The 5 Most Iconic Anime Memes – Weeb Culture at Its Finest

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="NEOGDS-409640" text="" url="" ]

As denizens of the internet and card-carrying members of the anime community, we’re all very familiar with memes. They run the gamut from endlessly adaptable screencaps and common tropes to inspired remixes and dances that sweep conventions all over the world. Today, we’re taking a look at five of the most iconic memes the anime fandom has ever created, just to show that weeb culture is truly a wondrous thing.

[ad_top2 class="mt40 mb40"]

5. Eurobeat Songs from Initial D First Stage

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="B07JHY94JF" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]

The 1998 street racing anime Initial D (along with its many sequels) is a veritable fountain of memes. We’ve got hilarious CG cars, distinctly unattractive character designs, “multi-track drifting”... but above them all towers the infamous Eurobeat-infused soundtrack. “Déjà Vu”, “Running in the ‘90s”, and “Gas Gas Gas” have all become household names among anime fans, and YouTubers continue to create Eurobeat remixes of popular anime songs to this very day! If you’ve never heard the Eurobeat version of “Daddy Daddy Do”, you’re seriously missing out.

4. The Yamcha Pose from Dragon Ball Z

[sourceLink asin="B00W4L1XGI" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]

Yamcha’s crumpled death pose is a particular favorite of Japanese otakus, stemming from an early episode of Dragon Ball Z where a single weak enemy self-destructs and manages to kill the poor sap in one hit. It’s often used as the Japanese equivalent of “epic fail”, and the pose has become so ubiquitous over the years that it’s shown up in two Dragon Ball Z video games. Plus, there’s even an official Bandai figure of Yamcha in this exact same pose, and its description states that “With it, you can bring a hopeless battle feel to any everyday scene.” Yamcha should be proud of his legacy, especially since he never did anything important after that.

3. Truck-kun from Every Isekai Ever

Isekai anime are so common these days that they’ve all started to blend together – many of them use the same tired tropes over and over, such as the protagonist getting run over by a truck while trying to push an oblivious child out of the way. This is all to facilitate the main character’s reincarnation while immediately establishing them as a good person, of course, but it’s so morbid and specific that it’s become a meme. Our favorite send-up of “Truck-kun” actually comes from Zombieland Saga, where the speeding vehicle unceremoniously kills main character Sakura within the first five minutes of the show to the tune of screaming death metal. Definitely some of Truck-kun’s finest work.

[ad_middle class="mb40"]

2. To Be Continued from JoJo no Kimyou na Bouken (JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure)

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="B07X957K9F" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure is one of the weirdest anime franchises known to man and boasts a fiercely devoted fanbase, so naturally, it owns a sizeable chunk of the meme market. It’s hard to pare such a wealth of fabulous poses, hammy lines, and inexplicable torture dances down to just one meme to rule them all, but we’d say that the most pervasive Jojoke among the wider anime community is the “To Be Continued” arrow used at the end of most episodes. Countless YouTube compilations edit the arrow (as well as the first season’s ED, “Roundabout”) on top of famous cliffhangers or videos taken seconds before disaster. Some adventurous congoers have even cosplayed the “To Be Continued” arrow!

1. The Hare Hare Yukai Dance from Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu (The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya)

If you were an otaku in the mid to late 2000s, you knew that Haruhi Suzumiya was the undisputed goddess of anime. Kyoto Animation’s first breakout hit The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya practically took over the whole community, and the dance featured in its ED “Hare Hare Yukai” became a staple at anime conventions the world over. There were live performances with Haruhi’s seiyuu Aya Hirano, instructional videos, flash mobs, and even prison inmates in the Philippines who danced along to the J-pop tune. To this day, cosplayers gather together to recapture the joy that “Hare Hare Yukai” brought to them almost 15 years ago.

Final Thoughts

Other iconic anime memes include the “Caramelldansen” dance (almost as popular as “Hare Hare Yukai”), the infamous “anime was a mistake” quote mistranslated from an interview with Hayao Miyazaki, Fist of the North Star’s badass one-liner “Omae wa mo shindeiru”, Fate/Stay Night’s delightful fansub line “People die if they are killed”, and 4chan’s intentionally terrible Meduka Meguca threads. What did you think of our list? Did we miss any of your favorite anime memes? Let us know in the comments, and thanks so much for reading!

Re:Zero Episode 33 Finally Let’s Subaru Pour His Heart Out!!

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="2020CL-46" text="" url="" ]

Grab some tissues—maybe some towels—as Re:Zero this week didn’t hold back. Our Subaru Natsuki has finally been freed from Garfiel by Otto and Ram but that doesn’t mean his troubles have subsided. In fact, Subaru might be facing the worst threat he’s ever seen in this 33rd episode and some of the drama he experiences was quite a shocker, to say the least! Let’s talk about episode 33 of Re:Zero and why this might be one of the most tear-filled episodes yet! Subaru had just been rescued after a three-day imprisonment thanks to his “friend” Garfiel. Luckily, thanks to Otto and Ram—and Roswaal too—he’s been freed. The trio doesn’t get a long reunion, though, as Subaru demands answers about Beatrice from Roswaal and the answers he gets are quite shocking.

