Ingress the Animation Introduction and Story

Exotic Matter, commonly abbreviated as “XM”, permeates the world, subtly impacting the minds of everyone exposed to it. Within it lies the key to unprecedented growth, both technological and personal, but also the risk of powerful actors turning it towards less than honorable ends. Two factions vie for control over XM, The Enlightened, who want to spread it freely for humanity’s advancement, and The Resistance, who see XM as a danger to be carefully contained and monitored. The story is told through the perspective of three protagonists: Jack Norman, Makoto Midorikawa, and Sarah Coppola, each of them is a “Sensitive”, people who harbor supernatural talents strengthened by XM. Jack is an agent of The Resistance with considerable military skills and a partner to the disappeared scientist Christopher Brandt. Makoto, a freshly inducted member of The Enlightened, was previously unaware of XM despite using his abilities for detective work before he’s urged by an unknown source to rescue Sarah Coppola, an amnesiac XM researcher taken captive by the vile organization, Hulong. After a brief scuffle, Jack and Makoto discover that they are united in their opposition of Hulong despite belonging to different factions. With Sarah’s returning memories and unique ability to interact with XM, the trio uncovers the truth behind Christopher’s disappearance and Hulong’s existence as just a cog in a greater threat to humanity’s free will. Initially released in Japanese late last year, Ingress the Animation is a fast-paced, CGI animated title with themes that focus on connections between ostracized people as well as the nature of humanity’s collective consciousness and the ethics of attempting to steer it. Don’t be daunted though, the overarching plot is kept simple: stop the conspiracy, save the world.

Why you should watch Ingress the Animation
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="SHBR-522" text="" url="" ]

1. For Long-Time Agents, an Expansion. For Newcomers, an Introduction.

In part, Ingress the Animation is a marketing tool meant to advertise Niantic’s mobile game of the same title, but it does do its level best to present itself as an enjoyable story that can provide a gateway into the basic conflicts and lore. Players of Ingress, or rather, “agents” may be pleased to see representatives of both factions in the form of ADA and Hank Johnson, members of The Resistance and The Enlightened whose characters stay true to the source material and make major contributions to the plot.

2. A self-contained Story

The anime is surprisingly outsider-friendly, giving viewers all of the details they need to fully understand the major plot points. There are a few self-indulgent references to be found, but none that detract severely from the story’s ability to stand by itself.

3. Modern Supernatural Action

With current trends geared towards the second wave of deconstructive works, isekai, and feel-good slice of life titles, Ingress the Animation is a blip on the radar for a currently underrepresented genre. It shamelessly plays to the strengths of its detective/black suit image and doesn’t think about subverting your expectations or masquerading as high art. Going through the constant vehicle chases and plots within plots is almost like taking a trip back to the early 2000s. What you see is what you get.

[ad_middle class="mt40"]
Why You Should Skip Ingress the Animation

1. A Moment to Think, If You Please!

While Ingress the Animation does a good job of not assuming that viewers already have all of the relevant background information, it delivers its exposition hard and fast. The anime is restricted to 11 episodes in which it has to introduce three main characters, multiple organizations, locations, and an easily foreseen but decent plot twist, there’s very little time to retrace its steps. It might give off the feeling of a title that’s too stuffed for its skin.

2. Aggressive Product Placement

The start of every episode bids the viewer to log in to Ingress, addressing them as if they were an agent. The call to action, however, is tangential to the plot and fails to provide viewers with a real connection. It might sound cool the first time but by the eighth, the gimmick can feel like the app is being pushed on people. The product placement continues through the sometimes bumpy direct integration of game elements into the story. Sometimes, the effort that one has to devote to divorcing Ingress the Animation’s role as a long-form advertisement makes the otherwise decent plotline suffer.

3. Divisive Animation Style

We won’t beat around the bush, CGI has its crowd of vocal detractors, and their arguments do hold a degree of merit. Technical limitations can get in the way of smooth movement and living backgrounds, not to mention the facial expressions of the characters. Models moving at speeds under “breakneck” might give off a wooden impression to those who haven’t already gotten used to the animation style through titles like Aijin or Knights of Sidonia.

Final Thoughts

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="4065142261" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]

Whether Ingress the Animation ends up feeling like a well-produced, legitimate piece of work or an annoyance hinges largely on a viewer’s tolerance for its nature as a marketing tool and liberal use of the rule of cool to drive its plot. In either case, we at Honey’s Anime believe that it’s worth at least a cursory look.

Maybe Not Bigger but Still Rocking

  • Developer: ACE Team, ATLUS
  • Release Date: May 14, 2019
  • Price:$14.99
  • Rating: E 10+ For Everyone 10+
  • Genre: Action, Strategy, Tower Defense
  • Players: 1-4

Who it Caters to

Rocks are a primitive weapon in warfare and always have been. Yet, those who know of their potential also know that rocks can be the decisive factor in any fight. Rock of Ages 2: Bigger & Boulder makes sure people realize that by being a sequel to the hit original back in 2011. We here at Honey’s Anime got our own copy of Rock of Ages 2: Bigger & Boulder and were quite pleased to relive the greatness of rock-based combat once again in this amazingly fun tower defense geared title. However, was our experience perfect or does this rock have a few cracks? Find out in our full Nintendo Switch review of Rock of Ages 2: Bigger & Boulder down below!

What to Expect

Rock of Ages 2: Bigger & Boulder is a tower defense game with one simple theme…slam rocks into each other to win. Players control a giant boulder and run it head first into the enemy. As you play, you’ll relive various eras and periods from the renaissance to Egyptian and many others! Play either solo in a lengthy single player story mode or go online to fight against others!
[ad_top2 class="mt40 mb40"]

Story

War is fought in numerous ways. Some battles are fought with guns and large cannons. Other wars have warriors using close handed weapons to engage in bloody combat. In Rock of Ages 2: Bigger & Boulder war is fought with giant rocks with faces! Take control of various historical figures and launch boulders at your enemy stronghold with ferocity and skill. Shatter whatever defenses they throw at you and show them your rocks are a lot bigger than theirs!

