Ohayocon 2020 Post-Show Field Report

Website: ohayocon.org As a new decade dawns upon us, Ohayocon is ready to celebrate in style! This anime convention draws over 20,000 people to Columbus, Ohio to revel in all things nerdy for one fun-filled weekend in the doldrums of winter. We were on the scene for all three days of the con, so let’s see what Ohayocon had to offer this year!

Basic Info

When it was Established January 2001
Length of Event 3 days, January 10 – 12, 2020
Location Greater Columbus Convention Center in Columbus, OH
COST If you pre-register early enough, you can get a weekend pass for as little as $45. At the door, it’s $70 and cash only. Single-day passes are in the range of $20-40.
Hotels The convention center is physically connected to three hotels—the Hyatt Regency (where Ohayocon has a block of rooms), the Drury Inn & Suites, and the Hilton. But since it’s located downtown, there are other options nearby such as the Red Roof Inn Plus.
Event Message for Attendees Explore the natural beauty of anime with your cure for the wintertime blues!

What to Expect

Ohayocon has taken place annually for almost 20 years now so it’s a well-oiled machine at this point. Panel rooms are clearly marked, the scheduling app works well, and Accessibility Services makes sure that those with disabilities can easily navigate the spacious convention center. The venue itself has a food court with a variety of options, a convenience store stocked with any items you may have left behind (such as scissors for opening figure boxes or earplugs for that roommate who snores), and on-site police officers to make sure everything goes smoothly. If you have the energy to venture outside the convention center, Ohio’s capital city of Columbus is well worth exploring. Just across the street from the Hilton is North Market, an indoor food hall with warm bowls of ramen that can bring you back to life after a crazy weekend. And if you’re a crafter, the Joann Fabrics at Polaris Towne Center is one of the largest in the country and features an area to test drive sewing and embroidery machines!

What to Bring

Donations for the Manga Library – Ohayocon’s Manga Library and Maker Lab is only in its second year of operation, so its collection is pretty tiny. But if you have manga volumes, light novels, DVDs, or other nerdy literature lying around, you can donate it to the library in exchange for discounts on your next badge. With enough donations, you might even be able to get a free badge for next year! Ribbons to Trade – The ribbon game is a fun little “sidequest” that’s been popping up at conventions in recent years, and this is the first time it’s been listed as an official event at Ohayocon. You can design and order small badge ribbons to trade with other attendees, competing to get the most ribbons possible. And even if you don’t have the time or money to order ribbons, passing out small trinkets with your Instagram handle on them is a great way to participate in the game and spread your brand at the same time! Emergency Rations – Cons tend to be frenetic affairs, so normal routines for eating and sleeping get tossed out the window in favor of going hard all weekend long so you don’t miss any of the fun. However, you still need to eat, and the food court is often crowded, so it’s a smart idea to bring along “emergency rations” like protein bars and fruit for those times when you can’t spare a minute to sit down. Make sure these snacks are healthy, or else you’ll suffer from a sugar crash later on.

What to Do While There/What is Available

Dealer’s Room/Artist’s Alley – Our favorite part of any anime convention is the dealer’s room, where you can purchase all manner of nerdy figures, art, clothing, and assorted trinkets from your favorite series. One of the standouts this year was Ohio Kimono, which partnered with The Kawaii-est Little Stationery Store to bring a smorgasbord of imported Japanese and Korean paper products—the art nouveau-style stickers, in particular, are so gorgeous that it’s a wonder how affordable they are. Sorbet Jungle also made an adorable impression with its food/animal-themed products, our favorite being a set of “Crononana” plushies dangling from a banana hook that each come with their own adoption ceremony and certificate.

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="Blue Eclipse Drag Performance (@theartistisme)" url="" ]

Oriana Péron’s Drag Race and Show – Oriana Péron is an Indiana-based drag queen who hosts LGBT-themed panels and events at conventions throughout the Midwest. One of her more low-key affairs is a queer roundtable where anyone in the room can share their coming out stories or ask questions in a safe space. But if you want the full-on sequin-y experience, make sure you attend her drag race (a game show modeled after Ru Paul’s Drag Race) and the drag show (where local entertainers perform in cosplay). Blue Eclipse, the winner of the drag race, brought the house down with a strong performance as Lio Fotia from Promare! Caleb Hyles Sing-Along – YouTube singer Caleb Hyles is known for his Disney and anime covers, as well as his infectiously positive personality. His Saturday concert was a hit, but his Sunday sing-along warmed our hearts to the core. Karaoke can be stressful for introverts, so Caleb picked two fans from the audience to sing with him for each song and displayed the lyrics for everyone else. Even though the whole crowd was tired, we all joined in for a rousing rendition of “I’ll Make a Man Out of You” to close out the panel.

Cosplay

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="Lilith from Neon Genesis Evangelion (@flint_locke)" url="" ]

Since the new 20s began this year, Ohayocon got everyone in the spirit by theming itself as a celebration of the 1920s. We saw flappers, bootleggers, and other 20s-inspired versions of popular characters throughout the convention, some presented with a surprising amount of historical accuracy. Standbys like Boku no Hero Academia and Steven Universe ruled the halls and photoshoot areas, while a few retro shows like Fruits Basket finally saw some representation again due to their recent reboots. For pure craftsmanship and creativity, we have to single out Flint_locke for their stunning Lilith from Neon Genesis Evangelion. It’s a wonder how they managed to move at all in that get-up, but it was definitely worth it!

Final Thoughts

This mid-sized anime convention is the perfect escape from the post-holiday wintertime blues. Whether you’re here to cosplay, meet voice actors, play arcade games, or just people watch, Ohayocon is the nerdy getaway you can’t afford to miss! What did you think of our overview? Have you ever attended Ohayocon? What were your favorite events and cosplays this year? Let us know in the comments, and thanks so much for reading!

