    CGI Anime is Massively Underrated

At the time of writing, BEASTARS and High Score Girl's second series are the second and fourth highest-rated shows of the Fall 2019 anime season respectively according to user ratings on My Anime List. And they deserve it, too. One is a brilliant psychological fantasy with intriguing characters that holds up a mirror to just about every facet of human society with its animal cast and the other is among the rare romcoms to actually be romantic and comedic while recreating its 90s Japanese arcade boom backdrop with refreshing accuracy. However, in terms of number of viewers, they are curiously the ninth and twenty-fifth respectively. What could cause such a massive discrepancy in these shows’ viewership? Could it be because they’re licensed by Netflix, which famously alienates a portion of the simulcast audience by only streaming their anime after they finish airing domestically? It might play a part, but Violet Evergarden, Little Witch Academia and plenty of other greats were released the same way and received much more consistent attention. What makes those shows different than Beastars and High Score Girl? Well if you're familiar with otaku discourse (or just read the title) you probably know that the answer is the newer shows' visuals, which exclusively use computer-generated animation. Beastars and HSG’s dearth of popularity is only the most recent example of the disrespect the otaku community holds for CG and we’re here to highlight why that is, why it’s wrong and why this attitude needs to change.

    The Hate

In all fairness, there is a historical precedent that could justify audience apprehension towards CG anime. Its proliferation in the medium began in the early 80s before the technology had progressed to the point where renders could look convincing and spent the rest of the twentieth century being generally only used as an alternative measure for assets in traditional anime that would be difficult to animate by hand. Many of you reading this probably remember reading all about people's disappointment on forums, subreddits, and message boards whenever CG assets reared their head on TV. They were dismissed as being lazy low-quality shortcuts. And while they certainly were at many points, that generalization is completely unfair. 3D animation stands apart from 2D as an individual artistic medium in its own right with its own strengths and weaknesses. Furthermore, CG integration in film has progressed incredibly quickly and its contributions to anime have been just as consistent as its failures. The likes of Ghost in the Shell, Cowboy Bebop, and Summer Wars are widely agreed to be among the best the medium has to offer, and they all make regular use of 3D. While awful misuses of the technique are still around today, to reject anything that makes uses of its unique toolset is completely unfair and (given the recent growth of CGI anime) while make you miss out on some of the greatest stories to come from Japan today.

    CGIntellectuals

CGI series and films have been popping up from just about everywhere, but only a few studios use the style consistently. And by looking at their output, we can realize not only the high quality the method can yield but also the endless variety of creative uses that smart animators can wring from it, which rival even that of traditional anime. The most recent CGI success story comes from studio Larx Entertainment, who went from no-names to overnight sensation with only their third project: An adaptation of Yabako Sandrovich and Daromeon’s sensational manga Kengan Ashura. Though it remains their only fully CG show so far, its 2 seasons have been met with more than enough success to leave fans wondering what they’ll do next. Granted, many abhorred the show’s visuals for their awkward movements and the fact that Larx’s decision to artificially limit the framerate to emulate normal film stock was incredibly out of place for the medium. Nevertheless, Kengan Ashura's rare ability to render numerous highly detailed character models at once coupled with its undeniable ability to tell a compelling story through the often-dismissed art form makes Larx’s work entirely worth your attention. Polygon Pictures is the oldest name in the not-very-old game, having established itself in 1983 and worked on animated ads most of its life before breaking into TV anime with hits like Knights of Sidonia, Ajin and Sanzoku no Musume Ronja before expanding into film with Blame!, Human Lost and its Godzilla trilogy. They can not only put out work that’s better than traditional anime, but they can do it fast, having crafted 20 different notable titles since throwing themselves into the anime ring a mere 5 years ago. Though they share Larx’s problem of awkwardly limited framerates while having a few issues uniquely their own like a chronic case of same-face syndrome. But what their presentation lacks in distinctive modeling, it more than makes up for with consistently high visual fidelity and brilliant use of 3D camera movement. Lesser CGI anime sometimes degrade action scenes into badly-coordinated unfollowable messes by abusing the freedom the medium allows through unintelligent camera movements that only serve to distract and disorient. Polygon Pictures, on the other hand, has mastered this technique and only uses it to complement the action, presenting complex sequences in unbroken motions and highlighting its points of interest in a way that always keeps the intensity high. The last stop on the CGI anime hype-train is SANZIGEN, who is generally thought of as an exclusively 3D animation producer, but actually blends hefty amounts of both hand-drawn and computer-generated assets to make its shows. We can hear the collective groan from those of you reading this thinking about all the times you've seen that blend work like oil and water, but SANZIGEN makes it more seamless than just about any other TV anime thanks to state-of-the-art bitmap animation software that allows for convincing layering and an equally impressive roster of skilled artists who know how to make it work. It's probably because SANZIGEN works with hand-drawn animation so much that their shows tend to adopt the most visually striking elements of traditional anime, namely instantly memorable character designs, strong key-poses, and expressive shot-composition. Their only real problem is that their undeniable talent for illustration is rarely matched by their storytelling. They can really shine when adapting interesting narratives as seen in their Initial D films, but their originals like Bubuki Buranki and ID-0 tend to fall into the awkward status of matching powerful images with a weak plot. It’s a frustrating shortcoming, but it doesn’t stop them from being yet another example of how great CGI anime can be.

    Final Thoughts

    [sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="IMDB" url="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt8963328/mediaviewer/rm1729130752" ]

And those are only the anime studios primarily focused on animating in 3D. Plenty of great studios known for their hand-drawn shows have been releasing CGI anime that are just as great. Orange’s Houseki no Kuni, Shin-Ei Animation’s Stand by Me Doraemon and Toei’s Captain Harlock film are all wonderful displays of animation masterclass that viewers will have to deprive themselves of if they chose to reject fully-CGI shows, so we encourage everyone to give them a shot. We also encourage everyone to leave a comment letting us know what they think of 3D anime and what their favorite and least favorite titles in the medium are, as well as staying on Honey’s Anime as we continue to cover the progression of this wonderful computer-generated art form.

