With Seiji Mizushima at the helm, it is no surprise that Rakuen Tsuihou was a well-liked movie. The man did direct classics such as Fullmetal Alchemist, Oh! Edo Rocket—an incredibly underrated anime—and Mobile Suit Gundam 00 among others. With Rakuen Tsuihou, he decided to return to space with mecha yet again. In the future, everyone basically lives online. Not like how we are now, glued to our phones, but rather, everyone makes a virtual version of themselves and for the most part, lives online living out their dreams and fantasies. However, this is nothing more than fantasy as the Earth has been ravaged and looks like it belongs in a Western. Humanity likes to ignore this one aspect until someone called Frontier Setter reveals that their lives are a myth and that there is a better place out there for humans than an online world. When Angela Balzac is confronted with his message, she pursues him to Earth as a member of law enforcement. Angela takes on a physical body and rendezvous with Dingo, her fellow agent. However, she starts to see cracks in the information that she has been fed and taught about Earth as well as the fantasy world that she lives in. With her back against the wall, Angela has to make a major decision that may cause her to be expelled from paradise. If you loved this movie for the mecha, for the space & sci-fi, or just the dystopian setup, you are in for a treat! We here at Honey’s Anime have compiled a list of similar setups in anime movies like Rakuen Tsuihou to present to you. Enjoy!

Similar Anime to Rakuen Tsuihou / Similar Anime to Expelled from Paradise

1. Ghost in the Shell

Ghost in the Shell is set in a future about a decade away from now. Humanity has embraced the digital age and now anyone can get a prosthetic body and dive on the net. Humanity has, in a sense, become fully customizable. This is true too of Major Motoko Kusanagi who works for Public Security Section 9. There, along with a team of fellow prosthetic body users, they investigate crimes and terrorists in order to maintain some form of peace. However, a strange series of events essentially connects the team with someone named “the Puppet master”; a master hacker and who’s causing havoc. As Motoko and her team start to investigate, things only get more and more complicated and the plot thickens as they get closer to the truth, only to learn how little they know. More or less, without revealing too much, the stories of the original Ghost in the Shell and Rakuen Tsuihou are extremely similar if you cut out the philosophical dialogue from the first. Makoto and Angela are both strong-headed women who are leaders and work for the police. Both rely on a manufactured body to get around which is nothing like what everyday humans have. Both also, well moreso Ghost in the Shell, dance around the concept of what it means to be human while teasing that while technology can help us, it can also hinder us as well when we forget the past.

Note that this is about the movie, not the TV series, however, the TV series is certainly worth checking out! Set far into the future, Jomy lives in what appears to be a utopian society where the government ensures that everyone can live happily as long as you play by their rules. Disobey, and you will be suppressed. When Jomy learns of this and becomes an issue, suddenly he too becomes a target for suppression. There is another group though that is now after him, the Mu, an ancient race with powers who have been resisting against the government for decades. Can Jomy survive both and somehow figure out how he needs to survive? Like in Rakuen Tsuihou, humanity has left Earth for the most part because they cannot live there any longer. Technology has made great leaps to allow humans luxury as long as they follow the rules. Disobey, and you are out which is something Angela learns when she stops listening. While Angela is racing to find answers, she is hotly pursued which is what happens to Jomy throughout the entire movie. If you love sci-fi movies with a chase, this is for you!

3. 009 RE:Cyborg

Originally, there were nine humans who were “upgraded” in order to be used as weapons. As one would expect, this is not how things play out, and eventually these cyborgs rebel against the order that created them. They want justice and peace and order, or so they say. Eventually, unchanged, time moves on, but nothing is as it seems when the ideals that they once stood for have take on many meanings. 009 RE:Cyborg is also set in the future in a full-blown dystopia and this is what Angela learns of her supposed “society” as well. Hackers are an important central theme and thus, that is why the main characters are dispatched. The central theme of asking the viewer to define humanity for themselves as well as question what they consider to be just, runs throughout both movies as well. If you are into picking out religious themes and undertones as well, then this is for you!

4. Mardock Scramble: The First Compression

Rune Ballot is making all the right choices in life and is living every day to its fullest. Just kidding. Rune is actually a teen prostitute in Mardock City and is not doing the best. One day though, her luck switches and she gets picked up by a powerful man known as Shell. He gives her everything that she could ever want, but when she peeps to learn more about this kind man, she has gone too far and Shell has her killed by blowing up the car she is in. Rune is saved and brought back to life in a new body. Now, she lives to find out the truth and get her revenge. Preferably in that order. Rakuen Tsuihou and Mardock Scramble have a lot more in common than most anime fans pick up on. Angela and Rune end up being very confident, strong female leads that march to the beat of their own drums to a certain extent. However, both have issues with their new physical bodies when they are first introduced to it and need to learn to once again how to think and act like a human. Thus, the theme of “being human” is revisited. Both are set in the future, but not too far into the future to give the reader the impression of a future impossible to be attained. Mardock Scramble is a bit more violent though, but that’s because you are trading the suspense aspect of Rakuen Tsuihou for the action and violence of Mardock Scramble.

Yuji Kaido gets ill one day and has only one choice since he cannot be medically treated, he needs to be cryogenically frozen. He undergoes the procedure and wakes up 20 years later. However, when he wakes up, the future is nothing like he expected it to be. Aliens that look like bugs and are called the Blue now roam and rule a desolate earth. Meanwhile, humans have retreated to space to try and make a new Earth for themselves in a spaceship known as Second Earth. He joins soldiers as they try to go back to Second Earth with him, but he learns rapidly that nothing is as he is being told. More or less here, both movies are set up with humanity living somewhere away from a desolate and semi-deserted Earth. Angela and the humans of her world live online while the humans of Yuji’s story live in space. Both worlds are seconds away from disaster but the government silences all opposition. Both main characters also manage to invoke the viewer’s feelings with their moral compasses making the viewer want to go against what the governments are presenting as well. Ultimately, it becomes a final conversation between what is the supposed new world order and what the former world order was.

6. Baldr Force Exe Resolution

There is another layer superimposed on our own. The virtual world sits on top of our current one and information and technology are at an all time high. When Souma Toru, part of a group of hackers known as Steppen Wolf goes to pull off their final attack, they are caught. Not only that, but his best friend is killed. Now, Souma gets a second chance at life by getting a job working for the UN as a hacker, but Souma has one goal: find the monster who killed his friend and get revenge. However, working for a government organization is not as clear cut as Souma expects putting him in very prickly situations sometimes. More or less, both Rakuen Tsuihou and Baldr Force start out the same. They both have people who more or less live in an online world. Something is triggered and their “so called” utopia comes crashing down around them. As Angela and Souma dig further and further, they find out things they are not supposed to, and now their former paradises turn out to be hollow lies. If you want more solid similarities, both are ripe in gratuitous fanservice, hacking, mecha, and the questioning of what reality is compared to humanity.

Final Thoughts

Rakuen Tsuihou may not have received a sequel, but it does not need one per se. The story came to an excellent conclusion that touched on various topics that have been popular topics, such as humanity, bodies of the future, and crumbling utopia that are actually dystopia. These six movies and series we felt really do showcase all that Rakuen Tsuihou has to offer and talk about within the movie itself, but we also acknowledge that everyone has different tastes. What about you? Are there any anime movies that you feel would make an excellent addition to this article? Be sure to let us know! Till next time!

