Dreaming of following in the footsteps of his father Gorou to become a professional baseball player, he begins to play baseball on the youth baseball team, Mitsufune Dolphins. Now, spring has arrived and with it, Daigo has moved up to the sixth grade. Then, right before his eyes, a student transfers into his class after coming back from living in The States. This transfer student’s name is Hikaru Satou. As fate would have it, his father was Gorou’s sworn friend and former major leaguer, Toshiya Satou… Now, the fate of these two boys begins to move!

Some of us might remember our childhood with nostalgia. Free from most of the worries in the world, maybe we were able to enjoy nature closer, as well as our hobbies without caring about the time. In those days, we would meet dear friends who probably are not with us anymore. Omoide no Marnie is a classic by Studio Ghibli which captures the joy of those days. Like other movies by this studio, it also highlights childhood and the conflicts of growing up. However, Omoide no Marnie also has place for mystery. What other anime movies capture friendship and memories in such an endearing and dramatic way like Omoide no Marnie? Let’s see if we can find out...

[ad_top2 class="mt40"]

Similar Anime to Omoide no Marnie / Similar Anime to When Marnie was There

1. Hana to Alice: Satsujin Jiken (The Case of Hana and Alice)

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="PCXP-50323" text="" url="" ]
[en][information_general item1 = "Episodes" content1="1" item2="Aired" content2="Feb 20, 2015" ][/en]

What would you think or do if you heard a rumor about a murder in your new Middle School? When Tetsuko “Alice” Arisugawa hears it for the first time, she decides to investigate it, discovering that Hana, a girl from her class, might have the clue to solving the mystery. However, she lives in the Flower House everyone is scared to go inside. With a combination of cinematographic animation and watercolor based backgrounds, this movie will capture your attention from the very first scene. Omoide no Marnie and Hana to Alice put the girls in charge. There is a mystery in both films and they spiral towards drama, although this is not evident at the beginning. However, these two movies know how to balance the blues with lighthearted scenes and appreciation for the daily life. The pace is also slow but comfortable, and the music helps make the movement fluid. If you enjoyed Omoide no Marnie but would like a little bit more grown up version of it, look no more! Watch Hana to Alice.

2. Momo e no Tegami (A Letter to Momo)

[sourceLink asin="B00I81K148" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]

Momo Miyaura is an 11 year girl who leaves Tokyo after the death of her father. She moves to a remote island in Seto Inland Sea with her mother, accompanied by the last unfinished letter her father left for her. As a former city resident, Momo has trouble fitting in on the island, but what happens when she finds an old book about youkai in the attic of her new home? Perhaps the magic that Momo so desperately needs in her life will become real… Omoide no Marnie and Momo e no Tegami start in a pretty similar way, with the protagonists moving to a more tranquil neighborhood. They also encounter old houses and objects, followed by a bit of… could we call it magic? Momo and Anna are also well rounded, realistic girls, with natural reactions. Their adventures are full of sentiment and are relatable. And did we mention the scenic scenes in both movies? If you were looking for quality in animation and storytelling, Momo e no Tegami might be the option for you.

3. Coquelicot-zaka kara (From Up on Poppy Hill)

[sourceLink asin="B00CSYR432" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]
[en][information_general item1 = "Episodes" content1="1" item2="Aired" content2="Jul 16, 2011" ][/en]
[es][information_general item1 = "Episodios" content1="___content1___" item2="Emisión" content2="___content2___" post_id=""][/es]

We invite you to enter Coquelicot manor, a boarding house on the top of a hill, ran by the Matsuzaki family. Umi is on charge in this place, but when she is not there, you can find her in the local high school. This is the time before the Olympic Games of the sixties, and in order to prevent the demolition of an old building, the students are gathering together. This is how Umi meets Shun Kazama and falls in love with him. There is a little problem though, and that is that there are mysteries related to Shun’s origins. Therefore, the couple teams up to find out about his past. Omoide no Marnie and Coquelicot zaka kara are marked with nostalgia. Also, we see young people involved in mysteries that they try to solve by themselves. The struggles of growing up are also present. However, we should warn you that the drama in Coquelicot gets heavy. The ends of both films are also similar, but we can not tell you exactly how because we would ruin the surprises. Better watch them and find out yourselves ;)

Warning: this movie has references to suicide. Proceed with caution. What would you do if you had another opportunity to fix your mistakes once you have died? A guy who falls out of the cycle of reincarnation gets such a chance due to a lottery (he, he). His spirit possesses a 14 year old boy called Makoto Kobayashi and starts on a journey to understand humanity better. While he collects the memories of Makoto, he realizes how reality sometimes gets in the way to create real connections with others. Did someone say drama? Omoide no Marnie and Colorful have an atmosphere that invite you to observe, absorb and reflect about real issues in life. They are uplifting, hopeful and sad at the same time. They also play with a dreamlike state, and their art fits masterfully with their stories. If you like more mature themed anime that draw you into their plots without losing the freshness of innocence and youth, these two movies are up to the game.

5. Sennen Joyuu (Millennium Actress)

[sourceLink asin="B00KGYV8L0" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]
[en][information_general item1 = "Episodes" content1="1" item2="Aired" content2="Sep 14, 2002" ][/en]
[es][information_general item1 = "Episodios" content1="___content1___" item2="Emisión" content2="___content2___" post_id=""][/es]

This is the story behind the great star behind the Ginei Studio, which is soon to be demolished. An ex employee finds the famous Chiyoko Fujiwara and asks her to tell her life story for a documentary. Inspired by the real actresses of the Showa Period, this movie narrates the story of Japanese cinema through Chiyoko, and how it highlighted the joys, sorrows and aspirations of a nation devastated by the Second World War. Thousands of years are condensed into a moving story of impossible love the actress lived. Omoide no Marnie is not a conventional movie, as it tells the story of one of the characters in a unique way, in a somewhat similar fashion to Sennen Joyuu. These characters are so charismatic and important to the plot, that the others gravitate around them, pretty much like the viewers themselves. The point of view is mostly feminine in both films. Did we mention that the atmosphere is also full of drama? The main difference is that Sennen Joyuu talks about love birds, while Omoide no Marnie is more about friendship between two girls.

6. Koe no Katachi (A Silent Voice)

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="PCXE-50747" text="" url="" ]
[en][information_general item1 = "Episodes" content1="1" item2="Aired" content2="Sep 17, 2016" ][/en]
[es][information_general item1 = "Episodios" content1="___content1___" item2="Emisión" content2="___content2___" post_id=""][/es]

Warning: this movie also has references to suicide. Proceed with caution. Bullies can be found everywhere, and they tend to pick on the most different among us. That is why it was not surprising when a deaf girl named Shouko Nishimiya is bullied by Shouya Ishida and others as soon as she transfers to their school. However, Shouya is blamed for the bullying and pays the price, becoming isolated throughout elementary and middle school. As our protagonist grows up, he feels so conflicted that he attempts suicide. Fortunately, he decides to find Shouko to fix his wrong doings instead. And that is only the beginning of this wonderful movie! Memories can be as harmful as poison or a window to the future in Omoide no Marnie and in Koe no Katachi. Some characters actively seek them, while others hide them or forget them. Regrets are also present, but Marnie and Shouya leave us with a sensation of hope. Both movies show us how the bonds between youngsters can be magical, building up to great codas.

Final Thoughts

Whether you have great memories of your childhood or not, Omoide no Marnie and other similar anime movies invite us to immerse ourselves in the lives of other young people around the world and in different times. Memories are truly alive in these films! Throughout the protagonists adventures, we get a glimpse on their troubled lives and how they struggle to come on top of them. Above everything else, these movies remind us that we are never alone, and that we can always get second chances in life if we seek them enough. Have you had any encounter with a special Marnie in your life? Which other movie like Omoide no Marnie have you watched? Don’t forget that we are open to all your comments and suggestions. Tokyo Big Site is very easily accessible on the JR Rinkai Line, and you can get there in less than 30 minutes from Shibuya and Shinjuku.

"Those who create anime" "Those who spread it" "Those who enjoy it" And "Those who seek to create and spread it one day” It is the connection of “everyone" who are involved in the world of anime that drives the 100th anniversary as well as the future to even greater lengths. In order to reach out to our audiences with the power we are given from them, us creators will commit ourselves to more than ever before. -AnimeJapan Organization (taken from the AnimeJapan official English website - https://www.anime-japan.jp/en/about/outline/)

What to Expect

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]

AnimeJapan is swiftly becoming one of Japan’s biggest and well-known anime events. While many events are run by fans, for fans, AnimeJapan is all official. The booths and exhibitors are all companies directly involved in the anime industry and process in various ways. The guests are big names in anime as well. But rather than being an event limited only to business and press, it’s all open to the public! That means anime fans can have easy access to a lot of official news and goods, and even have a chance to see some of their favourite creators. The biggest point behind AnimeJapan is getting people excited for the next year of anime. All of the major studios are pushing their newest works with posters, trailers, and even free stuff if you’re lucky. You will see some things for older and popular anime as well, especially when studios are celebrating their past works, too, but most of the focus is on new and upcoming anime. If you’re looking to just see anime you already know and love, AnimeJapan isn’t the best venue. But if you want to get ready for all new characters and stories, AnimeJapan can get you hyped!

As expected, AnimeJapan can get very crowded. Popular big name studio booths and events with famous names will always draw a lot of people, and some limited areas like the cosplay changing room are likely to have queues. It pays to be patient and give yourself an entire afternoon to enjoy the event so you don’t have to feel rushed if you need to queue for something. It’s also a great idea to get your ticket in advance from a store like Animate or a convenience store because you’ll have to queue to enter anyway. If you can skip the long queues to buy a ticket on the day as well, you’re already saving yourself a lot of time. Plus advanced tickets are a little bit cheaper! AnimeJapan can be an overwhelming experience for the senses, to be prepared for a barrage of sound, music, people, and screens. Luckily, if you need to take a break, Tokyo Big Site has a few restaurants, convenience stores, and cafes you can access. AnimeJapan will let you leave and reenter with a hand stamp, so just don’t forget to get one if you decide to take a break! This year in the internal food court area, there was also a free phone charging station. It was a nice addition to keep fans with full batteries to take pictures and meet up with their friends - and of course, promote the event on social media!

What to Bring in Order to Enjoy the Event

*A camera

You can take pictures of almost everything you see at AnimeJapan! And you’re definitely going to want to. Some of the events on the main stages or smaller panels do not allow photography, but they will all be clearly marked as such if this is the case. Most other things, especially big displays for new anime or professional cosplayers working at the industry booths encourage photography. There were even a few photo ops places for you to pose and have your picture taken, such as sitting in Levi’s chair from Shingeki no Kyojin or holding props from Cardcaptor Sakura. Plus, there are so many amazing cosplayers around, and there’s no better way to show your support and appreciation for their work than to ask to take their photo. Just remember to always ask first when it’s other attendees you want to photograph!

*Money

AnimeJapan’s events (aside from cosplaying) are all included in the admission price. But you’re definitely going to want to bring some extra money along with you. A lot of the booths sell exclusive merchandise, some of which can only be purchased at AnimeJapan! You can find everything from tiny keychains to t-shirts, phone cases to wall scrolls, and much more. Everything is an average price for anime merchandise in Japan, too, so you won’t feel bad buying something from your favourite show. There’s also a food court with plenty of delicious selections at slightly above average prices, and if you’re planning to stay all day you’ll definitely be taking advantage of that. Finally, cosplayers need to remember to bring ¥1000 extra to use the changing room and baggage storage!

What to Do While There/What is Available

There’s plenty to do at AnimeJapan to keep you busy all day. There are two massive halls in Tokyo Big Site that are packed with official industry booths, as well as four huge stages hosting special performances throughout the event. There is a large cosplay area, a food court, and even a place for kids to enjoy. But let’s back up and look at each of these things to do in a bit more detail. First, let’s start with the official industry booths because they dominate AnimeJapan. All of the biggest names in anime set up huge displays for fans to come and check out. They feature a lot of different things to see depending on the company. Some have professional cosplayers or photo opportunities. Others have original artwork or sketches from old and new anime alike. And some even have figures or props like weapons and costumes that really bring the anime to life! The biggest names like Aniplex, Square Enix, Pony Canyon and more have displays big enough to walk through to showcase their anime both old and new. And you can take pictures of almost everything!

As can be expected, almost all the industry booths have a TV (or three) that is playing previews for upcoming anime and live action films. These are usually running on a loop of about ten or fifteen minutes, so it’s easy to watch all of them and then move onto the next booth. This is one of the best ways to get a first look at new anime and upcoming sequels. Along with huge posters and new merchandise announcements, this really helps fans get hyped for each studio’s upcoming projects. A few of the booths even have small stages where they host panels and performances throughout the day with voice actors, writers, and more that are free to attend! These are all in Japanese though as a necessary warning to non-Japanese speakers. Throughout the entire event, AnimeJapan has four massive stages that host big events. These include some music performances, and mostly talks with big names from the anime industry. From hugely popular voice actors to famous writers, artists, and directors, it’s a chance for fans to see the people behind their favourite anime in person. These stages are very crowded and extremely popular parts of AnimeJapan though, so if you want to attend one of it’s best to queue up early. Some stages even require entry into a lottery or advanced registration, so decide early (before you even go) if you want to try to see one. Each day of AnimeJapan also features different things on these stages, so it’s best to plan what day you go based on what you want to see. Most of these events prohibit photography.

Like any anime event, AnimeJapan has a huge cosplay zone! There’s space to change and leave bags for cosplayers, and then a large area for them to take a lot of pictures. There are a lot of amazing cosplayers at AnimeJapan cosplaying from a wide variety of anime and games. Whether you’re a cosplayer yourself, a photographer, or just a fan who wants to see the talent these people have on display, be sure you don’t miss the cosplay area. More details about cosplay at AnimeJapan are in the Cosplay section of this article. The cosplay area is in a separate hall from the main events, but it’s in the same area as something else very important - the food court! AnimeJapan has a big indoor space featuring several different foods and drinks trucks. It also has a lot of tables (standing only so don’t expect chairs here) to enjoy either the food you buy or a snack from home to recharge. In 2018, there were several different Japanese food trucks to choose from, as well as a famous bubble tea stand. Most excitingly though was the themed food area. Some of the biggest anime of the year like Osomatsu-san and FATE had dishes that were based on them available for around ¥1000 each (just under $10) - and they came with a collectible coaster, too! The queues for these foods was a bit longer but definitely worth it for fans of the anime.