Turns out, Beatrice isn’t a witch after all but does have a unique ability thanks to the Tome she has. While still a bit vague on what the tome actually does, at least Subaru knows now that the strange girl in the mansion isn’t to be feared as an enemy; at least not yet. However, with one fear removed, we now have another issue and that is Garfiel learning of Subaru’s escape. Despite our heroes trying to escape quietly in the night, Garfiel approaches them and isn’t too shy about showing his anger. Ram tries to stop our half-human while Otto and Subaru escape, but the escape isn’t long-lived. Otto is obliterated trying to save his friend and Subaru is knocked out by Garfiel awakening once more in the dungeon he was kept prisoner in! Waking up, Subaru notices that the sanctuary is devoid of life and now covered in a thick layer of snow! While exploring the cold and lonely landscape, Subaru notices a cute rabbit and wonders how this little beast is the only thing alive. Unfortunately, Subaru isn’t given much time to dwell on the rabbit as he soon realizes—to our horror and his—this rabbit has just chewed his hand off and several other little rabbits have gnawed his leg off as well! Subaru is then overwhelmed by the seemingly cute threats and once more returns to death to the trial. Just as Subaru is about to kill himself by slamming his head into the floor over and over again, a familiar voice fills his mind.

The Witch of Greed—aka Echidna—has once more invited Subaru to her domain and Subaru now learns that her “bodily fluid tea” is the reason he’s been able to keep from going utterly insane despite his several recent adventures. This is where episode 33 of Re:Zero goes into truly emotional territory, when Subaru admits something he has been unable to for the entire series! Despite being able to see Subaru’s various trials and tribulations in the real-world, Echidna wants to hear Subaru admit how he’s able to survive and die non-stop. We all know that Subaru has been cursed to be unable to admit his “Return to Death” power but when he tells Echidna about it the curse is rendered null. Subaru finally yells a secret he’s been keeping these last 33 episodes and Echidna consoles him knowing this weight has been unbelievable on his poor heart. This week’s episode of Re:Zero has become one of the most emotionally powerful episodes and it’s amazing seeing as how it really only happened near the end. Just having Subaru pour his soul out to someone and finally admit his power—and the pure emotion given by his voice actor, Kobayashi Yuusuke—was truly heartbreaking and gripping. Subaru has undergone so many deaths and failures that would cause most men to simply curl up into a ball and allow death to overtake them. Now with Echidna being an ally—or hopefully so—and able to hear his pain without repercussion allows Subaru to unload a weight that has been on his shoulders since episode 1! Subaru will no doubt need to endure plenty of more battles/loses but if Echidna can at least hear his pains and be there for him emotionally, he might avoid losing his mind!

On another note, let’s not forget about Garfiel for a moment. We all knew that he and his sister—Frederica—are powerful half-beast/half-humans but we didn’t know just how powerful. Garfield has shown his true form and clearly he is a powerhouse maybe on par with the White Whale! Subaru will now need to avoid angering this already short-fused guardian unless he wishes to relive death in even more gruesome ways!

Final Thoughts

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="NEOBK-2092581" text="" url="" ]

Let’s be honest, Echidna has possibly surpassed Rem this week just because of her cute reactions to Subaru and how she’s handling our emotional hero. Aside from that, though, Re:Zero episode 33 was a truly emotionally driven rollercoaster that allowed Subaru some relief when he rarely has ever been given such. What troubles/deaths await him next? Comment below to put your best guesses in and also to admit you love Echidna just as much as we do now! For even more coverage of Re:Zero season 2 be sure to keep stuck to our Echidna loving hive here at Honey’s Anime!

If You’re a Cat, You’ll See It

  • Movie : 104 Mins
  • Genre : Drama, Magic, Romance
  • Airing Date : June 18, 2020
  • Producers : Studio Colorido, Toho Animation, Twin Engine
[signSpoiler] [ad_top2 class="mt40"]

Nakitai Watashi wa Neko wo Kaburu (A Whisker Away) Introduction and Story

Nakitai Watashi wa Neko wo Kaburu (aka A Whisker Away) has a promising start, a well-developed conflict, and a rather underwhelming conclusion. It all starts with Miyo, known as “Muge” by her classmates because of her eccentric personality, an energetic student who’s always smiling and jumping around doing silly things. Miyo has a huge crush on Kento, a boy who doesn’t even acknowledge her, and she spends her days trying to make him notice her. When she’s presented with the chance to live her life as a cat, she eagerly accepts, taking the opportunity to get closer to her loved one. The only problem is Kento will never know that the stray white cat that he found is Miyo! Of course, Miyo doesn’t mind that as she’s happy just to spend her afternoons with Kento, being called “Tarou”, and being fed delicious homemade food. Not everything that shines is gold, right? Miyo has to make a choice: she either gives up on her human self and stays as a cat forever, or goes back to being “Muge”, a girl Kento would probably never date. Needless to say, this isn’t the only problem that Miyo is struggling with. After her mom left her, Miyo started living with her dad and Kaoru, her dad’s new wife. Miyo feels like she doesn’t fit in that household, and has mixed feelings about her stepmom. Upon learning about Kento’s problems, Miyo decides to write him a letter, but one of her classmates reads it out loud for everyone to hear. Embarrassed, Kento tells Miyo that he hates her, making her cry and run away. After an awful day at school, Miyo comes back home only for Kaoru to tell her that she doesn’t need to smile if she’s not feeling okay. Overwhelmed, Miyo grabs her cat mask and runs away, deciding that she’ll be better off living her life as a cat… or at least that is until she finds out that everyone is looking for her, even Kento! The last part of A Whisker Away is a race against time, with Miyo and Kento trying to find her human face and return to the human world. With everything back to the way it was, Kento finally finds the courage to voice his feelings and tell Miyo that he loves her. And all it took was a visit to the cat world!

Why You Should Watch Nakitai Watashi wa Neko wo Kaburu (A Whisker Away)

1. Smooth Animation

We’re all spoiled when it comes to animation, and we tend to skip movies that look off. That’s not the case with A Whisker Away, though. The animation is nice and smooth, paying attention to every single detail in every scene. This movie does something particularly nice when it comes to Miyo’s eyes in her cat form; they look sparkly, and the coloring is really vivid!