6 Manga Like Karakuri Odetto [Recommendations]

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="NEOBK-32192" text="" url="" ]

Sorting out the school life is already difficult under normal conditions. Can you imagine what it’d be like if you were a robot? Julietta Suzuki created a little manga in 2005 with that premise. Karakuri Odette brings us the story of a scientist who creates a girl robot named Odette. In order to comprehend humans, the robot is enrolled as a high school student, which will involve some comedy and romance, of course. What other manga bring the school life with a science fiction twist like Karakuri Odette? Let’s see in the following reviews!

[ad_top2 class="mt40"]

Similar Manga to Karakuri Odette

1. Dekiai Robot

[en][information_general item1 = "Authors" content1="Yuuko Kasumi" item2="Genres" content2="Romance, Shoujo" item3 = "Volumes" content3="1" item4="Published" content4="Feb 3, 2014" ][/en]
[es][information_general item1 = "Mangaka" content1="___content1___" item2="Género" content2="___content2___" item3 = "Volúmenes" content3="___content3___" item4="Publicado" content4="___content4___" post_id="" ][/es]

Yuuko Kasumi has some experience in the shoujo combined with romance department. Her most famous work so far became an anime called Marimo no Hana in 2012. In Dekiai Robot, we meet Yoshino, a girl who has a father who is a scientist. When Yoshino decides to give a valentine’s chocolates to the guy she likes, Yoshino finds out that her father’s new robot can be a problem. We have robot protagonists in Karakuri Odette and Dekiai Robot. The two want to find the meaning of being human by interacting with, well, humans. The main difference is the “gender” of the robots. Also, Dekiai Robot is a brief tale in comparison to Karakuri Odette. The style of both manga is different as well, with Dekiai Robot illustrated in a style more like the nineties’ shoujo (think about a lot of screentones and curly details), while Karakuri Odette’s characters have taller and slimmer proportions and the lines are cleaner. Anyway, if you like Valentine’s Day stories or are looking for a quick read (or both), this one might be a good option for you.

2. Sleeping Beauty

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="4088476395" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]
[en][information_general item1 = "Authors" content1="Arata Yoshikawa" item2="Genres" content2="Comedy, Romance, Shoujo" item3 = "Volumes" content3="3" item4="Published" content4="2003 to Present" ][/en]
[es][information_general item1 = "Mangaka" content1="___content1___" item2="Género" content2="___content2___" item3 = "Volúmenes" content3="___content3___" item4="Publicado" content4="___content4___" post_id="" ][/es]

Arata Yoshikawa has some experience with shoujo manga. In Sleeping Beauty, we meet Kanna, who is in her first year in high school. This girl is independent, but there is something in her childhood that has been bothering her. One day, Kanna receives a big package that contains Motoi, an android which was built to replace her friend who moved away a long time ago. This Motoi is cool and basically, everything that a girl would wish from a boyfriend, but is everything really as it appears? It looks like in Japan, androids and schools go well together. At least that is the impression we receive from Odette and Motoi. Both are involved in romances, and their stories have comedy. The main difference is that Motoi was programmed by default to be Kanna’s ideal guy. The style is also different with Sleeping Beauty’s characters shorter in proportion to Odette’s characters, and the first manga using a lot of screen tones and tiny details to amuse the readers. If you always have wondered what it would be like to have a cybernetic boyfriend, don’t miss out Sleeping Beauty!

3. Haru

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="NEOBK-1497583" text="" url="" ]
[en][information_general item1 = "Authors" content1="Umi Ayase" item2="Genres" content2="Romance, Sci-Fi, Shoujo" item3 = "Volumes" content3="1" item4="Published" content4="Mar 13, 2013 to Jun 13, 2013" ][/en]
[es][information_general item1 = "Mangaka" content1="___content1___" item2="Género" content2="___content2___" item3 = "Volúmenes" content3="___content3___" item4="Publicado" content4="___content4___" post_id="" ][/es]

Umi Ayase is also a mangaka with some experience in the shoujo realm. Her most famous work so far is Haru, which became a movie in 2013. This story starts in a rather depressive note. The boyfriend of the protagonist is dead and she secludes herself in her own home. Therefore, an android with her boyfriend’s looks is sent to look after her, but will Haru be capable of replacing the real person? Would that actually be OK? Yes, we can expect some drama development here... What is humanity? What makes us human? These questions are at the center of Karakuri Odette and Haru. The illustration style is different, as again, Karakuri Odette has cleaner lines and less shades usage than Haru, which has a rather cute style. Although the later has more drama since the beginning, they both have endearing scenes that touch the soul. We should warn you that you might shed a tear or two, so keep your tissues at hand. If you think androids are more than just machines, this is the manga for you.

Any Manga Like Karakuri Odette ?

4. Hibi Chouchou

[sourceLink asin="280944658X" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]
[en][information_general item1 = "Authors" content1="Suu Morishita" item2="Genres" content2="Romance, School, Shoujo, Slice of Life" item3 = "Volumes" content3="12" item4="Published" content4="Feb 20, 2012 to Aug 5, 2015" ][/en]
[es][information_general item1 = "Mangaka" content1="___content1___" item2="Género" content2="___content2___" item3 = "Volúmenes" content3="___content3___" item4="Publicado" content4="___content4___" post_id="" ][/es]

Suu Morishita has some experience with shoujo manga about unconventional protagonists, although most of it has been in short stories. Her longest work so far has been Hibi Chouchou. The protagonist is Suiren Shibazeki, a cute girl who is so popular in elementary school that she rarely speaks throughout middle school in order to not catch attention. In high school, she falls for Kouha Kawasumi, a silent karate student. Will this awkward pair be able to match? You will have to read Hibi Chouchou to find out! Although the art in Hibi Chouchou is more modern and has a dab for the unconventional, it is the most similar to Karakuri Odette so far. Both stories also have a slow pace, which let us understand the characters first. Although we do not have androids in Hibi Chouchou, human relationships are the most important part of the story as well. If you like shy protagonists and love stories, this might be a good option for you.

5. Zettai Kareshi (Absolute Boyfriend)

[sourceLink asin="3770464168" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]
[en][information_general item1 = "Authors" content1="Yuu Watase" item2="Genres" content2="Comedy, Drama, Romance, School, Sci-Fi, Shoujo" item3 = "Volumes" content3="6" item4="Published" content4="May 20, 2003 to Oct 5, 2004" ][/en]
[es][information_general item1 = "Mangaka" content1="___content1___" item2="Género" content2="___content2___" item3 = "Volúmenes" content3="___content3___" item4="Publicado" content4="___content4___" post_id="" ][/es]

Yuu Watase is a mangaka who does not need introduction. Creator of several successful manga adapted into anime, OVAs, light novels and other media, we assure you that anything she does will have what we girls want. The best thing is that she is still active! Zettai Kareshi might not be her most recent work, but it is funny and witty. The protagonist is Riiko Izawa, who is tired of her failures in the love department, buys a boyfriend online and receives the android of her dreams. He is simply perfect, as he cooks, cleans and adores her! However, the guy might be pricey if she does not return him in time… This is one of the most similar manga to Karakuri Odette. We have the same awkwardness in school, androids and how they learn to interact with humans. The illustration style is a bit different, but the storytelling is full with surprises in both manga. If you have ever wondered how life would be if we could get a boyfriend online, look no further than Zettai Kareshi!

6. Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou (Yokohama Shopping Log)

[sourceLink asin="406314593X" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]
[en][information_general item1 = "Authors" content1="Hitoshi Ashinano" item2="Genres" content2="Drama, Sci-Fi, Slice of Life, Seinen" item3 = "Volumes" content3="14" item4="Published" content4="Apr 25, 1994 to Feb 25, 2006" ][/en]
[es][information_general item1 = "Mangaka" content1="___content1___" item2="Género" content2="___content2___" item3 = "Volúmenes" content3="___content3___" item4="Publicado" content4="___content4___" post_id="" ][/es]

Hitoshi Ashinano has been on the manga scene for a long time. Although he is not super famous, he has had his share of glory with the adaptation of Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou to anime in 1998. The author imagines the future of Japan, with much flooding going around, a reduced population and no telecommunications. Therefore, the people have adopted a different and simpler way of life, coexisting with humanoid robots. One of them is called Alpha, the owner of a coffee shop, a scooter and a camera. She travels and makes friends, reflecting in what she experiences. So, did anyone combine Karakuri Odette with Kino’s Journey? Because the vibes we get from Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou are intensely like both of these manga. The slow pace, the attention to human emotion, and the female protagonist… Everything is carefully crafted to make us reflect about the nature of being alive on this planet. If what you like about Karakuri Odette is reflecting about the meaning of being human, Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou might be the right manga for you.

Final Thoughts

School can be pretty stressful sometimes, but hey, we all have had one of those days. And with those days, we talk about feeling out of place, almost like an android. Manga like Karakuri Odette remind us that being different is ok. Not everyone has it featured out and we actually can enjoy discovering how to feature out our lives and identities. Those people who really belong to our crowd will love us not matter what, which means that there is always room for some romance, of course! Another interesting point about Karakuri Odette is how people use science and technology. Although there are some that think we should not temper much with it, a lot of artists have dreamed about our future with androids. Does it have to be apocalyptic? Odetto proves that not necessarily. Which other manga like Karakuri Odette do you know? Which is your favorite android in school? Do not forget that we are open to all your comments and suggestions. See you soon!

[en]Synopsis[/en][es]Sinopsis[/es]

The young intelligent yakuza and head of the Ashigawa Group, Yoshifumi Nitta, has an easy and comfortable, quiet life. But one day, his life completely changes when a girl called Hina arrives in a mysterious object. Threatened by the psychic Hina, he ends up forced to live with her. Hina runs wild, doing whatever she likes within the group and at school. Nitta is left at his wit’s end, but being good-hearted, he gets stuck always looking after her. So begins the story of a soft outlaw and a free-spirited psychic girl!

Three Episode Impression

[ua_synopsis text="Hinamatsuri is about some psychic girl who appears in the apartment of a Yakuza named Yoshifumi Nitta. She basically goes out of control with her powers and a lot happens that you do not expect. Hina is completely ignorant of the ways of the world, and this yakuza somehow has a heart of gold and takes her in. Then, Anzu, a fellow psychic comes to hunt her down and kill her. After a hysterical battle of wits using their powers and rock paper scissors, Anzu is defeated but stays around in the town. She then lives with a group of homeless men because she does not want to take Yoshifumi’s charity. The comedy is so hilariously on point with this series with Yoshifumi’s straight man act and Hitomi working in the bar, that it is safe to say we are looking at the comedy anime of the season. Every moment has some sort of humor in it and while we are getting a story, it fades as the comedy is the real star of the show. Ikura has become a running gag because Hina loves it and it’s already appeared three times meaning it’s going to stay. If you have not picked up this show, run, don’t walk, to see it. The darkness is unending. The shadow of selector battles creeps upon brief, yet peaceful days… Kiyoi Mizushima, first to notice the calamity approaching, now starts to move to put a stop to the chain of darkness. This time, a new card called a ‘key’ has appeared that follows a different set of rules than those already established. As the darkness continues to expand, the ringleader and what their goal is, remains wrapped in mystery. Suzuko Homura, Chinatsu Morishita, Hanna Mikage, Ruuko Kominato, Yuzuki Kurebayashi, Hitoe Uemura, and Akira Aoi… Once again these selectors are gathered where their wishes and memories, as well as ‘keys’ hinge on a final battle that is starting now!

Three Episode Impression

[ua_synopsis text="Lostorage conflated WIXOSS is supposed to be the final season in the series as it brings all of the main characters and villains from the previous seasons and movies together into one giant selector battle round. This time though, there are new rules. First. Kiyoi is now a human and the main character of the series. There is a new card called the key card which uses a coin that represent the user’s memories and allows the human player to become an LRIG and attack alongside their own LRIG. If they defeat a foe be doing so, they not only win a coin back for their memories, their key card also absorbs that person’s LRIG. So when Kiyoi beats Aoi, Aoi is still herself, but it appears that she has lost her LRIG? There is no way to know what the reasoning is behind this, but fingers crossed it means that there will be a way to get more LRIGs throughout the series. There is still the same familiar, yet morbid tone about needing to take risks and avoid danger, but the tension and energy is still present making this an excellent watch. If you have not seen at least one of the previous seasons, all the character interaction might confuse you. It’s well worth the investment of going back and seeing the older series before this one though! We will absolutely keep watching to see if Kiyoi can break the chain of darkness."]

[en]Synopsis[/en][es]Sinopsis[/es]

This will be a follow-up anime connected to the Persona the Animation: THE DAY BREAKERS that aired September 2016. In the spring of his second year of highschool, Ren Amamiya transfers into Shujin Academy in Tokyo. Due to unforeseen circumstances and an incident, Ren awakens as a “persona” user. Together with his newly-made friends, they form the Phantom Thieves of Hearts. While stealing the “distorted desires” of adults who have been bathed in evil, they force them to reform. They also go around their town and solve incidents one by one involving adults who have mysteriously lost their minds.

Three Episode Impression

[ua_synopsis text="Persona 5 tells the story of Ren Amamiya who has just transferred in. There, he meets Ryuuji and they become friends. Obviously, a lot is going on behind the scenes and Kamoshida, the gym teacher and volleyball coach is at the center of it. Later they learn that he’s abusing the students after Ren and Ryuuji wander into a palace and have their personae awoken. Oh and of course, Morgana makes their debut as well. After that, they try to find a way to expose Kamoshida and help Shiho who has just attempted to commit . Then Ann gets a persona as they try to figure out what to do next. If you have played the game, then be prepared for the exact same thing. We saw it with the Persona 3 movies and Persona 4’s anime. The story is moving slow enough that we are probably looking at a 2 cours anime, but nothing has been announced officially. However, past habits do indicate that this is going to be 2 cours. If you have not played the game, the anime, like the game, is going to be very dark and gritty and confront various different issues throughout. If you have caught the Persona 4 anime, then you are going to enjoy this. We are going to keep watching as it was interesting enough."]

Spell formulists are those who use skills known as Jushiki (spell formulas) and act as bounty hunters, hunting down criminals and “the grotesque ones.” In the city of Eridana, there live two spell formulists: Gaius, who overcomes bad luck with his quick wit, and Gigina, a cruel but beautiful swordsman. These two may be natural enemies with serious compatibility issues, but when it comes to battle, they somehow work together perfectly. Standing in the way of these two are “the grotesque ones”, such as dragons and giants, as well as a perilous tragedy to humankind. Despite the hostility between them, Giaus and Gigina continue to live on.

Three Episode Impression

[ua_synopsis text="Saredo Tsumibito wa Ryuu to Odoru was originally supposed to come out fall 2017. However, when the director or the studio, no one is sure who made the call, saw the original work, the anime was postponed till spring to enhance the quality. We’re not sure what the original looked or was like, but the current incarnation is nothing short of a maelstrom as Saredo Tsumibito is a train coming at you very fast and dangerously close to derailing. Jushiki users and others fight against dragons in a world where there is a barrier region between humanity and others. There are seven other regions as well trying to make a treaty between all of them. Various factions are grabbing for power while Gaius is the uptight dude who likes to bang his girlfriend, Gigina is his partner and a special sword user with a fetish for house furniture and chairs. This is more or less Bungou Stray Dogs with different quirks, names, and faces. It’s just a real shame that this had half a year to fix itself and this is what we got. If you love the manzai comedy of Kunikida and Osamu from BSD and just aren’t as concerned about the story, then this series is for you. The banter of Gaius and Gigina will be about the only thing that remains in your mind after three episodes, because the story is an absolute mess."]

