Well, if so, we are going to dive in and find out how Takeuchi Naoko got famous! Tune in if you are a fan of Sailor Moon or Takeuchi Naoko herself!

[ad_top2 class="mt40"]

All About Naoko Takeuchi

Starting Out

Takeuchi Naoko was born in 1967 in the Yamanashi prefecture in a town called Kofu. As a teenager, Takeuchi attended Kofu Ichi High School, a school that she has admitted to using her experiences from for her own work such as the sailor uniforms for Sailor Moon. At Kofu Ichi High School, she joined the astronomy club and the manga club, and all of her experiences there influenced her life to take a turn towards writing manga. Her father, however, suggested some more practical alternatives in case her career as a mangaka didn’t pan out. Did you know that Takeuchi Naoko had attended Kyoritsu University and majored in Chemisty? Yes, her practical career choice was to become a pharmacist, something that she did indeed become. However, Takeuchi still ended up being a mangaka after graduating, and as we all know, she became an extremely popular and successful one at that.

Getting into the Manga Industry

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="4063349292" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]

After graduating with her pharmaceutical license, Takeuchi began her work as a mangaka in 1985 with her first manga, Love Call, which she submitted to Kodansha and won the Nakayoshi Comic Prize for NewComers. From there, Takeuchi worked on one shots until she wrote Maria, a manga that she worked on with her friend Marie Koizumi that became her first ongoing series. From there, Takeuchi moved onto her next project, The Cherry Project, a shoujo manga that was serialized in Nakayoshi starring a girl named Cherry who pursues ice skating in order to win over the heart of a talented ice skater. It is actually Takeuchi’s next work that really lead to her success and no, it’s not Sailor Moon. Takeuchi had dreamt of writing about girls fighting in space, and with one note from her editor to put the girls in sailor uniforms, Codename: Sailor V came into fruition in RunRun! Oh yes, Sailor V came first! Codename: Sailor V was a light hearted adventure about Aino Minako and a talking cat named Artemis. However, that’s not the end. Toei Animation was interested in turning Codename: Sailor V into an anime, but they requested that Takeuchi include more girls in on the adventure. That’s when Takeuchi came up with Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon, a magical girl adventure staring Tsukino Usagi as the lead while Minako came in as a senpai of sorts as a side character. Right from the start, the Sailor Moon manga was popular with readers, which spurned Takeuchi to work on both of her magical girl series. Sailor Moon is said to have revitalized the magical girl genre making it seem less childish with important themes like gender roles discussed. Many credit Sailor Moon with the later successes of magical girl anime, but it can only be expected with the amount of success that Takeuchi saw with her series Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon. It is without hesitation that we say that Takeuchi Naoko’s most famous work is Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon, even if you have heard of her other works.

Following Her Success with Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon...

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="B0774GZB1N" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]

Takeuchi Naoko saw a lot of fame and notoriety with her work Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon. However, Codename: Sailor V was cancelled with Runrun and its anime was never to come to life. Then, Takeuchi had difficulty with her next series, PQ Angels, when Kodansha neglected to print 7 pages of the manuscript, resulting in its cancellation despite its initial success. Eventually, Takeuchi left Kodansha in favor for Shueisha. With the help of her future husband Togashi Yoshihiro, Takeuchi began working on Toki*Meca. Eventually, Takeuchi returned to Kodansha and began serializing Love Witch, which was cancelled. Toki*Meca was also published in Nakayoshi, but it was around this time that Takeuchi became interested in the production of anime and started working on the live action for Sailor Moon. While Takeuchi has worked on quite a few things since including a children’s book, her work has come in full circle and a new Sailor Moon anime was announced in 2012. Takeuchi Naoko has seen so much success as a mangaka, but it’s clear that her most successful work is Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon, a manga that seemed to start off by accident. Still, despite her success, Takeuchi has managed to continue drawing manga despite some series becoming cancelled or lost. It’s amazing to see how much work Takeuchi has put into her career, but it’s that hard work, dedication, and her creativity that really made her such a successful and famous mangaka. Information has been taken from the following sources: http://comicsalliance.com/tribute-naoko-takeuchi/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naoko_Takeuchi http://sailormoon.wikia.com/wiki/Naoko_Takeuchi

