When we hear molecular gastronomy in relation to Shokugeki no Souma, there is one name that trumps the rest… Alice Nakiri. She has an almost encyclopedic knowledge of all things in the realm of molecular gastronomy and understands everything from the gadgets and machines that are used to the interaction of the chemical compounds. This knowledge shows a deep understanding of chemistry as well as cooking to be a truly accomplished chef in the realm of scientific cooking that is molecular gastronomy. But what is molecular gastronomy anyways? This article will explore more into this interesting way of cooking and give you a deeper appreciation for the skills that Alice and her family possess.

Molecular Gastronomy… What is it?

Molecular gastronomy is a form of cooking that incorporates the chemistry of its components into the dish’s evolution. This allows for a far more innovative and creative dish than would have otherwise been introduced. By altering the texture and form of food, one can create an entirely new dish that is surprising. Equipment such as centrifuges and sous vide are commonly used in cooking using molecular gastronomy. Tools are borrowed from science labs to create a new way to incorporate physics and chemistry into the cooking by using techniques such as spherification as well as countless others. By using compounds such as sodium alginate, a chef can influence the way that the ingredients will blend together to create something entirely unique. This type of cooking requires complex knowledge of both cooking and science but can create a new dish with completely new possibilities.

Molecular Gastronomy in Shokugeki no Souma (Food Wars! Shokugeki no Soma)

Alice Nakiri shows us a wide variety of dishes using molecular gastronomy. The most varied dish that she creates is likely the bento box that she makes during the competition of season 2. This is a perfect showcase of her talents and of how she can influence her ingredients to take on an entirely new shape and texture. We also see her explain concepts that are difficult to understand in a more simplified way to help the viewer relate the chemical concepts they see into an easier concept. Souma adapts these concepts to his own cooking to become a better chef later in both season 2 and 3. Other characters have used techniques of molecular gastronomy in their own cooking but Alice Nakiri is for all intents and purposes the queen of molecular gastronomy.

Molecular gastronomy introduces a variety of new concepts for viewers to explore in their own cooking. This is not something that many people study in their everyday lives but can influence cooking in an entirely new and interesting way. Alice Nakiri is a great introductory character when discussing molecular gastronomy. She explains complicated concepts in easy to understand explanations. Her unique take on cooking is an inspiration to everyone who watches her and motivates even the worst cook to be better in the kitchen. What is Poele as Seen in Shokugeki no Souma (Food Wars! Shokugeki no Souma)?

[ad_top1 class="mb40"]

There are a great many techniques that are explored in Shokugeki no Souma as well as countless cuisines. While they all are important in their own right, there is one that stands out among the others and we see as a recurring technique throughout the anime. Poele is a French technique that seems relatively simple but has a long history. Souma uses this method in many scenes and it is a defining moment during his time at Polar Star Dormitory. One could even go so far to say that it brought him and his roommates closer together. The method of poele is arguably one of the most important that we see in Shokugeki no Souma and is a key ingredient to Souma’s success and journey.

What is Poele?

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="crunchyroll" url="https://www.crunchyroll.com/food-wars-shokugeki-no-soma/episode-5-the-ice-queen-and-the-spring-storm-678169" ]

The poele cooking method is one that was developed in France and is used to keep a protein moist by covering it slightly in liquid. This allows for the outside of the protein to become crispy while keeping the inside nice and juicy. Generally, butter is used in this method of cooking to create a very flavorful dish and combined with a variety of vegetables, it comes out simply divine. This is more commonly done with meat, particularly chicken and is only done with ingredients where the skin is left on. In France, the word “poele” translates to frying pan, though it originated from a small dish that had a lip for pouring the liquid known as a poulen.

Poele in Shokugeki no Souma (Food Wars! Shokugeki no Soma)

The poele method is first introduced when Souma Yukihira decides to battle Satoshi Isshiki, the Elite Ten’s seventh seat. Initially Isshiki is surprised and congratulates Souma on his French cooking techniques and innovation by incorporating the technique on fish rather than a meat protein. We see this technique in a variety of scenes that follow including Souma’s apprenticeship with his senior Kojirou Shinomiya. The advanced and obscure cooking techniques that we encounter in Shokugeki no Souma are definitely not limited, but the explanation and impact that we see are especially important when using the poele cooking method.

Poele is a technique that can be used in a variety of ways with a numerous amount of proteins. This makes for an easy meal at home that is both tasty and filling. Souma finds this out from a young age from his father and incorporates it in his cooking throughout the anime. Often used in pot roast cooking, this can be an easy meal for even the most elementary of chefs. Souma and other chefs seen in Shokugeki no Souma use a variety of methods that can be introduced in our own cooking to make us better chefs and inspire us to become the best that we can be. We hope that you have enjoyed reading our article on the French method of poele. As always, if you have any questions or comments please feel free to leave them in the comments section below.

Then vs Now: BEM

[ad_top1 class="mb40"]
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="AVCA-26010" text="" url="" ]

What makes the 2019 Bem distinguishing compared to most of our other articles of Then Vs. Now is that it happens to be the second remake of the original 1968 series. The first remake aired in 2006, and to commemorate its 50th anniversary, we’re going to compare all three versions of Bem.

Similar Stories/Different Executions

What all three series share is that the main trio consists of the titular Bem and his two companions, Belo and Bela. They’re youkai ningen, or humanoid monsters, who wish to become full fledged humans, which is consistent in all three versions. While they’re all fundamentally youkai, they can assume a human-like form. Even when they’re disguised as humans, they still possess amazing abilities such as super strength, speed, agility, and regenerative abilities, but they’re all expressed differently. In the 2019 version, our heroes are impervious to most forms of pain, especially firearm bullets. In the original 1968 version, they can temporarily hurt by bullets. In the 1968 version, they tend to have abilities that traditional ghosts would have. In that edition, they can make themselves invisible, and phase through solid objects. In the 2006 and 2019 versions, these abilities are non-existent. As for how their stories flow, they’re all significantly different. As portrayed in the 2019 series, the main trio fights the forces of evil in the ghettos of Libra City (which largely resembles New York City), or the Outside, but in the 1968 series, they travel around from town to town (which we can assume to be isn’t Japan since they meet characters that don’t have Japanese names) like in the 1960’s American drama, The Fugitive, and fight either a ghost or a really bad human. The 2006 series also takes place in one city, but takes place in a city that is multicultural since it features characters with Japanese names such as Kira Hinata and Kaito Sora, who become Belo’s key allies. Like in the 2019 series, the 2006 series has our heroes fighting other youkai. As shared before, the 1968 version has our trio fighting all kinds of baddies. In one episode, they can be fighting a gang of criminals, and they can be helping a town get rid of a youkai in the next. In the 2006 series, the trio largely fights ghosts and demons that are supernatural in nature, but for the 2019 version, as opposed to fighting beings that are supernatural in nature, the youkai they do battle with are sci-fi in nature.

Belo and Bela’s Portrayal Portrayal

The biggest difference between the original and the modern series is how Belo, the boy youkai, is portrayed. In the 1968 and 2006 versions, he’s very playful and actively wants to make friends with other children. He’s very talkative and acts like just about any regular kid. In the 2019 version, he does hang out with other kids, but even in their presence, he has a stoic and quiet personality, and doesn’t really care too much about making friends but if they invite him to hang out with them, he’ll just go along out of curiosity. While he tends to get his ass kicked in fights in the 1968 series (even against regular humans!), he’s capable of holding his own in the 2019 version. Another notable change is Bela. In the 2019 version, she passes herself off as a high school student but in the 1968 and 2006 versions, she assumes an adult form and has a maternal relationship with Belo. The 1968 and 2006 versions also have her come across as a bit of a sadist as she enjoys terrifying her enemies while this particular quality is taken out in the 2019 version to make her more believable as a teenager. As for Bem, his role is more or less the same as someone who is presentably stoic and wishes to know what it’s like to be human.

Character Designs

Another significant difference is how the three main leads are designed. In the 2019 version, their human forms can pass off as human, but they do have some notable qualities that make them stand out such as their pointy ears and their pale olive skin tone. In the 1968 and 2006 versions, they’re a different story. As for Bem, he still carries a cane, wears, a suit, and a hat, but when you look at his face, he looks like Count Orlock from the classic horror movie, Nosferatu. When you look at Bela in the 2019 version, she’s a teenager in a school uniform and has red hair. However, in the 1968 and 2006 versions, she looks like a vampire in her human form and has black hair. As for Belo, in the 2019 version, he has white hair, wears red denim, and has regular shoes and always has on a pair of wireless headphones. In the 1968 and 2006 versions, he has blue hair, wears red sweats, and shoes that looks like something that elves would wear. While the 1968 and 2006 versions share the same character designs, the one notable difference is that even in their human forms, the main trio have three fingers in the 1969 versions, but in the 2006 and 2019 versions, they have five. As for their monster forms, the designs are pretty much the same in all versions.

Final Thoughts

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="VTCL-60506" text="" url="" ]

While all three versions of Bem are fundamentally the same about what it means to become human, all of their executions are different. If you want a serious action series, the 2019 version is obviously it. If you want something more for children and with comedy, then we also recommend the 1968 and 2006 versions. While the older versions are probably hard to find outside of Japan, if you can somehow find the older version to Bem, we say give them a shot and you’ll be surprised not just by how they’re different, but how they can be the same as well.

Now we finally know what's happening in Shiniki, and who's behind this messed up suicidal wave. However, we still know nothing about Ai Magase, an extremely seductive girl that will literally make you wanna die. Even though Babylon's plot was kinda difficult to follow for the first 2 episodes, all these plot-twists make total sense now: all the girls are one and the same, and knowing who to trust is now harder than ever. The more shocking moment of the episode? Well, that's easy to answer. I mean, the whole thing revolves around a new drug that can kill you while you sleep, without feeling any pain... so why would all the people jump from the highest building?! But with that comes the realization that a lot of people are willing to die right now if they have a chance of a painless goodbye, just like Okuda, Inaba, and Fumio. This revelation is vital to Babylon's story, but I'm sure it will keep you thinking for a while too...

