Who doesn’t love a good martial arts anime series? Ranma 1/2, Naruto, Baki, Hokuto no Ken, and the recent The God of High School are series chock full of punches and kicks to make anyone feel as if they are truly in a fight themselves! Here at Honey’s Anime, we love all things under the martial arts genre and have realized that it has inspired us to do more than just sit down and binge the entirety of Dragon Ball Z or Hajime no Ippo. Watching these incredible action series has made us enter the world of martial arts in various ways and we’d love to share that concept with you readers out there.

Improve Oneself

Any good martial artist out there will tell you that learning self-defense isn’t just so you can beat down bullies or win over the hearts of the opposite sex. Training in the ways of martial arts improves the mind, body, and spirit to achieve new heights of self-awareness. The beauty of anime is that many fans who feel that they are lacking in some way, decide to take up different martial art forms—such as Kempo, Aikido, Taekwondo and Jeet Kune Do—and become stronger through dedication and perseverance. Many of us wouldn’t have sought these paths in life had we not fallen in love with martial arts anime.

Giving Up? Heck No!

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="NEOGDS-107744" text="" url="" ]

As silly as martial arts anime can be sometimes with their usually corny lines of becoming stronger no matter what or winning at all costs, these lines are actually empowering. Ippo Makunouchi from Hajime no Ippo is an excellent boxer and wins several fights throughout the series but he equally gets beaten quite a bit too. Yet, Ippo teaches us that giving up isn’t the way to be in life. If you dedicate yourself to improving in life, then you will in turn become a stronger individual capable of overcoming any challenge. Martial arts anime has given us the strength to never surrender and always try again if we fall in life.

New Challenges

The recent WEBTOON adaptation of The God of High School is pretty crazy in the way martial arts is used but there is one element that stands out above all else. Often, we face our own fears in life—like Mi-Ra Yu and her fear of letting her father’s sword style phase out of existence—and that debilitates us. However, if we learn from the characters in The God of High School then we quickly realize even if the odds seem against us, we can’t give up! Challenging oneself is what helps us grow and become ever stronger, like we mentioned above. In the end, martial arts anime reminds us that while accepting new challenges can be scary, what’s even worse is letting those fears overcome us before we even face them.

Protect Yourself and Others

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="crunchyroll" url="http://www.crunchyroll.com/my-hero-academia/episode-28-midoriya-and-shigaraki-740983" ]

Martial arts—no matter the style you take—isn’t meant to just unleash katas and moves on other people. The idea of martial arts is self-defense and that means just that; defend yourself. In the world of anime, many shows like Dragon Ball Z, Shijou Saikyou no Deshi Kenichi, and Boku no Hero Academia teach us that if we must fight we do it for a cause and for reason. We don’t condone fighting here at Honey’s Anime but equally standing by and allowing others to get hurt or allowing yourself to get beaten isn’t the way of martial arts. Martial arts anime might be fictional works but in our lives, we are reminded that fighting sometimes is necessary.

Final Thoughts

Martial Arts anime has given us entertainment but also the drive to go above and beyond in life. There are many times where we’ve heard stories of anime viewers remembering their favorite martial artist in an anime and taking their strength in when they were at their lowest. That to us is the impressive nature behind a good martial arts series, the ability to make you want to stand up and train like never before! Have you readers experienced that feeling we mentioned? Let us know in the comments! Be sure to stick to our dojo-like hive here at Honey’s Anime for even more articles!

Let’s Celebrate Bandori’s Global Version 2nd Year Anniversary Together!

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="" url=""]

Throughout the years, several projects from Japan have increased in popularity overseas. BanG Dream! Girls Band Party is no exception, and it’s not really hard to see why: the music, the characters, the voice actresses… Everything about the whole franchise is great! This year, the global version of the game is celebrating its second anniversary, and Bushiroad USA, Inc. thought it was a good idea to collaborate with one of Los Angeles’ most popular coffee shops, coming up with Bandori-themed menus that fans could purchase to show their love and support for this franchise. These special menus came each with a doughnut, a coaster, and a band-themed latte. Needless to say, the latte art was gorgeous, and the doughnuts were really colorful, perfectly representing the bands and what they’re all about. While Poppin’ Party’s doughnut was bright pink and full of sprinkles, Roselia’s had a nice rose made from whipped cream in the middle; Hello Happy World’s was bright yellow, Afterglow’s red with black sprinkles, and Pastel*Palettes’ was aquamarine decorated with some flowers. With all the nice treats, it’s no surprise every fan was eager to grab hold of this special menu, but there were more treats in store for the lucky people who got to buy one of the three available menus. With their purchase, every customer received an Online Cafe Admission, which was used to enter a special livestream event. And what's so special about it? Well… Ayasa Ito and Aimi, who voice Arisa Ichigaya and Kasumi Toyama, respectively, were the special guests joining the lucky fans!

