that Aoi has her own drama going on, even though it’s really not explored any more than it is in episode 1. When they showed Aoi getting sad, I will admit that I had no idea what was going on at first. Also, I wonder why you would just have a train strap be some sort of lucky charm to bring you luck. It’s a bit odd. Why not go to one of the many Kyoto shrines for an actual charm? Do you think that holding a train strap would bring luck or do you think they just want to add a bit of superstition? Or maybe that was their weak way of mentioning that there’s drama?

2 Girls 1 Mum

Rod Locksley
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="Crunchyroll" url="http://www.crunchyroll.com/hanebado" ]

Even if it’s a Sports anime, there’s definitely some drama in Hanebado!... and even if there’s some drama in Hanebado!, you would’ve never expected its main character to become the best badminton player in order to claim her mother back. I mean, in the first episodes we noticed something odd in Ayano’s approach to playing badminton, but this? After losing to this beautiful yet mysterious and cocky blonde Connie, our sweet Ayano has some doubts not only about her skills but also about her past. For some reason, Connie knows Ayano’s mother —Uchika hanesaki, a legendary player herself— and uses this to mind break her opponent, but after the match is over she finally confess: ¡she’s also Uchika’s daughter! Well, sort of. After leaving Ayano, Uchika has raised this other girl and taught her everything about badminton, thus making her better than her own child. Oh, you gotta see poor Ayano’s look when every puzzle piece came into place, and obviously Connie was enjoying every second of it! I don’t think Uchika would like to see Ayano “fight” Connie not even if it means just a badminton court, but I can totally see where this is going. Are you up to some “winner gets to keep mum” kind of match?! To be fair, we yet have to see how things develop, but that would be cruelly cool for an anime. Yeah, you keep saying it’s just fanservice with great animation.

Et tu, Aishela?

Lizzy Nyanko
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="Crunchyroll" url="http://www.crunchyroll.com/record-of-grancrest-war" ]

After finding out that the Mage Academy is the dark force pulling the strings behind the ongoing war between kingdoms and lords, Lady Marrine’s fears are confirmed when a mage announces through their wands that the Mage Academy is purging all the mages who support the lords. And in a very Mission Impossible style, he tells all who are listening to destroy their wands, as they can be spied on and located that way. The Mage Academy and the Lords are officially at war and the academy is taking no prisoners. The birth of the Grancrest is officially a reality and the academy deems the new Emperor and the Lords a threat. The plan is now to unite the Treaty, Union, and Alliance and fight the Mage Academy in Eram. Theo and Siluca’s allies destroy their wands, pledging allegiance to their lords and assuring they are not being spied on, save a few who decide to stay true to the academy and are allowed to just walk away. (Not sure why they didn’t imprison them or something…). Siluca and her father have a sweet moment talking about how they are getting to work together and when Aishela walks into the tent, we find out that she and Siluca are sisters and Aishela is not a big fan of Aubeste. Aubeste, however, thanks Aishela for taking care of Siluca this whole time and calls them both his precious daughters. During this conversation, Aishela mutters that she is not a Meletes anymore… odd… Everyone goes to sleep, including Siluca, who passes out at her desk. Siluca is soon woken up by Aishela, who is asking her to come out. As soon as Siluca steps out… holy crap! An expressionless Aishela takes a literal stab at her chest! WTF!? Oh no! Are we losing our main heroine!? No. Luckily, Irvin stops Aishela right on time and she admits to attempting to murder Siluca and that Theo was her next target. Theo wakes up and they bring Aishela inside, where they strap her down after she admits to being sent by a secret agency from the academy. What a twist! The academy has been watching Siluca all along and it turns out Aishela “tried” to kill her because otherwise, if she didn’t, the academy had placed a spell on her that would kill her. She still loves her sister and did a poor job on purpose. However, the spell or “geas” they placed on Aishela’s chest is activated and is seemingly being murdered through it by the academy’s secret organization. But just as the moment is getting intense and emotional and we think Aishela’s a goner, the sweet Priscilla says “She’s not destined to die here” and pulls out her Holy Grail Crest to free Aishela from the magical shackles of the academy. I knew that girl would come in handy! It was a very exciting episode full of surprises and twists! We didn’t lose any of our favorite girls and things are heating up by the minute! What’s happening next!?

Three Episode Impression

[ua_synopsis text="Who’s ready for hot bishounen with all the right muscles in swimsuits? Oh yes, it’s finally time for Season 3 of Free! and how could you miss it? Following the previous seasons, there’s going to be plenty of personal conflict, a bit of drama, and a lot of swimming. Of course, Haruka is involved as well. Now, the group is older and have moved onto bigger things, but Haruka is still swimming freestyle. This time we get to see how his relationship with Ikuya plays out and oh boy, it’s been an interesting season so far. With lots of swimming and a lot of boys in swimwear, we are getting a lot that we love from the previous seasons and movies! Our favorite part is being able to see everyone else and their stories even though they may not be swimming with Haruka anymore."]

[en]Characters & Voice Actors List[/en][es]Personajes & Seiyuus[/es]

