It's here!!
The culture festival part is pretty bad though... I wonder what they'll do.
There was no escaping a second season with how it ended, but I'm happy it's coming so soon!
They didn't cover it until the finals yet, so I knew they would eventually make this, but it came sooner than I imagined.

concrete-revolutio1

Overflowing with technicolor animation and whiplashing time skips, Concrete Revolutio has the potential to be a great, if not groundbreaking anime. Combining magic, super heroes, yokai, and politics, this latest offering from Bones has a little bit for everyone. Due to its loose sense of time, many viewers may have already given up on this show. But, for those still sticking with Concrete Revolutio through thick and thin, waiting for the next episode can seem like forever (where is a time jump for this?). The following is a list of anime that resemble Concrete Revolutio to tide over those waiting for the weekly installment. Now without further ado, let’s unleash the action!

Similar Anime to Concrete Revolutio

1.Punch Line

Punchline dvd
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" April 2015-June 2015 "]

Punch Line follows the story of Yuuta Iridatsu, a high school boy particularly sensitive to girl’s panties. Through a variety of incidences, a mysterious figure steals Yuuta’s body, reducing him to a sprit. While trying to regain his body, Yuuta soon finds himself shouldering the responsibility of saving the world. Throw in superheroes, robots, and plenty of action, and we have a show that is really rolling the punches. Though Punch Line features more fanservice than Concrete Revolutio, it shares the latter’s overly saturated color palettes and wild narratives. Also, much like Concrete Revolutio, Punch Line can take some warming up time before one really becomes engrossed in the story. However, it certainly does reward those with patience. For the fans that love colorful aesthetics, an enigmatic plot, and a slow boiling show, Punch Line might be up their alley.

2. Kyoukai no Kanata (Beyond the Boundary)

Kyoukai no Kanata dvd
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" October 2013– December 2013 "]

For those who love all things Kyoto Animation, Kyoukai no Kanata will not disappoint. The anime depicts the story of Akihito Kanbara, a half human and half youmu, or supernatural creature, as he confronts and eventually helps his hapless classmate Mirai Kuriyama. On a slightly different track than Punch Line, Kyoukai no Kanata resembles Concrete Revolutio due to its focus on the relationship between yokai and humans and the existence of the Spirit World Warriors. Like in Concrete Revolutio, Kyoukai no Kanata is set in a world where both humans and yokai exist. However, yokai are not always benevolent. Much like the Superhuman Bureau, the Spirit World Warriors regulate the yokai and try to maintain the everyday lives of normal humans.

3. Samurai Flamenco

Samurai Flamenco dvd
[Information episodes=" 22 " aired=" October 2013-March 2014 "]

The phrase, “you have to see it to believe it,” might be the most apt when describing this show. For the sake of simplicity, Samurai Flamenco is the story of the self-made superhero, Hazama Masayoshi and the local police officer, Goto, as they try to save the world. Samurai Flamenco seems to depict the story of a hero’s everyday life at least for the first five episodes. While this might not be the first anime that comes to mind when thinking about Concrete Revolutio, Samurai Flamenco arguable resembles it due to its focus on monsters, heroes, and the concern for the meaning of justice. Much like how Jiro Hitoyoshi fights with the Superhuman Bureau to keep monsters in check, Samurai Flamenco’s Hazama Masayoshi fights for justice in his battles against monsters that threaten humanity.

4. Kekkai Sensen (Blood Blockade Battlefront)

[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" April 2015-October 2015 "]

In Kekkai Sensen, the young Leonardo Watch, blessed (or perhaps cursed) with the “All Seeing Eyes of God,” joins Libra, a quasi-order enforcement organization for the “Beyond.” As a part of Libra, Leonardo soon finds himself in pinches well beyond his imagination. Though stylistically different from Concrete Revolutio, Kekkai Sensen, with its stunning animation and cinematography, is just right for those who want a visual treat. Additionally, those who like the Superhuman Bureau will find a similar organization at the heart of Kekkai Sensen: Libra. Just as the Superhuman Bureau regulates superhuman beings, Libra protects humans from the chaos caused by monsters and magic.

5. One Punch Man

One Punch Man dvd
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" October 2015-Currently Airing "]

One Punch Man is the story of Saitama, a superhero who can take out anything with only one punch. But, even with his overpowered status, Saitama still has his struggles, such as finishing his fights fast enough to make it in time for limited-time-sales at the market. One Punch Man is another superhero anime like the previously mentioned Samurai Flamenco that is not the typical hero show. Instead of heroes working independently, we have a larger organization monitoring the activities of these super humans much like the Superhuman Bureau does in Concrete Revolutio. Throw in the monsters that appear throughout the show, and we have an anime with a faint flavor of Concrete Revolutio for the fans that are craving more.

6. Psycho-Pass

Psycho-Pass dvd
[Information episodes=" 22 " aired=" October 2012 – March 2013 "]

Psycho-Pass is an anime set in a dystopian future in which it’s possible for every citizen of Japan to have their state of mind measured and quantified by the Sybil System to monitor mental states and probability of committing a crime. Psycho-passes indicate whether or not a person has a high likelihood of committing a crime and the Public Safety Bureau’s Criminal Investigation Division enforces order with the help of people who are on the brink of being categorized as criminals themselves. On the surface, Psycho-Pass and Concrete Revolutio may not seem that they have much in common. However, when you consider the dystopian and political overtones of both shows, they begin to seem more like one another. Just like how the Superhuman Bureau is a government agency with questionable politics, in Psycho-Pass we have the Public Safety Bureau’s Criminal Investigation Division, an organization that operates under the morally murky justice system. Rather than superhumans and monsters, Psycho-Pass confronts the monsters within all of us.

With hopes, this list satisfies the most avid fan of Concrete Revolutio. Admittedly, these shows are of a wide range of genres. Nonetheless, they share elements of narrative, setting, and tone (particularly dealing with politics and monsters) with Concrete Revolutio. This vampire’s name is Erika Sendo and she is the student council vice-president. At first, their interactions are awkward because she always backs away and becomes uncomfortable in his presence. In the distant future, the Vatican is the only line of defense against vampires. One of their most revered warriors is a priest who is also a crusnik, or a vampire who drinks the blood of other vampires. This man’s name is Abel Nightroad. While traveling, he meets Esther Blanchett, a nun who decides to join Abel on his voyage and aims to train at the Vatican. Soon after, they make contact with the Rosenkruez Orden and Abel’s twin brother, Cain. Their objective is to cause a war between the Vatican and the Empire. It’s up to Cain and “AX” (a special operations group) to prevent them from inciting a massive war. Various characters harbor romantic unrequited romantic feelings. First, there is Ion who has feelings for Esther. Fans commonly “ship” these two together in fanfiction. Second, Esther has an awkward crush on Abel early on. But, it seems to fade away as the story progresses and turns into appreciation and friendship. Third, Caterina Sforza, the founder of AX, possesses one-sided feelings for Abel. She shows jealousy towards his relationship with Esther. Next, there is Noelle Bor who confesses her love to Abel. Which he accepts but gracefully declines. The last one I’ll mention is Abel’s undying love for his deceased lover, Lilith Sahl. After her death, he mourned the loss for over nine hundred years. He still thinks about her to the point of not being able to develop romantic feelings for anybody else.

Kira is the name of Light Yagami’s alter ego he has as the owner of the Death Note and of course, this means that Kira is the name of the judge and jury of life and death. One must have a cool disguise name in order not to get caught so Kira is a good fit right? When talking about the actual name, it does sound pretty cool to just say it and it is cool because of the sound and the fact that it sounds like it can be both a hero and anti-hero’s name. And that is what the name stands for in Death Note as well. In the beginning, it was for pure justice and then Kira slipped over to the dark side. These are some of the facts which make the name Kira cool, but also, it’s cool because of it’s actual meaning in Japanese which perhaps many do not think of: ‘’Kira’’ = ‘’Killer’’.