Having a Kira Kira Doki Doki Time

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="" url=""]

It was time for the event to start, so everyone was nervous and excited. Some were holding their plushies and penlights, some others were cosplaying as their favorite characters, but all of them were ultimately creating a great atmosphere for what was about to take place. After a brief talk, Aimi and Ayasa were introduced, smiling and waving, surprised by the number of people that were participating. Aimi, as energetic as the character she voices, took it upon herself to make sure that everyone was having a Kira Kira Doki Doki Time from the very beginning.... although it’s difficult not to when both of them are so nice and full of energy! Both Aimi and Ayasa agreed that PoPiPa’s doughnut looked pretty and colorful and that the latte art was cool; they also wished they could have one! When shown a picture of Cafe Dulce, located in Little Tokyo, the girls were really surprised because it looks like a Japanese coffee shop. Aimi decided that she’s going to visit Cafe Dulce the next time she goes to the United States, so maybe Ayasa will tag along?

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="" url=""]

Then, it was time for a special quiz session; all the questions had to do with Los Angeles, so Ayasa was scared she wouldn’t be able to answer them correctly. If only she had been warned beforehand, she could have studied! Oh, but there was nothing to worry about; we were there to help them answer these questions! A special background was available during the event, and fans could change its color according to the answer they thought was the right one. With this extra help, they managed to answer the first six questions correctly, winning some sweets from Cafe Dulce for the next time they visit Los Angeles. But we know Aimi and Ayasa, so of course, they wanted to go for the big prize: hamburgers! With all of us on their side, the girls got the other four questions right, and, with that, victory and hamburgers were theirs to claim.

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="" url=""]

After that, Aimi and Ayasa took the time to answer some questions the fans had submitted when they registered for the event. This way, we got to learn that Aimi’s favorite song to perform live is “Kizuna Music” because it conveys Poppin’ Party’s spirit, while Ayasa’s favorite song to perform is “Teardrops” because it makes every member of the band look cool. They also shared some of their best memories together: Ayasa was really grateful that time she regretted dying her hair, but Aimi said she looked cute. On the other hand, Aimi told a story about the time she and Ayasa had a sleepover. They were also asked about what they like the most about the characters they voice. Ayasa pointed out she really likes how Arisa is a tsundere who always speaks her mind, while Aimi said she likes how Kasumi gets along with everyone, and that she wishes to be more like her. After having so much fun together, it was time to say goodbye. We were all sad that it was over, but at the same time, we felt like we really did have a sparkling time. Aimi thanked everyone and said she had a lot of fun, and that she’s really looking forward to visiting Los Angeles to have some coffee and doughnuts at Cafe Dulce. Ayasa was really happy that everyone had a great time, which in turn made her happy. And, of course, she also looks forward to visiting Los Angeles!

Encore! Encore! Encore!

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="" url=""]

We’re sure all fans had more questions for them that they didn’t get the chance to ask, but fortunately, they answered a couple more questions after the livestream. Upon being asked about it, they both said this was their first online event, and they were really happy that the fans were so welcoming and nice. Ayasa was so excited about being able to see how the guests’ rooms looked like! Since BanG Dream! is a Japanese franchise, they weren’t expecting it to make that much of an impact overseas, but Aimi was super happy to know so many people support them around the globe. In fact, Ayasa said it’s crazy to see people from other parts of the world cosplaying! Minutes later, they talked about their growth as musicians, with Ayasa pointing out that Aimi got a lot better at conveying her feelings and emotions while performing. She said she’d like to cover one of Billie Eilish’s songs, too!

