Hachimaru has for once spoken some wisdom! Kotsuga was humbled by our new samurai and despite some insults thrown at our cat samurai, Hachimaru truly showed his appreciation for being under Daruma’s teaching. The chapter truly began though with our giant samurai facing down our master cat. Armed with four styles—as evidenced by his several weapons—this giant samurai seems to be a true challenge for Daruma. However, Daruma isn’t worried about the challenge. Instead, our little master was angered by the giant’s use of several samurai cores and pretending like he’s mastered them. Unfazed by this comment, Ben shows Daruma his last major power…a giant ship! Hachimaru worries for his master as he hasn’t slept in some time meaning his power will soon run out! Luckily, Daruma has one final trick up his sleeve given to him by an unknown ally. Given a small bit of this stranger’s samurai soul, Daruma is able to awaken and we finally see Daruma’s original form reappear! Charged and ready to go, Ben versus Daruma will begin! We can’t wait for this epic fight but until chapter 28, let’s talk more about Samurai 8: Hachimaru Den 27!

Why You Should Read Samurai 8: Hachimaru Den (Samurai 8: The Tale of Hachimaru) Chapter 27

1. Ben’s Transformation

Ben was already a humongous giant samurai but now with his form truly unleashing he’s gotten even larger! Now with several weapons, Ben is truly a force to be reckoned with.

2. The Return of Daruma’s Form!

Samurai 8: Hachimaru Den 27 ended with a truly awesome panel showing Daruma unleashing his original form! We can even see Daruma is pumped with him saying he feels like he’s woken up! We will finally get to see Daruma unleash some truly amazing samurai skills and that has us praying for chapter 28 to release soon!

Final Thoughts

Samurai 8: Hachimaru Den 27 had our main boy win against Kotsuga but a separate battle is brewing between Ben and Daruma. Ben seemed to have an upper hand against the tired Daruma but from an unknown ally, Daruma has returned to his original form and now is ready to beat down Ben! Most likely Daruma will need to race against the clock as this form has a time limit but we’re sure his power will destroy Ben! What do you think will happen next in Samurai 8: Hachimaru Den? Comment your thoughts below to let us know! For more Samurai 8: Hachimaru Den chapter reviews keep stuck to our hive here at Honey’s Anime! Daruma, you better kick Ben’s behind and show what it really means to be an honorable samurai!

Boku no Hero Academia chapter 250 gave us a bit of backstory not known to us about a third child of Endeavor, Toya. Apparently, Toya and Natsu were very close as kids but an incident occurred leading to Toya’s death and Natsu—Shoto’s older brother—seemed to blame Endeavor. While we are learning of this revelation, Natsu seems to be heading home but an unknown assailant watches him from a light post in the distance. As our heroes leave, Endeavor shares with them his plans for the kids and they end up having their discussion cut short by a mysterious man in the middle of the road. Remember that guy watching Natsu? Well we learn he’s been stalking Endeavor for a bit now—calling himself Ending—and has Natsu in his clutches. What’s worse, Ending makes a claim he’s going to kill Natsu and wants Endeavor to grant him something he didn’t when they first met seven years ago…death. Endeavor needs to figure out how to save his son but I’m sure the others won’t leave him alone to do this! Who will make the first moves though? We’re sure to find out in chapter 251 but for now let’s explore the reasons you need to reach chapter 250 of Boku no Hero Academia!

Why You Should Read Boku no Hero Academia (My Hero Academia) Chapter 250
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="viz" url="https://www.viz.com/read/manga/my-hero-academia-volume-21/product/6057" ]

1. Toya...

There we have it folks, we’ve learned that Endeavor did indeed have a third son—Toya—and Natsu blames his fiery dad for his death. How did Toya really die though and was it Endeavor’s fault? That much we don’t know yet so Toya’s story still has some holes we hope are filled soon!

2. Pains From Seven Years Ago

Poor Natsu has been kidnapped and it seems this threat wasn’t someone random! Called Ending, he met Endeavor seven years ago and apparently the two duked it out. However, Ending seems to desire death and is now praying after he kills Natsu that Endeavor will grant him his final wish…Endeavor you better move fast otherwise your second son will perish!

Final Thoughts

Boku no Hero Academia chapter 250 was quite exciting this week! We have a new villain and Endeavor’s son has become a target by said villain! This all seems to stem from several years ago so chapter 251 will probably explain the past a bit more while our heroes attempt to save Natsu and take down Ending. What do you think happened seven years ago and does it connect with Toya’s demise? Let us know in the comments below! As always, be sure to keep stuck to our amazing hive here at Honey’s Anime for even more Boku no Hero Academia chapter reviews!

After getting caught shoplifting, Kakeru Kurahara uses his skills as the former ace of his high school's track and field club to get away. Despite getting away from the store employees, Kakeru runs into a student from his university named Haiji Kiyose. Haji is impressed by Kakeru's speed and asks him if he would be interested in moving into his apartment building. With no money for his rent, Kakeru accepts the offer. However, when all of the tenants throw Kakery a welcome party, he learns that the apartment is actually the dormitory for the university's track and field club. Even though most of the boys are novices, Haiji dreams of turning them into skilled athletes and competing in the Hakone Ekiden. With nowhere else to go, Kakeru has no choice but to help train the other members of the Chikusei-sou and help Haiji achieve his dream.  Kaze ga Tsuyoku Fuiteiru and Hoshiai no Sora are centered around a group of boys who work together in order to win in their respective sports. Maki and Kakeru both play similar roles in their stories giving both anime similar stories and themes. Both boys are tasked with using their natural-born talent to help improve the skill of their teammate, and while they are hesitant to join at first, they quickly adapt to their role and put all their effort into improving their team. Kaze ga Tsuyoku Fuiteiru and Hoshiai no Sora also have a similar balance between the sports aspects of the story with the more dramatic character development parts of the story.

Ayano Hanesaki spent her youth training under her mother to become a great badminton player. Now in high school, Ayano decides to leave the world of badminton for good. Ayano's best friend Erena Fujisawa takes notice of how unhappy she has become and pushes her to join the badminton team. With Erena pushing her, Ayano reluctantly agrees to check it out. While checking out the club, Ayano learns that the captain of the club is Nagisa Aragaki, a girl she had beaten while she was in middle school. Despite the tension between the two of them, Ayano decides to join the club. With the support of Erena and her teammates, Ayano takes her first steps back into the world of badminton. What makes Hanebado! and Hoshiai no Sora so similar are the main characters. Ayano and Maki both have troubled pasts involving their parents that have caused them to hide their true feelings from others and become withdrawn. Throughout both series, we get to see Ayano and Maki deal with their pasts and how they use sports to help them cope with their situation. Even though Hanebado! doesn't reach the same dramatic levels as Hoshiai no Sora, there are enough moments for you to enjoy if that was your favorite part of Hoshiai no Sora.

Tsukushi Tsukamoto is a shy and clumsy boy who has been bullied his entire life. One of Tsukushi's classmates, Jin Kazama, takes an interest in him and invites him to participate in an indoor soccer match. Even though he wasn't very good, Tsukushi had a lot of fun playing with Jin and he decides to join the school's soccer club. Surrounded by so many talented players, Tsukushi feels out of place due to his lack of skill, but with some hard work and determination, Tsukushi hopes to one day be able to compete alongside Jin and the rest of his teammates.  Days is a bit different from all of the other anime we have looked at so far. There isn't much drama in Days, and it mostly focuses on the Seiseki High School soccer team and Tsukushi's efforts to improve. What makes the two anime similar is the way they handle the teams and the realistic way in which they approach the characters and their feelings towards the sport. Both anime do a great job at showing the characters and how they react to both losing and to meeting players who are so much more talented than they are. Instead of having a serious breakdown when things don't go their way, the characters accept their inadequacies and strive to work harder in order to improve themselves. This makes the actual sports moments in both series more enjoyable and relatable.

Takumi Harada has dedicated his life to a game of baseball and his considered one of the best young pitchers in the country. When his family moves to the small town of Nitta, Takumi finds himself on a team filled with a bunch of unskilled players. Takumi relishes in the opportunity to turn the team into a powerhouse. Despite his grand ambitions, Takumi learns things won't be as easy as he thought when his personality clashes with all of his teammates. With the help of his pitcher Gou Nagakura and his grandfather, Takumi starts to see a side to the game of baseball he had forgotten all about. Battery and Hoshiai no Sora both center around a character whose natural talents cause problems for their fellow team members. While both series handle this in different ways, it gives them a similar vibe and setup. There is also a good amount of drama in both series surrounding the boys and their growth as both athletes and people. As both series progress, Maki and Takumi both start to develop a newfound appreciation for not only sports but also for the people around them.