It was bad enough that Kisaragi got his heart shattered, on the same bench, by two girls who both confessed they loved not him but his best buddy Sun. The problems worsened when a stalker named Sanshokuin then claimed she loved Kisaragi not because he's a kind soul, but for his hidden darker side. Then everything complicates even more when Sun confesses to Kisaragi that he loves Sanshokuin! Now we have a giant love rectangle —or pentagram— and Kisaragi is trying his hardest to help these girls get with Sun, despite them getting quite mad learning his newly obtained piece of information. With the two girls hating on him and Sun almost hating on him too (nice save Sanshokuin), Kisaragi seems to have troubles hitting him every which way. Our second episode ends on a worse note when someone (you can guess who) gathered all of our love strained high schoolers into the library where Kisaragi and Sanshokuin wait. Poor Kisaragi… Do you have a plan to get out of this new bind?

Alice rushes to Rulid Village to defend the townspeople. She unveils her armor and sword, ordering the town to evacuate while she takes up her sword once more to protect the people. Having discovered her path in life, she and Kirito depart together afterward. Meanwhile in the real world, Asuna and the members of Rath have evacuated to lower levels of their base after the attack, but it appears Kirito’s current state has been caused by his self-image being destroyed. Unfortunately, he is the only one who can save Alice and bring her out of the virtual world! Alice’s reveal in this episode was such a powerful moment! I honestly hadn’t thought about the fact that she had hid her identity from all the villagers, including her sister. When she used her authority to order them all to flee, we saw just how strong she has become, all the way from that timid little girl who was taken all those years ago. And her attack on all the goblins was impressive. The villagers were struggling to fend them off, but she barely lifted her sword and destroyed every single one of them! The animation and the soundtrack coincided perfectly with this moment, and we are hoping that this series continues to show us great scenes like this one moving forward.

Byakuya the Astronaut

Following up on the cliffhanger ending from last week, we finally get to learn what Senku’s relation to Ishigami Village truly is. Surprisingly, it all comes down to one simple observation – if everyone on Earth was petrified, then the only people who could’ve started the village would’ve been the astronauts on the International Space Station. Senku’s dad, Byakuya, abandoned his dream of becoming an astronaut after failing the clothed swimming test the first time he applied. But when he and Senku notice that the Japanese space program is hiring for the first time in ten years, Senku builds him a training wetsuit with electric nodes to target and strengthen specific muscles. Reinvigorated by his son’s devotion (much more so than by the suit itself), Byakuya passes the test and achieves his dream at last! Five years later, he travels to the ISS and forms fast friendships with the other four astronauts aboard, as well as the American singer Lillian Weinberg who is tagging along as a space tourist. The anime’s version of her “space concert” features British musical theater actress Laura Pitt-Pulford, who brings Lillian’s song “One Small Step” to life with a crystal-clear voice befitting of the beloved diva. We even get a sneak peek of a character who appears later in the story during the sequence where people around the world tune in to listen to the concert! Of course, the fun can only last so long, because the very next day a strange green light envelops Earth and the astronauts discover through livestream cameras that everyone has turned into statues. If they’re the last six people alive, they’ll have to take the future of humanity into their own hands...

Team Bonding

Maki officially joins the soft tennis club. During his first practice, Maki impresses the other boys by showing off his speed and stamina during their 20 lap run. Things get more interesting during Maki's second practice with the team. The boys head to the wall and practice their swings. Maki is easily able to get the hang of hitting the ball and the other boys soon join in. After Taiyou makes a mistake while trying to hit a ball, Maki calls out the rest of the team and points out their lack of skill despite having been playing for over a year. While it doesn't sit well with the rest of the team at first, they take Maki's comments to heart and decide to start practicing for real. Hoshiai no Sora has a lot going on with its characters and so far everyone has an interesting story that I can't wait to learn more about. Coming off an episode that ended with Maki being abused by his father, the second episode of Hoshiai no Sora surprisingly focuses a lot on the soft tennis club than anything else. Maki's second practice with the team is a great scene for both the characters and the overall story. We get to see the characters get into an argument about the intense and competitive world of sports without them having a major fallout that makes them all take extreme stances on the issue. The other boys are able to take Maki's criticism and use them to push forward in their training and it makes the whole scene that much more realistic and exciting. While Maki instantly being good at soft tennis is kind of a letdown, the way Hoshiai no Sora has handled the characters and the sports aspects of its story have been amazing so far.

Top 5 Scenes in Tsuujou Kougeki ga Zentai Kougeki de Ni-kai Kougeki no Okaa-san wa Suki Desu ka? (Okaa-san Online) A take on the Isekai trope that doesn’t take itself or its genre too seriously is Summer 2019’s Okaa-san Online! Mamako and her teenage son, Masato, end up in the world of a videogame all as a part of Mamako’s plan to grow closer to her son. The result? A lot of discomfort, comedy and eccentric characters joining the duo. With the summer season drawn to a close, we figured we’d mention 5 scenes from Okaa-san Online to look back on the series!

[ad_top2 class="mt40 mb40"]

1. Yay, I’m In Another World – MOM??? – Episode 1

When Masato signs the questionnaire that ends up being the reason why he and his mother are transported into the world of a videogame, he’s immediately excited to be the hero of his own adventure! However, his excitement is short-lived when his mother appears with her belongings in tow! It was a little bit sad to see his genuine elation watered down, but it was just as funny.

2. Mamako Wins a Beauty Pageant She Never Entered – Episode 7

Masato and the gang find themselves in an event that is modeled on a school festival! At the festival, Masato’s crew had decided on running a restaurant and it was filled to the brim with customers. However, it wasn’t just the restaurant that was shining – Mamako arrived at the ongoing beauty pageant that Medhimama wanted Medhi to win and won the hearts of the crowd, winning her the entire pageant!

3. Mamako Lulls Thugs to Sleep – Episode 11

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]

When Masato and the crew cross a gang of adventurers who’d broken away from their mothers to cause trouble, their leader Amante calls assassins to “deal” with the all-powerful Mamako. However, she uses her parental abilities to deal with the assassins, who were just rebellious children in the middle of conflict with their mothers. With powerful lullabies, Mamako sent the three-part assassin squad directly to La La Land – no teleportation magic required.

4. Medhi-ation – Episode 7

Medhimama’s true intentions behind forcing Medhi to be number 1 at everything come to the fore and the strain on their relationship becomes apparent. Medhi loses her mind in rage and transforms into a fire-breathing dragon – the final form borne of her contempt against her selfish mother. This scene was a cliffhanger and gave the events a weight that is not a normal feature for the show; which is normally more light-hearted.

5. Porter’s Interview – Episode 2

Mamako and Masato were in need of some party members as soon as they arrived; however, most of them were rejected by Mamako. Enter Porter, the adorable test-player who cannot fight but has the enthusiasm to do her best! After Porter identifies her strengths and weaknesses, Mamako jokingly tells her to marry her son and she immediately agrees, much to Masato’s surprise and dismay.

Final Thoughts

Okaa-san Online is an interesting bag for the approach it has to the videogame-Isekai idea. The pairing of protagonist-and-mother as a main character duo is new and rather interesting, even if some of the show’s angles regarding Mamako are a little… weird. Be that as it may, there is so much to enjoy with this show and our top 5 scenes are hopefully a testament to that. What are your favourite scenes from the anime? Here's Why You Need to Watch Higashi no Eden (Eden of the East)

[ad_top1 class="mb40"]
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="ACBA-10712" text="" url="" ]

Admittedly, 2009 was a whole decade ago, so this is a pretty old show right now. Which is all the more reason for us to be discussing Higashi no Eden (Eden of the East), a quirky and cool anime with a lightness of character juxtaposing reeling mystery and a layered storyline. Eden of the East is eleven episodes long with two movies which end the story. The series begins on the backdrop of Japan being hit by missile strikes in November 2010. The terrorist attacks resulted in no casualties and later became known as “Careless Monday”, soon disappearing into the thick fog of time. Three months later, we follow the life of Morimi Saki, a Japanese college student taking a graduation trip to America. She’s unexpectedly saved by a strange Japanese man known as Takizawa Akira, who is stark naked, amnesiac and in possession of a phone filled with 8.2 billion yen. Saki and Akira become friends, but this single interaction is the beginning of something sinister looming; something that could connect the Careless Monday, Akira and his missing memories.

Interesting Plotlines

The story is very important here because there are many events that seem to be separate and sporadic but actually contribute to the development of the story itself. The Careless Monday, the mysterious cell phone-wielding Selecao, Takizawa Akira’s missing memories and several other events create a gripping series in which up or down is never fully fleshed out to you until all of the pieces have been revealed and put together. In that regard, Eden of the East is stellar and reflects various genres from science fiction to action, romance and drama in a small torrent of well-written episodes.

Music

Put together by Kawai Kenji, the Eden of the East soundtrack is quite pleasant, with music that has electronic leanings. The various scenes of Eden of the East are hence a much better experience from the perspective of audio-visual stimulation; however, the opening and ending theme songs are perhaps the best musical treats the series has in store. Falling Down by Oasis is a somber yet hard-hitting opening performed in the English language. With lyrics like “I tried to talk to God with no avail”/”I said if you won’t save me, please don’t waste my time”, the series is set up for more than a happy-go-lucky story, but something heavier in composition. The ending theme song was performed by the now-disbanded School Food Punishment. Futuristic Imagination is perhaps one of the best songs of their anthology and the visuals for the ending theme render the Eden of the East ending theme one of the most unique you’ll ever see.