We love anime, that’s clear from the site’s name, right? One of the many reasons we love it so much happens to be how incredibly accessible it is now. While older otaku had to suffer through times when anime was only found in the form of VHS tapes, DVDs and the occasional televised broadcast, the […]

Ore wo Suki nano wa Omae dake ka yo (ORESUKI Are you the only one who loves me?) Introduction and Story

Ore wo Suki nano wa Omae dake ka yo—simplified to ORESUKI—follows the tale of a young high school student named Amatsuyu Kisaragi, or Joro as his friends call him. Joro has plenty of friends; from his bubbly childhood friend Hinata Aoi to his baseball hopeful best friend Taiyou Ooga or better known as Sun-chan. What Joro lacks is a girlfriend and that has made him believe he’s not the main star of this series—ORESUKI breaks the fourth wall a lot—to his dismay. However, one day during school, Joro is asked out by the student council president—Sakura “Cosmos” Akino—and Hinata! On different days Joro meets the two thinking these are dates but quickly learns the girls don’t want Joro but instead have their sights on Joro’s best friend Sun! Due to his kindness—Joro’s one major weakness—he decides to help both girls try to win Sun’s heart but quickly learns something is amiss about this whole situation! During his attempts at manipulating his friends—for various reasons we won’t spoil—Joro meets one more girl named Sumireko Sanshokuin—nicknamed Pansy—who has been watching (stalking) Joro for some time. Pansy then reveals to our secondary character that she is not in love with his best friend but loves him! ORESUKI then ends up becoming a strange web of love as various characters reveal their feelings for one another—Sun reveals to Joro that he likes Pansy and the girls begin falling for Joro—making this tale into a comedy unlike many others. Joro’s life gets even rougher as more women are added to his group of potential girlfriends and we begin to learn of nefarious plots from each girl to capture his heart. We won’t spoil the later episodes of ORESUKI—as you need to watch them for maximum enjoyment—but we will say this…ORESUKI becomes a series where love is indeed more painful than any other emotion to be had! Can Joro find his true destined love or will he fail and lose the true love of his life?

Why You Should Watch Ore wo Suki nano wa Omae dake ka yo (ORESUKI Are you the only one who loves me?)
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="ANZB-13301" text="" url="" ]

1. Harem Comedy at Its Finest

One of the best elements of ORESUKI hands down is how comedic each episode is from the first episode to the last. From simple ecchi comedy to the reappearance of a notorious bench—which some have dubbed as Bench-kun—ORESUKI nails the harem comedy without missing a beat. Never did we sigh or grow annoyed seeing similar jokes replayed as ORESUKI rarely relies on the same gag more than a handful of times.

2. Serious but Not Melodramatic

A big flaw of comedy like ORESUKI is when it tries to delve into the more serious tones. Thankfully, this series rarely ever felt melodramatic. ORESUKI explores friendships that are corrupted due to sharing a love for the same person and it never feels over the top or groan-inducing. ORESUKI stays close to the comedy element to avoid that unnecessary pitfall a lot of series fall into when trying to be drama-oriented.

3. Lovable Cast

From our main man Joro to the stalker-like Pansy, there isn’t a single character in ORESUKI that isn’t well done. Even Joro’s later possible love interests don’t end up getting underdeveloped but instead, fulfill their roles perfectly and only add more characters to laugh with. Most comedy series like ORESUKI have one character that makes you write ten-page long forum posts on—we’ve all done it—but this series isn’t one of them and that is truly an impressive feat.

[ad_middle class="mt40"]
Why You Should Skip Ore wo Suki nano wa Omae dake ka yo (ORESUKI Are you the only one who loves me?)

1. Needs More Ecchi?

This is going to sound strange but ORESUKI actually could have used a bit more fan service in our minds. There’s a joke in the earlier episodes where the series breaks the fourth wall and makes the statement that it used fan service to grab viewers but as the series progresses, the fan service kind of just goes away. Yes, you’ll get the occasional panty shot—usually from Joro’s childhood friend Aoi—but if you were tricked and wanted more fan service from ORESUKI, you might be a bit disappointed.

2. Ho Hum Animation

In our honest opinions, we don’t usually connect harem/romance/ecchi series with good animation. That being said, ORESUKI looks just okay and it feels more like an older series. The character models/expressions are perfectly fine but other elements such as the set pieces and more dramatic events don’t ever look that great. ORESUKI is an amazing series but the animation isn’t anything to write home about.

3. That Ending…

Alright, here’s where we will avoid spoiling ORESUKI completely but still talk about the ending a bit. ORESUKI’s ending eludes to a sequel or possible OVA but the way the episode ends is frustrating. We can’t argue it is going against the way the series is—as it again breaks the fourth wall to tell us this isn’t over—but having Joro possibly losing his “challenge” for Pansy’s heart just as the end credits hit leaves a sour taste in our mouths. Was it a horrible ending? No, it truly wasn’t a bad ending. Just don’t expect for the series to end on the same note as it began and expect that cliffhanger to hit you…hard!

Final Thoughts

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="VVCL-1548" text="" url="" ]

Ore wo Suki nano wa Omae dake ka yo reminded us of how funny harem-like series with romance/drama can be even now in 2019! With a strong cast, some laugh-out-loud moments and a truly great style, ORESUKI is a series we could watch again in a few months and find those same scenes just as funny later. If the series gets a proper season 2—or maybe OVA series—we will say ORESUKI is near-perfect but as is, ORESUKI just comes short of perfection thanks in large part to its ending. Still, we highly suggest checking out this wonderful anime by studio Connect and know many of you guys/girls will not be disappointed! For those who already have seen ORESUKI, comment below what you thought of the series! If you enjoyed this anime review we have plenty more to check out here at Honey’s Anime!

Are eSports a Fad? Or Is It Here to Stay?

25 years ago, people who enjoyed playing video games most likely dreamed of doing it for a living (most likely as a game tester), but the idea of competitive gaming being the equivalent to mainstream sports seemed impossible in those days. In the modern world, a teenager can win $3,000,000 in a Fortnite tournament thanks to the rise of eSports. As of 2015, “eSports” has become part of the mainstream lexicon. eSports are now influential to the point that it has been affected by political events (such as the Hong Kong protests), and it’s getting ESPN coverage! Naturally, eSports (as it was with poker, spelling bees, and mixed martial arts) has had its share of criticism regarding whether or not it should be considered a sport. While we’re not exactly here to argue whether or not eSports are an athletic competition, some would wonder if eSports events are just a fad, or are they here to stay?

Spectacle

Long before EVO (a competition for fighting games), League of Legends, Starcraft, and Overwatch, video game competitions still existed. Heck, there was even a movie about old school eSports called The Wizard, where a boy wins a Nintendo competition. As a matter of fact, The Wizard was inspired by the Nintendo Challenge Championship competitions that were initially held in Canada. However, those competitions were more akin to spectacles, as opposed to what we now call eSports. While players today can win anywhere between six- or seven-figure cash prizes in a Blizzard or Fortnite competition, in Nintendo’s first Worldwide Championship in 1990, first prize winners only got $250! Even before the Nintendo Worldwide Championship, there were other video game competitions dedicated to Space Invaders, Donkey Kong, and other arcade classics. In the early half of the 1990s, there were even game shows dedicated to video games such as Nick Arcade and the second season of Video Power. Of course, these were just for the fun of it and not intended to be something like a traditional sporting event. Since video game competitions were already in practice prior to modern-day eSports, it’s a sign that they’re by no means merely a fad.

