Discussion Time

Sanda had a choice last week that could have not only doomed a whole entire planet but also Hachimaru and his allies. Thankfully, Sanda proved he’s not who he once was in this 32nd chapter of Samurai 8: Hachimaru Den. Told by Benki that Sanda was using his father’s sword—Ben is truly an evil dude—Sanda broke Ryu’s trap and surprised everyone via his action. In a strange twist, Ryu then turned his blade on Sanda but we learn quickly it was a ploy to get Ben shocked allowing the two to attack the giant together! The trap, in turn, is deactivated and our heroes begin to hear the alarm claxon that shows time is running out! Several samurai head towards the nuke’s control panel while Hachimaru and the others deal some seemingly fatal blows to Ben! Just as the final seconds ring on the warhead being launched, we see a hand reach out to the console at the two-second mark and then…NOTHING! That’s right folks, we must now wait two weeks—as Viz/Shonen Jump is getting the rest they need—before we learn if the warhead was turned off or not. Despite that painful cliffhanger, this week’s chapter of Samurai 8: Hachimaru Den was exciting and truly enjoyable. Here are a few reasons why you shouldn’t wait till the last second and check out chapter 32 for yourself!

Why You Should Read Samurai 8: Hachimaru Den (Samurai 8: The Tale of Hachimaru) Chapter 32

1. A Good Guy

We won’t lie, readers. There was a moment we worried that Sanda was going to go against his good nature and betray our heroes. Thankfully, Sanda proved us right—in that he is indeed a loyal warrior—and saved his friends/comrades! That dual slice by Ryu and him was so epic!

2. Two Seconds…MORE LIKE TWO WEEKS!

Samurai 8: Hachimaru Den pulled a sneaky stunt and we can’t hate it. Just as the final two seconds of the warhead were announced, the chapter ends leaving us wondering…WHAT HAPPENED!?!? We doubt the warhead will launch—this is a shonen after all—but you never know.

Final Thoughts

Samurai 8: Hachimaru Den 32 was an action-packed chapter that felt quick but fluid. Every panel counting down the warhead’s final launch sequence had something going on keeping us constantly feeling the timer. That is a truly rare feeling in the world of manga, conveying actual time with fictional time. That’s why chapter 32 of Samurai 8: Hachimaru Den was truly a great entry in this series. What did you think of this chapter? Do you feel it is weaker than the rest? Comment below to let us know. Stick around to our hive for even more Samurai 8: Hachimaru Den chapter reviews done by us here at Honey’s Anime!

Dr. Stone Introduction

As you read this review, try to picture yourself just living out your daily routine. You get up, have breakfast, brush your teeth, take a shower, and enjoy the rest of your day. All of a sudden, you and everybody else (as in humans and some birds) turn into stone for the next 3,000+ years! During that period, the world naturally reverts back to its primitive state and modern society ceases to exist. As select members of humanity manage to free themselves from their petrified prisons after over 4 millenniums, they have to start back from square one. As for teenage science enthusiast Senkuu Ishigami, he’s doing the best he can with what mother nature has to bring back centuries of scientific advancements within a year! However, Tsukasa Shishio, a former up-and-coming teenage MMA fighter, opposes Senkuu’s plans for reviving everyone as he only wants to recreate a world for the youth. As a result, Senkuu and Tsukasa create their own respective “nations” and prepare for war.

Why You Should Watch Dr. Stone
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="crunchyroll" url="https://www.crunchyroll.com/dr-stone" ]

1. It’s Educational

For those that want an anime version of “Bill Nye: The Science Guy,” (while also mixing in a little “MacGyver”) Dr. Stone perfectly fits that bill! It teaches its audience how they can use the most primitive of materials to make modern-day conveniences. As we say in our title, this anime is about humanity having to reinvent the wheel times 100 billion! Within the course of a year, Senkuu manages to create a society that can use electricity and communications! Dr. Stone portrays how to make a light bulb, a waterwheel that produces electricity, and antibiotics that treat pneumonia! When it comes to the more complicated parts of a certain device or chemical, the series displays fun flow charts (accompanied by the explanations by Mecha Senkuu) on how it functions. Of course, there are some experiments portrayed in this series that you shouldn’t try at home!

2. Every Character Has a Role

As Dr. Stone’s story expands, so does its cast. What makes this anime captivating is that every character has a role to play. You see the positive influence Senkuu has on most of the people he encounters. Other key characters such as Kohaku, Chrome, and Kaseki all have something to contribute. The series gives each of these characters enough time to develop and for the audience to connect with them. One notable moment that demonstrates this is when Kaseki solidifies his friendship with Chrome and Senkuu as “science bros.”

3. The Antagonist Has Legitimate Motivations

While Tsukasa can be extreme with his methods (ie, breaking off the heads of people who are still petrified), he has legitimate reasons for only wanting to revive the youth. Through his back story, he shares how he was mistreated and abused by adults. In a way, the audience can interpret his motivations as a criticism of the elderly dominance in Japanese society, and how it negatively affects the modern-day youth of Japan.

[ad_middle class="mt40"]
Why You Should Skip Dr. Stone

1. Underused Antagonist

While we already know that Tsukasa is going to have a bigger role in season 2, in this installment, his presence is only in the first and last few episodes. Tsukasa is not only strong, he shows he’s as smart as Senkuu when it comes to science! This is demonstrated when he realized that a certain element found near hot springs could be used as gunpowder, and he immediately comes to that conclusion! The fact that he’s physically strong and scientifically aware makes him the ultimate antagonist, and it’s a shame that he’s underused throughout the series, but there’s season 2 to look forward to.

2. All About World Building

For those of you who don’t like anime that relies on world-building, then this season of Dr. Stone is probably not for you. Most of this anime is all about world-building, but the situation portrayed in the story does a great job of justifying it. Even so, we understand there are viewers out there who aren’t into that kind of storytelling. We get that it slows things down so if you want something a little more fast-paced, this probably isn’t for you.

Final Thoughts

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="viz" url="https://www.viz.com/blog/posts/shonen-jump-new-chapters-10-27-19" ]

While we can’t ignore the notion that most of this series is just setting things up for Stone Wars, or season 2, the first season does an excellent job of introducing its core elements with its setting and characters. Not only is Dr. Stone a great story about survival and the joys of science, it’s also a touching story about friendship and community. Through the people of Ishigami Village, viewers can see that when everyone works together, they can accomplish great things and overcome any adversity.

Why We Can’t Wait for Ryu Ga Gotoku 7: Hikari to Yami no Yukue (Yakuza: Like a Dragon)

While an international release date for the seventh installment of Sega’s Yakuza franchise has yet to be announced (other than it’ll be released in 2020), we’re still a month away from its Japanese launch. With Kazuma Kiryu—the previous franchise protagonist—now “retired,” the upcoming seventh game is going to introduce a new lead, Ichiban Kasuga. In addition to a new main character, the series is getting another overhaul as it is forgoing its trademark combat system for a traditional turn-based J-RPG one. In addition to these new features, we’d like to share why we can’t wait for Ryu Ga Gotoku 7: Hikari to Yami no Yukue, otherwise known as Yakuza: Like a Dragon.

J-RPG Influences

We know that Ryu Ga Gotoku 7 becoming a J-RPG has been a controversy amongst its hardcore fans, but after reading and watching some interviews with the developers about why they decided to make such drastic changes, we’re willing to give it a chance. As portrayed in its recent demo, not only do you get to play as Ichiban but also the other characters in his party! Under the old engine, there are times when Kiryu gets to fight alongside his allies but in those instances, players only fight as Kiryu. Take for example, in the second Yakuza game, there are fights where Kiryu teams up with Kaoru, his love interest. Granted, players could do double teams against enemies, but they never get the option to play as Kaoru. We get that a good number of fans don’t mind that they didn’t have such options, but a J-RPG allows the opportunity to simultaneously control every character in the party, and exploit whatever skills they have throughout the battle. In previous interviews, Nagoshi and other staff members have stated that they wanted to make the seventh game an RPG in order to connect with its themes of friendship. When players start Ichiban’s quest, he’s a bum who was betrayed by the people he cared about. In order to stop whatever evil plot is happening, Ichiban knows he’ll need all the help he can get. Through a turn-based RPG system where characters must have each other’s backs, it gives players better opportunities to immerse themselves with the intended themes. Another theme that is expressed through the new RPG system is starting from the bottom and going to the top. Through grinding and leveling up, players can get a better feel of Ichiban’s journey as he becomes stronger to face whatever threats he has to stop and overcome his adversities.

