Now in its fourth year, Tokyo Comic Con has continued to grow exponentially. 2019 saw a huge turn-out across three days, including cosplayers and attendees from around the world and some really big-name celebrities. With cosplay, stage shows, shopping, movie memorabilia, and more Tokyo Comic Con 2019 had plenty to show for everyone’s interest—well, as long as that interest was based in Western media, of course! Oh, or Godzilla. There was also a lot of Godzilla. Tokyo doesn’t boast many events that embrace movies, comics, and TV that doesn’t originate in Japan, so Tokyo Comic Con has to fill that void the best it can. With the growing number of fans for Marvel, Harry Potter, Star Wars, DC, and Netflix shows, there’s more and more of a market in Japan for this kind of event. And the fans came out in droves in 2019 to devour all the hard to find things that were readily available for the weekend! We went along for two of the three days as well and had yet another great year at Tokyo Comic Con. Read on to see our full report of the best parts, what to do there, and how you can enjoy the event to the fullest if you decide to go next year (hint, you should try to go).

Basic Info:

When it Established 2016
Length of Event 3 days, held in November or December
Place/Location Makuhari Messe 〒261-0023 Chiba Prefecture, Chiba, Mihama Ward, Nakase, 2−1
COST 3,500 yen (Fri), 3,800 yen (Sat), 3,500 yen (Sun) A limited number of 3-day tickets available for 7,500 yen Tickets do not include autograph or photos with celebrity guests – separate tickets must be purchased
Hotels Tokyo Comic Con is held at Makuhari Messe, a large convention complex a short distance from Kaihimmakuhari station. Because the venue is used for so many events throughout the year, there are a lot of hotels in the immediate area. Be warned that most of them are business and luxury hotels, so they aren’t going to be cheap – but you can walk to the event! However, staying anywhere in East Tokyo including the Tokyo Station area puts you at easy access of less than an hour by train. There are plenty of hotels, hostels, and Air BnBs to choose from that still have good access if you do a bit of planning.

Company/Event Message for Fans/Attendees

“Stan Lee, the creator of “Spiderman” and “X-Men”, who later became the chairman emeritus of MARVEL, had brought revolution to the American comic industry. Stan Lee, the “Father of pop culture”, encountered the king of technology, Steve Wozniak, aka Woz, who was one of the co-founders of Apple Inc. This triggered chemistry between the two legends, which led to the “Silicone Valley Comic Con” (U.S.A ). Meanwhile, Woz had advocated the idea of “Tokyo Comic Con” and this was where it all began. Stann Lee had been summoned as the honorary goodwill ambassador, Daniel Logan as the first goodwill ambassador. Japanese actor Ryoma Takeuchi had also been called upon to raise excitement. On December 2016, the event made its way as Tokyo Comic Con 2016 and had closed out a stunning success. “In close relation to “Silicon Valley Comic Con” organized by Woz, Tokyo Comic Con is a festival celebrating Japanese and American pop culture, while keeping its genetic “American” style foundation. Unlike other existing comics, film, animation festivals or game shows, this is a place where everyone can share and enjoy the revolutionary and enthusiastic experience. The event is friendly to all generations, from the youngest to the eldest, and everyone will surely have their intellectual curiosity aroused! This year, the enhanced Tokyo Comic Con is coming back with its latest updates… So don’t miss it.” (taken from the Tokyo Comic Con official English website - http://tokyocomiccon.jp/english/index.html)

What to Expect

Tokyo Comic Con can be an overwhelming experience if you aren’t sure what to expect. The event is very, very crowded, with some portions of it being nearly impossible to move through at times. Getting into many of the shops involves waiting in a queue that can last anywhere from twenty minutes to over an hour. The same goes for the queues to get into the event as well as the cosplay changing areas; you should plan to wait and factor that into your arrival time. The main stage area as well is very crowded, so if you want to have a good view of something, you need to get there early. Finding a table to eat some food at can also be challenging. Basically, there are a lot of people at Tokyo Comic Con, so it’s better to go into it already expecting that. Now that we got the negative stuff out of the way, what positive things can you expect at Tokyo Comic Con? Plenty! You can expect to meet some really nice people, especially if you cosplay because the cosplay community at Tokyo Comic Con is really friendly and social. You can expect to see real movie props and costumes, exclusive art and merch, and upcoming projects like new figurines or SEGA arcade prizes. You can expect to find a lot of chances to take photos, and even more, chances to spend money! There is also a surprisingly large number of options for food with both an indoor food court and an outdoor—and 2019 finally saw some vegetarian options added after four years of nothing but fried potatoes.

What to Bring in Order to Enjoy the Event

A Camera

Whether you’re snapping photos of your favourite cosplayers, selfies with the Batmobile, or pictures of an upcoming awesome figurine you’re going to want your camera (or at least camera phone). There are countless things to take pictures of including movie props, replicas, murals, and more. Plus cosplayers love to have their photo taken or to take a photo with you—assuming you use common courtesy and respect and always ask them first, of course!

Money

A huge part of Tokyo Comic Con is browsing the huge selection of merchandise available. There’s always a lot of super exclusive stuff, too! From huge stores with incredible figurines and other collectibles to smaller shops selling t-shirts and plushies—and don’t forget the artist’s alley with all original artwork!—there’s plenty available to buy. You won’t want to find yourself without enough cash to buy that thing you never knew you needed until you saw it. Remember, Japan is still very much a cash-based society so many vendors do not accept credit cards!

A Reasonable Bag

We said it once and we will say it again; Tokyo Comic Con is very, very crowded. There are times when it’s hard to even walk at all, and you will be surrounded on all sides by other people. Toting around a massive, unnecessary bag isn’t ideal in this kind of situation. Bring a bag that you can fit your essentials in and leave it at that. If you really need to have a big bag nearby, consider using the cloakroom. For non-cosplayers, it costs ¥500 (in 2019) and could be accessed as many times as needed. Three-day pass holders also received a Comic Con backpack as part of their package, which a lot of people were using.

A Fandom-Inspired Outfit

Tokyo Comic Con is great for connecting with other fans, and also for unmissable photo opportunities as outlined above. That means even if you aren’t cosplaying, it’s great to have an outfit that highlights your favourite movie, show, or comic that you’re there to celebrate! Whether it’s a fashionable outfit inspired by your favourite character or even just a simple t-shirt, the event is a lot more fun when you’re dressed to show what you love. Plus it’s an easy way to meet other fans of the same thing, and definitely makes for better pictures with props, backgrounds, and cosplayers!

What to do While There / What is Available

Tokyo Comic Con may have only been in its fourth year in 2019 but there was already plenty for fans to do. It was a three-day event, and each day was jam-packed with things to see and experience. One of the biggest things to do is shop! There are a lot of stores with stalls at Comic Con, including big names in the nerd industry in Japan like Poney Comb, Hot Toys, and Small Planet. In addition to their huge shops, a lot of smaller stores also had stands set up displaying their wares. With everything from t-shirts and figurines to handbags and posters, there was something for every person and every budget. A lot of merchandise was also exclusive to Comic Con, or quite hard to get in Japan outside of the event (like Stranger Things or Game of Thrones merch). There was also a modest artist alley area with original art by artists from around the world! If your wallet is a bit deeper, one of the main draws of Comic Con for many fans is the chance to meet a favourite celebrity. You can purchase an autograph or a photo, or both if you want, and have your chance to meet them for a few moments. Plus you can leave them a gift in their designated present box! Tickets for autographs and photos went on sale on the Comic Con website in advance and it’s important to get one then, or you might not get a chance to meet your favourite celebrity. In 2019, Tokyo Comic Con hosted Rupert Grint, Mark Ruffalo, Orlando Bloom, Ian Somerhalder, Zachary Levi, Jude Law, and Chris Hemsworth. Tokyo Comic Con boasts a huge stage with different events spread out over all three days. These include panels with celebrity guests, cosplay competitions and showcases, and other media-related panels with the Japanese side of the industry. While most of these events on the main stage are conducted in Japanese, they’re still fun to enjoy no matter what language you speak. It’s fun to see the incredible cosplayers, and all of the celebrity guests speak English with a translator. Don’t let the language barrier keep you from enjoying the main stage because it’s a chance to see some really cool stuff. Finally, Comic Con has a lot of film props to check out, take a photo of, and generally just enjoy. The centre of the hall in 2019 had motorcycles from Terminator, the Batmobile from Batman, and the Delorian from Back to the Future to name a few. There were also original Batman and Joker costumes and droids that had been used in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. The bus from Speed and the RV from Jurassic Park: The Lost World was also there, and could both be entered for an additional ¥1000. You could take pictures with and of all of this movie memorabilia for some great memories of your own.

Cosplay

One of the biggest (and most fun!) parts of Tokyo Comic Con is the cosplay! The event attracts hundreds of cosplayers from Japan, Asia, and the rest of the world. The most common cosplays in 2019 were quite predictable, with Marvel and Star Wars being represented the most. There were quite a few DC fans representing their fandom as well, along with a smattering of Star Trek, Disney, Jurassic Park, John Wick, and more. Japan especially loves Spider-Man and Ironman, so there were quite a few of those characters specifically—including multiple Ironman suits that moved and lit up. Cosplayers really were bringing their best! There’s a lot for cosplayers to do at Tokyo Comic Con as well, and the event caters to them more than many other events in Japan. The cosplay changing area is separate from the rest of the event, with its own entrance into the venue to give cosplayers a quick entrance and exit without worrying about everyone else. The cosplayer changing area also had its own toilet and vending machines, which had a considerably smaller queue than the ones in the main event. The cloakroom was also located there, with its fee included in the general cosplay fee (which we will get to in just a moment). Tokyo Comic Con doesn’t have a separate area of the main event for cosplayers to gather and stand as many Japanese events do, but that just means cosplayers are encouraged to enjoy the main event along with everyone else instead of being separated into their own space. It also stops cosplayers from claiming one spot for photos and staying there all day, giving everyone a chance to take photos around the event and have fun. There were a few good backgrounds for Marvel and Star Wars especially in 2019 for cosplayers to pose with around the event. There were also cosplay showcases and contests throughout all three days on the main stage, allowing pre-registered cosplayers a chance to show off their outfits on the big screen for everyone. Some of these contests, like the DC and Harry Potter ones, even had celebrity guests join them on the stage. Like other cosplay events in Japan, Tokyo Comic Con requires cosplayers to change at the event. This doesn’t apply to really simple outfits (clothes colour coordinated to match a character, a Harry Potter scarf, etc) but if you can be recognised as a specific character, you have to change at the venue. As mentioned earlier, the cosplay changing room has its own queue away from the public entrance to the event. It was an additional ¥1000 to cosplay at Tokyo Comic Con 2019 in addition to a regular ticket, but the fee also included the use of the cloakroom as many times as necessary throughout the day. The changing area was split into men and women, and there was also a gender-neutral room available at the request of the staff. As with any event in any country, it’s important to check the specific cosplay guidelines and rules available on Tokyo Comic Con’s website if you want to cosplay there in the future. Conveniently, they are available in English and Japanese.

