Uchi no Maid ga Uzasugiru! Introduction

Takanashi Misha is a half-Russian half-Japanese elementary school girl who is still mourning the loss of her mother and living with her Japanese step-father whom she refers to by his first name, Yasuhiro. Since Yasuhiro works so much, he has employed Kamoi Tsubame, a former JSDF officer, to work as the housekeeper. Tsubame may seem a bit like a strict military officer, but she’s a devoted lolicon who dreams of marrying Misha who wants nothing to do with Tsubame!

Why You Should Watch Uchi no Maid ga Uzasugiru!
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="crunchyroll" url="https://www.crunchyroll.com/uzamaid" ]

1. Lolicon Comedy

If you love anime with lolicon humor like Ro-Kyu-Bu! or Softenni, with a mostly all girl cast, you’ll love Uchi no Maid ga Uzasugiru! Tsubame practically gushes over Misha and dreams of marrying her so often times, she imagines that whatever good she does for Misha will result in Misha wanting to marry her and start planning their ceremony. Meanwhile, Misha wants nothing more than to get rid of Tsubame and thinks the worst of her so the two characters really contrast making a great comedy. Plus, Tsubame constantly says how she only loves girls before they have their periods!

2. Characters

Honestly, the best part of Uchi no Maid ga Uzasugiru! has to be the characters. Our favorite has to be Tsubame who is an absolutely extreme lolicon—considering she only likes girls before they’ve had their first menstrual cycle—and a former officer in the JSDF. You’d never imagine that with her demeanor, minus the eye patch. Then there’s Misha who’s adorable in so many ways and dreams of being a hikikomori more or less. Plus there are a few other characters who are a great laugh like the masochist Midori and the little pet ferret and hamsters of Misha’s! The cast absolutely makes Uchi no Maid ga Uzasugiru! a great comedy anime to watch.

Why You Should Skip Uchi no Maid ga Uzasugiru!

1. Lolicon Humor

If you are absolutely against lolicon and loli humor, you will not find this anime funny considering it completely makes a big joke out of lolicon. There’s also a few other jokes of other sexual fetishes (like masochists) that are joked around about, and if you are against all of the above, Uchi no Maid ga Uzasugiru! is just not for you.

Uchi no Maid ga Uzasugiru! is a great comedy anime for many, but it might not be for everyone depending on what you look for in an anime. It still has plenty of good points, but we know that there’s no one size fits all anime. Do you agree with our assessment or do you have a few things you want to point out as well? If you have any comments about our review, please feel free to share your thoughts down below!

Tips for Getting into One Piece

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="2018CL-7" text="" url="" ]

One Piece is an odd beast in this day and age. There are series like Hajime no Ippo and Detective Conan that have been running as long or longer than One Piece, but none have remained so interconnected and narratively dense. What’s even crazier is that the series is still growing, as more and more people are realizing just how grand the story of One Piece really is. But, hey, let’s also face it… it’s nearly 1000 chapters of manga, and nearly 900 anime episodes. No one has time for that anymore. But, hey, even in Japan, kids are jumping in just fine compared to Western audiences. So if you’re curious about what the series is like, or you’re just really behind, we’ve got some tips for getting into One Piece.

Play the Games

There’s a weird trend with One Piece games where most of them just recount the entire plot of One Piece. While at first, you might think “Why would they do that when the anime and manga exist?”, there’s an advantage to this. Weirdly, playing a 30-40 hour game is actually much less time than it would take to invest in the story otherwise! These games exist for potential fans to get the gist of the story before jumping into the weekly chapters. We recommend checking out the mobile game One Piece: Treasure Cruise. It’s free to play and can easily be blown through in a few hours while it summarizes the plot of the series. If you’re looking for something more substantial, Pirate Warriors 3 for Steam, PS4, and Switch is a solid choice. It’s one of the best Musou titles out there and should catch you up to speed with more pizazz than the mobile game could.

Don’t Be Afraid to Skip Arcs

Most people are going to tell you that the One Piece experience requires you to get through it from start to finish. While this is the best experience, it is also just not practical. Author Oda Eiichiro writes One Piece with young children in mind, so most story arcs tend to be written with being a solid beginning, middle, and end in mind even if you don’t know every detail. If you’re just starting out, we recommend that after you read the first chapter, skip ahead to the Baratie Arc where Sanji is introduced. Many fans consider this to be where you start getting the first real hints at the plot due to the introduction of the Shichibukai. Better yet, this arc leads right into Arlong Park, which is the first “true” One Piece arc. This is the arc where you will be able to tell if One Piece is going to be the series for you. Even if you don’t quite know who Zoro, Usopp, and Nami are, you’ll get a pretty decent sense of their characters in these arcs. Otherwise, if you’re still not sure after reading Arlong Park, just skip all the way ahead to Alabasta, which is when the plot of One Piece really begins.

Take Advantage of Weekly Shonen Jump’s Digital Deal

Of course, what may be even more inconvenient than the time cost is the actual monetary cost. The anime is easy enough to just watch on Crunchyroll, but it just takes up so much time. The manga is more practical and timely to catch up with, but buying it is just so expensive. You may not be lucky enough to live near a library that happens to keep the entire series in stock. Thankfully, if you live in the US, Weekly Shonen Jump just completely revised their policy. In addition to letting you read new chapters for free for the first 3 weeks, you can pay $2 a month to also get the entire Shonen Jump backlog! This removes a lot of clutter on your bookshelf and will save you a lot of money in the long run.

Hopefully, with these tips, you’ll feel a little less intimidated by the gargantuan task that is getting caught up with One Piece. Even if you’ve dabbled in the series before, some of these may prove useful for you too! Do you have your own tips for checking out One Piece? Please, let us know in the comments below!

Why Gurazeni is Underrated

The CG looks like it comes straight out of an early PS2 game. The narrative heavily relies on internal monologues tediously explaining every single technical term or management concept related to baseball. The budget is so low that the ending didn’t even have a proper animation sequence until the second season, where they just reused the song but set it to some dancing animation rather than an animation loop of a girl sitting on a hill; a character you don’t even meet until the last episode of the first season. Gurazeni is not going to start winning any awards any time soon. This is a series that has so many technical issues at a fundamental level that it’s easy to see why it’s been so panned critically. The fact that it even got licensed to air on Crunchyroll is nothing short of baffling. But yet… there’s just something about the series that makes the hate feel unjustified. We thought we’d make a case for Gurazeni and explain why there’s much more to it than meets the eye.

The Truly Average Hero

Plenty of anime try to position their heroes as being “average” to better fulfill a power fantasy for the viewer. They are meek, uninteresting people who believe they have no talent but discover through freak chance that they have a strange talent for a sport, which leads them to become one of the best players in all of Japan. The fact that they are actually an average person is inconsequential to the plot: it is only there to make the reader feel empathetic. And that’s what’s so interesting about Natsunosuke Bonda. He’s not the star of his team. He’s just a relief pitcher on the Spiders, a national level pro team. Compared to the average person, he is obviously quite talented, but in comparison to the rest of the league? He barely stands out. This creates a unique perspective for the series, as Bonda’s goals aren’t for glory, but survival. He’s not the kind of player who has a cult of personality or the sheer talent to survive normally in the big leagues. When he stops being useful, that’s the end of his baseball career and the end of living the good life.

