Fairy Gone Introduction and Story

In the year U.E. 481, the War of Unification swept over the nation of Eastald. Conflict and warfare have drawn society to create intense and massive weapons, Fairy Soldiers, perfectly engineered for battle. After nine years, warring states have brough the great war to an end, leaving Fairy Soldiers without a purpose. Present-day U.E. 505, humankind seems to be recovering the postbellum, resuming village assembly and recreational events but remains politically unstable. We are introduced to a young woman named Marlya, a recruit of an organization called "Dorothea." This organization investigates and terminates fairy-related crimes. These criminal activities have surfaced in response. Now, we observe the experience of these Fairy Soldiers and agents, establishing their place 9 years after the war.

The pacing of Fairy Gone might turn some viewers away. At times, an episode seems to be moving slow, such as characters being stuck in one place for what seems like forever. As such, the rate of how the story moves through the 12 episodes could and should be more equal so that it doesn't feel like we've missed a step.

2. Too Noisy!

Fairy Gone highlights several key characters, Mariya and Free, but litters the story with too many supporting characters. With so many soldiers, agents, and various political leaders and figureheads, these individuals play a minuscule part and take away any depth that could be established with the main characters. Subplot upon subplot, these subordinate scenarios provide viewers too many paths that lead to nowhere special.

The Demon Lord Kunai meets even more women and they all have the same impression of him at first, but they soon come around and he manages to befriend them somehow. There’s not much going on with this show in terms of story, as it is basically like every other harem/isekai out there. However, this anime does seem to be able to poke fun at itself, making it more enjoyable to watch. Even the animation doesn’t seem to try too hard. Maou-sama, Retry! isn’t anything too amazing to behold, though it does have a few unique elements, like the protagonist being able to switch to different avatars. All in all, this anime has the “it’s so bad, it’s good” kind of vibe, so take that as you will."]

Tejina-senpai is an episodic anime, with plenty of short skits for each episode, though they do tie together into somewhat of a story plot. These first three episodes basically establish why our protagonist is a part of this club, as he tries to support his senpai even in her most embarrassing magical failures. The only thing this anime has going for it is the ecchi comedy, showcasing the amount of ways a magic trick could go horribly wrong. We’re interested to see how the dynamic changes as more characters are introduced. From our early impression, it seems like a pretty fun show!"]

While it’s marketed as a BL series, the story does a great job of making the individual personalities and the relationship of the two leads very relatable and doesn’t “force” the romance for the sake of fan service. By episode 3, we start to learn a little more about Mafuyu and why he’s so introverted. Though the episode shows something happened has happened, it has yet to really tell. However, we still see that Mafuyu is still unique as an individual despite how aloof he comes across and you see how Uenoyama sees the potential inside of him. Within three episodes, it doesn’t really give much, but it does capture your curiosity to see what can happen next as you start to see Mafuyu come out of his shell a bit more, and the hidden potential he has inside of him."]

We’re excited to learn more about some of the newcomers from the Apollo familia, even as other characters like Mikoto and Ryu get more of a spotlight. This season, we have already seen some great character development, as the Hestia familia actually grows in size! Though the first few episodes have been more about the set up for Bell’s trials and the impending War Game, the excitement for this season promises to be at an all-time high! Bell has already faced the deadly onslaught of the Apollo familia, though the War Game will be much more intense. From combat to character interactions, viewers can be sure to look forward to great moments to come. The world of Orario is full of possibility, and though we have already seen plenty of characters’ stories come to light, there is room for so much more! Perhaps this is Danmachi’s greatest achievement, that it manages to show us how vast its world is even while it focuses solely on one heroic boy."]

There are very few franchises that have had the run JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure has. With essentially eight distinct plotlines with eight entirely unique heroes with different personalities, motivations, and backstories, it’s been fascinating to watch how the franchise evolves. The beginning of a new part and the introduction of a new Jojo is as much of an event as if author Hirohiko Araki started up a new manga. With each new protagonist comes a new feel, tone, and set of morals, so let’s take a look at how the heroism of Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure has evolved over the course of the series. For the sake of not spoiling potential future arcs for anime fans, we’re going to stick to the first 5 parts of the franchise. Let’s go!

