Space Brothers

The cold void of space is a well-worn setting for some of our favorite anime, and it’s easy to see why. Mankind’s desire to traverse the galaxy, as well as our increasingly sophisticated understanding of how the universe works, is the creative spark for many excellent shows. The exotic nature of the setting is the perfect canvas for a wide variety of themes and visual styles. With that in mind, let’s dive into our Top Ten Space Anime.

10. Space Battleship Yamato 2199

Yamato 2199 dvd
[Information episodes=" 26 " aired=" April 2013 – September 2013 "]

A reboot of the beloved Space Battleship Yamato series popularized in the 70s, Space Battleship Yamato 2199 takes a classic anime and makes it better. Set in a bleak future where humanity is on the ropes after being nearly extinguished by aliens from Gamilias, Earth is a radioactive shell of its former beauty. Mankind ekes out a grim existence underground until a benevolent alien race from the planet Iscandar intervenes, and provides blueprints for an advanced spaceship capable of traversing the galaxy to search for humanity’s last hope, the Cosmo Reverse System. The United Nations Cosmo Navy uses this technology to resurrect the iconic Japanese WWII flagship, the Yamato, and send a brave crew to search the galaxy, all the while testing their mettle against the tenacious, ruthless Gamilians. Outside of the space-age action, this show has a lot going for it, particularly the way it explores both sides of the conflict, on the battlefield and politically.

9. Outlaw Star

Outlaw Star dvd
[Information episodes=" 26 " aired=" January 1998 – June 1998 "]

Set in a future timeline of Earth dubbed the “Toward Stars Era,” humanity discovers the secrets to Faster-Than-Light space travel after an asteroid containing a mysterious mineral crashes into a Chinese desert. As mankind explores the vast “new west” of space, outlaws, assassins and pirates abound, and it isn’t long before four major powers stake their claims on astral frontiers, and impose a type of order. Outlaw Star is a space opera/western that has aged incredibly well. The main characters, led by roguish jack-of-all-trades Gene Starwind, traverse the galaxy in their state-of-the-art pirate ship, the “Outlaw Star,” taking on all sorts of odd jobs while on the run from the powers that be, and at the same time, are on the hunt for the galaxy’s reputedly greatest treasure, the “Galactic Leyline.” With a memorable cast of characters and a great atmosphere, it’s easy to see how this show helped popularize the genre for Western audiences.

8. Knights of Sidonia

Knights of Sidonia dvd
[Information episodes=" 24 " aired=" April 2014 – June 2015 "]

Knights of Sidonia is a sci-fi anime set in an idyllic, somewhat dystopian future where the last vestiges of humanity survive in space, adrift on “seed ships” crafted from the remains of an Earth destroyed by giant, shape-shifting aliens called “Gauna.” Unable to communicate with the “Gauna,” humans have no choice but to battle for survival in giant mechs called “Gardes” to change the fate of humanity. It follows the story of Nagate Tanikaze, a human raised below the surface of the seed ship Sidonia. After being inducted into the Gardes pilot program, it’s up to him and his co-pilots to ensure the safety of Sidonia. One thing that sets this apart from other entries on the list is its uniquely brutal animation style, and the mysteriously antagonistic, almost omnipresent threat of the “Gauna.” The show deals with themes that are existential in nature, alternately contemplative and impressively violent, but always mature, such as what it means to be human, and the tensions that arise with social castes. Plus, talking bears!

7. Legend of the Galactic Heroes

Legend of the Galactic Heroes dvd
[Information episodes=" 110 " aired=" December 1988 – March 1997 "]

Legend of the Galactic Heroes is one of the longest-running anime series in history, and highly regarded by space anime aficionados, and it’s easy to see why. The series takes place in our very own Milky Way galaxy, in a distant future where humans have expanded their dominion through the terraforming of planets. There are two major powers engaged in a seemingly endless conflict for dominance; the Galactic Empire and the Free Planets Alliance. The drama of the series unfolds from two perspectives, the Empire’s coldly ambitious hero, the “Golden Lion” Reinhard von Lohengramm, and the Alliance’s compassionate, tactical genius Yang Wen-Li. The two engage in epic space battles centered on their mutual respect for their opponent’s military prowess, while the series explores the more subtle political conflict that is the foundation for the war itself. Although the animation style is a bit dated, the show has a very humanizing element expressed through its characters, and isn’t afraid to address questions that are still relevant in our constantly shifting political landscape.

6. Planetes

Planetes dvd
[Information episodes=" 26 " aired=" October 2003 – April 2004 "]

While most anime set in space center around epic battles and vast, galaxy-wide conflict, amidst it all is an unsung hero that almost no one mentions – the garbage man. In an environment where all that’s keeping the cold, heartless void from devouring you is an airtight sheet of metal, even the tiniest piece of garbage floating by fast enough can spell doom. Hachimaki and the other members of the DS-12 Space Debris Section of the Technora Corporation spend their time floating through space picking up garbage to ensure the safety of satellites, stations, and spacecraft orbiting Earth. While the section is looked down upon by other members of their company, much of the story unfolds from their perspective. Like anyone stuck in a dead-end job, they all have their own reasons for being there, and grander dreams for their future. While there are overarching plots with larger implications, it’s the characters that carry the show, rather than large-scale battles and grand political conflict.

5. Macross Frontier

macross frontier dvd
[Information episodes=" 25 " aired=" April 2008 – September 2008 "]

For the uninitiated, the Macross series takes place in a future where humanity has taken to the stars, living on a fleet of spaceships, searching for a habitable planet for humans to resettle and call home. The story starts with the inhabitants of the starship, the Macross Frontier, en-route to the galactic center, under attack by an incredibly powerful insectoid alien mech species, the Vajra. Like other entries in the series, the ensemble cast is the heart of the show. The drama revolves around the personal and combat-related trials of three main protagonists, effeminately youthful ace pilot Saotome, space-age pop star Sheryl Nome, and part-alien sweetheart Ranka Lee. Frontier combines many aspects of the series that fans came to love with an aesthetic and production more in line with what contemporary viewers have come to expect. The love-triangle at the heart of the story is a well-worn trope throughout the series, but the slick space-age action and the more nuanced conflict help bring it to a new generation of viewers.

4. Toward the Terra

Toward the Terra dvd
[Information episodes=" 24 " aired=" April 2007 – September 2007 "]

After the Earth was left an uninhabitable ruin due to war and pollution, mankind left the planet under the care of hyper-intelligent super computers known as “Superior Dominance.” The elite, seed remnants of humanity are all born in vitro, and forced to take a compulsory “adulthood” examination, where failure means immediate death, and passing allows acceptance into an idyllic, brainwashed community. One such youth, Jomy, is about to have his memories erased by Superior Dominance. He is rescued by Soldier Blue, a member of Mu, a rebel group of humans who have evolved with psionic abilities. Mu are engaged in a behind-the-scenes struggle against the oppressive AI that controls everyday existence, with the ultimate goal of returning to Earth, and freedom. The show deals with a lot of mature themes, including the merit of safety vs freedom, as well as the importance of understanding our environmental impact.

3. Space Dandy

Space Dandy dvd
[Information episodes=" 26 " aired=" January 2014 – September 2014 "]

For something completely different in tone, we turn to Space Dandy. A space opera centered on the roughshod adventures of dim-witted, pretty boy alien hunter, Dandy, his handy vacuum-cleaner turned robot QT, and sentient alien cat, Meow, Space Dandy employs a more lighthearted, non-linear form of storytelling compared to other entries on the list. Dandy is an idiot savant; a regular at the space-age version of Hooters who one day dreams of buying out the franchise, his job is to search the galaxy for new life forms and register them with the Space Alien Registration Center. But he is a man of many inscrutable talents; in order to avoid spoilers, let’s just say there’s more to him than meets the eye. Definitely take a look at this series; it transcends linear time and space, mortality, and the boundaries of good taste in the name of comedy.