With the words of the mysterious man fresh in his mind, Minato joins his friends in the kyudo club. Now with his rekindled love for archery, Minato picks up the bow once again as him and his friends try to reach the prefectural tournament. Tsurune: Kazemai Koukou Kyuudoubu and Hoshiai no Sora don't share much when it comes to their stories and themes, but what makes them similar is the way they approach their respective stories. There is a large focus on the characters and their personal struggles with a lot of the characters in both series have their own issues they have to deal with. Both series handle their issues well and the characters feel like they react in normal and realistic ways. It is exciting to watch the characters deal with their issues and you can't help but root for them as they try to overcome all the obstacles in their way.

After a few more chance encounters, Kotaro and Akane start growing closer and they begin dating. Together, the two of them learn what it means to actually be in a relationship and they experience the ups and downs that come from being in love. While Tsuki ga Kirei may not be a sports anime like all of the other shows on his list, it still has a lot in common with Hoshiai no Sora. Both anime focus on a group of middle schoolers who must deal with the struggles of growing up as they face the drama in their everyday lives. Tsuki ga Kirei focuses more on relationships and Kotarous's personal growth, but it still gives off similar vibes to Hoshiai no Sora. On top of that, both any also have some very similar visuals and story themes.

Please forgive our punny title! Today we’re talking bread, known as pan in Japan, another great example of cultural synthesis, or taking a foreign concept and reinventing it into uniquely Japanese forms now famous in their own right. Bread in Japan is serious business and seriously fun all across the country. Join us in exploring the history of Japanese bread, its effect and variety in modern culture, and some choice examples of bread-focused anime. No loafing! Prep your oven, let’s get baking!

Bread’s Introduction to Japan

Bread first came to Japan, along with firearms, in the 16th century through the Portuguese after one of their ships drifted ashore in Tanegashima, an island in the south of Japan below Kyushu. This origin is seen in the word pan itself which is derived from the Portuguese word. However, for hundreds of years, bread was exclusively consumed by foreign traders and missionaries in Japan until the 19th century when China’s defeat by the British Empire in the Opium Wars prompted the Japanese government to investigate ways to strengthen their military. Military scholar Egawa Tarozaemon called for more Westernization of their forces and using bread as a ration was part of that since it kept longer and could be mass-produced beforehand. Later on in the late 19th century as Japan went full throttle into Westernization, bread entered the mainstream in 1874 largely thanks to Yasubei Kimura, a former samurai who created the now-ubiquitous anpan,—a sweet roll full of sweet adzuki (red bean) paste—with his son using techniques they learned from a man who had worked as a chef for foreign residents in Nagasaki. The anpan proved to be a huge success thanks to being similar to familiar Japanes confections but with a unique texture, shape, and flavor. After anpan were presented to, and loved by, the Meiji Emperor, bread became even more popular and spread across the country where enterprising bakers started to create some of the many varieties enjoyed today. Bread was also given a major push after World War II from the Americans who sent huge amounts of wheat as part of their relief efforts to combat the post-war food shortages which put bread into school lunches and cemented it as a major staple.

Modern Bread Culture in Japan

Today, bread products actually account for more sales than rice and Japan is said to have the most variety of breads available in any country in the world. While classics like anpan remain popular, many types of Japanese-original breads have been developed such as melonpan, a sweet, vaguely melon-shaped bread with a crunchy exterior and soft inside; crispy, deep-fried currypan which is almost like a donut filled with Japanese curry; and many types of unique sandwiches like yakisobapan which is fried soba noodles with a special oyster sauce placed within a hotdog bun-like roll. Seemingly endless varieties and mixtures exist and many bakeries combine other local delicacies with bread to create special regional dishes to help drive business and tourism. Even basic white bread is a bit different in Japan with its pronounced softness and springy texture and wide slices cut much thicker than what is typical in places like America. Japan is also famous for helping to make home bread production more accessible with bread machines which were first invented in 1986 by Ikuko Tanaka and a team of engineers at Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. (now known as Panasonic). Modern bread machines are highly advanced and specialized, able to do things like make bread using rice instead of wheat and have become popular throughout the world.

Bread in Anime & Manga

As everyday items in Japan, bread has made appearances in many anime and manga series such as Lucky Star’s famous discussion of where the head lies on Choco Cornets and whether they resemble a seashell or caterpillar and the trope-y scene of the protagonist dashing off to school in the morning with a comically thick slice of bread between their teeth. Beyond that, we have series like Yakitate!! Japan (whose title is a pun similar to this articles’ title meaning ‘fresh-baked Ja-pan’) where bread is the main focus of the series. In this case, the story follows a young boy named Kazuma Azuma who is striving to make something worthy to be called Japan’s national bread (Ja-pan) which is helped by his extraordinary warm hands which allows his dough to ferment faster. Another series worth mentioning is Pan de Peace!, a slice of life (slice of bread?) 4-koma manga and short anime series following Minami Tani and her friends who are all obsessed with different types of bread. We’d be remiss to not also mention the extraordinary popular children’s series Anpanman which stars the titular superhero who has an anpan for a head as he fights against the bacteria-themed villain Baikinman and others. Anpanman is often assisted by fellow bread-themed heroes like the toast-faced Shokupanman and spicy Currypanman and continues to be beloved by children, spawning tons of merchandise, spinoffs, and even theme parks. Anpanman is also related to the origin of One-Punch Man, a play on words using the Japanese pronunciation of ‘Wanpanman’.

Altogether, Japan’s relationship with bread has been an interesting one that has made a big impact on the food item worldwide and is even a focal point in popular media. We encourage our readers to do their own research into Japanese bread and to definitely try out regional types like the delicious oyster curry bread on Miyajima Island if you get the chance! There’s a trend of anime featuring stories of girls participating in various kinds of sports. There’s an upcoming anime about two girls playing baseball, one about girls in rifle shooting competitions, and there’s even an anime about girls playing volleyball. Kandagawa Jet Girls continues this trend with competitive jet racing—a combination of jet ski racing and shooting using water guns. But Kandagawa Jet Girls is more than just jet racing because it has fanservice and, well, just fanservice. Yeah, Kandagawa Jet Girls doesn’t offer much outside jet racing, but if you like its unique competitive aquatic sport or the general tone of its fanservice, and want to see more, here are 6 Anime Like Kandagawa Jet Girls!

Tokomome Mamori gets transported to a mysterious island and the people who sent her to the island obviously didn’t care about her well-being because she was sent via torpedo. The island’s inhabitants, all women, are infected with the Armed Virus, which grants them superhuman abilities, and Mamori is sent to the island because she is also a carrier. The virus transforms the hosts into powerful weapons called Liberator Arms and only the Exters can wield them. In order to draw out their power, the Exter must sexually stimulate their partner to become Liberator Arms, and the power output of the Liberator Arms depends on how strong their bonds are. Mamori and her Exter Mirei team up and work together so they can survive against the elements and other people who are infected with the Armed Virus. In terms of setting, story and the general tone of the atmosphere, Valkyrie Drive: Mermaid is very different from Kandagawa Jet Girls. One show is about girls stranded on an island whose bodies can transform into weapons through sexual arousal and the other is just the jet ski competitive sport played exclusively by women. But both shows have a heavy focus on girl-girl camaraderie—pairs of girls working together, making use of each of their abilities to succeed. In Valkyrie Drive: Mermaid, Mamori is a powerful Liberator Arm, but she can’t do anything and is practically useless without her Exter, Mirei, who can draw out her true potential. The same thing can be said about Mirei, an athletic and experienced combatant, but she can’t win battles on her own without Mamori, her Liberator Arm. Rin in Kandagawa Jet Girls wants to follow her mother’s footsteps, but she can’t do it alone as a jetter and needs Aoi’s experience as a shooter. Shooting targets looks easy but Aoi’s targets are constantly moving along the unpredictable waves of the Kandagawa River and it’s even more difficult to hit her mark when their opponents have a very skilled jetter. Aoi must work together with Rin to keep up and position themselves for that important shot. No official trailer available.

