Gibiate is a 2020 action sci-fi anime series with an interesting time-travel twist! The story follows two samurai exiled from their respective clans for their own personal reasons before they find themselves mysteriously transported to Tokyo in the year 2030 – two years after a deadly virus took hold of the entire world and drove humanity to the brink of extinction. The series features quite a few themes that we have seen driving the main plot of various other stories, albeit in isolation, so Gibiate has a lot of different shows that have a similar feel!

6. Ibara no Ou (King of Thorns)

The world is thrown into disarray when the deadly—and aptly named as it slowly petrifies its victim—Medusa Virus emerges. With no other way to save humankind, a handful of people are selected to be put into cryosleep in hopes that a cure might exist somewhere in the future. Kasumi is one of 160 people chosen for this; however, she is sceptical of the possibility and treats the event like any other sleep. When she and the other chosen ones awaken from their slumber, they find the Cold Sleep Capsule Centre littered with thorns and the world populated by horrific monsters and creatures that they have never seen before. Gibiate and Ibara no Ou share the same basic plotline–the world is at some point in the future ravaged by a deadly pandemic and then there are big scary monsters that kill people. While Gibiate outright explains that the monsters are humans who have undergone horrific transformations, Ibara no Ou goes in a slightly different direction; however, the basic idea of a deadly virus that changes people’s morphology in some way remains consistent in both titles.

A hyperspace gate appears in the Pacific Ocean, leading the way to a world of monsters and other fabled creatures. The city of San-Teresa is home to two million such creatures; however, no city is without its problems. With the increasing level of crime in the city, the San-Teresa Metro Police establishes a new unit, with the former JSDF soldier Matoba Kei at the helm. When a fairy trafficking case goes horribly wrong, Kei’s partner loses his life, leaving Kei hungry for revenge. The force replaces Kei’s partner with Tilarna Exedilika, a Knight of Mirvor from the Farbani Kingdom, who has also been working at finding the kidnapped fairy and bringing her back to the kingdom. Gibiate and Cop Craft have very different plotlines; however, both titles feature a universe where monsters are introduced to human society. In Gibiate, this happens by way of viral infection resulting in transformation, while Cop Craft’s varied creatures arrived through a gate opening in the very fabric of reality. Both titles feature protagonists who are in some way traumatized by their varied interactions with the monsters, but also protagonists who are not natural residents of the location in which they find themselves having these interactions.

Oribe Mutsumi and her classmates were set to go on a school trip; however, things go incredibly wrong when their plane crashes and they are left stranded on a deserted island. Mutsumi possesses a great deal of knowledge about nature and the outdoors and is optimistic about their odds of survival; however, she is unaware that the island is populated by giant killer insects! Will Mutsumi and her classmates even last three days? The Island of Giant Insects and Gibiate share certain attributes, such as the story being driven by the main character’s introduction into a dangerous environment featuring giant monsters of some kind. Both series share the cosmetic similarity of having their respective giant monsters animated with 3D CGI. Unlike Gibiate’s main characters, when the cast of The Island of Giant Insects were in their mode of transportation, they were merely marooned on an island and not an entire timeline.

During the industrial revolution, humanity is rocked by a deadly virus that turns the infected into horrific zombie-like creatures known as “Kabane”, which can only be killed through the destruction of their metal hearts. Residents of the island of Hinomoto can credit their safety from these abominations to the huge walls that protect their settlements, which can only be accessed via train. Ikoma is a young train technician who has been using his spare time to craft a weapon that he believes can easily pierce through the Kabane’s tough skin, he just needs an opportunity to test it. Who knows, he might just get that chance! Like Gibiate, Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress features a post-apocalyptic Japanese landscape shaped by the emergence of a deadly virus. The main difference is that Kabaneri is set in an alternate version of the past, while Gibiate is set in the future. Kabaneri’s deadly virus is similar to the Gibia virus in that it causes the infected to morph into horrific, human-eating beasts.

In 2029, Japan is rocked to the core by the outbreak of the aptly named “Apocalypse Virus”, an event which was later dubbed “Lost Christmas”. Seeking foreign aid, Japan is returned to a kind of normalcy with the intervention of a military organization known as GHQ. Ten years later, Japan remains subjugated by GHQ, prompting the emergence of the resistance group known as Funeral Parlour, led by Tsutsugami Gai. 17-year-old Ouma Shu is an awkward high school student who meets Yuzuriha Inori, a prominent member of the resistance during a very important mission. They seek to obtain “The Power of Kings”, which grants the wielder the ability to draw out the physical manifestation of a person’s personality – their “Void”. Shu inadvertently comes into possession of the ability, causing him to become an unwilling yet crucial participant in the fight to take back Japan. The main similarity between Gibiate and Guilty Crown lies in the fact that both are set in a post-apocalyptic future shaped by the emergence of a deadly virus. With regards to the viruses that set off the events of their respective series, both viruses feature symptoms which result in morphological changes in the victims. In a loose sense, Ouma Shu’s involvement in the fight waged by Funeral Parlour for Japan’s freedom is similar to the inadvertent involvement of Kenroku and Sensui in the survival of a humanity 400 years forward from their own time in that both sets of protagonists are displaced but forced to participate.

The year is 2021 and humanity is in a precarious situation when the parasitic Gastrea Virus infects people, turning them into monsters. The remnants of humanity live behind the Monolith–thick, high walls made from “Varanium”, the only material that can hurt Gastrea. Tendo Civil Security is one outfit of human resistance against the Gastrea. Satomi Rentaro is a Promoter of Tendo Civil Security, an individual tasked with fighting against the Gastrea threat through the deployment and supervision of an Initiator, a little girl imbued with superhuman abilities because of exposure to the virus. Aihara Enju is Satomi’s partner-in-arms, fighting against the monstrosities in a post-apocalyptic Tokyo. The main similarity between Black Bullet and Gibiate is the theme of viral infection leading to grotesque transformations in human beings. Both anime are set in some kind of post-apocalyptic future where humanity has been driven to the very brink, but a sliver of hope exists in the main characters, who are unlike any of the other characters for divergent reasons. If Black Bullet is serving us viruses and giant monsters, Gibiate is serving something like Samurai

Final Thoughts

We have not had too many titles that follow the sequence of deadly apocalyptic virus leading to the emergence of giant monstrosities for quite some time recently. It may come across as cliché, especially now having seen that idea in motion many, many times before. However, given the nature of the year 2020 and the pandemic humankind currently faces, we are could see a boon in series with such themes in the seasons to come. Great Pretender - An Homage to the Greats of Art, Music, Film, and Anime

Pablo Picasso famously said, “good artists copy, great artists steal.” However, we shouldn’t take what he said literally, but as a metaphor for something deeper. What he means is that you take inspiration from those who came before you. You study their work by copying it, and understand why it resonates with the audience. Then finally, you take what you have learned and try to make something of your own. In the end, it all comes down to paying homage, and while a lot of anime does that (but of course, that’s a different topic for a different time), Netflix’s present hit, Great Pretender, pays a lot of artistic homages in the world of visual art, cinema, music, and anime itself. So, what are some artistic influences present in this comedic heist? Let us give you some clear-cut examples!

