Kouya no Kotobuki Hikoutai (The Magnificent Kotobuki) Introduction and Story

"Cute girls doing cute things" is a subgenre of traditionally slice-of-life anime revolving around a cast of young girls engaging in a range of adorable misadventures. Over the years, studios have defied the definition of "cute" by dropping a collection of waifus in tanks (Girls & Panzer) or literally transforming them into planes (Girly Air Force). The Magnificent Kotobuki rests somewhere in the middle. Set in an alternate reality combining elements from the Old West and World War II, Kouya no Kotobuki Hikoutai is named after a unit of personable female pilots typically employed to defend a shipment from pirates or similar enemies. In a dog eat dog world; only the strongest, wisest, and properly prepared live to fly another day. Armed with Hayabusa fighter jets, the Kotobuki Squadron take to the skies to engage in deadly dogfights. Outside of the battles, The Magnificent Kotobuki explores the everyday lives of these five girls. Camaraderie softens even the toughest of situations.

Why You Should Watch Kouya no Kotobuki Hikoutai (The Magnificent Kotobuki)
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="crunchyroll" url="https://www.crunchyroll.com/the-magnificent-kotobuki" ]

1. No I in Team

Prior to engaging in a dogfight, an average episode of the Magnificent Kotobuki slows things down to a crawl. The opening half of each chapter pushes the characters to the forefront and opts for an almost slice-of-life tone, as the girls engage in daily squabbles and attempt to make a living. As there is very little continuity between episodes, the focus is less on character development and more on world building. The Kotobuki Squadron are not heroes. They are merely mercenaries striving to survive in a cutthroat business dominated by men. Are the girls interesting? While they are largely defined by a handful of quirks rather than any significant depth, their banter demonstrates an endearing sense of intimacy and wit. They are more than the sum of their parts.

2. Thrill of Battle

Kouya no Kotobuki Hikoutai's success hinges on its aerial battles. With each chapter devoting half of its run-time to action, combined with the episodic storytelling, WAO World and GEMBA run the risk of losing their audience if the dogfights fail to consistently deliver the goods. The Magnificent Kotobuki's action undoubtedly ranks among the most visceral and exciting of Winter 2019! Framing the first proper battle scene from behind a cockpit, the pilot episode wastes little time in displaying the anime's confident handling of its dogfights. Beautifully directed to ensure the action always remains simple to comprehend, the girls truly came alive during these moments.

3. A New World

As frequently as high schools and medieval fantasy worlds serve as the backdrops in great series, an occasional change of pace is more than welcome. Technically, the Magnificent Kotobuki's barren wasteland is nothing too out of the ordinary. That being said, the series' decision to primarily set the action in the sky is an entirely different story! How often does an anime focus on realistic aerial battles? This is a whole new world! In an industry dominated by convention, the Magnificent Kotobuki is a refreshing, albeit flawed, singular experience.

[ad_middle class="mt40"]
Why You Should Skip Kouya no Kotobuki Hikoutai (The Magnificent Kotobuki)

1. A Work of Frankensteinian Proportions

The Magnificent Kotobuki cannot be faulted for refusing to think outside of the box. Primarily remembered for 2016's Berserk, GEMBA works with 3DCG animation. On the other hand, WAO World's portfolio mainly consists of traditional 2D animation. With such clashing styles, logic dictates one studio must go against type and attempt something new. Well, WAO World and GEMBA opted for another solution. The Magnificent Kotobuki combines 2D, 3D, and CG to forge an immediately off-putting aesthetic that only blends together satisfyingly in brief spurts. Thankfully, this strange mishmash of styles does not hurt the heavily computerized dogfights, unfortunately, the same cannot be said about the quieter moments. Approximately half of each episode focuses on the girls outside of their planes, but the decision to render the main characters in 3DCG greatly restricts their range of emotions. Bizarrely, many of the minor players are drawn in 2D and look far superior to the core cast members. If the anime was not constantly contrasting these two styles, the 3D may have been forgivable.

Final Thoughts

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="NEOGDS-320267" text="" url="" ]

For better or worse, Kouya no Kotobuki Hikoutai seeks to differentiate itself from the competition. During those instances when the unique setting and incredible dogfights eclipse the robotic animation, the anime is a sight to behold! Unfortunately, such moments should be more frequent. Did you agree with our review? Is the Magnificent Kotobuki worth watching? Please let us know in the comments below!

Sniper Elite V2 Remastered – Reveal Trailer

Who it Caters to

When you think about war video games, there is a large list of options ranging from the classic shooting games to some others more strategy-oriented. In this case, the Sniper Elite saga became famous because it combines the best of both worlds, with stories full of action, bullets, and blood, but also favoring a good strategy over just turning yourself in the reincarnation of John Rambo. In Sniper Elite V2 you —obviously— play as a sniper, so patience and good aiming are the keys to success. However, killing your objectives without being noticed is not always that easy, so trigger happy moments will be there too. Will you be able to change the course of WWII in the most silent way?

What to Expect

The original Sniper Elite V2 debuted back in 2012, and it remains as one of the best video games of the genre. In other war games, we tend to play as a killing machine with lots of weapons, but this game proves that your trusty sniper rifle is more than enough to keep you alive. In fact, this is a great game for those who always pick the sniper build in other action-adventure games, probably because it feels less cheesy if that's how Sniper Elite V2 is meant to be played. In this game, there are no zombies, no aliens, and no monsters. Your primary objective is to sabotage the Nazis and the masterminds behind the V2 rockets, so chapter after chapter you won't find epic boss battles but overly satisfying remote assassinations. All in all, Sniper Elite V2 is a rather short game, but trying to complete the game in a flawless fashion will definitely keep you busy for a while!
[ad_top2 class="mt40 mb40"]

Story

The plot is very simple and loosely based on real events: you play as Karl Fairburne, a soldier who must kill a group of Nazi scientists responsible for the V2 project. When WWII was about to end, the V2 technology gave the Germans the ability to launch ballistic rockets to London and other specific objectives, killing lots of people in a few minutes and breathing new life to Hitler and the Nazis. That's why in the Sniper Elite universe, Fairburne is tasked with killing Major General Hans von Eisenberg and his team, but he will also face the Soviets as you investigate more about the implications of the V2. Although the story is pretty straightforward, it's presented to you through mission briefing before every stage and a few animated scenes here and there, so it's kind of hard to keep up if you don't pay attention and take the time to assimilate everything that happens around you, especially character names and the locations you visit.

Visuals

Considering this is a remastered version, there's a strong yet logical emphasis on the graphics. Sniper Elite V2 Remastered brags about better textures, models, and the possibility of playing with the always glorious 4K+HDR setup, so newcomers may find it like the best opportunity to jump into this classic. It's true that it was never intended to be a photorealistic game, but having better graphics can't hurt, and it also adds depth to the action.
One of the best parts of Sniper Elite V2 is watching the X-Ray animations after killing someone, and this remastered version makes it feel awesome. That's probably the best moment to take advantage of the brand new Photo Mode, playing with the lighting, filters, and angles until you find the sweet spot. Maybe the only downside is that a lot of models (of both buildings and enemies) feel repetitive, but that's something you can easily overlook if you're used to the shooter genre.

Sound, Music

Sniper Elite V2 Remastered's soundtrack is not the best or the most original, but it surely helps to bring the game to life. While the music may feel like a mere background detail at times, it's actually the most important cue in terms of gameplay: you'll hear one form of music when everything's OK, and another when you're under attack or being searched; also, you can use enemy voices to know when and where to move without being noticed, and when under attack, your sense of hearing will start to fade out to make you feel on the verge of death. The problem is that every time you shoot, the music stops so you can hear the bullet travel to the target, turning a killing streak into a collection of unconnected music and sound effects. In terms of voice acting, mission briefs feel too stiff and dialogues are kind of awkward... but we can't expect great interpretations when it comes to soldiers and scientists, right?