Gameplay

Tower defense games were a big genre back in the early 2000s because they were simple time wasters. People could invest either ten minutes or less into a good tower defense title and then go back to doing what they needed to. Even today, tower defense-based games—while not as popular—still tend to be relevant with those who need bite sized gaming experiences every once in a while. Rock of Ages is a perfect example of a tower defense-like game that was widely popular despite being quite…strange. Rock of Ages 2: Bigger & Boulder is the sequel to this quirky title and we got to play it for the Nintendo Switch when it released. Is Rock of Ages 2: Bigger & Boulder worth your Nintendo Switch space or should you avoid it like a rock in the road? Besides getting ready for a lot of rock puns, let’s judge Rock of Ages 2: Bigger & Boulder in our full review! Rock of Ages 2: Bigger & Boulder is largely unchanged from the original title. Players assume the control of historical figures—Napoleon and Ramses to name a few—and engage in warfare with one another. However, unlike the real-world historical battles, Rock of Ages 2: Bigger & Boulder has players use giant boulders with silly faces and launch them into their opponent’s stronghold. The first player to destroy the enemy’s base and literally crush their competition is the victor and that is the brunt of Rock of Ages 2: Bigger & Boulder. What makes Rock of Ages 2: Bigger & Boulder work though—despite its extremely simplicity—is how the game takes tower defense and makes it more action orientated and strategic. When you guide your boulder—or when your enemy launches one at you—you’re in control to either avoid defense hastily made and/or maneuver around map hazards that change depending on the period you’re in. On some maps, you’ll need to jump over giant holes or roll your ball on ship platforms to avoid dangerous water pits. Rock of Ages 2: Bigger & Boulder constantly has you making quick on the fly actions and that is what keeps its simplicity from ever becoming mind numbing. Thinking of how to avoid a well-made barricade from the enemy or how to set up your own is a fun element to Rock of Ages 2: Bigger & Boulder and gets only better the further in you get. Aside from a single player element, Rock of Ages 2: Bigger & Boulder also has multiplayer and that is where things really rock hard. Players can either go 1 vs 1 against others with custom settings on or they can go 2 vs 2 where teams try to help destroy the enemy together. Either option is a blast and we had the most fun in multiplayer as the AI can only do so much versus a creative human player who might make defenses that literally put you in between a rock and a hard place. Rock of Ages 2: Bigger & Boulder seems almost perfect, but there are a few issues and one of them is more noticeable on the Nintendo Switch version. While the Nintendo Switch isn’t a strong console—though some games prove otherwise—we’ve come to appreciate how developers handle the console’s weaker elements, especially in handheld mode. Rock of Ages 2: Bigger & Boulder suffers when in portable mode unfortunately due to some pretty bad visuals that make the battlefield look blurry and—at times—extremely low rez. While the comedic cutscenes still look solid and we don’t expect Rock of Ages 2: Bigger & Boulder to win the best graphics of the year award, while in docked mode, the difference in visuals is night and day. Our other minor gripe is Rock of Ages 2: Bigger & Boulder is very much like the original only with minor changes and different maps. Rock of Ages 2: Bigger & Boulder isn’t expensive—it’s actually quite cheap—but it could have been an add on given the amount it adds versus being a whole different entry in the now series.
[ad_middle class="mt40 mb40"]

Honey's Gameplay Consensus:

Rock of Ages 2: Bigger & Boulder is mostly unchanged and that isn’t a bad thing for such a simple game like this. Yes, you might just be guiding giant rocks towards one end of a map but the strategy comes from dealing with enemy defenses and getting your boulder to that enemy base in the best way possible. The Nintendo Switch version makes Rock of Ages 2: Bigger & Boulder portable for some good tower defense on the go but it shows weakness due to some blurry visuals and overall weaker graphics when in handheld mode. If you can overlook that minor issue though, Rock of Ages 2: Bigger & Boulder is a solid title for any Switch owner and shows that reinventing the wheel—or the rock in this case—doesn’t always need to be done with a simple formula. Rock of Ages 2: Bigger & Boulder is a fun game that is at an excellent price tag making it a must buy for fans of the original or fans of tower defense games.

Honey's Pros:

  • Fun and addictive tower defense gameplay that can be played by anyone
  • Comedic narrative makes the most “historical” moments feel silly and goofy
  • Playing Rock of Ages 2: Bigger & Boulder on the go can be a real treat
  • Multiplayer allows for some chaotic games
  • Amazing price tag

Honey's Cons:

  • Largely unchanged from the first title
  • Handheld mode makes graphics look blurry and weak

Honey's Final Verdict:

Maybe not much has changed with Rock of Ages 2: Bigger & Boulder, but that doesn’t mean you won’t enjoy this rocking title. We loved the simple gameplay and even more loved the comedy element. Rock of Ages 2: Bigger & Boulder is a necessary title for fans—and even newcomers—and gets our seal of approval without a doubt in our hearts! Pokémon Detective Pikachu Introduction and Story

Ryme City is the only city in the whole Pokémon world where humans and Pokémon live together. When 21-year-old Tim Goodman’s father, Detective Harry Goodman, seemingly dies, Tim heads from his small town where he lives with his grandmother to Ryme City to collect his father’s things. When he arrives at his father’s apartment, Tim encounters his father’s partner Pokémon, a pikachu. This pikachu can mysteriously talk to Tim, but no one else seems to be able to hear him or communicate with him. Then, Pikachu convinces Tim that his father isn’t dead and that they should work together to find him since Tim doesn’t have a Pokémon partner and his is missing. The two set out to find the truth behind what happened to his father. Both Tim and Pikachu join up with an aspiring reporter, Lucy Stevens, and her partner Pokémon, a psyduck. During their investigation, the two interrogate suspects, infiltrate a Pokémon battle ring, and uncover a conspiracy concerning Mewtwo. Of course, the movie has a happy ending, but we at Honey’s won’t spoil what happens.

Why You Should Watch Pokémon Detective Pikachu
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="imdb" url="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5884052" ]

1. There Are a Variety of Pokémon.

One of the worries many Pokémon fans had was how many Pokémon were actually going to be in the movie. Surprisingly, there was quite a variety that covered many generations and not just the first one. Moviegoers get to see all of the first generation starters as well as Pokémon like greninja and ludicolo.

2. Fans Will Appreciate the Effort Put Into the Movie.

In the movie Detective Pikachu, moviegoers will get to see a couple of evolutions, a Pokémon battle, and Pokémon that look quite hyper-realistic. Unlike other movies that don’t keep to their origins, this movie stays true to the Pokémon franchise with quips about the Pokémon themselves, references to Pokémon trainers and Pokémon leagues, and nods to the different Pokémon and their personalities.

3. The Story is Cute and Funny.

If moviegoers haven’t played the Detective Pikachu games, that’s all right. This movie doesn’t borrow much from the games themselves, but does a good job of combining the concept of a pikachu detective with a real Pokémon world. There are funny cringey moments and hysterical ones as well, including Pikachu singing a sad rendition of the Pokémon theme song Gotta Catch ‘Em All.

[ad_middle class="mt40"]
Why You Should Skip Pokémon Detective Pikachu

1. The Hyper-Realistic Style Isn’t For Everyone.

To be frank, some of the Pokémon look downright strange. Of course, Pokémon have only really been viewed in their animated form, so seeing them look more realistic emphasizes that “monster” part that comes from “pocket monster.” Not all Pokémon are as cute as Pikachu or a bulbasaur.

2. There Aren’t Any Real, True Pokémon Battles.

Detective Pikachu is all about finding Tim’s dad, Harry. Therefore, there are mentions of Pokémon battling, but that’s been outlawed in Ryme City, so the closest thing that moviegoers get to an actual Pokémon battle is the underground ring that Tim and Pikachu get into to investigate the mysterious R serum. However, when Pikachu gets into the ring, he finds that he can’t even use his powers because he has amnesia and forgot how to use them. Quite a big letdown for Pokémon fans.

3. The Story and Characters Aren’t Very Original.

To be quite honest, the Detective Pikachu movie isn’t all that original. The story involves using Mewtwo and him breaking out of yet another lab and disappearing. Other characters, like Lucy Stevens, don’t have a lot of depth and end up being a bit annoying to listen to for older viewers.

