Shinchou Yuusha: Kono Yuusha ga OreTUEEE Kuse ni Shinchou Sugiru (Cautious Hero: The Hero Is Overpowered but Overly Cautious) Introduction and Story (No Spoilers)

Shinchou Yuusha, commonly known as Cautious Hero is a Fall 2019 isekai anime. The 2010's is when isekai rose to prominence in the anime medium and rapidly became its own genre. Cautious Hero managed to find a brilliant niche within this heavily saturated field, following in the footsteps of popular isekai titles like KonoSuba, which prioritized comedy. Cautious Hero follows the adventures of Ryuuguuin Seiya, a young man summoned by the goddess Ristarte to save the world of Gaeabrande, a world on the brink of ruin. Seeing his abnormally high stats, Ristarte believed Seiya to be the perfect candidate to embark on this journey. She, however, never accounted for Seiya’s… eccentricity. Seiya is a man who never throws caution to the wind. He is cautious to a fault; in fact, he’s almost too cautious! Despite his high stats, Seiya spends most of his time training his body and he fights every enemy, be they weak or strong, with all his might. From the first episode, Seiya is shown to be the ideal hero. Yet, he doesn’t trust anyone and is incredibly stubborn. Rather than head straight to the action, Seiya spends his time training to be at peak fitness. After this, we are shown Seiya’s caution as he heads to the merchants of Gaeabrande to buy the gear he’ll need for his missions. The ever-cautious Seiya bought three sets of the same armor – one to wear, one as a spare and one as a spare for the spare! Seiya’s caution overcomes every other personality trait he has; it is the most important thing for him. The result of this trait he doesn’t care that he appears unsociable, distrusting and even dismissive to his companions and strangers alike. Seiya fights low-level monsters like slimes with highly destructive techniques, going as far as to chain high-level attacks even after he has disintegrated his enemy. Cautious Hero follows a format that relies on gags including Seiya’s caution and nonchalance, Ristarte’s status as a goddess but her ineptitude in moments of peril, Seiya’s calm and effective means of dealing with enemies weak and strong; as well as Seiya’s catchphrase “Ready, perfect. I am fully prepared”. Very soon into his journey, Seiya’s strength is tested as a level 66 demon named Chaos Machina appears intending to kill Seiya before he poses a threat. It is revealed that Seiya had been hiding his level the entire time, out of caution. These are elements that persist throughout the anime even as he meets the Dragonkin twins, Mash and Elulu, who become his two other companions on his journey. The twins bring forth an important aspect of the lore of the world of Gaeabrande, which features the prophecy of the sacred sword known as Igzasion. Goddesses in Cautious Hero are tasked with summoning heroes from other worlds to embark on adventures with them in worlds that are suffering from the tyrannical rule of a demon lord of some kind. Seiya finds himself pummeling most of his opponents with ease, stumping even the strongest gods and goddesses. Seiya’s intense commitment to preparation makes him a menace even to the gods and goddesses he’d asked to train him. For about ten of the twelve-episode run, Cautious Hero runs very far with its comedy, focusing mostly on the aforementioned gags, which go on to include Ristarte’s strange obsession with Seiya. This begins as more of the comedy which is the meat and bones of the anime but soon gains a very somber tinge in the latter stages. After a day of fun, Ristarte, Mash, and Elulu hurriedly return to Seiya’s hotel room to find him missing. Ishtar summons the party and tells them the truth about Seiya’s whereabouts, before explaining the truth behind Seiya’s caution.

Why You Should Watch Shinchou Yuusha: Kono Yuusha ga OreTUEEE Kuse ni Shinchou Sugiru (Cautious Hero: The Hero Is Overpowered but Overly Cautious)

1.Absolutely Hilarious

Fans of comedy, anime have themselves quite the treat when it comes to Cautious Hero because the show is quite ridiculous (in a good way). In the past 5 or so years, there have been several isekai anime choosing to go the funny route and of those titles, Cautious Hero has a very basic yet highly enjoyable formula when it comes to its hilarity. The gag of Seiya’s incredible commitment to caution is also greatly supported by his deadpan processing of everything around him – Cautious Hero is an isekai that tells you not to think too much about anything, Seiya will do that on his own. This featuring of an overpowered protagonist is also what propelled popular shows like One Punch Man.

2.Action, Action, Action

Despite Seiya’s incredible power and the swiftness with which he deals with each problem as it comes by, you’re never bored by what is happening on screen with Cautious Hero. The dangerous quests and Seiya’s caution when doing those quests means that the fights are quite entertaining regardless of their brevity; however, towards the end, there is also the inclusion of some powerful adversaries who raise the stakes to the point where Seiya is forced to use some incredible and dangerous ultimate techniques!

3.Art and Animation

Bright and beautiful, Cautious Hero sells itself well in the visual department, particularly during combat; however, also with how it displays various fantasy elements and characters. The world of Gaeabrande is vibrant but a far cry from the world inhabited by the gods and goddesses; which proves to be one of the most beautiful fixtures the show has. In the final episodes featuring some pivotal fights, there are some flashy light shows in combat that are pleasing to the eye and give a little bit of insight into just how powerful some characters are. There are also some minor effects, such as Ristarte’s reactions to certain situations, which just add to the comedic aspect of the show and make it that much more enjoyable.

Why You Should Skip Shinchou Yuusha: Kono Yuusha ga OreTUEEE Kuse ni Shinchou Sugiru (Cautious Hero: The Hero Is Overpowered but Overly Cautious)

1.Haven’t We Seen This Before?

Despite the unique edge Cautious Hero gives itself when it comes to the personality of its protagonist, it still feels rather familiar. In fact, there is a running joke in some circles about Ristarte being a blonde Aqua (KonoSuba) and that sentiment brings a major issue: you can’t quite shake the feeling that Cautious Hero is similar in some ways to some other comedy isekai; KonoSuba in particular.

2.No Character Growth

If you’re trying to watch a show where the characters experience trials and triumphs throughout an incredible journey and grow as a result, Cautious Hero is simply not the one. The characters’ stock personalities are the basis of much of its humor and since the humor is the meat and bones of Cautious Hero as a series, growth isn’t a priority. There are some cases of change brought on by Seiya’s presence in the series; however, these too are for the sake of the comedy.

Final Thoughts

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="ZMXZ-13621" text="" url="" ]

Cautious Hero does what it does really well and can be considered one of the comedy gems of 2019. In a rapidly saturated isekai subgenre, Cautious Hero seems like it could be a once-off title that will find itself in the recommendations of many isekai fans. If it does continue past its endpoint, it’ll have leagues of happy fans waiting for it!

Horror is a very popular genre because everyone knows what fear feels like. That cold feeling in the pit of your stomach when you are not sure of your surroundings or when you are alone and hear a strange noise in the dark has been felt by most of us, and it’s fun to feel it when you are in the safety of your home or the movie theater with your friends. However, it’s not as easy to create, as making different people feel the same fear can be challenging, and it’s very common to believe that gore or shocking scenes are enough to create true horror. Horror anime is also very popular because Japanese horror can be very different from the kind of stories we're used to in the West. From their original myths to urban legends, to amazing new stories, horror anime brings us new scary images and reasons to fear even the most common things and 2019 was not the exception, giving us great series that we will count down in this list.

    5. Yami Shibai 7 (Yamishibai: Japanese Ghost Stories 7)

    [en][information_general item1 = "Episodes" content1="13" item2="Aired" content2="July 2019 – September 2019" post_id=""][/en]

Deep in the forest, or down by the park, if you are playing outside when the day is over and night begins, you may find an old man who still carries an old kamishibai, a paper theater that was widely used in Japan by storytellers before manga, radio, and finally, TV took all their listeners. This old man has no name and seems to be quite friendly but the stories he tells will create nightmares. His tales are based on frightening Japanese urban legends, and he will narrate them to any audience he gets, even if it's only you, the viewer. As in previous seasons, Yami Shibai consists of 13 short horror stories, each done with a slightly different animation style, based on different Japanese myths but updated for the modern era. It’s hard for an anthology series to maintain quality for many seasons, but Yami Shibai has managed it for seven years, giving us a nice, scary taste of what kind of urban legends exist in Japan and how that affects their culture. Definitely a must-watch for horror and Japan fans.

    4. Boogiepop wa Warawanai (Boogiepop and Others)

If you study at Shinyo Academy, you have probably heard about Boogiepop, the mysterious shinigami who seeks out beautiful girls and kills them before their beauty begins to fade with age. It comes at night and is rumored to be behind many disappearances that have been written off by the authorities as runaways. But the truth behind the legend is far more complicated: Boogiepop is not a demon, but a guardian tasked with destroying the true cause behind the disappearances. A guardian who should be sleeping within a very common schoolgirl named Touka Miyashita. Boogiepop wa warawanai is a new chapter in the Boogiepop franchise, that began as a set of light novels lasting 22 volumes. From the very beginning, Boogiepop is hard to classify since is both a mystery and a horror series, but given its scary atmosphere, the real fears of losing loved ones and not ever knowing what happened to them, and the existential terrors that having a second personality you know nothing about can bring, it is easy to see why it's always listed as horror at the end. And if you enjoy some driving questions and riddles with your fear, this is the 2019 horror series you should not miss.

    3. Koutetsujou no Kanaberi Movie 3: Unato Kessen (Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress: The Unato Battle)

    [en][information_general item1 = "Episodes" content1="1" item2="Aired" content2="May 2019" post_id=""][/en]

Life in the armored Hayajiro, under constant attack of the Kabane, is not easy, but the survivors have managed to keep on going forward despite the attempts of the noblemen at Kongokaku. Ikoma and Mumei still defend the train’s inhabitants as the Kabaneri who share the Kabane curse but remain mostly human. However, as the train reaches Unato, they have to face new dangerous types of Kabane. One in particular can hurt Kabaneri with just one hit and suddenly, the chances of the remaining humans are diminished drastically. Koutetsujou no Kabaneri has a great mix of elements in its favor: Steampunk aesthetic, zombies, the character designs by legendary Haruhiko Mikimoto and some incredible music by Hiroyuki Sawano. While the original tv series stumbled a bit at the ending, this movie, which is a direct sequel to it, manages to pick up the pace quite well and keep up the horror that is to live in a small enclosed space, with the constant threat of disease and monsters coming to destroy you and your loved ones.