Urashima, an island floating on the ocean far away from the mainland. Urashima is often mistakenly viewed as a paradise, overflowing with nature. However, a difficult past and long-established customs keep the people of this living island prisoners. The residents of this living island have accepted that they have been abandoned by the mainland and are gradually being forgotten about. Then, one day, a boy drifts to the island, and he refers to himself as a “time traveler” named Setsuna. Setsuna has not a single memory left other than that he has a “certain mission” that he must do. He then meets three girls named Rinne, Karen, and Sara. Eventually, he begins efforts to change the future of the island. The story of this boy and these girls will untie the cord around the exclusive customs and various mysteries that surround Urashima.

A shut-in, Rinne is a night owl who stubbornly refuses to go outside during the day. Her hobby is going for walks at night. She appears to know something about Setsuna, but she is tight-lipped about it. It is rumored that approximately five years ago, she was spirited away, however no one dares to speak about it." img='']
[ua_character name="Karen Kurutsu" voice="Kana Asumi" desc="Main Character 02 Karen is the daughter of the head of the island. Karen has a strong-minded way of speaking, and is at the height of her rebellious phase where she has tried to run away from home and leave the island multiple times. Karen was a late bloomer when it comes to romance, and so Setsuna messes with her a lot. She is working vigorously towards her dream of leaving Urashima for the mainland. Karen believes Setsuna to be a mainlander and is extremely curious about him." img='']
[ua_character name="Sara Garandou" voice="Hibiku Yamamura" desc="Sara believes that Setsuna is someone from the future and thus some sort of enemy, so she is always trying to off him. She believes that there are some things that cannot be explained by science. Sara lost both of her parents in a fire five years ago, and while searching for the truth behind their deaths, she is starting to realize the true meaning of her own ‘destiny.’" img='']
[ua_character name="Setsuna Sanenkai" voice="Tatsuhisa Suzuki" desc="Setsuna is a mysterious boy who washed up on the sandy beaches of the island completely naked. Carrying the responsibility of an order to ‘save the world,’ he claims that he has come from the future. This is the only memory that he currently has as he has lost all other essential ones. He cannot even recall who he is or from where he came, but he is an optimist who is carefree and does not think too hard about things." img='']
[ua_character name="Mei Tandori" voice="Yui Nakajima" desc="Aoi is a slender, committee chairman-type. She wears black stockings even in summer. She’s an honors student and is a fountain of knowledge, but she can be so detailed that things often go right over An and Eri’s heads." img='']

There’s a higher chance she’ll take a photo of something if it involves a small animal or a beautiful girl." img='']
[ua_character name="Eri Sunada" voice="Takako Tanaka" desc="Eri is the mascot glasses character who fakes ignorance. She pretends to not know something only to play the straight man to Mei and An. [ad_top1 class="mt30"]

For those of us who have grown up with shounen manga titles, or those of us who love to read classic shounen titles, this is, of course, the one event we can’t just let pass by! In celebration of their 50th anniversary, Weekly Shounen Jump is holding a massive exhibition documenting their entire history, displaying all of their published titles in a rather nostalgic walk right at the Mori Arts Center in Roppongi, Tokyo. As it is 50 years worth of history, they had divided the exhibition into three volumes: the 70-80s, the 90s, and the 2000s. Presently, the second volume of the exhibition is being held, and it is, as expected, an amazing spread! It is a widely known fact that Weekly Shounen Jump reached their historical peak of magazine circulation. This means there are a lot of classic, much-beloved titles included in the 1990s part of their exhibition, and both Honey-chan and Bee-kun are really looking forward to walking down that road of nostalgia! Along with some friends and meeting up at the Roppongi Station, it was a short walk from there to Mori Arts Center where the exhibition was being held. With the many posters of the exhibition on the way, it’s impossible to miss! While you can also buy tickets in advance at convenience stores, it seemed that Bee-kun completely forgot to buy the tickets. Not to worry, though, because we all could also buy tickets on the spot, before lining up towards the elevator that brought us up to the exhibition floor on the 52nd floor!

Weekly Shounen Jump: A History

Known as a long-time best-seller as well as one of the longest-running manga magazine, Weekly Shounen Jump is a shounen manga anthology magazine that, theoretically, targets young male readers. Published by Shueisha as one of its many Jump line of magazines, Weekly Shounen Jump initially began their run as a biweekly manga magazine, before their circulation picked up and they began running as a weekly manga magazine starting the year 1969. It features more than half of the current most popular series as well as some that had gone on to be classic legends, including Dragon Ball, Rurouni Kenshin, Naruto, Gintama, Boku no Hero Academia, and of course, One Piece. The current Weekly Shounen Jump has hosted no less than twenty-three titles—half of them with their own anime adaptations adding to their popularity. Considering those titles, it is probably impossible for anime and manga fans to have never heard of Weekly Shounen Jump. At the very least, one of every manga fans’ favorite titles must have been published in Weekly Shounen Jump, at some point or another. Since 1999, Weekly Shounen Jump has also been holding a large convention called Jump Festa, which had gone to be one of the most awaited conventions in Japan. Weekly Shounen Jump is also the one who holds the annual competitions for newcomer mangaka, which gives winners the prestigious Tezuka Awards and Akatsuka Awards. Weekly Shounen Jump is pretty much the best-selling manga magazine in Japan. Despite the fact that its circulation had been declining since its peak in the mid-1990s, it still reached 1.9 million copies in early 2017. It was in 1995 that Weekly Shounen Jump reached its historical peak of circulation, reaching a breathtaking number of 6.53 million, with hit titles you will get to see in the second volume of the exhibition!

Basic Info

LENGTH OF EVENT March 19 – June 17 2018 (Volume 3 of the Exhibition will be held on July 17 to September 30 2018).
PLACE / LOCATION Mori Arts Center Gallery, Roppongi Hills Mori Tower 52F.