[ua_character name="Haruka Nanase" voice="Nobunaga Shimazaki" desc="Haruka discovered that he had a special affinity for water and swimming when he was a child. Then when he was in high school, he was surrounded by Makoto, Rin, and his other friends, and after coming into contact with them, he decided to keep swimming and aim for the world championships. In April, he moved on to college and there, he is further spurred on to practice by players from all over the country who have gathered. While he is expanding his relationships with others through swimming in this new place, he unexpectedly reconnects with an old acquaintance." img='']
[ua_character name="Makoto Tachibana" voice="Tatsuo Suzuki" desc="Makoto is Haru’s childhood friend and best friend. When they were young, he saw Haruka’s potential and invited him to join the swimming club together. They have a relationship where even if words are not exchanged, they are able to understand each other. Up until now, Makoto has been the type of person to frequently look out for those around him, but now that he is in college, he is studying how to work towards a goal he has found for himself. He is looking to be involved with swimming in a different way compared to Haruka and the others." img='']
[ua_character name="Rin Matsuoka" voice="Mamoru Miyano" desc="Rin tried his hand at studying abroad for swimming in Australia when he was a child. But when he was in high school, he swam in a race against Haruka and others and rediscovered his love of swimming. Rin and Haruka mutually acknowledge each other and are rivals that trust one another. After graduating, Rin moved back to Australia and continue to practice swimming in order to make his dream come true of standing on the national stage. He is a member of a swimming team where players from all over the world have gathered, and it is there that he has a stimulating encounter." img='']
[ua_character name="Ikuya Kirishima" voice="Kouki Uchiyama" desc="Ikuya was a member of the relay team at Iwatobi middle school where Haruka, Makoto, and Asahi all attended. He’s rather inexpressive and this has caused issues around him, but after swimming in the relay race with Haruka and others, he realized how important friends are. In the spring of his second year in middle school, he went to study swimming abroad with his older brother and temporarily left Japan. After coming back though, Ikuya participated in an individual medley and his freestyle resembles that of Haruka’s." img='']
[ua_character name="Asahi Shiina" voice="Toshiyuki Toyonaga" desc="When Asahi was young, he was moving all over the country due to family circumstances and met Haruka when he was a first-year middle school student. He swam freestyle with Haruka. Asahi hates to lose and swears that he is going to beat Haruka in freestyle swimming one day. He always has a cheerfulness about him always building a team no matter where is his, and for that reason, no matter where he goes, he treasures those he meets. He continues to swim after graduating high school and reconnects with his past friends in a chance encounter." img='']
[ua_character name="Hiyori Tono" voice="Ryouhei Kimura" desc="Hiyori is from Shionezaki High School where Ikuya is from and they both belonged to the swimming team there. There is just something about Ikuya that interests Hiyori and so the two are found together often. Hiyori is well-versed in swimming athlete information and it appears that he is quite interested in Haruka. After graduating high school, he continues swimming with Ikuya at the same university. He greets anyone and everyone with a gentle smile and is polite, but he very rarely reveals his true feelings." img='']
[ua_character name="Sousuke Yamazaki" voice="Yoshimasa Hosoya" desc="Sousuke has been Rin’s best friend since they were in elementary school and they both understand each other well. His swimming style of choice was the butterfly stroke, but he injured his shoulder. Ever since his final match in high school, he has walked away from swimming. After graduating high school, he helped out with his family’s business and would sometimes visit the Samezuka Academy swimming team. As a graduate, he was respected by the team there. Giving accurate and direct advice, his juniors began to rely on him." img='']
[ua_character name="Natsuya Kirishima" voice="Kenji Nojima" desc="Natsuya is Ikuya’s older brother. His stance towards swimming had a massive influence on Ikuya. When Haruka joined the Iwatobi Middle School’s swimming team, Natsuya was the current acting club president. He easily gets worked up over winning or losing meaning he has an emotional personality. Due to having competed in actual competitions overseas, he has real talent for swimming competitions. Even now, he keeps in contact with his best friend Nao." img='']

Satou Matsusaka has someone that she likes. Whenever she comes into contact with then, she is set into titillation. Surely, this has to be ‘Love’. That is what Satou thought. She will forgive anything if it is for the sake of protecting this feeling. Satou thinks it’s okay to deceive, commit crimes, rob, and even kill, to protect this feeling.

Three Episode Impression

[ua_synopsis text="With a name like Happy Sugar Life, what more can you expect but butterflies and rainbows? Well, we certainly were not expecting to meet Satou, a cute but rather demented individual who is so dead set on living a fluffy life with Shio that she would harm others. It’s rather unsettling, especially if you went into this anime completely blind the way we did. Oh my gosh, the dark themes explored so far have us unnerved, but I just have to know what will happen next. Every character has been harmed in some way and watching the damage manifest in their psyche is just thrilling. In Happy Sugar Life, it looks like everyone has something wrong with them and it’s a bit scary to see how everything unfolds, but I just can’t stop watching. Exactly what happened in the past and why is Satou the way she is? I just have to know! Rape, murder, mutilation, and kidnapping are just a few themes explored in Happy Sugar Life, and it’s only been a few episodes!"]

Haruka Oozora has moved from Tokyo to Okinawa. She may be cheerful and positive all of the time, but she actually has a certain complex - her tall height. Then there’s Kanata Higa, Haruka’s cousin of the same age, who came to meet her at the airport. She’s worried about the fact that she had to quit her beloved beach volleyball due to her short height. This mismatched pair end up forming a beach volleyball team… On the wide, sandy court, you have only one ally. What kind of play will these two show us in beach volleyball, where your partner is more important than anything?

Three Episode Impression

[ua_synopsis text="Fan service, bathing suits, and some possible girl x girl relationships? Well, if you want it all, you’ve got it in Harukana Receive, which is a sports anime revolving around the sport of beach volleyball. Need we say more? Yes, there’s a good amount of fanservice, but it’s not as blatant as anime like Keijo!! All the same though, it’s there, but the plot is so much better with lots of girl drama in the background. At first, we thought the anime revolved around Narumi, but in fact, it’s more about Kanata and how she reconciles herself with her past and her love of beach volleyball. Most of the episodes revolve around Kanata addressing each problem she had in the past while Narumi slowly learns how to play beach volleyball. You’d think this would play out like a lot of shounen anime that show one character taking it all, but it’s more like a self improvement story of a girl who lost all confidence in herself before and slowly gets it back. It’s similar to Kuroko no Basuke or Free! when it comes down to melodrama, but it isn’t suffocating the series in anyway. Who doesn’t want to learn more about what is going on in Kanata’s life? Plus, with the references to Okinawan culture is a breath of fresh air from all the Tokyo centric anime. So far, I’m enjoying Harukana Receive and cannot wait for the next episode!"]