-Spoilers Ahead-

Jonathan Joestar

The original hero of our tale, Jonathan is about as close to an archetypal Shounen protagonist as you can get. He’s kind, overly trusting to a fault, and will do anything to protect his friends and family. Because of this, Jonathan doesn’t have much of a character arc in Phantom Blood. There’s a simplicity to him that runs counter to that of Dio, who’s very specifically shaped by his circumstances. He never has to learn a lesson about what it is that he stands for: he always just is. That purity is what we admire about him, and what pulls others to his cause.

Joseph Joestar

Unlike his grandfather, Joseph has to actually work towards becoming a hero. It’s not that he’s a bad kid; quite the opposite. He’s always there standing up for kids getting picked on by the police or more than willing to try and make friends with recently born pillar men who may just be confused. The difference is that Joseph’s got a much more cowardly personality than Jonathan, always trying his best to run away or figure a loophole to escape a dangerous situation rather than committing to be the hero. He has to grow into the role, and unfortunately that only happens when his best friend, Caesar Zeppeli, dies tragically to have Joseph’s fight against Wham for him. Heroism is not something that is inherent to Joseph, but learned.

Kujo Jotaro

Even though on paper Jotaro’s background doesn’t sound too much different from grandpa Joseph, in terms of character growth and presentation, the two are worlds apart. Jotaro, in terms of development, is closer to that of Jonathan in that he never has to grow into being a hero. This is in extreme contrast to Joseph, who even though he was a ne’er do well with a heart of gold, still had to learn to do the right thing in the end. In fact, Jotaro’s extreme rudeness actively makes him off-putting to the audience. We’re introduced to him locked up in prison and loudly demeaning his own mother in public. Yet when his mother’s life is threatened, he makes no hesitation to fly out to Egypt with grandpa Joseph to save his mother from a vampire with a grudge against his great-great grandfather. This extreme contrast in regards to his attitude and demeanor vs his actions force us as an audience to reconsider what we should be thinking about the people who have been deemed as outcasts from society.

Higashikata Josuke

Okay, so, even though all of our Jojos have had varying backgrounds, personalities, and attitudes, one aspect that’s consistent through their plot threads is that they’re all men who ultimately take action. Even Joseph, the most cowardly of the three, willingly threw himself into dangerous situations to do the right thing before finding a way out of it when he found himself over his head. Josuke, on the other hand, is introduced to us getting mocked and teased by some local punks. It’s not until they start poking fun at his hairdo that Josuke takes any sort of initiative. Even if he can defend himself, he’s not really the kind of kid who wants to find himself in a scrap. He’d much rather live with his family in peace. Much like his father, Josuke has to learn after his grandfather dies that he has to be more active to protect what he cares about. However, what really differs about Josuke from prior JoJos is his much trimmer design. Jonathan, Joseph, and Jotaro were all designed with that 80’s idealization the Schwartzeneger physique. To try and maintain consistency with the art direction of past parts, Josuke starts out with a similar style before Araki shifted his designed into the slimmer design that we know today. We have to imagine it was jarring at the time, but ultimately it was the right choice for the character. Unlike past parts, Josuke is not a hero someone wants to see themselves as, but one they can relate to. The slimmer look emphasizes his gentleness and kindness as his heroic traits over his toughness.