    2. Shingeki no Kyojin 3 Part 2 (Attack on Titan Season 3 Part 2)

    [en][information_general item1 = "Episodes" content1="10" item2="Aired" content2="April 2019 – July 2019" post_id=""][/en]
    [es][information_general item1 = "Episodios" content1="___content1___" item2="Emisión" content2="___content2___" post_id=""][/es]

Eren and the Survey Corps have decided that the last remaining humans need to have hope for the future and thus embark on a mission to retake Wall Maria and survive. This means going back to Shinganshina, where most of them spent their childhood and lost their families, but they are ready to do so to fight for the future. However, once the Corps reach Shinganshina, stress starts getting to them as conflicts start among themselves. Levi and Eren are divided and there seems to be no real strategic reason to retake the city besides the hope it could bring. And then, the enemy finally makes their move. Shingeki no Kyojin, or Attack on Titan as it's better known, is still one of the harsher, most gruesome anime that is airing in Japan. As the story advances, we have lost many beloved characters, seen betrayal and devastation, and still, Eren and his friends won’t give up hope that they can reach the ocean and live freely. There are a few moments of calm within each episode, but the horror comes not necessarily from the man-eating Titans—which are quite terrifying on their own—but from the secrets that Eren and company start discovering which show the darker parts of the human soul.

    1. Yakusoku no Neverland (The Promised Neverland)

    [en][information_general item1 = "Episodes" content1="12" item2="Aired" content2="January 2019 – March 2019" post_id=""][/en]

What do you do when you find out your whole life is a lie? That the siblings you have seen being adopted into happy families where in fact murdered by monsters as soon as they were out of your sight, and the doting mother you have known since you can remember only considers you cattle, taking care of you for her own prestige and survival and not because she feels any kindness towards you. Some people would fall into despair, but Emma is not ready to give up. She is not only determined to escape the orphanage that has been her home but also save the lives of every one of her siblings, no matter what it takes. Yakusoku no Neverland took everyone by surprise thanks to the apparently simple plot of a group of orphans trying to escape the place where they’re being raised to be eaten by monsters before they turn thirteen years old. But as the episodes advanced and we saw that there was a huge chess game being played between “Mama” Isabella and Emma where every choice had to be made knowing that the enemy could be three or four steps behind, created an amazingly chilling atmosphere that didn’t need jump scares to be terrifying. Thanks to that, Yakusoku no Neverland was the best horror series of the year and we can’t wait for the second season in 2020.

The hardest part of writing horror is that everyone has different fears. Someone may absolutely hate heights while others think they're cool while freezing upon seeing a spider or a different bug. Because of this, finding the perfect balance to make everyone feel chills up their spine while watching is something we should celebrate and we believe the five series we showcased today fit that bill. Considering that, please let us know what is your favorite horror series of the year and what was the moment that scared you the most! We really want to know in the comments below!

    Discussion Time

No matter what school you attend—whether it’s for heroes or regular people—the point of school is to advance and become better. Well, folks, it seems our young heroes are indeed advancing and it makes our hearts happy. Chapter 256 of Boku no Hero Academia is all about showing off our young warriors as they show All-Might their upgraded abilities and to his amazement, they aren’t small upgrades but big ones! Despite their troubles at their respected hero agencies, our heroes are learning more about their own skills and how to hone their Quirks in new ways! All-Might truly is amazed by Deku, though, as he’s showing powers that are going even beyond his own in many ways. They all still have more maturing to do but the future looks bright! Meanwhile, Erasher Head and his loud “friend” Present Mic are down about the realization that Nomu aren’t just simply created beings as they thought previously. The duo doesn’t have long to ponder their thoughts as Mirio and Tamaki burst in to tell them Eri’s horn seems to be having a strange reaction. What this reaction exactly is we have ideas on but don’t learn much from the sudden announcement. Our chapter ends with Deku, Bakugo, and All-Might in a break room with Deku being given a notebook. From what we can guess, this book might have notes on past users of One For All and if that is the case, Deku is about to get ten times stronger! We didn’t see a lot of villain appearances in this chapter but here are a few reasons why skipping out on chapter 256 would be a mistake!

Why You Should Read Boku no Hero Academia (My Hero Academia) Chapter 256
    [sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="viz" url="https://www.viz.com/read/manga/my-hero-academia-volume-22/product/6124" ]

    1. Growth

Our young wannabe heroes might not be graduates of UA yet but their skills are certainly graduating to new levels! Even our naval Quirk Shining Hero has acquired the ability to make a naval sword…sounds weird but it’s something at least. Bottom line, our heroes are growing and this should make surviving the upcoming battles a bit easier.

    2. Notebook of the Past

The last scene of chapter 256 is easily the biggest one as All-Might hands Deku a book filled with, most likely, past users of One for All! Deku is easily the smartest UA student so having this notebook should help him advance his skills to limits that could surpass All-Might! We can’t wait to see what that book contains in upcoming chapters!

    Final Thoughts

Boku no Hero Academia 256 showed what it means to grow. Our young heroes are all making big strides to better their Quirks and that will ultimately make them stronger Pro Heroes! But two new questions have arisen in this 256th chapter. What is happening to Eri’s horn and what really is contained in that book All-Might gave to Deku? The wait is going to kill us Boku no Hero Academia fans but we must endure! What do you think will happen in the next chapter? Comment below to share some much-beloved theories! The Craftsmanship of Chaos: Babylon’s Thoughtful Pacing

Babylon’s story follows public prosecutor Zen Seizaki. As he uncovers the political crimes behind the Shiniki District elections, Babylon’s pacing becomes chaotic, spiraling viewers into the depths of a corrupt election. To keep viewers intrigued, Kiyotaka Suzuki (Director) and Jin Aketegawa (Sound Director) employ several techniques to misdirect the main character--and by proximity, the viewers. Both Suzuki and Aketegawa understand the importance of pacing. By releasing key information through visuals and sound, they contribute to the perception of the story and its careful pacing. For this article, I’ll show how pacing influences film and sound decisions in Babylon’s early episodes. By comparing episodes 1 and 2, I hope to show how pacing is tied to the show’s tone, character nuance, and revelation of its mystery.

    A Brief Explanation: Pacing’s Importance

Before moving forward, we’ll discuss pacing and its relevance. In the context of writing, pacing is the perceived speed a story unfolds. Since pacing can be influenced by perception, this means that even long passages can seem fast with the right techniques. For example, a passage with a lot of active verbs, few descriptions, and short sentences can have a quick pace. The speed through which an audience can absorb information is easy, therefore the pace by which they go through that passage can be fast. By comparison, a passage with lengthy sentences, many descriptive details, and little action will be read at a different pace. The necessity of absorbing details will slow the pace of the reading as long as details are relevant. One factor that can influence relevance is a beat. In films/plays, a beat is a pause, event, emotional change, or revelation/understanding that changes how a character pursues their goal. Scenes with more beats require an audience to understand what changed a character’s motivation--therefore a scene can feel fast-paced as beats switch how a character pursues their goal. Furthermore, beats can be applied to the story as well. When critical information is revealed, it can change the direction of a story, thus a story beat. For the sake of brevity, we will only be talking about this type of story beat.

    The Craftmanship of Chaos

Babylon’s first episode starts in medias res (in the middle of things), requiring viewers to focus or quickly be lost. Juggling this information while trying to remember character names, established motivations, and setting can quickly snowball. As a mystery, the first episode aptly establishes its premise. By providing more questions than answers, it wants to invoke a viewer’s interest. Why is a pharmaceutical company linked to political elections? Why does an ominous, ineligible letter appear with the seized company assets? Why is Inaba, an anesthesiologist found dead in his apartment? Why is Shiniki, an independent city, brought up as part of the investigation? All these questions end on a cliff-hanger, a final image. Fumio, Zen’s assistant/ an up-and-coming prosecutor, is found dead in his apartment. The hectic events of the pilot episode are magnified further by its pacing. With barely 20 minutes to think, it’s not surprising viewers are left confused. However, this is intentional. Time is needed to understand information and without a moment to breathe (a slower pace), details will escape the viewers--just as they escape the protagonist.

    Information Flow: Pacing Influences Understanding

While episode 1 sets the premise and introduces the plot, episode 2 is deliberately slower, allowing viewers to understand Zen’s character and beliefs. From the onset, the tone is melancholy. The very person whose death ended the last episode returns in memory. "What does being a public prosecutor mean to you, Mr. Seizaki?" Surprised by the sudden question, Zen takes a moment to answer Fumio, "You want to become a public prosecutor...You're serious, right? If you are, then you should work to become the kind of public prosecutor you yourself want to be." At his response, Fumio walks away, but quickly realizes, Zen didn’t answer his question. "So... what was your answer, Mr. Seizaki?" Fumio probes further. "That goes without saying.” Zen raises a coffee mug to his lips. “It means upholding justice…” the scene cuts to the present. Zen lowers his coffee and finishes his line, “and protecting people." Missing from the picture is Fumio. Rain, now audible in the background, punctuates the scene with Zen’s lonely frame. Babylon is a mixture of genres. It’s a thriller, which thrives off of quick pacing. It’s a mystery, which values a contemplative (slow) pacing. It’s psychological, which needs an understanding of motivation. The first episode has shaken our protagonist. The second episode must then have him reexamine his values--find his way through Babylon’s maze. As if alive, the piano finds a newfound resolve. It pauses then leads us into the next scene. For a moment, the rain’s sound gives way to a strong wind. During this, Zen pays his respects at Fumio’s funeral, which is intercut with a discussion with Morinaga, head of the Public Prosecutors. Morinaga explains that Fumio’s death is being ruled a suicide. He then asks Zen if that’s what he thinks, “That’s impossible,” Zen says with his expression covered and his back to Fumio’s funeral photo. The scene now cuts to Zen in the car with Morinaga. Zen explains, “He had no reason to.” When Zen clarifies further, he moves his face away from the camera. Just as before, the camera hides Zen’s expression, “Fumio was… murdered.” With that statement, the traffic lights go red. The pacing moves at the speed of the car, slowly through traffic, stopping when necessary. Episode 1, by comparison, moves at a pace that disregards its characters. Chaos is the goal behind its pacing--and furthermore, the goal behind the mastermind. While episode 1 was meant to shroud intentions, episode 2 requires its character to unveil intentions. Once the opening ends, Zen is interrogating a new character. Immediately noticeable is the smaller screen; black bars border the top and bottom, constraining the space we see. Viewers are forced to look towards the center, and what meets them is a pair of blue, translucent eyes. We are now eye-to-eye with a witness. One who disregards the truth. One who bends and controls the narrative. She calls herself Ms. Emiko Hiramatsu, but Zen interrogates her further--is that her true name? She interrupts his question with a unique statement. She reads his name aloud, “Seizaki (正崎) Zen (善)... Meaning ‘Just’ and ‘Good’.” When Zen reiterates his question, “Ms. Emiko” opens her mouth slowly. The screen cuts to black when she answers yes. It is only later we learn her true name.