Final Thoughts

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="imdb" url="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5884052" ]

The Pokémon Detective Pikachu movie is the first hyper-realistic one ever created and produced for the big screen. While the anime is full of cute or strange but quirky Pokémon, Detective Pikachu really demonstrates just how different they really would be in real life. As a Pokémon movie, this hyper-realistic version, though lacking battles, is interesting and fun to watch for all ages. Die-hard Pokémon fans will probably watch it regardless, but it’s most likely not everyone’s can of soda pop (Price: 300 Pokédollar)

Childhood Friend + Fantasy Fish Girl = Girl of Your Dreams

Game Info:

  • System: Nintendo Switch, PC (Steam)
  • Publisher: Sekai Games
  • Developer: COSEN
  • Release Date: February 28, 2019

Who it Caters to

If you have ever been interested in dating sims or casual visual novel gameplay, then My Girlfriend is a Mermaid!? may be the next game on your list of games to play. It is the Nintendo Switch port of a game that was originally released in English on Steam Called She is a Mermaid. For all of you gamers out there who are looking to take a break from hard core gaming for a little bit of moe and reading, this may be the game for your break.

What to Expect

If you like moe games like Nekopara, My Girlfriend is a Mermaid!? is similar with its moe focus on mermaids because who doesn’t love mermaids? If you have heard of it but haven’t played it or haven’t heard of it at all, you may want to know more about this mermaid moe game, read on!

My Girlfriend is a Mermaid!? Trailer

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J9UhKdeq-xM&w=560&h=315]
[ad_top2 class="mt40 mb40"]

Story

The story follows Hiroto as he returns to his countryside home from his life in the city only to discover his childhood friend, Ion, in a pond as a mermaid. Apparently Ion became a mermaid while he was gone. Then Hiroto meets Petakko, an amnesiac mermaid, and Rin, a priestess who cares for the mermaids but can experience trouble due to her split personality. There’s something about the mermaid legend that Hiroto finds himself in the middle of and it all seems to be tied to Ion.

Gameplay

If you are unfamiliar with visual novels, then you will be surprised to find that much of the gameplay for My Girlfriend is a Mermaid!? is text based and reading focused. You shouldn’t really expect much action, although My Girlfriend is a Mermaid!? does have parts where you can make choices and decisions during the story, which is more than we can say about games like Nekopara. Since there is the inclusion of decision making, the story branches a little, though it’s quite evident the main storyline is Ion’s. The writing in My Girlfriend is a Mermaid!? is really well done, especially for a visual novel of its calibur. It’s well written and quite eloquently narrated. We don’t usually see visual novels this well written for the price point, especially as a port. Usually games like these for Nintendo Switch are ports of mobile games with pretty mediocre translations and proofreading work. The graphics for My Girlfriend is a Mermaid!? are pretty nice and resemble that of Nekopara except for the constantly heaving behemoths of the neko girls. While the beginning is actually just plot dumps, if you can keep moving, you can enjoy more CGs and not just decorative pages with mass amounts of text. The girls are well designed and their moe factor is really high. Let’s not forget that Ion is just about half naked right at the beginning, which shall appeal to all of ya’ll moe gamers out there. The voices are pretty OK. We found Ion pretty hard to listen to most times, but aside from that, we cannot complain. The music was OK as well. Nothing here will astound you, but it’s decent for the game. We expected worse, honestly, so we were impressed in our own way.
[ad_middle class="mt40 mb40"]

Honey's Gameplay Consensus:

In the end, My Girlfriend is a Mermaid!? is an OK game though well done in some ways. The narrative can be quite long, drawn out, and repetitive (kiss the ground), but it was impressive in other ways. If you want to play a visual novel, My Girlfriend is a Mermaid!? may be worth your time, but overall, it’s not changing the visual novel genre. The girls are plenty moe and their CGs are great. If you ever wanted to date a mermaid girl, this could be the game for you. To us, we thought it was only OK and in the end, it was a bit difficult to get through, but always take opinions with a grain of salt.

Honey's Pros:

  • Voiced in Japanese and Korean
  • Well written and proofread compared to other visual novels
  • Nice graphics and CGs
  • Girls are very moe and cute! Very fun bunch of characters, especially the tsundere Ion.

Honey's Cons:

  • Long and unnecessary narratives

Honey's Final Verdict:

Well, it wasn’t long, but there’s our take on My Girlfriend is a Mermaid!?. It’s not outstanding, but it’s fun and another interesting take on the moe gaming genre. For boobs, mermaid moe and an OK story, My Girlfriend is a Mermaid!? may be the right visual novel game for you. If you aren’t a fan of visual novels or you want a real story, My Girlfriend is a Mermaid!? may not be for you. Are there any readers out there interested in the game? Have you picked up a copy for yourself yet? Share your thoughts about the game below!

Aya Uchida Shares in the Second Interview as ANiUTa’s Artist of the Month Her Path to Become a Voice Actress

[en]What You Need to Know: [/en][es]Lo que necesitas saber: [/es]

  • Aya applied for her first voice acting audition when she was in her last year of junior high school.
  • “After graduating from high school, I enrolled in a voice acting school, but I thought it would be difficult to become a voice actress by doing just that, so I also went to a few training schools. One of the offices for one of those training schools I went to gave me my first job. That job was Oden-kun, and became my debut work.”
  • Thanks to her appearance on Oden-kun, Aya managed to secure a contract with an agency and finally started on the path to becoming a professional voice actress. The first time she played a named character was in the 2009 anime Sora wo Miageru Shoujo no Hitomi ni Utsuru Sekai by Kyoto Animation.
  • “My hometown was in the countryside of Gunma, so I grew up in a place that was rich with nature. When I was a kid, I would spend my time running around through hills and fields. I loved to play outside. But, I also had a shy side, so while I was carefree when playing in the hills, I’d suddenly get embarrassed when I was in front of other people. [laughter] I think I had the most fun when I was playing by myself.”
  • Then, Aya got her first starring role in Kiddy GiRL-AND. There’s one more thing Aya did for the first time in Kiddy GiRL-AND, and that was singing a character song.
  • “The first songs I sang were the opening theme Baby universe day and the ending theme Taiyou to Tsuki.”
  • When Kiddy GiRL-AND was over, the producer, Mr. Saito, called Aya about yet another anime he was involved with. And that was Love Live!.

Isekai Anime - Winter 2019 (Expectation Vs. Reality: How Isekai Anime in 2019 Faired!)

$

0

Introduction

We’ve arrived at the midpoint of the 2019 anime season and we now have some time to look back at some of the show we discussed in the isekai genre. There were three anime series that we wrote first impressions about and now that those shows have either ended or entered their long breaks—one in particular won’t be back till possibly the end of the year—we can see if our original thoughts on these shows were solid or if they ended up being just down right horrible. The following shows we aren’t going to review—at least not here—but will instead just reflect if we were too hasty in saying these titles could be great or average. Time to see our past decisions in an article we’ve titled Expectation Vs. Reality: How Isekai Anime in 2019 Faired! Note, these aren’t all the isekai shows that aired but some of the heavy hitters in the genre.