Finally, AnimeJapan has a special section just made for kids! It has a lot of fun things for younger fans to enjoy with their parents, such as play areas and bouncy castles. It even has its own stage that has shows based on anime like Yokai Watch or Precure that are aimed at young anime fans. It’s a nice addition to both kids that like anime or parents that want to see the rest of the event but still want to give their child somewhere to unwind and have fun, too. As a note to older fans, you do need to have a kid to enter this area. We know it looks super fun but please save it for the families!

Cosplay

In the past five years of AnimeJapan, cosplay has become more and more popular. From just a small area the first year to the three massive spaces this time, it’s clear that cosplay is on the rise at the event. AnimeJapan has been catering more and more to cosplayers by creating more effective changing rooms, dedicating event space, and creating a good atmosphere for cosplayers to spend time together and take pictures. And it only seems to continue to get better every year! Cosplaying is an additional cost of ¥1000 at AnimeJapan, but that fee gets you access to the changing area as well as baggage storage. The changing rooms are all inside and on clean concrete flooring and feel very private despite being in the middle of the bustling event. That being said, you are going to be in a big space changing with people of your own gender, but it feels separated from the general event populace at least! The men’s and women’s changing spaces are right next to one another as well, so you don’t have to go far to find a friend of the opposite gender once you’re both changed.

When you finish getting ready, simply stick the sticker saying that you paid the fee anywhere visible on your cosplay (even the back is okay so it’s not in your photos!), drop your bags off at the organised storage area, and you’re ready for play! At AnimeJapan 2018, the area appropriately named “Cosplayers’ World” consisted of a big indoor area that connected two outdoor spaces. One was the usual cosplay space at AnimeJapan, which is a small section of the parking lot. The other new outdoor area actually featured a background of Tokyo Bay and Haneda Airport, and was much bigger! Of course, it was crowded, but it made for a better backdrop for pictures and an additional space for people to use. A simple but nice feature of Cosplayers’ World at AnimeJapan was a section inside that had backdrops with the AnimeJapan logo. Cosplayers queued up to take pictures in front of these official backgrounds to post on social media and show everyone where they were. It was a nice touch that cosplayers were happy to take advantage of and take some cool souvenir photos with to remember their time at AnimeJapan. Cosplay isn’t limited to the cosplay area though! Cosplayers are free to walk around and enjoy the entire event of AnimeJapan. Photography isn’t prohibited in the rest of the event space, but stopping the flow of traffic and taking up a lot of space is discouraged. So for taking a lot of pictures, it’s best to use the cosplay zone. But don’t think you’re limited to only being in that area; be sure to enjoy the rest of the event, too.

Final Thoughts

AnimeJapan has grown so much as an event in the past five years, and all for the better. Its programming continues to increase, as well as space and time management of the staff and event itself. In fact, the final visitor count for AnimeJapan 2018 was 152,331 attendees! So it’s still popular and in Tokyo, which means it’s more crowded than an average event. But AnimeJapan saw a smooth schedule with enough space for people to breathe and enjoy themselves, and a chance to actually experience the programming they wanted to see. For anime fans that want to be on the cusp of the industry, learning everything first and seeing all the newest trailers on the big screen, AnimeJapan is unmissable. To see both professional and amateur cosplayers bringing their best and having fun, AnimeJapan is a destination. And to be surrounded by otaku culture by attending the event that is becoming the heart of the industry itself, run by professionals for fans, well. You guessed it - you’ve got to check out AnimeJapan. We have high hopes that next year will bring an even bigger and better event than ever before! Did you attend AnimeJapan this year or in the past? What did you think about it? Would you like to attend someday? Do you have any questions about the event? What would you like to see if you had the chance to go? Leave your comments below!

Kimihiro Watanuki only knew a life living alone pestered by youkai. When he enters a curious shop and meets its owner, his life turns upside down. However, the shop owner (the legendary witch of dimensions known as Yuuko Ichihara) has secrets of her own that could affect the entire multiverse. As she and Watanuki meet several shop clients, many stories interweave. Who has not heard of CLAMP at this point? Although they have been the mothers of many highly successful stories, xxxHolic was one of their latest stars. Together with its twin sister (Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles), these stories told us the many woes of Watanuki and his comrades as they discover who they are and try to stop the multiverse from collapsing… while they run a shop that can grant you any wish if you are willing to pay the price. Mysterious and sometimes cruel, xxxHolic made its mark on a generation. What other manga deal with magic, youkai or the price you have to pay for your dreams? Let’s see if we can find out!

Similar Manga to xxxHolic

1. Youkai no Oishasan (Youkai Doctor)

[en][information_general item1 = "Authors" content1="Yuuki Satou" item2="Genres" content2="Supernatural" item3 = "Volumes" content3="15" item4="Published" content4="Feb 28, 2007 to Feb 19, 2011" ][/en]

Yuuki Satou worked as assistant before drawing their own stories, which range from shounen to shoujo. In Youkai no Oishasan, we can meet so many youkai! Kotoko’s family is in charge of exorcising them, but when she meets Kuro, she discovers that youkai have doctors. Therefore, she decides to learn the craft. Did anyone call Watanuki to this story? The relationship between Kotoko and Kuro reminds us of him and Yuuko. The misconceptions Kotoko had about youkai also are similar to Watanuki’s wanting to get rid of his abilities at the beginning of xxxHolic. The atmosphere with its heavy orientalism is also enticing. The main difference is that Youkai no Oishasan is a lighter manga. If you miss Yuuko and cute youkai, this could be a good option for you.

2. Rurimiya Mugen Kobutsuten (Rurimiya’s Curious Antique Shop)

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="NEOBK-1736340" text="" url="" ]

Maybe you are not a fan of Watanuki as much as you are of Yuuko. Perhaps you wonder how were her younger days, or when she ran the shop without so many people and Mokonas around her. In that case, maybe you could try to visit Rurimiya. Created by Makoto Sunahara, this is only one very few titles she has released. Rurimiya Mugen Kobutsuten tells us the story of Rurimiya. who manages a shop in a quiet alley. Whoever enters can have a wish granted, receiving an antique from the shop. However, they have to be very careful or terrible things could happen. It is true that xxxHolic and Rurimiya did not create the mysterious shop genre. However, they have such an elegant way of delivering their stories that it captures you immediately. One also has the sensation that the chapters are part of something bigger. And did we mention that both shop owners have strong personalities and know how to get serious when it is required?

3. Chocolat no Mahou (The Magic of Chocolat)

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="NEOBK-1844048" text="" url="" ]
[en][information_general item1 = "Authors" content1="Mizuho Rino" item2="Genres" content2="Drama, Horror, Magic, Shoujo, Supernatural" item3 = "Volumes" content3="15" item4="Published" content4="2009 to Present" ][/en]

We all know that Yuuko is a fan of delicious food and alcohol. So, what would have happened if instead of running her shop with curious artifacts, she would have made chocolates instead? This is the case of Chocolat Aikawa, an expert chocolatiere who has her own shop, called Chocolat Noir. The best part is that she can also grant wishes for a price. Mizuho Riho only has another story called Takoyaki Princess, so it is interesting to know that Chocolat no Mahou made it big. It even has its own OVA! Chocolat has a great style when it comes to clothing and decoration, just like Yuuko. She also has a black pet, a cute talking cat! Both protagonists can also affect the lives of their clients in great ways. This is another manga for those who really miss the Witch of Dimensions.

4. Usemono Yado

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="4091364160" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]
[en][information_general item1 = "Authors" content1="Hozumi" item2="Genres" content2="Drama, Shoujo" item3 = "Volumes" content3="3" item4="Published" content4="Mar 27, 2014 to Oct 28, 2015" ][/en]

Hozumi has a few manga with a heavy slice of life influence. A traditional style inn in Japan might be the perfect place to rest for a while, reflect about your deeds or just take refuge from the outside world. However, the inn in Usemono Yado has the peculiarity of being able to show people what they have lost. After that, they can either go back to their normal lives, or keep the thing… which has consequences, of course. If you want a tour of such an inn, the peculiar landlady will take you there. If what you miss about xxxHolic is the Japanese atmosphere or the house where Watanuki and company lived, Usemono Yado presents us with something similar. Both Yuuko and the landlady are not what they appear as at first sight. Also, the structure of the story looks like short self conclusive chapters at first, but there is a more important parallel story behind that connects everything. Hozumi is also praised for the quality of their art. All in all, Usemono Yado is an underrated jewel in the supernatural manga realm.

5. Crimson Spell

[sourceLink asin="1421564211" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]
[en][information_general item1 = "Authors" content1="Ayano Yamane" item2="Genres" content2="Action, Adventure, Demons, Drama, Fantasy, Magic, Romance, Yaoi" item3 = "Volumes" content3="5" item4="Published" content4="May 22, 2004 to present" ][/en]
[es][information_general item1 = "Mangaka" content1="___content1___" item2="Género" content2="___content2___" item3 = "Volúmenes" content3="___content3___" item4="Publicado" content4="___content4___" post_id="" ][/es]

Ayano Yamane has a long experience in yaoi manga, so be prepared for some hot action. So, what is this crimson spell about? Our protagonist in this manga is Prince Valdrigr Alsvieth (Vald), who turns into a monster due to the course. To break the spell, he enlists the help of the magician Lavir Hropter (Havi) and they go into a journey. Havi makes sure to keep the beast inside Vald in control, while drama and fantasy surround the pair. If xxxHolic enticed you because of its artwork, you will like the gorgeous visuals in Crimson Spell. The relationship between Vald and Havi reminds us a bit of Watanuki and Doumeki, not only because it is slightly conflictive, but because one helps the other control their powers. And oh, the comedy is gold! Their relationship also becomes deeper with time, so, if you ever fantasized with the xxxHolic protagonists as a couple, you may want to give a chance to Crimson Spell. If you do not like yaoi, don’t worry! There is enough epicness here for you as well.

6. Ran to Haiiro no Sekai (Gray and Wonder around Her)

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="4047305820" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]
[en][information_general item1 = "Authors" content1="Aki Irie" item2="Genres" content2="Drama, Fantasy, Romance, Supernatural, Seinen" item3 = "Volumes" content3="7" item4="Published" content4="Dec 15, 2008 to Apr 15, 2015" ][/en]
[es][information_general item1 = "Mangaka" content1="___content1___" item2="Género" content2="___content2___" item3 = "Volúmenes" content3="___content3___" item4="Publicado" content4="___content4___" post_id="" ][/es]

Most of the work of Aki Irie has been collected in one volume collections. So far, Ran to Haiiro no Sekai has been their most successful. Have you ever wondered how life would be like if your family was magical? The Urumas are a family of four sorcerers. While mom works to keep the world safe, dad takes care of Jin and Ran. Ran has too much power and too little experience, so she lives all sorts of adventures and misfortunes in her daily life. Ran reminds us of Watanuki, as he comes from a magical family too. Both manga can be pretty low key and enjoyable for those who like slice of life. However, there is a more serious story running in the background. The main difference besides having a female protagonist, is that Ran has a safe family environment and knows the basic rules. Watanuki had to learn everything from scratch. If you want a relaxing manga about magic people, we can not recommend Ran enough!

Final Thoughts

What is the price of our desires? xxxHolic and similar manga remind us that there are no coincidences, only the unavoidable. It might sound sinister for some, but if CLAMP has shown something in their stories is how strong wills can conquer everything. Yes, there are prices to pay and consequences, but if we are courageous and thoughtful enough, we can get the best of it… especially if we have friends around us, like Watanuki. And yes, youkai can be great friends too! Which other manga like xxxHolic do you like? What do you miss the most about xxxHolic? Do not forget that we are open to all your comments and suggestions. See you soon at Yuuko’s shop!

Haven’t you ever wanted to escape from the boring world around you? Isekai is a great way to watch how it would unfold. There is something very entertaining about seeing new world charm meet old world style. Furthermore, if it’s a quality production, the end result is an exciting and rich landscape for the main character (and by extension, the viewer) to enjoy exploring. In Another World with my Smartphone certainly incorporates a few fantastical elements in its story, placing an overpowered main character in an environment where using magic is the norm. Are you craving to see another world yet? Let’s take a look at two Winter 2018 anime that will take you there!

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="crunchyroll" url="http://www.crunchyroll.com/death-march-to-the-parallel-world-rhapsody" ]
[Information episodes="12" aired="January 2018 - March 2018" ]

Twenty-nine-year-old programmer Suzuki Ichirou, also known as Satou while in-game, is consumed in his work debugging and checking code for some yet unreleased games. After more than just a hard day’s work, Suzuki falls asleep at the office only to awaken inside of one of the games that he was working on! What’s more, he has reverted back to his fifteen-year-old self. He finds that he is somehow trapped within the game, with no log-out option. While this is concerning, he finds this new fantasy world to be way more exciting than work and enthusiastically sets out on a journey to find a way back home.

Three Major Similarities Between Isekai wa Smartphone to Tomo ni and Death March kara Hajimaru Isekai Kyousoukyoku

1. A harem of beautiful young women.

During their travels, both Satou and Touya unintentionally build a harem of attractive female admirers. In the first episode, Satou, the main character in Death March, saves a military mage named Zena Marientail from a nasty fall during her battle with a Wyvern. Next, he becomes the new owner of three demi-human slave girls whom he christens Liza, Pochi, and Tama. Shortly after that, he buys two more slave girls, Arisa and Lulu, from a slave merchant. In a later incident, he meets Mia, a young (looking) elf, and Nana, a homunculus. This amounts to a total of seven beautiful girls who all follow Satou around. In the first episode, Touya, the main character in Smartphone, saves two twins sisters named Elize and Linze Silhoueska from being robbed by thugs. Next, he assists a samurai girl named Yae, who becomes a travel companion of his. Shortly after that, he meets Princess Yumina Belfast, who becomes enamored with him and decides to accompany him on his adventures until they reach the proper age to marry. Later, while in the Kingdom of Mismede, he becomes acquainted with Leen, a young (looking) fairy, who joins his group after he impresses her with his magical talent. This amounts to a total of seven beautiful girls who all follow Touya around, the same number of girls as Satou (even though Touya has many more to come).