    Final Thoughts

Public order rests upon Zen’s shoulders. In order to protect the public, he must seize the truth, live up to his namesake of “Just” and “Good.” The sooner Zen can regain his bearings, the sooner the puzzle comes together. In this show, “Justice” is easily manipulated, shoved into directions at the whims of corrupt laws and politicians. In order to give to place viewers in Zen’s shoes, pacing throws us around--our confusion shared. In order to give viewers the right tools to solve the mystery, pacing gives us the right moments to think, to invoke a “zen-like” state. Through a careful combination of audio and visual cues, these moments of calm become a foothold towards finding the truth.

Sci-Fi is certainly one of the most creative genres in literature, film, and video games. For as long as anime has been around, it has also done an excellent job of contributing to the expansion of Sci-Fi and, in some ways, been ahead of the curve. For starters, Sci-Fi in anime helped pioneer the mecha genre from Tetsujin 28 to the Mobile Suit Gundam franchise, and anime has creatively given audiences a lot of unique space operas as good alternatives to the likes of Star Trek and Star Wars. Some notable examples of space opera anime include Space Battleship Yamato and Legend of the Galactic Heroes. Just how Jules Vernes’ novels, such as From the Earth to the Moon, were ahead of their time, the original Ghost in the Shell film achieved such a distinction with how it predicted that the internet would affect society and individual identity. For the last decade, Sci-Fi in anime still manages to break new creative boundaries. For this list, we would like to share with you our Top 10 Best Sci-Fi Anime of the 2010s.

    10. Dr. Stone

    [sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="crunchyroll" url="https://www.crunchyroll.com/dr-stone" ]
    [en][information_general item1 = "Episodes" content1="24" item2="Aired" content2="July 5, 2019 – December 13, 2019" post_id=""][/en]
    [es][information_general item1 = "Episodios" content1="___content1___" item2="Emisión" content2="___content2___" post_id=""][/es]

kicking off this list, we have Dr. Stone. Due to its story and setting, it takes the notion of Sci-Fi back to basics as humanity has been petrified for thousands of years. During that time period, the Earth reverts back to its natural primitive state and modern society and technology instantly collapse. However, teenage science enthusiast Senkuu Ishigami, who has broken free from his stone prison, uses his knowledge and passion to help rebuild the world. By using the most primitive of tools, he can do more than just reinvent the wheel! He can bring back electricity, communications, and modern medicine (and ramen and cola)! In addition to its distinguishing setting, what makes Dr. Stone a worthy selection for this list is how the series goes out of its way to educate viewers on how Senkuu’s experiments work. When Senkuu wants to make antibiotics to treat pneumonia, the series provides a flow chart and an explanation (courtesy of Mecha Senkuu) of the process. Some of the experiments look applicable to the layman, and there are others where the anime also warns the audience to not try them at home.

    9. Uchuu Kyoudai (Space Brothers)

    [sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="sentai" url="" ]
    [en][information_general item1 = "Episodes" content1="99" item2="Aired" content2="April 1, 2012 – March 22, 2014" post_id=""][/en]
    [es][information_general item1 = "Episodios" content1="___content1___" item2="Emisión" content2="___content2___" post_id=""][/es]

Compared to the rest of the entries on this list, Uchuu Kyoudai is more on the side of actual science but still captures the spirit of Sci-Fi. As opposed to using giant mechs, cyborgs, or flying cars, like Dr. Stone, Uchuu Kyoudai provides the audience with something more realistically educational as it portrays what it takes to be an astronaut and what space is really like. Uchuu Kyoudai shows that when astronauts go to space, the smallest mistake can mean instant doom! What makes this anime universal to all audiences is that it’s about never giving up and being true to oneself. It shows we can all make our dreams come true, but we have to put in the hard work and make sacrifices. The anime does an excellent job of equally showing the good and bad that comes with pursuing one’s dreams and at the same time, demonstrates that we have to deal with failure. It also portrays how certain sacrifices can have negative effects, most notably with one’s relationships. Through the hard work and perseverance of the Nanba brothers and the rest of the cast, viewers of all backgrounds can learn what it takes to truly be the best we can be.

    8. Aldnoah.Zero

    [en][information_general item1 = "Episodes" content1="12" item2="Aired" content2=" July 6, 2014 – September 21, 2014" post_id=""][/en]
    [es][information_general item1 = "Episodios" content1="___content1___" item2="Emisión" content2="___content2___" post_id=""][/es]

In the world of Aldnoah.Zero, Elon Musk’s dream of mankind migrating to Mars has come true thanks to the use of teleportation devices found on the moon. Those who went to Mars created their own nation and declared war against those who stayed on Earth. After a tragic calamity, a ceasefire was declared and everyone left each other alone for the next 15 years until Mars’ princess falls victim to an assassination plot. While there is no denying that mecha anime taking place in space are a dime a dozen, recent events while drafting this list made us realize that what is portrayed in Aldnoah.Zero is now more relevant than ever. With the recent tensions in the world, it’s natural that people are concerned that a war could start (especially with all the World War III memes). Aldnoah.Zero shows how war can affect people, most notably teenagers. While all anime fans know it’s rather common for mecha anime to use teenagers as pilots, Aldnoah.Zero does a great job of showing how it can affect their development and outlooks.

    7. Steins;Gate

    [sourceLink asin="B00DUCND18" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]
    [en][information_general item1 = "Episodes" content1="24" item2="Aired" content2="April 6, 2011 – September 14, 2011" post_id=""][/en]
    [es][information_general item1 = "Episodios" content1="___content1___" item2="Emisión" content2="___content2___" post_id=""][/es]

A lot of Sci-Fi properties have explored time travel such as The Time Machine, A Sound of Thunder and most notably, Back to the Future. Steins;Gate, on the other hand, takes the notion of time travel as it relates to a future where the world collapses due to World War III and it’s up to Rintaro Okabe and his friends to save it. Despite Rintaro’s childish antics when it comes to expressing his passion for science, deep down inside, he’s a very caring person. What makes this anime a great addition to this list is how it explores modern social problems in Japan, and how technology is beneficial and consequential to them. Most notably, through the modern use of cell phones, viewers can see how they have helped and hindered communication (as they play a role in the time traveling). In general, we see how people can be connected more than ever thanks to cell phones. On the other hand, we see how it can negatively affect face-to-face communication as it’s portrayed through Moeka who prefers to use text messaging even in-person. When it comes to the worst of extremities, the series portrays how technology can cause greed and, in effect, cause wars. When the series continues in Steins;Gate 0, the audience can see how the events of the first series negatively affect Okabe as it introduces new themes regarding memories and what defines reality.

    6. Sidonia no Kishi (Knights of Sidonia)

    [sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="sentai" url="" ]
    [en][information_general item1 = "Episodes" content1="12" item2="Aired" content2="April 11, 2014 – June 27, 2014" post_id=""][/en]
    [es][information_general item1 = "Episodios" content1="___content1___" item2="Emisión" content2="___content2___" post_id=""][/es]

In the past few years, Netflix has provided viewers with original anime content. However, do any of you readers know what the first original Netflix anime was? It happens to be Knights of Sidonia! It’s a Sci-Fi series that masterfully combines mecha, space opera, and post-Apocalyptic genres for something that is still unique! For the last few thousand years, humanity has been living in fear not knowing that today could very well be their last as they hide from an extraterrestrial threat. In order to cope with their situation, humanity has adapted in a manner that they can only survive by cloning themselves. Despite the population control portrayed in this series, it is still very character-driven both individually and with their interpersonal relationships. Through the cloning aspect, it gives the audience an idea of what it means to be an individual. Even if the world allows human cloning, would a clone just be a copy of the individual? Or is it really a distinct human in itself? Last, putting aside all the changes humanity has forced upon itself portrayed in Knights of Sidonia, it shows that in humanity’s darkest hour, they will never give up and will keep fighting. While people can really be cruel to each other, when they share a common goal (or struggle), they can truly achieve remarkable things.

    5. Koukaku Kidoutai: Arise Alternative Architecture (Ghost in the Shell: Arise -Alternative Architecture)

    [sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="B00MODCJQO" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]
    [en][information_general item1 = "Episodes" content1="10" item2="Aired" content2="April 5, 2015 – June 14, 2015" post_id=""][/en]
    [es][information_general item1 = "Episodios" content1="___content1___" item2="Emisión" content2="___content2___" post_id=""][/es]

In this soft reboot of the Ghost in the Shell franchise, viewers are given a new origin story of Makoto and her journey into how she was recruited into Section 9. Just like its predecessors, Arise largely explores the concept of individual identity in a world of advanced technology. Similar to how the original manga and movie predicted that the internet would be a part of everyday life, Arise redirects the original themes into how people can convert themselves into machines. Through Makoto’s journey in Arise, the organization she initially works for is the legal owner of her body. Naturally, this causes a conflict of interest, but we do have to wonder what could happen when people can get a cybernetic body in who knows how many years from now. Take, for example, you buy a house with a mortgage. Until you pay off the mortgage, the house technically belongs to the bank and if you can’t pay it, then the bank takes the house. Arise, in a way, addresses such a situation through getting a cybernetic body. Let's say 50 years from now, we can take out loans to get ourselves a cybernetic body. If such an instance happens, is that body truly ours? Or does it belong to the bank or company until the loan is paid off? Thanks to these thought-provoking notions, Ghost in the Shell still knows how to be ahead of the curve when it comes to the rise of technology and its (highly likely) effects on society.

    4. Uchuu Senkan Yamato 2199 (Star Blazers: Space Battleship Yamato 2199)

Some of you may accuse of cheating by using a remake from a 1970s anime but, as we have reviewed, this remake proves how far Sci-Fi has gone in the world of anime. For generations, Sci-Fi properties in America such as Star Trek have been used as a vehicle for progressive ideas. The remake of Uchuu Senkan Yamato not only faithfully retells the story of the original anime, but injects a lot of modern-day progressiveness into it. In the original series, Yuki (and a bit of Starsha) serves as the ONLY female character and a good portion of the time, she is subjected to Analyzer’s sexual harassment that wouldn’t fly in a post-#MeToo world. The remake provides new female characters who serve a significant role as they are portrayed as equally important as the male characters. In addition to more female characters, the remake does away with what modern society calls toxic masculinity, which was prominent throughout the original series. In the first Yamato series, Koudai (and his brother) was mostly driven by toxic masculinity with how he conducted himself. His attitude was that he would only do things that a real man would do. In the remake, Koudai is a much more passionate character and leader, showing that nobody should do things for the sake of just proving their manhood. Whether any of you readers are new to or familiar with the Yamato franchise, these changes were very necessary to show how far society has come with how gender equality has progressed in Japan and throughout the world.