1. Sword Art Online: Alicization Arc (Season 3)

  • Genres: Action, Game, Fantasy, Sci-fi, Isekai
  • Air Date: October 7 2018

“Where… is this…?” Once he opens his eyes, Kirito realizes that he has done a full dive into a fantasy-looking virtual world. While he is uncertain about his memories that he had right before he logged in, he begins to roam about looking for a clue. Finally arriving at the base of a massive black tree called Gigas Cedar, Kirito meets one single young boy. “I’m Eugeo. Nice to meet you Kirito.” Even though this boy is an NPC within this fantasy world, he has the same range and depth of emotions that humans have. While deepening his friendship with Eugeo, Kirito is searching for a way to logout of this world. All the while, a certain memory begins to slowly return from the depths of his mind. That memory is of Kirito and Eugeo during their childhood, running about hills and fields––––the problem is that this is not a memory that originally existed. Furthermore, in that memory, there was the figure of a young girl with blonde hair together with Kirito and Eugeo. Her name is Alice. Her name is something that he must remember at all costs––

What We Got:

Following the events of season 2 of Sword Art Online, all seem relatively quiet for Kirito and his friends. Kirito is now focused on school and his future rather than saving online worlds or those in danger of dying in a virtual landscape. As a side project, Kirito has been assisting Kikuoka with a new virtual project that aims to deliver a new experience of VR existence by inserting real-world souls into a virtual world. Unfortunately, things take a turn for the worst when Kirito and Asuna are attacked by an old enemy and Kirito is stabbed by some unknown poison. When our hero of Aincrad awakens, he finds himself not in the real world anymore but a fantasy themed world that seems more real than even Sword Art Online was! What will happen to Kirito and can he find a way back home? Our original thoughts with Sword Art Online were quite realistic. Despite Sword Art Online’s huge popularity we’ve always had mixed feelings with the series due in large part to its high number of clichés, reused tricks and often mind-boggling story elements that go one way to another with extreme haste. While not perfect, Sword Art Online: Alicization actually turned out pretty darn good! There were many moments we groaned out loud when Kirito would find a new possible girl to love or when he pulled off his award winning—insert sarcasm here—saving graces out of thin air. Yet, Sword Art Online: Alicization relied a lot less on old tropes and pulled off some new tricks that pleased us here at Honey’s Anime. Eugeo and Kirito’s relationship really stole the show though feeling genuine and honest which hasn’t really been seen in Sword Art Online. With some truly great moments—and some truly sad ones too—Sword Art Online: Alicization was a solid season and we get to see how the second half of it fairs possibly by the end of the year or before.

2. Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari

  • Genres: Fantasy, Adventure, Isekai
  • Air Date: January 9 2019

His dignity, honor, money, objective… The hero of the shield had lost everything. What awaits him as he rises from the depths of his despair?

What We Got:

Naofumi Iwatani has enjoyed what seemed like a simple—albeit—boring life so far but has few complaints. A world changing event occurs for Naofumi when he picks up a strange book that whisks him away to an unfamiliar land alongside several others. The four strangers learn they have been summoned as heroes each representing a powerful weapon with legendary status. Naofumi at first is taken aback with surprise and glee at this rather strange turn of events but soon learns he is given the worst weapon…the shield. Now as the Shield Hero, Naofumi learns he is unable to attack and soon realizes is considered the weakest of all the heroes! While Naofumi broods on this reality he doesn’t yet realize that life plans on giving him even worse trials as he begins his journey in this foreign place. When you think of isekai anime you probably go into the same mindset as us and many anime viewers. Isekai has always suffered from tropes that tend to repeat as if on a constant loop you can’t ever stop. Thankfully, Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari has performed a surprising move and has become easily one of the best isekai we’ve seen in some time! Filled with varying emotions and relying less on isekai themes and more on MMORPG concepts, Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari has become the prime example of how to take a reused style and make it your own! Currently, Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari is still going on—currently at episode 17—but we doubt with every fiber of our being that this show will fail to deliver a spectacular season. Our thoughts were pretty spot on with Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari its been good from our first impressions and still is.

3. Tensei Shitara Slime Datta Ken

  • Genres: Isekai, Fantasy
  • Air Date: October 2 2018

'My life as a slime has begun.' Before he can realize it, salaryman Satoru Mikami is reincarnated in another world. However, the form he takes on is a slime. He befriends a magical being and freely using the skills he's acquired, the story of a slime who solves various problems begins now.

What We Got:

Satoru Mikami is an almost 40-year-old male who—despite his best attempts—is single still and lives the life of a bachelor. Despite the harsh love life Satoru has, he continued trying his best until an incident changed his life for him. Protect his friend Tamura from a killer, Satoru dies and finds himself drifting in a strange realm. Satoru reawakens not in his original body but in something soft and foreign. Satoru realizes he has been reincarnated and has become a slime monster! At first this new body—or lack of one—scares him but soon he realizes that with his will power and special abilities, Satoru isn’t a normal slime but something much more! Forgoing his old existence, Satoru gets a new name—Rimuru—and readies himself for a new life as a slime! Tensei Shitara Slime Datta Ken was another isekai that when we first heard of it our eyes rolled in annoyance. The isekai genre has been done so many different ways now but always ends up becoming the same style of story over and over again. Tensei Shitara Slime Datta Ken however seems to take pride in the isekai we know and tolerate and runs wild with the genre. Instead of trying so hard to be different, Tensei Shitara Slime Datta Ken relishes on keeping isekai themes at the fore front of the story but makes it almost laughable as comedy melds perfectly with fantasy. Watching Rimuru parade around beautiful women in a body that is just gel makes us laugh and when he learns some new power by literally absorbing it into his body we smile waiting to see how things will turn out from there. Tensei Shitara Slime Datta Ken is a fun anime series that from start to finish realizes the problems with the genre and never corrects them but makes light of them instead. We have recommended non-isekai fans Tensei Shitara Slime Datta Ken and have noticed many actually love the show after the first few episodes! Definitely try it out or read our review, to see if Tensei Shitara Slime Datta Ken might change your mind on isekai anime.

Final Thoughts

All in all, we are pretty happy that our original thoughts matched up almost perfectly with the reality of these series. It shows that instead of becoming jaded anime viewers, we still can appreciate shows even if they sometimes miss the mark or don’t start off with the best first few episodes. Did you guys and girls find some shows that you initially liked this season turning worse or possibly better as they finished? Comment below to tell us and see if your thoughts aligned with ours! Top 5 Hinomaruzumou (Hinomaru Sumo) Scenes

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" bookwalker_id="" cdj_product_id="" text="crunchyroll" url="https://www.crunchyroll.com/hinomaru-sumo/episode-20-onimaru-kunitsuna-and-dojikiri-yasutsuna-go-again-781825" ]

Hinomaruzumou was one of the top hits from the fall 2018 lineup. It’s one of the very few hit anime series in the last generation or two (or maybe even three) to portray Japan’s native sport of sumo. It tells the tale of a motley crew of six teenagers from Chiba prefecture who start from a one man team, to one of the best teams in the nation. All of that is thanks to the titular Hinomaru and its supporting cast. So, from this series, what are some of its top 5 scenes? And one warning, THERE’S GOING TO BE SPOILERS!

[ad_top2 class="mt40 mb40"]

5. Buffet Challenge from Episode 11

This is probably one of the series’ most comedic moments as you get to see Odachi High School’s sumo team bonding in such a manner for the first time. This particular scene goes hand-in-hand with sumo’s image of its athletes being bulky and eating a lot, so they go to a yakiniku buffet called Stamina Jiro, a spoof of Stamina Taro, a real life restaurant chain. They take an all you can eat challenge where if they can eat everything offered, then it’s on the house. Naturally, the manager wants them to lose so they can pay but in the end, they win the challenge and end up getting banned from the restaurant. It shows that you can’t underestimate the power of a hungry sumo.