Art

There is a softness to the Eden of the East art that makes it a bit of a wolf in sheep’s clothing. The show has its fair share of gratuitous violence and exploration of mature themes; however, the art doesn’t quite reflect something with sprinkles of hardcore violence. The dissonance that arises because of the art and content of the actual series make certain events in the series all the more jarring because it doesn’t appear to be a show set up to show things like that. Oh, but it does...

Final Thoughts

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="ACXA-10791" text="" url="" ]

Eden of the East is a really unique show and sometimes it feels as if it got lost in the torrents of time. It is an interesting experience because the anime has many things going on at the same time; however, the experience is one definitely worth having and at a short 11 episodes not counting the two movies that come thereafter, it isn’t too great a time commitment either!

The summer 2019 anime season brought us all sorts of fun and unique anime. One of the funniest and strangest anime that came out was Tejina-senpai. Every episode of Tejina-senpai was filled with some hilarious and ridiculous scenes made even better by the wacky characters. Today we are going to be looking at the best moments that the series has to offer as we cover the top five scenes in Tejina-senpai. Let's get started.

[ad_top2 class="mt40 mb40"]

5. Visitors (Episode 5)

While reading in the classroom, Assistant overhears some girls talking about the magic club and how they are going to go check it out after school to see how strange it was. Not wanting his reputation to be ruined, Assistant rushes to the club to warn Senpai. Assistant's worst fear is realized when Senpai starts thinking of all the tricks she can show off to the girls. When the girls arrive, they see a headless Senpai with flags coming out of her mouth, causing them to run out of the room screaming. After seeing it all unfold, all Assistant can do is cry in the corner of the room. Most of the great scenes in the series are thanks to Senpai's antics, but Assistant is what makes this scene so great. Everything from his misconception of how he is perceived by his peers to his reaction when the girls leave the room is just absolutely hilarious.

4. Magic in the Park (Episode 2)

Assistant heads to the park for some relaxation only to find Senpai there trying to show off her magic to some kids. All of Senpai's attempts at impressing the kids fail. Assistant gives it a try and is able to impress the kids with the help of Behemoth-kun. Senpai tries to pull off some quick change magic to finally win the kids over only to realize she forgot to bring a change of clothing under her quick change clothes. It is always quite funny to see Senpai's failed magic tricks, but it is even funnier when she fails in front of an audience. You can't help but laugh at the children's blunt comments on her failed attempts to pull off some magic tricks.

3. Senpai in a Box (Episode 1)

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="crunchyroll" url="https://www.crunchyroll.com/magical-sempai/episode-1-the-unknown-sempai-sempai-in-a-box-sempai-calls-sempai-and-the-pigeon-786890" ]

Senpai takes control of the PA system to call Assistant to the magic club room. When he arrives, he sees Senpai along with some freshly baked bread. He takes a bite out of the bread only to find a hidden key inside of the bread. In order to get back at her, Assistant tricks her into hiding inside of the magic box and not telling her when to come out. This is a pretty short scene, but it is both funny and important to the overall series. This is the first scene where the names and roles of Senpai and Assistant are established and get us ready for all of the crazy comedy to come.

2. Fireworks (Episode 10)

After a fun-filled day at the beach, the members of the magic and chemistry club president Madara decide to finish up their day with some fireworks. With the sun having gone down, Senpai decides it would be the perfect time for some magic. Senpai pulls out some flash paper and tries to use it to reveal a hidden flower, only to accidentally light it on fire and throw it into the fireworks. Luckily, Madara still had some sparklers in her bag and the group got to have some fun with fireworks before they went home. This may just be the most entertaining failed bit of magic in the entire series. Senpai's failed magic has a much more eventful end in this scene and we're treated to a wonderful fireworks show. What makes the scene even better is they get to have a nice ending thanks to Madara.

1. The Confession (Episode 5)

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="crunchyroll" url="https://www.crunchyroll.com/magical-sempai/episode-5-observers-and-sempai-onion-sempai-chemistry-sempai-unexpected-sempai-inviting-sempai-786894" ]

Senpai hides inside of the magic box in order to surprise Assistant when he arrives. However, before she is able to come out of the box, Assistant sits on top of it, not knowing she was inside. While hiding in the box, Senpai overhears Assistant talking to himself and revealing his true feelings and talking about off the good things he sees. Senpai believes he is talking about her, but in reality, Assistant is actually talking about Behemoth-kun. This is the best scene in Tejina-senpai and features all of the elements that make it a fun series. It is such a ridiculous scene and you can't help but feel a little bad so Senpai.

Final Thoughts

That is it for our list of the top five scenes in Tejina-senpai. Hopefully, you enjoyed looking back at all of these scenes and remembering how great of an anime Tejina-senpai is. What did you think of Tejina-senpai? What was your favorite scene? Let us know by leaving us a comment.

Who it Caters to

Earlier in the year—January to be specific—fans of No More Heroes were given a new title to enjoy while Suda 51—creator of No More Heroes—tried to fund a new entry in the series. Titled, Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes fans were even more surprised to see their beloved hack and slash title turn into a retro-action themed top down beat ‘em up and the game was reviewed with mixed results. Despite the ho hum reviews—we had some choice thoughts on it as well—another version released on the PS4 just recently titled Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes-Complete Edition. Is this updated version better than the one for the Nintendo Switch or should fans pass it up and wait for No More Heroes III? We find out in our full review of Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes-Complete Edition for the PS4!

What to Expect

Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes-Complete Edition is a big departure from the No More Heroes franchise in terms of gameplay. Paying homage to older retro styled games, Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes-Complete Edition is a top down beat ‘em up/action title where players take control of either Travis Touchdown or Bad Man. Players can enjoy a single player experience fighting tons of various baddies or enjoy couch co-op with a friend! This latest complete edition of Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes offers up all the DLC of the Nintendo Switch version and some enhanced visuals/gameplay tweaks to work for the PS4. Level up, fight your way through several strange games and show you’re the ultimate gamer assassin in Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes-Complete Edition!
[ad_top2 class="mt40 mb40"]

Story

Trying to lay low and out of the sight of other assassins, Travis Touchdown has been living his life in a trailer far removed from society. Unfortunately, Bad Man—the father of Bad Girl seeks to kill Travis for murdering his daughter and has finally tracked down the legendary otaku assassin. During their fight, Travis’ strange Death Drive MK-II gaming console activates and teleports the two warriors into the games! Now the two assassins must team up to survive this deadly game and find six legendary Death Balls to revive Bad Girl and end this oddity. Travis has been on plenty of strange adventures but his newest will be quite a wild ride!

Gameplay

While we know many gamers/fans played the original Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes for the Nintendo Switch, our review will assume you’re new to this odd spin-off title. Those that want to know if this PS4 version has anything different than the Nintendo Switch version will be sad to hear not really. If you missed out on the previous two DLC campaigns, then you’ll be happy to know Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes-Complete Edition contains both of them. Other than that, Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes-Complete Edition is basically the same game as the Nintendo Switch version and that is both a blessing and a curse. Those new to the changes found in Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes-Complete Edition might want to pay close attention. Unlike the series mainstay combat that is hack and slash orientated, Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes-Complete Edition is a top down retro inspired action/beat ‘em up title. Players still don the beam sword of Travis now with his “partner” Bad Man but gone is the flashy wrestling moves and over the top anime inspired story. Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes-Complete Edition feels like an homage to the 70-80s of gaming with retro text based story moments, waves of enemies and visuals that match the older consoles of yesteryear. This seems like the perfect No More Heroes spin-off but sadly what works in Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes-Complete Edition only works in small droves. Let’s first start with the good. Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes-Complete Edition is a fun beat ‘em up where you can still utilize Travis’ beam sword in various combos and with special abilities like past titles. Bad Man might only use a generic bat but he’s no slouch in fighting and produces some heavy hits that make enemies disappear with comedic strikes. Add a co-op mode and a friend can play as one of the two heroes for some truly enjoyable couch co-op! In terms of gameplay, Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes-Complete Edition works when you aren’t playing it for hours on end. Those who do try to beat down every enemy in the Death Drive MK-II will learn that repetition is the worst boss of all time…
Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes-Complete Edition is painfully repetitive and even with a friend, it will drive you to boredom after the first few hours. While there are different gameplay sequences in Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes-Complete Edition—such as some motorcycle bits and puzzle-like modes—none of these gameplay formats ever do much to wow you. Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes-Complete Edition works in every gameplay style it mirrors from other genres but it always feels paper thin which is a shame for how amazing the main No More Heroes games feel in comparison. The pains of Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes-Complete Edition continue in the visuals department. While Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes-Complete Edition looks a bit better during gameplay sequences on the PS4, the cutscenes look like they were ported from the Nintendo Switch. This is a bit upsetting as we’d love if some of the cutscenes could have polished up a bit or even changed for this complete edition version. Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes-Complete Edition still has that loveable No More Heroes aesthetic which is a win in the plus column but for an almost $40 dollar game, we’d expect some higher end visuals.
Ending on a positive note, Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes-Complete Edition does come with the two DLC campaigns—Black Dandelion and Bubblegum Fatale—which are fun additions overall. These additions both have more story parts, new characters to control, new skills to nab and offer up a nice bit of incentive for fans of No More Heroes lore. Are they enough to make Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes-Complete Edition worth the price tag? Heck yeah as these offer several hours of bonus content between both. For those who own them both on the Nintendo Switch though, we can’t say it warrants rebuying Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes for the PS4 though.
[ad_middle class="mt40 mb40"]

Honey's Gameplay Consensus:

In many ways having Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes-Complete Edition on the PS4—and PC via Steam—seems almost unnecessary. Many fans were slightly annoyed that the beloved third person hack and slash became an over the top beat ‘em up and many are just glad a true No More Heroes game is coming in the near future. If you weren’t able to enjoy Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes-Complete Edition maybe due to not owning a Nintendo Switch or for various other reasons then you can finally play Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes-Complete Edition on the PS4. Just don’t expect a great version of No More Heroes as Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes-Complete Edition still won’t appeal to the grand mass of fans. The gameplay still is extremely repetitive and the graphics won’t impress everyone, especially when you watch the cutscenes. However, Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes-Complete Edition still is a fun title with a friend and we think it still has a great story filled with gaming jokes/references.