Unidealized View of Sports

One of the defining episodes of Gurazeni comes from when the well-known batter of an opposing team has his contract up in the air. The management actually wants to retire him because he’s so expensive and he’s been in a bit of a slump, but he’s so ingrained in the culture of the team that they just can’t outright deprive him of a contract. They wait until the next game and hope that his slump continues when he goes up against Bonda, and when he fails to even hit against a no-name like him, that might convince the batter to retire. Stories like these are simply just not being told in anime these days. Sports anime, in particular, are so focused on tales of the importance of discovering a passion that the reality of the sport goes ignored. Yet Gurazeni doesn’t just not ignore it, it embraces it as the main driving point of the plot. Gurazeni is, ultimately, a story of capitalism and how it completely drives our culture for better and worse, and baseball is just the window dressing to show how nothing is sacred.

We hope that, with this defense, you may be more inclined to throw Gurazeni on your queue. It’s not a series for everyone, but it’s a fascinating character study and a truly unique story that’s unlike anything else that’s come out recently. It shouldn’t just go completely ignored as it has been. Are you one of the 37 people outside of Japan who has actually watched Gurazeni? Well, please, don’t be shy! Top 10 Anime About Mental Health [Best Recommendations]

When it comes to the portrayal of mental health in film or tv; representation or discussion of such a topic can at times be stigmatizing, painting an ill-informed or sensationalized image of what we think about mental illness or our mental health in general. With a medium as expressive and vibrant as anime, there are opportunities to either do real harm when it comes to the portrayal of mental health or develop intriguing and conscious narratives that will leave audience members more conscious of their own personal wellbeing and the wellbeing of their friends, family, and strangers. When putting together a list of anime which discuss or allude to themes of mental health, we considered the immediate importance which mental health plays in the plot of the show, how complex is the representation of characters who are struggling with their mental health, and to a lesser degree, how well the animation style, genre, music, and other technical elements work to complement the narrative.

10. Psycho-Pass

Around 200 years into a future Japan, an almost utopic law and order is kept under the watchful guardianship of the Sybil system. An incredibly complex algorithm-driven computer program which seeks to identify the mental stability of Japan’s citizens. Assessing for any risk of violent or latent criminal tendencies. Citizens whose “Psycho-Pass” score is shown to pose a risk will be arrested and labeled a latent criminal before any crime can be committed. Among the many citizens who benefit from the security this rule of law provides, is the intelligent Akane Tsunemori, a young woman who recently joins the police force to help ensure the peace and uncover crimes, even if that means partnering with a latent criminal, Enforcer Shinya Kougami. The more they work together, the more they uncover the truth about this mysterious system. From Production I.G., comes an exhilarating sci-fi, mystery, thriller anime that challenges perceptions of powerful emotions and what society does when turning to criminalize those who are not a part of designated mental “norms”. In essence, this anime makes it to the list not simply because the topic of mental health is embedded in the justice system which governs the world, but manages to start an interesting conversation particularly around stigma associated with mental illness.

9. Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="ANSB-6415" text="" url="" ]
[en][information_general item1 = "Episodes" content1="64" item2="Aired" content2="April 2009 – July 2010" post_id=""][/en]

There is no rule more crucial in the world of alchemy than the law of equivalent exchange, “to obtain something, something of equal importance must be lost”. To break such a rule would mean to pay a terrible price. Two young brothers, Edward and Alfonse Elric, attempted to bring their deceased mother back into the living world through the use of alchemy. In their desperation, they failed to consider the consequences resulting in Edward losing his arm and leg; Alfonse losing everything but his soul. This leads them to journey to become official state alchemists for the military so that they have access to the capital and research they need to find the answers to restoring their bodies. Studio Bones brings an anime that comes layered with various moments of great loss. Be it that of a mother, father, soldier, or people. Beyond this, it shows the individual ways people have of grieving when such a loss occurs. For the Elric brothers, they attempt to defy the laws of nature and alchemy to bring their mom back. For the many who are impacted by war in the series, a variety of emotions such as anger, hatred, and sadness are expressed when that which is precious is taken from them. If there is one thing that FMAB does well, it is to not paint any two characters’ experiences of grief or tragedy with the same brush.

8. Naruto

Naruto is an orphan living in the hidden leaf village. He has spent his whole childhood growing up in the village alone. Unbeknownst to him, a fox spirit responsible for the destruction of the village twelve years prior, including the death of his parents, is sealed inside him, resulting in him being shunned by the community. Naruto struggled through Ninja Academy where he worked to graduate to become a Genin all in the hopes of working to eventually become the Hokage, the leader, of the whole village so that he will finally be seen in a positive light by the community. Now a Genin, Naruto is a part of Team 7 with Kakashi-sensei, teammates Sasuke Uchiha and Sakura Haruno. Will he be able to make his goals come true? What makes Naruto, as a character, so special is not simply his sad backstory, which many heroic figures in tales tend to have, but his reaction to that tragedy and isolation in his life. Growing up within a community that hates you for an unknown reason can certainly be enough for someone to give-up or become dispirited. Yet in spite of this experience, Naruto aims to try his best and become the Hokage, he maintains a mindset that allows him to get through difficult moments and seemingly impossible battles yet still stay true to himself and his values. He has a “will of fire” as the Hokage would put it.

Kakeru is an amazing runner, but his talent and social ineptitude tend to put a barrier between him and anyone he is on a team with. It was this barrier that led to him leaving track altogether. Low on money, he runs away from a store clerk after snagging some food for dinner. During the chase, he bumps into a young man on his bike named Haiji, a student at Kansei University just like him. Haiji discovers the situation that Kakeru is in and invites him to become a member of his dorm with other guys from the university. Kakeru soon discovers that Haiji’s motive for inviting him to stay at the dorm was to have the dorm compete as the university’s track team in one of the most challenging runs in Japan, Hakone Ekiden. Can this team of amateurs pull themselves together to make the impossible possible? The various team members at Kansei University’s track team come from various backgrounds, all with their own individual lives and struggles such as: seeking a good job, trying to maintain a relationship with someone, quitting smoking, or just getting into shape. The track team brings them all together and shows them the benefit that running as an exercise and sport can have on one’s physical and mental wellbeing. We would be remis if we left an anime that highlights this important fact, off the list.

6. Violet Evergarden

Among the weapons of war used between nations, none are more surprising than that of a young girl named Violet, who was brought up as a tool of destruction. Once the long war was over, Violet was left with terrible memories with her only comfort being the final words of the commander who gave her a name, yet she struggles with her inability to grasp the words’ meaning. A friend of the commander, Claudia Hodgins employs her as an Auto-Memory Doll at his company CH Postal Service Company, where she is tasked with writing letters for strangers, even though she still struggles with fully grasping the emotions and wishes that are shared with her. With her new life beginning, can she learn to be more than simply a tool and grow to understand these emotions and words expressed to her? Mental health is not simply about the presence of overwhelming emotion or feeling but also about our ability to connect with the words and emotions of others, how it affects us and fuels us. In Violet’s story, we see her emerge from this dark past and struggle with connecting with other people on an emotional level, creating a seeming distance between her and others. A fact which Violet is not oblivious to. The intricate importance which the show places on the importance of human connection earns it a spot on the list.