The name Daisuke is a quite common name when talking about anime and manga. Which is not so strange because it’s a Japanese name but let’s get to the name. Usually because it’s a cool name by sound and how it’s written, this name is normally given to the main character of such stories. It is a cool name because of how it is being said and also because it has a sort of mystery to it, with the strong sounds that are being pronounced.

Here we got a name that speaks for itself. First of all, the name sounds cool and it’s one-of-a-kind when it comes to names. It does help also that the character Goku is pretty darn cool too. But to the actual name, Goku sounds cool because it sounds like it’s out of this world when pronouncing it with the Go and Ku, since this is a pretty rare combination in Japanese names. So again it’s a name that is on the strange side but also happens to be a cool name as well. It’s not a difficult name to remember because of its length and because of the fact that it’s an ‘out of this world’ kind of name, it becomes pretty cool.

Now why it is cool is because of the sounds the name brings out when being said. It has a tone of something that comes from the mystical Nordic countries of Scandinavia in Europe. Which is a cool thing and is why the name made it onto this list. It is kind of short and mysterious which again, is part of the appeal of this name. Because the name is somehow mysterious it brings out a lot of questions and just makes the name seem that much more cool.

[imageCharacterWithAnime character='devil may cry dante' anime='Devil May Cry dvd']
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" June 14, 2007 – September 6, 2007 "]

A name which isn’t as normal when it comes to anime, maybe because it’s an Italian name. The background to Capcom’s Dante in Devil May Cry actually goes back to the philosopher Dante Alighieri ‘Father of the Italian Language’. But enough about history and let’s get to the name. Dante is a name which sounds cool because of how strong the name sounds even though it’s a short name. And when talking about Devil May Cry, Dante is a not a bad name for a half human, half demon slayer. The thing that makes the name cool and fitting for this kind of character is the fact that it has the meaning of ‘enduring,’ which is a quality a demon slayer should have.

It’s cool because it has a short form yet is powerful when spoken. Not only is it because it sounds cool, but it looks cool as well. Kuroyuki-Hime Senpai (Accel World)

Whether you're a student, salaryman, or lazy bum, you've probably had a senpai at least once in your life. A senpai is basically someone who is above you in the field or been at a job longer than you. In Japan, you use the term "senpai" as a way of showing respect, and "kouhai" is a way of reciprocating. There are so many anime senpai characters out there, but not everyone is called a "senpai", which means most of the western audience probably doesn't notice these anime senpai characters. Now, with the "Notice me, Senpai" meme blowing up on the internet, westerners want to know about these senpai! Well, check out this list for the top 10 anime senpai characters.

Yuuta, Takumi, and Shinobu are poor college students all living in the same small, apartment. They may not have a lot of money, but they live together happily finding small pleasures in life. Then they meet Hagumi, a gifted little girl. Shinobu is probably not the senpai you first think of. He's unreliable, noisy, and has a habit of disappearing for long periods of time. Shinobu is basically a senpai by default since his habit of disappearing gets in the way of his university attendance, but there's no denying how talented he is even amongst other university attendees. Shinobu, also, does his part by watching over his kouhai and tries to help them through their troubles. He may not be the most reliable senpai, but he's a senpai that you can trust.

Ryouma lives in the shadow of his father, a famous tennis pro, despite all of his own achievements. He has joined Seigaku a school with one of the best tennis teams in the nation, where he plans on honing his skills as a tennis player with his new teammates in an effort to surpass his father. Tezuka is the captain of the tennis team as well as a third year in high school making him the senpai of a good number of the members of the Seigaku tennis team. As far as anime senpai characters go, Tezuka is probably what most people think of when they hear "senpai" because Tezuka is serious, stoic, and very intelligent. As a senpai and team captain, he must execute punishments for any rules broken, but Tezuka is always fair and does not play favorites. Tezuka is just the type of senpai most of us need.

Honestly, most people would say that Taichi would make a better senpai because he's a better role model, but Chihaya is not a senpai that you should dismiss! Chihaya wants nothing more for her kouhai to grow and develop in karuta so she does not hold back, even if they feel they are too weak, because she has faith in her kouhai. The blossoming of love between two people is something that is considered both sweet and beautiful. After all, it takes an almost magical set of circumstances to properly initiate a full-fledged relationship. However, circumstances always get more interesting the more complicated they get. Thus, one simply cannot help but be drawn to stories that involve not just two persons, but three. The love triangle theme has been around since pretty much the dawn of literature. It does, after all, pander to man’s seemingly genetically predisposed tendency to be drawn to choices that will ultimately affect the course of his life. In anime, the theme of love triangles is very much explored, with titles both modern and classic utilizing love triangles to effectively drive the plot forward. Our list today looks at the most notable love triangles and the reasons why they are significant to us anime fans. Here then, is our list for the Top 10 Anime Love Triangles!

[ad_top2 class="mt40"]

10. Makoto Itou x Kotonoha Katsura x Sekai Saionji - School Days

[three_images_in_row image1='Katsura Kotonoha School Days' image2='School Days Makoto Itou' image3='school days sekai saionji']
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" July 2004 - September 2007 "]

It is said that love itself involves a certain degree of insanity. In anime, there is not one example that can probably attest to this adage more than one of the most controversial titles in recent years, School Days. After all, the story of Makoto, who is widely considered as the worst male lead in anime history, as well as Kotonoha and Sekai, has gone down in anime infamy. The love triangle in this anime is quite graphic, as one sees the main character consistently take advantage of the two female leads for his own gain. He takes advantage of Kotonoha, who sincerely loves him, and he does the same for Sekai, essentially using her as a sexual object simply because she enables his behavior. The dynamic of the three garners the same amount of revulsion that you would get out of a Saw movie, but just like the film, it draws you in with the promise of a worthy conclusion. And when it finally does, you will see just how big a price one would pay if a love triangle benefits only one person.

9. Tuxedo Mask x Sailor Moon x Black Lady - Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon Crystal

[three_images_in_row image1='sailormoon tsukino usagi' image2='sailormoon tuxedo mask' image3='Black Lady Sailor Moon Crystal']
[Information episodes=" 26 " aired=" July 2014 - July 2015 "]

It is no secret that the story of Sailor Moon is essentially the story of love between a lady from the moon and a man from the Earth. Transcending life itself, they are very much destined to be together, fighting by each other’s side, and sacrificing one’s life for the other. In fact, they are quite perfect for each other, until another person comes along with feelings for Tuxedo Mask - someone close. His own daughter. Possessed by dark energy, the issues of Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Mask’s daughter from the future, Chibiusa, come into fruition, turning her into the sultry Black Lady. Though the love triangle only lasted a couple of episodes, it did have a massive effect on the plot of the anime. Throughout their daughter’s stay in present-day Earth, Usagi could not shake off the feeling that her future daughter seems to be taking her partner away from her. As it turns out, she really was, since Chibiusa felt so neglected in the future, she ended up falling in love with the idea of her father in the past. I swear, Black Lady’s passionate kiss with the past incarnation of her father was quite a big shocker for those of us who are used to the childish innocence of the original Sailor Moon series.

8. Hiro Hirono x Miyako Miyamura x Kei Shindou - ef: A Tale of Memories

[three_images_in_row image1='Miyako Miyamura ef' image2='Hiro Hirono ef' image3='Kei Shindou ef']
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" October 2007 - December 2007 "]

This little gem in the slice of life genre actually holds one of the best love triangle stories in recent years. What makes the love story between Hiro, Miyako, and Kei a very engaging tale is the fact that it is so relatable. Everyone of us, I believe, has had an experience with a crush or the like that is very much like the dilemma faced by Hiro in the anime. On one hand is Miyako, whose introduction to Hiro’s life involved an impulsive chase after she inadvertently stole his bike. While the circumstances of their meeting was nowhere near conventional, they do end up spending a somewhat magical time together, during Christmas eve. On the other hand, however, lies Kei, who is basically a constant in Hiro’s life. She genuinely cares for him and even goes to great lengths to make him happy. These two girls signify a very real struggle faced by those who end up choosing between two people - do you choose one that has always been there, or one that might make you happiest?