Giorno Giovanna

Giorno is a walking contradiction. Personality-wise, he’s the closest to Jonathan with his gentlemanly disposition and refusal to sacrifice his ideals. Yet, his father is none other than Dio Brando, the eternal enemy of the Joestar clan. In fact, Giorno’s goal is essentially the same as his father: stealing the fortune and organization of the very person who took him in off the streets and gave him a second chance at life. The plan’s not too different either: putting on a good face to hide his intentions while secretly biding his time. He’ll even kill if he deems someone a great enough threat to his cause or he hates them enough. Just ask Polpo. The difference is in motivation. Dio was purely operating in service to himself and stealing from a decent family that thought of him as one of their own. Giorno, on the other hand, is infiltrating a criminal organization so he can take them over and turn them into a force for… well maybe not “good”, but at least keep them from selling drugs to kids. Here, JoJo completely turns what we think as heroism on its head by showing how it’s not necessarily one’s methods that make one a bad person, but motivation.

Final Thoughts

Rather than just stick with different variations of Jonathan for the rest of the series, Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure reinvents itself with every new story to challenge our perception of it. This way, we don’t get caught up on one single definition of morality. Different situations call for different kinds of heroes.

Oda Nobunaga is a middle school teacher with an obsession for H-games. He fantasizes about being in a harem just like in his games, but unfortunately, his luck with the ladies ends there. Oda's parents are giving him "the talk" on a family night dinner, telling him at his age, he should be finding a wife. Disregarding their speech, Oda and his sister make their way to the garage to do some cleaning when he accidentally knocks over some dinnerware. As Oda reaches over to pick up the pieces, something odd occurs. A young maiden falls out of thin air into his arms. Even more peculiar, is that this girl, Saito Kicho, time traveled over 400 years from the past, declaring that Oda’s ancestor with the same name, has been arranged to marry this young bride. Nobunaga-sensei no Osanazuma presents terms, acts, and expressions targeted for adults. Some may have mixed feelings about the character interactions, as it appeals more to ecchi and loli fans. While there are several sequences of fan service, viewers might be turned off by the taboo sexual and romantic relations.

2. Minimal Character Development

Nobunaga-sensei no Osanazuma has a couple of essentials, such as intriguing characters and story that make it great but it needs to stay consistent and expand on some of the relationships. While some love affairs are more thorough than others, this anime could be better if each romance had equal air time followed by a gradual closure.

Chifuyu’s surgery on her right finger that she injured in the team division went well and she participated in a summer camp at Fujisaki High School with Taichi. Determined to not get discouraged by their advisor Ms. Sakurazawa’s guidance, just when she was focused on working hard and practicing for her master-queen game, she finds out that her participation is at risk. On the other hand, after figuring out that having a team opens up possibilities for karuta, Arata started to move towards creating his own karuta club. With the appearance of new rivals, the coming future, and her dream of becoming a queen… the third season opens with the overflowing passion and dedication of these high school students!

8. Attack Anti-Bacterial EX Super Clear Gel Sponsored by Captain Levi

Captain Levi, the ultra serious supersoldier from Attack on Titan who also happens to be a massive clean freak, was chosen to be the mascot for detergent brand “Attack” for a limited time. Consumers were allowed to vote on Twitter for the design of the bottle, cap, and Levi’s pose on the label. The pose chosen was “Levi undressing you with his eyes while pouring out detergent”, and the slogan was “laundry with no regrets” (a reference to Levi’s prequel side-story, “A Choice with No Regrets”). Who knew cleaning product brands had such a sharp sense of humor?

7. Dragon Ball Hair Styling Wax 7 Super Hard

The Dragon Ball series is known for its gravity-defying hairstyles, so it’s no wonder that it has its own hair styling gel! Bandai collaborated with cosmetics company Creer Beatute to create three different strengths of hair wax, each of which are packaged in little containers shaped like Dragon Balls. They even have carrot essence for moisture, a play on Goku’s birth name Kakarrot. And unlike most items on this list, the wax is easily purchasable for Westerners on Bandai’s website or Amazon. It gets raving reviews!