Final Thoughts

Tokyo Comic Con 2019 showed that Comic Con is growing a lot in Japan. Four years ago it didn’t exist at all, and now there’s a huge market for Western merchandise and characters that Comic Con is filling. With thousands of fans showing up for all three days, huge celebrity guests, tons of great merch, and incredible cosplay Tokyo Comic Con is becoming one of the biggest events of the year in Japan. And for fans of Western media, Comic Con is a mecca for things that are otherwise hard to find in a country full of its own anime, games, movies, and TV (with Disney as the only exception to this rule). While Japanese media will probably always remain king in Japan, Tokyo Comic Con lets Western media have its time in the spotlight, too. Did you attend Tokyo Comic Con 2019? How was your experience? What did you do there and what was your favourite part? How did it compare to other events in Japan, and other events abroad? Would you like to go to Tokyo Comic Con someday? We would love to hear your questions and experiences in the comments!

Who it Caters to

The most obvious people that Kingdom Under Fire 2 caters to are fans of the first game. Kingdom Under Fire 2 is a direct sequel to the game Kingdom Under Fire: The Circle of Doom, picking up right where that title left off. While the gameplay isn’t exactly the same and new features have been added (which will be explored in more detail later in the review), the feeling of the game, the lore, and the universe remain the same. Fans of the series that are willing to try out some different gameplay elements in addition to what they already know and love are definitely who Kingdom Under Fire 2 caters to the most. Even if Kingdom Under Fire 2 is your first game in the series, though, that’s okay. Kingdom Under Fire 2 uniquely caters to fans of both MMORPGs and RTS games by merging the two together into one awesome package. Gamers who like either of these genres will find the game easy enough to pick up and learn how to play; fans of both genres will love seeing how they’ve been combined to work together in this title. Kingdom Under Fire 2 is also great for people that love fantasy settings and stories, with lots of magic and fantasy-weapons and lore to get behind, learn about, and appreciate.

What to Expect

Fans of the Kingdom Under Fire series may flock to buy Kingdom Under Fire 2 based on the name alone, assuming they already know what they’re going to be getting and will like it. But what sets it apart from other games in the Kingdom Under Fire universe, though, is that it’s partially a real-time strategy game. The last time the series released an RTS game was in 2005 with Kingdom Under Fire: Heroes. It’s important for gamers who want to purchase Kingdom Under Fire 2 mostly because they enjoyed other games in the series that it won’t necessarily be like the others they have played. It’s going to be arguably more than half RTS, so it’s better to expect that going into it. Even if you have never played another Kingdom Under Fire title, you can still expect to be able to play Kingdom Under Fire 2. While the game may appeal directly to those who have played other games in the series, it isn’t made exclusively for them. Kingdom Under Fire 2 introduces new players to the series as well and still offers a fun game for them that isn’t confusing. It’s simple enough to pick up and the more you play, the more you will understand its unique gameplay mash-up. Expect to be overwhelmed a little right at the start, and then for things to begin to make sense as you get used to the game. Don’t give up!
[ad_top2 class="mt40 mb40"]

Story

Kingdom Under Fire 2 is set on the continent of Bersia, a land historically devastated by war because of the evil adversary Encablossa. Previously, the struggle was mostly between two factions - the Dark Legion, and the Human Alliance. In the previous game, Circle of Doom, Encablossa brought even more war and destruction in their alternate dimension where they had been banished, which is where the game was set. In Kingdom Under Fire 2, war has returned to this dimension yet again. But instead of just the Human Alliance and the Dark Legion, another group has joined the fray, loyal to Encablossian themselves - the Encablossians. The Encablossians have been brought to Bersia from the alternate realm by an antagonist called Regnier. Now the continent is yet again lost in total war. It’s up to you to take control of the battlefield and fight to gain control of contested Bersia, and decide it’s fate yet again. Which faction will have the ultimate power in the end?

Gameplay

Kingdom Under Fire 2 combines two genres of games into one—MMORPG and RTS. This makes its gameplay unique and challenging and sets it apart from other similar games that only stick to one of those two genres. The RPG side of Kingdom Under Fire 2 lets you choose one of five different main hero characters to play as when you begin. These five characters are the Gunslinger, the Spellsword, the Berserker, the Ranger, and the Elementalist. Each character has his or her own strengths and weaknesses, and a different style of combat to learn. As you play, you earn experience and level up, completing missions to see the full narrative of Kingdom Under Fire 2. But that’s not all that Kingdom Under Fire 2 has to offer; that’s only half the package, actually. While you mainly control your hero character, you also have control over your huge army of warriors who follow that hero. It’s up to you to decide where to move them on the battlefield and what to do to control the tide of war in your favour. There’s a lot of tactics involved to be successful in Kingdom Under Fire 2, not just button-mashing or luck. You have to switch to the RTS view to control your troops, adding another gameplay element. No matter how powerful your hero may be, they need to also have a strong army behind them if they want to achieve victory. That’s how Kingdom Under Fire 2 combines real-time strategy games and role-playing games together into one fun game!
[ad_middle class="mt40 mb40"]

Honey's Gameplay Consensus:

Kingdom Under Fire 2 achieved its goal of combining two different kinds of games into one package. The end result is pretty interesting, and is a lot of fun to play right from the start. The characters and creatures are cool, the fights are challenging but not impossible, and the music is fun. There are some issues with balanced gameplay and some parts of the game dragging, but if you can look past those issues, Kingdom Under Fire 2 is entertaining to play. Let’s get into our more detailed pros and cons!

Honey's Pros:

  • Most of the character designs in Kingdom Under Fire 2 are epic, with some really cool ideas for armour and weapons, along with fantasy creatures, monsters, and more.
  • The transition between RPG and RTS gameplay is pretty smooth, and it doesn’t feel like you’re playing two different games that have been smashed together. The merge feels legitimate and intentional (though the RTS side is stronger, which we will explain in the cons)
  • The combat graphics are awesome, and you’ll feel like a total badass regardless of which hero character you choose to play as.
  • All the hero characters are unique in their own way, making it hard to pick which one to play as. But that just makes the replay value of Kingdom Under Fire 2 that much higher when you want to try again as a different hero!
  • Kingdom Under Fire 2 has both single-player and online multiplayer options, catering to a wide number of gamers and what they are looking for.
  • The heavy metal OST is a nice touch, simply put.

Honey's Cons:

  • In a world moving swiftly away from the hyper-sexualisation of female characters in games, Kingdom Under Fire 2, unfortunately, has female characters that are clearly sexualised both in their outfits and body types, and even the way that they move.
  • There’s often just too much dialogue to read and many gamers are likely to find themselves just trying to skip through it unless you really like reading. It feels especially monotonous when you find yourself talking to the same characters over and over again.
  • In line with the above, the MMO side of Kingdom Under Fire 2 falls short of the RTS side. Many quests feel pointless and like they’re just wasting time rather than actually contributing to the story. While the gameplay itself is fine, it’s hard to feel invested in the narrative behind the quests themselves.
  • Getting new armour doesn’t change the physical appearance of your character. It’s a little bit disappointing

Honey's Final Verdict:

Overall, Kingdom Under Fire 2 is a fun game. It looks really cool, has a lot of interesting fantasy lore, and is a unique gameplay experience. It’s strange to think that no one else seems to have thought to combine RTS and MMORPG into one game, but Kingdom Under Fire 2 has done just that. And while the idea still needs a bit of final polishing to be balanced, for one of the first games to do so, Kingdom Under Fire 2 did great. You can enjoy both genres of the game in one, by yourself or online, and sink a lot of hours into achieving ultimate conquest. If you are intrigued by the idea of an RTS/RPG merge, or just like fantasy games in general, Kingdom Under Fire 2 is worth checking out. Have you played Kingdom Under Fire 2 yet? What did you think? Are you still considering whether to play or not? Did our review help you make a decision one way or the other? Drop us a comment below!

Company/Event Message for Fans/Attendees N/A

What to Expect

It’s very easy to assume you will have a great time here if you are a Granblue Fantasy fan but if you are new to the scene, it can be overwhelming but at the same time, super fun. By the time the event is over, you’ll be preparing for next year’s event as soon as tickets go on sale. There are tons of attractions to take part in, several merch booths so you can get all the awesome items from the franchise, and they have tons of cosplayers as your favorite Granblue Fantasy characters. We definitely took a lot of photos of the event which some will be included here but more will be in future articles so make to keep an eye out for when we publish them, here, on Honey’s Anime.

In addition to the Granblue Fantasy entertainment aforementioned, Granblue Fantasy Fes also has food vendors serving up some of Japan’s finest foods, as well as, themed food selection based on the Granblue Fantasy franchise where you can feel extra special like one of the 4 Knights! There are also photo booths and setups with themed props and sets straight from the Granblue Fantasy universe.

What to Bring in Order to Enjoy the Event

In order to be prepared for Granblue Fantasy Fes, you should definitely bring a backpack with all the necessities. We’re talking about water, an extra batterie charger for your phone, maybe some winter wear since it is during Dec. and it gets cold outside and also inside but, of course, not as much. Also, make sure to bring plenty of money in cash as some places only accepted cash and not debit/credit cards. This was mainly for one or two food stalls in the venue which one of them had themed food from the Grandblue Fantasy franchise.

In addition to food, there are also cafeterias and pop-up food stalls just outside the venue halls (still inside Makuhari Messe) for more traditional Japanese foods as well as a konbini (corner store) with even cheaper selections to consume. You can also bring your camera as well for some really good opportunities to take some cosplay photos because we must say, there was some really amazing cosplay of the characters from the Granblue Fantasy franchise like Gran, Katalina, Narmaya, Lowain, and many, many more.

What to Do While There/What is Available

While attending Granblue Fantasy Fes, there will be tons of attractions for you to take part in that is also very entertaining. There was, of course, Granblue Fantasy: Versus playable with 11 characters to chose from and Cygames held event tournaments open to those who wanted to participate for a chance to be recognized and be eligible to advance to future tourneys. There was also a VR experience called VR 4Knights where you can experience Granblue Fantasy in an exclusive character interaction only at Granblue Fantasy Fes.