7. Hitomi Kanzaki x Van Fanel x Allen Schezar - Tenkuu no Escaflowne

[three_images_in_row image1='tenkuu no escaflowne van fanel' image2='Tenkuu no Escaflowne hitomi' image3='tenkuu no escaflowne allen schezar']
[Information episodes=" 26 " aired=" April 1996 - September 1996 "]

When a person is faced with a choice between two possible partners, one usually looks at the positives and the negatives in each person. For Hitomi in Tenkuu no Escaflowne, this struggle is real, for her affections for Van and Allen, two men whom she feels attracted to, ultimately leads her to a huge existential crisis. The young prince Van is brash and cocky, yet he is also ultimately kind and caring. On the other hand, there is the gallant knight, Allen, who is dashing and chivalrous, yet seemingly hiding numerous secrets from his past. Hitomi ultimately faces a tough choice, for both men are good men, and both are actually great matches for her, despite their flaws. This is something that anime viewers were able to relate to, for this very dilemma happens quite often in real life. In this case, how can a girl really choose without losing something significant?

6. Kohta x Lucy x Yuka - Elfen Lied

[three_images_in_row image1='elfen lied lucy' image2='elfen lied kouta' image3='elfen lied nana']
[Information episodes=" 13 " aired=" July 2004 - October 2004 "]

Love can be a battle between those who can provide you with a life of safety and security and those who can provide you with a relationship filled with passion, dangers, and intensity. In the case of Kohta in Elfen Lied, love ultimately becomes a matter of choice between a cousin who has loved him ever since he was a child, and a cataclysmic killer whose heart only he can reach. Yuka provides Kohta with the chance of having a most loving, conventional relationship possible. She loves him deeply, and is willing to do anything for him. However, viewers of the anime know that a relationship with Yuka will only give Kohta a happy, albeit average life. Lucy, on the other hand, is one who does not even hesitate when she kills, yet her feelings for Kohta are very real and sincere. As dangerous as she is, Lucy is the one who can give Kohta a life that Yuka can never give him - a life of rabid intensity and passion that will truly make him feel alive.

5. InuYasha x Kagome Higurashi x Kikyo - InuYasha

[three_images_in_row image1='inuyasha kagome' image2='Inuyasha' image3='inuyasha kikyo']
[Information episodes=" 167 " aired=" October 2000 - September 2004 "]

In a very real sense, love can be a matter of choosing between a person who has touched your heart in the past and a person who has managed to reach your heart in the present. For InuYasha, this is a very prominent dilemma, as he is faced between his love for Kikyou, a woman who shared his love with in the past, and his developing feelings for Kagome, Kikyou’s very own reincarnation, in the present. The tale of InuYasha is first and foremost, an epic of love. Its love story is very much relatable to viewers too, as most of us have faced a somewhat similar dilemma as InuYasha in our past. There are, after all, people who just stay with you, even long after they are gone. These people, like ghosts, forever haunt us, to the point when they make moving forward extremely difficult. This anime shows us a very real concept in love, and does it beautifully.

4. Kyouko Mogami x Ren Tsuruga x Sho Fuwa - Skip Beat!

[three_images_in_row image1='Ren Tsuruga Skip Beat!' image2='Skip Beat! Kyouko Mogami' image3='Sho Fuwa Skip Beat!']
[Information episodes=" 25 " aired=" October 2008 - March 2009 "]

There are times when we get hurt, yet despite the pain, we never can really throw away the person behind the source of our tears. We may say we hate the person, but in our heart of hearts, we know they are still there. This is something that is very well expounded in Skip Beat!, with protagonist Kyouko being hurt badly by Sho, who, despite the young girl’s efforts, continue to haunt her. Even after finding Ren, who in his own mysterious way, shows her care and affection, Kyouko is still rooted in the pain she mercilessly received from a man she truly trusted. Skip Beat! excelled greatly in character development, and this is seen in the way the three characters in the story’s love triangle are fleshed out. While Sho is a egoistic, immature young man, Ren seems to be the complete opposite, being a man who is always calm and in control. For Kyouko, the choice between the two men seems to be simple, yet it isn’t, since Sho’s effects on her go way beyond the present. For many people, this is very true, and this anime manages to portray such inner struggles really well.

3. Hagumi Hanamoto x Yuuta Takemoto x Shinobu Morita - Honey and Clover

[three_images_in_row image1='Yuuta Takemoto Honey and Clover' image2='Hagumi Hanamoto Honey and Clover' image3='Morita Shinobu Hachimitsu to Clover Honey and Clover']
[Information episodes=" 24 " aired=" April 2005 - September 2005 "]

Honey and Clover has become quite a staple when one talks about love triangle anime, and for good reason too. After all, the love story between the gifted Hagu and the two flatmates, Yuta and Morita, is something that is takes straight out of real life. In the anime, Hagu represents the ideal female, one who is essentially a blank slate when it comes to relationships. Her two choices, on the other hand, are very symbolic of the types of persons we end up going for. Morita is the very definition of mystery. The fact that no one even knows what he does and that he disappears for certain periods of time add to his mysterious factor. Add the fact that he shows his affection to Hagu in unconventional ways and you end up with the very definition of a man who seems to have many layers. Takemoto, on the other hand, is the very definition of a man who women consider to be “safe” and risk-free. The fact that he encouraged Hagu to look at him as an older brother ultimately cost him a relationship with a woman he can possibly love for his whole life. At the end of the anime, Hagu finally does fall for one of them, and for those of us who have been in Takemoto’s shoes, we all know how such a conclusion feels like.

2. Yona x Son Hak x Soo Won - Akatsuki no Yona

[three_images_in_row image1='Son Hak Akatsuki no Yona' image2='Yona Akatsuki no Yona' image3='Son Won Akatsuki no Yona']
[Information episodes=" 24 " aired=" October 2014 - March 2014 "]

There are times when those who we fall in love with turn out to be people who we do not even recognize. Sometimes, such revelations cost us greatly, and we end up paying a high price for our mistake. In Akatsuki no Yona, the princess of Kuoka learns this lesson in the costliest way possible, as the man she loved since she was a child turned out to be the man who will rip away everything that she considers precious. If it wasn’t for the intervention of Hak, a man whom she does not feel much affection for, she would certainly have been killed by the man she has been dreaming of marrying. Yet despite the grave betrayal of Soo Won, Yona still holds on to the last pure memory of him before he turned his sword against her father. As the series progresses, viewers also see that even if Yona and Hak are getting closer, Soo Won is still there somewhere in her heart. For us, this is something that happens frequently, as those who have betrayed us in the past still have a tendency to haunt us in the present. RIght now, we still do not know how Yona’s tale would end, but if the anime and manga are to be considered, it is quite certain that the tale of Yona’s, Soo Won’s, and Hak’s love triangle is set to have an explosive conclusion.