The story of Two Car follows two high school girls, Miyata Yuri and Meguro Megumi, who are competing in an interschool motorcycle sidecar tournament against rival schools for fame, glory, and love. Yuri and Megumi’s beloved coach Tanahasi has gone to the Isle of Man to compete in the biggest sidecar sports event in the world and the two must compete in races and rise up to the ranks, so they too can go to the Isle of Man and confess their feelings to their coach. Are the girls doing it for the love of the sport or out of love? Two Car and Kandagawa Jet Girls are all about the two-man (uh… “two-girl”?) competition. Both shows center on a sport requiring a team of two girls and both shows have a cast of rival teams from other schools with varying quirks and very distinctive personalities. Aoi and Rin compete against other teams in Kandagawa Jet Girls with exaggerated stereotypes like a team of weeaboos, gyarus, idols, rich girls, and shrine maidens. The variety of characters makes for an enjoyable experience, a reason to continue following the show, and you’re likely to root for one or two of them based on their personalities alone. The teams of Two Car are more grounded but are also an interesting bunch with different quirks and personalities from a team composed of a sadist and a masochist, a team composed of identical twins, and a team of goth lolis just to name a few.

In modern-day Japan, several schools continue the tradition of teaching new shinobi to fight against evil and keep the balance of power in check. Senran Kagura tells the story of Asuka and her friends who are honing their shinobi skills in secret and battle against rival shinobi from across Japan. We know what you’re thinking—”Kandagawa Jet Girls and Senran Kagura are nothing alike!” and you’d be right. However, both shows came from the same creator Takaki Kenichiro, so if you liked the unique world-building, the setting, the sometimes-yuri humor, and characters of Senran Kagura, then you might want to check out Kandagawa Jet Girls for it too has a unique world-building, setting, yuri humor and characters. Probably. The game isn’t out yet and the franchise is still young. If there’s anything similar between the two shows, it’s probably the gratuitous amount of fanservice—the majority of the female cast is very well endowed and both anime made sure you notice them through odd camera angles. Kandagawa Jet Girls is not getting as much love as Senran Kagura, but that’s to be expected from a show that’s based on a game that’s still in development and with no established fanbase. But, who knows, if given time and more room to improve, Takaki Kenichiro will create a video game series with an interesting setting and interesting characters, while adding his own take on ecchi fanservice. In Takaki Kenichiro’s immortal words: “Everybody loves boobs… It’s a universal language!”

4. Seikon no Qwaser (The Qwaser of Stigmata)

Oribe Mafuyu and Yamanobe Tomo rescue a wounded Russian boy, Alexander Nikolaevith Hell. Little do they know, Alexander is a Qwaser, a superhuman being who is locked in a constant struggle fighting against the evil forces. A Qwaser is a being who has the ability to manipulate the elements and transform them into spells and weapons. In order to manipulate the elements down to the atomic level, a Qwaser must harness energy through the consumption of literal breast milk. Seikon no Qwaser is an anime that tries to take itself seriously but falls flat because, well, come on, it’s a show about a Russian shota sucking breast milk to gain magical alchemical powers. So how is Seikon no Qwaser similar to Kandagawa Jet Girls? Nothing much on the surface level. Both shows, however, were directed by Kaneko Hiraku, the madman responsible for directing ecchi anime such as Valkyrie Drive: Mermaid, the recent Nande Koko ni Sensei ga!? anime, and created Queen’s Blade Cattleya, whose boobs are so large, you need a 27th letter in the alphabet to categorize her cup size. Director Kaneko Hiraku has a decent track record for yuri fanservice and we’re still optimistic that Kandagawa Jet Girls will get more fanservice other than the typical boob shots and the odd camera angles aiming for the girls’ crotch areas. And don’t worry, Seikon no Qwaser has its fair share of yuri fanservice from the popular sadomasochistic duo Ekaterina and Hana.

Kaminashi Nozomi and her best friend Miyata Sayaka enroll in Setouchi Keijo Training School to become athletes and compete in Japan’s biggest female-only sport, Keijo. The rules of Keijo are simple—all participants must stand on a platform with the goal of knocking their opponents into the water using only their boobs and butts. The platforms range from a simple circular ring to complex structures providing tactical opportunities and choke points to knock down the combatants out of the game. Fame, fortune, rivalries, teamwork, lots of beautiful ladies and nonstop action—Keijo has it all! Keijo!!!!!!!! is the direct comparison to Kandagawa Girls, but it’s different enough to be an entirely new experience. Both shows feature a unique inter-school competitive sport exclusive to women, a cast of quirky and often-stereotypical female characters, yuri fanservice (one character in Keijo!!!!!!!! is openly lesbian), similar character motivations and tons of boobs and butt fanservice. Matches in Kandagawa Jet Girls revolve around an aquatic course with some obstacles and the goal for each team of two is to race around in laps using specialized jet skis. The jetter controls the jet ski to maneuver across the trace, dodging obstacles and water gun attacks from the opposing team. The jetter’s partner, the shooter, uses her water gun to deal damage. In Keijo, the matches are similar to king of the hill matches where combatants uses their chests and butts to knock off their opponents off the platform and into the water. The participants are experienced martial artists and gymnasts and employ unique moves to suit their roles in the arena. And the best part about Keijo!!!!!!!! Is that it’s very fun. If you felt jaded watching Kandagawa Jet Girls, then try out Keijo!!!!!!!!—It’s 10x the fun and 10x the fanservice.

Oozora Haruka moves in with her cousin Higa Kanata and her grandmother on the white sand beaches of Okinawa. The excited Haruka immediately goes to the beach to have some fun, but on her way to the beach, she encounters two girls playing beach volleyball and gets invited to try it out. Surprisingly, Haruka is a natural thanks to her exceptionally tall frame and decent striking power. Haruka then discovers Kanata is an experienced beach volleyball player, but she quit the sport a few years ago. What happened to Kanata? In order to find out, Haruka and Kanata team up and compete in the upcoming Okinawa Beach Volleyball Junior Tournament. With Haruka’s gusto and Kanata’s experience, the two begin training in the art of beach volleyball. Kandagawa Jet Girls is about the love and passion for sports, and in the case of Harukana Receive, it’s beach volleyball. Kanata stopped playing volleyball due to reasons we should really avoid revealing, but her passion for volleyball gets rekindled when Haruka, a complete newbie, shows interest in the sport. The two have a rough start, but with Kanata’s experience and Haruka’s potential, they join a volleyball tournament and racked up several victories. Aoi from Kandagawa Jet Girls stops participating in jet racing because of, again, reasons we should really avoid revealing, but, yeah, you’ve guessed it, Aoi’s passion for jet-racing is rekindled when she meets Rin, a girl who moves to Tokyo so she can learn more about jet racing. With Aoi’s experience as shooter and Rin’s untapped potential, the two revive the jet racing club to train hard and compete against Japan’s best of the best jet racers.

After dying a pathetic death on his way back from buying a game, high school student and social recluse Satou Kazuma finds himself in Purgatory, sitting before the beautiful goddess, Aqua. She gives him two options: move on to heaven as one normally would, or get a second chance at life in a fantasy world. Realizing that he has the chance to live the life he’d lived in all his favorite games, Kazuma chooses the latter option. Tasked with defeating the evil Demon King in this world, he is given the choice to choose any item to help him in the quest and he chooses the goddess Aqua herself! However, he soon realizes just how useless the obnoxious goddess is and to make things even worse, living in this fantasy world is different from how it would be in the games. Kazuma must work to earn a living just like everyone else, living the fantasy version of the kind of life common to the world he left behind! The one most similar to Cautious Hero when it comes to characters and execution, KonoSuba is an extremely hilarious tale that really brings comedy and Isekai together in a beautiful combination! There are so many similarities between KonoSuba and Cautious Hero, from the main character duo to the sheer hilarity of some of the situations they get into! To really convey how similar these shows are, we’ll just say one more thing: “Listarte”? More like, ”Blonde Aqua”!