Final Thoughts

Takeuchi Naoko may have been encouraged to take on a more practical career, but even her father’s practical attitude did not deter her from her dream! As you can see, she managed to get famous thanks to her hard work and man, she even married fellow mangaka Togashi Yoshihiro, who we all know wrote Hunter x Hunter. Takeuchi Naoko has seen a lot of success and if you were interested in how exactly it all happened, we hope we were able to shine a little light on her success for you. Takeuchi Naoko has so much talent; Aren’t you glad that she didn’t stick with being a pharmacist? For those of you who are fans of Takeuchi Naoko, share all of your thoughts about her! Is Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon your favorite series written by her? Or maybe you enjoyed some of her other works? Okay folks, we’ve discussed E3 2018 for several articles now, but it’s time to ask the biggest question of the whole event. What are the Top 3 Anticipated Video Games Announced at E3 2018? Honestly folks, this wasn’t an easy article to create as there were dozens upon dozens of games unveiled at E3 2018 and just going to three seems to be diservicing the entire event. However, these three games were the ones we got the most enjoyment from seeing unveiled and equally from the other patrons of E3 2018. We will just throw this out there right away though. Almost every game show at E3 2018 should be on this list, but these 3 titles stood out in some way or another and we think many of you readers might agree. Let us now examine what video games stood out as shining beacons throughout the whole E3 2018 event!

1. The Elder Scrolls VI

Before Bethesda began their event at E3 showcasing their various games such as Fallout 76 and Rage 2, there was a preview of things people really wanted to see. The highest vote was for a new Elder Scrolls game and low and behold, those who wished it got what they wanted. At the very end of the Bethesda event, The Elder Scrolls VI was revealed and while we got very little of it, it was enough to make our faces light up with sheer joy. We don’t know what will be in The Elder Scrolls VI or what consoles it will be for—it seems like it might be for newer consoles—but we didn’t care. The trailer—which we linked below—is only 36 seconds long, but we have rewatched it a dozen times and we know fans will do the same. E3 2018 was amazing and The Elder Scrolls VI made it even better.

Kingdom Hearts 3 has been the RPG many gamers—you can bet we’re included here at Honey’s Anime—have been wanting for nearly 14 years for. That’s why with every trailer and every little bit of info dropped for Kingdom Hearts 3, our anticipation grew stronger and stronger. E3 2018 however finally bought what none of the trailers gave us, a release date! We now know Kingdom Hearts 3 will be releasing January 29th 2019! This announcement made us clap loudly and literally some of us wanted to cry. Sora, Goofy, Donald and the rest of the gang will be coming back to us before we know it and we are so pumped. Now time to replay all of the Kingdom Hearts games to get ready for Kingdom Hearts 3.

3. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

[information_general item1 = "System/Platform" content1="Nintendo Switch" item2="Publisher" content2="Nintendo" item3="Developer" content3="Bandai Namco Games" item4="Release Date" content4="Dec 7, 2018" ]

Nintendo showing up at E3 2018 was minimalistic to put it nicely, which did anger some fans. However, what saved Nintendo for us here at Honey’s Anime was one trailer and one trailer alone, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Not only is Super Smash Bros. Ultimate releasing this year in December, but its’ coming with every character from the franchise! There are going to be 68 characters, yes 68 characters ranging from every Super Smash Bros. ever made! Besides the huge roster, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate also looks stunning with some vibrant stages and character design. Nintendo, you might have had a weak E3 2018, but this was enough to make it all worthwhile.