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="" url=""]

Apparently, both Aimi and Ayasa want to learn how to play the drums, too! While Aimi believes she’d be able to support the band from behind, Ayasa thinks playing the drums would give her freedom to move her arms around while performing... so maybe that means Ohashi-san can get to dance and sing if they switch places? And since the event was centered around a coffee shop, it was only natural for us to ask what Ayasa and Aimi’s favorite desserts or sweets are, right? Well, Ayasa has a sweet tooth, so she really loves them all, but if she had to pick only one, it’d definitely be pancakes. Aimi, however, said she likes french toasts because you can make those yourself. Nice choices!

Final Thoughts

We know a lot of expos and conventions have been delayed or canceled due to the current Covid-19 pandemic, but regardless, we truly hope more online events like this will be held in the future. For us, it was a great opportunity to learn more about Aimi and Ayasa, but also to spend some quality time with other BanG Dream! Girls Band Party enthusiasts around the world. Looking forward to more Kira Kira Doki Doki Time together!

You know us, always looking for new BL manga to fill the emptiness inside our hearts. It’s no easy task to find the perfect story, with a good balance between art, narrative, and characters, but once we find that, it’s like a song to our souls. Kimi ni Ienai Koto ga Aru (There Are Things I Can’t Tell You) by Edako Mofumofu is one of those stories that will make your heart melt, ache, and dance around while reading it, and we’ll tell you why!

It Always Starts With Childhood Friends

Kyosuke has always been there for Kasumi, helping him through middle school and high school. Although they were so different, somehow their friendship seemed to work, but as days went by, they started to drift apart. After a high school reunion, these two friends start hanging out again. For a moment, it seems like they can go back to the way things were before, but Kyosuke knows that’s not possible: his feelings for Kasumi are in the way, and it would be hard for him to act like nothing’s going on. At the same time, he’s also concerned about the way Kasumi has been acting, dating a taken woman. To help his childhood friend, he introduces Kasumi to another lady, only to have his friend run away from the restaurant! Apparently, he didn’t appreciate being set up by Kyousuke…

Mofumofu Sure Knows How to Make the Stories Soft

Mofumofu is a Japanese onomatopoeia used for things that are “soft to the touch.” Bad puns aside, There Are Things I Can’t Tell You is a really soft story to the eyes, and to the heart. The relationship between Kyosuke and Kasumi is pure and heartbreaking at the same time. We can understand Kyosuke’s pain, having a lot of things to say but putting his friendship with Kasumi first, deciding to keep everything that he feels a secret. Of course, Kyosuke is not the only one struggling; Kasumi also has things that he can’t say, and he doesn’t know how to keep them quiet anymore. Kasumi is a soft-spoken, shy guy with a reserved personality, always sitting in a corner to avoid being the center of attention. Kyosuke, on the other hand, is the complete opposite. He’s loud, energetic, and has always been really popular, like a magnet attracting people towards him. Opposites indeed attract, but will it be the case for these two?

Art and Story Go hand in Hand

There are a few things to take into consideration before picking up a BL manga. Maybe the premise is interesting enough, but is the narrative good? Are there enough sexy or romantic scenes? Do we like the art style? With There Are Things I Can’t Tell You, that’s easy to know: all we have to do is take a look at the cover! The way that the characters are drawn brings out everything about them. With Kasumi, it emphasizes his dorky side, with his blank expressions moments after he wakes up or the longing in his eyes when he looks at Kyosuke. On the other hand, Kyosuke looks like a confident man while bringing out his stylish side. From Kasumi’s bed hair to Kyosuke’s piercings, every detail conveys their personalities.

Final Thoughts

There Are Things I Can’t Tell You is a beautifully drawn, short BL manga with two adorkable main characters who try to feel close to each other again. Both Kasumi and Kyosuke have things they can’t bring themselves to say out loud, but their actions make the other one understand what they’re going through. This story needs more chapters!