Aatia Kaizaki is an unemployed and down on his luck, 27-year-old who after leaving his first lucrative job after only a couple of months, is left with trying to earn some money from part-time jobs; all the while bombing interviews and pretending to be employed when around his friends. Considered a failure by those in his life, Aatia’s fortune takes a turn for the strange when he encounters a man, Ryou Yoake, who introduces himself as an employee at the ReLIFE Research Institute, a company which seeks to rehabilitate the recluse and those who are not employed. Ryou offers a strange pill that will turn him into a younger high school version of himself for one year. Upon successful completion of the experiment, he would be offered employment and be able to turn his life around. Can such a thing be possible and if so will Aatia succeed in this experiment? One thing that can negatively affect our mental health is our own negative perception of our self, our self-doubt, and sense of failure. For Aatia, this perception is fueled by the great expectations which he and society as a whole place on him to be a positive working member of society, something that he shares with the next show on the list. Yet despite this sense of failure and struggle to secure employment, he stays true to himself and his values even when placed in various difficult scenarios. ReLIFE has us exploring more deeply what factors contribute to defining our self-worth as individuals and how that ultimately affects us.

A Hikikomori is a term to describe an individual who is considered a shut-in and a NEET(not pursuing education, employment, or training), Tatsuhiro Satou just so happens to be such an individual. He has done all he can to shut himself off from the world outside his tiny apartment, driven to seclusion by the conspiracy theories in his head. Having no formal education beyond high school, no real ability to socialize, there appears to him to be no clear path until he encounters Misaki Nakahara, a quirky young woman who wants to help Tatsuhiro live again. Much like in the anime above, we have a protagonist who does not appear to be meeting the expectations of society, yet the thing that separates the protagonist of Welcome to the NHK from ReLIFE is the severity of Tatsuhiro’s situation. Showing extreme anxiety upon contact with people and the external world with conspiracy theories continuing to fuel his reclusiveness, Tasuhiro is not in a good place when we first encounter him at the beginning of the anime. Welcome to the NHK creates a journey out of the everyday things we take for granted even though it’s animation can at times cause more fear than understanding for the audience.

Moritaka Mashiro dreamed of nothing more than becoming a mangaka as talented as his uncle. Yet this dreamed soon died the day his uncle passed away from overwork when Moritaka was still a small child. It was a dream his family was glad he gave up so that he would not end up like his uncle. Yet many years later in middle school, the incredibly bright Akito Takagi declared his dream of becoming a great writer of manga and sought Moritaka’s help as an artist, to make his and Moritaka’s old dream, a reality. Apprehensive at first, Moritaka agreed and begun on a quest with Akito to achieve their dreams while doing all he can to keep a promise to crush. The creators of Death Note bring an anime that highlights the highs and lows of a career as a mangaka. The anime carries throughout its episodes, this incessant need of the protagonists to succeed and to push themselves harder and further than ever before if they wish to succeed in the industry. Yet underlying all of this, is the consequences of overwork and stress as a result of one’s job. Whether it is a simple reflection of reality in the industry or simply aiming to give viewers an important lesson, Bakuman. Highlights the need for a proper work-life balance.

The creators of Honey & Clover bring a vividly astounding portrait of one young man’s journey of self-reflection and discovery. What separates March Comes in Like a Lion from others on the list, is how immersive the inner-monologue of Rei Kiriyama is, combined with the animation style, it creates an experience that allows the audience to dive deep into the storm that is Rei’s emotions. These stem from his recollection of his harmful past, his seeming depression, and the anxiety he has for his career and the future. Through its animation style, it also exhibits the literal light that can be brought into someone’s life by the supportive presence of others.

A sophomore named Naho Takamiya finds a mysterious envelop that appears to carry letters from herself 10-years into the future in her mail. Initially skeptical, the contents of the letters seem to mirror what is happening in reality and thus begins this strange adventure. The letters speak often about a fellow student named Kakeru Naruse who, unbeknownst to her, is struggling in his life. What does her future-self hope to achieve and can Naho succeed in the seemingly self-appointed quest from the future? Sometimes the biggest struggles a person will go through, are silent in nature. They can be hard to notice by our friends or family, yet still, support can be greatly needed. Orange makes it to the top of this list for illustrating the important difference that a supportive network of friends can have for someone who is struggling with their mental health. Orange creatively utilizes fantastical elements, such as letters from the future, to drive a narrative of support and hope for the characters involved.

Dakaretai Otoko 1-i ni Odosarete Imasu. Introduction and Story

Show business may be a tough and unforgiving world, but Saijou Takato makes it look easy. After 20 years in the business scoring various commercial appearances and lead roles in dramas, there’s no one who doesn’t know his name and face. In fact, for 5 years in a row, he’s voted as “The Man I Most Want to Hold Me”. Year 6 comes by and someone else takes his spot. This man is none other than up-and-coming Azumaya Junta. The most frustrating thing is that instead of being a proper enemy, Junta is obsessed with Takato… how is Takato supposed to fight Junta for first place when he’s too preoccupied fighting Junta off? Dakaretai Otoko 1-i ni Odosarete Imasu. has a great mix of cute moments and sexy moments between Takato and his ‘pervy angel’.

[ad_middle class="mt40"]
Why You Should Watch Dakaretai Otoko 1-i ni Odosarete Imasu.

1. You love BL

Most likely, if this title caught your eye, this is why. Two hot men in the entertainment industry that bang every day, what’s not to love? Takato and Junta (or as Takato calls him, Chunta) also have an interesting relationship as far as BL couples go. Takato is a tsundere with a big ego but he’s willing to be honest with his feelings more readily and at least acknowledges he loves sex with Junta. Junta is a super sweet puppy but he has a surprising calculating and cruel side when it comes to people who hurt Takato. It’s also refreshing to see the more loving and honest one doing most of the hunting! He’s not known as the perverted angel for nothing! If you liked Love Stage, there are a lot of similarities and it’s definitely worth a watch, especially if you like older adult men.

2. There’s a good bit of action without it being the only good part

Usually, if there’s bedtime action, character development suffers. There are a range of varied and interesting characters that exist as more than just romantic rivals and help flesh out our main guys as more than just gay lovers. We love seeing Takato’s misty eyes in the bedroom, but we also love seeing his commanding aura on stage! With Junta’s insatiable sex-drive when it comes to Takato, every episode has at least an implied sex scene even if it’s not super long or detailed. It’s enough to see Junta breaking things and steam coming out of his nose as he chases his reluctant partner to give you an idea of how vigorously he ravishes Takato.

3. Takato’s sexy-time faces will send you over the edge

Sexy expressions aren’t anything new to yaoi anime but WOW there’s something special about Takato’s. Maybe it’s the contrast between his usual in-control stoic look and his overwhelmed-with-ecstasy expressions that make it so appealing. Whatever the case, from the blushing to his wide, tearful eyes, you can see why Junta just can’t keep his hands off!

Why You Should Skip Dakaretai Otoko 1-i ni Odosarete Imasu.

1. You do not want to see two guys getting it on

Why did you even come here? Still, this is definitely a BL anime and there are hardly any women that even show up more than once or twice. If you’re looking for boobies you will be sorely disappointed. There are plenty of good straight up yuri anime out there, so if man-on-man isn’t your cup of tea, you’ll want to pass this up.

2. You prefer adventure to slice of life

While it is quite the grand life, it is still mostly about work and home life while balancing a relationship. Takato and Junta just so happen to be the hottest men in Japan and are rich and famous but there’s no big adventure or very deep storyline. Especially if you don’t much care about celebrities or what they have to go through to be successful, you might find the show boring.