2. A Heartwarming Message

The message is simple yet effective, and it will be stuck in your head long after the credits. On the one hand, you never know what the people around you are going through, and you should never judge them based on the way they behave. On the other hand, and probably the most obvious message, we confirm that love is the key to solving almost any problem.

3. Lots of Cats!

A Whisker Away is the perfect anime movie for those who love cats! There’s a whole world full of humanoid cats walking around the place, having drinks together, and gossiping. Not only that, but they also come in all shapes and sizes: chubby cats, slim cats, hairy, not-so-hairy, old cats, young cats… They are everywhere!

[ad_middle class="mt40"]
Why You Should Skip Nakitai Watashi wa Neko wo Kaburu (A Whisker Away)
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="IMDB" url="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt11958344/" ]

1. It Takes Some Time to Grow Fond of the Characters

One of A Whisker Away's main issues is how troublesome it is to actually like its characters. Miyo’s personality is a little hard to get used to, especially since she’s full of energy. Once we learn where she’s coming from, however, it’s only natural to empathize with her. As for Kento, he's really aloof and doesn’t say much; he just seems to go about his day without caring about what happens around him. Turns out, he has a lot going on back at his house, he just finds it hard to speak his mind.

2. It Glosses Over a Delicate Matter

Yes, the story is heartwarming, and we can get over this "love solves everything" premise, but one thing A Whisker Away fails at is explaining why Miyo’s mum suddenly left her. It’s only mentioned briefly and never brought up again, yet it's a delicate matter that should’ve been better explained. And not only that, but the fact that all of a sudden, Miyo’s mum wants to be part of her life again without offering any kind of explanation doesn't feel okay either.

3. Unanswered Questions

One of the many questions that A Whisker Away leaves us with is what’s that tabby cat’s role in the film. The cat is seen a lot throughout the movie, and Miyo even threatens him while in her human form, but we don’t know why that happens. Another question is why did the people at the human-cat cafe decide to become cats? What happened to their human faces? Why does the mask seller want their life spans? We need answers, and we need them now!

Final Thoughts

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="IMDB" url="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt11958344/" ]

Nakitai Watashi wa Neko wo Kaburu (A Whisker Away) is a film that will keep you entertained for its runtime. We probably will forget about it in a couple of years, but that doesn’t mean it’s not worth giving it a try. If Spirited Away and The Return of the Cat had a baby, it’d probably look a lot like A Whisker Away. Just saying...

6 Anime Like Great Pretender [Recommendations]

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="TBR-31041D" text="" url="" ]

In Netflix’s Great Pretender, its cast (most especially through Laurent and Edamura) does an excellent job of embodying wrestling icon Eddie Guerrero’s philosophies of lying, cheating, and stealing as they not only surprise the audience, but make them laugh as they work together, and against each other, in their high-stakes heists. In one moment, you think they’re a team, and the next moment, there is so much backstabbing it puts Game of Thrones to shame...only for our heroes to reunite and come out on top. With all the shenanigans going on in Great Pretender, it truly lives up to its name. While Great Pretender obviously isn’t the first heist anime, it takes the genre to new creative heights with its unique art style, bombastic soundtrack, and its captivating cast. In addition to Great Pretender, what are some anime we can recommend where the game is to lie, cheat, and steal? Read our six recommendations to find out!

Similar Anime to Great Pretender

1. Lupin III

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="crunchyroll" url="http://www.crunchyroll.com/lupin-the-3rd-part-5" ]
[en][information_general item1 = "Episodes" content1="23" item2="Aired" content2="October 24, 1971 - March 26, 1972" post_id=""][/en]
[es][information_general item1 = "Episodios" content1="___content1___" item2="Emisión" content2="___content2___" post_id=""][/es]

Naturally, we have to start this list with the true OG of heist anime, Lupin III. Not only are they alike in terms of plot, but in just about every way you can imagine. Like Laurent, Lupin is a French national with a goofy personality and he uses that to his advantage. Laurent, on the other hand, shows more control with his aloofness as he comes across as calmer and more collected. Lupin’s panicky qualities are expressed through Edamura, who is relatively new to the big leagues in the world of conning. Many of the character designs presented in Great Pretender share numerous qualities with Lupin III, for example, the lanky proportions for the men and the voluptuous proportions of the women. While the hairstyles of both anime are more in-tune with their times, the way they are edged and rounded share similar techniques. Lastly, both anime use a lot of jazz and blues to bring a balance to the dangerous and comedic qualities.

2. Cowboy Bebop

The unforgettable classic that helped put Adult Swim on the map; Cowboy Bebop not only pays homage to heist titles like Lupin III, but takes it to Mars and beyond! As opposed to Edamura, who is the closest thing to a normal guy in Laurent’s ragtag group of scammers, Spike is more like Laurent himself. He’s cool, has a mysterious past, and he’s dangerous whether he’s armed or not. Just like how Laurent’s gang consists of people of various backgrounds, the crew of the Bebop all come from different backgrounds to the point you wonder how they ended up together (at least with Spike and Jet) to finally become a family who break the law, but for the right reasons. However, the heists in Cowboy Bebop don’t exactly involve art or money themselves, but collecting bounties long before Dog Chapman made it cool. In order for the crew of the Bebop to catch their prey, they have to plan careful schemes, work undercover to get close to their target and catch them when they’re most vulnerable. In both anime, you see the characters are capable of having a change of heart, but in the end, no matter how many tries you take yourself out of the game, the game will never take itself out of you. By the way, did we mention that Cowboy Bebop has one of the catchiest soundtracks you’ll ever hear? If you loved the jazz and blues in Great Pretender, then you’re going to love what Cowboy Bebop has to offer!