    Discussion Time

Chapter 257 of Boku no Hero Academia almost feels at first like an overly simplified entry in the series. All-Might has gained knowledge of previous users of One For All and we learn that they all indeed had their own powers in conjunction with One For All. Deku has access to various new powers—like BlackWhip used by Daigoro—but can only harness it for a brief second. What makes this knowledge so intriguing is that all users of One For All weren’t blessed with powerful Quirks but with this legendary added Quirk seemed to be able to become considerably stronger. Even All-Might’s master had a simple ability called Float but we know she was considerably stronger and that must mean One For All enhances Quirks and gives the user access to previous users’ abilities as well! Deku will need to train considerably if he wishes to obtain this level of mastery but we know he’s no slouch for trying his hardest. After our history lesson, Deku joins the other UA students for a nice dinner and everything seems to be going well. All-Might meets Eraser Head outside the campus where we learn Eri will be trained soon and All-Might is ready to help out. All-Might is ready to continue living and he wishes to help his students succeed where he once reigned supreme. Unfortunately, our chapter doesn’t end on a good note, hence our title. In March, we see a curious doctor walking the beat of a hospital and then learn that heroes around the city have begun to vanish! Is this hero disappearing act happening due to Tomura’s re-birth? We can’t wait to find out but for now, here are some reasons why you need to read chapter 257 as soon as possible!

Why You Should Read Boku no Hero Academia (My Hero Academia) Chapter 257
    [sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="viz" url="https://www.viz.com/read/manga/my-hero-academia-volume-16/product/5756" ]

    1. Simple Power For Impressive Heroes

We still don’t know a lot about One For All but we are beginning to piece together what this power can do. As evident by Deku’s new abilities—and those of the previous users—One For All acts as a secondary special Quirk that allows the hero to tap into the past users. While the heroes of the past weren’t that amazing with the individual Quirks, with One For All, their power was enhanced tenfold!

    2. Missing Heroes!?

Chapter 257’s ending is easily the biggest cliffhanger of recent Boku no Hero Academia chapters. We learn that in March heroes have begun to vanish! We have some theories as to why they are missing but we will have to wait for future chapters to confirm our suspicions.

    Final Thoughts

Boku no Hero Academia 257 at first seemed like it would be just another brief history lesson for One For All but it turned out to be a big eye-opener! Not only do we know past users had other Quirks aside from One For All but their powers were extremely simple prior to them gaining this secondary Quirk! However, the biggest surprise of the chapter is definitely the ending and now we have to wonder…who is missing? What do you think will happen in the next chapter of Boku no Hero Academia? Comment below to let us know and keep stuck to our hive for even more chapter reviews—as well as other series—done by us here at Honey’s Anime!

[Honey’s Anime Interview] JAM Project at Lantis Matsuri 2019 at AnimeNYC

JAM Project was formed in 2000, and currently is composed by five vocal artists who are veterans in the anime and tokusatsu music industry; they are: Hironobu Kageyama, Masaaki Endoh, Hiroshi Kitadani, Masami Okui, and Yoshiki Fukuyama. They did the OP for One Punch Man, "THE HERO!", and the OP and ED for the GARO series including GARO: Vanishing Line. Honey-chan went to New York City to attend to Lantis Matsuri 2019 at AnimeNYC where she got to meet JAM Project's members one day before their show.

    Honey-Chan
    Interview with JAM Project
    [gray-hex-decoration]
Please tell us how you feel ahead of the New York performance on November 15?
Masaaki Endoh: Personally, I’m excited because this is my first time in New York. Sure, there are lots of amazing places in the United States, but New York is the most famous, and it’s the place you always see on TV, so I’m looking forward to it.What will it be like singing anime songs in the heart of America? I'm psyched to find out!
Masami Okui: This is also my first time in New York. Although I’ve been to Canada before. America’s a big place, so I’m guessing the atmosphere is different in each area, but my image of New York is one of sophistication and style. We’ll be performing together with idols this time, so I guess we can expect lots of young people in the audience? I’m nervous but looking forward to it. And of course, I’ll give it my best.
Hiroshi Kitadani: I performed solo at Anisong World Matsuri in America last year, but I’m glad to be back with the JAM Project gang.
Yoshiki Fukuyama: This will be my third time in New York, but my first concert here. Wherever we go, JAM Project will sing with all our power! I’m looking forward to seeing how the American audiences react.
Hironobu Kageyama: Like Hiroshi, I participated in the Anisong World Matsuri as a solo artist last year. I finished that show with “THE HERO!!” from One Punch Man. I remember wishing that I could come again with JAM Project, and now, one year later, it looks like my wish has come true.
How did you feel when you first heard that you would be singing the opening theme song for One Punch Man?
Hironobu Kageyama: I had a funny experience with that. I go to English conversation classes a few times a month, and when I ask my teachers, “Why did you come to Japan?” Many of them mention anime as one of their reasons. So, I was discussing music and movies with this one teacher named Nick, and he told me, “There’s a manga that’s really popular right now. It’s badly drawn but really funny!” Of course, he was talking about the original One Punch Man comics. So, when the offer for the opening theme song came, I remember thinking, “Ah! That one!”
Masaaki Endoh: One Punch Man has a really interesting story. It’s the simple animes that usually take off overseas, but at the end of the day, nobody can predict what will sell, and we didn’t know if our music would be a good fit, so it was a miracle that it all worked out. I’m really grateful. The music video was recorded in San Francisco, and I remember it being really cold. In the beginning, I’d never heard of One Punch Man. They told me it was a major title, but when they said, “One-Pan-Man,” I thought they were talking about Anpanman!
Hiroshi Kitadani: I’d heard of One Punch Man. I distinctly remember Saitama’s face being posted all over the place at a Japanese convention. Lots of people from around the world have watched our music video on YouTube. The viewers from overseas are larger than viewers from Japan, actually. The JAM Project 20th Anniversary Box that we’re going to release in January 2020 will also contain a Portuguese version by Ricardo’s band.
You guys have performed all over the world. Do American fans differ from fans in other countries?
Masaaki Endoh: This is just a personal impression, but I think Americans judge rock music quite strictly, so I’m a little nervous.
Masami Okui: South American fans seem to have a good time at concerts regardless of which songs you sing. It’s almost carnival-like. In Asia, the fans sing along from beginning to end in loud voices.
Yoshiki Fukuyama: People always start cheering right at the beginning of our One Punch Man song. It’s where we get our best response. You can see that it’s a hit song and that everybody knows it. I mean, sure, the video got a lot of views online, but you don’t realize just how popular it is until you’re in front of the fans. They probably also watched the DVD. And they usually call for an encore.
JAM Project formed in 2000, so next year will be your 20th anniversary. With just under two months left of 2019, could you give us a message for the fans around the world?
Masaaki Endoh: JAM Project will be 20 next year. We’ve been to a lot of countries, but there are also a lot of countries that we haven’t been to. Even in America, there are lots of places that we haven’t visited yet. I’d love to go to all those places with JAM Project. We’ll continue doing our best in our 20th year, so please support us!
Masami Okui: I want to sing in as many countries as possible. I’d also love for our overseas fans to come see our concerts in Japan. We hope you’ll get to know JAM Project through anisongs.
Hiroshi Kitadani: We’ll always create and sing anisongs for anime. That will never change. We want our voices to reach you!
Yoshiki Fukuyama: I wish we could do a full tour of America, even just once.
Hironobu Kageyama: I can’t believe that a unit I helped found when I was 40 lasted for 20 years. We’ve come a long way. I always wanted us to go the distance, but I didn’t think we’d actually make it. It’s all thanks to the passionate fans who cheered us on. Not only the Japanese fans but also the fans in the U.S., Latin America, Asia, and the rest of the world. All the fans share these feelings, and I want to have a great time with everyone!.