Illegal Sharing Sites KissAnime and KissManga Among First to Feel the Effect of Stricter Japanese Copyright Laws

[en]What You Need to Know: [/en][es]Lo que necesitas saber: [/es]

  • As of August 15th, 2020, pirate sharing sites KissAnime and KissManga have been shut down.
  • This officially happened after an announcement on KissAnime's Discord warned its members that their beta servers had been taken down and that it may lead to the closing of the site. Just 4 hours later, a new message confirmed the shutdown announcing all files had been taken down by copyright holders and that the website would sut down forever, thanking users for years of support.
  • KissAnime and KissManga had been making available official and unofficial subs and scanalations for almost 10 years and they surely will not be the last pirate site to be taken down.
  • This comes as Japan passed an amendmet to their copyright laws, making them much much stricter by enacting a revised copyright law that will now expand to "punish those who knowingly download illegally uploaded or pirated manga, magazines, and academic works."
  • The law also regulates “leech websites” which direct users to torrent links and other P2P sharing. The revised law for donloads goes into effect on January 1, 2021 , while restrictions on leech sites go into effect October 1st. Penalties for repeat offenders of illegal downloads will be up to two years in prison and/or a 2 million yen fine. Penalties for illegal sites include up to five years in prison and/or a 5 million yen fine.
  • Interestingly, Crunchyroll was an illegal fansub site much like KissAnime until 2008 when they became legit. It is expected that many other pirate sites will soon follow. We will keep you updated as info becomes available!

BTS: Blood, Sweat, & Tears Introduction

BTS: Blood, Sweat, & Tears is a new biography about one of the most famous bands in the world - BTS. BTS has found success far beyond the reaches of any K-pop before them, with fans all around the world. While K-pop has become increasingly popular outside of South Korea, never before has a band achieved the recognition and fame that BTS has. BTS: Blood, Sweat, & Tears is a biography written entirely in English for foreign fans of this K-pop band, detailing the band’s rise from a brand new group in a competitive scene to one of the most internationally recognisable groups of our time. It explores the timeline of BTS, has details about all of the members, highlights important points about each album and song they have produced, discusses the phenomenon of the BTS Army (the fans), and more. It also has quite a few pictures both of BTS performing as well as photoshoot sessions. At 157 pages long, BTS: Blood, Sweat, & Tears is a thorough book that covers just about everything you can imagine about BTS, and author Tamar Herman delivers it all in a clear, concise, and non-biased style that reads very professionally. On the flip side, many fans have voiced complaints online about BTS: Blood, Sweat, & Tears before it was even released due to it not being an official and endorsed product. But before we get into that, let’s check out our pros and cons for BTS: Blood, Sweat, & Tears!

Discussion Time

Why You Should Read BTS: Blood, Sweat, & Tears

1. Learn the Ins and Outs of the Industry

One of the most interesting things about BTS: Blood, Sweat, & Tears is that it not only teaches you a lot about BTS themselves, but also about the K-pop industry as a whole. The book does a great job explaining the differences between what being a K-pop idol in Korea and abroad are, the evolution of K-pop as an international genre, and how groups succeed and fail in the competitive and ever-changing industry. For fans of K-pop as a genre or interested in learning more about its impact in the music scene, seeing these insights throughout the book are really cool. Of course, BTS: Blood, Sweat, & Tears is always focused directly on BTS themselves and their role within the world of K-pop, but that doesn’t mean you can’t also pick up some other interesting factoids along the way. BTS: Blood, Sweat, & Tears also looks at how BTS has affected the international music scene and their expansion beyond popularity in just Korea and a niche market abroad. For anyone interested in this phenomenon, it’s worth reading the book!

2. Lose Yourself in All Things BTS

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="VIZ Media" url="https://www.viz.com/read/book/blood-sweat-tears-bts-their-music/product/6380/paperback" ]

It goes without saying that one of the main reasons anyone would be interested in grabbing a copy of BTS: Blood, Sweat, & Tears is that they want to learn more about BTS! And BTS: Blood, Sweat, & Tears is a wonderful resource for learning everything possible about the band. Often, K-pop can be inaccessible for English-speaking audiences as far as getting official goods and information, but BTS has successfully been bridging that gap and bringing K-pop to an international audience. BTS: Blood, Sweat, & Tears is also doing just that by being a source of information, photos, and stories - in English! - for BTS fans around the world. Rather than relying on poorly translated Korean sources or fan-written articles, BTS: Blood, Sweat, & Tears is a published book written in a professional manner. BTS fans can’t get enough of the group, and BTS: Blood, Sweat, & Tears is something new and special to check out. It likely has information that they have never seen before, along with new photos. Not only is it a great piece of merchandise to display in a BTS collection, but it’s full of stories that BTS fans will enjoy reading as they make the journey from zero to hero along with their favourite band.

