I love this series! I love the fact that it’s about friendship and loneliness rather than an action series. The characters really appeal to me. They’re all interesting, and it was an honor to write music for them. Each of the songs had a very specific subject. One was about finding friendship in the midst of despair. Another was about longing for a place to belong. I also received detailed information about each singer, so in the end, I had a very clear idea of what to write about. The themes were definitely in the realm of what I know and love.

Discussion Time

Yakusoku no Neverland chapter 144 wasn’t what we had hoped for this week, but equally, it provided us some interesting new plot developments. Don and Gilda have come to realize that Norman—their trusted friend—has lied to them and it's more apparent with a group of assassins now aiming for Mujika and Sonju. Luckily—or unfortunately—these strong armed experimented suffer mid attack from a weird bout of seizures. Despite being attacked, Mujika goes to their aid showing that indeed, these demons aren’t evil. Gilda begs her demon friends to help them further as she knows Norman is not doing the right thing. Meanwhile—back at the house—Ray and Emma discuss their next plan after they all celebrate Emma’s wish coming true. Emma does shy away from the sacrifice she had to make—which intrigues us—but the duo realizes their mission isn’t over. They need to head to the Imperial Capital before Norman’s plan gets fulfilled. What did Emma need to sacrifice? We need to know!!! Sigh, well besides that painful feeling of not knowing we did enjoy chapter 144 of Yakusoku no Neverland and let’s talk about some of the reasons you want to read this new entry!

1. Demon Love

If Yakusoku no Neverland has taught us anything, it's that not all demons—at least in this universe—are bad. Despite being almost killed by a trap, Sonju and Mujika both decide to help these attackers and then want to help Gilda. Maybe if these demons have hearts, our kids might be able to convince those in the Imperial Capital to not try to use them as food…that’s a big maybe though.

2. Our Next Big Move Commences

Yakusoku no Neverland chapter 144 ends with a pretty big event, the kids are heading to the Imperial Capital! What new battle awaits them in this city filled with overly smart demons and those who are truly sinister? Chapter 145 should be pretty exciting and we can’t wait to see what big move will happen next.

Final Thoughts

Yakusoku no Neverland chapter 144 seemed to want to get to the next big chapter of this series as fast as possible, but it was still an enjoyable chapter overall. What will happen next in Yakusoku no Neverland as we draw near a possible climax? We have honestly no idea, but maybe some of you reading out there do. Alright, so I’ve been quite mixed with Isekai Cheat Magician as there are times it feels formulaic and other times kind of boring. Episode 4 though ramped things up with our first “real” battle which tested our warriors in a proper way. Plus, this fight was pretty bloody! Taichi was tasked with fighting our “farmer” (Cassim) who reveals he actually is a mage with a powerful elemental summon. Rin and Myura partnered up to battle Grammy and this new threat showed she loves any challenge. The two girls had a better time battling our strange magical assassin but Taichi struggled with his opponent as we learn the elemental being was invincible to physical attacks and left Taichi’s physical focused magic useless. Luckily, Taichi near death gained a new power in the form of the voice we’ve been hearing since episode one. While Grammy and Cassim escaped both were left damaged beyond words (CASSIM LOST AN ARM!) which means they will be back. Overall though, Isekai Cheat Magician surprised me by being pretty dang impressive this week and I’m going to keep watching now in hopes this series only goes up from here.

The War Game!

Bell and his friends set out for their impossible task in this War Game - to effectively storm the castle and take out Hyakinthos, the captain of the Apollo familia. Though they have three days allowed to complete this task, the Hestia familia surprises everyone by starting their assault as soon as the time begins. Thanks to the combined efforts of all his friends, Bell is able to reach the top of the tower in no time, and by remembering the training he was given from Ais just days before, he manages to overthrow the Hyakinthos and win the game! This was the build-up we’ve all been waiting for, with everyone giving their all to help Bell! We got to see Ryu, Mikoto and Welf in their element, with Lili providing a complete surprise as she disguised herself and caused confusion behind enemy lines. Despite all the odds being stacked against him, Bell defeated the Apollo familia in such a short time! After all Hestia’s group has been put through already this season, it was nice to see them have such a solid victory. And their new mansion is a nice bonus, though it seems a little big for the notoriously small familia, even with their new members. I was definitely surprised that the fight was over so quickly, but if the rest of this season is as epic as that battle sequence was, I can’t wait to see what comes next for Bell and his friends!

The Shiny Monkey Conquers the Stone World!

Tsukasa killed Senku! ...Well, sort of. He broke Senku’s neck and left him for dead in the last episode, but this time Taiju and Yuzuriha cleverly deceive the “strongest primate high schooler” with a gunpowder blast and escape with their friend’s body. While Taiju tries to revive Senku, we’re treated to a flashback of our intrepid scientist’s first days in the new world. True to the survival/crafting theme of the series, Senku starts his journey through the stone world as a naked, powerless plebeian who has to rely on his ingenuity and improvisational skills just to stay alive. And while it’s definitely entertaining to see the normally unflappable Senku fail spectacularly at making a friction fire and chasing after a deer, it’s even better when he figures out how to make tools and traps from his surroundings to accomplish these tasks without brute strength. The nearby animals’ commentary about the “weird shiny monkey”, as well as the hilarious RPG-style text boxes that mark Senku’s milestones, tie the whole flashback together as a silly, yet triumphant start to the Kingdom of Science. From this bare bones beginning, Senku is certain that he’ll build a society that can one day reach outer space! He’ll just have to come back from the “dead” first...

