A Stand-Alone Slice-of-Life is a story where the people and events don’t change or evolve and more often than not the situation is no different at the end of the series than the beginning. The overwhelming majority of these are comedies filled with senseless humor and populated with exaggerating stereotypes.

The anime can be made of multiple short stories in each episode that show some random event in the lives of the main characters. When you add enough of these up you get an abstract plot, whether it’s a character finding the will to confess or keeping their beloved club from being abolished, providing the structure for the story.

Rito is in love with Haruna and has been for years. He is now 16 and ready to find the courage to confess his feelings. Somewhat less talked about are the real grades (RG), which are roughly as easy to put together as HG but with nuances and details more on par with MG and the Reborn-One Hundred (RE) grade, which is like HG but with larger parts that culminate in the scale mentioned in the name once completed.

Once you’ve grabbed the model kit you want in the scale and grade you feel is most appropriate for you, it’s time to take your pieces out. They won’t be loose in the box, though; all the pieces are attached to sprues. Sexist responses to women playing Smash have existed for years and have previously alienated numerous talented community members like Milktea and VikkiKitty. In fact, over 5 years ago pro-Melee player Neha Chhetri assembled comprehensive data on the sexism and harassment women among us have faced, which included photographic proof. If you’ve heard little about these stories, it’s likely to be for the reason that despite how well documented these problems have been, they’ve been allowed to keep happening. The community has repeatedly ignored and forgotten the stories of women who went through the same thing as Bocchi, to the point where some organizers’ proposed plans to implement a code of conduct against such things at their events have been met with outcry and antagonism, more than the players bullying Bocchi ever received. Some even went as far as to make threats of litigation because their behavior being monitored at private events was apparently worse than harassing a high-schooler. The good news is that things do seem to be getting better for now. Bocchi has arguably received more public support than any of the previous victims—including help from Smash 4 G.O.A.T. ZeRo—which is hopefully the start of a trend towards better treatment of women in the community. But having seen how others in the same boat have been treated before leads me to worry that people will forget all about the young prodigy and that her ordeal will happen all over again to someone else. It’s great seeing more and more people stand up for Bocchi and I would love to be proven wrong, but I still worry history will repeat itself.

Smash Bros. YouTuber and Twitch streamer Desmond “Etika” Amofah was found dead in Manhattan on June 19th, 2019 after having committed suicide by drowning. His death came after months of his mental health visibly deteriorating on his streams, drawing concern from friends and fans alike. But at the same time, others treated his downward spiral as a joke, making memes and joking about his decline, not recognizing the signs of his illness and believing them to be an act. He was encouraged by a contingent of viewers to continue a pattern of self-destructive behavior, leading to several public breakdowns as his situation worsened, culminating in his suicide. I’m not going to talk as much about this, partially because there’s too much to go over and partially because the issues that lead to this permeate all throughout the internet and are not limited to Smash Bros. but, with that said, what transpired shows a poor understanding of mental health within the community. I’m not blaming anyone in the scene for Etika’s death and I would argue that outside internet personalities like Keemstar had a far more negative influence on him, but I’d be lying if I told you that there wasn’t a noticeable trend of other players encouraging Etika’s antics, whether it was through attacks at him and his condition or because they thought enabling his meltdowns was all in good fun. There are countless people inside and outside the Smash community who have the same struggles as Etika, and my only hope is that we can recognize their pain from now on and help them get the assistance they need.

If you were wondering earlier why Ally didn’t use his influence to help Bocchi, it was because he was going through his own issues, having been accused by fellow top-player tamim of having engaged in a relationship with fellow top-player CaptainZack, aged 16. Ally was 26 at the time and denied every part of the accusation for months until mounting evidence and a corroborating testimonial from Zack made it clear his façade couldn’t be maintained. Ally admitted tamim had been telling the truth on Independence Day and promptly announced his retirement, leaving Smash Bros. behind. I don’t have a problem with the scene having had a predator in it, especially since he’s gone now and major tournament organizers have had the decency to issue lifetime bans against him anyway. My problem is how I’ve seen other players react to it. Remember all the vitriol that Bocchi received for beating Ally in a tournament? Well, Ally received only a minor fraction of outrage by comparison, despite having done something illegal. Ally actually gained quite the outpouring of support, as stans flooded to his twitter to beg him not to leave while lashing out at those calling him out. Some have gone as far as to attack tamim for having outed Ally, even after all parties involved confirmed he was correct. All this less than a month after the same community flamed a 15-year-old girl for beating the aforementioned predator in a videogame. And to be honest, I don’t fully blame sexism for this double-standard. It would certainly be hard to deny that that was a factor, but I believe another motivator behind the wave of defense for Ally was top-player privilege. It’s no secret that high-level smashers have been given more leeway than pros in any other part of the FGC. We entirely exempt stars from certain rules, allowing them to show up over 30 minutes late with little to no penalty, skipping the first round of group stages and more. And while none of that is even remotely as bad as defending people like Ally, I believe it all comes from holding these individuals too far above the rest. Top-level Smash players are so deified that they will be defended from accusations of crimes they admit to doing, while newcomers struggle to be recognized for their accomplishments without being harassed based on their gender.

Beyond predicting that the 2020 Olympics will be hosted in Tokyo, one theme from both the original anime movie and manga that still resonates to this day is the notion of Japan officially militarizing by abolishing Article 9 of its constitution. If you don’t know what Article 9 is, it’s what makes the Japanese denounce war, and it makes it illegal for Japan to form an actual military (the existence of the JSDF can be saved for a different article). Of course, this was implemented by the Americans, and the original manga also subliminally explores that relationship as it pertains to American military presence. In the original manga and movie, you see how Japan having a military has made the country a police state like in World War II. With the long ruling Liberal Democratic Party (despite the name, it’s a right leaning party) under present Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, they’re seeking to abolish Article 9 due to rising tensions with China and the Korean Peninsula.