2. They stop evil plots.

Both main characters use their newfound abilities to foil the plans of the bad guys. In Death March, Boido, Head Priest of the Zaicuon Temple, riles up a crowd into purchasing his “divine” rocks and then throwing said rocks at Liza, Pochi, and Tama under the guise of conducting acts of divine will. While Zena intercepts any projectiles thrown at the slave girls, Satou scouts around for the girls’ master, Urs. He discovers that Urs is using a network of Sewer Rat people hidden within the crowd to create a dangerously aggressive groupthink which, in turn, will drive the crowd to buy more stones. If everything goes according to plan, the nefarious organizers will make a nice profit. Satou quietly disposes of the aggravators within the crowd, and then confronts the mastermind behind the violence, Urs. Satou exposes the deception to the angry crowd, and by using a false accusation, effectively redirects their wrath toward Urs, saving the slave girls from any further harm. When someone attempts to poison the King of Belfast, Touya lends his magical abilities to help find the culprit. The King collapsed from poisoning after drinking wine which was presented as a gift from the Kingdom of Mismede. Even though the main suspect is the ambassador from Mismede, Olga Strand, the very person who presented the wine to King Belfast, Touya is pretty skeptical of her guilt and conducts a thorough investigation of his own. He uses his Null Magic, Search, to locate the source of the poison, which he finds originates from the wine glass, instead of the actual wine. With this in mind, he baits the corrupt Count Balsa into a partial confession, which is all the proof they need that Ambassador Strand is innocent.

3. Want to become more powerful? Just tap a few buttons.

In Death March, Satou is able to use his in-game context menu to select which skills he wants to learn in seconds, which is incredibly useful for some of the situations that he finds himself in. Even better, sometimes he will auto-learn spells and skills when he needs them, such as when Satou auto-learns Psychic Resistance to counter Arisa when she uses her Psychic powers to try and seduce him in his sleep. Touya also possess a very similar talent for skill acquisition; however, instead of using a smartphone, he uses a book of spells that he can page through until he has found a desired spell. He can even learn spells from just by watching other people perform them. Much like Satou, learning this magic is pretty much instantaneous for Touya, and he can use this to his advantage when in the heat of battle (such as when he spars with the King of Mismede and learns Accel). Additionally, his Programming skill, which he learned from mimicking Leen, has become most useful for amalgamating magic and technology. With his smartphone, Touya can selectively target multiple enemies in one attack, thusly saving him the time it would take to recast that spell.

Liked Isekai wa Smartphone to Tomo ni? Watch Overlord II!

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="ZMBZ-11881" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes="13" aired="January 2018 - Currently Airing" ]

Yggdrasil, a popular VR MMORPG game, is shutting down its servers. As the final hour approaches, a hardcore player, Momonga, stays in-game and reminisces about the time he spent playing with his friends; they were once part of a legendary and very powerful guild, one of the toughest in the whole game. Momonga then finds himself stuck in the game post-shutdown. With the assistance of his old guild’s NPC servants, he decides to rule Yggdrasil as a fearsome mage called Ainz Ooal Gown and find out more about why and how he is trapped here. Overlord 2, the second season of Overlord, continues the story of his world domination.

Three Major Similarities Between Isekai wa Smartphone to Tomo ni and Overlord II

1. Building influence.

In their new world, both Ainz and Touya gather allies wherever they go. In Overlord, the main character doesn’t exactly have a harem, but he does have NPC assistants. Ainz and other members of his guild hall may be a pretty scary bunch (not only in personality, but looks as well), but even so, they have managed to make allies. In the first season of Overlord, Ainz became an ally to the residents of Carne Village. Furthermore, he now commands the Wise King of the Forest. In the second season, Ainz managed to implement a plan so that the Lizard people would be subservient to him, and eventually, they would even warm up to his rule. Touya obviously has made good with both the King and Duke of Belfast and the King of Mismede. In fact, both the King and the Duke have offered their young daughters’ hands in marriage, something that Touya usually avoids talking about at all costs; which is fine, seeing as how neither one of the girls are in their teenage years yet! As it stands, Touya is on very friendly terms with the King and the Duke but if he were to marry into the royal family, he would be related to the most powerful family in the entire Kingdom of Belfast. Not too shabby, especially for a fifteen year old. He has also earned the respect of Jamukha Blau Mismede, ruler of the Kingdom of Mismede.

2. Overpowered main characters.

If there is one thing that these vastly different main characters share, it is their obscene power level! Since all of his data from the previous incarnation of Yggdrasil has successfully carried over, Momonga can defeat a high majority of opponents with ease. Ainz Ooal Gown is known for his terrifying power and currently goes unmatched. His enemies quake before him in battle, and he commonly has to downscale his power level when he is incognito as Momonga. Touya’s magical affinity is quite astounding to the inhabitants of this new world. He is one of very few known individuals who can use all types of magic. He also possesses the ability to instantaneously learn any type of magic and any spell on the spot, whereas some magic users endure years of practice until they can use it. This, of course, is due to God’s enhancements that he bestowed upon Touya in order to make up for killing Touya with an accidental bolt of lightning.

3. Magic exists in both worlds.

Ainz is one of the only people in Yggdrasil who can use Tenth Tier magic. Most people are familiar with the use of magic, but not familiar with it in practice. Some of the most skillful NPC mages can only use up to Fourth Tier magic. Magical items are also a rare, yet not unheard of, part of the game. After being reborn into another world, Touya finds that God has given him the natural talent to use magic. So far, Touya can use every type of magic that he has encountered! It seems that many different spells exist in this world but that only a minority of them are actually useful in combat. The other ones can be used in everyday life to assist in tasks such as cleaning.

Final Thoughts

One of the best things about these particular isekai anime is the sense of creativity rooted in the plot. Their new worlds may be very similar in a way, but each one definitely has its own feel to it. Also interesting is the way that each main character approaches their situation uniquely. Will they fabricate a complex backstory to disguise themselves, like Satou? Or perhaps will they come clean about their origins, like Touya? The approach chosen by the character can have drastic effects on the events to come and can make an impression on fans. Which isekai anime is your favorite? What other isekai anime do you like?

They delivered a spicy treat to hentai fans in 2009 and wrapped up with its third and final release in 2011. If you’ve been following our hentai countdowns on Honey’s Anime you’ve probably stumbled upon a list or two that features Fault!! We feel its popularity is justified as Fault!! puts together some very erotic cosplay sequences and situations. On a smoldering hot day, Kota Muroto came across a classmate, Shiina Chiari at a convenience store near his house. Kota finds Shiina extremely erotic and couldn’t help but notice how she was provocatively eating her popsicle. Shiina came up to Kota and had a proposal for him. If Kota is able to improve Shiina’s grades, Shiina will repay him handsomely. Kota accepted the proposal because he thought he’d have a chance to lose his virginity with her. Shiina claims she has a boyfriend, but she’s willing to make sure Kota doesn’t walk away empty-handed. Our next pick is a series that we thought very highly of. So much so, that we ranked it at number four in our best new hentai of 2017 countdown. It really goes to show the depth of T-Rex when one of the better series from last year is only ranked nine on this countdown. While yes, it’s ranked at number nine, it’s definitely not a hentai you want to miss out on. Baka Dakedo Chinchin Shaburu no dake wa Jouzu na Chii-chan♡ includes Shiina, who just so happens to be one of the most desirable tanned females in hentai. Her thick proportions and her sexual appetite for oral sex will most certainly delight many hentai fans.

8. Soushisouai Note The Animation

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="dmm.com" url="http://www.dmm.co.jp/mono/anime/-/detail/=/cid=403jdxa57133/?i3_ref=search&i3_ord=2" ]

Soushisouai Note The Animation offers four different stories set between two episodes. The first story involves a double date that leads to some fun times at a karaoke bar. Story two involves a girl who has a very peculiar fetish and acts on it with one lucky guy. The third story is about the firm president of the swim club who gets caught swimming naked after hours by a fellow member. Finally, the fourth story follows three gamers who go shopping together and the horny females can’t control themselves and they all end up at Yurie’s house to finish what they started. Several of these inclusions on the countdown feature a combined effort from the well-known hentai producers Pink Pineapple and hentai studio T-Rex; Soushisouai Note The Animation is one of them. One of the reasons why we really like Soushisouai Note The Animation is because of its ability to deliver four exciting situations split between two lengthy episodes. Of course, when it comes to creating multiple stories, there’s a strong chance that it will feature more than your average amount of female characters and that’s the case for Soushisouai Note The Animation. Tan lines, threesomes, and sweat are all on display in this pleasing series.

7. Oide yo! Mizuryuu Kei Land

The story of Oide yo! Mizuryuu-kei Land revolves around an overly sexualized adult theme park titled Mizuryuu-kei Land. It’s a sexual paradise where almost anyone can go to and relieve stress. Throw away all your feelings of guilt and aversions against sex and totally let loose. This is a place where you can escape reality and have your dreams come true. Two friends walk into the park with hopes of finding sexy girls, unfortunately for one of them; he starts to generate feelings for a girl, which leads to complications. Speaking of our top hentai of 2017, Oide yo! Mizuryuu Kei Land happened to also land on that countdown at number two. This series is a real treat and should be no surprise that it’s landed on this list. What we love most about Oide yo! Mizuryuu Kei Land is that this series really puts you in a desirable fantasy that almost certainly wouldn’t happen in real life. The idea of a sexual paradise that takes place in a theme park where you can literally pick and c

6. Pretty x Cation 2 The Animation

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="dmm.com" url="http://www.dmm.co.jp/mono/anime/-/detail/=/cid=403jdxa57371/?i3_ref=search&i3_ord=3" ]

Pretty x Cation 2 The Animation is based on the visual novel of the same name. The opening act features a lovely girl named Honami and her lover Tetsuki. Tetsuki offers Honami to visit his house so he can show her how nice the flower she gave him has grown. When they arrive, lustful feelings overwhelm them. The second-half story showcases the blossoming relationship between a waitress by the name of Suzuka and her boyfriend. After shopping at the local mall, Suzuka suggests they infiltrate her boyfriend’s school. Once arriving, passion overtakes them. We went back and forth between Pretty x Cation and Pretty x Cation 2. They’re both tremendous series and both could have been featured here, but ultimately we only wanted one from that series and the sequel we like just a bit more. Pretty x Cation 2 The Animation is one of the better vanilla hentai out there. It’s something that you could easily watch with a loved one. It features romantic love stories and wondrous settings; including a snowy mountain lodge and a creatively lit water park cave.

5. 15 Bishoujo Hyouryuuki

15 Bishoujo Hyouryuuki is a fantastic way to start this countdown. We would like to fill you in on the story that is behind this completely original concept. Now when we say story, there isn’t too much to say really. This anime is about a guy named Kazuma and 15 beautiful girls who wash up on a deserted Pacific island, thanks to a devastating storm. Kazuma then traverses the island in hopes of finding some of these girls. He does so, and that brings out some very peculiar scenarios. The halfway point brings us one of the oldest series to crack this list, 15 Bishoujo Hyouryuuki. What makes this a great choice for number five is that 15 Bishoujo Hyouryuuki features a plethora of females in its three episode series. In fact, there are very few hentai at all that equals this hentai in terms of female characters taking part in sexual activities. 15 females partake in lewd acts all over the deserted island. This makes for a wonderfully varied experience and should appeal to nearly anybody.

4. Youkoso! Sukebe Elf no Mori e

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="dmm.com" url="http://www.dmm.co.jp/mono/anime/-/detail/=/cid=196glod0075/?i3_ref=search&i3_ord=2" ]

The world shrine in the ancient land of Alfheim has started to fade, leaving the race of magical elves on the brink of extinction. Alfheim consists of only female elves and according to legend a man from another world is destined to save the elven race. In order to save these elves, the savior will have to impregnate all the elves willing to partake in such activities. Additionally, the elves found out that sexual intercourse with this savior also increases their magical powers. Thus, the world of Alfheim looks to shine brighter than ever before. As you might have noticed, Youkoso! Sukebe Elf no Mori e is the most recent release from T-Rex and it really shows. T-Rex has never really had an issue with the visual style of things. Not surprisingly, the colors and character designs really stand out in this entry. The only downfall for Youkoso! Sukebe Elf no Mori e is the runtime of each episode is largely trimmed down to half the length of other quality hentai from the past, as is the case with much newer hentai. Elf fans must not miss this gem!

3. Lovely x Cation The Animation

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="dmm.com" url="http://www.dmm.co.jp/mono/anime/-/detail/=/cid=403jdxa57303/?i3_ref=search&i3_ord=9" ]

[es][information_general item1 = "Episodios" content1="___content1___" item2="Emisión" content2="___content2___" post_id=""][/es]

Dropping in at number three is one of the more romantic series on this list, Lovely x Cation The Animation. Spring is in the air, and the main protagonist confines himself in an apartment alone, enjoying his easygoing school life. After getting advice from his uncle, the main protagonist sets himself up to find romance and a relationship, despite the fact that he has zero experience on that front. He will meet several girls, each with a distinct personality, but they all share one thing in common, love. In terms of straight up vanilla hentai, our number three selection, Lovely x Cation The Animation has to be near the top. It features several different love stories between boyfriend and girlfriend. The h-scenes are very much lovey-dovey and the situations don’t escalate down a darker path, like many other hentai series out there. Lovely x Cation The Animation is a heartwarming, visually stunning series, that expands on relationships that take place in thrilling environments. If you’re in the market for something lighthearted, you can’t do much better than this series.

2. Mizugi Kanojo: The Animation

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="dmm.com" url="http://www.dmm.co.jp/mono/anime/-/detail/=/cid=403jdxa56764/?i3_ref=search&i3_ord=4" ]

[es][information_general item1 = "Episodios" content1="___content1___" item2="Emisión" content2="___content2___" post_id=""][/es]

Mizugi Kanojo: The Animation’s story brings together a pair of lovers Mizuho and Hiro. After Hiro suggests that Mizuho has put on a little weight, Mizuho decides that she wants to take up swimming to get her body back into perfect form. Hiro even offers to coach her since she can’t swim very well. With the help of Hiro, Mizuho quickly finds out that learning how to swim isn’t the only excitement she has been receiving from her coach. Mizugi Kanojo: The Animation happens to be a series that doesn’t share a similar art style and visually looks much different from many previous entries on this countdown. It’s not due to the age, but more so because Pink Pineapple handled the animation for Mizugi Kanojo: The Animation. Despite that, T-Rex was very much involved in this series and its quality could not be ignored. Mizugi Kanojo: The Animation features quirky personalities, pleasing character designs, varied settings and a comedic story. That all works out to be an excellent viewing experience.

1. Koiito Kinenbi The Animation

[es][information_general item1 = "Episodios" content1="___content1___" item2="Emisión" content2="___content2___" post_id=""][/es]

Koiito Kinenbi The Animation delivers several stories and situations spread out between two episodes. The prominent stories involve the Okunaga family which consists of the younger sister Anna, the eldest sister Kanako and their mother Yurie. Kanako’s boyfriend Yuuichi becomes the beneficiary of the family’s lust. The other story is about a girl named Aisha who is taking place of Santa Claus delivering presents. While visiting her last house, she slips and falls, suddenly being woken up by a horny male who is taking advantage of her. Furthering the story a year later, Aisha’s younger sister Sasha visits and things start to heat up in the cold winter’s night. Our number one pick, Koiito Kinenbi The Animation is not only the best T-Rex (collaboration with Pink Pineapple) series but it’s also one of our favorite hentai of all-time. It has cracked various lists and maintained several high rankings on Honey’s Anime. Koiito Kinenbi The Animation showcases a plethora of stimulating experiences and it all starts with its fantastic visuals. The character designs are extremely alluring and really set the tone throughout the series. The numerous threesomes and the wonderfully scintillating Santa cosplay just top it off.

