Like moths to a flame, human beings seem to have an innate fascination with the dark side. A few hundred years ago, during the height of literary Romanticism, the genre of Gothicism emerged, entrancing people from all walks of life to the nooks and crannies that lurk within the darkest shadows. This fascination never really left man, it seems, since people to this day remain drawn to things that are dark and gothic. This is prominent in a lot of things, including anime, which features storylines and characters that lie very close to the darkness. In fact, characters of the dark have become quite endearing in anime, with a good number of them being deconstructions of their usual depictions. Thus, anime is rife with demon girls who have good hearts, and girls of the dark that look for nothing but the pureness of love. In this list, we will be exploring ten of anime’s most notable demon girls. Here goes the Top 10 Demon Girls in anime.

[ad_top2 class="mt40"]

10. Rias Gremory from High School DxD

[imageCharacterWithAnime character='highschool cosplay rias00' anime='highschool dxd dvd']
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" January 2012 - March 2012 "]

One cannot think of demon girls in anime and miss Rias Gremory of High School DxD. The red-haired, busty beauty of this ecchi, harem anime not only has killer looks, she has killer powers as well. Born into the prestigious House of Gremory, Rias is imbued with the Powers of Destruction, a rare ability that disintegrates matter, both living and inanimate. Despite her great power however, she still retains a soft spot for her perverted love, Issei, and she never hesitates when it comes to going to great lengths to protect him. A demon through and through, Rias is the first girl in our list.

9. Yura, the Hair Demon from Inuyasha

[imageCharacterWithAnime character='Yura, the Hair Demon Inuyasha' anime='Inuyasha-DVD']
[Information episodes=" 167 " aired=" October 2000 - September 2004 "]

Yura is a hair demon that challenged Inuyasha during the first episodes of the anime series. She reveres hair, to the point of her practically worshipping it. In fact, she is so enamored with Inuyasha’s hair that she desired to kill him for it. She uses her hair in a variety of ways, from weapons to tools of manipulation. Eventually, it took both Inuyasha and Kagome’s combined efforts to fully bring her down. Though Yura appeared very briefly on the show, she was nonetheless very notable among fans due to the fact that she was the first real threat to Inuyasha and Kagome. She is also the first enemy that was so powerful, the anime’s main pair had to work together to defeat her.

8. Mirajane Strauss from Fairy Tail

[imageCharacterWithAnime character='fairy tail Mirajane Strauss' anime='dvd Fairy Tail']
[Information episodes=" 175 " aired=" October 2009 - March 2013 "]

Mirajane is one of the sweetest girls you’ll ever be introduced to in Fairy Tail. Apart from her extremely sweet persona, she is also very pretty, as proven by the fact that she has posed for Sorcerer’s Magazine multiple times as the guild’s poster girl. Though her outward persona is that of a petite, harmless girl, Mirajane hides immense power inside her. In fact, during her past, she was even the rival of Erza, one of Fairy Tail’s most powerful mages. Eventually, during the battle between Freed and Elfman, Mirajane finally snaps, unleashing the immense power inside her. As it turns out, her true power, called Take Over: Satan Soul, is one of the most powerful in the guild. She easily overwhelms Freed, who, despite using his demon powers himself, can simply not hold a candle against this innocent-looking, gentle, demoness.

7. Nerine from Shuffle!

[imageCharacterWithAnime character='Nerine Shuffle!' anime='shuffle dvd']
[Information episodes=" 24 " aired=" July 2005 - January 2006 "]

Nerine, or Rin, is the only daughter of the King of the Devils. However, her demeanor and disposition is completely the opposite of her family background. Behind her bloodline and dark magic, which she does unleash at times, lies a sweet, good-natured girl who likes nothing more than to love and be loved. Personality-wise, Rin is demure, speaking in a formal manner most of the time. She is also very shy, especially in relation to her beautiful voice, which is so beautiful that it is dubbed as “Angel’s Bell.”

6. Youko Shiragami from Jitsu wa Watashi wa

[imageCharacterWithAnime character='Youko Shiragami Jitsu wa Watashi wa Actually, I Am' anime='dvd Jitsu wa Watashi wa']
[Information episodes=" 13 " aired=" July 2015 - September 2015 "]

This perky, memorable girl from the hit anime Jitsu wa Watashi wa holds the 6th place in our list today. Though she’s technically a half-vampire, she nonetheless possesses a number of characteristics of the conventional anime demon girl. Born to a vampire father and human mother, Youko goes to a school under the condition that her vampirism must be kept secret. It was a pretty fair arrangement for the pretty half-vampire, but when her secret gets discovered by Kuromine Asahi, who just happens to uncover her secret as he is about to confess his love to hear, things get very very interesting.

5. Miia from Monster Musume no Iru Nichijou

[imageCharacterWithAnime character='Miia Monster Musume no Iru Nichijou' anime='dvd Monster Musume no Iru Nichijou']
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" July 2015 - September 2015 "]

Among the girls in this list, Miia is probably the one who actually looks very inhuman by default. Born as a Lamia, a half-human, half-snake subspecies, she is one of the first nonhumans that was assimilated into the human world. Assigned as the first ward of Kurusu Kimihito, a hapless volunteer of the Cultural Exchange Between Species program, she aims to integrate herself to human society as effectively as she can. Everything’s not that simple though, as her arrival essentially turns her ward’s life upside down. Despite her nonhuman appearance though, Miia is extremely sweet, naive and carefree. She also has a knack of being very clingy when she sleeps. Eventually, Kurusu starts getting attracted to the buxom and pretty Miia, but there’s only one problem - the law on interbreeding between humans and nonhumans is extremely strict.

4. Yuka Kamitsuki from Kemonozume

[imageCharacterWithAnime character='Yuka Kamitsuki Kemonozume' anime='dvd Kemonozume']
[Information episodes=" 13 " aired=" August 2006 - November 2006 "]

From this gritty, unique anime comes one of the best star-crossed lovers story aime has offered in the last decade. Yuka Kamitsuki is one of the Shokujinki, a race of flesh-eating demonic monsters that can assume human form. While working as a skydiving instructor, she falls in love with Toshihiko Momota, a man who has trained all his life to slay those of her kind. After the truth is revealed, Yuka and Toshihiko decide that love is more important in their lives than the factions that divide them. Among all the girls in this list, Yuka is probably the one that can definitely be nightmare fuel, as her appearance as a Shokujinki is nothing even remotely close to looking human.

3. Mukuro from Yu Yu Hakusho

[imageCharacterWithAnime character='Mukuro Yu Yu Hakusho' anime='yu yu hakusho dvd']
[Information episodes=" 112 " aired=" October 1992 to January 1995 "]

Among all the girls in this list, Mukuro is probably the most intimidating due to the sheer amount of power she holds within her. Classified as a Superior S Class Demon, she is one of the Three Kings of the Demon World, and is said to be the second most powerful among the Three Kings during her prime. In the manga, it was stated that the only one who holds more power than her is Raizen in his prime. She was closely related to one of the main characters in the series, Hiei, whom she fought in the final tournament of Yu Yu Hakusho’s plot. However, it was stated that she actually hold back her power during the tournament, in order to give her competitors a fair fight. Ruthless, powerful, and somehow even beautiful, Mukuro is arguably one of the strongest demons in anime.

2. Priscilla from Claymore

[imageCharacterWithAnime character='Priscilla Claymore' anime='Claymore']
[Information episodes=" 26 " aired=" April 2007 - September 2007 "]

Among the ridiculously powerful awakened beings in the Claymore universe, Priscilla is the one that arguably holds the most notoriety. It is said that she is one of the most powerful Claymores that the organization ever created, to the point that she immediately shot up to Number 2 after becoming a full Claymore. She crossed swords with the series’ most powerful, Teresa, in a deathmatch where Priscilla eventually awakened. Her power was so immense that once she awakened, she becomes the most powerful awakened being, even exceeding that of the three former Number Ones that awakened. She is, however, the ultimate target of the series’ main character, Clare, whom she considers insignificant. Imposing, overpowered, and, just like Mukuro, strangely beautiful, Priscilla is this list’s Number 2.

1. Enma Ai from Jigoku Shoujo (Hell Girl)

[imageCharacterWithAnime character='jigoku Shoujo enma AI' anime='Jigoku Shojo dvd']
[Information episodes=" 26 " aired=" October 2005 - April 2006 "]

At the top of our list is a girl that works under the Master of Hell himself, Enma Ai. After a painful experience of betrayal in her past and after exacting revenge upon those who betrayed and gave her pain, Ai attracts the attention of the Master of Hell, who persuades her to work for him as the Hell Girl, a messenger of vengeance for people with a strong hatred in their hearts. Through the centuries, she has worked for Hell’s master, exacting revenge and sending souls to the Underworld. Personality-wise, Ai is very reserved, and due to her painful past, she rarely shows any emotion. However, she does show traces of her humanity from time to time, especially when she gets bound to send an innocent person’s soul to Hell. An otherworldly spectre that ferries people’s souls to Hell itself, while retaining the appearance of the eponymous anime girl, Enma Ai is our list’s Number 1.

Of course, I’m pretty sure I just scratched the surface of anime demon girls with this list. Thus, if there are any notable characters that you would like to add to our list of female demonic fatales, feel free to mention them in the comments below!

What would Anime be like without colorful haired characters? It simply wouldn’t be the same. Just take a minute to think on some of your favorite Anime characters. I bet at least half of them are not exactly brunettes. That’s why today we’ll continue with this series of color haired characters. On this occasion, we’ll focus on those who wear blue on their heads. Also, due to the large variety of relevant blue haired people, we’ll make this a “girls” edition. Now, blue is essentially the color of coolness, calm and peace, but it also has dozens of shades with much deeper meanings. We will dive into the ocean of blue haired Anime girls to explore the different features of this color that these ladies display. I give you my top 10 Blue Haired Girls in Anime!

[ad_top2 class="mt40"]

10. Ami Kawashima from Toradora!

[imageCharacterWithAnime character='Ami Kawashima' anime='Toradora']
[Information episodes=" 25 " aired=" Oct 2008 – Mar 2009 "]

Ami Kawashima is a beautiful young girl with long, straight, navy blue hair. In fact, the color of her hair is just as strong as her personality. She pretends to be a sweet, gentle girl in order to be popular and get everything she wants. Actually, behind her good-girl façade, she is arrogant and abusive. She is smart however, and often does get her way. The blue on her hair represents pretty much everything she tries to make others think she is. Coming to think about it, this girl is so fake it wouldn’t be a surprise to know that’s not her real hair color.

9. Bulma from Dragon Ball

[imageCharacterWithAnime character='dragonballz bulma' anime='dvd Dragon Ball']
[Information episodes=" 153 " aired=" Feb 1986 – Apr 1989 "]

A legend among blue haired girls is the lovely yet fearsome Bulma from Dragon Ball (also DBZ, GT and Super). She is the heir to the Capsule Corporation empire and the daughter of a great scientist, Dr. Brief. However, she’s not exactly the kind of rich girl that goes shopping with daddy’s credit card. Bulma is actually a real genius and the maker of some cool inventions, like the dragon radar and the time machine. Bulma has a turquoise infused hair color, which reflects her free spirit and creative nature, as she is both an adventurer and a resourceful woman. She can be really caring and selfless towards the people she loves, especially Goku, Vegeta, Krillin and her family. Although her fiery temperament does not coincide much with the nature of the blue color, she might be hiding her soft side under a thick layer of confidence. Then again, she was able to tame a prince of the Saiyan, so she may not be so soft after all.