6. Monster Musume 7m Miia Dakimakura

Miia is a full size lamia girl with an extremely long (and sensitive) tail, so the only dakimakura that could do justice to her size is one that’s 7m (23ft) long. Monster Musume’s booth at Comiket sold these pillow covers for around $800 each when they debuted in 2015, and although you can find them cheaper online nowadays, the question still remains—how are you supposed to stuff the thing? Well, it would require frankensteining around 4-5 standard body pillows together, but those who have the true desire to be engulfed by Miia’s luscious scaly tail will do anything to be closer to their lamia waifu.

5. Sagamiya Foods MS-06 Zaku Tofu

Sagamiya Foods is a company that makes high quality tofu-based desserts, which seems to make them an odd choice for a Gundam collaboration. But somebody there is obviously a huge mecha fan, because their Gundam tie-in molded desserts have been crafted with love and care down to the tiniest detail. Their first offering in 2012 was the MS-06 Zaku Tofu, which was specially made from edamame beans to match the green color of the robot and came with a unique spoon modeled after Zaku’s signature weapon. Since then, they’ve rolled out more tofu desserts based on Z-Gok, Dom, and Big Zam—each with its own accessories and special promotions. It’s heartwarming to see such devotion poured into something as simple as a mass-market tofu snack, but we guess that’s just evidence of the massive impact Gundam has had on Japanese culture!

4. Ahegao Toilet Paper Roll

But when facemasks, shoes, and sweatshirts aren’t enough, rumor has it that certain vendors carry rolls of ahegao toilet paper. Other than displaying it proudly on your merch shelf or using it for scandalous purposes, we can think of a few more ways to have fun with this toilet paper. Why not make yourself into a cheap mummy for your next convention, or prank houseguests by making it the only butt-wiping implement in their bathroom? The possibilities are endless!

3. Yuri!!! on Ice “I’m a Tasty Pork Cutlet Bowl” Watchmen Beanie

“I’m a tasty pork cutlet bowl” is a famously silly line from Yuri on Ice, but it makes enough sense in context—Yuri doesn’t understand how to incorporate passionate love into his skating routine yet, so he decides to interpret it as desire for his favorite food. Most pieces of merchandise that use this quote help fill in the context by putting a picture of skating Yuri beside it or rendering the text in a flowery font... but it seems like Hot Topic missed that memo. This beanie features the iconic quote in a blocky, boring font on a flat teal background with no visible anime branding except for a tiny logo patch on the back. The disinterested model completes the awkward image, leaving us to wonder if the person who designed this hat even watched Yuri on Ice at all.

2. JoJo Series “Star Destroyer” and “Silver Renegade” Vibrators

So... Star Platinum and Silver Chariot. One is a muscle-bound warrior wearing very little clothing, and the other is a sleek robot with a fancy rapier. Sure, they’re spiritual manifestations of Jotaro and Polnareff’s fighting spirits, but it’s not like they aren’t attractive. Does that mean that themed vibrators called the “Star Destroyer” and the “Silver Renegade” need to exist? Honestly, we don’t know. There’s no record of an official JoJo collaboration with an adult toy brand, so it’s entirely possible that these product pages are just Photoshop mockups and nothing more. But when the descriptions include gems like “you can experience Star Platinum in a whole new way” and “by the time you’re done, you’ll be screaming, ‘Silver Chariot!’”, we think it would be a crime not to include them on this list. Ora Ora Ora indeed.

1. EVA x DRESS Fish Grip Grasper EVANGELION-01 Unit 01

Neon Genesis Evangelion is one of the most heavily merchandised anime ever made, and its reach extends far past the usual trappings of t-shirts and figures. You can find chopsticks, soap dishes, dumbbells, bowling pins, humidifiers, dehumidifiers... but our favorite has to be this fish grip modeled after the EVA Unit 01, cleverly marketed with the slogan “You mustn’t run away, even from big fish”. Fishing equipment brand Dress designed this grip, and even combined it with a themed smartphone app to measure anything you catch. Since fish grips are expensive specialized tools used by anglers to safely handle fish after they’re caught, it seems like such a collaboration would have a pretty niche audience. But the sales don’t lie—the first run of EVA Unit 01 fish grips flew off of shelves faster than Shinji can run away from his problems.