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="dmm.com" url="http://www.dmm.co.jp/mono/anime/-/detail/=/cid=403jdxa57149/?i3_ref=search&i3_ord=2" ]

Final Thoughts

That will conclude yet another exhilarating countdown dedicated to the best T-Rex offerings. If it wasn’t apparent enough, T-Rex did collaborate with other studios and producers for these selections, but the fact that T-Rex was involved is good enough for us. T-Rex certainly has had its hand in some of the most critically acclaimed hentai and a lot of that has to do with how they animate each series. It’s so detailed and the colors pop. You can spot a T-Rex animated series from a mile away. With that said, what is everybody’s favorite T-Rex hentai? Did we do an admirable job ranking them? Let us know in the comments section below!

[ad_top2 class="mt40 mb40"]

Story

Honkai Impact 3rd tells the story of the Earth facing a terrible event due to an alien race invading dubbed as the Honkai. In order to combat the Honkai threat, elite female warriors are trained called Valkyrie. Able to harness the powers of advanced weapons and abilities, Valkyries are the only means of preventing humanity from being wiped out by the Honkai threat. Take control of a new captain boarding the battleship Hyperion as you take command of a group of Valkyries. Only your group of battle ready girls stands between the Hyperion and world destruction.

Gameplay

Recently, we here at Honey’s Anime began playing a mobile game called Honkai Impact 3rd and we already dove into it with an advertorial explaining our time with the game. However, after now having played a greater portion of Honkai Impact 3rd, we want to actually give the game a proper review. Join us, readers, as we dive into Honkai Impact 3rd and talk about our thoughts on it. Here is our review of Honkai Impact 3rd for Android and iOS devices! Let’s begin by talking about what Honkai Impact 3rd is really all about. Honkai Impact 3rd takes players into the world of anime inspired girls called Valkyries who are the only hope for the world left. Players will take control of various Valkyries such as Kiana, Mei and several others girls who each control in varying ways. Kiana—the first Valkyrie you’ll gain control—is a dual gun wielding warrior who is akin to an all-around warrior while Mei is a shinobi-like warrior with agile moves. Yet, here’s the question probably on your mind at the moment. What are you actually going to do with these attractive but tough Valkyrie girls? The main premise of Honkai Impact 3rd is to beat the living heck out of various enemies called Honkai. Players will need to punch, shoot, kick and slash numerous enemies with the Valkyrie they take control of. Each Valkyrie handles essentially the same but their combos and how they are utilized does differ greatly as some enemies are strong to some of the girls and equally weak as well. Mei—as we mentioned above—is nimble and able to dodge moves via a dash skill but equally lacks the attack power Kiana has. Another girl you unlock named Bronya doesn’t use her own fists but has a mech that can shoot attacks out giving her ranged abilities. Dodge attacks with proper timing and you can slow down time to defeat enemies and unleash huge hits with special attacks or combos. As of writing this review, there are several Valkyries that players can use and while the controls all handle the same for them, thanks to how Honkai Impact 3rd plays, each Valkyrie feels very different in design. There is also an RPG element to Honkai Impact 3rd in the form of leveling up your Valkyries and equipping them for combat. Players can use other girls called Stigmata, which can be equipped to a Valkyrie giving them boosts to their various stats. You can also level up weapons via breaking down materials and/or other weapons for reinforcement purposes. Even if you don’t like a particular Valkyrie, we do recommend leveling them all up as some will come in handy during different stages—of which 5 stages of several levels each are available to play—and not having them might make your time a bit more difficult in combat. Level up your girls and make them stronger so hard mode stages will be a breeze to get through! Now we mentioned earlier in our review of Honkai Impact 3rd that this is an anime inspired game. Well folks, we weren’t just saying that to hook you. Honkai Impact 3rd has every element of an anime with characters and visuals that mirror anime-like themes. What’s even better is that these visuals could be almost compared to a console download title. Honkai Impact 3rd is easily one of the most gorgeous mobile games we’ve played in some time here at Honey’s Anime and the fact that it looks like an anime title is just icing on the cake. Honestly, if Honkai Impact 3rd becomes an anime one day, we won’t be surprised, and we’d gladly review that series when it finishes airing. Finally, let us talk about another element we really love about Honkai Impact 3rd and that is that it’s free to play entirely. Players of Honkai Impact 3rd can make purchases in-game via microtransactions—these are for items like more stamina to keep playing, material to level up and stigmata to use—but none of these items are needed to thoroughly enjoy Honkai Impact 3rd. Even when we played for quite a bit during our review sessions, we found ourselves doing a dozen or so missions and never running out of energy to use. Plus, leveling up is easy thanks to multiple difficulties that add more experience earned and items to gain. A lot of mobile games pretend to be free but require players to invest a lot of cash to get the whole experience. Honkai Impact 3rd isn’t like that and the actual real-world purchases are just going to help you get leveled up faster but aren’t needed if you don’t want them.

Honey's Gameplay Consensus:

Honkai Impact 3rd is easily one of the most impressive mobile games we’ve played in quite a long time here at Honey’s Anime. Not only do the visuals look incredible and the combat is both smooth and responsive, but Honkai Impact 3rd has potential to keep getting better with the events and updates already releasing for it. What makes Honkai Impact 3rd even better is that it is 100% free! Sure, there are in-game purchases you can make that will help you level considerably faster but honestly, we had no issues leveling up normally by just doing the missions on harder difficulty. Honkai Impact 3rd is a title we think you folks will really like and should download it as soon as you can.

Honey's Pros:

  • Impressive almost console level visuals
  • Responsive and simple controls
  • Anime-like story and presentation
  • Free to play
  • Several characters who each play quite differently

Honey's Cons:

  • Could use some more environments to fight in

Honey's Final Verdict:

Mobile games can either be quick games that lose enjoyment fast or require so many in-game purchases that they really aren’t free ultimately. That isn’t the case with Honkai Impact 3rd. We really are loving Honkai Impact 3rd as it is free but looks and plays like a game that we could easily see us paying $20 dollars or more. With constant updates and new events being added, Honkai Impact 3rd is looking to be a game we won’t grow bored of any time soon. Download Honkai Impact 3rd for free today and we highly doubt you’ll regret it! Are you thinking of trying out Honkai Impact 3rd? Da Yu Hai Tang Introduction and Story

Da Yu Hai Tang starts off by telling the audience what you need to know going in. In many ways, this could almost be a form of foreshadowing, but it comes across most noticeably as a form of explanatory dialogue. Our narrator sounds like an older woman but we quickly learn that she is our main female protagonist named Chun. Briefly, Chun speaks of two worlds that exist. One is the human world and the other is a supernatural plane where she resides in. However, with a trial that has befallen her because she has reached the age of 16, Chun is sent to the human world as a dolphin to see how it differs in comparison to her own. Here is where the brunt of the tale begins. The main plot of Da Yu Hai Tang is to examine a chance encounter between to very different entities—one being human the other magical—and how that brief encounter causes a whirlwind of change. Chun’s journey back home to her realm is thrown into danger when a fishing boat captures her and several other dolphins in a large net. A young boy—who we never learn the name of—who saw Chun in dolphin form earlier rushes to save her. During this rescue, Chun becomes scared and ends up being freed by the boy but in turn knocks him into a whirlpool which ultimately causes his untimely death. When Chun returns to her own realm, she begins to immediately try to undo her mistake in allowing this boy to die but in the process this act causes her to go up against deities with powers far beyond her own. We won’t explain too much of Chun’s actions in reviving the boy—or the sacrifices she has to make in the process—but she is able to begin a ritual to revive the boy and send him back home in his original form. Now that the boy is a dolphin himself, Chun must protect and care for his new form until he is fully matured and able to ascend back into the human world. However, Chun’s act of love causes a catastrophe to occur in her realm that begins to affect not only her but her family and friends as well. Da Yu Hai Tang might star Chun and Kun but there is one more major main character with relevancy in the form of Qiu. Since childhood, Qiu has always been the protector of Chun or at least tries to be. Qiu’s role becomes more focal in the halfway part of Da Yu Hai Tang where Chun is in dire need of help keeping Kun safe from her family and other forces that seem to put the dolphin’s well-being in danger. Qiu at first seems to be more of a rascal than a true partner and he even endangers Kun multiple times initially but later in Da Yu Hai Tang, he shows Chun a side of him that she begins to notice as brotherly and kind. Speaking of the halfway point, Da Yu Hai Tang changes quite a bit during the last hour of the movie. We see quickly Chun’s once playful adventure raising Kun become a true test of fortitude, diligence and perseverance. Da Yu Hai Tang becomes less of a cute tale and becomes more mature with many characters—outside just Qiu and Chun—sacrificing their happiness to protect each other. Without spoiling too much, Qiu especially undergoes the most dramatic scenes with him having to make choices that really feel relatable in the real world. Would you give up your joy for another person? The better question is, could you do such a noble act? The climax of Da Yu Hai Tang is where we really found ourselves gripping our theater seats tightly. Chun—at this point—is facing a rather cruel reality. Will she save Kun and allow her family, friends and those who live in her realm to all perish due to a wrath she most likely bought on? We won’t give away what Chun does or even what Qiu does but we will say that it gave Da Yu Hai Tang both a happy ending as well as a bittersweet one. Some of the characters of Da Yu Hai Tang find a true happy finale that made us smile but there are a few who suffer in the end and that left us with a heavy heart. However, when the credits rolled for Da Yu Hai Tang, we silently smiled and clapped inside our heads as we didn’t wish to disturb the few others who were watching the special screening with us.

What We Liked About Da Yu Hai Tang

Da Yu Hai Tang tells a story that examines Chinese myths, folklore and legend all infused into a unique tale of romance and fantasy. While we here at Honey’s Anime are more privy to Japanese anime movies and the mythos behind some of the more folklore focused stories, we do know a bit about Chinese legends and seeing some of what we knew explored within Da Yu Hai Tang was a real treat. Da Yu Hai Tang doesn’t reinvent the romance story but equally isn’t trying to be just geared at romance. The ultimate takeaway while watching Da Yu Hai Tang is that it is meant to show you how life is precious, tough, happy and sometimes a struggle. Da Yu Hai Tang examines real world themes despite being heavy fiction focused. We only wished that Da Yu Hai Tang was just a tad longer as one hour and forty minutes just flew on by as we watched this amazing movie.

Discussion Time

Many fans of anime movies are used to Japanese animation versus Chinese animation. However, Da Yu Hai Tang shows that Chinese animation isn’t something to take likely. Aside from just the animation, Da Yu Hai Tang is truly amazing telling a story that feels both mystical and yet relatable with its use of romance and life lessons perfectly melded together in the narrative. There are times where we feel Da Yu Hai Tang misses a few marks—most noticeably in the beginning half hour—but overall, there is definitely more to speak praise of. Let us examine now why you should check out Da Yu Hai Tang and equally why it might not be your cup of tea.

Why You Should Watch Da Yu Hai Tang

Da Yu Hai Tang has several elements that will truly make you want to want to watch it as soon as you possibly can. Below, we point out what we felt were the best reasons we truly enjoyed Da Yu Hai Tang. There are dozens of reasons we could have talked about in terms of what made Da Yu Hai Tang so awesome to watch but we want to focus on the points that will really show our love for this Chinese animation. Now, let us jump right in to what makes Da Yu Hai Tang so darn good.

1. Incredible narrative with a twist on Chinese folklore

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="douban.com" url="https://movie.douban.com/subject/5045678/?from=showing" ]

Here at Honey’s Anime, we aren’t historians on all things Chinese. There are a lot of folklore and legends we don’t fully understand and that worried us initially when hearing about Da Yu Hai Tang as it is primarily focused on showing off a lot of the mythos in Chinese folktales and legends. Thankfully, there were plenty of mythological themes in Da Yu Hai Tang that we did know and we loved seeing it presented in such an epic and endearing way. The folklore focused themes actually work alongside the romance/drama filled plot to create a narrative that just feels unique and engaging. There was never a moment where a lack of understanding Chinese folklore—which we discuss down below what we mean by this—caused us to be taken out of the experience. More so, even when something we didn’t understand happened on screen the plot was able to work nonetheless and provide a captivating moment within Da Yu Hai Tang. Some movies—and we aren’t just saying anime ones—try to infuse myths and legends but because you can’t grasp on the meanings behind their relevance, you miss out on why they are even there in the first place. This doesn’t happen in Da Yu Hai Tang making for a plot that relies on folklore but doesn’t the audience to know everything about it either.

2. Strong animation

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="douban.com" url="https://movie.douban.com/subject/5045678/?from=showing" ]

Studio B&T did a tremendous job animating Da Yu Hai Tang. From the way the water looked to the magical moments on screen, Da Yu Hai Tang just looked incredible and never once failed to impress. What’s even more incredible is that Da Yu Hai Tang is studio B&T’s only work on record! Usually any studio’s first movie or animated series can be a bit weak here and there but that was applicable to Da Yu Hai Tang. There was some collaboration with Studio Mir—they are responsible for Voltron: Legendary Defender and The Legend of Korra which explains some of the character design feeling like those works—but B&T was the main credited team which shows they did a brunt of the work. Needless to say, to both studios we applaud you seeing as Da Yu Hai Tang was one amazing movie visually.

3. Impressive musical score

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="douban.com" url="https://movie.douban.com/subject/5045678/?from=showing" ]

Aside from just looking amazing, Da Yu Hai Tang sounded amazing as well. The musical score and sound effects kept each scene working perfectly in Da Yu Hai Tang. Whether a fight using magic was on screen or a simple scene showing the companionship shared between both Chun and Kun, the musical ambiance was just on point. We could easily see ourselves relaxing or moving to some of the tracks used in Da Yu Hai Tang. Here at Honey’s Anime, we always makes sure to remember that without sound, some scenes for any animation could falter. Thankfully, the musical score and sounds were perfect for Da Yu Hai Tang and we think you’ll agree with us too once you see it for yourself.

Why You Should Skip Da Yu Hai Tang

Now Da Yu Hai Tang might be a great anime movie, but no movie is without its faults. There are a few issues that keep Da Yu Hai Tang from being a perfect movie. Will these problems make you dislike Da Yu Hai Tang? We aren’t saying yes but equally some might wish to avoid Da Yu Hai Tang because of the problems below. If you’re on the fence about watching Da Yu Hai Tang then read our issues with it below.

