The role of the maid is multi-faceted in the world of anime. When you see a maid appear at the side of a character, you know that means they have money; a lot of money. You are also never sure what kind of maid you’re going to get. The maid can be cute, competent, young or old; occasionally they can be a klutz. The maid, more often than not, is a professional capable of doing virtually anything: cooking, cleaning, kung fu, or assassination. Their uniform is a conservative top and a short dress. Their armor is a lace apron.

10. Titta from Madan no Ou to Vanadis (Lord Marksman and Vanadis)

[sourceLink asin="B00NQFEEXA" asin_jp="" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 13 " aired=" Oct. 2014- Dec. 2014 "]

Titta is loaded with threats to any leading anime man’s heart. She is the personal maid to Tigre, the protagonist of the series, as well as his childhood friend. We know how dangerous and determined a childhood friend nurturing a crush can be for any other lady. Titta is also a skilled medic, a big plus when your leading man is also leading an army. She also has the appeal of the twin tails that many of us find irresistible. Titta may be young and she may have a flat chest unlike other mentions on this list, but she has an air of innocence make you want to protect her. Her conservative maids uniform and wholesome maidenly attitude make her like the girl next door if the girl next door was your personal maid. She is perfect for this list due to her assets, which do – after all – include housekeeping.

9. Karen Jankulovski Campione!: Matsurowanu Kamigami to Kamigoroshi no Maou (Campione!)

[Information episodes=" 13 " aired=" Jul. 2012- Sep. 2012 "]

Karen is the personal maid to Erica Blandelli, a knight of an ancient order of magicians that fight rogue gods. Karen is a lot like her employer: 16, attractive, with an inflated sense of danger and the skills to drive like a bat out of hell. She is always at the ready with a weapon for her master or a quick escape when needed. She also has a rather impish sense of humor, gossiping and goading Erica when it comes to romance. The aquamarine hair in the hime haircut may make her seem straight laced but when you look at her eyes you see she has an impish appeal about her. You can just tell that under that blue Victorian looking uniform is a girl comfortable with sexuality. You see an example of this in her willingness to take compromising photos of her master or anyone else. She is the perfect ladies’ maid for a girl like Erica and that’s the key isn’t it? The working relationship and one of absolute trust is what makes a good pairing of master and maid.

8. Mahoro Ando from Mahoromatic (Mahoromatic- Automatic Maiden)

[2_images_in_row character='Andou Mahoro Mahoromatic Automatic Maiden' anime='mahoromatic dvd']

[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" Oct. 2001- Dec 2001 "]

Like many maids on this list, Mahoro can be lethal. She spent her time fighting alien invaders using her super-strength and speed. Did we mention that Mahoro is an android? She’s an android with a fast-approaching expiration date. She finds out she has the ability to extend her operating life if she stops fighting aliens and becomes a maid. Mahoro loves to cook, clean and get really close to her master -- even when he is in the bath. She enjoys every noncombat moment of the simple life and even the occasional moments when her experience on the battlefield is called upon. She revels in her new mission, taking care of a middle school boy named Suguru who lives alone. Mahoro makes it on our list because she cares for her master in a very maternal way and wants to give him the best life possible with whatever life she has left.

7. Leysritt Einzbern from Fate/Stay Night

[2_images_in_row character='Leysritt Einzbern FateStay Night' anime='fatezero DVD']
[sourceLink asin="B00GGSYIGM" asin_jp="" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 24 " aired=" Jan. 2006- Jun. 2006 "]

Leysritt is a maid but she isn’t human, either. She is a Homunclus, a being created by magic. She also serves as a teacher and bodyguard to Illyasviel Von Einzbern. Leysritt is skilled at sorcery and has silky white hair and deep crimson eyes. She has high combat abilities and a willingness to protect her charge, Illya. In dire circumstances she can sacrifice herself to become an artifact of true magic in order to make miracles happen. We see Lysritt and her counterpart Sella working their maidly duties as well as fighting in combat. The two seem to be perfect medieval-era ladies’ maids with their hair and faces partially covered; they’d fit in with King Arthur’s court as ladies-in-waiting or knights. Leysritt is also one of the rare characters to appear as the same person in a completely different anime. Leysritt is one of the characters in Fate Kaleid the Fate/Stay alternate universe spinoff that follows a young Illya in her adventures as a magical girl. The Leysritt in this show seems to have a very different attitude. She may be a maid in the Einzbern household, but she acts like a NEET and spends most of her time lounging on the couch in low-cut tops and short shorts, eating and watching TV.

6. Mitsuki Sawatari, Izumi Sawatari and Anna Kurauchi from Kore ga Watashi no Goshujinsama (He is My Master)

[2_images_in_row character='Mitsuki Sawatari Izumi Sawatari Anna Kurauchi Kore ga Watashi no Goshujinsama' anime='Kore ga Watashi no Goshujinsama dvd']
[sourceLink asin="B00099C1N6" asin_jp="" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" Apr. 2005- Jun. 2005 "]

We kind of have a nice threesome here in He is My Master, and that makes it a must on any list about maids. Mitsuki Sawatari, Izumi Sawatari and Anna Kurauchi are all teenage maids at the house of an extremely rich and perverted teenage boy named Yoshitaka Nakabayashi. The girls are all forced to wear revealing maid uniforms and are frequently subject to harassment. Izumi is the most normal of the three with a level head and explosive temper, often directed at their boss. In their first meeting she called him a perv and tossed him across the lawn. Did we mention she was on his front porch in her underwear? Mitsuki is Izumi’s younger sister and is not as worried about the revealing uniform as her sister, only commenting that it’s rather plain. She is also a little more accepting of the way she is treated by their employer and is willing to exploit her own sister in order to make a buck. The final in the trio is Anna, who has a crush on Izumi and she just may be the most perverted one of the girls. She falls in line with Yoshitaka’s way of thinking, especially when it involves peeping on Izumi. We can’t say much for their cleaning ability other than it does the job. Besides, they weren’t hired to clean as much as provide eye candy for a 14 year old rich boy.

Elfreda, or Effie, is maid and wet nurse to the loli-succubus Princess Lotte. We’ll give you a minute to let that imagery sink in. She is fittingly part cow and has a huge chest and thinks nothing of it. Effie has the ability to produce large quantities of high-quality milk she serves to the princess and any thirsty guests. She has a somewhat bawdy sense of humor and doesn’t mind teasing the other staff with it. She is a bit of a 90s girl, wearing a choker. Well, it’s really a bell, a symbol of her bovine heritage. Her short pink hair, low cut royal blue maid uniform letting you see all the cleavage the censors will allow and her white tail rising up from under the short skirt make her a vision of maid-ly virtue. We chose Effie because she’s a maid you can have fun with thanks to her sense of humor, skill as a maid, and her unique ability to provide milk with an apple flavor.

4. Tsukidate Chiyo from Strawberry Panic

[2_images_in_row character='Tsukidate Chiyo Strawberry Panic' anime='Strawberry Panic dvd']
[sourceLink asin="B007RVUDOI" asin_jp="" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 26 " aired=" Apr. 2006- Sep. 2006 "]

Chiyo attends St. Miator’s Girls’ Academy, one of the three exclusive all-girl Catholic schools on Astera Hill. The strange, strict hierarchy of the school makes her become the “room temp” for Aio Nagisa and Suzumi Tamao. The role is very much like a maid; she’s a freshman who cleans and cares for senior students in return for study help and mentorship. In the world of Strawberry Panic that study help often includes biology, a subject she is more than willing to review with Nagisa. She may be klutzy but does her best to take care of her Nagisa-onee-sama (big sister Nagisa) and is willing to learn all she has to teach. Chiyo makes the list because of the boxes she ticks: young, shy, innocent, impressionable – and did we mention works in the library? Her short pink hair, low cut royal blue maid uniform letting you see all the cleavage the censors will allow and her white tail rising up from under the short skirt make her a vision of maid-ly virtue. We chose Effie because she’s a maid you can have fun with thanks to her sense of humor, skill as a maid, and her unique ability to provide milk with an apple flavor.

