  • The folks over at Tokyo Otaku Mode are proud to bring you an exclusive interview with Kamikaze Douga, a leading Japanese studio that has worked on popular titles such as Batman Ninja, Pop Team Epic, as well as opening themes for the first three parts of Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure, the ending theme of Touken Ranbu: Hanamaru, Idolish7’s “WiSH VOYAGE” music video, and more. They've given us the great privilege of sharing this interview with you, so please take the time to read it and also fill out the survey at the end! While you're at it, be sure to check out the official content page which discusses "Anime Production Studios Gaining Global Attention and Paving the Way to the Future".
  • This is just one of many interviews that the team have conducted, but this one in particular is quite special. The density of one cut. The passion condensed into a work. Something that no one can deny about Kamikaze Douga’s works is their unique visuals. In the first half of 2018, they celebrated the release of the hit anime Pop Team Epic as well as the international release of the studio’s first feature-length film, Batman Ninja. Kamikaze Douga has become a leading Japanese anime studio in the fifteen years since its inception.
  • The name “kamikaze” was chosen for the meaning “to perform recklessly without looking away.” Tokyo Otaku Mode sat down with Junpei Mizusaki, the CEO of Kamikaze Douga, the studio that lives up to the meaning of its name, and the director of Batman Ninja. We have the full interview for you right here, so let's take a look into the life of Kamikaze Douga!

I Want To Create CGI Appropriate For a Japanese Person

TOM: Please tell us about why you founded the studio. Mizusaki: It’s been a while since I’ve talked about starting the studio. At first, I didn’t imagine creating a studio that would deal with projects and genres of this scale. At first, it was a three-person production unit that just worked without forming a legal corporation. I don’t think there were many anime created by just a few people twenty years ago. But we started Kamikaze Douga as a test to see if the three of us could create anime using CGI software, thinking of it as another team member. We didn’t want to come up with realistic or figure-like models like Pixar and other Hollywood studios use, so we experimented and researched whether or not we could use CGI as a substitute for cel animation. It was something that most people weren’t trying, and what we made ended up winning a film contest because it was so rare. We decided to make that our job instead and we properly started a studio as a corporation. We had a problem with the film and anime industry as Japanese studios tend to aim for CGI that looks like Pixar and other Hollywood studios. Why is everyone using CGI to make images that look American? We chose the studio’s name with a slightly strong feeling of what’s wrong with Japanese people doing their best to make CGI that’s appropriate for Japanese people?

Raise the Quality of the Worst Cut

TOM: Kamikaze Douga’s images are very unique. I believe that this studio is aiming for something in between 2D and 3D in a way that only this studio can do. Where does that uniqueness come from? Mizusaki: I don’t think that we’re forcing ourselves to work our way there, but it’s just our base. I like the density of, for example, Weekly Shonen Jump’s front cover. Having graphic design experience is really useful. I know how to handle flyers, websites, publishing layouts, typesetting, images, and block copy. If I put this here, it will look denser or if I put that there, it will improve the arrangement. That foundation is now basically muscle memory, so while the film might end up looking very dense, it isn’t like we do that much more work. We just focus on where and how to put things. Another thing we do straightforwardly is look through the entire film, choose the worst cut, and raise its quality. When we do that, we can find the second-worst cut. It isn’t about making a good cut better, but to find something low quality and fix it. By doing that, the average quality naturally rises. We’ll say things like, “This bothers me, but it isn’t critical so we can leave it.” But the next day it’ll be fixed. (Everyone laughs) I’m really grateful to everyone.

“Compromise is Death”

TOM: What has been the hardest period for the studio? Mizusaki: Right now, as a director, I’m in a position where I can have everyone gain experience and perform different roles, but it was the hardest when I was at the forefront of things. We were trying to push out work using an animation production technique that the rest of the world hadn’t approved of, so I was personally in charge of the highest number of CGI cuts. That amount of work was insane. For those 21 days, there were times when I didn’t even lie down to sleep. Then, a turning point came in the form of a music video made using animation. If we were able to succeed with that project, then Kamikaze Douga’s position would change. At the very end of that project, I gave up on a single cut. It was a cut that a normal person wouldn’t notice. It wasn’t a critical mistake and we were able to release it in the best quality we could, but since I was really on the verge of collapsing, we released it without fixing it. I usually wouldn’t do such a thing, though. But after that, I’ve had to see that cut on multiple occasions, and it makes me fidgety. I know that I’m the only one who notices, but I just think about how we could have made it a little better. I feel a little dispirited when I see it and I can’t be confident about it. Even though it’s something everyone made with pride, I feel guilty about that. It makes me feel like I died. You’ll die if you compromise. “Compromise is death” doesn’t mean, “Don’t compromise,” nor does it mean, “You should die if you compromise.” It means, “Do you have the resolve to carry this project to your death?”

I Want to See The Idiosyncrasies Drawn By Satisfied People

Mizusaki: We already talked about how we work bottom-up from the worst cut, but the Japanese animation industry generally shares the same viewpoints. I dislike that “Japanese animation industry is like this, this is what’s common sense” way of thinking. TOM’s note: In Japan, the low wages and difficult working conditions for animators are often brought up as a social problem. At Kamikaze Douga, we have created an environment with everything that staff members need. We receive the amount of money needed during production. That’s a must. No staff members stay at work late, and if they do overtime, they properly get paid for it. It’s what is only natural, but I want it to become normal. I want to see how Japanese animation will change through the idiosyncrasies drawn by people who are satisfied by eating right, enjoying themselves, spending time with their families, taking holidays, reading their favorite manga, and watching their favorite movies.