Yokohama

In addition to Kamurocho (based on Kabukicho, one of Tokyo’s biggest red-light districts), other installments of Yakuza have also taken place in Osaka, Naha, Nagoya, Sapporo, Onomichi, and ancient Kyoto. As for the seventh game, it’s going to take our new heroes to Yokohama, which neighbors Tokyo. While Yokohama’s Chinatown has loosely been depicted in previous games through cutscenes, players are going to be treated to something a lot more comprehensive. For Ryu Ga Gotoku 7, players are going to get a virtual tour of downtown Yokohama as a whole! As portrayed in the demo, players can explore Hinodecho (Yokohama’s red-light district), Isezaki-Chojamachi (a trendy shopping district) and Jinnai Station, which is inspired by Kannai Station. As seen in the trailers, our heroes will also get to see Yamashita Park and the Sakuragicho area of downtown Yokohama. Producers have stated that the map of Yokohama is going to be three times bigger than Kamurocho, so players are going to get to see Yokohama’s famous sights such as Landmark Tower, the Red Brick Warehouse, and the Cosmo World amusement park!

Traditional Themes are Refreshed

Naturally, the Yakuza franchise portrays a gruesome world of money, power, and women, but it has also done an unorthodox job of glorifying Japan’s most notorious criminal organizations by presenting themes of honor and loyalty in its world. Naturally, Ichiban’s story is bound to bring new twists to it. Unlike Kiryu who can dodge bazooka missiles and take on 500 gangsters, Ichiban isn’t much of a badass and because he has spent most of his adult life in prison, he never had any chance to find out who he really is. As portrayed in the trailers, Ichiban shows he is loyal to his gang and is willing to take the fall for a fellow member. As a result, he spends the next 18 years in prison only to be betrayed upon his release. As a result, Ichiban has to start over with NOTHING, and how the player builds him up to becoming a (probable) savior by making new friends and finding legitimate ways to make money, helps refresh its themes. Through Ichiban’s viewpoint, who is more emotionally vulnerable than Kiryu, players are going to get a different idea of loyalty and brotherhood within the yakuza.

Final Thoughts

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="B07WZS3X28" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]

As we all know, Ryu Ga Gotoku 7 marks a new beginning of the series. However, as portrayed in recent trailers, certain characters are confirmed to come back so we know there’s a lot to look forward to. We understand that changes can be scary and unwanted, but sometimes, the things we don’t want can be better than what we were expecting. Ryu Ga Gotoku 7 isn’t ashamed to admit that it’s doing something different and after six games, a prequel, and four spin-offs, taking a different approach may help the franchise move forward and keep it fresh. If not, Sega has already admitted that it’s willing to go back to square one and bring back the old fighting engine. Other than that, we’re still excited about what Ryu Ga Gotoku 7 is bound to offer.

This last decade has brought us many beloved anime whether they lasted 1 season or 5. All kinds of isekai, romance, and shounen anime stood out but what many of these genres shared was a distinctive comedy. While anime can usually rely too strongly on the same old jokes and gags, there were a number of shows that were just as refreshing as they were hilarious. Trying to narrow down what anime made us laugh the most in the last ten years is a tall order, but here are our best recommendations for the top 10 best anime for the 2010s!

[ad_top2 class="mt40 mb40"]

10. Aggressive Retsuko (Aggretsuko)

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="B01N2NM0R1" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]
[en][information_general item1 = "Episodes" content1="100 (JPN)/10 (Netflix)" item2="Aired" content2="April 2016 - March 2018 (JPN)/April 2018 (Netflix)" post_id=""][/en]
[es][information_general item1 = "Episodios" content1="___content1___" item2="Emisión" content2="___content2___" post_id=""][/es]

Retsuko is a young office lady who has to deal with a lot of unpleasantness in her work life. Unfortunately, any sort of backtalk or lashing out will lead to undesirable outcomes so she’s forced to bottle it all up. That is until she makes it to her favorite karaoke place where she can scream her grievances to death metal! Even the sweet, quiet ones have their limits. One fun thing about the characters of Aggretsuko is that everyone is an animal! The whole company is a zoo in more ways than one with hyenas, fennec foxes, pigs, gorillas, and more. Otherwise, it’s a pretty relatable show for working-age people about having to do more than their job requirements or having to stomach unfair treatment at the hands of their bosses. Even with its rather bleak premise, it’s quite funny. Poor Retsuko totally transforms from a mild-mannered lady to a vicious fighter once she gets her hands on the mic!

9. Chuunibyou Demo Koi ga Shitai! (Love, Chunibyo, & Other Delusions!)

Once identifying as the Dark Flame Master in his middle school years, Yuuta has chosen to leave this all behind and start fresh at a high school far away from anyone who could know his dark secret. Still plagued by memories of his embarrassing behavior, Yuuta gets rid of any traces that would let others recognize his past chuunibyou, those delusions of dark powers. His past comes back to haunt him in the form of his new classmate Rikka who announces to the class that her cursed eye resonates at Yuuta’s presence. It seems like leaving his chuunibyou days behind won’t be so simple. While this show may not be directly relatable for everyone, most of us either were or know the person to skulk in the shadows and quote edgy books. It can be painful to see similar behavior acted out but it’s done in a fun and charming way. Yuuta is often brought to tears by his own childhood antics and yet he’s forced to babysit his chuunibyou neighbor Rikka who has no shame. Seeing the difference between the epic battles playing out in her mind with the reality of her sister beating her with a ladle is pretty great.

8. Nichijou (Nichijou – My Everyday Life)

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="B00519B4JG" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]
[en][information_general item1 = "Episodes" content1="26" item2="Aired" content2="April 2011 – September 2011" post_id=""][/en]
[es][information_general item1 = "Episodios" content1="___content1___" item2="Emisión" content2="___content2___" post_id=""][/es]

In the everyday lives of high school girls Mio, Yuuko, and Mai, things are constantly catching them off guard. Even the child-professor and robot living nearby have a hard time keeping up with the various violent and sassy animals in their town. Even trying to study for (or skipping out on) a test can prove to be a harrowing experience. No matter what happens, though, they still keep looking forward to the next day! Nichijou is misleading in that is sounds like it would be a pretty normal slice of life anime when, in reality, it’s a barely coherent timeline with crazy scenarios held together only by the different characters meeting and recognizing each other later on. Otherwise, the events seem incredibly random and you can pretty much enjoy the episodes in any sequence as much as you would watching in chronological order. You can’t help but laugh at the conclusions the girls come to when faced with even the most mundane obstacles. When the talking cat tends to be the one that makes the most sense, you know you’re in for a weird time.

7. Shoukugeki no Souma (Food Wars! Shokugeki no Soma)

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="crunchyroll" url="http://www.crunchyroll.com/food-wars-shokugeki-no-soma" ]

[es][information_general item1 = "Episodios" content1="___content1___" item2="Emisión" content2="___content2___" post_id=""][/es]

Boys become men when they no longer live in their father’s shadow, and that’s the goal of Souma Yukihara to become a chef that even rivals his legendary dad. So determined is he that Yukihara enters the Tootsuki Culinary Academy. Saying the produce the world’s top chefs would be an understatement; the graduates are near cooking gods. Famous for their Food Wars, where students battle for supremacy, spices are their weapons, ingredients are their tools, and cooking utensils are their shields in these high-stake battles. With so many first-years dropping out, can Yukihara survive to be in the 10% that make it to graduation? If you think that an anime about cooking couldn’t hold your attention, you’d be wrong. Everything from the varied characters, beautiful artwork, and ridiculous reactions to good food can easily keep you entertained. It’s amazing how a show can be both so educational and yet so stupidly funny. Every taste-test is like an acid trip with people turning into vegetables or skinny-dipping in a pot of soup. There’s a lot of ecchi hilarity over the inappropriate but entertaining three seasons.

6. Hataraku Maou-sama! (The Devil is a Part-Timer!)

In Ente Isla, hordes of demons begin taking over under the command of Lord Satan. Against all odds, the hero Emelia uses all of her strength to force the demon and his right-hand man Ashiya to flee. They manage to escape immediate danger but find themselves in the mortal realm of Earth where their powers are severely weakened! Being a demon king doesn’t pay the bills so Satan, now known as Sadao, takes up a part-time job at the fast-food chain MgRonalds. Few things are funnier than a once-powerful, sadistic person being forced into a role of servitude. It’s especially funny seeing how Sadao and Ashiya try to fit in and understand the humans’ ‘strange ways’. Things that are quite normal for us bring forth great interest and sometimes fear for our demon cast. Things get even better when Emelia immerges from Ente Isla and is torn between needing to fit in and her desire to destroy the now part-time-employed Lord Satan.

Pathetic recluse Kazuma died as he lived; only thinking about gaming. When he arrives before the goddess Aqua, he’s given the choice between going to heaven or begin reincarnated in a medieval fantasy realm much like the kind of games he plays. He is only allowed to bring one thing with him and he all too readily chooses both the fantasy reincarnation and to bring Aqua herself! Unexpected complications arise for both of them as Aqua’s powers are weakened and IRL adventures are a lot more exhausting than computer adventures! KonoSuba takes what would seem like simple fantasies and makes them near burdens. A beautiful fantasy world? There’s no tutorial and the weak get pushed around. Beautiful goddess accompanying you? She’s super weak now and is quick to throw you under the bus! New comrades? A chuunibyou that can attack once before passing out and a masochist for a knight… You can’t even feel that bad for Kazuma, though, because his immediate example of equality is getting to hit his female friends.