8. Shiro from No Game No Life

[imageCharacterWithAnime character='Shiro no game no life' anime='dvd No Game No Life']
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" Apr 2014 – Jun 2014 "]

One of the most beautiful and kawaii blue haired girls is definitely Sora’s little sister, Shiro. She is a prodigy child, capable of outwitting her also unbelievably smart older brother. She appears to be invincible at any game, even if she’s playing against a god. However, as the light sky blue on her hair indicates, Shiro is quite sensitive, weak and even emotionally unstable. She loves her big brother more than anything else in the world and she cannot be without him. Being apart from him (even if he’s in the room next door) makes her anxious and depressed. Other than that, Shiro is always calmed and focused, and her mere company is strengthening and soothing for Sora, which is only logical since sky blue is a universal healer.

7. Kaname Chidori from Full metal Panic!

[imageCharacterWithAnime character='Kaname Chidori Full metal Panic!' anime='fumoffu full metal panic dvd']
[Information episodes=" 24 " aired=" Jan 2002 – Jun 2002 "]

Kaname is probably one of the hottest blue haired girls out there, so she definitely deserves a place on this list. She’s quite the loud mouth, often saying more than she should or at least not in the most friendly or respectful ways. That’s not exactly a proper thing of blue haired characters. She does, however, have a soft side hidden deep inside her. Kaname has really strong feelings for Sousuke. Feelings she is unable to reveal, but she is evidently very protective of him. And guess what, characters with strong blue hair often have their emotions running deep.

6. Touka Kirishima from Tokyo Ghoul

[imageCharacterWithAnime character='kirishima touka profile' anime='Tokyo Ghoul dvd']
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" Jul 2014 – Sep 2014 "]

The beautiful ghoul waitress and co-protagonist of Tokyo Ghoul is yet another of our blue haired beauties. Touka-chan is portrayed at first as a cold she-ghoul, almost incapable of establishing any sort of meaningful emotional relationship. Later however, we get to know she has a soft side and that she’s capable of enduring great pains for those whom she loves. This is of course no wonder, since the darkest shades of blue (like the midnight blue on her hair) represent both compassion and repressed feelings. We’ve seen her eating human food to preserve her friendship with Yoriko, despite the repercussions that kind of food has on her health.

5. Rei Ayanami from Neon Genesis Evangelion

[imageCharacterWithAnime character='Evangelion Rei Ayanami cosplay00' anime='evangelion DVD']
[Information episodes=" 26 " aired=" Oct 1995 – Mar 1996 "]

The First Child and pilot of the Evangelion Unit-00 is one cold and emotionally detached beauty that just had to be on our list. Rei can be ice cold to other people. She finds it very difficult to express her emotions, even to the point where it seems she doesn’t really have any to express at all. The color of her hair shows her conservative and responsible behavior, as well as her seemingly emotionless and gloomy nature. However, when the planets align, it is said that you can see her smiling, crying or at least showing a dash of emotion.

4. Shiina from Angel Beats!

[imageCharacterWithAnime character='Shiina Angel Beats!' anime='Angel Beats!']
[Information episodes=" 13 " aired=" Apr 2010 – Jun 2010 "]

Shiina is one of our favorite ninja girls ever and one of the members of the Afterlife Warfront. Despite being tough and quiet on the inside, she’s just a little girl on the inside and a lover of cute things, stuffed animals above all. Clearly, this relates to her dark blue hair, which represents her hidden or repressed feelings. Shiina is also quite perseverant and determined, as we can see in the way she consistently trains to be better. Another feature of the color blue and present on Shiina is her loner nature. She will do things her way most of the times and there’s little anyone can do about it. Whatever, we love her all the same for that.

wallpaper Angel Beats!

3. Juvia Loxar from Fairy Tail

[imageCharacterWithAnime character='Juvia Loxar' anime='dvd Fairy Tail']
[Information episodes=" 175 " aired=" Oct 2009 – Mar 2013 "]

The Rain Woman is a hot mage girl with cerulean blue hair. She displays many of the characteristics conveyed by the color blue. Juvia appears at first as a very lonely girl and extremely unconfident. She develops a happier and warmer personality after joining Fairy Tail, but she’s still shy enough to not shower with other girls. Juvia is still capable of maintaining friendly relationships with the rest of the members of Fairy Tail despite her dark past. In fact, she actually cares a lot for them, to the point of being willing to sacrifice herself if she has to.

2. Konata Izumi from Lucky Star

[imageCharacterWithAnime character='lucky star izumi konata' anime='lucky star dvd']
[Information episodes=" 24 " aired=" Apr 2007 – Sep 2007 "]

Now this is one cute blue haired girl. Konata’s long and smooth hair is the color of a shade known as arctic blue. However, this young pretty girl is far from being ice cold. Konata is really playful and the funniest girl on the show. Another thing that does not coincide much with the blue on her head is how lazy she is. Usually, blue haired characters are responsible and focused on what they do, but Konata just isn’t the case. She only studies the night before the exam. However, she always gets decent grades, which tells us she is very intelligent indeed. She’s also very fond of her friends even though she has weird ways of showing it.

konata izumi lucky star wallpaper

1. Hinata Hyuuga from Naruto

[imageCharacterWithAnime character='naruto hyuuga hinata' anime='Naruto Shippuden']
[Information episodes=" 220 " aired=" Oct 2002 – Feb 2007 "]

The heiress of the Hyuuga Clan and wife of Naruto Uzumaki, Hinata, is our #1 blue haired girl. Hinata is the sweetest ninja girl. Her dark blue hair represents many of her most salient personality traits. Her purity, calmness and serenity are only some of them. Hinata looks weak at first, but her strength comes from her determination to become a suitable heir to her clan and to win Naruto’s heart. Hinata’s character developed consistently throughout the series and we’ve seen her grow in different ways, mostly thanks to Naruto’s positive influence on her. She has gained a great deal of self-confidence and she’s not as shy as she used to be. Her sweet, gentle and empathetic nature will always be there though.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica Sayaka Miki wallpaper

Sayaka Miki (Puella Magi Madoka Magica)

This concludes our selection of blue haired girls. I hope to have shed some light on the “hidden” meaning of blue hair on Anime characters. Blue is indeed my favorite color and many of my favorite Anime characters wear it on their hair and eyes. You can go ahead and tell me, which are YOUR favorite blue haired characters? I know I left some big ones out. Let me know if I should have chosen any other ;)

ryuuguu rena higurashi no naku koro ni when they cry wallpaper

It’s that spooky time of year again when the temperature drops and pumpkin spice is literally floating in the air. Hot apple cider welcomes those returning from a long hayride or a difficult corn maze, but once the sun sets a different mood is struck and the bonfire gives off an eerie glow as tales of shock and horror are told. Those who love good scare actively seek out the adrenaline rush that accompanies the thrill of being spooked. While Hollywood keeps pumping out crappy Saw and Paranormal Activity sequels, I’ll introduce you to some of the scariest moments in anime around. Gather round, children, and listen to the tales I have to tell!

10. Pokemon: The First Movie

Pokemon The First Movie dvd
[Information episodes=" ? " aired=" July 18, 1998 "]

Ash Ketchum is a kid from Pallet Town whose sole mission is to become a Pokemon Master. To fulfill his dreams, he sets off to challenge the world’s Pokemon Gym Leaders in order to obtain badges and eventually be recognized. Together with his best friend (and pokemon) Pikachu, Ash is able to overcome almost any obstacle that has been laid in his path. That is until Mewtwo showed up. Everything was just fine until Mewtwo crapped in everyone’s ice cream with his gloom and doom attitude. Ash, being the naïve child that he is, basically gave up battling by the rules and instead decided to join the fight himself despite KNOWING that his opponent is one of the most powerful psychic pokemon in the world. So Ash just runs straight towards Mewtwo and…is turned to stone. Pikachu runs to his aide and cries in a very Pikachu like way and everyone watching is holding their collective breath. The entire scene is heartbreaking, sad, and also scary because as a child watching this movie it is hard not to think that Ash is dead and that the entire series is over. The fear is short lived though as everyone’s collective tears bring Ash back to life. If only that were true in real life.

9. Amnesia

amnesia-DVD
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" January 8, 2013 "]

A college student suddenly loses all of her memories and is thrust into multiple worlds where she dates a different man each time. She is accompanied by a strange spirit who wishes to help her regain her lost identity after causing all of her turmoil. At the end of her journey she must choose only one of the worlds to stay in with the guy that she likes the most. This anime is based on an otome game of the same name and while a good portion both of the anime and the game are filled with romantic and light-hearted fun to make girls’ hearts soar, one of the potential suitors has a really twisted idea of love. Toma may look like a harmless kid, but his intentions and possessiveness lead to some extremely alarming behavior. At the beginning, Toma finds the main character passed out in the street and takes her to the hospital for an examination. Once she is given the all clear, Toma takes her home where she notices that she is being bullied though she does not know why (because no memories). Toma continues to check up on her giving the main character the impression that they are dating. At one point she even asks Toma if they are dating and he confirms this. Once the bullying begins to escalate, Toma suggests that she stay at his place until everything dies down. She agrees and stays for a few days before becoming restless. She leaves Toma’s house to investigate her apartment. Toma discovers she has left and brings her home. From here on out begins the really frightening part. Toma begins to DRUG her food in order to keep her “safe” at his home. When she finally realizes what is happening, he LOCKS HER IN A DOG CAGE. At one point he even threatens to RAPE her so that she would “truly become his” because he would never leave her mind after such an act. The worst part is that after all this happens, she still dates him. Truly a nightmare.

8. Cowboy Bebop

Cowboy Bebop DVD
[Information episodes=" 26 " aired=" April 3, 1998 – April 23, 1999 "]

A spaceship name the Bebop carries around a group of misfit bounty hunters who have a knack for getting themselves into horrible situations with no payoff. The crew’s most prominent member, Spike Spiegel, is an eccentric guy who loves meat and can beat anyone in hand to hand combat. He’s a risk taker whose past eventually catches up to him. Toys in the Attack is one of the most memorable episodes the series has to offer. A mysterious illness plagues the crew after a long forgotten fridge is opened. A mysterious creature is unleashed upon the ship and begins to infect each crew member one by one. The ship’s navigator Jet is struck first, followed by Faye, Ed, and Ein. Spike is left to fend for himself while also managing the rest of the crew’s sickness. Eventually he remembers what he left in that lone fridge many moons ago and begins his mission to destroy whatever has become of it. This episode takes a lot from old-school Hollywood horror films. Faye’s shower scene in particular is reminiscent of Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho. In fact, the entire episode is quite similar to the plot of The Thing. For horror buffs, it really is a pleasure to see an anime nod to the horror genre so much as well as give some fun scares.

Naoki Urasawa’s manga Monster is a masterpiece and so is its anime adaptation. Urasawa insisted on taking as long as possible for the anime so that the story could be told as well as the manga. The entire plot focuses on a promising young surgeon who chooses to save the life of a young boy over a rich hospital donor due to the fact that the child arrived first. After such a decision, his career begins to slip and he is passed for an important promotion. To make things worse, the boy he saved is a psychopathic murderer. In order to fix his mistakes, he sets out to right his wrongs by killing the boy who is even worshipped as a demon. The young boy, Johan, is the perfect representation of evil. He is good looking, charismatic, and cold blooded. He was raised at an orphanage aimed at reviving the Third Reich by finding a boy Hitler. Johan actually incited a riot which caused the deaths of all of his fellow orphans as well as the caregivers. Johan was the only one who made it out alive. Johan is the scariest thing about this anime because everyone knows someone like Johan. He can be anyone. A neighbor. A classmate. A coworker. He’s personable and well-liked. He’s basically the antichrist and no one would ever suspect him.