Gameplay

There are 3 difficulty levels in Sniper Elite V2, but you can also play with customized settings if you feel like it. Other than having more enemies, or just making them more intelligent, the extra level of difficulty is mastering physics if you play in the most realistic conditions. With 5 people in your kill list, missions are pretty simple: you open your way to a high point, you kill your objective, and then you get out of the place as fast as you can. However, stealth is the key because you don't want people hearing your gunshots, and leaving a trail full of dead bodies is not helping you either. With a handful of weapons to choose from, we find ourselves using our sniper rifles and suppressed Welrod the most, but you can also throw grenades, or even plant dynamite and mines (both land mines and trip mines). At first, you will be tempted to play the same section time after time until you get it right and kill everyone without being noticed, but then you won't care about it and going full Rambo will be OK too! That's because every time they kill you, you can go back a few minutes to the last checkpoint and try again, so there's almost no frustration in dying. In addition to that, there's no health bar that indicates your HP status, so it's all about running away from enemy fire and once you feel safe, going all in again.
This newly remastered version also offers you the chance to play as other characters too, so if you get bored of Karl, you can switch to other characters in no time. To add more replay value, every stage has hidden gold bars and wine bottles to collect, also encouraging to try new routes every time you replay them. The problem here is that stages are rather linear, so you can't open doors or interact with the environment. That means that if you find a suspicious path, there's a huge chance there's gold or wine at the end of the line...

Honey's Gameplay Consensus:

To be honest, Sniper Elite V2's gameplay is not for everyone, but you definitely need to try this game and see for yourself! It's great for those who need a break between rounds in Battle Royale games, or people who always go for the sniper/stealth route in action games. While the easiest difficulty is too easy, playing on Sniper Elite (the hardest) difficulty is quite the challenge, forcing you to use all your resources available to get out alive. As we said earlier, Sniper Elite V2 may feel too short once you complete the main campaign, but it's worth every coin if you also consider the remastered version includes all DLC and online modes. What's deadlier than a sniper? More snipers!

Honey's Pros:

  • This looks way better than the original version, and 4K+HDR plays awesome.
  • All DLC included!
  • When you get bored of head-shooting the AI, you can always play online for more head-shooting sessions.

Honey's Cons:

  • Since the gameplay remains intact, Sniper Elite V2’s downsides are still there.

Honey's Final Verdict:

We're sure that those who already own Sniper Elite V2 will consider paying a few bucks and upgrading to the remastered version, but we also encourage those who never got the chance to play it to pick up Sniper Elite V2 Remastered and feel the satisfaction of killing without being seen. The visual upgrade is worth the try! Let us know in the comment section what's your experience with Sniper Elite V2, and look forward to Sniper Elite V2 Remastered once it launches on May 14th. The newest “00” agent to join MI6, a secret British intelligence organization, is James Bond. His first mission involves tracking and shutting down the terrorist funding operations of one, Le Chiffre. His mission takes him to the gambling resorts of Madagascar where he enters into a high stakes poker table to ensure Le Chiffre doesn’t get the money he seeks and that he and his associates are shut down for good. Carrying a license to kill also carries with it various risks and stresses. In the spirit of the movie and the 007 franchise, we would like to recommend two anime that bring the same sort of pressure as a high stakes poker tournament with spies and terrorists.

Like Casino Royale? Watch Kakegurui (Kakegurui: Compulsive Gambler)

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="B073569SQW" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes="12" aired="July 2017 – September 2017" post_id=""]

Hyakkaou Private Academy is home to sons and daughters of some of the wealthiest and most powerful families in the world. In regular schools, students learn math, science, literature, and physical education, but enrollment at Hyakkaou Private Academy teaches lessons through gambling, where money and even people’s futures are put on the line in games to teach these wealthy heirs the art of strategy and deception. Among the most talented and strange is one Yumeko Jabami who doesn’t simply play for money but for the thrill of the game.

Major Similarities Between Casino Royale and Kakegurui (Kakegurui: Compulsive Gambler)

1. Gambling

As the plot of the show entails, Kakgurui involves gambling and a lot of it. In Casino Royale we see James Bond play classic games such as Texas hold'em or Blackjack. Kakegurui shows the classic games as well as fun new innovative forms of gambling introduced by the student council who rule the school and gambling operations. The creativity of the game is only limited by the sadistic imagination of the players. Nothing is off limits.

2. Torture

What is a little fun without a little danger? Just like in every James Bond film we can’t expect everything to go swimmingly, plans go awry, heroes get caught, or rules of games change, so too do things become a bit dangerous in Kakegurui. We would not fault you if you thought a good portion of the games in the series were simply one form of torture or another. While there is no scene in the anime that compares to James Bond being tied to a chair and beaten, we believe risking shooting yourself in the head or ripping out your nails if you lose a game, is in the same realm of cringe. The physical torture may not play as large a role as the sheer mental anguish and pain many characters face in their games of poker.

Like Casino Royale? Watch Death Parade

[sourceLink asin="B01CO5TOHI" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes="12" aired="January 2015 – March 2015" post_id=""]

Imagine for a moment, all is dark and then, suddenly, you find yourself stepping out of an elevator into a bar and lounge area where you are greeted by a bartender. He introduces himself as Decim, arbiter of Quindecim, the room you now stand in. You will be sent to compete in a death-defying challenge to save your own life but unbeknownst to you, you and your competitor, another person, are both already dead. What you are fighting for is not your life but your soul, teetering between the realm of reincarnation and total oblivion. This is the challenge all souls must face when they die.

Major Similarities Between Casino Royale and Death Parade

1. High Stakes

The high stakes of Casino Royale see James Bond attempting to shut down the funding of terrorist dealings. Not succeeding in his mission means putting countless lives at stake. In Death Parade, the stakes could not be higher with people putting their literal souls on the line with the winner being reincarnated and the loser entering complete and utter oblivion. Just as the high stakes of Casino Royale made for some wonderfully suspenseful and tense moments on screen, so too does Death Parade.

2. Mind Games

In a regular game of poker, mind games always play some sort of role, often in the form of bluffing to throw your opponent off their game, having them think you have a better or worse hand than you actually do. Such is the case in Casino Royale with the final games of poker that James Bond plays, attempting to bluff Le Chiffre into making a mistake. Bluffing won’t work in Death Parade. The mind games in Quindecim are of a different nature. From the very beginning, the two players who enter Quindecim don’t even know they are already dead, only that they are in a life-threatening situation where their lives are on the line. As the dangerous games progress, the arbiters attempt to create extreme circumstances that show the true colour of human beings under pressure, often uncovering memories from their past life that led to their death. As the pressure rises, the truth becomes unveiled, and what is left is a judgement of the real strength and weakness these players have shown in game and in life.

Angel of Death

So ummm what? I mean I knew it was coming, but to see it play out like that was a bit odd. So we now know who has basically been pulling the strings behind everything. It’s interesting but let’s talk about this boring match beforehand. The season started out powerful with a gross finger-chopping game. It was weird and yet entertaining a la nail game from the first season. As the season has moved on, the intensity from the best has really ebbed and it took me till this bet to realize how cheap they are becoming. Unless the finale really hits it out of the park, I think we are going to see it flatline at the end. Shame, but so anyway, all of the big gamblers are going head to head from this season save for Itsuki, Kaede, and Kirari. I love how the series keeps bringing back Midari to have her fawn over Yumeko who in turn, ignores her. It’s funny. So we have this bet which is going head to head against these competitors…or is it? Batsubami reveals that she is betting too, okay I can forgive that. But then the whole thing where the people in the other room who have been defeated are gambling too? Bzzt. This is boring. Then Yumeko does her thing to provoke Batsubami and we get an about face from them as they go all in. Not bad, but like… oh okay… So she basically looks like Leanne Sidhe from the Megami Tensei/Persona series with tattoos on her hand. If you don’t know, Google her. Blegh this is becoming a subpar ending. Whatever. I hope it gets interesting. Bring back Yumemi!