Why You Should Skip BTS: Blood, Sweat & Tears
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="VIZ Media" url="https://www.viz.com/read/book/blood-sweat-tears-bts-their-music/product/6380/paperback" ]

1. It’s Text-Heavy

If you’re looking for a photobook of BTS, you’re looking in the wrong place. BTS: Blood, Sweat, & Tears is solidly a biography, so first and foremost, its a lot of information to digest. A lot of the pages are very text-heavy with no pictures at all. There’s a lot of information to sift through if you’re looking for something specific, and if you’re just interested in short and fun anecdotes about BTS, look elsewhere. For someone wanting to truly learn about the band, their origins, and story, it’s great; but if you just want a fun, light read full of pictures and fanservice, BTS: Blood, Sweat, & Tears isn’t the right book for you.

2. It’s Unofficial

It’s important to keep in mind that BTS: Blood, Sweat, & Tears is not an official product that is made by the band, but rather a biography written by a well-known journalist. In the past, Tamar is known for not always shedding a positive light on the BTS Army and on the band themselves. This can be a big deterrent against buying the book and is one that must be respected as it is any fan’s choice whether or not they want to support Tamar’s product. The book has been written in a very straightforward and professional manner, but keeping in mind that, as an unofficial product, it may contain the bias and opinions of the author is still important, too.

Final Thoughts

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="VIZ Media" url="https://www.viz.com/read/book/blood-sweat-tears-bts-their-music/product/6380/paperback" ]

BTS: Blood, Sweat, & Tears is an interesting piece for BTS fans to add to their collection, even if they just read it slowly. It has the band’s background and origin story, their rise to success, profiles on each member, and even breakdowns of the meanings behind the lyrics of nearly all of their songs. And its got quite a few great pictures along the way, too! BTS: Blood, Sweat, & Tears also walks readers through the wider BTS Universe, the complicated storyline that is told through BTS’s songs, social media, webtoons, and more. BTS is more than just a music group; they’re a multimedia phenomenon, and BTS: Blood, Sweat, & Tears explains everything in a way that is easy for anyone to understand. While its main audience is likely going to be superfans of BTS, its information is presented in a clear and easy to read in a way that even a new fan of the band who wants to learn more can understand. While not every fan loves Tamar’s work, as a piece of informative literature, BTS: Blood, Sweat, & Tears is done well; it’s written in an unbiased format that presents information coherently and clearly. It’s not a book of fanservice, but it is a thorough biography about BTS, accomplishing what the book set out to do. Not everything is about steamy sex and uncensored goodness. We sometimes like to enjoy a nicely paced story where a group of boys learns and grows together. Koimonogatari: Love Stories is a BL manga by Tohru Tagura that shows that you can find friendship and love in the most unexpected ways. Of course, it’s not that easy for the main characters of this story to let go of all their worries and fears, but they definitely try their best!

A Tale Of Camaraderie

Something seems off about Yamato: his smiles appear to be fake, and it looks like he’s hiding something. He is always surrounded by people, but at the same time, he’s not that close to them. When Yuji notices this, he starts paying more attention to his classmate, trying to figure out why Yamato looks sad and guilty even when he’s smiling. One day, Yuji overhears Yamato talking to Natsume, a girl from their class, and everything starts making sense. Now he knows Yamato is gay, Yuji understands that this quiet boy is in love with Kyousuke, Yuji’s best friend since middle school. Torn between not wanting to get involved and being ready to intervene if Yamato decides to make a move on Kyousuke, Yuji decides to tell his classmate that he found out about his secret. Yamato is surprised as Yuji doesn’t seem to be disgusted, always willing to hear him out whenever he’s troubled. And so it begins, a strange relationship—not quite a friendship in the beginning—constantly changing as Yamato and Yuji spend more time together, learning things about each other.