This also comes from another quality that was more emphasized in the manga, as it also critiqued Japan’s youth culture during the 1980’s with the rise of “bousouzoku,” or “motorcycle gangs.” With the declining birth rate, teenage motorcycle gangs feel non-existent in modern Japan compared to Japan over 30 years ago. However, it goes back to how the youth in Japan tend to be alienated between then and now has changed. Granted many nations have such problems, but Japan’s circumstances are rather distinct. In the 1988 film and manga, it explores youth alienation through both the children that were used as experiments, and with Kaneda and his gang to represent their respective generations’ definition of alienation. With the psychic children, they represent the victims of nuclear weapons, and Japan’s infamous experiments. While Japan mourned for the victims, at the same time, they were also being discriminated against. Government induced isolation is an obvious nod to this. For Kaneda and his friends, they represent a new generation in Japan that was raised during its economic rise and probably were the first to grow up in a modern urban environment. Due to the conditions set by these economic changes by making parents non-existent in their children’s lives, they found their “families” through gangs. In 2019, the issue has transitioned to the phenomenon of NEETs and shut-ins, or “hikikomori.” Today’s youth of Japan more or less grew up in its “lost decades,” or post-economic bubble. With the rise of its senior dominated population and declining birth rate, their future prospects are in jeopardy as taxes are going to get higher to care for these seniors and to cover costs as its population declines.

Since Hollywood is too obsessed with remakes this past decade (some have been awful, but we’ll admit that there have also been some good ones), we can’t help but assume that they should know that an American version to Akira already exists, and that’s Chronicle starring Dane HeHaan, which we’ll admit is a good movie as it tells its own unique story. Also, there’s another American version through the music video of Kanye West’s cover to Daft Punk’s Stronger (yes, Kanye is an Akira fan).

If one key aspect differentiates the marketing of anime between Japan and other nations, it’s of course the emphasis of merchandising. Japan has many unique exclusives with its toys, pillows, mouse pads, books, and just about everything you can think of (and you also didn’t think of). So, why is merchandising such a big deal in Japan? We’ve partially shared this in an old Editorial Tuesday as to whether or not anime is truly expensive, but we’re willing to provide a brief refresher. It simply comes down to how TV shows are pitched and funded in Japan, in comparison to let's say USA (we can’t speak for any other country beyond that). In the American industry, a studio pitches a show to a network through a pilot. If the network approves it, then the network also provides funding. In the Japanese TV industry, it doesn’t work that way. The studio pays the network to air their show and the studio not only has to pay the network, they also have to pay the production costs on top of that. It entirely explains why DVD/Blu-ray costs are sky high in Japan! However, that’s still a different topic. So to cover those costs beyond DVD/Blu-ray, they focus on their merchandise department to make profits. Because the merchandising is more niche outside of Japan, they don’t entirely require to sell overseas to make a profit. Of course, using animation to sell merchandise is by no means a unique phenomenon. In the US, the He-Man, Transformers, and GI Joe animated series served as glorified commercials for its respective products. But in the US, it’s about the toy companies making a profit, but in Japan, it’s about studios making a profit due to their own respective market conditions and circumstances. Internationally, you can just easily sell it on its own artistic merits of being different from one’s local animated products.

A lot of anime is taken from manga and/or visual novels. What has been a recent controversy is how the opening theme songs of Attack on Titan tend to portray spoilers from the manga. To a Japanese viewer (who has likely read the manga), this is no big deal and they like the notion of seeing their favorite scenes animated. But to a non-Japanese viewer who has more than likely not read the manga, it can be confusing and frustrating. It goes down to how most anime based on manga and visual novels, when allowed, tend to be faithful to the original source material, and the studios likely assume that their native viewers are already familiar with the story. Consequently, a non-Japanese viewer is considered secondary, which is why their feelings of being spoiled aren’t taken into consideration. With adaptations of American comic heroes such as Spider-Man and Batman, despite taking inspiration from its original materials, they’re by no means a panel by panel adaptation of them. Marvel and DC make their adaptations for comic and non-comic audiences alike, while anime studios tend to make their series for those that were likely familiar with the source materials. However, we can reasonably expect that if an anime is cut off short, it could encourage the viewer to check out the manga or visual novel to see what happens next, while a viewer of a comic book adaptation may or may not likely become a comic book reader.

As we stated before, Blu-ray/DVD prices in Japan are expensive due to production costs, but it also relates to outdated businesses practices dating back to when VHS first started, but never went out of fashion in Japan. When VHS made its debut, the prices in America were pretty much $100+ and back then, the movie industry never expected it to become a collector’s market, which paved the way for video rentals (remember those?). While they’ve gone the way of the dodo in the US, they’re still pretty big in Japan. Those Japanese prices are truly meant for rental stores to purchase as it was in the US back in the day, and thanks to that, studios can still make a profit through rentals. Plus, you also have to take into account that Japanese homes aren’t as spacious as American ones to allow someone to collect DVDs. While streaming in the US has been a thing for the past decade, services such as Netflix have just started to catch on in Japan. Due to the commuting society of Tokyo and other Japanese big cities with its reliable public transportation, streaming can effectively be implemented to complement Japan’s rise of mobile gaming.