Three Episode Impression

[ua_synopsis text="If you’re someone who enjoys gimmicky buddy cop movies that were popular between the 80’s and 90’s, then Cop Craft follows in that tradition, but with a flavor of fairy tales. It’s similar to Gate where Japan serves as a gateway to a world of fantasy, but instead of Japan, that very gate is off the coast of Los Angeles (or San Teresa), and that is where the elves and fairies reside on Earth and live the American dream. Within three episodes, the series moves at a fast pace with the relationship between Kei and Tilarna developing during that period. Granted it comes across as forced, but events and circumstances within the story assist in making it believable. The baddie for the first three episodes is also appropriate for the series and though his presence is short, he does a great job of further expanding the world within Cop Craft. In addition, the first three episodes also do a great job of not only introducing you to the characters, relationships and motivations, but by the end of episode 2, you more or less get a good foundational understanding of what’s going on. Last, thanks to the performance of Kenjiro Tsuda as Kei, his deep and nasal voice effectively captures him as a hard-boiled detective suited for anime."]

Written by Kouhei Kadono (of Boogiepop fame) and peppered with illustrations by Araki, Purple Haze Feedback is a light novel spinoff of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind that stars Pannacotta Fugo. Six months after the conclusion of part 5, Giorno sends Fugo off on a mission to take out the rogue narcotics team and its mysterious leader, Massimo Volpe. Joined by new companions Sheila E and Cannolo Murolo, Fugo sets out to prove his loyalty to Passione and perhaps even forgive himself for deserting Bruno’s team on that fateful day.

Discussion Time

In the original manga, Fugo didn’t get much to do – he only participated in one fight, barely got any backstory, and left the group for good after Bruno decided to betray the boss. The anime filled in a few narrative gaps, but still left him as the least developed member of the gang, so Purple Haze Feedback is considered an important piece of JoJo lore because it significantly expands Fugo’s character. Kadono’s prose is well written for the most part and Araki’s illustrations bring the unique new characters to life with vibrant expressions and poses, so this light novel is worth your time if you’re a serious JoJo fan or just want to see more adventures in the world of flamboyant Italian gangsters.

1. Fleshing Out Fugo

While the manga only implied that Fugo felt guilty for leaving his comrades in Venice, Purple Haze Feedback explores his internal conflict in depth. He knows that he made the logical choice, but he’s haunted by the possibility that he could’ve saved Bucciarati, Abbacchio, and his best friend Narancia if he had embraced his terrifying Stand power and risked his security to fight alongside them. This struggle is what motivates and changes Fugo throughout his journey.

2. A New Author’s Point of View

Kadono’s Boogiepop series is well known for being deeply psychological and mysterious, so it’s no surprise that Purple Haze Feedback tackles more esoteric themes than most canon JoJo material. The impact of lost loved ones on our day-to-day lives, the ambiguity of drugs and assisted suicide as methods to alleviate suffering, accepting the most hated parts of ourselves so we can use them for good... it’s all here, and somehow it all works.

3. Fascinating Stand Battles

The new Stand powers on display in this light novel are incredibly creative and make for some fascinating fights when pitted against each other. One of our favorites is Rainy Day Dream Away, which locks feelings into place the same way that Kraft Work locks objects. Its user disorients Fugo by forcing him to feel like he’s falling forever, which Fugo can only combat by launching himself into the air and dropping down at terminal velocity. We’d love to see these battles animated in an OVA someday!

Why You Should Skip Purple Haze Feedback

1. Out-of-Character Moments

One unfortunate side effect of Purple Haze Feedback being written by a different author is that the existing characters don’t always behave in the way we expect them to. Giorno suffers the most from this, coming off as far too perfect and aloof – we wish he would’ve treated Fugo as more of an equal, seeing as they were both low-ranking gangsters not six months ago.