We at Honey’s Anime, want to extend our warmest thanks to the talented members of JAM Project for sharing their thoughts with us. After this interview we were eager to see their performance the next day.

A Look Back at Anime's Biggest Trends of the Past Decade

    [sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="SVWC-70271" text="" url="" ]

Every time one decade gives way to another, mass speculation on what defined the past years’ cultural identity is sure to follow. Call us bandwagon jumpers if you must, but our memories can’t help but look back on the 10s’ otaku media with a nuanced blend of nostalgia and cynicism. So we present you (in no particular order) with a list of the best and worst things we will remember these past 10 years of anime for.

    A Lot of Freakin Anime

Japan's animation industry has been expanding ridiculously quickly over the last couple of years and that means that we've been getting more anime being made each season than ever before. Better yet, it’s opened the floodgates for way more auteur anime with creative esoteric styles that probably would have been passed up in an under-saturated animator job market. If you’re a fan of the trappings of Masaaki Yuasa, Naoki Tate or the Yoshinari brothers or if you just like having a ton of options for new anime to watch, this decade has been very kind to you.

    Too Much Freakin Anime

Japan's animation industry has been expanding ridiculously quickly over the last couple of years and that means that we've been getting more anime made each season than ever before. More anime than we've had ideas for, and this has resulted in countless studios churning out unoriginal rushed cash-ins on other popular shows faster than we can even keep up with. If you're sick of seeing Sword Art Online or A Certain Magical Index rehashed with poor plots and messy visuals, this decade has not been very kind to you.

    Digital Effects in Animation

Yes, it existed before, but only in the 2010s did Japanese animators really start mastering the art of computer-enhanced animation. UFOTable raised the bar forever with 2011’s Fate/Zero which used digital effects work to pile even more visual depth onto its already above-par hand-drawn animation, and the studio has only continued to push the envelope since, along with other heavyweights like Kyoto Animation, Bones, Madhouse, P.A. Works and Studio Wit. It’s no exaggeration to say that this evolution in digital animation tools has been the most positive innovation on anime’s visuals throughout the decade.

    Bad Digital Effects in Animation

Adding computerized tools to your animation team's arsenal can open up a whole new world of possibilities in the right hands, but it can also lead to ugly corner-cutting and confusing visual dumpster fires in the wrong ones. With the proliferation of digital animation software, far too many animators have used these enhancements to abuse digital flashiness in a vain attempt to cover up their unpolished animation, or just abused them with no thought paid to direction or composition. And don't even get us started on how many studios still can't figure out how to do computer-generated animation competently.

    The Rise of Simulcasting

It's crazy to think just how recently the Western-otaku dark ages ended. Where we once had to cross our fingers and pray that whatever anime we wanted to watch would get fansubbed if we didn't want to wait over a year for a licensee to localize it (assuming the latter would ever happen at all) services like Crunchyroll, Funimation, and Hi-Dive not only license and subtitle almost every show to come out of Japan but do it so fast that domestic broadcasts and streaming uploads are often only separated by an hour or so. And that’s without even talking about the magic that is simuldubbing, where anime dubs tail their Japanese counterparts by a matter of days. We’ve had the fortune of witnessing the biggest leap in experiencing anime in a time frame nearer to our Eastern brethren that we will likely ever see within our lifetimes.

    Bad Simulcasting

The previously mentioned streaming platforms may not be perfect, but we don’t feel the least bit conflicted in saying that they were an unquestionable net positive on the fandom. Netflix and Anime Strike, though? We’ll have to think about that one. Sure, the licenses that landed in their laps may not have been caught by the others and Netflix even funded some of the decade's best shows like Devilman Crybaby, but if you wanted to see your simulcasts to be cast—you know—simultaneously, then it sucked to be you because you weren't getting their shows until they had completed their Japanese airings, been fully subbed, and in some cases, dubbed for good measure. Worse yet, these guys rarely, if ever, let their properties get physical releases here despite the practice causing no apparent detriment to any of their competitors. And did we mention that you had to have to pay for an Amazon Prime account to even be allowed to spend the $5 monthly fee for Anime Strike? If you weren’t planning on ordering items or watching their live-action shows you were paying $18 a month just to stream what was a pretty sparse library of anime. This is one business model we’d be happy to leave in the past.