Angelina is the second student we meet at the prestigious Yuihime Girls’ Private Academy (now transitioning to become a co-ed school). She stands out by the gates in a maid uniform with a broom in hand. She tries to welcome the students, but she’s barely acknowledged by her fellow classmates. Ange, as she calls herself, introduces herself to the protagonist Shingo as a stray maid; a girl on a mission to find that one special person she will want to devote her life to serving. She makes the list because of her willingness to please and never put her feelings first. If there is something she can to do to prove she will be the greatest maid to any master, she’ll do it. She is a bit of a klutz and a goof and is not the most effective feather in the duster, struggling in subjects like math and science. Ange’s devotion and dedication to her job as a maid – which isn’t a profession but a calling – is why she is one of the best.

Myucel is the personal maid of the Japanese Ambassador to the Holy Eldant Empire. She is a half-elf and half-human in a world where that distinction makes you a second-class citizen. She has self-esteem problems and attempts to hide her ears, not that many men would spend too much time looking at her ears. She wears an off-the-shoulder maid uniform with a rather short, ruffled skirt. She’s illiterate but smart and determined, taking the time to learn Japanese. She’s very attached to the young Ambassador Shinichi Kanou. We find that she is more than capable of defending him with offensive and defensive magic she used while serving in the army of the Eldant Empire. Siesta is a maid at the Tristain Academy in the kingdom of Tristain in the world of Halkeginia. Her work is hard and her life isn’t easy, especially when you consider that the Academy is a magic academy filled with the children of nobles. She accepts her lot in life until, after a mistake made during a magical ceremony, a boy from Japan ends up in Tristain. The boy, Saito, whom Siesta develops a deep love for, inspires her to stand up for herself and the other peasants. We love Siesta for her kindness, her cooking, her willingness to take on any task in her purview no matter how difficult, and her ample bosom. We also appreciate her determination to stand firm in her love for Saito and not be pushed aside by the noble Louise, the other girl vying for Saito’s love. Siesta, especially after being appointed by the Queen to be Saito’s maid, believes her life lies with him. She never lets him sleep alone, even when Louise is in his bed.

Closing

The preceding top ten only scratch the surface of maids in anime. You might also notice that on this list they are all young, cute and make you think naughty things. You otherwise might have seen some extremely capable maids like Yiriko Sudo from Lance N’ Masques or Miyuki Kujo from Shomen Sample on this list. The first lesson here is it’s best not to judge a maid only by the way she fulfills her duties, but the way she fills out her uniform. The second lesson is that you can find a maid for all your tastes. You can get one who will wait on you hand and foot or who likes to stomp on your hand with her foot. The third lesson is she may be cute, she may be sweet, but never, never get in the way of her doing her job.

[Editorial Tuesday] Why Berserk's 3D Animation Will Actually Help the Adaptation

As a huge Berserk fan, I was cautiously excited when news of an upcoming series broke. After The first PV for the upcoming adaptation was revealed a lot of criticism surfaced of the clunky looking 3D animation which had low frame-rates and bulky looking models that seem to plague a lot of the sub-par animation work done in 3D these days. This is what the 'cautious' part of my excitement was worried about. Now while my fears as a Berserk fan were somewhat assuaged by the second PV, still a lot of people worried out there. 3D animation has gotten a bad reputation around the anime community, and for pretty good reasons. People were worried that a series like Berserk would be ruined by 3D, and while time will tell if the new adaptation will succeed or not, there's actually reason to look forward to the use of 3D in the series. To demonstrate this, first I want to talk about the first two adaptations in regards to their presentation, and what are some strengths and weaknesses of their animation.

[ad_top2 class="mt40"]

The 1997 Series

Guts Berserk wallpaper
[sourceLink asin="B003YUBZ5C" asin_jp="" text="" url="" ]

Many fans remember fondly and were introduced to Berserk by the original 1997 series which followed the Golden Age Arc. And while the original Berserk anime overall does adapts a lot of what's fantastic about the Manga, it's visuals were always pretty disappointing. To state it simply, the original 1997 anime wasn't capable of adapting many of the large-scale fighting sequences into consistent, good-looking animation. For example, one of the most iconic fights in the Golden Age Arc, where Gut's take's on 100 soldiers to make way for Casca's escape, is plagued by still frames. The use of still frames should bother fans of anime because the point of anime is to... well, animate. Though many of the still frames, produced under the helm of legendary art director Shichiro Kobayashi, look beautiful, animation is supposed to put characters and objects in motion, and this doesn't happen as much as it should in this series. Aside from the still frames,Too many battle scenes resort to characters standing in place. They hack and slash at each other with the same movements over and over as if they're trying to commit these mechanics to muscle memory. Not only was the animation in battle scenes lacking, but there wasn't much in the way of expressive character animation as well. The characters often feel static and rigid and don't move with a lot of life to them. This would be a problem for any series, but for Berserk, which utilizes a lot of body posture and facial expressions to show character emotion, it's especially troubling.

The 2D/3D Hybrid Film Trilogy

Berserk-Wallpaper-HD-1920x1200
[sourceLink asin="B007HIHGW8" asin_jp="" text="" url="" ]

Now how does the new film trilogy compare to the original in terms of 2D animation? In many ways, much better. The scene where Guts first awakes in the camp of the hawks is a great example. The animation is detailed and fluid, and you can see this right from the beginning of the film. Look at how life at camp, different soldiers lounging around, tending to horses and cooking. You can see it in how Griffith's hair moves and how his facial expressions react to Guts. The animation does a better job of capturing the subtleties of emotion. One of my favorite examples of this is during the 100 man slayer scene in the second film. Guts is cajoling the soldiers, and saying that if they tried anything on Casca, Well... they'd lose more than they bargained for. If you look at Casca in the background while Guts is talking, she's not just standing still. You see a range of emotions in her body language and facial expressions. She looks a little bit flustered and caught off guard when Guts begins talking. Then she looks a little irritated, but in the end gives him a little knock on the head, almost playfully. Sequences of this is why anime means so much to me as a fan. Sequences of shots that can show a range of emotions, and clearly illustrate how characters you care about feel are one of the marks of good animation. That in particular feels more like Sakuga to me than just some guy swinging a sword fluidly. This is a good example of the quality of the 2D animation throughout the movies, which is impressive. The problem of course... is that it's not all in 2D and the 3D animation in the series has some serious quality issues. The models are bulky and don't look great even standing still. In movements, they look slow and clumsy and feel more at home in a PS2 game than in anime. Sometimes, you have characters hand-drawn and 3D figures in the same scene, and it just looks awkward. However, the use of 3D did allow for the battle sequences to look and feel more like the battle sequences in the Manga than what the 1997 series managed. There's so many models on screen in movement that it actually feels like a real battle. This made scenes from the first battle in golden age, through the attack on Doldrey to the eclipse, feel much more frenetic and engaging. They only managed to achieve this when characters or the camera were moving around at a pace where you really couldn't focus much on the 3D figures themselves.

[ad_middle class="mt40 mb40"]

What Can this Comparison Tell Us about the Possibility of the 2016 series?

Image 3-Griffith Berserk Capture
[sourceLink asin="B007HIHGW8" asin_jp="" text="" url="" ]

Now I have a point to make in criticizing the 1997 series so much, and I don't think it's a bad series, but In the broader 2D vs 3D debate, fans often compare something like Redline or the Vampire Hunter D film to the dragon scene in the original Fate/stay night adaptation. There's no doubt that 3D has been responsible for some awful looking animation, but this doesn't mean all 2D is automatically better. The 1997 series, in many places, looks very sub-par. Even anime that is remembered fondly can still have very serious presentation issues. I would say that the Berserk film series, purely in terms of presentation alone, did a better job of adapting the manga. Moreover, I believed that the 3D animation while having huge flaws, still did help the production team overall. Large set-piece battle sequences are intricate and require a huge amount of time to pull off, and each film required a number of them. The use of 3D, though imperfect, did give the battles a sense of scale that made them feel more like the battles in the Manga than the all 2D 1997 series. And I think it's reasonable to assume this has helped the animators make the 2D scenes so beautiful given the limits of time and budget.