There’s No Such Thing as An Absolute Right Answer

TOM: What experiences led you to thinking about creating this kind of organization? Mizusaki: I don’t know what precise action led to it, but I’ve always moved around. My father was in the Self-Defense Force, so every four years, we would move. I lived in four different areas in elementary and middle school, so I’ve noticed a lot of things after having seen different regions. There is no absolute right answer in adulthood. In different elementary schools, they do things differently. Same with middle schools. Even though the textbooks were the same, the teachers had different ways of thinking. But each teacher had something they believed was absolutely correct. I began thinking that maybe adults present illogical ideas to children. That might be the basis for my ideal organization. How should the people at the top be? There might be times where I’m the source of something irrational. How can I avoid that? I kept growing the company while constantly grappling with these problems. One of the big differences I have with other people is that I don’t have a hometown. I don’t know what it feels like to go back to my hometown. Maybe because I didn’t have a specific place for me, I wanted to make one. This studio might be it.

I Want People To Know Japanese Anime

TOM: Please let me ask some questions about you not as the studio’s CEO, but as Mr. Mizusaki the director. As the director of Batman Ninja, what message did you want to give to international anime fans? Mizusaki: When we made Batman Ninja , our strongest thought was that we want people to know Japanese anime. We wanted them to know what Japanese anime is. We didn’t want to force ourselves to match people in the English-speaking world through atmosphere or spirit or vigor, but instead constructed the film to show off the various merits of Japanese anime. The number of Hollywood movies based on Japanese stories have been increasing. Many of them have been adapted in really bold ways. So, this time, when we were given Batman to work with, we had the similar idea of “when in Rome, do as the Romans do.” If he’s going to come all the way to Japan, we’re not going to let him come into our home with his shoes on. We’ll still be strict even though he’s Batman. The other characters don’t speak English, either, and though he tried to win using the Batmobile and his communication systems, they didn’t work. He had to fight using the methods of Japan at that time. “When in Rome, do as the Romans do” is one of the themes of the story. I told DC Comics and Warner Bros. to leave it up to me and to wait for me so I could make a Japanese anime using all the power I had. They allowed me to use their important character, Batman, so I promised not to ruin his character and then went and made an anime with him. DC Comics was really lenient with allowing me to do that. When we screened the film at WonderCon in Anaheim, I thought the fans would get really mad. Instead, the parts that we designed to be funny or exciting got through to the audience perfectly. Batman has a long history and there have been different Batmans. It’s actually a very humorous series, so I’m really happy that the humor that we included in Batman Ninja got across to the viewers.

What’s A Wonderful Idea?

TOM: Before we began this interview project, we surveyed 300 international anime fans and asked them what they wanted to ask Japanese anime creators. The question that popped up the most was, “How do you come up with such wonderful ideas?” Mizusaki: I don’t think that people who make anime think all their ideas are wonderful. We bring out our values and ideas that we think are great without embarrassment, and it just so happens that the viewers think they’re wonderful. I also do my best to think about the audience, their point of view, and how they’re watching when I’m thinking of ideas. Will it be on Youtube? Will they watch it in a theater? For example, when I was coming up with difficult jokes for Pop Team Epic , I thought that people who understood the references and those who didn’t could communicate with each other about it, so I decided to make some of the parts without punchlines even harder. The audience was to become the straight man, so we made clips that would make the audience react as the straight man on social media. I’ve banned the word “motivation” from my vocabulary, since it’s only natural that I should be full of it. That’s talent. If you’re not motivated, then this isn’t the industry for you. If the creators aren’t driven to create anime, then their results won’t be interesting.

Spielberg Won’t Let Me Grow Up

TOM: Are there any foreign creators who influenced you? Mizusaki: First, there’s Michel Gondry, the director of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, who started out filming music videos. The range of being able to do music videos to feature-length films is a dream, but also his work is great, like “Come Into My World” by Kylie Minogue. It’s a simple idea, but I can watch it forever. There’s also Brad Bird. The Iron Giant is wonderful. He originally worked on The Simpsons but he was able to direct Mission: Impossible, too. That’s amazing. I’ve been a big fan of The Simpsons for a long time. I know this is a cliched answer, but I can’t leave out Steven Spielberg. When I was in first grade, my father took me and all my neighborhood friends to see E.T. It was a big hit, but it was even bigger within our town. The atmosphere of the film, that universe...It was scary but full of dreams. I drew so many pictures of E.T. and his wrinkles. I kept getting influenced by him little by little, like with Jurassic Park and Minority Report. Mr. Spielberg won’t let me grow up. When the Gundam Mobile Suit appeared in Ready Player One, I returned to being six years old.

I Want People to Enjoy the Charms of Domestically Aimed Japanese Anime

TOM: Please say a few words for anime fans around the world. Mizusaki: I think we’re keeping Japanese anime at a high level of quality right now, but I don’t know if that will continue. I have some misgivings that maybe the Japanese animation industry will lose its power. I strongly feel like I have to tell fans around the world that Japanese animation will continue. Since I feel so intensely about it, I think that spirit may have appeared in Batman Ninja. I like the phrase “Galapagos phenomenon,” referring to how Japanese products are often meant only for the domestic market. Since Japan is an island country, its geography and its history make it a country that has its own unique characteristics. There are no national borders touching ours and we’re still not used to international cooperation. We’re not good at it. But I think the Galapagos phenomenon is always interesting. It’s important to not be swayed by international standards but instead to work seriously on our projects in a way that suits us. If anime fans around the world want to keep seeing our work, I want to meet their expectations.