What Happened

The first thing we saw as we stepped out of the elevator on the 52nd floor was not the exhibition room, but the walls and entrance to the Jump 90s Café. It was the collaboration café that served food and beverages themed based on the hit titles of Weekly Shounen Jump in the 1990s. Since it was already time for lunch, both Honey-chan and Bee-kun were very hungry, and considering there were only about ten people lining up in front of the café, we all decided to drop by the café to have lunch first before going into the exhibition area. After waiting in line for about 15 minutes, all of us were ushered in to a table right by the window, which gave us a gorgeous view of the city of Tokyo, since we were on the 52nd floor! While not all of the 1990s titles get to be turned into food and beverages at this café, all of them looked super tasty and interesting. Fans of Dragon Ball series would be happy to see the “Krillin no Koto Curry”, which is a pun on Goku’s line of anger in his battle with Frieza. You can also eat a “Frieza-sama’s 530,000 Power Level Parfait”! Fans of the Nube series should definitely try the adorable “Yukime Daifuku Dessert”, while fans of Yu-Gi-Oh would enjoy trying to solve the Millenium Puzzle by ordering the “Millenium Puzzle Dessert”. If you’re a Slam Dunk fan, don’t worry, there’s “Anzai-sensei’s Taputa Purin” for you to try, so you can pretend to be Hanamichi and yell at the dessert just like Hanamichi did! There are also other menus available, including a Dragon Quest-themed burger, “Kurama’s Rose Whip Dessert Plate” from the Yu Yu Hakusho series, and even Houshin Engi-themed cocktail. Once we have satisfied our stomachs, Honey-chan and Bee-kun excitedly dragged everyone towards the exhibition area. The attendant warned us to keep our ticket until the end so we could exchange it for a free sticker at the exhibition exit! As we walked in, we were ushered towards a multimedia room where a short movie of Weekly Shounen Jump’s historic titles played, and then another one where we got to watch a short PV of Dragon Ball’s Goku and Frieza’s decisive battle. With that, we all proceeded to the opening section of the exhibition where one of the most legendary titles of Weekly Shounen Jump is displayed: Dragon Ball! A number of its very iconic moments were displayed, including manga panels of Goku’s anger in his battle with Frieza, as well as Goten and Trunks’ fusion. There was also a glass case with a selection of Dragon Ball merch that some of us might have grown up with!
All series that had been published in Weekly Shounen Jump in the 1990s period had, at the very least, a whole wall displaying several iconic manga moments that would make their fans feel very nostalgic. Titles that had anime adaptations also had TV screens attached on the wall, playing the opening sequence of the anime adaptation. Among these titles are Nube, Magical Taruruuto-kun, Kyuukyoku!! Hentai Kamen, Whistle!, Ninkuu, and the Hareruya series. Even the series that had only recently adapted as anime, Houshin Engi, had a screen of its new anime’s opening sequence. The more popular series, however, got to have a much more massive display. Just like Dragon Ball, which had an entire room dedicated to it, Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure’s series got entire walls decorated with life-sized panels of its characters as well as framed color illustrations. The noises both Honey-chan and Bee-kun made at the sight of it was hilarious! As we progressed, we also got to see the impressive displays for Yu Yu Hakusho series, which made some of us extremely nostalgic seeing the iconic manga panels of Kurama turning into his fox spirit self, Youko, or the ‘death’ of Kuwabara in the Dark Tournament. There was even a special PV on the screen that showed each of the main characters’ iconic moments in manga panels! Fans of Slam Dunk series would be beside themselves once they reach the Slam Dunk area—gigantic panels of the characters on entire walls, with the iconic opening song “Kimi ga Suki da to Sakebitai” playing in the background, and framed manga panels of each characters’ special moments right under them. It’s 2018, and we still get to see Rukawa’s good looks on an entire wall! Don’t miss the screen on the corner playing a short PV of the final match in the manga, either, because why would you miss a glimpse of Hanamichi and Rukawa’s high-five? It’s really what Slam Dunk deserves—after all, it was the series that brought the NBA fever sweeping all across Japan! Another series that got an entire room of memorabilia was, of course, Rurouni Kenshin, which was a classic title that got huge not only in Japan, but all over the world. There were wall tapestries of most of the main characters, and the if you paid close attention to the framed manga panels of the wall, you’d get to see the most iconic moments in the manga, from the beginning where Kenshin met Kaoru, his parting with Tomoe, to his battle with Seta Soujirou and Shishio Makoto, to the very end where he finally settled everything with Tomoe’s brother, Enishi, and the very last panel in the manga with Kenshin, Kaoru, and their child Kenji.
Those who loved Yu-Gi-Oh would also love the entire room dedicated to display Yu-Gi-Oh series! Along with the framed manga panels and illustrations, there were also a display of each character’s favorite cards in their decks. It’s so nostalgic to see both Kuriboh and Black Magician under a wall-sized illustration of Mutou Yuugi! You can also peer into a hidden screen shaped like a millennium puzzle to see silhouettes of Dark Magician and his apprentice, Dark Magician Girl. There were panels representing each important arcs—from Yuugi’s battle with Yami Bakura to his iconic, life-on-the-line battle with Jounouchi, and of course, the farewell scene with Yami Yuugi. The displays and memorabilia for each series were very impressive, but that’s not the only thing this exhibition offered. Halfway through the exhibition, you’d stumble into an impressive hall documenting the publishing process, collaborations, and projects that Weekly Shounen Jump achieved in the 1990s period. There were also screens playing interviews with three of the prominent mangaka at the time, including Slam Dunk’s Inoue Takehiko, and the famous man who brought us both Yu Yu Hakusho and Hunter x Hunter, Togashi Yoshihiro. In the very center of the room was an amazing setup of a Weekly Shounen Jump tree, with pages and pages of the magazine hanging off the ceiling. It really gave us a touching feeling of having been a part of Weekly Shounen Jump as readers! Towards the end of the exhibition, there was a special corner displaying titles published in the end of 1990s that would see us over to the 2000s period. These are the titles that were early works of mangaka who later shot to popularity after their hit titles in 2000s period: Konomi Takeshi, for example, who would be widely known by his Prince of Tennis series, wrote both COOL and RENTAL BODYGUARD. Kishimoto Masashi, known for Naruto, had his earlier work Karakuri up on display in this section as well. And of course, our favorite Oda Eiichirou who has brought us One Piece, with the One Piece Romance Dawn shot, and Kubo Tite, who brought us Bleach, with his Zombiepowder!

Final Thoughts

Finishing the exhibition was a complicated feeling of wanting to see more and looking forward to the next volume of the Weekly Shounen Jump exhibition, which would start on July and go on until September this year. It was a nostalgic walk through the 1990s, but also an exciting road of thinking about the series that would come after these hit titles, as well as remembering all the titles that are being published in Weekly Shounen Jump right now. What a ride this magazine has been on! It’s such a marvel how many hit titles it churned, and how many of those titles became the defining series of otaku culture in its period. If you’ll be visiting Japan this year, be sure to drop by the Weekly Shounen Jump exhibition and revisit the journey of your life as an anime and manga fan! Volume 2 of Weekly Shounen Jump exhibition will be held until June 17 2018, and the exhibition for Volume 3 will begin on July 17 2018. Volume 3 will definitely have a lot more hit titles that are currently still very popular, so be prepared for long lines and a literal war over entrance tickets!

1. Fushigi na Somera-chan (Magical Somera-chan)

Choboraunyopomi is the creator of Somera and company. Maybe you do not recognize the name, but they have done other works for television and manga. Somera-chan began as a four panel comic, pretty much in the same fashion as Doraemon. Anyway, the story presents us the daily life of Somera Nonomoto. She has a special ability called the Nonomoto Mahou-ken, which she inherited from her mother. Oh, so something runs in the family of Somera and Nobita, something special. Both stories are about two youngsters that are, well, far from ideal. They also have cute unconventional mascots. Also, their stories are very funny, although sometimes they can be too ridiculous or bizarre. Do you like sci-fi and trinkets? Just watch Fushigi na Somera-chan! This special episode is packed with extra cuteness.

2. Wasurenagumo (Li’l Spider Girl)

We have seen any type of strange creature as pet in anime (Go look for “How to Keep a Mummy” if you don’t believe me). In Wasurenagumo, we find out about the legend of a powerful spider who was defeated by a monk. In the present day, we see a shop which sells only historic books. The shopkeeper is Suzuri, and Mizuki is the granddaughter of the land owner. The shop is also the home of a cute spider demon that will bring her humans joy and adventures. This film is short but sweet, just like most of Doraemon’s adventures. In both stories, ordinary humans have to take care of a special pet that yes, makes their lives interesting… However, sometimes the relationship will not be easy and drama will follow. All in all, you can have a good laugh with both films. Also, it helps that they are recent, as animation quality is great in the two. If you like old stories about Japan combined with a modern point of view, you cannot miss Wasurenagumo.