Warhol, Afremov, and Art Nouveau

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="imdb" url="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt11680468/mediaviewer/rm725789185" ]

One notable homage in the Los Angeles arc of Great Pretender is how the town, most notably Hollywood, is colored in a psychedelic manner akin to what you can see in JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure. In Great Pretender, the colors are vibrant but display a much lighter tint. This is very much in the vein of pop art, which was popularized by Andy Warhol in the 1960s. He popularized his style through his paintings of Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, and everyday products such as Coca-Cola and Campbell’s Soup as a critique of modern fame and consumer culture. In case you didn’t know, he also coined the term “fifteen minutes of fame.” Considering the nature of Hollywood, pop art is an appropriate choice to tell its story., showing the ritz, glamour, and the nitty-gritty, and this is what Warhol is trying to portray as does Great Pretender. As Great Pretender transitions to the heist in Singapore, much of the coloring and background takes inspiration from Belorussian painter Leonid Afremov. Afremov’s vibrancy in his paintings offers a different flavor than Warhol’s as they portray different themes. Through Afremov’s work, you get a feel of the nightlife or the sunset. Much of the Singapore story arc takes place in the evening or around sunset, so Afremov’s influence is consistently portrayed. However, while Afremov tends to use traditional European settings, Great Pretender applies it to the skyline of Singapore. Then when Edamura and his crew end up in Europe (mostly in France and England), the environments take influence from the softer style of Art Nouveau. In addition to giving the European households and towns a more authentic feel, it puts great emphasis that the gang is trying to steal a piece of European art.

Heist Movies and Anime

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="imdb" url="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt11680468/mediaviewer/rm332444929" ]

If there is one anime that Great Pretender obviously plays homage to, it’s one of anime’s greatest classics, Lupin III. As you take a look at the character design with the lanky proportions of the bodies of the men, and the voluptuous features of the women, you can tell that they’re influenced by Monkey Punch’s style. To top it off, Lupin III is the OG heist anime, and the way Edamura runs in a panic as he stoops is another nod to that classic. In addition to Lupin III, Great Pretender also pays homage to classic comedic heist movies (NOT THE REMAKES) such as The Italian Job (originally starring Michael Caine) and Ocean’s 11 (starring Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and Sammy Davis, Jr). Considering that Great Pretender has a large ensemble cast, it’s natural to conclude that it takes inspiration from these movies which also feature a large cast of characters who cooperate to take part in such an elaborate scheme.

Musical

As you already know, The Great Pretender by the legendary Freddie Mercury serves as the ending theme and the inspiration of the title. The song obviously tells the story of Edamura who is caught up in the world of swindling others, but deep down inside, feels like he’s losing control and can’t live a normal life. However, many of the musical influences go beyond this classic. Much of the soundtrack uses jazz and blues, just like Cowboy Bebop and Lupin III to spice up the excitement. This also goes back to Quincy Jones’ soundtrack for the Italian Job which heavily emphasizes on blues. In the London arcs, a few pop songs are used to emphasize Cynthia’s emotional turmoil.

Final Thoughts

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="imdb" url="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt11680468/mediaviewer/rm516994305" ]

As 16-time world heavyweight champion Ric Flair famously said, “imitation, is the sincerest form of flattery,” and with Great Pretender’s unique combination of numerous artistic homages, it embodies that very saying. The captivating relationship dynamics between Edamura and the crew he works with offers something fresh, and with all the unique artistic techniques applied to the backgrounds, the animation to capture the excitement, the cinematic and anime references that make you think and its emotionally appealing soundtrack, you got one heck of an anime. In addition to what we shared, what are some other artistic homages that have caught your eye in Great Pretender? If you have any we may have missed, please share your thoughts in the comments!

ReLIFE (2013) was an interesting slice of life comedy that featured a main character who found a chance to redo a part of his life that hadn’t gone so well the first time around. With that in mind, we recommend two more recent shows that have a protagonist in a similar situation to ReLIFE’s Kanzaki Arata! ReLIFE has themes of teen angst, enjoying the so-called “springtime of one’s youth”, but also learning to let go of the past and one’s self-loathing. If you like ReLIFE, you might just enjoy getting into these two titles!

17-year-old Hikigaya Hachiman is an apathetic, antisocial high schooler who believes that the popular aspects attributed to youth are just a pathetic farce. As a punishment for an essay he wrote mocking social relationships amongst his peers, his teacher forces him to join the Volunteer Service Club, a school club committed to helping students with a variety of different issues. There, Hachiman meets the school’s so-called ice queen, Yukinoshita Yukino, the only other member of the Volunteer Service Club. The two cooperate to help students with their problems, but can Hachiman really do that given his dreary outlook on life? With this story being in its third season, we’ve had a bit of time to see Hachiman slowly grow into a new perspective. The main similarity between Oregairu and ReLIFE lies in the rehabilitative aspect of their respective main characters’ arcs. Arata’s pessimism towards life stems from his feelings of inadequacy, his job-hopping, as well as the trauma he experiences after the death of his superior at his first job. Oregairu has the super pessimistic, apathetic, and rather self-loathing Hachiman, who had a bad experience with a girl once and now believes that joyful youth is just a lie. He also has no friends – you can see how hollow he is when you look at his eyes. The theme with both characters is that they have been given an opportunity to start changing themselves for the better by being forced to confront themselves in one of the most tumultuous times in a person’s life: adolescence.