1. Hikaru Ichijyo x Misa Hayase x Lynn Minmay - Super Dimensional Fortress Macross

[three_images_in_row image1='Misa Hayase Macross' image2='Hikaru Ichijyo Macross' image3='Lynn Minmay Macross']
[Information episodes=" 36 " aired=" October 1982 - June 1983 "]

At the top of our list is an anime that practically became the definition of a love triangle anime - the 80’s classic, Super Dimensional Fortress Macross. Indeed, the story of the young pilot, Hikaru, the beautiful, headstrong Misa, and the attractive, talented Minmay has gone down in anime history as one of the industry’s most notable love triangle. In fact, it has practically legendary status, with the franchise’s latest iterations, including the critically-acclaimed Macross Frontier, still taking its cue from the original love triangle in the 80’s classic. What makes this love triangle so engaging is the fact that the characters are so fleshed out, viewers will end up empathizing with both Misa and Minmay. Both girls have very endearing qualities that make them great, if not perfect, for Hikaru, and despite the anime concluding with the pilot’s final choice, one cannot help but feel like he should have gone for the other. Love triangles are all about choices and giving up one to get another. This anime portrays this perfectly. The anime closes with a really great note as well, proving that it is the one perfect example of the genre we now know as the space opera.

Of course, other notable love triangles have been portrayed in anime. Some of the special mentions here would be those featured in anime such as Nana, True Tears, and even G Gundam. In anime, the better the characters are developed, the more impact the love triangle will have.

High school star musical DVD

High School Star Musical, known fondly as Star-Myu by devotees, is a musical anime set at the prestigious and competitive Ayanagi Academy music school, famous for its (you guessed it!) music programs. In order for Yuuta Hoshitani to achieve his future dreams of stardom, he and his friends (an awkward inductee, a kabuki wunderkind, and the younger brother of a famous musician) must impress the members of the Kao Council, the cream of the crop of third year students in charge of ensuring the legacy of their Star Team. Dismissed at first for their lack of ability and their personal foibles, when they catch the eye of one of the council members, their dreams have a chance at realization with a lot of hard work and dedication. Star-Mu is a character-driven high school anime with an emphasis on light-heartedness and musical numbers. Although the first season is still mid-swing, viewers learn more about the ensemble cast and the ins and outs of club-life at Ayanagi as the series progresses, and the musical numbers keep ‘em coming back for more. Fans of high school anime, musical anime, and slice-of-life comedy have plenty of reasons to add it to their rotation. As fans, you already know this. Here are six anime for fans of Star-Mu.

6. K-On!

K-On! dvd
[Information episodes=" 13 " aired=" April 2009 – June 2009 "]

At Sakuragaoka Girls High School, the light music club is on its last legs. That is, until recent inductee Yui Hirasawa misunderstands the club poster and expresses interest in joining as one of the required minimum four members, along with classmates Ritsu, Mio, and Tsumugi. There are, however, a few problems: she has absolutely no experience playing music, can’t read sheet music, and doesn’t even own the instrument the other girls want her to play. But the energy and heart of their performance gives her the determination to see it through. K-On! has plenty to offer fans of High School Star Musical. Although it takes place at an all-girls school, the high school environment will feel immediately familiar. The series has a quirky cast of core characters that have a very entertaining dynamic as they learn the ins and outs of musical club life, and there’s plenty of comedy and heart to tie the whole thing together.

5. Uta no Prince Sama

Uta no Prince Sama dvd
[Information episodes=" 13 " aired=" July 2011 – September 2011 "]

Based on a popular visual novel video game series, Uta no Prince-Sama tells the story of idol fan girl and aspiring pop sensation Haruka Nanami. Haruka is a girl with dreams of composing music, especially for the idol she reveres. In hopes of achieving her dreams, she enrolls in Saotome, a prestigious performing arts school. If she is successful at school, she’ll get a head start on rocketing forward in her career, but the extremely competitive, eccentric student body is comprised of aspiring composers, would-be (and actual) idols, famous singers, and more. Much like High School Star Musical, music plays a very important role throughout the course of the show. Saotome Academy is just as cutthroat as Ayanagi, even if the student body is a bit more eccentric. The show’s overarching plot is broken up by plenty of silly character beats (including a transforming, evil prince), and the characters prove themselves incredibly likeable as they navigate the social minefield that is high school while trying to achieve their dreams.

4. Free!

Free! dvd
[Information episodes=" 25 " aired=" July 2013 – September 2014 "]

Free! is set in the small town of Iwatobi, and follows the story of the taciturn but determined Haruka Nanase. The story begins with Haruka and his childhood friends crowned winners of an elementary school swimming tournament before going their separate ways. However, they reunite in Iwatobi High School, and when Haruka loses a swim match in the school’s run down pool, the friends create a swim club, determined to get back in shape and make the club a competitive success. Although this show doesn’t adhere to the musical theme of previous entries on the list, it has plenty to offer fans of High School Star Musical. Obviously, they share the high school setting, although Iwatobi is a much different environment. The story has a heavy emphasis on the bonds formed during club activities, and the dedication demanded to make the club a success. The characters are relatable and have unique foibles that help propel the plot forward as they come to terms with the nature of their friendships and the way things have changed since childhood.

3. La Corda D’Oro: Primo Passo

La Corda D’Oro Primo Passo dvd
[Information episodes=" 25 " aired=" October 2006 – March 2007 "]

Seiso Academy is a school that caters to the musically inclined as well as general students looking to excel in their studies. One such student, Kahoko Hino, is a lover of music who never picked up an instrument. That changes after a fateful run in with Lili, a fairy who gifts Kahoko with a magical violin that allows her to play any songs she truly loves, and she agrees to enter the school’s highly competitive musical tournament, the Concours. La Corda D’Oro offers a somewhat whimsical twist on the musical theme enjoyed by fans of Star-Mu, but the classical music plays an important role in the series. Just like High School Star Musical, it’s a large part of how the characters grow closer. Like other entries on the list, and Star-Mu in particular, the high school setting is an important playground for the characters to interact and explore their feelings for one another, all while trying to juggle the demands of extracurricular activities and rigorous high school academia. As the contest draws nearer, the viewer, like Kahoko, begins to feel a very real fondness for her competition.

2. Nodame Cantabile

Nodame Cantabile dvd
[Information episodes=" 45 " aired=" January 2007 – March 2010 "]

Nodame Cantabile centers around two equally passionate aspiring musicians at Momogaoka College with very different personalities. There is Shinichi Chiaki, an overbearing, somewhat arrogant perfectionist who plays several instruments and dreams of becoming a musical conductor but suffers from a crippling fear of flying over the ocean. Then, there is Megumi Noda, an eccentric, somewhat sloppy pianist who enjoys her music the way she enjoys her life; playful, and by ear. An accidental encounter blossoms into a one-sided romance, and as Megumi tries to win the heart of Shinichi, they get to know themselves and their classmates better. Star-Mu fans will find plenty to love in Nodame Cantabile. Like Star-Mu, the show is heavily inspired by and often features music to express its themes. Much like High School Star Musical, the heart of the show is the budding relationship between its main characters. As the plot progresses and they discover more about themselves and each other, they begin to mature and their relationship develops deeper meaning. But that doesn’t mean that the show doesn’t know how to have fun, since there are plenty of hilarious comedic beats, just like in Star-Mu, to keep the story clipping along.

1. Ouran High School Host Club

Ouran High School Host Club dvd
[Information episodes=" 26 " aired=" April 2006 – September 2006 "]

No list of recommendations for anime that are club oriented and set in high school would be complete without mentioning Ouran High School Host Club. The show takes place at the titular Ouran Academy, an incredibly prestigious high school attended by Japan’s wealthiest, most influential budding socialites. Except, of course, diligent student Haruhi Fujioka. Haruhi is a scholarship student who becomes a de-facto (if indentured) member of the school’s infamous Host Club after shattering a priceless vase. Each episode, the Host Club (comprised of boys catering to a spectrum of feminine desires) hosts events with varying themes. This show has plenty to offer fans of Star-Mu. While music doesn’t play quite as prominent a role in the goings on as it does in other entries on the list, each episode is themed, and music plays a big part of that. Ouran Academy hosts a bizarre but earnest cast of characters inside and out of the Host Club, and they are the heart of the show, much like the aspiring inductees in Star-Mu. The school has so much personality it could be a character in and of itself, and no club seems quite as demanding as the Host Club. While the show oozes an eccentric comedic overtone, just like High School Star Musical, it often deals with rather mature themes, such as gender identity and discrimination, socio-economic perception, and friendship. Definitely check it out.