    Hokuto no Ken Introduction

    [sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="ASBY-4011" text="" url="" ]

In the year 199X, the world has been destroyed by nuclear war. Not only has it destroyed modern civilization, it has created only one law – ONLY THE STRONG SURVIVE! Thugs terrorize the innocent and many martial arts masters are claiming their right to rule the world. On the other hand, Kenshiro, the master of Hokuto Shinken, is one of the few masters who are still willing to protect the innocent. However, his punches and kicks don’t knock you out, they make you explode!

What We Liked About Hokuto no Ken

While Dragon Ball Z popularized explosive action, Hokuto no Ken was one of the first to try it, but it takes a different approach. As opposed to having colliding fists and shins causing sonic booms, a simple touch can make a dude’s guts burst out! The series has a lot of action and is certainly for those that love classic martial arts films and 1980s macho films popularized by Schwarzenegger, Chuck Norris and Stallone and Mad Max. It perfectly mixes everything and is certainly for those that are fond of the 1980s.

Why You Should Watch Hokuto no Ken

    1. It’s fast paced

Putting aside its episode length, the series gets to the point. The action is really explosive, quick, and constant. It’s really easy to binge watch and the story arcs are excellently organized. You get to know not only Kenshiro, but also its supporting cast and the villains. There are some villains like your typical thug that deserves to die, while there are some antagonists that viewers can sympathize with.

    2. Man Tears

As we all know, Hokuto no Ken is considered one of the manliest titles created in the history of Japanese pop culture, but it also popularized man tears. Though the anime doesn’t capture it as dramatically as the manga, it shows that it’s ok for men to cry. Despite how strong Kenshiro is, the anime shows he is still human and that he can’t save everyone Though he can throw a hundred punches in a matter of seconds, he can’t be everywhere at once to protect an innocent old lady being brutally murdered by a lawless psychopath. Yet, whenever the battle is over, he looks to the sunset and sheds tears for whom he could not avenge.

    3. Solid Seiyuu cast

Skip any dub whether it is English, Spanish, or French because the original Japanese cast contains a list of legends. Akira Kamiya, also the voice of Ryo from City Hunter, Roy Focker from Macross, and Sincline from Go-Lion (or Lotor in Voltron) plays the role of Kenshiro. In addition to Akira Kamiya, the series has Kenji Utusmi (also the voice of Kamogawa in Hajime no Ippo) as Raoh, Toshio Furukawa (most famous as the voice of Piccolo) as Shin, and many others.

    [ad_middle class="mt40"]

Why You Should Skip Hokuto no Ken

    1. Abuses Recycled Footage

Just like how Sailor Moon abuses recycled footage with the transformations and final techniques, Hokuto no Ken is equally guilty of over using Kenshiro tearing his shirt off with his aura and muscles along with footage of his techniques, most notably his Hyakuretsuken. This quality is pretty much abused throughout anime titles between the 1980s and the early 2000s so if you’re not used to watching older anime, it will get older than a song that gets overplayed on the radio.

    2. Toxic Masculinity

In recent years, the media has popularized the term “toxic masculinity” in regards to the negative aspects of what traditionally has defined masculinity. Despite all the man tears this anime sheds, it is certainly full of toxic masculinity in a modern day definition. Kenshiro may not care about masculinity but fans of the series see the character as a model of old school masculinity compared to, let’s say, some other modern male anime characters. This series can create that mentality in its fanbase. Many of Kenshiro’s enemies exhibit it. Shin is one pure example on the negative effects of toxic masculinity for the sake of proving he’s a man’s man, and how it is harmful to him and others. Raoh gives a different portrayal on the negative effects of toxic masculinity, but he also shows the good on what it means to be a man since he doesn’t make any excuses for his failures and is willing to make sacrifices when necessary in conjunction to his personal masculinity.

    3. Not for the squeamish

Last, we would like to say that this anime is certainly not for the squeamish. As stated, bodies explode, guts fall out and there is countless blood. While it is tamed compared to the manga, this is not for people who don’t enjoy excessive violence in their anime.

    Final Thoughts

    [sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="crunchyroll" url="http://www.crunchyroll.com/fist-of-the-north-star/episode-109-conclusion-of-the-final-chapter-now-revealed-the-2000-year-history-of-the-north-star-512502" ]

While it has been a cult hit for the past 30 years in the West, it is still regarded as a classic in its native Japan. For those that aren’t familiar, it is a multimedia franchise in Japan. Without including the anime and its original manga, it has numerous video games, figures, soap and shampoo products, official condoms and pachinko games! That’s how big the series is in Japan! While Hokuto no Ken is over 30-years-old, if you’re not into old anime, you can watch the Legends OVA/movie series instead but uses new seiyuus that don’t live up to the original cast. So if you want to watch one of the most influential titles of all time (Rumiko Takahashi, Masashi Kishimoto and Tooru Fujisawa have all claimed they were inspired by Hokuto no Ken), then do what you can to check it out!