4. Hinamatsuri

Yakuza member Nitta may not be in the high ranks, but he’s respected for his hard work and loyalty to the family. He finds himself in a different family dynamic when a young alien girl crashes into his home. Hina has little to say and doesn’t emote but reveals that her incredible powers will become unstable without proper use. Not wanting her to become the weapon she was created to be, Nitta ends up watching over her. Trying to maintain his image as a productive member in the yakuza while raising a little kid is a tall order when the kid could also wipe out the city. Hinamatsuri is a great anime because it manages to be unbelievable, hilarious, and sobering at different parts. You might not think there could be a relatable message in a show about a yakuza dad with an alien girl but there are times you’ll be shocked at the sobering reality they discuss. Then it’s back powerful aliens playing children’s games and a guy desperately trying to account for the needs of a young girl and it’s great fun.

3. Saiki Kusuo no Ψ-nan (The Disastrous Life of Saiki K.)

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="B01LYZPWPV" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]
[en][information_general item1 = "Episodes" content1="120" item2="Aired" content2="July 2016 – December 2016" post_id=""][/en]
[es][information_general item1 = "Episodios" content1="___content1___" item2="Emisión" content2="___content2___" post_id=""][/es]

Saiki is a gifted child but in his eyes, he’s cursed. His amazing powers of telepathy, teleportation, and telekinesis would make his life easier if he didn’t have to try so hard to keep them a secret from everyone else. He tries to keep others at arm’s length but he seems to naturally draw to people to him. What a difficult life Saiki leads! With only 5 minutes an episode, it’s easy to get lost watching Saiki. Despite, or maybe because Saiki is such a stoic character, it’s a hilarious show. You’d think the kid with superpowers would be the one doing the unbelievable stuff but instead, it’s the school idol that’s too into herself, the chuunibyou that won’t shut up, and the empty-headed yankee-looking dude that acts like a puppy that make you question what you just saw and heard. Seeing a way over-powered kid try his best to do things in the most normal way possible is pretty funny when all his less-impressive fellow students are so unrestrained.

The Matsuno sextuplets may be identical (and similarly avoidant of responsibility) but they are quite different individuals! It’s a shame for their parents that not one is cut out for adult life. Osomatsu, Karamatsu, Choromatsu, Ichimatsu, Jyuushimatsu, and Todomatsu live their lives following their passions like petting cats and playing games and genuinely avoiding real work. However, avoiding work can be a real job itself! In a show where the characters’ situations and even histories are constantly changing in the most bizarre ways, the only real constants are the sextuplets’ characters. They may have similar goals they strive for together but they often diverge on how to get there in the most ridiculous ways. Nothing is off-limits from jokes about masturbation, hitting children, and even incest. Common decency be damned, and you’ll definitely find something new to laugh about if you’ve grown tired of more run-of-the-mill comedy

Yorozuya members Gintoki, Shinpachi, and Kagura will take any odd job that comes their way and as such have created quite a reputation for themselves. That is until Shinpachi returns after their one-year hiatus only to discover the others have completely changed. In fact, all the residents of Edo seem to be entirely different. Shinpachi nearly loses hope when he finds his older sister pregnant and married to the masochistic stalker she would normally beat up. When things are already completely backward, Shinpachi does the only nonsensical thing that makes sense; he turns to the Shinsengumi for help. We wanted to stick to this last decade but even if you didn’t watch the first Gintama, you’ll catch up quite quickly. Shinpachi does a good job recounting the plot even though Gintoki and Kagura give him crap for trying. With a series that’s constantly breaking the fourth wall and using references from other anime for gags, it’s hard to tell that anything is even terribly different in the first episode for a while. With new characters and new dangers, it’s the same old unpredictable Gintama that will keep you laughing through the decade!

Final Thoughts

Animation has the freedom to more easily explore controversial and downright impossible scenarios that live-action shows often can’t match. The best comedy is unpredictable and we can clearly see that on our list. Nichijou and Aggretsuko might be a little more easy to watch and appeal to a younger demographic and when it comes to shows like Osomatsu-san and Gintama’, we’d recommend not watching in public or being faint of heart! Whatever your fancy, we hope you laugh long and hard to these top 10 best comedy anime of the 2010s! If you feel there are other anime deserving of recognition, please leave a comment with your suggestion!

DRAGON BALL Z: KAKAROT - Launch Trailer

Who it Caters to

We have had a lot of Dragon Ball related games over the decades. Some have been truly amazing—such as the recent Dragon Ball FighterZ—and others have been extremely poor…Dragon Ball GT: Final Bout for example. However, the RPG focused Dragon Ball games have all been mediocre, to say the least so when Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot was announced don’t blame us for being a bit hesitant. Instead of a 2D fighter or 3D brawler, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is an action/RPG where you control Goku and other Z fighters as they journey through the numerous arcs of the Dragon Ball Z series. Is Goku’s latest new adventure worth plunging into or does it fall victim to being yet another stale RPG? We find out in our full review of Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot for the PS4!

What to Expect

For the first time ever, players get to experience the world of Dragon Ball Z in a larger perspective! Freely roam around various Dragon Ball locations and encounter various quests to take on and/or enjoy the freedom to train and become the ultimate warrior. Engage in story-related missions and even some newly unseen content that spans across the various arcs such as the Saiyan Saga all the way through Buu’s! Fight in free-ranged battles using legendary moves and unleashing numerous transformations such as Kaioken or even the legendary Super Saiyan form! Here’s a question for you great warrior…how will you live as Son Goku first in Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot!?
[ad_top2 class="mt40 mb40"]

Story

Goku’s story has been told numerous times before but in Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot you’re going to dive into his tale in a way never before seen. Assume the role of Goku and various other warriors as he fights off the Saiyan invaders, battles Cell and numerous other villains from the Dragon Ball Z lore. Experience Goku’s story by living in his shoes as you will train with numerous characters and even need to fish for food to fill Goku’s never-ending appetite! Learn of hidden stories unseen in the main series and meet familiar faces from the Dragon Ball world! Goku is going on one more adventure but in Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot, this adventure is larger than ever before!

Gameplay

It can be a bit strange for new gamers to see a Dragon Ball game not be a 2D fighter or 3D brawler. Yet, for those who remember, Dragon Ball has not shied away from the RPG realm. However, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot isn’t like the top-down RPG gameplay found in Dragon Ball Z: Buu’s Fury or the brawling action of Dragon Ball Z: Sagas. Instead, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is a larger than life action RPG with an emphasis on large. You’ll understand what we mean as we dive deeper into the gameplay found in Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot! Right off the bat, you’re going to be thrown into the main gameplay element of Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot. Players will soon learn that like the Xenoverse games, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is a 3D action fighter but with a focus on RPG elements. Rather than have combos you perform with a myriad of buttons, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot plays close to having everything assigned to several buttons. Unleash ki blasts with the hit of a face button or unleash devastating auto combos with another. Use the shoulder buttons in conjunction with the face buttons and you can unleash numerous series special attacks such as the Kamehameha wave or Piccolos’ Special Beam Cannon! As you progress further, you’ll unlock even more skills and even get the legendary transformations known in Dragon Ball Z. What keeps combat fun and exciting—though we will mention its faults later—is that battles aren’t just button mashing affairs. Early on fights with lesser-known robots and grunts—you’ll fight these a lot in Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot—can be won by slamming melee but when you face down larger foes like Cell or Vegeta, you’ll need to use everything in your arsenal of moves. You can always guard—though it can be broken if held down against strong attacks—or use flash movements to avoid attacks and hit your foe from behind! Even using special forms like Kaioken aren’t an instant win as they always come with a catch. In the case of Kaioken, using it will deplete your health constantly and Super Saiyan modes deplete your Ki making you exhausted or unable to use special attacks. Add to this the occasional fights where you need to rely on your team—which they come with their own AI that’s smart and special move palette—and Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot can be quite engaging when it wants to be.
Now fighting at first is pretty simple but when you begin to level up and unlock the community boards, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot opens up quite a bit. As you progress through the story, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot gives players community boards which act as a means of gaining special perks while fighting. For example, one community board will have a focus on Piccolo and give those who put points into it—you need gifts or random items to do this—perks that can increase your ki attacks or give defense against them in turn. You’ll also get Soul Emblems as you meet characters in Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot that can be put into those community boards and unlock even greater boons. These boards aren’t necessary early on in Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot but by the Frieze Saga arc, not using them might make fights a bit too tough. Another aspect of Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is the exploration which is where the problems of this game begin to pop up. Exploring Goku’s world is pretty amazing as it allows you to visit special locations known through the universe and even meet old friends! You can fish, train with enemies—some of which are harder than the main bosses—and take on quests for numerous items and experience points. The problem with exploration is that none of it feels needed. It might be cool to find Bibi and Launch—two well-known Dragon Ball characters—but its more for homage purposes than to add any life to the world of Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot. Training also gets tedious quickly and often only gives you a frugal amount of EXP which won’t help much to level up. Exploring in Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot feels a bit lifeless and that is a shame given this huge world filled with beauty.
Jumping back into combat, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot falters when you realize that as deep as the game can be…it also is quite shallow. You’ll never not just use a few buttons to unleash special attacks and while it is impressive to clash with foes, the feeling ultimately feels overly simple. This doesn’t change even when you begin to have larger scale battles like fighting Great Apes or large scale battles. You’re still hitting one button for melee, one for ki and one for defense/evasion. Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot could have learned a bit from the Xenoverse games and made combat a bit meatier. The biggest take away from Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot will no doubt be from the visuals. Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is easily the most gorgeous Dragon Ball game ever. Developer CyberConnect2 has always had a way of making anime adapted games into works of art as relevant from their work on Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja. There are some moments where the graphics actually trump the original animation and we were wowed by that. Sadly, there are some framerate issues when larger-scale attacks happen or an area loads but these rarely weakened the game. They were noticeable though during some big cutscenes which lessened the immersion factor considerably. Ultimately though, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot looks incredible and while it might not have the cel-shading found in Dragon Ball FighterZ, it has an art form that shows a lot of love towards the original anime.
[ad_middle class="mt40 mb40"]