1. Feels a bit rushed at times

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="douban.com" url="https://movie.douban.com/subject/5045678/?from=showing" ]

Chun’s story of trying to raise Kun and keep him safe is beautiful 95% of the time, but there is an issue that can be quite noticeable. Often Da Yu Hai Tang feels slightly rushed. This could be due to the idea that time in the supernatural world that Chun, Qiu and Kun live in but equally it creates moments where story elements just occur for a second and then switch to a new moment. It doesn’t cause Da Yu Hai Tang to feel rushed overall, but in the beginning—when the rushing issues occurs the most—it does make us wish more was explained and wasn’t just skimmed over. Thankfully, the latter half of the movie doesn’t feel as rushed but some viewers might be annoyed for the first 30 or so minutes.

2. Might be hard to follow if you know nothing about Chinese mythos

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="douban.com" url="https://movie.douban.com/subject/5045678/?from=showing" ]

The biggest issues many viewers might have with Da Yu Hai Tang is that the fairytales and myths used in the movie might not make sense to those who don’t know a thing about them. While we here at Honey’s Anime don’t feel you need to know the various creatures being shown and the themes of the afterlife/supernatural rituals being conveyed—as we mentioned above—for some viewers this might keep you from fully enjoying Da Yu Hai Tang. There were times where we felt knowing just a bit more Chinese mythos would help us appreciate some of the more dramatic creatures and their greater purposes. Trust us, being an expert on Chinese folklore isn’t required to enjoy the base narrative for Da Yu Hai Tang. However, some moments here and there will be a bit confusing or odd if you aren’t a bit read up on Chinese culture.

Final Thoughts

Da Yu Hai Tang truly was a spectacular movie that kept our eyes glued to the screen from the beginning to when the credits began to role. Not only does Da Yu Hai Tang tell a fantasy tale with some romance and supernatural elements thrown in, but it conveys a message of living life to the fullest however you can no matter the odds against you. We walked out of the theater with smiles on our faces and that—for us—tells us that Da Yu Hai Tang was indeed a great movie. Are you thinking about watching Da Yu Hai Tang? Let us know in the comments below and if you have already share what your thoughts were when you saw it. Since 2003, Hideaki Sorachi's manga and subsequent anime have been entertaining fans on a regular basis. Billed as the final chapter, Gintama Movie 2: Kanketsu-hen - Yorozuya yo Eien Nare brought the Odd Jobs crew to the big screen. Within the anime industry, Gintama's irreverent humor is the stuff of legend; but, when required, the shounen series knows how to ramp up the action. Originally presented as weekly sketches with no real overarching storyline, Sorachi's manga slowly turned into one of the best action comedy series on the market. Gintama Movie 2 starts with Gintoki Sakata successfully capturing a pirate who was trying to record the film. In a shocking twist, the pirate reveals himself to be a time traveler and sends Gin-san spiraling into the near future. Set five years later, Edo has turned into an apocalyptic wasteland due to a devastating epidemic, which also claimed the life of the older Gintoki. Determined to discover and prevent the spread of the "White Plague," a disguised Gin-san brings the old band back together for one final show. From the eccentric hijinks to the bloody battles, Kanketsu-hen - Yorozuya yo Eien Nare incorporates everything great about the main series. While Sunrise's film did not mark Gintama's end, it provided fans an opportunity to experience a big budget adventure with the Odd Jobs crew. For those who love Gintama's comedy, action, and samurai, here are six similar anime worth watching.

Eiichiro Oda's One Piece ranks among the most successful franchises of all time. With a highly regarded manga and a popular anime adaptation, the adventures of the Straw Hat Pirates are unlikely to end anytime soon. Alongside the weekly episodes, the anime has spawned 13 movies, including 2012's Film Z. This time around, Luffy and company are tasked with taking down a rogue Marine Admiral named Z, who stole the powerful Dyna Stones and plans to shake the New World down to its core. In a rare situation, the Straw Hat Pirates and the Marines are striving towards the same goal, as they try to stop Z's reign of terror. When it comes to animation, One Piece Film: Z is gorgeous. The battles are fantastically choreographed and the story is rather interesting. Z makes for a decent villain, while each member of the Straw Hats is allowed their moment to shine. Similarly to Gintama, One Piece has its fair share of comedy, although the action scenes tend to take priority.

2. Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann Movie: Gurren-hen (Gurren Lagann The Movie: Childhood's End)

It cannot be understated just how big of an impact Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann left on the industry. Gainax's ambitious mecha series introduced viewers to the inspirational Kamina, the likable Simon, and the awesome Yoko Littner. Divided into three main arcs, Gurren Lagann started off as a relatively small-scale action series before eventually growing to span the entire universe. If there was one anime that deserved to be seen on the big screen, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann would be that anime. Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann Movie: Gurren-hen answers that call. It should be noted that Childhood's End is not a standalone product, as it generally retells the anime's first arc. While this might disappoint a couple of people, Gainax altered the plot just enough to make this worth a watch. Putting aside Gurren Lagann's story, the animation was always the anime's main selling point. As films tend to have a bigger budget than a television series, this retelling is visually mesmerizing. Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann was always about breaking through boundaries to reach for the heavens. Childhood's End is a highly entertaining alternative to the original, and Gintama fans are likely to appreciate the slapstick humor and thrilling battles.

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is a near-perfect anime. The series told a cohesive and complete story, with the Elric brothers getting a proper send off. With nowhere left for the narrative to go, how did Bones plan to continue Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood? Like Gintama Movie 2: Kanketsu-hen - Yorozuya yo Eien Nare, The Sacred Star of Milos is a stand-alone movie set somewhere in the anime's timeline. Ordered to track down a fugitive, the Elric Brothers end up in a strange valley housing the Milos, a group of people discarded and oppressed by the government. With the smell of rebellion in the air, Edward and Elric are caught in the middle of a dangerous struggle that could lead to the death of hundreds of people. At the heart of the conflict lies a young alchemist named Julia, who is willing to use the Philosopher's Stone to achieve her goals. The Sacred Star of Milos is a solid addition to the franchise. While very little can match Brotherhood's quality, Bones crafted an enjoyable romp that brings back fan favorites like Roy Mustang and Riza Hawkeye. As is typical with Fullmetal Alchemist, the blistering action scenes are punctuated with a couple of hilarious moments.

Kyoto Animation's The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is a slice of life comedy that is not afraid to get philosophical or experimental. Similarly to Gintama, this light novel series has a quirky and irreverent sense of humor, led by the arrogant but lovable title character. While not a shounen or action series, Haruhi Suzumiya tackles sci-fi and supernatural themes like alternate realities. Gintama's The Final Chapter was not the anime's epic conclusion, but the same cannot be said for the Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya. Set after the events of the series, Kyon wakes up to learn that Haruhi has disappeared and he is the only one who remembers her or the SOS Brigade. Stuck in this strange world, Kyon has to find a way to revert things back to normal! Everything that happened in the anime was leading up to this moment. Suzumiya Haruhi no Shoushitsu might just be Kyoto Animations' crowning achievement. With a massive twist and more than a few emotional scenes, the plot is beyond exceptional. There is a sense of urgency and finality pervading the entire narrative. Putting aside their genre differences, Gintama Movie 2 and Suzumiya Haruhi no Shoushitsu both feature protagonists who are stuck in an alternate reality where nobody can recognize them.

After Fairy Tail ended in 2016, fans wondered whether they would get to spend any more time with Natsu and Lucy. Thankfully, the wait lasted for less than a year, as A-1 Pictures quickly released Fairy Tail Movie 2: Dragon Cry. For those accustomed to Hiro Mashima's manga, this film is unlikely to hold any huge surprises. On the other hand, Dragon Cry delivers the ecchi-based comedy and blistering battles associated with the franchise. Certain items simply should not fall into human hands. Forged from the anger of deceased dragons, the Fiore Kingdom's Dragon Cry is a magical artifact of tremendous power. Unfortunately, Zash Caine stole the staff and fled to the island of Stella, prompting the Kingdom to hire Fairy Tail to retrieve it. Natsu and company soon realize there is more to the Kingdom of Stella than first meets the eye. Fairy Tail Movie 2: Dragon Cry is slightly on the short side, but it makes full use of its 84 minutes. The film's first half devotes the majority of its time to the cast's trademark comedic interactions, before shifting to a more serious tone. When it comes to the humor, Gintama fans should feel right at home, and Dragon Cry's action is genuinely exhilarating!

6. Stranger: Mukou Hadan (Sword of the Stranger)

Based on Miki Rinno's single volume manga, Sword of the Stranger is a historical anime set during Japan's Sengoku Period. Adapted for the big screen by Bones, this film offers a violent but emotionally engaging adventure that is rightfully considered a modern classic. Accompanied by his dog Tobimaru, Kotarou is an orphan who steals to feed his belly. Suddenly, the boy is forced to go on the run when an assassin is sent by the Ming Dynasty to retrieve his head. Just as all hope seems lost, they are rescued by Nanashi, a wandering samurai who agrees to temporarily serve as their bodyguard. The trio's journey is packed with danger around every corner, as Kotarou tries to figure out why he is being targeted. Sword of the Stranger is violent and disturbing. While Bones' film has practically no comedy, Stranger: Mukou Hadan has more than enough samurai action to entertain fans of Gintama's more serious moments. Due to its historical setting, Sword of the Stranger's fights are relatively realistic, but there is the same visual flare found in Gintama's battles.

Final Thoughts

Gintama Movie 2: Kanketsu-hen - Yorozuya yo Eien Nare demonstrated that a long-running shounen series can work as a film. Sunrise's epic adventure mixes heart-pounding action with outlandish comedic scenes to create an emotionally satisfying experience. These six recommended anime might focus more on battles than jokes, but they should be more than good enough to scratch that Gintama itch. Over the years, graphics in games have improved, following advancements in technology closely. With 4k gaming now becoming a thing, and different systems constantly competing to beat out each other in the market, it is no surprise that many of the video games nowadays look much better than those that came out ten years ago. Great graphics can truly lend to the enjoyment of a game, since developers want players to feel immersed in the experience as much as possible. Games are supposed to be involving, and it is a lot easier to feel involved when characters look realistic rather than blocky! That being said, “realistic” is not the only requirement for video game graphics – some of the best games use otherworldly settings and characters. The best graphics are those that have fluid movement and are able to evoke some sort of emotion from players. We at Honey’s Anime looked at a long list of games to put on this list, but in the end, we had to decide on only ten. Many of the games are from the past few years, and several of them are open-world settings, which could say something about where the gaming industry is headed!

To be perfectly honest, the beautiful settings and realistic cars are what give DiRT Rally enjoyment, as the rest of the game doesn’t really stand out too much.

9. Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus

Wolfenstein II is the next chapter in the story of William “B.J.” Blazkowicz, who is a war veteran struggling to liberate his own Nazi-conquered world. A first-person shooter with plenty of added mechanics to allow for player creativity, this latest game in the Wolfenstein franchise is enjoyable in both story and gameplay alike! It’s impossible not to love the unique setting and characters from Wolfenstein II, as Blazkowicz’s dramatic story unfolds. This game is made all the more engaging by its detailed character and weapon designs. The imaginative world is rather dark, being an alternate universe where Nazis have taken over America, but it doesn’t make the graphics any less impressive. It all adds up to make Wolfenstein II an exciting game, one that players can really get into!

8. The Council

In a brand new narrative-story game, The Council is a classic murder mystery, where players must uncover the truth behind a gruesome tale. With many interesting famous characters as suspects, you play as Louis de Richet, a member of a secret society who is thrust into this drama after an invitation from the eccentric Lord Mortimer… Though The Council is a newer game on our list, it impresses with the detail given to the environment and characters. Much like other narrative games on the market right now, the actions that you take in The Council will shape the course of the rest of the game. Richet himself has 15 different skills that you can invest in, choosing how to play in your own style. Of course, the draw of this game comes from the detail in characters - the realism of their psyche and appearance lends to your own immersion in the game.

Shadow of the Colossus is the tale of Wander, a young man who travels into a forbidden land. To save the life of a girl named Mono, Wander must traverse this foreign landscape and defeat sixteen colossi. Though Shadow of the Colossus is a bit older than the other games on our list, it has remained one of the most influential video games ever made. Its rather simple environment is still beautiful to behold, providing an atmosphere matching with the theme of the game. The emotional journey of Wander is made all the more dramatic by the magnitude of his enemies and the foreign world in which he finds himself. Both of these aspects are conveyed well by the graphic design of the game. The colossi are the focal point of Wander’s adventures, and the focus around them is apparent from the style of the world. Shadow of the Colossus even has been remastered for recent consoles, and its appearance in 4k graphics looks amazing!

6. Far Cry 4

Far Cry 4 follows the story of Ajay Ghale as he gets unexpectedly involved in a civil war between Kyrat’s army and a rebel group called the Golden Path. Ajay traveled to Kyrat to spread his mother’s ashes in her home country, but becomes embroiled in the conflict of the Himalayan country. Ajay will learn more about his parents and their past, even as he learns who he is. With a few improved mechanics from the previous Far Cry games, like the ability to hide bodies, Far Cry 4 is an open-world adventure of epic proportions. There is even a co-op multiplayer addition to the game called “Guns for Hire,” where players can pair up to take down bases. Far Cry 4 has one of the most beautiful settings for players to explore in the exotic and dangerous country of Kyrat. Though there are many open-world games with just as interesting settings, we believe Far Cry 4 to be above many of them. This game has the most attention given to its surroundings, encouraging players to explore. Far Cry 4 is a bit lower on our list due to some glitchy mechanics and the lack of detail in other areas (like enemy character designs). That being said, this is still one of the most engrossing settings we’ve seen in gaming, and the graphics certainly do not fail in that aspect!

Assassin’s Creed: Origins takes players back to ancient Egypt, where the Brotherhood of Assassins was born. With plenty of new gameplay mechanics to keep the experience fresh and a brand new setting to explore, Assassin’s Creed: Origins is one of the best installations in the franchise, even as it is the newest. This latest game in the Assassin’s series continues the tradition of blending the present day and the past in one fluid storyline. For true fans of the franchise, the promise of learning about the Brotherhood’s past is enticing enough. Combine that with the open-world beauty of exploring Egypt! Assassin’s Creed: Origins is exciting for old fans and new players in equal amounts. The graphics have enhanced this experience, putting an attention to detail in the game that draws people in.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is set in a fantasy open-world, where a monster hunter known as Geralt of of Rivia is searching for his missing adopted daughter. His daughter Ciri is a Source, born with magical abilities to spare. But many are out to use Ciri’s power for their own ends… Entering into the interesting magical world of the Continent, players can explore a world of many unusual sights and creatures. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is an engrossing story with a world to keep players coming back again and again! This game is one that is able to draw people in because the world is so realistic, partly because of the story and partly due to the authentic fantasy setting. Geralt’s world is full of interesting people and quests, so there is plenty to explore! With so much to do, it is easy to spend many hours lost in The Witcher 3. And for the most part, the graphics encourage players to stay for a while, with such detail allowing people to be a part of the world themselves. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is truly a fantasy game on another level!