The Perfect Pacing

In Koimonogatari, every character has a personality, a background, and a reason to behave the way they do. And we're not only talking about Yamato and Yuji, the main characters, but the supporting cast too. Instead of going for the in-your-face approach, Koimonogatari takes the time to make you actually care about the characters and their struggles. It sucks you in, and you'll find yourself always craving for another page... and another one. Will Yamato ever be able to stop feeling guilty? Will Yuji always be there for him? If you're only interested in the hot side of things, however, you'll have a hard time as this is not a sex-focused manga...

You’re Not Alone

At the beginning of the story, Yamato is both reluctant and scared to even suggest he’s hiding a secret from his closest friends. He soon learns that he can trust the people around them, and so Yamato becomes more and more confident, trusting Yuji to keep his secret and help him out when he’s stressed out. But he’s not the only one who discovers that friendship is a powerful thing. Yuji begins to open up a little more, leaving his comfort zone, becoming friends with some of his classmates, and hanging out with them. Let’s not forget about Akito, a boy who’s also gay and who becomes friends with Yamato in cram school. Anyone would say Akito lives his sexuality freely, but in reality, he’s scared of being rejected by his friends. For that reason, Akito keeps his sexual preferences a secret. He might look and act tough, but he finds comfort in knowing that Yamato is just like him, knowing he can trust him if he ever needs help.

Final Thoughts

Koimonogatari: Love Stories' art is notably pretty and fluffy, but the story is far from being corny. It’s not easy for Yamato to accept himself as a gay man, always hiding his true feelings, so there's a lot of angst involved. Fortunately, it seems like he has really nice friends who are more than willing to help him and hear him out. To be honest with you, we like our BL stories a little bit more spicy and raunchy, but we won’t complain about this one. Pure love is like a breath of fresh air for our rotten souls!

Non-profit Organization Is Dedicated to Educating the Public About Japanese Animation and Pop Culture

[en]What You Need to Know: [/en][es]Lo que necesitas saber: [/es]

  • THE SOCIETY FOR THE PROMOTION OF JAPANESE ANIMATION (SPJA) is excited to unveil several changes to the organization as it continues to define its presence in and its commitment to the Japanese animation and pop culture community. Best known for hosting North America’s largest celebration of Japanese pop culture, Anime Expo, in addition to Anime Expo Lite, Project Anime and World Cosplay Summit USA, today SPJA announces its new tax status and launches its new website featuring a redesigned logo.
  • SPJA is constantly looking for ways to strengthen and optimize its position as a non-profit institution focused on Japanese animation and related Japanese culture. In doing so, and to maximize its ability to serve that mission, the organization began the transition from a 501(c)(6) trade association to a 501(c)(3) charitable and educational organization last year. The change of status was officially approved by the Internal Revenue Service on May 12, 2020, with the new status effective retroactively to SPJA’s operations as of January 1, 2020.
  • “We firmly believe this new c3 status better aligns with SPJA’s current structure, activities, and mission and will allow us to aid our work and achieve our goal of increasing appreciation and understanding of Japanese animation and pop culture.”

Ray Chiang, President & CEO, SPJA

  • The redesigned SPJA website www.spja.org features a new logo which shifts away from the use of the organization’s full name to a stylized logo using its acronym SPJA. Additionally, the website features more robust and relevant content, information about SPJA’s portfolio of events, Board of Directors and Team profiles, as well as vibrant images.
  • “As we move into our 30th year, we want our organization, at all levels, to reflect our passion and commitment to promoting awareness of and appreciation for Japanese culture. With the launch of our new logo, our acronym will become the primary way in which we refer to ourselves. On our new, more user-friendly website, our fans can get to know a little bit more about the team that works hard day-after-day to bring the best of Japanese pop culture to communities across the world.”

Introduction

Everybody has their own stuff to inherit from their parents. It could be material hand me downs, priceless life lessons, tons of wealth, or humongous amount of debt. Unfortunately, not everybody is born sucking a silver spoon. Some were born sucking a rotting dog’s toenails. Add in the wicked imagination of a mangaka and an opportunity to make the saddest, darnest story, and here we are sitting for the next few hours digesting the first volume of Chainsaw Man.