3. Non-consensual sex/rape scenes are upsetting to you

While it may be less upsetting with someone as sweet and cute and loving as Junta being the pursuer instead of the grumpy guy who you can’t tell if it’s love or lust, it’s still pretty blatantly one-sided for a spell. Junta literally chases Takato and breaks things in his own home with a scary look in his eye while demanding they sleep together the first episode. Unfortunately for Takato, he also catches the eye of an unsavory character who gets him drunk to take advantage of him. This premise can be unsettling for some viewers.

Final Thoughts

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="crunchyroll" url="http://www.crunchyroll.com/dakaichi-im-being-harassed-by-the-sexiest-man-of-the-year-/episode-5-i-can-make-you-my-woman-777663" ]

Whether or not you’d consider Dakaretai Otoko 1-i ni Odosarete Imasu. to be your cup of tea, it’s certainly going to appeal to some people. It’s not going to win any awards for most original or innovative anime but what it aims to do it does well. It provides a more adult BL story for fans who want both sex and sweetness.

Honey-chan has heard a certain rumor. If said rumor is true, it could spark a revolution in the world of manga, the likes of which has never been seen before... The rumor states that people all over the world will soon be able to read the latest Japanese manga in English or Spanish, at exactly the same time as they’re released in Japan. A simultaneous release, and worldwide at that! What on earth is going on? Could such a dreamlike world really exist? Japan has always turned its back on us anime and manga fans; we’ve always been the ones chasing after them. Does this mean they’ve finally turned to look at us? Has senpai finally noticed us? This doki-doki... Could it be my kokoro? Unable to contain herself and needing to find out the truth, Honey-chan has come to the source of this rumor with Bombón in tow. Bursting through the doors of Shueisha’s headquarters in Japan, they’re here for an impromptu interview.

Luckily, an editor in chief for Shonen Jump+ willingly obliged: Mr. Shuhei Hosono❤
Hey, Bombón! We came here for an interview, you know? Don’t get distracted!
I know, I know! Don’t be so uptight. You need to learn to loosen up a little...
I’m pretty sure everyone knows all about it already, but I’d like to introduce Shonen Jump just in case. It’s a Japanese weekly manga magazine that serializes famous works such as Dragon Ball, Naruto, and One Piece. To give a more recent example of a Shonen Jump manga, there’s My Hero Academia. In other words, the magazine is like a fountain that keeps producing super interesting stuff! By keeping up with their releases, you’re bound to discover some amazing new manga. Then there’s Shonen Jump+, which is basically the Japanese website/app version of the magazine. You get it now? (Like a boss.) Oh, you already knew? Sorry, everyone!
You can be so annoying sometimes... That explanation was way too long-winded.
Anyway, let’s get back to why we’re here! Bombón and I are about to interview Mr. Hosono, so check it out!
Interview with Mr. Hosono
[gray-hex-decoration]
Is it true that the latest Japanese manga is now available to read in English and Spanish worldwide?
Yes, it’s true (laugh). To be more precise, it’s series from Shueisha’s Shonen Jump that are available. MANGA Plus by SHUEISHA was released today, January 28 2019. This application is available for download worldwide, with the exception of Japan, China, and South Korea, and although there are advertisements, all manga are accessible for free. The languages available are English and Spanish, and you can switch between the two within the app. Please note that Spanish will be released a little later, sometime after January 28. You can also read from your browser.
App store
Google play
I heard that new manga chapters will be released in English and Spanish at the same time they come out in Japan... Is that true?
Again that’s true (laugh). All current works will be released internationally at the same time as they are in Japan. The plan is to also make older series available in-app, so you can read completed works, usually one chapter every week. We want our fans to be able to enjoy all kinds of different new manga every day.
I see... So basically we’ll be able to read both old and new manga in the same way you might read the morning paper.
Exactly. Also, the first and last three chapters of manga released on the app will always be available to read. For those who don’t want to start reading a series midway through, we provide a link that sends you to retailers that handle the series in your country. Of course, depending on the country or the manga, some series may not be available for purchase. In those cases, we’ll make sure the first and last six chapters are always on the app. As for Jump+ works, they will be released in full.
What kind of Jump manga can we expect to find when the app first comes out?
Of course, there will be series from the magazine that fans are most familiar with, Weekly Shonen Jump. However, we’re also planning on releasing works from other weekly, monthly, and bimonthly magazines, such as Jump+, Young Jump, Jump Square, and V Jump. It’s really simple to use, and you can bookmark your favorite works and even leave comments on them. I really want everyone across the world to have a great time reading manga together, at the same time. We plan to improve and add functions according to our readers wishes, so please let us know your thoughts through the app.
Thank you, I think I get what kind of app it is now. So, just how did the development of this application start?
The original idea for the app came about around two or three years ago. One reason we first thought about it was to combat pirate manga applications. Despite Jump series being read worldwide, official releases aren’t available in some countries, whether that’s digitally or in print. We also realized that even in countries where people could get their hands on official copies, it was taking a long time. We wanted those fans to be able read our manga as soon as possible. That’s why we started developing this app, with a focus on making releases available worldwide, and at the same time as in Japan. From a business point of view, we’re hoping to get responses from readers of various nationalities that we couldn’t come up with ourselves. That way we can see why certain manga are or are not popular in different countries. Also, we just think that it would be so much fun for everyone across the world to be able to read manga at the same time and share what they think. I hope that we can help fans find series they’ve never heard of and give people all over the world the chance to encounter new manga.
What kind of experience can we expect from this app?
For manga lovers, we offer the opportunity to read manga at the same time as fans in Japan, and share their passion with others. For example, when the new series from Masashi Kishimoto (the author of Naruto) comes out, everyone across the globe will be able to share their thoughts on the first chapter. They can experience sharing their excitement those all over the world.
I’ve always wanted to ask someone from Shueisha, which has produced many hit manga such as Dragon Ball, Naruto, and One Piece, this question: What kind of positive impact do you think reading manga has on a person’s life?
I believe that manga gives us a certain something that fills a space in our hearts without us realizing. I think a lot of people believe that reading manga enriches your life, but if you’re just reading it because you’ve been told you should, or that it will benefit you in some way, then it just won’t have the same effect. You could even say that easily-understood benefits of reading manga are actually just effects that limit you. The stories you see and live through in manga increase your fictional experience points, helping you through times where you feel dragged down or like you’ve failed. You can use those XP to better deal with stress at work, for example. When you read manga, the story gives you more mental energy. Feeling moved by something emotionally is good for the heart.
You just put my exact thoughts into words! I knew being an otaku was a good thing... I’m gonna hold my head high from now on.
Manga is representative of Japanese pop culture, but what kind of culture do you see it transforming into abroad?
To be honest, I’m not even thinking about how I want manga to evolve as a culture in other countries. I have realized that we’ve wasted a lot of time getting to this point, though. Now I understand how passionate readers and fans are, I’m thinking of how to increase the genre’s presence. I want it to become an even stronger form of entertainment. Unlike how it was in the past, we’re now in an age where we have to work out how to battle digitally. Of course, we’re in competition with other forms of entertainment when it comes to how users spend their time, but since smartphones now exist, most genres are fighting on equal ground. I actually think these changes are beneficial to manga. In any case, we want to do everything we can. We believe that in the future, we will see an unexpected reaction. After that, anything could happen. We’ll keep working, all the while treasuring diversity.
Finally, do you have a message for all the international manga fans out there?
I would love for Japanese and international fans to come together using this app. If you feel anything about it could be changed or improved, please let us know. We’re going to make sure this an app you won’t regret downloading, so please work with us to make that happen!
Thank you so much for your time today, Mr. Hosono!