Image 4-Guts Berserk Capture
[sourceLink asin="B00CDHBV10" asin_jp="" text="" url="" ]

The time constraints of a television series are even greater, where the weakly episode deadlines become an even bigger hurdle for a studio to handle. This is why films and OVA's having higher animation quality is often to case, there's simply more time to put into a smaller run time. One of the reasons 3D is widely used in anime today, is that it helps studio's save time on things like vehicles and background characters, in order for them to focus on other areas. I think it's reasonable to assume that, unless a world-class, all-star team of animators and other production staff all left their studios to work on Berserk, that adapting large parts of the manga would be too big a task to handle without 3D animation. Frankly put, any animation studio is going to need the help from the use of some 3D to pull of a Berserk adaptation for a television series.

The AnimeJapan 2016 PV and Other 3D Done Right

Image 5-Guts_Anime_AV Berserk Capture
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Berserk Trailer" url="" ]

One of the things that gives me some hope about the future of the new adaptation was the PV released during AnimeJapan 2016. Particularly the use of one, very simple, but very clever design feature in the character designs. The Shading on the characters is reminiscent of pencil strokes and gives a very manga-like feeling. It's similar to the way designs are done in the sports series Haikyuu!! and Diamond no Ace, though those are 2D designs, they give off the same manga-esque feeling. This a great feature because though it's in 3D, the designs are reminiscent of hand-drawn figures and makes the 3D models look a lot less glaring. I hope this is part of a trend of 3D animation improving throughout the anime industry, and one series in particular that stood out to me was the second season of Sidonia no Kishi (Knights of Sidonia.) The first season of Knights of Sidonia was jarring to get through partially because of the 3D animation. Models moved awkwardly and at a sluggish pace, which is again similar to the common criticisms of 3D. However, the Mecha battle scenes in the series were consistently well done. In the Second Season, there was a lot of improvement in the animation and that word 'Improvement' is key in how this relates to Berserk. Knights of Sidonia Season 2 had more fluid movement which made the characters feel like it had much more life in them. Some of the action sequences, all done in 3D, were absolutely fantastic, and are a highlight of the series. They often featured a huge number of Mech's moving at once and very fluid movements of the camera which gave a very frenetic feel to everything. There was the use of a lot of effects on the screen such as lens-flare, which made you feel like there was a lot to look at. The Lighting was done exceptionally well, always fitting where the scene was set which gave the series an overall better look. But what do cinematic lighting and various effects have to do with animation? What it did was take the focus off of 3D and put into other aspects of the presentation in ways that made the series more visually engaging. This, coupled with improvements in the 3D animation itself, made Knights of Sidonia one of my favorite series in the year from a visual perspective and it's important to note that this is a development in the Second Season. That improvement makes me think that the more time a studio spends with 3D, the more they can do with it. The 2016 Berserk series is slated for two cours, and the first episode is set to air in July. With what we've already seen in the PV, I think the Berserk series has a solid foundation with regards to build on. Moreover, since the series is set to adapt the Black Swordsman Arc, this means it's likely that the series will get through about half of the Conviction Arc (unless the demon known as filler rears it's ugly head). There is a lot of Berserk to adapt, not counting the parts that Miura hasn't even published yet. What I hope is this translates to a studio that can, as time goes on, always keep improving their 3D animation, similar to the Improvements Polygon Pictures made with Sidonia no Kishi S2

Final Thoughts

Only time will tell whether the new Berserk series will be successful or not. And while I hope it's worthy of the manga, there are plenty of things that could go wrong. This is the Russian roulette of any adaptation, and indeed every work of fiction, that's even been made. For all we know, the animation could be stellar, but the other parts of the series could be a bust. However, the point of this article is that the 3D shouldn't be an immediate deal breaker for you. There are good things that 3D brings to a project, especially if it's the quality of the 3D we saw in the AnimeJapan PV. The 1997 adaptation, while overall good, was proof that a project being solely 2D didn't necessarily mean it would look good. Moreover, the film series proved that an adaptation with the use of 3D, even not particularly good CG, could bring positive things to the adaptation. I would love for Berserk to be given a hollywood budget, and have all the best animators and staff members in the industry leave their studio to work on it. This is because Berserk deserves it. But alas, anime works under tighter restrictions, and despite this, a lot of the time, anime comes through with more and more great series. In the end, all we can hope for is that the new series delivers. Berserk fans, we've finally gotten off THE boat, but don't hop off the boat of the new series just yet.

[Editorial Tuesday] Ghost in the Shell’s Live Action Adaptation: Whitewashing Won't Be the Only Problem

[sourceLink asin="" text="TAHLKA NEWS" url="http://english.tahlkanews.com/takeshi-joins-scarlett-johansson-ghost-shell/33051" ]

Waves of criticism swelled in and out whenever news of the new Ghost in the Shell live action adaptation hit the surface. There was a great deal of controversy when it was announced that the role of Motoko Kusanagi was given to Scarlett Johansson. Anime fans were worried whether or not the adaptation would stay true to the roots of the manga/anime, while many more were simply critical that the film had given an Japanese role to a white actress, without any special connection to the original work. The long and short of it was that no one was particularly happy with this news in the west. Now it's worth noting that some in Japan have said that they're simply happy with any live-action adaptation, and saying they weren't expecting a Japanese or Asian actress to begin with. While, from a Japanese perspective, it's a point of pride when one of your works get adapted abroad, as a western anime fan, my perspective is much more negative. I think that, aside from casting ScarJo, the fact that they're mixing Hideo Kuze and the Laughing man into one character, they're going to lose a lot of the nuance that made both seasons of Stand Alone Complex great. And finally, if they wanted to make an original film that was a tribute to or inspired by Ghost in the Shell, they should have done that and made an original story, rather than simply backing on the name.

[ad_top2 class="mt40"]

Ghost in the Shell's and Anime's Influence on Film

Ghost in the shell was largely influential for both audiences and filmmakers alike in the west. Ghost in the Shell is known primarily as the film that influenced the Matrix, with the Wachowski brothers going so far as to show the original Ghost in the Shell film in order to help pitch their ideas. Steven Spielberg had said the original film was 'one of his favorite stories', and sci-films that he directed less than a decade after Ghost in the Shell first aired, Minority Report and A.I., were influenced by the film. Likewise, James Cameron sung the film's praises calling it 'a stunning work of speculative fiction, the first truly adult animation film to reach a level of literary and visual excellence.'

ghost in the shell Capture
[sourceLink asin="" text="Ghost in the shell Movie Image" url="" ]

This wasn't the first or the last Anime that influenced a western filmmaker. Black Swan, borrowed Heavily from Satoshi Kon's Perfect Blue, including shot composition that was directly referencing Kon's film. Another Satoshi Kon Film, Paprika, was influential in Christopher Nolan's Inception film. Guillermo del Toro stated that Pacific Rim was heavily influenced by Mecha anime like Patlabor and Tetsujin 28. These are just some examples and this brings me to my main point. These are all interesting films with unique stories to tell, and I think many fans of anime and manga specifically appreciate the influences that went into them. Every artist has an influence, and thus every director, writer and actor is coming from a list of experiences they've had with their art that made her or him want to get into that work, or left a lasting impression on how that medium can be used. I think it's more natural for people to be given the freedom and creative license to do something they're influenced by, rather than just remaking the original. In fact, an entirely new work doesn't have many of the same problems that remakes do, with fans of the original having specific ideas and conceptions about what a remake should do, if it should even be made in the first place. My sentiment, I think, can be summarized thusly, if I wanted to see a Western take on Ghost in the Shell, I would look at the films and other media that were influenced by it. But if I wanted more Ghost in the Shell, I would wish for Oshii and his team, or the Stand Alone Complex team, to adapt more of Shirow's manga. As a big Ghost in the shell fan, either would have me more intrigued than a Hollywood remake.

Industry Problems, Going for a product rather than art.