4. Kirihito’s Challenge from Episode 4

Kirihito served as the brains of the team and other than Hinomaru, they didn’t know much about him and if his bite was as big as his bark. As a result, he shows that he’s for real by challenging all members including Hinomaru. He indirectly challenges the rest of the team by coaching Kei, the physically weakest and least athletic member, to beating everyone except for Hinomaru. However, Kirihito decides to challenge Hinomaru himself. To top it off, he even beats Hinomaru with his own move! It shows that he knows what it takes to coach them and he knows what he’s talking about. As a result, this scene also gives a breakthrough as to why Kirihito can’t physically be active with the team due to his asthma, which won’t let him compete for more than 20 seconds. It also shows why he relates to Hinomaru (who is hindered by his height) and why he wants him to succeed.

[ad_middle]

3. Yuma and Shinya Making Up from Episode 11

Yes, we’re exploring episode 11 again but this time, we’re giving a much more serious scene. Concerned with Yuma’s motivation, Hinomaru thought it would be a good idea to pair him up with Shinya, the team captain, for some training. However, Yuma’s wall isn’t due to a lack of motivation, but how he’s ashamed of how he treated Shinya prior to the series. Through this scene, not only do you see Yuma feel a genuine sense of remorse for his delinquent ways, you see the good side of Shinya as well. Shinya never demanded any apologies and felt that Yuma joining the sumo team was more than enough. As we said in previous articles, this scene teaches its audience that while it’s good to have an open mind, it’s even better to have an open heart, and this is what this scene demonstrates best.

2. Kirihito Making His Debut From Episode 22

As we shared in entry number 4, Kirihito, despite being only a student, serves as the school’s official coach, but it also gives him an opportunity to serve as a reserve member in case one of the 5 varsity members can’t compete. After Kei injured himself in a previous match, Kirihito decides to make his debut by taking on a physically superior sumo wrestler. His opponent discovers that Kirihito has to finish fast and tries to use that to his advantage. However, thanks to Hinomaru’s encouragement, Kirihito manages to beat his opponent and feel victory in the ring after a long time.

1. Hinomaru’s Final Victory From Episode 24

After many trials and tribulations, Hinomaru faces the biggest challenge of his high school sumo career against Kuze, who is considered the best high school sumo wrestler in the country. For awhile, Kuze’s father, a famous yokozuna, banned him from competition due to a prior match with Hinomaru as children. Touched by his motivation, his father gives him his blessing to compete at the nationals. Kuze squashes through the competition and intimidates just about everyone but Hinomaru. After a hard fought battle, Hinomaru comes up on top. Yes, this victory has everything you can think of but more. Since this match took place in the team competition as opposed to the individual competition, so overall, this victory was not just for Hinomaru, but for his school as a whole to share. Though Hinomaru was eliminated in the individual matches, this match was his ultimate redemption to prove that he’s not only pro material but yokozuna material as his victory allowed him to become a pro despite not fulfilling the height requirement.

Final Thoughts

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" bookwalker_id="" cdj_product_id="" text="crunchyroll" url="http://www.crunchyroll.com/hinomaru-sumo/episode-13-100-yen-coin-training-777930" ]

Combat sports like sumo, boxing, MMA, or judo may be individual in nature, but when you watch Hinomaruzumou, it masterfully shows that it’s a team sport in its own way. Nobody can become a champion on their own and it takes great coaching and teammates to get there. Not everybody can win, but when you do win, it is thanks to the support of your teammates and that is what the majority of our chosen scenes demonstrates when it comes to Hinomaruzumou.

Lapis x Labyrinth - Announcement Trailer (Nintendo Switch, PS4) (EU - English)

Who it Caters to

Jumping into the mysterious world of Lapis x Labyrinth is a wild and crazy ride, full of secrets and enemies looking to ruin your fun. In this ARPG you’ll be assembling a team of warriors who band together to take out unrelenting enemies in a dungeon-style approach, where tactical thinking is needed and insane action unfolds. Nippon Ichi Software has created a title that’s vibrant in its visual aesthetics while delivering an undeniably entertaining experience, that just about any fan of the genre will gravitate towards.

What to Expect

With over 8 different character classes, 4.000 unique combinations with regards to team building, and an abundance of treasures to discover, Lapis x Labyrinth is full of exciting adventures. The way you attack the enemy revolves around a stacking mechanic known as “Dango”, a style in which each one of your team members is stacked on top of one another and attack in unison. You’ll be able to swap between them in real time which grants you the ability to pull off insane combos, and strategic set plays in order to take down the incredibly strong enemies that lie ahead. In typical RPG fashion, your main agenda is to level up your team as much as possible in order to keep up with the difficulty, and to gather enough resources to craft stronger weapons. Throughout your Labyrinth adventures there will be moments where quick decision making becomes the norm, and equipping the necessary items becomes imperative to survive. It’s an all out war in the Golden Forest, but do you have what it takes to win?
[ad_top2 class="mt40 mb40"]

Visuals

One of the more defining features of Nippon Ichi Software titles comes in their visual execution, and how well crafted their design is pertaining to characters and stage layouts. In Lapis x Labyrinth this is no different as every stage you embark on is meticulously designed to capture a different feeling, and the enemies that inhabit the area behave in relation to that design. What’s really striking is the frantic “Fever Mode”, which is enabled once your team accumulate enough meter, and that’s when the visuals really pop. It’s a cornucopia of colors that hit you from every corner of the screen, an impressive display of gems and coins that soar from left to right as you feverishly attempt to inflict more damage on the hordes of enemies that approach. The UI is simple enough that you won’t feel overwhelmed and so clean that you often forget a UI even exists. You have your health meter along with your MP and Fever meter located at the top left, which give you an indication of what’s available and when to go nuts. This is a very notable feature in most NIS titles that we tend to love most. Simplicity is luxury, they say.

Sound, Music

Just as the gameplay is frantic and menacing at times, so too is the sound and music that accompanies it all. To create a game that’s satisfying, the sound and music must play in harmony to the gameplay, as it helps to set the tone moving forward. Immersiveness is one way to describe it because throughout your time in each area, there are a variety of sounds that help to breathe life into the experience. The music compliments the fast-paced tempo and never grows stale even after hearing it several times, just because you’re so involved in everything that’s happening that it all just melds together wonderfully. We can’t help but point out how much we like the character sound effects as well, with every groan, scream, and snarky comment that comes out of their mouth adding more entertainment to the mix.

Gameplay

Lapis x Labyrinth is an incredibly boisterous title that never fails to deliver in its gameplay department, because there’s just so much to unlock the more you progress. You start off the game by being introduced to the mayor and he explains how the village is falling on hard times, and is in desperate need of cash. From there, your objective is to sign up for quests at the guild and defeat as many enemies as possible during your expedition. What’s cool about the battle system in Lapis x Labyrinth is that you have a 4 character stack that somewhat resembles the tower form in Disgaea, and allows you to perform simultaneous attacks with your team members. What’s special here is that, depending on how your stack is organized, each member will perform a different attack, and so this is where a lot of the strategy comes into play over the long term. Every class will have their own unique characteristics that can aid you in certain situations, along with weapons that you gather by unlocking special treasure chests after completing a dungeon.
These treasure chests can be obtained throughout your journey, and as you continue to build your treasure combo meter, that allows you to potentially unlock more powerful tools for each of your characters. Every dungeon is organized in such a way where you’re never able to explore everything on your first attempt, and so you’re encouraged to go back at times to gather hidden treasure chests for more benefits. There are various floors that you’ll need to clear, and If you happen to linger around for too long on one of them, then the enemies become invincible, which results in an immediate death. To elaborate further on the Fever Mode mentioned earlier, the way it works is quite simple: the more you continue to build the meter it allows the team to unleash powerful attacks while invincible, giving you the advantage over the enemy. This Fever Mode also grants you buffs which are immediate and will help you to clear floors a lot faster. It’s very easy to build meter in the game if you relentlessly attack enemies and keep your teammates alive at all times. Equipping healing items pre-battle is important since you don’t uncover any during your expedition, so be sure not to forget! You’ll regain health after every successful fever mode, but it’s not something you want to rely on too much, especially when quests grow increasingly harder over time.
[ad_middle class="mt40 mb40"]