Well, that’s it. We’ve successfully confirmed that the rumor is true! The latest Japanese manga is now available worldwide in English! You can download the app from the links below, so make sure to check it out. We’ll see you at the next interview and in the news!

  • Going by the same name as the anime, "Back Street Girls -Gokudolls-" will officially debut on February 18th on MBS before being released on TBS two days later, on the 20th. The series will have six episodes in full.

Top 10 Cutest Characters in Shoujo☆Kageki Revue Starlight

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" bookwalker_id="" cdj_product_id="PCCG-70432" text="" url="" ]

There are many ways to enter the world of show business, but one of them that is particularly hard is to become part of a troupe. You don’t just need to have a lot of sheer talent but also be able to work in a team and be able to act as both the showstopper and the chorus girl if needed. This is one of the obstacles that Karen Aijo and Hikari Kagura must face to follow their dreams of becoming part of Starlight, one such song and dance revue troupe. They have to be the best singers, dancers, and of course, the cutest. But with a whole other group of girls who want the exact same thing, they have a hard competition ahead. Which is why today we’re counting down the ten cutest characters in Shoujo☆Kageki Revue Starlight, to see who deserves to be the Top Star at the stage.

[ad_top2 class="mt40 mb40"]

10. Claudine Saijou

Born to a Japanese father and a French mother, Claudine started her career when she was a very young child. This made her think at first that she was a shoo-in for the Starlight stage, but as soon as she entered Seisho Music Academy, she realized that not only was she not the best, but she needed to work to keep her place as one of the top performers. She has a huge rivalry going with Maya, who is number one because she needs to prove that she's better. Claudine is very beautiful, with serious brown eyes, and long dirty blond hair. She makes a gorgeous dancer and can be imposing with her long sword, but unfortunately for her cuteness factor, she looks more dangerous than the others. This is not to say she's not beautiful or that she wouldn't be in the top spot in a list about who is the most gorgeous of the troupe hopefuls, but it undercuts her cuteness so she falls to the tenth spot on the list.

9. Kaoruko Hanayagi

Kaoruko comes from a long line of Japanese traditional dancers and is the granddaughter of one of the masters of the art. She’s accustomed to being treated like royalty so she tends to insist that Futaba acts like her maid and serves her with loyalty. This brings her some troubles at school because she's talented but lazy and that makes her think she doesn't need to give all her effort during practice so she's not ranked as high as she should. Despite this, one can't deny she's quite cute. She has long blue hair, and around the audience and teachers, she acts like a proper lady, demure and polite. It's only around her classmates that she lets her true colors show. She has golden eyes and is very talented with a naginata, her weapon of choice. Most of the time, she can pass as a perfect woman. However, her attitude and arrogance make her fall to the ninth place on our list.

8. Maya Tendo

One could say that Maya Tendo was born for the stage. This is a bit literal as she is the daughter of a famous actor and an opera prima donna. However, unlike Kaoruko, Maya doesn't rely on her natural talent to succeed and trains and practices as hard as all her other classmates and she dislikes Kaoruko for her laziness. Unfortunately, her drive to be the best makes it really hard to have time to make friends, and she is convinced that being the Top Star means that no one will want to be her friend so she is quite lonely. A lot of people compare Maya to a swan because her presence is that majestic. She has long brown hair that she keeps in a ponytail with a blue ribbon, and holds her bangs with x-shaped hairpins, which makes her look even more beautiful. The only thing that makes her not be as cute as she could be, is her aura of perfection, and how majestic she can be even when doing something as silly as describing food. Because of this, she only reaches the eighth place on our list.

7. Mahiru Tsuyuzaki

Offstage, Mahiru seems shy and calm. One would never imagine that she is one of the most vigorous dancers and singers in the school. She's very devoted to Karen, to the point that everyone in school knows that she admires her—it may be a bit more than just admiration—and has some rivalry against Hikari just because Karen and Hikari are childhood friends. Not only that, but she’s convinced that she’s not worthy of being at the school unless she’s Karen’s sidekick, which explains why she’s so shy when not performing. Mahiru has long purple hair, and big blue eyes. She usually dresses in light green, which makes her look even more like a violet, which is quite appropriate given her attitude in school. And she is one of the nicer girls in school, at least when not trying to keep Hikari away from Karen; she is really cute and earns the seventh place on our list.

6. Futaba Isurugi

Futaba Isurugi didn’t really have any drive to become part of the Starlight troupe, but since her friend Kaoruko enrolled, she decided to follow to stay close to her. She’s very loyal to Kaoruko, following her orders when needed and while she complains about it, in the end, it's obvious that she thinks Kaoruko’s wellbeing is the most important thing to protect. It doesn't mean she doesn’t give her best in her classes, though; and in fact, she’s the one who makes sure Kaoruko arrives in time to hers. As she’s one of the few girls who wears her hair short, it’s easy to peg her as a tomboy, but she has a very sweet side. Her hair is bright pink, which makes her look even cuter, even when she’s losing her patience with Kaoruko. She uses an axe, which is not a very feminine weapon, and is why she loses some points and lands on the sixth place of our list.

[ad_middle]

5. Junna Hoshimi

Junna is one of the honor students at the Academy and the class representative for the99th class. This is because unlike the others, she has to put in more effort to prove to herself that she deserves to be a student and a member of the troupe because she decided to become an actress over her parents’ complaints that it would be wasting her intelligence. This means she also overanalyzes the situations she faces and at the beginning was a loner, as she thought she couldn’t relate to her classmates. Junna has long flowing purple hair that she keeps in a ponytail and is one of the few students that wear glasses, which make her look very cute and hide how dangerous she can be with her bow and arrows. Her personal color is blue, which also highlights how cold and aloof she seems at first glance and is the only reason she remains in fifth place.

4. Nana Daiba

Nana is pretty much the “mom” of the 99th Class, as she cooks for everyone and is always trying to make sure they all are happy. She’s quite an amazing cook and wants the whole group to stay together; this is why she doesn’t like when girls drop out of the class due to the terrible pressure to perform. Nicknamed “Banana” by the others, she’s very skilled—almost even better than Maya—but she doesn’t really care about being the best, she only wants to be part of the happy team, a little too much at times. She's the tallest of the group, blonde and green-eyed. She wears her hair in pigtails, and that makes her look a bit younger than her true age which, with her sunny attitude, make her stand out among her peers. It's funny how she really doesn't need to be the Top star and instead prefers to spend her time with her friends, making sure everyone is happy. As she sometimes takes that too far, she takes the fourth place in our cute ranking.

3. Kirin

A mysterious being that oversees the auditions for the Starlight Revue and seems to feed on the despair of the girls that don’t quite make the cut. He is behind many of the problems that plague the girls and seems to have many powers, including the ability to rewind reality if he wishes so and even break the fourth wall. Usually, this kind of character wouldn’t be called “cute” by any measure of the world, but Kirin has one particular advantage that puts him quite high in our list: He is a talking giraffe. Giraffes are cute and that’s hard to dispute. They look a bit ridiculous with their long necks and spotted fur, they always look a bit confused as to what’s going on around them. While it’s obvious that Kirin is not ignorant of what’s happening at the school, he still has the same expression so it’s very hard to feel intimidated by him, and that is why he earns the third spot on our list.