Saving Each Other

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="Crunchyroll" url="https://www.crunchyroll.com/my-roommate-is-a-cat" ]

I think this week’s episode of Doukyonin wa Hiza, Tokidoki, Atama no Ue. was a great way to tie things up together, although that last line felt a little out of place (especially since I don’t feel like Haru is ever on Subaru’s head). Anyway, it was a really sweet episode where Subaru is stranded due to the typhoon. Then Haru, worried about Subaru not coming home, runs out of the house as soon as there is an opening. Haru spends her time looking for Subaru while thinking of her own siblings who were outside in a typhoon in the past scared and cold. Meanwhile, Subaru somehow got back to the city somehow and started the hunt for Haru to make sure she’s OK. It’s so sweet. The whole episode centers around Haru and Subaru’s attempts to save each other. They are both well meaning and want to save each other from the typhoon. It’s cute and in the end, it’s nice to see that they end up together. It sums everything up really nicely about the relationship Subaru and Haru have together in the entirety of Doukyonin wa Hiza, Tokidoki, Atama no Ue. They spend the whole time saving each other from the troubles they both dealt with. While this anime feels a lot like a slice of life anime that’s rather casual, a lot of time, it’s about the real problems we all face in real life and how we get through them with our relationships.

I’ve seen weirder trash on MTV

Rod Locksley
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" bookwalker_id="" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]

While the first 3 episodes of Carole & Tuesday show us how they grow in the music industry, little by little, the 4th is all about fraud. In a world so advanced, who would have thought about an IA scamming people to drink beer and watch anime for free? The introverted Roddy is our new MVP now, but all his generous acts mean nothing if Carole & Tuesday's first music video ends up the way it did. We have to admit that the original idea was not very clear, but it was an acceptable plan: the girls dancing and singing, Gus acting as a weird zombie, Roddy pulling some shapes... but no, according to IDEA (the AI the group hired), that would've been so boring. And we can't blame it, because the actual outcome is way better!! We have some awkward shots, random people staring at the camera, a robot playing with some special edition Gundam-like action figures, and a final scene with a luxury car exploding in front of a discouraged Roddy. What's not to love?! Again, we got mixed feelings considering all Roddy did for the girls, but maybe a weird music video will make Carole & Tuesday stand out? Just make sure to compensate him once you reach the top, girls! If you have not done it yet, go watch this episode and just marvel at the final version of "Hold Me Now" by Carole & Tuesday. It's showtime!

Filo Battle!

Aaron
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="Crunchyroll" url="https://www.crunchyroll.com/the-rising-of-the-shield-hero" ]

Let’s realize something interesting about Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari. So far, Raphtalia has done the most fighting of Naofumi’s party with Filo being a close second. Episode 17 of Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari changes things up though with Filo having the center stage fighting against the queen of all Filolial. The queen pulls a quick--and sneaky--stunt by taking Melty hostage leaving Naofumi with no other option but to submit to the queen’s request with a one on one duel with Filo. However, the queen pulls an even more crazed stunt by having both Filolial beings stay in human form! Naofumi does attempt a cheap move by trying to rescue Melty but of course the queen was ready and makes a quick showing of her magical powers by knocking him straight into the wall! Filo fights with all her heart but seems to be no match for the extremely old queen yet with some encouragement from Naofumi, Filo is able to rise above her lack of power and still make a solid blow on the queen making the latter submit to Filo. The queen surprises Naofumi’s party at the end of the episode with her saying this was all a test to crown Filo as her future successor but also to test her resolve. With not one but several warnings, the queen tells Naofumi that the heroes need to ban together and stop this petty feud between them lest the world will suffer dire consequences. Overall, this week’s episode of Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari was a simple one but it led to a possible future where Naofumi can befriend the other heroes and possibly change their future fate if they don’t heed the Filolial queen’s warning.

Those Who Have Passed

Tanjirou has defeated the mutated demon, allowing both the demon and his victims to finally rest in peace. With only a few survivors from the trial, Tanjirou and the others select the ore to craft their own unique swords. Though he is reunited with Nezuko and Urokodaki, Tanjirou soon receives his new blade and his first mission. This episode served as a bit of a break after the battle with the mutated demon, yet it still managed to hold our attention from start to finish. It ended up being more emotional than expected, as the defeat of the demon allowed us to see the human lying beneath centuries of hatred. Tanjirou is one of the best protagonists we have seen in a long time, as he lives with the duality of hating demons for killing his family, while also showing kindness to them in praying for them after death and recognizing their humanity within. Of course, this is probably thanks to Nezuko’s current predicament, but we do believe that Tanjirou is just an especially kind person as well. We were also emotional after the reunion with Nezuko and Urokodaki. Seeing Urokodaki shed tears upon having a pupil actually return from the trials made us realize how much he cares about Tanjirou, and indeed, how much he cared about all his pupils who had passed on during the Final Selection. Despite supposedly being a more relaxed episode, we are left with a number of questions, thanks in part to the introduction of more characters. As always, next week cannot come soon enough for this series!

[balloon_speech align="left" text="This episode has so many emotions packed in it! I can’t believe it made me sad for both Urokodaki’s students AND the demon’s death!" image="bee-sad"]

A Rice Ball Can Belong in a Fruit Basket

Tohru’s time living with the Sohmas has been one misadventure after the next, but she’s grown to love her new family and is looking forward to getting to know them better. That is, until her biological family demands her return now that their house renovations are complete. Tohru reluctantly complies, trying to stay strong even as they treat her like garbage right to her face. Tearfully, she accepts her lot in life... until her feeble grandfather stands up for her and Yuki and Kyo burst in to take her home. This is the moment where we learn what “fruits basket” actually means. It’s a childhood game where Tohru’s classmates purposefully left her out by labeling her as a rice ball instead of a fruit who could take part in the game. Tohru grew up believing that she would always be an outcast because of who she was, just like how a rice ball doesn’t belong in a fruit basket. But now that she’s found a family of other outcasts who actually understand and respect her, she realizes that she’s worthy of love after all. I love this episode because it gives viewers a taste of Fruits Basket’s true complexity. It’s not just any old romance anime – it’s a heartwarming tale about rising above the darkness of your past and creating a new life with people who truly love you. Yuki, Kyo, and Tohru deserve to be together because they build each other up, unlike their biological families who have only ever torn them down. When the two boys swooped in to rescue Tohru, I grinned from ear to ear because I knew that it was the beginning of a long journey that will make them all better people by the end.

[balloon_speech align="left" text="Also, I finally figured out that the series is still set in 1999! Otherwise, Yuki could’ve just used a GPS to find Tohru’s house and saved them all a lot of trouble." image="honey-detective"]

Lover’s Misfortune

After hearing rumors about a psychic, Nanako and Eiji decide to get their fortune told. The psychic is a girl named Tao Nanakai, who gives them a reading to see how compatible they are as friends. Unfortunately, the reading doesn't go well and Tao says they are completely incompatible. In response to her reading, Eiji gives an impassioned speech about how it doesn't matter and how him and Nakano don't need a silly fortune to decide their future. Tao offers to give them another reading using tarot cards, but after seeing Eiji's passionate protest to the original reading Nanako decides that is enough for her to know how Eiji really feels. There was so much to like about this episode, but this scene really gave us so many great things. We get introduced to the last main girl Tao, and everything about is fantastic, from her unique design to her odd personality quirks. Then we also get some amazing cute moments between Nanako and Eiji that end with a blushing Nakano. For such a short and simple anime, every episode has been filled to the brim with great character moments and a really enjoyable story. Senryuu Shoujo is just too cute and wholesome for me to handle.

Psycho-Pass Explained!