There are a lot of anime companies out there that produce our favourite shows. And a lot of times, fans don’t even know their names or much about them. But one of the biggest companies in anime right now is A-1 Pictures. Pushing out several anime every year, including some of the biggest names in anime today, they’re a very influential company in the anime world. A-1 Pictures is very diverse as well, producing anime across many different genres, and making both long-running series and short 12 episode runs. When it comes to choosing the current 10 Best Anime from A-1 Pictures, we face a challenge. A-1 Pictures has made so many different anime over the years, including some incredibly famous titles. It’s also made a few anime that didn’t garner as much international attention but are amazing all the same. Honey’s Anime faces a challenge when it came to choosing our list. In the end, we chose 10 anime that are from several different genres, with names both big and small, but one thing in common - they have to be great!

Fate/Apocrypha centres on the Holy Grail, a mystical object capable of granting the person who possesses it any wish they want. This has lead to Holy Grail Wars, where pairs of Masters and Servants fight to be the strongest team and earn the Grail. However, the last War ended suddenly when the Grail disappeared entirely. Years later, a guild called Yggdmillennia revealed that they had the Grail all along. The Holy Grail War begins again, but this time only between Yggdmillennia and the Mage’s Association. Each side sends forward seven pairs of Master and Servants, and whichever side still has people alive at the end is the winner. Fate/Apocrypha is another chapter in the long-running and very popular Fate anime series. It’s exciting and fast-paced, with lots of fantasy action and adventure to enjoy. It has magic, it has drama, it has epic fight scenes with mages and warriors; basically, you can count on Fate/Apocrypha to keep you on the edge of your seat and waiting for the next episode. It also features a few of the anime world’s most popular characters at the moment, like the very famous Saber. Any fans of magic and fantasy anime won’t want to miss out on watching Fate/Apocrypha. It has a wide fan base to give you plenty of people to discuss it with, too.

8. Ao no Exorcist (Blue Exorcist)

[es][information_general item1 = "Episodios" content1="___content1___" item2="Emisión" content2="___content2___" post_id=""][/es]

Ao no Exorcist is an anime about two worlds - the human one, Assiah, and the demon world, Gehenna. The only way for demons to move between these worlds is by possessing humans. However, Satan, the ruler of Gehenna, can’t find a human suitable enough for him to use. Thus he sends his son into Assiah instead, hoping to one day use his son to conquer Assiah. That’s where Rin Okumura comes in. He always thought he was a normal boy until he discovers he is actually the son of Satan! Going against his father’s wishes of taking Assiah together, Rin instead studies to become an exorcist to protect the human world. Ao no Exorcist is a great anime for fans of demons and the supernatural, but don’t want something overly dark or scary. Ao no Exorcist instead is more of a fantasy story, though there’s plenty of action and demon fights to go around! It presents an interesting story as well, and Rin is a dynamic main character who is interesting to learn more about as the anime progresses. Ao no Exorcist features an anime-exclusive ending that differs from the manga as well, so you have to watch the anime to see it!

7. Sword Art Online

And it’s gone on to have even more subsequent seasons, including one that is airing even as this article is published. 6. Working!! (Wagnaria!!)

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="crunchyroll" url="http://www.crunchyroll.com/wagnaria/episode-1-welcome-to-wagnaria-takanashi-goes-to-work-585582" ]

[es][information_general item1 = "Episodios" content1="___content1___" item2="Emisión" content2="___content2___" post_id=""][/es]

Souta Takanashi absolutely loves small and cute things in Working!!. It’s because of this weakness that he allows small and cute Popura Taneshima recruits him to work at a restaurant in Hokkaido called Wagnaria. Wagnaria is far from your average restaurant environment though and is fuelled by an eccentric collection of workers that become Souta’s coworkers. The floor manager wields a katana, the waitress is afraid of men, and the chef is sadistic just to name a few! But Souta has the chance to constantly sore on Popura, though it only increases her complex about looking younger than she is. Working!! is so charming thanks to its insane cast of characters. It’s a workplace comedy unlike any other, never having a dull moment at Wagnaria. Every episode brings something new and hilarious to this hodge-podge team to face, and you’ll be laughing at all of their antics every time. Working!! is a fun and a feel-good story that is entertaining to watch, and the character are sure to capture your heart, too. Working!! has gone on to have several sequels as well due to how well it was received initially, so you don’t have to just stop with one season luckily.