3. Horizon Zero Dawn

Horizon Zero Dawn takes us into a post-apocalyptic world, one where nature has taken over the ruins of humanity. What remains of the populace has reverted into hunter-gatherer tribes, living off the natural land. Complete with changing weather and a day/night cycle, Horizon Zero Dawn is an immersive experience. Explore humanity’s past as you marvel in the beauty of the present! As Aloy explores the world of Horizon Zero Dawn, she learns about the mysteries of humanity’s past and why the Machines came to conquer the present world. The alien Machines and the natural beauty of the world are stark contrasts to one another. Yet they both seem to fit in Horizon Zero Dawn. Even the combat in the game is fluid and realistic, lending to the authenticity of the plot. This setting is open to explore and fight as you will, allowing for players to customize their experience to their own taste a bit. And the entire game is gorgeous in every aspect, from the combat to the background to the character’s intricacies. With so much to offer, Horizon Zero Dawn is one of the most enthralling games this year.

Ori and The Blind Forest follows the tale of young orphan Ori, on a journey to save the forest he lives in as he uncovers more truth about the past. A platformer with gorgeous levels to traverse, Ori and The Blind Forest has an emotional story and excellent gameplay mechanics, improved with the release of the Definitive Edition. A lot of effort was put into Ori and The Blind Forest, made evident in the beautifully fluid animation and graphics. Also, the opening sequence to this game is guaranteed to make you cry! Ori and The Blind Forest has a different style of graphics than many of the other games on our list. The way that Ori and the creatures of the forest move through their world is so natural! Every motion is fluid, from Ori running and jumping, to the way a blade of grass or tree waves in the background. The forest is gorgeous – it is clear how much time and love was poured into this game. Players are able to connect emotionally to the game, even though Ori is an unusual character. Thanks to the beautiful surroundings and the detailed animation, the game’s story can get the full attention it deserves.

Breath of the Wild is the much-anticipated addition to The Legend of Zelda franchise, and the wait for the game was well worth it! It has already won multiple awards in the gaming community, and for good reason. Link returns once again to save his world, but this time, he has a brand new world to explore! The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild takes every LoZ game up to this point and incorporates the best aspects of everything into the latest project. The animation is detailed and cohesive, reminiscent in many ways of the style in Wind Waker. It is a beautiful blend of 3D style graphics, with a colorful world that makes you want to keep playing. The world is open to explore, with plenty of side quests and dungeons for players to delve into. Though it is a fantasy world, Breath of the Wild is realistic and exciting to play, especially for long-time fans of the LoZ franchise. It is clear why this game was chosen to be among the first for the Nintendo Switch – Breath of the Wild alone is worth the additional cost!

Miki Aihara is one of those mangakas who are easily missed from our radars. The reason why is that her works have not been adapted into anime… yet. However, this does not mean that Aihara’s stories are not interesting. You only have to give them an opportunity! That is why we are presenting them to you now. Born in Shizuoka, Japan, Miki Aihara has been active for a long time in the manga world. Let’s see what manga Miki Aihara has to offer...

Warning: There are signs of abuse in this manga. Proceed with caution. English teachers in Japan, we found your alter ego! The protagonist of 5 ji kara 9 ji made is Sakuraba Junko, an English teacher in an Language School in Tokyo. Her expectations for her life in a new country were high, but at 27, she is still single. When she meets Hoshikawa Takane, a buddhist monk who expects his future wife will be devoted to a house life, Junko rejects him. However, Takane will not give up on her. Junko is a mature protagonist who is not naive, stupid or shy. The manga also takes time to develop the stories of her workmates, whose pains are varied and complex landscape of the teaching life. As for Takane, well, he is sometimes controlling with Junko, so he is not a very nice male protagonist. All in all, Miki Aihara might not have anime, but this manga became a real life drama already.

6. Sora ni Taiyou ga Aru Kagiri (As Long as the Sun Shines in the Sky)

Okay, maybe josei manga and conservative guys are not what you are looking for. Maybe you prefer something for younger audiences, something lighter and that makes you smile. In that case, we could go to East Edogawa Academy, the private school that Rieko Edogawa attends. Popular and energetic, Rieko is unbeatable with a tiny exception. See, this girl likes her childhood friend, the attractive Teppei Sakamiya. But oh, tragedy, he only sees her as a friend! Can Rieko do something about this problem? Miki Aihara become more known with this story. In three volumes, she is capable of using plot twists and develop her characters well. Although the story starts off pretty straightforward, there is a third wheel (Naoto Akutsu) added early on. Also, the ending is not what you would expect. Nope, we are not going to spoil it for you. Read Sora ni Taiyou ga Aru Kagiri to find out what happened!

5. Tokyo Boys & Girls

This is another school themed manga with a twist. Kosaka Mimori gets accepted in her dream High School and could not be happier about it. Now her other dream of having a boyfriend is a little bit closer, as a guy called Kuniyasu Kazukita is apparently interested in he, but is someone looking for revenge on Mimori? Is her pink colored school life going to be ruined? Not if she can help it! If what you crave in a manga is to feel identified with the characters and that they are well, natural, Tokyo Boys & Girls might be what you are looking for. Mimori is not a doormat, though. She might be naive, but she adjusts quickly to difficult situations too. Overall, if you are looking for a good manga to pass the time that remembers you of both the good and bad school days, this is a good choice by Miki Aihara.

4. Hot Gimmick

[sourceLink asin="1421508257" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]

Warning: there is also abuse in this manga. Proceed with caution. There is an apartment complex where only the very poor ones live. This place is ruled by the powerful Mrs. Tachibana, a woman you do not want to cross. Hatsumi Narita lives in such a place, but she gets in trouble when Mrs. Tachibana’s son finds her buying a pregnancy test for her sister. In exchange for his silence, she agrees to become his slave. Will Hatsumi’s childhood friend Asuza be able to help her in this predicament? In Hot Gimmick, we have two couples who could not be more different. One is the slave owner one and the other is a more realistic and balanced one. If there is anything that we can see in this manga is how poorly made decisions can grow wrong more and more, especially if you do not have money. This story is not for everyone, just for those who like more extreme emotions.

3. Seiten Taisei

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="B00BHTPZX0" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]
[en][information_general item1 = "Genres" content1="Drama, Romance, School, Shoujo" item2="Volumes" content2="6" item3 = "Release" content3="Jul 13, 1998 to Aug 14, 2000" ][/en]

Ok, so maybe you do not like to complicate your life. You love school and your life as a teenager, and would like to read about girls that are similar. Well, perhaps you should give Ako Doumoto a chance in Seiten Taisei. She loves shopping and is not worried about exams at all (they are sooo far away). However, when Ako meets the coach of the basketball team, she decides to change her hairstyle in order to get closer to the guy of her dreams. This is a more typical shoujo than is normal for Miki Aihara. We even have a love triangle in the middle of school life! The drawing on this one might look a bit old for some, but those of us who appreciate retro manga do not mind. Did we mention that despite being a drama, there are plenty of laughs in Seiten Taisei? We just have to see the faces Aihara draws in Ako when something unexpected happens! If you have a shoujo manga heart, just try this one!

2. So Bad!

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="B00DIWOEQI" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]
[en][information_general item1 = "Genres" content1="Drama, Romance, Shoujo" item2="Volumes" content2="6" item3 = "Release" content3="1992 to 1998" ][/en]
[es][information_general item1 = "Mangaka" content1="___content1___" item2="Género" content2="___content2___" item3 = "Volúmenes" content3="___content3___" item4="Publicado" content4="___content4___" post_id="" ][/es]

Warning: There is some abuse again in this manga. Proceed with caution. We know those stories about a girl who has to serve one or more guys. Kyoko is in such a situation. She is a great student who is eager to win the Student of the Year award. However, her life starts getting complicated when she falls in love with one of three brothers. They are her masters, but maybe her past is linked to them. Will she discover exactly what is going on? You will have to read So Bad! to find out! Although this is not the most original work by Aihara, the suspense saves it pretty well. Kyoko’s mother knows many secrets about the boys. There also comes a point when we do not know who will Kyoko chose among the brothers. The characters also have their own characteristics and are easily distinguishable. There is a bit of comedy, so if you do not like overly dark stories, do not worry because So Bad! is well balanced.

1. Sweet II - Embrace Me Until I Break

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="B01HPAZ5V6" cdj_product_id="NEOBK-19625" text="" url="" ]
[en][information_general item1 = "Genres" content1="Romance, Shoujo" item2="Volumes" content2="1" item3 = "Release" content3="2004" ][/en]

Finally, we are in the first place! The most famous manga by Miki Aihara is a collaboration with several artists. In Sweet II, several shoujo mangaka teamed up to draw short stories. In Ten Days, Aihara introduces us to Aiko, a regular high school girl. She has consented to enter an arranged marriage with Shiwakara, who is two decades older than her. However, they decide to be a couple for ten days before deciding if they will go ahead with the marriage or not. Will their little experiment succeed? We are not telling! Our protagonists are engaging and the story develops well for them. Miki Aihara’s art was also at its best here! If you are a dreamy shoujo type otaku, this is the right Aihara story for you. The only fault of Tend Days is that it is too short! It would have been much better to have an entire volume for it.

Final Thoughts

The worlds of shoujo and josei manga have proved again and again that they can be flexible and have room for everyone. Miki Aihara might not be widely known, but in her little universe of stories, she is engaging, sensible, funny and sometimes mysterious and dramatic… just like girls! Which is your favorite manga by Miki Aihara? Tell us in the comments! Don’t forget that we are open to all your suggestions. See you soon!

The live video platform known as Twitch doesn’t need much introduction to those who love video game streams and streamers. Twitch, over the years, has been getting more and more views thanks to gamers streaming some of the most popular games and providing entertainment while doing so. However, Twitch has been very careful to ban some games from their video platform and for good reason. These banned games, should a streamer decide to play them, will either get a warning or face worse consequences. Though aren’t you curious what are some of the bigger games banned on Twitch? We here at Honey’s Anime are already ahead of you and looked up what games on Twitch are banned and have decided to write a list of them. We looked up the more prominent titles and with a lot of them we understand why they are banned. Equally though, a few have left us kind of puzzled seeing as how other sites have been less strict with these gaming titles. Regardless, we shall talk about the games and equally why we agree or disagree with Twitch’s decision. Here is our Top 10 Banned Games on Twitch list!

10. House Party

Do you think you’re a smooth-talking dude? Think you have what it takes to woo the ladies and be the life of the party? Time to see what you’ve got in House Party. With several girls all waiting for a bit of company, you can show them a good time if you have the right stuff. Will you get lucky or will you leave the party with a black eye? Adventure type games would be perfect for Twitch, wouldn’t you think? Have a streamer make different choices for different endings making no playthrough the same. However, House Party is a bit too adult-like in it’s adventure concepts as you flirty with busty girls and try to get them to do obscene things. With nudity and tons of adult content, we’re not too surprised House Party has been banned from Twitch. This is one of several games that made sense to ban as we’re sure not everyone who’d be watching House Party would be over the age of 18.

Have you ever wanted a chance at living a dual life? Second Life gives you that by offering a semi real world within a video game setting. Meet new people, sell items, play games and mingle with communities from all over the world. What would you do with another life? Discover the possibilities in Second Life. On paper, Second Life seems like a harmless game comparable to the sims. Buy items, talk with strangers/friends and enjoy a 3rd person world in whatever way you want. Second Life literally gives you that, a second life. However, Second Life also has a lot of things that might be considered NTSW—Not Safe For Work—which makes streaming it a risky venture. Twitch might not want to see possible illegal activities or actions happening with no possibility of censorship.

8. The Guy Game

What’s better than a trivia game? Simple, a trivia game with hot girls! In The Guy Game, you are answering questions during summer break with a prize for choosing the right answers. Pick the right choices and the lovely girls will show a bit of skin. Answer enough questions correctly and who knows what else might happen in The Guy Game!? Spring Break has always been unanimous with time off from school and hitting the beach for some relaxation and fun under the sun. However, for college students Spring Break has always had an added element in the form of lovely girls to woo and see about hooking up with. The Guy Game might not let you hook up with girls, but it does allow you to play trivia and hopefully see a bit of M rated content. However, for Twitch, which already deals with worrying about who shows off too much skin, The Guy Game is a banned title no matter what season it is. Plus, The Guy Game is nearly 14 years old, so we doubt many streams will want to play it in the first place.

7. Sakura Spirit

[en][information_general item1 = "System" content1="PC" item2="Publisher" content2="Winged Cloud " item3="Developer" content3="Sekai Project" item4="Release Dates" content4="Jul 9, 2014" ][/en]

Aiming for the top spot in his Judo tournament, Gushiken Takahiro is feeling pretty worried about how the tourney will go. In hopes of getting some good luck from the gods, Takahiro goes with his friends to a hidden temple in the forest to pray. However, Takahiro finds more than prayer at the shrine as he meets a spirit who claims he is needed elsewhere and is sent to another world. Takahiro now must figure out a way home and why he was summoned here in the first place. Though it might take a while seeing as how Takahiro is about to meet a slew of busty girls both human and foxlike… Sakura Spirit in 2014 was pretty popular for being a visual novel with a slew of scantily clad woman to ogle and look at while enjoying a silly isekai story. Many let’s players even played Sakura Spirit on YouTube to hopefully obtain tons of views and new subscribers in the process. Ironically though, Twitch wasn’t too keen on allowing Twitch streamers to play Sakura Spirit and thus, it became banned from the video website. This one surprises us a bit here at Honey’s Anime as Sakura Spirit might have some strange scenes—chocolate covered girls, for example—but it really contains no nudity and is heavily censored already. Yet, for whatever reason, Sakura Spirit is a no go if you want to play it on Twitch.