6. Hellsing Ultimate

[Information episodes=" 10 " aired=" February 2, 2006 "]

The protestant organization named Hellsing was established by the Queen of England in an attempt to fight off paranormal threats (mainly vampires) that roamed the streets of England. After a long rest, someone has begun to create an army of vampires for no other reason than to start a war of chaos. The leader of Hellsing, Integra, summons their ultimate weapon, the vampire Alucard, to eliminate the problem. The main antagonist of the series are Nazis. Or to be more precise, Nazi vampires. And their leader is none other than a crazy Hitler wannabe who only wishes for war because apparently that is his thing. When a man like this is adored by bloodsucking demons of the night, nothing is too gruesome. The only thing scarier than a horde of vampire zombies is Alucard, an evil count in his past life who put spikes through the heads of his enemies and displayed them in front of his castle. When he releases all of his abilities he takes the shape of the famous Cerberus, the dog who guards the gates of hell. In fact, one of the most memorable and scariest scenes in the series appears when a “worthy” opponent finally confronts Alucard in the basement of Hellsing’s headquarters. After fighting in his regular form and having his attacks be blocked and even countered, he finally acknowledges his opponent by released his true power. His body is then slowly transformed into the stuff of nightmares. He is no longer a solid being and his shape and presence fills the room with an overbearing sense of horror. Even the man that had challenged Alucard backs down and declares the vampire a monster deeply disappointing him. Just the vision of Alucard’s amorphous body can give anyone nightmares. The art style of Hellsing Ultimate really enhances the gritty mood of the plot. The thick outlines juxtaposed with such muted colors really gives a feel of darkness and loss of hope. The character designs are amazingly detailed as well as the blood and gore of combat.

In present day, the students of class 3-3 begin to die one by one and Mei’s quiet nature makes her a prime suspect for the murders, but Koichi and Mei attempt to clear her name by solving the mystery and proving otherwise. Every episode involves strange deaths made to look natural and that prey on real fears such as drowning in an undertow. A curse cannot be seen which makes it all the more deadly. The only way to fight curse is to confront the source itself, forcing the two main characters to face their enemy head to head. Several of the deaths in Another are quite bizarre and unbelievable, but many do stick out for being grounded in reality. In fact one of the worst and scariest deaths occurs within the school and in a situation that most people have faced. One of the young girls begins rushing down the stairs with her umbrella when she begins to lose her footing and falls down the stairs. Falling down the stairs can be lethal enough in certain situations, but the umbrella adds an entire new level because as she falls down the final stair her umbrella is waiting for her with its tip facing up and towards her throat. When she is found, she is on her knees twitching and propped up by the umbrella with a pool of blood surrounding her, Every episode is unpredictable, making Another a thrill ride for those watching and waiting for another death. Likable characters will be killed off. No one is safe.

Paranoia Agent
[Information episodes=" 13 " aired=" February 2, 2014 – May, 17, 2004 "]

A young illustrator under extreme pressure to create a new mascot character as successful as her last one, falls victim to an assault by a mysterious suspect only known as “Shounen Bat”. Soon the entire city reports attacks by the golden roller blading boy who knocks out his victims with a baseball bat. The only thing connecting each of the victims are that each is suffering from depression and anxiety, which “Shounen Bat” seems to take away. He becomes the perfect scapegoat and soon everyone wants a piece of him. The entire series Paranoia Agent is a psychological thriller where the attacker is created in one young woman’s mind and spreads into something bigger and more tangible. The series is more of a critique on modern day society and people’s inability to accept responsibility for their own mistakes and shortcomings. Instead, they look for an easy excuse and “Shounen Bat” provides the perfect answer to all of their problems. Perhaps the real scare happens once realization hits and viewers can’t deny that this is a real problem in everyday life. While “Shounen Bat” won’t come to kill everyone in the city with a problem, the lack of honesty and trustworthiness in the world currently certainly makes others wary of human interaction, something necessary to survive SPOILERS AHEAD!!!!! The most terrifying part of the series happens when the entire town begins to pin their problems on “Shounen Bat” and he begins to manifest as a real living and breathing being instead of an urban legend only much like the game telephone, he is now much larger and stronger as a result of each person exaggerating the original story. As people become more and more aware of him he begins to terrorize the city more until he becomes similar to Godzilla and devours the city. This is the end of the series and it is really poignant. Was “Shounen Bat” real or was it all a result of people’s carelessness?

Shinji is summoned by his father, Gendou, who is the leader of a private weapons company called NERV, to operate a giant robot which may or may not be harboring the soul of his dead mother. He is forced to fight against aliens from another planet nicknamed “angels” that wish to cause “Third Impact” and force the planet to be reborn according to the wishes of one person. He sets out with two other pilots, Asuka and Rei, to protect the Earth, but ultimately fail. While the “angels” in Evangelion are quite terrifying, the actual horror comes in the form of one man: Gendou. Gendou is soulless and uncaring with the exception of his long, lost wife. The audience only knows this because Rei is discovered to be an exact clone Shinji’s mother from her younger days. In fact, Gendou has a basement full of Rei’s growing at his disposal. Shinji even develops feelings for Rei, who is a CLONE OF HIS MOTHER. Gendou is even so cold as to sleep with Ritsuko’s mother in order to use her intelligence to create the super computer Magi. Once she has found that she was betrayed (she found out about Rei) she is STILL loyal to Gendou and even infuses a part of her soul into the Magi program which later turns on her only daughter Ritsuko. The scariest moment involving Gendou is when he forces his son to kill his best friend. Shinji is alerted to fight a new angel and just as he is about to finish his mission with the final blow, he realizes that the “angel” is actually another Eva unit that has gone berserk. It dawns on him that his friend is the pilot inside and so he hesitates to crush the head housing the cockpit and his friend. Gendou ends up taking control of the unit and does the job for him. Talk about cold and uncaring. Gendou shows no emotion to his son and doesn’t seem to care what happens to him, which is probably why after Third Impact, Shinji decides to wipe everyone out. With Gendou for a father, I suppose no one can quite blame him.

In a final act of severance, Griffith has Casca brought forth so that he may rape her in front of Guts. Guts, who now has his arm trapped in the mouth of a monster, rips off his appendage and loses an eye trying to save Casca. Miraculously, both of them survive. Nothing is as horrifying as seeing the one you love be violated in front of you. Nothing can compare. The entire scene is gut wrenching and vomit worthy making it the number one scariest thing in anime so far.

Some honorable Mentions: Full Metal Alchemist - Edward and Alphonse bring their dead mother back from the dead. Also, Nina. Elfen Lied - An alien woman goes berserk on a laboratory, leaving it a bloody mess. While most of these anime are unconventional, each are spooky in their own way and cater to different types of scares. While the fear of the unknown can be quite terrifying, the fear of the familiar provides a bigger impact on those watching. The familiar is all around. It can be a loved one, a dear pet, or perhaps a place once thought to be safe. Have the safe feeling given off from these ordinary and every day routines be betrayed, perhaps, is the scariest feeling of them all. So don’t get too comfortable or you may be next!

What is an OVA? [Definition, Meaning]

There are several terms thrown around in the anime community that you may have heard but not known what they meant. Today, I’m going to break down a few of those. What I want to cover are OVA, OAD, and ONA. I’m almost 100% sure that you’ve heard of an OVA. But, more than likely you’ve never seen or heard of the other two. There are very similar. In fact, the latter two terms are subcategories of an OVA. So, the definition and its uses also extends to the other two. But, ODA and ODE each carry a few extra stipulations. So, let me break down each one separately. That way you get a solid understanding of each and don’t get them confused with one another. Let’s start with the most common term.

[ad_top2 class="mt40"]

What is an OVA?

An OVA is an Original Video Animation. The most notable difference between OVA and a standard anime series is that the OVA never aired on television. It was created and then directly made available for consumers to purchase. Originally they were available on VHS. Of course, today the primary way people buy OVA are in the form of DVD’s or Blu-rays. Usually they are related to an existing anime series. It can be a prequel, sequel, alternate universe storyline, or any other kind of narrative that connects to a series. But, it doesn’t have to tie in to a pre-existing anime or manga. It can be completely original. The allocated resources are usually higher than that of standard anime episodes. So, studios can use the extra freedom to push for higher standards of quality. This usually manifests in beautifully animated, well-told stories that can make some regular anime pale in comparison. Also, the acronym used to look slightly different. It used to be OAV. However, AV (animation video) was a little too confusing because it was very similar to a couple of other terms. Audio/Video and Adult Video were commonly mixed up whenever OAV was brought up. So, the anime industry quickly changed the acronym and the community backed the new version.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes (Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu)

Legend of the Galactic Heroes wallpaper
[Information episodes=" 101 " aired=" Jan 1988 - Mar 1997 "]

In a nutshell, Legend of the Galactic Heroes (Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu) is an interstellar, military space opera. Two men, Reinhard von Lohengramm and Yang Wen-Li, join the military for personal and political reasons. They both prove to be talented and highly intelligent individuals who attract like-minded soldiers to their cause. The two build up a rivalry that eventually breaks the stalemate that existed between the Galactic Empire and the Free Planets Alliance. Their story brings about the end of the greatest war mankind has ever undergone. LGH is highly regarded as one of the best OVA series ever released. The character development and epicness are something no other anime has quite matched. Some other anime up there along with LGH would be FLCL, Hellsing Ultimate, and Rurouni Kenshin: Trust and Betrayal.

Click here for our article on Top 10 OVA

However, LGH trumps all of those in sheer size. In its entirety, it spans 110 episodes. It even boasts the largest voice acting cast of any series ever. It contained over 300 voice actors. What’s more impressive is that at the beginning, of its nearly ten year span, it was a subscription based product. Meaning, episodes were mailed to fans of the original Legend of the Galactic Heroes novels.

Stay Away from This OVA

Mars of Destruction

Mars of Destruction wallpaper
[Information episodes=" 1 " aired=" Jul 2015 "]

Hopefully, from my description of what an OVA is and the example up above you can determine what a good one should consist of. It should definitely have great visuals, strong attention to detail, an engaging story (original or not), character development, and, at the very least, induce some laughs or emotions out of you. Mars of Destruction has none of those elements and even fails to tell a somewhat basic plot. The story aside, the execution of scene transitions and animation are appalling. I won’t bore you with all the gruesome details. But, I will warn you to stay away from Skelter + Heaven. It’s another anime from the same studio (Idea Factory). Mars of Destruction has one of the lowest rankings on the MyAnimeList site. It is a cautionary tale, for anime studios, on how NOT to create an OVA.

What is an OAD?

This next term is much less familiar because there are far fewer anime that fall under this category. That would be the category labeled as OAD or Original Animation DVD. Starting in 2008, certain volumes of manga would come bundled with a promotional DVD. Those discs contained single anime episodes of the same franchise. They are usually “what-if” episodes that place the characters in wacky or entertaining situations. Basically, they are created as incentives to purchase a manga.

Bonus Trivia

Strong World

Strong World onepiece wallpaper
[Information episodes=" 1 " aired=" Dec 2009 "]

In Strong World, Luffy and his Straw Hat Pirates find themselves on a mysteriously island where all of the animals and wildlife are immensely powerful. It seems that something has altered nature and forcibly evolved these beasts into dangerous predators. Shiki “The Golden Lion” is the legendary pirate responsible for those changes. He has escaped from imprisonment at Impel an has set in motion his plan to destroy the World Government and bring the whole world under his rule. One Piece Film: Strong World is an example of an OVA that essentially acts as a reverse OAD. What I mean is that this anime was released in Japanese theaters and a complementary (and complimentary) manga was given to customers who purchased tickets. Moviegoers were given a copy of One Piece Volume #0. It was a one time release. The volume contained Chapter #0 of One Piece and included some screenshots of Strong World. This is not the only film to have operated in this manner, but it is definitely not a very common practice.

What is an ONA?

ONA or Original Net Animation is the newest term and has only been around for the last few years. These are anime series that have only been broadcasted online only. Some of the most popular ONA include: Eve no Jikan, Hetalia Axis Powers, Inferno Cop, There She Is!, and (more recently) Ninja Slayer. Though, Ninja Slayer will soon break out of this category since it is scheduled to be broadcasted on television sometime in 2016.