South Korea

If we have anyone to thank for building eSports as we see it now, it certainly has to be South Korea due to their aggressive plans in providing quality internet connection. As a result of their net café culture that started at the turn of the millennium, eSports got its modern-day start as gamers there enjoyed competing in Starcraft. As those competitions instantly grew, the South Korean government began its own sanctioning body for such events. In recent years, other nations have started to recognize eSports competitors as legitimate athletes. The US has been issuing visas that are intended for athletes to eSports participants and Turkey’s Ministry of Youth and Sports issue licenses to such players as well. If it wasn’t for South Korea’s instant involvement in recognizing and officially sanctioning eSports, it would have probably taken another 10 or 20 years to get to where it is now. Even 20 years later, South Korea continues to be one of the leading nations in eSports.

Internet

As an extension to South Korea’s contributions, without the internet, eSports wouldn’t be where it is today. The internet has done an effective job of connecting gamers and helping amateur players organize their own personal events so they can hone their skills and still have fun. Not only do PCs and mobile devices have internet access, so do modern consoles, which allows the sport to grow. As long as the world has the internet, where players can connect, eSports are here to stay.

Final Thoughts

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="X4ZP-8" text="" url="" ]

As crazy as it sounds, the rise of eSports parallels the rise of mixed martial arts in North America in many unique ways. It’s ironic we bring this up because Chatri Sityodtong, CEO of the ONE FC MMA organization, is also promoting eSports. They both originated as novelty events, and not something in which its participants could pursue as a full-time career. As stated earlier, the cash prize for the first Nintendo World Championship was $250 (which equates to nearly $500 after inflation). How does this relate to MMA? For starters, did you know that former UFC Champion Forrest Griffin only made $100 in his debut fight? These days, athletes in both sports can get wild sponsorship deals and bigger cash prizes now that they have progressively grown and gained mainstream acceptance thanks to proper sanctioning and fan support on the internet. Like MMA, eSports are still in their infancy and here to stay. Just how other sports have their legends such as Michael Jordan, Muhammed Ali, Babe Ruth, Pele and so on, eSports also has their share of them. In the world of Street Fighter, there’s Daigo Umehara and thanks to him and many others, eSports are going to be around for a long time as they not only impress fans but bring in new ones as well. Considering how fast eSports has found ways to get organized and maintain its presence, it’s here to stay. Even if Overwatch and League of Legends lose their popularity, there will always be new games to take their place and keep eSports fresh.

Discussion Time

Sanda had a choice last week that could have not only doomed a whole entire planet but also Hachimaru and his allies. Thankfully, Sanda proved he’s not who he once was in this 32nd chapter of Samurai 8: Hachimaru Den. Told by Benki that Sanda was using his father’s sword—Ben is truly an evil dude—Sanda broke Ryu’s trap and surprised everyone via his action. In a strange twist, Ryu then turned his blade on Sanda but we learn quickly it was a ploy to get Ben shocked allowing the two to attack the giant together! The trap, in turn, is deactivated and our heroes begin to hear the alarm claxon that shows time is running out! Several samurai head towards the nuke’s control panel while Hachimaru and the others deal some seemingly fatal blows to Ben! Just as the final seconds ring on the warhead being launched, we see a hand reach out to the console at the two-second mark and then…NOTHING! That’s right folks, we must now wait two weeks—as Viz/Shonen Jump is getting the rest they need—before we learn if the warhead was turned off or not. Despite that painful cliffhanger, this week’s chapter of Samurai 8: Hachimaru Den was exciting and truly enjoyable. Here are a few reasons why you shouldn’t wait till the last second and check out chapter 32 for yourself!

Why You Should Read Samurai 8: Hachimaru Den (Samurai 8: The Tale of Hachimaru) Chapter 32

1. A Good Guy

We won’t lie, readers. There was a moment we worried that Sanda was going to go against his good nature and betray our heroes. Thankfully, Sanda proved us right—in that he is indeed a loyal warrior—and saved his friends/comrades! That dual slice by Ryu and him was so epic!

2. Two Seconds…MORE LIKE TWO WEEKS!

Samurai 8: Hachimaru Den pulled a sneaky stunt and we can’t hate it. Just as the final two seconds of the warhead were announced, the chapter ends leaving us wondering…WHAT HAPPENED!?!? We doubt the warhead will launch—this is a shonen after all—but you never know.

Final Thoughts

Samurai 8: Hachimaru Den 32 was an action-packed chapter that felt quick but fluid. Every panel counting down the warhead’s final launch sequence had something going on keeping us constantly feeling the timer. That is a truly rare feeling in the world of manga, conveying actual time with fictional time. That’s why chapter 32 of Samurai 8: Hachimaru Den was truly a great entry in this series. What did you think of this chapter? Do you feel it is weaker than the rest? Comment below to let us know. Dr. Stone Introduction

As you read this review, try to picture yourself just living out your daily routine. You get up, have breakfast, brush your teeth, take a shower, and enjoy the rest of your day. All of a sudden, you and everybody else (as in humans and some birds) turn into stone for the next 3,000+ years! During that period, the world naturally reverts back to its primitive state and modern society ceases to exist. As select members of humanity manage to free themselves from their petrified prisons after over 4 millenniums, they have to start back from square one. As for teenage science enthusiast Senkuu Ishigami, he’s doing the best he can with what mother nature has to bring back centuries of scientific advancements within a year! However, Tsukasa Shishio, a former up-and-coming teenage MMA fighter, opposes Senkuu’s plans for reviving everyone as he only wants to recreate a world for the youth. As a result, Senkuu and Tsukasa create their own respective “nations” and prepare for war.

Why You Should Watch Dr. Stone
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="crunchyroll" url="https://www.crunchyroll.com/dr-stone" ]

1. It’s Educational

For those that want an anime version of “Bill Nye: The Science Guy,” (while also mixing in a little “MacGyver”) Dr. Stone perfectly fits that bill! It teaches its audience how they can use the most primitive of materials to make modern-day conveniences. As we say in our title, this anime is about humanity having to reinvent the wheel times 100 billion! Within the course of a year, Senkuu manages to create a society that can use electricity and communications! Dr. Stone portrays how to make a light bulb, a waterwheel that produces electricity, and antibiotics that treat pneumonia! When it comes to the more complicated parts of a certain device or chemical, the series displays fun flow charts (accompanied by the explanations by Mecha Senkuu) on how it functions. Of course, there are some experiments portrayed in this series that you shouldn’t try at home!