2. Mobile Suit Gundam Wing

Gundam Wing
[Information episodes=" 49 " aired=" April 1995 – March 1996 "]

Mobile Suit Gundam Wing is perhaps among the best-known entries in the widely popular Mobile Suit Gundam series. It takes place in the distant future, where mankind has established space colonies that live under the yoke of the centralized government on Earth, the United Earth Sphere Alliance. In order to gain independence, the space colonies implement a secret program and send five young pilots of specially crafted mobile suits, the titular Gundam, to Earth. The action comes at a mile-a-minute, whether it’s in the form of larger-than-life mobile suit battles sweeping through the atmosphere, or the equally compelling drama of human politics taking place on terra forma. Each of the Gundam pilots present unique character traits and foibles, and watching them grow throughout the course of the conflict of the series, where heroes become villains and motivations change faster than a Zaku’s paint job, is as rewarding as all the silent, life-extinguishing explosions in space.

1. Cowboy Bebop

Cowboy Bebop DVD
[Information episodes=" 26 " aired=" April 1998 – April 1999 "]

Unsurprisingly, the critically and fan acclaimed series rounds out the list. If you’ve somehow missed this show despite its meteoric rise to popularity, it centers on Spike Spiegel. He’s a former hitman turned “cowboy” in a future in which mankind has colonized most of space, and established a contract-based bounty hunting force to supplement the Inter Solar Space Police. Partnered with his former officer friend, Jet Black, the pair scour the galaxy for big scores and pick up a few more members of their rag tag bounty hunting outfit, including bombshell Faye Valentine, and a Mensa-level Corgi. The show utilizes a non-linear form of storytelling, with episodes often taking a “case of the week” style arc influenced heavily by different genres of music. Peppered throughout is the overarching plot involving Spike’s rival, Vicious, a member of Spike’s former crime syndicate and rival in a deadly love triangle. The action is as stylish as it is visceral, whether it’s a high-speed chase through the farthest reaches of space, or the bone-crunching kung-fu taking place on the ground. Episodes encompass a wide variety of mature themes, but comedic beats prove the show doesn’t take itself too seriously. Check it out, space cowboy.

Top 10 Weird Anime [Best Recommendations]

seikon no qwaser wallpaper

What do you classify as weird? With anime, it’s easy to find weird series because of all the different kinds of genres and creative wonders we have gotten over the years... Stuff like characters having special vision which grants them the power to see the energy inside other people’s bodies. Or why not kids trying to be the best at catching monsters in small pocket balls? With this list, we will dig into some weird anime in the sense that these don’t have normal plot lines and they are strange in some way if you compare them to normal anime about school life and where there isn’t anyone with super powers and so on. So let’s get weird and get into Top 10 Weird Anime !

[ad_top2 class="mt40"]

10. Naruto Shippuden

Naruto Shippuden (1)
[Information episodes=" Unknown " aired=" February 15, 2007 "]

Naruto Shippuden is an anime most might say is normal but it’s fairly common to start a discussion with the friends about what the anime really is about. It’s like a mix of wizards and ninjas. With ninjas turning themselves into girls using the sexy no jutsu and other clans having the power to see the energy which flows through your body. We have other characters who have made themselves into puppets or even changed bodies in order to live forever. So in other words, this is perhaps not such a normal anime after all.

9. Qwaser Of Stigmata

Seikon no Qwaser dvd
[Information episodes=" 24 " aired=" January 10, 2010 – June 20, 2010 "]

Now here comes a ‘wtf’ anime. It seems like a normal action anime, cool name and all. We’ve got Qwaser, people who use special powers in order to battle each other. Seems pretty normal thus far right? But this is where this anime goes beyond the concept of weirdness. It’s a creative way of doing things, I’ll give ‘em that, but here is what makes the anime weird: in order to get energy for these powers which the characters use, they have to drink breast milk. This seems odd and one starts to wonder if they didn’t get any while growing up as a baby. Lot’s of questions arise, but then again, anime can be pretty weird sometimes.

8. Lucky Star

Lucky Star dvd
[Information episodes=" 24 " aired=" April 8, 2007 – September 17, 2007 "]

There’s some things which make Lucky Star weird in a lot of ways. Firstly, it might be that Lucky Star is an anime which is about... Nothing. There is actually no story surrounding this anime. But we can also look into the fact that it has a girl who loves adult video games and anime/manga. Before she turned eighteen, she borrowed the adult video games her father bought. So there are a few questions about how healthy the relationship between her and her dad is and so on. But it’s mostly a weird anime just because of the story and because of Konata’s hobbies.

7. Sleeping With Hinako

Sleeping With Hinako dvd
[Information episodes=" 1 " aired=" February 10, 2010 "]

This is perhaps one of the more weird anime out there. Basically, it’s an anime about a female character sleeping while the camera shows different spots of her half-naked body, panties and everything. While she sleeps very adorably, the viewer just looks and listens to the cute sounds she makes while dreaming. It’s a good choice for a different and weird anime. In short, it’s an anime for otaku who want a girl sleeping next to them.

6. Samurai Pizza Cats

Samurai Pizza Cats dvd
[Information episodes=" 54 " aired=" February 1, 1990 – February 12, 1991 "]

Teenage Ninja Turtles is the first thing you should think of here, but instead of turtles throw in some cats who are samurai and instead of a big love for pizza, these cats work at a pizza joint. There isn’t much more that needs to be said about this anime, it’s pretty easy to see why this anime makes it onto this list.

5. Yakitate Japan

yakitate japan dvd
[Information episodes=" 69 " aired=" October 12, 2004 – March 14, 2006 "]

We see it all the time, anime about sports and card games. Yakitate Japan is more into the food genre; bread is the name. What makes this anime weird is because of the in-detail way they describe the process of making bread in a funny and serious way. So why not learn a little more about making tasty bread for breakfast? And because it’s anime, it would be a hell of a lot more exciting to bake bread in Yakitate Japan !

4. Unko-san

Unko-san dvd
[Information episodes=" 13 " aired=" March 18, 2009 - July 20, 2009 "]

Right away, the name is pretty weird. Unko-san is an anime about poo, translated as ‘’Mr. Feces’’. A poo fairy living on an island with her other poo friends... It’s totally normal with an anime about what should be flushed down the toilet, right? The main purpose of the anime is to present a cute atmosphere. So what do you think? Is it very cute with an island of living poop or totally weird?

Unko-san wallpaper

3. Pokémon

pokemon chronicles dvd
[Information episodes=" 276 " aired=" April 1, 1997 – November 14, 2002 "]

Pocket Monsters, it’s very hard not to have heard about Pokémon and when one actually thinks about what Pokémon really is, it isn’t that normal because well, hey, here’s a new animal who can only say it’s own name! Let’s put it in this small ball and now it will fight for me. It’s pretty weird but maybe that’s why it became so popular too?

Pokemon XY wallpaper

2. Gintama

Gintama dvd
[Information episodes=" 201 " aired=" April 4, 2006 – March 25, 2010 "]

Gintama mixes two popular themes: the Edo period with aliens, and that is where it gets weird. Anyone who has seen Gintama will agree on that. Just think of big dogs who want to eat everyone, frog-like aliens having dangerous pets and small girls who are super strong. But that’s what makes the anime so great and funny too – it’s totally weird but still mixes in the Edo period of Tokyo into itself with all the aliens from outer space.

Kagura Gintama wallpaper

1. Akikan

akikan dvd
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" January 4, 2009 – March 29, 2009 "]

When hearing about this anime for the first time, most will just go: ‘eh, what?’ because we all know about the types of vending machines in Japan with food, drinks etc. But what about girlfriends in a can? This anime’s all about soda cans which transform into girls and then battle over which is best – aluminium or steel. So you decide; does it sound weird or just totally normal like your average anime show? It’s a fun and weird concept, that’s for sure.

akikan wallpaper

akikan wallpaper

Anime is filled with weirdness and if you ask most people, that is what anime is to them – weird. But it’s a good thing, it makes it a lot more fun to watch and it also gives creators a lot of freedom to create many different kinds of stories. Which anime do you feel is the most weird one? Be sure to comment on it down in the comments section and remember, anime will always be weird and awesome at the same time!