ONA Recommendation

Ninja Slayer

ninja slayer wallpaper 01
[Information episodes=" 26 " aired=" Apr 2015 - Oct 2015 "]

Ninja Slayer would be a good place to start if you want to check out an ONA. As I mentioned above, this anime is very recent. It just finished its 26 episode run on October 8th. Essentially, the story is about a man, Kenji Fujikido, whose family is murdered by members of the Soukai Syndicate. On the verge of death, Kenji agrees to harbor the soul of an ancient ninja known as Naraku Ninja. He uses Naraku’s power to exterminate all ninja and take down the syndicate. He does all of this under his new persona, Ninja Slayer.

You can read a full review here

Conclusion

Hopefully, I was able to clear up those three different terms for you. Remember that OAD and ONA are types of Original Video Animations. They simply have minor caveats. To recap: OVA is an anime that never aired on television. OAD is an anime that comes bundled with a volume of manga. Lastly, an ONA is an anime that has only been broadcasted online. The majority of OVA’s that I’ve seen have been excellent. Each year they improve in quality, as well. So, go and check out some OVA’s. I’ve only seen a few OVA, myself, but I have a few personal favorites. They include: Ninja Slayer (of course!), Strong World, and Hellsing Ultimate. I’d like to hear some recommendations from you guys as well! Maybe we can share some suggestions and discover some OAD together, since those are a little harder to come by.

What is Bakunyu? [Definition, Meaning]

Queen’s Blade What is Bakunyu
[ad_top1]
Prison School wallpaper What is Bakunyu

Boing! Boing! Boing!* What could that refer to? A pet in an anime? A skirt playfully bouncing in the wind as a girl walks by? How about a pair of boobs that is so large, they look like they are going to burst? Welcome to Bakunyu! Bakunyu is a term that has existed for a while now, but hasn’t been thrown around a lot until recently. Bakunyuu is actually a Japanese word created by slamming two different Kanji together to get a new meaning. The first part, Baku, 爆, means literally an explosion of some sort; whether vocal or other. It is usually paired with works like explosion, or bomb, or voracious laughter, so you get the idea. Nyu, 乳, refers to milk as it is commonly found in words like milk, baby, or infant. So explosive milk… hmm… It can only mean one thing – giant, exploding breasts! (Yay!) Bakunyu is defined as women who are depicted having breasts so large they look as if they are about to explode. They can be defined as breasts that are between G75 and M70. (I did not even know that boobs could get that big…) Anime will always have one character or another that has an unrealistic set of breasts. Some, thankfully, are much more generous and give us multiple characters that are well equipped. Most of the time, these characters appear in Hentai and while that is all nice and fun, this article will focus on characters that exist in anime to sort of give us a tantalizing tease. They are big. We know they are big, but let’s enjoy the tease without this becoming adult too fast.

Queen’s Blade

01 What is Bakunyu Queen’s Blade
  • Episodes : 12
  • Genres : Action, Adventure, Ecchi, Supernatural
  • Airing Date : April 2009 – June 2009

Queen’s Blade follows Leina as she sets out on a Journey to Join the Queens Blade tournament. What is it? It’s a competition held every few years to determine who the next queen will be. The Queens Blade tournament is held and it not only concerns itself with strength, but with body as well… So Leina sets out along the way meeting Listy, Tomoe and a few other heroes while attracting the unwanted attention of the likes of the swamp witch with served by Melona, Airi, and Menace. This show has plenty of Bakunyu but the two best examples of it have to be with Melpha the High Priestess and Cattleya the weaponsmith. Cattelya is a bit more reserved but she has um… quite the endowment and it’s very easily to be seen. While she doesn’t show up a whole lot in the beginning, she makes plenty of appearances. That being said, the real winner here is Melpha. She’s practically bursting out of her holy garments at almost all times. Melpha is a high priestess who is obsessed with Nanael, because she thinks that Nanael is a messenger from God. While initially weak in most combat, some lewd poses combined with her breasts flailing everywhere, Melpha can actually become quite strong. This is a great show to watch all around with great recommendations. Chances are, if you’re into Bakunyu and oversized boobs, then this is the show for you as almost everyone has a large chest. It’s just that some are larger than others!

Prison School

prison school wallpaper
  • Episodes : 12
  • Genres : School life, Slice of life, Comedy, Ecchi
  • Airing Date : July 2015 – September 2015

Prison School is about five boys that enter into high school. I know you’re saying “so what” so I’ll keep it moving. There’s a twist. These are the first five boys to ever be accepted to this school in its history because it’s an all girls school. On the very first day, the five boys are caught trying to peep on the girls as the take a bath. They are arrested by the student council and confined to a prison cell located in the middle of the school grounds where all of the girls can see them. Welcome to prison school. Prison school may be a lot of things, but it’s definitely got plenty of ecchi as well. The most notable being the student council vice president, Shiraki Meiko. From day one, Meiko’s uniform is barely holding back her bakunyu. In fact, there are many times that the uniform looks as if it is about to burst or explode and show us what Meiko is barely hiding underneath. Meiko does exercises in her underwear once or twice leaving nothing to the imagination as well as the time where she wears the blck body suit! The best part about Prison School is that Meiko is actually a prominent character so she does show up a lot!

Valkyrie Drive ~Mermaid~

What is Bakunyu Valkyrie Drive
  • Episodes : 12
  • Genres : Action, Magical girl, Yuri
  • Airing Date : October 2015 – December 2015 (planned)

Valkyrie Drive ~Mermaid~ is actually a brand new show for the Fall 2015 lineup, but it works perfect for this introduction to bakunyu. Valkyrie Drive follows Mamori Tokonome who was abducted and sent to Mermaid island. Once there, she is attacked almost instantly but then saved by Mirei Shikishima who does… some things… to Mamori letting her transform into a weapon for them to fight back! Then they are brought in and it is explained that both are on this island because they are affected by the A Virus which allows them to transform as a pair and fight. The Exters (Mamori) can turn into weapons when they are turned on by Liberators (Mirei) through a process called driving. They are then able to fight! Hence the fight to survive against the cruel alienation by society begins. First things first, this is a yuri anime. It’s very obvious from the first few minutes. That being said, the Bakunyu here belong to Mirei! She has a huge chest and she has no problem exposing it even in the first episode to drive Mamori to turn into a weapon! Kind and soft spoken, Mirei fights to keep Mamori safe while at the same time forming a bond with her. This often involves her rubbing her boobs against Mamori’s (Yes!) ((shot)). Not to mention too, many of the women in this society seem to be well equipped. As more episodes air, I’m sure we will get more good characters too with bakunyu! Check it out for some good laughs and great examples of Bakunyu!

Closing

Here we are at the end again. Just for a quick recap, bakunyu means “explosive breasts” and this refers to anything that is an overtly large bust. The character has to look as if they are about to burst out of their clothes. Or in the case of Mirei in Valkyrie Drive, the character could just constantly wear a shirt unbuttoned! We hope you enjoyed this intro into what bakunyu is! If you have questions, comments, or concerns, fire away in the comments and we can talk it up. Till next time!

Animate in Akihabara 01

When most anime fans think of Japan, they think of stores packed to the brim with anime and floors upon floors of figurines. People dream of billboards plastered with the newest anime to date, video games never translated, and manga that you’ve never heard of as far as the eye can see. This is what the anime capital of the world Akihabara has to offer. Specifically, this is what Animate in Akihabara has to offer. If there is one store that is a must visit, it’s Animate. It is every anime fan’s dream and, even if you can’t speak or read Japanese, you’ll probably be extremely tempted to squeeze every last drop out of your wallet. Each floor is dedicated to mostly one thing such as manga, anime DVDs, figurines, etc and you can and will spend hours in every section.

Note:

There’s an Animate nestled away in a corner that is a little more noticeable but isn’t as big and has elevators over stairs. The Animate talked about in this article is the one on a main street.

The Experience

At first glance, the outside of Animate and its logo does it justice. It’s primarily white and blue, solid, firm, and has its solid ground in, well, anime. It’s a thin, tall building nestled to other thin tall buildings but it captures your attention well and the gashapon machines outside help too. Once you venture in, you’ll find yourself on the first floor that completely entrances and intrigues you on the first go. If you look to your left, there’s a plethora of anime food merchandise ranging from anime girl Umeshu (Very sweet Japanese plum wine) to tsundere biscuits. To your right is walls of anime magazines and in the middle of the room is manga. Every floor has a back area too and the back of floor one is all different kinds of trading cards from different series. Downstairs in the basement they feature a new anime every so often that the whole room is dedicated to and includes promotional videos, different kinds of merchandise and more. Now the next three floors you could easily say are just manga, manga, and more manga but upon closer inspection are obviously divided up into different genres with some extra things thrown in. For starters, floor two is every aspiring manga artists dream. On the left hand side is an entire section of manga material central, both traditional and nontraditional supplies alike. Copic, of course, is the predominate brand because it is most widely used by professional mangaka and inkers in the industry but there’s plenty of different brands of inks, sketchpads, etc. On the top shelf of all the traditional supplies lies the digital side of the manga industry. Drawing tablets, manga drawing programs, and also lit up tracing boards. The manga side of the floor is different manga suited for a wide audience and, even if you can’t read Japanese, you much just study every aisle meticulously. The back of floor two is the ever so popular BL (Boy’s Love) and shoujo, so a section many ladies (and some gents) might find themselves in for awhile.

The Third Floor

Floor three is more manga but with more action and horror thrown into the mix. Manga genres are hard to solidify into one basic genre to begin with so it’s not easily visibly separated but you can see some types nestled into certain corners. The back of floor three is where most people’s goal location is because it contains doujinshi as well as some of the most popular manga including Naruto, Haikyuu, One Piece, and newer but popular series like Nanatsu no Taizai.

Floor four is where heaven officially starts, with oodles and oodles of merchandise of newer series that probably would not be available so readily in your own country. This first section of merchandise, however, is actually mostly men! Bishounen to be specific and the merchandise itself is often really fun; scrunchies of your favorite characters, cels, and various functionable and cute merchandise. In the back is more merchandise and plenty of gashapon machines if you’re on a lower budget!

Animate in Akihabara 04

The Fifth Floor

Floor five is now the opposite, with beautiful girls lining the walls. There’s similar types of merchandise but with less strictly feminine things such as scrunchies because the primary aim is males. But of course, both girls and boys alike lined up every aisle, trying to decide what to spend their money on because we live in a world that doesn’t let the vast majority buy everything out at once! The back is the same as floor four, more merchandise and gashapon.

Animate in Akihabara 05

The Sixth Floor

Floor six is large array of soundtracks from different anime, movies, and the artists that sung them. The back is more soundtracks but also has some console games related to anime and the like.

Animate in Akihabara 06

The Seventh Floor

Floor seven is what one would expect, the long awaited anime DVD collections! All the latest anime on DVD but also many, many live actions, musicals, and more! Live actions such as Death Note, Prince of Tennis and Prince of Tennis musical, if that’s up your alley! The back of floor seven is similarly set up as the basement but with less lighting and more focus on the selected anime playing. It focuses on one anime and plays that so it looks like a theater but without chairs, also with small amounts of merchandise.

Additional info

Animate in Akihabara 08

Animate is in a very tall and thing building with much gloriousness to be had inside but, yes, it gets a bit crowded at times. Every aisle is thin and there’s always enough people inside to get in someone’s way so just be sure to not bring large backpacks or bags. Akihabara itself is very crunched, the actual anime related stores only spans so many blocks every which way so you’ll never be far from a cafe (regular or maid) and delicious food is always nearby. In general, Akihabara is most packed after school and on the weekends (Sunday is when most people dress up!) so if you go during the weekday daytime it’ll be easier to maneuver. If you’re shopped out but still want to enjoy some more anime, there’s a Gundam cafe near the station and right it is also an AKB48 cafe, the idols who have their own anime, done many anime openings and, quite frankly, are top of the Japanese idol world.