Honey's Pros:

  • Tons of gaming references that should appeal to old time gamers
  • Fun co-op gameplay
  • Solid story that has some nice twists and turns to enjoy
  • Slightly enhanced visuals outside of the cutscenes
  • Contains all the DLC found on the Nintendo Switch version

Honey's Cons:

  • Still has a very repetitive gameplay format
  • Won’t appeal to all No More Heroes fans
  • Cutscenes look kind of bad on the PS4
  • Still needed more voice work for Travis

Honey's Final Verdict:

Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes-Complete Edition isn’t going to wow you if you didn’t like the Nintendo Switch version and isn’t worth it if you bought all of the previous DLC for the original version. That being said, we did like having Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes-Complete Edition on the PS4 giving us a new way to play Travis’ non-canonical story. While the gameplay remains largely the same and the visuals can look a bit odd on a stronger console, Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes-Complete Edition still is a solid title that will appeal to die-hard fans of the series. Here’s a question for you all. Are you excited for No More Heroes III? Comment below to let us know! Be sure to keep stuck to our hive for even more game reviews done by us here at Honey’s Anime!

Today we are going to be covering some of these amazing as we take a look at the top five scenes in Dumbbell Nan Kilo Moteru? Let us get started.

[ad_top2 class="mt40 mb40"]

5. Thank You (Episode 12)

While on the Spring Break trip with the gym, Hibiki and Akemi have a heart to heart on the beach. The girls share a moment as they reminisce about how far they've come and how thankful they are to each other. Hibiki thanks Akemi for pushing her to go to the gym, while Akemi thanks Hibiki for helping her become friends with Ayaka and Gina. This is nice heartwarming moment between and Hibiki and Akemi. This was a great way to end the series and show us just how far Hibiki has come since the beginning. Her journey wasn't easy, but seeing her enjoying her new life with all of the new friends she has made just puts a smile on your face.

4. The Muscle Gals (Episode 7)

Seeing the gym was closed for the day, Gina suggests they jog to Akihabara in order to compete in an idol competition. Everyone agrees and the girls head to Akihabara. During the competition the girls ride in on some of the muscular men from the gym and show off their unique skills of hand to hand combat, bench pressing, and finishing it all with a deadlift from Satomi. Despite the crowd loving their performance, The Muscle Gals don't make the cut. One of the things that makes Dumbbell Nan Kilo Moteru? is all of the wacky scenarios the girls find themselves in. The idol competition may just be the best one in the entire series. Their whole performance is enjoyable and hilarious and it only gets better the longer it goes on.

3. Barnold’s Competition (Episode 9)

Machio's former trainer and mentor Barnold Shortsinator comes to Japan and offers Machio a spot in a competition he sponsors. The next day, Machio heards to the competition along with Hibiki and her friends who came to cheer him on. Machio steps up to begin his turn and with one pose is able to shock the crowd and the other competitors instantly winning the competition. Seeing his progress, Barnold offers Machio an opportunity to compete against him, but Machio declines because he doesn't want to leave the members of Silverman Gym behind. Machio is one of the best characters in Dumbbell Nan Kilo Moteru? and it is nice to see him get a whole episode to himself. Most of the time Machio is on screen, he is just there to be funny, but this scene does a great job at showing us a more intense side to Machio and how seriously he takes his job.

2. Arm Wrestling (Episode 6)

Hibiki decides to enter an arm-wrestling competition in order to win the grand prize and buy a home theater system. On the day of the competition Hibiki learns that only one other girl had entered. The other girl in the competition is a Russian girl who just arrived in Japan named Gina. Thinking she'll have a tough match ahead of her, Hibiki prepares to give it her all to win. Much to her surprise though, Hibiki is able to easily defeat Gina and claim the grand prize. This is one of the funniest moments in the entire series and it is also the first time we get to meet Gina. What makes the scene funny is that there was so much build-up to the match only for it to end in an instant

1. The First Workout (Episode 1)

Hibiki and Akemi begin their first workout at Silverman Gym along with their trainer Machio. They start out with some bench press and Hibiki is only able to lift the bar. Struggling to do three sets of 10, Hibiki is amazed and a little disheartened seeing how much Akemi is able to lift. Machio comes over and gives her a little pep talk, and reveals his shredded body as he encourages her to keep up with her workouts. This scene gives us a little bit of everything and shows off all of the great aspects of the series. It is hilarious, we get to learn a lot about Hibiki and Akemi, and there is even a little bit of fanservice. However, what really makes this scene the best is the unexpected reveal of Machio's ripped body and seeing his little head on such a muscular frame.

Final Thoughts

That is it for our list of the top five scenes in Dumbbell nan Kilo Moteru? There are so many hilarious scenes in the series and hopefully you enjoyed looking back at what made them all great. Do you think Dumbbell nan Kilo Moteru? was a good anime? What was your favorite scene in the series? Let us know in the comments.

In ancient Japan, life isn’t easy. Tanjiro Kamado knows this first hand, as he’s been responsible for his mother and his five siblings ever since his father died. On a night when Tanjiro doesn’t arrive home from a sales trip, they all are massacred by a demon so that the young boy arrives only to see them all dead, except for his sister Nezuko, who due to her multiple wounds being infected with demon blood turns into a flesh-eating monster herself. And while she manages not to eat him and keep some of her humanity, Tanjiro swears that he will find a cure for her and destroy all the demons who caused so much grief not only to him but to countless families. With a setup like this, of course, there are many heartbreaking scenes. Here are the 5 most memorable to us.

SPOILERS AHEAD

[ad_top2 class="mt40 mb40"]

5. Nezuko’s Transformation (Episode 1)

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="crunchyroll" url="https://www.crunchyroll.com/demon-slayer-kimetsu-no-yaiba/episode-1-cruelty-782932" ]

The first scene in Kimetsu no Yaiba is a crying Tanjiro running down a snowy forest with the unconscious Nezuko on his back. We don’t know what happened, much less who they are, but we can see Tanjiro’s desperation as he cries and wonders why his family was struck by misfortune. And after a few flashbacks that tell us exactly how his life was and how it was destroyed, suddenly Nezuko opens her eyes… and they’re no longer human. The sweet girl we saw minutes before is now a monster that immediately attacks Tanjiro with the very clear intent to eat him. It's only thanks to his fast reflexes that he manages to put his ax between her teeth and, just when we think one of the two will die, we see that Nezuko is crying. It’s impossible not to cry with her and her brother since we know neither deserved the horrors that will follow.

4. The Reveal of Sabito and Makomo’s Fate (Episode 4)

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="crunchyroll" url="https://www.crunchyroll.com/demon-slayer-kimetsu-no-yaiba/episode-4-final-selection-782935" ]

As he was training to become a demon slayer, Tanjiro hit a plateau where he was unable to advance. Abandoned by his teacher Urokodaki, he is confronted by two fighters, the strong Sabito who pushes him to really understand Urokodaki’s teachings, and the frail Makomo who explains to him what’s behind said teachings. It’s not until he reaches the Final Selection that Tanjiro learns that both Sabito and Makomo are ghosts: They were killed by a Hand Demon during their Final Selection exam precisely because they were Urokodaki’s students. We see how they died, tortured and scared. It's a heartbreaking scene that reminds us of the stakes that Tanjiro will face in the future.

3. The First Encounter Between Muzan and Tanjiro. (Episode 7)

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="crunchyroll" url="https://www.crunchyroll.com/demon-slayer-kimetsu-no-yaiba/episode-7-muzan-kibutsuji-782938" ]

Thanks to his keen sense of smell, it’s quite early on when Tanjiro finds the demon that turned his sister, a creature known as Muzan Kibutsuji. We know their encounter will be short, as it’s only episode 7, but the way it’s cut short, just after Tanjiro touches Muzan’s shoulder in a busy street in Tokyo is what makes it heartbreaking. See, Muzan has a young human child with him, who calls him Papa. And as Tanjiro is reeling from that revelation, he finds out that Muzan also has a wife. Both the child and the woman are humans, and Tanjiro doesn’t know if they know the truth about Muzan, which is improbable. And as he’s still trying to understand, Muzan casually turns a passerby into a demon, just to distract the Slayer. So many lives destroyed in just a second and for no reason. It’s hard not to share Tanjiro’s tears.

2. Rui’s Human Past (Episode 21)

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="crunchyroll" url="https://www.crunchyroll.com/demon-slayer-kimetsu-no-yaiba/episode-21-against-corps-rules-786934" ]

While the whole spider demon clan is pretty tragic when we realize that they were being forced to play house with Rui and were tortured, punished, and killed if they made the young-looking demon angry, we can’t really feel that sorry for them since they were demons and had eaten a couple dozen humans each before arriving at spider mountain. But when Rui himself dies, we get a glimpse of his past and the human he used to be before meeting Muzan and it’s impossible not to feel bad for him. Rui was just a sickly boy whose parents made a deal with Muzan, who was pretending to be a doctor at the time, to give him a stronger body. When they realized that Rui was killing humans, his parents were ready to kill him and then die with him, but Rui killed them. And if that wasn’t tragic enough, when Rui finally dies at the Slayer’s hands, their souls were waiting for him, ready to accompany Rui to hell. Even Tanjiro cries at the grief Rui gives out.