One thing I understand about the film business in the United States is just that, a business. And we have to understand that the interest of this business is, first and foremost, making a product that will give the company a profit. Hopefully, along the lines, the staff behind the film will do something artistically interesting, but again, the prime concern of the industry is profit, not art. I don't think that this article can properly touch on all the ways it would benefit artistic mediums like anime, film and television if we decoupled it from the profit motive. I'm not saying that Hollywood films can't do anything interesting artistically, but just as anime is filled with cash-grab adaptations, and rehashing archetypes to pander to Otaku, Hollywood has it's own problems with it's big budget films. It's worth pointing out that the original Ghost in the Shell film had a budget of $10 million. Even by adjusting for inflation, it's a modest price, especially considering the huge amount of money poured into Hollywood blockbusters. This money poured in often becomes more of a creative liability, as studios have to make back the large investment and are incentivized to only appeal to what's broadly popular, leading to a lot of homogeneity in films today. In fact, casting ScarJo is directly related to this, as her popularity ensures that the movie will make some money back on it's investment. Many critics of the Marvel films have pointed out how the films adhere to a rule of having an action scene every 20 minutes to ensure people will want to sit through it. And the recent criticisms of the upcoming DC film adaptation of Suicide Squad have pointed out that the direction seems to be emulating marvels style in order to bring home the money. Just as the limited amount of money in anime means that a lot of studios try to bank on the name of a successful adaptation, rather than doing something original, Hollywood studios do the same. They cling to past practices and are less incentivized to innovate.

[ad_middle class="mt40 mb40"]

Fusing characters and missing Side Stories. The loss of complexity and nuance.

My suspicion when the adaptation was first announced was that it's Hollywoodization would miss what makes Stand Alone Complex or the original film so great. The first Ghost in the Shell film in particular had more in common with European art films than Hollywood cinema. Moreover, the complexity of either season of Stand Alone Complex would be difficult to fit into film in general, even before you factor in Hollywood standards and practices. If you glance at the IMDB page for the upcoming film, you'll notice that the actor Michael Pitt is listed as playing 'Kuze' and in the character page Kuze's alternative name is listed as 'laughing man.'

ghost in the shell Capture Motoko GiTS
[sourceLink asin="" text="Ghost in the shell Movie Image" url="" ]

This really raises my eyebrows. I know that we don't know for sure how the film will handle this, so this is, at best, educated speculation. I also know that the political nature of Stand Alone Complex leads to different interpretations about who was right and who had the moral high ground. But the fact that Ghost in the Shell was open to interpretation is one of the reasons it's such a good series. In Stand Alone Complex, there were so many shades of Gray that sometimes it's worth questioning if the system that Section 9 was defending was even worth being upheld. The laughing man has been described as someone 'whose singular goal is to wipeout Hanka's advancements in cyber technology, while Section 9 is said to be 'devoted to stopping the most dangerous criminals and extremists.' The Laughing man obviously had no such motives in the original series. He was more concerned with exposing corporate fraud. Moreover, the existence of Section 9 was not about simple counter terrorism. In fact, Section 9 is always at the same time a chess piece in the power struggled between various persons, department and ministries in the Japanese government. The ending of Stand Alone Complex ends with a different force within Japan's public security labyrinth coming after Section 9. In addition, Daisuke Aramaki, after meeting the supposed laughing man, offers him a job at section 9 for his skills as a hacker. It's a complex story with a lot of layers, not a simple good guys stop the terrorists plot.

Ghost in the Shell 2nd Gig wallpaper
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="B009NPBBLU" text="" url="" ]

Likewise, the fact that they're combining the character of Hideo Kuze with the laughing man strikes me, again, totally in the wrong way. Kuze was, in Ghost in the Shell 2nd Gig, not only portrayed as someone who acted out of real moral concerns, for people who were often oppressed. Finally, he serves as a huge connection for Motoko to her path... another layer to her identity, ghost and her cyberization. Kuze and Motoko, the sole survivors of the same accident, both knew each other as children, shortly before they went into their cyberized bodies. So not only are the laughing man and Kuze two wildly different characters, they both have shades of gray and complex relationships with section 9 that don't fit in a simple ‘good vs evil’ narrative. Furthermore, Stand Alone Complex bears the name because some of the episodes are one episode stories which don't really relate, stand-alone, or part of an overarching plot, complex. However, these stand-alone episodes often have a bearing on the overall plot and add valuable new elements to the story. Take the Tachikoma episodes which touch on the nature of A.I. and whether or not they could be considered lifeforms in the way humans are. This is not only a great stand alone episode with fantastic and detailed dialogue about complex technological ideas and philosophy. It's also important for the 'complex' part of the series, where the Tachikoma come through in a big way. Taking side-steps to delve into dense sections where the intersection between humanity and technology is considered a hallmark of Ghost in the Shell. Is a film really going to be able to replicate this? Moreover, the first film did this with a strong art-film feel. These are a huge part of what makes Ghost in the Shell what it is, and I don't think that a Hollywood adaptation, at least from the developments we learned and the way they're altering the continuity, will be able to deliver a proper adaptation.

Concluding

Now, while I didn't touch the issue of whitewashing much in the article, instead I focused on others areas, I still want to emphasize now that I think the whitewashing of Ghost in the Shell is a huge problem. News developed not too long ago that the studio made attempts to alter ScarJo's face with CGI in order to make her look 'more asian.' But if the studio wanted the actress to look asian, the common sense thing to do would be to hire an Asian actress for the role. Not only is Motoko being played by a white actress, but Bato and others are as well, and a key character like Togusa does not even show up in the IMDB character page for the film. There's so many things for Ghost in the Shell fans to be worried about, aside from all the issues with it's casting. I hope you enjoyed reading this, and I hope that the final product isn't a mockery of all that Ghost in the Shell has done. What worries do you have about the film? What do you think about the casting? As always, we want to hear from you in the comments below.

Maes Hughes Preview (No Spoilers)

In a world where Alchemy exists, the Elric brothers, Edward and Alphonse, decided to commit the ultimate taboo in Alchemy, and that is to perform the act of human transmutation. When their efforts backfired, both brothers lost parts of their body. In order to restore their bodies, the Elric brothers decides to join Military to become State Alchemist and further research ways to get back their bodies.

Maes Hughes Bio

Lt. Colonel Maes Hughes is an Amestrian State Military Officer residing in Central City. During the Ishvalan Extermination Program, Maes Hughes met again with Roy Mustang, his best friends since their time at the military academy, it was at that point that Maes Hughes decides to work under Roy and support him to be the next Fuhrer.

Maes Hughes Highlights

1. His Tendency to Ditch His Work

1 Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood Capture
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="episode 9" url="" ]

In every workplace there in the world, there is always that one guy that is known to be the shirker. In the FMA:B series, Maes Hughes is THAT guy. Perhaps this bad work ethic that Hughes has, is one of the most intriguing things about him, contributing to how this character is so loveable. In episode 9, Hughes was shown ditching work, leaving Sheska with overtime work so that he would be able to visit Edward Elric at the hospital. During his ‘free time’ at work, Hughes tends to brag about his wife and his daughter to his best friend Colonel Mustang, by calling him during work hours, using the army telephone line nonetheless.

2. The Serious side of his personality

2 Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood Capture
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="episode 9" url="" ]

Even though most of the time in the series,Maes Hughes is depicted as jovial, funny, random and somewhat a comic relief, Hughes can be serious at times and wise too. This part of his personality is a rare gem and a cherry-on-top for this character, as most people can relate to his theory and point of view in things. It’s exactly what this character needs as it enables him to touch people on a personal level, and that is a big contributing factor to how Hughes can become one of the most lovable characters in the FMA:B series. One such case occur in episode 9, when Maes Hughes was able to ease Winry’s worry of the Elric Brothers by sharing his perspective as a male individual. “I guess that’s just the way things are. Guys always convey things with actions, not words, so if it’s something tough, they don’t want to others to have to put up with it. They don’t want to worry people, either. So they don’t say it. But even then, if those brothers happen to whine… you comfort them and set them straight. I think that’s perfect.”