[ad_top1 class="mb40"]
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="crunchyroll" url="https://www.crunchyroll.com/pt-br/group/Psycho-Pass_Analyze" ]

In a seemingly utopic Japan set in the 22nd century, the young and intelligent Akane Tsunemori starts off on her career path as she decides to pursue work in the police force to help keep the peace overseen by the Sybil System which searches for psychological instability and evil intent amongst the populous. As part of her job, she works alongside Shinya Kougami, an enforcer and latent criminal. As she continues to delve deeper into the darker side of her society, what sorts of mysteries will she uncover about the system she seeks to protect and can she survive long enough to learn the truth? There is a lot of tech and interesting sci-fi worldbuilding in Psycho-Pass which we will explain for those who may have watched it and missed a couple of things, or for those who haven’t seen it and are considering checking it out.

The Sybil System & Psycho-Pass

The Sybil System is akin to Big Brother in George Orwell’s 1984, in so far as to say it monitors the everyday life of Japanese citizens, measuring their psycho-pass levels (crime coefficient), as well as managing the Public Safety Bureau and the Criminal Investigation Department. The Psycho-Pass is in reference to each individual citizen’s psychological stability and latent criminal behaviour. Grading with a colour hue, it seeks out citizens who pose a future threat to peace in society by looking at how likely individuals are to commit crimes or become psychologically unbalanced. Individuals whose Psycho-Pass becomes clouded are labeled latent criminals and are treated as such. They are brought tracked down and brought in by law enforcement.

Society & Government

As the anime takes place in future Japan, it shares the appearance of the same form of governing democracy that Japan has. The truth of the matter is that as part of the Sybil System’s duties, it is in charge of designating who is to fulfill which roles in society, including the roles of bureaucrats, thereby taking away democratic choice. Japan maintains a closed-border system so as not to overtax the Sybil System with the monitoring of potential latent criminals who pose a threat or diplomatic disturbance. As a result of the work that the Sybil System and the Ministry of Welfare’s Public Safety Bureau(MWPSB) pursue, crime is kept under control and each individual is designated a role in society, making sure that each individual is utilized in some manner. Almost like a machine, all the cogs have a purpose and when they deviate from the norm, they are corrected.

Criminal Investigation Department

The Criminal Investigation Department falls under the umbrella of the MWPSB and as a result, it is also controlled by the Sybil System. The Criminal Investigation Department is tasked with the handling of criminal activity and hunting down those with a clouded Psycho-Pass as determined by the Sybil System. The department is made up of three divisions, each with its own inspectors, enforcers, and analysts. The inspectors are the brains of criminal investigations. One must be of sound mind and high intelligence to be an inspector as part of their job is to oversee and take control of the enforcers and lead investigations. Enforcers are latent criminals released for the sole purpose of hunting down other latent criminals; they must follow every order given by the Inspectors in charge. Analysts are essentially the staff who gather data on crime coefficients from each and every latent criminal that goes through the department. Members of the Criminal Investigation Department are equipped with special firing arms that require identification by the holder and will only fire when aimed at a latent criminal. The weapon has the ability to paralyze or kill its target.

Antagonists

The prime antagonist of the anime is Shogo Makishima. He is a white-haired individual with an asymptomatic psycho-pass. Essentially making it so that he is completely unfazed by the regular stresses and emotions that average citizens face. He is an incredibly intelligent individual and an adversary to Shinya Kougami, the enforcer under Akane Tsunemori. He wishes to combat the Sybil system and all it stands for, believing it holds human beings back. Despite his ability to kill and commit various other crimes, his psycho-pass never changes.

Who it Caters to

It has been a while since we’ve seen how the wolf brothers—Sean and Daniel Diaz—have been doing. Thankfully, that excruciatingly long wait has finally come to an end. Life is Strange 2: Episode 3—dubbed Wastelands—has arrived and you can bet we were ready to dive into their story once again. However, what we didn’t anticipate was the experience that waited for us. Was that experience something we truly enjoyed or did Life is Strange 2: Episode 3 fail to deliver what we wanted? Find out in our full review below!

What to Expect

Life is Strange 2: Episode 3 returns us to our wolf brothers continuing their long adventure towards Mexico. After meeting the traveling duo of Cassidy and Finn, the brothers end up working in a very illegal farm. Once more, players will need to make choices that dramatically change the narrative. As Sean endures his job as being a guardian and brother to Daniel, his actions henceforth will change their relationship radically. Be prepared for several moments that will test the brother’s relationship in ways no one could have predicted...
[ad_top2 class="mt40 mb40"]

Story

Sean and Daniel Diaz have been on the run from the law for now months. While they have found temporary homes—some better than others—their ultimate still resides in Puerto Lobos somewhere in Mexico. With no income to reach their finale though, Sean ends up joining Cassidy and Finn, two hippie-like individuals who offer him a job working at an illegal weed distribution location. As Sean gets closer to these two new allies, Daniel begins to feel abandoned and ultimately it begins to create a rift in the Diaz family. What’s worse is that not all of Sean’s new friends are good influences towards Daniel. Will Sean be able to keep his brother safe from this dangerous environment or will the wolf brothers end up in a situation that will tear them apart...permanently?

Gameplay

By now, most of you know already what to expect in Life is Strange 2, With this third episode—Wasteland—the gameplay hasn’t changed much. Players still assume the role of Sean Diaz the older brother who must care for his younger brother—Daniel Diaz—who has a strange power that has led them to go on the run. Taking place several months after episode 2—which is how long this episode took to release—players will notice the wolf brothers have a big issue between them. Sean having joined this new hippie crowd of wanders has caused Daniel to feel left alone and has ruined their already strained relationship. Yet, things get worse when the brothers end up making some tough choices that cause that rift to become a canyon. Find out what we mean as we review Life is Strange 2: Episode 3 for the PS4. Minor spoilers for previous episodes may follow, so play the first two before going any further. In the last episode, Sean and Daniel ended up leaving their grandparents home due to the police relocating them once again. Depending on your actions our little wannabe super hero either got hurt or made it through unscathed. Despite your actions though, the brothers reunited with Cassidy and Finn—two characters introduced in episode 2—and took a train out of town. In episode 3 of Life is Strange 2, the Diaz brothers are now working for a man named Merrill who in turn works for some shady drug organization. Sean has bonded with these new travelers but Daniel has fallen to the wayside in the process, a scene in the beginning of the episode shows that this lonely feeling was experienced by Daniel prior to the events of the game’s actual start. From here though, every choice—and there are a lot more of them in episode 3—makes for some dramatic consequences both good and bad. What we loved about Life is Strange 2: Episode 3 is the gravity of choices in comparison to previous chapters. While there were some choices that made for some interesting end results, the choices in episode 3 have a stronger weight to them. Without spoiling it, people will die depending on your actions and some characters might change their sexuality and loyalty as well. Life is Strange 2 has proven that choices matter greatly in the series so far, but episode 3 really turns the dial up to a 1000. We replayed several choices just to see that they really did cause things to play out dramatically different than before. If there were any complaints for this episode though it would be in the few moments that felt like busy work with no actual end benefit. There is one mini game where Sean is forced to cut weed buds and while there is meaningful purpose behind it—in terms of narrative—the actions themselves are boring and feel really like work. The same can be said of a few chores that must be done in the camp the wolf brothers reside in. These issues only happen a few times and aren’t so annoying we felt it degraded the experience, but they almost worried us for the rest of the chapter as they happen quite early in. We really hope episode 4 and 5 of Life is Strange 2 will focus on mini-games that have an actual reason behind them. That or change the drawing system as it still remains quite boring. We wish to end the gameplay section of our review on a good note though and that would be the visuals in episode 3. Simply put, Life is Strange 2: Episode 3 looked incredible. Clearly developer Dontnod Entertainment put some extra work into the visuals as the forest itself looked extremely impressive. Even character models had a sharper look and we loved how Sean and Daniel clearly look like they’ve been homeless for months. Sean’s hair and clothes have become worn down with his growing and his clothes becoming beaten. It’s an extremely impressive showing that makes these months in between episodes feel as if time for the wolf brothers moves on even when our games are off. The music also is quite strong in episode 3 and we would love to have a soundtrack soon.
[ad_middle class="mt40 mb40"]

Honey's Gameplay Consensus:

Life is Strange 2: Episode 3 was a real treat to play. We absolutely loved how choices in this episode felt impactful and meaningful in comparison to the previous two episodes. Even little actions like not talking to a character or choosing to spend time with Daniel felt important as the story moves onward. While we still don’t care for some of the mini-games thrown in, even these moments immersed us in Sean and Daniel’s world. Life is Strange 2: Episode 3 is one of the best episodes so far and fans will thoroughly enjoy this next chapter. Just be prepared to gasp a few times as your choices end up making ripples that might alter the wolf brother’s final fate.