1. The Ending Sequence

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="crunchyroll" url="https://www.crunchyroll.com/demon-slayer-kimetsu-no-yaiba/episode-1-cruelty-782932" ]

Some may consider that we’re stretching the concept of “scene” here, but as we see it every episode, we figure it counts. It’s really heartbreaking as it starts with beautiful scenes of the Kamado family’s life before the fateful night that destroyed them all. We even see Tanjiro’s father dance, even if we don’t get the full meaning of that little snippet until much later into the series. It's a tragic memento of what could have been if their lives hadn't been destroyed by Muzan’s cruelty. And as we learn that the souls of the dead watch over their families, we can imagine Tanjiro and Nezuko’s siblings and parents crying as their relatives suffer.

Final Thoughts

Kimetsu no Yaiba is a very emotional series. Every person we meet, human or demon, has a scarring backstory and the more we learn about them, the harder it is to understand why some of the demon slayers seem to be unable to understand or empathize with them. Tanjiro and Nezuko’s journey at times put them at odds with other humans who seem even crueler than demons. So we really need to ask you, which scenes of Kimetsu no Yaiba made you cry? Let us know in the comments below.

5. The Patch Test (Episode 3)

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="crunchyroll" url="https://www.crunchyroll.com/are-you-lost/episode-3-master-of-the-island-786905" ]

Homare and Asuka set out into the forest to find food, and Asuka finds something that resembles a potato. “The tuber could be poisonous”, Homare warns, but Asuka insists the tuber she pulled out from the ground is edible. To find out if it’s edible or not, Homare must do a patch test. A patch test, or an edibility test, is a test to see if the plant is safe for consumption by cutting the plant open and pressing it on the skin and wait for a reaction. If there’s no irritation or discoloration of the skin, then it’s safe to eat the plant. Asuka waves her butt at Homare and enthusiastically suggests using their butts for the test. Homare happily obliges and shoves the plant up Asuka’s ass. Short, quick execution, and very funny, Homare looking indifferent throughout the whole moment was priceless.

4. Onsen Scene (Episode 8)

Homare and the gang set out to explore the rest of the island and they discover an abandoned dock, some materials, a pair of rusted blades, citrus fruits, and an abandoned run-down house. But the biggest discovery is the existence of an onsen/hot spring and the girls quickly take advantage of the discovery to take a bath and relax in a moment of bliss; luxuries that are very rare on the island. Episode 8 is your obligatory beach/onsen episode and while we always see the girls in their bare essentials throughout the show, this is the only time we see them naked, as much as the age ratings allow, at least. Apart from seeing the girls unwind (and Asuka gets struck by lightning), we still get to learn about survival, like figuring out your location on the planet by looking at the stars and constellations courtesy of Homare, and some astronomy lessons by Mutsu.

3. Finding Shion (Episode 11)

Shion has drifted into the ocean and landed on a different island. Meanwhile, at Idiot Island, Homare has already set off on a raft, carrying nothing to gauge distance or direction in order to find her stranded companion. Everything seems hopeless but Homare recalls her time with her father who taught her to remain calm, never give up, and look at things from every angle. Homare uses the improvised bamboo paddle to vault herself into the air to get a wider view of the ocean and then finally finds the island where Shion is suspected to drift towards. And Homare’s intuition is right on the money as finds the lonely and sobbing Shion. Being stranded in the ocean is one scary experience and it was hard to tell how Homare would even find the island with no tools. But in the end, Homare surprised us with her experience and thinking out of the box.

2. Rabbit Meat Preparation (Episode 6)

Homare, Shion, Mutsu, and Asuka have been on the island for several days now and they’re living off insects, crustaceans, and they finally have some fish in episode 5. On a routine round in the forest, Mutsu and Asuka find that a rabbit has finally been caught in one of the traps they’ve set. Rabbit meat is now on the menu, girls! The rabbit meat preparation is the entire focus of episode 6 and it’s one of the best scenes of the show with many great moments like how to prepare the rabbit meat, breaking certain stones to make them into cutting tools, Mutsu redeeming herself by volunteering to skin the rabbit, Shion being bossy and suggesting they cook the rabbit in French cuisine style, using whatever edible plants and resources that have as ingredients, using a sundial as a cooking timer, and after a hearty meal, Asuka holds a rabbit bone to thank the slain creature for its nutritious meat.

1. Surprise Rim Job (Episode 12)

Homare has found Shion on another island and they’re heading back to their island, Idiot Island. But travelling back to their home island will be an arduous task because Homare forgot to bring drinkable water and they’re drifting through the ocean on a very sunny day. Homare did collect two bottles of dirty water from a cave in an experiment to sanitize the water using the sun, but removing the impurities would take a long time. In a last-ditch effort, Homare proposes to Shion they take in the dirty water through their anuses because the colon can absorb water and the colon prevents bacteria from entering the body. How will they administer the water through the anus? Using their mouths, of course! Sounan Desu ka? has many crazy survival solutions but nothing tops this unorthodox solution to dehydration. Shion reluctantly bends over and Homare transfers a mouthful of the dirty water using her tongue through Shion’s anus. After Shion is rehydrated, it’s Homare’s turn to take in water and asks Shion to specifically administer the water 10 times by digging in her tongue… Seeing Shion staring at Homare’s bare ass with a dumb look on her face is just priceless. Oh and it doesn’t end there: you can see, though at a distance, Homare and Shion taking turns digging their faces into each other’s butts.

Final Thoughts

Say what you want about Sounan Desu ka? being unrealistic, but it’s an interesting anime with a unique take on survival that doesn’t take itself too seriously. If you were looking for a Lord of the Flies, or just a Cast Away-like anime, then Sounan Desu ka? is not it. But if you’re just looking for a fun anime about girls stranded on an island, then Sounan Desu ka? is an anime worth watching.

Dumbbell Nan Kilo Moteru? (How Heavy Are the Dumbbells You Lift?) Introduction and Story

Cute girls doing cute things has been the winning formula in anime throughout the last decade, consistently producing popular series that aim to show just how cute their cute thing can be. This template has become so popular it’s been applied to everything from music, to camping, to bread (for some reason), and has reportedly been successful in drawing increased public attention to the topics the anime series have covered. In light of this success, semi-newcomer director Mitsue Yamazaki (Tada-kun wa Koi wo Shinai) and cute-girls anime pioneer studio Doga Kobo have graced us with Dumbbell Nan Kilo Moteru? The plot involves high school gyaru Hibiki Sakura who joins the famous Silver Man gym after failing to stay committed to working out at home. She and the audience are treated to a dozen episodes of exercise edutainment and gratuitous fit-girl fanservice courtesy of easygoing personal trainer Naruzou Machio, student council president and muscle adoring Akemi Souryuuin, boxer best friend Ayaka Uehara, love-starved teacher Satomi Tachibana, and fiery arm wrestler Gina Boyd. Their shared quest for body improvement promises to treat the voyeur viewer to endearing escapades and fitness fetishization.

1. Smartbell

The most important way Dumbbell distinguishes itself from the pack is through its focus on viewer education. While its genre contemporaries mostly commodify their subject matter into moe gimmicks, this show is the rare exception that is not only well researched, but takes time out of each episode to directly educate the viewer on proper workout routines, how to develop good eating habits and dispel common exercise myths (did you know you’re not supposed to stretch before a workout? We didn’t). Helpful facts like these are sprinkled throughout each episode and the show spaces them out evenly while giving them all a lighthearted tone which keeps the pacing tight and never makes the lessons come off as condescending. If you want to learn how to reach your fitness goals, a gym membership is probably your best avenue, but if you must do so through anime, this one will definitely help.

2. Motivation

Some people listen to music during their workouts, cool people watch anime. And since the entire point of Dumbbell is to sell viewers on how awesome exercising is, its visuals paint a picture of the practice that’s sure to keep you in the spirit to sweat. Male characters are animated like powerful shonen heroes and female ones are all drawn with lean alluring physiques. The aesthetic admittedly leans much more towards male appeal, but never to the point of exclusivity and people of all walks of life will be able to get behind Dumbbell’s attractive portrayal of exercise.

Why You Should Skip Dumbbell Nan Kilo Moteru? (How Heavy Are the Dumbbells You Lift?)

1. How Many Unrealistic Body Standards Can You Lift?

Since the series begins with Hibiki deciding she needs to lose weight, you would expect her to be at least a bit heavier than average, but aside from maybe 2 shots she’s drawn with a completely average build before she ever starts losing weight and the implication that other people with completely normal body types should immediately lose weight is an uncomfortable one. Some could attribute this inconsistency to cultural differences, but the fact that Japanese people tend to be on the skinnier side means little when we don’t even see any improvement on this journey of body improvement. Later episodes repeatedly discuss how well Hibiki’s figure is improving… only to show her looking exactly like how she started, which heavily undercuts Dumbbell’s narrative flow.

2. Easy on the Ecchi

Arguably the biggest error in bringing Yabako Sandrovich’s manga to television was losing the images’ lewdness. The animated scenes still maintain a sexual direction through choice of angles and the occasional moan from a girl lifting weights, but it’s nothing compared to the manga which was overflowing with detailed body outlines borderline o-faces and so many ecchi poses that it even makes the act of grabbing a water bottle seem like a sex act. The girls in the anime are still drawn attractively, but it loses a large portion of the manga’s appeal by toning down its sexual angle. To be fair, some may enjoy the series more without these fetishistic aspects, but those whose enjoyment of ecchi shows is inversely proportionate to how ecchi they are are probably just better off not watching ecchi shows regardless.

This workout fanservice show may lean much more on the workout than the fanservice, but what it does with that stance works out (heh) well enough to be educational and entertaining. Be sure to leave a comment telling us what you thought of the show and how heavy the dumbbells you lift are and be sure to stick around for more on anime and fitness… or at least one of those.