The event also had mini-games to play like balancing a ball down a small inclined board with little to no borders and needing to make it to the end of the board without going over the edge. There was an attraction that was in the same vein as a pinball machine with bumpers, and rotating flippers and there was also a catapult game where you flung a ball and needed to make it in a small opened hole of a container that looked like a small vase. Other attractions in the area had you using a whip to knock down objects, and a wack-a-mole style game with lots of entertaining lights! Upon completing these attractions without losing or penalties, you would receive a prize. Some would give you a stamp which if you collected 3 stamps, you be able to show this at a special booth where they approve the completed stamp section for a chance to receive in-game prizes via unique code to enter. This was for the Granblue Fantasy mobile game in Japan only.

In addition to the attractions, Granblue Fantasy Fes also had physical items from the game on display for fans to take pictures of and enjoy the realism of such things like the life-like weapons from your favorite characters. There was even a very nice miniature replica of Grandcypher as well as, and Grandcypher Ride attraction with amazing graphics and mechanical flooring for immersion which turned it into a pretty awesome ride and experience. We’ll be able to tell you more in a separate article so stay tuned for that!

Furthermore, there were stage performances every day with the first night also including a special Night Party with performances from the band behind Granblue Fantasy, Stella Magna! The rest of the nights were dedicated to introducing the cast of Granblue Fantasy which included the staff for Granblue Fantasy: Versus, the voice actors, and cosplayers of your favorite characters which they performed wonderfully choreographed action scenes for fans to enjoy. During these stage performances, they also announced new updates for Granblue Fantasy: Versus which include the new DLC characters to be added next year in 2020. So far, the announcement was only for the Japanese release as the North American release is still undecided.

There was also another announcement for a new ARPG game in the Granblue Fantasy franchise called Granblue Fantasy: Relink. This new game will feature the 4 Knights: Lancelot, Vane, Percival, and Siegfried, in an epic adventure in the fantastical world of Granblue Fantasy. Release date and other features will be announced later in 2020 so make sure to keep an eye for this as it is expected to be great! Finally, there was a wonderful 3D visual show of several characters from the franchise including the 4 Knights and the characters were being projected onto and special clear screen with singing and dancing for the crowd. In addition to this performance, the 4 Knights also held a Q&A with the audience and it was very unique as the voice actors for the characters were there acting out the 4 Knights backstage and answering questions from fans in real-time! This was something VERY special as I don’t think we’ve ever seen anything like before. Sure, maybe the Tupac projection during Coachella many years ago but this tops it for sure!

Final Thoughts

Granblue Fantasy Fes 2019 ended with a huge bang—literally—with streamers being blown in the air and each streamer having some of the character’s names on them. This was definitely a great experience for us as it was our first time attending Granblue Fantasy Fes since its conception in 2017. Since then, the event has been growing and with the announcement of Versus and Relink, we feel it will only get better and better and, of course, bigger!

We got some additional articles coming out in the very near future which we’d like to reiterate: Grandcypher Ride, an Interview with the Director and Producer and Impressions for Granblue Fantasy: Versus, and last but not the least, cosplay from the event which is definitely worth waiting for! Are you a huge fan of Granblue Fantasy and would like to attend it someday? Let us know in the comments and maybe we can give you some advice on getting the most experience out of the event when attending. Heck, if you have some burning questions about the event or the contents of this article, sound off in the comments below! Until then, we hope you enjoyed the report and we’ll see you next time, here, on Honey’s Anime! Jya ne!

Toradora! and the Meaning of Christmas

With Christmas right around the corner, today we’re looking back at some memorable anime series and how they explore the meaning of the holiday within a Japanese context. Without going into too much detail, the main differences between Christmas in Japan and many Western countries like the U.K. and America is that it is more of a couples holiday than a family one and that, besides the small minority of Christians in Japan, it does not really have any religious connection. There’s also the whole fried chicken thing but that’s a treat for another article. With that out of the way, let’s dive into Toradora! and the significance it places on Christmas.

Taiga as Embodiment of the Japanese Christmas Spirit

Despite her frequent outbursts and general irritable attitude, Taiga’s childlike belief in Christmas shows a softer, more considerate side, albeit with a hint of selfishness due to trying to be on good behavior for Santa. She is completely in love with the idea of Christmas and wants to be part of it. Interestingly, part of this zeal for the holiday comes from her past education at Catholic school which actually connects this back to the Christain holiday and the tradition of helping the disadvantaged. At that school, Taiga volunteered to help orphaned children and still continues to send them presents “from Santa” every year as we learn in episode 18. While not religious herself (as far as we know), Taiga chooses to believe in the spirit of Christmas and Santa Claus, partially because of a memory of a childhood dream of Santa visiting her when she was a little girl and promising to return if she’s a good girl but mostly because she thinks it’s a good thing to believe in that can spread happiness whether or not it’s true or not. She even sends presents to her estranged father and step-mother in spite of not actually wanting to make amends. In any case, Taiga is a perfect example of what a strong belief in Christmas would be in a Japanese context, similar to how many Japanese people choose to follow Buddhist and Shinto religious traditions and ideals without literally believing.

Season of Forgiveness

Another major plot point of this arc in Toradora! is the crystal glass star that Taiga gives to top the tree for the Christmas party. Minorin is completely distraught after her stray softball crashes through the window and breaks the star. With some help from an insistent Ryuuji, it is eventually fixed and becomes symbolic of people who may go through trauma and make mistakes but are able to recover from their damage and come out shining in the end. This again connects to a core tenet of redemption of forgiveness in Christianity and also later interpretations of Christmas like Dickens’ famous A Christmas Carol.

Of Love and Santa Claus

As we mentioned before, Christmas in Japan is considered a romantic holiday more than a family one and this factors heavily into Toradora!’s interpretation as well. The climax of the Christmas arc is Taiga realizing that she does have feelings for Ryuuji after he comes to her house when she was alone after the party and plays with her dressed as ‘Santa Bear’. Before she believed it was okay to be “relying” on Santa as she didn’t really believe in him (but chose to anyway) and seeing now that she has really been relying on Ryuuji is a major revelation. It’s interesting that things end pretty bittersweet at the finale of the arc with Minorin officially rejecting Ryuuji after she saw Taiga crying after he left but this all still reflects the importance of romance on Christmas and sets up the remainder of the series. The original song Holy Night that Taiga and Ami sing at the beginning of episode 19 is arguably another manifestation of this that connects to more modern Christmas songs that often have a romantic element, as opposed to traditional caroling songs.

Altogether, Toradora!’s Christmas arc is one of the most memorable in all of anime and stands out quite a bit from the many one-shot fluff episodes in other series as it can be interpreted as having many connections to both traditional Western ideas of Christmas while still fitting snuggly within a modern Japanese context and exploring the often complicated feelings associated with the holidays. What Your Favorite Anime Characters Want for Christmas and What You Should Actually Get Them People rarely get everything they want for Christmas, but sometimes that can be a good thing. We've got a few examples of that lined up here in the form of several popular anime and manga characters whose wants don't really line up with their needs. So, let's not waste any time and see who what they'll be receiving from responsible gift-givers.

[ad_top2 class="mt40"]

Goku

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="B07DNXSNWS" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]
[information_general item1 = "Wants" content1="To fight stronger opponents" ]

While not his highest priority from the start, Goku’s drive to battle and overcome those more powerful than him has practically become his entire reason for living. And if he runs out of opponents he might as well just die and fight really strong dead people. And the fact that he tends to end up saving the world as a result probably only strengthens the appeal.

[information_general item1 = "Should get" content1="Child neglect charges" ]

Yeah, yeah, we get that the world needs to be saved and everything, but nevertheless, we assume CPS has a few things to say about throwing your kid into the ring with planet-destroying supervillains.

Katsuki Bakugo

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="B07K1534TW" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]
[information_general item1 = "Wants" content1="Bigger explosions" ]

The term “more bang for your buck” has never had such a perfect embodiment before Bakugo. His progression as a Hero in training has almost exclusively manifested in the form of increasingly powerful explosions produced from his tiny beads of sweat, so why stop now?

[information_general item1 = "Should get" content1="A nice quiet getaway with Deku" ]

These two clearly have issues they need to sort out, so they deserve some relaxing downtime from the constant media attention, supervillain threats and worse, school, where they can do so in peace. They could spend some time at the beach, enjoy a stay at a ritzy resort, or even take a ride on a cruise ship. You guys like seeing Bakugo and Deku together on ships, right?

Nezuko Kamado

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="imdb" url="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt9335498/mediaviewer/rm2564251904" ]
[information_general item1 = "Wants" content1="More nap time" ]

Nezuko is a demon who actively suppresses her natural urge to eat people, sustaining herself exclusively through sleep. We're told that she needs several days worth of shuteye at a time just to survive, but Kimetsu no Yaiba finds new reasons to pull her from her slumber at practically every turn. Frankly, she seems like she could use some rest.

[information_general item1 = "Should get" content1="More screen time" ]

Yeah, we’re being selfish, but can you really blame us? Nezuko is easily the show’s best character and makes every scene she’s in all the more entertaining. But because of her previously mentioned affliction, she needs to spend most of those scenes fast asleep leading most of the runtime without the levity of her comedic naivety or the grip of her badass struggle for self-control. Plus, she’s just really cute. We want more Nezuko, okay?

Char Aznable

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="B002Q52CBW" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]
[information_general item1 = "Wants" content1="A new mobile suit" ]

Most pilots in the Gundam franchise stick to one or two mechs, often only switching to derivatives of their signature model if at all. Not Char though, his hunger for new mobile suits has led to him piloting and then abandoning over a dozen different varieties. A brand new mech probably appears twice on the man’s wish list every year.

[information_general item1 = "Should get" content1="Self-esteem counseling" ]

For a guy with such a handsome face, Char must have some massive insecurities to constantly hide it behind a mask. It doesn’t even matter which mask he has, as long as it’s within his reach, he’ll hide behind it. And if he can’t find a mask, well he’ll just settle for a pair of oversized sunglasses. This need to hide behind masks is such an immovable fixture of his psyche that even his clones share the obsession. In fact, the only time Char went maskless for a long length of time was the 1988 film Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack and he hasn’t shown himself in any capacity since. Can someone please teach this boy to love himself already?