    3. Kanata no Astra (Astra Lost in Space)

If you could combine Lost in Space with The Breakfast Club, then you’ve got Kanata no Astra. In the not too distant future, mankind has migrated to space and high school students can go on a camping trip to distant planets! As the main group arrives on the planet, they’re engulfed by a mysterious sphere and transported light-years away from where they started! Thankfully, they find a functioning spaceship that can take them back to their home planet. While this series debuted towards the end of the decade, what makes Kanata no Astra a great selection is that it teaches us that if everybody works together, they can overcome all adversities. Not only that, no matter what one’s skills are, they can always be of contribution and a little help goes a long way. However, they are still subject to giving into raging teenage hormones, and it’s only natural that tension can and will happen between crew members. As the series progresses, it takes a turn where it becomes a mystery when they discover that their situation is no accident and the audience can see how it affects their relationships. However, Kanata’s faith and optimism helps bring them all together so they can come home. In the end, it teaches the audience that even if humanity migrates to space, there is still no escaping our nature but when we come together, we can achieve great things and exceed expectations.

    2. Psycho-Pass

    [sourceLink asin="B00HFC30A8" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]
    [en][information_general item1 = "Episodes" content1="22" item2="Aired" content2="October 12, 2012 – March 22, 2013" post_id=""][/en]
    [es][information_general item1 = "Episodios" content1="___content1___" item2="Emisión" content2="___content2___" post_id=""][/es]

If Sci-Fi dystopian author Philip K. Dick could make an anime (or if an anime were ever inspired by his work), it would certainly be Psycho-Pass. Try to imagine something like The Minority Report (which was written by Dick) as an anime and that’s what Psycho-Pass is in a nutshell. Instead of precog, the dystopian Tokyo uses the Sybil System to read human emotions and the moment it detects any kind of criminal intent, law enforcement is instantly allowed to detain them, or in some cases, kill them. Akane, the main character, becomes an officer because she wants to uphold justice. When she is confronted with the truth of how justice is conducted in the world she lives in, that is when this anime truly shines as a Sci-Fi series as it explores conflict in both an internal and external sense. Internally for Akane, it’s dealing with the fact that human rights are being violated. Externally, she sees it as a necessary evil as she has to compromise in order to continue her work as a police officer. Ultimately, Psycho-Pass is about what people value more, security or freedom. Considering the scandals with Eric Snowden and the NSA during the Obama administration, we have to wonder if governments are considering such a system to control its citizens.

    1. Kidou Senshi Gundam: The Origin (Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin)

    [en][information_general item1 = "Episodes" content1="6" item2="Aired" content2="April 24, 2015 – May 5, 2018" post_id=""][/en]

We have to give the number one spot to Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin, which largely serves as an origin story for Char Aznable, the anti-hero (and sometimes anti-villain) of the UC Gundam timeline. Like a good number of the anime listed here, Gundam is another space opera, one of the dominating sub-genres of Sci-Fi. Thanks to the designs of Yasuhiko Yoshikazu (who even designed the original Gundam series), it shows that the quality of his art still holds up after 40 years. While advancements in technology have helped the quality of anime since the debut of the original Gundam, the designs of the characters, mobile suits, clothing, and environments remain unchanged in Origin to remain consistent with the original series and yet appeal to new and old audiences. In comparison to other space operas such as Yamato and Macross, the conflict in Gundam isn’t between humans and aliens, but amongst humans. While humans have migrated to space in the world of Gundam, the series demonstrates that despite these advancements, discrimination, war, and destruction still exist. While many are quick to blame the advancement of technology for some of humanity’s present problems, Gundam masterfully shows that, regardless, greed and the lust for power will always exist regardless of such inventions and that it’s still our responsibility to better ourselves.

Ray Bradbury, a legendary Sci-Fi author, once said that fantasies are about things that can’t happen, and science fiction is about things that can happen. With our top 10 selections, we feel that they embody that very saying. In the next decade, humans may finally visit Mars. When Elon Musk gets to Mars, will he claim it as his own planet? Or will he share it with the rest of humanity? In 2018, Spike TV hosted a Japan Vs USA contest of who made the best robot proving that mechas are already here! And it’s not just the progress of technology that comes with it, but the positive and negative effects it has on the world as well. As we previously stated, the original Ghost in the Shell correctly predicted how the internet would affect our perceptions of identity and reality. Now that we’re in a world of social media, people ponder the image that others project on such sites if they’re real, or fake. With advancements in medical technology, it’s only a matter of time until we can exchange an organic body for a mechanical one. When that happens, would those bodies still be our bodies? If you have seen (or ever get the chance to see) our selections, we feel that the themes presented in them strongly represent what Sci-Fi is all about, things that can happen.

Mairimashita! Iruma-kun (Welcome to Demon School!) is a bright and peppy comedy anime featuring a 12-year-old human Suzuki Iruma, who is unfortunately sold to a demon by his deadbeat parents. His buyer: an elite demon who happens to be the chairman of the demon school Babylys! Finding himself being treated better than he ever was in the human world, Iruma ends up attending Babylys but he is forced to keep his human identity a secret from the other students. Does this ring a bell? Well, if you’re a fan of the 2008 anime Rosario + Vampire, you have yourself a treat! For those who can’t remember, Rosario + Vampire is an anime about a young man named Tsukune Aono who finds himself attending a school for monsters and demons because he doesn’t have the grades to attend anywhere else. The school aims to teach these creatures to coexist with humans; however, Tsukune is in a precarious position because the school has one major rule concerning humans: if they are found on the school premises, they are to be executed! The two shows are extremely similar, let’s get to the reasons why!

    1.Similar Main Premise

Rosario + Vampire and Mairimashita! Iruma-kun (Welcome to Demon School!) are similar on a basic level because they present the same kind of central plot: a human protagonist finds himself attending a school for supernatural creatures while also having to keep his humanity a secret from the student body and the staff at the school. Despite this, there is always someone who comes to realize the protagonists’ true identity!

    2.Similar Main Characters

One thing that stands out to the monster characters in both series is the main character. While many go the entire duration of their respective series not realizing that the main character is a human, the main character’s good-natured personality does not go unnoticed and becomes the very reason why they’re able to befriend monsters and demons alike. Both Tsukune and Iruma end up being taken care of by monsters – Iruma’s demonic caretaker being his new grandfather Sullivan, while Tsukune’s initially taken care of by the vampire Akashiya Moka, before other characters appear. Both Tsukune and Iruma have powerful love interests in their respective titles, with Tsukune having a group of close friends and powerful monsters serving under this banner; and Iruma having someone like the student council president Ameri filling this role!

3.Both Shows Humanize Monsters and Demons

While they introduce their respective main characters’ new environments as something to be feared, both Mairimashita! Iruma-kun (Welcome to Demon School!) and Rosario + Vampire show a less monstrous, evil temperament to the demon societies that they illustrate, rather painting these creatures as beings with feelings and communities as vibrant and varied as what one would find in the human world. The main character is hence able to assimilate because they can engage with each character from a more emotional standpoint beyond the initial premise of fear and horror!

To wrap things up, there are some clear major similarities between both Mairimashita! Iruma-kun (Welcome to Demon School!) and Rosario + Vampire that would make fans of either title shiver in excitement at the chance to watch the other. While there are similarities, there are also major differences; like how Mairimashit!a Iruma-kun (Welcome to Demon School!) seems to continue to tease the protagonist’s untapped potential, while Rosario + Vampire is focused on building a harem for the romance inclined Tsukune! What do you think about these shows? Drop a comment below and let’s get talking!

Magia Record: Mahou Shoujo Madoka☆Magica Gaiden (Magia Record: Puella Magi Madoka☆Magica Side Story) and the Middle Ground of Ideas

Magia Record: Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica Gaiden (Magia Record: Puella Magi Madoka Magica Side Story) is an anticipated addition to a beloved franchise. As a side story, Magia Record is an adaptation of a mobile game with a cast of new characters. With a new story comes a new direction. Magia Record builds upon older ideas while distinguishing itself from its predecessor. This new direction manifests in an emphasis on a visual “center,” a coming together of different myths, philosophies, and arts. Before continuing, I’d like to caution readers. As the anime is young, I’ll highlight observations I think are noteworthy, but please consider this article a pondering of ideas more than an analysis of them. With that stated, I hope my insight proves interesting.

An Emphasis on Center: a Visual Middle

Whereas its predecessor used lighting to show a world of separation (light/dark, hope/despair, innocence/knowledge), Magia Record seems to emphasize a middle ground, a gathering place of various ideas. With the last three episodes, certain observations support this. To begin, three cities are confirmed within Magia Record: Takarazaki City (the home of Iroha), Kamihama City (the home of several new characters), and lastly, Mitakihara City (the main city of Madoka Magica). Kamihama City is the center of our story, the gathering spot for witches, magical girls from different cities, and several rumors. In the first episode, it’s mentioned that “Magical Girls can be saved if they go to Kamihama City.” Near the end of this episode, there’s a dream sequence where Iroha chases after her sister Ui. As Ui walks into the distance, she stops for a moment and turns towards the camera. This shot places her between the moon above and the sun setting at her feet. The curvature of the ground, makes it seem as if the world rests behind her--that Kamihama City exists between reality and dream. However, unlike rumored, it’s not necessarily a sanctuary. Rats are shown instinctively running away, implying danger. At the end of episode 3, we’re given a shot of freeway signs. It reads that 3 highways (Hokuyo-ku, Sankyo-ku, and Chuo-ku) connect to Kamihama City despite coming from different directions. This implies, “all roads, whether in a dream or reality, connect to Kamihama City.” This city is the center of salvation, the key to Iroha’s lost memory, and the endpoint of insidious rumors. In a way, it’s the center of many movements both figurative and literal.