It is a must given for all anime lovers who visit Tokyo that they must see Akihabara, what we proudly call our Mecca or Vatican City. If you ever get the chance to visit, there are plenty of places to visit for a large percentage of your needs. But where can you go for the hottest anime goods? One easy answer is Mandarake. It is eight floors of anime, manga, retro video games, J-pop and tokusatsu goods. It has something for all Japan entertainment buffs. All items are used and depending on the rarity of a certain item, it can go as high as 300,000 yen!!! (Current exchange rate as of Fall 2015 is averagely 120 yen to $1USD)

The Experience

The First Floor

Before entering prior to opening hours, customers can enjoy some window displays. Usually it has some nice cosplays on exhibit and various retro toys not only from Japan, but from all over the world. The first floor serves as the place where people can sell their goods. Before opening hours on weekends, lines will be packed but it is mostly with people who want to sell stuff, so you are not 100% obligated to wait in line with them. Also on display are retro toys from between the 1950s and 1970s. Paintings by Japanese artists such as Matsumoto Leiji, the creator of Galaxy Express 999 and Space Battleship Yamato are occasionally on display as well. On the side, there is an entrance that is instantly accessible to the elevators and stairs. Customers are free to use this entrance. If you desire the exercise, please use the stairs. The elevator (only 2 sets) can get crowded, and you may have to wait awhile to get in.

mandarake f1p1

The Second Floor

This is the cosplay floor and from my personal experiences, this is mostly aimed for female customers. From Sailor Moon, Madoka, to Hatsune Miku, fans can find quality costumes, wigs, and props. There may be cosplay for male characters from series like Prince of Tennis, but due to its popularity with women in Japan, the material and design of the shirts and pants are meant to fit a woman's frame. Due to the high domestic made quality of the costumes, costumes will range between 10,000 to 30,000 yen. Compared to other floors, this section is relatively small and is not really that crowded.

mandarake f2p1

The Third and Fourth Floors

If any of you are looking for manga and/or art books, this is the place for you. The third floor is aimed for male customers while the fourth floor is for females. Most of the manga will be used and one volume can be as cheap as 100 yen and can go as high as 500 yen. Depending on the series and the quality, a 25-volume manga set can range from 2000 to 20,000 yen. The third floor sells Japanese translations of American comics as well. Both floors (and from time to time, the second) will also sell scripts and animation cels of anime series!!! There, fans are likely to see the cels of the original Sailor Moon anime series and Macross 7 for sale, and they can range from 1,000 yen to 20,000 yen. Compared to the second floor, these floors are very spacious but between bookshelves within the asiles, these places can be very cramped. So be careful if you are carrying a backpack. Trying to walk between people in bookshelf aisles is going to be a nightmare on a crowded day!

mandarake f3 4p1

The Fifth Floor

This is for people who love hentai. This is just one of those instances where you are encouraged to use your imagination on what they got for sale in a place like this. Everyone who loves anime and knows about the hentai genre already has a general idea of how "creative" it can get and if you choose to enter, it is within at your personal discretion.

mandarake f5p1

The Sixth Floor

Looking for DVDs, Blurays, retro games, CDs, and posters? This is the place for you!! The front half of this floor from the entrance is dedicated to retro games between the days of the Famicom to the PS2/Dreamcast/GameCube generation, while the back half is the place for anime, tokusatsu, and J-Drama DVDs and Blurays. Game prices can range from 1,000 yen for any common Famicom game to let's say 10,000 yen for Crows on the Sega Saturn. Most Neo Geo games can go as high as 80,000 yen!!! Also, please keep in mind these games will not work on non-Japanese consoles so you may have to get a converter, or buy a Japanese console. Retro consoles from the Famicom to the Dreamcast average from 3,000 to 6,000 yen depending on the quality. The Mega Drive however will cost 10,000 yen and so will the Mega CD. But many hardcore Sega game collectors can promise that the Japanese Mega CD (and Saturn) library has some really awesome Japanes exclusive games that justify its costs. DVD and Bluray Japanese prices are a completely different beast altogether. For example, the 1986 animated Transformers movie on DVD there costs 15,000 yen!!! In addition, the DVD set of Mach Go Go Go (or known world wide as Speed Racer) for 25,000 yen while the Bluray is 40,000 yen!!! The bad news is that Japanese DVDs will not work on most US DVD players, but should with European due to both being region 2 coded, while the US is region 1. But in some pleasing news, Japanese Blurays will work with a good number of Bluray players around the world. So for lets say American buyers, Japanese blurays will work on American players. The prices will also apply to tokusatsu series like Zyuranger (the series that paved way the original Power Rangers) and popular J-drama series like Gokusen. CDs can be pricey as well. I bought a CD set of Transformers soundtracks for 7,000 yen. In addition, a rare Rockman soundtrack goes for 30,000 yen!!! But for more common and mainstream franchises such as Bleach and Naruto, prices will be as low as 1,500 yen. Compared to the manga floors, this area is surprisingly not as crowded, and has a bit more walking space in the aisles. So if you like some privacy while browsing, this might be the right spot.

mandarake f6p1

The Seventh and Eighth Floors

The seventh and eighth floors are dedicated to action figures, trading cards, models and build-a-figures. The seventh floor is mostly dedicated to anime while the eight floor is dedicated to Transformers and tokusatsu. The space of these floors is the same as the remaining stores, but the aisle space is CRAMPED. If you're Yokozuna size, you're not going to fit in. Many of the retro figures, especially Ultraman and Godzilla merchandise from the 60s and 70s, are going to be astronomical. If you want the Dino buckler from Zyuranger (or the morpher from Power Rangers), be prepared to pay 120,000 yen!!! If you want master grade Transformers figures exclusive to Japan (the size of let's say 1/60 Gundam model), you may have to pay 40,000 – 80,000 yen. If you are looking for generic anime figures, prices will be more averagely affordable between 2,000 to 10,000 yen. Most Sailor Moon and Dragon Ball Bandai figures in addition to most Gundam models will be around 3,000 to 6,000 yen. As for trading cards, be prepared to pay 30,000 yen for Sailor Moon cards from the 1990s!!! The seventh floor also sells figures of American comic book characters as well from Marvel, Image, and DC.

Additional info

The great news is that there will be foreign staff that can help if you can't understand Japanese. One of the clerks is a young American lady. She normally works the seventh and eighth floors so please look for her if she happens to be working there. Akihabara also has Wi-Fi so hopefully you should be able to access it there. On one important note, the store will have displays and signs that say you can't take pictures so if you want to post pictures of a figure that caught your eye and want to post it on your Instagram or Facebook, then you can't. If you get hungry after some hard shopping, at the recommendation of Honey’s Anime, you try this ramen restaurant just right by. It's the yellow building just right across from the front entrance, and you can't miss it. The ramen there is probably one of the best you can ever have in Japan! Unfortunately, it does get busy and during lunch, the lines are pretty hectic, but worth the wait! During the summer, there is a nice ice cream stand just right outside as well.

Overall conclusion

In other good news, there are other Mandarake locations around Tokyo such as in Shibuya, Nakano, and Ikebukuro. Outside of Tokyo, there are locations in Osaka, Utsunomiya, Sapporo, Nagoya, and Fukuoka. But nothing beats the one in Akihabara. This place has most of your needs on practically every front whether it would be soundtracks, DVDs, blurays, figures, games, posters, etc.