Kurihara Misato has been exceptional all her life. As a result, she has lived her life standing out from everybody else and had no friends or the experience of a normal life. After she dies suddenly, she is sent to a divine realm, due for a reincarnation. She is also given one wish – she wishes to be reborn as a normal person with abilities that are average for the world she will be sent to. Misato is reborn as Adele von Ascham, the daughter of a noble. She soon finds out that she possesses incredible magic powers that are way beyond average. Determined to live the average life she has always desired, she enrolls at a hunter school in a faraway kingdom under the alias “Mile”. As much as she tries to live an average life, things happen that continue to show that perhaps Misato was never meant to be just average in any life.   like in Cautious Hero, I Told You To Make My Powers Average in the Next Life features a main character or hero who is leagues ahead of everyone else in the series through hilarious means. Both shows are also comedy Isekai that show their true comedic potential with the ways in which they play around with their main characters’ incredible power contrasted with a sense of incompetence in everyone else.

Shibata Genzou is a pro-wrestler who really loves animals. He wrestles as his alter-ego, “Animal Mask”, where he embodies the persona of a tiger. During the world title-deciding match against his arch-rival, the Macadamian Ogre, Genzou is suddenly transported to a fantasy world by a princess. Her kingdom is being overrun by animalistic monsters and she requests his assistance in terminating them, but given his love for animals, he storms out of the castle and into the world! He decides to start his career as a beast hunter in order to capture and befriend animals everywhere. Joined by Shigure, the wolf-girl, dragon-girl Hanako and the vampire Carmilla Vanstein, Genzou does all sorts of dangerous things in order to fulfill his dream of becoming a pet shop owner.   At First glance, Kemono Michi and Cautious Hero present themselves like polar opposites as far as the main characters are concerned, but there are more similarities than there are differences. Both are Isekai titles with main characters summoned out of nowhere in order to save a world teetering on endless peril. Both shows are also comedies, paying more attention to the individual journeys of the main characters rather than the reasons for their summoning.

God accidentally smites Mochizuki Touya. To apologize, God gives Touya a wish and a chance to be reincarnated in a fantasy world. He accepts the offer and wishes to keep his smartphone in his new world; thus, his journey begins! When he arrives in his new world, he realises that he has an affinity for magic, not to mention a host of cute girls trying to get his attention who journey with him as he comes to grips with this fantasy world.  Like Cautious Hero, In Another World With My Smartphone is a comedy Isekai anime that has a main character who possesses something about them that gives them an advantage in their new world. Another similarity is the fact that neither of these shows takes itself too seriously, perhaps as notable iterations in the current trend of creating Isekai that deal more with making an audience laugh more than anything else.

The Demon Lord Rchimedes put the world through a dynasty of fear and terror, until he was sealed away by the legendary hero, Creasion. A thousand years pass in relative peace, but a mysterious hole opens between the demon and human worlds, resulting in demons overrunning the human world once again. A human king believes that this is the beginning of the resurrection of Rchimedes and decides to summon all the possible descendants of Creasion, all 75 of them, but time makes this incredibly difficult. One of the prospects is Alba Frühling, accompanied by a soldier named Ross who helps Alba whenever he gets into trouble… well, that was the idea. The duo set out to defeat the demon lord yet again, making all sorts of eccentric friends on their journey.  Senyuu and Cautious Hero share a sense of similarity when considering the fact that it has main characters who have the goal of saving the world from its eventual destruction. Another similarity lies in their comedy, with a host of eccentric characters and wacky hijinks that make both series incredibly entertaining. Senyuu is made up of episodes that are much shorter in comparison, however.

Nagumo Hajime is an ordinary 17-year-old whose life changes forever when he and his classmates find themselves transported to a fantasy world where they are given the mission of saving mankind. Hajime’s classmates all get great powers and combat abilities; however, Hajime only gains a transmutation skill that makes him the target of his classmates’ scorn. When they head out to the Great Orcus Labyrinth, one of his classmates betrays Hajime and sends him to the bottom of an abyss where he is forced to survive against dangerous monsters. Hajime resolves to make his way out of the nightmare and find his way back home.  Like Cautious Hero, Arifureta features a main character who was summoned to a world on the brink of destruction in order to save humankind. Both series change the normal structure of the Isekai trope through their characters – Cautious Hero features an eccentric main character and loads of comedy, while Arifureta has an entire class of characters sent into another world instead of a single individual.

Final Thoughts

Isekai is a trope that will probably continue to grow and become even more saturated than it is at the current moment. The trope is rapidly evolving and that being said, it makes sense that there are some really good shows that come from that growth. Mou Hasamazu has an interesting plot and is great for introducing a partner to hentai, while not making them feel particularly strange about the topic. It has great scenes with big-boobs and stays with a single male. Mou Hasamazu shows the hentai stranger side when it brings into Inori’s life. Of course, these clones are all of her boyfriends, and the two have some fun with their situation. Inori gets involved in a gangbang where she is taking cock from all angles and even has a bit of group sex. If you're looking for a more vanilla scene, then you can skip close to the end. It’s here you can watch Inori and her boyfriend have passionate sex.

Isai Nikki Is another basic anime that starts to have some more interesting topics. It has a unique plot line involving a husband, his wife and a colleague. This is great if you’re just starting to get into the deeper side of hentai. Sanae has a kind husband who has started to worry that she is going unfulfilled in the bedroom due to his work schedule. To ensure his lovely wife is getting the sex she needs, he enlists the help of a colleague who proceeds to aggressively make-out with Sanae and fingers her. Soon enough, the colleague finds himself balls deep inside of her pussy. Other than the employed colleague aspect, this hentai is packed with vanilla scenes that don’t get too risque.

Marshmallow helps your partner get a little bit more into the fantasy aspects and is great hentai for letting your partner know that you want to be in control for the night. Marshmallow does have two female protagonists, but the girls are in agreement about sharing the main character. After taking off the magical charm that protects him from being jumped by two succubi, the protagonist wakes up with Saki on top of him. By the time he realizes what’s going on, Saki has his cock in her mouth and is sucking deeply. Later on, Manabe, his classmate, uses her succubus powers to paralyze his body and get her fill of his cock. Megane no Megami is visually appealing and introduces the idea of a good threesome with girl on girl aspects. Like the English title suggests, this hentai is heavily focused on a glasses fetish but has some great yuri scenes at the end. Megan no Megami, does a great job of showing hot girls with glasses. These girls are ready to have sex, and for the most part, are willing to do it anywhere. This hentai shows sex scenes in public places like the school bathroom and has plenty of tight ripping goodness throughout the show. Megane does have an emphasis on female pleasure that some other hentai may lack. If you’re looking for an anime that focuses on the woman, then this show will be perfect for you.

5. Oide yo! Mizuryuu Kei Land

Oideyo is a theme park fantasy hentai with great animation. The anime has couples living out their fantasies and plenty of hard-hitting sex scenes. The whole show is centered in a theme park that is designed to help people cut-loose and have open sex with others. Kei land is a popular theme park for adults in this hentai. Today a girl named Mai, who is a bit of a shut-in, is being dragged by her friends. Once in the gate, she has to dawn a few pasties and starts to realize everyone around her is getting laid. Soon enough, she meets a young boy, and they end up having rough sex inside of the ferris wheel. Many other scenes show girls masturbating or having random sex with strangers. If you want to introduce exhibitionism, then Kei Land is a safe choice to show your partner.

4. Tsun M! Gyutto Shibatte Shidoushite

[es][information_general item1 = "Episodios" content1="___content1___" item2="Emisión" content2="___content2___" post_id=""][/es]

Tsun M is a good introduction to BDSM topics for couples, while staying to one couple, and not going to wild. Tsun M actually starts off with the couple trying simple activities before moving on to more complex BDSM topics. The hentai starts when Saki finds her boyfriend’s stash of BDSM magazines and confronts him. After talking, the two decided it may be best to try out these fantasies. The first sex scene simply sees Saki with her hands tied behind her back. Later on, she is blindfolded, and the grand finale involves a bathing suit and tons of rope. These are simple types of bondage play that anyone can try at home.

3. Saimin Seishidou

Saimin Seishdoum takes the couple on an exciting journey into sex counseling and how to please their partners. Saimin does tip-toe into the cuckold and NTR territory, but the content borders on those lines. The series stars a school where a sex counselor has used mind control to convince a student body to let him help them learn about sex. To do this though, he gives hands-on instructions. In the case of the first couple, he makes the boyfriend watch as he does everything from massage the woman’s boobs to eat her out. The counselor even demands he pay special attention as he has sex with the woman and encourages the boyfriend to masturbate to the site of his cock plunging into her pussy.