Motoba Kirie is a creepy anime girl who is often misunderstood as being a bad person, which often leaves her alone. Why is she creepy? Well, even if Kirie is technically kind at heart, she has been known to stalk Umaru home, worship chibi Umaru, and stare in silence for long periods of time, which could make anyone uncomfortable.

Itou Makoto falls in love with Katsura Kotonoha, a girl who rides the same train as he does. His new classmate, Saionji Sekai finds out about his crush and offers to help him. Although Sekai is successful in getting Makoto and Kotonoha together, deep down, she also has feelings for Makoto. When Makoto laments on how to repay Sekai for her kindness, she claims a kiss as her compensation and leaves him dumbfounded in time for his date with Kotonoha. Katsura Kotonoha ranks pretty high on the list of creepy ex-girlfriends which earned her a rightful place as a top 10 creepy anime girl. With her imaginary boyfriend Makoto, obsessive and psychotic behavior, and bloody solutions, Kotonoha is definitely one creepy anime girl that you should not mess with. Well, it's also thanks to her psychoticism that we have the beautiful ending that can only be School Days.

6. Kuroki Tomoko (Watashi ga Motenai no wa Dou Kangaetemo Omaera ga Warui! [WataMote: No Matter How I Look At It, It’s you Guys’ Fault I’m Unpopular!])

[imageCharacterWithAnime character='watashi ga motenai nowa doukangaetemo omae ga warui kuroki tomoko' anime='watamote watashi ga motenai nowa dvd']
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" July 2013 - September 2013 "]

Tomoko's got decades of experience with boys but only in otome games. In reality, she's a teenage shut in who matches the definition of a "mojo" or gloomy girl. Tomoko thought that everything would change for her when she went to high school. She thought she'd make friends, be popular, and get a boyfriend, but once she graduated into high school, Tomoko found that nothing has changed. Now that she's in high school, it's time to take a look at herself in the mirror and fix the problem, but mirrors don't lie and what Tomoko sees isn't what she expected. Kuroki Tomoko is probably what ignorant people think of when they first imagine "female otaku". You'll find yourself constantly switching between sympathy and creeped out when you watch WataMote. Maybe it's her misconception about beauty, erotic dreams in school, or the way she giggles as she is verbally abused by a recording from her favorite seiyuu that makes Tomoko one of the creepiest anime girls, but it's what makes WataMote worthwhile to watch.

While they try to get her to come out of her shell, Sunako is blinded by their brightness and constantly faints with a nosebleed. Is Sunako going to become a lady first or is she going to die from blood loss? Sunako skulks the halls bringing gloom and terror to classmates and her roommates. Sunako is the type to seek refuge in the science laboratory with animals preserved in mysterious fluids and anatomical skeletons. She's the creepy anime girl whose best friends are anatomical figures and skeletons that she keeps hidden away in her dark bedroom! If that doesn't make Sunako creepy enough, Sunako cooks like she's in a slasher film and moves like Sadako. However, with all these traits, Sunako makes Yamato Nadeshiko Shichi Henge a hilarious anime to watch. There are not many shoujo heroines out there that would choose a chainsaw as their weapon of choice.

While humans need the Claymores to survive, they hate them and shun them from society. Raki, a young boy, loses everything to the Yoma and is saved by a Claymore, Clare. With no one willing to care for him, Raki runs off with Clare to join her on her journey and learn about the existence of Claymores, beings who are so hated by society but keep society alive. What makes Priscilla a creepy anime girl, and actually all awakened beings, is the fact that she can seem so coherent and sweet at one moment, and then murderously slay you the next. Combined with Priscilla's control of youki and skill, Priscilla is not a predator you want stalking you. It's truly her innocent demeanor that should really creep you out the most because it lures you in before turning into a monster that will be your demise, but that's also what makes her one creepy anime girl to love because she makes a worthy antagonist.

In this game, only one can survive and become God. Gasai Yuno makes it as the top on our list of creepy anime girls! While her yandere traits add to her creepiness, it's her obsession, blind devotion, ability to kill without remorse, and twisted sense of justice that makes Yuno one of the creepiest anime girls. It's such a contrast to her cute appearance! Even her own future diary is a reflection of her personality: obsessive stalker, but she makes up for everything that Yukiteru lacks. You can't have Mirai Nikki without Yuno.

Inari Zushi - Super Sonico 1
[ad_top1]

Hey everyone! Welcome back to “eat like your anime faves,” a series where I teach you just how to eat like characters do in anime. That’s right; you learn how to cook real Japanese food from anime. I’m back again to give you more of what you love! This week we are still focusing on Bento based dishes! However we have to classical dishes that as soon as you’ve seen them, you’ll recognize them from about every single anime on the planet! First up is inari sushi from Super Sonico! Rich in both it’s deep brown color and it’s sweetness Inari sushi is something that tends to compliment any meal. Now normally, people don’t enjoy sweets in the middle of their meals, however, the nutritional value of these keeps people coming back. Not to mention the sweet, delicious flavor too! This gem comes to us from Super Sonico in the fourth episode. Without further adieu, let’s get right into it!

[ad_top2 class="mt40"]

1. Inaru Sushi from Super Sonico.

Doesn’t that look delicious?
Inari Zushi - Super Sonico 1

What you will need:( Makes 16 portions)

freshly cooked white rice
2 cups
Aburaage
(Deep fried tofu pouches)
8 sheets
water
1 cup
Soy Sauce
4 tablespoons
mirin
4 tablespoons
sugar
4 tablespoons

Optional Ingredients:

  • 3 tablespoons of vinegar (try to use sweet vinegar if you can)
  • 3 tablespoons of sugar
  • 1 tsp of salt

Inari Sushi - Super Sonico 2

How to Cook It:

  1. 1

Aburaage tends to be very oily, so lay them in the bottom of a strainer/colander and then pour boiling water over them to wash off any excess oil.
  2. 2

Next, Start to cook your rice.
  3. 3

Add in all the ingredients marked ☆ into a pot and bring it to a simmer. Simmer for 10 minutes on medium to medium-low heat.
  4. 4

Once your rice is cooked, mix it with the “second step ingredients”: vinegar, sugar, and salt.
  5. 5

Divide the rice into 16 portions.
  6. 6

Drain and dry the aburaage pockets from the pot.
  7. 7

Stuff them with the rice and chill.
  8. 8

    Dig in!

(Note: If you are underage, or new to cooking, be sure to let your parent/guardian know what you are doing. We don’t want you to get hurt!) (Insert image Inari Sushi - Super Sonico 2 )

2.Makimono (sushi) from Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun

Sushi is seen everywhere in anime. The difference here being that in America we do it backwards or “inside out” with the rice on the outside of the sushi. The nori or seaweed is actually supposed to be on the outside! Anyway, one glance and you’ll see that you know this cause it’s in every show! It looks super cute here with the heart shapes in Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun, but you can tailor it to anything. No really, you can put just about anything into makimono. This time we will be looking at a sort of hodgepodge roll that Japanese people love!
Makimono – Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun 1

What you will need:( Serves two to four people.)

freshly cooked rice
1 ½ cups
Vinegar
1 ½ tablespoons
Sugar
½ tablespoon
Salt
½ tsp

Optional Ingredients:

  • 1 slice of Salmon (fillings). (Canned Tuna works here too!)
  • 1 Onion (fillings)
  • 1 Avocado (fillings)
  • A few leaves of lettuce (fillings)
  • Mayonnaise, Mustard and Vinegar (for seasoning)
  • Black pepper (for seasoning)
  • Soy sauce (for seasoning)
  • 1 sheet of sushi nori (seaweed)