2. Hikari Kagura

Karen’s old childhood friend, who had a lot of passion for the stage to the point that she and Karen promised they’d be one day standing together as part of Starlight. Then, her parents took her to live in England to study at a performing school and thus, they lost contact. In England, Hikari lost the auditions and with that, most of her love for the stage; but now that she’s back in Japan and reconnected with Karen, she has some of her passion back. Unfortunately for Karen, she wants to focus on not letting Karen do the auditions so that Hikari can make certain that her friend won’t lose her passion too. Hikaru is tall, aloof and seemingly cold when we first met her, but she used to be very friendly when she and Karen were children. She has long black hair and wears a blue uniform. While usually a cool, blue-eyed, dark-haired girl wouldn't be considered cute, the fact that she absolutely loves plush toys, specifically stuffed bears, and has one in her uniform, make her a lot cuter. She still sleeps with a teddy bear, and because of that, she climbs to the second place on our list.

1. Karen Aijo

When she was a little girl, Karen saw a performance of the Starlight troupe and fell in love. From that moment on, she declared she would one day be part of that troupe and perform in similar plays with her friend Hikari. Even after Hikari left for England, Karen never stopped chasing her dream. When Hikari returned to Japan and enrolled in the same academy as her, Karen was incredibly happy. Unfortunately, her time away changed Hikari, so now Karen is not sure where she stands with her former best friend. Karen is the most energetic and happy of the 99th class, and that automatically makes her cute. She’s always friendly, always smiling and unlike everyone else, she doesn’t think you need to be alone to be the Top Star. In fact, she wants everyone to become a Top Star and perform together with all their hearts, as long as it’s not in the matinee since she hates mornings. She has short brown hair, and wears it in two small pigtails, with a cute crown in her stage costume and two crown hairclips. And because no one can resist her smile, she earns the first place on our list.

Final Thoughts

There are a lot of sacrifices one has to make in order to become a star, even more in the harsh world of the Seisho Music Academy where failure to become the Top Star on stage can be devastating for the girls who fail the audition. So girls need every advantage to succeed, and one of those advantages is how cute they are for the audience. And because you are also part of the audience, we need to know: Do you agree with our list? Or do you believe the order should be different? Please, let us know what you think in the comments below.

Singapore, Singapore

Have you watched Sora Yori mo tooi Basho, otherwise known as A Place Further than the Universe? If you have, you know the girls had to travel a bit before going to Antartica. In episode 6, the girls have a layover in Singapore, Singapore—if you didn’t know, it’s the name of the city and country!—where the girls disembark for some fun before flying out to Australia. If you thought the city looked interesting in Sora Yori mo tooi Basho—as well as in the popular movie Crazy Rich Asians—then we here at Honey’s Anime are here to talk about this beautiful city in South East Asia!

[ad_top2 class="mt40"]

Singapore Info

Location Singapore, Singapore
Cost of Admission Singapore is known as one of the most expensive cities in the world, but when it comes to being a tourist, it’s actually quite average compared to the likes of the US, Japan, or parts of Europe. As a big business hub, flights tend to be quite reasonable to go to Singapore and hotels are moderately priced (unless you want to stay at the Marina Bay Sands). Even train tickets are quite cheap compared to the Tokyo subway, New York subway, or even the London tube.

The Experience

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="crunchyroll" url="https://www.crunchyroll.com/a-place-further-than-the-universe/episode-6-welcome-to-the-durian-show-757779" ]

Singapore has a reputation for being one of the cleanest cities in the world, and for good reason. There is a high penalty for littering and certain irreputable actions, but thanks to that, the city is pretty immaculate and a great tourist destination for those who want to go to South East Asia but don’t enjoy getting down and dirty. You’ll fly into Changi Airport, which has been voted as the top airport in the world numerous times. Many of the tourist attractions are reachable by using the MRT, but taxis are also quite convenient and cost effective if you prefer traveling by taxi. Major tourist attractions include the Singapore Botanic Gardens (the only botanical garden in the world to be a UNESCO World Heritage Site), Universal Studios Singapore, Gardens By the Bay, Marina Bay Sands, Singapore Zoo, Clarke Quay, Orchard Road, Night Safari, Esplanade, and the Merlion. Of course, there are many more attractions still, but these are the major ones that people flock to Singapore for. The Marina Bay Sands especially is well known as a tourist attraction as an exceptionally tall hotel with the longest elevated infinity pool in the world, which you can only swim in if you are guest, but you can order a drink at the bar if you book a tour of the Marina Bay Sands. Depending on your itinerary, you can arrange a trip to Singapore to last either 2 days or even a week! Along of the Marina Bay Sands, the girls of Sora Yori mo tooi Basho made sure to take a picture with the notable Merlion. The Merlion is known as the mascot of Singapore and is located near The Fullerton Hotel Singapore and across a walkway from the Esplanade, an opera house designed to look like a giant durian. Speaking of durian, this is a well known fruit around the world notable for its large spikey exterior and distinctive odor, but it is also a popular fruit in South East Asia so you will see it at fruit stalls in Singapore. Make note: You cannot bring durian on the MRT! Singapore is also a huge foodie capital! As a country with a mix of people from all sorts of ethnicities, you have a lot of different cultural foods and fusion foods that really represents the people as a whole. You can go to a hawker centre to try any of the local cuisines. Singapore also has a food stall that has earned a Michelin star if you’re interested in Michelin star restaurants as well. If you aren’t interested in any local fanfare, it’s easy to try many chains from all over the world in Singapore at any of the shopping centres.

Additional info

Singapore is more developed than many other countries in South East Asia, so it’s much easier traveling around Singapore than in say, Laos. The MRT is convenient, but make sure to bring Singaporean Dollar to pay for the MRT as credit cards are not taken. Credit cards can be used, however, at many restaurants and shopping areas, which is very convenient for those who prefer using cards. Just make sure your card won’t charge you a foreign transaction fee! Major languages spoken in Singapore are Mandarin and English, but you will hear many different languages spoken in Singapore thanks to the diverse backgrounds including an amalgamation of all the languages into a sort of slang language called Singlish, which you may not understand very easily at first. Don’t forget to bring your camera for all of the camera ops, loose fitting clothing, sunglasses (the sun is blinding in Singapore), and sunscreen (if you care about your skin).

Final Thoughts

Singapore is a country that has seen great change in the last 50 years. While the city of Singapore changed from a jungle to the metropolitan, shining city that is is now, it is growing as a tourist destination for many. If you love traveling, Singapore may be on your list of destinations to go to, especially after seeing it on Sora Yori mo tooi Basho. Hopefully our Anime Hot Spot was able to give some insight on what to expect from this wonderful South East Asian country! Have any of you readers been to Singapore before? Are you planning to go? Please share your thoughts in the comments below! Once again, thank you for tuning in here at Honey’s Anime. Until next time!