Uozumi Rikuo is a university graduate working at a convenience store in Tokyo. He has a rather bleak outlook on life, but things start getting interesting when an eccentric girl named Nonaka Haru starts visiting him. When Rikuo hears that a crush he had in college is back in town, he reaches out to her so that they can pick up from where they left off. However, Morinome Shinako has been carrying heavy baggage from past experiences that render her unable to accept nor reciprocate Rikuo’s feelings. All three of them, Rikuo, Haru and Shinako have pasts that need to be left in the past so that they can move forward. A common thread between ReLIFE and Yesterday wo Utatte is the way in which the main characters of both shows have heavy baggage from the past that weighs on them in the present; however, things start moving when the main characters of each universe meet each other. They must confront the ghosts of their pasts so that they can move forward in their lives which are otherwise lives that bleed dreary monotony and stagnation.

ReLIFE was an awesome slice of life title that taught us to live our lives in the moment and take the opportunities as they come, otherwise, we may come to regret living as passengers in our own lives. Slice of life is an amazing and diverse genre and the titles we’ve mentioned are only two of many others that are like ReLIFE! If you liked ReLIFE, drop a comment below with recommendations of shows that are just like it, you might come across something you wish you’d heard about earlier!

This summer season, we have the newest anime adaptation of a Korean webcomic; The God of High School! It’s an over-the-top shounen that starts off as a martial arts tournament and gradually ramps up from there to become a global spectacle with governmental conspiracies, supernatural beings, and Stand-like superpowers called charyeok. So, while we’re all eagerly awaiting the next sakuga-filled episode, here are six shows you can check out that carry the same off-the-wall energy and fiery passion as The God of High School. Let’s jump right in!

[ad_top2 class="mt40"]

Similar Anime to The God of High School

1. Dragon Ball Z Kai 2014 (Dragon Ball Z Kai: The Final Chapters)

[sourceLink asin="B0079KGAN0" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]
[en][information_general item1 = "Episodes" content1="61" item2="Aired" content2="April 2014 – June 2015" post_id=""][/en]
[es][information_general item1 = "Episodios" content1="___content1___" item2="Emisión" content2="___content2___" post_id=""][/es]

For reasons that become increasingly obvious as it continues, The God of High School is heavily inspired by the Dragon Ball franchise. The main characters have very similar attitudes (and hairstyles), the animation can be equal parts wacky and serious, and both shows really love a good tournament arc. This trimmed down and spruced up version of the Majin Buu arc has tournaments, big impressive powerups, and larger than life villains – all of the elements that inspired its much younger descendant. If you’re interested in seeing the giant upon whose shoulders The God of High School stands, watch this season of Dragon Ball Z Kai!

2. Kami no Tou (Tower of God)

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="imdb" url="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt12057106/mediaviewer/rm4290100225" ]
[en][information_general item1 = "Episodes" content1="13" item2="Aired" content2="April 2020 – June 2020" post_id=""][/en]
[es][information_general item1 = "Episodios" content1="___content1___" item2="Emisión" content2="___content2___" post_id=""][/es]

Tower of God isn’t just on this list because it’s currently the only other Korean manhua that’s been adapted into an anime – for whatever reason, both shows are actually quite similar! Since most of the story is about the various tests required to ascend the titular tower, it’s essentially one giant tournament arc just like The God of High School. Bam and Jin Mori couldn’t be more different in terms of personality (something tells us that Mori would get along much better with the brazen alligator man Rak Wraithraiser), but they’re both good-hearted young men with as-yet-undiscovered potential who befriend plenty of odd characters who all have agendas of their own. There may even be some similarities between the suited commissioners of The God of High School and Tower of God’s unscrupulous Rankers...

3. Hunter x Hunter 2011

[en][information_general item1 = "Episodes" content1="148" item2="Aired" content2="October 2011 – September 2014" post_id=""][/en]

The classic shounen adventure Hunter x Hunter has one of the most creative and consistently written magic systems ever made, and some of its best battles are considered legendary among fans of the genre. Gon’s harrowing journey to become a Hunter and find his father is a fair bit darker than Mori’s colorful adventures tend to be, but if you’re up for a more mature tone, this anime’s expertly choreographed fights and inspired application of superpowers is sure to entertain you for the many, many hours it will take to finish it. Just don’t get too invested and catch all the way up with the manga... it’s nicknamed Hiatus x Hiatus for a reason.

4. JoJo no Kimyou na Bouken Part 3: Stardust Crusaders (JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders)

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="WHV-1000544324" text="" url="" ]
[en][information_general item1 = "Episodes" content1="24" item2="Aired" content2="April 2014 – September 2014" post_id=""][/en]
[es][information_general item1 = "Episodios" content1="___content1___" item2="Emisión" content2="___content2___" post_id=""][/es]

Even though charyeok powers are technically borrowed from other historical or mythological figures instead of coming from one’s own fighting spirit, they look and act a lot like Stands. So, if you’re in the mood for that particular flavor of fight, why not check out the very part of JoJo Stands originated from? Stardust Crusaders has the most straightforward Stand battles in the series (but they’re still tense and entertaining), its road trip structure resembles a tournament arc since villains show up one at a time to get their asses summarily beat, and its relatively simple plot is easy to get into even if you don’t know much about the rest of the series. Plus, if you love The God of High School’s occasional dalliances with absurdist comedy, the borderline surreal atmosphere of this show will be right up your alley.

5. Baki

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="B08CHDBQTV" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]
[en][information_general item1 = "Episodes" content1="26" item2="Aired" content2="June 2018 – December 2018" post_id=""][/en]
[es][information_general item1 = "Episodios" content1="___content1___" item2="Emisión" content2="___content2___" post_id=""][/es]

Was JoJo not muscular enough for you? Baki can fix that. This show is nothing but chiseled muscular men fighting each other to death with martial arts that range from honorable, traditional styles to underhanded tactics like sneaking explosives into the ring. It’s unabashedly violent (a la Fist of the North Star), serious to the point of absurdity, and just a whole lot of dumb fun to watch. If the God of High School tournament administrators didn’t have that super healing technology to use after every bone-crunching bout, the matches would probably look a lot more like something out of Baki. This ONA is a criminally underwatched gem, so give it some love if you get the chance!