YES!!! I've been waiting for this, it's my favorite part!!!
I'm genuinely pleased to hear this. This is my favorite part of the series. But I'm worried that the first half won't be as exciting, and you have to watch that to keep up with the story.
The voice actors are probably going to be the same as the manga commercial's.

anime meme (wow such meme much anime)

So, I heard you like anime memes? Everyone on the internet has probably trolled someone with ‘em. Just in case, a meme is like an inside joke for peeps on the internet. Images that go viral because of their funny content or because of some random dude making it funny by adding text to it is basically meme material. As long as many people abuse an image for the same type of joke, making it become famous on the internet - anything and anyone can become a meme. Anime has often shown on people's screens as memes, most times not a specific anime, but anime in general. Those famous anime-referenced memes that have made us laugh over the years are the ones I’m gonna show ya here. The amount of time I wasted on this intro is too damn high! Let's start!

[ad_top2 class="mt40"]

10. It’s Over 9,000!!!

For some strange reason, Vegeta’s reaction to the scouter results of Goku’s powers became viral. The reaction was so exaggerated that it shocked fans… after uh, a LOT of years... I wonder why. But it was used for expressing a large quantity of anything. Any situation in real life where it could be said, it was used either with the pic or just the text “It’s Over 9,000!!!” Yeah, it was funny for a while, but as fast as the popularity of this meme rose, as fast did it fall.

9. Mai Waifu

Something special for the otaku guys, the waifu. Mr. Kimura uses the phrase in Azumanga Daioh! and it struck English viewers. It’s just a real thing that the Japanese people say! But this meme is totally taken out of context. It really refers to the favorite female character for otaku and in a more creepy sense, to otaku’s favorite girl anime figure back home or uh... a pillow. Girls, please double-check which Waifu guys are talking ‘bout!

8. Spot the main character

Spreading like wildfire on Tumblr a while back, this meme triggers something that everyone has noticed in anime, the background characters are very dull. This meme is very easy to understand and even if it's mainly used in anime, it may sometimes be used in real life by otakus to point out interesting people among a boring crowd. Do your best to become a main character!

7. Pregnancy test

It’s a trap! If you ever see a similar image don't believe it! It’s a meme! For some unknown reason, this blank template of anime hands holding a pregnancy test started popping up around the web. It is said that it originated on the Japanese forum, 2chan last year and since then, people started using it with any matching screen cap of many anime. It's kind of unknown, but in the right hands, it can create hilarious images!

6. Slowpoke

People that know Pokémon know that Slowpoke is a very slow one. If you can’t figure it out by only the name then… get your ?@!# together. It was used on the internet with only a picture of Slowpoke in the center and an opening sentence that started “Hey guys! Did you hear…” followed by some outdated info that everyone should know already. It is sometimes also used for the same reasons but with other Slowpoke images or fan art, without the text because, well everyone should know once they see a Slowpoke!.

5. Seen enough hentai

This is for the pervs out there. :P Any image or video that involves tentacles, vines, long objects or any other promising pose can trigger your imagination. Well someone came up with the catchphrase “I’ve seen enough hentai to know where this is going” to accompany these images and turn them into a meme! Mostly used for real life stuff or cartoons, this clearly originated in well… anime hentai! Don't need to explain any further! You know you’ve watched enough hentai to giggle at some of these! Perv!

4. Anime Logic

Love is blind! And sometimes anime lovers oversee some very strange anime logic. For example, big chested, blonde and blue eyed Japanese girls? Whaaat? Ash understanding what Pikachu says? Riiight... No one can spot the similarities between Usagi and Sailor Moon? Anime why do you do this? While it might make us tilt our heads, sometimes it may be necessary for the story to continue or just to make us laugh. Just shush and let it be! Usually, this meme is a GIF accompanied by another meme of the cartoon Spongebob, the “Seriously?” face, or that Jackie Chan image. It’s sometimes used just by simply taking a screencap and adding the text “Anime Logic” to it.

3. Anime IRL

Anime in real life, a classic. We’ve all ROFL’d at least once after seeing one of these. Images of real life mixed with anime characters and some bad photoshopping skills. It’s often used with political stuff, but the most popular, whether it’s supposed to be funny or sadly, completely serious: Guys together with their favorite anime girl, literally. Legit pic editing skills bruh.

2. Subs

Omg, waiting for the actual original dub/sub takes SO long. What to do? I can’t see this RAW, I don’t know Japanese!! Wait there’s always… fan subs! yaay! Welp, we all know that these are not exactly very accurate, many times, people translate a whole episode in hours! Many things can go wrong or… maybe it’s their purpose? Are they honest mistakes? Or is that what the character really wanted to say? The world may never know but one thing is for sure, some anime subs have become the hype of the moment and have made it into memes.

1. Notice me senpai

Also known as “I hope senpai notices me today” or “I hope senpai will notice me today”, this is probably the most known anime meme today. We have seen this phrase in way too many anime, especially school rom coms. Senpai is the Japanese word for someone superior to you in skill, school, or age. Often said by shy girls in anime, it has become widely known on the internet - even for those who don't watch anime. It has spammed our social media feeds with either anime pics, real life pictures with anime eyes and doodles over it, fan art, or even T-shirts. How about you guys? Did you ever use it? Is it too desperate to say? But many people use it because it’s a very kawaii expression right? Even Honey-chan uses it! Hehe. I worked hard on this, I hope senpai notices (*ノ∀`*)♡ .

Am I the only one around here who didn't want this to end? I hope this was an enjoyable article and if you didn’t know any of these, I hope you looked ‘em up and smiled or lol’d with a serious face - either way, it doesn't matter, memes are the best. Let us hope that in the future there are even funnier anime memes filling our Facebook pages with silly and interesting anime-related jokes. Please don’t say “ain't nobody got time for comments!” Show me memes I don't know and I’ll love you forever! Like and no comment? That’s not how this works, that’s not how any of this works!

[Editorial Tuesday] How to Anime Fansub

how to fansubs top image

Disclaimer:

This article is purely meant to give you insight on the subtitling process, and we encourage its proper use. We are in no way condoning the subtitling and distribution of any copyrighted material for which you do not possess an appropriate license.

If you’re like me, who watched anime before Crunchyroll even existed, you’ll know what fansubs are. You know, fansubs are those downloadable subtitled anime with often silly names attached to them like “ShinobiKitsuneLovers Fansubs” and are distributed free of charge. But have you ever wondered how fansubs or fan-made subtitles were made? If you’re fluent in Japanese and English and want to help the anime community by translating and sharing neglected anime, do you even know what the steps are and the tools needed to fansub? If the title of the article wasn’t obvious enough, I’m going to show you how to fansub anime. I’ll tell you from the get-go that is not easy and while it’s a fun experience, the process is very tedious and you may end up getting overwhelmed. I know because I’ve been fansubbing for 8 years now.

What are Fansubs?

Before we go to the guide, let me explain what fansubs are. Fansubs, or fan-made subtitles are, well, subtitles made by fans for fellow fans. Back in the day, people mostly relied on companies to localize anime, but since these companies were small and barely touched 1% of the anime found in Japan, fans decided to take matters into their own hands to translate and distribute anime. These are fansubs. Now that’s over with, let’s get to the guide!

how to fansub what is fansubs

Guide Introduction

I will list down every step needed to produce a modern fansubbed anime with toggle-able subtitles (subs you can turn on or off), so don’t expect me to take you back to the distant past and fansub using dated software, hardware, VHS, and hundreds of miles worth of cables. This guide will show you the tools required, but I will not teach you how to use them. Manuals exist for each one of them and part of the fun is figuring them out! Seriously, when I started out, I had to learn everything through trial and error. Also please note that the steps in fansubbing are different in every group, but the entire processes are structurally the same.

The Crew

  • Translator (TL)
  • Translation Checker (TLC)
  • Editor
  • Encoder
  • Timer
  • Typesetter
  • Quality Control (QC)
  • Distro

The Tools

  • A computer with muscle
  • Good pair of headphones
  • Subtitling program
  • Video encoder
  • Fast internet or a server
[ad_top2 class="mt40"]

Step 1: Group Coordination

The most efficient way of communication is through IRC or Internet Relay Chat. The group leader (usually the translator) carefully assigns everyone their tasks and makes sure work doesn’t pile up and prevents miscommunication.