Overall conclusion

If you are even 0.1% otaku, you should visit Animate. It has the latest and greatest anime, merchandise, wonderful food souvenirs, and supplies to create your own manga! It’s basically a mashup of all the little specialty stores conveniently put into one building. The only thing it is not in abundance of is figurines but they do have plenty of gashapon and smaller figures to make up for it! Animate is a place you go to if you want to know what’s popular, what’s new, and what’s hip! It all starts with floor one’s magazines, who tell you what’s out and popular so you can venture forth with the knowledge you need to buy everything your heart desires.

I vote for Arietty
I liked Ponyo's protagonist's mother.
Nausicaa is the best, I vote for her too.
I think the girl from The Cat Returns was really cute. But generally, Ghibli characters aren't very smart...
I couldn't stand that Sophie's voice remained the same even after turning young.

hibike euphonium season 2

What You Need to Know:

  • The official website for Hibike! Euphonium announced that the series will be getting a second season and a movie.
  • The movie will be titled Hibike! Euphonium the Movie: Welcome to the Kitauji High School Concert Band, and will be a recap of the first season. The second season will then be a continuation of the story following from where the first season ended.

Synopsis

After swearing off music due to an incident at the middle school regional brass band competition, euphonist Kumiko Oumae enters high school hoping for a fresh start. As fate would have it, she ends up being surrounded by people with an interest in the high school brass band. Kumiko finds the motivation she needs to make music once more with the help of her bandmates, some of whom are new like novice tubist Hazuki Katou; veteran contrabassist Sapphire Kawashima; and band vice president and fellow euphonist Asuka Tanaka. Others are old friends, like Kumiko's childhood friend and hornist-turned-trombonist Shuuichi Tsukamoto, and trumpeter and bandmate from middle school, Reina Kousaka. However, in the band itself, chaos reigns supreme. Despite their intention to qualify for the national band competition, as they currently are, just competing in the local festival will be a challenge—unless the new band advisor Noboru Taki does something about it. From the studio that animated Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu, Kyoto Animation's Hibike! Euphonium is a fresh and musical take on the slice-of-life staple that is the high school student's struggle to deal with their past, find romance, and realize their dreams and aspirations. What You Need to Know:

  • If you grew up somewhere in North America, you probably think of Halloween as a day people either spend playfully trick-or-treating, or welcoming those who are trick-or-treating. Or maybe you're in college, and you have a party to go to that night. Whatever your plans were this Halloween, they were almost certainly different from what went down in Tokyo!
  • The Halloween 'holiday' has been steadily gaining popularity in Japan, centred around Tokyo, over the past several years. But instead of the traditional way of celebrating, Tokyoites has taken to partying it up in the busy city-centres of Tokyo – mainly Shibuya and Ikebukuro.
  • While there was a Cosplay Festival at Ikebukuro, and things were more or less in order, there was a rowdy crowd that developed in Shibuya, eventually resulting in riot police being deployed, and leaving a mound of trash where they gathered. See some of the pics from the night below.

Beauty and balance all in a box, an anime bento is one of those wonders of Japan that many people covet around the world. While anime food is undeniably mouth watering and hunger inducing, an anime bento lunch appears to be so amazing that you will cry about those days when you brought a plastic wrapped sandwich in a brown paper bag or lunchables to school. Bento lunches can be traced back to the Kamakura period where dried rice was placed in a bag to be re-cooked later for lunch, but the lacquered bento box comes from Azuchi-Momoyama period. It wasn't until the Edo period that the bento lunch became more popular and widespread. The bento lunch originally got its name from a slang term used for the word "convenience" from the Song Dynasty, but it has since evolved since then. It usually refers to a single portioned meal stored in a bento box. Bento boxes range from disposable types to beautifully handcrafted lacquered boxes. There are many different types of bento lunches available from plain bentos like hinomaru bento (just rice and umeboshi) to kyaraben (character bento) to chukaben (Chinese food bento). Regardless of the type, ost bento boxes are balanced between rice (or another carb), protein, vegetables, and fruit. The Japanese take the time to make sure that their bento boxes are visually appealing and nutritionally balanced. Bento making can be quite the art form. If you're not hungry after all that, you will be because we are going to show you our choice for the top anime bento lunches!

10. Hamburger Bento (Himouto Umaru-chan)

Himouto! Umaru-chan dvd
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" July 2015 - September 2015 "]

The first bento on our list is made by Douma Taihei from Himouto! Umaru-chan. It's a delicious looking hamburger bento! A Japanese hamburger steak is different from the hamburger patties found sandwiched between a sesame seed bun; it is made with a combination of ground beef and ground pork coupled with other ingredients and topped with a sauce. For a bento lunch, hamburger steak is made into little patties to fit inside the bento box! What makes Taihei's hamburger bento so special is how much time and consideration he put into it to dice up bell peppers to mix with the hamburger so that Umaru would be able to eat her vegetables without tasting them. You can see how much Taihei cares about Umaru's health, but he knows what she likes. Umaru is a junk food junkie and does not eat her veggies, so we do see tamagoyaki, pasta, and tako dogs included for her picky tastes with a small amount of lettuce and tomatoes on the side. Although it is such a simple bento, it reflects just how much Taihei thought about Umaru.

9. Usagi Bento (Gochuumon wa Usagi Desu ka?)

Gochuumon wa Usagi Desu ka dvd
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" April 2014 - June 2014 "]

Nothing fails to put a smile on your face like a cute kyaraben (character bento)! The usagi bento lunch from the anime Gochuumon wa Usagi Desu ka? is an adorable example of a kyaraben. While it is not necessary to shape your foods into characters or put faces on them, they can really brighten up someone's day. Shaping the rice can be done using saran wrap or with your hands and the face is made with seaweed using a face cutter, or if you're really confident, a knife! The bunny even has a little carrot bow tie! The hard boiled eggs also have little faces to make them look like chicks. The tako dogs can be made with arabiki sausage or regular hot dogs and cut using a knife then fried in a pan or even microwaved to create the curled legs of an octopus. To balance the meal, veggies were added on the side with the tamagoyaki being a sweet side dish to go with the meal. Tamagoyaki is a sweet rolled egg omelet found in many anime bento! Although it looks like a difficult feat to make a kyaraben, it can actually be easy to make a cute yet balanced kyaraben to brighten up someone's day!

8. Sweetheart Bento (Karin)

dvd Karin
[Information episodes=" 24 " aired=" November 2005 - May 2006 "]

In Japan, making a bento for your lover is a sweet gesture to show them how much you care. In many anime, you have probably seen girls excitedly making delicious bento lunches because it makes them happy to have someone they love eat their food. There's a feeling of satisfaction, especially after all the effort is made into making a delicious bento lunch. It can be mutually benefiting on both ends. The bento lunch shown here is from the anime Karin in which Karin makes a special sweetheart bento for Kenta! This bento lunch has nimono vegetables which means the vegetables are simmered in a stock that may be seasoned with sake or soy sauce. To make the meal more satisfying and hearty, there is a good amount of protein in the tako dogs and chicken kaarage, which is Japanese fried chicken made using potato starch instead of flour to give it a lighter taste. Another protein is the tamagoyaki, which is on the sweeter side, but adds some sweetness to balance out the more salty foods. Lastly, there is Japanese potato salad made using Japanese mayo like kewpie. This anime bento not only blatantly says how Karin feels about Kenta, it also shows how much thought and time she put into the bento. This bento lunch is a hearty one for someone in need of energy! Karin took a lot of time considering what Kenta needed and made a bento perfect for him, which is not only satisfying, it's heart warming. You can tell that she really cares and worked hard on this anime bento for Kenta. Just look at the headbands on those tako dogs!

7. Curry Rice Bento (Charlotte)

dvd Charlotte
[Information episodes=" 13 " aired=" July 2015 - September 2015 "]

When they say that the Japanese eat a lot of curry, they aren't kidding. The average Japanese family will eat curry once a week, so how do you incorporate that into your bento since you might have leftover curry from the night before or it might just be a quicker meal to prep? In Charlotte, Joujirou prepares a delicious beef tongue curry rice bento for Yuu at the hospital. Yes, beef tongue curry! While it may sound unusual, especially for western foodies, don’t be so fast to dismiss it! If you aren't feeling quite so adventurous, though, you can switch it out for a different protein source if you'd like. Not only is this anime bento a testament to the friendship between Joujirou and Yuu, it is also a delicious meal to warm the body on any cold afternoon. While making curry is as easy as making a roux (or using curry blocks), the tricky part is keeping the rice for your curry bento lunch from getting soggy before lunch. Also, cold curry may not be tasty for everyone, which is why Joujirou prepared a special bento box for his curry bento lunch! You need a bento that is insulated to keep the warmth in, but it also has separate containers for the different foods so that nothing touches before it's time to eat. Zojirushi has an entire line of bento boxes for this type of meal in mind. With this design, you can have a warm meal on the coldest days!

Nothing says "I love you" like a shoujo manga bento. Unless it's an anime bento made by Nozaki. If it's for his manga, Nozaki can do anything so this shoujo manga bento by Nozaki shows just how devoted Nozaki is to his craft. The rice for his homemade maki is seasoned and rolled in a way to create a heart shaped center. The tamagoyaki has ham in the center and is ham in the center and is cut and placed to create a heart shape while in the bento box. The chicken kaarage and smiley face dango have cute little food picks to add to the charm of the bento. Not only do the tako dogs have faces and headbands, the rest of the side dishes are covered in vegetable flowers and there's a large sakura shaped carrot. 3. Three Kinds of Onigiri Bento (Shokugeki no Soma)

Food Wars! Shokugeki no Soma dvd 2
[Information episodes=" 24 " aired=" April 2015 - September 2015 "]

Onigiri are staples in bento lunches and make quite satisfying meals, but of course, Shokugeki no Soma shows us how much potential an onigiri can have in terms of taste. Megumi may not be the most confident girl out there, but she does have a lot of skill. Her three-kinds-of-onigiri bento, as the same suggests, features three different types of onigiri to satiate that roaring hunger. One onigiri is made with garlic pork made tender by cooking the pork with honey so that it melts in your mouth. The second onigiri has a negishiodare filling that is made with negi, chicken, and some other essential Japanese cooking ingredients like ginger and sake. Then the onigiri is topped with green onions. The last pair of onigiri have a shio kombu cheese filling. It may sound like an odd combination since the kombu is simmered in soy beforehand, but as stated in Shokugeki no Soma, they compliment each other beautifully! With these three different unusual yet delicious fillings, don't you dare label onigiri as boring! They make a great bento lunch!

2. Asian-Styled Bento (Bonjour Koiaji Patissiere)

bonjour koiaji patissiere
[Information episodes=" 24 " aired=" October 2014 - March 2015 "]

It's not unusual to find foreign foods in a bento lunch like Chinese food, but this delicious bento from Bonjour Koiaji Patisserie is definitely a game changer. This Asian-styled bento features several Asian influences. The egg topped fried rice is a Korean influenced dish. The spring rolls appear to be the Vietnamese goi cuon which are not fried and contain a good amount of vegetables and proteins like pork and shrimp, which will compliment the included peanut sauce nicely. There's also banh xeo in this anime bento, which is a Vietnamese crepe filled with bean sprouts and proteins like shrimp, wrapped in lettuce and consumed with fish sauce. With so many delicious main courses, it's amazing that there are still side dishes to go with it, but this anime bento is a very impressive bento especially when you just aren't feeling like Japanese food.