3. His Persistency

3 Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood Capture
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="episode 9" url="" ]

Maes Hughes is a genuine and kind type of guy, despite the fact that he can be known to be a forceful person, never taking “no” for an answer, but for the right reasons though. This was shown in episode 9, where he offered his hospitality to Winry who was travelling to Central to visit Edward. Before Winry can say anything, he plain out dragged her from the hospital room. Because of this peculiar trait, Edward remarks him as a kidnapper. This quirky and funny side of Hughes is one of the things that would definitely make you laugh and love him at the same time.

4. Extremely Smart and Attention to Detail

4 Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood Capture
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="episode 10" url="" ]

Behind this comic relief of a character, Maes Hughes is regarded as an extremely smart and detailed individual. In the series, Maes Hughes was the first individual to find out about the link between the riots that happened throughout Amestris and the Philosopher’s Stone. Even when he was confronted by Envy, who was disguising as 2nd Lt. Ross, he was able to see through the disguise immediately, as Envy’s disguise was missing a mole under his left eye. This trait of Hughes becomes a testament to his abilities, earning him praise and respect from the FMA:B community.

5. He Genuinely Loves His Wife and Kid

5 Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood Capture
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="episode 10" url="" ]

As you’d probably realize it by now, Maes Hughes really loves his family, always carrying photos of his wife and daughter with the purpose of bragging about them to other people. His relationship with his family is somewhat an ideal type of relationship that many fans considered cute. Unfortunately, when Envy discovered this, he transformed into Gracia to confuse Hughes, making him hesitate to kill Envy. This allows Envy to shoot Hughes, ultimately killing him. Moments before his death, Hughes mumbles to himself, apologizing to both his wife and daughter that he couldn’t come home. “Elicia… Gracia… I’m sorry… I don’t think I can… keep my promise…” – Maes Hughes

Final Thoughts

Overall, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is an epic anime with well-thought-out characters, each with its own development. Loveable characters such as Maes Hughes and others, have significantly impacted the series overall. Funny, quirky, and emotional. These are the words that can be used to describe Maes Hughes. Although it was heartbreaking to see him die in the series, his death has become one of the most crucial aspects for the plot to unfold. Did it break your heart when Hughes died? Do you agree that Hughes is one of the most loveable characters in the FMA:B series? How would you picture the perfect ending for Maes Hughes? Leave them in the comments below!

boku no pico dvd
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="B000GFLINC" text="" url="" ]

**This article contains mature content not suitable for minors! Must be 18 year of age or older!**

Boku no Pico is one of those titles that nearly all fans of anime have heard of, even if they have never seen it or are not interested in it – it’s just that famous. Which is quite an achievement, considering the anime is only three episodes long! But it was so bold, fresh, and unique, and pushed so many limits, that it really stood out and people talked about it. Thus, people still remember it today, where it regularly comes up in conversation and is a comparison for other newer anime. Arguably, Boku no Pico paved the way for other anime of its type becoming as popular as they have become now, which really changed the yaoi and boys love world forever. Boku no Pico was released in 2006 and became quite famous around that time. But did you know that there are other similar anime to it that pre-date it? In our list of 6 Anime like Boku no Pico, we will highlight other anime and hentai that both have come out since Boku no Pico, and also are a bit older that you might have missed! If you’ve been looking for a new shotacon story to satiate you after Boku no Pico’s short story, look no further – you have found the right article.

Similar Anime to Boku no Pico

1. Okane ga Nai (No Money!) (2007)

Okane ga Nai dvd
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="B00D11U9XI" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 4 " aired=" Feb. 2007 – Dec. 2007 "]

When Yukiya Anase was in high school, he helped out a stranger. Now four years later, while in university, Yukiya finds himself bought by that same stranger at an auction his cousins sells him at…. for 120 million yen. The stranger turns out to be Somuku Kanou, and Okane ga Nai tells the story of their unlikely relationship. Because Yukiya cannot pay Somuku back the 120 million yen he was purchased with, he is forced to have sex with Somuku in return for 500,000 yen each time to try to buy back his eventual freedom. The first and most obvious similarity between Okane ga Nai and Boku no Pico is the age difference between the two main characters. While it is not as wide of a gap as in Boku no Pico, Yukiya is clearly still much younger than Somuku. He thus still finds himself at the mercy of an older and much more experienced lover, just like Pico is. The sex is also less than consensual in both anime, with Yukiya clearly doing it for the money to try to pay Somuku back for buying him. Finally, in both anime the uke, or submissive partner, is drawn in a very feminine and soft style, whereas the seme, or dominant partner, is much more masculine.

2. Shounen Maid Kuuro-kun: Tenshi no Uta (2010)

Shounen Maid Kuuro-kun Tenshi no Uta dvd
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="B003XJCBV6" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 1 " aired=" Sep. 2010 "]

Shounen Maid Kuuro-kun: Tenshi no Uta is about Kuuro, a boy sold into slavery by his own father to pay back his family’s debts. Kuuro finds himself as not just any ordinary slave, but a slave forced into the role of being a boy maid. Of course, Kuuro ends up doing much more than cleaning – his role of being a “maid” is mostly just him wearing a female uniform. The rest of his duties revolve around the sexual gratifications of his new master, and doing whatever he wishes. Like Okane ga Nai, and of course like Boku no Pico, Shounen Maid Kuuro-Kun is a shotacon yaoi. Kuuro is just a boy, and much younger than his master in the story. He is also placed into the submissive position of uke, much like Pico is, though Kuuro finds himself in even more compromising, borderline-BDSM situations. Pico is depicted as a more feminine and soft character, and Kuuro is drawn in the same way. His effeminate role is highlighted even more by his character always being in the cross-dressing situation of wearing a maid uniform. Shounen Maid Kuuro-kun may only be one episode, but if you like a very clear and defined seme/uke kind of hentai, this is definitely one you’ll want to check out!

3. Loveless (2005)

Loveless dvd
[sourceLink asin="B0009J2Q5E" asin_jp="" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" Apr. 2005 – Jun. 2005 "]

Loveless starts off with Ritsuka Aoyagi losing his older brother, and being left alone with only his insane mother – and now, Soubi Agatsuma, a man who claims to have been his brother’s best friend. As the plot unfolds, Ritsuka discovers that Soubi and his brother had a relationship as “Fighter” and “Sacrifice” for an organization called Septimal Moon, which is responsible for his brother’s death. But now, Ritsuka has to be the Sacrifice in his brother’s place, as he and Soubi try to solve the mystery of his brother’s murder. If there is another boys love story that most anime fans have heard of (besides Boku no Pico of course!), it’s Loveless. With 12 episodes and a fully formed, intriguing plot, Loveless has a devoted following despite its age. The eight year age difference between Ritsuka and Soubi is similar to the one between Pico and Tamotsu, and their relationship with Soubi being in a caretaker position to Ritsuka is also very close to Pico and Tamotsu’s. While Loveless is not a hentai, but rather a softer shounen ai, it may not have the sex you’re be looking like in Boku no Pico – but if it’s the relationship between the characters, and the story of an unlikely romance developing, that you like, then Loveless is exactly what you need.

4. Enzai (2004)

Enzai dvd
[sourceLink asin="B0001HDKCC" asin_jp="" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 2 " aired=" Apr. 2004 – Oct. 2004 "]

In Enzai, the main character is a young boy named Guys, who finds himself in quite a bad situation in 19th century France. Originally arrested for the small crime of stealing candy, he finds himself accused and imprisoned for the murder of a man he doesn’t even know! Thus, Guys finds himself in a dirty, dark prison where he is forced to endure many punishments – most of which are forced sexual acts and rape by the men there. Enzai is certainly much darker than the fluffy story of Boku no Pico, and the setting is very different. Many of the themes, however, remain the same – the characters in the sexual situations are males with a large age gap between them, and the younger one is forced into the submissive role. The detective who arrests and convicts Guys is a man named Guildias, and he regularly fills the role that Tamotsu filled of being the dominant person in the relationship. If you liked the idea behind Boku no Pico, but found the story too light-hearted for your interests, then check out Enzai instead! While the background of the characters is the same, the delivery is much more intense and dark if you’re looking for something more extreme.