Honey's Gameplay Consensus:

Here’s the deal with Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot. On one hand, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot does a lot right. Not only does the game look gorgeous and even—in some areas—surpass the original anime with special effects but there’s clearly a lot of love put into Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot. From character appearances to side stories that deepen the lore of Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot feels like the entire series put into a game. Combat also works quite well and often tests your skills with various systems in play. Unfortunately, as an RPG Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot falls a bit short with generic quests, boring lesser enemies and occasional framerate drops/lag. Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is a love letter to series fans—and newcomers will find it easy to dive into Goku’s world—but with a bit more polish this game could have avoided a lot of issues mentioned above. Thankfully, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot hits more than it misses.

Honey's Pros:

  • Excellent amount of detail for those who love the lore of Dragon Ball
  • Breathtaking visuals that occasionally surpass even the original series
  • Simple but intuitive combat that makes some battles pretty tough
  • Great soundtrack with original voice actors (both English and Japanese) reprising their roles
  • Deep RPG system that rewards players for doing more during the adventure/exploration segments

Honey's Cons:

  • Combat can occasionally be too simple
  • Quests and exploration do have some boring elements that make you rush through to the next big story segment
  • Framerate issues and lag were a big problem during some fights/cutscenes
  • Some RPG mechanics feel a bit tacked on

Honey's Final Verdict:

Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot has a plethora of small issues that keep it from being the best Dragon Ball Z game ever. That being said, developer CyberConnect2 has pulled off the impossible. Somehow, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is an amazing action/RPG with a lot of love for the fans and newcomers alike! We feel out of all the RPG bearing the Dragon Ball name, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is easily the best and is well worth your dollar! Are you excited now to play Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot? Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu: Die Neue These Seiran (The Legend of the Galactic Heroes: The New Thesis – Stellar War) Introduction

Continuing from the first season, the battle escalates for both the Galactic Empire and the Free Planets Alliance. However, things internally take a turn for the worst due to corruption within both governments. The Kaiser of the Galactic Empire suddenly passes away and his living relatives fight to take control of the Empire. Reinhard, an Admiral of the Imperial Navy, takes advantage of the chaos by fighting on two fronts. First, Reinhard releases a former Alliance Admiral from captivity and uses him to create a rebellion within the Alliance so they can eliminate themselves so Reinhard can easily conquer it at a later date. Second, he gets the best soldiers to side with him so they can fight the imperial establishment.

—Spoilers Ahead—

Why You Should Watch Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu: Die Neue These Seiran (The Legend of the Galactic Heroes: The New Thesis – Stellar War)
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="crunchyroll" url="http://www.crunchyroll.com/legend-of-the-galactic-heroes-die-neue-these" ]

1. Equally Portrays the Empire and Alliance as Good and Evil

While most of this anime is about exploring the democracy of the Alliance and the dictatorship of the Empire, the second season is the best representation of presenting those qualities. Throughout Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu, viewers can see that democracies and dictatorships can be good and/or bad. In a democracy filled with bureaucrats elected by the people, viewers can see that change comes slowly, and there are countless instances where elected individuals serve only themselves, not the people. It’s obvious that dictatorships have gotten a bad rap thanks to Hitler, but when someone noble as Reinhard serves the people and not the 1%, then it’s possible that everyone wins when that dictator can institute change without the checks and balances of other branches of government, which could slow things down or not make them happen at all.

2. It Improves Some Scenes from the Original

While this is more of a Then Vs. Now kind of argument, we have to admit that some key scenes in Seran are a major improvement over the original 1988-1997 series. Two notables scenes in Seiran that surpass the original are when Kircheis comes to Iserlohn Fortress to exchange POWs with the Alliance, and the other is when Kircheis dies protecting Reinhard. In the original series, both scenes take place in a much smaller setting. When considering the importance of these scenes, a larger room is naturally more appropriate to complement their significance, and Seiran provides that! With these two key scenes now taking place in a larger setting, the scope, angles, and lighting further emphasize the game-changing impact of what they represent.

3. Friendship

This installment of Legend of the Galactic Heroes mostly concentrates on the internal aspects and one of its key themes is friendship. In the Empire, the audience is further treated to the relationship between Reinhard and Kircheis. After Kircheis goes against Reinhard for not preventing a nuclear strike on a planet when he could have, Reinhard strips him of some notable privileges. One notable privilege that was revoked was bringing a firearm to one of the main halls at an Imperial establishment. Thankfully, Kircheis shows he’s still loyal to Reinhard by still preventing his assassination without his firearm, but still at the cost of his own life. Touched by Kircheis’ loyalty, Reinhard grieves for his best friend and the audience and Reinhard’s own men can see that he lost a large part of himself with the loss of Kircheis.

[ad_middle class="mt40"]
Why You Should Skip Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu: Die Neue These Seiran (The Legend of the Galactic Heroes: The New Thesis – Stellar War)

1. You Need to Watch Season 1 First

Naturally, you’re going to have to watch season 1. If you come into Seiran without watching the first season, you’re going to be lost. Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu is an anime that is intended to be watched from start to finish. If you don’t watch from the beginning, you won’t have any context to the anime’s history, terminologies, advancements, characters, and the context of the relationships.

2. No Third Season Confirmed

Considering where Seiran ends, things are about to heat up. While Seiran was confirmed during the broadcast of the first season, no news of a third season has been announced. If there is no third season to Die Neue These, then fans are going to feel cheated. Yes, viewers can always go back to the original series to see the rest of the story, but the present installment does a great job of appropriately modernizing it in the way it needs to (do we really need to watch an anime where 1000 years in the future, floppy discs and wire graphics in computers are still in use?). We can’t deny that the original is a true classic, but the remake does a great job of appealing to new and old fans alike, and new fans who don’t want to see the original (even if we recommend it) equally deserve to see the full story with what has been portrayed so far.

Final Thoughts

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="VVCL-1523" text="" url="" ]

Without a shadow of a doubt, Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu is one of the greatest pieces in the world of Sci-Fi. It appeals to people of all political persuasions because it challenges and appeals to our beliefs. It shows that what we believe in may be right, or it may be wrong. It teaches us to look at things in a different way we never considered. Is democracy truly good because it’s for the people by the people? Are dictatorships bad just because one person has absolute rule? These very questions are why we recommend this series.

Birthday Wonderland (The Wonderland) Introduction and Story

Birthday Wonderland tells the story of Akane, who seems to be your atypical teenage girl. Often by herself, Akane isn’t the best when it comes to socializing which can make her life a bit problematic. The day before her birthday, Akane’s mother asks her to head to her Aunt Chii’s curios store and that’s where things get a bit bizarre. After putting her hand on a stone tablet, Akane ends up summoning a strange alchemist named Hippocrates and his servant Pipo. The two strangers who appear from the basement of Chii’s shop tell the two that they are here to find the Green Goddess and waste no time bring the pair to “The World Beyond”. After some strange meetups, Akane and Chii learn that this fantasy world is being plagued by a loss of water which is causing the trees to lose color and bigger issues to begin occurring. Add to that a strange mobile weapon called Armored Mouse has begun instilling fear into the citizens. Akane, despite not believing she has any powers, ends up going on a journey with her aunt to save this strange world and find a way back home! Along the way, the duo ends up meeting weird/strange characters who will help their journey along and equally provide them with trouble! Their biggest threat though comes in the form of the two pilots of the Armored Mouse one of which is named Zan Gu who just screams antagonist and his cat partner Doropo. The main goal of Akane, Chii, and Hippocrates is to save the world and also make sure the Prince—a character you’ll eventually learn more about—makes it to a special event that could alter the fate of the world. We won’t go into any further spoilers from here as Birthday Wonderland is an adventure of itself to watch but if you want to know some reasons why you should watch it—and possibly skip it—then continue below! In regards to the ending by the way, we will say it’s pretty solid overall and the movie has some great twists near the final thirty or so minutes that we were surprised to see!