3. Black Lagoon

Like Edamura, Rokurou Okajima thought he was living the life of an average Joe (or maybe Tarou in this case?), but life had other plans for him until he found himself kidnapped and then recruited into the world of modern piracy in Southeast Asia. After being abandoned by his company, Rokurou joins the Black Lagoon Company and takes the name Rock. Compared to their colleagues, Rock and Edamura both question the nature of what they do but find themselves good at it. They both believe in non-violence and try to de-escalate situations with their words, except that Rock is much better at it. Revy, the female lead, shares a lot of common qualities with Abigail, one of Laurent’s most trusted minions. They’re both femme fatales with dark backgrounds, and it has made them cautious and yet deadly when it comes to confronting their enemies. Another fun novelty that is shared between both anime, when you watch them in their original Japanese, the Japanese voice actors do attempt to speak in English and in other languages when interacting with characters from another country. While the English dub of Black Lagoon has a lot of f-bombs, just watching Revy using English swears in the Japanese version adds more punch to the comedy.

Any Anime Like Great Pretender ?

4. Persona 5 The Animation

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="ANZX-13575" text="" url="" ]

Ren and Edamura are a lot alike in that they enter their worlds as victims of their circumstances. Like Edamura, Ren is convicted for a crime he never committed, but thankfully only gets probation (in large part due to still being a minor, while Edamura was never fully aware of his company’s schemes). Naturally, their criminal record results in them becoming outcasts. This aspect also briefly addresses a bigger problem in a worldwide sense as it relates to re-integrating those with criminal records into society. While it’s understandable and human nature that people are distrustful towards those with a record, the fact that they can’t get a job is what leads them back to a life of crime, and we see this in both anime. While both Persona 5 and Great Pretender are part of the heist genre, this feature is also expressed differently in their own distinguishing ways that serve to tell their own stories, but serve the same purpose-to fight corruption for the little guy. In terms of art, both anime use vibrant psychedelic colors in their backgrounds but in the case of Persona 5, this applies when the cast enters the Metaverse, while it’s commonly used throughout Great Pretender. Lastly, both anime have addicting blues and jazz music that are largely sung in English for you to get your groove on.

5. Banana Fish

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="NEOGDS-307064" text="" url="" ]
[en][information_general item1 = "Episodes" content1="24" item2="Aired" content2="July 6, 2018 - December 21, 2018" post_id=""][/en]
[es][information_general item1 = "Episodios" content1="___content1___" item2="Emisión" content2="___content2___" post_id=""][/es]

For those who want something a lot darker, then we got Banana Fish for you. Considering the time between the end of the manga’s serialization in 1994 and the anime’s premiere in 2018, some appropriate changes are made to modernize the story (for example, Griffin fought in Vietnam in the original manga while he fought in Iraq in the anime). Other than that, the anime follows the manga accurately well. While Great Pretender is more of a comedy anime with its illegal activity, Banana Fish’s story is a lot darker, but by no means are they different. Like Edamura, Eiji, a photographer from Japan, is kind of forced into a life of crime, and is exposed to numerous horrors of a pre-Giuliani NYC, but set in modern times. What Banana Fish also does great is how it portrays the highs and lows of the Big Apple just like how the first arc of Great Pretender gives its audience the highs and lows of LA.

Like Great Pretender and some of the other anime we have listed, Durarara!! has an ensemble cast but takes it to new heights as each episode gives us a different story based on who the main character is for that episode. What they all have in common is that they all operate in the underworld, some by choice, some by circumstance. Like Edamura, Mikado was just a regular guy but moving to Tokyo’s Ikebukuro district sucked him into a world of crime and other forms of insanity. While Durarara has comedic elements, in comparison to the slapstick nature of Great Pretender, the comedy in Durarara!! is darker. Like Edamura, it’s not just Mikado who is forced into his world by circumstance, it applies to a good percentage of the cast as well, and they all have their own reasons for choosing to stay, and there are those that want to leave but can’t. Lastly, while Durarara!! doesn’t exactly apply the pop art techniques of Great Pretender, what they share artistically is how they portray their environments. Just like how Great Pretender does a great job of capturing Los Angeles and Nakamise in Asakusa, Durarara!! masterfully portrays Ikebukuro as if you’re actually there!!

Final Thoughts

If there is one thing we can take from Great Pretender and the six anime we recommended for you to check out, it’s that crime probably does pay, if you do it for the right reasons. Either way, you’re going to find yourself in a moral dilemma and we see this with Edamura every time a new heist starts. Not only do we see this with Edamura, but we also see it with Rock and Eiji because it’s all they know. With Laurent, he does it for the thrill and this is represented through Spike and Lupin. Finally what we also find appealing about all these anime is that they portray real life locations (except for Cowboy Bebop, of course) to tell their stories. Some take place in Japan, and there are others take place in other parts of the world. If you ever visit the places portrayed in them, you’ll probably think if you can pull the same heist as the cast of their respective anime. Other than that, what are some heist anime you feel others should check out? Leave your recommendations in the comments.

Introduction: The Demon Sword Master of Excalibur Academy

One of the things that hook us to the fantasy world is the hack and slash, magic, and fictional flare it provides us. The thrill of reading sword-wielding heroes slashing down demons and the vice versa can get pretty addicting you see. That’s exactly the reason why we can’t stop looking and inhaling action fantasy manga and/or light novels. Well, good thing that our great authors and mangaka don’t really stop creating more content for us to inhale.

Discussion Time

In this series, the main hero is Leonis Death Magnus, the demon king. Yeah, you read that right. The supposed bad guy is the hero in this story. But since he’s the strongest threat and enemy in humankind, the great heroes have cornered him, causing him to be sealed for a thousand years. He is then saved from being sealed by two people. Unfortunately, not a brother and a sister, but two people nonetheless. He originally sealed himself to prepare for the upcoming battle but found that things have pretty much changed, so he is forced to enroll at the academy.