In the Kingdom of Fiore, magic is a regular part of human life and at the core of magical activity are the magic guilds – wizard groups which are much like lobbies where members can find and tackle job requests together. One of the top guilds in the land is the legendary Fairy Tail, which is seen as a great place of strength and family values. 17-year-old Lucy Heartfilia is a mage looking to become a fully-fledged wizard by joining Fairy Tail. After being tricked by a man claiming to be from the infamous guild, Lucy is saved by Natsu Dragneel, a powerful wizard who is a notable member of Fairy Tail, who then invites her to join him at the guild, where she meets a number of eccentric characters and alongside the other members, battles the forces of evil. Jellal Fernandes is a character who sought to revive the Dark Mage Zeref, using the R-System to do it. However, before executing his plan he was a member of the Magic Council under the alias “Siegrain”, he had been possessed and became incredibly evil. After being defeated and revived, he lost his memories. The returning memories made him loathe himself, believing himself to be deserving of justice, no matter how it shall be meted out. As an evil mage, Jellal sees life as a simple game, one where the loss of life means absolutely nothing to him, not even his own.

In the 22nd century, law enforcement has changed, particularly in Japan where the Sibyl System is enforced. The system is an objective means of observing the mental state of each citizen for signs of criminal intent, and hence determining their level of threat to society – their Psycho Pass. Inspectors are law enforcement officers who subjugate individual who display any level of ill-will, at times using lethal means. Inspectors work alongside Enforcers who are former inspectors turned criminal who are spared in exchange for doing work for Inspectors. Young Tsunemori Akane is a woman with an admirable sense of justice, but as she performs her duties alongside Enforcer Kougami Shinya, she begins to notice imperfections in Sibyl’s judgments and begins to doubt whether or not Sibyl can truly mete out justice. Makishima Shogo is the antagonist of Psycho Pass, a stoic character who committed heinous crimes in an attempt to flip the Sibyl-reliant society on its head and free Japan. He believes that the Sibyl System creates a nation of non-thinkers. Despite all his intentions and actions, his Psycho Pass remains unclouded, which makes him impossible to subjugate on any level and it is this which makes it easier for Makishima to carry out his plans. As a result of Sibyl not being able to recognise him, Makishima goes through life as a non-entity but he is wholly enamoured by humanity and human society, loving the darkest, cruellest parts of humanity, claiming that humanity under the Sibyl System is worthless.

With the sustained appearance of superpowers called “Quirks” in human beings, society rapidly becomes superhuman, bringing to the fore the profession people could only dream of and read about in comics: superheroes. With 80% of society having some sort of special ability, a fifth of people lack such powers, including Midoriya Izuku. After several months of gruelling training, Izuku enrolls at UA High, famous for its hero training program, beginning his journey to becoming the best hero. One of the primary antagonists of the series, the enigmatic Shigaraki Tomura is an individual who is of the mind that the current structure of society with heroes being so highly regarded is one that should change. Harbouring an immense level of contempt for heroes and the society that idolises them, Shigaraki aims to create a world without All Might, one which will shake the very core of justice in society. Hikigaya Hachiman is an apathetic high school student with intense narcissistic and nihilistic tendencies. His extreme pessimism makes him believe that joyful youth is nothing more than just a delusion. As punishment for writing an essay mocking social relationships, Hachiman’s teacher forces him to join the Volunteer Service Club, a club dedicated to helping any student who asks for their help. With the cold Yukinoshita Yukino being the only other club member, Hachiman ends up being the frontman of the club, having to listen to other people’s problems. Can Hachiman’s pessimistic view of human beings be useful in his new environment? Hikigaya Hachiman – a case of extreme pessimism borne out of personal experience. He believes that human social dynamics are a farce and expects the worst out of people. In that line, he also doesn’t spare himself any of the negativity. His characteristic “dead fish” eyes are markers of a markedly apathetic individual and his pessimistic way of solving problems leads others to call him “twisted”. He is openly hated by other characters and well, he doesn’t care. He doesn’t see any worth in himself and therefore doesn’t feel bad about becoming the scapegoat in a situation, or being hated, for that matter.

18-year-old Nakajima Atsushi’s orphanage is consistently under threat when a mystical tiger only he is aware of causes a series of strange incidents. Thought to be behind the occurrences, Atsushi is kicked out of the orphanage and left to fend for himself. While starving on a riverbank, Atsushi saves an eccentric man from drowning. The highly suicidal Dazai Osamu is a supernatural detective investigating the tiger that has been plaguing Atsushi’s life and eventually solves the case. The resolution of the case leaves Atsushi with no choice but to join Dazai’s firm of supernatural investigators as they take on cases that are unusual, alongside Dazai’s eccentric colleagues. Deliberately named after the Japanese author Dazai Osamu, Dazai is a suicide enthusiast as a direct nod to real-life Dazai Osamu’s numerous attempts at suicide throughout his life and his overall long-lived desire to die. As a nod to the author’s life, the character Dazai will lose no opportunity to find himself caught up in comical attempts to end his own life that never seem to go as he’d want. The comedy serves as an initial mask of the nature of the gaping hole that Dazai feels in his existence, one which causes him to seek meaning for his life.

Two years after Uzumaki Naruto leaves the Hidden Leaf Village for intense training, the Akatsuki group of rogue ninja are rapidly approaching the execution of their plan which puts the shinobi world at risk. Despite growing older and somewhat wiser, Naruto is still the same kid who wanted to become Hokage with an emboldening desire to protect his friends and the village. The story of the boy who wished to become the strongest ninja in the Hidden Leaf Village continues. Caring not for himself, for his village nor for any ideals he once bore, Obito becomes an empty person after the death of Rin. He focuses everything on the execution of Madara’s plan, believing it to be a just and that every crime committed as a result was a necessary evil. He was willing to sacrifice himself as well as his allies without a second thought. Despite all this, deep down Obito’s persona was a reaction to avoid coming into contact with the debilitating harshness of reality.