Honey's Gameplay Consensus:

Lapis x Labyrinth is quite the lengthy game since there are plenty of quests to embark on, and a lot of creative ways to explore the games mechanics. Experimenting with every character class will definitely provide a more rewarding experience since you’ll be able to better determine the right stacks to better assist you in tough boss battles. Knowing how weapons work is also imperative since a lot do have certain buffs that are attached to them, such as being strong against countering bug attacks, or strong against beast types. It’s all about weapon management and knowing when to swap out so that you get the best results possible. One thing to note as well is that throughout the game, you’ll be able to use the cash gathered to exchange for more powerful buffs for weapons at the Trader, so we highly encourage taking advantage of it once you unlock it. One gripe that we do have with the game though comes directly from its treasure system, where we feel that it’s too random at times. After completing quests and have the choice to pick between 3 chests, we wish that we were given the option to just choose what we wanted. Oftentimes we’d receive the same object and it led to us having an inventory filled with poor weapons, which really didn’t help at all. Ultimately, we had to travel to the Trader to rid of all of the useless items, which in a way helped us to buy things faster, but in the end it still turned us off a little bit.

Honey's Pros:

  • Easy to use controls and flashy action make this one a must play.
  • Kick ass and take names!
  • Those who’ve dabbled with Disgaea will find the “Dango” stacking system to feel comforting.
  • You’ll spend hours just trying to create the right team, plus you can customize battle options or character voicing, among many other things.

Honey's Cons:

  • The gameplay can feel repetitive since you’re really just grinding through dungeons filled with tougher monsters. This is compensated with the various customization features though.
  • We wish that the treasure system wasn’t so random at times, and that we could pick the weapons we want.

Honey's Final Verdict:

Although it’s not a perfect game, Lapis x Labyrinth is still an astonishingly fun title that never stops challenging you. Even when you think your team is well equipped to tackle what’s ahead, the game throws a curveball at you and now new strategies must be implemented. One surprising thing that stood out to us that we failed to mention earlier was that, in spite of all the flashy visuals and frantic action happening on screen, we rarely hit any framerate issues, which is obviously a huge plus. Even more reason to pick this up and play! We hope you enjoyed our review, and remember that for all things gaming, be sure to keep it locked right here on Honey’s Anime.

Here's Why You Need to Watch Dr. Stone

[ad_top1 class="mb40"]

Riichiro Inagaki’s Dr. Stone is set to make its premiere. So, where would you recognize Inagaki’s name from? He’s the main writer to Eyeshield 21. As for the artist, the manga is illustrated by South Korean manhwa artist Mujik Park. To top it off, the original manga series recently won the Shogakukan Manga Award for the Shounen category. So, what is Dr. Stone about? Based on what has been portrayed in the original manga, one day, the world is overwhelmed by a mysterious light and just about everyone is turned into statues. A few millennia later, some people are free from the spell. Naturally, one of the people free from the spell is our main character, Senkuu Ishigami, a science wiz who teams up with his best friend, Tajiu, to create a formula to save the rest of humanity. Senkuu is driven to help rebuild the world. However, Tsukasa, a fellow teenager and trained MMA fighter, wants to use the present opportunity to create a new world without technology with how it has negatively affected humans prior to everyone turning into stone. As a result of his contrasting viewpoints with Senkuu’s, they become enemies. So, it all comes down to this very question, why You NEED to watch Dr. Stone?

Challenges The Shounen and Post-Apocalyptic Genre

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="NEOBK-12917" text="" url="" ]

As opposed to the typical action oriented Shounen Jump titles we’ve been getting the past 30 years from Dragon Ball to Boruto, Dr. Stone is more about brain over brawn. Senkuu knows he has no chance of taking on Tsukasa on a man-to-man fight, so he uses his brain to find a solution in defeating him unlike Gokuu, Naruto, Yuusuke, and Ichigo. Tsukasa’s motivations as a villain do make sense and are relatable to audiences unlike lets say Frieza’s or Toguro’s. While contrasting ideas have always been a part of conflict in storytelling, Dr. Stone in the Shounen genre takes things with a fresh spin. Not only that, it breathes new life into the whole post-apocalyptic genre as well. As opposed to the trendy zombie apocalypse or post-nuclear war we see these days, Dr. Stone’s approach to it gives a unique sense of optimism right from the beginning. Not only that, the causes behind what caused humanity to turn into stone is still a mystery. As opposed to the world going to Hell, nature and animals thrived in peace so when humanity comes back. They’re practically given a clean slate but without the technological advances they had and it’s about bringing that back along with mankind. However, it comes back to whether or not humans really deserve a fresh chance which is what makes this series appealing.

Edgy Art

We can all agree that the style of manhwa, or Korean comics, have striking similarities and distinguishing differences from the Japanese. Compared to most Shounen titles, Dr. Stone has a very edgy style that can be more akin to Seinen, or mature comics. The original manga does a great job of knowing when to demonstrate comedy, and when to demonstrate intensity. As the main character, Senkuu is certainly the ultimate instrument of showing off all of those extremities. There are times when he is drawn to show his comedic moments, his serious moments, and there are instances that find ways to balance those qualities that are difficult to put into words. Based on what has been shown in the trailers, TMS Entertainment has done a great job of being faithful to the design and all the qualities that make the original manga appealing. The colors provided also do an amazing job of capturing the original series and knowing TMS, they will do make original fans proud, and attract new fans.

Top Notch Voice Cast

Based on what we have been given on paper so far, this anime further looks promising with its selected seiyuu cast. Playing Senkuu is Yuusuke Kobayashi, who you may know as the voice of Arslan from Arslan Senki, Sekito from All Out, and Ren from Monsuto Anime. Considering these are all characters who are intelligent, unassuming, and young, he seems to be a perfect fit. As for Tajiu, one of the supporting characters, we have Makoto Furukawa, who you may know as the voice of Kakei Shigou from Aldnoah.Zero, Wong Shorter from Banana Fish, and he played numerous roles in Gate. As for Tsukasa, the main villain, we have Yuuichi Nakamura, also famous as the voice of Silat from Berserk, Hodr from Break Blade, and Toyohisa from Drifters. Considering the feral nature of Toyohisa, he is a great fit for Tsukasa.

Final Thoughts

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="NEOBK-2260868" text="" url="" ]

Unfortunately, we can’t give much info on the music at this time but all we can hope is that it will find a way to balance its serene and intense atmosphere. Considering that the manga is still only two years old and ten volumes at the present writing of this article, we can’t expect too much in terms of episode count. However, if this anime is aired sporadically in the same vein of Attack on Titan and My Hero Academia, then we should expect this anime to be on the air for some time. For now, all we can promise is for those sick of Shounen or post-apocalyptic material, this is certainly a new and refreshing take on both genres for audiences to enjoy.