[Information episodes=" 25 " aired=" October 2008 - March 2009 "]

This luxury bento made by Yuusaku's mother is amazing enough to spark a feud! Or at least the fighting spirit in Ryuuji. This three-tiered bento is a wonderful bento that one can share with their friends, must like Yuusaku did with it. Yuusaku's anime bento contains some basic bento staples, but it also has some very luxurious ingredients added in to make any student jealous! The basic bento staple foods would be the nimono, fried rice, tako dogs, steamed vegetables, kaarage, hamburger steak, and tamagoyaki. There's even some katsu which isn't uncommon for bento lunches either. This bento lunch takes it over the top with sushi rolls, inarizushi, and addition proteins like steak and who could miss that whole lobster? It is an anime bento lunch for the eater with distinguished tastes! While Yuusaku shared his bento, how many of you out there would be willing to give up anything in this anime bento?

The Zanpakuto are actually a series of sentient weapons, which draw out a users inner abilities. They’re wielded by Shinigami and, as well as abilities, have forms that derive from their users. They’re also all able to return souls wandering round the world to the afterlife. Zanketsu is the first weapon on the list that takes on a persona of it’s own, and represents Ichigo’s most base instincts and dark-side, capable of possessing Ichigo himself.

[Information episodes=" 24 " aired=" October 04, 2013 to Mar 28th, 2014 "]

The Scissor Blade, when combined, form a giant weaponized scissor. Their key ability in Kill La Kill is to sever life-fibers, which are used to make the powered uniforms and also the Kamui, made completely of life-fibers. My favorite moment was when Ryuko comibes the scissors into an larger than life attack in Kill la Kill’s final OVA, giving the series it’s grand conclusion. It’s an essential part of Ryuko’s power, and though Senketsu might be Ryuko’s heart, the scissor blade is definitely her right arm.

8. Ragnarok – Soul Eater

Soul Eater dvd
[Information episodes=" 51 " aired=" Apr 07, 2008 to Mar 30, 2009 "]

Ragnarok is one of the Mesiters of Soul Eater, living beings which serve as weapons. Unlike most of the Meisters, Ragnarok is a total jerk. However, he is very powerful. Composed of Chrona’s own black blood, Ragnarok is incredibly strong, capable of using Chrona’s blood to protect her, to using it as projectiles against enemies, as well as Scream resonance, which enables him to act almost as a saw. From the very first fight scene it was clear how big a threat that Ragnarok posed to the protagonists, and was intimidating all the way through Soul Eater.

[Information episodes=" 103 " aired=" October 03, 2006 to Sep 30, 2008 "]

Mugen is wielded by Yu Kanda, and has a whole host of supernatural powers. It’s derived from ‘Innocence’, the power that Kanda and others use to fight Akuma, demon like beings. Mugen has a number of it’s abilities which bolster it’s own strength as well as Imbue Kanda with greater abilities. From the very first time we see Kanda use ‘Kaiju: Ichigen”, it was clear that the abilities that Mugen has fit very well with the dark, fantasy universe of D. Gray Man

6. Dimensional Spirit Sword – Yu Yu Hakusho

dvd Yu Yu Hakusho
[Information episodes=" 112 " aired=" Oct 10 1992 to Jan 7, 1995 "]

Kuwabara’s spirit sword is a sword made from his own spirit energy. The dimension sword is sort of an enhanced version of the spirit sword, and it’s literally capable of cutting into different dimensions and psychic barriers. The dimensional sword is also awesome because, instead of relying simply on Kuwabara’s own ability, it’s basically able to cut through anything simply on it’s own power. It’s a level of strength that surpasses the original spirit sword and just about any other sword in Yu Yu Hakusho.

5.Tessaiga - Inuyasha

Inuyasha-DVD
[Information episodes=" 167 " aired=" October 16, 2000 to Sep 13, 2004 "]

The Signature sword of Inuyhasha made from the fang of his own father, the Inu no Taisho. Where as the sword of Inuyasha’s Brother, Tensaiga, preserves life, Tessaiga is a true offensive weapon. Some of the best moments in Inuyasha were when he and Sesshomaru, his brother, square off with their very different blades. It also has a mind of it’s own, not unlike the Zanpakuto from Bleach. It takes Inuyasha some time to master it, but the more he uses it the more it seems that Tessaiga has tricks up it’s sleeve. From the famous wind-scar, to it’s adamant and dragonskin forms, Tessaiga is a truly powerful weapon.

4. Toyako Bokutō (Gintama)

gintama 2015
[Information episodes=" 201 " aired=" April 4, 2006 – March 25, 2010 "]

Toyako Bokuto ‘Lake Toya’ can literally cut through anything, which is hilarious and fitting for Gintama given it’s totally nondescript appearance. Made from the bark of a 10,000 year old tree on a distant planet, it’s actually a Hoshikudaki which literally translates to ‘Star Destroyer.’ It’s a little wooden sword with a beyond audacious ability and pedigree, let’s hope the rebel alliance doesn’t come up against it soon.

3. Ea – Fate/Stay:Night

[Information episodes=" 24 " aired=" Jan 07, 2006 to Jun 17, 2006 "]

Though Excalibur, Saber’s noble phantasm is much more famous and emblematic of the series, Ea, is more powerful. It’s the crown jewel of Gilgamesh’s noble armory. Gilgamesh himself see’s Excalibur as Ea’s only rival, one of the only counterparts that he deems it worthy enough of a challenge to use Ea, though he also uses it against Rider in Fate/Zero. Both in Fate/Zero as well as Unlimited Blade Works, when Ea comes out, you know it’s serious business. It’s a magnificent weapon for one of Anime’s most magnificent jerks.

2. Sword of the Dragonslayer - Berserk

berserk the golden age arc dvd
[Information episodes=" 26 " aired=" October 07 1997 to Mar 31, 1998 "]

"Dragons are dragons because humans can't beat 'em. So, what's a man who beats dragons?" The Sword of the Dragonslayer is practically Iconic, as is Berserk itself and the character who wields it, Guts. Even though Gut’s first huge sword, which he uses in the Golden Age arc, was deadly enough, the Dragonslayer truly takes it to another level. Legions of soldiers and demons have been ripped apart by it, and it’s a sword which signifies Gut’s larger than life status. In summation, I’ll leave us with maybe the most well-known Berserk quote that gives you a sense of awe the dragonslayer deserves, ‘That thing was too big to be called a sword. Too big, too thick, too heavy and too rough.’

1. Sakabato – Ruroni Kenshin

Rurouni Kenshin dvd
[Information episodes=" 94 " aired=" Jan 10,1996 to Sept 08, 1998 "]

Sakabato is is just so cool and memorable it outclasses a number of more swords that are more powerful than It on this list. The reverse blade sword, a weapon designed not to kill, wielded by a man who wanted something beyond his bloody past. It’s a big part of what makes Ruroni Kenshin stand out as a series, as well as the heart of the show itself. Seeing Kenshin use Sakabato against the hardened killers of the Meiji era gave me thrills as a kid, and great memories as an adult.

One of the things to note is that I don’t always mean strongest swords, but often what’s cool, or more significant or meaningful within the series itself. I hope you enjoyed reading this list and the explanations. Let us know what you think in the comments below and let’s get a conversation going!

neon-genesis-evangelion-7 Should Watching Anime be Based on Reviews from Others

In countless instances, just hearing “Evangelion is the best anime of all time” or “Evangelion is the worst anime of all time” is enough to get someone’s attention. However, is hearing or reading that something is the best or worst really enough to pique somebody’s interest to watch something through? As an anime site that covers news, editorials, fun lists, recommendations, and reviews, it will seem very awkward to read an article of this particular nature from us, but it is something that is worth exploring. Today’s editorial will be on the question of whether fans should rely on reviews to determine if they should watch an anime or not.

[ad_top2 class="mt40"]

What Makes A Quality Review

Saying something is the best or worst is fine and all but for many of those interested, they want to know why it is. Why is Evangelion the best of all time? Why is it the worst? Through a quality review that can back each respective argument, maybe that review can persuade or dissuade a new audience. So what defines a quality review? Mainly, it it’s one that focuses on how the story and its characters are good or bad. Without trying to get into spoilers, an effective review can help indicate why the anime has a very captivating story that is worth immersing the viewer in, and that its characters are relatable and engaging. In addition, the review also shares what is good and bad about its art and animation. There are some reviewers on YouTube, other sites, and on Honey’s Anime who have an extensive educational and professional background in art (and probably animation) that can also talk about some of the animation techniques in a certain scene, or why it may not be that impressive. For some other fans, reviewers like to passionately share the quality of the soundtrack and why it works or doesn't work with a certain anime. Reviewers who have a musically inclined background can share why the chord progressions of a certain piano track work well with the mood, or why the opening and ending songs are a great warm up or cool down for a series. Sometimes a great review can compare and contrast the original Japanese track and the English dub track. Maybe someone with experience in acting or voice acting could discuss the performance of a voice actor for a certain character. The reviewer can share how the Japanese and/or English version captures its characters more effectively over the other, etc. If the reviewer is fluent in Japanese, maybe they can provide a great argument on why the Japanese performance is superior or inferior. A great review can provide an abundant amount of information and some of that info, no matter how trivial, might captivate a new viewer, or it may not. Some reviews like to emphasize the music and voice acting, while some choose not to. Different reviewers with different backgrounds can all potentially offer something educational even to those who are already familiar to certain anime whether it be something as mainstream as Naruto or as unknown as Popolocrois. With much of Honey’s staff located in Japan, we are positive that the quality of our reviews, lists, and articles can give a distinct perspective that not many others can.

What Makes A Bad Review

Naruto-Should-Watching-Anime-be-Based-on-Reviews-from-Others

So what defines a bad review? To some, it is a review that does not really back its arguments on why it is good or bad, and just simply says it is and that's it. There are numerous reviews on other sites and on YouTube in which the reviews are more of a synopsis and do not get into detail on the qualities of the anime that is being reviewed. The review will do little-to-nothing in sharing personal feelings or providing any other useful background information- nothing aboutthe art and animation, and/or next to nothing on the music and voice acting. Whether it be games, anime, or movies, a good number of YouTube reviewers are more about promoting themselves or their “character,” as opposed to what they are reviewing. However, there are some really excellent dedicated anime YouTube reviewers out there that provide very great reviews. Sometimes, reviews can just be centered around being hateful and provide nothing constructive. And there are reviews in which the reviewer is just a fanboy/fangirl and does nothing to provide an effective argument on why an anime is great. Some do it for humor, some do it to purposely generate controversy, and some just enjoy being trolls and/or haters. Yes, some of these reviews can be funny, but many of them do nothing to provide information on why they don't recommend the anime other than that it is overrated, or plain bad.

Everybody Has An Opinion

adventart610 Should Watching Anime be Based on Reviews from Others

The difficulty with relying on reviews in some instances is when people have differing opinions. For many mainstream titles such as Naruto and Dragon Ball, there are an equal amount of thought-provoking reviews that call it the best and worst. Despite the constant praise of Final Fantasy VII Advent Children and it winning best picture at the America Anime Awards, there are some very excellent reviews that provide YouTube viewers with insight on why it could be one of the most overrated anime of all time. Granted, many big-name titles out there can collect differing opinions, but maybe a well-presented review of an anime can be the hook. In some instances, there are reviews on this site and on YouTube that are dedicated to reviewing lesser known anime from either modern times, or from the older eras and those reviews help capture new audiences. Sometimes an effective review of a lesser known anime – whether it be the first Garo anime series or Wangan Midnight can help because that reviewer already has an established reputation as a trusted reviewer. Sometimes the fact that nobody else has an opinion on a certain anime can help a viewer make a decision in their selection process, or maybe it doesn't. In the end, only the viewer can make that choice, which brings me to my next point.