5. Kuroshitsuji (Black Butler)

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="crunchyroll" url="http://www.crunchyroll.com/black-butler-book-of-circus/episode-8-his-butler-sneering-657167" ]

[es][information_general item1 = "Episodios" content1="___content1___" item2="Emisión" content2="___content2___" post_id=""][/es]

Kuroshitsuji’s story begins on a night of misfortune when young Ciel Phantomhive lost absolutely everything in his life. In his darkest moment, the young Victorian boy promised his soul to a demon in exchange for his help. This demon is now in the form of Sebastian Michaelis, who is certainly “one hell of a butler” to his young master. Ciel helps the Queen of England herself in solving cases and solving problems, all with the aid of his amazingly talented butler. But the reality is that Sebastian is slowly preparing Ciel’s soul to be his most delicious meal even as the two investigate Ciel’s unfortunate luck together. Kuroshitsuji was massively popular when it first released both in Japan and abroad, and for good reason. It’s use of black comedy to balance an extremely dark story and concept with well-timed humour makes the anime appealing to many people. It also successfully brings alive Victorian England with amazingly detailed fashion and architecture, as well as beautiful foods. These aren't necessarily detailed to add but they make Kuroshitsuji a beautiful masterpiece that it is easy to get sucked into. The story is fast-paced and intense, keeping you at the edge of your seat. And Sebastian captured the hearts of people everywhere despite being, at the end of the day, a dangerous demon! Kuroshitsuji has gone on to have multiple sequels, musicals, video games, and even a live action movie.

It has a large fan base across the world, with fans committed enough that it’s even popular to cosplay from. And it’s not just the fans that love Fairy Tail; it is an award-winning anime, too, also enjoyed by the critics. It’s an entertaining and fun adventure story with the right balance of action and comedy and has memorable characters to boot. Fairy Tail is a huge anime to commit to watching, but it definitely gives fans something satisfying and big enough to really get drawn into.

3. Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic

Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic is the story of a young magician named Aladdin. Leaving home to explore the world, Aladdin travels with a Djinn named Ugo as his only companion. He doesn’t remain isolated for long though, soon befriending a boy named Alibaba when the two accidentally destroy a merchant’s cart. To pay for the damages, the two decide to search for a nearby “Dungeon,” one of several mysterious magic labyrinths hidden throughout the land said to grant people immense power. Conquering one of these Dungeons allows one to become a candidate to rule the world! Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic is an anime with a unique and refreshing setting and story. It’s still a coming of age adventure of sorts, but it’s creative Middle Eastern setting and use of familiar folklore names (though the characters are all original) makes it feel like a very different anime. Using bright colours, humour, and fun character designs, Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic feels like watching a funny fairy tale - with the added bonus of a fair amount of action! It’s full of larger than life characters and boasts a sequel as well.

Satoru is determined to help save Kayo from this fate in the past, and also save his mother in the present. Boku dake ga Inai Machi is the kind of anime that will keep you guessing, and have you on the edge of your seat. It’s a fast-paced and intriguing mystery that doesn’t reveal all of its secrets until right at the very end. It’s also a story full of emotion, sure to make you laugh, gasp, and maybe even cry. It’s a great example of mystery and thriller writing in anime, and while Boku dake ga Inai Machi may not have the same reputation as some of the other anime on our list of the best by A-1 Pictures, it deserves recognition. Don’t let this gem slip under your radar.