Jitaku gets into the rougher territory and starts to show the darker sides of hentai. Jitaku isn’t a hentai you watch for passionate sex, but one that can get your partner going. If you're into blackmail, rough sex, or pregnant women, then this may be the perfect hentai to show your partner. Kareki just had his dad get remarried, and now his new mom is living in his house. Along with her, he got to beautiful step-sisters who love to do lewd things in private. After capturing them on camera, Kareki regularly starts getting blowjobs and having sex with his new housemates. Even better, one of the sisters is pregnant in the final episode and comes to Kareki beginning for his cock. Jitaku may be a little strong for first-time hentai watchers, but if you’ve been warming your partner up, then jumping into this series shouldn’t be a problem. If you want to open the door to mind--control and a bit of NTR then this is your show.

1. Daraku Reijou The Animation

Daraku is a tame, but still a good NTR choice for couples that are looking to add something a little strange to the bedroom. The show quickly gets to the point and is a great choice if you’re looking to have a night full of sex-filled fun. Yurika’s boyfriend gets a mysterious DVD in the mail one day. When he watches it, he is surprised to find out it’s a sex tape of his girlfriend. On the tape, Yurika is being groped by an older man who announces they are going to be married. Before long, he starts to take her panties off and force his huge cock into her pussy. As Yurika is moaning from her pounding, her new husband makes her admit that his cock is better than her boyfriends. Daraku is a great introduction to NTR, but may not be a great option for someone who is completely new to the topic.

[en]What You Need to Know: [/en][es]Lo que necesitas saber: [/es]

  • The Super Mario Maker 2 game is getting a legendary update. On Dec. 5, a free update to Super Mario Maker 2 for the Nintendo Switch system adds Link from the Legend of Zelda series as a playable character, new course parts and a new gameplay mode.
  • After downloading the Ver. 2.0.0 update, the new Master Sword item will be available to use exclusively in the 8-bit Super Mario Bros. style. When this new course part is picked up, Mario will transform into Link, equipped with a new set of moves like attacking with a sword, shooting arrows and dropping bombs.
  • In the recently launched The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening game for Nintendo Switch, Link encounters familiar characters from the Super Mario games like Piranha Plants and Goombas, but this time Link is joining a Super Mario game in Super Mario Maker 2!
  • Transforming into Link using the Master Sword opens up a whole new world of design possibilities for creators. Using his arrows, Link can shoot far off switches that Mario would normally not be able to hit. His new down thrust move with the sword will defeat usually protected enemies like spike-covered Spinies. And with bombs, some walls that would normally be impassable by Mario and friends can easily be blown up.
  • In addition to Link, the update also adds more course parts and enemies, as well as a new Ninji Speedruns mode, perfect for players looking for a challenge. Each Ninji Speedrun event will run for about one week, with new courses distributed periodically. During the event, players will be ranked by their play time in that course. Players can still run the course alongside Ninji Ghosts and collect stamps even after the event period has ended.

[en]Source: [/en][es]Fuente: [/es]Official Press Release

Additional course parts and enemies

  • Dash Block: Available in the Super Mario 3D World style, the Dash Block course part gives Mario a major speed burst when stepped on.
  • Frozen Coin: These coins are surrounded by a block of ice and can only be released if melted by fireballs or other fire elements, including a certain angry sun.
  • P Block: When a P Switch is hit in the course, invisible P Blocks temporarily turn into hard platforms, or vice-versa.
  • Spike: This classic enemy coughs up massive spike balls and launches them at Mario. If used in the snow environment, Spike will toss snowballs instead!
  • Pokey: The iconic stacked cactus from multiple Super Mario games joins Super Mario Maker 2 for the first time. Players can even edit the height of each Pokey.
  • In the new Ninji Speedruns mode, players can take on a timed challenge in courses created by Nintendo exclusively for this mode. Other players’ Ninji Ghosts will run alongside players as they compete against rivals from around the world. The Ninji Ghosts that appear are selected from player data at a similar performance level, so players can gradually improve their performance by running the course alongside other players’ Ninji Ghosts. Players can also collect stamps by clearing courses and redeem them in-game to get special Mii costumes.

Here’s Why You NEED to Use Toxapex on Your Team in Pokemon Sword & Shield

    [ad_top1 class="mb40"]
    [sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]

The competitive landscape of Pokemon constantly evolves over time, with once before powerful Pokemon now swapping out for newer types to take the throne. There are however exceptions to that rule in which no matter how the meta unfolds, some Pokemon continue to thrive due to their incredible stats and ways to overwhelm the other opponent. Toxapex, a Pokemon introduced in Gen VII, is a poison-water-type hybrid that specializes in neutralizing enemy walls with its powerful poison setplays, and its own wall-like build. Players who are looking to create a strong defensive team should look towards Toxapex as a mandatory option since it can take care of a lot of incoming threats, while still being able to recover from powerful counterattacks the opponent throws at you. Now that you have a glimpse of what Toxapex is all about, let’s dive a little deeper into things and provide reasons as to why you NEED to use Toxapex on your team in Pokemon Sword & Shield.

    Toxic Setplays are Incredibly Dangerous

One of the major changes that was made in Pokemon Sword & Shield was removing Toxic from being a move that players could acquire through TMs or TRs, and now only a handful of Pokemon can utilize it. You can acquire it as well through egg moves but you’re pretty much limited to a small list of Pokemon, with Toxapex being one of them. Mareanie, the pre-evolution before Toxapex, is able to learn the move fairly early and once you evolve into Toxapex the move is already there for you. Toxic as a move is very potent in the Pokemon competitive doubles metagame because it creates a threat without having to overcommit in battle, along with placing a timer on the opponent to act quickly. As the match progresses, small bits of HP are sapped from your lifebar which eventually add up over time, and without the right items available your Pokemon are likely to faint relatively quickly.

    A Poisonous Wall

Toxapex being an incredibly strong defensive threat, can setup certain plays in which it comes into battle, takes a few hits from the enemy, and all it needs to do is land toxic before being switched out again. It’s a simple and effective strategy that allows Toxapex to come in as a Sp.Def tank to absorb any damage from the opponent, then set up immediate threats to put the opponent in check. Toxic Spikes is another great move that Toxapex can take advantage of because much like Spikes or Stealth Rocks, it threatens the opponent without much effort. If at anytime during the battle your opponent switches out a Pokemon, Toxic Spikes will immediately hit them, and leave the incoming Pokemon with a deadly poison ailment that once again sets up for powerful set plays. Baneful Bunker is another great defensive tool as another poison option to keep the opponent in check. Anytime a physical attack is initiated from the opposing team, Baneful Bunker acts as a 2-way mechanism in that it protects Toxapex from the attack, and immediately poisons the enemy after impact. This 2-in-1 attack is super good in battles where you know the opposing team is likely to throw out an array of physical attacks to wear you down, and Toxapex can be the answer to minimizing strong offensive plays.

    Great Defensive Stats Overall

It’s not often that you find a lot of poison-type Pokemon with relatively solid stats, but Toxapex is one of those exceptions. While it does tend to suffer in the speed and attack category, it makes up for it tremendously in its defense and Sp.Def base stats. This is where Toxapex shines in the metagame, where you’re likely to run into a lot of offensive teams and Toxapex can slow the game down to your liking. Maxing out its Sp.Def or defensive stats will allow you to take control of the pace and put your opponent under pressure from making poor decisions. One slip up from the enemy can lead to Toxapex setting up deadly traps so that the other Pokemon on its team can come in to clean things up. Another great plus about Toxapex is that it can work on just about any team since toxic is an amazing tool for offensive plays as well. You’ll want Pokemon who can help Toxapex come in safely and establish its position, while also protecting its moderately low HP stats. While not terrible by any account, it’s still something to be mindful of when playing Toxapex because in spite of having an immaculate defense, there are Pokemon out there who can crack through it if you don’t switch out efficiently.

    Final Thoughts

    [sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="ACXA-10791" text="" url="" ]

The current metagame, while still early, is shaping up to be an exciting one especially with Toxapex making waves in the competitive ranked battles. Its versatility and wide variety of options makes it very intimidating and forces the opponent to draw their hand too quickly, allowing you to punish their mistakes. Give Toxapex a try if you’re looking to play at a much slower pace and want to establish immediate control in the match! Toxapex definitely excels more in the doubles arena, where it can help protect its teammates more effectively, and trap opponents whenever they get too greedy. It excels in singles as well but it truly shines when it can play the stall game, and scare the opponent into making mistakes. We hope you enjoyed this quick breakdown of Toxapex! Be sure to stick around for more as Pokemon Sword & Shield continues to evolve! Until next time!