2. Every Character Has a Role

As Dr. Stone’s story expands, so does its cast. What makes this anime captivating is that every character has a role to play. You see the positive influence Senkuu has on most of the people he encounters. Other key characters such as Kohaku, Chrome, and Kaseki all have something to contribute. The series gives each of these characters enough time to develop and for the audience to connect with them. One notable moment that demonstrates this is when Kaseki solidifies his friendship with Chrome and Senkuu as “science bros.”

3. The Antagonist Has Legitimate Motivations

While Tsukasa can be extreme with his methods (ie, breaking off the heads of people who are still petrified), he has legitimate reasons for only wanting to revive the youth. Through his back story, he shares how he was mistreated and abused by adults. In a way, the audience can interpret his motivations as a criticism of the elderly dominance in Japanese society, and how it negatively affects the modern-day youth of Japan.

[ad_middle class="mt40"]
Why You Should Skip Dr. Stone

1. Underused Antagonist

While we already know that Tsukasa is going to have a bigger role in season 2, in this installment, his presence is only in the first and last few episodes. Tsukasa is not only strong, he shows he’s as smart as Senkuu when it comes to science! This is demonstrated when he realized that a certain element found near hot springs could be used as gunpowder, and he immediately comes to that conclusion! The fact that he’s physically strong and scientifically aware makes him the ultimate antagonist, and it’s a shame that he’s underused throughout the series, but there’s season 2 to look forward to.

2. All About World Building

For those of you who don’t like anime that relies on world-building, then this season of Dr. Stone is probably not for you. Most of this anime is all about world-building, but the situation portrayed in the story does a great job of justifying it. Even so, we understand there are viewers out there who aren’t into that kind of storytelling. We get that it slows things down so if you want something a little more fast-paced, this probably isn’t for you.

Final Thoughts

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="viz" url="https://www.viz.com/blog/posts/shonen-jump-new-chapters-10-27-19" ]

While we can’t ignore the notion that most of this series is just setting things up for Stone Wars, or season 2, the first season does an excellent job of introducing its core elements with its setting and characters. Not only is Dr. Stone a great story about survival and the joys of science, it’s also a touching story about friendship and community. Through the people of Ishigami Village, viewers can see that when everyone works together, they can accomplish great things and overcome any adversity.

Why We Can’t Wait for Ryu Ga Gotoku 7: Hikari to Yami no Yukue (Yakuza: Like a Dragon)

While an international release date for the seventh installment of Sega’s Yakuza franchise has yet to be announced (other than it’ll be released in 2020), we’re still a month away from its Japanese launch. With Kazuma Kiryu—the previous franchise protagonist—now “retired,” the upcoming seventh game is going to introduce a new lead, Ichiban Kasuga. In addition to a new main character, the series is getting another overhaul as it is forgoing its trademark combat system for a traditional turn-based J-RPG one. In addition to these new features, we’d like to share why we can’t wait for Ryu Ga Gotoku 7: Hikari to Yami no Yukue, otherwise known as Yakuza: Like a Dragon.

J-RPG Influences

We know that Ryu Ga Gotoku 7 becoming a J-RPG has been a controversy amongst its hardcore fans, but after reading and watching some interviews with the developers about why they decided to make such drastic changes, we’re willing to give it a chance. As portrayed in its recent demo, not only do you get to play as Ichiban but also the other characters in his party! Under the old engine, there are times when Kiryu gets to fight alongside his allies but in those instances, players only fight as Kiryu. Take for example, in the second Yakuza game, there are fights where Kiryu teams up with Kaoru, his love interest. Granted, players could do double teams against enemies, but they never get the option to play as Kaoru. We get that a good number of fans don’t mind that they didn’t have such options, but a J-RPG allows the opportunity to simultaneously control every character in the party, and exploit whatever skills they have throughout the battle. In previous interviews, Nagoshi and other staff members have stated that they wanted to make the seventh game an RPG in order to connect with its themes of friendship. When players start Ichiban’s quest, he’s a bum who was betrayed by the people he cared about. In order to stop whatever evil plot is happening, Ichiban knows he’ll need all the help he can get. Through a turn-based RPG system where characters must have each other’s backs, it gives players better opportunities to immerse themselves with the intended themes. Another theme that is expressed through the new RPG system is starting from the bottom and going to the top. Through grinding and leveling up, players can get a better feel of Ichiban’s journey as he becomes stronger to face whatever threats he has to stop and overcome his adversities.

Yokohama

In addition to Kamurocho (based on Kabukicho, one of Tokyo’s biggest red-light districts), other installments of Yakuza have also taken place in Osaka, Naha, Nagoya, Sapporo, Onomichi, and ancient Kyoto. As for the seventh game, it’s going to take our new heroes to Yokohama, which neighbors Tokyo. While Yokohama’s Chinatown has loosely been depicted in previous games through cutscenes, players are going to be treated to something a lot more comprehensive. For Ryu Ga Gotoku 7, players are going to get a virtual tour of downtown Yokohama as a whole! As portrayed in the demo, players can explore Hinodecho (Yokohama’s red-light district), Isezaki-Chojamachi (a trendy shopping district) and Jinnai Station, which is inspired by Kannai Station. As seen in the trailers, our heroes will also get to see Yamashita Park and the Sakuragicho area of downtown Yokohama. Producers have stated that the map of Yokohama is going to be three times bigger than Kamurocho, so players are going to get to see Yokohama’s famous sights such as Landmark Tower, the Red Brick Warehouse, and the Cosmo World amusement park!

Traditional Themes are Refreshed

Naturally, the Yakuza franchise portrays a gruesome world of money, power, and women, but it has also done an unorthodox job of glorifying Japan’s most notorious criminal organizations by presenting themes of honor and loyalty in its world. Naturally, Ichiban’s story is bound to bring new twists to it. Unlike Kiryu who can dodge bazooka missiles and take on 500 gangsters, Ichiban isn’t much of a badass and because he has spent most of his adult life in prison, he never had any chance to find out who he really is. As portrayed in the trailers, Ichiban shows he is loyal to his gang and is willing to take the fall for a fellow member. As a result, he spends the next 18 years in prison only to be betrayed upon his release. As a result, Ichiban has to start over with NOTHING, and how the player builds him up to becoming a (probable) savior by making new friends and finding legitimate ways to make money, helps refresh its themes. Through Ichiban’s viewpoint, who is more emotionally vulnerable than Kiryu, players are going to get a different idea of loyalty and brotherhood within the yakuza.