Why Is It Called a Shoujo-Ai Anime? [Definition; Meaning]

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="B07HZN874S" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]

When it comes to watching anime, there are a lot of confusing terms and jargon that get thrown around a lot. While you may know some, even as a fan it’s hard to know all of them. If you’re looking to find something specific to suit your taste, it’s important to learn the terms associated with it to make your search easier - and the same goes for learning what you might want to avoid. So the latest addition to our Otaku Dictionary to help make this easier is a term that you have probably heard but may not know the exact meaning of - shoujo-ai! So why is an anime called a shoujo-ai anime? What makes it shoujo-ai and not just a slice of life, romantic comedy, or even yuri? When do we use the term shoujo-ai instead of one of those terms? And what can you expect from an anime that is listed as a shoujo-ai? If you’re curious to know exactly why an anime may be classified as shoujo-ai, keep reading! We are here to answer all of these questions.

[ad_top2 class="mt40"]

Follow the Recipe

So what is a shoujo-ai exactly? Basically, it’s a genre of anime that has a love story between two girls as a focus point. There may even be other heterosexual relationships on the side, but the focus relationship must be with two females. You may also know the term yuri, which also refers to a relationship between two girls. However, yuri will have actual sex or nudity in it. It’s important for an anime to be classed as shoujo-ai that no sex happens on the screen. Shoujo-ai anime can still be sexy, but more often than not, they’re more about being cute and sweet.

Strawberry Panic

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="ZMBZ-2701" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 26 " aired=" Apr. 2006 - Sep. 2006 "]

Strawberry Panic is about a student named Aoi Nagisa who transfers to a Catholic all-girls’ school. It’s hard to be the transfer student, so in order to make friends and find her place at the school, Aoi has to join clubs, go to class, and meet new people. She begins to capture the attention of Shizuma Hanazono, the Etoile of her school and finds herself pulled into the hierarchy of the schools. Shizuma starts to spend more time with Aoi, and the closer they become, the more of her past Aoi is willing to share with the other girl. Much shoujo-ai anime are set in some kind of school setting, telling a love story between two students first discovering their feelings. It’s a classic story and does well in the genre. Strawberry Panic is one of the most famous shoujo-ai titles that follow this formula. Set in an all-girls’ school, it eliminates the need to have male characters at all. There is no one to get in the way of a female relationship developing. Strawberry Panic’s love story happens slowly, exploring Aoi and Shizuma’s romance as it develops over time and they get to know one another. It shows the base idea for a shoujo-ai doesn’t have to be complicated to be good.

Create Some Romance

The most important element of any shoujo-ai is romance! Otherwise, it would just be a friendship anime, of which there are already many out there. So in order to be classified as a shoujo-ai, the girls in question have to develop something more than friendship. In some shoujo-ai, this may happen very slowly and the relationship is the conclusion of the story. In others, it can happen very quickly and the rest of the show explores their romance. Either way, the love story is key to a shoujo-ai being a shoujo-ai, and the better the romance, the better the anime tends to be.

Yagate Kimi Ni Naru (Bloom into You)

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="ZMXZ-12661" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 13 " aired=" Oct. 2018 - Dec. 2018 "]

Yagate Kimi Ni Naru begins with Yuu, a girl that loves to read shoujo manga and imagine herself being swept off her feet in a romance. But when a male student finally does confess to her, she feels...nothing. Upon entering high school, she still is confused by her feelings. There, she sees the student council president Nanami also turn down a boy. Inspired by her maturity, Yuu goes to Nanami for advice and help. Things don’t go how she could have ever guessed though when the next person to confess to Yuu is Nanami herself! Yagate Kimi Ni Naru is a new shoujo-ai that already left a huge impression on the genre, jumping to the top of the ratings in less than a year. And with good reason; the romance between Yuu and Nanami is really beautiful. Yagate Kimi Ni Naru shows viewers Yuu’s backstory as a hopeless romantic but uninterested in men, introduces Nanami into her life, shows how the start their relationship, and then explores what happens between them. It tells a full story that makes you really invested in the characters and their love and does it tastefully with great animation. Yagate Kimi Ni Naru is a great example of just what a shoujo-ai typically is, and how it can be a great genre.

Add Your Own Flair!

Just like any other romance story, once you have the base idea, you can run with it and create something original. While a lot of shoujo-ai does stick to being a slice of life romance often set in a school, sometimes it branches out into something else entirely. And those anime are just as much shoujo-ai as the school romances! They have the base elements - a love story that happens between two females, grows and evolves into some kind of relationship, and keeps things clean on the screen. But what happens when you add in something that isn’t just a school setting and a couple of girls exploring their sexuality?

Mnemosyne: Mnemosyne Musume-tachi (Rin: Daughters of Mnemosyne)

[sourceLink asin="B01GWDSOY2" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 6 " aired=" Feb. 2008 - Jul. 2008 "]

The answer is anime like Mnemosyne: Mnemosyne Musume-tachi. This shoujo-ai follows a private eye named Rin, who also happens to be immortal. It’s quite convenient considering all the trouble and danger she finds herself in that particular line of work. She’s suffered countless horrible and violent deaths over her long life, but since eating the Time Fruit she always comes back for more. But things start to change when she is pursued by someone targeting immortal women like her, and it seems that her life is actually on the line for once. That may not sound like a romance, and that’s because it isn’t just a love story. On the contrary, Mnemosyne: Mnemosyne Musume-tachi is a sci-fi action anime that also has a love story within its bigger story. Many anime do this, but usually, it’s a heterosexual love story. Mnemosyne: Mnemosyne Musume-tachi is not, and during the course of the anime, Rin develops a relationship with another girl. Thus even though Mnemosyne: Mnemosyne Musume-tachi is not just a romance anime, it is still a shoujo-ai because the love story is between two girls, and still important enough to be remembered. It also pushes just how far it can go on the screen without showing actual sex, while still being quite sexy. It still has the criteria, it’s just using them in a different package!

Final Thoughts

Do you feel like you’ve learned more about shoujo-ai anime? We hope that now you know more about what to expect when you see the genre listed, especially as it is a lot less common than many other genres of anime. Don’t let the term confuse you or make you think you’re getting something you’re not (or not getting something you are). In short, shoujo-ai anime will have a romance between two girls, but there won’t be any sex on screen at least. Usually, it’s a chaste relationship between girls, and sometimes just a very strong friendship that can be read as something more. So there you have it; that's why this specific genre of anime is called shoujo-ai! Do you watch shoujo-ai anime? Did you learn anything new from this article? Is there anything you would like to add that we may have missed? Are you ready to plunge into one of the shoujo-ai anime we used as an example? Is there another otaku term you would like to see defined in a similar article? Please drop us a comment, we would love to hear from you!

Rage 2 - PC/Steam Review

Like Far Cry, but less appealing and more boring...

RAGE 2 – Official Launch Trailer

Who it Caters to

So you like Mad Max, huh? In that case, Rage 2 is a perfect game for you since it perfectly conveys the most iconic characteristics of its dystopian world: the gritty atmosphere, the desert cyberpunk aesthetics, and the violence. This is a game that takes the "last man standing" trope and mixes it with a story about an oppressed group of people fighting back to annihilate the tyrant leader, a war that's as cruel and brutal as you could imagine. Without a fast travel option and a lot of skills to investigate, we can't quite say Rage 2 is an easy game, but not everything that shines is gold!