3. Youkai Watch Movie 1: Tanjou no Himitsu da Nyan! (It’s the Secret of Birth, Meow!)

This series has become a success in recent years in Japan. Following the tradition of Doraemon, Pokemon, Digimon and other similar anime, Youkai Watch presents us a whole universe of cute friends. Only that this time, they are not monsters or robots: they are youkai! The protagonist of Youkai Watch is Keita Amano, the owner of the first Youkai Watch which enables him to see youkai and befriend them. In this movie, his watch is stolen by Youkai Kin and Gin. Will Keita and his youkai friends be able to recover it? You will have to watch the movie to find out! Lots of fun stories? Check. Cute co-protagonists that look like cats? Check. An anime film made especially for kids but that can be also enjoyed by adults? Check, too! Youkai Watch even has one robot cat youkai. If you like Doraemon because of the magic and the friendship, you will also love Youkai Watch. The adventures here are also endless, so you will have hours and hours of fun.

4. Shinryaku! Ika Musume (Squid Girl)

Beware, because the culture that has brought us such horrors like Godzilla or the Angels from Evangelion has outdone itself with… a squid. A squid girl who cooks the best squid ink spaghetti, to be more precise. Her mission is to punish the dirty humans for polluting the sea, as well as to conquer the Earth… whenever she can run away from the rough Aizawa sisters who own the seafood restaurant where she works, of course. A bit weird? Yes, Ika Musume has curious abilities, just like Doraemon. Is she as adorable as he is? Again, yes. Particularly in these specials, Ika Musume appears in all her Super Deformed glory. Although she is powerful on her own, she also learns about the human world and has adventures with her humans (the Aizawa sisters), again, just like Doraemon. If you want more comedy of the likes of Nobita and company but with female protagonists, this little squid is your option!

5. Keroro Gunsou Movie 4: Gekishin Dragon Warriors de Arimasu!

Another little one who came from outer space since a long time ago is Sargent Keroro. He came to Earth to invade us, although he himself does not know how he is gonna pull that one. Keroro never gives up, so he keeps trying while entertaining us and teaching us good morals on the way. In this movie, mysterious giants called dragon tails have appeared. Meanwhile, Keroro infiltrates de Hinata family house to prepare his world domination despite of the dragon tails menace. Be prepared to laugh at virtually everything! Keroro is a little comedic jewel just like Doraemon who is targeted to children. And well, that is why both characters have children sidekicks. Both anime also have been around for a long time. The main difference is that Doraemon is a good guy, while Keroro is a dark, more adult version of an adventure companion. That is why his adventures can get pretty suspenseful, while Doraemon’s extreme emotions have been dramatic and sad.

6. Gintama Movie 1: Shinyaku Benizakura-hen (Gintama: Benizakura arc - A New Retelling)

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="ANSB-9466" text="" url="" ]
[en][information_general item1 = "Episodes" content1="1" item2="Aired" content2="Apr 24, 2010" ][/en]
[es][information_general item1 = "Episodios" content1="___content1___" item2="Emisión" content2="___content2___" post_id=""][/es]

Warning: some content on this anime is not for children. Proceed with caution. This is an alternative telling of the Edo period in Japan, where the Earth was invaded by alien creatures called “Amanto”. The shogunate makes a pact with the aliens and the samurai go into decline. Now the only rogue samurai left with a wooden sword is Gintoki Sakata, who is forced to do odd jobs to sustain himself. In this movie, Shinpachi and Kagura are investigating a murder while Gintoki is trying to recover a sword called Benizakura. Gintama was adapted from a highly successful manga, just like Doraemon. We also have lots of comedy here, as well as interactions between humans and a different but intelligent form of life. There is friendship and a weird mascot called Elizabeth to fill in for the same role as Doraemon. The greatest difference is that Gintama is a series with an adult humor, so please do not watch it if you are still a kid. Wait until you can catch up all that doble sense!

Final Thoughts

Love it or hate it, Doraemon was the first contact with Japanese robots in manga or anime for many. Some might find him repetitive, we know that. However, as all that is good, Doraemon keeps coming back! He will always be there to remind us that there is a solution for everything if we have friends and if we have spirit for adventure. Even the smallest of children deserves a chance in life, just like Nobita did. As you can see, similar anime movies try to capture the joy, fun turns and woes of childhood too, but others push the humor to different places. In Japan, there is an anime for everything and for everyone, you can be sure of that. Which anime movies like Stand by Me Doraemon have you watched? Do not forget that we are open to all your comments and suggestions. See you soon!

Like so many others, I grew up with shows like Dragon Ball Z, Pokemon, and Sailor Moon; and it wasn't until much later that I knew that they were anime. After the initial wave of popular anime passed, I didn't actively seek out more anime; I only caught random shows that would come out like Naruto. It wasn't until I experienced a certain anime that I had come to be so obsessed the world of anime. The enjoyment I got from watching anime spread to buying and reading manga and then into collecting all sorts of anime merchandise all while spending more money than I care to admit. While coming up my favorite anime of all time, I considered many things, but the main two components were the quality of the show and how the show affected me. This may cause some anime to may be higher on my list than they would be if I simply judged them on the quality of the anime alone, but taking out the emotional attachment, I have to these series would be no fun. None of my friends have ever really been into anime outside of a few popular shows, so getting to write about all of these shows I enjoy will be a blast.

Naota Nandaba lives a typical and mundane life in the city of Mabase. Naota's life changed after being hit by a woman riding a Vespa named Haruko Haruhara. Haruko ends up taking residence in the Nandaba household, which is only the beginning of the strange happenings that start to befall Naota. After being hit with Haruko's guitar, Naota starts having strange intergalactic beings come out of his forehead. Now with aliens, government agents, and a war that will decide the fate of the universe all in Mabase, Naota's life has become anything but mundane. To say FLCL is a strange anime would be an understatement. The sheer absurdity of the plot is one of the things that makes the show great. On your first watch through of the show, it's easy to see how fantastic the animation, music, and action scenes are. The story, on the other hand, can't be fully appreciated until you've watched the show multiple times and are able to see everything that is happening. FLCL was the first anime that I saw that wasn't a shonen or fanservice filled show; this ultimately led me to branch off into other genres of anime, showing me just how the vast the world of anime could be.

4. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood takes place in an alternate history where alchemy has become a major part of life. The brothers Edward and Alphonse Elric, are alchemists that attempted human transmutation to bring their mother back to life and paid the ultimate price. Alphonse lost his entire body, while Edward lost his leg and then subsequently his arm in order to bond Alphonse's soul to a suit of armor. The story follows Edward as he becomes a state alchemist and together with Alphonse, they research the secrets of the philosopher's stone in hopes of getting their bodies back. With FLCL being the anime to get me to leave shounen anime behind, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood was the anime that made me come back to the genre. With a great combination of beautiful actions sequences and a deep emotional plot, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood shows how wonderful a shounen anime can be. While many similar shows seem to have their characters fighting with no real consequences, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood wasn't afraid to have serious injuries befall many of its characters and it even goes as far as to kill off many of its major characters. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood set the bar for me as to what an action shounen anime is and I'm still waiting for a show to come close to what Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood gave me.