Final Thoughts

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="B07WZS3X28" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]

As we all know, Ryu Ga Gotoku 7 marks a new beginning of the series. However, as portrayed in recent trailers, certain characters are confirmed to come back so we know there’s a lot to look forward to. We understand that changes can be scary and unwanted, but sometimes, the things we don’t want can be better than what we were expecting. Ryu Ga Gotoku 7 isn’t ashamed to admit that it’s doing something different and after six games, a prequel, and four spin-offs, taking a different approach may help the franchise move forward and keep it fresh. If not, Sega has already admitted that it’s willing to go back to square one and bring back the old fighting engine. Other than that, we’re still excited about what Ryu Ga Gotoku 7 is bound to offer.

Retsuko is a young office lady who has to deal with a lot of unpleasantness in her work life. Unfortunately, any sort of backtalk or lashing out will lead to undesirable outcomes so she’s forced to bottle it all up. That is until she makes it to her favorite karaoke place where she can scream her grievances to death metal! Even the sweet, quiet ones have their limits. One fun thing about the characters of Aggretsuko is that everyone is an animal! The whole company is a zoo in more ways than one with hyenas, fennec foxes, pigs, gorillas, and more. Otherwise, it’s a pretty relatable show for working-age people about having to do more than their job requirements or having to stomach unfair treatment at the hands of their bosses. Even with its rather bleak premise, it’s quite funny. Poor Retsuko totally transforms from a mild-mannered lady to a vicious fighter once she gets her hands on the mic!

Once identifying as the Dark Flame Master in his middle school years, Yuuta has chosen to leave this all behind and start fresh at a high school far away from anyone who could know his dark secret. Still plagued by memories of his embarrassing behavior, Yuuta gets rid of any traces that would let others recognize his past chuunibyou, those delusions of dark powers. His past comes back to haunt him in the form of his new classmate Rikka who announces to the class that her cursed eye resonates at Yuuta’s presence. It seems like leaving his chuunibyou days behind won’t be so simple. While this show may not be directly relatable for everyone, most of us either were or know the person to skulk in the shadows and quote edgy books. It can be painful to see similar behavior acted out but it’s done in a fun and charming way. Yuuta is often brought to tears by his own childhood antics and yet he’s forced to babysit his chuunibyou neighbor Rikka who has no shame. Seeing the difference between the epic battles playing out in her mind with the reality of her sister beating her with a ladle is pretty great.

8. Nichijou (Nichijou – My Everyday Life)

In the everyday lives of high school girls Mio, Yuuko, and Mai, things are constantly catching them off guard. Even the child-professor and robot living nearby have a hard time keeping up with the various violent and sassy animals in their town. Even trying to study for (or skipping out on) a test can prove to be a harrowing experience. No matter what happens, though, they still keep looking forward to the next day! Nichijou is misleading in that is sounds like it would be a pretty normal slice of life anime when, in reality, it’s a barely coherent timeline with crazy scenarios held together only by the different characters meeting and recognizing each other later on. Otherwise, the events seem incredibly random and you can pretty much enjoy the episodes in any sequence as much as you would watching in chronological order. You can’t help but laugh at the conclusions the girls come to when faced with even the most mundane obstacles. When the talking cat tends to be the one that makes the most sense, you know you’re in for a weird time.

7. Shoukugeki no Souma (Food Wars! Shokugeki no Soma)

Boys become men when they no longer live in their father’s shadow, and that’s the goal of Souma Yukihara to become a chef that even rivals his legendary dad. So determined is he that Yukihara enters the Tootsuki Culinary Academy. Saying the produce the world’s top chefs would be an understatement; the graduates are near cooking gods. Famous for their Food Wars, where students battle for supremacy, spices are their weapons, ingredients are their tools, and cooking utensils are their shields in these high-stake battles. With so many first-years dropping out, can Yukihara survive to be in the 10% that make it to graduation? If you think that an anime about cooking couldn’t hold your attention, you’d be wrong. Everything from the varied characters, beautiful artwork, and ridiculous reactions to good food can easily keep you entertained. It’s amazing how a show can be both so educational and yet so stupidly funny. Every taste-test is like an acid trip with people turning into vegetables or skinny-dipping in a pot of soup. There’s a lot of ecchi hilarity over the inappropriate but entertaining three seasons.

In Ente Isla, hordes of demons begin taking over under the command of Lord Satan. Against all odds, the hero Emelia uses all of her strength to force the demon and his right-hand man Ashiya to flee. They manage to escape immediate danger but find themselves in the mortal realm of Earth where their powers are severely weakened! Being a demon king doesn’t pay the bills so Satan, now known as Sadao, takes up a part-time job at the fast-food chain MgRonalds. Few things are funnier than a once-powerful, sadistic person being forced into a role of servitude. It’s especially funny seeing how Sadao and Ashiya try to fit in and understand the humans’ ‘strange ways’. Things that are quite normal for us bring forth great interest and sometimes fear for our demon cast. Things get even better when Emelia immerges from Ente Isla and is torn between needing to fit in and her desire to destroy the now part-time-employed Lord Satan.

Pathetic recluse Kazuma died as he lived; only thinking about gaming. When he arrives before the goddess Aqua, he’s given the choice between going to heaven or begin reincarnated in a medieval fantasy realm much like the kind of games he plays. He is only allowed to bring one thing with him and he all too readily chooses both the fantasy reincarnation and to bring Aqua herself! Unexpected complications arise for both of them as Aqua’s powers are weakened and IRL adventures are a lot more exhausting than computer adventures! KonoSuba takes what would seem like simple fantasies and makes them near burdens. A beautiful fantasy world? There’s no tutorial and the weak get pushed around. Beautiful goddess accompanying you? She’s super weak now and is quick to throw you under the bus! New comrades? A chuunibyou that can attack once before passing out and a masochist for a knight… You can’t even feel that bad for Kazuma, though, because his immediate example of equality is getting to hit his female friends.

Yakuza member Nitta may not be in the high ranks, but he’s respected for his hard work and loyalty to the family. He finds himself in a different family dynamic when a young alien girl crashes into his home. Hina has little to say and doesn’t emote but reveals that her incredible powers will become unstable without proper use. Not wanting her to become the weapon she was created to be, Nitta ends up watching over her. Trying to maintain his image as a productive member in the yakuza while raising a little kid is a tall order when the kid could also wipe out the city. Hinamatsuri is a great anime because it manages to be unbelievable, hilarious, and sobering at different parts. You might not think there could be a relatable message in a show about a yakuza dad with an alien girl but there are times you’ll be shocked at the sobering reality they discuss. Then it’s back powerful aliens playing children’s games and a guy desperately trying to account for the needs of a young girl and it’s great fun.