    1. Ulquiorra Cifer – BLEACH

    [sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="crunchyroll" url="http://www.crunchyroll.com/bleach/episode-272-untitled-542612" ]

15-year-old Kurosaki Ichigo is a high school student who has always had the uncanny ability to see and interact with ghosts. When a woman in a black kimono named Kuchiki Rukia suddenly appears in his room one night, she introduces herself as a Soul Reaper, an entity which exists to guide souls to the afterlife and purge evil spirits known as Hollows. Soon after Rukia’s arrival, a Hollow attacks Ichigo’s home and wounds Rukia, who offers Ichigo her powers so he can save his family. After the encounter, Ichigo is forced to take over Rukia’s job as a Soul Reaper and his life from then on is never the same again. Ulquiorra Cifer tops our list of anime nihilists because of the simple fact that Ulquiorra’s existence as a character in Bleach is as the very embodiment of a nihilistic mindset. He is nihilism given form, seeing no meaning or worth in anything, not even his own life. This is particularly evident in his death as after suffering defeat at the hands of Ichigo’s Hollow form, he demands that Ichigo kill him, to which Ichigo obliges. As a Hollow, Ulquiorra felt alone and lamented his very existence long before becoming an Arrancar and a member of Aizen’s Espada.

    Final Thoughts

Nihilism is an element which makes its way into several different types of anime as a result of the sheer number of characters who can portray nihilistic tendencies. These characters often serve as interesting explorations into human morality and values, while also serving as extremely cynical expressions in and of themselves. Some of these characters have been integral to some amazing stories. Sayounara Zetsubou Sensei (Goodbye Teacher Despair)’s Itoshiki Nozomu is one character we felt needed an honourable mention for his sense of despair. Are there other anime nihilists we’ve left out? Boxing has been around for over a century under its present rules. In addition to soccer, boxing is about as international of a sport as you can get and has athletes from every country you can think and that includes Japan. As many of you know, one of the top boxing titles in Japanese pop culture happens to be Hajime no Ippo. While it isn’t exactly the first ever boxing title in any media, what makes it distinct compared to other boxing franchises is how it educates the audience in relation to the sport. So for today’s article, we’d like to share how boxing is portrayed in Hajime no Ippo.

    The Basic Rules

    [sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="crunchyroll" url="http://www.crunchyroll.com/hajime-no-ippo-the-fighting/episode-12-the-anti-dempsey-perfected-646713" ]

Depending on the experience level of the combatants, bouts can be 4 rounds for beginning pro boxers, 6 rounds for lower intermediate, 8 round for higher intermediate, 10 for high level regional ranked boxers and/or lower world ranked boxers, and 12 for world title bouts. Each round is 3 minutes with a 1-minute interval between rounds. Fights can be won by knockout or decision based on a 10-point must system. For each round, a winner is given 10 points while a loser can be given 9 or less by a panel of 3 judges. If in the instance of a knockdown, a mandatory count to 10 is in administered by the referee. If a downed fighter cannot get up, it is ruled a knockout. If the referee determines that a fighter can no longer protect himself, they have full authority to stop the fight.

    Styles Make Fights

    [sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="crunchyroll" url="http://www.crunchyroll.com/hajime-no-ippo-the-fighting/episode-16-golden-eagle-649079" ]

Though boxing is limited to punching, that doesn’t mean that every boxer fights the same way. Undeniably, knowing the jab is an important fundamental, but numerous fighters express it in many ways based on their styles and reach. The jab serves the purpose of gauging the distance, creating rhythm and pace, and setting up a cross or uppercut. If any character is a master at using the jab, it has to be Miyata, who mixes it in with his fast footwork for sticking and moving. And there are others with advantageous reaches who use their jab from a more stationary position such as Mashiba with his flicker jab. As opposed to having his left-hand guarding his face, he hangs it around his midsection and throws his jabs like a whip from numerous angles. Due to the speed, range, and angles of his flicker jabs, it can really bust an opponent up. In order to combat these kinds of fighters, Ippo as an in-fighter needs to close the distance. For someone like Miyata who relies on footwork, Ippo just needs to force him up against the corner and/or ropes so he won’t move. For Mashiba, Ippo needs to work on his bobbing and weaving so he can slip those jabs, get on the inside, and crush his body before he can retract his jab.

    Training

    [sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="B00005OLV0" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]

While the Rocky movies highlight the training through montages, Hajime no Ippo goes into deep detail with Ippo’s training on how he develops his game plan, muscles, and cardio. Sometimes the training can be basic such as running a good number of miles, shadow boxing, working the mitts or heavy bag, and sparring. In other instances, it progresses into other forms of unorthodox methods that are really applicable in your own personal training whether it would be for combat sports or personal fitness. When Ippo fights Ozuma, a specialist in hooks, he uses the swinging bars at a local playground to work on his bobbing, weaving and ducking in order to counter his hooks with uppercuts. Or when he needs to work on his endurance and develop his lower body, he does squats in the pool. The water in the pool adds more resistance and requires more energy and develops the body as a whole.