    Renaissance and Context

The original Puella Magi Madoka Magica was rich with imagery. From its prominent churches to the Creation of Adam in episode 11, Madoka Magica conveyed a story of duality, before and afters, and separation. However, Magia Record seems to take a different approach. As stated in the previous section, Magia Record seems to emphasize “a center” whether that’s in its setting, plot, or in visual shots. One reason might be deduced from its visual designs. Featured throughout Magia Record are possible borrowings of Renaissance ideas. The Renaissance was an emergence of the art, literature, philosophy, and history that coincided with a revival of interest in Greek and Roman culture. This period is debated amongst scholars to be roughly between the 15th century and 16th century, but some argue it started as early as the 12th century and ended possibly in the 17th century. However, while the Renaissance occurred all over Europe, Italy was a major center for trade, resulting in Italy’s impact on the Renaissance. As trade was crucial, the study of astrology was important as it guided ships from one port to the next. This focus eventually leads to Nicolaus Copernicus developing heliocentricism (although, if this is solely his own idea is debated), the idea that the sun is the center of the universe. With that brief overview, let’s now discuss Magia Record.

Kamihama City: A Center of Ideas

Kamihama City is at a cultural crossroads. As the center of the story, characters migrate there for different reasons: salvation, memory, and rumors. However, characters don’t only bring themselves, they can also bring their culture and “trade” their ideas. To reach Kamihama City, characters use public transportation. In particular, trains are a common choice for our young characters. At each train stop, prominent astrological symbols are displayed, reminding viewers of the ancient use of astrology--navigation. In episode 1, once Iroha crashes into Kamihama City, Zenobia, a sandbox witch, “greets her.” Zenobia’s name means “life of Zeus” or “daughter of Zeus,” and her design features a planet with rings for her top. This planet is most likely Jupiter (which, like Saturn, also has rings around it). Jupiter is the Roman name of the Greek god Zeus. This melding of cultures goes further. 12 minutes into episode 2, Iroha visits a hospital where her sister was presumedly hospitalized. Satomi Medical Center is located within Kamihama City, and during a dream sequence, viewers are able to see its design. Above the front desk is the warrior goddess Athena, a Greek Goddess who presided over wisdom, law, strategy, and the arts. She is commonly depicted wearing a helmet and holding a spear and shield. In the Satomi Medical Center, her shield has a gorgon’s head, fitting as she was the goddess who gave Perseus a shield to slay Medusa and her sisters. Continuing further, after the fight with the sheep witch in episode 2, Iroha is saved by Rena, Kaede, and Momoko. They bring her to a building owned by a Coordinator. According to Momoko, this building is “like a hospital, or like a counseling center for Magical Girls.” In episode 3, we finally see the Coordinator at work. Her name is Mitama Yakumo and her job is getting magical girls “adjusted.” She explains, “Having your Soul Gem adjusted can bring power to the fore that you never knew you had before!” As she clarifies, a famous Renaissance drawing flashes on the screen, the Vitruvian Man by Leonardo da Vinci. This image eventually cuts to Yakumo turning on lights as her explanation “dawns” on the viewers. Just like Kamihama City, Yakumo’s building is a mixture of ideas. To begin, just as her title implies (Coordinator), her building is filled with devices that tell location. There are “globe-like” structures held together with a frame. This frame allows it to spin like a typical globe one might see in a classroom. However, replace the middle (the earth) with what Yakumo really coordinates--soul gems. These soul gems are designed to look like birdcages, borrowing imagery from the original Madoka Magica (and the Rebellion movie). The pillars that hold the roof are also distinctly Greek pillars. Placed behind these pillars is a bright wall, lit in a translucent blue. At its center is a cross with “coordinates” at key sections. As I’ve discussed in my Madoka Magica article series, the original show uses religious (Christian) imagery. The Renaissance is also a period where devout artists painted key biblical subjects like the Madonna, Jesus Christ, and God. While this cross could be a coincidence, it wouldn’t be illogical to assume otherwise--especially after episode 3. Characters from Mitakihara City (Madoka Magica’s setting) are implied to be joining the story. From a different perspective, that cross could be an intersection. Just as Yakumo is trying to coordinate groups together, Kamihama City is at the intersection of dreams and reality, myths and science, ideas and rumors. It is the place where both witches and magical girls are finding a new center.

    Final Thoughts

Magia Record is a collage of characters, settings, and ideas. While it’s still early on, what I’ve seen has a lot of promise. As stated before, this article is merely a pondering of ideas and observations. However, if my thoughts have proved interesting, I hope you’ll continue watching the show or take an interest in it.

One of the defining genres of the gaming world has come back to life on the Switch! Shoot em’ ups are BACK!

    • Publisher: NIS America
    • Developer:Psykio, CITY CONNECTION CO., Ltd
    • Release Date: Jan 21, 2020
Psikyo Shooting Stars Alpha - Launch Trailer (Nintendo Switch)

    Who it Caters to

Back in the late 80’s to the mid-’90s, shoot em’ ups, or ‘Shmups’ for short, took the world by storm with its fast-paced and frantic gameplay. The action would be non-stop and players would throw their tokens (or coins depending on which arcade you ventured to) into the arcade cabinet, trying their hardest to complete the game in one sitting. Before you know it, all of your tokens would vanish and you’d have to run to the vendor to restock. Those were the golden days of arcade gaming but sadly those glorious moments have dissipated, as the arcade scene as a whole has gone extinct, at least in North America. In Japan, the scene continues to thrive and Shump cabinets are abundant, with classics like Strikers 1945 still playable for the retro junkies to dive into. But of course, this is only possible if you’re living in Japan...or at least that was the case until now because NIS America is proud to bring you a collection of some of the best Shmups in arcade history. Say hello to Psikyo Shooting Stars Alpha for the Nintendo Switch!

    What to Expect

Ah...good old TATE mode...As with any collection of classics, Psikyo Shooting Stars Alpha is catered to those who have a love for the Shmup genre, and need their quick fix of explosive action. Psikyo Shooting Stars Alpha comes with 6 titles: Strikers 1945, Strikers 1945 II, Strikers 1945 III, SOL Divide (Sword of Darkness), Dragon Blaze, and Zero Gunner 2. As you can clearly see, Strikers 1945 is a very popular series and is one of the early frontrunners in the sleeper genre, but continues to thrive even to this day. Anyone out there who’s looking for a title that’s challenging enough to keep you coming back for more, while still retaining that retro visual charm, then there’s no reason why you shouldn’t buy Psikyo Shooting Stars Alpha!
    [ad_top2 class="mt40 mb40"]

    Visuals

On the point of visuals, Psikyo Shooting Stars Alpha combines a modern and flashy presentation while still retaining the retro charm that made these classics glitter with excitement. All of the games within the collection are quite distinct in their own way and a couple even follows somewhat of a short plot to keep the player engaged. It’s by no means an RPG tale of sorts but the small plot allows for the game to run smoothly, giving players the incentive to complete the game and see an ending. One of the most visually pleasing of the bunch is Strikers 1945 III, which released in early 2000, and even to this day still manages to look superb in its 32bit form. Dragon Blaze is another favorite of ours which contains a nice little story of its own, and from a visual standpoint still looks crisp even on the big screen.

    Sound/Music

Nothing is more sublime than to hear the clashing of metal or the bullets tearing apart an enemy brigade, as you fight your way through hordes of enemies to reach the end goal. Psikyo Shooting Stars Alpha is jam-packed full of fun but it’s very aesthetically pleasing to the ears, especially for those who grew up in the early generations of gaming. It’s authentic and fulfilling in its own way, not dissuading you from the gameplay and keeping you fully engaged with everything taking place screen. The music and sound effects are fitting for the genre as they evoke the emotions of excitement, motivation, and thrill.

    Gameplay

While many of these titles started out in the arcades and require players to often use a joystick to control the movement of your ships, the Nintendo Switch version of these manages to retain all of the smooth controls without demeaning the game. We used both the joy-cons connected to the Switch along with using the Pro Controller, and we can honestly say that it’s better to play with the Pro Controller since you have a much more seamless experience. The joy-con analog sticks are just too small to really get used to but the Pro Controller is big enough that you can play for hours and not feel any sort of irritation in your thumb, as you constantly blast enemies into oblivion. Another positive about Psikyo Shooting Stars Alpha is that at any time, should you ever feel like leaving one game and jump into another, it’s all seamless. There’s little to no loading times and so it’s almost as if you’re jumping from one cabinet to the next without any interruption. No longer will you need any fat stacks of tokens sitting next to you in order to continue, as Psikyo Shooting Stars Alpha allows you to jump right back into the fray even after you’ve succumbed to a game over, allowing the action to continue almost instantly. While Shumps are generally tackled alone there’s the option of teaming up with a friend to obliterate the enemy and collect rewards, as you both strive to complete missions as swiftly as possible. 2-player mode is such a blast when you have a friend who knows what they’re doing and can assist you when things start to go sour, and you need those extra kill points. Much like in the arcades where one cabinet contained 2 joysticks, Psikyo Shooting Stars Alpha reflects that beautifully with the co-op option, granting Shmup fans the permission to go all-out for hours on end together.
    [ad_middle class="mt40 mb40"]

    Honey's Gameplay Consensus:

One of the only drawbacks of Psikyo Shooting Stars Alpha is that it doesn’t contain any sort of online leaderboard or online multiplayer, which was a little disappointing. It certainly doesn’t bereave you of the true Shmup experience but it would’ve been great if players had the opportunity of jumping online, and tackling missions with other retro junkies around the world. Better yet, giving players the chance to test their skills and create the highest score possible for other Shmup addicts to try and beat would’ve been a blast. Sadly that’s only a pipedream for us but perhaps next month, we hope that Psikyo Shooting Stars Bravo will allow us to take our skills online and really have a blast!

    Honey's Pros:

    • Relive the glory days of the Shmup genre, one that helped to redefine the gaming world as a whole.
    • Visually the game retains its retro charm and plays smoothly, even on the big screen! No lag!
    • There’s so much variety in the games you can play and with 6 in total, there’s plenty of replay value for players to dive right back into.

    Honey's Cons:

    • The lack of online services really is a bummer, since Shmups are generally co-op based and giving players a chance to play with others around the world would’ve been amazing. Hopefully, we’ll see something in Psikyo Shooting Stars Alpha Bravo!

    Honey's Final Verdict:

Psikyo Shooting Stars Alpha served up a nice plate of savory fun and we can only hope to see more love for throwback titles from NIS America in the near future. With an almost endless library of titles in the retro arcade vault, there’s really no reason to continue releasing golden nuggets like this one! To all the retro junkies out there, pick up Psikyo Shooting Stars Alpha and truly savor in the endless array of action, excitement, and frenzy. If you’re new to Shmups then Psikyo Shooting Stars Alpha is certainly the place to start because you have a collection of titles that will continue to stand the test of time, because of how great they are. Until next time!