Are They Really Helpful?

transformer Should Watching Anime be Based on Reviews from Others

Compared to the Hollywood industry, there is no formal study or first-hand research on whether or not a review, or how unanimous praise or bashing of an anime affects whether or not audiences choose to view it. With popular and reliable movie review sites like Rotten Tomatoes and professional critics having Michael Bay’s Transformers franchise being ranked as some of the worst movies of all time, the constant bashing of those movies have not stopped them from being a multi-billion dollar hit. With some movies like Dredd having universal praise with critics, its comic fans, and the creators of the original comic, all it managed to capture was a cult audience. Then again, lack of advertising and the stigma of Stallone’s version back in 1995 may have given the public a very negative pre-conception of the movie, which resulted in its unfortunate failure. With anime fandom being a younger and smaller audience, most fans these days just explore the Internet, and not just TV and movie theaters. With a smaller audience, word-of-mouth and forums work with passing along what is recommended to watch. Sometimes people care more about style over substance. In cases like Transformers, in addition to its highly emphatic special effects, the brand already had a long established legacy and brought back some voice actors of the original animated series such as Peter Cullen and Frank Welker. Plus, the franchise has award worthy actors like Marky Mark now headlining the franchise to pull in more viewers.

To Rely or Not to Rely on Reviews?

Sometimes a good review may not lead to a large audience, and a negative review will not lead to it failing. In the end, the power of the audience is in their wallets to choose what they want to view. Reviews can be a very helpful tool when they are very appealing and very constructive in their arguments. They can give audiences a general idea on what to check out. Sometimes, bad anime is worth watching just for the heck of it, such as the Tekken anime, which has been constantly labeled as one of the worst animes of all time. Some people at times just seem to enjoy the novelty of watching something bad. In other instances, even after constant positive reviewing of titles such as Now and Then, Here and There, it still remains as one of the most underrated titles even after 15 years! And with more popular titles such as Final Fantasy VII Advent Children, the excellently presented negative reviews for it may change your mind on whether or not you think it is really worthy of its praise, or maybe it won't. In the end, we the audience can only judge for ourselves and make the decision. The review may help you, or maybe it won't, but they are a great start.

Top 10 Emo Anime Girl

It does seem like for each question man is able to answer, two more would emerge to take its place. We love mystery, and we love to satisfy our curiosity by probing around things we do not fully understand. This is evident in our inner desire to be drawn to people with an air of mystery around them. For a lot of teenagers, it is conventional knowledge that their first yearnings for love are usually not directed at the open-hearted, vocal peer. Crushes and the like are usually directed at the brooding, gloomy, person sitting somewhere at the back of the room. I guess people really just love to be close to mysteries that we simply cannot help but probe. Even in anime, characters with a serious disposition, a mysterious past, and an air of detachment are usually considered the cool characters of the series. Of course, this is even more true when it comes to female characters. A lot of anime have utilized the mysterious, emo female trope during the past years, with very huge success. We love emo girls in anime. There is just something about them that draws us. With this in mind, here is our list of the Top 10 Emo Anime Girls!

[ad_top2 class="mt40"]

10. Inori from Guilty Crown

[imageCharacterWithAnime character='guilty crown Inori Yuzuriha' anime='guilty crown dvd']
[Information episodes=" 22 " aired=" October 2011 - March 2012 "]

The first emo girl in our list is the mysterious Inori. Being a frontliner of a subversive musical band and a member of an anti-government rebel group, she is actually pretty badass. However, her disposition is extremely serious, and she rarely openly shows her emotion. In one of the later episodes of the series, Shu was on the verge of a nervous breakdown, and to calm him down, Inori promises him that they will never part. She does this in classic anime emo girl style, however, without tears, and almost without a change in intonation. For most of the series, Inori can usually be seen as someone who rarely speaks, or when she does, her words are very few. Truly, she is one emo anime girl that we cannot forget.

9. Saeko Busujima from Highschool of the Dead

[imageCharacterWithAnime character='high school of the dead saeko' anime='Highschool of the Dead dvd 2']
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" July 2010 - September 2010 "]

The ferocious Saeko may be able to fell dozens of zombies in a few seconds, but make no mistake. She still does have a heart full of emotion, as shown in the episode when she opens up a little to Takashi when they got stuck in a shrine. That one time was her only moment of real emotion in the series however, as most of the time, she is usually depicted as a formidable female swordsman with a deadly blade and a few words. Calm and cool even in the face of a zombie apocalypse, Saeko is one of the emo girls in anime that you definitely would not want to cross when she’s cross. Pardon the pun, but yes, she is the epitome of the girl who is as dangerous as she is emo.

8. Touka Kirishima from Tokyo Ghoul

[imageCharacterWithAnime character='ToukaKirishima' anime='Tokyo Ghoul dvd']
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" July 2014 - September 2014 "]

Touka may show a very brash personality, as shown in her initial interactions with the series’ main character, Kaneki. However, behind her abrasive exterior lies a girl who is immensely lonely and even a little bit afraid. In the first season of the anime, she is quite an active character, but after Kaneki’s departure from Anteiku, she adopts a very emo disposition. Though still powerful, Touka has shown a significant increase in her sensitivity to the people around her, whom she cares for the most. She also spends much of the anime sorrowfully contemplating her tragic past and her relationship with Kaneki, who ends up becoming more powerful than her.

7. Rukia Kuchiki from Bleach

[imageCharacterWithAnime character='rukia kuchiki00' anime='Bleach Movie2 dvd']
[Information episodes=" 366 " aired=" October 2004 - Match 2012 "]

Rukia is actually the first character in the series created by the author, Tite Kubo. In fact, her design is said to be the very prototype that the author used to as a basis for the other shinigami in the series. She first meets the main character, Ichigo, in the middle of a hollow hunt, where she was ultimately forced to transfer her power to the unassuming young man. Rukia is a soul reaper, and she acts just like the very archetype of her character. Noted to always be graceful and pristine, she is very modest and cool. Her demeanor also suggests that she is always in control, despite her painful past. She is also said to never open up her heart for anyone, and as such, may seem very distant and emo at times.

6. Maria Tachibana from Sakura Wars

[imageCharacterWithAnime character='Maria Tachibana Sakura Wars' anime='dvd Sakura Wars']
[Information episodes=" 25 " aired=" April 2000 - September 2000 "]

Born to a Russian diplomat and a Japanese mother, the imposing Maria is one of the characters in Sakura Wars with a very painful past. After being traumatized by the untimely death of her squad captain, she decides to completely shut off her feelings, becoming a merciless sniper who was responsible for innumerable kills. She eventually moved to America. where she became a professional killer for the mafia, before she was ultimately recruited as a part of the Teikoku Kagekidan. Maria is a very intimidating woman, mainly because of her tall figure (she stands at 186 cm) and her tendency to be very reserved. She’s very serious, and rarely shows her feelings. And in the times that she does, she nonetheless maintains a very cool disposition.

5. Freya from Chobits

[imageCharacterWithAnime character='Chobits Freya' anime='chobits dvd']
[Information episodes=" 26 " aired=" April 2002 - September 2002 "]

Freya stands as the antithesis of the Chobit’s main heroine, Chii, who is the epitome of innocence and purity. Freya started off as a special creation of Ichiro Mihara, who wanted to give his wife the daughter that she could never have. In order to make her as close to human as possible, Ichiro installed a special system that enabled her to fall in love with someone she chose for herself. She did, eventually, falling in love with Ichiro, her “father.” Of course, as her young mind adapted to the realization that her father will always love her mother in a more special way, Freya eventually broke down due to her emotional pain. Thus, her disposition when she does appear in the anime is one of a woman who has experienced much pain and loss, thereby making her as emo as they come.

4. Clare from Claymore

[imageCharacterWithAnime character='Clare Claymore' anime='Claymore']
[Information episodes=" 26 " aired=" April 2007 - September 2007 "]

Clare is one of the most serious and reserved in the anime, choosing to speak a few words and rarely opening up to anyone. Her past was tragic, as she was able to barely feel love before it was violently torn away from her. After the incident with her savior, Teresa of the Faint Smile, Clare becomes an offensive-type Claymore that is pretty much emotionally detached from everyone else. This could be seen in numerous times in the anime, where she is depicted to show difficulty in expressing herself freely, even in instances that require an emotional response. Clare moves and lives by revenge alone, and for everyone else (even her companion, Raki), she can be as cold and distant most of the time.

CLAYMORE wallpaper

3. Mikasa Ackerman from Attack on Titan

[imageCharacterWithAnime character='Mikasa Ackerman' anime='attack on titan dvd1']
[Information episodes=" 25 " aired=" April 2013 - September 2013 "]

Mikasa is arguably one of the most powerful human characters in the Attack on Titan universe, being a heralded as a genius whose combat and titan-slaying skills are almost at par with that of the best. Personality-wise, however, Mikasa is as emo as they come, rarely showing emotion except in times when Eren’s welfare is compromised. She also maintains a very cool exterior, and is not open to expressing herself freely. Part of this is due to her violent and tragic childhood, where she witnessed the brutal murder of her father and mother. She was later saved by Eren, who moved her enough to the point of her being able to stab her kidnapper to death. Though Mikasa has some tender moments in the anime, she is still the anime’s poster emo girl.

2. Rei Ayanami from Neon Genesis Evangelion

[imageCharacterWithAnime character='Evangelion Rei Ayanami cosplay00' anime='evangelion DVD']
[Information episodes=" 26 " aired=" October 1995 - March 1996 "]

Rei Ayanami is the first child who was chosen to pilot an Evangelion. In the controls of Unit 00, she is a fearsome fighter, usually opting to make decisions in battle which suggest that she does not care about her own welfare or safety. Personality-wise, she is very distant and cold, practically showing no emotion at all regardless of the circumstance. In fact, her ridiculous coolness and seeming apathy has made Asuka, the pilot of Unit 02, call her a “puppet” and a “doll.” Though Rei does get close to Shinji a little bit during the course of the series, she still retains a very distant personality. It’s quite notable however, to mention that Rei’s cold and distant personality actually gave her a massive fanbase. In fact, until this day, the template used in characterizing Rei is still used for more recent anime releases (think Inori, the number 10 girl in our list, for example). The fact that she has one of the prettiest faces in anime actually helps her cause a lot.

1. Yukishiro Tomoe from Rurouni Kenshin: Trust and Betrayal

[imageCharacterWithAnime character='Rurouni Kenshin yukishiro tomoe' anime='rurouni kenshin tuioku hen dvd']
[Information episodes=" 4 " aired=" February 1999 - September 1999 "]

At the top of our list is none other than the woman behind Hitokiri Battousai himself, Yukishiro Tomoe. Originally engaged to a man that Kenshin coldly murders in cold blood, Tomoe was hired in order to discover the manslayer’s weakness. However, she ended up falling in love with Kenshin, whom she discovers is actually a peace-loving young man who is fighting in the war because of his sincere beliefs. Eventually, Tomoe got a little reprieve from her sorrow when she and Kenshin had to flee to a mountain safe house. However, such happiness is extremely short-lived, as the appearance of her younger brother, Enishi, heralded the grim events that would ultimately brand Kenshin with his iconic X-shaped scar. Beautiful, reserved, graceful, and with a past so tragic it can break anyone’s spirit, Tomoe is the epitome of the emo anime girl.

BONES were the guys who did FMA after all. To do that kind of a job over a whole year, they have to be gods. So my hopes are high.
I can rest easy if it's BONES! Trigger was good too.
HeroAca's been the talk of the town lately, so I got interested. Let's wait to see how the anime looks!