    Weight Cutting

    [sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="crunchyroll" url="http://www.crunchyroll.com/hajime-no-ippo-the-fighting/episode-24-iron-fist-651067" ]

Like in real boxing, weigh-ins in Hajime no Ippo are conducted the night before the fight. The present system of weigh-ins allows a fighter to rehydrate and re-gain their energy before a fight and use their natural size as an advantage. So if a fighter weigh-ins in at 126 pounds, by fight night, he could weight between 130-144 after rehydration. Though Ippo fights at his natural walking weight, the remaining cast must cut weight. In the case of Takamura who naturally walks around 200 pounds, he has to lose 40 pounds of water weight and fat in order to make 160, Japan’s maximum weight class. Just like athletes in real life combat sports, Takamura cuts that weight off by sweating it off through hard training, sitting in a sauna, and almost starving himself. Because of the stress and lack of fluids in his brain, it also messes with his mental state, which is a real-life effect in weight cutting.

    Final Thoughts

Boxing is certainly a sport where you have to be in top physical and mental condition. It is by no means easy and it isn’t easy money until you make it to the top and have the right sponsors. You need to make sacrifices and when you get into the ring, you need to be at your best and leave it all in there and that is what Hajime no Ippo does best when it portrays boxing.

    Who it Caters to

As many of us already know, we live in a very results-driven society and so, if your performance somehow dwindles ever so slightly, you get reprimanded for it. Now of course this doesn’t apply everywhere in the world, but it’s certainly come to a point where people expect more out of you than before, which can put a lot of unnecessary tension on the mind. What does this have in common with We Happy Few? Well, the name of the game speaks for itself as you find yourself in a world that’s tormented and broken, as you embark on a journey to not only save a loved one but to help society cope with its problems. We Happy Few takes place in the psychedelic 60’s era in Britain, where the over-usage of a specific narcotic called “joy” has tampered with the minds of the people, leaving them in a state of euphoria and completely robbing them of the reality that’s happening. Anyone who loves a great story paired with exceptional voice acting and tactful humor will most definitely find We Happy Few to surely make you a very happy person indeed.

    What to Expect

When we turned on We Happy Few, the first thing that popped up into our minds was Bioshock, but with a more 60’s style to it and a lot more satire. Of course this perspective is quite subjective and may differ for others who pick up and play, but We Happy Few certainly takes inspiration from the series when it comes to overall gameplay and direction. The game’s universe is situated within an alternate timeline in which the events that took place during World War II, such as the Final Solution, happened earlier but still come with some very severe consequences for both the Nazis and Jews. The Germans invade Great Britain and gain control of the British Empire, while still raging war across much of Europe. In this epic first person action-adventure game you play the role of three characters, all of whom have their own unique story plot... but for the sake of not spoiling too much we’ll stick with Arthur as he’s the first character you begin with in the game. As you learn more about his past and the truth behind Wellington Wells, the plot starts to grow thicker as now you’re somewhat of an enemy to the ‘Wellies’, who wear happy faces to symbolize joy and well being. Since you decided to not take one of the joy pills, you start to see the truth that exists around you but are now considered a ‘downer’ by many, and need to take great care not to find yourself in harms way. We Happy Few’s open world allows you to explore the world of Wellington Wells, with roguelike elements in place which basically recreate the city each time you play. What was once there before is no longer there now, and so this creates a unique approach to how you play, encouraging you to use your survival tools to stay alive as long as possible. You’ll learn how to blend in with locals and how to break into homes to acquire specific items, while also using stealth mechanics to ensure you aren’t seen by the enemy as you infiltrate dangerous areas. We’ll dive more into the gameplay later on and provide more detail, but for now this is a small taste of what to expect.

    Gameplay

    Visuals

We mentioned earlier that We Happy Few took inspiration from the likes of Bioshock and you can clearly see that in the visual side of things. From the overall level and character designs to the look and feel of the environment, this is a gloomy title that makes excellent use of its theme to create a world that feels too real. As you walk around in the vast open world, you’re surrounded by 60’s style designs, from the very psychedelic wallpaper designs that were all the rage back then, to even the outfits that people wore during those times. For that reason, everything has a touch of realism which gives the game a lot more depth, immersing you even more. The lighting and effects are executed beautifully, which really accentuate the dystopian societal theme with its use of dark colors and dilapidated housing to further emphasize just how terrible things are. Character models have this very unique feel to them, with certain body parts exaggerated to create this sort of cartoony yet realistic combination, which is quite fitting when you consider the whole plot itself. People are pretty much living in a fantasy world getting high off joy, totally oblivious to the unseen truths that are clearly unfolding around them. Their eyes are jaded and bereft of life, while the Wellies are all fake smiles trying to mask their torment. However, there are times where clipping does happen and characters attack you through walls, and depending on your PC’s performance the game can slow down in frame rate due to all the sharp details. For this, we recommend to put your visual settings to high or medium for best performance and avoid any sort of mishaps along the way. For reference, our PC specs are NVIDIA GTX 970, Intel i7-3770S CPU @ 3.10ghz and 16gb of ram on a 64-bit OS.

    Sound, Music

We Happy Few not only shines in the visual category but most notably in its choice of music. Everything within the game is based around the 1960’s and so, a lot of what you hear as you wander around is music or even radio dialogue from that era. The attention to detail in this area is impressive and at times we had this V for Vendetta vibe along with A Clockwork Orange as we dived deeper into the plot. The voice acting in this game is superb and make great use of authentic British and Irish actors, which once again only add more authenticity. The witty remarks that you’re so used to with British satire are all there, even in the loading screens as you wait to play.