Makimono – Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun 3
[sourceLink url="http://cookpad.com/recipe/1676974" a_text="http://cookpad.com/"]

How to Cook It:

  1. 1

    Cook your rice.
  2. 2

As it cools, add in the first step ingredients of this recipe to make the sushi rice. Mix well.
  3. 3

Start preparing all your fillings. Slice the avocado, onion, and salmon into thin vertical slices. Be sure to rinse the onion once it is cut. Tear the lettuce into strips. Mix together the seasonings (to your liking).
  4. 4

Next, place some saran wrap/plastic wrap on the counter top and place a sheet of nori seaweed on top of it. (NOTE: If you have a bamboo sushi mat, this will make everything MUCH EASIER. If not, you still can make this no problem!)
  5. 5

Evenly place the rice on top of the nori (Note: leaving the rice an inch away from the top and bottom edges of the nori is best, so when you roll it up the seaweed can stick together).
  6. 6

Place your toppings on top part of the bed of rice lined up horizontally towards the bottom. Make sure that you leave about 1cm/ 1/2in of space from the bottom to the toppings on the rice.
  7. 7

    Roll up the nori gently!
  8. 8

Shape it if you need too. If some sticks out of one end, it’s okay! Just don’t cut that part too thin.
  9. 9

Cut them as thick or as thin as you want and you’re good to go!

(Note: You are dealing with potentially both seafood and meat. Be sure to wash your hands constantly! )

If you did everything right, it should come out looking something like this!

Here we are again at the end of this week’s “Eat Like Your Faves” article! How are you liking it so far? I have tried to be diverse in what I present to you, but please tell me if I’m forgetting something or if there is a recipe you want done! From cakes, to cookies, to pasta, Japanese food, and everything in between, I really hope you are enjoying this. I also want to know if you are trying to cook any of these! Please tell me and give me feedback! P.S. Keep your eyes peeled for a special set of articles coming your way dealing with New Year's festivities and foods! Till next time,

Yum!

Rihiko Sakurai (Amagami SS)

“…I got that boom boom that all the boys chase. And all the right junk in all the right places…” Chubby, chunky, fluffy, fat, marshmallow girls, whatever you want to call them. “Heavier” female anime characters don’t come along very often; much like in the rest of entertainment media (though that’s a whole different topic, so I won’t get into it here). And even if the characters sometimes are supposed to be on the chubby side, or overweight, the art doesn’t really reflect that, making the girls look just as slim as their counterparts. For example, Lucy in Fairy Tail is supposed to be on the heavy side, and so is Yomi from Azumanga Daioh, but you’d never know if it wasn’t mentioned (repeatedly) in the show. That being said, there are female characters with more curves than most, and while some of them are self-conscious about their weight and constantly struggling with it, there are plenty more who own it or just don't make a point of mentioning it or complaining about it. The bootylicious girls on this list are not all young or traditionally beautiful, but they are strong, talented, caring, confident, cute, sexy or a combination of these traits. And, of course, they are noticeably curvier than their co-stars. Chubby girls don’t get enough screen time in anime, so if you’re in search of cool chicks with some junk in their trunk, sit back and enjoy!

10. Chouchou Akimichi from Boruto: Naruto the Movie

[imageCharacterWithAnime character='Chouchou Akimichi Boruto Naruto the Movie' anime='Boruto']
[Information episodes=" Movie " aired=" August 2015 "]

Chouchou inherited her father Chouji’s appetite as well as his body type. She is also surprisingly fast and has a large amount of chakra which gives her an edge over other Genin that even Chouji didn’t have when he was her age. Unlike her father, Chouchou doesn’t care about being called out on her weight and is in fact a very self-confident girl. She tries to lose weight for a little while in her teen years (like many girls do) but realizing her genetic predisposition, she seems to let it go. While she can be a little self-centered at times, she is also independent and has decided to follow her own path and do things her own way. She's at spot number 10 because out of all the girls on the list, she's the only one to ever try to lose weight and feel unhappy with herself.

9. Minori Nakazawa from Nourin (No-Rin)

[imageCharacterWithAnime character='Minori Nakazawa No-Rin' anime='No-Rin dvd']
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" January 2014 – March 2014 "]

Minori is a sweet country girl who's in love with her childhood friend Kosaku. Unfortunately for her, a recently retired idol he worships, Yuka, just moved to their farmland and enrolled into their school. Despite obviously not having a petite idol-like physique, Minori still stays positive and continues to pursue her love interest. She even makes sure to flaunt her full breasts to Yuka often to remind her she's the winner in that department! Physically, Minori is obviously fuller than the other females in the show, she's kind of a voluptuous tomboy tsundere, and all she wants is to settle down Kosaku. She's kind, honest, caring, not to mention strong as she does farm work often. She's a healthy, curvy country girl who knows what she wants!

8. Satsuki Yotsuba from Negima!?

[imageCharacterWithAnime character='Satsuki Yotsuba Negima' anime='negima dvd']
[Information episodes=" 26 " aired=" October 2006 – March 2007 "]

Satsuki is an outstanding cook and even manages a restaurant. She’s a very hard worker and is the school’s dinning officer and is often praised for her cooking skills. Everybody likes her and she has the ability to break up fights between martial arts students. Her calm, positive personality and soft way of speaking makes the atmosphere calm and light whenever Satsuki’s around. Satsuki always dreamed of owning her own restaurant because she loves making people happy with her cooking. Being the motivated hard-worker she is, she eventually does end up opening branches of her restaurant in orbit!

7. Chieko from Kuragehime (Princess Jellyfish)

[imageCharacterWithAnime character='Chieko Kuragehime' anime='kuragehime dvd']
[Information episodes=" 11 " aired=" October 2010 – December 2010 "]

Chieko is an otaku, just like everybody else who lives at her mother's apartment building, which she manages, by the way. Her particular love is that of traditional Japanese clothes and dolls. In fact, she herself looks like a doll with her round face and since she is always seen in a kimono. Physically, she has the aforementioned chubby face, and is clearly of a thicker build than other girls in the show. Chieko is also mature and clever as not only does she manage the apartment building but she is able to stay calm in stressful situations and get what she wants. On top of all that, because of her interest in traditional clothes, she is also a gifted seamstress. My favorite part about Chieko is that in a show where everybody gets a makeover, Chieko is the only one to reject it. Why? She finds that she is stylish enough as she is! You go girl!

6. Pine-Pine from Space☆Dandy

[imageCharacterWithAnime character='Pine-Pine from Space Dandy' anime='Space Dandy dvd']
[Information episodes=" 13 " aired=" January 2014 – March 2014 "]

Pine-Pine is definitely a BBW. She's tall and has all the right junk in all the right places! Her face is chubby and her pink pouty lips are decorated by a beauty mark just to the side. Her plump physique makes her look provocative no matter if she's in her work clothes or out for a night on the town! She's so self-confident that when she takes her co-worker, Scarlet, out to a cocktail party to help her meet a man, Pine-Pine is the one who ends up getting hit on by all the guys. Dandy even refers to Scarlet as “not particularly attractive” even though at first glance she fits the stereotypical tall-skinny hot girl mold. Though it doesn't help that she's always kind of depressed and in a bad mood, unlike Pine-Pine who is not only confident but always cheerful and positive. Men can't resist a self-confident curvaceous woman!