So, there are our musings on how the last 10 years treated our favorite pastime. Did you think we had a good decade for anime? What were the trends you’d be sad to see leave in the ‘20s? Are there any you’ll be glad to be left without? Whatever the case, leave us a comment with your thoughts and we look forward to seeing what the next 10 years have in store for otakudom.

    Best Anime OP of 2019

Looking back now, 2019 was another great year for anime with an almost overwhelming number of titles, plenty of which have the potential to become modern classics. Along with these series, we obviously also got a myriad of opening sequences. Today we’ll be covering our top favorite OPs of last year, taking all aspects into consideration from art direction, originality, connection to the anime, and general quality of the music. Obviously this isn’t a scientific process but we hope you enjoy our picks regardless! We’ll also be including the OP videos when possible, let’s start!

    [ad_top2 class="mt40 mb40"]
    [ad_middle class="mb40"]

    5. Yakusoku no Neverland (The Promised Neverland) - “Touch Off”

    [en][information_general item1 = "Episodes" content1="12" item2="Aired" content2="January 2019 –March 2019" post_id=""][/en]
    [es][information_general item1 = "Episodios" content1="___content1___" item2="Emisión" content2="___content2___" post_id=""][/es]

A new blockbuster Shonen Jump series, Yakusoku no Neverland’s anime adaptation has a captivating blend of psychological thriller with horror and sci-fi that made it one of the most popular shows of last year. Some part of that should definitely be credited to its opening “Touch off” with excudes hype, mystery, and one of the most powerful saxophone riffs in all of anime! We also thought some of the use of symbolism was clever, particularly the recurring red thread of fate that is later revealed as a burning fuse which further connects to the openings’ use of fire and light. Other standout moments include the first-person section in the beginning and the blooming flower which, like much of the other symbolism, is well done in how it connects in retrospect without spoiling the story. UVERworld’s track is also fits perfectly with a masterful sense of rhythm and buildup that keeps everything moving.

    4. Carole & Tuesday - “Kiss Me”

    [en][information_general item1 = "Episodes" content1="24" item2="Aired" content2="April 2019 – October 2019" post_id=""][/en]
    [es][information_general item1 = "Episodios" content1="___content1___" item2="Emisión" content2="___content2___" post_id=""][/es]

Shinichiro Watanabe’s latest anime series, Carole & Tuesday doubled down on his trademark incorporation of music into the theming of his anime with an inspiring tale of the titular musicians’ rise in a world dominated by manufactured pop music literally produced by artificial intelligence. As such, a great deal of care was put into this opening and we think it paid off! It’s hard to say what stands out first in “Kiss Me” from its smooth R&B-style English vocals from the talented Nai Br.XX and Celeina Ann to its beautiful painterly visuals but it all comes together wonderfully. There’s a strong sense of movement throughout, with great attention to detail in the editing to match the progression of the music along with an overall style that feels very modern in the way it combines ‘Eastern’ and ‘Western’ sensibilities to great effect and is one of our most memorable openings of 2019!

    3. BEASTARS - “Wild Side”

    [en][information_general item1 = "Episodes" content1="12" item2="Aired" content2="October 2019 – December 2019" post_id=""][/en]
    [es][information_general item1 = "Episodios" content1="___content1___" item2="Emisión" content2="___content2___" post_id=""][/es]

In terms of unusual visual styles, “Wild Side” stands out immediately with its almost entirely stop-motion animated opening made using some really impressive models that match the anime’s character designs and expressions very well. This approach was also fitting as it tied into the series’ theatrical theming with clear thought put into the stage design and lighting. The dance scene, in particular, feels very theatrical and, of course, flowed well with the distinctly jazzy, big band style accompaniment that ties the whole thing together. The shocking reveal at the end leaves a big impression and drives home the predatory tension that pervades the series with another highlight being the ‘antler forest’ (presumably Louis’) from earlier in the OP. In short, “Wild Side” is a visually and sonically unique opening that captures its series well.

    2. Joshikousei no Mudazukai (Wasteful Days of High School Girl) - “Wa! Moon! Dass! cry!”

    [en][information_general item1 = "Episodes" content1="12" item2="Aired" content2="July 2019 – September 2019" post_id=""][/en]
    [es][information_general item1 = "Episodios" content1="___content1___" item2="Emisión" content2="___content2___" post_id=""][/es]

Joshikousei no Mudazukai was probably one of the most underrated series of 2019 and definitely a strong contender for the best comedy anime of last year. It also happened to have one of our favorite openings in the appropriately non sequitur “Wa! Moon! Dass! Cry!”. Not only does this OP nail the mood of the show perfectly (with bonus points for in-character vocals from the main cast) but it is, perhaps somewhat surprisingly, quite creative in its ‘camera work’ in making this opening have an amateur, school project-like style with segments of ‘handheld’ shaky cam, faux stop-motion animation, and motion blur photographs which are often accompanied by hilarious photo-bombing by Nozomu "Baka" Tanaka. The music itself is quite an earworm with a very catchy and unusual offbeat style that is matched well with the visuals and comes together to make an OP that feels very genuine, playful, and amusing.