What to Expect

Nowadays, there are a lot of open-world FPS games for you to play. In fact, post-apocalyptic settings have become the norm, and Bethesda's Fallout may not be the #1 go-to option anymore. A few months ago, we had Far Cry New Dawn, and that's a game you should have in mind when analyzing Rage 2. Rage 2 follows the same premise as any Far Cry game: you're the hero of the story, but you can win a war if you play alone. That's why you need to convince a few influential figures to join your cause, doing enough quests to win their hearts while also exploring the world around you just in case you find any events to help you level up, earn some money, etc. The problem is that games like Far Cry shine thanks to their living world full of easter eggs and hidden content... while Rage 2's world feels impressively boring.
[ad_top2 class="mt40 mb40"]

Story

Just by looking at the intro scene and how the tutorial unfolds, you get an idea of how brutal Rage 2 can be. Following the events of the first Rage and the 99942 Apophis asteroid impact in 2029, this is a war between those humans who want to be left alone and just continue breeding and subsisting (a.k.a the Ark Survivors) versus the Authority, a highly militarized group of cyborgs who control the Wasteland and will do anything to stay on top of the food chain. Following a surprise attack commanded by General Cross, the Authority boss himself, you play as Walker, the only survivor of the Rangers of Vineland and the adoptive nephew/niece of the group's leader, Erwina Prowley. After witnessing her death, a previously recorded message tells you to go meet Prowley's peers and set Project Dagger in motion, something that should put an end to the Authority, once and for all.
Before facing General Cross to decide the Wasteland's future, you need to pay a visit to other settlements, help these people, but also make yourself stronger. That's why exploring is so important in this game, because there are a lot of abilities you can get (and later upgrade) by finding Ark technology scattered around the desert. Although you can finish the game pretty soon if you only do the main quests, there are a lot of side-missions and story events around the map. The problem is that, even if the plot is rather straightforward, it's not that easy for you to understand everything around you or even feel interested in doing what you need to do. Maybe it's just us, but Walker is far from being an interesting protagonist, and the rest of the main cast feels dull too. All in all, we can say that Rage's lore is indeed very interesting if you take some time to investigate it, but the lack of environmental storytelling and all the gameplay problems you find in Rage 2 makes it hard to actually enjoy the story as you play.

Visuals

Let's start with one of the game's best aspects! Rage 2 looks beautiful, and that's enough to make you want to play it. The HUD is clean enough and the character designs are on point most of the times, especially since you can't help but compare everything you see with the Mad Max universe. However, this doesn't mean Rage 2 has the best-looking graphics for an FPS game or that the cutscenes will make you feel like you're watching a movie, so don't come expecting photorealistic models or anything like that.
It's nice to see how the flashy hi-tech combines with the desertic setting in such an awesome way, and how this contrast of colors and textures helps you when actually playing. Too bad sometimes there's nothing around you to look at, but we get that's part of being in a desert... right?

Sound, Music

Along with the gameplay, this is where Rage 2 has more problems. First, we need to talk about how repetitive the dialogue gets when you find an event. When you approach an outpost, for example, your character starts a brief chat about the situation; maybe the first time you're lucky to trigger different options, but once you've been playing a couple hours you'll see every time you start an event you're hearing the same lines, over and over again. There are a lot of "sketchy-looking places", apparently. Speaking of repeating stuff, not having a fast travel feature forces you to drive from point A to point B quest after quest, exploring not only the world but also the music of the game. That's when you notice Rage 2 doesn't have a well-crafted soundtrack to keep you pumped or even interested. Maybe you can ignore the music when there are 10 people shooting at you, sure, but you can't ignore that when you're running around looking for something new to do.
Another problem we encountered was that some voice lines weren't acting as intended. Sometimes you're doing a quest and need someone to give you instructions by intercom, but all you see is the intercom icon even if you can't hear them talking. Sure, there's a chance you never run into these bugs, but we recommend turning the subtitles on just in case.

Gameplay

Did we mention gameplay problems? Let's jump into that, then! After all, this is the main reason you'll be playing Rage 2 or not, so we'll try to explain how we feel about the game. After the brutal first segment and General Cross' introduction, you'd expect a very action-focused game full of violent encounters and a challenging environment. For the most part, every quest where you need to kill people feels indeed rewarding and awesome to play, but everything you do between those combat sections is boring and unpleasant.
Having an open world is not only about a bigger map, but also about adding something to do in it, and that's the biggest problem with Rage 2 since there's not enough activities to keep you busy or motivated. Once you find an outpost, it's extremely fun to run around killing enemies and using your different skills... but when you put them all down, traveling the desert back and forth just to talk to someone becomes a chore. In other games, people choose not to use the fast travel feature because you can run into a lot of unexpected situations; in Rage 2 that's not a choice because there is no such feature, and all events (Authority Sentries, outposts, convoys, the MBTV arena, etc.) lose their fun after the second or third time you play them. As we stated before, Rage 2 follows the Far Cry formula, so you need to do some quests and side-quests in order to recruit people to your cause before confronting the villain. Some of the people you meet have already been introduced in the first Rage back in 2011, but if you haven't played that yet, then there will be a lot of things that won't make that much sense to you. Being a sequel, that's not actually something we'd say it's bad, but playing the first game or at least knowing the events that took place in Rage is a must if you want to enjoy Rage 2 to the fullest.
As for the positive aspects, we definitely loved the gunplay and the fast-paced combat. At first, all enemies look easy and you don't need to abuse your Nanotrites and abilities, but once the Authority unleashes their full potential, that's where the fun is! While you explore the Wasteland, there are some Arks you can find that will grant you new abilities, like dashing, reviving, shattering nearby enemies, etc. These abilities will complement your weapons so you don't have to waste bullets, but there's obviously a cooldown period so you don't go around shattering people in god mode. In terms of weapons, maybe your trusty Sidewinder Pistol is the best option, but who can say no to a fully upgraded Charged Pulse Cannon or a Smart Rocket Launcher? Simply put, Rage 2 is one of those games where you'll have a blast killing hordes of enemies, but you must arm yourself with patience when not pulling the trigger.
[ad_middle class="mt40 mb40"]

Honey's Gameplay Consensus:

Rage 2 is a fitting game for those looking for a good FPS, but the RPG elements and the storytelling are not that well implemented. Like other examples in the genre, Rage 2 is good enough to keep you thrilled for a weekend, but it's far from being the best in what it does. Curiously enough, the first Rage was kind of the same but then all of a sudden it became a cult classic... maybe it's just a matter of time before the same happens to the sequel? We can be sure that this game will be talked about again in 10 years when 99942 Apophis hits the Earth!

Honey's Pros:

  • The gunplay is really good.
  • When it tries to be brutal, IT IS brutal.
  • There’s a lot of customization options, from weapons to skills.

Honey's Cons:

  • Did we say customization options? Well, you can’t customize your appearance (although you can choose Walker’s gender)..
  • Even though the map is considerably big, the world feels empty and deadly boring.
  • It’s hard to feel moved by the story or it’s dull characters.
  • Events and quests are repetitive.

Honey's Final Verdict:

Then again, Rage 2 is another one of those games that is better to borrow them than to buy them, but to each their own! We can only hope for some update that adds more things to do in the Wasteland, but in the meantime, we must settle for the action sequences… So, have you played Rage 2 yet? We would like to know your opinion about it! If you want to share your thoughts, please take a minute and leave us a comment. Oh, and keep browsing Honey’s Anime for more gaming content!