Toaru Kagaku no Accelerator (A Certain Scientific Accelerator) Introduction and Story

Another side-story within the hugely popular Toaru Majutsu no Index (A Certain Magical Index) series, Toaru Kagaku no Accelerator (A Certain Scientific Accelerator) follows the titular villain-turned-antihero Accelerator, the strongest Level 5 esper in Academy City with the incredibly versatile ability to manipulate the vectors of anything around him. The story follows the Necromancer Arc. A mysterious rogue faction within Academy City’s security force Anti-Skill known as DA has emerged. Made up of officers who received disciplinary action (DA) for their extreme methods and overzealous pursuit of justice, the organization has grown into a powerful secret society with support from influential members of society, including Nakimoto Rizou who is on the city’s Board of Directors. This has allowed them access to experimental military technology and funded the work of deranged neuroscientist Hishigata Mikihiko in amplifying esper abilities from dead bodies using specialized machines modeled after magical techniques developed by the Rosenthal family of necromancers. Accelerator finds himself in the middle of this conflict as family head Esther Rosenthal tries to escape from DA, leading to a battle with one of DA’s experimental Coffin devices at the hospital he was recovering in and, later, an investigation into DA when he discovers they’re also after Last Order.

Why You Should Watch Toaru Kagaku no Accelerator (A Certain Scientific Accelerator)
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="crunchyroll" url="https://www.crunchyroll.com/a-certain-scientific-accelerator" ]

1. Darker Story

Like fellow Index side story Toaru Kagaku no Railgun (A Certain Scientific Railgun), Accelerator focuses on the dark side of Academy City, even more so than Railgun. Besides some brief moments of levity, Accelerator has an overall serious tone and edginess that comes through with its antihero protagonist, spotlight on the corrupt and evil elements of Academy City’s underworld, and rather grim storytelling in general that deals with trauma, suicide, obsession, and necromancy/death. While maybe not always successful, this does add greater depth and variety to the overall series.

2. Good Character Moments

With Accelerator getting more screen time than ever before, fans of his character will definitely enjoy getting to see more of him in action with his trademark laugh and gritty personality. His interactions with Last Order continue to be very cute, saving the series from becoming completely downcast, and the new character Esther Rosenthal was also handled well. Anti-Skill member (and P.E. teacher) Aiho Yomikawa is also given solid attention in this series and has some great moments, including a sweet action sequence where she does a huge boosted jump up a wall and then attacks a bunch of DA soldiers with her shield.

3. Solid Soundwork

The Index series is known for having good music and A Certain Scientific Accelerator is no exception. The opening "Shadow is the Light" by THE SIXTH LIE, in particular, is a perfect fit for the tone of the series and Accelerator as a character and the OST as a whole is well done and memorable, especially the energetic rock used in many battles. The voice work is likewise strong with plenty of intense Accelerator monologues, Last Order antics, and other solids performances like Yurika Kubo as Esther.

A Certain Scientific Accelerator Opening

[ad_middle class="mt40"]
Why You Should Skip Toaru Kagaku no Accelerator (A Certain Scientific Accelerator)

1. “Just Okay” Animation

While there were still some strong sequences in Accelerator, it was not a sakuga tour de force by any means and arguably relied a bit too much on 3DCG and effects for some of its battle sequences. It would have been awesome to see some of these fights animated to super-high modern production values like some other action series this season but we still enjoyed what we got for what it was.

2. Character Development Mixed Bag

The characterization of returning characters is perfectly fine in Accelerator and we also thought the development of some of the new characters, particularly Esther Rosenthal, was good as well. However, there isn’t any substantial change seen in main character Accelerator at all, which feels a bit like a missed opportunity to delve more deeply into the titular character’s personality and growth.

3. Reliant on Previous Series

This is a pretty minor complaint considering this is how all side-stories work to some extent but it seems like Accelerator is more reliant on the viewer having seen the overall Index series than with other series, including A Certain Scientific Railgun. Many elements of the backstory and world are not explained well enough for a new viewer to really understand. This is better than over-explaining, though, and probably not important to the intended audience.

Final Thoughts

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="NEOGDS-351872" text="" url="" ]

Overall, A Certain Scientific Accelerator is a good entry in ‘a certain magical/scientific series’ that many fans will enjoy for its showcase of a fan-favorite character, memorable music, and exploration of the unseemly corners of the larger series’ world. It may be held back a bit by certain production values and limited time to delve deeper into certain characters, but is also commendable for being much less convoluted than other entries in the series. If you’re an Index and/or Railgun fan, it’s worth checking out! Let us know what you think in the comments section below and be sure to stick around Honey’s for more of all things awesome, anime and otherwise! We’re definitely excited for the upcoming Toaru Kagaku no Railgun T. Until then, see ya~!

The latest side story in a certain magical/scientific series, A Certain Scientific Accelerator puts the spotlight on the titular fan-favorite antihero as he fights to investigate a rogue faction within Anti-Skill and unravel their mysterious use of necromancy within the dark side of Academy City. Today we’re counting down some of our favorite moments from the series. Spoilers abound, so tread carefully. Let’s accelerate to the list!

[ad_top2 class="mt40 mb40"]

5. Aiho Yomikawa Boost (Episode 5)

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="crunchyroll" url="https://www.crunchyroll.com/a-certain-scientific-accelerator/episode-5-da-security-officer-darkness-787246" ]

While sometimes in more of a comedic role in other installments of the series, P.E. teacher and Anti-Skill member Aiho Yomikawa was given a lot of chances to show off her combat ability in A Certain Scientific Accelerator and we think this scene from episode 5 takes the cake. Being boosted up for a high jump by her teammate Alto, Aiho bravely chases after DA soldiers, taking them on while outnumbered. Using her shield to plow through them while reflecting bullets was exciting and showed that she can be badass even without esper or magical powers.

4. Battle with Sakuragi Naruha & Scavenger (Episode 6)

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="crunchyroll" url="https://www.crunchyroll.com/a-certain-scientific-accelerator/episode-6-scavenger-corpse-eating-squad-787247" ]

Sakuragi Naruha, or Naru to her teammates, is a newly-introduced character in Accelerator who is a member of the mercenary group Scavenger. With the ability to form and control paper with extremely powerful psychokinesis, her fight with Esther, Huotou, and Accelerator was a highlight for the series for us. Her bizarre bear-suit transformation and drill arms to fight Huotou’s earth armor was really exciting, even more so when Accelerator comes into the picture and survives their deadly team attacks. The iron maiden-like trap was particularly cool and one of the most badass moments for Accelerator when it comes out unharmed.

3. Third Number Reactivated (Episode 4)

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="crunchyroll" url="https://www.crunchyroll.com/a-certain-scientific-accelerator/episode-4-third-number-the-pseudo-soul-huotou-787245" ]

Speaking of Hasami/Huotou, her “reactivation” was one of the most interesting scenes in the early part of the series. This was made all the more impactful after we saw her troubled life and terrifying death at the hands of DA beforehand through Accelerator’s vision. Seeing her ‘reborn’ with the Huotou implanted in her by Esther and almost immediately unleashing her new strength against the DA agents sent to destroy her body was a memorable moment, full of both sadness at Hasami’s fate and a sort of righteous vengeance carried out against her attackers.

2. Hero Speech & Esther’s Will to Fight (Episode 11)

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="crunchyroll" url="https://www.crunchyroll.com/a-certain-scientific-accelerator/episode-11-perfect-golem-perfect-body-787252" ]

While this series was full of some fun lines and monologues, one that stood out the most to us was Accelerator’s speech to Esther as they are preparing to take on the horrifically transformed perfect golem Hirumi. Comforting her, he says "A hero is someone who doesn't hesitate to stretch out their hands and run as fast as they can toward what they're trying to save. What is it that you want to save with your hands?" Esther remembers the promise she made with Hirumi in the past, knowing now what she wants to protect. The focus on hands and Esther and Hirumi’s pinky promise was a nice touch and the triumphant “Let’s kick that monster’s ass!” was a solid lead-up to the final fight.

1. Finale (Episode 12)

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="crunchyroll" url="https://www.crunchyroll.com/a-certain-scientific-accelerator/episode-12-something-to-protect-787253" ]

Obviously, for a grand finale, you’ve got to pull out all the stops if possible so this last episode had a lot to live up to. We’ll cheat a little bit and include two climaxes from the last episode here. The first one being Esther running up the side of Hirumi’s transformed body with Emperor Shun's Blade and delivering the final blow with help from Huotou, Misaka 10046, and Accelerator. We finally got to see her resolve bear fruit and the final meeting with Hirumi afterward was both touching and tragic. The other climax being Accelerator absorbing and deflecting the immense energy explosion from the golem’s corpse, nearly killing himself in the process to protect Last Order. You’ve got to love Accelerator’s black tornado wings and resulting crazy laser blast! While we never really thought he had died, it made for a satisfying conclusion made more exciting by the false resolution beforehand. Ultimately seeing Accelerator act heroically in the end takes the cake for us, making it our top moment of the series.

Final Thoughts

Altogether, A Certain Scientific Accelerator was a pretty solid entry in its series that had its share of noteworthy moments. Some other scenes that didn’t quite make this list but still deserve a mention include Last Order and Misaka 10046 fighting over who gets to be Accelerator’s nurse in the hospital from the epilogue, Hirumi’s suicide video from episode 8, and Accelerator’s awesome display of power in episode 9, complete with flaming tornado! Like our list? Let us know your own thoughts in the comments section below and be sure to stick around Honey’s for more memorable moments from the latest anime series and more! Until next time...