5. Papa to Kiss in the Dark (2005)

Papa to Kiss in the Dark dvd
[sourceLink asin="B000N8UW1G" asin_jp="" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 2 " aired=" Nov. 2005 – Dec. 2005 "]

Papa to Kiss in the Dark is the most “taboo” of all the anime on our list of 6 Anime like Boku no Pico. The main character, Mira Munakata, is a first year high school student who is in love with his own father, Kyousuke. The two have not only a romantic, but also a sexual relationship with one another. On top of their relationship, Mira’s best friend, as well as the son of the woman Kyousuke is rumoured to marry, have fallen in love and are pursuing Mira! Thus, Mira finds himself surrounded on all sides by various love interests and sexual situations, and the drama of dealing with his father’s potential marriage and the discovery that Mira himself might actually be adopted. Like all the anime on our list so far, Papa to Kiss in the Dark is a shotacon yaoi, so you can continue to expect a young boy with an older and more experienced male in sexual and romantic situations – just like Boku no Pico. Unlike several of our other entries, though, Papa to Kiss in the Dark features a more romantic, happier, and consensual relationship between the main characters, which is closer to the relationship that Pico and Tamotsu have. Despite their age difference – and in the case of Mira and Kyousuke’s bloodline – they learn to love one another, similar to the relationship that develops in Boku no Pico. It’s also a comedy, too, so you can expect some laughs along the way! If that lighter romance is what really captured you watching Boku no Pico, and you’re looking for something else a bit happier and funny, try Papa to Kiss in the Dark!

6. Sensitive Pornography (2004)

SENSITIVE PORNOGRAPH dvd
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="B000A2XA4G" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 1 " aired=" Dec. 2004 "]

Finally, we bring you Sensitive Pornography. In this OVA, there are actually two stories, but we are going to focus on the first one because it is the closest to Boku no Pico. It tells the story of two mangaka, Seiji Yamada and Sono Hanasaki, and their romance together. But what makes it different from the average romance is that there is a ten year age difference between Seiji and Sono! Sono, a hentai writer, was Seiji’s favourite manga artist, and Seiji mistakenly confused Sono for being female. However, even after he learns that Sono is another boy, he can’t help falling in love with him all the same. Sensitive Pornography is the final shotacon yaoi on our list of 6 Anime like Boku no Pico, and again, one of the main similarities is the extreme age difference between the main characters. Also like Boku no Pico, and like Papa to Kiss in the Dark as well, Sensitive Pornography treats the relationship in a more romantic and light-hearted way. This hentai is another comedy, so you can expect to at least smile, if not laugh, as Sono and Seiji’s relationship develops. If you liked the tone of Boku no Pico, then you will enjoy what Sensitive Pornography has to offer you as well.

Ask any fan of Boku no Pico and they will all tell you the same thing – it’s far too short! Why did we only get three episodes and a manga chapter about Pico and Tamotsu’s taboo relationship? Well, here at Honey’s Anime, we hope that checking out some other yaoi and boys love anime from our list will help to ease the wound and satisfy your desire for more shotacon and other similar sexy stories! Though most of these anime are short as well, we hope that you can enjoy them nearly as much as you enjoyed Boku no Pico, and you can have some more fun with the forbidden. [sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Item Image" url="" ]

We are pleased to welcome you back to our monthly Anime Astrology series. This month we’re going to be exploring the third sign of the zodiac and the characters born under it, Gemini. This sign is most commonly associated with duality - two opposite forces coexisting within the same being. This may manifest itself in indecision and inner conflict in Geminis but can also create a breeding ground for the coincidence of unlikely talents and viewpoints. Geminis can be inconsistent, and have difficulty committing to thoughts and ideas, much to the frustration of those around them. However, to their advantage, this same tendency allows them to be extremely flexible, and they are rarely thrown off by changes of plans. This air sign is very often a social butterfly, and their transient approach to life means the are unlikely to take things too seriously which can make them the life of the party. Now let’s take a look at anime characters born under this sign!

[ad_top2 class="mt40 mb40"]

10. Ikki (Amnesia)

[2_images_in_row character='Ikki Amnesia' anime='Amnesia dvd']
[sourceLink asin="B00IOFDJNS" asin_jp="" text="" url="" ]
  • Birthday: June 1st

Ikki is one of the main characters in Amnesia whose life is affected by the female protagonist. He is close friends with one of the other male main characters, Kent. He is a high school student who has quite a way with the ladies - at the same time, he privately resents the attention he receives from the opposite sex. Ikki is a perfect example of the opposing natures that can be found in a Gemini. The first impression he leaves is of a flirtatious womanizer - however, this is a facet of his personality that evolved out of childhood insecurities. He appears to get along with women easily, but at the same time forming meaningful relationships is difficult for him. While he may seem shallow on the surface, he is actually extremely emotionally complex and harbors deep empathy for others.

9. Un (Show By Rock!!)

[2_images_in_row character='Un Show By Rock!!' anime='SHOW BY ROCK dvd']
[sourceLink asin="B00V7YN5C8" asin_jp="" text="" url="" ]
  • Birthday: June 6th

Un plays bass in her band, Tsurezurenaru Ayatsuri Mugenan. The music they play is a bit unusual - it pulls from both Japanese traditional music, as well as modern rock. They’ve traveled to Midi City in order to share their unique brand of music. Un is a compassionate, cheerful girl who has deep respect for music, and the instruments used to play them. The fact that Un plays in a band that fuses two very different musical genres is a very Gemini-like thing for her to be doing. A Gemini may enjoy two very different things simultaneously. This is one of their great strengths - often their diverse tastes lead to very innovative creative pursuits.

8. Coud Van Giruet (Elemental Gelade)

[2_images_in_row character='Coud Van Giruet Erementar Gerad' anime='Erementar Gerad dvd']
[sourceLink asin="B00K05WL8O" asin_jp="" text="" url="" ]
  • Birthday: May 23rd

Despite being only 15, Coud is a proud member of group of sky pirates who call themselves Red Lynx. Despite having been basically raised on a pirate ship, he has a heart of gold and is extremely loyal to the other members of Red Lynx. Because he has no parents of his own, he looks up to the boss of ship like a surrogate father. Coud is a bit of an unusual pirate. Though one typically associates pirates with ruthlessness and trickery, Coud has a deep sense of honor and loyalty. Geminis excel in this respect - because of their natural duality they can foster traits and talents in extremely unlikely environments. This makes the especially talented at overcoming adversity.

7. Andy Domyoji (K)

[2_images_in_row character='Andy Domyouji K' anime='K dvd']
[sourceLink asin="B00GRZPQV0" asin_jp="" text="" url="" ]
  • Birthday: June 4th

Andy Domyoji works for a Tokyo police group known as Scepter 4, or the Blue Clan. They are responsibly for the specific task of monitoring members of the population with supernatural powers. They are largely shrouded in mystery as far as the public is concerned. Andy takes his position within the Blue Clan very seriously. Andy has a fiery temper, and relies on the calming presence of his teammates to keep a cool head. White he can be immature and impulsive in his personal life, when it comes to his work he able to keep his cool and maintain a sense of professionalism. Geminis can be confusing to others in this way. At times, it may seem that they are two different people, when in fact this is just the manifestation of two very different parts of their personalities.

6. Kaname Asahina (Brothers Conflict)

[2_images_in_row character='Kaname Asahina Brothers Conflict' anime='Brothers Conflict DVD']
[sourceLink asin="B01995ZFYM" asin_jp="" text="" url="" ]
  • Birthday: May 28th

Kaname Asahina is a monk, although he certainly doesn’t behave like one. He is able to win women over with his charm and good looks with relative ease. Despite his tendency towards shameless flirting with any woman who crosses his path, he is a very complex character. He takes it upon himself to protect the wellbeing of his friends and family, and is extremely harsh with himself when he feels he has been unable to do so. Gemini’s are very socially oriented, navigation multiple friendships and relationships with relative ease, and Kaname is no exception. He is extremely socially gifted, used to being able to use his charisma to win others over. In addition to this, the duality aspect of Gemini is also present within him - while he easily and comfortably assumes the role of a playboy, he also genuinely desires love and compassion from women.