    Who it Caters to

We here at Honey’s Anime have always wondered what it would be like to be like Solid Snake from the Metal Gear franchise. Sneaking around large military bases trying to take down enemy spies/enemies just seems like such a cool concept. Digital Lode seemed to have a similar thought to us and have developed a truly ambitious game. Titled Espire 1: VR Operative, you done the PSVR headset and become a VR cyborg spy who must stop an evil plot that could threaten the world. Does this amazing idea transition to an equally incredible PSVR title? We find out below in our full review of Espire 1: VR Operative for the PSVR!

    What to Expect

Espire 1: VR Operative is a stealth-action PSVR game that gives you freedom unlike ever before. With your super-powered Espire suit, you are the only one capable of taking back a nuclear base from an unknown force. Use a wide variety of weapons and tools to take down enemies and utilize the suit’s wide range of abilities. Scale various surfaces, use visual targeting tools and unleash your skills on this enemy threat. There is no wrong way to engage this enemy threat but failure is not an option! Become the agent the organization needs in Espire 1: VR Operative!
    [ad_top2 class="mt40 mb40"]

    Story

Agent…we have a situation. One of our bases was infiltrated and we need you to help those still inside. You will need to don an Espire Agent which will allow us to keep you out of harm’s way but give you a means of taking back our base. There is only one Espire Unit left meaning failure isn’t an option. You are the last hope for the agency and possibly those who are being held captive. Agent…we wish you luck, your mission begins and time is not on your side.

    Gameplay

If you’ve played any of the more recent Metal Gear games and/or Splinter Cell titles, then you know the beauty of being able to truly do things in your own way. Espire 1: VR Operative has that concept at its forefront by boasting a stealth-action experience but we’ll say this now, it has its problems. When Espire 1: VR Operative works, it is easily one of the coolest PSVR games we’ve played in recent memory. Equally, when we see the various problems that appear in it we remember how far PSVR still has to go as an immersive gaming experience. As with most stealth games, Espire 1: VR Operative is a simple title to explain. Players don their Espire units—which are controlled by an agent in a VR setting while you’re playing with a VR headset—to engage in an infiltration mission. Your Espire unit is given a bevy of cool abilities such as magnetic hands that can allow it to climb walls and other surfaces, a repair tool to fix damage taken in combat and numerous guns from pistols to shotguns and machine guns. Controls in Espire 1: VR Operative work really well allowing players to feel pinpoint accuracy and immersive world engagement. Players can even use their fists to take down enemies—in a comical way sometimes—or motion for them to freeze if they have the drop on them. These concepts make Espire 1: VR Operative engaging and exciting as we loved being like Solid Snake even if for a second. Unfortunately, almost every good thing we can say about Espire 1: VR Operative can be rebutted with a negative thought as well.
While climbing/movement works quite well—as well as manipulating environmental parts to stay in the shadows—there are times where things fall apart in those same elements. We ran into numerous times where climbing proved frustrating as hands went into the walls and wouldn’t register us climbing unless we did some strange hand movements in real life. This wasn’t fixed if we stood up while playing or reconfigured the PSVR apparatuses either. Espire 1: VR Operative has a ton of odd glitches that can truly make for some frustrating segments. We had to restart the game twice from the beginning due to invisible walls appearing where we had to go or other oddities. Thankfully we didn’t keep running into these issues but the popped up often and regularly. Shooting and movement feels incredible in Espire 1: VR Operative—with almost no motion sickness due to the developer’s systems at play—but often these gameplay segments felt a bit repetitive. Usually, you’re going from room to room, trying to find a switch to open a door or take down some enemy to make it to the next room. While Espire 1: VR Operative is generous in the fact that it allows you to create some truly interesting ways to outsmart the enemy patrols, it didn’t ever feel like enough to remove that repetitive gameplay. Still, we commend the fact that aiming is pin perfect and there’s an almost dizzying amount of ways to interact with the enemy from grabbing their knocked out bodies to throwing empty magazines against a wall to make noise. Espire 1: VR Operative clearly learned from the great stealth games we mentioned above and we loved being able to execute these moves with our PS Move controllers versus a regular controller. Visually, Espire 1: VR Operative looks great sometimes and bland other times. Enemies usually look very generic but the other Espire units and some levels look truly pretty cool! Audio is also identical to the visuals. Some voice acting feels movie-like and others feel a bit goofy/lifeless. Given that Espire 1: VR Operative isn’t a huge triple A title we can overlook both categories though as we know these can cost a company big dollars. Though we still wish things were a bit more polished in both the visuals/audio to create a more immersive PSVR experience.
    [ad_middle class="mt40 mb40"]

    Honey's Gameplay Consensus:

Espire 1: VR Operative tries to be one of the more adventurous VR games for the PSVR and in some ways it succeeds all while failing in some ways. Gameplay can truly be a mixture of exciting as you try to sneak by guards while hanging onto a wire on the ceiling and it can be boring when you run around and one punch enemies to submission. Espire 1: VR Operative falters in being extremely glitchy and occasionally boring. However, when Espire 1: VR Operative works—and it does thankfully more often than not—it can make you feel like a covert agent who truly is taking control over a cyborg-like machine. If you are willing to overlook the numerous flaws with Espire 1: VR Operative then you’ll enjoy this title. Espire 1: VR Operative shows that the PSVR has the ability to truly be incredible but equally still suffers from the numerous problems found in most VR titles.

    Honey's Pros:

    • The idea of a stealth VR title is ambitious and it often makes you feel like a spy in a dangerous game of life/death.
    • Climbing walls and other surfaces feels responsive (usually) and gives you numerous ways to be stealthy.
    • Solid visuals
    • Guns aim quite well and the tracking tends to work in your favor.
    • Little to no motion sickness with free movement and that is an impressive feat.

    Honey's Cons:

    • The story is truly forgettable even with some cool ideas thrown in.
    • We ran into numerous glitches while playing some worse than others.
    • Gameplay can be quite repetitive as you constantly are doing the same things for most of the early game.

    Honey's Final Verdict:

Digital Lode should be commended for what they did with Espire 1: VR Operative. While not perfect—far from it—Espire 1: VR Operative is still a fun game that shows the PSVR has the ability to produce amazing VR games. We can only hope that many other studios take note from what Espire 1: VR Operative did correctly and incorporate those concepts in future games, especially the almost non-existent motion sickness. Have you played Espire 1: VR Operative or plan to? Comment below with your thoughts as we love hearing from our loyal readers out there! Mahou Shoujo Madoka★Magica (Puella Magi Madoka★Magica): The Importance of Eye Imagery and Sharing Perspective Part 5

In film, cameras are a window into a character’s thoughts. By moving alongside a character and emulating their actions, a physical closeness develops: a kinesthetic relationship. Through establishing this, a shared space forms, allowing audiences to better understand a character’s psychology. In the previous article, I mentioned that Homura is the antithesis to the magical girl genre, denying the importance of bonds and emotions. For this article and the next, I’ll go into further detail about how space is distorted for Homura and Madoka Magica’s lack of “movement.”

Sharing Space and Denying It: Context and Cameras

Episode 10 is the first time we inhabit the same “space” as Homura. While she’s been on screen before, she’s kept her distance. To emphasize this, the camera does not follow her when she uses magic. Entering her “space” is purposefully denied--we weren’t meant to understand her yet. In the previous article, we mentioned that cameras can mimic a character’s movement. By doing so, audiences share a “kinetic empathy.” If you feel what a character is doing, you viscerally relate. However, this isn’t always possible with Homura. Her power makes her movement undetectable. We see her as an outsider; we don’t share her perspective. With episode 10, we now see through her eyes. When Homura uses her magic, space becomes distorted. The lighting changes, grey becomes prominent--all movement stops. For these few moments, Homura is on her own. When Homura uses her powers she becomes detached from others. This stands opposed to the genre’s values. If magical girls are given a brighter future, a chance to believe and influence their own world through magic, why does Homura’s world seem so dark? Why does her magic change nothing?