Why You Should Read The Demon Sword Master of Excalibur Academy
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="NEOBK-2484011" text="" url="" ]

1. The Writing is Absolute Mastery

Not even delving in yet with the content, the form in itself is already pure madness. The descriptions are very vivid and clear. There are also no awkward phrasings nor abrupt stopping. The sentences just flow right after the other. In addition to that, the novel used vast vocabulary, avoiding repetition and redundancy. Nevertheless, reading it has given us a very clear picture of what the author is trying to paint. An absolute masterpiece.

2. Dashing Art in Betweens

The cool thing about this series, at least the first volume, is that it has an illustrator, Asaki Tosaka. That means that there are amazing artworks to be expected. True enough, there is a lot of manga-esque art to drool over. Imagine reading a wall of text, then a cool artwork suddenly pops up. Now, that’s what you call a pleasant surprise. It also serves as a good bookmark and toilet break.

3. Funny Young Kid Trying To Look Tough

Since Leonis is technically more than a millennium old and one of the strongest beings in the existence of this universe, he holds the right to act tough a bit. Well, that should be the case, but it just doesn’t give the right image given that he is now using the body of a ten-year-old. Just imagine your little brother doing some heavy boasting and acting like the boss around the house. It’s both hilarious and pathetic regardless of whether or not he can back it up.

Final Thoughts

If it’s entertainment you’re looking for, then The Demon Sword Master of Excalibur Academy got you covered. If you’re looking for more, then The Demon Sword Master of Excalibur Academy still got you covered. The writing, content, and art are absolutely amazing. What we’re basically trying to say is that this series is worth buying and has us craving for more volumes. Fingers crossed that we’ll get them sooner, rather than later.

PIKOTARO and Pokémon came together to create something to help people smile and have fun at home this summer!

[en]What You Need to Know: [/en][es]Lo que necesitas saber: [/es]

  • "PIKA to PIKO" – singer-songwriter PIKOTARO’s collaboration song with iconic Pokémon, Pikachu – is now available on digital platforms worldwide, along with a newly-released music video which premiered at the August 31 finale of the "Pokémon Virtual Fest" virtual amusement park event in Japan.
  • In "PIKA to PIKO", the internationally famous pair of pop culture icons dance and sing to each other with creative communication and sometimes surprising choreography.
  • Earlier in 2020, PIKOTARO released "PPAP 2020", an updated version of his 2016 hit "PPAP" (“Pen-Pineapple-Apple-Pen”), adding a new chorus of “Wash! Wash! Wash!” with the mission of helping children and adults wash their hands thoroughly. The video – with the message of “Pray for People and Peace” – made international headlines and has been viewed over 10 million times in more than 150 countries.
  • To create "PIKA to PIKO", PIKOTARO teamed up once again with arranger KOSAKA DAIMAOU, who produced PIKOTARO's "Stay-At-Home" trilogy ("PPAP 2020, "Hoppin' Flappin'", and "Sukiyaki"). The 2016 viral sensation "PPAP" achieved over 135 million views on YouTube, and the song’s multiple versions have amassed over 500 million views combined.

"I’ve always felt a connection with Pikachu. I was dreaming of a way to collaborate with Pikachu, so I feel very lucky to have this opportunity to create a fun song together.... I interpreted Pikachu's words by myself for this song. Nobody knows Pikachu’s language, but I think I understood it in PIKOTARO’s way. In the music video, I call Pikachu 'Pikataro' when he puts sunglasses on. Pikachu looks cuter with them on so I think his popularity might increase even more! ...I would like all the children around the world to enjoy the collaboration between PIKOTARO and Pikachu. The whole world is in a difficult situation now, but I want to warm it up and entertain many people! KOSAKA-san's sound is really popping, too."

The Other Characters are Also Interesting! Fiancée of the Wizard Vol. 1

[ad_top1 class="mb40"]
  • Episodes : Masaki Kazuka, Syuri Nakamura, Keiko Sakano
  • Publisher : Yen Press
  • Genre : Fantasy, Isekai, Romance
  • Producers : August 2020
[signSpoiler] [ad_top2 class="mt40"]

Introduction: Fiancée of the Wizard

Isekai, the dream of many. But what if instead of being the gleaming hero or the demon lord’s spawn, the heroine isn’t even a goblin, monster, slime, spider, or somebody with a fancy game system. Instead, she is just plain old townsfolk, an NPC. Someone who is barely recognizable to the rest and plays minimal to no significant role. Will it be a boring waste of time? Will it be an unlucky twist of fate?

Discussion Time

Fiancée of the Wizard focuses on the life of Filimina via Adina. Since this is an isekai story, Filimina isn’t originally Filimina. She was an ordinary Japanese office worker shy away from 30. However, she was one day hit by a vehicle. Is it the isekai star, Truck-kun? We’re not sure, but she was reincarnated to the body of a dying three-year-old girl, Filimina. With her intact memory, she immediately figured out what is happening around her and explored. Unfortunately, she realized that she wasn’t the glamorous hero, but mere townsfolk.

Why You Should Read Fiancee of the Wizard
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="NEOBK-2194148" text="" url="" ]

1. An Isekai Not Focusing on Being Overpowered

Unlike a lot of isekai stories with protagonists either aiming to conquer the world or save the world from the evil antagonist. In this series, however, the protagonist isn’t going to do any of that. After all, she isn’t an all-powerful hero nor has an invincible weapon. Rather than fighting all sorts of monsters, we get to see a heart tickling love story. On the other hand, there are still a few hints of action since the heroine’s partner is the overpowered wizard.