Kousei Arima is a young prodigy pianist in Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso. He has a promising future in music, and all eyes are turned to his piano playing. When his mother passes away, though, Kousei is so grief-stricken that he leaves the piano behind. He goes on to lead a life without music, staying as far away from the piano as he can. Everything changes when he meets a violist named Kaori Miyazono. Together with Kaori, Kousei begins to rediscover his love of music and find his place in the world again. Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso is a beautiful story, full stop. It has lovely animation and of course beautiful music. It’s a great coming of age story about friendship and romance, with the extra addition classical music instead of just a usual high school setting. Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso is also very emotional, tugging at heartstrings and bringing very real tears to the eyes of many who watch it. While some people may not have heard of it, Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso is a hidden masterpiece by A1-Pictures, so don’t be amongst the people who have never experienced this moving story.

A-1 Pictures is a relative newcomer when it comes to the world of animation studios. It was originally a subsidiary to Sony Music Entertainment’s animation division: Aniplex. Basically, A-1 was in charge of the kid-friendly, family oriented anime. It wasn’t until 2007 that it finally produced its first original series, Oukiku Furikabutte (2007). A-1 really hit its stride with the release of Kuroshitsuji (2008). It has continued to produce great series since then. In recent years, it’s gained a reputation as one of the studios able to produce the most consistent high-quality anime. The number of projects being simultaneously released, with high animation production value, is nearly unmatched today. This studio has released some of my favorite series in recent years. So, below I’m going to list off my top 10 anime from A-1 Pictures. Keep in mind they have produced A LOT of anime since the company’s inception. These are just my favorites and the projects where A-1 is the primary studio handling the production.

The newest game is an online RPG called Sword Art Online. As soon as the game is released 300 people instantly log in to try the game out. Shortly after, an announcement is made in the game. It explains that people cannot leave until they complete the game. They have to reach the 100th floor of the game’s tower. Also, if their in-game avatar dies their real body dies as well. Kirito is one of the people trapped inside. Sword Art Online is the story of Kirito struggle to complete the game and get out in one piece. Sword Art Online is another anime from A-1 that was extremely popular yet controversial. Everyone loved the first half of season 1. But, the second half received harsh criticism for the change in story arcs, damsel in distress syndrome (Asuna), and incestuous themes. Whatever people thought of the show, it was still watched worldwide and received a second season as well.

He gathers his childhood friends together and they try to overcome their feelings and experiences from that fateful day. Working through the grief may be the only way they can help Menma move onto the afterlife in peace. This short series is for anyone interested in slice of life anime. The supernatural element gives it a slightly different feel from your standard SOL about friendship. It’s filled with drama and cathartic moments for the characters and viewers alike. This series has become one of the most well-known series from A-1 Pictures. It has since had a novel adaptation, a visual novel, and a live action Japanese television drama that is currently shown on Fuji TV (premiering on September 21, 2015).

7. Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic

Aladdin is young boy who has lived most of his life in seclusion. Upon meeting Alibaba, he decides to help him achieve his dream of conquering a nearby dungeon, Amon. Together they are able to overcome the dangers within and obtain the treasure. But, just as complete the dungeon’s trials Aladdin is transported to a distant lane. He learns that he is a Magi, a rare class of magicians capable of extraordinary feats of magic. The Labyrinth of Magic follows Aladdin on his many adventures, reunion with Alibaba, and mastery over his abilities. On the surface, this looks like a typical shounen manga. Upon further inspection you’ll realize that there is a deep structure to the magical hierarchy and dungeon trials. Not only that, the narrative is a bit darker than you’d expect. The tone and maturity is similar to that of Hunter x Hunter. Its wide appeal has garnered it great praise and led to a sequel, Magi: The Kingdom of Magic. The manga that this is based off of is ongoing and has earned the Best Shounen Manga award from the 59th Shogakukan Manga Awards.