Armin Arlert

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="crunchyroll" url="http://www.crunchyroll.com/attack-on-titan/episode-31-warrior-733255" ]
[information_general item1 = "Wants" content1="To spend some time with his best friends" ]

This prominent supporting character from Shingeki no Kyojin lives up to his role by always having the backs of his lifelong pals Eren and Mikasa. His endearing devotion to them is plainly displayed during the many times he puts his life on the line for their sake and the many more times he lets his signature scream loose when he sees them in danger. Unfortunately, the three of them haven’t been able to chill together very much, since that whole deal with the murderous titans threatening to eat them at any moment and the secret conspiracy condemning them to be isolated from the world and die horribly tend to take precedence. They just can’t catch a break, though Armin would probably really like to.

[information_general item1 = "Should get" content1="A lifetime supply of Halls" ]

Armin, we love you, buddy. But all that shrill screaming just can’t be good for your throat.

The Bench

[information_general item1 = "Wants" content1="To ruin light novel heroes’ romantic prospects " ]

Not all heroes wear capes. Some choose not to and some just can’t. Because they’re benches. This recurring character from Ore wo Suki nano wa Omae dake ka yo appears just about every time someone wants to make a love confession to resident protagonist and douchebag Joro and (somehow) ensures that said confession goes as badly as possible for him. Whether the confession is happening in a park, at a library, or on a rooftop, The Bench is always there to wreck Joro’s sleazy plans rain or shine. Now that’s dedication.

[information_general item1 = "Should get" content1="To ruin light novel heroes’ romantic prospects" ]

What? The Bench is doing God’s work. We’re not about to interrupt God’s work. Especially not on Christmas. You keep protecting those Oresuki girls, Bench. We’ve got your back.

Final Thoughts

Isn’t it great to give during Christmas? Be sure to let us know what you would give your favorite anime characters in the comments and have a very merry Christmas.

A Retro Treasure Indeed
  • System: PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PC (Steam)
  • Publisher: Yacht Club Games
  • Developer: Yacht Club Games
  • Release Date: December 10, 2019
Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove - Launch Trailer

Who it Caters to

Shovel Knight by Yacht Club Games came to be in June 2014 and was met with so much praise that the company knew what they had to do…continue making Shovel Knight expansions! Yacht Club Games would go on to make not one DLC or even two but several and each opened up the story of Shovel Knight by giving you control over several other characters! Now in 2019, Shovel Knight hasn’t faded into legend just yet and has one final piece of treasure just waiting to be dug up, Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove! With the entirety of Shovel Knight games included—as well as a new one called Shovel Knight: Showdown—we grabbed our blue armor, took our shovels and went back into the world of Shovel Knight once more to give you readers a review! Here is our full review of Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove for the PS4!

What to Expect

Developed and published by Yacht Club Games, Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove contains all the DLC of the Shovel Knight games as well as Shovel Knight: Showdown. Each of the various expansions of Shovel Knight have players fighting through various levels with different characters attempting to survive stage hazards and nasty bosses! Akin to series like Mega Man, you are free to take down various enemies at your leisure and will earn gold in doing so! Use your growing funds to power up your heroes/villains and become a force to be reckoned with! Shovel Knight: Showdown acts as a 1-4 player platform fighting game where you choose one of several characters from the Shovel Knight world and attempt to outlive your friends/opponents. Gather those gems faster than your opponent and stand as the victor in Shovel Knight: Showdown!
[ad_top2 class="mt40 mb40"]

Story

Shovel Knight follows the tale of the aptly titled Shovel Knight as he wallows in defeat after losing his partner the Shield Knight. The powerful Enchantress in the meantime gathers her forces and begins to reign destruction on the world! Shovel Knight learns that the Shield Knight can be saved but to do so he will need to re-enter the Tower of Fate, the place he lost her originally and do battle with several menacing foes! Included in Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove are several pieces of DLC—Plague of Shadows, Specter of Torment and King of Cards—that expand the tale of Shovel Knight even further! Will you rise to become the hero, save the world behind the scenes as a man with his own agenda, prove your worth to your evil lord and/or become the king you wish to be? Those are just a few of your options in this giant definitive edition that is known as Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove!

Gameplay

As far as retro-themed games go, Shovel Knight has always been the best way to see how games of yesteryear could be enjoyed even in the 2010s. Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove now acts as the way to enjoy the entirety of Shovel Knight which contained several campaigns where players could see the story through the eyes of different characters from the story. For example, Shovel Knight: Specter of Torment where you take control of Specter Knight as he beats down various warriors to recruit them for the Enchantress. Behind the veil though lies a troubled tale of a warrior who has lost his original memories and has become something he never dreamed of. Meanwhile, Shovel Knight: King of Cards—the newer of the DLC expansions—has players becoming the King Knight who has to rise to become a different sort of king via a card game called Joustus. Now knowing all this might not be enough to explain what Shovel Knight is—or why Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove is worth your time—let us explain more on how these retro games inspired by the greats like Mega Man truly work. Shovel Knight—meaning the first title—had players becoming said title name character as he beat down bosses to reach the dark Tower of Fate! Shovel Knight is armed with his powerful shovel and can topple enemies by digging at them or even jumping on their heads using his shovel as a pogo stick! The end goal was to nab coins, gain items and eventually reach the last boss Enchantress! All this was done by navigating tricky levels filled with traps and stage hazards that tested player’s old school skills as they jumped over large pitfalls and avoided deadly spikes. The following DLC didn’t change much but added various power ups for that specific character and slightly different gameplay mechanics. The Specter Knight used a scythe which meant he could traverse levels by hitting various obstacles to swing himself around and the King Knight could slam his mighty body and dash towards walls/enemies with relative ease. The beauty of Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove is that it took what we loved about Mega Man-like games and made for a more modern spin to them.
We won’t go into detail for each game—as most of these games have been tackled by us or other reviewers—but we will discuss the whole package and the included Shovel Knight: Showdown. As a whole, Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove feels like a collection package where you choose a save slot and then choose one of the several games to play on that slot. At any time, you can quit from the game you’re currently playing and just start a new campaign on a different save slot which is always a nice touch for collective editions like Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove. Many of these titles might have been played by fans already—as the series did start in 2014—but having them on one disc/package makes for a nice way to enjoy the series without having to change games or menus every two seconds. Shovel Knight: Showdown is the game we want to focus on the most. Acting like a mixture of Super Smash Bros and Towerfall Ascension, Shovel Knight: Showdown has you choosing one of several characters—such as Shovel Knight, Shield Knight and so forth—and fighting either the AI or friends in a 1-4 player arena! The goal is to nab a specific number of gems before you enemy does and while it sounds easy enough, the mechanics is where things become tricky. Players will need to beat their opponents physically and mentally to nab the gems and also survive the stage’s various hazards that can whittle their health away. While it might not be a full blown campaign like the other games, Shovel Knight: Showdown is fun and can be enjoyed alone or with others in equal measure. Though having some buddies rage at you for hitting them into a lava pit never gets old. Visually and sound wise, Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove still retains its beauty to both the eyes and ears respectfully. The soundtrack for Shovel Knight has always been absolutely breathtaking and that hasn’t changed in 2019! In terms of graphics, while Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove won’t be pushing your system of choice to the limits, it appeals to those who grew up in the 80s-90s with those old school 8-16 bit games! The art is something we’ve always admired in the Shovel Knight franchise and we honestly wish more indie games learned from how Yacht Club Games does it best.
[ad_middle class="mt40 mb40"]

Honey's Gameplay Consensus:

Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove is akin to getting several games for less than a full priced title and that to us is well worth the investment. Included in this huge complete edition is two new pieces of DLC—Shovel Knight: King of Cards and Shovel Knight: Showdown—which gives players even more to enjoy for a series that truly deserves all the accolades it receives. The beauty of Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove is that you aren’t bound to any one piece of DLC at a time. If you want to play the Specter of Torment DLC then switch to good ole original Shovel Knight, you just need to quit the game and choose the title you wish to play! Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove is a literal treasure for fans of the franchise and can be for those who somehow have missed it! There is no doubt in our minds reader. You absolutely better ask Santa for Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove!

Honey's Pros:

  • Five games for less than a full priced game
  • All past Shovel Knight DLC has been included and still plays as well as before
  • Amazing soundtrack that reminds us of the Mega Man years
  • Shovel Knight: Showdown is truly a surprise that can be enjoyed alone or with up to 4 friends!
  • Play alone or co-op which means grab a friend for a Shovel Knight night!
  • The various stories and tales from each game weave perfectly together and make for a large scale piece of lore

Honey's Cons:

  • Still can be one of the most frustrating titles at times due to difficulty
  • Shovel Knight: King of Cards is probably our least favorite of the bunch but still quite fun

Honey's Final Verdict:

Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove really was a great early Christmas gift for us here at Honey’s Anime! We have always treasured the series—that pun not intentional—and getting all of them in one package is like getting one huge gift in our stockings. Even if you have played all of these amazing pieces of DLC before you owe it to yourself to nab Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove so you can always have them in one definitive place! Are you buying Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove this holiday season? Tell us if you are—or what other games you might be longing for—in the comments below! Top 10 Christmas Dinners in Anime

$

[ad_top1 class="mb40"]

Christmas in Japan is quite different from what we're used to in the West. While, for us, the tradition has to do a lot with religion and being together with our family, in Japan, it’s more of a romantic day or a day to spend with friends. This means their Christmas specials are either very influenced by the American view of Christmas with buying presents and somehow having to save Santa because the man gets kidnapped by everyone in town or a calm moment for the characters to reflect on what has happened to them over the year. Which brings us to the Christmas dinner, which sometimes is with their family, but most of the time is with the friends they’ve made over the series. And sometimes, even when the series is not a comedy, Christmas is the time to relax, have a good laugh and for us the viewers, to see how different our favorites can be when they’re not in the middle of a crisis. Today we’ll go through some of the best Christmas Dinner scenes in Anime for you to enjoy this Holiday season. Word of warning: Because most of these specials happen in the middle of a season, there may be some slight spoilers in the entries. Proceed with caution.

-Spoilers Ahead-

10. Sakura-sou no Pet na Kanojo (Pet Girl of Sakurasou) episode 14

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="imdb" url="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2296348/mediaviewer/rm1709807361" ]
[information_general item1 = "Episodes" content1="24" item2="Aired" content2="October 2012 – March 2013" post_id=""]

Life at Sakura-sou is as chaotic as ever, especially as the students are preparing for Christmas Eve. Misaki needs everyone out of the house as she needs privacy to confess her feelings to Jin, Sorata and Mashiro’s relationship is very strained as Mashiro doesn’t really understand why Sorata is angry at her and her attempts to apologize have only made Sorata angrier, and Nanami is being pressured on by her friends to confess her feelings to Sorata. With that combination, we can only expect wacky hijinks, right? Wrong. Windows and Lights on Christmas Eve, episode 14 of Sakura-Sou no Pet na Kanojo, subverts a lot of expectations, but as we're talking about Christmas Dinners, let us talk about that: We don't get to see the fancy dinner party that Mashiro was invited to, or Sorata and Nanami’s dinner date because Sorata is informed that Mashiro disappeared from the party and has to look for her. When she finds her, we discover that it is because she wanted to share a Baumkuchen with Sorata and carried it out to look for him. That's it, that's the "dinner scene", but it's so lovely and so full of the meaning of Christmas—reaching out to our families and friends to make amends and treasure their company—that we just had to add it to the list.