Madoka Magica’s Eye Imagery and “Movement”

To answer the previous questions, we’ll need both perspective and movement. Homura’s character will then be further contextualized in the next section. Now that we share Homura’s perspective, eye imagery is important to understand. Before this, there were two prominent shots where the camera emulated a human eye. In the show’s opening, when Madoka runs past several buildings, the shot cuts to black. Then the “camera’s eye opens,” revealing Madoka holding a cat. From above, “tears rain down,” as if to say the world cares--the person watching from above cares. The tears trickle past her face, and we share in her relief; all is good with the world. In the show’s ending, eerie lighting is cast at the center. An eye briefly appears and fades as the ending continues. As Madoka runs into the darkness, the eye opens again, revealing Madoka at its center--the iris. The shot then zooms out, and we see an ominous face. If this cold being has been watching over us, then the world feels frightening and malicious. If the opening leans towards hope (progresses towards positive), shifting from an opening shot of Madoka crying to her reuniting with friends, then the ending is its opposite with Madoka running towards darkness (progresses towards negative), leaving behind her friends. However, despite this reading, there is an incongruity. In film theory, lateral movement can influence the perception of a character. Characters moving towards the camera can seem aggressive and characters moving away can seem passive. Characters who are high above can seem powerful, but characters who are seen very low can seem vulnerable. For further context, this film theory was later tested by Cleveland State University, showing a correlation between the theory and audience interpretation. This theory also applies with left to right and right to left movement. Traditionally left to right is considered good, a movement towards progress--like reading words on a page. Movement from right to left, however, is the opposite, regression and negative--like going counterclockwise. Under this assumption, directors across the world have used movement to convey cinematic meaning. Thus, if the opening shifts towards positive, why is Madoka running from right to left? If the ending is mostly negative, why is she running left to right? These opposing directions create nuance. Madoka runs towards the “past” in the opening, her hopes reaffirmed by a caring world, friendship, and comfort. The opening is a dream, a hope for the future that a simple wish can hold true. Running right to left is then a return to those ideas. For Madoka, her past is a reference point; it allows her to know which direction is “forward.” The ending with its aimlessness contrasts with how Madoka moves. As she travels, the scenery remains the same: endless and dark. Her running towards the right is progressive, however, she moves towards an unknown future. Both thematic and physical movements cancel one another. No matter how far Madoka runs in the opening, she will not reach her dream. No matter how far she runs in the ending, she won’t escape her nightmare. This lack of “movement” is more than relevant--it’s the show’s story.

    Final Thoughts

Both thematic and physical movements are important to Madoka Magica. Without both, characters cannot venture inwards or outwards. Without either, there is no meaning to having suffered. In the next article, I will contextualize eye imagery further and how perception reveals Homura’s worldview and the birth of a new “saint.”

    New Publishing Releases for December

JUJUTSU KAISEN By Gege Akutami MSRP: $9.99 U.S. / $12.99 CAN · Rated ‘T+’ for Older Teens Available December 3rd In a world where cursed spirits feed on unsuspecting humans, fragments of the legendary and feared demon Ryomen Sukuna were lost and scattered about. Should any demon consume Sukuna’s body parts, the power they gain could destroy the world as we know it. Fortunately, there exists a mysterious school of Jujutsu Sorcerers who exist to protect the precarious existence of the living from the supernatural! NO LONGER HUMAN By Junji Ito MSRP: $34.99 U.S. / $46.99 CAN · Rated ‘M’ for Mature Readers Available December 17th Plagued by a maddening anxiety, the terrible disconnect between his own concept of happiness and the joy of the rest of the world, Yozo Oba plays the clown in his dissolute life, holding up a mask for those around him as he spirals ever downward, locked arm-in-arm with death. Osamu Dazai’s immortal―and supposedly autobiographical―work of Japanese literature, is perfectly adapted here into a manga by Junji Ito. The imagery wrenches open the text of the novel one line at a time to sublimate Yozo’s mental landscape into something even more delicate and grotesque. This is the ultimate in art by Ito, proof that nothing can surpass the terror of the human psyche.

Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu: Die Neue These (Legend of the Galactic Heroes: The New Thesis)

Like it’s original 1987 counterpart, Die Neue These retells the novel series of Yoshiyuki Tanaka but with modern animation and updates to technology that have happened between the broadcast of the first series, and this one. The story tells the centuries war between the Galactic Empire and the Free Planets Alliance. Leading the forces of the Free Planets Alliance is Yang Wen-Li, an unassuming admiral who can instantly what looks like the brink of defeat, to a crushing victory like when Daigo Umehara beat Justin Wong at Street Fighter III in Evo 2004. For the Galactic Empire, their top military commander is Reinhard Von Lohengramm, who wishes to take over the universe, and genuinely wants to make it a better place. Assisting Reinhard is his best friend, Siegfried Kircheis, and that is who today’s HCW is going to cover.

    Siegfried Kircheis Highlights

    [sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" bookwalker_id="" cdj_product_id="" text="crunchyroll" url="http://www.crunchyroll.com/legend-of-the-galactic-heroes-die-neue-these" ]

    1. He’s An Excellent Leader

While he may be second-in-command to Reinhard, it doesn’t mean that he’s capable of being an excellent commander on his own skills and merits. Granted he’s not as ambitious as Reinhard but very early on, he shows that he could be equal or maybe even greater than Reinhard as a tactician. This is proven in episode 8 of when he suppresses The Castrop Rebellion. So, what was it about the Castrop Rebellion that made it look impossible? Maximillian Castrop, the son of the former treasurer, kept some money he stole from the Empire, and used an advanced weapons system to protect the planet he was on (we’re talking something almost akin to the Death Star). Kircheis found a way to make the system work against itself instead of fighting head on, and instantly proved himself to be a great leader based on his own merit.

    2. He Keeps Reinhard Humble (and is a Supporting Friend)

Reinhard, his best friend since childhood, is rightfully an ambitious man with pure plans for galactic domination. Not just for the sake of money or power but to make it a better place! Reinhard was born from low nobility while Kircheis was born as a commoner. Growing up as neighbors, they played a lot and were both heartbroken when the previous Kaiser bought Reinhard’s sister from their father. Disgusted with how the upper class abuses their power, Reinhard wishes to take over and wants Kircheis to help him. While Kircheis supports his best friends efforts, his presence allows Reinhard to stay humble and remind himself why he wishes to take over since his ego and ambitions can get the best of him at times.

    3. He’s a Nice Guy

OK, so he’s an admiral that orders people to kill one another, but that doesn’t mean he’s a bad guy. He’s just a soldier following orders and once you get to know him, he’s really one of the nicest people you could ever meet. After Reinhard wanted to punish another admiral for disobeying orders, Kircheis pleaded with Reinhard to be lenient with that admiral, and got him to calm down. When he visited the Alliance controlled Iserlohn Fortress to exchange POWs, he went out of his way to greet Julian, Wen-Li’s ward, to stay healthy and acknowledged him as an equal.

    4. He Cares About Annerose

Annerose, the sister of Reinhard, is pretty much the object of Kircheis’ affection from the moment he set his eyes on her. Even after 15 years, his feelings for her never wavered as he was willing to put his life on the line for her. After the Kaiser died, everybody knew there was going to be civil war as Reinhard was gaining power through the chaos, and his enemies thought if they couldn’t get to him, they might as well get to his sister. Anticipating this would happen, Kircheis was already keeping watch at her compound and quashed any attempts on her life.

    5. Yuuichiro Umehara

Inheriting the role from Masashi Hironaka, the original voice actor, is Yuuichirou Umehara, who you likely know as the voices of Goblin Slayer in Goblin Slayer, Takuma from Tiger Mask W, and Hazama Kuroo in Young Black Jack just to name a few. As Kircheis, Umehara does an excellent job of capturing the character’s composure, fairness, his boyish charms, and his relatable charisma of being someone who can connect to regular people despite his position. Thanks to his chemistry with Mamoru Miyano, the voice actor for the ambitious Reinhard, you get an effective contrasting of these two characters as both equals who can’t leave without the other, and as commanding officer and subordinate.

    Final Thoughts

    [sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" bookwalker_id="" cdj_product_id="VVCL-1203" text="" url="" ]

Considering that this series is a remake of the original, we can anticipate what happened to Kircheis in the original novels and series is bound to happen in Die Neue These as well. So before that happens, we thought it would be nice to re-explore this character for long dedicated and new audiences. Thanks to his presence and the impact he makes, you get a better idea of Reinhard and you get a different perspective as to how one rule monarchies can be applied. Pop culture tends to negatively portray them due to their histories. Kircheis’ presence gives a kind of motivation to Reinhard that maybe such systems can work under the right people, and if you’ve seen the original series (or when Die Neue These gets to that particular iconic scene), you get a better understanding of what we’re trying to say and why he’s a worthy HCW.