[ua_character name="Haruka Oozora" voice="Kana Yuuki" desc="Haruka has just moved from Tokyo to Okinawa and is a second-year high school student. She has a cheerful and bright personality. She’s much taller than girls her age so she’s constantly worried about finding shoes that fit her as well as clothes that suit her. She’s great at sports, but she’s a total newbie when it comes to beach volleyball." img='']
[ua_character name="Kanata Higa" voice="Saki Miyashita" desc="Kanata is Haruka’s cousin who lives in Okinawa and is also a second-year student like Haruka. She used to play beach volleyball, but since she didn’t grow taller like she thought she would, she gave up. She has a quiet, introverted personality. She was dragged into it by Haruka, so she will restart playing beach volleyball with Haruka." img='']
[ua_character name="Claire Thomas" voice="Atsumi Tanezaki" desc="Claire is also a second-year student like Haruka and Kanata. Both her and her twin sister Emily have always got excellent grades, and now, the two as a pair also currently hold the 2nd highest scores across all of Japan. Claire doesn’t sweat the small stuff and has a bit of a sloppy personality. Thus, she immediately found a kindred spirit in Haruka whose personality is similar to hers." img='']
[ua_character name="Emily Thomas" voice="Rie Suegara" desc="Emily is also another second-year high school student like Haruka and the others. She has a serious, quiet personality and is always quarreling with her older twin sister, Claire. As well as putting her all into beach volleyball training after school, she is also a member of the student council. She has always looked after the relationship between Kanata and Narumi as a friend." img='']
[ua_character name="Narumi Tooi" voice="Miyuri Shimaburuko" desc="Narumi is a second-year high school student at Fukuchiyama Academy. She was formerly paired up with Kanata, but after Kanata’s setbacks, the pair gradually came to a natural end. Currently, she is paired up with Ayasa and they are the current high school champions. Due to the sequence of events in the past, there is still some ill feelings between Katana and Narumi." img='']
[ua_character name="Ayasa Tachibana" voice="Kanae Itou" desc="Ayasa is also a second-year student at Fukuchiyama Academy and Narumi’s current partner. When she was visiting a beach for practice, she was invited by Haruka to play, and that was what originally got her into beach volleyball. With her bright and open personality, even those who are meeting Ayasa for the first time find her easy to talk to." img='']
[ua_character name="Akari Ooshiro" voice="Chisaki Kimura" desc="Akari is a first-year student at Haruka’s high school. She’s in showbiz, so because of that, she’s out of place with those around her and is isolated in school. After being challenged to a beach volleyball match with Kanata, she joined the beach volleyball club. She’s trying to also get the hang of being a manager as well." img='']

The story is about Aki Shiina who wants to be manlier. When he enters middle school, he uses it as an opportunity to move to Tokyo and move into Sunohara Manor, a dormitory for students. What is waiting for him is a manager who is rather big in many ways, Akaya Sunohara, and three girls who will become his seniors.

[ua_synopsis text="Oppai, shotas, and harems, oh my! Welcome to Sunohara-sou no Kanrinin-san, which follows a shota who is sick of being treated like a girl. In fact, Aki is so sick of it that he moves to a new city in hopes of achieving recognition as a man. Fortunately for him, he’s been accepted at an all girl dorm because the dorm head mistook him for a girl and she’s absolutely smitten by him. Well, if that doesn’t scream fan service, I don’t know what will, but Sunohara-sou no Kanrinin-san is full of it so be prepared for all the oppai and groping! And of course, miscommunications! It’s alright if Aki is a shota, right? That being said, Aki has to deal with his own fair share of sexual harassment from the girls. This anime is shamelessly full of fanservice, but it’s still enjoyable as a slice of life with the cute animation and easy going slice of life story. It’s nice to sometimes just watch an anime that doesn’t warrant all of your attention to every detail, you know?"]

A brother sister pair named Okou and Seiji manage a rental shop known as Izumiya in Nakamachi, Fukugawa Ward, Edo. A rental shop in that era is something that deals with renting anything and everything from daily necessities to antiques and even works of art to customers. However, something is just slightly different when it comes to the merchandise peddled by Izumiya compared to other stores. The difference is that they times that they lend out are known as ‘Tsukumogami.’ These are items that were made more than 100 years ago and have had a type of spirit come to reside in them making them sentient. The tsukumogami that are rented out to customers listen to various conversations and then spread it around as gossip. Goodhearted Okou and Seiji borrow the powers of the tsukumogami in order to resolve all sorts of quarrels, both big and small, within their town. This bittersweet real-life story of blossoming tsukumogami is interwoven with the humans of the town in Edo. Enjoy this story as it carefully reaches all the way to your core.

Three Episode Impression

[ua_synopsis text="Who else can appreciate an Edo-ccentric anime like Tsukumogami Kashimasu? This anime has been pretty OK so far with the first 3 episodes playing out the stories of 3 different individuals. While 3 humans may have brought their business to Izumoya, the stories are in fact about the tsukumogami at Izumoya more than their patrons. Them and of course the two siblings, Okou and Seiji. It’s interesting to see how these personifications of objects feel about their current predicaments in a rental shop, and how their past may have affected their current sense of selves at the moment. Then they have such a curiosity about Okou and Seiji but neither group directly interacts with the other, despite how aware they are of each other. It’s a tad strange. There’s also a strange story in the background about Okou and a lost love interest, and Seiji’s own feelings for Okou. I’m not a huge fan of the non-blood related incestuous story nor the rather shallow story Okou has going for her, but the anime is OK at the moment and I’ll proceed with watching it to see how it turns out. Is it as amazing as I originally thought? Hm, no, but it’s not something so bad that I’d drop it right now."]

“Tsurune” The sound the bowstring makes when an arrow is fired. For an archer, hearing the beautiful sound of reverberations is joyful, and the beauty of their sound is said to seize the heart and not let go. It is truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity as even if the same person uses the exact same bow and arrow, there is no guarantee that they can make the sound again. Each shot is a single meeting and a single farewell. For Minato Narumiya, all tsurune are meetings. These fresh, first-year high school students treading onto the unending path of archery are like the Battleship Wakaba setting out to sea for the first time. Through archery, these boys will, for the first time, gain irreplaceable experience and friends. This shining youth archery animation, akin to the sunlight peeking through the trees, starts now!

Top 10 Samurai Anime [Updated Best Recommendations]

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="B072MQC22F" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]

You’ll have a hard time finding more badass sword-wielding warriors than samurai. The depictions of samurai tend to vary: they can be lone swordsmen wandering the lands, members of an organization upholding the law, saints, or even bandits. Of course, when you decide to depict them in anime, then the possibilities multiply endlessly. We’ve seen it all: samurai mechas, samurai fighting like they’re hip-hop dancers, and even time-traveling samurai! With these near endlessly varied depictions of samurai, we had a lot of fun narrowing down the contenders for the Top 10 Samurai Anime.