The girls all find themselves facing different challenges as they take their first foray into romance. While Kazusa, Hongou, Momoko, and Sugawara all come across some drama in their love lives, things are looking up for Sonezaki. After receiving Amagi's report on why he wanted to date her, Sonezaki took it and made some corrections, while also agreeing to go out with him. Overjoyed with the response, Amagi shouts with joy from the roof of the school and Sonezaki runs off blushing. This was by far the best episode of Araburu Kisetsu no Otome-domo yo. so far. We got to see all of the girls go through something serious in this episode. There was Kazusa's jealousy, Sugawara's strange past and her budding feelings for Izumi, Momoko's first date, and Hongou's exhibitionism. With all of that going on the episode ends in the best way possible with the wholesome romance between Sonezaki and Amagi. Although their relationship is fairly plain when compared to the others, it is still nice to have these moments to give us a break from all of the drama going on with the other girls. Hopefully, as we move forward, we get to see a nice balance between all of these different types of romances.

Samurai 8: Hachimaru Den…have you finally found your true beginning? Chapter 12 pulled off some impressive storytelling this week, which actually pulled out our heartstrings a bit! Hachimaru’s father took a lot of damage when he tried to use that machine to destroy Ata, but Ata, being the powerhouse that he is, still is kicking. Daruma realizes that he needs to enter a rest mode to get enough strength back to battle Ata leaving a depressed Hachimaru alone. Chapter 12 does some nice flashback sequences showing our young samurai as a child and relying on his father for everything while showing a true love for his dad we haven’t really seen yet in Samurai 8: Hachimaru Den. With renewed strength and courage, Hachimaru activates his still weak sword and goes against Ata! While Ata still trumps over Hachimaru even with only half his body in tact, Hachimaru realizes that he isn’t afraid and the two-clash ending the chapter. Samurai 8: Hachimaru Den chapter 12 once more brings us back to a place where we have hope in this series, but if chapter 13 dashes that hope away…we just hope not. Only positives to speak about this week’s Samurai 8: Hachimaru Den chapter!

1. Those Full Color Panels!

Chapter 12 starts off on a strong note by featuring several full colored pages, which made us smile as we saw some beautiful art get enhanced. While we know it would be impossible—and extremely expensive—to color the whole Samurai 8: Hachimaru Den series, those first few pages showed us this series has something to prove.

2. Hachimaru Isn’t Crying!

Samurai 8: Hachimaru Den’s main protagonist has been a whirlwind of things for us. Sometimes Hachimaru can be tough and other times he’s almost the clone of Naruto, over the top and mischievous. Chapter 12’s Hachimaru though was something we haven’t seen yet, brave and strong. Despite the pain his father is going through, Hachimaru stands on his own, apologizes for lying to Ann and goes against Ata without a doubt in his heart. This is the hero/samurai we want and if Hachimaru continues to be this cool…this series will be something else entirely!

Final Thoughts

Hachimaru has his hands full with Ata near the end of chapter 12, but we’re excited to see what our freshly made samurai can do in chapter 13. What amazes us more is the fact that Samurai 8: Hachimaru Den truly was enjoyable this week when last week we kind of sighed at how the whole set up went down. Is this the rebirth of Samurai 8: Hachimaru Den and will the series only go up from here? Yumiko Miura does not have the generous nature that is common among other Sagittarii. As the most popular girl in class, Yumiko has little problem with creating new relationships and is sought after by many of the males. Her ability to have pretty much no filter makes her brutally honest and a little scary to others. This combination of traits allows her a spot on our list but she falls to the bottom because of her lack of genuine generosity and humor that is seen in other Sagittarii.

This child prodigy is full of book smarts. Her proud nature allows her to flaunt her position as a pilot and issue insults to many of those around her. In order to have a relationship with her, she only deems those that are self-proficient worthy of her time. Asuka puts up a hard exterior to hide her gentler and insecure emotions that occasionally float to the surface and present themselves as irritability. As a strong lead female character, she is an inspiration to us all but falls to the bottom of our list for lacking the main Sagittarius qualities.

Despite being a famous popstar, Mei’s attitude remains more cold and cynical than ever. She does not hold any of the positive traits of the Sagittarius at first glance. However, once she warms up a bit she becomes more generous. She is extremely impatient and is not afraid to hurt others feelings with her sharp words. Mei is a difficult person to get along with and is not worried about having no one around her. She ruins her relationships easily by pushing those close to her away. This makes her fall low on our list because of her lack of positive Sagittarius qualities.

Lita Kino, more commonly known as her alias Sailor Jupiter, is exceptionally powerful in her own right. Her martial arts skills are off the charts and with her added power of lightning, she is an invaluable member of Sailor Moon’s team. Lita is one of the more practical members of the team, she does not hold the idealist manner that other Sagittarii possess but prefers to remain rooted in reality. She often becomes impatient with the other Sailors because of their inability to grasp how dire the situations they are in truly are. This makes her fall to the bottom of our list despite her strength of character.