6. One Punch Man

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="BCBA-4966" text="" url="" ]
[en][information_general item1 = "Episodes" content1="12" item2="Aired" content2="October 2015 – December 2015" post_id=""][/en]
[es][information_general item1 = "Episodios" content1="___content1___" item2="Emisión" content2="___content2___" post_id=""][/es]

Was Baki not hilariously overpowered enough for you? One Punch Man can fix that. Saitama’s homemade costume and constantly vacant expression may make him look unthreatening, but he’s actually the strongest being on the planet and can vaporize any potential threat with just one punch. Studio Madhouse (who also made Hunter x Hunter 2011) brings every one-sided fight to life with gorgeous sakuga animation that can stand right next to MAPPA’s work on The God of High School, and even the less action-oriented moments ripple with personality due to their strong attention to detail. Can we just watch sakuga compilations of these two shows on loop forever?

Final Thoughts

If these six anime haven’t satiated your God of High School fix, try The Seven Deadly Sins, Killing Bites, My Hero Academia, or even Food Wars! You’ll find plenty of hot-blooded fighting fury no matter which show you choose. What did you think of our list? Did we leave out any anime that you think resemble The God of High School? Let us know in the comments, and thanks so much for reading!

Super Mario 3D All-Stars, Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit and Game & Watch: Super Mario Bros. All Launching This Year!

[en]What You Need to Know: [/en][es]Lo que necesitas saber: [/es]

    • Mario has come a long way since jumping on that first Goomba in World 1-1 of the original Super Mario Bros. game. Now, 35 years since the launch of that game in Japan, he is starring in new games on the Nintendo Switch system, lending his likeness to brands like LEGO®, PUMA and Monopoly, and watching as fans battle it out using Super Mario power-ups in Splatoon 2.
    • In a new video presentation released today, Nintendo detailed several games, products and in-game events that are all arriving for the 35th anniversary of Super Mario Bros. This includes games new to the Nintendo Switch family of systems like Super Mario 3D All-Stars, a collection of three Super Mario games of the modern era, Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine and Super Mario Galaxy; Super Mario Bros. 35, a 35-player online battle in the world of the original Super Mario Bros. game; and Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury, an enhanced version of the Super Mario 3D World game which originally launched on Wii U.
    • Additionally, the video revealed other Super Mario experiences launching this year, like Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit, which brings the fun of the Mario Kart series to the real world using the Nintendo Switch system to control a real-life, physical Kart; the launch of the classic Super NES game Super Mario All-Stars on Nintendo Switch Online later today*; and a new Nintendo product called Game & Watch: Super Mario Bros., a mini gaming device inspired by the retro Game & Watch systems that plays the original Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels and Ball games.
    • The full video presentation can be viewed here: http://supermario35.com/. Check out the highlights below!

    [en]Source: [/en][es]Fuente: [/es]Official Press Release

“We look forward to everyone joining us on a Mario journey 35 years in the making. We are marking this significant milestone with a wide variety of games and experiences that all generations of Mario fans, from here to the Mushroom Kingdom, can enjoy together.”

Doug Bowser, Nintendo of America President

Super Mario 35th Anniversary Direct Highlights

    • Super Mario 3D All-Stars: Optimized versions of 3D Mario games Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine and Super Mario Galaxy are coming to Nintendo Switch in one package. In addition to having higher resolutions than their original versions, the games have been optimized for a smooth gameplay experience on Nintendo Switch. Super Mario 3D All-Stars also includes an in-game music-player mode to play the music and songs from all three games. Players can also listen to music on their Nintendo Switch systems when the screen is off. A limited production of Super Mario 3D All-Stars launches exclusively for the Nintendo Switch family of systems on Sept. 18 and will be available until approximately March 31, 2021.
    • Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit: Created in partnership with Velan Studios, Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit brings the fun of the Mario Kart series into the real world by using a Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch Lite system to race against opponents using a physical Kart. The physical Kart responds to boosts in-game and in the real world, stops when hit with an item and can be affected in different ways depending on the race. Players place gates to create a custom course layout in their home, where the only limit is their imagination. Race against Koopalings in Grand Prix, unlock a variety of course customizations and costumes for Mario or Luigi, and play with up to four players in local multiplayer mode. Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit, which is available in a Mario Set or Luigi Set, launches on Oct. 16 at a suggested retail price of $99.99.
    • Game & Watch: Super Mario Bros.: This new collectable device is inspired by the original Game & Watch systems first released in 1980. The original handheld device included a game, and could also be used as a watch to tell time. The original Game & Watch series sold more than 43 million worldwide. Game & Watch: Super Mario Bros. features a modern +Control Pad. In addition to playing classic games Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels (released in Japan as Super Mario Bros. 2) and a special version of Ball with a Mario makeover, Game & Watch: Super Mario Bros. also functions as a clock, with 35 little touches to discover, including some guest appearances from Mario’s friends and foes. Game & Watch: Super Mario Bros. launches on Nov. 13 at a suggested retail price of $49.99.
    • Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury: Multiplayer mayhem pounces onto Nintendo Switch! This enhanced Super Mario 3D World, which originally launched for the Wii U system, features co-op gameplay both online* and through local multiplayer in a variety of creative levels. In the fictional world of Shokugeki no Souma—Food Wars! in English—we have seen numerous chefs that have proven their talents time after time. It’s easy to say that some of these chefs could even give the likes of Gordon Ramsey a challenge! The battles various these characters have fought through have tested their cooking prowess and allowed us viewers to even learn a few recipes to master ourselves! As the series winds down with this final season—Shokugeki no Souma: Gou no Sara—we decided it’s time to list who the top ten best chefs are of the entire series! Our list won’t just be based on looks or fights won but if these chefs truly have the soul of what a chef should be!

    [ad_top2 class="mt40 mb40"]

    10. Megumi Tadokoro

    [sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="crunchyroll" url="http://www.crunchyroll.com/food-wars-shokugeki-no-soma/episode-11-the-magician-from-the-east-678181" ]

Megumi Tadokoro first comes off as an overly shy girl who wouldn’t do that well compared to some of the other students of Totsuki Saryo Culinary Institute, but over the course of the next few seasons of Shokugeki no Souma, Megumi shows her talents and becomes a truly impressive chef. Thanks to her aptitude for using fresh vegetables and putting her heart—and home skills—into every meal, Megumi quickly shows she isn’t to be dismissed for her demeanor. Megumi even makes one of the hardest dishes—Goosefish Dobu-Jiru Curry—which is considered quite impressive at the Autumn Election! Megumi now is rank 10 in the Elite Ten—fitting for her rank on our list—and has already begun to hone her skills beyond what she ever thought was possible!