BEASTARS and How It Relates to Modern Times

Netflix made big waves in 2018 with its adaptation of Keisuke Itagaki’s hit manga Grappler Baki, so now that his daughter Paru Itagaki has her own hit manga series in the form of BEASTARS, bringing it into the world of animation as well was an obvious move. What’s less obvious is whether or not watching BEASTARS will be worth your while. After all, it’s clearly very different from Baki and its premise of anthropomorphic animals of different species all struggling to coexist in an uneasy society makes it feel like it could be little more than anime Zootopia. Luckily for you, you’ve got people like us who’ve read ahead in the manga to tell you everything you need to know about the ethos of that furry animated Netflix series you’re going to have to watch now that Bojack Horseman is being canceled.

Meat Cute

They may wear human clothes and live human lives, but the population of BEASTARS’ world is very much in touch with their animal sides. The most important way in which these manifest is in the animals' dieting habits, specifically in the fact that the anthropomorphic herbivores still eat vegetation, while the carnivores eat herbivores. The only thing that keeps society afloat is the use of synthetic meat, eliminating their need to kill for survival, but failing to suppress their craving for flesh. The story opens with the murder of an alpaca by an unseen carnivore—something extremely rare in the story’s present—which immediately causes massive harm to the relations between herbivores and carnivores. The plot follows Legosi, a young wolf studying at Cherryton Academy who doesn’t quite fit the traditional idea of a carnivore. A scrawny body, an empathetic disposition, and a strong distaste for the social order in spite of benefiting from it as a physically superior apex predator are all aspects of his character that alienate him from his peers. On the other side of the spectrum, there’s Louis: a deer with impeccable grades who stands against our canine protagonist. While other carnivores in the story tend to stay in the camp of archetypical bullies, rejecting Legosi for not fitting into the alpha Chad expectations thrust upon him since birth, Louis represents a much more complex form of antagonism. Despite being a herbivore, Louis detests carnivores like Legosi who neglect what he perceives as their superiority. He's one of the few herbivores to act assertively around carnivores, but his self-defeating attitude towards them shows he has lots of issues to be explored, adding a deeper layer of intrigue to the character and the plot. Legosi too is far from a simple character, since he initially comes off as little more than a timid good guy, but the story is not afraid to challenge this perception, showing dark things behind Legosi’s unthreatening demeanor early on and only goes deeper over time.

Tooth and Nail

If it’s not already obvious, Beastars’ narrative is an exploration of identity, focusing on individualities clashing in a society that assigns them roles incongruent with their needs. Legosi’s suppression of parts of him he deems negative and Louis’ antagonism towards those who could assert themselves as members of a class superior to his but choose not to give a holistic look at the extremes such a system brings out in people. Plus, when you remember that Japanese who do not live up to the highest standards of expectations placed on them are commonly referred to as herbivores, the importance these ideas hold to modern society become perfectly clear.

Final Thoughts

With gender identity becoming an increasingly contentious topic, parallels in Beastars are easily read, and what it does with those parallels is captivating. The complexities in the characters of Legosi and Louis we covered here bring a nuanced exploration of masculinity, but there's also so much more we sadly can't discuss without spoilers. The same goes for the series' musings on femininity, mostly conducted through the less-prominent but just as fascinating rabbit character Haru. We hope our look at BEASTARS' allegorical aspects has been enough to convince you to add it to your Netflix list and maybe even watch it too.

Kankaku ga Tsunagaru Mahou no Onaho is a manga about mind-break and public humiliation. When the perverted owner of a coffee shop is given a magical onahole, his wildest dreams come true. He simply has to pluck a hair to link the toy to a woman's body. Lucky for him, the woman he’s been pining over for months comes into his shop. He gets right to work, linking her body to the onahole and begins to break her down. The first scene has the girl, Nozomi, getting teased in the coffee shop. The protagonist starts off by rubbing the toy on her nipples to see how well she responds. She starts to stir in her seat from pleasure while trying to hold her voice in. To break her down further, he moves to the entrance of the onahole and begins tracing his finger around it. He watches as she holds back in moans before sticking his finger in the toy to tackle her G-spot. Before long, he tries out the toy on his dick and has her cumming in public. In a later scene, they go into a manga cafe after Nozomi cums in the middle of the street. In there, she’s made to cum five times in a row before the cafe owner enters the room. He starts off by playing with her nipples and then tests out her pussy with his actual dick. After she comes once, he decides to spice things up by using his fingers in the toy while his dick is pounding away at her pussy.

Girl Fight has a pretty straightforward premise; Izumi is an MMA fighter who only competes against men. She has been undefeated in the ring until today when she finally meets her match. The manga covers the three rounds of her first defeat in the MMA ring at the hands of a perverted fighter. Izumi gets in the ring with an amateur and quickly widdles him down. To finish him off, she gets into a mounting position. To her surprise, though, he grabs her tits and begins to play with them in the ring. Before long, he’s kissing her stomach and moving his hand on down to give her pussy a little rub. Completely taken by the sensation and being teased in a crowded room, Izumi loses the first round. Later after she goes in the third match and an aphrodisiac has been absorbed into her body, things get even worse. Her competitor exposes her bare breasts to the crowd and begins fingering her pussy for all to see. After getting her a bit wet, he pulls her panties off for everyone to see. Humiliated Izumi soon finds herself in a face-down position and her competitor's cock being thrust into her exposed hole. She is pounded in front of an audience and loses her first-ever match.

A janitor gets his dream job at a school full of idols and fashion models. To sweeten the deal, he has a smartphone that can control any girl he snaps a picture of just by the sound of his voice. When the voice commands don’t get them going, he simply pulls up their picture and taps the parts they need pleasured the most. The janitor's first point of business is to punish a stuck-up woman named Azusa. After ripping up a love letter in front of him, he snaps a picture and tells the phone she needs to be turned on by the touch of her clothes. She starts getting excited, so the janitor pulls up her picture and starts tapping on her pussy. She soon falls to the ground, and he rushes over to play with her boobs and makes it so he can pick her up and carry her back to his office. This is, of course, while he fiddles with her wet vagina on the way. Later on, the manga has a lesbian scene with two athletic women. One of them is a lesbian, and the janitor lends a helping hand by making her love interest become extra senstive to the touch. Before long, the Momota is rubbing Aoi’s bare nipples. Before long, Momota starts toying with her pussy and removers her swimsuit plunging her fingers deep inside. After getting her to cum, she moves on to taste Aoi’s vagina.

Chikan is an interesting set of manga about a girl who has to work for a whole year straight to repay her father's debt. As luck has it, the train she has to take to get to her workplace is a two-hour ride. From the first day onward, she is toyed with by a group of men who slowly train her body to cum quicker and quicker. This is a bit of a different read as it gets more and more erotic as you dive deeper. At the very start of the book, the men-only tease her breasts on the train. Then they move onto her nipples and have her cumming from just a bit of tit play. After a few weeks, they move on to her thighs and pussy, even making her cum ten times on her two-hour commute. After training her pussy with their fingers, they slowly start toying with her ass. They soon let her know that it’s the day of the festival, where she will be toyed with for an audience on the train. During the festival, her legs are spread for all to see, and the men get to work toying with her pussy. After bringing her to cum, one of the men pulls out his dick and stuffs it into her mouth. She is taught to properly suck on it while another man continues plunging his fingers deep inside of her. By the end of it all, the group decides to cum all over her upper half.

Suzumin is an undercover detective who rides the trains of Japan. Using a decoy she lures train molesters into a trap and then arrests them when they make a move. Her plan is going great until she meets a man who has a special way of playing with her body. Overcome by pleasure, Suzumin is left helpless to the man’s sensual touch. Suzumin meets her match when a young man she assumes is bad at pleasing women, handcuffs her on a moving train. He then begins to rub her soft ass before feeling up her thighs. Soon enough, his fingers come to rest on her usually unfazed pussy. Realizing his touch his doing nothing to her, the man kisses Suzumin making her mental concentration break. Soon enough, he starts teasing her nipples before moving on to her crotch. He eventually exposes her breast for sucking and places his hand inside of her panties, forcing her to cum. On her next train ride, she gets double teamed by a couple of men who go right for her pussy. Together they start to finger her and play with her tits at the same time. As they plunge deeper inside of her Suzumin breaks letting out a loud moan and dropping to the ground for the other train passengers to see. Before long, the men even start to find her in places like the movie theater, where they spread her legs for toy insertion.

Nagumo is a young woman who does professional bikini modeling. Today she is going for a massage on live TV that focuses on popular spots around town. As it happens, though, she has to wear one of her bikinis, and the old man massaging her is really good at his technique. Once Nagumo is in the massage parlor, she notices the man's hands are staying around her breasts. He even makes her sit up and part her legs for the cameras to see. Soon enough, he slips his fingers in her bikini to play with her nipples off camera. She is then flipped over on her stomach, where he can play with her ass. When the camera moves up, he even makes sure to play with her pussy for a bit before going back to the massage. Before long, the camera focuses on her neck, leaving her pussy open for an assault. He even got the crew to stare at her back as he oiled up her tits while playing with her clit. Nagumo does a great job of resisting until the old man pulls out a massager. Exhausted, the cameramen leave the room, and the old man finishes off by ramming his dick inside of her now soaked pussy. He makes sure to tie her hand behind her back before moving through different positions until he cums.

Kaguya is a young woman who fights beasts. Today she is taking on a request from an old man who owns a cursed mansion. He explains that three maids have been broken by something in the basement. He leads her downstairs and opens a door revealing a beast that immediately takes an interest in Kaguya's body. Once in the room, the beasts wrap around Kagura while massaging her nipples. They let Kaguya know that their only desire is to make her a slave to pleasure. They hold her arms up and slide tentacles underneath her shirt. Before long, they reveal her bare breasts and put a sucker on top of her nipples. They focus on rotating between a massaging motion, sucking her nipples themselves, and licking her breasts to make her lose her will to fight. Once she has successfully been pleasured up top, they remove her shorts to reveal her panties. After she refuses to cum, the beast picks up her game and begins teasing her exposed pussy. They start by gently rubbing it before using their tongues to get a proper taste. A few more beasts join in to kiss her and play with her nipples. Lost in ecstasy, she is lifted up and lowered on top of a sizeable penis. Once the beasts disk is inside, her multiple tentacles are used to caress the rest of her body into an orgasm.