3. Saiki Kusuo no Ψ-nan (The Disastrous Life of Saiki K.)

Saiki is a gifted child but in his eyes, he’s cursed. His amazing powers of telepathy, teleportation, and telekinesis would make his life easier if he didn’t have to try so hard to keep them a secret from everyone else. He tries to keep others at arm’s length but he seems to naturally draw to people to him. What a difficult life Saiki leads! With only 5 minutes an episode, it’s easy to get lost watching Saiki. Despite, or maybe because Saiki is such a stoic character, it’s a hilarious show. You’d think the kid with superpowers would be the one doing the unbelievable stuff but instead, it’s the school idol that’s too into herself, the chuunibyou that won’t shut up, and the empty-headed yankee-looking dude that acts like a puppy that make you question what you just saw and heard. Seeing a way over-powered kid try his best to do things in the most normal way possible is pretty funny when all his less-impressive fellow students are so unrestrained.

The Matsuno sextuplets may be identical (and similarly avoidant of responsibility) but they are quite different individuals! It’s a shame for their parents that not one is cut out for adult life. Osomatsu, Karamatsu, Choromatsu, Ichimatsu, Jyuushimatsu, and Todomatsu live their lives following their passions like petting cats and playing games and genuinely avoiding real work. However, avoiding work can be a real job itself! In a show where the characters’ situations and even histories are constantly changing in the most bizarre ways, the only real constants are the sextuplets’ characters. They may have similar goals they strive for together but they often diverge on how to get there in the most ridiculous ways. Nothing is off-limits from jokes about masturbation, hitting children, and even incest. Common decency be damned, and you’ll definitely find something new to laugh about if you’ve grown tired of more run-of-the-mill comedy

1. Gintama’

Yorozuya members Gintoki, Shinpachi, and Kagura will take any odd job that comes their way and as such have created quite a reputation for themselves. That is until Shinpachi returns after their one-year hiatus only to discover the others have completely changed. In fact, all the residents of Edo seem to be entirely different. Shinpachi nearly loses hope when he finds his older sister pregnant and married to the masochistic stalker she would normally beat up. When things are already completely backward, Shinpachi does the only nonsensical thing that makes sense; he turns to the Shinsengumi for help. We wanted to stick to this last decade but even if you didn’t watch the first Gintama, you’ll catch up quite quickly. Shinpachi does a good job recounting the plot even though Gintoki and Kagura give him crap for trying. With a series that’s constantly breaking the fourth wall and using references from other anime for gags, it’s hard to tell that anything is even terribly different in the first episode for a while. With new characters and new dangers, it’s the same old unpredictable Gintama that will keep you laughing through the decade!

Final Thoughts

Animation has the freedom to more easily explore controversial and downright impossible scenarios that live-action shows often can’t match. The best comedy is unpredictable and we can clearly see that on our list. Nichijou and Aggretsuko might be a little more easy to watch and appeal to a younger demographic and when it comes to shows like Osomatsu-san and Gintama’, we’d recommend not watching in public or being faint of heart! Whatever your fancy, we hope you laugh long and hard to these top 10 best comedy anime of the 2010s! If you feel there are other anime deserving of recognition, please leave a comment with your suggestion!

DRAGON BALL Z: KAKAROT - Launch Trailer

Who it Caters to

We have had a lot of Dragon Ball related games over the decades. Some have been truly amazing—such as the recent Dragon Ball FighterZ—and others have been extremely poor…Dragon Ball GT: Final Bout for example. However, the RPG focused Dragon Ball games have all been mediocre, to say the least so when Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot was announced don’t blame us for being a bit hesitant. Instead of a 2D fighter or 3D brawler, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is an action/RPG where you control Goku and other Z fighters as they journey through the numerous arcs of the Dragon Ball Z series. Is Goku’s latest new adventure worth plunging into or does it fall victim to being yet another stale RPG? We find out in our full review of Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot for the PS4!

What to Expect

For the first time ever, players get to experience the world of Dragon Ball Z in a larger perspective! Freely roam around various Dragon Ball locations and encounter various quests to take on and/or enjoy the freedom to train and become the ultimate warrior. Engage in story-related missions and even some newly unseen content that spans across the various arcs such as the Saiyan Saga all the way through Buu’s! Fight in free-ranged battles using legendary moves and unleashing numerous transformations such as Kaioken or even the legendary Super Saiyan form! Here’s a question for you great warrior…how will you live as Son Goku first in Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot!?
[ad_top2 class="mt40 mb40"]

Story

Goku’s story has been told numerous times before but in Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot you’re going to dive into his tale in a way never before seen. Assume the role of Goku and various other warriors as he fights off the Saiyan invaders, battles Cell and numerous other villains from the Dragon Ball Z lore. Experience Goku’s story by living in his shoes as you will train with numerous characters and even need to fish for food to fill Goku’s never-ending appetite! Learn of hidden stories unseen in the main series and meet familiar faces from the Dragon Ball world! Goku is going on one more adventure but in Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot, this adventure is larger than ever before!