Why You Should Watch Birthday Wonderland (The Wonderland)
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="ANZX-11595" text="" url="" ]

1. Whimsical Animation

One can almost get lost while watching Birthday Wonderland. From the backdrops to the character animations, every piece of this nearly two hour animated film bursts with vibrant color/life. We have seen many anime films like Birthday Wonderland but Signal MD should be given praise for the work they put into this movie!

Intriguing Fantasy World

There have been numerous Wonderland-like films—both anime and non-anime—made in the last century but Birthday Wonderland oozes with originality and uniqueness. We loved how multiple settings seem to blend in this strange otherworld such as steampunk and classic fantasy. It’s rare a story can blend so many themes together well but Birthday Wonderland does it with ease.

3. Incredible OST/Voice Acting

Is there a soundtrack available for Birthday Wonderland? If there is, we need to buy it now. We were absolutely floored by the incredible music/ambiance found in Birthday Wonderland and the voice acting is also pretty darn solid! These characters in Birthday Wonderland are all quite charismatic and without solid voice acting, we could see this film being quite lifeless and flat.

[ad_middle class="mt40"]
Why You Should Skip Birthday Wonderland (The Wonderland)
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="imdb" url="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt9563632/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0" ]

1. No Time to Waste

While it might be a fantasy-themed adventure film, Birthday Wonderland doesn’t wait for setups or anything like it. After the first few minutes, Birthday Wonderland is a non-stop fantasy film and that might be a bit off-putting to those who like slower themed stories. We didn’t feel the movie suffered from this quick pace but we equally felt the pains of Akane being thrown into this new world without much rhyme or reason initially.

2. Not Enough Time…

Easily the most amazing thing about Birthday Wonderland was the different landscapes and towns Akane and her aunt visit on their journey. Unfortunately, as this isn’t a series, Birthday Wonderland doesn’t allow for these great vistas to be fully fleshed out. This isn’t a big issue mind you but for those who love deep lore and attention to detail when it comes to story, you might get annoyed a bit.

3. Fly Hippocrates

About halfway through Birthday Wonderland our grand alchemist Hippocrates—for reasons we won’t spoil—turns into a fly and while it is funny for a few minutes it lasts way too long. This comedic but overly long transformation allows Akane and Chii to have a better amount of time bonding together but we do miss Hippocrates’ cool movements and actions even if he is a bit of a jerk to them.

Final Thoughts

Birthday Wonderland was a truly enjoyable film that should appease both young kids and adults alike! We loved how it was never too serious but kept us glued to the screen wondering how Akane and her crazed aunt Chii could truly save a world they were so foreign to. Needless to say, Birthday Wonderland deserves a viewing and we think many of you fantasy/adventure fans will do so without us even needing to tell you! Did you already perhaps see Birthday Wonderland? Comment below if you did! Creating a Blueprint

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]

Like any individual looking to venture out into the unknown, it’s imperative that you do some research before piecing things together. This is where creating a blueprint comes into play and can help you to establish a starting point for the team you desire to make. For starters, ask yourself, “What’s my favorite Pokémon? What are my favorite types? What playstyle will I focus on?” Being specific with your questions can better help to underline just where your focus is being guided, and give you the starting point to keep building. We’ll give you an example for starters: My favorite types of Pokémon in Sword and Shield are Water and Poison because, since Gen 1, water types are predominantly very strong due to their wide coverage and can provide a lot of setups with things such as Rain Dance, etc. Poison-types are among the strongest in terms of defensive play styles since their move pool generally creates obstacles for the other opponent to deal with, such as Toxic, Toxic Spikes, and all of the other attacks that sap the opponent’s life bar without much effort. Factor in that poison-types are only weak to ground and psychic-types, which make it a very big threat in the long run. Now with this in mind I’ve created a small blueprint to start off, which will now act as a compass to lead me towards the Pokémon that suits my needs. Since poison and water were mentioned we’ll go with Mantine and Drapion for starters.

Forming a Unit

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]

So now that we’ve established a starting point with both Mantine and Drapion, the next step is to form a unit around these two Pokémon. First, it’s important to note that Mantine is a water/flying-type and Drapion is a poison/dark-type, which means we’ll need to factor in their secondary typings moving forward. This is incredibly crucial when team building because you’ll have to pay careful attention to both typings along with their weaknesses. Water-types are generally weak to electric and grass-types, while flying is weak to electric, ice, and rock. This already puts Mantine at a severe disadvantage versus electric-types and must now be mindful of the hard-hitting rock-types. Fortunately, Mantine has immunity to the more threatening ground-types so as long as we cover these areas there should be no issue. Drapion’s only real weakness is ground and so when looking at both Pokémon, Mantine can help to protect Drapion from those critical hits versus ground-types, while Drapion can likely take a few electric hits before fainting. Clearly, we’re not finished because, in Pokémon, we need a team of 6 to get the ball rolling, so let’s think of other Pokémon that can complement these two. The overwhelming aspect of team building in Pokémon Sword and Shield is that there’s a plethora of Pokémon to choose from, so knowing which ones merit your team can be daunting when starting out. There are Pokémon that fit into certain meta categories which we’ll cover in a future segment but for now let’s use these 4 Pokémon: Rotom Wash, Mudsdale, Dusknoir, and Galarian Weezing. We’ve also included secondary options should you feel the need to opt-out for another Pokémon of similar typing.

Piecing Everything Together

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="Marriland" url="https://marriland.com/tools/team-builder/" ]

So now that we have a team of 6 we’ll need to start piecing everything together to ensure that our team has synergy. Synergy plays an integral role in building a consistent team because, without the right complimentary Pokémon, the unit can run into a lot of problems versus a wide variety of teams. It becomes glaringly obvious when your team simply can’t function well under pressure due to one Pokémon having to spend more resources in order to carry 2 other Pokémon, etc. With our team let’s dive into more detail and see just where our cracks lie: Rotom Wash [Water/Electric] or Rotom Heat [Fire/Electric] Galarian Weezing [Poison/Fairy] Drapion [Poison/Dark] Mantine [Water/Flying or ]Pelipper [Water/Flying] Gourgeist [Ghost/Grass] or Dusknoir [Ghost] Mudsdale [Ground] Other viable options: Dhelmise [Ghost/Grass] / Charizard [Fire/Flying] In this image, we can see that we have very strong ground coverage since 3 of our Pokémon have the ability Levitate, which grants them immunity. That’s already enough protection for Drapion! Earlier we mentioned Mantine being extremely weak to electric attacks so Mudsdale can jump in to counter that since it has electric immunity. The most glaring weakness of this team, however, comes in grass and ice, since it doesn’t really have a strong Pokémon that can truly cover both. Sure there’s Abomasnow and a few other grass-ice typings but they’re generally not strong enough or fast enough to really maintain a lead role, especially on this current team setup. Looking at the chart, we need to be able to establish control versus grass-types so that Rotom-Wash and Mudsdale can transition into battle smoothly. Gourgeist is a ghost/grass-type which is great because it helps us to cover those pesky water-types and ground-types like Gastrodon with Power Whip, and with its ghost typing, it gives us a strong advantage in coverage as well with Phantom Force. The only problem is we now have to pay more attention to its weaknesses because unlike Dusknoir’s mono-typing, Gourgeist has to worry about more threats along the way. We’ve mentioned Dusknoir as a secondary fit-in for Gourgeist and we’ll explain a little more succinctly. Dusknoir is strong due to its only weaknesses being ghost and dark, and it can learn things like Thunder Punch, Brick Break, and Fire Punch, moves that counter grass and ice-types but without STAB (Same Type Attack Bonus), the damage output may not be enough to secure a KO at all times. Bear in mind that these are all physical attacks as well and so if the opposing team is playing with physically defensive Pokémon, it may create some issues. Or so you would like to think! Just because a Pokémon doesn’t have STAB damage doesn’t mean you can’t alter it in a way to make it work in your favor. Dusknoir’s typing, high attack power, and bulk can allow it to dish out enough damage when it matters without running into too many risks from the more predominantly used types. Of course, there are other viable options to choose from but the point we’re trying to emphasize is quite evident: Team synergy is vital. There’s a lot to swallow in just this one segment and we’ve barely scratched the surface since there’s plenty more to discuss when it comes to picking the right Pokémon for the job. For now, let this be a guideline to help move you forward and perhaps give you some confidence on how to analyze things, plus take notes on how you’d like to approach developing a strategy.