“An Emotionally Charged Night in Maihama”

    • Event: fhána (ファナ) where you are Tour 2019 -narrative-
    • Date: Saturday, December 14, 2019
    • Location: Maihama Amphitheatre, Chiba
    [ad_top2 class="mt40"]

Intro: Not a Bad Seat in the House

fhána had a huge turn-out for the third show in there “where you are Tour 2019” in Maihama on Saturday, December 14, 2019. It was the group’s first time performing in Maihama Amphitheatre, which holds a little over 2000 people. The venue itself was great for a concert, with wrap-around stadium seating but no one was actually that far away. Regardless of where fans’ seats were, they could likely see the faces of the musicians and really feel like they were part of the show. Even fhána themselves commented on how beautiful and comfortable Maihama Amphitheatre was! Add to that the walk to the venue from the station through Tokyo Disneyland’s Christmas illuminations, and you have an audience that is happy and ready for some fun before the show even begins. fhána’s show was almost completely sold out. Most of the audience was male, with the majority being in their late 20s to early 30s. Throughout the crowd, though, there were younger and older people, and a handful of female fans as well. Many fans came dressed in fhána t-shirts and carrying bags from past tours. Once the amphitheatre doors opened, there was also a shop for merchandise from this particular show as well. Because the December 14th show was one of four, each with their own name, a lot of the merchandise was exclusive only to this show. That made all the t-shirts, pins, stickers, and tiny flags with the -narrative- logo once-in-a-lifetime goods for fans to pick up! Of course, many people changed into their new shirts before the show started to show their support for the night. There were also flower displays for the band in the lobby of the venue, along with present boxes for fans to leave small gifts or letters to their favourite members. The -narrative- show’s logo was green, so inside the amphitheatre everything was cast in a green light while the fans waited for the show to begin. The energy in the room was actually quite laid-back and calm. No one was speaking too loudly, and no one was screaming or causing any chaos. fhána’s fans were polite and waited patiently for the show to begin. let’s dive in!

[balloon_speech align="left" text="Did you notice that Towana’s dress was green to match the colour of the -narrative- theme for the night?" image="bee-love"] [balloon_speech align="right" text="Oh, you’re right! I hadn’t even thought about that; that’s such a thoughtful touch." image="honey-happy4"]
    [ad_middle]

Performance: A Roller Coaster of Emotions

The concert started off dramatically, with the first song “white light”. Suiting the name of the song, fhána entered the stage as it was filled with smoke and bright lights, and nothing more than their silhouette could be seen for the entire first number. The moment the band entered the stage, the entire audience stood up, and started to bob along. Things got even more upbeat with “星屑のインターリュード”, and that’s when the party really started. As the normal stage lights came on, the four main band members (Towana, Kevin Mitsunaga, Yuxuki Waga, and Jun’ichi Sato) were revealed along with the stand-up orchestra on a raised stage in the back consisting of three violins and a cello. That was also when the fans started to really wake up and get into the show, doing elaborate hand gestures along with the music. Everyone knew exactly what to do, showing that most of the audience were true fans of fhána! As the music continued to escalate into more and more upbeat songs, especially “Unplugged”. While Towana clearly controlled the stage with her fantastic singing most of the night, it was Kevin who really stole the show during “Unplugged”. He and Towana had a bit of a rap battle, and Kevin led the audience in clapping and chanting with a lot of enthusiasm right from the edge of the stage! It was impossible not to catch some of his high energy and get excited, too. All along the way, the stage lights added to the drama and feeling. They changed from monochrome lighting for some songs, like “ユーレカ”, to strobe lights for “真っ白”, dramatic red lights for “Do you realize?” and more. One of the coolest parts of the show happened about halfway through before fhána began ‘Code “Genius”?’. At concerts in Japan, there are no photos or videos allowed of any kind, and definitely no posting to social media. But the band stopped their almost continuous playing (there were very few breaks between songs the entire night!) to surprise everyone by asking them to take out their mobile phones. Then, even more shockingly, Jun’ichi asked the fans to record ‘Code “Genius”?’ and post it on their Instagram stories! The fans were so excited by this special chance and everyone took advantage of the unheard-of phenomenon. Emotions were already high when halfway through the show, fhána came to the title song for this tour—“where you are”. And just when it seemed like things couldn’t get any more emotional, they did! “where you are” was delivered in such a powerful way, especially with its beautiful orchestra break in the middle. Behind the stage was a huge screen, and it alternated between being lit up with only red or only white lights. This left the four orchestra members silhouetted against the screen as they played, which was an awesome effect for such a turning point song in the concert. From there, things finally started to slow down a little with “inst(願い事)” to let everyone get recharged and have a little break. Then things went straight back to upbeat and crazy with everyone having a great time! As the main show came to a close, the excitement and fun reached a climax with “青空のラプソディ”. All the hall lights came on so that the crowd felt one with the band, and with Kevin at the front leading the fans in dancing, hand gestures, and clapping, everyone was swept away at that moment. The audience even had a chance to sing along with the chorus of the song! It was almost time for the show to finish, and fhána was not about to let their fans down at the end. They ended the show with one last emotionally charged number, “僕を見つけて”, and left the stage as the lights went down.

[balloon_speech align="right" text="I still can’t believe that fhána let us put Code “Genius” on Instagram!" image="bee-blushing"] [balloon_speech align="left" text="That’s not something you see at very many shows in Japan! It was really cool to have such a special chance - and make our friends jealous, too!!" image="honey-love"]

Outro: Just One Theme of Many.

Even as the last song was fading and the band members had left the stage, the cries for an encore began throughout the audience. Some fans even stood on their feet, leading the chanting that went on for over ten minutes. Despite a nearly two hour performance, fans were not willing to give up and leave just yet. Of course, fhána answered their call, returning to the stage all wearing tour t-shirts and ready for a few more songs! The three encore songs were all slower-paced than most of the rest of the show, but also a lot more emotional. They left the white hall lights on as well rather than using so many special lighting effects, making the encore feel more intimate and the band that much more accessible and closer. fhána also used the encore time to introduce each of the members of the band, including the standing orchestra, and give them a chance for individual applause from the fans. fhána also had a surprise in store for the audience - a duet with only Towana’s incredible voice and Jun’ichi Satou’s beautiful piano. The rest of the band remained silent and still, letting the two sing a short but powerful piece as the audience could only watch and be amazed at the raw talent being showcased. It was easily one of the most powerful moments of the entire night! Finally, as the show drew to a close, fhána took extra time on the stage simply to thank the fans and bowed many times, and throw a few of the exclusive -narrative- flags into the audience for some lucky people to catch. It was great to see how genuinely appreciative of their fans of the members of fhána seemed to be, the smiles on their faces very real. What made fhána “where you are Tour 2019” -narrative- so special is that it was a unique show that had never been done before, and will never be done again. fhána did four shows in their “where you are Tour 2019,” with the first two being in Osaka and Nagoya and the last two in Tokyo. Each night was a different theme with a different colour, feeling, and setlist. The show that fans saw on December 14th was unique, and not one that anyone else other than those in the room that night will ever have the chance to repeat again. Plus fans that were following the band on their tour and going to every show always got to see something different! It also made the show unpredictable, leaving fans always waiting to see what the next song was going to be. It was a once-in-a-lifetime show that fhána fans will not quickly forget.

Akihabara is known for its wide range of appealing cafes catering to all sorts of tastes, but the combined Vampire Danso (women dressed as men) and Vampire Maid Café Dracula and Alucard manage to both be specific and universally-appealing! Vampires are widely popular even outside of manga and anime but Dracula and Alucard’s proximity to anime fans with a taste for something different definitely benefits the business. Nearly everyone can find their type here with the Alucard side offering cute and girly maid-vampires while Dracula offers regal, masculine vampires.

    The Experience

A short elevator ride up from the streets of Akihabara transports you to a vampire castle. The walls are covered in elegant black and red wallpaper and from the ceiling hang numerous red, black, and white gothic style chandeliers. Candles, blood-platters, skulls, and other ominous paraphernalia cover the room and give it an almost busy feeling even with the spooky atmosphere. On one side, vampire girls in maid outfits with cute accessories serve customers in a rather open area. Dracula is just on the other side of a wooden wall that nearly divides the two areas and is a much more intimate space. The women on that side, dress like distinguished bishounen vampire lords complete with capes and epaulets. Everyone clearly takes a lot of time on their appearance which enhances the experience.

Many times, you can find one of these vampires promoting their bars on the streets of Akiba and they will be happy to escort you should you find yourself lost. Once inside, you’ll be seated at a long table and, depending on how crowded it is, may be sat next to other guests. Talking among other customers and vampires not currently serving you personally is highly encouraged and there’s a generally friendly atmosphere. You’ll be asked if you’d like the drink special or to just order food and drink separately. If you’re feeling generous, you can also order a drink for your new vampire friend! The staff are all quick to keep your glass full as well and will talk with you as you enjoy your drinks and/or food. At the end of the hour, you have the option of extending your time or taking your leave but make sure to keep track of time yourself as it’s not the policy for staff to warn you.

    Additional info

While knowing Japanese will make things easier, there’s a handy English menu and several of the vampires speak some English. They’re all committed to ensuring you have a good time as well and will try their best to communicate as best they can so even shy customers can enjoy themselves. Food options include snacks like gyoza and chips and full meals of fried rice, pasta, and omurice that your vampire will decorate with ketchup. Photos of the inside and staff are not allowed but you can buy polaroid pictures with the vampires present to help you remember your special dark time!

    Final Thoughts

While Dracula and Alucard may not have the same mature and elegant atmosphere as the Vampire Café in Ginza, it’s the openness and friendliness that makes it such a fun place for vampire lovers. You won’t have to worry about being ignored as these vampires are great at engaging with customers young and old of any gender. Feel free to dress up or wear something casual and enjoy the beautiful, personable vampires day or night at Dracula and Alucard!

    Discussion Time

Waiting two weeks to know if Hachimaru and his allies saved the planet wasn’t an easy task but we made it. Not so ironically, our heroes also saved the day in chapter 33 of Samurai 8: Hachimaru Den! With the timer at a literal second, the warrior hit the control panel, stopping the missile launch! Everyone on the planet and above could finally sigh in relief even if some people ended up getting arrested due to their involvement in this illegal tournament devised by Benki. Hey, it beats being blown up, right? Back in the ship, Sanda has some final words with his old “friend” Ben and we learn that Benki killed Sanda’s dad not for revenge but for jealousy. Unlike Yoshitsune—Sanda’s dad—Ben had nothing and that left the big samurai to feel less fortunate. In a surprising last twist, Sanda seems to want to help Ben escape if he forks over one billion yen to their account. Ben gladly does so but Sanda ends up betraying him—no surprise there—and cuts his head off so the federation can detain him. Sanda then gives Hachimaru the money as a form of apology and thanking him for avenging his parents! Sanda and Ryu will be tried for their actions—in a thirty-minute hearing—but we’re sure the council will be lenient seeing as how they saved a planet and our heroes! After a grueling tournament, making new friends, and a nice cash reward, our samurai have finally reached the end of this exciting arc which should mean chapter 34 will be the start of a new journey for team Hachimaru! Till our young samurai takes his next steps to a new battle/journey, let’s discuss why reading chapter 33 of Samurai 8: Hachimaru Den is a must for those loving this series.