Joshikousei no Mudazukai Opening “Wa! Moon! Dass! Cry!” by Chinatsu Akasaki, Haruka Tomatsu, and Aki Toyosaki

    1. JoJo no Kimyou na Bouken Part 5: Ougon no Kaze (JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind) - “Uragirimono no Requiem”

    [en][information_general item1 = "Episodes" content1="39" item2="Aired" content2="October 2018 – July 2019" post_id=""][/en]
    [es][information_general item1 = "Episodios" content1="___content1___" item2="Emisión" content2="___content2___" post_id=""][/es]

As a series, David Production’s anime adaptations of the beloved manga have produced some of the most consistently excellent openings of any long-running series to date and Uragirimon no Requiem is no exception. With a soaring buildup at the beginning leading into a further escalated ramp up, this opening continually builds up tension with its music and expressive, flowing visuals that feel at times like flying through the pages of the manga. “Uragirimono no Requiem” also features its series’ trademark color shifting and, most impactfully, new variants of the opening that tie into story developments towards the end which continues to be absolutely amazing and is done particularly well in Part 5. General excellence, along with special touches like this and fanservice moments like Giorno’s Dio-like pose, have to push JoJo again to our favorite opening of the year!

    10. Wagaya no Liliana-san The Animation

Tatsuya is hanging with his fellow otaku friends and after they split up, something catches Tatsuya’s attention—a beautiful woman with silver hair and dark skin lying on the floor, seemingly unconscious. This extremely exotic beautify is Liliana and she’s from a fantasy realm we pretty much don’t know about. Actually, we don’t know much about Liliana regarding who she really is, what her full name is, or what race she is. Tatsuya, however, doesn’t bother asking these questions because he likes Liliana and that’s all he cares about. Wagaya no Liliana-sama The Animation is very simple and you can consider this a bad hentai anime adaptation because the story doesn’t tell you anything apart from Liliana being a dark-skinned girl from an unspecified magical realm that randomly teleports to the human realm for an unspecified reason. In fact, the story is so stripped down that you can swap out Liliana with a different girl and the story would remain the same. That is not to say Wagaya no Liliana-sama The Animation is bad at everything else—its vanilla romance story about a young man living together with a beautiful dark-skinned girl and the two eventually falling in love is nice. But don’t let the term “vanilla” fool you because Wagaya no Liliana-sama The Animation is animated by studio Seven, so you’ll get some great sex scenes that are not vanilla by standard.

    9. Love x Holic: Miwaku no Otome to Hakudaku Kankei The Animation

    [sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="DMM" url="https://www.dmm.co.jp/mono/anime/-/detail/=/cid=403jdxa57553/?i3_ref=search&i3_ord=1" ]

Amano Taichi is a very determined high school student and he aims high by looking for a demi-girl girlfriend. Taichi is having trouble because every girl dislikes him for some reason. Tough luck there, buddy. Not all is hopeless though, Taichi trips and locks lips with Aoe Kuon, the most popular girl in school! Romance cliches! But it wasn’t love at first sight because the two cut their lips during the encounter and Taichi gets sick and is bedridden for a week. Taichi resumes attending school after he fully recovers and then he notices something strange—all of the demi-girls are fawning over him. It turns out the demi blood of Kuon has mixed with Taichi’s blood and his body is emitting a scent with an aphrodisiac effect that makes every demi-girl in his vicinity extremely horny. Hentai romance cliches! The foursome scene in episode 2 is still a letdown, but that doesn’t overall ruin the show. The story is lacking in Love x Holic, but the girls are very attractive, the overall art style is beautiful, the hero is decent-looking, and the sex scenes are top-notch, all thanks to veteran hentai anime studio Seven. Oh and don’t forget about the demi-girls!

    8. Aibeya The Animation

Kouta’s mother has, out of the blue, decided to renovate the entire house and Kouta is forced to stay at his childhood friend Aki’s home next door. Kouta and Aki are friends for a long time, but as they grow older, their feelings for each other grow and all they need is a gentle push to kickstart their relationship. And apparently, forcing Kouta to sleep in Aki’s room for the foreseeable future is the most gentle push. Way to go, parents. We mentioned in our January 2019 list that we need more story-driven vanilla hentai anime experiences because they break the monotony that involves the usual laundry list of tropes like rape, mind control, drugs, etc., and, well, Japan sort-of-kind-of listened and 2019 gave us some very well-made vanilla hentai anime. Aibeya The Animation is one of few very high-quality hentai anime with a good story, proper pacing, top-notch sex scenes and characters you can’t help but cheer on. There are no fat, faceless, and perverted main characters, nor single-minded, drug-induced sluts here!

Thankfully, Shiori has been living by herself for the past 3 years and she offers her help to teach and prepare Nozomu for an independent life. So what’s Shiori’s plan? Simple: invite Nozomu to live together in her apartment. Aikagi The Animation is similar to Wagaya no Liliana-san The Animation and Aibeya The Animation—they’re all stories about two people living together and finding love. But unlike Wagaya no Liliana-sama The Animation, Aikagi The Animation has a complete story with decent character development, and unlike Aibeya The Animation, Aikagi The Animation has a more happy-couple-living-happily love story. As for the sex, well, they’re completely vanilla but they’re nicely thought out. You won’t be cumming by the bucket-full, but Aikagi The Animation will give you a warm, nice feeling in your loveless heart.

Shoujo Kyouiku RE is a collection of 2 short stories (so far) about girls making out with older guys. Episode 1 tells the story of Inagaki Sae gathering all her courage to confess her feelings to her teacher. Episode 2 tells the story of Shiraishi Nana, a very feisty girl who is desperate to get fucked hard by her brother. Problem is, her brother refuses to have sex with Nana because, well, you know, they’re blood-related siblings and such. This is just a minor setback and Nana never plans on giving up. Yeah, we get you, Shoujo Kyouiku RE is a remake, but we still think Shoujo Kyouiku RE is different enough to be its own series. We still think the 2019 remake is inferior to the original due to the lack of story and a sizeable cast of lolis, but when it comes to pure loli hentai in 2019, Shoujo Kyouiku RE is top in its class. And let’s not forget the studio behind the fantastic loli hentai Shoujo Ramune also did Shoujo Kyouiku RE. You literally can’t go wrong with this hentai anime title!