Gameplay

It can be a bit strange for new gamers to see a Dragon Ball game not be a 2D fighter or 3D brawler. Yet, for those who remember, Dragon Ball has not shied away from the RPG realm. However, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot isn’t like the top-down RPG gameplay found in Dragon Ball Z: Buu’s Fury or the brawling action of Dragon Ball Z: Sagas. Instead, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is a larger than life action RPG with an emphasis on large. You’ll understand what we mean as we dive deeper into the gameplay found in Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot! Right off the bat, you’re going to be thrown into the main gameplay element of Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot. Players will soon learn that like the Xenoverse games, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is a 3D action fighter but with a focus on RPG elements. Rather than have combos you perform with a myriad of buttons, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot plays close to having everything assigned to several buttons. Unleash ki blasts with the hit of a face button or unleash devastating auto combos with another. Use the shoulder buttons in conjunction with the face buttons and you can unleash numerous series special attacks such as the Kamehameha wave or Piccolos’ Special Beam Cannon! As you progress further, you’ll unlock even more skills and even get the legendary transformations known in Dragon Ball Z. What keeps combat fun and exciting—though we will mention its faults later—is that battles aren’t just button mashing affairs. Early on fights with lesser-known robots and grunts—you’ll fight these a lot in Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot—can be won by slamming melee but when you face down larger foes like Cell or Vegeta, you’ll need to use everything in your arsenal of moves. You can always guard—though it can be broken if held down against strong attacks—or use flash movements to avoid attacks and hit your foe from behind! Even using special forms like Kaioken aren’t an instant win as they always come with a catch. In the case of Kaioken, using it will deplete your health constantly and Super Saiyan modes deplete your Ki making you exhausted or unable to use special attacks. Add to this the occasional fights where you need to rely on your team—which they come with their own AI that’s smart and special move palette—and Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot can be quite engaging when it wants to be.
Now fighting at first is pretty simple but when you begin to level up and unlock the community boards, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot opens up quite a bit. As you progress through the story, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot gives players community boards which act as a means of gaining special perks while fighting. For example, one community board will have a focus on Piccolo and give those who put points into it—you need gifts or random items to do this—perks that can increase your ki attacks or give defense against them in turn. You’ll also get Soul Emblems as you meet characters in Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot that can be put into those community boards and unlock even greater boons. These boards aren’t necessary early on in Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot but by the Frieze Saga arc, not using them might make fights a bit too tough. Another aspect of Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is the exploration which is where the problems of this game begin to pop up. Exploring Goku’s world is pretty amazing as it allows you to visit special locations known through the universe and even meet old friends! You can fish, train with enemies—some of which are harder than the main bosses—and take on quests for numerous items and experience points. The problem with exploration is that none of it feels needed. It might be cool to find Bibi and Launch—two well-known Dragon Ball characters—but its more for homage purposes than to add any life to the world of Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot. Training also gets tedious quickly and often only gives you a frugal amount of EXP which won’t help much to level up. Exploring in Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot feels a bit lifeless and that is a shame given this huge world filled with beauty.
Jumping back into combat, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot falters when you realize that as deep as the game can be…it also is quite shallow. You’ll never not just use a few buttons to unleash special attacks and while it is impressive to clash with foes, the feeling ultimately feels overly simple. This doesn’t change even when you begin to have larger scale battles like fighting Great Apes or large scale battles. You’re still hitting one button for melee, one for ki and one for defense/evasion. Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot could have learned a bit from the Xenoverse games and made combat a bit meatier. The biggest take away from Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot will no doubt be from the visuals. Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is easily the most gorgeous Dragon Ball game ever. Developer CyberConnect2 has always had a way of making anime adapted games into works of art as relevant from their work on Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja. There are some moments where the graphics actually trump the original animation and we were wowed by that. Sadly, there are some framerate issues when larger-scale attacks happen or an area loads but these rarely weakened the game. They were noticeable though during some big cutscenes which lessened the immersion factor considerably. Ultimately though, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot looks incredible and while it might not have the cel-shading found in Dragon Ball FighterZ, it has an art form that shows a lot of love towards the original anime.
[ad_middle class="mt40 mb40"]

Honey's Gameplay Consensus:

Here’s the deal with Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot. On one hand, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot does a lot right. Not only does the game look gorgeous and even—in some areas—surpass the original anime with special effects but there’s clearly a lot of love put into Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot. From character appearances to side stories that deepen the lore of Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot feels like the entire series put into a game. Combat also works quite well and often tests your skills with various systems in play. Unfortunately, as an RPG Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot falls a bit short with generic quests, boring lesser enemies and occasional framerate drops/lag. Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is a love letter to series fans—and newcomers will find it easy to dive into Goku’s world—but with a bit more polish this game could have avoided a lot of issues mentioned above. Thankfully, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot hits more than it misses.

Honey's Pros:

  • Excellent amount of detail for those who love the lore of Dragon Ball
  • Breathtaking visuals that occasionally surpass even the original series
  • Simple but intuitive combat that makes some battles pretty tough
  • Great soundtrack with original voice actors (both English and Japanese) reprising their roles
  • Deep RPG system that rewards players for doing more during the adventure/exploration segments

Honey's Cons:

  • Combat can occasionally be too simple
  • Quests and exploration do have some boring elements that make you rush through to the next big story segment
  • Framerate issues and lag were a big problem during some fights/cutscenes
  • Some RPG mechanics feel a bit tacked on

Honey's Final Verdict:

Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot has a plethora of small issues that keep it from being the best Dragon Ball Z game ever. That being said, developer CyberConnect2 has pulled off the impossible. Somehow, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is an amazing action/RPG with a lot of love for the fans and newcomers alike! We feel out of all the RPG bearing the Dragon Ball name, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is easily the best and is well worth your dollar! Are you excited now to play Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot? Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu: Die Neue These Seiran (The Legend of the Galactic Heroes: The New Thesis – Stellar War) Introduction

Continuing from the first season, the battle escalates for both the Galactic Empire and the Free Planets Alliance. However, things internally take a turn for the worst due to corruption within both governments. The Kaiser of the Galactic Empire suddenly passes away and his living relatives fight to take control of the Empire. Reinhard, an Admiral of the Imperial Navy, takes advantage of the chaos by fighting on two fronts. First, Reinhard releases a former Alliance Admiral from captivity and uses him to create a rebellion within the Alliance so they can eliminate themselves so Reinhard can easily conquer it at a later date. Second, he gets the best soldiers to side with him so they can fight the imperial establishment.

—Spoilers Ahead—

Why You Should Watch Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu: Die Neue These Seiran (The Legend of the Galactic Heroes: The New Thesis – Stellar War)
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="crunchyroll" url="http://www.crunchyroll.com/legend-of-the-galactic-heroes-die-neue-these" ]

1. Equally Portrays the Empire and Alliance as Good and Evil

While most of this anime is about exploring the democracy of the Alliance and the dictatorship of the Empire, the second season is the best representation of presenting those qualities. Throughout Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu, viewers can see that democracies and dictatorships can be good and/or bad. In a democracy filled with bureaucrats elected by the people, viewers can see that change comes slowly, and there are countless instances where elected individuals serve only themselves, not the people. It’s obvious that dictatorships have gotten a bad rap thanks to Hitler, but when someone noble as Reinhard serves the people and not the 1%, then it’s possible that everyone wins when that dictator can institute change without the checks and balances of other branches of government, which could slow things down or not make them happen at all.

2. It Improves Some Scenes from the Original

While this is more of a Then Vs. Now kind of argument, we have to admit that some key scenes in Seran are a major improvement over the original 1988-1997 series. Two notables scenes in Seiran that surpass the original are when Kircheis comes to Iserlohn Fortress to exchange POWs with the Alliance, and the other is when Kircheis dies protecting Reinhard. In the original series, both scenes take place in a much smaller setting. When considering the importance of these scenes, a larger room is naturally more appropriate to complement their significance, and Seiran provides that! With these two key scenes now taking place in a larger setting, the scope, angles, and lighting further emphasize the game-changing impact of what they represent.