9. Kimi ni Todoke (Kimi ni Todoke: From Me to you) episode 22

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="crunchyroll" url="https://www.crunchyroll.com/kimi-ni-todoke-from-me-to-you/episode-22-a-christmas-612623" ]
[information_general item1 = "Episodes" content1="25" item2="Aired" content2="October 2009 – March 2010" post_id=""]

To make a fun Christmas for everyone, even those who have to take remedial classes due to their low grades, Shouta organizes a party for everyone and makes sure Sawako knows that she is included, which makes the girl very happy. However, her family traditionally spends Christmas together, and thus, she is torn between her "first" Christmas with friends and making her parents happy. It's a contrast between the Japanese tradition of friends and romance, with the more Western view of Christmas, especially as we see how important family is to Sawako and why her parents want to celebrate it together: She was originally going to be born on Christmas, and thus, she was considered a gift from heaven. Christmas is a heartwarming episode of Kimi ni Todoke, that you should always watch over the holidays because it has everything: both the desire of friends to spend time together and have fun as they remember the year gone by and the importance of family. Dinner at the Kuronuma’s house looks beautiful. While only Sawako and her parents are there, and the only real decoration is the tree, we see the careful preparation of chicken and cake, as well as the traditional toast. It is interrupted by a call from Ayane, which makes Sawako’s parents realize what she was missing and thus, they send her to the party. Heartwarming doesn’t even begin to describe what happens next, and you really should watch it for yourself.

8. Kobayashi-San no Maid Dragon (Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid)

When you are a hardworking office woman who also happens to live with two dragons, Christmas may not be the first thing on your mind. So when Tohru is asked by a friend to do a Christmas show for the elderly, Kobayashi is filled with anxiety since she’s not sure if the dragons know how to do something like that properly. At the same time, Kanna learns about Santa and is not sure if she will get presents as she’s no longer in the magic world and is trying to make sure that everyone knows she’s a nice girl. When the girls decide on “The Little Match Girl” as their play, things get a bit more complicated as the dragons decide the story itself is not interesting enough, so they add a bit of magic to the play. While the play is the best part of the episode, as you would never imagine how "The Little Match Girl" suddenly became an action film, it is the dinner afterward with all the dragons and their masters at Kobayashi's apartment what really warms the heart. We get to see a short shot of the food they have for the night, which includes chicken, cake—given to Elma by the elders as a thank you for the part, and turkey. We also get to see them play together and act like a real family, which is, after all, what Christmas is about.

7. Wotaku ni Koi wa Muzukashii (Wotakoi: Love is Hard for Otaku) episode 6

[information_general item1 = "Episodes" content1="11" item2="Aired" content2="April 2018 – June 2018" post_id=""]

It’s Narumi and Hirotaka’s first Christmas as a couple, but Hirotaka is not precisely excited about the date. On the other hand, Koyanagi is very annoyed as it seems that her Christmas will be lonely again since her boyfriend Kabakura is quite serious around the holiday about work but she is surprised when he reveals that he was working hard to pay for a reservation he made six months ago at a fancy restaurant to make up for their last year. For many anime fans, Wotaku ni Koi wa Muzukashii may hit very close to home as Narumi seems more preoccupied with the prospect of getting a special mystery box from her favorite series and Hirotaka prefers to spend the time playing videogames and doesn’t really seem to care for the whole tradition of Santa. In fact, they spend their Christmas together playing games and eating pizza. It’s still a reminder, mostly thanks to a short scene with Naoka, that the important part of Christmas is the connections we make with each other, even if said connection is through Wi-fi.

6. Himouto! Umaru-chan, episode 8

[information_general item1 = "Episodes" content1="12" item2="Aired" content2="October 2015 – December 2015" post_id=""]

There’s one thing that will make Umaru work when she’s at home and ditch her favorite hoodie, and that’s the chance to turn on the kotatsu for winter. Sure, it only lasts for a few minutes, but at least Taihei manages to get her to help clean the house. The reason behind Umaru’s love for Christmas is basically because she has the chance to stay at home and do nothing except having a nice dinner with her brother. Unfortunately for her, Taihei needs to work overtime on Christmas and she ends up feeling lonely in her own house. The first half of the episode is the only part dedicated to Christmas, as the second one is reserved for New Year. And again, we only get a short image of what Umaru considers a perfect Christmas dinner: Umaru, her brother, her hamsters, a box of KFC, and two liters of Coke. We don’t get to see a more complex dinner until her New Year, still under the kotatsu, but now accompanied by Taihei and his friend Takeshi who have a very special ritual for the countdown. This is a sweet episode, at a slower pace than usual, ideal for a slow Christmas Eve.

5. Ore Monogatari!! (My love story!!), episode 17

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="imdb" url="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4616700/mediaviewer/rm2791844096" ]
[information_general item1 = "Episodes" content1="24" item2="Aired" content2="April 2015 – September 2015" post_id=""]

Yamato and Takeo decide to organize a Christmas party for all their friends, which makes everyone happy as that means that they won’t spend the day alone. They both are very interested in their friends Kurihara and Nanako getting time alone so that they can talk about their feelings, but Kurihara is so nervous that he keeps messing up the situation even as Yamato and Takeo do their best to keep them alone in a very awkward way, making Nanako think twice about going out with him. The dinner, which is a small buffet at the karaoke place, is more aligned to what one would expect of a Christmas dinner with friends. There are a lot of different fruits and vegetables, beef and cold cuts, and even a small fondue setting. It’s enough to make you hungry as you see every student pick their favorites around the table and share food with each other. It’s a fun party, even with the awkward situation that Kurihara and Nanako find themselves in.

4. Fairy Tail OVA (2016)

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="NEOBK-1977003" text="" url="" ]
[information_general item1 = "Episodes" content1="3" item2="Aired" content2="May 2016– December 2016" post_id=""]

As the town of Magnolia also celebrates Christmas, all the members of Fairy Tail are helping to decorate the whole town for the holiday. However, the fact that they are not in a mission doesn’t mean that their normal troubles are over, and so, Lucy spends most of her time complaining about everyone to anyone who cares to listen to her more than five seconds. This is not just for their usual quirks but also because Lucy’s apartment got volunteered for the Fairy Tail’s Christmas Party and she’s not quite happy about that because she knows the chaos her teammates can cause. As it’s to be expected, the whole dinner happens to be a big disaster: There is a lot of alcohol so everyone gets drunk, and a game of Guild Master ends up with Gray ordering Erza to strip naked and go home like that, which does help to sober up some of the group. It’s fun, it’s chaotic, and there’s very little time to enjoy the food, but in the end, it reminds us that they’re not just teammates, they’re also friends.

3. Hug tto! Precure, episode 45

[information_general item1 = "Episodes" content1="49" item2="Aired" content2="February 2018 – January 2019" post_id=""]

When Santa Claus comes down with a cold and his reindeers also get sick, it’s up to Hanna and the Precure team to save Christmas. Dr. Traum, still trying to get Ruru to recognize him as her father, creates a mechanical reindeer and sled and the whole team works to make all the presents on time. But while Dr. Traum, Santa, Hana, and Emiru are out giving out presents, Ruru stays home as she wants to learn how to cook a special meal for a Christmas party. Unfortunately, said party is interrupted by Gelos who is desperate to stop time to make sure she will never grow old. In a sweet change from the usual Save Christmas’s plot, the time spent with Hana playing as Santa is quite short, less than half the episode, and the battle to purify Gelos is also quick. What is given more focus are Ruru’s attempts to replicate a curry recipe, and the advice given to her not to do that, but instead, make her own special dish to show Dr. Traum her true feelings. As it’s very close to the series’ end, they have made friends with practically all the villains and the Christmas party is with them, even with the most recently purified. While the general theme of Hug tto! Precure is to face the future with your friends, this particular episode doubles on the meaning of choosing your family, just in time for the Holidays.

2. Saiki Kusuo no Ψ-Nan (The Disastrous Life of Saiki K.), episode 32

[information_general item1 = "Episodes" content1="120" item2="Aired" content2="July 2016 – December 2016" post_id=""]

Christmas is a very difficult time for a psychic, and Saiki is the living proof of it. After all, he doesn’t just get to see the nice part of the holidays, with people being nice and loving each other, he can also read their darkest, most depressing thoughts. But his parents try very hard to make Christmas a tradition, no matter what. On this particular night, Nendou has invited himself to dinner and, once Seiki’s parents learn that he’s never had Santa visit his home, they decide it’s time to correct that situation, no matter what. Dinner at the Kusuos’ is very nice, even if Kusuke is not present. We get to see a bit of it before Kunihari and Kurumi realize that Nendou has never seen Santa, and it's a very western-style dinner with turkey, spaghetti, sushi, ham, and a gorgeous strawberry cake. It's just a pity that Saiki seems to be completely unimpressed by his family’s attempts to make a happy holiday dinner for everyone.

1. Aggressive Retsuko: We Wish You A Metal Christmas (Aggretsuko: We wish you a Metal Christmas)

[information_general item1 = "Episodes" content1="1" item2="Aired" content2="December 2018" post_id=""]

Retsuko has had an interesting year, and now she wants to finish it with style: the perfect Christmas dinner to photograph for her Instagram account, as she wants the high that validation from perfect strangers gives her. At the same time, Haida is stressing about inviting Retsukto to his club's Christmas Party but keeps freezing as he remembers how she rejected him last time he asked her out. As the clock keeps ticking and Retsuko realizes that there’s no time for her to get a fancy dinner and show how happy she is to her followers, she stresses more and more until she can’t hide it anymore. As we can imagine, everything piles up against Retsuko and we can't help but feel amused at all those problems until she realizes that the true meaning of the holidays has nothing to do with how fancy or special the place you spend them in is but with whom you spend them. It's a heartwarming moment for our favorite metal lover red raccoon and a good reminder that if you have friends, even fast food can be a great holiday meal.