Final Thoughts

In the next segment, we’ll be jumping into EVs, IVs, and the more intricate topics to help you better understand the next process of team building: Movesets. Knowing a Pokémon on the surface is great but understanding the meat and bones regarding how that Pokémon functions in battle is another thing, so we’ll help you to ensure your battles end in your favor! Until next time!

Briana Lawrence (Brichibi Cosplays) and Jessica Walsh (SnowCosplays) are a cosplaying and writing couple known as Sewn Together Reflections. Briana is perhaps best known for her magical girl novel/comic hybrid MagnifiqueNOIR, which had its second book release recently, and Jessica spends much of her time creating cosplays to flatter all figures. They’re also freelance non-fiction writers as well as advocates for diversity in media and self-esteem with cosplay. We caught up with Briana and Jessica at Ohayocon 2020 to discuss how they met, how they get inspired, and much more!

BRIANA LAWRENCE
Honey-Chan
Interview with JESSICA WALSH AND BRIANA LAWRENCE
[gray-hex-decoration]
Could you tell us how you two met and began working together on your creative pursuits?
We met writing Gundam Wing yaoi fanfiction... (laughs)
Yeah, back in 2001. We used to roleplay together—we still do—and we met in person at Anime Central in 2002. And we’ve been together ever since!
And we just got married a couple months ago!
Congratulations!
We started writing together right when we met because we were roleplaying, and [Jessica] started making my costumes a couple years after that.
Our relationship is our creativity and it’s not going away.
Aww! So, what is it about fanfiction that makes it so special to you?
I know, for me, it was the one source of good queer representation I had when I was coming out in the late ‘90s. Even if it wasn’t terribly accurate, it was at least not...
...really homophobic and tragic. It was at least positive, happy characters.
So that’s why it was really important to me. And I ended up using it to write more. Currently, it’s my “de-stress” because there are no deadlines and there’s no person to answer to, so I can just chill and write about BakuDeku when I feel like it.
I actually find fanfiction to be harder to write than original stuff, because you’re either stuck with the characters or you’re stuck with the universe, and it’s kind of a challenge. I used it to learn how to write and to keep my brain going when I’m working on other stuff.
How do you think the world of anime has evolved in terms of diversity and queer representation over time?
I grew up in a time where queer representation was censored. Sailor Moon airbrushing in breasts to make the character a woman so it wasn’t a queer relationship... that doesn’t really happen anymore.
And now we have things like Yuri on Ice where it wasn’t expected to actually be a relationship, but then we had that moment on the internet when everyone was like, “Oh my god, we’re actually going to get this! It’s okay!”
I remember watching reaction videos and being stunned because it was guys who were like, “Yes, they got together!” There are even anime now that are talking about trans people.
Like Zombieland Saga!
Yeah!
Even in My Hero Academia, they had the correcting of pronouns [with Magne]. When they were talking to Overhaul, he immediately accepted and said that he wouldn’t make that mistake again. Yes, the character was killed, but they still took the time to do that part.
It was like, “I’m going to destroy society, but I’m not going to destroy the fact that trans lives matter!” Also, there are young kid characters [in anime] who are looking up terms to figure out what they mean. I actually thought I’d never see it in an anime because I grew up when everything was censored or made fun of.
It’s even going back into the yaoi stuff now. Before, it was the only place where you might find something [queer], and then it went into regular anime, and now yaoi is starting to catch up, too. So, you’re seeing manga coming out that are actually about good relationships.
Like Given!
Yeah! And My Brother’s Husband, and My Lesbian Experience with Loneliness...
We’re not just trying to get the guys together to kiss—we’re actually going to talk about relationships. Especially in Given, because that was also talking about trauma. There’s a part where the main character is freaking out about liking another guy, and the other person in the band says, “Yeah, so what? You just like a dude. It’s fine—I also like guys. It happens.” So, it’s getting a lot better. There’s still room for improvement, of course, but it’s going in the right direction.
You both do a lot of freelance writing and self-published fiction. How did you build your brand and get the public interested in your work?
It started with cosplay. We got kind of popular with cosplay, and we thought, “We go to anime cons anyway, and we know how to talk to these people, so let’s make that part of our brand.”
I remember when one of my books came out, I wanted to start selling it at cons. The other artists said, “Why would you do that?” Usually, you go to a book convention or a book event for that, but I wanted to go to anime cons. That’s what our genre is and where our fans are, so why wouldn’t I go there? We’ve been going to cons since 2002, and did Artist’s Alley before then with crafts and art, and just thought, “What if we swap that out for books and go from there?” And with cosplay, I feel like it just happened by accident. I got harassed online and responded by writing about it.
But even before you got harassed, we got some local attention.
And we really don’t separate [writing and cosplay] anymore—it’s just us. When we get guest invites, I say, “Hi, we’re writers and cosplayers.”
So, it was less of a concentrated effort and more just building up your base over time?
Yeah, it just organically grew over time and we just kept pushing at it.
And we split up social media responsibilities. She does Instagram, we both do Twitter now but originally it was just me, and then we both do Facebook.
And she focuses on conventions, while I focus on book marketing and making costumes. Our creativity is everything!
Briana, you used Kickstarter for MagnifiqueNOIR, so did you reach out to your fans that you already had?
Yeah, and I asked people how Kickstarter works. The first time I tried it, it didn’t work, but the second and third times it did. And I guess since I was used to reaching out for conventions, reaching out to artists was easy. Also, self-promotion is key, especially with Kickstarter. I’m probably going to keep using it as much as possible for other projects. It’s reassuring because people are getting on-board before the thing is out, and so it encourages you to get it done.
It’s also a good reliable way to give updates, since most social media now throttles you and it’s hard to actually get updates out to everyone.
Do you have any tips for writers or cosplayers who want to promote themselves?
Use your current base. You have friends who likely have tried or are into certain things, so reach out to the people you know first. Once you’ve run out of that, at the events you go to, take the time to collect business cards and talk to people. Just keep growing your connections, and eventually you’ll have this giant network that you have no idea where it came from.
Pay attention to hashtags and things that are going on social media-wise, different groups that are similar to what you’re into...
Don’t stress if something doesn’t work for you, but it worked for someone else. Everyone’s way of [promoting themselves] is different, and what works for you is going to be completely different.
And if you need to take a break, take a break. I highly recommend taking breaks.
So, Briana, what was your inspiration for creating MagnifiqueNOIR?
I loved the magical girl genre to begin with. I was supposed to be working on something else, but instead my muses were like, “You want to draw a magical girl—do that instead.” So, I drew Galactic Purple, the lead character. And I used to do etching on woodblocks, so I did her face on a woodblock. Then I ended up doing four characters like that, and I went to a con and posted, “Is anyone interested in this?” And they sold out immediately! On the way to another con, [Jessica] said, “What if you made it a series?” And I said, “What if every character was black and every character was queer? Can I do that? Is that too crazy?” She said, “Well it’s your story—do what you want.” I recently had it featured on a website, and I got to write a preface for it. I wrote, “I wish I could say it was an idea I always had, that I always wanted this kind of representation, but the reality is that I thought I couldn’t and it took me a long time to get to the point where I was comfortable doing it.” And I feel like a lot of creators are like that because they see the stuff around them, and they figure that nobody is going to want to see someone who looks like them on a cover. I think I’ve always had the idea in the back of my head—“What’s the story that you would want your 18-year-old self, who’s in a college dorm room freaking out because she likes girls, to read?” That’s what this book is, but it just took me a long time to get there because I thought no one would want to read it. And I also just wanted a fun black girl story. There was a time when a parent was asking about the book and she wanted to know if it was happy. She was trying to get a book for her kid that had queer stuff, but she didn’t want it to be tragic and sad. I said, “Well, the most stressful moment for a queer character is what to wear on a date.” Because that’s what I worry about when I go on dates with my wife.
It doesn’t have to be angsty all the time.
Right! I like angst, but you can have a story where the character already knows they’re queer, and they’re like, “I already know I like girls, so I’m going to go hit on that girl.”
It’s okay to be queer and hopeful!
Yeah! And that’s what I want this series to be.
How did you decide to structure MagnifiqueNOIR as a novel/comic hybrid with multiple contributing artists?
I just love art... like, a lot. I used to read visual novels, so I thought, “What if I did that, but with my magical girls?”
We also have a lot of artist friends, and we like supporting indie artists.
One of the pieces of art that we got was from a friend who just wanted to support us. And I thought, “What if I got more art and put it in the book?” So that’s the structure I came up with. One day I would love it to be a comic, and a cartoon, and a movie, and everything possible...
Have people cosplay from it...
I’ve had two people do that!
Really?
Two people have done Prism Pink, and I cried both times. I made a complete embarrassment of myself and I didn’t even care, because... aww, that’s my girl!
Jessica, what lessons has cosplay taught you over the years and how do you avoid getting burned out?
I use cosplay as a way to like myself. Actually, a really good story for it is back in college, before I was doing major costumes, I had a cloak that I wore as a winter coat. I decided that, if people were going to think I was weird anyway because I was kind of a strange girl who helped run the anime club, I was going to look my type of strange. It was my coat and I didn’t care, and cosplay also basically became that. I feel more comfortable in a costume than I do in most clothing. I’ve made it to fit me, I know what I look like in it, and I can kind of control how people are going to react to me. So, it’s almost like a shield, but I really like it anyways. I especially like making costumes for other people that make them feel pretty. Convincing [Briana] that she’ll look good in a dress that she isn’t sure she can wear, or I’ve had a couple people where I’ve made their first dress before they start transitioning. That’s my absolute favorite part of making these outfits.
You’re both really involved in advocacy. Does that mostly happen through your panels, or are there other avenues you use?
It’s through everything!
Yeah, everything! I write a lot of articles, I post on Twitter a lot... but I also reached a point where I realized that I don’t have to address every issue. I talk about things when I can feel it, and usually I think, “Can I write an article about this?” to get all the words out cohesively.
Our table is very obviously queer—not just to market the books, but also to let people know that this is a safe space. If we’re at a con where there isn’t much queer merchandise, we tend to notice that we get a lot of queer congoers who come to our table just to have a place to talk and feel safe.
What have been some of your favorite moments from panels you’ve hosted?
Actually, I have one at this con. I was at a cosplay diversity panel—I wasn’t hosting it, but I was in the audience—and they were asking for examples of black characters in media. I was like, “My book characters!” And someone in the audience actually pulled out a copy of the books that they had bought while I was away from the table and said, “Yeah, look at the book!” And I thought, “Oh my god, thank you!” I’ve also had moments in panels where attendees have cried because they’re just happy to have the support. It happened at the LGBT panel—they were just so happy that it existed, and I hugged them. Moments like that really touch me. One of my favorite moments was in a diversity in writing panel, and there was a white guy there. He said, “Hi, I’m here to learn how to get off of Straight White Guy Island.”
Good for him!
And he just listened to the whole thing. There was another moment where a white guy came up and asked, “Are there any white characters in your book?” And I said, “No,” and he was like, “Good.” And then he bought the book!
Awesome! So, what new projects can we look forward to seeing from you two in the future?
I’m going to have an All Might ballgown! That’s the next cosplay idea. Book-wise, [MagnifiqueNOIR’s] second book just came out on Friday [January 10th], so we’re going to be promoting that. Jessica is writing the third book in our urban fantasy series [called Hunters], and we have plans for enamel pins. There’s also stuff that I can’t talk about, but I’m super excited for them once I get the okay to actually mention what they are.
And lastly, what has been one of the most rewarding parts of your career?
The look of comfort on people’s faces when they see that they’re not alone—like when it comes to queer stuff, or seeing another black or plus-size cosplayer. You know, there’s something really magical when someone comes to the booth and they say, “You actually represented me!” One of my favorite moments of all time was when my mom came to a couple cons with me and saw people react to my stuff. And she just got this look of, “You’re doing it! My baby’s doing the thing!” And she just looked so proud. She buys everything and reads everything. And I love seeing people who are comfortable with themselves, because I know what it’s like to not be comfortable, and sometimes I even feel like that now. But those are my favorite moments of all.
Well, thank you very much for taking time to talk to us, and I hope you have a great rest of your con!