Step 2: Encoding

Encoding the episodes to small sizes in popular “containers” like MKV and MP4 are recommended because these types of containers and the right video codec settings are compatible with any modern device. If you want your fansubs to reach to a bigger audience, make sure your encodes are compatible.

how to anime fansub meGUI

MeGUI

As for the encoding tools, there are many popular tools out there like HandBrake and MeGUI, but if you wanna be hardcore, go manual with using the CMD interface and x264. An experienced encoder might prefer the latter option because you have more freedom and less resources are used when encoding. Ultimately it’s up to personal preference. Encoding a video is very demanding, so you’re going to need a beefy computer to encode an HD video. Depending on what filters or how lengthy the episodes are, it will take you around 1 to 12 hours to encode. Be sure your computer is well-ventilated because the encoder (the tool, not you) will make the computer sweat like an athlete. Through this process, you may end up making two versions of the episode: a “workraw” and the “final” version. A workraw is a version your translator and editor will use. The video quality is low, meaning the file size is small and easy to download. The final version is the version that you’re going to give to your timer, typesetter and eventually the version your group is going to use. After your encodes are done, pass them to the Translator, Timer, and Typesetter. Fansubbing can actually begin.

Step 3: Translation

Fansubbers rarely have access to the official scripts, so the Translator must rely on their ears and knowing the source material of the anime. Checking official websites for character bios, terminologies, and story helps a lot.

how to anime fansub Headphones

A typical pair of monitor headphones.

You’re going to need a pair of good headphones to listen to the dialogue and write them down on a text file, or, in my case, in Google Docs. The Translator may rewatch the episode multiple times just in case they missed something.

how to anime fansub translation

A typical translation environment.

Once the initial script is done, the Translator will pass it on the Timer and Typesetter.

Step 4: Script Timing

The process is straightforward and it also is one of the longest to finish. Aside from syncing the translation to the spoken dialogue, the Timer must avoid letting the lines “bleed out” to the next scene and make sure the duration of each line is long enough for the viewers to read.

how to anime fansub script timing

You rely on your ears and the audio spectrum on the top right.

The most popular subtitling tool and the jack-of-all-trades is the freeware Aegisub. The vast number of options may be overwhelming at first, but you’ll soon realize that only a handful are dedicated to script timing.

Step 5:Typesetting

The Typesetter’s main task is to essentially decorate the subs using the right fonts. They’re also responsible for syncing the sign translations and make them look like they’re part of the original signs. They’re also responsible for making those fancy karaoke in the opening and ending themes.

how to anime fansub typesetting

What the signs look like as a series of code.

Aegisub is the right tool for this, but if you want more complex signs, you need additional support tools like Mocha and Adobe After Effects. Please avoid excessive effects because the resulting fansub may be too CPU intensive for anyone to use. The video will stutter and audio will no longer sync. Oh and don’t ever use Comic Sans or you can kiss your fansubbing career goodbye. Trust me on this.

Step 5: Editing

After the Timer is done, well, timing the script, it will be forwarded to the Editor. They’re in charge of making the script well-worded, grammatically correct, and giving the script additional frill.

how to fansub editing

Editor checking the script in Aegisub and leaving notes.

The Editor will leave notes in the script pointing out things like missing lines, a potential mistranslation, or clarifications.

Step 6: Translation Check

There is a high possibility the Editor may have gone too far with their editing or the Translator misheard a line, so it’s up the the Translation Checker or TLC’er to double check the translation.

how to anime fansub TLC

The TLC’er fixing a joke and providing a detailed explanation.

Did the Editor make the mistake of turning a sentence to a brash one instead of a sincere one? Did the Translator misinterpret a joke? Were the potential errors noted by the Editor correct? The TLC’er will address and potentially correct these issues.

Step 7: Assembly

After the script is translated, timed, edited, passed TLC, complete with the necessary typesetting and fonts supplied, it’s time to put them all together into one master script and put them into the final encode. The one in charge of this step is usually the Encoder. The process of putting the script, fonts to a video encode is called “muxing” and one of the most popular tools for this job is MKVMerg.

Mux

Tool for putting everything into one usable media file.

Here you put the files into their respective spaces, label the video, audio, script tracks if you will, and load the fonts. Hit “start muxing.” We’re not done yet!

Step 8: Quality Check

Once everything is “muxed” to the encode, the QC’er steps in and makes one final check. The QC’er checks the encode for mistimed lines, spelling errors, typesetting bleeding through to the next scene, checks for spotty English, checks that the fonts were also muxed, sees if the tracks were labled, etc. The QC’er sends a report to everyone involved, fixes any problems, and has the video remuxed. Once the QC’er gives their seal of approval, it will be passed to the Translator for the final go signal.

Step 9: Distribution

File Name

Common naming format

Once the fansub is ready, it will be forwarded to the Distro and their main task is to, well, distribute your fansubs to everyone. The Distro is usually the one with the fastest internet and most of the time owns a server. They will register the fansub to popular spots for people to download. DONE!

Conclusion

And there you have it! These are the usual steps needed to fansub any anime and yeah, it’s HARD. Contrary to popular belief, fansubbing is not something anyone can do. It requires the full cooperation of many people from different parts of the world, the process is time-consuming, requires a lot of energy and resources, and is often mentally-draining. If one of the members slacks off, or goes MIA during the process, everything crumbles and it ruins everything. It also lowers group morale. If you plan to fansub an anime in the future, be prepared for one hell of an experience. If you have any questions, leave a comment below!

Kuroko jumps at the invitation, but Kagami is slightly troubled. That's because the first-years of Seirin's basketball club were planning a surprise birthday party for Kuroko on that day. But Kagami tells Kuroko the party can wait until the evening. Then January 31st comes along; Kuroko's ideal day is just getting started. Reactions Around the Web

I was done in by Kurokocchi's smile!
It must be since middle school that Akashi's smiled that much playing basketball. Kise's your stable hunk. The Generation of Miracles is the best! I'm getting more and more pumped for the movie! Also, congrats, Izuki-senpai!

Timanin Yukikaze (Taimanin Asagi franchize)

The first problem that presented itself as I started doing research for this article, was what criteria I should base my selections on. Admittedly, Hentai was by and large unknown territory to me, and although I had some vague childhood/early teen memories of stumbling upon uncanny depictions of my then favorite Digimon characters on Kaaza (or was it Limewire?), back then the bandwidth luckily put an end to what could have become an unhealthy obsession. Nostalgia aside, I consulted a few similar lists, and found a whole range of different standards by which series belonging to this niche could be judged: conventional criteria such as story, character development or quality of animation, but also how ‘realistic’ it feels, and, most importantly, whether it managed to cause sexual arousal with the given consumer. As a commenter on Youtube put it: ‘When I watch anime, I have three things I want to see: ti**, a** and vagina’ (the user’s surprising choice of a rather sophisticated term for female genitalia took me by surprise). Another fact that needs recognition is that ‘hentai’ – that is, if we interpret this word as ‘Japanese erotica’, which will serve as my definition here – is enjoyed by both sexes. Thus, I came to the conclusion that this list had to include representative selections from a the wide array of genres that exists out there. It’s about time to start, so if you happen to be under the age of 18, this is where your parents would tell you to stop reading. Another thing that deserves mention is the fact that we’ll be touching upon (no pun intended) the usual objectionable content we find in anime: sexualization of underage girls (and boys), glorification of ra**, general misogyny, incest and other sorts of sexual abuse. But enough chit-chat, let’s get down to business and start our list of the Top Ten Hentai Anime!

10. Bible Black

bible black dvd
[Information episodes=" 6 " aired=" Jul 2001 - Jun 2003 "]

Based on a 2000 PC game, the story centers around a gathering of witches and a student who finds a book on black magic and starts using it for his own viscous purposes. In addition to, obviously, it’s sexual content, the series has fantasy elements like mind control, reincarnation, as well as a fair share of horror. Mixing the occult with explicit, it’s no wonder the PC game and it’s succeeding OVAs struck a chord with the hentai crowd, offering something more than other anime on the market at the time. In what might have been the ultimate troll from a now ex-employee at the cartoon channel Teletoon, the first thirty minutes of a re-cut version of the first OVA entitled Bible Black Complete Version, was aired at midnight, probably shocking the hordes of 10 year-olds allowed to stay up late watching re-runs of their favorite cartoons.