Story 1: Class Rep Akane confiscates a hentai manga from her classmate Okazaki. On the next day, Akane spots another hentai manga on the way to school and it promptly gets “taken care of.” Akane takes a few pages of the hentai manga out of curiosity and, well, her curiosity gets the best of her because Akane starts experimenting with her body after looking at some very lewd pages. Story 2: Hana is amazed after learning about the human reproductive system and wants to learn more. Instead of asking the teacher, Hana invites her childhood friend Kenta to help her sate her curiosity of the human body. One of the best things about vanilla hentai is that they tell interesting romantic stories as to why the two get together in semi-realistic scenarios. Shishunki Sex contains two stories of adolescents experimenting with their maturing bodies and experiencing sex for the first time. Unfortunately, the hentai anime adaptation, so far, only covers two chapters from the manga of the same name, but these stories are still very good with a dose of comedy and surprisingly well-animated sex scenes.

It’s summer break, and you know what that means! Go home away from the cramped dormitories and relax! Boku-kun is not the outgoing type, but hey, literally anywhere is better than staying in the dormitory where people will just drag you along for some stupid summer activities. Boku-kun made the right call because, at home, he has two beautiful sisters who are overly excited to see him. Very, extra overly excited, if you understand the subtle implication we are insinuating! It was tough to decide to pick Ecchi na Onee-chan ni Shiboraretai over Megane to Megami—both shows have incest and both are animated by studio T-Rex. Ecchi na Onee-chan ni Shiboraretai edges out because the art style is distinct, has 2x more incest than Megane no Megami, and the sex is wilder. Seriously, you can’t go wrong with a threesome incest hentai anime. Megane to Megami is still great, though; and, well, fuck it, we’ll include the show as rank 4.5! Everyone’s now happy!

    3. Saimin Seishidou The Animation

Resident perverted, sweaty, and ugly fat fuck Tanaka Hajime brainwashed everyone with his powerful hypnotic spell into believing he’s a licensed sex counselor—a person who gives sex training to every girl in school. These sex education sessions are mandatory, so all of the girls go to Hajime to get fucked all while without realizing they’ve been hypnotized. It’s a man’s dream job, to be honest. Saimin Seishidou The Animation is one of the best-looking hentai anime because not only are the animation, sex scenes, and production values high, studio T-Rex almost perfectly captured the style of the source material; it’s hard to tell the difference! Sure the coloring style is different and some scenes look a tad better in the manga, but overall, it’s impressive seeing studio T-Rex going the extra mile to capture mangaka Aiue Oka’s style. Other than that, Saimin Seishidou is a great package featuring a fat fuck hypnotizing his entire school and raping the beautiful high school girls with impunity. Yeah, Saimin Seishidou The Animation didn’t animate every manga chapter, and to be fair, Saimin Seishidou is still an ongoing series. Here’s hoping we’ll get more episodes down the line.

Shuntarou is lazy, doesn’t know the concept of taking baths, spends his time playing incest visual novels, and is hated by his 3 beautiful and ripe sisters Ayaka, Chiaki, and Fuyuno. One day, Shuntarou stumbles upon another incest visual novel he doesn’t recall ever installing in his computer. This visual novel appears to be broken and Shuntarou leaves it alone and goes to bed. When Shuntarou wakes up, he’s transformed into a young boy and his sisters suddenly find him irresistible. Hentai anime adaptations of hentai manga rarely work because of many factors like the length of the story—if the story is too long, the adaptation will either cut out a lot of scenes or rewrite the scenes so they fit in a 2-4 episode format. Seikatsu Shuukan The Animation, more specifically, the hentai anime adaptation of the “A week-long of daily sex life” chapter of Seikatsu Shuukan is a perfect example of a story that works in hentai anime form—a short, self-contained story with decently-paced sex scenes and a proper-no-hint-of-sequel ending. While the art style of studio Seven doesn’t closely match Michiking’s, the overall presentation of Seikatsu Shuukan The Animation is top-notch with studio Seven’s exaggerated sex animations that work well with the story’s focus on lustful sweaty incestuous affection between a shota and his beautiful sisters.

When he was at a young age, Enomoto Yuuji was taken in by the Tsubakihara family after his parents had passed away. Yuuji has found comfort within his new family and Yuuji has gained new siblings, twins Yuna and Nina. As the three children grow up and mature into young adults, their feelings towards each other changes and they no longer see each other as siblings. Will love bloom between Yuuji and one of the twins or will Yuuji find love elsewhere and maintain the status quo—not hurting the twins and ruin the family who took him in? Master Piece The Animation has everything: beautiful art style, beautiful characters with varying personalities and sexual needs, a very hot MILF, a wholesome romance story spanning two 30-minute episodes that doesn’t involve deception, blackmail, drugs or rape, and the animation is handled by one of the best hentai animation studios out there, studio T-Rex. Frankly speaking, the resident MILF Tsubakihara Mira steals the show because she has more screen time than both of her daughters combined. If you’re looking for some MILF goodness that isn’t cheating or NTR, then by the gods, Master Piece The Animation has got you covered… in sweat and other assorted bodily fluids once you’re done watching this—dare we say—“masterpiece” of a hentai anime!

    Final Thoughts

Phew! What a year, man. What a year! 2019 may not be the best year in the past decade, but the titles of varying genres we’ve seen made 2019 a very good year for anyone from a seasoned fan to someone who is just getting into hentai. And, well, that’s it. Let’s wave goodbye to 2019 and then look forward to new favorites and potential instant classics in 2020 and beyond. Happy-goddamned-New Year!

    Saving the World.
    • System: PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch
    • Publisher: Idea Factory
    • Developer: Compile Heart
    • Release Date: January 30, 2020

    Who it Caters to

Its 2020 and we’re in dire need of a good action-RPG! We know already there are going to be dozens of action-RPGs releasing this year—like the Final Fantasy VII Remake and Tales of Arise—but we can’t wait forever…we need a new game now. Luckily, developer Compile Heart with publisher Idea Factory hears our prayers and have delivered us Arc of Alchemist! Those who love to explore and fight hundreds of enemies might see Arc of Alchemist as a must-buy of 2020! However, we have put in some time into Arc of Alchemist and have some things to say about it. Find out more in our full review of Arc of Alchemist for the PS4!