2. Another Look at Fantasy

If you’re thinking of still reading action-packed scenes, just give it up. The series focuses more on the romance between Filimina and Egiedeyrus. The world does include magic, fantasy, summoning, and all, but they are treated more as a matter of facts, than exciting tales. That is what makes this series pretty interesting. It shows us that romance in the fantasy world exists, more so, star torn lovers. However, these kinds of stories aren’t the same as how school life is fantasy in our world. For one, kids in fantasy get betrothed at a very young age.

[ad_middle class="mt40"]
Why You Should Skip Fiancee of the Wizard

1. A Middle-Aged Woman Acting Like a Maiden

Since this is an isekai, we are made aware that our protagonist, Filimina, is an adult that has been reincarnated to this new world. That being said, she is literally a middle-aged woman living in a young girl’s body. As such, looking at her acting coy and embarrassed like a teenager could be a bit cringy. Nevertheless, she still is growing up in her body and is technically still a teenage girl, but the fact that she's an adult can knock on your mind like a very unwanted visitor making sure you’re uncomfortable.

Final Thoughts

Fiancee of the Wizard isn’t your ordinary isekai story. For one, it focuses more on the bonding between characters than being powerful. Another is that it makes us view isekai with a different lens. Maybe, just maybe, reincarnating in a fantasy world doesn’t always guarantee a flavorful tale. Maybe it can be just like Filimina, being a boring side character. Nevertheless, that doesn’t mean the world needs to end. It just has to be a different kind of adventure, an exciting normal one.

When Ruka was a kid, she saw a “ghost” in the water at the aquarium where her dad worked. Years later, after getting in trouble at school for fighting back a bully, Ruka is suddenly drawn toward the aquarium—which she hasn’t visited in quite some time—and she meets two mysterious boys, Umi and Sora, who were raised by dugongs and are being studied by her father and the scientists at the aquarium because of their particular physical constitution and their connection to a mythical oceanic “festival” that seems imminent and is of utmost scientific importance. Umi and Sora are not normal and both feel sick if away from the water too long. They seem to be ill and fading away and, according to the scientists’ research they have a limited time left, but when they’re in the water playing with Ruka and showing her their world, they seem like they have all the energy in the world! Umi and Sora hear songs coming from the sea, just like Ruka hears strange calls from the ocean and it all seems to be connected to a strange occurrence around the world; all the fish are disappearing from the oceans! A couple of shooting stars mark the beginning of a legend coming to life and as the three kids get caught up in the mystery behind the sudden worldwide disappearance of the ocean's fish, they uncover cosmic connections that will change them forever. Children of the Sea takes you in a philosophical and metaphysical dive into the deep ocean of human existence, all wrapped up in a beautifully drawn and animated package.

Children of the Sea Trailer

Children of the Sea Movie Review

The immediate visual appeal of Children of the Sea is undeniable thanks to Daisuke Igarashi’s unique designs. The almost palpable strokes of the character outlines, Sora’s beautiful, deep eyes and Umi’s brown expressive ones, and the realistic yet abstract whale depictions are unlike anything we’ve seen. The constant theme of sky and water (Sora and Umi respectively) is furthered by the bright blues and gorgeous, fluid animation whether we’re watching Ruka swimming or majestic giant whales performing a ritualistic dance. The soundtrack furthers the audience’s immersion with the whale songs, sound effects, and symphonic musical arrangements, including the ending theme "Umi no Yuurei” by Kenshi Yonezu. Children of the Sea puts together a philosophical work of art that may take a few watches to fully understand. It starts off easy to understand and then things start moving quickly toward the abstract and metaphysical. From galactic beginnings and genetic memory to metaphors and supernatural occurrences, there is a lot going on in Children of the Sea. Think about it as a metaphysical slice of life. Those looking for an easy, feel-good slice of life movie may be turned off by all the pondering and philosophical waxing but if you just watch it for the adventure, it is just as enjoyable! Those looking for a gorgeous movie that makes them think and feel the feels will likely find it intriguing.

Children of the Sea Blu-ray + DVD Set Bonus Features

Besides the marvelous movie, the BR+DVD bundle also includes other digital goodies like interviews with the cast like Sumiko Fuji who voices the wise old Dehdeh and the young Hiiro Ishibashi who voices Umi, among others. It’s also interesting to hear from Win Morisaki (voice of Anglade, a third ocean-loving boy) who has also worked dubbing Hollywood movies! Besides the cast, there are also interviews with director Ayumu Watanabe and Joe Hisahishi, the composer and the one responsible for the extra layer of depth the movie has—who also mentions understanding the film when watching it more than once. A 30-minute or so collection of selected storyboards from throughout the film show us the literal outline of the film, while short videos give us a unique behind-the-scenes look into the world of Children of the Sea. A short video titled “Studio 4C Makes a Meal” has the staff gathering ingredients and preparing a lobster dinner from the movie—it’s great to see them be regular people having nerdy fun!—and “Making of the Poster” gives us an entrancing and oddly satisfying timelapse of artist Shinji Kimura creating the movie poster from beginning to end. Yet another short video walks the audience through the steps of animation that were taken for some of the movie’s animatic scenes from outlines to the fully animated, computer-generated sequences. Other digital bonuses are the intro to the film at Animation is Film by Director Watanabe and CG Director Akimoto and an exclusive feature-length documentary about the making of the film titled “Turep - Looking for Children of the Sea” which sheds light on many of the unanswered questions one might have after watching the movie—some things may have been omitted from the original manga—and what the creators were going for as well as their own experiences through it. The documentary is an adventure all its own and definitely worth the watch.