5. Yuriko Gouda from Ore Monogatari!! (My Love Story!!)

[imageCharacterWithAnime character='Yuriko Gouda Ore Monogatari' anime='ore monogatari']
[Information episodes=" 24 " aired=" April 2015 – September 2015 "]

Yuriko is a 40 year old mother and housewife. As she puts it herself, she has the body (and stamina) of a 20 year-old. Stronger than even most men, she can work all day, carry all sorts of heavy things, cook amazing dinners, and care for her husband and son without batting an eyelash. She even continued her regular hard-working, heavy-lifting lifestyle during her pregnancy. She is also an amazing mother. Yuriko has raised Takeo to be an outstanding, respectful, kind and gentle man, traits which he’s clearly gotten from her, as she is always helping others and thinking of everybody before worrying about herself. In fact, when she was pregnant with Takeo, she carried another pregnant woman to the hospital!

4. Risley Law from Fairy Tail (2014)

[imageCharacterWithAnime character='fairy tail risley law' anime='dvd Fairy Tail']
[Information episodes=" 261+ " aired=" April 2014 – Present "]

Risley is a member of the Mermaid Heel guild. She is naturally quite plump and she owns it, wearing a bandeau top and low-rise skirt with side slits showing off just as much skin as the skinnier girls in the show. She is also very determined and confident in her abilities. Her magic powers can change the effects of gravity around her, her opponents and herself. This allows her to move along walls, jump high and even change her body size, sometimes becoming slim when she uses her powers. However, she prefers her natural, curvier size and shape and is seen in that state most of the time. She also warns her opponents “no to underestimate the chubby”! And she sure isn’t one to be underestimated!

3. Kamado Ueshita from Mirai Nikki (Future Diary)

[imageCharacterWithAnime character='Kamado Ueshita Mirai Nikki' anime='mirai nikki (future diary) wallpaper 01']
[Information episodes=" 26 " aired=" October 2011 – April 2012 "]

Our list continues with another motherly figure, Ueshita Kamado who runs an orphanage and has been doing so for 14 years. She’s very caring and loves all children. She’s become involved in a life-or-death game as one of the owners of future-telling phone-diaries who must kill each other off in order to become the new God of time. Being the kind, gentle, pacifistic woman she is, she isn’t interested in being a God, and only wants to win so she can make the world a better place for children. Her sweet, round face and soft plump body make you just want to hug her and have her bake you cookies! All her children love her to death and though she won’t fight in the situation she is in, her kids will do anything to protect her.

2. Super Sonico from SoniAni: Super Sonico the Animation

[imageCharacterWithAnime character='Super Sonico SoniAni Super Sonico the Animation' anime='soniani super sonico animation dvd']
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" January 2014 – March 2014 "]

While Sonico is made to fulfill all kinds of fan service, she's not your typical big-breasted anime cutie. Unlike most other well-endowed anime heroines, she has thick thighs, a bit of a belly and a thicker body overall. Not only that but she's usually spilling out of her (sometimes barely-there) clothes and is often seen with a bit of a muffin top or skin folds when she sits or gets in certain positions. Sonico really has more of a realistic body type of what a voluptuous sexy college girl would look like. And to top it all of, she's also a model, works at her grandmother's bar and a musician in a band! And while she's gorgeous, curvy, talented, and busy she's still a down-to-earth, somewhat clumsy, sweet girl. I'll be honest, the first time I ever saw a Sonico figure, I was very surprised and loved the fact that she had a very realistic body type. That's why, even though she was only a mascot for Nitroplus at the time, she became and still is one of my favorite characters!

1. Kazami Torino from Valkyrie Drive: Mermaid

[imageCharacterWithAnime character='130621' anime='Valkyrie Drive Mermaid DVD']
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" October 2015 – December 2015 "]

It's starting to seem like a lot of chubby girls in anime are either motherly or sensual. Well, here's a girl that has the best of both worlds! Kazami Torino is a sweet, smart, generous and kind voluptuous woman who takes in girls who don't want to battle or have nowhere else to go on Mermaid Island. She really is like a mother to all the girls in the village and everybody loves her for it. Physically speaking, she is more than well endowed in the cleavage department and you can usually see where her clothes naturally dig into her hips, belly and breasts. And when you see her in a bikini (or less!) I'm sure you'd agree she's the most adorable plump MILF you've ever seen. And that's how she got to number 1 on our list!

Conclusion

Well, there you have it! There are some other girls in anime that are meant to be chubby or fat but for the most part you can't tell and in a lot of cases even if it is noticeable, the girls are usually self-conscious of their weight and constantly trying to lose it. The girls in this list were selected because they aren't ashamed of their body, are confident, successful, kind or smart, but most importantly, their weight doesn't play a big role in who they are. In fact, the majority of these girls never bring up their weight at all or try to change their appearance, they are who they are, they love it and own it! A special mention goes out for Real Drive. All the females in this anime have pretty realistic, curvy body shapes. And it's by Masamune Shirow and Production I.G! Believe it or not, some people didn't like it because of the chubbyness... What do you think? Do you agree with our picks? Do you think there should be more realistic bodies in anime? You like marshmallow girls? Let us know in the comments below! I hope you enjoyed the countdown! Till next time! “Fat bottomed girls you make the anime world go round...” Nya~!

no game no life wallpaper

NEET, Hikikomori, YD. If you watch any amount of anime, you are bound to have run into at least one or two of these terms. Actually, NEET and Hikikomori have been around for quite some time now. And while some people may think that these terms are interchangeable or that the people they describe are pretty much the same, the truth is they are different. Though one could be classified as two or more of them at the same time. While YD originated from a recent anime, Dempa Kyoushi, NEET and Hikikomori are both real terms that have been in use for over a decade and are actually considered as an important social issue. Because of its use in the series, though, I believe the term YD may actually pick up. All of these terms and the people they describe are clear manifestations of our modern society and the direction in which human psychology and human interactions are heading. So to get things started let’s find out…

[ad_top2 class="mt40"]

What Does It Mean?

Punch Line Picture 1

NEET: (Oxford Dictionary) British. A young person who is no longer in the education system and who is not working or being trained for work. Acronym of Not in Education, Employment, or Training. Origin: Early 21st century. It is important to note that NEETs are young people usually under the age of 30 and are officially not involved in any of the aforementioned occupations. The reasons can be anything from laziness, a bad economy or job market or they are recent graduates. They usually live off of welfare programs, unemployment check or allowances from their parents. This last one is most common in Japan. Eikichi Onizuka from Great Teacher Onizuka is technically a NEET before deciding to be a teacher. A punk, but still a NEET. Hikikomori: (Oxford Dictionary) In Japan, the abnormal avoidance of social contact, typically by adolescent males. A person who avoids social contact. Origin: Japanese. Literally meaning “staying indoors, (social) withdrawal”. There are almost 1 million hikikomori in Japan between the ages of 20 and 40. Unlike NEETs, Hikikomori started as a definition for socially withdrawn young people about 20 years ago in Japan. However, this first generation of Hikikomori continues to live in isolation and is now in their 40s. Hikikomori are people who refuse to leave their house for more than 6 months. They tend to live with their parents who cover their expenses or if they live on their own, they also receive some sort of allowance from their family. However, the definition of Hikikomori does not include a lack of employment. And with the existence of online work, they could very well make a living on their own. Hakua Shiodome from Shomin Sample is most definitely a hikikomori. Isolating herself from everybody but still working and studying, until Kimito comes along. YD: (Denpa Kyoushi / Ultimate Otaku Teacher manga and anime) Abbreviated form of the Japanese phrase “Yaritai koto shika Dekinai” or “only Able to Do what he Wants” (ADW) in English. It is a self-diagnosed condition the main character Junichirou Kagami claims to suffer from which only allows him to do what he wants to do. In the anime, when put in situations where he must do something he doesn’t want to do, he makes sure to add something into the mix that he desires to do, is interested in or simply, will entertain him. Another example of a YD character would be Luffy from One Piece. He only does what he wants, but then again, he is a pirate. He hand-picks his crew members, eats what he wants, goes where he wants and chases whatever dream he wishes. As he states at one point, his ideal of being Pirate King is not to be important, but to be free. That sounds pretty YD to me! So now that we have the definitions down, let’s break apart the differences.