    What to Expect

Arc of Alchemist is a deep action-RPG title where players become explorers who need to also fight to stay alive. What once was a beautiful world has now become nearly uninhabitable and it’s up to your team to gain special orbs that can possibly resurrect this dying land. You’ll need to gear up and lay the beat down on various enemies all while scouring this dangerous landscape for resources. Create your own central hub to better equip yourself for the explorations and maybe you can revive the world!
    [ad_top2 class="mt40 mb40"]

    Story

Rumor has it that the barren world Quinn Bravesford knows of was a planet filled with water and life. Humanities’ constant warring actions and an overabundance of need caused the land to wither and die. Now a world filled with machines and other strange enemies, Quinn’s mission is to unite four orbs within her Lunagear. If Quinn can accomplish this, the world possibly will be restored to its former glory! However, are these legends just rays of false hope from the past? Quinn embarks on her mission regardless to save the world and prove humanity can undo the mistakes it made long ago.

    Gameplay

Let’s be upfront right here and now readers. Arc of Alchemist isn’t a bad game. However, like many action-RPGs out there in the gaming world, Arc of Alchemist falters when it comes to the overall experience. For everyone one thing Arc of Alchemist does right, it messes up another and that does dampen the experience of what could have been a great action-RPG in 2020. You’ll understand more of what we mean as we dive deeper into the world of sand and machines! Arc of Alchemist is pretty straight forward. Players assume the role of Quinn Bravesford who wishes to save the world with her team of combat ready explorers. After the opening credits, you’re dropped into Quinn’s world and learn quickly this is no environment for the faint of heart. Quinn’s world is dangerous with deserts going for miles and machine-like beasts roaming the land. Luckily, while Quinn might seem cute and overly calm, she’s no slouch in combat!
Combat is one of the big elements of Arc of Alchemist and this is where things begin to hit high/low notes. Arc of Alchemist is no turn-based affair. At any moment your team can be hit with random enemies or baddies and you’ll need to hack and slash for dear life! Every character has an arsenal of special attacks/abilities and each character controls just a bit differently, this is a good thing for Arc of Alchemist. However, as you fight against various monsters you’ll immediately notice this isn’t a Ys game. Controls in Arc of Alchemist feel a bit sluggish and often you’ll spam the same attacks which will cause repetition to grow in extremely fast. While you control your main character, the AI takes the reigns on whoever else is in your party. Here’s some good news, Arc of Alchemist nailed the AI quite well! Players can customize what each character focuses on and their formation to really make some deep gameplay strategies and this works because your AI partners are truly helpful. You’ll need to think on your feet during combat too as bosses can quickly destroy a player who doesn’t order his team strongly.
Another two major elements in Arc of Alchemist is the base building system and exploration. Exploring the once ocean world can be often just okay. There are plenty of environments to roam around in and traps often keep you from just holding the run button in one direction. You can also interact with environments using various powers to find secret paths or hidden spots rich with loot to grab. The problem overall though is environments feel lifeless and often don’t look that great. There are only so many times a desert becomes engaging. Base building though is where we truly felt engaged in Arc of Alchemist. If you’ve ever played games like Dark Cloud or Harvest Moon, you’ll appreciate the base building system in Arc of Alchemist. Players can craft their own buildings for various necessities. As you pour more resources into your base, you’ll unlock new places to build and even gain stronger items/tools for your team of explorers! Add to this the fact that you can make your base look like a mini-city and you’ll find you can easily spend hours of time in the base building mechanics. Lastly, let’s talk about the sound/visuals. We’ve already mentioned that in terms of environments, Arc of Alchemist can be a bit weak. Thankfully, the sprites for your team and the enemies you face are well detailed and look absolutely gorgeous. The voice acting also does a great job of making characters just a tad more engaging. Equally, the music hits all the right notes whether you’re in combat, exploring or building your metropolis hub! Arc of Alchemist might not be the best looking game out there but we appreciate several rather important elements within it.
    [ad_middle class="mt40 mb40"]

    Honey's Gameplay Consensus:

Where the Ys series has perfected action-RPG mechanics, Arc of Alchemist falls just a few steps short. Customizing your base to make your own central hub and having tons of characters to choose from is amazing but combat can feel a bit sluggish and the story falls to being a bit overly simple. Just like how the art design can often look mediocre—the settings especially—the sprites for your team of fighters/explores is incredibly detailed and truly well done. Arc of Alchemist hits the right notes to be a fun game but it equally misses the right beats needed for that perfect experience like the Ys series offers. We don’t like comparing two different companies but if Compile Heart wants to make a game as amazing as Ys then they need to learn from where Arc of Alchemist fails.

    Honey's Pros:

    • Amazing sprite design
    • Deep RPG mechanics
    • Building your base is both fun and truly robust
    • Solid voice acting/soundtrack
    • Great AI system which is rare for action-RPGs

    Honey's Cons:

    • Various settings aren’t the nicest to look at
    • Combat can often feel stale and sluggish
    • Exploring areas can become a bit repetitive
    • Doesn’t have that engaging of a story

    Honey's Final Verdict:

Arc of Alchemist can at times feel a bit stiff and really isn’t the best example of a great action-RPG but in our minds, it does an okay job. We enjoyed the cast of characters, loved the deep RPG mechanics and felt the character sprites were incredibly well done. However, Arc of Alchemist’s main combat system and story can be a bit weak which will ensure not everyone falls in love with this game. Do you agree with us or are you not even going to play Arc of Alchemist? Comment below to let us know! Even more game reviews await in our amazing hive here at Honey’s Anime!