    Gameplay

Much like in Bioshock ,where you have to craft items in order to make weapons, heal and more, We Happy Few takes that same direction but does so in its own way. As you wander around the world scavenging for items, you’ll be able to create important tools such as lockpicks or healing bandages, both of which play a very important role in the game. You’ll be doing plenty of running around from house to house, grabbing whatever you can find in order to put all of the pieces together and find out why all of these people have gone mad. From personal journals to love letters, every piece of information you find has its own little clue that can guide you along the way, but also can confuse you at times. Survival is your primary focus and for much of the game you’ll be doing a lot of breaking and entering, knocking people out to take whatever important documents they have, but also hiding their bodies to ensure you don’t get caught. This is where the whole Bioshock thing comes in and it has to do with enemy AI: let’s say you try to create a distraction by throwing a glass bottle, the enemy will immediately respond to the sound made and run towards that direction, giving you time to sneak past them and move onto your next target safely. However, this is where an issue comes into play for We Happy Few. While the AI most of the time is quite adept to your movements and will alert their comrades to come and take you out, there were moments where the AI just didn’t seem to respond the way they should. An example is when we had to find the key to the bunker and to do so, we had to sneak into the General’s room to obtain it. The area is littered with soldiers and one false move can cost you everything… although we accidentally walked in front of the enemy but with no reaction at all. This didn’t occur quite often so it wasn’t anything bad, but just something to point out. You’ll need to also learn how to micromanage the items you carry since there’s limited storage, but as you progress through the game you can obtain an expansion pack. Another important factor to consider —and quite impressive— in We Happy Few is that you’ll need to also take care of your health. Exhaustion, thirst, and hunger play a very integral role in the game and as such, one must be very mindful while playing.
The more you run around you expend a lot of your energy, which can lead to thirst and fatigue. This means your running speed slows down and the stamina that you use to swing weapons around is depleted. The game does a great job of informing you by displaying icons on the upper left corner, so be mindful when playing. Eating contaminated food such as rancid stew or rotten potatoes can also have their negative effects as well, such as food poisoning, and can often lead to dire situations if not treated right away. Luckily, there are a lot of items you can scavenge for that can help you remove those ailments quickly, plus you can craft them as well. Resting also plays a major role as it restores your health and increases your stamina and strength for a period of time. Sleep well!

    Honey's Gameplay Consensus:

We Happy Few is honestly chock-full of things to do that we simply can’t go over all of it in one review. We’ll leave it up to you to create items, manage your skill points efficiently, and divise clever ways to outsmart the AI. This game is a must have for anyone who has dabbled with survival type titles, but also action-adventure enthusiasts. Of course, if you enjoyed the Bioshock series then We Happy Few is an absolute must because it will totally blow your mind in every way. The only major issues we ran into are the ones we stated earlier such as framerate issues, AI performance and some visual clipping; other than that, everything ran smoothly. This is kind of being nitpicky in a way but we would’ve loved if the subtitle option didn’t have a box around it during gameplay as it looked sort of unfinished in a way. Maybe a patch or something could fix that but again, just something we felt was a bit off.

    Honey's Pros:

    • Bioshock fans will fall in love with this game instantly.
    • Crafting items in game is easy and the UI is easy to navigate.
    • The combination of survival and action adventure really add a lot more depth to the gameplay.
    • Character animations are cartoony but still give off a realistic feel.
    • Loved the voice acting. Superb.
    • Visually beautiful.

    Honey's Cons:

    • AI at times weren’t very smart.
    • Enemies would sometimes attack us through walls.
    • Clipping issues.
    • Loading times felt longer than expected.

    Honey's Final Verdict:

We hope that you found our review of We Happy Few to be insightful, and provide you with enough information about the gameplay and features. We definitely recommend you pick up and try this game as it will provide you with an exciting experience. Who it Caters to

Those who hoped No Man’s Sky would evolve from its weak beginnings will be happy to hear that their prayers have been heard and answered. No Man’s Sky NEXT brings forth a slew of significant updates for all previous owners of No Man’s Sky. Multiplayer, more worlds to explore and a new third person mode alter No Man’s Sky into a game worthy of its large-scale epic nature. If you have been holding off on No Man’s Sky we don’t blame you. Maybe No Man’s Sky NEXT will be the game you’ve wanted and will finally convince you to pick it up.

    What to Expect

No Man’s Sky NEXT aims to deliver several HUGE updates to No Man’s Sky base game, some of which were anticipated when the game first released years ago. Multiplayer, some much needed space exploration concepts and bigger space battles have been placed in No Man’s Sky thanks to the NEXT update. No Man’s Sky NEXT now will wow players with a more robust resource system as well as the ability to build structures on planets for a means of respite from exploring and just to make your planets discovered feel more personal than before. Have you grown bored of No Man’s Sky and or want a reason to try this large-scale indie game out? Then go download—or purchase—No Man’s Sky NEXT and see what awaits you in the stars now.
    [ad_top2 class="mt40 mb40"]

    Story

For reasons unknown, you and your ship have crashed on an undefined planet. Gathering what wits you have, you decide to explore this planet for a means of fixing your ship. Your mission is simple space traveler. Return to the depths of space and explore this new galaxy in search of an unknown signal and coordination. Remember though, space isn’t a friendly place and while its filled with wonders and secrets to discover…it’s also filled with dangers both known and unknown…