[signSpoiler] [ad_top2 class="mt40"]

Discussion Time

The strongest, coolest superheroes always have a cool backstory. For example, sending the only remaining child of a dying planet down to Earth. And it just so happened that that child is insanely strong, can fly, and can send energies out of their bodies. Yeah, that’s basically both Superman and Goku. For Denji, the titular chainsaw man, his starting point is nowhere near that grand. He was merely forced to form a contract with a dying devil, his pet devil-dog Pochita. After the contract, Pochita allowed him to use it like a chainsaw to do menial tasks and kill other devils. However, when he was betrayed and literally got chopped up by the Yakuza, Pochita made another contract with him, which then led to the birth of the Chainsaw Man.

Why You Should Read Chainsaw Man, Vol. 1
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="viz" url="https://www.viz.com/read/manga/chainsaw-man-volume-1/product/6419" ]

1. A Story That Made Us Craving For More

Chainsaw Man started off light. We’re not kidding you guys, but the series literally opened with Denji talking about how much he made from selling one of his balls. However, just when we were under the impression that the series will make us laugh our asses off, the story took a sudden dark turn. Denji’s backstory was revealed. His father committed suicide, which left a huge amount of debt to his name. Not only that, he was indebted to the yakuza. Heck, Denji and Pochita’s first encounter was when they were both on the verge of death. After reading that, we just couldn’t help it but crave for more.

2. A Plot Darker Than Dark Chocolate

As we’ve already said, Denji had more than one encounter with death. Heck, even when he was pondering about his earning from selling one of his balls has a dark side to it. Just to pay a small fragment of his debt, he was forced to sell one of his nuts, eyes, and kidney. The punchline may be good, but the context sure is heavy. In addition to that, Denji even had to die just to awaken his badass chainsaw powers. Although, that one is probably worth it after what he gained post- transformation.

[ad_middle class="mt40"]
Why You Should Skip Chainsaw Man, Vol. 1

1. Chill-inducing Gore

Not everybody likes reading humans get mutilated, and Chainsaw Man doesn’t lack that. Given that the premise of the manga is humans hunting devils and vice versa, there are enough gory scenes to last us for a few weeks. These scenes were not even censored or something. In fact, there is even a panel featuring a chopped up Denji, decapitated head included. If you are the type with a bit of a sensitive stomach, then skipping this one might be a good option.

Final Thoughts

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="viz" url="https://www.viz.com/chainsaw-man" ]

Chainsaw Man definitely came in strong. Although we can’t speak for the entire series from the first volume alone, we’re definitely left craving for more. We were left wondering what happened next. The story has a perfect mixture of light and dark that spices the series a whole lot more. More so, the bond between Denji and his devil-dog Pochita made us want to snuggle our pets, although making a contract with any sort of devil is surely not recommended.

Introduction

Pokemon has been a big chunk of our childhood. Well, at least for those in my age range. Pokemon has always successfully hit the market with a bang. The series, movies, games, merch, and everything else Pokemon related are a sure hit to the masses. Even today, that kind of hype has actually never ended. We mean, who doesn’t like catching ‘em all, right? That said, the very first Pokemon movie, Pokemon: The First Movie, has successfully hit the fan base during the initial grand hype. Just last year, it was given a CGI touch and made it more techy and modern.

[signSpoiler] [ad_top2 class="mt40"]

Discussion Time

Taking a lot of steps back into the fandom, there was a time wherein everybody believed without a doubt that the strongest Pokemon was either Mew or Mewtwo. Reasonably enough, that was what we are made to believe. Revisiting such concepts definitely brings back memories. All that said, reading this manga gives us another wave of nostalgia. Of course, that doesn’t mean only the old-timers like us can enjoy it. After all, Pokemon has always been a franchise for all ages. It’s actually more of a good first step into the fandom.

Why You Should Read Pokemon: Mewtwo Strikes Back--Evolution
[sourceLink asin="1974715523" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]

1. Movie in Manga Form

This manga actually follows the movie. It aims to provide the readers with another form of enjoying the content that the movie has originally shown. On that aspect, the manga has given all sorts of justice the movie deserves. The story flows as naturally as it can be. Also, the perk of being able to take our own pace to digest the dialogue and story perfectly fits in. On that note, we are also given the chance to go back a few pages and reminisce about the looks of our favorite characters. Yes, Togepi included.