Final Thoughts

Briana and Jessica are intelligent, bubbly, and great at what they do. With creativity as the basis of their relationship, they’ve built up a strong body of work together and inspired countless people to be magical every day. Be sure to check out their writing and cosplay, especially the second book of MagnifiqueNOIR that recently released! What did you think of our interview? Have you ever met Briana or Jessica at a convention? Have you read any of their books? Let us know in the comments, and thanks so much for reading!

Ghosts, magic, and doll-like girls always seem to be in mystery-themed anime like Gosick. Based on the popular light novel series, Gosick was the perfect anime for those who love all things mentioned above in one amazing series. Studio Bones truly pushed their talents to the limit when adapting Gosick as this series had wonderful animation/art that made every second watching it feel entrancing. Gosick could have gone well beyond 24 episodes but it made us want to read the light novels after so we can’t complain we didn’t get enough of the series. Follow young Kazuya Kujou as he embarks on a tale of strange ghost stories and supernatural mysteries in Gosick!

If we’ve learned anything from anime protagonists like Houtarou Oreki it would be that sometimes school can be exciting if you try different things. Hyouka followed our stoic main man as he entered the Classics Club where he meets Eru Chitanda and begins his hunt for all things strange and mysterious. As far as mystery series go, Hyouka was often more lighthearted and calming which made the tales within not too extravagant. If you love mystery anime but don’t want death-themed series or overly mature mystery narratives we think Hyouka is right up your alley!

5. Death Parade

Where do we go when we end our run on this Earth? This has easily been one of the longest-running unsolved mysteries in the world and the answer has eluded even the best minds. Death Parade by studio Madhouse might have the answers we desire but those answers aren’t what one would expect. Death Parade focuses on telling the tale of several individuals who find themselves trapped in a strange bar and are forced to play odd versions of games we know all too well. As the games go by, we—the viewers—begin to learn about the people locked in this otherworldly bar and soon we realize that these games aren’t for fun but to test the heart within each player. Death Parade constantly makes us question what the thin line is between right/wrong and often tries to trick us to root for the wrong people. Besides having one of the best openings in all of anime—seriously it’s that good—Death Parade was a mystery series we can watch a dozen times and still find new things we missed during previous views.

Imagine the world giving psychokinesis to a select few, what would those chosen do with such a power? In Shinsekai yori we see what would inevitably happen as those selected individuals cause literal world-changing events to occur, creating an alternative future so radically different that time almost seems to go backwards in human growth. Shinsekai yori is a strange series and often seems to test the minds of those watching it but that is what makes it such a great mystery series. How and why did the world undergo such a change and is the current land holding secrets from the new generation? These answers aren’t so simple in Shinsekai yori but taking the plunge and checking out this 25-episode series is quite easy to do!

At the apex of the 2010s, a very Groundhog’s Day themed anime aired called Durarara!! Rather than be a simple mystery series, Durarara!! has it all, action, supernatural themes, comedy, and of course, mystery. When we watching Durarara!! as it aired there were plenty of times we felt lost by the story being presented. As the series progressed and showed different perspectives for the large cast, Durarara!! became more about linking each narrative to a bigger picture. Studio Brain’s Base truly made a series for the ages and if you somehow missed out on Durarara!! you need to rectify that as soon as possible!

Boku dake ga Inai Machi earned its second place in our Top 10 Best Mystery Anime of the 2010s by being intriguing, filled with supernatural mystery, and having a truly compelling story of missed opportunities and attempts at fixing them. While there was a slew of supernatural elements such as time travel—a theme shared by the number one of our list—and seeing the future before it occurs, Boku dake ga Inai Machi never felt unrealistic and often made sure the mystery elements were the main focus. Test your sleuth skills and find out the mystery before the anime reveals it while watching Boku dake ga Inai Machi.

Taking our number one spot shouldn’t be a surprise for fans of the original series. Steins;Gate 0 was truly something incredible for those longing for more of Okabe Rintaro and the gang. Acting as an alternative ending—a canon one if you followed the original story—Steins;Gate 0 tugged at our heartstrings, crafting a mystery bigger than the first season and even darker. BEASTARS Introduction and Story

In a reality where anthropomorphic animals live civilized lives just like ours, differences between species unsurprisingly cause tension in society; especially relations between carnivores and herbivores. Tensions run even higher when Tem, a drama club student at Cherryton Academy, is predated upon by an unknown carnivore and killed. Also a member of the drama club, shy and anxious grey wolf Legoshi already feels self-conscious about his predatory features as it is—he’s always assumed to be suspicious just because he’s a wolf—and the latest murder makes it worse so he decides to lay low, trying not to make anyone uncomfortable, just becoming more and more insecure. This just makes Legoshi seem even more suspicious; especially when he seems to be stalking a female sheep when, really, all he wanted was to give her a letter that Tem had written for her, hoping to help Tem accomplish what he wasn’t able to in life. Legoshi gives the girl the letter and clears his name, at least for now. The night before the big performance, Tem needs to be replaced. Tem was a lead and a great actor so club president Louis—a beautiful, popular, stoic male red deer—wants to make sure to get the best replacement for the part. Louis rejects a carnivore who really wanted the part because all he does is mess up and the angry mongoose attacks Louis but Legoshi steps in and stops him, using his imposing size and strength to avoid a fight. This rubs Louis the wrong way because he feels that Legoshi should embrace his strength and power and stop being shy, which he tells to Legoshi’s face. Clearly, Louis has some issues of his own, to say the least. Tem’s replacement is not ready for the next day’s performance, so Louis decides to have an against-the-rules after-hours rehearsal at the school gym with Legoshi as the lookout. While on patrol, as he is sulking around inside his own head, he catches a whiff of something… a small herbivore! Afraid he might get expelled, Legoshi hides and spots a small silhouette. Thinking the possible witness might run away if he gives chase, Lugosi dashes towards the small animal who tries to run for its life. In just seconds, Legoshi is on top of a tiny female dwarf rabbit. Feeling his instincts kicking in after giving chase to what could have been his prey, he is confused and frightened and lets her go making sure he’s not seen. The small rabbit is Haru, and she has issues of her own. She’s tired of feeling small and looked down on by larger animals and seems to enjoy intimate relationships with her classmates because it makes her feel better about herself. Haru is ostracised and bullied by her peers for her liberal way of life but keeps to herself and cares for the rooftop garden on her own. When Legoshi discovers who the girl he almost ate was, he develops a confusing—and dangerous—attraction to Haru that pushes him way outside of his comfort zone just to be around her and try to take care of her. Throughout, we discover that Louis is seeing Haru but doesn’t seem to care for her as he has his own issues to deal with. Haru feels empty even with all her sexual escapades, and when Legoshi first comes to her, she assumes what he wants is sex like everyone else. Of course, Legoshi isn’t like that and leaves her be, sparking an interest in the unusual male. Legoshi’s feelings grow stronger but, are they love? or carnivore instinct? Chasing answers to these questions leads the grey wolf into all kinds of problems. As the series progresses, we learn more about the society in BEASTARS and how it is set up so that carnivores and herbivores can coexist peacefully, as well as what challenges each species faces in said society. Specifically, we follow Legoshi, Haru, and Louis, three characters unhappy with their lot in life, striving to find who they really are, a place they belong, and maybe a little bit of love.