5. Shion Karanomori (Psycho-Pass)

[2_images_in_row character='Shion Karanomori' anime='Psycho-Pass dvd']

Despite her talent, having passed her exams ahead of schedule, she tends toward laziness at work. She is quite fond cosmetics and fashion, and takes great care of her appearance. Shion Karamori is a Gemini who successfully finds a way to manage her duality. Glamor and scientific work aren’t two things that are commonly associated with eachother, and yet they are both important parts of Shion’s life. In addition to this, she isn’t particularly fond of others pressing her to work hard, but she has nonetheless found a way to excel in her profession.

Renshou Sorinozuka is a demon who is very close friends with the protagonist of the series, Ririchyo. The two are so close that he considers himself to be an “older brother” to her. He has an extremely relaxed disposition and generally takes his time when he approaches tasks, leading to others accusing him of being unmotivated. Even if he may take the slow and steady approach to life, he is a reliable friend to those who rely on him. Those born under the Gemini star sign will often take their dear sweet time when it comes to tasks at hand. Sometimes this may indeed be a lack of motivation, but more often than not like Renshou it is just because they rarely take anything too seriously, which can be a good thing. While other star signs may sweat the small stuff, a well adjusted Gemini certainly doesn’t have to.

3. Sayuri Hanayori (Owari no Seraph)

[2_images_in_row character='Sayuri Hanayori Owari no Seraph' anime='owari no seraph 2 DVD']
[sourceLink asin="B0169TFS1Q" asin_jp="" text="" url="" ]
  • Birthday: May 23rd

Sayuri Hanori is a strong military woman serving in the Japanese Imperial Demon Army - she has worked her way up to second lieutenant and in addition to this, teaches as a military instructor. She has a bright personality and is a very high-energy person. Despite her competence as a soldier and prestigious position, she is surprisingly clumsy. Because Geminis are so laid-back they may give off the appearance of being lazy or unenthusiastic to those on the outside. However, this is rarely true - Geminis like Sayuri don’t feel the need to boast about their achievements to others. This means that many people born under this star sign have talents or passions that they keep easily hidden, until the time comes for them to use them in the public eye.

2. Shinji Ikari (Neon Genesis Evangelion)

[2_images_in_row character='shinji ikari' anime='evangelion DVD']
[sourceLink asin="B000244FRS" asin_jp="" text="" url="" ]
  • Birthday: June 6th

Shinji Ikari is the pilot of Evangelion Unit-01, and the son of a prestigious scientist and engineer. He is charged with the responsibility of helping to combat the Angels, a force that threatens humanity itself. He is relatively young and inexperienced, and because of this is initially poorly equipped to handle many of the challenges that come into his life as a result of the difficult position he has found himself in. Shinji is faced with personal conflict and internal struggles throughout the duration of the series. This sort of difficulty is very common to those born under the Gemini star sign. However, if Geminis like Shinji are able to overcome the opposing forces within themselves they can use the various ideas and values that flow through them to their advantage, and are capable of greater adaptability than the average person.

[sourceLink asin="B007NU53E8" asin_jp="" text="" url="" ]
  • Birthday: June 9th

Hikaru and Kaoru Hitachiin are both hosts that work at the Ouran High School Host Club. The two twins use their charm and the appealing taboo of “brotherly love” to woo female customers. While the two brothers are very alike in many ways, they are very different in others - which often leads to conflict between the two, Either they are totally in sync, or at odds with one another - rarely is there an in between. It is a bit cliche that the star sign of these two twins would be Gemini. After all, twins are a symbol very often associated with this sign. However, when their individual characteristics are examined, it couldn’t make more sense. They both have sides of themselves that they display to clientele at the club - their public personas are very much unified, in sync with one another. This unity is definitely a true facet of their personalities. At the same time, each of them harbors a side that is completely different from the other.

Final Thoughts

Gemini is a star sign that exemplifies duality in some aspect of their life - be it in their personality, or personal interests. This inclination can either serve to generate tremendous conflict and turmoil in their lives, or be the key to their success. It is important to remember that no two characters born under the same stars are exactly alike, but looking at anime characters through the lens of astrology is interesting to say the least! We hope you’ll join us for our next installment of Anime Astrology!

Do you feel annoyed by the content of recent anime shows? Do you feel like anime plots were just “better back then”? Can’t deal with the moe biz or sticking to Seinen because you feel it has “more content in the story” compared to other genres? I’m sorry to break it to you pal, but you’re a hipster otaku. Now, ‘hipster anime’ is not exactly a genre, so we went with anime suitable for those into the hipster trend. Now the definition of a hipster may vary, but there’s always some points in common which are: lifestyle, fashion, music, intellect and vintage. For this list, we've chosen ten anime that fit comfortably into these characteristics.

10. Chikyuu Shoujo Arjuna (Arjuna)

Earth Girl Arjuna dvd
[sourceLink asin="B00006G8FH" asin_jp="" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 13 " aired=" January 2001 - March 2001 "]

Starting right off the bat with a series I personally didn't know existed before it being recommended to me. The hipster world is all about being underground and watching stuff before it becomes cool... here’s an old one for your hipster list: Arjuna. So this chick, Juna, dies. Yeah, she dies in the first episode only to become the avatar of time who will save the planet Earth from its imminent death. An anime with a message to create consciousness about saving our nature, HELL YEAH! Now that's what I call core hipster, right there. This anime is kind of a mix between that old cartoon Captain Planet, Blue Seed and Tenchi Muyo’s main plot (just so you get an idea with more recognized titles...I think?). If you’re trying to help nature and create consciousness about our planet’s well-being, this is the series you’d want to watch and share as many times as possible.

9. Kekkai Sensen (Blood Blockade Battlefront)

Kekkai Sensen dvd
[sourceLink asin="B00V7YDWSK" asin_jp="" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" April 2015 - October 2015 "]

Oh yeah, from the type of hipster that likes to make a big deal out of trivial things like: “this corn chip not being GMO free” , “that latte is not made with soy milk farmed by a vegan” or “I read the book before the movie was created”; comes this otaku hipster “I was into Rie Matsumoto’s stories before Kekkai Sensen”, right? If you’re into Precure that is. If you’re pretending to be hipster (otaku) just to be, well… hip, this series is something you’d want to show off. The director (obviating the part that she looks like a hipster herself) tried changing her sparkly magical girls for... Smokey magical guys in New York. The story is not complex, it's just out of order and kind of leaves you (very) confused at times. Mixing characters with super powers and personality, the director pulls off a series that can only be divided in two forms: hate it or love it; much like the hipster trend. With no happy mediums, this series gives you the excellent opportunity to confuse your friends with the plot and pretend that you totally understand it and dig it (after you’ve cracked the order of the series on your 4th time watching it). When you’re done overreacting and actually watch the series accepting beforehand that you’ll be totally confused, the story becomes enjoyable and easy to watch.

8. Kuuchuu Buranko (Welcome to Irabu’s Office)

Welcome to Irabu’s Office dvd
[sourceLink asin="B00XNVM3G2" asin_jp="" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 11 " aired=" October 2009 - December 2009 "]

In this anime, there is a bizarre hospital for patients who are just as strange and when they visit the psychiatric ward of Irabu's General Hospital, they end up not only cured by the weird treatments of Dr. Ichirou Irabu, but also acquiring peace of mind. A comedy without saturated fanservice? A seinen without blood? An animation that makes you feel like you’re insane yourself? All checked! This anime certainly goes against the mainstream theme of anime. The story is about the psychological observation of patients during a period of 10 days. Everything from OCD to Freud's study of the human psyche, you'll find all sorts of topics that explore the human mind. Although the theme of mental illness may seem crude, it blends in art and comedy to create something surreal. We classify this as hipster anime because it's incredibly unknown. The theme of the anime is a rare find and the different artstyle itself is eye candy for hipsters into pop art. Hurry and watch it before every else joins the bandwagon!