Golden Kamuy 2nd Season Introduction

Saichi Sugimoto, Asirpa and Yoshitake Shiraishi continue their quest to find the lost Ainu gold, dogged by both Toshizou Hijikata and Lieutenant Tsurumi’s eclectic groups. Asirpa struggles to come to terms with the idea that her father might be the infamous Noppera-bou, even as Sugimoto struggles to get over the burdens he still carries with him from the Russo-Japanese war. We also get to learn more about interesting characters like Inkarmat, Hyakunosuke Ogata and Genjirou Tanigaki as their backstories are shared. As enemies become allies and everyone draws closer to the end goal, who will end up victorious in the end? We have reached the goal that these characters have been striving for throughout the series—the Abashiri prison, where Noppera-bou is held. Yet even this major goal is only a small stop on their larger quest to reclaim the much-desired gold!

Why You Should Watch Golden Kamuy 2nd Season
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="crunchyroll" url="https://www.crunchyroll.com/golden-kamuy" ]

1. Unexpected Character Growth

With its second season, Golden Kamuy has defined itself even more clearly as something entirely unique! Not only do the main characters delve further into their own issues, we also get to see back stories and great character development from many of the mysterious side characters as well. Despite their silly moments, each one of these characters is given depth. The relationships between the large cast grow and change along the way, as Golden Kamuy is brilliant at toeing the line between good and evil with its characters’ morality—this makes it easy to find something to love about each character!

2. Finding Noppera-bou

The final two episodes of this season are certainly something we will not forget for a long while! All of the various groups are suddenly gathered in one place, each person with their own goals to fulfill at that moment. Golden Kamuy does a great job of subtly reminding us what each character is striving toward in these episodes, even as epic fights and a few funny moments help to break up the tension of the season’s end. With Sugimoto on his way to get Asirpa back, we absolutely cannot wait for a third season!

3. Much More Story-Driven

Golden Kamuy takes a more focused approach this season, cutting out a fair bit of manga content to make sure the season ended at the Abashiri prison. Though there is still plenty of that weird episodic humor we’ve come to look forward to, the story feels centered on the task of finding Noppera-bou at last. Even backstories and side-plots manage to be shared in a way that makes us understand the character’s reasons for their part in this expedition for the Ainu gold. Compared to its first season, Golden Kamuy seems more put-together with this season’s change, and as a result, the ending is as satisfying as it is unexpectedly heart-wrenching.

Why You Should Skip Golden Kamuy 2nd Season

1. Still Just as Weird as Before

If what you didn’t like about Golden Kamuy before is its strange sense of humor, you definitely won’t find any relief in the second season. The show keeps up its perverted comedic moments throughout the series, adding in a few characters specifically dedicated to this purpose. And this type of sporadic humor is not for everyone… Our advice: watch the first couple of episodes, and if you can’t get past Yasaku Edogai, this show is not for you!

2. You Need to Pay Attention

The episodic nature of Golden Kamuy is far removed from this season, though the elements of cooking and Ainu culture still scattered in each episode make it retain the general feel of before. Due to the story-driven nature of the season this time around, viewers will need to pay closer attention and can’t just watch the show as casually as before. Of course, plenty of other episodic shows aired this past season as well, so if you are missing that element about Golden Kamuy, you can certainly find it elsewhere!

Final Thoughts

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="2019CL-23" text="" url="" ]

Golden Kamuy’s second season showed us even more that this series is amazing! The plethora of unique characters it boasts makes Golden Kamuy as great as it is, and it’s easy to even forget that many of the characters are criminals or war-burdened soldiers! We adored the character development and story-focused plot shown, with the final episodes just emphasizing all the parts we love about this eccentric show. What did you think of the second season of Golden Kamuy? What has been your favorite part so far? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section!

Top 10 Coolest Characters in Double Decker! Doug & Kirill

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" bookwalker_id="" cdj_product_id="BCXA-1405" text="" url="" ]

Hype is a powerful drug. Reuniting key staff members responsible for the thoroughly entertaining Tiger & Bunny series, Double Decker! Doug & Kirill arrives with high expectations and big shoes to fill. Recognized for stellar animation and impressive production value, Sunrise is definitely the correct studio to bring to life this quirky action-comedy. Double Decker! Doug & Kirill is weird. Set in the fictional Lisvaletta, the "Seven-O" strive to safeguard the city's honest residents from a notorious street drug that turns consumers into hulking monstrosities. Aided by a narrator with a quirky sense of humor and boasting stylish visuals, Double Decker! Doug & Kirill ranks as one of the most offbeat and fashionable anime of Fall 2018. These ten characters embody the anime's cool factor!

-- Spoilers Ahead! --

[ad_top2 class="mt40 mb40"]

10. Yuri Fujishiro

Juxtapositioning splendidly with her rash partner, Yuri Fujishiro epitomizes an officer's most desirable characteristics. Permanently confident and poised, Yuri seldom reacts in the face of danger, making her an excellent candidate to deal with any high-risk situations. The officer shows so little emotion, she almost comes across as a robot! In fact, Yuri is an android, although an advanced enough model capable of convincingly passing as human. An excellent physical specimen and instilled with a literal computer in her head, Yuri is essentially the perfect detective. While her icy demeanor makes for quite a cool character, the android's personality does not facilitate any real intensity. Coupled with the cynical Maxine, Yuri has a stabilizing influence on her partner. With the exception of Kirill, everyone in the department knows Yuri is an android. Despite the character's artificial inception, she is treated as one of the gang! That's pretty cool.

9. Milla Vrubel

Lasting a short 13 episodes, Double Decker! Doug & Kirill introduces an expansive cast packed with fascinating but barely explored members. Hopefully, a second season is greenlit that further elaborates on the anime's secondary characters. As it currently stands, Milla Vrubel amounts to little more than a minor distraction, but Kirill's older brother deserves better! Hailing from another civilization called the "second sun," as children, Milla and Kirill were forced to leave their home as a last ditch effort for survival. Orphaned and with scarcely a cent to their names, the siblings depended on a mysterious old man to look after them. Recognizing the need to maintain a low profile, Milla pretended to be a woman, believing this would attract less attention than two near-identical siblings. Realizing a gender swap may not be sufficient, Milla abandoned Kirill for his own safety. Milla altered his gender to protect his brother. How can such a selfless act be defined as anything other than cool? Along with shedding light on Kirill's past, Milla's disappearance motivated the protagonist to become an officer. Milla’s real name is Valery, and Kirill might benefit from heeding his sibling’s example.

8. Travis Murphy

Carrying a pipe and dressed like a porn star from the 1970s, Travis Murphy is near impossible to take seriously. Sort of similar to Tiger & Bunny, Double Decker! Doug & Kirill attempts to strike a middle ground between hijinks and genuine drama. Periodically breaking up the flow of an episode to essentially riff at the anime's expense, the narrator clearly believes he is presiding over a comedy. Conversely, the "Anthem" plot is tackled relatively earnestly. Travis firmly adheres to the belief that Double Decker! Doug & Kirill is a parody of cop procedurals and old-school action shows from the days of Miami Vice and Charlie's Angels. Seven-O's head describes the squad's female inspectors as "Travis' Angels," a nickname addressed with nothing but scorn by the chosen officers. Travis acts as if he is the coolest person to ever grace an anime, which is part of the joke! Occasionally, Travis is permitted to actually accomplish some proper police work, and the department's leader tends to shine like a somewhat slimy diamond! While a far cooler specimen in his own mind, nevertheless, Travis has his moments.