[ad_top2 class="mt40 mb40"]

10. Yoroiden Samurai Troopers (Ronin Warriors)

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="B00UKO5EES" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 39 " aired=" April 1988 – March 1989 " post_id=""]

There are nine legendary suits which, when gathered, make up the armor of the evil emperor Talpa. He has obtained four of these armors and is seeking to gather the other five so he can renew his attempts to conquer Earth after he failed thousands of years ago. The other five are worn by five of Earth’s bravest humans, but when Talpa scatters them across the earth, it’s up to a young boy named Yuli and a student-teacher named Mia to reunite them and stop Talpa’s invasion. Ronin Warriors is a classic anime that takes the aesthetic of samurai and does something new with it. This series takes extreme pleasure in giving its nine armor-wearing characters particularly great poses to highlight their one-of-a-kind samurai armor. This is especially true of the protagonist Ryo’s Inferno Armor which is basically a samurai armor in mech form, or alternatively, Talpa’s armor which screams evil samurai emperor. Ultimately, Ronin Warriors is a classic shonen about five warriors who live up to the standards of an idealized samurai to overcome great evil, and it’s always a comforting watch.

9. Onihei

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="MNPS-122" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 13 " aired=" January 2017 – April 2017 " post_id=""]

Heizou Hasegawa is the Chief Officer of the Arson Theft Division. It’s the Edo period and peace reigns thanks to the rule of the Tokugawa shogunate. Even so, there are always people intent on disrupting the peace for their own selfish needs. The man known as Demon Heizou isn’t one to allow crimes to go unpunished. Investigating incidents, taking in criminals, and helping the misguided to repent, Heizou is determined to uphold the law and order granted in Japan during the Edo period. If you want to enjoy a show about the everyday life of a samurai in Japan when they weren’t busy waging war, then Onihei will satisfy your needs. It’s basically a police procedural with samurai that reflects on its own society and general musings on life. Heizou doesn’t see the world as black as white and is a widely compelling character both to see his views on his society and the human condition and to see how he interacts with the other well-developed characters he encounters and analyzes. Onihei is about as straightforward a samurai show as you can get, and you’re missing out if you haven’t checked this well-written series out.

8. Mushibugyou (Mushibugyo)

[sourceLink asin="B00CNKO2NG" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 26 " aired=" April 2013 – September 2013 " post_id=""]

During the Edo period, there is one group of people capable of saving the people of Japan from invading giant insects: the Insect Magistrate Office. Composed of the finest warriors in Japan, it’s the responsibility of the warriors of the IMO to exterminate the monstrous bugs that plague their land. Jinbee Tsukishima is an aspiring swordsman who joins the Insect Magistrate Office after an accident prevents his father from doing the same and he hopes to play a part in the extermination of insects from Japan. Mushibugyo props up a ragtag group of samurai, ninja, and priests against giant insects and it’s a complete load of fun. Aside from the general idea of giant bugs being outright disgusting, it’s hard not to enjoy the awesomeness of samurai going head to head with what basically amounts to kaiju. The characters and action carry the outlandish but straightforward plot, and ultimately it lives up to the samurai spirit of protecting Japan against invading forces even if, in this case, they are giant bugs.

7. Peace Maker Kurogane

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="crunchyroll" url="http://www.crunchyroll.com/peacemaker" ]
[Information episodes=" 24 " aired=" October 2003 – March 2004 " post_id=""]

Tetsunosuke and Tatsunosuke Ichimura’s parents were murdered by Chosu rebels, a pro-imperial group. While Tetsunosuke is determined to avenge his parents, his older brother is content to live a life free of violence. All that said, Tatsunosuke happens to become the accountant for the Shinsengumi, the legendary samurai group Tetsunosuke happens to want to join to achieve his vengeance. Tetsunosuke ends up joining the Shinsengumi as a page but will quickly discover the price of being a member of the group. The most famous samurai are undoubtedly the Shinsengumi, a group of samurai tasked with preventing revolutionaries seeking to re-establish the emperor as the true seat of power in Japan. Peace Maker Kurogane depicts all the popular historical members of the Shinsengumi and is truthful to the grey-morality of the conflict between the revolutionaries and those seeking to uphold the shogunate. The main attraction is the development of Tetsunosuke, who matures from a bratty and loud 15-year-old into one of the finest swordsmen in Japan.

6. Juubee Ninpuuchou (Ninja Scroll)

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="VTXF-20" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 1 " aired=" June 1993 " post_id=""]

Jubei Kibagami is a samurai disenchanted with the politics of feudal Japan. He’s a swordsman-for-hire but finds himself embroiled in the political webs of his country once again when he saves Kagero, last ninja of their clan, from a man with skin-hardening powers. He’s blackmailed with an antidote into helping Kagero figure out the connection between a village-killing plague and the skin-hardening man after he’s poisoned by a government spy. Jubei will find himself pulled in deeper into the political web with every discovery he makes. It’s hard not to enjoy seeing Jubei, a lone samurai, being a one-man army against a faction of superpowered ninja. That isn’t to discredit Kagero, the poison-testing ninja he teams up with, or Dakuan, the old and clever government spy who helps Jubei out in key moments and even save him from grizzly fates on more than one occasion. Ninja Scroll is a grim tale combining violence, sex, and tragedy to make for a thrilling story.

5. Donten ni Warau (Laughing Under the Clouds)

[sourceLink asin="B01FXLSWAA" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" October 2014 – December 2014 " post_id=""]

It’s the Meiji period and the emperor has been restored. As a result, swords are now being banned from Japan and that’s the final nail in the era of samurai, at least for those who don’t rebel. A combination of rebelling samurai, rising crime because of the lack of samurai to enforce the law, and prisons overflowing with those criminals who are caught has made the early part of the Meiji period rather tumultuous. A giant prison is built to accommodate the many criminals and three brothers called Tenka, Soramaru, and Chutaro have the responsibility of ferrying them across the lake and into the prison. There’s more to the job than they expect, the prison is situated where a legendary creature is said to appear every 300 years, and many factions want their hands on it. Laughing Under the Clouds is set during the downfall of the samurai, but don’t let that fool you, there’s plenty of sword-wielding samurai in this one. The best part of Laughing Under the Clouds is the family dynamic between the three brothers; Tenka, the eldest, feels like he has a responsibility to protect his younger brothers, Soramaru is desperate to catch up to Tenka in skills, and Chutaro outright idolizes his eldest brother. They may be the main focus of the show, but Laughing Under the Clouds also has many other family dynamics in play that make for a show full of interesting relationships.