Enen no Shouboutai (Fire Force) Preview (No Spoilers)

The world has been almost completely covered with fire, making mankind’s survival a bit complicated. To make matters worse, some people suddenly burst into flames for no apparent reason and turn into horrible monsters that destroy everything in their path. To fight those monsters, the Fire Force was created, formed mostly by pyrokinetic firefighters. But as the saying goes, power corrupts, so an 8th company within the Fire Force was created just to make sure that the other seven companies behaved correctly. Takehisa Hinawa is the second in command of the 8th company, a man determined to follow the rules and find out the true origin of the Spontaneous Human Combustion epidemic, to save mankind.

Takehisa Hinawa Highlights (Spoilers Beyond This Point)

    [sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" bookwalker_id="" cdj_product_id="" text="crunchyroll" url="https://www.crunchyroll.com/fire-force" ]

    1. He Is Loyal

While he may look as if he is always exasperated with Obi and the other members of the Eighth Company, the truth is that Lieutenant Hinawa is fiercely loyal to Captain Obi and his desire to hold the whole Fire Force accountable for how they treat the Infernals and the collateral damage that can happen once Infernals and Fire Fighters clash. He won’t let anyone behind either, and if one of his subordinates comes in with a crazy story, Hinawa will believe them enough to check out if it’s true instead of dismissing them.

    2. He Wears Glasses

This may sound a little shallow, but Takehisa Hinawa wears glasses and that makes him look smarter, cooler and more handsome than many of his co-workers. Hinawa doesn’t use them just for fashion, he is practically blind without them which is funny given how he is the sniper of the group.

    3. He Won't Allow People to Waste Their Potential

Before he was a Fire Fighter, Takehisa Hinawa was a soldier. One of his biggest regrets was not using his abilities to shoot his best friend when he turned into an Infernal before his friend suffered. Since then, he has been quite dedicated to making sure that no one wastes their gifts or their life. So while he insists that everyone trains to become the best, Hinawa also tells Obi to stop training when it’s needed.

    4. He Is an Unstoppable Sniper

Takehisa Hinawa is a second-generation fire user. While this means he can't create fire, he can control fires that already exist, and in his particular case, this means the combustion inside bullets and guns. So on one hand, he can shoot non-lethal bullets at his subordinates when they slack off, and on the other, when he shoots an infernal, you can be sure he will hit his target as he can make the bullets move and ricochet in different angles so they will always meet the mark.

    5. He Doesn't Allow Nonsense In Dangerous Situations

While other members of the Eighth Company try to find amusing ways to use their abilities, Hinawa is patient with shenanigans. This is especially obvious in his relationship with Maki, as he will find ways to make sure that she is not creating fire imps just for the fun of it, and always reminds others in the middle of a battle that they’re in a war. He’s very focused on his mission, which makes us believe that Hinawa will be part of the people who will find a way to stop the Spontaneous Human Combustion forever.

    Final Thoughts

At first glance, Lieutenant Takehisa Hinawa is the most serious and unremarkable member of the Eighth Company. However, as we get to know him, we can see that beneath his serious and no-nonsense demeanor, he is completely devoted to his team and his mission and that he has a very warm heart: he pushes people away mostly because he doesn't want others to suffer as he did when his friend became an Infernal. With that said, we really want to know what you think of Hinawa in the comments below!

Madoka Magica is a story of contrasts. Sectioning off its world, the show bars the gates to each characters’ past, ending their childhood forever. However, through an understanding of duality, a light emerges. To their backs are walls, but ahead lies the rest of the world. Continuing from the last article, the purpose of eye imagery will be contextualized further. By sharing Homura’s perspective, we see how her worldview forms and how the show brings about the dawn of a new spring.

Through Her Eyes: A World Without “Magic”

Episode 10 reveals that Madoka Magica is “cyclical.” These characters have gone through similar events before, and Homura is burdened with that knowledge. Now, the audience shares her perception--we are finally allowed to move, feel, and empathize with her. To capitalizes on this, this episode features more “eye shots.” When Homura accepts Kyubey’s contract, she does so to save Madoka. Her soul gem manifests. She reaches towards the sky and the camera follows Homura’s perspective. As she looks above, her soul gem is at the center of the shot. Surrounded by clouds, her soul gem forms an “eye in the sky.” She clasps her hands over her soul gem as if in prayer. For a brief moment, Homura is allowed to hope. If the world were compassionate, then the rain might fall across her cheeks, share in her sorrow over losing someone. However, Homura will learn quickly that children do not survive; they die becoming adults. As she brings her soul gem closer, the shot zooms into her eye, and we see the sands of time fall. The cogwheels of her shield turn, and it spirals towards the center, enveloping the shot in light. The shot then fades to black, and the “camera’s eye” opens, blinks, then closes. Homura’s face is seen from above. She was asleep before, but now she has awakened. Fourteen minutes into episode 10, the main cast has killed a witch hatched from Sayaka’s soul gem. In despair, Mami kills Kyouko. Aiming her gun at Homura, she cries, “If soul gems give birth to witches… then we have no choice but to die.” Before she pulls the trigger, Madoka fires first. The next shot is zoomed out, and we see Mami’s body fall to the floor. In the background are the city lights. From the center is a light so bright it forms a circle around it--eye imagery once more. From this point onwards, Homura can’t afford to be a child--she doesn’t have time to be one. Homura’s power is time and in any other show, this would be powerful. However, she doesn’t truly control it. The more she uses her power, the more she changes. The world hasn’t changed. The only thing that’s different is Homura’s perception. When Homura is saved again by Madoka, Madoka begs to be killed. As the rain pours above them, Homura brings out her gun. As she aims it towards Madoka, one thing becomes clear: if magic is hope, then magic does not exist.

    Walpurgisnacht and Context

In the real world, Walpurgisnacht is (Walpurgis Night) also called Saint Walpurga’s Eve, an event celebrated on the night of April 30 and ends the morning of May 1. Traditionally, this event was meant to venerate Saint Walpurga who protected Christians from sickness and witchcraft. In Germany, Walpurgis Night also coincides with Hexenacht (Witch’s Night), which is an event where witches were believed to congregate and revel with the devil on Brocken, the highest peak within the central German mountains. This peak is also the site where Goethe, the German author of the play Faust, has his titular character meet Mephistopheles and share communion with witches. While regional differences do exist, a similarity does arise. By celebrating the last day of winter, people witness the rebirth of nature. People ward off winter’s evil spirits by dressing up and burning bonfires as they await the dawning of spring’s first light.

A Spring Light to the Winter Night

In Madoka Magica, Walpurgisnacht is the end--an event that marks the destruction of Mitakihara City. By borrowing its real-world counterpart, the show will establish the birth of a saint-like figure. What marks an end can also mark a beginning. Homura has never seen a future without an end. Holding nothing back, Homura uses artillery, tanks, and weapons of all calibers to attack the final witch, destroying much of the city around her. As episode 11 reaches its climax, we bear witness to Homura’s defeat. Barely conscious, her eyes struggle to stay open. In the distance, the witch floats around like a spectral iris. The lids of Homura’s vision close, forming a shape around the witch’s body. In this shot, Homura’s perspective forms an eye around the witch’s body. It stares back at her as if to say that these two are mirrors of one another--that Homura’s future, the very lessons she has embodied, is the very thing she stares upon. Angered by this, Homura violently reaches for her shield and winds it. However, a thought occurs, “If I go back again… I’ll only make Madoka’s destiny worse. Then in the end…everything I’ve done…” Her arm falls down, punctuating her thoughts. Everything she has done has been for nothing. Zooming out, we see the truth we knew all along: Homura can no longer move; her right leg is broken, a cruel reminder that she’s gone nowhere. Despair takes over and her soul gem darkens. But just as it nearly fills, the person who’s saved her before appears once more. Madoka stands before a dying Homura. A warm light dawns upon the cold world.

    Final Thoughts

    [sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="B00CJ6I02S" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]

Homura rejects the very lessons of her genre. Despite her power, she cannot change an inevitable outcome. Time moves forward only to repeat itself. Frozen by her very magic, Homura no longer moves in this cold, uncaring world. In the final article, I will discuss how Madoka Magica gives significance to suffering and reaffirms faith in its genre.