Final Thoughts

There’s not much more to say about Christmas Dinner that we haven’t said before with all the series we’ve discussed: it’s not just the food, it’s the company and the feelings behind it. So all we want to say is that this holiday season, no matter what you celebrate, we hope that you spend it the way that you love and with the people you treasure the most. But please, let us know what is your favorite holiday meal, and while you’re at it, your favorite holiday anime special, in the comments below! Happy Holidays!

Top 10 Gen. 8 Pokémon You’ll Want to Catch Right Away and Where to Find Them

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" bookwalker_id="" cdj_product_id="" text="pokemon.com" url="https://www.pokemon.com/us/pokemon-news/dynamax-the-wild-area-max-raid-battles-pokemon-camp-and-poke-jobs-headline-pokemon-sword-pokemon-shield/" ]

It’s time to welcome the new generation of Pokémon with the latest addition to the franchise, Pokémon Sword and Shield. In the Galar Region, we travel meeting new faces from Gen. 8 alongside a mix of familiar Pokémon from all previous generations. Training new Pokémon can be exciting, but it can also be overwhelming trying to figure out which would be the best to invest your time in while you play the story. For this reason, we created a list of Gen. 8 Pokémon you’ll want to catch right away, so you can get an insight into what Pokémon will be worth your time before you reach the final Gym Challenge. Keep in mind this selection is targeted at Pokémon you can catch, train and evolve before you beat the last Gym Challenge, with no after story completion required. With that said, enjoy catching, evolving and training your future 8th generation Pokémon champions!

[ad_top2 class="mt40 mb40"]

10. Grapploct

A good Pokémon to have on your team could be Grapploct because of its high attack, HP and special defense. Unlike other Pokémon in the list, we chose Grapploct, the evolution of Clobbopus, because this second evolution is widely available in the wild. To catch Grapploct you will need to make it to Route 9 after getting your Rotom Bike updated to run in water. Grapploct comes with two handy traits, one is Limber, an Ability that will prevent it from getting Paralyzed, and the other is a special attack called Octolock, which lowers the Defense and Special Defense of your opponent in every turn. Grapploct will be your must go to Pokémon when you’re looking to break the defenses of your rival’s sturdiest tank Pokémon.

9. Morpeko

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" bookwalker_id="" cdj_product_id="" text="pokemon.com" url="https://www.pokemon.com/us/pokemon-video-games/pokemon-sword-and-pokemon-shield/" ]

Morpeko is introduced as the cute companion of Marnie, one of the rival Gym Challengers in Pokémon Sword and Shield. If you liked the adorable goth-looking Pikachu, Morpeko, you don't have to wait too long to catch one of your own. It roams around Route 7 and Route 9, and if you’re looking for it, you don't need to catch more than one, as its Ability will always be “Hunger Switch”. This Ability is unique to Morpeko, and what it does is that at the end of every turn, it will make him switch between Full Belly Mode and Hangry Mode. But… What exactly does that mean? Well… Initially, the change is purely aesthetical, however, this changes at level 55, when Morpeko learns its signature move “Aura Wheel”. With Aura Wheel, Morpeko’s Hunger Switch to Hangry Mode makes the attack hit as a Dark-type, as for in Fully Belly Mode, the attack will hit as an Electric-type. Dark and hangry… Full and energized… Ha... Haha... Get it...?

8. Falinks

Falinks is a cute bunch of Fighting-type Pokémon you can encounter marching from wall to wall in the ruins in Route 8. Because of the way the game presents it inside the mini-maze, it’s impossible to not notice it, but Falinks has more to offer than how it looks. Falinks has well-rounded stats, two of which reach 100 base points, them being Attack and Defense, making it a good addition to the team as an offensive or defensive party member. Falinks doesn’t evolve, but it naturally appears in the wild with the Ability Battle Armor, compensating its lack of evolution with guaranteed 0 critical hits done to it. Being a pure Fighting-type, Falinks is only weak to 3 types, one of them being Fairy-type to which you’ll be super effective against, so technically you’ll have pretty good odds to win any fight with a Falinks on your team.

7. Applin

It’s easy to tell that Applin is a Grass-type Pokémon, however, within itself, it hides the fact that it’s also a Dragon-type Pokémon, one of the strongest types of the franchise. We recommend you go right away to Route 5 and catch yourself an Applin, not because of its types, but because early on in the game inside the Wild Area you will easily find either a Sweet Apple or a Tart Apple, items that will make this Pokémon evolve into one of two versions of a fierce and delicious looking dragon Pokémon. Before you evolve it, go ahead and explore Hammerlocke with your Applin, there, you will find a character that is desperately looking for an Applin, if you trade him your Applin, you’ll unlock a cute and romantic cutscene, and best of all, you get your Pokémon back! Now, before evolving your Applin, you must decide if you want to go for attack or defense. If you choose to attack, you must give your Applin a Tart Apple, and it will evolve into Flapple. If you want defense, give your Applin a Sweet Apple, making it evolve into Appletun. If you think Applin’s evolutions look adorably delicious, just wait until you see its special transformation during Dynamax battles!

6. Dracozolt

To be fair, the 6th spot could have been split between all the fossil Pokémon: Arctozolt, Dracovish or Arctovish. They all have similar base stats and they are all unlocked the same way: find two different types of fossils in the Wild Area by either stumbling upon them or digging for them, then going to Route 6 and having them combined and restored to obtain an ancient Pokémon. Now, we chose Dracozolt because of its dual types, Electric and Dragon. The last time we saw a mix of Electric/Dragon-types was back in Gen. 5 with Zekrom, and we all know how well that combination worked out. If you’re lucky, your Dracozolt will have the Ability Volt Absorb, which will make it absorb any Electric-type attacks as HP. Can’t wait to get your hands on one of the coolest dragons of Gen. 8? Better save up and dig for the items Fossilized Bird & Fossilized Drake!

[ad_middle]

5. Hatenna

Ok, hear us out with this one… It surely does not look like a menacing Pokémon, we know, but have you tried attacking one of these? It sure looks fragile, but it’s amazingly sturdy for a Psychic-type. This little sleepy time Kirby-looking Pokémon is good in Dual Battles, as it can heal your allies or easily become annoying for the opponent with its parade of buffs and status inflicting abilities. Once you Confuse, Paralyze or Charm your opponent, you can easily take it down with Dazzling Gleam, good ole Psychic or help your team by... sacrificing yourself with a Healing Wish? Hatenna will evolve twice, once into Hattrem at level 32 then into Hatterene at level 42, becoming part of the Fairy-type family. By the time your Hatenna evolves into Hatterene, you’ll notice it’s strong fort is Special Attacks, especially the witch theme suiting attacks like Future Sight. Next time you’re adventuring around the Wild Area, keep an eye out for that tiny pink hat running around the grass! You won’t regret catching one!

4. Cufant

[sourceLink asin="B082FV7QG1" asin_jp="" bookwalker_id="" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]

Cufant is the first 8th generation Pokémon we see when starting the game. You can find the pure steel Pokémon, Cufant, near Bridge Field in the Wild Area. For being a Steel-type, it does not learn too many Steel moves on its own by leveling up, however, its incredibly high base attack of 80 points makes any of its physical attacks a brutal blow. Cufant evolves into Copperajah at just level 33, giving it over hundred-twenty points in both base HP and Attack, making it your go-to offensive war machine. At this point, a Copperajah with the ability Heavy Metal would make it the heaviest Pokémon in the game, making the attack Heavy Slam a deadly move against any opponent.

3. Toxel

Toxel is as adorable as it is strong. You can catch it starting from Route 7, and when you do, make sure you get one with the ability Static, a handy way to inflict the Paralysis status on your opponent’s Pokémon. Toxel’s greatest strength is it’s base Special Attack, starting at 54 points. With this in mind, your best bet is teaching it attacks like Acid, Belch or Round until you can evolve it into Toxtricity at level 30. As it evolves, it keeps it’s Electric/Poison-types, but can now learn a wider range of strong attacks by leveling up, like Poison Jab, Boomburst, and Overdrive. Toxel’s evolution has one of the coolest looking Dynamax transformations, but outside of the Raid Battles, Toxel can evolve into two different looks: Amped Form and Low Key Form. Which Toxtricity form did you end up adding to your party?

2. Chewtle

[sourceLink asin="B082FXTR3C" asin_jp="" bookwalker_id="" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]

If you didn’t catch a Chewtle back in Route 2, we strongly recommend to go back and get one. This Pokémon will be the strongest you’ll catch right at the beginning of the game. It starts with really high base defense and attack (50 and 64 respectively), the same, if not better base stats than your 8th Gen starters. Wild Chewtles come with really useful abilities, those being Shell Armor - which makes it impossible to land a critical hit on Chewtle, or Strong Jaw - 50% more power for your biting moves. Chewtle and its evolution are available in the wild in a lot of places, but it’s fairly easy to evolve it to Drednaw at level 22. Getting yourself a Drednaw early on in the game will be essential, as technically it’s only real weakness will be x4 versus Grass-types, and everything else is just a tickle to its massive HP and defense base stats of 90. Oh, did we mention it has one of the coolest looking Dynamax transformations? Be sure to check it out!

1. Dreepy

Dreepy is a cute little Ghost/Dragon Pokémon that reminds us of Rayquaza. Although it’s certainly a dragon, it’s nowhere near a legendary Pokémon, however, it’s designed for greatness. You can find Dreepy early on in the game, roaming around the Wild Area near Route 5. Once you encounter it, make sure to catch it, as this little guy is versatile and strong. It starts with low HP, but with a base attack of 60 and a speed of 82, you’ll start to notice why we placed Dreepy first on our list. From the wild, Dreepy has Ghost, Normal, Bug and Dark-type attacks, but you can teach it the powerful Draco Meteor from the Move Tutor right away. Leveling up Dreepy might be challenging - but worth it - as it’s second evolution, Drakloak, is at level 50, then it’s last stage, Dragapult, evolves at level 60. On its last evolution, it will be able to learn a variety of powerful attacks like Giga Impact, Hydro Pump, Thunderbolt and many others. Don’t miss out on training the best Dragon Pokémon of the 8th generation!

Final Thoughts

A lot of Pokéfans are distracted by the lacking features of Pokémon Sword and Shield, so after a week or two from the game’s release date, it’s rare to see any outstanding 8th Gen. Pokémon being used in online Link Battles, let alone worthy enough mentions to claim a top 10 strongest list; unfortunately, Gen. 8 Pokémon just fall really short compared to previous generations. With that aside, we hope this list shines a light on those trainers out there that are yet to settle on 8th Gen. members for their competitive fights team. We hope to hear your thoughts in the comment section below. Good day, gamers!