Honey's Pros:

  • Choices this time around truly feel more powerful than we’ve seen so far
  • Visual set pieces look incredible
  • Several large decisions will no doubt affect the later episodes
  • As always, wonderful narrative with impressive voice work

Honey's Cons:

  • Mini-games still feel arbitrary at times
  • The long wait for the next episode is going to kill us (not really a con)

Honey's Final Verdict:

Another three-month wait is in store for us fans of Life is Strange 2, but to be honest folks, we love the wait. Dontnod entertainment has proven they can do episodic games right as with Life is Strange 1 and now this second volume. In our minds, we will wonder where the brothers are going in the fourth episode and will long be anticipating to see if our thoughts match up with the end result. Are you enjoying Life is Strange 2: Episode 3 and the series so far? Comment below to let us know what you love or hate about the series. What Constitutes a Magical Girl/Mahou Shoujo Anime? [Definition; Meaning]

$

[ad_top1 class="mb40"]
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="2019CL-145" text="" url="" ]

Oddly enough, the Magical Girl genre owes its origin to American television. The makers of the first two works to claim the name, Mahoutsukai Sally and Himitsu no Akko-Chan, mention the show Bewitched as a source of inspiration. The earliest examples were, as the name suggests, primarily aimed towards younger female audiences. While scenes of overt violence weren’t shied away from, the primary focus wasn’t placed on fighting but rather female empowerment, mysticism, and feel-good social elements. The action-heavy direction, complex conflict structure, and deep thematic exploration that has come to define more recent magical girl titles wouldn’t surface until much later with the release of titles like Mamono Hunter Yohiko. The latter breed of story quickly outstripped the classics, taking cues from the sentai and shounen genres in order to acquire the attention of older viewers and those unfortunate enough to be born with a Y chromosome. As we close in towards the present day, Magical Girl shows get bolder in their assertion that female characters can bear both emotional strength and considerable combat prowess without sacrificing their femininity or being relegated to minor “support” roles. It can easily be said that the genre took a large part in expanding the importance of well developed female characters across the other genres of anime and even mediums foreign to Japan. The unique brand of innocence and wonder provided by magical girl anime oftentimes delivers the journey through an idyllic lens that emphasizes the hopeful brilliance of youth. Gaining popularity, however, are works that take the very same concept in a more cynical direction, shattering childish dreams and expectations against the harsh realities of their worlds in order to push tragic narratives that represent the disillusionment that comes with adulthood. Despite this mutation of themes and inspiration from more action-oriented genres, you'll find that nearly every magical girl anime will exemplify one or all of the aspects common to a coming-of-age story: companionship, perseverance, and growth. If you’ll be so kind as to don your mystical raiments and prepare your most powerful spells, we’ll take a look at a few titles and muse about how they express these aspects.

[ad_top2 class="mt40"]

Companionship

In a magical girl’s most troubling hour, her saviour is neither her own power or the force of providence that granted it, but her friends. This is the aspect that has seen the least amount of change as the genre has evolved. Friendships in magical girl anime are generally more open-hearted affairs where even competitive relationships have a soft, sweet core. It is for this reason that magical girl titles are frequently perceived to tip towards the shoujo-ai genre, warranted or not.

Puchi Pri*Yucie (Petite Princess Yucie)

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="B0000AZSKD" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 26 " aired=" September 2002 - March 2003 "]

With heavy inspiration taken from the premise of their popular game Princess Maker, Puchi Pri*Yucie is an account of the titular girl’s trials and the deep bonds she forged with those who shared them. Adopted by a knight as a baby, Yucie was brought up in a quiet countryside home her father chose as his place of retirement. Unfortunately for her, she’s afflicted by a strange curse of origins as nebulous as her birth that prevents her body from growing past the age of ten. Her only hope at a cure lies in proving herself worthy of The Eternal Tiara, a magical item capable of granting wishes and the legendary title of Platinum Princess. Puchi Pri* Yucie is closer to the classical magical girl titles of yore, the lion’s share of its narrative weight is delivered by personal connections with the firm backing of childlike innocence tempered yet unconquered by experience. Though the quest for the tiara and the wish it grants is a zero-sum game, idealism and a sense of respect between all five candidates shines true. Yucie’s cheerful, affectionate nature proves to be infectious, allowing her to win over the girls that would otherwise be her bitter rivals. Yucie’s circle of friends is one of those rare existences that can finish a round of Monopoly without broken hearts nor broken bones. Not an easy feat.

Perseverance

It is all too common for a magical girl’s wings to come with or as a result of shackles. For more allegorical works, the wands, candy-colored lasers, and cool dresses serve as physical representations of a magical girl’s battle against their circumstances. Unlike the shounen and sentai genres where villains are taken by vices or critical tears in the human condition, magical girl villains are often esoteric representations of the same that encroach upon the real world. The difference is between fighting evil people and fighting evil as a concept. This nature results in most magical girls dealing with a great deal of emotional weight as they challenge the full brunt of facets about humanity that make you say “ick!”.

Mahou Shoujou Madoka Magica (Puella Magi Madoka Magica)

[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" January 2011 - April 2011 "]

Mahou Shoujou Madoka Magica is the brainchild of Gen Urobuchi, famous for his bittersweet and downright harsh takes on storytelling. He made the anime into the go-to example of the more cynical side of the genre. In his world, to be a magical girl is to take on the mantle of humanity’s hope and the duty of opposing witches, monsters that embody despair. If left unchecked, witches hold the potential to harm and even kill the average civilian. They are also the only source of grief seeds, objects used to cleanse a magical girl’s soul gem, the source of their power which they’ll lose permanently if allowed to darken completely. Not only do witches pose a mortal danger to any magical girl, but they are also a finite resource, creating a system that is both competitive and blatantly unfair to children enlisted to become magical girls. While growth and companionship are themes that see heavy use, the manner in which each member of the main cast struggles in their own way against the day-to-day situation imposed upon them is intertwined with their battle against their own despair with their soul gems serving as a literal gauge to measure their mental well being and success. In order to survive, the girls arguably need to be made of sterner stuff than those that star the titles above and below, they latch onto their ideals with a dogged sense of desperation to help them weather an unending torrent of negativity.

Growth

The conditions surrounding a young girl’s ascension commonly forces or at least facilitates a rapid period of change. What with the disruption of their ordinary lives and the addition of responsibilities that are almost certainly beyond any that a magical initiate has had to handle before.

Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon (Sailor Moon)

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="B0007IO0LU" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 46 " aired=" March 1992 - February 1993 "]

It’s not likely that you’ll need a general rundown for this one. Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon is easily the most recognizable magical girl anime. It’s commonly regarded as the herald of the genre’s modern age. Beyond its initial running, the show enjoys a myriad of spinoffs, remasters, and merchandise campaigns as well as a firm place in pop-culture. At this point, it’d be easier to count the number of people alive in America and Japan that haven’t heard of the title. For the sake of completion, we’ll remind you that the anime follows one Usagi Tsukino, an average, if otherwise dorky, middle schooler that has the destiny of defending the Earth against threats that would seek its ruination thrust onto her by the magical cat Luna who serves as her steward. As she gains experience and comrades in the form of other “Sailor Senshi” who draw their power in the name of other celestial bodies, as well as the mysterious Tuxedo Mask, Usagi buds into a fine leader more than capable of standing up to forces of evil. Perhaps due to its long runtime, Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon exhibits the pillar of growth to a truly remarkable degree. When Usagi first hears of her fated duty, she’s just two winks short of a frightened mess uncertain of her own place in the world, let alone her chances of ever saving it. However, through her honest, hard-working nature and the support of her friends, she develops a mature side that doesn’t shirk away from any challenge.

Final Thoughts

Hopefully, this brief look into the magical girl genre has either piqued or reaffirmed your interest in a historical, transformative, and commonly underestimated corner of the industry. If anything, we at Honey’s Anime will be satisfied if we’ve convinced you to hold your local magical girl in the same high regard as the Hokage-Pirate-Sorcerer-Overlord currently in office. In any case, if you have your own insights to share about the core principles of magical girl anime, we’d love to hear your thoughts!

Toaru Majutsu no Index III Introduction and Story

After 7 years of waiting since the end of Index II, J.C.Staff finally gave us the next chapter of the story of Touma Kamijou, Index, and many others that famously begins “when science and magic meet”. As a continuation of a rather complicated tale with a huge cast of characters, it’s expected (and basically required) that you’re already familiar with the story and cast to enjoy Index III. Index III begins by focusing on the Dark Side of Academy City where some of the secret groups established to fight enemies of the city and keep an eye on its officials, namely GROUP (Etzali, Tsuchimikado Motoharu, Accelerator, and Musujime Awaki) and ITEM (Mugino Shizuri, Takitsubo Rikou, Kinuhata Saiai, and Hamazura Shiage), have begun to question their orders and independently search for their own answers. Academy City finds itself amid growing tensions with the Roman Catholic Church after increasingly violent protests in France prompt it to intervene. Touma once again finds himself caught up in a series of events. What begins with a search for the mysterious Document of Constantine, an artifact that is being used to ignite the protests, escalates into a conflict with a group of elite, archangel-powered magicians called God's Right Seat, a power struggle between multiple princesses for control of Britain, World War III, and a near-cataclysmic, world-shattering event at the end. Hamazura Shiage and Accelerator also become main characters through all this, weaving in and out of the major plot points from different perspectives. Needless to say, there’s a lot going on!

Why You Should Watch Toaru Majutsu no Index III (A Certain Magical Index III)
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="GNBA-7841" text="" url="" ]

1. Non-Stop Plot

As you can glean from our attempt at summarizing it, Index III has many story arcs, which are often told from multiple perspectives. It can be really exciting to watch because there’s minimal downtime and lots of action that moves from group to group and place to place with wild abandon but intersects at many points and leads into the final bit of the story. In short, Index III has a lot of story in its relatively quick runtime.

2. Some Great Character Moments

Bouncing between Touma, Hamazura, and Accelerator, Index III has its share of impactful character development, particularly with Hamazura who is greatly built up into a proper main character during the story. While perhaps echoing fellow 0-level esper star Touma to some extent, seeing Hamazura succeed and mature without any special abilities in a world full of overpowered magic users and espers makes his victories all the more impactful. Accelerator is also given significant screen time that delves more into his trauma and character with a particularly interesting development at the end. Some of the new characters, such as edgy clone Misaka Worst, are fun additions.

3. Strong Sound

Continuing the series’ penchant for sonic quality, A Certain Magical Index III has worthwhile music and memorable sound effects (check out the new Imagine Breaker bwaaaauuunntthhhh!) that amplify the experience, particularly the many fights scenes. While the music might not quite be as excellent as the spin-off series A Certain Scientific Railgun, Index III’s OST does not disappoint and neither does the voice acting.

[ad_middle class="mt40"]
Why You Should Skip Toaru Majutsu no Index III (A Certain Magical Index III)

1. Non-Stop Plot!

While it can certainly be praised for having virtually no filler, A Certain Magical Index III’s main faults will likely fall in its storytelling. Arcs can be hard to follow and can feel underdeveloped as we get whisked away onto the next one, sometimes without proper explanation of character motivations. All of this is compounded by having so many characters and organizations to keep track of. Perhaps the series would have benefitted from having more episodes or adapting fewer volumes of the light novel.

2. Inconsistent Art Quality

Unfortunately, compared to previous seasons and Railgun, the art and animation seem to have been given less refinement in Index III. We wouldn’t say it’s awful, and there are some high points, but the artwork, for the most part, is just passable this season. There are noticeably bad frames here and there and some of the CG elements feel dated and ugly. One notable counterpoint is the second opening which looks (and sounds) fantastic!

3. Not so Much Index

This can be said of other characters too, but considering this series is ostensibly about Index she really isn’t given much plot importance besides getting captured and used as a weapon near the very end and some gags mostly revolving around her wanting food (which are fine, but not exactly character development). We think fan-favorite Misaka Mikoto and her squad could have gotten more screen time too but considering a new Railgun series is happening it’s more forgivable than snubbing Index in her own anime.

Altogether, Toaru Majutsu no Index III is a bit of a mixed bag. While it’s great to see the series animated again, and there are certainly some cool moments and character development in this season, the storytelling, art, and animation might leave you wanting for a more refined experience. Another possible quibble we’ll mention is that there’s a good amount of fanservice, it’s not super distracting, but might not be what you want from this series. In closing, we like to invite you to share your own thoughts in the comments section below! What do you think of Index III compared to previous seasons? Excited for the new Railgun series? Let us know, and be sure to stick around Honey’s for more of all things awesome, anime and otherwise!

While Pokémon has largely remained dominant since the start of the monster-catching craze that began in the 90s, there has been a huge number of other inventive and unique games in the genre more than worthy of your attention! We’re showcasing five of them here, an eclectic mix of games you should check out if you’re looking for a different take on monster raising mania. Let’s go get ‘em!

[ad_top2 class="mt40 mb40"]

5. Other Life: Azure Dreams (Azure Dreams)

While Konami isn’t widely associated with RPGs, when they do make them, they’re almost always something special. Azure Dreams combines elements from dungeon crawlers, dating sims, lite town building, and monster collecting into this intriguing cult favorite PlayStation RPG. The game takes place in the desert town of Monsbaiya which is built around a giant tower full of monsters. After his monster taming father disappears on an expedition, Koh enters the tower himself and meets a familiar of his own, a monster called Kewne who can speak. The two embark on a journey to find out what happened Koh’s father, grinding their way through the many floors of the tower, capturing monsters and finding treasures along the way. Azure Dreams is notable for its genre mashups, having the player character level up and fight alongside their monster companions, and having a distinctive retro art style.

4. Dragon Quest Monsters (Dragon Warrior Monsters)

[en][information_general item1 = "System" content1="Game Boy Color" item2="Publisher" content2="Enix" item3="Developer" content3="Tose" item4="Release Dates" content4="JP: September 25, 1998 NA: January 27, 1999 EU: January 25, 1999" post_id="" ][/en]

Arguably the best and most influential JRPG series of all time, Dragon Quest got its own monster collecting spinoff series with Dragon Quest Monsters. In this first game, the story follows sister and brother Milly and Terry from Dragon Quest VI as children. When Milly gets captured by a strange monster called Warubou, Terry rushes to her aid with the help of good monster Watabou who takes him to the Kingdom of GreatTree. To save his sister, Terry becomes a Monster Trainer and enters the Starry Night Tournament to try to win the prize of a wish from the king of GreatTree. Dragon Quest Monsters features charming Akira Toriyama-designed monsters and the main series’ classic combat system, with battles up to 3 vs 3 at once, along with a rich breeding and monster combination system that adds a lot of mechanical variety. The series has received numerous installments with the most recent being Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 3 in 2016, all of which are well made and worth checking out, especially if you already love Dragon Quest!