4. Afro Samurai

[sourceLink asin="B000LP5FWC" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 5 " aired=" January 2007 – February 2007 " post_id=""]

Afro Samurai’s father was the number one samurai in the world until he was killed by the only man capable of challenging him, the number two samurai Justice. Years later, he has obtained the status of the only man capable of challenging Justice, he is now the number two samurai. Of course, while he wants to get his redemption as soon as possible, he now must contend with the fact that every other samurai can challenge the number two and will be desperate to take that mantle for themselves. Juggling overcoming every other samurai while pursuing Justice will push Afro Samurai as far as he can go. Surprisingly, Afro Samurai isn’t the only anime to have thought of combining samurai with hip-hop culture, but it seems to be a match made in heaven because it produced another tremendous series. This short series is particularly delightful if you watch it in English thanks to Samuel L. Jackson lending his voice to the titular Afro. It’s a straightforward revenge tale, but stick around for the hip-hop aesthetic and the great fights.

3. Basilisk: Kouga Ninpou Chou (Basilisk)

[sourceLink asin="B001DN0URQ" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 24 " aired=" April 2005 – September 2005 " post_id=""]

The two legendary ninja clans Iga and Kouga have finally entered an era of peace thanks to the order of the Shogun Ieyasu Tokugawa. This temporary peace has an opportunity to become permanent when the heirs to the respective clans fall in love and plan on marrying. Unfortunately, a conflict with the successor of the title of shogun causes Ieyasu Tokugawa to engage the Iga and Kouga clan in a battle royale with each clan representing one of their heirs. The clans will pick 10 of their best warriors to compete, and the winning clan will gain the favor of the winning shogunate. The heirs of the clans, Gennosuke Kouga and Oboro Iga, will have the challenging decision to decide between clan loyalty and personal love. Basilisk puts a new spin on the classic rivalry between the two legendary ninja clans Iga and Kouga, with a Shakespearean star-crossed lovers tale under the narrative push of a battle royal. The stakes are high from the very first episode combining a tragic love story with the thrilling fast-paced action of the last man standing tale. You aren’t likely to find a lot of anime that will mix these two elements and somehow excel at both, and part of that might just be because you’ll quickly find all the characters embroiled in this conflict extremely compelling.

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="B00HM4THZ6" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 26 " aired=" April 2004 – September 2004 " post_id=""]

The Mutsu family is legendary for practicing a unique unarmed martial art called the Mutsu Enmei-Ryu. Throughout history, the Mutsu family has been involved with many historical figures and have fought many great warriors but managed to remain undefeated. Time of Shura is the story of the fighters of the Mutsu family and their adventures. Time of Shura picks up heavily from Japanese history and has plenty of historical figures like Musashi Miyamoto, the Shinsengumi, the Tokugawa shogunate, and many more. In a show full of samurai, it’s the Mutsu family’s unique unarmed fighting style that stands out the most. There’s a thrill in seeing the members of the Mutsu family go swordless against some of the most formidable samurai ever and come out victorious, as well as seeing the sort of influence and impact this fictional family has had on real-life iconic figures.

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="B01LTHKLV0" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" October 2016 – December 2016 " post_id=""]

Toyohisa Shimazu was on the brink of death when he woke up in a room full of doors. He is sent through one of these doors and emerges in an alternate fantasy world. There, he meets other historical figures like the legendary warlord Oda Nobunaga and the archer Yoichi Suketaka Nasu. They are Drifters and must work together to combat the Ends, historical figures with evil ambitions for the world they now all live in. Drifters grabs iconic warriors from across history and tosses them in a fantasy setting with elves, dwarves, giants, dragons and basically any European traditional fantasy race you can think of and lets them hash it out in an epic war. The show doesn’t let off either, it seems there’s another epic figure brought in every episode to up the stakes. If the premise of seeing our world’s greatest warriors wield fantasy armies against each other doesn’t excite you then I’m not sure what will.

Final Thoughts

The samurai class continues to be a perfect place to mine stories for anime and combined with all of the anime genres out there, it always provides a unique world to explore. Not to mention how many outright great samurai there have been across history with a tale worth telling, or even whole groups like the Shinsengumi. This list sees anime combine many historical figures and factions and explore them in the case of series like Onihei, Time of Shura or Peace Maker Kurogane, or outright put them in completely unusual fantasy worlds and see how they overcome their supernatural foes. Rurouni Kenshin (samurai x) wallpaper

Samurai are fascinating, aren't they? As warriors, they charge head-first into battles, cutting through hordes of enemies with one of the best swords the world has ever seen. At the same time, they're also loyal vassals to their lords, and can even be loners who have their own take on bushido ("way of the warrior"). Their mystique is so strong, they've even inspired non-Japanese to create films like The Last Samurai, Red Sun and Shogun Assassin. Of course, no one knows the samurai better than the Japanese themselves. Although most of the anime below embellish the samurai's image a bit (but then, what fictional work doesn't?), they're still awesome enough to deserve a place on anyone's "must-watch" list. Without further ado, let's start off with:

10. Hakuouki: Shinsengumi Kitan

hakuouki-DVD
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" Apr 2010 – Jun 2010 "]

The Shinsengumi, an elite police force, existed at a time when the Tokugawa shogunate was beginning to lose power, and Japan was beginning to open its doors to foreigners. Historically, their main function was to keep anti-foreigner rebels at bay, though Hakuouki extends this further to include battling against monsters called Rasetsu. In the midst of it all is Yukimura Chizuru, a young woman who wanders into Kyoto while searching for her doctor father. She gets attacked by criminals, but is thankfully saved by the Shinsengumi (which, according to Hakuouki, is an all-bishounen group). Coincidentally, Chizuru and the group happen to be searching for the same person, and so she ends up staying with them for a while. Even though this show is pegged as a "reverse harem," it doesn't focus much on the romance. Instead, it has well-done fight scenes, great character development for each of the Shinsengumi members, and a mystery puzzle you can solve one episode at a time. Whether you're a fan of pretty boys or not, this show has something for you.

9. Sengoku Basara

sengoku basara dvd
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" Apr 2009 – Jun 2009 "]

On the other hand, Sengoku Basara takes us back to the years before the rise of the Tokugawa shogunate. At the time, warlords from all over Japan fought for ultimate control of the country. None of them, however, came as close to their goal as Oda Nobunaga, who was willing to use any means necessary (read: massacring innocent people) to fulfill his ambition. Naturally, the other warlords decided to band against him… …and that's about as historically accurate as this show gets. Otherwise, it's one over-the-top scene after the other: Generals that literally wipe out entire armies with a single swing of the sword/axe/spear, horses decked out like Harley Davidson motorcycles (I'm looking at you, Date Masamune), and heaps of insanity all around. (That may be a good thing or a bad thing, depending on your preferences.) At any rate, this is definitely one of the most memorable shows to come out within the last decade — what with Masamune's random Engrish and Sanada Genjirou Yukimura's passionate declarations about his "oyakata-sama" and "burning soul," among other things.