Why You Should Watch BEASTARS

1. The Unique Set-up

The worldbuilding in BEASTARS is very well thought-out. From hens selling their eggs to feed carnivores to keep them healthy—and from eating other animals—to a black market where carnivores can eat the way their nature dictates and which gives a space for shady things to happen, most of the questions you may have about how a society like this would be viable will be answered. It is a fully fleshed-out world that has obviously been created with much attention to detail.

2. A Furry Black Mirror

As mentioned previously, just because the characters are cute and cuddly-looking, it doesn’t mean BEASTARS is a fluffy anime. In fact, it’s almost like a Black Mirror episode with anthropomorphic animals. It reflects many issues we currently face in the world like discrimination, violence, crime, abuse of power, bullying, and even anxiety and depression. It’s hard to imagine one could identify with any of these creatures in this fantasy setting, but odds are, if you watch BEASTARS, the characters and the way their situations are portrayed will tug at your heartstrings and make you think about the way we live.

3. It’s Beautiful

This almost goes without saying but the character design and overall art style in Beastars fit it perfectly. The characters are beautifully drawn and very expressive, and the art is a bit dark and grungy, which adds to the atmosphere. Even the opening and ending themes are like mini works of art, with the former being a stop motion short telling the Beastars story. Even the CG looks great!

[ad_middle class="mt40"]
Why You Should Skip BEASTARS

1. Not for the Faint of Heart

As mentioned above, there is murder and violence and deep emotional and social themes in BEASTARS so if you’re looking for a feel-good, cuddly anime to relax with or watch with the kids, this is probably not it. BEASTARS is not a giggly walk around the zoo.

Final Thoughts

Unsurprisingly, BEASTARS ended up at the top of the anime charts for 2019. With its memorable worldbuilding, story, and relatable characters, BEASTARS is an anime that really stood out to us in 2019. What did you think of BEASTARS? Are you reading the manga? Let us know in the comments! Till next time! Nya~!

As we have shared in previous articles, we feel that the action genre is what best expresses the creativity of anime. While action sequences in Hollywood, Hong Kong, and Thai films all offer something cool, it’s just that anime knows how to use the power of the imagination in animation to give the audience something more. This goes back to the rise of action anime in the eighties and that notion continues to this day. 2019 was another year of adrenaline-pumping anime and we thought we’d share our Top 5 Anime Anime of 2019!

5. One Punch Man 2nd Season

[en][information_general item1 = "Episodes" content1="12" item2="Aired" content2="April 10, 2019 – July 3, 2019" post_id=""][/en]
[es][information_general item1 = "Episodios" content1="___content1___" item2="Emisión" content2="___content2___" post_id=""][/es]

While we understand that many fans aren’t fond of the change in animation studios, the second season is still very much in the spirit of what the first season and the original manga are all about, comedy and action. Considering the nature of One Punch Man, audiences are guaranteed non-stop fighting. Thanks to its large cast of heroes and villains, we’re provided a variety of exciting action scenes. As for Saitama, the series appropriately uses him for most of the comedy as he fights in a martial arts tournament (while impersonating another character) in order to win some money. With the introduction of Garo, the anti-villain of season 2, audiences are treated to some wild fights until he has to go toe-to-toe with Saitama!

4. Kengan Ashura

[en][information_general item1 = "Episodes" content1="24" item2="Aired" content2="July 31, 2019 – October 31, 2019" post_id=""][/en]
[es][information_general item1 = "Episodios" content1="___content1___" item2="Emisión" content2="___content2___" post_id=""][/es]

If you love pure hand-to-hand combat without powerups and/or energy attacks, then Kengan Ashura is the anime for you! It’s the ultimate throwback to a pre-MMA world where fighters of various styles fight in unsanctioned tournaments to prove who’s the very best (like no one ever was)! However, the fights in Kengan Ashura are about how Fortune 500 companies acquire other companies. Imagine, for example, that Disney and Fox choose fighters to represent them. If Disney’s fighter wins, then Disney takes Fox and there’s nothing that the courts and politicians can do to stop them! Putting the cut-throat business aspects aside, the series still provides consistent high-octane action! There’s an old saying in combat sports that styles make fights, and this anime does a great job of implementing that for something new in each fight. If you want action that combines technique, strength, speed, intelligence, and an adrenaline rush, then Kengan Ashura is it!

[ad_middle class="mb40"]

3. Shingeki no Kyojin Season 3 Part 2 (Attack on Titan Season 3 Part 2)

[en][information_general item1 = "Episodes" content1="10" item2="Aired" content2="April 29, 2019 – July 1, 2019" post_id=""][/en]
[es][information_general item1 = "Episodios" content1="___content1___" item2="Emisión" content2="___content2___" post_id=""][/es]

What makes the action of Attack on Titan special is that it takes the classic tale of David Vs. Goliath and injects it with steroids for something full of danger and excitement! However, it’s not just the intensity of the action that makes this series appealing, but the emotional impact behind them as well. Like Game of Thrones, you never know who’s likely to die, and part 2 of season 3 takes it ten steps further! When it comes to the battles in Attack on Titan, they have to be planned and executed carefully. Any small missteps can cost a soldier their life or the plan could fall apart! In some instances, the plan directly requires sacrifices as the Scout Corps has to fight Zeke, the Beast Titan! As the series mixes strategy and throwing caution into the wind, it provides battles like no other!

2. Vinland Saga

[en][information_general item1 = "Episodes" content1="24" item2="Aired" content2=" July 8, 2019 – December 30, 2019" post_id=""][/en]
[es][information_general item1 = "Episodios" content1="___content1___" item2="Emisión" content2="___content2___" post_id=""][/es]

Vinland Saga is the coming-of-age story of Thorfinn, the orphaned son of an elite Viking who grows up to be a vicious warrior so he can one day kill Askeladd, the man who killed his father. If you thought Vikings and anime didn’t mix, then Vinland Saga is here to prove you wrong! The action masterfully balances the speed and intensity that anime is known for with the size and strength of the Vikings for some carnage and guts. However, when you see Thorfinn duel with Askeladd, the series does a great job of portraying that fighting is more mental than physical as Askeladd gets under Thorfinn’s skin by evoking the memory of his father. Beyond the brutal violence, the fact that Vinland Saga shows the mental/emotional part of battle is what makes it worthy of acknowledgment on this list.

1. JoJo No Kimyou na Bouken Part 5: Ougon no Kaze (JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind)

[en][information_general item1 = "Episodes" content1="39" item2="Aired" content2="October 6, 2018 – July 28, 2019" post_id=""][/en]
[es][information_general item1 = "Episodios" content1="___content1___" item2="Emisión" content2="___content2___" post_id=""][/es]

At number one, we have to give it to part 5 of Hirohiko Araki’s long-running epic, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure. The JoJo saga is highly reputable for its distinguishing fights and this edition does an excellent job of not only maintaining that reputation, but advancing it too. Thanks to the inclusion of stands (which have been around since part 3), the series manages to effectively portray unpredictable action sequences that are next to impossible to put into words. Not only do the abilities of each individual character come into play, so do other factors such as the environment and other conditions like how many people are present, etc. From start to finish, viewers are at the edge of their seats not knowing what’s going to happen next. One second you think one guy has the upper hand when, in fact, it could be the opposite! Due to its non-stop intensity (along with the use of psychedelic colors in the animation and some awesome music), this is a must-see for action lovers!