10. L Lawliet from Death Note

[imageCharacterWithAnime character='deathnote L prof' anime='death note DVD']
[Information episodes=" 37 " aired=" October 2006 – June 2007 "]

L would be the quirky kind of boyfriend you could just veg at home with. He’s incredibly intelligent which would make for great conversations. You could just watch him flawlessly and swiftly solve crimes and hear about all the cerebral details while you eat sweets with him and lounge around wearing one of his comfy baggy sweaters. His dry, sarcastic sense of humor can also be pretty entertaining if you’re into that. He’s tall, with deep dark eyes, shaggy black hair and he used to be a tennis champion so you know he’s in good shape under those baggy clothes. If you’re into an intellectual Sherlock Holmes kind of guy with a dark side but much more laid back and without the fancy social expectations, L is your man! You can sit however you want, eat whatever you want, wear no shoes and be kind of weird and as long as you’re not a criminal, he won’t judge you. All you’d need to catch him is a clean criminal record and maybe some home-made sweets!

9. Yuuichi Jin from World Trigger

[imageCharacterWithAnime character='Yuuichi Jin World Trigger' anime='world trigger dvd']

There’s some hidden boyfriend material in this underrated anime! With his shaggy light brown hair, blue eyes and confident personality, Jin would make the boyfriend you’d like to show off to all your friends. Not only is he handsome, strong, smart and popular, but he isn’t cocky about it at all. He has a very relaxed personality and doesn’t sweat the small stuff (or the big stuff in some cases). And since his side-effect allows him to see into the future, he would know beforehand if something would upset you or make you happy. You’d never have to worry about arguments with this guy!

Isshiki is another handsome, sexy and carefree guy to add to the list. Except this one is a master chef and loves gardening, lounging and cooking in nothing but an apron or his underwear. He’s charming, funny, has a down-to-earth personality, handsome face and pretty blue eyes. This guy would never let you go hungry and every meal would be like a 5 star restaurant! And while it’s fun to ogle his well-toned body in his usual half-naked style, he knows how to dress up for a special occasion. While he can be a little cold at times (Ha!), he is in reality a caring guy that has just been through a lot. Unlike the rest of the Fairy Tail Members, we would absolutely encourage his disrobing habit! Think about it, whether at the beach or at the ski resort, you’d have eye candy all year round and endless ice in your drinks. And if you end up getting married… imagine the enviable ice sculptures you could have!!

Tall, strong, tan, pierced ears and short green hair. Zoro is tough, and like other guys on this list, kind of a badass. Not to mention he has a strong, muscular bod from all his sword training and fighting. Having a sexy, easy-going samurai like him around means a constant view of his well-defined pecs and abs and handsome face. And all the scars on his body just add to his mystery and coolness factor. Zoro also knows how to relax. Wouldn’t you just love to chill and drink sake with him on some beach or on the Thousand Sunny while watching him be his cool, sexy self? A guy like this needs a girl to soften him up and care for his battle wounds after facing an enemy. Move over Chopper, we got it from here.

Gaara is one of those quiet mysterious guys you really want to get to know. His pale white skin, spiky red hair, aqua green eyes and tanuki-like black eye rings give him an awesome rock star look that many girls would fawn over. And even though he has a dark past, in reality he’s just a sweet boy who has always been in search of love. All he wants is to make friends to care for and who care for him, to love and be loved. Gaara would take good care of you and appreciate all the love and affection you gave him. He’s one lonely emo boy you’d love to fix. Also, being the Kazekage’s girl doesn’t sound half bad!

2. Makoto Sunakawa from Ore Monogatari (My Love Story)

[imageCharacterWithAnime character='ore monogatari Makoto Sunakawa' anime='dvd My Love Story']
[Information episodes=" 24 " aired=" April 2015 - September 2015 "]

Makoto Sunakawa, or Suna as his friends call him, is the most handsome boy in school. While he could have a different girl every day if he so wished, he’s just not that kind of guy. He rejects any girl who speaks badly of his best friend Takeo and girls who seem superficial. He’s quiet, reserved, and has few friends, but he cares for them deeply, so you know you’d be his priority (as long as you don’t badmouth Takeo!). He is calm and cool and an amazing listener. Suna is the kind of guy that would remember everything you ever said to him, what you wore and when, and giggle lovingly when he suddenly remembers something silly that happened to you a long time ago. Suna deserves a good girl that can restore his faith in women. He usually keeps his personal problems quiet so as not to worry anyone so you could always be his emotional support.

1. Prince Zen Wistaria from Akagami no Shirayuki-hime (Snow White with the Red Hair)

[imageCharacterWithAnime character='Zen Wistaria Akagami no Shirayuki-hime' anime='Akagami no Shirayukihime']
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" July 2015 – September 2015 "]

ismatic and very adventurous, lighthearted and down-to-earth for a prince. He has been betrayed before because of his position as royalty so he values loyalty and honesty above all. Zen isn’t in this list because he’s a prince, but because of how much he cares for the woman he loves. He goes out of his way and couldn’t care less about his status as prince if his love is in danger. Although, honestly, his silver hair, handsome face and beautiful blue eyes definitely add to his appeal. Zen is a prince that would treat you like a princess and sacrifice it all for you if he had to. Though, he would always let you be free and make your own choices. If you give him love, support, and honesty, one day he’d probably gently steal a kiss from you and ask you to run off with him on an adventure.

Well, there you have it! 10 guys that are so sexy, smart, funny, cool, romantic, caring, laid back, talented, slightly broken - or some combination of these aspects - that they’d make great boyfriends! It wasn’t easy narrowing it down though, so we have to mention a few guys who almost made the list. Kamina from Gurren Lagann is strong, and cool, but can also show his true emotions when he’s with the right girl. Shizuo from Durarara! is a superhumanly strong, blond, handsome, sunglasses-wearing cool guy who’d always have your back and can probably whip up some decent drinks since he was at one point a bartender. And Rom from Show by Rock is smart, sexy, responsible, tan, and muscular, not to mention he’s a rock star! So, what do you think? Are any of these guys in your list? Who else would you pick as your anime boyfriend? Don’t forget to let us know in the comments section below! Nya~!

Alchemy is a science where one understands the structure of matter, breaks it down, then rebuilds it. However, it is not an all-powerful technique, as one cannot create something out of nothing. If one wishes to gain something, one must present something of equal value. This is the concept of equivalent exchange, the fundamental basis of alchemy. However, there is a taboo in alchemy. Human transmutation. One must not commit this act.

Preview (No Spoilers)

After their mother’s death, brothers Edward and Alphonse Elric committed a taboo in alchemy known as human transmutation. After failing in their attempt to bring back their mother from the dead, Edward lost his left leg and Alphonse lost his entire body as toll for the transmutation. Desperately, Edward made a desperate attempt to transmute back his brother’s soul into a suit of armor, thus losing his right arm. A few years later, Edward and Alphonse decided to become State Alchemists to search for the legendary Philosopher’s Stone that can bring back their bodies.

Edward Elric Bio

Despite the fact that Edward Elric is very young, he earned his State Alchemist certification when he was 12 years old, making him the youngest State Alchemist there is. Edward is very determined when it comes to achieving his goal to get their bodies back and would stop at nothing to make sure that he does so. Having that mentality does have its downsides as Edward often puts himself in dangerous situations. You’d be surprised how many times Edward manages to bounce right back after a tragedy. Here’s 5 highlights of Edward Elric worth mentioning in Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood!

Edward Elric Highlights

1. Brotherhood relationship

01 Top 5 “Edward Elric” Highlights

After failing the attempt to resurrect his mother, Edward developed a really close bond with his brother, since he is the only family member he has left. Edward Elric secretly blames himself for that incident that resulted in Alphonse Elric losing his entire body. In Episode 9 "Created Feelings", it was revealed that Edward was too afraid to ask Alphonse if he hates him for making him lose his body. It was really heart-warming to see this soft side of Edward. Alphonse misunderstood Edward’s intention, and thought that what Edward was afraid to tell him was the fact that Edward created him as an artificial soul and gave him a set of fake memories infused into his armor body. Edward snapped and left the room, leaving Winry Rockbell, their childhood friend to ‘smack’ some sense back into Alphonse. The two made up immediately after a sibling fight, and it became a stepping stone for them to grow stronger both mentally and physically.

2. Strong-willed

02 Top 5 “Edward Elric” Highlights

It may not come as a surprise to you that Edward Elric is a very determined and strong-willed individual. After becoming a State Alchemist, Edward decided to burn down his house, as it signifies that there is no turning back until they get their bodies back. Edward engraved “3 Oct 11” onto his State Alchemist pocket watch as a reminder of the day they burned down the house. In Episode 11 “Miracle at Rush Valley”, during their trip to Rush Valley, his pocket watch was stolen by Paninya who works for Dominic LeCoulte, an automail master who lives in the mountains. As Edward pursued the pickpocket, one thing led to another and Winry decided to apply for apprenticeship under Dominic and was able to retrieve Edward’s pocket watch from Paninya. Winry and Paninya were the first to find out about the engraving on Edward’s pocket watch.

3. Height sensitive

03 Top 5 “Edward Elric” Highlights

Edward Elric is really sensitive when it comes to his height. He is quite short for his age and people often mistake his brother Alphonse Elric for himself. Since Alphonse’s body is the suit of metal armor, and Edward Elric’s State Alchemist title is “Fullmetal Alchemist”, a lot of people think that Alphonse is the Fullmetal Alchemist. This annoys Edward every time. In episode 24 “Inside the Belly”, we see that Edward Elric remembered and counted the total number of times Envy called him a “runt” which really annoyed Edward. In episode 9 “Created Feelings”, we find out that the fact that Edward doesn’t like drinking milk could be the contributing factor to his height problem. It is really entertaining to see Edward’s reactions to these kind of insults.

4. Childhood crush

04 Top 5 “Edward Elric” Highlights

Ah, the romantic cliché that is childhood friendship. Edward’s romantic interest for Winry Rockbell, his childhood friend, doesn’t really blossom till the end of the series. Although there are tidbits throughout the series. One such time was in episode 23 “Girl on the Battlefield”, when Winry realized that she had fallen in love with Edward. Edward on the other hand, tries to hide his feelings for Winry throughout the series and doesn’t really show them until the last episode.

5. Character Development

05 Top 5 “Edward Elric” Highlights

The character development for this character is outstanding. You can actually notice how much Edward matures, both physically and mentally. Somehow he outgrew Winry and at the end of the series, it’s clear that Edward is now taller than Winry. Edward also learns to acknowledge his father Hohenheim a bit better, and was able to let go of any past resentments towards him arising from Hohenheim leaving them when they were little.

Spoilers!

06 Top 5 “Edward Elric” Highlights

Towards the end of the series, inepisode 63 "The Other Side of the Gateway", Edward Elric finally figured out a way to bring Alphonse’s body back without using the Philosopher’s Stone. He exclaimed that it was the last transmutation that the Fullmetal Alchemist will ever do. After arriving at the other side of the gate, Ed sacrifices his Gate of Truth which renders him unable to use alchemy ever again, but he is able to bring back his brother’s body.

07 Top 5 “Edward Elric” Highlights

The ending in Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood is similar to the one from the manga version, as it gives out a more fulfilling ending. Scar and Miles were assigned together to help sort out the Ishvalan policies; with the help of Dr. Marcoh, Roy Mustang was able to regain his eyesight and his subordinate Jean Havoc was able to regain the use of his legs. Edward and Alphonse made a decision to travel separately as Edward heads out to the West of the country and Alphonse heads out to the East. Ling Yao returned to Xing and became the emperor but agreed to protect all the other rival clans including May Chang’s. Edward eventually married Winry and they have a family together. Overall, I think Edward’s determination and strong-willed nature is something worth highlighting in this anime. Despite this being a fictional anime, it is uniquely inspiring as it reflects how we should work hard for our goals and face tough life challenges with a decent amount of determination. “A lesson without pain is meaningless. That’s because no one can gain without sacrificing something. But by enduring that pain and overcoming it, he shall obtain a powerful, unmatched heart. A fullmetal heart.” Does that quote from Edward Elric motivate you in some way? Do you agree with those 5 highlights I’ve stated above? Be sure to let me know if there are other things you like about Edward Elric and leave them in the comments below!