6. Purin To Ohuro

[en][information_general item1 = "System" content1="PC" item2="Publisher" content2="Parabolica" item3="Developer" content3="Parabolica" item4="Release Dates" content4="Sept 12, 2013" ][/en]

Purin is taking a bath and you want in. However, she might not feel the same as you. Play with Purin in the bathtub and have a good time with it. Make Purin laugh and maybe she won’t throw you out right away. Annoy her though and you might be leaving with a hit to the head. Time for a fun bath with Purin in Purin To Ohuro. There are times when we question independent developers. Purin To Ohuro might not have nudity and might seem funny, but its’ also very questionable at times. Why is this random person in the bath with Purin? Why do you try so hard to fondle Purin and annoy her? Honestly, we don’t know, but we can see why Purin To Ohuro might be a bit too anime-like for Twitch and equally why they probably rather not risk getting hate for having a game focused on groping a girl in a bath.

5. DRAMAtical Murder

Aoba Seragaki has so far lived a seemingly normal life on the future island known as Midorijma. Living with his grandmother, Aoba has only worried about his work at Mediocrity and nothing else. However, when Aoba ends up playing a popular game called Rhyme, his normal life changes drastically. Aoba will need to master this strange game and learn of his powers within to save his friends and his own life. Aoba’s peaceful days on the island are soon to become a distant memory in DRAMAtical Murder. Developer Nitro+Chiral are known for making a lot of visual novels that are pretty popular in Japan. Some of these visual novels have even grown in popularity in the west. However, for any gamer who has played a visual novel by Nitro+Chiral, they would know that the subject material can sometimes be very…risqué to say the least. DRAMAtical Murder is no exception as a Yaoi based visual novel with some scenes that truly show some odd scenes. If you happen to be looking for a let’s play of DRAMAtical Murder on Twitch, you’ll be sad to know it isn’t going to be there as it a banned game on the site.

4. RapeLay

[en][information_general item1 = "System" content1="PC" item2="Publisher" content2="Illusion Soft" item3="Developer" content3="Illusion Soft" item4="Release Dates" content4="Apr 21, 2006" ][/en]

RapeLay focuses on a family of three women—Manaka, Aoi and Yuuko—who are being targeted by a man named Masaya Kimura. The girls find themselves avoiding Masaya as much as possible, but at times, still come face to face with him. Can the girls avoid this delinquent and somehow stay safe? Enter the dark world these three girls face now in RapeLay. RapeLay was pretty infamous back when it released in 2006 for having not only the horrible depictions of rape but also cruelty towards women. RapeLay allowed the gamer to literally be a criminal and media all around the nation were quick to show this game to the world as a warning to avoid it. Nonetheless though, gamers still found their ways to play RapeLay via downloads and such which also meant some chanced making videos of it on various sites. Twitch was quick to make sure no streamer on their platform would play it and we fully agree this was the right action to take. RapeLay is a dark game and while it’s not the first of its kind, it still is a game that most sites ban for its overly cruel depictions of sex and rape.

3. Criminal Girls: Invite Only

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="VLJS-55" text="" url="" ]
[en][information_general item1 = "System" content1="PS Vita, PSP, PC" item2="Publisher" content2="Imageepoch" item3="Developer" content3="Nippon Ichi Software" item4="Release Dates" content4="Nov 18, 2010" ][/en]

Inmates, welcome to hell and we mean literally. You have been placed here for horrible acts and your sentence is to be rehabilitated in whatever way seems best suited for your crime. Endure the pains of hell and maybe you can be released from your confinement. Are you ready to face your punishment? Even if you said no, you’re about to regardless! Criminal Girls, at first glance, can be very deceptive to the untrained eye. What looks like a normal JRPG with cute girls and various monsters to kill is actually far from the main crux of Criminal Girls. Within Criminal Girls lies a weird game where leveling up girls and giving them new powers means you must touch them inappropriate ways. Criminal Girls is heavily censored in the American release with pink mist covering various girls who would otherwise be exposed in strange positions but that isn’t enough for Twitch to prevent it from being streamed on their site. However, Criminal Girls 2—which is a sequel—isn’t specified as being banned meaning you might be able to get away with playing that as a streamer. Though we’d advise not to just in case, we don’t want anyone getting in trouble here at Honey’s Anime.

2. HuniePop

[en][information_general item1 = "System" content1="PC" item2="Publisher" content2="HuniePot" item3="Developer" content3="HuniePot" item4="Release Dates" content4="Jan 19, 2015" ][/en]

Picking up girls can be quite tough. What do you say to the girl you want to win over and how do you act are questions that run through every guy’s mind. Luckily, in HuniePop, you have been given a special fairy girl named Kyu who is here to help you! With Kyu’s guidance, you will soon find yourself becoming a chick magnet able to date several girls and even possibly get lucky with them! Time to embrace this chance you’ve been given in HuniePop! If you frequent YouTube and the various let’s players on there, then we guarantee you have seen let’s plays of HuniePop. This interesting fusion of Candy Crush and dating sim made HuniePop a very popular game and earned a lot of praise for being a solid game overall. However, those who did decide to upload videos of HuniePop on YouTube were made to censor the various sex scenes and other very graphic CG images when they popped up seeing as how they could via editing. Twitch is a live platform which ultimately means you can’t censor HuniePop very well and if you’re playing the adult version—which is a thing—then you’d be showing off some rather explicit images to your audience. HuniePop is a good game but definitely makes sense why Twitch wouldn’t want a streamer playing it.

1. Yandere Simulator

[en][information_general item1 = "System" content1="PC" item2="Publisher" content2="YandereDev" item3="Developer" content3="tinyBuild" item4="Release Dates" content4="TBA" ][/en]

Ayano Aishi is in love with her senpai—Taro Yamada if you choose male and Taeko if you choose female—and each day, she finds it harder and harder to contain her love. Ayano wishes that her senpai would notice her and isn’t willing to wait any longer for senpai’s love. Willing to do anything, Ayano is ready to show how much she loves senpai even if others must die in the process. In the end, anything Ayano does and will do is for senpai so that her love will finally be recognized. Our final game on our Top 10 Banned Games on Twitch list is Yandere Simulator and this is one game we wish wasn’t banned. We understand that Yandere Simulator has a lot of graphic content in the form of blood, murder, torture and various other dark elements, but at the end of the day people on YouTube have been able to play Yandere Simulator without censoring anything. Yet, Twitch has deemed Yandere Simulator to be overly graphic and cruel towards children—even though these are older teens—and has considered Yandere Simulator a no-no for their site. We hope Yandere Simulator will be given freedom on Twitch eventually, but for now, we do understand that some people might be offended by its gameplay.

Final Thoughts

We get that some games—especially the Adult Rated ones—are banned from videos for their sexual content and sometimes overly mature themes. Yet, some games from our list, we do wonder why they are banned when some even have the options of censorship in them. What do you think about our list above? Are their games that you’re glad are banned or some that really you wish they weren’t? Let us know in the comments below and for more gaming articles like this one, be sure to keep coming back to our hive here at Honey’s Anime.

Top 10 Soul Calibur Characters

[ad_top1 class="mb40"]

Originating as Soul Edge on the PlayStation, the Soul Calibur series created a unique style for itself by having its characters fighting styles be focused on weapons and having its characters battling it out on a 3D plane. By combining its weapon-based combat with the 3D fighting style, Soul Calibur was able to separate itself from all the fighting games that came out before it. The series captured fans with its creative gameplay, interesting story, and most importantly it's characters. Through its six main series titles and multiple spin-offs, Soul Calibur has created an interesting and diverse cast. With the upcoming release of Soul Calibur VI, there's no better time to look back at some of the characters that made the series great. Today we will be talking about the top 10 characters in Soul Calibur. We will be taking into account the characters design, playability, popularity, and their overall impact in the Soul Calibur universe.

[ad_top2 class="mt40 mb40"]

10. Yoshimitsu

Yoshimitsu, the name passed down to whomever in the Manji clan was the strongest and wielded the Yoshimitsu sword. The current Yoshimitsu of the Manji clan was invited by Oda Nobunaga to Azuchi castle in hopes of gaining the power of the Manji clan. Yoshimitsu declined the offer and returned to find his home destroyed by Nobunaga's army. Angered by Nobunaga's actions, Yoshimitsu challenged him to a fight and ended up losing his left arm in the process. In hopes of getting revenge, Yoshimitsu set out to find Soul Edge so he would have the power to defeat Nobunaga. While on his journey, Yoshimitsu saw all the damage Soul Edge had caused and started to rethink his plans of getting revenge. Yoshimitsu eventually gives up the idea of revenge and instead decided to destroy Soul Edge and defeat the corrupted dup of Voldo and Cervantes. Yoshimitsu is one of the more interesting characters in the Soul series with his introduction to the series being in Soul Calibur, but he originally came from the Tekken series. Yoshimitsu fits right in with the cast, carrying over many of his moves from the Tekken series, including the moves that do damage to himself, to give him a playstyle that was difficult to learn, but also highly rewarding. Yoshimitsu stands out amongst the cast of characters due to being one of the more creative designs that really leave an impact on the player. While his story isn't anything special when compared to rest of the cast, it gives a lot of information on the background of the Yoshimitsu character and Manji clan which affects not only the Soul series but the Tekken series as well.

9. Kilik

Kilik's story beings at his temple where evil seeds drove the monks to kill each other, Xianglian gave the Dvapara-Yuga mirror to Kilik in hopes of saving him at the cost of her own sanity and her life. Kilik was saved by Edge Master and he trained under him for three years allowing Kilik to improve his combat skills and learn to control the evil within himself. On his journey, Kilik would meet Maxi and Xianghua, together the three would bond together and agree to help each other on their journeys to avenge their fallen allies. Kilik and Xianghua would come to battle Nightmare and Inferno and thought to have destroyed Soul Edge. The next 21 years of Killik’s life would be spent battling the darkness inside of himself; each attempt of his to stop Soul Edge during its reawakenings ended in the darkness taking control of him. After realizing the darkness will eventually consume him, Kilik decides to leave a pregnant Xianghua behind as he decides to fight alone and protect the world by guarding the astral gate and attempting to close it once and for all. Kilik first appeared in Soul Calibur and would have his biggest impact to the story in this game, despite appearing in every subsequent release. Although Kilik seems to be forgotten in the narrative of the later games, he is still one of the most important characters in the overall narrative of the Soul Calibur. His character shifts from being focused on getting revenge and destroying Soul Edge with his own hands, to fighting in the background and stopping Soul Edge from ever reappearing giving Kilik a much more interesting development than some of the characters who continuously chase Soul Edge and Soul Calibur. Kilik's staff and fighting style are great for people who want to be able to poke from far away while still being able to get close and engage.

8. Taki

Growing up as an orphan, Taki was trained by the ninja Toki in a secluded village in Japan. At the behest of Toki, Taki would set off to find and eliminate to rogue ninjas. Despite believing Toki's orders were unjust, Taki would go a journey that would lead her to encounter the pirate Cervantes and Soul Edge. With the defeat of Cervantes and Soul Edge, Taki had hoped Toki would return to normal, but when she arrived home Toki was still corrupted by evil. Taki decided to try to save Toki by breaking the sword Mekki-Maru by using Soul Edge. Toki eventually succumbed to the evil and turned into a demon and disappeared without a trace. Over the next 17 years, Taki would never stop looking for Toki and still hopes to be able to save him one day. Taki first appeared in Soul Edge, the first game in the series, and she would appear in every game after it until Soul Calibur V where she would be replaced by her student Natsu. Despite being in almost every game, Taki has very few encounters with Soul Edge and Soul Calibur, staying mainy inside of her side plot to find and help Toki. Despite this, Taki is still one of the mainstays of the series with a character design and fighting style that impress people more than her role in the story. Gameplay wise, Toki is a good character for beginners; she is fast and her hits pack a punch with combos that aren't too difficult to learn.

7. Maxi

Maxi grew up on the seas as the son of a merchant. While traveling the world, Maxi learned to use the nunchaku. During his travels, Maxi encountered another nunchaku user named Zhang Wu and challenged him to a fight. After losing to Zhang Wu, Maxi realized he wasn't as strong as he had believed and asked Zhang Wu to train him. After the death of his father, Maxi took his father's ship and became a freelance pirate. His life as a pirate would come to an end after the deaths of his crew, Maxi joins Kilik on his journey and vows to get revenge on Astaroth for the death of his crew. First appearing in Soul Calibur, Maxi cemented his place in the history of the Soul series and would be present in every game after his first appearance. Maxi is as stylish as he is powerful, with a design that makes him stand out especially in the earlier games of the series. Maxi's playstyle is both good and bad for newcomers to the series due to his ability to do a lot of damage with his short range and rapid attacks with little knowledge of how to play the game. Maxi is one of the more important characters introduced in Soul Calibur, along with Kilik and Xianghua their story is one of the major events that happens in the series outside of the hunt for Soul Edge

6. Voldo

Voldo was part of a Spanish fleet led by Vercci, an arms dealer who wanted to find Soul Edge to add to his collection. After war broke out in Spain, Vercci ordered a tunnel to be built that would serve as both the storage area for his treasure and a tomb for himself. Voldo would spend his time protecting this area and killing anyone who entered. The years spent in the pit led Voldo to become unstable, causing him to see visions of his former master, telling him to seek out Soul Edge. Voldo's first few trips out of the pit would be failures as he stalked Ivy and stole Yoshimitsu's sword due to their Soul Edge fragments giving off the same evil aura as Soul Edge. Voldo would finally be free of his visions of Vercci after Kilik purifies his mind. Voldo would later leave the pit and work under Graf Dumas who protects him when Patroklos comes to kill him, Voldo has been in every Soul Calibur game since Soul Edge and his popularity comes more from his crazy style and design than his involvement in the story. While he does have a connection to Nightmare and Soul Edge, he's more known for his very fitting rivalry with Soul Calibur's other unique character Yoshimitsu. Voldo design often draws a comparison to masochism and his movements look inhuman and quite unsettling. With his unique style, many people like to take Voldo for a spin when playing Soul Calibur, but he is quite tricky to get a hang of, putting off many casual Voldo fans. Voldo is one of the more impressive characters in the series, due to the developers managing to create such a deep and interesting character despite him not having any lines of dialogue and only a few major story events throughout the history of the series.