7. Nana

nana dvd
[sourceLink asin="B0036BDQ38" asin_jp="" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 47 " aired=" April 2006 - March 2007 "]

Say guys, do you remember the first time you met Nana? Nana Komatsu - in her 20s - is looking to start a new life as an adult, part of this involves running after her love to Tokyo. At the same time, Nana Osaki - punk rock singer - pursues the contrary of Komatsu, and is running away from her love, as well as, her band. The two birds of a feather meet and form an unbreakable bond in trying to figure out life together. The realistic characters and not so perfect romances are the strong points of this series; something strongly related to the hipster world. Many hipsters - especially girls - are known to be hopeless romantics, often writing down their emotional experiences in poems or those “inspirational” pictures with messages we are so accustomed to see in social medias. Nana gives us just that dash of melancholic romance and poetry in its own way, showing us that love is not like a fairy tale. In addition to this, the series has a great OST performed by Nana’s band and a few others from the series.

6. The Dragon Dentist from Nihon Animator Mihonichi (Japan Anima(tor)'s Exhibition)

The Dragon Dentist from Nihon Animator Mihonichi dvd
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Official Website" url="http://animatorexpo.com/thedragondentist/" ]
[Information episodes=" Short " aired=" November 2014 "]

The hipster world is a strange place where the more unknown the reference is, the more hip it becomes. That's why i'm bringing you not a series or an OVA, but a SHORT. Nothing is more hipster than an animation short, since you can only get them in expositions or events. This animation is produced by Dwango, under the name Nihon Animator Mihonichi, which is a series of small shorts that were overlooked by many otakus before the instant hit of the clip titled Me! Me! Me!. The 35 shorts are named Japan Anima(tor)'s Exhibition as a whole, but in fact are singles that have nothing to do with each other (well, maybe one or two of them do). I have chosen The Dragon Dentist as my hipster shining star because of its good quality animation and plot. There's not much I can tell you without spoiling the story; it was the first of the shorts and it is roughly 7 minutes. This short features a girl, the youngest among the seven rookies. They are headed into some sort of war between humans and dragons and unfortunately, the characters are sent to aid the dragons. In such a short time, the animation delivers an extraordinary plot that will leave you thinking for days. This is a beautiful piece of art suitable of the hipster mindscape.

5. Serial Experiments Lain

Serial Experiments Lain dvd
[sourceLink asin="B00012QLR8" asin_jp="" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 13 " aired=" July 1998 - September 1998 "]

“And you don't seem to understand”… Is how the opening song greets you into Serial Experiments Lain, and you're certainly correct BoA1, we don't understand. Lain is one of the most hipster anime I can think of, the series is hipster gold. The story is a complicated analysis of the human mind and existence, and a girl named Lain is there to guide us into this madness. The Wired is the equivalent of the anime’s version of the internet but it’s a much more abstract web to what we’re used to. Lain was not interested in the Wired at all, until the day she receives a strange email from a classmate who committed suicide a few days before the message. The strange part of this deal is that Lain, out of curiosity, continues to communicate with Chisa - the deceased girl - over a series of emails via the Wired. In these messages, Chisa constantly invites Lain to come inside the Wired, not fully understanding it herself, but into a deeper Wire, a place where one can exist being disembodied and experience the very presence of God. As Lain digs deeper into the Wire, she loses her way in finding herself - if that even makes sense? Anywho, If you’re that kind of oblivious hipster who only watches anime with “strong meanings”, Lain will definitely be a handful. 1. BoA is the singer that performs Serial Experiments Lain’s Opening Song.

4.Beck

Beck- Mongolian Chop Squad
[sourceLink asin="B007NU546U" asin_jp="" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 26 " aired=" October 2004 - March 2005 "]

I mean, just listen to the music from this band, it instantly throws you back 35 years. Soon you‘ll be dusting off cassettes and watching anime in VCRs. Hipsters are strongly into the music world and it's one of the most distinctive characteristic of the hipster lifestyle. Beck is a series about a music band called BECK: Mongolian Chop Squad. Our protagonist Yukio Tanaka felt that life was meaningless, until he discovers his passion for music after joining Ryuusuke's band. This anime is a realistic vision of life as a band struggling in the world of fame. Beck also has pretty neat jams featuring classic rock, blues, rap and hard rock for any type of your hipster music fixes.

3. Redline

RedLine
[sourceLink asin="B005WMADYE" asin_jp="" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" Movie " aired=" August 2009 "]

Redline makes it to the list thanks to the incredible stunt of the animators. In the midst of the digital revolution in the world of animation, the animators of Redline decided to show us the real potential of traditional hand animation. In a stunning 7 years production, the movie Redline ended up being… other-worldly. They took one of the most rare anime genre: racing, mixed it with epic vehicles, incredible characters and a majestic soundtrack to give birth to a legendary anime that sadly goes underestimated in the otaku world. Step into the adrenaline-filled world of our protagonist, JP, and experience the maximum potential of the world of racing. This is a race across the galaxy, where only the best survive. Humans and aliens alike, race against each other for money and fame, the competitions have only a few rules to abide by, and equipping weapons to your vehicles to get rid of your competitors is not in the restrictions. Redline is the ultimate race, and it has absolutely no rules, only entering means putting your life on the line. To make things even more interesting, Redline will take place in a planet who is ruled solely by a warmonger. Ignoring this ruler and his warnings to kill anyone in sight, the racers enter the planet and compete. Who will make it out alive and victorious?

2. Dimension W

Dimension W dvd
[sourceLink asin="B019MMA0RE" asin_jp="" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" January 2016 - March 2016 "]

Dimension W is a recent anime from winter 2016, but being new doesn't stop it from being hipster. Mainly, I want to highlight the main character Mabuchi Kyouma, for keeping his hipster chill in a futuristic world. Dimension W is a series where the world has discovered unlimited energy derived from another dimension designated as ‘dimension w’. This energy is stored in devices called Coils, all of which are owned by the Tesla Energy Company. As expected, many people seek illegal usage of this power, resulting in the creation of unofficial coils. Bounty hunters set out to retrieve these illegal coils for money, most of them use coils to help them fight, but Kyouma says: Nope. Kyouma refuses to use coils by all means and believes life can be complete without this technology. Even his clothes are old fashioned, as his attire resembles that of a traditional Japanese male Kabushiki and some old fashioned jika-tabi style sandals (ninja shoes!). He takes down enemies using coil-free weapons that look like darts/knives, and he attacks as if he has Three Dimensional Maneuver Gears from Attack on Titan. In the end, he never collects the money but instead is paid with gasoline to fuel his beloved retro cars. This anime revolves around Kyouma and his life so it's safe to say this series will shine in your hipster radar.

1. Paradise Kiss

Paradise Kiss DVD
[sourceLink asin="B000JJSJ1O" asin_jp="" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" October 2005 - December 2005 "]

The first thing that stands out in hipsters is their fashion. They mix vintage or retro attire with modern fashion and it oddly goes better than you expect. Hipsters pay attention to the way they dress, making sure that what they wear is not from your mainstream shops. Thats one of the main reasons why Paradise Kiss is our top pick. This anime isn't flagged under the hipster radar and I can understand why, at plain sight it doesn't look hipster, but once you see it you won't be able to differ. The story is about Yukari, a girl that starts to discover her path in life and embraces the world of fashion, luxury and lust. She becomes a model for Paradise Kiss, a group of people with their own clothing brand. All the characters constantly clash with each other because they have different styles and personalities that can brush off as arrogant or with a sense of superiority. They hang out and showcase most of their work in a bar that seems to be visited only by them. We got attitude, fashion, drama and vintage, all while enjoying smooth jazz in the background. This series is Paradise Hipster.

Final Thoughts

To be quite honest, this list was more than I could chew. Even if the term Hipster is common in the west and it has spread like wildfire around the world in this last decade, it apparently hasn't reached Japan quite yet or at least in the Japanese animation industry. For the Japanese, it’s very hard to grasp the definition of hipster, since all the hipsters in Japan are doing damn good in keeping themselves hidden from the mainstream. There is literally no such thing as a hipster anime yet but, as this list proves, there IS some hipster essence in some series, specially in older anime. I’m willing to bet you can't find more hipster anime than these mentioned in the list, but you’re welcome to prove me wrong in the comments. Can there be a more hipster anime than these 10? Tell us below!