    Gameplay

When No Man’s Sky was first announced, people couldn’t stop talking about how excited and hyped they were for it. Unfortunately, upon its release, No Man’s Sky was met with mixed to poor reviews due to the many things promised to gamers that were missing in its initial launch. Despite the lack of love for this space filled adventure title, the team at Hello Games continued to promise updates would come to fix the problems and bring forth the game people expected. After nearly two years, No Man’s Sky NEXT has been released as a free download that claims to bring with it the fixes this game needed so desperately. Does No Man’s Sky NEXT deliver? Let’s find out in our review No Man’s Sky NEXT for the Xbox One! Since two years have passed, we’ll give you a quick refresher course on what No Man’s Sky is all about. The main concept of No Man’s Sky is to explore randomly generated planets, find resources for things like crafting new ships and to sell and to get ever closer to discovering everything that this giant world has to offer. No Man’s Sky NEXT delivers several rather large updates in the form of multiplayer and new game additions that help No Man’s Sky in several ways. We’ll break down each of the major updates and talk about the pros/cons of each. Let’s begin with changes in base gameplay. With No Man’s Sky NEXT, the biggest changes gameplay wise is the addition of building bases anywhere, using them as teleporters—basically fast travel—and giving your planets a bit more of your own personal touches. No Man’s Sky NEXT also now can be played entirely in third person which adds a nice new visual perspective to the game and makes for some rather cool new ways to explore. There’s also a nice level of customization for your avatar to make some really personalized space explorers. There are also a ton—and we mean a ton—of different ways to gather resources and how you can craft new ones using items like refiners which gives No Man’s Sky NEXT just a bit more depth to its tedious resource system. The cons of the No Man’s Sky NEXT’s gameplay though is that ultimately, it hasn’t changed. We aren’t joking though, folks. Your main objective still is to gather resources for more advancements—like spaceships and armadas—but that gets old really fast. It’s tons of fun for a good several hours, but unless you’re into grinding heavy games then you’re going to wish there was more to do. While space battles help and the introduction of multiplayer keeps things from getting stale, if you’re into playing No Man’s Sky NEXT alone you’re going to lose enjoyment faster than your warp drives. Speaking about multiplayer, this is where No Man’s Sky NEXT truly shines in its long-awaited addition. Players can now finally hop into other worlds with friends/strangers to explore the galaxy together. Playing with friends is the true way to go though. If you do join a random game, sometimes it can take a while to find others and they may also kick you out if you aren’t doing anything for them, we had this happen several times to us personally. Though if you can grab some friends, No Man’s Sky NEXT is a lot of fun and multiplayer is a much-needed way to keep the lifespan going further than the original base game was able to bring. Lastly, No Man’s Sky NEXT does add some smaller features that we’d like to point out. There are a lot more planets/environments to see—at least in our minds—to find in No Man’s Sky now. Even your starting locations can offer up some rather harsh spaces for beginners that will test your survival skills quite early on. It’s small features like this that kept us from feeling bored when we decided to start No Man’s Sky NEXT from the ground up for this review. We also think older players should do the same to get a refreshers course on what to expect from some of the major updates to be found in NEXT.
    [ad_middle class="mt40 mb40"]

    Honey's Gameplay Consensus:

At its core, No Man’s Sky NEXT changes little of the base game but adds upon it in numerous ways that work quite well. The addition of multiplayer is where No Man’s Sky NEXT shines brightest giving players a world of endless possibilities to build together and explore cooperatively. We also enjoyed the stronger systems of building bases and giving players more to do then in the original vanilla version. Unfortunately, No Man’s Sky NEXT still suffers from tedious gameplay that has players mining for resources for hours upon hours with the only pay off being in the form of getting more ships, currency and upgrades. Your enjoyment of No Man’s Sky NEXT will be solely based on if you loved the original version but hated the bugs and lack of features it contained. Though for those who own No Man’s Sky already, NEXT is completely free and thus warrants a download just to see if maybe you will like what’s been changed in this huge update.

    Honey's Pros:

    • Third person mode brings the world a much-needed new perspective
    • Multiplayer is awesome and allows a ton of fun/adventure to be had with friends or strangers
    • More planets to explore and environments to roam around on make this already massive game way bigger than before
    • Free for all those who own the base game

    Honey's Cons:

    • Still suffers from tedious gameplay that begins to feel grind heavy
    • Some minor bugs still exist

    Honey's Final Verdict:

The beauty of No Man’s Sky NEXT is that this already big world has increased in scale and dimension offering up a lot of what players wanted to see originally. What’s even better is that being free means you can enjoy all these changes without having to shell out a dime. The base game of No Man’s Sky is also fairly cheap at around $30 which might give incentive to those who haven’t bought it yet to try NEXT out for themselves. Have you downloaded No Man’s Sky NEXT? Akari finds herself an uninvited visitor in Sophie’s home and starts to live there as a semi-overbearing roommate. Sophie may be a vampire, but she has never attacked a human. In this world known as Pandemonium, where angels who fell from heaven and became demons work, lives Her Excellency Beezlebub. Then there is the new employee Murin who is Beelzebub’s supporting aide. Murin thought that Beelzebub would be some wise, cold being, but rather she’s actually a laidback, frivolous young girl who loves giant fluffy things! While Murin is bewildered ad the difference between fantasy and reality, he gradually shortens the distance between himself and Beelzebub daily. The two are surrounded by clumsy, yet unique demons.