Why You Should Read Samurai 8: Hachimaru Den (Samurai 8: The Tale of Hachimaru) Chapter 33

    A Planet Saved!

Samurai 8: Hachimaru Den chapter 33 felt a bit like an action movie with that last-second save and we loved it. Finally, Ben has been defeated and our heroes have some cash to fund their next adventure! Hachimaru and his team are one step closer to saving the universe!

    Ben’s Heading to Jail

Benki has easily been one of the few samurai we hoped wouldn’t just get defeated but also face the hard arm of the law, and he did in this 33rd chapter! What’s even better is that Sanda was the one to deal the final blow, making sure our giant samurai won’t be recovering anytime soon!

    Final Thoughts

Samurai 8: Hachimaru Den 33 ends everything on a nice/clean note and that works quite well with this series. Now with the arc complete, our samurai are probably going to head off to find more allies and keys to save the universe and we’re all too pumped to see what battles/adventures await them next! Did you love or hate this arc of Samurai 8: Hachimaru Den? Comment below to let us know! If you’re looking for something other than the same old boring vanilla series then you’re in luck. Today we are going to be taking a look at 10 anime that are based around the thoughts of pain and pleasure, that’s right, we are looking at the sadism series! Sadism is a new theme in many hentai, but the shows that represent the genre still have a lot to offer. If you’re looking for an anime that will bring out your sadistic side, then look no further than the 10 shows below that are filled with concepts of pain and pleasure.

    [ad_top2 class="mt40 mb40"]

    10. Dropout

    [sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="DMM" url="https://www.dmm.co.jp/rental/ppr/-/detail/=/cid=84kmeg009r" ]

    [es][information_general item1 = "Episodios" content1="___content1___" item2="Emisión" content2="___content2___" post_id=""][/es]

Dropout is the story of students who become devices for public relief. If you can’t make the grades in the world of Dropout, then you will become available for public use. This concept really comes to a head during the second episode of the show with the concept of public toilets. Dropout begins by introducing us to girls with bad grades who love to suck dick. The sadistic tendencies really come out in the second episode though. In the episode, the girls are installed as public toilets where the men can go to relieve themselves at any time. One boy finds his favorite personal toilet has been installed in the bathroom and is tied up. This greatly upsets him and the pair begins to have rough sex.

    9. Pinkerton

Pinkerton is the story of a class monitor who gets on the male student’s nerves. To get her back they decide to introduce her to the world of sex. One again the second episode of the show is more geared towards sadism than the whole anime is. In the second episode, the hall monitor finds herself lying on a bed and being toyed with by her classmates. They even hook massaging patches to various parts of her body to give her additional pleasure while the play with her tits. As the episode moves around more classmates get in on the action and the hall monitor soon begins jerking off multiple cocks at once. When the boys get there feel of the handjobs, they lay her done and begin to have sex with the girl back to back. Later on, she is forced to wear a vibrator while class is in session leading to her quickly becoming embarrassed.

    8. Crimson Girls: Chikan Shihai

Crimson Girl is an anime based on the name of the author Crimson. The hentai is about two girls who rides trains to protect girls from possible molesters. This, of course, turns into a problem as the two girls find themselves being targeted by men well-versed in the art of pleasure. The first of the two girls is surrounded on the train by men. The group slowly begins rubbing up against her until they start playing with her breasts. Soon after, they wander down to her pussy where they begin to tease her even more before stipping off her clothes. They begin to finger the girls bringing her to a point of ecstasy before she runs off of the train at the next stop. Later they find the same girl again and manage to bring her back to a hotel room where they record their experience.

    7. Aku no Onna Kanbu

    [es][information_general item1 = "Episodios" content1="___content1___" item2="Emisión" content2="___content2___" post_id=""][/es]

Aku no Onna is a story about an underdog who acquires a special power and uses it to get revenge on his bosses. This is, of course, after they spent years putting the man down and trap him in a forcefield with their enemy. The story opens with the man forcing one of his bosses to masturbate in front of him. After watching her pleasure herself for a bit he takes the initiative to lean her back and shove his dick inside of her pussy. Before long he is having the same woman suck his dick while he sits in a chair. He even gets to release his load all over her when he’s done embarrassing her further. The rest of the show is all about the man forcing the girls to commit to embarrassing sexual favors for him.

    6. Amai Choubatsu: Watashi wa Kanshu Senyou Pet Season

    [sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="DMM" url="https://www.dmm.co.jp/mono/anime/-/detail/=/cid=n_600wvss00007" ]
    [en][information_general item1 = "Episodes" content1="13" item2="Aired" content2="April 2, 2018 to June 25, 2018" post_id=""][/en]
    [es][information_general item1 = "Episodios" content1="___content1___" item2="Emisión" content2="___content2___" post_id=""][/es]

Amai Choubatsu has an interesting set-up as the anime is directed at portraying a sadistic relationship. The anime begins when an innocent girl is imprisoned for embezzlement. Shocked and scared the judge then sends her to prison where she meets the warden Aki. The first episode opens up with Hina stripping down in front of Aki so that he can search for her. As he does, he teases her a bit and then insults her for reacting to his touch, before beginning to finger her. The anime goes through this same premise again and again as Aki punishes Hina for disobeying his orders or simply just being in the wrong place at the wrong time, before long the pair are even having sex. In one episode he even pleasures her while she is meeting with her fiance and by the end of the season, she is completely submissive to his commands.

    [ad_middle class="mb40"]

    [es][information_general item1 = "Episodios" content1="___content1___" item2="Emisión" content2="___content2___" post_id=""][/es]

Ryuudoji is another hentai with a fun and interesting premise surrounding a sex slave program. The protagonist Ryuudouji is cordially invited to the school to help train young women in the art of being a sex slave. The only problem is that Ryuudouji is completely sadistic about his training. One of the first scenes shows a girl being tied up so that Ryuudouji can ram into her from behind. This, of course, involves him training her ass and using a vibe in her pussy at the same time. Before long it cuts to a scene of another woman who is tied to a desk while sucking his dick while he looks over the information of his next sex slave. He soon gets bored of the blow job and starts pounding into her from behind, telling her that she is just a slut.

    4. Yabai! Fukushuu Yami Site

Before long he even lowers her down to make her clean off her dick before flipping her over to finger her ass.

    3. Kutsujoku

Idol Kyousei Sousa is another sadistic anime on the list written by Crimson. The story revolves around an idol who gets a new manager. The manager, of course, is a little bit more than creepy and quickly takes advantage of the young girl. The sex starts when the manager enters the girl’s room alone and takes out his phone. As it turns out, he can control a woman just by bringing up his camera and placing his finger on various parts of her body. After teasing her using his special app for a bit, he then moves on to actually touch the idol starting with her huge tits. [ad_top2 class="mt40 mb40"]

    Story

Back in 2012, Atelier Ayesha: The Alchemist of Dusk released starting the newest Atelier franchise, Dusk! Now in 2020, fans will be happy to hear that you can re-journey through the land of Dusk with this triple pack of games! The Atelier Dusk Trilogy Deluxe Pack contains three titles for a reduced price with some welcome enhancements. Then follow Shallie as she tries to stop the withering of Dusk using her alchemist skills. Think you’re ready to become a master alchemist? Well then we just have one thing to say to you! Welcome back to the world Atelier Dusk!

    Gameplay

Three games…one large collection piece. That is what you should expect the minute you boot up Atelier Dusk Trilogy Deluxe Pack and realize that what awaits you is hundreds of hours of gameplay. Rather than talk about each game individually—as that would take us hundreds of hours to do—we decided to break down each title so you know what you’re getting and how the entire package ends up being either worth it…or not. Get ready folks, this review will dive into Atelier Dusk Trilogy Deluxe Pack and that isn’t a small feat. Atelier Ayesha: The Alchemist of Dusk is the first entry in the Dusk trilogy and it is easily the most impressive even after 8 years. Players assume control of Ayesha Altugle who longs to find her sister Nio who has vanished. Ayesha ends up meeting several rather bizarre companions and with their help, decides to scour the land in search of Nio! While not as impressive graphically as it once was, Atelier Ayesha: The Alchemist of Dusk still looks great and plays quite well. Like the other Atelier games, Ayesha’s title is still turn based but quite liberating thanks to the assist system—where allies can help characters they are assigned too—and the ever pressing synthesis time limits that make you focus on what tasks should be focused on or skipped.
Atelier Escha & Logy: Alchemists of the Dusk Sky is the biggest change in the franchise with players choosing between two alchemists that play quite differently. Escha Mailer is your traditional alchemist who uses an atelier to make her recipes while male lead Logix Fiscario is more modern and thus can’t use an atelier. The two alchemists must gain resources to build a powerful airship capable of flying to a usually unreachable location as well as help their town deal with various problems. While Escha’s gameplay is more akin to the original titles, Logy focuses more on combat/story. In our opinions, Atelier Escha & Logy: Alchemists of the Dusk Sky is the best of the bunch with the dual protagonist concept that makes replaying a must for fans! The last entry in the Atelier Dusk Trilogy Deluxe Pack comes in the form of Atelier Shallie: Alchemists of the Dusk Sea. Like the previous game, players can choose between two characters—Shallistera and Shallotte Elminus—but unlike before their gameplay doesn’t change much. What does change is the mass amount of story you can get from both characters as they scour the world together trying to restore life to the now dying Dusk. In terms of gameplay, Atelier Shallie: Alchemists of the Dusk Sea is the biggest departure with no fixed time limit for item creation and a feel more akin to Persona games. Combat still remains the same and there are still tons of endings to obtain making this a pretty lengthy title. Now as a whole all three games included in the Atelier Dusk Trilogy Deluxe Pack are pretty amazing RPGs. Combat plays the same in almost each game but that isn’t a bad thing. The Atelier series has always had excellent turn based combat that makes players use their characters smartly and efficiently. Exploration also is quite fun regardless of the entry as exploring the land of Dusk in different settings never gets old. Playing through each game allows you to see how they interlock with one another and even how characters old and new have influenced the world as a whole!
The only issue with playing all three Atelier Dusk Trilogy Deluxe Pack titles back to back is the feeling of déjà vu. Each title feels basically like the last and while gameplay formats improve overtime—there’s a big difference in the latter two games—the entire package feels quite familiar. You will really want to play each game apart from one another to avoid getting Atelier burnout like we almost did. Lastly, one element that makes this collection so perfect is the sheer amount of content! Each game is given the entirety of the DLCs to be found meaning you’re getting tons of outfits, characters and extra story per game. Add to this updated speed up systems that allow you to navigate through battles/exploration faster and you have what feels like a truly upgraded triple package! We truly advise getting Atelier Dusk Trilogy Deluxe Pack together as all three games alone can cost you $120!
    [ad_middle class="mt40 mb40"]

    Honey's Gameplay Consensus:

Atelier Dusk Trilogy Deluxe Pack is basically getting three games for the price of two and in our minds, it is very worth it. Each game has been enhanced for richer flowing exploration/combat and each title includes all the DLC which is a nice touch! While each game has its own minor problems, the Atelier Dusk Trilogy was one of our favorite parts of the franchise and we doubt many would disagree. Yes, it might be hard to pay upfront $89.99 but if you want three incredibly long—but well done—games then you know this price of admission is well worth it.