Ultimate Otaku Teacher Picture 2

To Work or Not to Work?t

This is the question. While NEETs by definition have no job, hikikomori usually go to school and / or work until their social anxiety gets the best of them or something happens which makes them decide to become reclusive. However, with the way the world works nowadays, with so many online job opportunities, hikikomori can fulfill their need for privacy and avoid human interaction without having to sacrifice financial independence. As such this is one main difference between the two. However, not every hikikomori will have the motivation to find a job, so there is quite an overlap between NEETs and hikikomori, more so in Japan where parents are more likely to keep sustaining their children well into adulthood. Himawari Shinomiya from Vivid Red Operation, for example, is a hikikomori who is not a NEET. After a certain event takes place at school, she becomes a shut-in and avoids contact with the outside as much as possible. However, she’s still a student at her school, though she takes classes via a binocular camera she constructed. As for NEETs, they’re everywhere in anime. Hazegawa Taizou from Gintama becomes a NEET (or MADAO in the show) after he loses his government position. He has no job but he is out and about, so definitely not a hikikomori. And of course, Junichiro Kagami, from Denpa Kyoushi is a NEET at the beginning, as well as YD. As far as YDs working, well, it would really depend on whether they want to work or if the job they’re doing is something they want to do. Some YDs that come to mind are, of course, Junichiro Kagami and Haruhi Suzumiya from The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. Junichiro was originally a YD NEET. Once his sister gets him the teaching job, he ceases to be a NEET by definition but stays true to his YD self by always making it so that there is something he wants to experience or get from any lesson he has to teach. And when he was a NEET, he wouldn’t be considered a hikikomori since he doesn’t seem to have trouble interacting with others, went out to buy manga and such, and is in fact, pretty self-confident. The other YD, Haruhi Suzumiya, still goes to school like she’s supposed to but she really only does what she wants to! The fact that she even attends school means she wants to attend. She starts her own club, comes up with activities and makes her club members do as she says. Thus also proving that YDs can also work / go to school as long as there is something they want involved.

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya dvd

Social Interactions

As mentioned before, this is another major difference, at least between NEETs and hikikomori. NEETs can be social and spend time outside their home, but hikikomori are by definition reclusive. Hikikomori usually decide to shut themselves away from society after an occurrence that affects them in a social setting. This can be a humiliating moment, a frightening experience, or simply a small social phobia that grows worse and worse over time. They sometimes spend time outside of their home, but this usually makes them uncomfortable. Depending on the degree of their anxiety, misanthropy or anthropophobia, they can range from being quiet and isolated students to completely disappearing from school. A good example of a hikikomori is Ito Hikiotani from Punch Line. She used to go to school until a traumatizing bully experience led her to drop out of school and avoid human interaction as much as possible. Once at the Korai House, she rarely leaves her room and she has no job so she is also a NEET. In fact, Ito’s name (read in Japanese Hikiotani Ito) is actually a play on the words Hikikomori, otaku and niito (NEET). Sora and Shiro from No Game No Life are two more hikikomori who cut their ties to society when they lose their parents. And while Yuuko Shionji from Kami-sama no Memo-chou is referred to as a NEET Detective, she’s really more of a hikikomori since she does all her investigating from her laptop in her room by herself, but technically she isn’t unemployed as she is a detective. YDs will basically be social whenever and with whomever they want at any given time. Our aforementioned Haruhi Suzumiya hand-picks her club members / friends and the times they interact. Luffy also chooses his friends / crew members and, much like Haruhi, makes them join him. And as for those he doesn’t want to socialize with, he just walks away or blatantly ignores them.

No Game, No Life Picture 4

But, Why?

In the real world, the reasons why people may become NEETs or hikikomori are usually modern social issues. While some NEETs end up in that role because of a layoff or a failed university entrance exam (the latter most common in Japan). Some choose to join the NEET population because they don’t agree with the social mold they are expected to fit into. Onizuka from GTO is an example of this, as well as Ryota Sakamoto from Btooom! and most NEETs in Eden of the East. Especially in Japan, more and more young people refuse to fall into the salaryman role and join the rest of the suits working 10+ hours a day. This leads them to avoid continuing their education or searching for work. However, Japan isn’t the only country with a high population of NEETs, it’s simply more noticeable as doing something that’s out of the norm is not as accepted there as it is in countries like the UK, Canada, Ireland or the USA, which have similar NEET percentages (12-16% of young people). While hikikomori exist in some number in other societies, the term was coined in Japan because this type of person is found in high numbers there. Over 700,000 in 2010, in fact. Hikikomori aren’t reclusive from the beginning; they usually withdraw from society gradually, though they are commonly shy and insecure to begin with or naturally feel a certain level of anxiety. This is a serious pathology that can eventually be linked to depression and other serious issues. The reasons for this anxiety or discontent, which later lead to social withdrawal, can be many. One is social pressure that becomes too demanding, including pressure to enter a university, to be in a school club, or the pressure of being bullied like Ito’s case in Punch Line or Akira Renbokoji from Kakumeiki Valvrave. Both of these characters are forced into hiding by the social anxiety caused by bullying.

Valvrave the Liberator Picture 6

Another reason is that in Japan there are countless social norms, rules and expectations which, until recently, were followed by everybody without question. Nobody really wanted to stand out and / or be different. However, more and more people have discovered individuality and while there are those who embrace it, let their unique flag fly and don’t care about what others think, some dislike being judged and feel they don’t agree with the way Japanese society works, so they decide to retract from it. Itami’s wife, Risa from GATE, for example is a doujinshi artist and a major otaku so she lives as a hikikomori, as neither of her interests are very socially acceptable in Japan. As for YD, this seems to be a very real thing. It just hasn’t been given a name until now. And, I believe it is most prevalent among millennials, and now, their children. A YD personality like Junichiro’s, Haruhi’s or Luffy’s is all about just doing what you want and not really caring about others’ expectations of you or what people think of you. This is a mentality that has grown and spread over the last decade or so and it makes some people uncomfortable. This is often shown in anime when the aforementioned characters are criticized for being so free-spirited.

In Conclusion

The main differences are: 1. hikikomori are always reclusive but could have a job. 2. NEETs don’t have a job or go to school and may be sociable or antisocial. 3. YDs do whatever they very well please, work-wise, socially or otherwise. 4. One can be both a hikikomori and a NEET at the same time. 5. One can also be a NEET and YD at the same time. 6. Not sure whether a hikikomori can be YD, since this is the most pathological of the conditions. I suppose if the reason to withdraw isn't negative, and is truly what all they desire, they could be YD too.

Kamisama no Memochou

Some see the YD way of life as irresponsible and selfish, but those who follow it are most likely happier than those who do things they don’t want to simply because “they have to” or because society dictates it. Young entrepreneurs, successful YouTubers, parents who home-school and permaculturers are just some examples of real-world YDs. They make their own path without following the rules and expectations of society. They follow their dreams, they do what they want. However, I also believe the NEET phenomenon is a side-effect of this YD “condition” as Junichiro calls it. The NEETs who stay as such by choice, also do what they want. They don’t want to do what they’re expected to, they wish to be free, play video games, loaf around, or what-have-you (not everyone wants to start a business!). While this seems lazy, they are simply pursuing their own happiness. So in a way, some NEETs are also YDs! And lastly, if hikikomori were able to embrace the YD lifestyle, they would likely be able to leave their homes and be a part of society. However, this depends mostly on the society that made them withdraw in the first place. Hopefully Japan will open up more and more to the idea of individuality and allow people to be who they want to be without making them feel like they don’t want to be a part of that society anymore. Are you a NEET? A hikikomori? YD? Do you know any people like this? If you had to be one, which one would you choose? Please share your thoughts in the comments! Nya~!