9. Tentacles and Witches

Sorry, we cannot show the image.
[Information episodes=" 4 " aired=" May 2011 - Nov 2012 "]

It goes without saying that any self-respecting hentai anime top ten list – now I’m not claiming that such a thing exist, or that this list would fall in under that category, but just bear with be and try to imagine that it does – needs at least one tentacle r*** porn entry. Western discussions about this particular genre does however always seems to exaggerate the proliferation of such pornography in Japan – perhaps in an expression of this somewhat outdated ‘Weird Japan’ stereotype, but that’s a topic for another article. Anyway, boy peeps at teacher, teacher is actually a titular witch, boy is punished and turned into titular tentacle monster, tentacle sex ensues. Tentacles and Witches basically takes over where Urotsukidoji ended, minus the gore (and, arguably, pop-culture value and general edginess).

8. Enzai (Falsely Accused)

Enzai dvd
[Information episodes=" 2 " aired=" Apr 2004 - Oct 2004 "]

I was in doubt as to which sort of yaoi hentai I should choose, something light like Sensitive Pornograph or something less safe for work, and ended up opting for the latter. Based on the popular and most certainly highly controversial game of the same ways, Enzai is set in 19th century France in the aftermath of the revolution and follows a young boy named Guys, who gets convicted for a murder he didn’t commit. I’ll leave the conditions of the prison he is sent to up to the reader’s imagination, but he does drop his soap more than once. The ‘prison’ is one of the classic porn movie settings, and Enzai is the anime to choose if one’s into the Yaoi version of that kind of stuff. Though the anime is said to lack the game’s depth and plot, it still preserves a lot of elements that makes it live up to the ‘intelligent hentai’ brand.

7. Yakin Byoutou (Night Shift Nurses)

Yakin Byoutou dvd
[Information episodes=" 10 " aired=" Dec 2000 - Jan 2004 "]

The most surprising part of this tale of a sadistic gynecologist named Ryuji Hirasaka is not the fact that it contains enough quantities of a certain bodily fluid that doesn’t put a certain girl in a tub to shame, but that all of the titular nurses are OVER the age of what sane persons would consider appropriate for being depicted in a pornographic movie. Another ‘hentai hentai’ anime, in the sense that it’s not only erotic but also features some pretty twisted stuff, Night Shift Nurses holds the actually pretty impressive reputation as one of the most graphic hentai anime. I try to live by the rule that if something is controversial, and by virtue of being controversial has managed not to fade into obscurity, it’s at least done something right and is thereby worth checking out.

Yakin Byoutou wallpaper

6. Waver (Behind Closed Doors)

Waver dvd
[Information episodes=" 3 " aired=" Sep 2001 to Apr 2002 "]

Although almost all the series on this list involves elements of BSDM, Behind Closed Doors is the best example of the genre: a couple is invited to a mysterious mansion, where the husband in question is about to discover a thing or two about his perverted sexual desires. While you, even though you have interest enough to read this far, might be put off by the overtly sexual contents of series like Behind Closed Doors, it might be worth asking: is there any substantial difference between this and any given harem anime? We have a guy, surrounded by maidens willing to please his every desire, just like the high school girls flocks mindlessly around the main protagonist in any given harem series, just without all that suggestive bullshit. Or am I overthinking things here?

5. Saishuu Chikan Densha (Midnight Sleazy Train)

Midnight Sleazy Train dvd
[Information episodes=" 3 " aired=" Sep 2002 - Feb 2003 "]

A recurring image in almost every hentai or slightly erotic anime (perhaps with the exception of Virgin Night, see below) is that of the chikan – euphemistically translated to ‘Sleazy in the English title – the person which approximately 40% of all billboards on Japanese trains warns you about. A conductor that has probably watched one too many a sexual assault on his shift, who probably also is getting too old for this shit, decides to turn his train into a swinger’s party on wheels, giving birth to the mythological eponymous Midnight Sleazy Train, Crazy Train’s perverted cousin (bad pun is bad). As a synopsis online poetically puts it: ‘get ready to climb aboard… the sleazy train is COMING’ [sic].

4. Zettai Junshu☆Kyousei Kozukuri Kyokashou!!

Kyousei Kozukuri Kyokashou dvd
[Information episodes=" 2 " aired=" Dec 2012 - Jun 2013 "]

If not for anything else, we got to give the creators of this anime credits for the ridiculous premise they managed to come up with: In a reverse China scenario, the male/female ratio is at a critical low, leading the government to issue a card for the seemingly only guy left in town – under the ‘New Sex Law’ he gets a permit to sleep with any girl he might desire, as long as he remembers to carry his ‘Free Sex License’. There’s no such thing as a free lunch though – in an obvious reference to the biblical figure of Onan, who for spilling ‘his seed on the ground’ was put to death, the ‘lucky guy’ is required to make a positive contribution to the country’s declining population – every single time. In addition to its thought-provoking story and provocative art style, Zettai Junshu has also been noted for its rare inclusion of strong, intriguing female characters, as well as its many, often satirical, references to contemporary Japanese society (or maybe I’m just trollin’).

3 . Choujin Densetsu Urotsukidouji (Urotsukidoji: Legend of the Overfiend)

Choujin Densetsu Urotsukidouji dvd
[Information episodes=" 3 " aired=" Jan 1987 – Apr 1989 "]

If we choose to interpret ‘Hentai’ in the Japanese sense of the word, as meaning twisted or perverted, Urotsukidoji is probably the closest we’ll ever get. The OVA was based by the works of one of the pioneers of Hentai manga, Maeda Toshio, and is also where the tentacle r*** made its, if not first, at least most memorable appearance. Its tale of the revival of a Super God – the titular Overfiend – as well as epic battles between demons, humans and men-beasts places it in the sci-fi fantasy genre, and it also features a fair share of horror and guts, as well as, of course, tons of twisted sex scenes. It is said only to be rivaled by Akira when it comes to influential anime abroad, and even though this probably is an overstatement, it definitely deserves its status as an anime classic – Urotsukidoji is the epitomization of ‘Hentai’, in the original Japanese meaning of the word.

2. Virgin Night

Sorry, we cannot show the image.
[Information episodes=" 1 " aired=" June 2001 "]

As can most definitely NOT be said about all of the other anime on the list, this is one of the few erotic anime that I would actually consider finishing (I’m sorry if I ruined the impression that I’ve actually sat through every single episode of all this crap and consequently lost my credibility with the hentai community). Again, the title tells the story: virgin night (alternatively ‘First Night’) is about the first sexual encounter between two teenagers that have been in a long-term serious relationship. Compared to the other entries on this list, it might seem like a light-weight, but in terms of story this is probably as good as it gets. One of the few – if not the only – erotic anime to receive mainstream appraisal, this is the anime you want to watch if you want to fool your date that you’re doing the 2015 version of ‘reading playboy for the articles’, or if you’re genuinely interested in a good anime.

Virgin Night wallpaper

1. Enbo (Taboo Charming Mother)

Enbo dvd
[Information episodes=" 6 " aired=" Nov 2003 - Nov 2005 "]

The title makes a nod to the classic Taboo movie series from the final days of the ‘golden age’ of American pornographic movies, and both the original and the anime share incest as a common theme. I won’t question the questionable subject matter here, I’ll simply just recognize the fact that it in some circles is regarded as the paragon of hentai, and a classic of the genre. Now for the plot: a mother, Misako, who of course is unsatisfied with her and her absent-minded husband’s sex life, starts receiving creepy calls from a stranger, and as that wasn’t enough, she and her stepson engages in a sexual relationship. And as her younger sister also eventually gets dragged into this twisted relationship, drama ensures. As before mentioned on this list, one should be cautious of drawing any conclusions on ‘Japanese culture’ based on this kind of source material, and rather see it as an example of how a business that’s seen profit fall significantly over the past few years choses to opt for shock value to please its consumers.