Honey’s Anime Final Verdict

While the deep meanings and allegories may be lost on some, it can’t be denied that, as Watanabe says when introducing the film; the theme of Children of the sea is simple. It is about the mystery of life. It’s about a girl who meets two mysterious boys and their unique summer adventure and the audience coming along for the ride. It helps that it is also visually stunning and musically immersive. Those who can appreciate thought-provoking writing, those with a philosophical inclination, and those who love animals and the ocean will especially enjoy Children of the Sea and all the insightful interviews and the documentary that add even more depth to the story as it now involves all those brought together to create it. It’s as though it was meant to be… Children of the Sea is definitely a unique anime gem to add to your collection, especially the set with all the extra content, and especially if you are already familiar with the original work. Have you seen Children of the Sea yet? What did you think of it? If not, are you planning on getting the BR+DVD set when it comes out September 1st? Stay tuned to Honey’s Anime for more insights on the latest anime releases!

Sadly, over the years, this type of sexual play has gained a bad reputation thanks to a lot of misunderstandings. For example, it was thought for a time that those who enjoy this kind of activity suffer some form of psychopathy. Nowadays, it's generally understood that the ones being dominated, the submissives, are the ones with the real power. The Fictsexual Phenomenon - Why Some Japanese Otaku Are Choosing to Marry Anime Characters

$

[ad_top1 class="mb40"]
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="NEOGDS-394338" text="" url="" ]

Recently, a Japanese woman named Ori Kusanagi held a marriage ceremony between herself and Rei Furuya, a handsome secret agent character from Detective Conan. She had rings made, took photos in a wedding dress, and even changed her name to Ori Furuya. Only a year earlier, a man named Akihiko Kondo celebrated his wedding to Vocaloid idol Miku Hatsune and now spends his days living with a $2700 Amazon Echo style hologram of his wife. These kinds of people are referred to as “fictsexuals” in Japanese for their attraction to 2D characters over real-life humans, and they’re more common than you might think. We’re happy for them that they’ve found joy and companionship in life, but is there a reason why they’ve chosen this path? And could the phenomenon cause problems for the Japanese LGBT community, who fight for their right to be taken seriously and yet still can’t legally marry in their home country? Let’s take a closer look at the factors at play here.

A Solution to Japan’s Dating Problem

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="imdb" url="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt10204658/mediaviewer/rm2534652929" ]

Japan’s birth rate has been on a downward trend for decades, and more and more young people are choosing not to bother with relationships at all. Japanese work culture is notoriously intense and time-consuming and houses are often too small to comfortably raise children, so getting married and starting a family can seem like more trouble than it’s worth. But humans still innately desire companionship, so what are they supposed to do? By “marrying” anime characters, Furuya and Kondo fulfilled their societal obligations to get married without having to deal with the frustrating reality of raising a family in modern Japan. They both also suffer from low self-esteem and mental disorders, and since mental health is a taboo subject in their culture, the joy they feel from being with these characters has helped them tremendously in lieu of the medicine and therapy that they’d be unlikely to find in Japan. The general public’s opinion tends to be mixed when it comes to fictsexuals, but the prevailing sentiment seems to be that if they aren’t hurting anyone, they should do whatever makes them happy.

Is It Harmful to LGBT People?

But what if they are hurting someone? Obviously, they aren’t stalking the voice actors or creators, but it’s possible that the popular consciousness could lump fictsexuals in with the LGBT community as people with “alternative lifestyles” who don’t deserve to be taken seriously or given specific rights. Japanese culture already views lesbian relationships as childish for the most part and it’s rare to see a queer character outside of the segregated yaoi and yuri genres who isn’t a gross stereotype, so lonely otakus who marry anime characters for their own happiness could make those assumptions even worse. Several Japanese Twitter posts seem to point in that direction, at least.

Final Thoughts

Overall, the act of marrying a fictional character seems to be largely harmless. If it can help people like Furuya and Kondo find comfort in their lives, especially within the minefield that is the Japanese dating scene, then far be it from us to criticize them. We’re a little worried that it could prolong the fight for marriage equality, but as long as everyone realizes that fictsexuals and LGBT people are two very different groups with different intentions, everything should be okay. What did you think of our overview? What’s your opinion on fictsexuals? Which anime character would you marry if you could? Let us know in the comments, and thanks so much for reading!

Tamar Herman
Honey-Chan
Interview with Patrick Seitz
[gray-hex-decoration]
Honey’s Anime: How do you approach playing villains (Dio, Jeritza, Arthas, etc.)? Do you attempt to understand them, or do you ham it up as much as possible?
Patrick Seitz: Even when I go ham on a character, I always try to tie it to a reasonable motivation that the character himself would actually feel. I would never forsake understanding. Actually, from where I’m sitting, understanding and ham needn’t be mutually exclusive. A lot of villains feel the need (whether warranted or otherwise) to defend their actions to the greater world, which is where you get those grandstanding moments. It’s really just a matter of how many of those public moments you’re juggling versus the more private, introspective moments.
Honey’s Anime: What has been your most challenging voice acting role to date?
Patrick Seitz: Probably Garrosh Hellscream from "World of Warcraft." The voice itself is so brutal and pushed, but there’s a lot going on under the hood with Garrosh, so to speak. There needs to be space for that nuance to come through without sacrificing any of the brutality in the tone. It’s exhausting—but when you’re putting yourself through the wringer for the greater glory of a character like Garrosh, it’s well worth it.
Honey’s Anime: Since many of your characters tend to be fountains of memes, do you have a favorite meme among them? “The Culling of Arthas” and basically anything Dio says are top tier for me, personally.
Patrick Seitz: For me, it would probably have to be the Dio memes. I’ve got a shirt with the whole “But it was me, Dio!” moment on it. I actually bought two of it, because I loved it so damn much and I knew if I only got one, I’d just wear it into the ground.
Honey’s Anime: Thank you so much for your time! We’re looking forward to seeing your full panel at the Virtual Crunchyroll Expo this weekend!