On the first day of the new school year, Ryuuji bumps into Taiga Aisaka, a girl who's feisty nature and small size has earned her the nickname “Palmtop Tiger.” The meeting between the two ends with Ryuuji getting punched. With their relationship already off to a rough start, it gets worse after Taiga accidentally puts a love note in Ryuuji's bag, thinking it was the bag of Ryuuji's friend Kitamura. After a small scuffle between the two, Ryuuji tells Taiga about his crush on her friend Minori Kushieda. This leads to the two of them bonding over their unrequited love and forming a friendship with the purpose of helping each other out with their crushes. Toradora was the first anime that I watched that made me sad it was ending. For days after completing the series, I felt this overwhelming sadness and a sense of emptiness that the show was over. Despite eventually getting over this, I can never bring myself to finish the series whenever I rewatch it, always stopping right after the ski trip. Toradora is the pinnacle of what a romance story should be. The show doesn't try to trick you with the revelation that Taiga and Ryuji get together after spending the majority of the series trying to impress other people; instead, the focus is on following Taiga and Ryuji as they grow to learn more about themselves and each other, while also realizing what they want out of life and what love really is.

Yusuke Urameshi lives the life of a delinquent, getting into fights, skipping school, and only cares about himself. While skipping school one day, Yusuke does the unthinkable when he jumps in front of a car to save a little boy at the cost of his own life. After getting hit by the car, Yusuke is greeted by a girl name Botan, who tells Yusuke she is the pilot of the River Styx, that brings souls to the underworld to be judged. Yusuke's act of heroism was so far out of character for him, the heads of the underworld weren't prepared for Yusuke's death and hadn't decided where he would end up in the afterlife. Instead of making a quick decision, Koenma, son of the ruler of the underworld, offers Yusuke a second chance at life. After a series of trials, Yusuke is brought back to life and Konema decides to have Yusuke work as a spirit detective. As a spirit detective, Yusuke is able to put all of his years as a delinquent to use, as he fights against the various demons that end up finding themselves on earth. Even though Yu Yu Hakusho turned 25 years old this year, it still holds up incredibly well. With a dark plot, lots of action, and lot of fantastic character development, Yu Yu Hakusho stood out among the anime of its time. Many of the characters in this show felt relatable, especially early on in the series, with all the emotional scenes dealing with some serious topics like death. Due to Yu Yu Hakusho being one of the first mainstream anime released in America, the nostalgia factor can't be denied when it comes to my feelings for this show. Despite this, Yu Yu Hakusho is still able to stand out when shown to newcomers even today and would be one of my recommendations for anybody looking to get into anime.

1. Rurouni Kenshin

Kenshin Himura is a wandering samurai that has been traveling since the beginning of the Meiji era. After arriving in Tokyo, Kenshin runs into a young woman named Kaoru Kamiya, who is tracking down a man who claims to be the Hitokiri Battosai, and has been tarnishing the name of Kaoru's dojo. After Kaoru is captured by the man claiming to be the Battosai, Gohei Hiruma, it is revealed that Gohei was just an impostor and Kenshin is the real Battosai who vowed to never kill again. Using his reverse-blade sword, Kenshin saves Kaoru and prepares to set out once again. After deciding she doesn't care about Kenshin's past, Kaoru offers to let Kenshin stay at her dojo and being a new life not as the Battosai or as a wanderer, but as the peaceful and caring Kenshin Himura. While I don't believe Rurouni Kenshin is objectively the greatest anime ever, it means more to me than any anime I have ever seen. Many people experienced Rurouni Kenshin during its run on Toonami in the early 2000's, but I wasn't introduced to Rurouni Kenshin until late 2007. At that point in my life, the only anime related media I was consuming was Pokemon related, but after taking part in a conversation with my brother and our friend about Rurouni Kenshin, I wanted to know what they were talking about and found the episodes online. What ensued was a 94 semi binge that would forever change my life. Rurouni Kenshin brought me back into the world of anime that I had left behind, with smooth action sequences, great characters, and a story that went from being an episodic adventure to a serious battle against one of my favorite villains in any anime. Sometimes I question whether the show should be my favorite of all time, but all it takes is watching the opening for me to experience the feelings I have for Rurouni Kenshin all over again.

Final Thoughts

I can't express how much joy I got out of talking about my favorite anime of all time. Through writing my list and looking at many other people discussing their favorite anime it made me think about how the world of anime is truly amazing. Something as simple as anime has stayed around for years bringing all sorts of people together. With so many genres and stories, there is something for everybody and nobody's anime experience will be the same.

Dragon Ball Super Introduction and Story

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="crunchyroll" url="http://www.crunchyroll.com/dragon-ball-super/episode-125-with-imposing-presence-god-of-destruction-toppo-descends-760339" ]

After defeating Majin Buu, the world is once again at peace and unfortunately, saving the world doesn’t pay the bills so Goku finds work as a tractor driver. However, he can easily quit his job since Mr. Satan rightfully gives him 100 million Zeni and in turn, Goku gives Chi-Chi the money so he can concentrate on training full-time at King Kai’s. After that is established, the series offers a retelling of the Battle of the Gods and Resurrection of F movies to fit into the narrative of the series. Once that’s over, it progresses into its own original and exciting story arcs. With the re-introduction of Beerus and Whis, come new universes and opponents to face not just for the sake of saving the multiverse, but looking for the ultimate challenge. But before Goku and his gang can save their universe, they also reunite with the Future Trunks from a dystopian future that has been conquered by an evil Goku, Goku Black. So if fans feel if GT wasn’t the real follow up to Dragon Ball Z that they were looking for, the Super is a much better alternative.

What We Liked About Dragon Ball Super?

With the name Dragon Ball, viewers are promised the most destructive and yet imaginative action sequences they are ever going to see. Not only can viewers get a kick out of the fighting, they can also enjoy some of the new developments that a select number of the cast members get, and some episodes take us down memory lane as it ties up some loose ends from Dragon Ball Z. If you remember the beginning of the Buu Saga, Vegeta promises Trunks if he could land a clean hit on him, he’d take him to an amusement park, and there is one episode of Super dedicated to keeping that promise. A little later, Gohan temporarily returns to assume the role of the Great Saiyaman. The fact that Super returns to some of the small things from both Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z is a great treat for dedicated viewers, or encourage newer viewers to see both the original Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z. Last, a good portion of the original voice cast from both the Japanese version and the Funimation dub come back to voice our heroes and villains so fans can come into this series like it never ended.

Discussion Time

For those that love Dragon Ball Z, Super not only offers high-octane action but also some new power-ups and fresh characters. Even if viewers have no prior exposure to Dragon Ball Z, they can still get into this series if they only want to watch it for the action. As for understanding the story, it does help if you have seen at least the Freeza and Android sagas of Dragon Ball Z to get a better idea of who some of the featured characters are when it retells Resurrection of F and when Future Trunks comes in, but other than that, previous viewings of Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z are not conditionally required to enjoy Super. But like its respective predecessor, it does take some time to warm up to. In the initial episodes, the animation quality has been subjected to ridicule and some of its story arcs still have pacing issues. Last, some of its music doesn’t measure up to the previous series (even including GT).

Why You Should Watch Dragon Ball Super

1. The Best Action You Can Ever See

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="crunchyroll" url="http://www.crunchyroll.com/dragon-ball-super/episode-125-with-imposing-presence-god-of-destruction-toppo-descends-760339" ]

When anime fans hear Dragon Ball, the first thing they think is its creative action sequences (as well as intense screaming, toilet seat sitting position charge ups, and the craziest hairdos you’ll ever see), and this installment lives up to its reputation. As we further discuss some of the newer features to this series, they help contribute to new creative elements to the action in both a physical and mental sense. While a good majority of DC and Marvel comic stories are capable of the level Dragon Ball has to offer, Dragon Ball has the balls and imagination to demonstrate the destructive effects their punches have. As opposed to how an American superhero knocks out his rival like how Muhammad Ali knocked out Sonny Liston, in Dragon Ball, the effect of a punch (whether it cleanly lands or collides with an opponent’s fist) can cause a sonic boom, a crater, level a mountain, or any other environmental destruction you can think of to demonstrate how powerful these characters are. This demonstration offers a sense of danger and excitement, and not many action titles around the world have ever delivered what Dragon Ball has done for nearly 35 years. This time, when Goku fights Beerus, it can get to a point if their fight goes into deep waters, the impact of their hits could cause a ripple in the universe. While it is over the top, it is still imaginative and exciting, and that is why Dragon Ball Z, and in turn, Super, has won its dedicated fanbase.