    9. Ikumi Mito

    [sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="sentai" url="" ]

Easily one of the more attractive chefs from Shokugeki no Souma—and most well-endowed of the cast—Ikumi Mito was once an enemy turned ally to Soma but that’s to be expected of a powerful chef. Known as the Meat Master—which can be a bit strange to say outloud—Mito knows her way around a steak like no one else. Mito has crafted some amazing A5 ranked dishes but one of our personal favorites was the 15 Japanese Beef Roti Don that she crafted to defeat Soma. This rich beef and rice dish still makes our mouths water and while she did lose to Soma using this dish, the battle was quite close. Mito still has a lot to learn about cooking but as of now, she’s a meat master that can truly cook any slice of beef with relative ease.

    8. Ryo Kurokiba

    [sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="crunchyroll" url="https://www.crunchyroll.com/food-wars-shokugeki-no-soma/episode-23-the-competition-of-the-blossoming-individuals-682525" ]

Stoic Ryo Kurokiba almost always looks like he’s ready to take a long nap. However, those who know of his true nature also know that Ryo is no slouch in the kitchen. When Ryo dons his iconic red with fire emblazed swimmer’s cap, Ryo changes into the Mad Dog a chef that almost looks ready for a street fight! Ryo’s talents come from his upbringing around fishermen and various seafood themed dishes. Ryo is easily one of the best at cooking sea-based meals as evident by even making ramen into a seafood delight—Soupe De Poisson Ramen! If you ever run into a gloomy stoic chef remember that behind that façade might lie a chef ready to turn the kitchen into a warzone!

    7. Takumi Aldini

    [sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="crunchyroll" url="https://www.crunchyroll.com/food-wars-shokugeki-no-soma/episode-9-the-first-and-second-seats-789637" ]

Italian chef Takumi Aldini and his brother—Isami—prove that food transcends all barriers! Like many other chefs, Takumi was originally a rival to Soma and those who he felt were beneath his skills. As the series progressed, Takumi realized that despite Soma’s occasionally odd personality, the skills a chef needs far outweighed his annoying mannerisms. Takumi has made several stellar dishes that have proven his skills time after time but our favorite is the incredibly intriguing Doppio Mezzaluna Pizza which makes us wish we could order delivery from Takumi! Similar to Megumi, Takumi has made his way to the 7th seat of the Elite Ten and we feel he has earned that right!

    6. Subaru Mimasaka

    [sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="imdb" url="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4731072/mediaviewer/rm1904260353" ]

The world of Shokugeki no Souma has a strange cast of characters—as evident from our list—but easily one of the most bizarre is the copycat-like chef known as Subaru Mimasaka. More akin to a walking tank than a chef, Subaru looks like he should fight in a pro wrestling ring more than cook delicious meals. Despite his looks, Subaru excels at something very few chefs can do…mirror other chef’s creations to the letter! Using a mixture of stalking and analysis—though heavy on the stalking—Subaru copies his rival chef to the letter in both their cooking abilities and styles. Despite his creepy—but powerful—ability, Subaru is an amazing chef as evident of his dishes like the Ten Pieces of Tuna Ruby Orbs Sushi With Gunkan Maki or Beef Stew with Bacon Garnish. Subaru…we’d love you more if you weren’t such a stalking odd ball but we will admit your dishes look incredible.

    [ad_middle class="mb40"]

    5. Akira Hayama

    [sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="crunchyroll" url="https://www.crunchyroll.com/food-wars-shokugeki-no-soma/episode-17-the-umami-tightrope-769055" ]

Any chef will tell you that you can have the best ingredients and best skills but if you can’t use spices…your dish will just look beautiful but taste bland. That’s why Akira Hayama makes our fifth spot of our top 10 chef list. Originally in the second-lowest spot on the Elite Ten’s list, Akira still was a challenge for Soma due in large part to his ability to uses spices unlike any other. Akira made a laundry list of various dishes in Shokugeki no Souma but our favorite is the Fried Bear which seems like a truly challenging dish to make! Akira has proven his talents to Soma and his allies/enemies on numerous occasions propelling himself to the 4th seat of the Elite Ten. Now let’s hope one day we master our spice racks so we can make even the blandest looking dish taste incredible.

    4. Rindo Kobayashi

    [sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="crunchyroll" url="http://www.crunchyroll.com/food-wars-shokugeki-no-soma/episode-5-the-darkening-dinner-table-749173" ]

Easily one of the most attractive females from the Shokugeki no Soma franchise, Rindo Kobayashi didn’t just make our list using her beauty. Rindo is probably one of the flirtiest female chefs of our list but that flirtatious personality hides a dangerous chef with truly remarkable skills! Unlike most of the characters of Shokugeki no Souma Rindo can use knives as if she was a master swordswoman! Rindo uses these knife skills to create exotic dishes using exotic creatures such as alligator and spear squid. In our opinions, Rindo’s most delicious looking dish is her Laziji Caiman—using alligator instead of chicken—which looks spicy but truly mouthwatering. We just pray Rindo keeps using her knives in the kitchen only and not on any guys that might make the wrong moves on her…

    3. Asahi Nakiri (Originally Asahi Saiba)

With a criminal upbringing, Asahi Nakiri—stepbrother to Erina—is no slouch in the cooking game. Using his signature Cross Knives style, Asahi has battled numerous chefs and once he wins he takes their knives to add to his large collection. While Asahi Nakiri has only really become more relevant in the final season of Shokugeki no Souma, he earned his third spot on our list as he is the only one who has defeated the legendary chef—and father to our main man Soma—Joichiro Yukihira. One of the few dishes we’ve seen made by Asahi was his Tonkatsu with Crème Chantilly that proved his talents aren’t to be kept hidden from the world. Asahi has definitely had a tough and dangerous life but as a chef he has changed his fate and made his future a bright one!