Final Thoughts

It warms our hearts to hear that Seitz loves his characters and JoJokes as much as we do. We’ll also appreciate Garrosh’s scenes in World of Warcraft more now that we know how much blood, sweat, and tears went into his vocal performance. What did you think of our interview? Will you be tuning in for the Virtual Crunchyroll Expo? Let us know in the comments, and thanks so much for reading!

Every story has its protagonists. Main characters, especially in shounen anime, have certain qualities that seem to transcend the stories themselves and find canon in the genre. Shounen protagonists all seem to have, or eventually develop a do-or-die attitude. Many of these characters possess a special ability or trait, an unwavering faith in themselves and their friends, as well as a lofty goal that keeps them going, but they also face intense and difficult paths. En En no Shouboutai’s (Fire Force) Kusakabe Shinra and Sword Art Online’s Kirigaya Kazuto, better known as Kirito, are main characters of different classes but, who faces more “torture” in their path as a protagonist? First we’ll profile these characters and then we’ll compare scars!

Kusakabe Shinra - En En no Shouboutai (Fire Force)

3rd Generation pyromancer, Kusakabe Shinra, is in many ways a standard shounen protagonist, complete with a dark past and inner demons that threaten the sanctity of the righteous life as a hero that he is trying to build. From the very beginning, Shinra is prone to jumping into the fray to save someone else’s life. What makes him a bit of a curveball as far as main characters go is his very close identification with the devil – it stands in stark contrast with the hero role that he tries to assume, but also torments him throughout his life. Everything about Shinra presupposes malice or evil, but he wishes to stand on the other side.

Kirigaya Kazuto “Kirito” - Sword Art Online: Alicization - War of Underworld

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="VVCL-1683" text="" url="" ]

Kirito is an overpowered protagonist. Be it Hell, high water or even god, Kirito is the type of main character who will always win in stunning fashion. One thing that drives this point home is the fact that he played a gun-based RPG game armed with a lightsaber. Some people would even call the black outfit a kind of plot armour! He tries his hardest to be one of the good guys and will hardly ever put a foot wrong in that endeavour, but he finds himself unsettled in the deepest parts of his psyche given the traumatic experience of being trapped in Aincrad for two years.

Similarities

1. Hero Complex

Kirito is the quintessential “good guys win in the end” type of main character, moreover, Kirito is insanely powerful, often serving as the Deus ex Machina when things were looking lost. Kirito also wishes to protect all of his friends from harm, but he also has the grit and bravery to challenge people whom he believes are wrong. Shinra is less of a trump card than Kirito; however, he too aims to protect and serve, often verbalizing that he wants to be a hero.

2. Inner Turmoil

Both characters are proactive main characters who take on the mantle of being a hero in some way. Kirito becomes the player who frees everyone from Aincrad after beating Heathcliff in a climactic battle. Shinra aims to be a quintessential hero, a so-called friend of justice. Kirito’s desire evolves into a desire to protect those close to him; however, with the deaths of some of his friends from the past, more recently, the death of Eugeo in the first half of Sword Art Online: Alicization – War of Underworld, Kirito faces an unbelievable level of internal turmoil. Kirito also feels extreme guilt for all the people he has killed in his adventures in these virtual realities. Guilt and shame dance around in his mind in a similar fashion to the swirling torrent of guilt faced by Shinra; initially due to the belief that his mother’s death and little brother’s disappearance was his fault. In the current season of Fire Force, Shinra is being forced to face his inner demons brought to the fore by the experience he had in the realm of Adolla, better known as Hell.

Differences

While Kirito tends to be the saving grace when things are looking glum, the second cour of Sword Art Online: Alicization – War of Underworld had the character stuck in a strange vegetative state. By the 7th episode; however, Kirito is successfully revived and stands valiantly in front of an enemy who even overwhelmed Asuna and the gang. Kirito is always the last man standing (even if he wasn’t even standing up at all for 7 episodes). The entirety of Sword Art Online has cast Kirito as a kind of eternal saving grace in the series, while Shinra is not the same kind of ace in the hole. Fire Force has a heavy emphasis on team triumphs given the fact that they are a company in the fire brigade, so while Shinra is immeasurably important to the cause, his presence isn’t the kind of sigh of relief in his respective universe that Kirito’s presence is to his own.

Who Had it Worse?

It depends on how you look at it. There seems to be more to Shinra’s origin story as a protagonist than Kirito, as well as a more striking appearance and presence. Shinra’s glowing red eyes and sharp-toothed smile which he bares even when he’s nervous, have served been a haunting recurring theme, especially considering the fact that the combination has had him regarded a “demon”, or “devil”, the polar opposite of the type of person he is openly trying to become. Kirito’s black jacket can be seen as an application of this contrast present in the main characters of these two anime; however, it exists more as Kirito’s accepted trademark as “The Black Swordsman”, more than it is a mark of shame like Shinra’s features are. Shinra suffers guilt due to his abilities and even his own appearance, things exacerbated by the hostility he faced from other people right after his family’s home burned down and his mother and younger brother were presumed dead. Kirito’s ability to jump into the action just as things are getting worrisome for his friends inspires the earlier sentiment that Kirito is the Sword Art Online “personified” Deus ex Machina. This can feel like a repetitive turn of events that stifles the novelty of any arc in the plot, mainly because one can expect Kirito to come and save the day. Be that as it may, he has been unable to do this on a few painful occasions, most notably the unfortunate massacre of the Moonlit Black Cats. Part of Kirito’s intense guilt lies in the fact that he survives these incredibly dangerous incidents while someone else dies, and his victory against the Pontifex as well as Eugeo’s death in Alicization’s first season leave deep scars. Perhaps this kind of protagonist can come across as protected by what the internet will call “plot armour”; however, it isn’t fair to expect that this kind of character be scrapped completely – overpowered main characters can also be striking and interesting in and of themselves too.