3. Rakugaki Ōkoku (Magic Pengel: The Quest for Color)

[en][information_general item1 = "System" content1="PlayStation 2" item2="Publisher" content2="Taito (JP) Agetec (NA)" item3="Developer" content3="Garakuda-Studio, Taito" item4="Release Dates" content4="JP: March 20, 2002 NA: June 24, 2003" post_id="" ][/en]

Although it isn’t without its flaws, Magic Pengel is one of the most unique games on the PS2 as a whole, not just among monster RPGs. In this colorful adventure, you play as a doodler, a person who can use the titular Pengel, a cute fairy creature with a paintbrush-like tail, to draw your own magical creatures to battle for you. In terms of gameplay, the combat is pretty basic but the ability to literally draw your own creatures in 3D and see them brought to life and animated is really technically impressive and a lot of fun. The world, story, and character designs are also top-notch, brought to life with the help of Studio Ghibli in one of their rare forays into video games. While a little clunky in some respects, Magic Pengel’s originality and charm make it a must-play for monster RPG connoisseurs and fans of cute games in general. Its action-rpg sequel Graffiti Kingdom is also fantastic!

2. Digimon World

[en][information_general item1 = "System" content1="PlayStation" item2="Publisher" content2="Bandai" item3="Developer" content3="Bandai, Flying Tiger Entertainment (English reprogramming)" item4="Release Dates" content4="JP: January 28, 1999 NA: May 23, 2000 PAL: July 6, 2001" post_id="" ][/en]
[es][information_general item1 = "Compañía" content1="___content1___" item2="Lanzamiento" content2="___content2___" item3="Géneros" content3="___content3___" item4="Plataforma" content4="___content4___" post_id="" ][/es]

You were probably expecting Digimon at some point as the giant multimedia franchise has probably been Pokémon’s main rival for collectible monster dominance since the early days. While there are many games in the Digimon series, we think that the original Digimon World represents one of the most interesting takes in the genre, which is why we’re mentioning it here. In this game, you are a kid who gets whisked away to the Digital World, tasked with restoring File City to its former glory after many Digimon have begun to lose their memories and become feral. Unlike a lot of other RPGs, Digimon World actually bases many of its mechanics on the original virtual pet toys that began the series. Your partner digimon must be fed, trained in an actual gym, and even taken to the bathroom; they age and eventually die and reincarnate to become a new baby form and the complexity of the commands you can give them is based on how smart they are. Digimon World is something of a flawed gem with its grindy stat training and strange combat system but it’s also incredibly atmospheric with a fantastic soundtrack and interesting world to explore which has made it a cult hit. This game was also given an enhanced remake called Digimon World: Next Order for Vita and PlayStation 4 in 2016 and 2017 respectively.

1. Tamamayu Monogatari (Jade Cocoon: Story of the Tamamayu)

[en][information_general item1 = "System" content1="PlayStation" item2="Publisher" content2="Genki (JP) Crave Entertainment (WW)" item3="Developer" content3="Genki" item4="Release Dates" content4="JP: December 3, 1998 NA: July 29, 1999 EU: July 25, 2000" post_id="" ][/en]
[es][information_general item1 = "Compañía" content1="___content1___" item2="Lanzamiento" content2="___content2___" item3="Géneros" content3="___content3___" item4="Plataforma" content4="___content4___" post_id="" ][/es]

Another PlayStation RPG! Jade Cocoon is set in a fantasy world that feels very reminiscent of Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind and Princess Mononoke which makes sense because this is another game Studio Ghibli was involved in, famous character designer Katsuya Kondo in particular. You play as Levant, a young cocoon master whose job is to capture mostly insect-like creatures called minions so that they can be purified by his village shaman to be used in battle, fused together to create new forms (which actually combine to be a visually distinct creature!), or woven into silk for money. With an intriguing world, intricate designs, and a rich and dark backstory, Jade Cocoon is a fascinating game that makes up for its simple rock-paper-scissors style monster combat and some plot hiccups with its personality. It also notably has almost every line of dialogue fully voiced which was pretty rare for the time and largely still holds up. A sequel set 100 years in the future, Jade Cocoon 2, was also released in 2001 for PlayStation 2.