    • It can be quite the arduous task of differentiating fact from fiction when it comes to certain scenarios, and such is the case with the recent controversy surrounding Boku no Hero Academia's character "Daruma Ujiko". In a recent episode of the popular series, Daruma Ujiko's name was eventually revealed to be Maruta Shiga, who many foreign fans claimed to have a connection to Imperial Japanese Army’s Unit 731, which was a unit focused around human experimentation.
    • Creator Kohei Horikoshi always places a disclaimer in his manga letting readers know that all characters within the series are created based on imagery and personality, but perhaps all of that was lost in translation as social media exploded with very mixed reactions. After the dust settled, both Kohei Horikoshi and Shounen Jump issued a formal apology to fans about the decision of the name, and have stated they will rename the character to avoid further conflict.
    • What do you all think about this? Did fans in Asia just take things a bit too far? Or do you feel it was justified? Let us know in the comments.

    The King of Viking Anime

    • Episodes : Vinland Saga
    • Genre : Action, Adventure, Historical, Drama, Seinen
    • Airing Date : July 2019 – December 2019
    • Producers : Wit Studio

    Vinland Saga Introduction and Story

Young Thorfinn finds himself delaying his quest to kill his Viking boss Askeladd further and further as their band of merry murdering pillagers falls deeper down the rabbit hole that is their mission to protect the Danish Prince Canute. The plunge will lead them to Wales, warzones, peace deals, the young cast members learning more about themselves, and to the audience learning more about the older ones.

Why You Should Watch Vinland Saga
    [sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="IMDB" url="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt10233448/mediaviewer/rm863083777" ]

    1. That Trademark Wit

Though not always as consistent as some fans may have liked, Wit Studio has spent most of the past decade producing some of the most visually polished anime of the time like Attack on Titan or Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress, something Vinland Saga seems thrilled to remind people about. When this show wants to, it can put just about anything else on air to shame with its trademark sleek color and shading with fluid movements punctuated by just the right amount of blur that long-time Wit viewers will expect.

    2. Firing a Viking Canon

Anybody who dropped Vinland Saga during its first run probably did so because of its unbalanced pacing mostly caused by episodes 5 and 6 and their egregious reliance on filler. Those people will be happy to know that not only is every episode thereafter wholly committed to the canon set by the original manga, but the series flows much smoother as a result.

    [ad_middle class="mt40"]
Why You Should Skip Vinland Saga

    1. To Render Asunder

Vinland Saga’s second cours followed in the footsteps of the first by being tragically inconsistent with its at times breathtaking visuals, with every episode having its awkward moments that bring the overall quality down considerably. For every gloriously rendered closeup, there’s a noticeably off-model wide shot, for every background that has enough detail to feel real there’s another that looks flat, and especially, for every fluid 2D animation cut there’s a jarring CGI asset. The show’s final half is much more tasteful in choosing what to leave to CGI, but what’s seen often feels like a career-low for director Shuuhei Yabuta, responsible for 3D direction and production on shows like No Game No Life, Shingeki no Kyojin and Inuyashiki.

    2. Finn-ality

Vinland Saga has always had a Game of Thrones-esque political angle to compliment Thorfinn’s storyline, which centers more around action and raw emotion. The show gives an appropriately balanced amount of exposure to both of these facets during most of its run, but by the end, our young Viking's journey of vengeance takes a backseat to Askeladd and Canute’s quest for succession. Thorfinn isn't just sidelined, he is absent during many of the last third’s most pivotal scenes. And when his vendetta against his father’s killer comes back into play in episode 22, the resulting feeling is less “this is what we’ve been waiting for” and more “oh yeah, I guess that was a thing once, huh?”

    Final Thoughts

    [sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="IMDB" url="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt10233448/mediaviewer/rm3082391297" ]

Both halves of Vinland Saga thrive on the strengths of the adapted story and Wit's ability to give it motion but suffer from a few instances of bad decision making. The result is a series of many hits and misses, but thankfully one where the hits are more than enough to keep viewers invested through its home stretch and even after it slides onto home plate.

Samurai 8: Hachimaru Den chapter 34 started off on a great note to show the fate of Benki, Sanda, and Ryu. For his crimes, Ben finds himself sentenced to 200 years in prison and observation after said 200 years! Sanda and Ryu, luckily, get a forgiveness of sorts. Rather than being imprisoned too, they are to accompany a fellow samurai in his quest to find Hanaichi—who seems similar to Daruma—and capture him. Despite their parting, we’re sure our two new allies will once more meet Hachimaru later during his quest! The story then shifts to a planet seemingly at peace, until a rather sudden attack happens. A young girl is saved by a group of samurai just before an attack is unleashed on the planet, destroying it all! The girl’s savior…just so happens to be Hanaichi, who the earlier samurai was looking for. The quest for the samurai keys seems to be getting underway and we can tell…some sides aren’t messing around during their search! Our chapter wraps up with Hachimaru learning that he needs his master to wake up to obtain a much-needed key map. Thankfully, Daruma was prepared for a long rest and allows our cybernetic samurai to connect to him while he snoozes. Within Daruma, Hachimaru learns that the only way for him to grow as a samurai is to begin to train his inner stats—which are incredibly RPG orientated—which will help him in the search for the keys to Pandora’s Box! As the two wait for the lengthy map download, a stranger interrupts and we learn this being is known as The Warrior God…Fudo Myo-O! Needless to say, this was a pretty big chapter of Samurai 8: Hachimaru Den and here are a few reasons why sleeping on this chapter might not be the best idea!

    1. New Ally in Waiting?

Samurai 8: Hachimaru Den hasn’t shied away from showing dozens of characters in this epic series but we might finally see a new samurai main appear. Hanaichi might seem kind of goofy looking—more than Daruma is—but this cat-samurai might be a necessary warrior for our team! Now is this cat warrior strong? We can’t wait to find out!

    2. Time to Grind!

Seeing Hachimaru’s stats versus Daruma’s was quite hysterical. Hachimaru has a lot to learn in terms of fighting—and maybe try to be more charismatic—but with Daruma guiding him it should be simple. However, that warrior god appearing inside Daruma does make us wonder if this will be how Hachimaru begins his quest to level up.

Now we have to wonder…what will happen next? We have gods appearing and planets being obliterated. What really awaits our samurai heroes in the next chapter?