Who it Caters to

Dream Detective caters to a wide age range. Its content is okay for kids, but can still be enjoyed by adults. That makes the game especially great to play as a family with everyone searching for items together to progress. Dream Detective can also be enjoyed alone too, of course, catering especially to lovers of puzzle games. Players that love hidden item books, puzzles, and other games like it, will get the most out of Dream Detective. The majority of the gameplay is finding hidden items, so people that like that kind of puzzle are who the game was made for. Dream Detective also caters to more casual gamers and serious gamers that want something more laid back to play. There are timed levels to add some pressure but overall the game can be played at your own pace. There’s little pressure of losing, and it’s meant to just be fun. The art is all hand-drawn and painstakingly detailed, so it’s meant to be enjoyed and not breezing through quickly. Dream Detective caters to players that want a game that they can pick up and play casually, being entertained without being stressed.

What to Expect

The game is set in Dream Land, and it’s up to you (as detective Allie) to restore order and peace to a land in chaos. You do so by finding specific pictures across elaborate scenes, opening new worlds to explore and clearing stages. You can expect hours of searching for some really challenging hidden pictures across countless pieces of hand-drawn art. You can also expect to find plenty of surprises and laughs amongst all the details because on top of the items you’re searching for there’s plenty more to see!
[ad_top2 class="mt40 mb40"]

Story

In Dream Detective, you play as a woman named Allie, who is indeed a detective. Her normal life is turned upside down when on an otherwise Tuesday afternoon, she finds herself in Dream Land. While this world at first seems whimsical and fantastic, Allie soon discovers a much darker truth. Beneath the surface, Dream Land is extremely unstable. The previous Time Crystal that holds time in check has been destroyed by thieves! Allie takes it upon herself to try to restore the peace and stability to Dream Land, and save the land from the plague of nightmares that have taken over. The story in Dream Detective is told through thousands of lines of dialogue and interaction with a huge array of diverse characters. The choices that you make shape the future of Dream Land, and you can uncover countless secrets along the way. It’s up to you to repair Dream Land and fix the bridge between imagination and reality!

Gameplay

Dream Detective is a hidden item’s game, so the majority of gameplay involves searching through elaborate artwork to find specific items hidden within it. The artwork is all hand-drawn and extremely detailed, which makes the game challenging but also entertaining as you discover the secrets hidden on each level. There are many worlds in Dream Land to explore and help, and you can choose your difficulty from easy, medium, and hard for each world. There are also different game modes to pick from, which is especially appealing for people that want to play again but with a different kind of challenge. In addition to the hidden items gameplay, you also have your own castle to restore and customise within Dream Detective. You use items and gold you find in the other levels to upgrade the castle and have choices about exactly how you customise it every step of the way. It lets you make a castle that is catered to your taste! This part of Dream Detective is optional, so you can design the castle all you want if you feel like it. But if it’s not your style, you can just focus on the main narrative and hidden items gameplay. It’s up to you.
[ad_middle class="mt40 mb40"]

Honey's Gameplay Consensus:

Dream Detective is a game with a lot of personalities. It’s fun to play, engaging, challenging, and beautiful. It has enough details to keep you entertained and never bored, and lots of different gameplay modes so there’s a little something for everyone. The game is advertised for all ages and has nothing that is inappropriate for kids while still being fun for adults, too. While there are a few downsides (most of which we feel could be fixed with a few patches from the creators, if they chose to), overall we were pleased with what we got in Dream Detective.

Honey's Pros:

  • Dream Detective is an incredible value for its price. The game is very cheap but offers well over 20 hours of gameplay, and even more if you’re looking to reach 100% completion.
  • You can stare at one scene for a long time and still notice new details, jokes, surprises, and more. Dream Detective has so much thought in its art!
  • The ongoing feature of building your own castle is really fun. It lets you collect pieces and renovate alongside the normal gameplay—but there is also zero pressure to do so if you don’t want to, and you aren’t punished for not doing it.
  • Your avatar is also super customisable with hundreds of different outfits to choose from.

Honey's Cons:

  • Dream Detective doesn’t explain all the intricacies of how to play as the game becomes more difficult. For example, you can click to enter some new areas or zoom in on some places—but not in the tutorial, and those features are never actually explained.
  • For a game marketed as “from ages 0 to 100,” some of the text clues are incredibly difficult to understand, or very vague. It’s discouraging for younger gamers if they want to play (and some adults too).
  • There are a lot of timed levels that cannot be skipped or avoided if you want to finish the main story. Timed levels are something that appeals to some, but certainly not everyone, so having so many mandatory ones isn’t a great feature.
  • Some of the background music gets very old and repetitive and isn’t always cut together smoothly. There’s no way to turn just the music off without muting the whole game, either.

Honey's Final Verdict:

Dream Detective is a fun game for all ages. It’s especially great for families to play together letting kids and or siblings work together as a team to find all the hidden items. But of course, it’s also perfectly fine for adults to enjoy on their own, too! It’s whimsical, beautiful, and intriguing with a little bit of pressure and challenge to sometimes keep you on your toes. Dream Detective is an especially good value for your money, costing very little for a long, fulfilling puzzle game experience. If you’re looking for a game to play with your kids or little sibling, or just something to help you relax and casually play when you feel like it, Dream Detective is more than worth the price. Have you played Dream Detective or were you considering picking it up? How did you find it if you did play? Do you agree with our opinions? How likely are you to buy the game now and give it a try? Do you have any advice for others that may be considering picking it up? Drop us a comment before you leave!

Ikemen Vampire: Temptation in the Dark - Opening Movie

Who it Caters to

Ikemen vampire is an easy to download phone game that can run on almost any smartphone thanks to its simple demands. The Ikemen series may appeal to fans of Diabolik Lovers or other reverse harem titles. It is also designed to be exclusively available for mobile devices, making it good for quick reads during your commute or wind downtime at the end of the day. The story is broken up into small chunks that are easy to speed through if you often find yourself with small amounts of time in between activities. If you like vampire-centric stories, then you might enjoy this game.

What to Expect

Ikemen Vampire is an otome game that is targeted towards fans of pretty boy otome games. The game isn't made to be innovative or tell an award-winning story to its players. Instead, it's designed as an easy to access otome game that lures you in with free play tickets and ease of download. If you've played other games from the Ikemen series, then you probably have a decent idea of the quality of the game. We will say that this is probably the weakest story out of the Ikemen franchise.
[ad_top2 class="mt40 mb40"]

Story

You play as a young journalist who is touring the Louvre in France for the first time. While staring at paintings, a mysterious gentleman approaches you to return your eating. You immediately notice how stunning the man is, and through a chain of events, your character quickly ends up wandering into a storage room, she mistakes as an exhibit. The door shuts behind her locking her in, and she wanders toward opening another door that leads her into a well-lit hallway. She notes that the hallway looks nothing like that of the Louvre and ponders whether she has somehow wandered Into someone's mansion. Soon enough, she spots the man that returned her eating, and upon nothing her, he grabs her hand. The man exclaims to the player that they need to leave now before another mysterious man appears who seems more menacing. After some strange dialogue, a butler approached the group insisting that you've been invited to dinner with the master of the mansion, and you must attend. The main character is forced to accept the invitation and is soon led to a dining room full of gorgeous men. As she sits down at the table, the men each begin to introduce e themselves. As it turns out, they are all famous figures from history like Beethoven, Napoleon, and Issac Newton. The main character quickly learns that all the men before her have come from different points in time to the mansion. To top it all off, the portal she used to get there has now closed, and it will be a month before it reopens. With an agreement to help the mansions butler, and the knowledge that everyone around you is a vampire, it's time to choose the man you will fall in love with. Character List: Napoleon Bonaparte Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Leonardo Da Vinci Arthur Conan Doyle Vincent Van Gogh Theodorus Van Gogh Osamu Dazai Isaac Newton Jean D'Arc William Shakespeare Comte de Saint-Germain Sebastian

Gameplay

The gameplay of Ikemen Vampire is a bit convoluted and confusing at times. The game only allows you to pick from four members of the cast to romance, and the UI is a mess that is hard to navigate through. Especially as a first-time player. The game has card battles, avatar dress up, and a gacha machine that you will all need to interact with in order to make it through the story. You will also learn that you can only read five chapters for free a day, which is a lot stricter of a rule than it initially sounds To begin with, you are awarded 5 chapter tickets each day. These tickets can be used to unlock the next part of your story. The only catch is that the chapters are extremely short, ranging from one to three minutes per read. On average, we could get through an entire story segment in 5 to 10 minutes easy. Most of the story is also heavy filler, with the romance being lightly sprinkled in on occasion. Each character has 25 parts meaning you would have to check-in for 25 days in a row to get through the story if you somehow manage to beat the challenges without spending money. Additionally, you should note that you can't check in every day to save up story tickets. The game is wired only to allow you to read five chapters a day and won't supply you with more than five tickets at a time. The first challenge you will come across is the card battle. The battle system is crudely explained and heavily relies on you getting premium cards from the gacha machine to build your team. Every story will have several checkpoints in it that require you to win around three consecutive care battles to progress to the next chapter. The second challenge will have you using in-game items also won from the gatcha to feel an affection meter. The third will have you dressing up your avatar to when fashion points and progress the story. The catch is that if you don't have the premium avatar items purchased, you will only have access to the basic ending. The one standout of Ikemen Vampurs is the games art. The characters are beautifully drawn, with special attention paid to each boy's design. While the clothes aren't historically accurate, they capture each man's time period in a fashionable way that players are sure to love.
[ad_middle class="mt40 mb40"]

Honey's Gameplay Consensus:

Ikemen Vampire neither has a strong UI or story. The menus are messy, making it a painful chore to learn where everything is. Even navigating the premium store feels very rigid. The cost of diamonds, the premium in-game currency, is higher than most other otome games we've encountered. You can expect to spend around $20 on each story, thanks to the number of gacha tickets; you will need to progress through the game's unpleasant challenges. To top it all off, the story is not for history buffs as the characters aren't like their historical counterparts in the slightest. I'd you're looking for historical influenced romance, then this isn't the game for you. Likewise, as mentioned above, the story isn't very deep even when presented with moments where the writers could have really delved into the backstory or padded the plot. To top it all off, the gatcha, dress-up, and card battles are all additional features that could have been fun extras for the players but ended up becoming a way for the game to siphon money from the pockets of the players. If there was at least an option to outright buy charter stories for a set fee instead of just having a currency system, then Ikemen Vampire would probably have done across as much more appealing to play through. In addition, many of the characters have side stories or side stories. These short stories all have to be paid for by the player in order to access them. This easily make the price jump to around $30 to $40 for a full run of each vampire. At around 12 characters, the game becomes more expensive than most acclaimed Otome games on the market with a smaller amount of actual story content. Even the daily check-in rewards will do little to make the games cost easier on your wallet. The game will let you complete offers for premium currency at a low rate. Watching a video only awards you one diamond and even paid offers, not you a smaller amount of currency then you'd find in similar games. These offers are long and tedious and aren't worth the payout.