5. Sophitia

Sophitia grew up in Athens as the daughter on a baker. One day the god Hephaestus appeared before her and ordered her to find and destroy Soul Edge. Her quest to find Soul Edge eventually led her to Spain where she would encounter the pirate Cervantes and Soul Edge. Sophitia challenged Cervantes, but she was defeated after one of the twin swords was shattered, sending shards of Soul Edge into her body. Sophitia would be saved by Taki who finished off Cervantes and returned Sophitia to her family. After returning home, Sophitia fell in love with Rothion and would give birth to two children named Patroklos and Pyrrha. Sophitia's happy family life would soon be challenged when she is forced to set out to try to stop Soul edge after discovering the Soul Edge shards in her body had not only cursed her but her children as well. Sophitia is one of the most important characters in the entire Soul series. Sophitia has connections to some of the main characters throughout the series, with her sister Cassandra becoming one of the most important characters after Soul Calibur II and her children Patrokols and Pyrrha being the main characters in Soul Calibur V. Sophitia's battle with Cervantes ends up being one of the most important in the series, as it sets the rest of the series in motion. While she isn't a major factor in the battle against Soul Edge after Soul Calibur, her importance to the overall plot makes her by far one of the most important characters.

4. Ivy

Isabella Valentine, better known as Ivy, is one of the most popular characters in the series. First appearing in Soul Calibur, Ivy set out to destroy Soul Edge, the sword that corrupted her father Cervantes. As she begins her journey, she meets Nightmare and they help each other on their journeys. Ivy learns that Nightmare was the one who possessed Soul Edge after Nightmare is defeated and learns that her own sword was crafted with the powers of Soul Edge. Ivy decided to find Soul Calibur and destroy her not just Soul Edge, but every shard of Soul Edge she encountered. Her journey eventually led her to have a final clash with her father who was still suffering from the time he wielded Soul Edge causing her to reclaim her soul and release the countless number of souls her father had taken. Despite her many victories, Ivy continues to search for and destroy Soul Edge once and for all. With connections to both of the major antagonists in the series, Ivy was originally seen as a villain and eventually grew to be an anti-hero, willing to destroy Soul Edge no matter who she had to hurt. With the most recent release in the main series, Ivy has taken one step further, electing to help the heroes, solidifying her place as a hero and completed her transformation from good to evil. Ivy's play style is often thought of as one of the hardest in the game, causing her to be much less accessible to the average player. Ivy is one of the more developed characters in the series, becoming a stronger and smarter character after each game as she learns from her failed attempts at destroying Soul Edge.

3. Mitsurugi

Tired of seeing his homeland destroyed by war, Heishiro Mitsurugi picked up the sword at age 14 and became a samurai whose name became well known during the Sengoku Jidai, garnering praise from both Uesugi Kenshin and Oda Nobunaga. Fearing the change the rifle would have on war, Misurugi set out to find Soul Edge so he would have the power to never be outdone in battle. Mitsurugi failed to track down Soul Edge and returned home to work as a mercenary. Mitsurugi would set out to find Soul Edge again after a defeat by the tanegashima wielding Teppou Hei, forcing him to leave home in shame and track down Nightmare. Mitsurugi would once again have no luck finding Soul Edge. He returned home and challenged and defeated Teppou Hei thanks to the skills he had obtained on his journey. Mitsurugi gave up in his search of Soul Edge, instead, he focused on battling stronger and stronger opponents trying to quench his thirst for battle. Mitsurugi is one of the characters that has appeared in every single Soul Calibur game. Despite not being the main character and giving up in his pursuit of Soul Edge by Soul Calibur III, Mitsurugi became one of if not the most popular characters in the series. Being one of the faces of the franchise, Mitsurugi has garnered many fans for everything from his design to his balanced fighting style that is easy for anybody to pick up and play with. Mitsurugi has been on many of the cover arts and when people think of Soul Calibur Mitsurugi is always one of the first characters to come to their minds. Outside of having a bigger impact on the story, you couldn't ask for a better character.

2. Nightmare

Nightmare is in the incarnation of Soul Edge. Nightmare first appeared after Siegfried obtains Soul Edge, slowly corrupting and taking over Siegfried. Nightmare puts together a group consisting of Astaroth, Ivy and Aeon Calcos in order to collect souls faster and increase his power. Nightmares plans are stopped by Kilik’s group during the battle at Ostrheinsburg Chapel as Nightmare falls into the world Astral Chaos. Nightmare eventually returns to Ostrheinsburg Chapel and is confronted by Raphael who is almost killed by Nightmare, but Siegfried gains temporary control over his body allowing Raphael to strike Nightmare setting Siegfried free and causing Soul Edge to release Soul Calibur. Nightmare would appear once again when Zasalamel helped animate a set of armor left behind by Siegfried, allowing Nightmare to continue his reign of terror. After being defeated in battle by Siegfried, Nightmare would stay dormant for years until he reappeared as Graf Dumas and would be defeated by Z.W.E.I. and Patroklos, who finally sealed Soul Edge and Nightmare away forever. Nightmare first appeared in Soul Edge, but he wouldn't become a playable character until Soul Calibur. Because Nightmare started out fused with Siegfried, his playstyle is very similar to Siegfried, with only some minor differences between the two. Nightmare is a big character who moves slow but has an impressive range and an array of skills that can annoy the opponent. The evolution of Nightmare’s character is one of the best in the series, with Nightmare only originally wanting to gather souls and cause destruction, but then he grows as a villain to the point where when he goes by Graf Dumas, he has turned into a much more manipulative villain choosing to do much more work behind the scenes by tricking countries to go to war and manipulating Patroklos into doing his dirty work.

1. Siegfried

Siegfried grew up as a rebellious youth, he came to be in charge of a group of thieves called the Schwarzwind. He led the Schwarzwind into battle against a group of soldiers that resulted in Siegfried accidentally killing his father. Siegfried started to lose control and came to believe his father was killed by the wielder of Soul Edge and decided he would go after it. Siegfried eventually found Soul Edge by the deceased Cervantes and he took the sword for his own. Soul Edge had other plans as it started to take over Siegfried. Siegfried spent eight years under the control of Nightmare, destroying everything that got in his way and killing countless people until Siegfried was finally set free with the help of Raphael. After his release, Siegfried obtained Soul Calibur and used it temporarily defeat Nightmare and Soul Edge. Siegfried has appeared in every game in the serious either as the antagonist under the control of Soul Edge or as the main protagonist doing everything he can to stop Nightmare. Siegfried has the biggest role in the story out of any character in the game, his time spent as both the antagonist and protagonist helped shape his character into one of the most interesting characters in the game. Many of the characters in the Soul series go through a battle within themselves due to their encounters with the shards of Soul Edge, but Siegfried's journey is much bigger than all of theirs. He comes to accept the sins he committed as Nightmare and spends his life dedicated to stopping Soul Edge. Siegfried's playstyle is similar to Nightmare; his moves are much more straightforward and easier to pull off, making him a more beginner friendly option.

Final Thoughts

Over the last 22 years, the Soul series has given us both quality games and characters that keep us coming back time and time again. With the decision to reboot the franchise with Soul Calibur VI, it will be interesting to see just how they use their old characters and what kind of new characters they introduce to the series. A.I.C.O: Incarnation Introduction and Story

Set in Japan in the year 2035, A.I.C.O: Incarnation follows the aftermath of an incident known as the “Burst” which was caused as a result of the project to create an Artificial and Intelligent Cellular Organism, or A.I.C.O. This resulted in the transformation of Kurobe Gorge into an area completely overrun by artificial organisms known as “Matter”, leaving it completely inaccessible. The research city has similarly been made inaccessible to civilians by the government. Two years after the events of the Burst, 15-year-old Tachibana Aiko, a young girl who lost her entire family to the Burst incident, was told by a transfer student that her body has a secret hidden within. This boy, Kanzaki Yuuya claims to know about Aiko’s mysterious body, as well as a lot about her family. When he suggests going to ground zero of the Burst in order to find the truth, Aiko readily agrees, embarking on a dangerous mission of catastrophic proportions. From the very beginning, we are thrown into the mix in this anime – it is fairly quick in terms of its developments in the story as well as the characters. Each episode is filled with heavy action coupled with crisp-looking and fluid animation that looks like it crafted. The first episode throws us hints about Aiko’s strange body; however it masks it very well in the beginning as Aiko is recovering from the accident she was involved in, the one which killed her father. She then regains her ability to walk and hence returns to school in what could be considered her total capacity; however, the appearance of the transfer student, Kanzaki Yuuya, causes Aiko to revisit the events surrounding the apparent deaths of her family. Kanzaki assures Aiko that her family is actually still alive, merely in suspended animation within the dangerous vines, tendrils and columns of the synthetic organisms known as Matter, at the ground zero of the Burst event. To make things even more interesting, Kanzaki demonstrates that Aiko’s body is completely made up of the synthetic organism as the rogue Matter. One more thing on top of that, Kanzaki Yuuya reveals that the current body in which Aiko resides was created in case of accidents such as the one she experienced with her father – her original body is at ground zero, with a synthetic consciousness placed within. Recruited by one of the scientists who led research on the creation of artificial organisms, one Kurose Susumu, Kanzaki Yuuya joins the Divers in order to reach Primary Point – ground zero of the Burst event. The next few episodes capture much about this current Aiko’s confusion at being one of two existences with the exact same memories, thoughts, likes and personality. This is a prevailing theme throughout the rest of the series as Aiko continues to contemplate her current existence as a non-human sentient entity. Her real body beams thoughts, visions and memories to her current artificial self, allowing Aiko to see real-time visuals of her mother and little brother in stasis. This link to her original body also allows Aiko to access particular memories, which often come to her in fragments. After getting acquainted with the Divers, Aiko resolves to join them on their high-stakes quest to rescue Aiko’s family from the Primary point. This soon proves to be extremely difficult as they navigate through territory completely overrun with synthetic lifeforms with a propensity to tearing off limbs and ravaging entire buildings. The majority of the series hence follows them into the Primary Point, as they complete their mission.

What We Liked About A.I.C.O: Incarnation

The most outstanding thing about A.I.C.O: Incarnation is its art, an opinion which could prove to be a unanimous opinion. The crisp, bright colours and use of shadows, seamless animation during the action scenes, as well as beautiful character designs make it a very enjoyable watch in terms of visual enjoyment. This is, of course, thanks to Studio Bones who tend to do very well in that regard. A.I.C.O: Incarnation brings with it a strange sense of visual clarity. Integration of CGI into the parts featuring mecha as well as the Matter was done incredibly well – as we said before, A.I.C.O: Incarnation is crisp. While it could have been done with characters with more depth, A.I.C.O: Incarnation takes what we would call a “detached” approach to character development and story progression. There are elements of foreshadowing, as well as filmic markers which drive a certain perspective within the show itself. The characters themselves are fairly generic and familiar, with fairly predictable personalities; however, the way in which we are introduced to various parts of their character is through a form of exposition which sees the characters explored through their mission to Primary Point.

Discussion Time

Like we said before, the art is what makes a great part of the watching experience and it is a major point as much of the events within the anime itself hinge on the art being impressive. A.I.C.O: Incarnation is worth the watch due to its somewhat distanced approach to character development. Much of the anime goes by with a thin veil of mystery cast over its various elements Aiko’s role in the anime seems to also greatly resemble that of Hiromi from Vision of Escaflowne. The anime has various moments which are reminiscent of other shows. Some of the character dynamics are some of which seasoned anime watchers will be familiar with. There are various things about A.I.C.O: Incarnation which were not quite well done. Characters were explored in a fairly interesting way; however, that is not to say that the characters themselves were all that interesting. They were, for the most part, generic characters who weren’t fleshed out all that much due to the anime’s focus on the journey to the Primary Point. This means that we are presented with a roster of about eight characters who are on our screens for vast spans end up being empty husks to which we can assign no sense of emotional attachment, relatability or even worth. Another thing we noted about the characters was the archetypal nature of these characters. We had our protagonist who was extremely important to the cause and is generally protected by the other characters due to her own inexperience in combat. Like we said before, this reminds us of Escaflowne’s Hiromi. This particular aspect can be seen in two perspectives: A.I.C.O: Incarnation is a show which drew upon the existing base for inspiration where execution was concerned and this gives us the opportunity to be able to trace back particular tropes to contemporary examples, as well as really old anime from a long time ago; or A.I.C.O: Incarnation is a show which used tried and tested character archetypes but failed to use them in a way which cultivated a familiar yet refreshing cast of characters.

Why You Should Watch A.I.C.O: Incarnation

1. Art

A.I.C.O: Incarnation boasts art that we wish we could see on a regular basis with every single show we come across. The art style is not completely fresh or outlandish, it looks much like Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress where character design and the general feel of the line art is concerned. The animation in this show is incredible: it is watching an incredibly fluid and beautifully coloured story play out with a great use of the much-despised CGI. To sum up, A.I.C.O: Incarnation is really, really pretty.

2. Dynamics

Characters in A.I.C.O: Incarnation are fairly generic characters; however, we learn much about them from the next character, which we find particularly interesting. In one of the earlier episodes, a squabble between the Divers Kaede and Kazuki reveal to us information about Kazuki’s wealthy origins and his right hand replaced with a prosthetic made with artificial life form technology. This is also evident in episode 7 where the Divers come to realise that Aiko is not completely human – the unfortunate incident with crystallised Matter falling on her created a scenario where such information about Aiko was hence released.

3. Nudges towards other anime

A.I.C.O: Incarnation is the type of anime one who has seen a lot of anime could enjoy simply because they are able to pick out the various tropes which make up certain genres, as well as character dynamics which mirror those of other shows. Aiko’s role in this anime is very similar to that of Mishima Lisa from Zankyou no Terror (2014), as well as Hiromi from Escaflowne. The show does well to mould particular archetypes, dynamics and themes to its dystopian plot.

Why You Should Skip A.I.C.O: Incarnation

1. Dull Characters

Even though characters and character dynamics remind us of other shows and bring in a sense of “intertextuality”, for lack of a better word, the characters in A.I.C.O: Incarnation are simply not explored well enough for the anime to be able to truly apply its own twist to these archetypes and dynamics. It often feels like we’ve seen it all before. This is also not helped by the fact that the show has no sentient primary antagonist: the artificial life forms are assigned the antagonist role. We have characters on our screens for much of the show who bear no more relevance at the end of the anime than they did at the very beginning, which is rather disappointing.

2. Pacing

The plot of A.I.C.O: Incarnation is quite complicated and leaves much to be explained, particularly at the end of the first three episodes. The time from which Kanzaki transfers into Aiko’s school to when he and Aiko meet the divers for the first time is rather short, which seems to frame everything in much smaller fragments of time. Twelve episodes sometimes is not enough to fully flesh out the lore of an anime title, nor is it enough to explore each character to a decent level of development.

Final Thoughts

Overall, A.I.C.O: Incarnation is neither great nor completely terrible. It does leave much to be desired in particular places; however it is a good anime to watch in order to pass the time, as well as to treat yourself to truly beautiful art and animation. The fact that this was a Netflix release is rather exciting as it points towards more anime with interesting or complex plotlines like this one. Perhaps we can hope for truly exceptional releases from Netflix and Bones in the future.