8. Samurai 7

samurai7 DVD
[Information episodes=" 26 " aired=" Jun 2004 – Dec 2004 "]

Can't have a "top samurai shows" list without a Kurosawa-inspired piece, can we? Like its internationally-acclaimed predecessor, Samurai 7 revolves around a village constantly attacked by bandits. One day, the village elder decides that they've had enough, and tasks a group to recruit seven samurai in exchange for rice (since the village is too poor to offer money). The group had a bit of difficulty at first, until they encounter a shell-shocked veteran named Shimada Kambei, who helps them gather the rest of the warriors. Make no mistake, though: Samurai 7 isn't a carbon-copy of Kurosawa's film. It puts a steampunk twist to the story, with the bandits becoming mechas called Nobuseri. Additionally, the relationship between Kirara and Okamoto Katsushiro is further explored, and ends differently from that in the film. Lastly, the pacing is just right for each episode, and eventually leads to a bittersweet, but satisfying, conclusion.

7. Saraiya Goyou (House of Five Leaves)

saraiya goyou DVD
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" Aired: Apr 2010 – Jul 2010 "]

Although Akitsu Masanosuke is a skilled samurai, he never stays employed for long due to his awkward personality. This changes when he meets Yaichi, who offers him a job as a yojimbo (bodyguard) for a group called the "Five Leaves." As Masanosuke soon finds out, the group isn't what it seems, but he's intrigued enough to stay with them all the same. Unlike the shows we've listed so far, Saraiya Goyou isn't action-oriented. Instead, it slowly rounds out its characters, none of whom can be considered truly "good" or "evil." The art style and music also fit the show's gray themes perfectly, though the art can take time to get used to. Overall, if you want something different from the usual samurai show, Saraiya Goyou might just fit the bill.

6. Hyouge Mono

Hyouge Mono dvd
[Information episodes=" 39 " aired=" Apr 2011 – Jan 2012 "]

Another slow samurai show is Hyouge Mono, which takes place during Japan's Warring States Period (Sengoku Jidai). Now, you normally wouldn't put "slow" and "Warring States Period" in the same sentence — until you realize that, hey, even samurai need to chill out once in a while. When samurai aren't slashing at each other, they participate in cultural pursuits like tea ceremonies. Such is the obsession of Furuta Sasuke, a vassal of none other than Oda Nobunaga himself. At the end of episode's run, a question is posed which sums up Sasuke's dilemma: "To be an aesthete or a warrior?" (Note: An aesthete is a person who appreciates art and beauty more than anything else.) To be fair, Hyouge Mono isn't for everyone. If 39 episodes of old men chattering about tea doesn't interest you, it'd be a total pain to sit through this show. But if you're willing to give it a chance, this show is great at showcasing a different, quieter side of the Sengoku era.

5. Stranger: Mukou Hadan (Sword of the Stranger)

sword of stranger DVD
[Information episodes=" 1 " aired=" Sep 2007 "]

And now, let's get back to the action, shall we? This time around, we have a young boy named Kotaro, who's on the run from a group of elite Ming soldiers. Among these soldiers is Rarou (Luo-Lang in Mandarin Chinese), a blonde-and-blue-eyed Westerner who wants nothing more than to fight a worthy opponent. Fortunately for Rarou, Kotaro hires Nanashi — a mysterious but skilled samurai — as his bodyguard, and so the destinies of the three collide. First off, this movie's fight scenes are some of the best in anime. You can see every swing of the sword, every dodge of the foot and every cut into skin, but the action doesn't slow down for even a single frame. Also, everyone in this film is a badass (including the dog!), so you'll have a heck of a ride when characters go into Fight Mode. Lastly, the art and animation are fantastic, thanks in part to the efforts of Tsunenori Saito and Nakamura Yutaka — both of whom also worked on Cowboy Bebop, Fullmetal Alchemist and Eureka Seven, among others.

4. Shigurui: Death Frenzy

Shigurui dvd
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" Jul 2007 – Oct 2007 "]

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that "Sword of the Stranger" is a violent film, but most of the violence happens off-screen, or is blurred. Shigurui, on the other hand… Well, if you liked Ninja Scroll and Basilisk, Shigurui is pretty much on-par with them in terms of the "gore" factor. This anime follows Fujiki Gennosuke and Irako Seigen, both of whom are potential successors to the school of Iwamoto Kogan, Japan's greatest swordsman. Only one of them can take the post, however, so they battle it out in a bloody tournament that'll test not only their worth as warriors, but also their humanity. Shigurui may be one of the most disturbing shows — samurai or otherwise — you'll ever watch. There's the man who gutted himself to protest against a fight, and another whose bizarre sex scene will burn into your brain for days after you see it. If you can stomach all that, however, Shigurui offers an interesting — if extremely cynical — perspective about the samurai mythos.

3. Samurai Champloo

dvd Samurai Champloo
[Information episodes=" 26 " aired=" May 2004 – Mar 2005 "]

On a lighter note, we have Samurai Champloo, which is on so many "Top X Anime" lists, I'm not sure what else I can say about it that hasn't been said before. But I'll recap the basic plot all the same. At the heart of this show is Fuu, a somewhat air-headed but plucky waitress who wants to find a "samurai who smells like sunflowers." When a violent fight breaks out in her workplace, and the participants were about to be executed, she saves two of them: Mugen, a bad-tempered warrior with a breakdance-like fighting style, and Jin, a straight-laced but strong samurai in his own right. Together, they set out to help Fuu complete her quest, and have zany adventures along the way. As many have pointed out, this show has awesome music. You'll bob your head in time with Nujabes' songs, and the soundtrack hits all the right notes (pun intended) with scenes like Mugen's flashbacks. Also, the combination of Edo period and modern elements may seem odd, but in true Watanabe Shinichiro fashion, they blend together as well as Samurai Champloo's main trio.