2. New Power-Ups

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="crunchyroll" url="http://www.crunchyroll.com/dragon-ball-super/episode-116-the-sign-of-a-comeback-ultra-instincts-huge-explosion-753991" ]

Throughout the duration of Dragon Ball Z, Goku and the rest of the remaining Saiyans eventually achieve three levels of Super Saiyan, and Super introduces three new forms for Goku. In his first fight with Beerus, he achieves Super Saiyan God, where he needs the accumulative power of other Saiyans and can only work temporarily. Then when he gets his rematch with Freeza (who achieves a new golden power-up transformation), he and Vegeta achieve Super Saiyan Blue. In the Zamasu Story Arc, he can also use his old Kaioken power up while in Super Saiyan Blue form. In the final story arc, he discovers a new transformation power up, Ultra Instinct, which you can easily compare to Ryoma’s Muga no Kyochi from Prince of Tennis if you have any familiarity with that series. Thanks to Zamasu’s possession of his body, Goku indirectly gets another Super Saiyan power up, Super Saiyan Rose, where his hair turns pink as opposed to gold or blue due to Zamasu being a god. In addition, fusion makes a comeback and is better than ever now that Vegetto can also achieve Super Saiyan Blue. Last, the newly introduced Saiyans from Universe 6 are also taught to go Super Saiyan and one new character, Kale, can assume a form that makes her resemble Brolly from the old DBZ movies.

3. New and Exciting Characters

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="crunchyroll" url="http://www.crunchyroll.com/dragon-ball-super/episode-124-the-fiercely-overwhelming-assault-gohans-last-stand-760337" ]

While many of our heroes (and villains) return in this series, they once again combat and befriend some new characters. Returning from the Battle of the Gods movie, we have Beerus and Whis. After the series ends that recap, Beerus, despite being a God of Destruction, becomes a passive ally to our heroes and his attendant, Whis, becomes Goku and Vegeta’s newest trainer. Then when Beerus is introduced, the fans get to learn there are other universes out there that have their own God of Destructions and attendants like Whis, and they are all siblings. One notable sibling of Beerus is Shampa, the God of Destruction of Universe 6, and his attendant Vados happens to be Whis’ sister. His residing universe also has Saiyans, Namekians, and its equivalent to Freeza, Frost, who keeps his darker personality a secret as opposed to Freeza who is more openly destructive. In further addition, Super also introduces the new higher power being hierarchy. While Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z introduced us to Kamis, Kaioh, and Kaioshins, Super introduces us to the boss of all gods, Zen-Oh, meaning "ruling of all". Despite his appearance, even Beerus, a God of Destruction, trembles in his presence. Then when the series gets into the final tournament arc, the cast expands to characters who are spoofs of the magical girl genre (even parodying the time-consuming transformations and how enemies can exploit them), tokusatsu, mech, horror, and so on. A good percentage of these new characters are given backgrounds and personalities for viewers to connect but comes with its own baggage which we’ll get in relation to why you should skip this series.

Why You Should Skip Dragon Ball Super

1. It Takes Time To Get Into

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="crunchyroll" url="http://www.crunchyroll.com/dragon-ball-super/episode-105-a-desperate-battle-master-roshis-sacrifice-741903" ]

We aren’t saying you should ultimately skip the series, but there are some parts that you can just skip with little to no consequences because they do get time-consuming. For starters, just skip the first 27 episodes because you can easily watch a bulk of what happens in the Battle of the Gods and Resurrection of F. After watching those movies, start from episode 28 and you’re good to go. On the other the hand, the series does highlight how Goku and Vegeta get to train with Whis shortly before it re-introduces Freeza. As we all know, the concept of time between real life and within the Dragon Ball universe isn’t entirely new or unique. A whole 22-minute episode can represent anywhere between 1-120 minutes in the world of Dragon Ball. The original Freeza saga was a notorious violator of this, and the final story arc of Super of the multiverse royal rumble is the newest offender. As opposed to the Freeza Saga where it was 2 vs. 2, it is easy for the last story arc of Super to get away with this pacing because there are nearly 100 combatants simultaneously fighting each other.

2. The Initial Animation

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="crunchyroll" url="http://www.crunchyroll.com/dragon-ball-super/episode-93-youre-the-tenth-warrior-goku-goes-to-see-frieza-733835" ]

As seen on the Internet, episode 5 was subjected to ridicule. Google search the image and you’ll probably think it was some elementary kids project for his flash animation class. This is very inexcusable not because of the Dragon Ball brand name, but because Toei could have just easily used existing footage from the Battle of the Gods movie to retell Goku’s fight with Beerus on King Kai’s planet. According to some reports, the quality is improved in the Bluray and DVD releases so fans are welcome to check that out. But by the time the series progresses into the Zamasu Story arc, the animation is immensely improved and when you get to the end, you’ll forget about the bad quality in the debut episodes.

3. The Soundtrack is Rather Weak

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="crunchyroll" url="http://www.crunchyroll.com/dragon-ball-super/episode-90-see-the-wall-that-must-be-passed-goku-vs-gohan-733829" ]

While the recaps at the start of each episode use an instrumental version of Cha-La Head-Cha-La from the original DBZ series, the actual version isn’t used at all in the series. Overall, the soundtrack of Super isn’t as strong as its predecessors. The opening and ending songs feel very generic and not once do we get a Hironobu Kageyama song. There are no memorable tracks in Super that are to the level of Spirit vs. Spirit, the song in the Japanese version when Gohan first turns Super Saiyan 2, and Super’s music doesn’t capture the romanticism or innocence the way Dan Dan Kokoro Hikareteku, the theme song of Dragon Ball GT does. Say what you want about GT, but that series had a solid soundtrack and Super just doesn’t have that. In addition to the opening and ending themes, the background music of Super doesn’t feel as memorable or as intense as the soundtrack from the original DBZ series such as the background track when Goku turns Super Saiyan for the first time, or the moment when Goku defeated Buu. Dragon Ball Super just seems to have a very big hole open without the presence of Hironobu Kageyama and the original DBZ composer, Shunsuke Kikuchi.

Final Thoughts

Despite the predictable outcome of the last story arc, it wasn’t about the destination, but the journey to get there. Sure it had its slow moments, but it was full of memorable highlights. The series ends with a conclusion to a story arc, it still has so much potential. Some fans know Goku has a score to settle with Beerus, and there are still a good number of loose ends that we need to see tied up. For example, will we get to see the universes that were too strong to participate in the last battle? Will Goku and company fight them, too? With the way it ends, it creates more curiosity than closure so we are positive that there will be more Dragon Ball coming. Last, we would like to dedicate this review to Hiromi Tsuru, the voice of Bulma. Her character has always played a huge part in the series due to her initial role of bringing Goku out into the real world as they went on their first adventure to find the Dragon Balls. She always captured the character’s intelligence and spunk. In addition to Bulma, Tsuru has created a great legacy with her career that includes the voices of Madoka in Kimagure Orange Road, Ukyo in Ranma ½, and Mikami in Ghost Sweeper Mikami. Without her, Dragon Ball is never going to be the same, and we are positive all of us miss her.