The events of Fate: Zero gave us some memorable servants, some epic battles and a truly unexpected friendship, the friendship of Waver Velvet and the warrior Iskandar. Iskandar became the young Waver’s mentor and the young mage considered himself a loyal subject of the King of Conquerors. The end of the grail war meant all the servants returned to the aether but it didn’t mean they would be forgotten. Waver survived the Fourth Holy Grail War, then leveraged all he had to become Lord El Melloi II and a teacher at the Clock Tower school for mages. Waver, despite his rank of lord, is technically outranked by Reines, the younger sister of the previous Lord El-Melloi. Reines often tasks him with solving problems that come up in the world of the Clock Tower mages. Waver's excellent deductive reasoning gives him a reputation as a detective with a set of skills perfect for solving the many mysteries that often arise in the world of magecraft.

10. Flatt Escardos

https://twitter.com/elmelloi_anime/status/1152510960613109761?s=20
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]

Like many mages in the Fate series, Flatt has a connection with a holy grail war. The holy grail war sees Flatt as the master of Berserker. He enters the Clock Tower as a student but isn’t deemed fit to be a mage by many of the professors because he doesn’t have the temperament of most mages. He eventually finds a teacher who will take him under his wing in Waver. Flatt gradually comes to be a great mage, with one problem: his personality. He has a whimsical nature which is considered incompatible with being a mage no matter how talented he is, so he is continually denied graduation by the Clock Tower leaving him as a 20-year-old student in Waver’s class. Flatt’s role, aside from being a pain in Waver’s butt at times, is to be the reliable student that will do whatever weird errand his teacher asks of him.

9. Svin Glascheit

https://twitter.com/elmelloi_anime/status/1152592749864071168?s=20
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]

Svin is another student in Waver's class. He is best friends with Flatt. According to most people, Svin is a calm, intelligent boy, albeit a bit immature. He gets jealous of others where Gray, who we will mention later, is concerned. The young mage utilizes Beast Magecraft which allows him to take on the characteristics of animals. Svin also seems to have a keen sense of smell and can often tell when Waver and especially Gray are nearby. We often see Svin accompany Flatt on side missions for their teacher as Waver works on a case.

8. Caules Forvedge Yggdmillennia

https://twitter.com/elmelloi_anime/status/1175379149050900481?s=20
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]

You may remember Caules from Fate/Apocrypha. The character shares many of the same characteristics and history as the Caules in Apocrypha but it appears that in this timeline he did not take part in a holy grail war. Caules isn’t a very powerful mage but has taken up the mantle of mage because his sister gave up the right. He joins Waver’s class of misfits where his talents are nurtured in a more natural direction than they were by the other teachers. Caules’ aristocratic upbringing gives him a bit more maturity than his other classmates. Like the other members of his class, he finds that more often than not he’s required to take part in some of the extra credit that his teacher’s younger sister assigns.

7. Olga-Marie Arsimilat Animusphere

https://twitter.com/elmelloi_anime/status/1167799199896702977?s=20
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]

You may remember Olga-Marie from Fate/Grand Order. She has a similar appearance and attitude in this version of the Fate Universe, too. We are introduced to her in the Rail Zeppelin/Mystic Eyes Auction arc of the Melloi series. She boards the mystical train with her aid Trisha Fellows to participate in the Mystic Eyes auction. Her goal is to obtain the “Rainbow” mystic eyes. The story becomes a version of Agatha Christie’s Murder at the Orient Express with Lord El-Melloi II starring as inspector Hercule Poirot. We are a bit surprised, however, that Olga-Marie is officially 11 years old at the time of the auction despite looking much, much older. She plays like an antagonist and reluctant ally of Waver in the unraveling of the mystery. We would love to see a bit more of Olga-Marie.

6. Luviagelita Edelfelt

https://twitter.com/elmelloi_anime/status/1160189058993123328?s=20
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]

We were introduced to the refined young lady known as Luviagelita Edefelt in Fate/Hollow Ataraxia. She also made an appearance in the Fate series Fate/Kaleid Prisma Illya. Now she shows up in Lord El-Melloi as one of the students in Waver's class. She always conducts herself as a lady who has no trouble flaunting her wealth. She is one of the few students that doesn’t show Waver complete respect. Luvia’s opinion of Waver is that he is “the worst kind of person.” She eventually warms up to her teacher and even helps him in the final arc of the story by teaming up with Kairi Shishigou, a necromancer, to unravel the mystery presented to them.

5. Kairi Shishigou

https://twitter.com/elmelloi_anime/status/1155047676066574338?s=20
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]

Kairi has always been a favorite for Fate fans because of his cool and tough-guy demeanor. He always comes off as a badass, wearing a leather jacket and toting a shotgun with mystically engraved ammunition. The necromancer can raise and employ spirits, a skill that comes in handy when solving a murder. He appears in the Marbury Workshop arc of the series. We first encounter him in the catacombs under the Marbury Mansion as he is conducting an investigation in parallel to Waver’s. He makes a second appearance near the end of the series when he is tasked by Reines to work with Luvia to find out who had stolen Iskander’s mantel from Waver. We aren’t sure what it was about the rich girl and tough guy chemistry the two had but we’d actually like to see more of it.

4. Melvin Weins

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="Twitter" url="https://twitter.com/elmelloi_anime/status/1144991643998642176?s=20" ]

Weins is an old friend of Waver’s and is the only one to call him Waver now that he is a lord. He has known Waver for years and faced more than one life-or-death situation with him. The main thing we know about Melvin is that he is rich, extremely rich, and is willing to use his resources to help Waver. The willingness to help Waver doesn’t come from a completely altruistic place, either. He always asks if whatever he’s asked to do is entertaining. He is a rather lanky and sickly man who often coughs up blood. He isn’t exactly the person you want in combat. But you would want his help before you take the field. His ability to tune magic crests by playing the violin gives you a power boost.

3. Reines El-Melloi Archisorte

https://twitter.com/elmelloi_anime/status/1156041148999147520?s=20
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]

Waver bought his title of lord. A key part of that agreement was for him to turn over the title to his now adoptive younger sister Reines when she comes of age. As the head of the El-Melloi family, she was the one who leased him the title. She was also the one who came up with the terms that he takes on the extra jobs that are the basis for the series. She also has a bit of a twisted personality. She revels in watching an upstanding, honest person fall from grace. She is a mage as well and sometimes shows up in her brother’s class. She also possesses Mystic Eyes that turn red upon contact with magical energy. Reines plays a very interesting role in the story, straddling the role of antagonist for Waver and at times playing the caring sister. She is also the catalyst for a lot of the events in the story.

2. Waver Velvet (Lord El-Melloi II)

https://twitter.com/elmelloi_anime/status/1148426548128747522?s=20
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]

We first met Waver Velvet as a scrawny 18-year-old mage who was taking part in a holy grail war in Japan. Waver enters the war with the hope of gaining acknowledgment form his peers and the Clock Tower despite coming from lesser nobility. The experience of the grail war changed him and his outlook. He summoned Iskandar (Alexander the Great) as a servant but Iskandar became a mentor and helped him determine how he should live as a man. Iskandar’s influence on Waver was so great, Waver pledged his loyalty to him and wants nothing more than to be counted as one of Iskandar’s subjects. The grail war ends and Iskandar disappears into the aether leaving Waver with a hole in his heart and a yearning to be a worthy subject of the King of Conquerors. He eventually returns to the Clock Tower with a new goal to gain the standing and resources to participate in the next holy grail war if only to summon Iskandar again and show him what he has accomplished with his life. Waver, with his purchased title and impressive deductive intellect, gains a position as a teacher at the mages school and takes on all the misfits and troublesome students the more esteemed members of the faculty don’t want. The general role of Waver Velvet in this series is a lot like a Sherlock Homes whose investigative prowess can unravel the most difficult of mysteries in the secretive world of mages.

1. Gray

https://twitter.com/elmelloi_anime/status/1167813039774715904?s=20
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]

Gray is a mysterious hooded girl who serves as Waver’s apprentice and ward. She is also the result of genetic manipulation by her clan, which hoped that she would be the vessel for the soul of King Arthur. The result of this genetic tampering is that despite being human she can generate a Noble Phantasm (a powerful attack) called “The Holy Lance of King Arthur.” She also possesses a unique mystic code, a powerful sentient artifact, that transforms her into a grim reaper. Gray despite her impressive abilities is also a quiet girl who is very unsure of where she fits in life considering she was simply to be a vessel for her ancestors' spirit. The chance she has to experience life as a student at the Clock Tower has slowly begun to change her sense of self-worth. The girl with the face of King Arthur is the most prominent character in the series but we learn so little about her life. Gray is a mystery for many of us and that is what makes her intriguing. She is also the most powerful character of the series as she plays the role of Waver’s student and servant.

Closing Paragraph

Lord El-Melloi II Case Files - Rail Zeppelin Grace note is a bit unique as far as Fate series go. It is a slow-moving show with an interesting Sherlock-like protagonist. We like knowing that the story of Waver is continuing and that he has found life after the events of the Holy Grail War. We also can’t help but smile at the devotion he still has to Iskander. The chance to unravel some of the mysteries of the Clock Tower and the mage's association is also a welcome opportunity to explore the Fate universe.