2. Rurouni Kenshin: Meiji Kenkaku Romantan

Rurouni Kenshin dvd
[Information episodes=" 94 " aired=" Jan 1996 – Sep 1998 "]

This show is a classic in the samurai genre, and for good reason. It's about Himura Kenshin, who was formerly known as Battousai, a hitokiri ("man-slayer") for the government during the Bakumatsu. For some mysterious reason, he decides to leave that old life, and now that he is in the peaceful Meiji era, he wants nothing more than to be a rurouni ("wanderer") who will never kill again. Unfortunately for him, former enemies keep coming back to haunt him. Rurouni Kenshin revolves around a simple, but powerful, conflict: Will Kenshin remain true to his "no-kill" vow, or will he become Battousai again to protect his country from powerful, bloodthirsty enemies? Granted, the TV series' quality can be uneven, with fillers taking up most of the latter part, but when this show is good, it's awesome.

rurouni kenshin DVD

1. Gintama

Gintama dvd
[Information episodes=" 201 " aired=" Apr 2006 – Mar 2010 "]

To be honest, I wasn't sure whether to put this in the top spot or not. After all, Gintama is best known for its toilet humor, and this probably isn't the right list for Sorachi Hideaki's obra maestra to be number one. But, after taking into account everything that happened during the serious arcs, I think I've made the right decision. See, Gintama presents multiple perspectives on what it means to be a samurai. To the main character, Sakata Gintoki, being a samurai is about protecting what he wants to protect (read: his oddball group of friends). To Katsura "Zura" Kotaro, a joi rebel, it's about freeing the country from the Amanto. To Sakamoto Tatsuma, it's about bringing smiles to others through his business ventures. To Takasugi Shinsuke, it's about reclaiming the honor of the samurai — and avenging Shouyou-sensei — by any means necessary. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. You also have the Shinsengumi (made up of "country samurai"), the Shimura siblings and many others. Even the Yato — the universe's strongest mercenary race — view the samurai as worthy opponents. What I'm saying is, behind all of its dirty jokes and self-deprecating humor, Gintama is a show that handles its samurai themes unlike any other.

gintama walpaper

gintama wallpaper

Considering the overall quality of the samurai genre, I'm sure plenty of gems were left out, like Peacemaker Kurogane, Kazemakase Tsukikage Ran, Afro Samurai, Mushibugyou, Mutsu Enmei Ryuu Gaiden and many others. So if you have anything to say about my choices, let's have a friendly(!) discussion in the comments.

The Game of Shogi: As Seen In Hunter x Hunter

Chess… this is probably the most well-known comparison to Shogi in the western world. This game, played with 20 pieces has very similar rules to chess and the aim of the game is to capture the king. The term “Shogi” was created from the word “shogunate” and believed to mean “game of generals.” It was officially recognized by shogun, Tokugawa Yoshimune who constantly had the game played in his castle and gave endowments to the undefeated players. Since its inception, Shogi has made its way into Japanese pop culture and anime such as Hunter x Hunter.

History

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="NEOBK-2244682" text="" url="" ]

The first hint that early Shogi was played was in the year 1058 after shogi pieces were found at the pagoda of Kafuku-ji. It was thought to originate from the early form of Chinese chess. However, the game was not officially recognized by the Japanese government until 1612 and the rules were then established nationwide. This is why some believe its origin to be around the same time as European chess, approximately 500 years ago. However, from the evidence of the ancient pieces, early Shogi originated far beyond 1612. Now Shogi is played in many countries around the world after being popularized in the 1990’s. Shogi is a popular game in Japan and national tournaments are held annually. Since the shogun, Yoshimune made the game of Shogi all the rage, we now set November 17th as national Shogi Day as this is the date that he set the tournaments in his castle.

Rules

The game is played with two players, each with 20 pieces which include 1 king, 1 rook, 1 bishop, 2 gold generals, 2 lances, 2 silver generals, 9 pawns, and 2 knights. Each piece can move in a different pattern, some with the same rules as European chess and some different ones as well. Rather than the elaborately carved pieces you see in chess, Shogi pieces are flat with Japanese calligraphy on them indicating what rank the piece is. Your initial pattern tends to be spread over three lines, always with the same set up as your opponent. Once you are able to move your players into your opponent's three original rows, that piece can be promoted; this will allow the piece to move in different patterns and become more deadly. The aim is to capture your opponent’s king which will ultimately end the game.

Final Thoughts

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="NEOGDS-217990" text="" url="" ]

While Shogi is an incredibly interesting game, its history prior the 1600s is still largely unknown. Shrouded in historical mystery, this game still contains many secrets. We bid you to take a break from your video games and try something a little different. These games still have their place in society and we hope that you will enjoy this one. As always, please feel free to leave comments below with your thoughts, feelings and musings. Thank you for reading and we hope that this article has encouraged you to try something new!

Story

The Onion Kingdom is in trouble once more and the Onion King needs your help! The Un-bread are threatening the Onion Kingdom. Do you have what it takes to save everyone? You’ll need to assemble your crew of chefs in order to tackle the Un-bread one kitchen at a time!

Gameplay

Overcooked! 2 comes back to us with all new puzzles, kitchens, and challenges. This time, Overcooked! 2 is available on all of the main consoles making it easier to find someone to play with than before. You’ll need them, too, as you tackle on new recipes and cooking challenges from magical kitchens to figuring out how to make siu mai. It’s a whole slew of new challenges, but that just means all new fun. As fans of the original game, we were ecstatic to hear that a sequel of Overcooked was coming out, so when a copy of the game landed on our laps prior to the release, you can bet we were excited. We didn’t even hesitate to download it ASAP and start up our Nintendo Switch to see what new gameplay Overcooked! 2 had to offer.
As far as gameplay goes, it’s very much the same as the original game with all of the gameplay being in the kitchen. Of course, there’s going to be new challenges as we tried to figure out how to deal with hot air balloon kitchens, magical portals, and more. Kitchens are in neverending chaos, and just when you think you have it all figured out, Overcooked! 2 throws you yet another curveball. Some of the challenges come with evolving kitchens as they go from one disaster to the next, like being on two or three ever moving rafts that suddenly crash and you find yourself trying to figure out how to adapt while getting your orders in. Without setting the kitchen completely on fire, of course. This is exciting and continues to keep us on our toes regardless if we were playing in single player mode or as a party. One of the fun aspects of Overcooked! 2 is the inclusion of new foods. New recipes mean the game stays challenging, and boy, was it extremely challenging. It took us forever to properly figure out how to make siu mai! Some of the recipes really made the game difficult to play solo like the siu mai or the more complicated sushi kitchens. It was a mess to say the least. Even with 2 players, some of them are scary hard. We found ourselves scrambling for more players in order to make it through each level, but it’s hard when schedules don’t exactly align. Gosh, this is totally meant to be a party game and if you don’t have a party, you’re going to have a hard time.
[ad_middle class="mt40 mb40"]

Honey's Gameplay Consensus:

Despite all of the new stuff, for the most part, Overcooked! 2 is pretty much the same game as the first one. It’s an enjoyable chaotic party game that gets everyone involved. You may not have been close to anyone else before this game, but after this, you’re going to find your teamwork is 100% better. It’s all fun and games until the kitchen burns down.