2. Irrelevant to the Canon Story

As intriguing as this new addition to JoJo lore can be, it’s ultimately irrelevant to the rest of the series. The anime chose to invent its own version of Fugo’s backstory rather than use the one presented here, and it’s honestly pretty doubtful that an OVA would ever be made for a spinoff that Araki didn’t even write himself. While Purple Haze Feedback is a fun read, you won’t miss anything by skipping it.

Final Thoughts

Overall, we recommend this light novel for JoJo fans who are looking for something to scratch their fandom itch while waiting for a new anime episode or Jojolion chapter. It’s an unusual romp filled with introspective psychological drama and action-packed battles for our favorite angry Swiss cheese boy, and if that’s what you’re looking for, Purple Haze Feedback won’t disappoint. What we’ll be checking out is the new mini Samurai Shodown Limited Edition arcade mini which is to celebrate the release of the new Samurai Shodown title that was recently launched. The NEOGEO mini Samurai Shodown Limited Edition will have three translucent variations: Haohmaru (White), Nakoruru (Red)—this is the one we have—, and Ukyo Tachibana (Blue). Each color for the arcade mini is limited to 20,000 units and they went on sale July 24, 2019.

On the Outside

The Outside of the box is a wonderful yet simple design that will feature one of the 3 characters paired with each color. As aforementioned, Nakoruru was our character for the red version of the NEOGEO mini. You can appreciate the wonderful character print on the box so like we said, make sure you get the one you really want! There is a clear display so you can clearly and visibly see the 2 controllers and the mini arcade itself. The cables are neatly tucked away out of sight but know they are there.

On the Inside

When you purchase the NEOGEO mini Samurai Shodown, it will include two controllers, one HDMI cable, one USB to USB-C power cable, one anti-slip cushion—which honestly, looks like an old-school silicon sticker you’d place on your window from back in the day, but that in no way indicates our age...—, one collectable character card, and character stickers.

The Experience

The NEOGEO mini is based on the design of the arcade cabinet which has a 3.5-inch display screen built right into it. The mini arcade fits in the palm of your hand so you can enjoy some of the titles that don’t require you to use both hands. The NEOGEO mini also has several connections for enjoyment, as there are 3 ways you can play this mini arcade system. First, you can play as is with the built-in joystick and button layout on the mini arcade using the 3.5-inch display. You can also simply plug in one of the two controllers that come with the set and still use the 3.5-inch display screen, or you can use the HDMI port to connect the mini arcade to your TV for the ultimate experience! The NEOGEO mini also has a built-in speaker for gameplay sound and it also includes an AUX headphone jack for more immersion. The next cool feature is that with the character stickers it comes with, you can dress up your arcade mini to have a special image banner just above the display screen like the full-scale arcades! Each color version of the NEOGEO mini has exclusive banners you can use so make sure you get the one you want! Another really cool feature is that the NEOGEO mini has a save function in which you can save your progress as you play by pressing the Start and Settings buttons at the same time during the game through the Settings screen. There are four slots to save so save what you care about the most!

Honey’s Final Verdict

The NEOGEO mini is everything we hoped for and then some. The save function is definitely a huge plus as saving your progress is pretty important. We love that not only can you play via the arcade mini itself, but you can also link it to your TV via HDMI for the ultimate retro gaming experience. The UI for the NEOGEO is friendly and you will get to enjoy many of the games included in their original Japanese dialogue. The gameplay for the games, whichever one you decide to dive into first, shows the beautiful retro designs that we all grew up to love and remember. Well, now we can relive it and the first game we went into was Metal Slug! It felt like you were back at the old arcade playing it for the first time, again. Connections are easy to manage and the mini arcade does have a power On and Off switch button that you press down and it has a lovely NEOGEO mini logo right on it. The power supply is USB-C to USB so you can plug it into anything with a USB port for power. It doesn’t take up much energy so you can game for a few hours if you wanted. This means the NEOGEO mini is mobile and you can play anywhere, basically. With its beautiful design, we know retro gamers and purists alike, will definitely want to get one of these!