2. Seeing All the Classic Favorites

It is an undeniable fact that Pikachu and Ash have traveled for a very, very long time. We’ve grown hair all over our bodies, and Ash is still yet to catch ‘em all. During that journey, he has also met and parted ways with a lot of friends, pokemon, and humans alike. Yes, none of those people were really hateful or that sort. It’s just that the original will always hold a special place in our hearts and seeing them having the spotlight all to themselves for another time is definitely something for us to be happy about.

[ad_middle class="mt40"]
Why You Should Skip Pokemon: Mewtwo Strikes Back--Evolution

1. A Series That Could Be a Tad Bit Too Late

The original Pokemon: The First Movie came out more than two decades ago. Yes, the remake just came out a year ago, but still, a manga based on that movie won’t sit well with everyone. And maybe, it shouldn’t really sit well for everyone. As the saying goes, “To each his own.” Some might think that this manga is just another attempt to wring more money out of our pockets, and maybe they’re right. On the other hand, there’s those, like us, who are happy to revisit our childhood memories. That means it’s a purchase well spent.

Final Thoughts

Pokemon: Mewtwo Strikes Back--Evolution brings us back to the days when we will gleefully run in front of our televisions with a few snacks in hand. Those were the days when our biggest problem was what snack we should eat or whether or not Pikachu could defeat Charmander in a serious, no-trainer match. Be it for a short while, reminiscing the past is a worthwhile experience.

Discussion Time

To old and new readers, welcome to the classic manga series called Utena. This manga has a collection of three beautiful short stories with a theme, as you have read in the introduction or the title of this article, revolutions. Just a quick warning, the stories can be a little bit trippy so don’t rush it and take your time to appreciate the beauty of its magnificent artwork, and let’s get into.

Why You Should Read Shoujo Kakumei Utena: After the Revolution (Revolutionary Girl Utena: After the Revolution)?

1. Artwork

Let’s start with the artwork, and wow, Chiho went all out with the characters, surroundings, building designs, text effects, and even the beta, for contrast purpose. Every element Chiho had brought to the manga brings beauty to the table and shows how much attention she shows toward her characters and the world she envisioned. The upside-down castle falling toward us felt daunting but exhilarating. It was as if we have just entered another dimension or a world that couldn’t define logically. The European style buildings and medieval armory are closely resembled the real ones and let’s not forget the uniform worn by the characters whenever they engaged in a duel in the castle’s world because they are sleek.

2. The Story Behind Each Chapter

If you think this story solely focuses on Utena, it is but to a certain extent. Throughout all three short chapters of this manga, Utena’s primary role is to help these unique characters to face their truth and come to terms with them. It was more of accepting your past and mistakes before they could adequately move on with their lives. After The Revolution, the first chapter of this manga is a story of Touga Kiryu, a student council president, and Kyoichi Sainonji, a student council vice president. These two handsome boys are living in a world of the art business, where they work and compete against each other to help their clients claiming art piece of their desire for profit. The story progress with both characters learned the truth behind the particular painting called Revolution. Beautiful Thorns held so many twists that we didn’t even realize until the end. It was confusing at first whether it was related to the first chapter but not entirely as it seems. It shows the secret romance that was held by Juri Arisugawa as she was in love with Shiori ever since they have met. Juri was a world professional fencer, and she believes she was doing this because she thought of herself as Shiori’s prince and no one should be with her aside from herself, but her past competitor came back to haunt her. Will they be together in the end? We will leave that to your imagination. The Eve of the Revolution was a bit odd. At first, we thought Miki Kaoru was fooling around during the Alumni party night because he told others he wasn’t there, to begin with until we realize that it was Kozue, Miki’s twin sister. The chapter shows the definition of two peas in a pod, which in this case, what it feels like to lose the other half as twins. Without the other half, we are not complete.

3. An Important Lesson from the Manga

Let’s not look at each chapter in separate angles, but look at the entire manga as a whole. The message the mangaka trying to convey is that we have to learn how to learn and acknowledge our past so that we can move on to the next chapter of our life for the better. In addition to that lesson, we shouldn’t forget the fact that we are not alone and there will be someone, who holds a special bond with you, reach their hands toward you and help you.