    Honey's Pros:

    • Three games for an extremely reduced price
    • Each game has all of the DLC released which means you get a slew of content per game
    • The updated speed up functions included in each title is handy to avoid slower paced elements
    • Three wonderful stories that truly feel linked together

    Honey's Cons:

    • Might be a bit hard to pony up $89.99 in one sitting for some
    • Each game can feel a bit familiar if you try to play them all back to back

    Honey's Final Verdict:

The Atelier series has always had a special place in our hearts here at Honey’s Anime and the Dusk trilogy has definitely been one of our favorite parts of this amazing franchise. Playing through each one again with updated visuals and gameplay systems felt fun and exciting but did feel a bit tiring when playing all of them back to back. Needless to say, this combo pack is best played with some downtime in between but getting the complete Dusk trilogy for $89.99 is a steal. What was—or is—your favorite Atelier game? Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore - Launch Trailer - Nintendo Switch

    Who it Caters to

When it comes to RPGs no company is as consistent and shines as bright as ATLUS, who continue to strive for excellence every step of the way. Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore is the latest title from the revered company which originally launched back on the Nintendo Wii U in 2016, but has now been revamped with a ton of additional features for the Nintendo Switch. Anyone who dabbled with the original will know that Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE was a genuinely fun title, filled with challenging missions and tough dungeons that required a great deal of strategy in order to win. In Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore all of that fun is still retained but throws in extra dungeons, costumes and characters to ensure that everyone can enjoy this strategically enticing title.

    What to Expect

Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore brings both the Fire Emblem and beloved Shin Megami Tensei series together to create a unique blend of depth, strategy, and a captivating story that keeps you glued to your seat for hours. With a sophisticated turn-based battle system, that’s reminiscent of the classic Shin Megami Tensei titles, and the brutal difficulty that awaits you in battles similar to Fire Emblem, Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore is a gift within itself and is a must-have title for anyone who’s a fan of both franchises. All of the paid DLC that was included in the original Wii U version is now a part of this wonderful package, which as mentioned before includes new dungeons, along with new battle elements, additional character stories which include an EX story that focuses on Tsubasa alongside Kiria, plus a new music video. Now that you know what to expect let’s dive deeper into what makes Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore a worthy purchase and why players new to both franchises shouldn’t sleep on this incredibly robust RPG experience.
    [ad_top2 class="mt40 mb40"]

    Story

Much of Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore and its story take place between present-day Tokyo and the mysterious Idolaspheres—an area filled with dangerous enemies known as Mirages. Everyone within this world is known to have energy known as Performa, which enables them to pursue their dreams. This Performa is known to attract Mirages who typically form alliances with humans to protect the world, but recently a darker force has emerged from the shadows to devour Persona at will. It is now up to Itsuki Aoi along with his friends Tsubasa Oribe, Touma Akagi, and the rest of the Fortuna Entertainment team to work together to use their Performa to put an end to the suffering before it’s too late.

    Visuals

One of the defining aspects of both the Fire Emblem series along with the Shin Megami Tensei titles stems directly from their presentation. The moment you dive into the world of Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore you’re immersed in a world that closely resembles that of Shibuya and Harajuku, with attention to detail being at the forefront of it all. The Tokyo backdrop may not resonate so well with those who are living outside of Japan, but in our case, seeing Shibuya so accurately depicted even down to the Hachiko Crossing and department stores is mesmerizing. The menus within the game are very easy to navigate thanks to the simple approach ATLUS took to ensuring that more of the focus be placed on gameplay and keeping things to a minimum to avoid confusion. Animated cutscenes feel like you’re watching an actual anime episode which blew us away completely, and only proves just how much time and devotion ATLUS put into creating a visually captivating title. Every performance that you experience feels unique and really helps to define each character in their own way, breathing more life into the game.

    Sound/Music

The sound and music department is no different, as Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore strives to ensure that players are immersed in a world that feels real, even making sure that store employees greet you with the typical “Irrashaimase~” once you enter. The most important point to bring up though goes back to the performances that each character displays during battle. The Performa that you have is like your own personal talent and each character wields unique abilities that can be showcased in battle. Tsubasa Oribe, for example, strives to become the best idol and during many of her cutscenes, everything is so fine-tuned to perfection when she performs, creating a sense of connectivity between the player and the emotion. With music industry powerhouse Aven Group being the one behind creating the musical numbers, it’s no surprise why this game blew us away.

    Gameplay

Admittedly, jumping into the battle system of Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore felt a bit confusing at first, primarily due to the specific naming of things. To clarify, there’s a Unity System within the game that allows players to take advantage of their Performa and work alongside other Mirages to strengthen the party. When players enter the Bloom Palace, they’ll be able to level up their Carnage Unity and Radiant Unity. Carnage Unity uses Performa, which is typically collected during and after battles using special performance techniques, to create special weapons for each character. Each of these acquired weapons contains 4 skill slots that a party member can obtain through earning EXP throughout battles. Command Skills grant the member the ability to perform a plethora of attacks and spells, Passive Skills aiding in boosting stats alongside effects, and Session Skills are pretty much your chain meter where chaining together Session Attacks will boost overall damage, and grant more rewards. Radiant Unity are a lot like permanent skills that you’ll earn over time, either through plot progression and taking part in character side stories, or by increasing your Star Ranking in battle. Star Rankings are usually obtained by performing Session Skills, with Session Attacks granting more over time. Similar to the Shin Megami Tensei series, Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore’s battles take place in dungeons, where players must navigate through each floor and encounter power enemies along the way. Each Idolosphere you enter is designed around a specific theme and players must activate switches, and devices to solve puzzles in order to progress through. One of the reasons why we love the Shin Megami Tensei series is because of its enormous depth and strategy when it comes to battles, knowing when it’s best to engage or simply avoid enemies in order to save your resources for when it matters. Just like in both Fire Emblem and Shin Megami Tensei, enemies along with the characters have their strengths and weaknesses against certain types of physical attacks, alongside elemental attacks. Each character and enemy will have a small image next to their name which helps players to determine what their typing is, and how to take advantage of it in battle. The affinities of each party member will change, depending on what weapon they’re currently using in battle, so it becomes a very important strategy to be able to utilize all weapons for the right scenario. Diving deeper with Session Attacks, think of it as a combo system where a succession of attacks allows you to deal a ton of damage to the opposing side. So let’s say that we have a wind-type weapon equipped and perform a Session Attack. What will happen is if one of our other party members also has a wind-based attack and perhaps another element attacked like electricity, that attack will likely be the next follow up. With enough SP meter built up, players can then perform a very powerful performance known as Duo Attacks, in which the member and their Mirage attack in unison to deal an enormous amount of damage. Performing well in battles will reward you with an increased ‘Stage Level’ which helps to unlock Performa for Radiant Skills, plus giving you the chance to embark on new character side stories.
    [ad_middle class="mt40 mb40"]

    Honey's Gameplay Consensus:

This is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to actual gameplay, and much of Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore requires that you do a lot of planning before entering dungeons to battle. Once you receive a game over it’s back to the title screen and so, if you have a habit of not saving throughout your run then this game will surely teach you the hard way. One of the more defining features of any Shin Megami Tensei game is its ability to really test your patience and throw you off guard during very serious battles. So it’s highly encouraged that you save frequently throughout your adventure to ensure you don’t rip your hair out along the way. We totally loved Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore and for many reasons that we’ve elaborated above. The rewarding battle system is a bit confusing at first but once you develop a good understanding of things the game truly is exciting. The side stories are a nice refresher after long and arduous battles, with much the game overall really embracing Japanese culture to the fullest. By this we mean focusing on the concept of stardom and helping players empathize with the characters, showing them the struggles and obstacles that many entertainers must endure not only on stage but in their daily lives. Another added cultural tidbit is how ATLUS used the infusion of Japanese pop idol culture and performing arts to emphasize the depth of Japanese Shamanism, in which priestesses would perform in order to be closer to the gods they deeply worshiped. In a similar fashion, the main characters draw the attention of the Mirages and summon them into the real world in order to be of assistance. It’s these finer details that truly make Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore an incredibly breathtaking experience. Sure, not everyone may understand some of the nuances that are shown throughout the game but we still feel players can immerse themselves in a world that feels aesthetically pleasing from a visual standpoint.

    Honey's Pros:

    • Using cultural references to really help emphasize the importance of life and its challenges is truly a beautiful thing that ATLUS does so well.
    • The animated cutscenes in the game are some of the best we’ve seen in a long time, with the Switch really revamping the visuals in a big way.
    • Each character in the game feels authentic and you come to build a strong relationship with them along the way, which is a plus.
    • Plenty of gameplay means a lot of hours invested in this highly tactical title.

    Honey's Cons:

    • Perhaps a double-edged sword, a lot of the cultural nuances in the game reflect that of Japan and so players who dive into the story may find themselves lost in translation at times.
    • We wish there were a lot more Fire Emblem characters :(

    Honey's Final Verdict:

Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore is a must-have for any RPG enthusiast and we highly encourage new players to pick this one up and play. With all of the additional features added, this is a huge step up from the Wii U version so be sure to jump straight into the music world and perform with all of your heart! Be sure to check out our other reviews and as always, feel free to leave a comment in the comments section. Until next time!