Honey's Pros:

  • Dazzling Art Work and Character Designs

Honey's Cons:

  • Costly Currency System With No Way To Buy Individual Stories.
  • Mediocre Story Line and Character Development
  • Confusing UI

Honey's Final Verdict:

Sadly, unless your willing to spend money on Ikemen Vampire or have a month's worth of patience, you won't make it through even one story. We also can't say that you're going to find much excitement outside of your run of the mill budget otome game. If you're looking for a robust story that will take a few days to get through, we recommend Mystic Messenger, where the wait times for completing the free story make perfect sense. Ikemen Vampire is a budget otome game that could be enjoyable if they concentrated less on paid content and more on making the players want to purchase the stories.

Vampire: The Masquerade - Coteries of New York - PC (Steam) Review

Vampire: The Masquerade - Coteries of New York - Gameplay Trailer

Who it Caters to

Coteries of New York is a Visual Novel based on Vampire: The Masquerade, one of the most famous and interesting pen-and-paper role-playing games. In fact, it refers to several elements from New York by Night, one of the novels based on the Vampire: The Masquerade mythos. In this universe, vampires are real and have lived among us since time immemorial; however, they need a set of rules to avoid being discovered and slain, and so The Masquerade was born. If you like vampires, you definitely need to know about Vampire: The Masquerade, a franchise that captivates you thanks to the credibility of its stories. Because yes, we all know this is just a game and vampires don't exist... but what if that's what they want us to believe and we're being tricked by the Masquerade?

What to Expect

Although a lot of games about vampires are fast-paced adventures or even shooters, and even if tabletop RPG games like Dungeons & Dragons involve a lot of action, Vampire: The Masquerade is all about the narrative. Of course, you can be more aggressive and play your character as you want, but in the end, any vampire will live longer if it remains in the shadows. That's probably why the visual novel genre fits the Vampire: The Masquerade franchise so well, and the reason why almost every fan of the saga wondered why there was no visual novel based on it. In this game, you play as a newly-created vampire who knows nothing about this secret society or the imposing rules to which they are subject. After being saved from Final Death and adopted by Sophie Langley of the Tremere clan, you're nothing but a slave trying to find your own place in the night... but will you be able to survive it?
[ad_top2 class="mt40 mb40"]

Visuals

If there's one thing we love about this game, that has to be the visuals. Beautifully illustrated by Rafał Gosieniecki and Filip Odzierejko, Coteries of New York is a game that makes it extremely easy to immerse yourself in the distressing environments of this version of New York and get carried away by the story and its characters. Although it's not hyperrealistic, it is realistic enough to help you take the characters seriously, something that differs a lot from other generic anime-style novels. The menus are simple enough—just like the gameplay—and you can adjust the text options for better reading. Also, we recommend activating the background animations, which always deserve a good pause to fully appreciate them.

Sound,Music

Along with the visuals, the other highlight of Coteries of New York is the soundtrack. For obvious reasons, the music in a visual novel has to be calm enough not to distract the reading, but powerful in terms of setting the mood. In this case, every piece of music deserves your attention as they perfectly fit the general tone of the game. Unfortunately, this game does not include voice acting, something that would have earned even more points to this spectacular sound section.

Gameplay

You start the game as either a Ventrue female or a Brujah/Toreador male, and even though you can choose your name, those 3 are the only playable classes. For those who have played any V:TM game before, gender-locking and the absence of customization no doubt will feel like the biggest problem, especially once you discover how structured Coteries of New York is for a series known for giving absolute freedom to its players. Another negative aspect for those who are not new to V:TM is that the whole narrative of Coteries of New York revolves around being a fledgling that knows nothing about the Masquerade, ultimately being used as a pawn while the big fishes plot everything from the shadows; a cheap resource for a V:TM campaign that has been done to death.
Just like with every visual novel, the gameplay is pretty simple: the story is told through small bits of text that appear in the lower-left corner, sometimes from the narrator's point of view—while it describes your situation—and sometimes thanks to interacting with other characters. When the time is right, some dialog options appear in the lower-right corner, and there you can choose how your character behaves in certain situations. In this game, 2 forces are always influencing your next move: one is the Masquerade, and the other is politics. Since you're a vampire, you need to drink blood... but you also need to respect the Masquerade if you don't want any trouble. If you drink too much and go on a killing spree, you lose humanity and sooner than later you'll look like a monster, unable to hide your true self and walk the streets as a human would. If you don't drink blood and the Beast inside of you awakens, you can be sure the Masquerade will be broken and everyone around will know about your vampiric nature. From a gameplay perspective, respecting the Masquerade is what ultimately defines what dialogue options are better than the others, and when ignoring your appetite looks like a better option than jumping over that poor guy walking alone at night, piercing his neck with your fangs. As soon as your new sire Sophie Langley gives you a little freedom, she'll encourage you to form your very own coterie, recruiting some other vampires to your cause... if you know how to play your cards. In our first run, we went for Hope the Malkavian (a crazy social media addict) and D'Angelo the Nosferatu (a freelance detective), but your other options are Agathon the Tremere and Tamika the Gangrel. Gaining their trust is a big part of Coteries of New York's story, but unfortunately, you never really get to understand what it really means to be in a coterie because of how short the game is, and how abrupt the ending feels.
[ad_middle class="mt40 mb40"]

Honey's Gameplay Consensus:

With only around 10 hours of gameplay, and with no significant changes to the ending no matter what route you follow, Coteries of New York feels like a grenade that explodes too soon. One moment you feel captivated by these characters and their backgrounds, and a few minutes later you're staring at the screen while the credits are rolling, and the ending itself feels nowhere near satisfying. However, the Dictionary feature and the fascinating lore behind Vampire: The Masquerade make of Coteries of New York a more than decent entry point to the franchise, leading to many of you reading the novels or recruiting a group of friends for a good session of tabletop role-playing. In fact, It's always a good time to go back to playing Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines (available on Steam), especially now that Bloodlines 2 is just around the corner!

Honey's Pros:

  • It’s a more than decent entry point for those new to Vampire: The Masquerade and the World of Darkness’ lore.
  • The art is gorgeous, and the soundtrack remains true to the sounds we have fallen in love with in previous games.

Honey's Cons:

  • Although you feel like your decisions really matter... they don't.
  • For those who already experienced a Vampire: The Masquerade campaign before, the whole fledgling plot may come as dull.
  • More endings and playable clans would’ve been a nice touch.

Honey's Final Verdict:

To be honest, we love Vampire: The Masquerade, and maybe that’s why we’re so torn about Coteries of New York. One the one hand, a lot of elements here feel exactly as they should, and we’re sure a lot of new players will fall in love with the lore behind this saga. On the other hand, the unsatisfying ending and the lack of freedom definitely spoil the experience to those who already know how it feels to participate in a good Vampire: The Masquerade campaign.

Discussion Time

Just as we thought folks! Our kids may have won a big victory for humanity in the demon world but their battle is only nearing the climax now. In chapter 161 of Yakusoku no Neverland, we learn that Norman’s base was indeed hit by a surprise attack and it came from none other than the Ratri leader and his 2000 soldiers. Besides the fact that these demon warriors are literally huge—easily some of the bigger demons we’ve seen—those who didn’t perish and were able to escape learned their friends were taken away. Where you may ask? Simple, back to Grace Field House! Ray and Norman are almost momentarily paralyzed by this news but Emma shows her fortitude and almost shrugs the news off as if it was no big deal. With a plan to rescue the base’s members and those our trio left behind long ago, the team decides to venture back to where it all started. What awaits our children in what most likely will be the final battleground for the series? Let that anticipation flood your senses readers as next week can’t come any sooner and we’re truly excited to see the climactic war that’s been far too long coming. In the meantime, here’s why you can’t pass up this amazing chapter of Yakusoku no Neverland!

1. One Victory, One Draw

Emma, Ray, and Norman have all dealt a decisive blow against the demons by killing their queen but the victory celebration was cut a bit short. News of Norman’s base being attacked reaches our kids and while they didn’t seem to suffer any losses—as far as we know—it can be considered a draw seeing as how they have them hostage. However, the biggest surprise of chapter 161 of Yakusoku no Neverland wasn’t in the base’s surprise attack but where the survivors were taken…

2. Returning to Grace Field House!?

It has been easily 100 chapters since we last saw our kids fight to escape their doomed fates. Now, Emma, Ray, and Norman must venture back home with their new allies to save those left behind and those taken against their will to this false looking paradise. What nightmares await in the grand finale? We have some thoughts as always but we’ll only truly know in 7 more days…

Final Thoughts

Yakusoku no Neverland 161 has set the final stage for our kids. Despite their desperate attempts to escape the hell that was their former orphanage, this return was destined. Many kids were left behind in order for the stronger/older to escape and they have been waiting patiently for rescue. The question now though is what awaits our warriors as they return to Grace Field House? Comment below with some thoughts and we shall see if your theories were close or not in chapter 162! Riho Iida, worldwide known voice actress, recognized for her role as Rin Hoshizora of “Love Live!”, has officially published her photo book titled,” Riho Iida 20th Anniversary PHOTOBOOK" Eien to Issyun<Eternity and Moment>"”. Before pursuing her career as a voice actress, she appeared as a child actor in “Tensai TV Kun”, a famous program for children. This photo book contains many dialogues with Noshino Nanjo (as Eli Ayase) who co-starred in "Love Live!". "I became a voice actress so quickly. When I was in a difficult position, Noshino gave me advice as a voice actor, and soon after the life of a voice actress became fun. After the final live of “Live Live!” at Tokyo Dome in 2016, we have rarely had the chance to work as μ’s. We included stories from those days. It's a very warm conversation. ", she said. The shoot took place in September in Da Nang and Hoi An, Vietnam's resorts. The moment she arrived in Vietnam, she was measured in order to make her own Ao Dai. Around the day of the release, she held handshake meetings with her fans who had applied in advance. In Japan, meetings where voice actors shake hands with fans or hand over purchased goods in person are thus widespread. In Japan, it’s quite common that voice actors/actresses promote themselves in other avenues such as with photobooks. This photo contains wonderful images which include sexy swimwear, which pays homage to Riho’s previous photobook. All of this commemorates the 20th anniversary of the first photobook release.