Shout out to all the BL lovers: let’s check out our top 10 shounen-ai anime! And to those new believers, feel free to spend your late nights binging away on these yummy boys. Trust me, it ain’t easy making the top 10 pick. I’m sure some will be familiar and some not so much. Nevertheless, let’s get down to business and check out the top 10 shounen-ai anime!

10. Gravitation

Gravitation dvd
[Information episodes=" 13 " aired=" Oct 2000 - Jan 2001 "]

Here, we have an anime about Shindou Shuichi, an aspiring pop idol, who struggles to make the deadlines for his debut with chart-topping songs. Shuichi meets Yuki Eiri, who crushes his dreams by saying Shuichi is talentless. Initially, propelled by a thirst for revenge, Shuichi completes his song but ends up diving deeper into a relationship with Yuki. There’s no need to defend why Gravitation makes the top 10 list. As a Shounen-ai fan, this anime was probably the first boy-on-boy anime you’d encountered as you began your BL journey. With its adorable pairings and storyline set in the music-industry, Gravitation sets the bar high for the rest of the Shounen-ai anime to come.

9. Gakuen Heaven

Gakuen Heaven dvd
[Information episodes=" 13 " aired=" April 2006 - June 2006 "]

High school setting, student council involvement, uniformed boys, this anime is simply waiting for you to gobble it up. It has almost every element a typical harem anime would, which entails drama, miscommunication and romance. Plot-twist: the protagonist is a guy and so are all the characters vying for his attention. While there are multiple manga volumes that predict different outcomes for the main character, Itou Keita, the anime only chooses one pairing to focus on. Gakuen Heaven makes the 9th spot on our list because there are lots of bishounen in school uniforms. If that doesn't take the cake, then the storyline is also quite entertaining. The protagonist struggles to find his uniqueness to belong in the school and along the way, he creates intense relationships with the others. He will end up falling for the right guy (if you are rooting for the right team). Not to mention, the OP is incredibly catchy.

8. Tight-Rope

Tight-Rope dvd
[Information episodes=" OVA 2 " aired=" May 2012- June 2012 "]

Manga turned anime, Tight-Rope is one of Natsume Isaku’s popular creations. Natsume sensei’s manga are always delightful to read with her aggressive seme’s and reluctant uke’s. Tight-Rope tells a story set in the world of the yakuza where the heir of a yakuza family, Oohara Ryunosuke, rejects his inheritance to protect his childhood friend, Satoya Naoki. If you like Shounen-Ai, you cannot miss this anime. The boys remain quite brutish as they are yakuza and speak with a refreshing Kansai accent! Nevertheless, audiences still get to enjoy boy-on-boy heated make-out sessions that are dribbled through out the anime. With only two episodes, Tight-Rope leaves us begging for more and we can only hope to see more of Natsume sensei’s works adapted into anime in the future!

7. Loveless

loveless dvd
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" April 2005 - June 2005 "]

Here is an anime that focuses beyond its Shounen-ai genre. Loveless features a twelve year-old, Aoyagi Ritsuka who loses his older brother mysteriously. Ritsuka then meets Agatsuma Soubi and uncovers his brother’s involvement in a fighting pair. Soubi being the “Fighter,” needs Ritsuka to inherit his older brother’s role as the “Sacrifice.” Their relationship develops beyond that of just a fighting pair. The art in Loveless is plain beautiful, making it delightful to watch. However, this anime makes top 7 because it goes beyond its shounen-ai genre. Instead of a typical romance tale, Loveless features supernatural elements and its characters are extremely layered (like a freaking onion). This is certainly one to check out even if you're not a shounen-ai fan as it actually has a plot-line.

6. Uragiri wa Boku no Namae wo Shiteru (Betrayal Knows My Name)

uragiri wa boku no namae wo shitteiru dvd
[Information episodes=" 24 " aired=" April 2010 - September 2010 "]

Uragiri wa Boku no Namae wo Shiteru is an anime about Giou Yuki who has a supernatural ability to read people’s emotions. He becomes troubled with his mysterious powers and meets Crosszeria Luka, a sexy demon (dura). The boy-love tones exist but you really have to dig deep and read between the lines. Marking the midpoint of our top 10 list is Uraboku, short for its long title. Uraboku has almost all the elements of a good anime. It has sexy demons, save-the-world drama, fighting, adventure and (gay) romance. Plus, lots and lots of bishounens, AKA beautiful boys. Although the plot-line leaves much to be desired. So if eye candy is not enough for you, then pack your bags and head out.

5. Hybrid Child

hybrid child dvd
[Information episodes=" OVA 4 " aired=" October 2014 - January 2015 "]

So, Nakamura Shungiku probably outdid herself this time, with a short series about android dolls and their relationship with their masters. While the doll and master spiel is not new, Hybrid Child stands out as it tells the story of three interconnected pairs in the most dramatic and tear-jerking way. The first two stories revolve around the struggle between the masters and their android to find love – both incredibly sweet and typical of Nakamura sensei. However, the last story is one to remember. Set in a historical background, this arc is about the android creator, Kuroda, and his regretful love with Tsukishima, a fallen swordsman. Be warned: there’ll be sand in your eyes.

4. Patalliro!

Patalliro dvd
[Information episodes=" 49 " aired=" April 1982 - May 1983 "]

If you haven’t watched Patalliro!, you definitely must check it out. Patalliro! is an anime about the boy-king, Patalliro, of the country of Marinera. With the sudden death of his father, Patalliro becomes the heir and faces many threats to his life. As he attempts to evade death, a gorgeous English M16 agent, Major Jack Bancoran joins him. The two make a dynamic pair which is hard to find in today’s anime. Spearheading the dawn of shounen-ai in anime, Patalliro! has a comedic story with lots of bishounen. With all the current anime styles, Patalliro!’s art style is indeed unique and gives audiences a blast from the past. Not sold yet? The boys wear purple eyeshadow and they have hair so long that it touches the floor. Also, Patalliro is so sassy and witty, his gags are sure to make you laugh out loud.

3. Love Stage!!

love stage dvd
[Information episodes=" 10 " aired=" July 2014 - September 2014 "]

Love Stage!! is one of the many lovechildren between Eiki Eiki and Taishi Zaou. Adapted from its popular running manga, Love Stage!! is an anime about handsome pop idols, super stars and a shy but talented budding actor. If you like Gravitation, you’ll probably enjoy Love Stage!! as well. The crisp and bright artwork elevates the shounen-ai genre. Now, we’re in a new playing field of character development and comedic relief. Sexually tame but fear note, there’ll be plenty of kissing. So, let your imaginations run wild. I’m sure we’re all hoping there’ll be a season 2 in the making!

2. Junjou Romantica

Junjou Romantica dvd
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" April 2008 - June 2008 "]

Finally, top 2 of our list is most likely the king of shounen-ai. With three different arcs interchanging throughout the anime, Junjou Romantica features pairings that are not only unique in their own ways, but also hilarious to cheer on. This gift bestowed upon us by Nakamura Shungiku features three strong pairs that reveal their glorious boy-on-boy loving through much obstacles and drama. The main pair being Usami Akihiko and Takahashi Misaki, shows the most drama as Misaki fervently tries to evade Usami’s advances and hides his growing feelings. This anime is in its third season, so HURRAH! I hope it never ends. If you’re new to shounen-ai, go forth and binge away.