7. Katherine Rochefort

Basically, Katherine Rochefort is Double Decker! Doug & Kirill's equivalent of Psycho-Pass's Akane Tsunemori. Recently accepted into the task force, she injects a touch of normalcy into proceedings. If compared to any other Seven-O operative, Katherine comes across as a beacon of sanity. In a comedy duo, she would perform the part of the straight man. Now, in all fairness, Akane is Psycho-Pass' female lead, with the audience primarily experiencing the story through her eyes. Comparatively, Katherine holds a far less significant role in Double Decker! Doug & Kirill. In an action series, ordinary characters help ground their quirkier comrades; however, comedies tend to treat normies rather differently. Considering Doug and Kirill can hardly be classified as average, a relatively "normal" character sticks out like a sore thumb. Fresh out of the academy and a stickler for rules, Katherine pushes back against the Seven-O's tendency to operate outside the law's limits. Gratefully, Double Decker! Doug & Kirill opts against treating the officer as a comedy foil to the rest of the group's antics. If the need arises, Katherine willingly cuts through the red tape to get the job done!

6. Deana Del Rio

Hilariously partnered up with the strict Katherine, Deana del Rio is a loose cannon. Proficient with a sniper rifle and never shying away from a confrontation, Deana wears her emotions on her sleeve and shows a complete disregard for tact or subtlety. That's not to say the officer lacks intelligence, but Deana's actions tend to be driven by gut feelings and anger rather than strategy. Draped in pink and fashionably designed, Deana's appearance deserves a reasonable amount of credit for the inspector securing a spot so high on this list. Let's just say she would not seem out of place in Persona 5, and that is saying something! Along with her impeccable wardrobe, Deana's loud personality allows the character to steal many scenes. Overall, Double Decker! Doug & Kirill devotes a single episode to Seven-O's secondary teams, and Deana made the most of her 15 minutes of fame!

[ad_middle]

5. Zabel Franken

Without a fitting villain, an awesome protagonist can never truly fulfill their potential. As Double Decker! Doug & Kirill's big bad, Zabel Franken debuts as a death row inmate who was used as a scapegoat by the Esperanza crime syndicate. Seeking to eliminate the group's leader, Doug and Kirill agree to work with Zabel, but the dude ultimately pulls off a Keyser Söze to reveal himself as the true mastermind. Initially, Zabel comes across as meek and powerless, but that could not be further from the truth! Once the illusion is lifted and the villain exposes his hand, Zabel transforms from a lackey into a suave and intimidating antagonist with a talent for encroaching under Doug's skin. Outfitted in elegant suits and always a couple of steps ahead of the game, Zabel is a villain you cannot help but love to hate! We are not saying that murderous sociopaths are cool, but THIS murderous sociopath is pretty cool. Blame it on Zabel's beard and wardrobe. The villain boasts enough style to grace the front pages of any trendy fashion magazine.

4. Bamboo Man

Zabel may serve as Esperanza's head, but Bamboo Man is undoubtedly the organization's flashiest representative! A respected and feared member of the crime syndicate, Bamboo Man is impossible to miss regardless of the situation or characters on screen. Typically, he is the one dressed as a clown. Alternatively, the gangster removes his makeup and pretends to be a high-ranking military officer. Anthem provides users with a substantial physical boost, although this gift charges quite a price. Manifesting a person's innate desires, they are turned into crazy monsters driven solely by impulse. As tends to be the case, Esperanza's members supply but generally avoid consuming the drug themselves. Pressured by the Seven-O's relentless pursuit, many are forced to "sample" the product as a last ditch effort for survival. Bamboo Man has nothing to fear. Unlike the average gangster, the villain's strength depends not on the administration of an external substance. Consequently, Bamboo Man is a terrifying and unpredictable opponent! While we would hate to cross paths with this character, Bamboo Man lights up the screen whenever he makes an appearance!

3. Kirill Vrubel

Along with Doug Billingham, Kirill Vrubel enjoys the privilege of being Double Decker! Doug & Kirill's main character. A rookie detective aspiring to be an adored hero, Kirill's arrogance regularly draws trouble to himself and others. Generally speaking, Kirill seems principally designed to emphasis Doug's inherent coolness, a task accomplished efficiently by the rookie. Inadvertently the butt of many of the anime's jokes, Kirill is a walking punchline! Yet, there is just something about Kirill that hits the spot. Despite constantly jumping to ludicrous conclusions and being the subject of recurring hazing by the Seven-O's veteran inspectors, Kirill is undeniably endearing. Even if unfounded, the protagonist's unfaltering self-belief and unrelenting drive for success are admirable. Crucially, Double Decker! Doug & Kirill's rookie possesses just enough self-awareness to avoid grating on a viewer's nerves. Obtuse and rash, Kirill has a long way to go before actualizing his dream of inspiring a new era of peace. Nevertheless, we are rooting for the constable!

2. Maxine Silverstone

Bestowed with a tomboyish visual design and an aggressive attitude, Maxine Silverstone screams "cool." Judging a book by its cover frequently leads to disappointment, but Double Decker! Doug & Kirill's inspector should not be dismissed as just another pretty face. Without exception, Sunrise's show successfully utilizes a character's appearance as a physical manifestation of their personality. Maxine is not merely the department's resident "cool" biker. The officer's backstory directly inspired Maxine's current persona. As a teenager, Max preferred the company of books over people, although she developed a crush on her transgender friend Connor. Selecting prom as the latter's coming out party, Max's companion was relentlessly ridiculed by his former classmates, an act that drove Connor to drugs and depression. Ultimately, Connor disappeared and left behind a bitter Max. Max's appearance pays tribute to her shunned friend. Riding around on a motorcycle and more than capable of holding her own in a fight, Max refuses to hide her disdain for any signs of injustice or intolerance. Outside of the office, Max lets down her defenses and displays a gentler side of her personality.

1. Douglas “Doug” Bilingham

Honestly, who else could it be? Douglas Billingham oozes charisma and sophistication. Even during those rare moments when the detective loses his cool, Doug still comes across as a Hollywood action lead fit to star alongside any iconic actor from the '80s. Whether patiently staking out a hideout or staring down a colossal beast seeking to demolish anything or anyone in its path, Doug accepts any challenge without ever complaining. As the Seven-0's oldest member, Doug tends to carry most of the responsibility; thankfully, those are some mighty sturdy shoulders! Partnered up with the hotheaded Kirill, Doug is the constable's polar opposite. Both are reasonably talented, but the older detective prefers to exercise a more understated approach. Despite being a master combatant, the veteran inspector usually encourages Kirill to wait for backup. With the exception of cases dealing specifically with Esperanza operatives, Doug avoids taking any unnecessary risks. In the hands of an expert, anything seems easy. Stoic to a fault, Douglas Billingham is the ideal Kirill aspires to reach! Funny, dangerous, and charismatic; Doug has his name in the title for a reason!

Final Thoughts

Double Decker! Doug & Kirill follows several detectives as they track down a criminal organization responsible for a drug that triggers mutant transformations in its users. Is anyone shocked the cast is packed with memorable and awesome characters? Combining Sunrise's impressive animation and reassembling a portion of Tiger & Bunny's staff, Double Decker! Doug & Kirill is cool enough to turn the Sun into a snowball! Which Double Decker! Doug & Kirill character is the coolest for you? Please let us know in the comment section below.