    2. Soma Yukihira

    [sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="crunchyroll" url="https://www.crunchyroll.com/food-wars-shokugeki-no-soma/episode-4-aim-for-victory-789632" ]

Shokugeki no Souma’s main star Soma Yukiria has always been destined to be one of the best chefs of the series. Despite his humble upbringing of making ramen dishes and strange—sometimes inedible—creations, Soma has grown exceptionally through the story by learning from various other chefs and absorbing their teachings. Soma has won—and lost—several dozen times through the series but each battle has increased his abilities to the point that he has gained one of the coveted seats of the Elite Ten despite his skills being tested to their limits! Soma has created possibly some of the most dishes in all of Shookugeki no Souma but one of his earliest creations—the Roast Pork, Just Kidding—is still the best looking in our minds. Soma is a goofball when he’s not cooking but once that white headband gets placed on his headband, the goofy Soma becomes a chef with no limits!

    1. Joichiro Yukihira

    [sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="crunchyroll" url="https://www.crunchyroll.com/food-wars-shokugeki-no-soma/episode-1-an-endless-wasteland-678161" ]

Known far and wide, Soma’s father Joichiro Yukihira is hands down the best chef of the Shokugeki no Souma franchise. Joichiro has never lost an official Shokugeki and his talents seem to be known to every chef worldwide! Due to his serious travels worldwide, Joichiro was able to harness numerous styles across the world and that led him to obtain skills far beyond the capacity of others. Joichiro even has his own small ramen shop that sells incredibly beloved ramen that occasionally is run by Soma. Of the dishes we’ve seen Joichiro make our personal favorite is his special Rich Ramen that just looks so gorgeous! Joichiro might not win father of the year award for his odd parenting but we still love him as a chef and feel he is second to none!

    Final Thoughts

Being a chef is easily one of the most difficult jobs a person can have with their very talents being constantly tested. However, chefs take this challenge on with pride as they have a mission…to be the best cooks they can be and make people smile with their amazing dishes. The chefs we named above from our list have indeed proven their skills in Shokugeki no Souma and we feel they earn their spots on this top 10. Do you have different opinions though? Comment below with your top ten chefs of Shokugeki no Souma as we’d love to see your opinions! Be sure to keep stuck to our delicious—but not edible—hive here at Honey’s Anime!

Interview with Rock M. Sakura & Kamui Cosplay (Svetlana Quindt)
    [gray-hex-decoration]
Honey’s Anime: Since you both have a large presence on YouTube, what do you find rewarding about creating YouTube videos as opposed to your other creative outlets?
Rock M. Sakura: YouTube has always been my brand and type of comedy. I’ve been on YouTube since 2003 when people were uploading episodes of Keroro Gunsou in 3 parts (it was the easiest way for a poor person to watch anime without buying DVD boxsets). I think that there's a certain level of creativity in YouTube videos that you just can’t create in other mediums. I love performing in person, but on YouTube, I can create a contemporary level of cringe that audiences of the platform will get. Also, YouTube videos have so much longevity, and create a brand and memorability for you.
Kamui Cosplay: YouTube gives me a great platform to show a little bit more about myself. My followers often mention that they actually read my social media posts in my voice and with my accent because they have watched so many videos from me. YouTube is on a completely different level when it comes to creating a connection with someone. Very similar to streaming. I just enjoy doing silly jokes, talking about something that’s important to me and showing my work in much more detail. I also think that people enjoy my personality and so they are always very excited about every new video, even though some of them are even not interested in cosplay or crafting.
Honey’s Anime: Rock, have you found the drag community to be a diverse and accepting place (referring to race, gender, body type, etc.)? How do the anime and drag communities compare in this regard?
Rock M. Sakura: The drag community in San Francisco is definitely a very diverse and accepting place. We have so many people of different backgrounds, and that's one of the reasons that I was attracted to the scene here and felt so included. When I first started cosplaying, I felt that there was a lot of pressure to be a certain body type, a certain gender, and certain paleness that I had to be in order to cosplay. There just weren’t that many characters that were male and my body type that I was interested in. I definitely felt that the drag scene was more gay-friendly, and less heteronormative. But coming back into the cosplay world now, it can still feel like there's a good amount of misogyny, but it's definitely more inclusive for LGBTQ+ people.
Honey’s Anime: Svetlana, you’ve written books on just about every aspect of cosplay there is. When researching a new topic, do you prefer to discover on your own or do you ask other cosplay friends for help?
Kamui Cosplay: I’m actually used to working only with my husband Benni. I would love to collaborate more with other cosplayers, but most of my friends are in the US and Canada and the time difference alone makes it already quite challenging. However, I follow plenty of cosplayers and amazing artists online and their content gives me plenty of new ideas to try out something new on my own. For my books, I even have around 15 proofreaders and most of them are crafters as well. So, they sometimes point out something essential that I totally forgot, and I add it before actually publishing, for example. I’m really thankful for their support!
Honey’s Anime: Thank you so much for your time! We’ll look forward to seeing you both at the Cosplay Cup this Saturday!

    Final Thoughts

Rock M. Sakura and Kamui Cosplay are clearly very passionate about what they do, from cringy YouTube humor and makeup to complex armor patterns and books. We’re sure they’ll bring a unique flavor to this weekend’s Cosplay Cup, so be sure to check it out to see what happens! Let us know in the comments if you’re planning on attending, and thanks so much for reading!