Junjou Romantica wallpaper

1. Sekaiichi Hatsukoi (World’s Greatest First Love)

sekaiichi hatsukoi poster
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" April 2011 - June 2011 "]

Sekaiichi Hatsukoi tops the list with not much gap between Junjou Romantica. Both creations of Nakamura sensei, Sekaiichi continues to take place in the publishing world of Marukawa Shoten. True to its title, this anime is about the rekindled first love between Onodera Ritsu and Takano Masamune. Both characters, though an unfortunate misunderstanding, separated in their high-school years, but are unexpectedly reunited in their publishing office as boss and subordinate. Why is Sekaiichi placed first? Most likely due to the way the story draws back into both characters’ paths and reveals their suppressed feelings towards each other. Seeing a rekindled relationship come to life is incredibly satisfying, albeit it drags out a little. Nevertheless, Masamune is the ultimate seme and it’s nice to see such an aggressive yet stoic character fall deeply in love. As for Ritsu, the way his resolve crumbles is simply satisfying to watch.

Sekaiichi Hatsukoi wallpaper

That concludes our top 10 list. I hope you’ll get a chance to check out these Shounen-ai anime, if you have not already done so. Frustratingly, there is still such a lack of good shows in the shounen-ai genre, and it would be wonderful to see our choices expand in the near future. Nevertheless, let’s celebrate the animated boy-on-boy anime we have now! And, leave your comments down below on your favourite shounen-ai anime and why. :)

Preview (No Spoilers)

Eikichi Onizuka, is one of the people you least expect to be a teacher. A formerly renowned leader of the Onibaku bike gang, Onizuka decides to pursue his career as a school teacher even though his reasons are questionable at first. But when he was assigned as the homeroom teacher of the troublesome class 3-4 at Seirin (Holy Forest) Academy private school, Onizuka is faced with numerous problems as he tries to change how things work in school and become the Great Teacher Onizuka.

Character Bio

Eikichi Onizuka, is the last thing you would expect a teacher should be. Onizuka is a formerly famous leader of the Onibaku bike gang (notorious reputation) who isn’t that bright, has a dirty/lewd mind, yet his determination and how he does things never fails to inspire you. Onizuka is a breath of fresh air in terms of how he deals with problems, both his own and his students’. He teaches valuable lessons about life to his students but in an absurd and extreme way. What’s great about Onizuka is that he stays true to himself and isn’t afraid of what’s being perceived as appropriate by society. Considering his past, the last thing he is afraid of is the rules! “Eikichi Onizuka, 22 years old, Nice to meet you!”

EikichiOnizuka wallpaper 2

Character Highlights

1. His Loyalty towards his students

1 EikichiOnizuka

Onizuka is very loyal when it comes to his students. Even though at first, class 3-4 at Seirin (Holy Forest) Academy private school is notorious for driving teachers crazy and forcing them to quit, Onizuka’s relentlessness and reactions towards those attempts made the students slowly able to trust him as they find him ‘interesting’. Onizuka has also displayed his loyalty numerous times by risking his own life to save his students, like the time he saved Noboru Yoshikawa from jumping off the school rooftop. Later, Onizuka learns that Noboru was bullied into attempting suicide as he was sexually abused and humiliated by Anko Uehara, a spoiled daughter of the president of the local Parent-Teacher Association. Onizuka helped Noboru gets his revenge by humiliating Anko and her gang back and that leads to trouble as her mother was really upset when she found out about this and demanded that the school fire Onizuka.

2. His stupidity

2 EikichiOnizuka

It might seem obvious that Onizuka isn’t exactly that bright, and as a result, he is often-times easily tricked by his fellow students. One such time involved his whole body getting covered in written ‘spells’ that were meant to free him from a curse (Episode 23 – Superstition). His stupidity knows no bounds but that’s one of the things that you will love him for. Onizuka is truly one-of-a-kind when it comes to being a great teacher.

3. Truly believes in his students

3 EikichiOnizuka

As absurd as Onizuka can be as a teacher, one of the most fundamental things all teachers should have is the ability to truly believe in their students, and Onizuka truly embraces that. One of the cases involve Tomoko Nomura, a student from his class that’s well known for her clumsiness that often causes trouble for others around her. Onizuka was able to help her regain her own confidence by hooking her up with a producer friend of his who ultimately made Tomoko into a celebrity. I’m sure in reality, there are students that struggle with their personal confidence and self-esteem in school, and I think it’s really important for a good teacher to have the ability to turn that around and help regain their confidence.

4. Character Development

4 EikichiOnizuka

It’s really amazing to see how Onizuka progresses throughout the series. He eventually gets to know each student on a personal level. This makes his students able to trust him and pitch in to help him out, even when Onizuka didn’t ask for it. It’s the really strong bond that Onizuka has with his students that makes him so loveable and reliable at the same time. This can be seen in Episode 31 – Destination, as Onizuka is framed in a money embezzlement case and struggles to find a way to pay back the money. His students Noboru and Anko offer to help him by pitching in some money of their own. Noboru even sold his games to get extra money, but Onizuka refuses their help and says, “How can a teacher borrow money from his students?”

5. Spends time with his students

5 EikichiOnizuka

As you can see from the picture above, one of the things Onizuka loves is looking at women. And what better way to spend a normal afternoon than to enjoy an obscene magazine with his students at school. Boys will be boys. In all seriousness, Onizuka spends a lot of his time with his students, whether it be playing around with water filled rockets, or telling silly ghost stories, Onizuka learns to grow alongside his students (it’s his own way to connect with them). Despite all those mischievous acts, Onizuka gains respect from the parents as well. One of which is Tomoko’s parents who own a ramen shop. Onizuka will often get ‘special service’, as in larger beer and whatnot when he comes to visit the shop.

Spoilers!

6 EikichiOnizuka

At the end of the series, Miyabi Aizawa, one of Onizuka’s students who hates teachers because she thinks they’ll all betray their students, was involved in an attempted murder against her previous homeroom teacher. Knowing this, Onizuka confessed in front of the press media that he was the culprit in order to protect Miyabi. Onizuka eventually escaped from the police and ran away to California to continue his career as the Great Teacher Onizuka. Outrageous, fun, reliable, trustworthy. That’s how I would sum up Eikichi Onizuka. Despite not being the ‘appropriate’ type of teacher, Onizuka possesses certain qualities in his own way of teaching lessons to his students. It doesn’t always seem like it’s the ‘right’ way to do things, but at the end of the day, he gets it done. What do you think of Onizuka, do you think he’s the ideal teacher? Do you agree with the points I stated above? Let me know if there are other things you like about Onizuka and leave them in the comments below!

7 EikichiOnizuka

That was fast.
This is way too early for an anime adaptation. I hope this ends within two cours.
It's been awhile since I've been so excited about a new anime adaptation.
There's not enough material, wouldn't the airing date be in Fall next year?
I want the same staff working on One-Punch Man to work on this!

A bit late, why now?
Hope this isn't trolling.
Shaft could produce something good out of this.

It reminds me completely of Gainax' style.
Is that Gurren Lagann?
I could tell that it is Trigger from a mile away.

Déjà Vu? The Asterisk War and Chivalry of a Failed Knight Are Too Similar

What You Need to Know:

  • A Japanese writer has made an analysis of the common themes among The Asterisk War and Chivalry of a Failed Knight from the current season.
  • Both titles are based off light novels, and follow a template-typical plot structure.
  • See the analysis below!

Similarities

  • It is based in a school
  • The protagonist accidentally bumps into the heroine as she's getting changed, leading to a battle that results in the heroine's defeat.
  • The heroines are red-haired princesses, sword wielders specializing in fire magic, and possess tsundere traits.
  • The protagonist appears weak but is actually powerful
  • There is a scene where the heroine defeats a macho axe user.
  • The heroine's elements clash so much that it could be considered a miracle; you would barely notice if either heroine was replaced by the other.

    How to Distinguish the Series

You have to give up attempting to distinguish the heroines from their faces or personalities. In order to correctly distinguish between the two series, a good point to observe are the sizes of the heroines' breasts. The heroine from The Asterisk War has a flat chest, while the heroine from Chivalry of a Failed Knight possesses relatively large breasts.

Can you compare which one contains more ecchi scenes?
I'd rather hear how to distinguish between the Osomatsu brothers.