3. Friendship

This installment of Legend of the Galactic Heroes mostly concentrates on the internal aspects and one of its key themes is friendship. In the Empire, the audience is further treated to the relationship between Reinhard and Kircheis. After Kircheis goes against Reinhard for not preventing a nuclear strike on a planet when he could have, Reinhard strips him of some notable privileges. One notable privilege that was revoked was bringing a firearm to one of the main halls at an Imperial establishment. Thankfully, Kircheis shows he’s still loyal to Reinhard by still preventing his assassination without his firearm, but still at the cost of his own life. Touched by Kircheis’ loyalty, Reinhard grieves for his best friend and the audience and Reinhard’s own men can see that he lost a large part of himself with the loss of Kircheis.

Why You Should Skip Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu: Die Neue These Seiran (The Legend of the Galactic Heroes: The New Thesis – Stellar War)

1. You Need to Watch Season 1 First

Naturally, you’re going to have to watch season 1. If you come into Seiran without watching the first season, you’re going to be lost. Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu is an anime that is intended to be watched from start to finish. If you don’t watch from the beginning, you won’t have any context to the anime’s history, terminologies, advancements, characters, and the context of the relationships.

2. No Third Season Confirmed

Considering where Seiran ends, things are about to heat up. While Seiran was confirmed during the broadcast of the first season, no news of a third season has been announced. If there is no third season to Die Neue These, then fans are going to feel cheated. Yes, viewers can always go back to the original series to see the rest of the story, but the present installment does a great job of appropriately modernizing it in the way it needs to (do we really need to watch an anime where 1000 years in the future, floppy discs and wire graphics in computers are still in use?). We can’t deny that the original is a true classic, but the remake does a great job of appealing to new and old fans alike, and new fans who don’t want to see the original (even if we recommend it) equally deserve to see the full story with what has been portrayed so far.

Final Thoughts

Without a shadow of a doubt, Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu is one of the greatest pieces in the world of Sci-Fi. It appeals to people of all political persuasions because it challenges and appeals to our beliefs. It shows that what we believe in may be right, or it may be wrong. It teaches us to look at things in a different way we never considered. Is democracy truly good because it’s for the people by the people? Are dictatorships bad just because one person has absolute rule? These very questions are why we recommend this series.

Birthday Wonderland (The Wonderland) Introduction and Story

Birthday Wonderland tells the story of Akane, who seems to be your atypical teenage girl. Often by herself, Akane isn’t the best when it comes to socializing which can make her life a bit problematic. The day before her birthday, Akane’s mother asks her to head to her Aunt Chii’s curios store and that’s where things get a bit bizarre. After putting her hand on a stone tablet, Akane ends up summoning a strange alchemist named Hippocrates and his servant Pipo. The two strangers who appear from the basement of Chii’s shop tell the two that they are here to find the Green Goddess and waste no time bring the pair to “The World Beyond”. After some strange meetups, Akane and Chii learn that this fantasy world is being plagued by a loss of water which is causing the trees to lose color and bigger issues to begin occurring. Add to that a strange mobile weapon called Armored Mouse has begun instilling fear into the citizens. Akane, despite not believing she has any powers, ends up going on a journey with her aunt to save this strange world and find a way back home! Along the way, the duo ends up meeting weird/strange characters who will help their journey along and equally provide them with trouble! Their biggest threat though comes in the form of the two pilots of the Armored Mouse one of which is named Zan Gu who just screams antagonist and his cat partner Doropo. The main goal of Akane, Chii, and Hippocrates is to save the world and also make sure the Prince—a character you’ll eventually learn more about—makes it to a special event that could alter the fate of the world. We won’t go into any further spoilers from here as Birthday Wonderland is an adventure of itself to watch but if you want to know some reasons why you should watch it—and possibly skip it—then continue below! In regards to the ending by the way, we will say it’s pretty solid overall and the movie has some great twists near the final thirty or so minutes that we were surprised to see!

Why You Should Watch Birthday Wonderland (The Wonderland)

1. Whimsical Animation

One can almost get lost while watching Birthday Wonderland. From the backdrops to the character animations, every piece of this nearly two hour animated film bursts with vibrant color/life. We have seen many anime films like Birthday Wonderland but Signal MD should be given praise for the work they put into this movie!

Intriguing Fantasy World

There have been numerous Wonderland-like films—both anime and non-anime—made in the last century but Birthday Wonderland oozes with originality and uniqueness. We loved how multiple settings seem to blend in this strange otherworld such as steampunk and classic fantasy. It’s rare a story can blend so many themes together well but Birthday Wonderland does it with ease.

3. Incredible OST/Voice Acting

Is there a soundtrack available for Birthday Wonderland? If there is, we need to buy it now. We were absolutely floored by the incredible music/ambiance found in Birthday Wonderland and the voice acting is also pretty darn solid! These characters in Birthday Wonderland are all quite charismatic and without solid voice acting, we could see this film being quite lifeless and flat.

1. No Time to Waste

While it might be a fantasy-themed adventure film, Birthday Wonderland doesn’t wait for setups or anything like it. After the first few minutes, Birthday Wonderland is a non-stop fantasy film and that might be a bit off-putting to those who like slower themed stories. We didn’t feel the movie suffered from this quick pace but we equally felt the pains of Akane being thrown into this new world without much rhyme or reason initially.

2. Not Enough Time…

Easily the most amazing thing about Birthday Wonderland was the different landscapes and towns Akane and her aunt visit on their journey. Unfortunately, as this isn’t a series, Birthday Wonderland doesn’t allow for these great vistas to be fully fleshed out. This isn’t a big issue mind you but for those who love deep lore and attention to detail when it comes to story, you might get annoyed a bit.

3. Fly Hippocrates

About halfway through Birthday Wonderland our grand alchemist Hippocrates—for reasons we won’t spoil—turns into a fly and while it is funny for a few minutes it lasts way too long. This comedic but overly long transformation allows Akane and Chii to have a better amount of time bonding together but we do miss Hippocrates’ cool movements and actions even if he is a bit of a jerk to them.

Final Thoughts

Birthday Wonderland was a truly enjoyable film that should appease both young kids and adults alike! We loved how it was never too serious but kept us glued to the screen wondering how Akane and her crazed aunt Chii could truly save a world they were so foreign to. Needless to say, Birthday Wonderland deserves a viewing and we think many of you fantasy/adventure fans will do so without us even needing to tell you! Did you already perhaps see Birthday Wonderland? Comment below if you did!