Megumin is easily irritated because she is often treated like a child. Her lively personality attracts others to her and her cheerful demeanor often gets others in her party to keep going with their mission. While Megumin is extremely powerful, she focuses her strength on explosive magic so she can only use it once before succumbing to exhaustion. Megumin can be seen as both an asset and a hindrance to her party because of her magic as she must be carried after each time she uses it. Her idealistic nature makes her an ideal Sagittarius and puts her higher up on our list.

Centorea is a very strong character. Her mind is often focused on battle and battle tactics as her centaur background encourages a chivalrous nature. She is also resolutely loyal to Kimihito after she declare him her master. Despite competition among the other girls, she does have a sort of motherly heir about her that allows her to help out the others when needed. While Centorea is generous towards Kimihito, she is very impatient with him along with others in the house which puts her at a spot on our list.

3. Yoshino Koiwai from Masamune-kun no Revenge (Masamune-kun’s Revenge)

Yoshino’s generosity towards Aki Adagaki is apparent from her first scene. She is always bringing her food and doing tasks that may seem demeaning. She generally hides her emotions and is grateful when around Aki, however around others she is brutally honest and seeks no approval from others. Yoshino is exceptionally patient with Aki but is easily frustrated when she focuses her attention on others. These traits are the true mark of a Sagittarius depending on who she is with. Her company can bring out either the positive or the negative side of her Sagittarius nature.

Sakura is an ideal Sagittarius because of her idealistic view of the world. She becomes blinded to things she doesn’t want to see and uses her strong willpower to achieve her goals despite how unattainable they might be. She is generous to her friends and is always willing to help out unless it interferes with her own goals. This is an example of her selfish nature and is made apparent when she pines for Yun despite his constant efforts to get away from her. Her patient nature is unlike that of a common Sagittarius however, the rest of her character is built up of the Sagittarius personality traits and earns her a top spot on our list.

While Ayame Kajou is displayed as an uptight student council vice president during the day, at night she has a secret alter ego that loves dirty jokes and strives for a more perverse community. Her status as the famed “The Blue in the Snow Field” is perpetuated as she strives to spread acts of terrorism throughout the community. She sees a more perverse world as a better world and is willing to do and say whatever it takes in her alter ego form to achieve her goals. This makes her an ideal Sagittarius and earns her the top spot on our list of females.

Discussion Time

Samurai 8: Hachimaru Den…why do you do this? Ata—the fearsome samurai from space—finally appears and we were excited for a grand battle. Daruma clearly wasn’t capable of fighting as he took damage last chapter, but our hope rested with Hachimaru maybe taking the mantle and fighting—or at least trying—for an epic duel. Instead, Hachimaru’s father shows that the two do indeed know one another and then uses a powerful special attack that eliminates most of Ata while possibly hurting him in the process. Chapter 11 of Samurai 8: Hachimaru Den does give us another name for Hachimaru—Hachikaku—and tells us samurai apparently die when they become samurai, but in the end, does any of that matter? We hate to say it, folks, but chapter 11 of Samurai 8: Hachimaru Den took what we had hoped would save the series a bit and threw it right out. Not much of interest happened this week though please expect us to talk more negative about chapter 11 then positive. This chapter was hyped in our minds and yet the end result was not even close to be enjoyable.

1. Hachikaku and Hachimaru?

Chapter 11 gives us an interesting revelation about our once weak young man Hachimaru. Ata apparently knows the newly minted samurai by another name and even calls him a mutt. Is it possible Hachimaru isn’t the son of his current father—which we called—and there’s more to him than meets the eye? We hope this revelation comes soon as it might be the only thing we’re enjoying about Samurai 8: Hachimaru Den so far.

1. Ata Defeated…ALREADY?!?!

Chapter 11 of Samurai 8: Hachimaru Den ends with Hachimaru’s dad using his special technique to apparently eliminate a samurai soul. This soul sucking move seems to come at a heavy cost for both the target and user but also in the process, it hurts us the readers. Is Ata already done for before even truly showing off his abilities? We expected way more of a battle between him and the other samurai,what we got was disappointing to say the least.

2. No Epic Battle

The biggest flaw and reason to skip chapter 11 of Samurai 8: Hachimaru Den is easily the lack of a giant battle. We’ve witnessed Ata destroy planets with ease and even beat legendary warriors like nothing. Then he meets Hachimaru’s dad who conveniently has a soul sucking power and Ata is left almost entirely destroyed. Where was our hoped giant battle!? Why did the end result of this chapter seem almost too simple? Maybe we’ll be wowed by chapter 12, but chapter 11 sure didn’t.

Final Thoughts

Chapter 10’s review Samurai 8: Hachimaru Den had us looking at this series with a new glimmer of hope. Chapter 11 took that glimmer and reminded us why we don’t really love this series. Yes, the art is still quite impressive and we have some themes we enjoy, but as a whole, Hachimaru Den just isn’t living up to any good expectations.