    Honey-Chan
Interview with Mario Bueno & Vampy Bit Me (Linda Le)
    [gray-hex-decoration]
What drew you to the anime community and convention culture?
Oh man, hahaha...one thing really led to the other, and some of this I’m happy to say I’ve covered in the first two episodes of the DEE Kai (会) podcast where the team and I discuss our “anime origins”, but since you asked, I’m happy to revisit my early days! As I’d realize when looking back on how I got to my starting point, it was clear I’d always had an affinity for Japanese popular culture, though in my younger years I’d never really recognized it was what it was (outside of video games which had VERY explicit Japanese influence stamped on them…being born in 1985 and named “Mario” basically guaranteed this from birth I’d say, hahaha). My earliest brushes beyond requisites like Godzilla and other tokusatsu were the 1991 Ultraman series (Ultraman: Towards the Future), Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers, and so forth. Even Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie didn’t fully register to me as “anime”, though it didn’t help that it was not quite accessible to me at the time either, so it felt “exotic” and unreachable until I’d get into anime and properly watch it. But it wasn’t until my early teenage years when the “Japanimation” thing I kept seeing advertised at local video stores (as well as via indie theaters advertising Ghost in the Shell and the SyFy channel back when it was actually spelled properly, hahaha) began to pique my interest and show up in popular culture more because of the rise of Pokémon’s popularity and the “Toonami Boom” circa 2000. I also regularly attribute my first girlfriend for being the one to inspire me to give anime a proper chance at that time, and thanks to a combination of her love of Revolutionary Girl Utena (which I recognize as my first “proper” anime that I knowingly sat down to watch) and being introduced to Gundam Wing (which led to me discovering Gunpla and, by proxy, the rest of the Gundam metaseries that’s become my all-time favorite), I jumped headfirst into the fandom and never looked back. My old convention guest bios used to start by saying I was “[a] fan of Japanese Animation since 2000, convention attendee since 2001, and cosplayer since 2002,” because that’s more or less how things went in that EXACT sequence: once I knew about anime and learned about the first-ever Big Apple Anime Fest in 2001 (which ran for three years and would later be followed by ReedPop’s New York Anime Fest and now LeftField Media’s AnimeNYC...each either organized by or heavily prepared by many of the same key members!), I’d attend that and cosplay for the first time at the following year’s iteration, which was a joint show with Anime Expo. While I was no stranger to “conventions” in general (I’d been to tech/auto shows and other “nerdy/sci-fi” events before), I treat my initial steps into anime convention culture as something entirely different because of how it was fed by a desire to be exposed to more of the culture and forge new friendships (as well as have new outlets to perform at, once I learned about cosplay masquerade)... as well as how much it’s tied directly into my growth both as a person and professional.
I grew up an anime fan as long as I remember. When I was 5 years old, I was introduced to anime and manga by my mother and father. My mom bought me Doraemon manga and also got us VHS of anime that came out. It was expensive back then, so my brothers and I shared with each other. So, I can pretty much say I’ve been a fan before I even knew what conventions were like. Convention culture wasn’t part of my life until I could afford it. I was very steady in getting an education, so I saved a lot and worked a lot. So, when I was ready to just spend money on cosplay, I kinda went all out in 2006 I would say. Around 2009 I was full-blown crazy about conventions because I could afford it and had the means to. Work came first because without work I couldn’t afford the things I loved.
Mario, how do you think hosting/emceeing will evolve to fit the socially distanced world we live in right now? Have you been able to stay involved with the community?
This is a wonderful question, so extra thanks for throwing this one my way since it’s something I’ve actively been pondering since the current global situation began! I’d posit that thanks to the expanded regularity and accessibility of streaming/casting (due to the rise of Twitch as a widely adopted broadcasting platform and the popularization of Esports and such), there’s a good template to build from. Fortunately, I’ve been able to get my feet wet with livestreaming thanks to the work we’ve been doing at Digital Era Entertainment since we officially launched our Twitch channel with the first episode of our Esports/gaming podcast DEE CODE on New Year’s Day 2018 (I personally started actively streaming there on a regular basis in 2019...also on New Year’s Day, no less, haha), and I think that anyone who’s hosted live events before and will be hosting remote events until further notice would benefit from that experience if they don’t already have it! There are certainly challenges to this version of hosting (for example, the lack of a live audience to “feed” off of or know how to adjust a performance based on visible/audible reactions versus text in an ongoing stream of chat), and it honestly does intimidate me a bit going into this particular situation because of how many more variables there are from the audience AND the production end of things, but I’m glad that I’ve at least had the opportunity to regularly stream for close to two years now in order to know how best to adjust!
Linda, you’ve mentioned in a 2013 interview with AsiaOne that you’d like to create your own line of costumes and toys one day. Could you elaborate on your vision for that?
Oh man, I would love to make my own mecha toys someday with my original designs! Currently, it’s on hold because of my work, but when I’m ready, I want to really work those ideas out! I love mecha design so much. If I could make mecha style fashion or ready to wear cosplay I would love to do that too!
Thank you so much for your time! We’re looking forward to seeing you online this Saturday for the Cosplay Cup!

    Final Thoughts

Both Mario and Linda are lovely, creative people who have adored the anime community for many years. They’re sure to bring tons of energy and excitement to the Virtual Crunchyroll Expo’s Cosplay Cup this weekend, even though all of us are scattered to the winds. Let us know in the comments if you’re planning on attending, and thanks so much for reading!

Crunchyroll couldn’t let us go without allowing us to talk with the creators of the light novel and upcoming anime “So I’m a Spider, So What”. The story of a normal high school girl who in the blink of an eye, woke up reborn as a spider, in a fantasy dungeon. The clever team of Okina Baba and Tsukasa Kiryu took the time to answer some of our questions about the inspiration for this rather creative take on the isekai story.

Interview with Tsukasa Kiryul and Okina Baba (So I’m a Spider, So What)

What did you think when you were approached to draw an illustration in a story where the lead was a spider?
Tsukasa KiryuI: I was thankful for being chosen despite there being very few examples of novels where the monster is the protagonist, and countless other illustrators that can draw both monsters and humans. Once I was told which series it was, I started reading it and couldn’t put it down because it was so interesting. I spent about three sleepless days reading it, and slept for a while after that.
What is your opinion that has made this light novel series successful? Is it its uniqueness in a market of isekai novels?
Tsukasa KiryuI: I think it’s the charm of Kumoko and her ultra-positivity. You just want to root for her as you’re reading. There’s also the excitement of seeing how Kumiko, the weakest in the dungeon, will overcome the predicaments that’s continually thrown at her, the appeal of each character’s belief systems and way of life, and the mysteries of the world and characters. These aspects are interesting because they’re rooted in universal values and themes, making it easy to relate and emphasize.
Do you have a mangaka that inspires you to imagine the characters/creatures you create?
Tsukasa KiryuI: My inspiration for design comes more from movies and games instead of manga. For mangaka that inspired me for illustration instead of characters, there’s Kenji Tsuruta, Tsutomu Nihei, Yasuhiro Nightow, and Kozue Amano.
We see many different types of protagonists in anime, not only humans, but centaurs, and vampires but a spider is new! The only spider we can think of in literature is Charlotte in E.B. Whites Charlotte's Web. What was the inspiration for this novel and its eight-legged lead?
Okina Baba: Half it was just thought up on the spot. (Laughs) The other half were the end result of a chain of ideas. I would think, “This is a good idea!” and then I would think, “Well based on that idea if I do this and then that…”
Did the novel’s plot reveal itself to you all at once or did you have to slowly work it out?
Okina Baba: I decided on the overall plot before I started writing. Then I worked on the details of the story to fit into the plot.
How does it feel to have your first manga title being adapted into an anime?
Okina Baba: Honestly, it still doesn’t feel real. I understand how amazing getting an anime adaption is, but when it comes to my own series the weight of it hasn’t sunk in…