Honey's Pros:

  • Same fun gameplay
  • New recipes
  • 5 (6 if on the Switch) new chefs that you can unlock
  • Everchanging kitchen arenas
  • Story mode, arcade mode, versus mode are all available for different game play

Honey's Cons:

  • Hard to play on your own

Honey's Final Verdict:

If you are a fan of party games, simulators, or just mass chaos, Overcooked! 2 has you covered. It brings back all the fun of the first with a few new features that is sure to excite everyone. We highly recommend it to any fan of the original. Of course, we are more than excited to continue playing it and cannot wait for more players to get the game so that we can get a few people to play with! Thanks for joining us for another game review, everyone. We look forward to hearing from you in the comments below!

1. Same Excitement as Before

We have to say, Shokugeki no Soma: San no Sara Tootsuki Ressha-hen had us on our toes a lot of the time with each shokugeki appearing to be more difficult than the last. It’s especially tough this season considering how everyone wants to knock out our favorite characters and expel them from Tootsuki.

2. More Food

If you watch Shokugeki no Soma for the food, then you won’t be disappointed by Shokugeki no Soma: San no Sara Tootsuki Ressha-hen. This season, we are taking a look at Hokkaido dishes and really diving into Hokkaido cuisine, which is really an area that not many anime seem to touch up on (the prefecture, not just the cuisine). We get to see a lot of delicious dishes that some may not realize exist! Plus, with things being so difficult for Souma and his group, you get to see how they make the most with the little that they are given in order to pass their exams! Just watch how resourceful they can be and how they apply their Hokkaido knowledge!

3. Story

We will admit that we didn’t totally love Shokugeki no Soma: Ni no Sara since there was absolutely no plot progression aside from that typical character growth part (We get to watch Souma learn a few things!). Shokugeki no Soma: San no Sara Tootsuki Ressha-hen is completely different with us being able to see how other characters grow in their cooking and confidence. Actually, the best part is that we get to see more background story for a lot of characters like Erina and Jouichiro! This makes it a lot more interesting as we get to see more about characters other than Souma. Who else had questions about Jouichiro and his time at Tootsuki? Well, come watch Shokugeki no Soma: San no Sara Tootsuki Ressha-hen!

Why You Should Skip Shokugeki no Soma: San no Sara Tootsuki Ressha-hen (Food Wars! The Third Plate: Totsuki Train Arc)

1. Tournaments

If you absolutely hate the shounen way of doing things, especially the endless tournaments meant to showcase skill and ridiculous dramatizations of everyday concepts, then you will hate Shokugeki no Soma: San no Sara Tootsuki Ressha-hen. It’s actually just a shokugeki every episode with each student (mostly Souma) battling fighting to pass their exams. If this doesn’t excite you the way it does others, don’t touch this arc.

From classics like Sally the Witch all the way to deconstructions like Madoka Magica and Mahou Shoujo Ore, it’s clear that the magical girl genre has been a beloved part of the anime world for a very long time. But strangely enough, the Western world has had very little exposure to one of the most prominent magical girl franchises of the past few decades – Pretty Cure. Today, we’re going to take a short look at a hidden gem of anime, often overlooked because of its young demographic. But trust us – there’s more to it than just cute costumes and toys. We’re entering the sparkly world of Pretty Cure~!

What is Precure (Pretty Cure)?

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="PCBX-51762" text="" url="" ]

Pretty Cure began its life back in 2004 when Toei Animation released its aptly named first installment Futari wa Precure (meaning “The Two of Us are Pretty Cure”). It tells the story of two young girls who must work together, despite their conflicting personalities, to defeat the evil monsters threatening their world by transforming into the superheroes Cure Black and Cure White. This kind of concept had obviously been done before, but the two things that set Precure apart were its focus on character relationships and, most importantly, its surprisingly intense fight scenes. Cures Black and White didn’t just fire spells at their foes; they punched and kicked and got right up in their faces. Seeing these cute girls beating the crap out of their enemies was what made adult anime fans sit up and pay attention. Who knew girls in frilly outfits could throw down like they’re in Dragon Ball Z?

Something for everyone

As of 2018, Pretty Cure has 15 installments covering 13 different teams of Cures (Futari wa Precure and Yes! Precure 5 had second seasons). Like Super Sentai and Kamen Rider, each new series exists in a separate continuity, so you can pick one at random without needing any context. They all have different art styles, themes, and team structures, so you’re bound to find one that fits your style. Be sure to check out “Finding the Right Precure Series for You” for detailed recommendations! One of our favorites is Smile Precure (Glitter Force), which features a five-person team themed around storybook tales. It’s a great place for a new viewer to start since it uses a more familiar Sailor Moon/Super Sentai team structure and strikes a balance between traditional magical girl cutesiness and kickass intensity. And since it’s from 2012, the CG during transformations and the end credits dances is crisp and beautiful. If you’re looking for a good introduction to the franchise, you can’t go wrong with Smile Precure.

Why haven’t I heard of it?

Unlike Super Sentai, which was adapted into Power Rangers, Precure hasn’t seen much popularity outside of Japan. Futari wa Precure got a Canadian English dub in 2009 (which was pretty faithful to the original, despite some Westernized names), but its limited success meant that Western fans had to rely on fansubs for every series afterwards. That is, until Netflix came into the scene. Saban, the localization company behind Power Rangers, dubbed Smile Precure as Glitter Force on Netflix in 2015. It’s a pure ‘90s-style dub, with American names for everyone and episodes chopped up to create new narratives. It’s not the worst thing ever, but unless you’re watching with your little sibling, it’s best to stick to subs for this franchise.

Despite its primary demographic of little girls, Pretty Cure has a lot going for it that the adult anime fan can enjoy. You do have to be on board for a lot of moe cuteness and routine episode formats, but the amazing fight scenes and emotionally powerful character moments make it so much more than just another magical girl show. So strike a girly pose and check it out! What are your thoughts on Pretty Cure? Had you ever heard of it before? Does it sound like something you’d like to watch? Let us know in the comments, and thanks so much for reading!