[gray-hex-decoration]
So, the first thing we wanted to know is about the new updates for Attack on Titan 2: Final Battle. We see there are quite a few and we’d love to hear about them!
Well, first, we have many updates in this iteration of Attack on Titan 2: Final Battle. One of the first things we want to mention that is unique is for the Story Mode, you will have 3 streamlines that you can experience which is the same story in the game but through different perspectives.
That is nice! Do the different/new storylines you can follow come from the manga or the anime?
Well, the game is licensed by the anime committee so there are no direct ties to the story from the manga. With that, these new timelines you will experience are original stories developed specifically for the game but follow the anime storyline!
That is awesome.
Another thing to add, the 3 streamlines are the stories from the characters’ or a group of characters’ viewpoint. The first one is the Scout Regiment’s viewpoint, the second one is from the 104th’s, and the third one is from the Enemy of Humanity. Those are the timelines to experience and they intertwine with each other at some point as well.
We can’t wait to experience the original content made for the game! We notice one of the first things you are showing us is a new weapon in the game that was introduced in the anime not too long ago, can you tell us more about this new weapon?
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="Mikasa Thunder Spear" url="" ]
So, this new weapon, Thunder Spear, is not like a close quarters weapon you get with the Blades. Instead, the weapon provides some distance from you and the Titans you are hunting down. The Thunder Spear actually launches missile-type rounds that do target the area you are locked on to and they have the capacity to take down a titan almost effortlessly. This is in accordance with the anime because, in the manga, you would have to detonate the Spear’s missiles manually to take down a Titan but in the anime, and in turn, the game, it doesn’t honor that so it detonates after a very small amount upon firing the Thunder Spear.
For the Thunder Spear and its use, it seems to be an ultimate weapon you can use in the game but we wanted to know if it follows the same rules of resupplying its ammunition for use in battles much like you need to replace your blades after a while as well?
So, yes, it is an ultimate weapon for the player to use in missions but you would need to complete certain side missions in the story to unlock the weapon itself but once you unlock it, it is powerful. Once you unlock it, there is a burning gauge or meter that slows decreases indicating your time left using that weapon, in this case, the Thunder Spear. By going out into missions and collecting specific items or completing missions will build up the gauge for using your ultimate weapon. This weapon type is only usable when you are equipped with Blades but if you are equipped with another weapon type, then its “ultimate” weapon will be something else.
During this time, Suzuki-san was showing us some gameplay of Attack on Titan 2: Final Battle and the new Thunder Spear and we must say, this new weapon is awesome and definitely makes killing Titans all the more enjoyable. Suzuki-san continued to show us more gameplay and also some more weapons, adding:
In season 3, there were these anti-personnel weapons which were used for security in cities, so ultimately, against other humans. We had the idea of implementing the use of these guns in the game because if they were useful in the anime, they can be useful in the game as well when fighting Titans. So, in order to use these weapons, you simply need to visit a resupply post in missions and you can switch between weapons from there. With the basic gun, you get about 30 rounds each clip with 6 reload clips, and to add some extra challenge, there is no automatic reload so you will need to reload manually. In principle, the functions with using guns are the same: you can maneuver with the 3D Omni Gear, you have to reload manually, but the only thing is the action button for the guns is the right trigger you would normally use for FPS games. So, when you switch from blades to guns and vice versa, it may be difficult to remember which action-button to press in battle. Also, when firing the guns, you can single press for single shot and if you press and hold, it will activate rapid fire or automatic fire.
Those are some pretty cool additions to the game. Being able to use guns against Titans and not humans is something to look forward to in this new iteration. There is something we are curious about. How does the Hit Damage differ from Blades to Guns? Is one more powerful than the other or are they specifically set at a more or less equal percentage when giving damage?
So, because you are firing from a distance compared to blades which are close quarters, you are, so to speak, safer; so in order for there to be incentive or to be more realistic, we did lower the hit percentage guns can create a bit compared to the blades. We felt this would take away from the terror experience if it were easier so we programmed into the algorithm that as the game progresses, the Titans will react more aggressive when being shot at and spontaneously, they may suddenly target and sprint towards you making it much tougher to complete missions. They may even begin to throw rocks at you which adds to the difficulty.
Oh, so you can say that Titans will react differently depending on the type of weapon being used?
Ultimately, yes.
That is pretty cool. So the target locking system causing the Titans to go berserk on you is ultimately the same with no change but what was stated previously, correct?
Yes! Actually, it is the changes, whether they be small or big, that is something I felt very proud of with this new title and implementing the firearm system to the game was good. Since we’ve experienced 2 games where the blades were pretty much all you can use, I felt people needed something new and interesting in fear of things getting old so we added these new features to heighten the players experience and feeling the exhilaration of the games action-packed theme. I am pretty confident that many players will like this new combat system.
Well, we are excited and confident we will enjoy it. Thinking about new storylines, new weapons, and ultimately, new experiences, are there any new modes added to Attack on Titan 2: Final Battle?
Yes! There is. In this new mode, Territory Recovery, you will be able to experience taking back the wall(s) and being able to see many characters from the franchise. This includes those deceased before and new characters from the third season of the anime, you can now see them again in this new mode. Although the new purpose of this mode isn’t just that, you will have to create and manage your own team/regiment and eventually, an army to retake all the territories the Titans have taken over.
That is a lovely addition to the game. We’re curious then, would you be able to send out squads in real-time to complete missions or would you need to go out and complete these missions one by one?
So, the basic cycle of getting started is with one character first, which is the regiment leader—the player—, and you can only move starting from your base camp to different areas depending on how many “turns” you have accumulated as a reward from the story missions which adds a challenge by having to choose your turns wisely. Also, the more you territory you control, the more you’ll be able to unlock new characters to join/recruit in your regiment. Capturing new territories also grants you the opportunity to upgrade your base camp and research more weapons to build up your army and base camp. In time, this will allow you to go farther away from your base camp in hopes of recapturing all territories.
During this time, Suzuki-san begins to show me the gameplay for the Territory Recovery mode and sheds more light on it, stating:
When starting to choose your squads, you can assign different characters to your regiment, thus, different squads which give them different aptitudes. This includes changing the regiment leader—which you can change at any time during gameplay—, the emblem assigned to your regiment—which the change reflects in-game on monuments or your base camp—, and even the scouts themselves—which each have skill-sets for you to build up and have the ultimate squad. Changing the Leader will also have an effect and the player will experience different dialogue depending on who they are playing as. You will need to manage this to the best of your abilities as it will ultimately affect your gameplay experience by altering the story or unlocking new interactions to experience in the game. This is due to developing bonds and action based decisions that also affect the total mood of everyone else. To note, this is all approved by the committee for Attack on Titan and Koei Tecmo with Omega Force, so the players experience overall will be like nothing else in the franchise. In addition, there will be random events that will happen during your missions which pop-up notifications will let you know what is happening in the battlefield or updates regarding the mission itself. When choosing characters, there will indicators letting you know who is recruitable or not. To unlock them, as mentioned before, you will need to complete missions where you earn “Recruit Points” so to speak, that is what lets you unlock new characters to choose and play as.
So far, the interview is going so great that Suzuki-san decided to show me some fun weapons that are now available in Final Battle and that’s when he shows us the Crossbow Gun!!
This gun you could obtain in Attack on Titan 2 but you had to really grind for it and also, not many really knew about it.
Really?! We’ve played quite a bit of it and didn’t even know you could obtain this… Lol
Yeah, it is a weapon that you have to go far into the game to obtain it but once obtained, it is the deal breaker in the game for sure. Also, there are new costumes to uses such as what Kenny is wearing here in this gameplay, a shiny metallic samurai outfit. Also, about the ammunition, there are different types of ammunition such as an incinerator, freeze, and stun to help you with specific tactics when killing titans.
That is another nice addition, indeed. I like the new types to mix things up and provide a more immersive experience. Knowing how there are some unique finisher cut-scenes when taking down titans, will these new weapons have there own type of cut-scene?
Well, we do have them for mostly blade types and the new gun types, but not really for the other weapons but there are some unique scenes added for the blade and gun types. One instant I can show you is this ultimate for the gun type, which we’ve seen the Thunder Spear from the blade type...
That’s when he activates the ultimate or special weapon and out comes a freaking…
Oh, WOW! A Gatling Gun… Amaze-balls! Lol
This, for the record, was approved by the Kodansha committee! *chuckles*
That is great! *chuckles* We can’t wait to use this and really get down and dirty. Lol
The Gatling gun has rapid fire with huge damage in a matter of moments and this provides more for the players because we are all about the exhilaration so with the Thunder Spear, these are powerful weapons we hope players enjoy. And one last thing we want to mention is that we received a lot of feedback from fans that some of the casual players and/or fans of the anime, but aren’t too into games, found the battle system to be a bit challenging so we implemented a new assistance button you can activate which makes the attack control more accessible. So the normal steps are to lock on to a titan, aim, traverse around the titan if need be, and with the action button, you charge in and then press the action button again to slice the nape of the titan, killing and defeating it. With this new system to use, it’s just the action button to do everything. Simple.
With this mode, does it affect the camera movement for them? I know sometimes the camera can be tricky from time to time when having to be precise when you aim for a specific spot in scope mode.
No, this shouldn’t affect the camera movement at all. We want this to be more of a welcome for newcomers because if we did try to have a more accessible camera for them, it would kind of break the experience and combat in the game. So we hope the new system helps them want to become more involved with the game and learn to fine tune their skills playing it.
At this moment during the interview, our time was out and we had one more questions to ask so we asked the natural thing to get more hyped for the game:
With the new mode, new storylines, and new characters to experience, how long is the gameplay for Attack on Titan 2: Final Battle?
As far as the Character Story mode and the Territory Recovery Mode themselves, it is around 30 hours to complete both if you will but in order to cultivate all the elements to complete like character interactions, conducting research, etc., it can easily take more than 70+ hours to complete the game.
Well, that was great! Thank you very much for the time and patience showing me the demo and answering our questions.
It was our pleasure!

Final Thoughts

And that was it, folks! We do have to say, when we demoed the game right after the interview, it honestly felt like a breath of fresh air. Being able to use different weapons in this new iteration and also experiencing three different perspectives regarding the anime storyline in Character Story Mode, the new original content to add to that experience is what’s mostly on our mind. The Territory Recovery Mode also is fun and fresh in Final Battle, but some might find it familiar to other games in the same vein. With the turns system and completing missions, it felt similar to Dragon FighterZ and their turn system of progressing and saving/recruiting new characters/members to your squad/group. The graphics are still beautiful if not better and with the fact that you will be reliving Attack on Titan season 3 content through Final Battle, you will surely be blown away. At the time of writing this interview, we never progressed past Episode 5 in the Character Story mode for the sake of spoilers… But, the time we did get with the game was great. Other things we can add are some new attack and maneuvering functions in the game, making it easier to traverse and more entertaining! Other than that, we really can’t wait to get our hands on the final build when it nears the launch date. We really thank Koei Tecmo and Hideo Suzuki for allowing us the opportunity to experience this new iteration and to have asked some burning questions on our minds. We will wait patiently for the game to launch and hope all of you love it as much as we did. How do you feel about this interview? Are you hyped for the Final Battle iteration to release? Let us know in the comments below!