You have been a Japan and Anime/Manga industry watcher for decades. The current feeling in the otaku community is that Anime and Manga are under assault by puritanical forces that are getting books banned from bookshelves and pulled from amazon kindle. Yet, there are those who see this kind of thing as an ebb and flow of culture. Do you think this is just part of a cyclical cultural backlash or are the industry creatives under threat from these more conservative elements?
Roland Kelts: In Japan, I definitely see this kind of thing as an ebb and flow. Some years ago there was a movement in the Tokyo government to censor manga and anime driven by now-retired conservative firebrand governor Shinto Ishihara. This was taken up by local conservative groups and Parent-Teacher Associations. Finally it wound down with the national government outlawing the possession of child pornography. I spoke in defense of the manga and anime industries on CNN here. My point was that outlawing actual pornography was a government’s responsibility and a mark of civilization. But censoring the human imagination by defining and restricting works of fiction, whether illustrations or stories or both, was the first step down a proverbial slippery slope. In fact, the manga and anime industries had volunteered to monitor themselves, and to restrict access to adult-oriented media. They knew how to handle it, and they did. I’m less optimistic about the US. The self-righteousness, factionalism, xenophobia and hysterical religious fundamentalism surging through US culture right now make me wonder how manga and anime have somehow slipped under the moralistic radar for this long. In fact, just a couple of months ago a US politician called Dragon Ball Z “depraved anime porn.” Ugh.
The anime industry still self restricts its content with regional locking. Is there a practical reason for this? Is there a reason a show or even a preview on youtube to be “unavailable in your region”? Or is this an antiquated business model that Japan has failed to adapt too? The common-sense approach would be to reach as many viewers/consumers as possible.
Roland Kelts: There are companies whose survival depends upon profiting in some way from products that can be sold at a certain price only in a certain market. In the cases you’re describing, these are usually media products that can be sold at a premium in Japan, where CDs, DVDs and even some streaming media products typically cost a lot more than they do in the US. By restricting the content with region locks, they’re hoping to limit their product sales to the consumers who will pay for them. I’m sympathetic, but I would also use the term you propose: antiquated. Their model is and has been dying, and will continue to die. It’s no longer just a ‘whac-a-mole’ approach to survival. It’s a “whac-a-million-moles, and then some.” Borders are now porous, physically and intellectually. Cultivating your new market should take precedence over protecting your old one.
Zeke-senpai interviewed an animator more than 30 years ago who said the reason Japanese Animation and Cinema is fixated on the country’s destruction or dark dystopian worlds is that they had the bomb dropped on them. We are now 75 years from that event and most of the survivors have passed on and even their children are “old” at this point. Is the trauma of that event so ingrained in the cultural memory that it can’t be forgotten (not saying that it should) or is it just a simple plot device for setting and drama?
Roland Kelts: I agree with your implication: the atomic bomb hasn’t had a direct influence on Japanese artists for generations. In fact, as far back as the late 1960s and early 70s, Japanese artists were more likely to be informed by the Vietnam War and domestic social upheavals like the student protests over the US-Japan Security Treaty (ANPO) than the bomb. And Japan, which is the most earthquake-prone nation in the world, beset by tsunami, typhoons and volcanoes, has enough natural disasters and layers of official and back-alley corruption to create stories of destruction and dark dystopian worlds to last many lifetimes. Still, I’m now working on a book in partnership with Crunchyroll for the publisher Hachette that is a guide to great anime through the years. And as I write about various series and films, it’s hard to argue that the national experience and echoes of the war, and the sheer psychological enormity of the atomic bombs, have had no far-reaching impacts on Japanese artists, even if they’re only imagined. Early manga and anime, from Osamu Tezuka to Shigeru Mizuki to Keiji Nakazawa’s classic Barefoot Gen, arguably created a template for exploring the psychological and physical horrors of mass destruction, physical deformity and persistent nightmares and maladies that could be and would be used by successive waves of artists and writers in the years to follow. Mr. Kelts wasn’t the only guest that Crunchyroll Expo connected us with, we got to interview Arthell Isom the CEO of Japan based anime studio D’ART Shtajio. Arthell’s success in the very Japan-centric world of anime is an amazing one making him someone we had to ask questions of.
The business culture in japan often provides resistance to foreign-owned companies doing “uniquely Japanese” things in Japan. You may have built up a lot of credibility before establishing your company but you still were an outsider opening an easily arguably uniquely Japanese thing- producing anime. Did the industry welcome you or did you find it a struggle to establish D’ART Shtajio?
Arthell Isom: We’re always honored to be included amongst Japanese anime studios. Perhaps because of our tenure here prior to starting D’ART we’ve always felt welcomed and have been able to work with the other studios.
The animation industry in Japan has on occasion had a reputation as being a slog filled with overworked and underpaid staff. We’ve seen in recent years some studios attempting to change that image, for example, Kyoto Animation has become known as the school and training ground for animation and P.A. Works moving out of Tokyo and striving to give their staff a friendlier work-life balance. What work environment do you want to foster at D’ART Dhtajio?
Arthell Isom: Work life balance, liveable wages, and an enjoyable work culture are really important to us at D’ART. Being a start-up we deal with the difficulties all startups in every industry deal with but it’s definitely our goal to be one of the studios artists/ employees enjoy and can grow comfortably.
The people that watch anime can usually identify a distinctive style in the animation, you can tell it is a show is Studio Trigger by its exaggerated action or UFOtable by its crisp clean lines and digital overlays or Kyoto animation with its attention to detail and cinema-quality stories. What do you think your trademark looks like as a studio?
Arthell Isom: We get asked this often, but I feel we are still on our journey to discovering D’ART’s look. It’ll become clearer as we do larger productions and really get comfortable with who we are.