Ciel is a young boy who lost everything dear to him. He witnessed his parents being murdered and he was about to die as well. Just before death he made a deal with a demon. He sold his soul so that he could get revenge on those who took everything from him. The demon takes the guise of Sebastian, Ciel’s butler. Sebastian proves to be an amazing butler who handles the most difficult task with ease. However, his butler duties are trivial compared to his real purpose for aiding Ciel. The two of them work together to figure out who was behind the plot to murder Ciel’s parents. Once they do… that person will have to face Sebastian’s demonic wrath. This is the oldest anime on the list. As I mentioned in the intro, this is the series that cemented A-1 Pictures as a formidable animation studio. It crawled out of the shadow of its previous employer, Aniplex. Before this, A-1 had released some original works and some decent shows adapted from video games. The series itself is a mix of ill-timed comedic moments and a serious tone. Aside from that, the story, characters, action, and animation are stellar. The manga was popular worldwide. This is where A-1 discovered the formula for creating a successful anime. Adapt the story from an extremely popular manga and produce high quality visuals and animation. This tried and true method has pushed A-1 into one of the leading animation studios.

Aldnoah Zero takes place in an alternate reality where the Apollo 17 (1972) mission uncovered a hyper gate leading to Mars. Eventually a small group of humans settled in Mars, terraformed it, and took to calling themselves Martians. There, they found technological secrets that they chose to keep to themselves. Fast forward to 1999, a war break out between earthlings and the Martians. A temporary cease fire was agreed upon after a massive explosion on the moon. In the present, 2014, a princess from Mars tries to continue peace talks with ambassadors from Earth. However things take a turn for the worse and it appears the princess has been assassinated. The Martian Orbital Knights use their highly advanced Landing Castles to launch an assault on Earth in an attempt to eradicate humanity. Aldnoah Zero has completed two seasons and possibly a third season or a movie on the horizon. Since its release it has generally received great reviews… that is up until the finale. People enjoyed the series and were heavily invested in it, but unfortunately most people felt the end of season 2 wasn’t up to par with the rest of the show. That aside, it has been one of the most popular shows these past couple of years.

Fairy Tail is a legendary guild filled with extremely popular and powerful mages. One mage in particular has dreams of joining this prestigious guild. Her name is Lucy Heartfilia. One day she runs into a clueless, prone motion sickness mage. He just happens to be a member of Fairy Tail and Lucy’s only chance to get accepted. This series is the story of Lucy joining the guild and all the adventures that take place after. This series has the most episodes out of all the ones listed here. It has quickly become an adventure epic comparable to the likes of Naruto, Bleach, and Hunter x Hunter. Though, I’m hesitant to say it’s on the level of One Piece. Both the original manga and anime adaptation have received various awards and critical praise. The series has proved to be a mainstay for A-1 Productions. Its original run ended in 2013, but in 2014 the series picked up again and has been going strong ever since. Fairy Tail has been receiving more attention now that Bleach and Naruto, previous competitors, have ended their run (Bleach) or getting close to completion (Naruto). Blue Exorcist is the story of Rin Okumura. He and his brother (Yukio) were raised by Father Shiro Fujimoto. One day, Rin starts to notice strange critters affecting his daily life. After more of them appear and begin to attack him, Father Shiro has to step in to save him. He explains to that Rin is a demon, in fact he’s the son of Satan. Satan plans to use Rin’s body to cross over into the world of humans. This revelation breaks apart Rin’s world and he has to rediscover who he truly is. Is he the son of the most powerful demon in existence or does he take after the priest who raised him? Blue Exorcist is one of my all-time favorite anime. This show is for fans of action, supernatural elements, comedy, and heartfelt moments. You can read my full review here. This was one of the most popular anime at the time of its release. Its release suffered from the manga being too popular at the time. The anime was rushed into production before the manga had finished the story arc. Therefore, the anime was forced to create its own ending. The show still remains popular to this day and is always thrown around when people talk about supernatural anime.

Child prodigy, Arima Kosei, was a remarkable piano player. Tragically, he lost his mother early on and gave up playing the piano on the day of her death. He developed a mental block that prevented him from hearing the notes he was playing. This continued for years until he met a girl, Miyazono Kaori, in his junior high school. She is a violin player who needs his help for a recital. She convinces him to play with him. Though, he struggles and is humiliated a few times she continues to stand by his side and encourages him to keep playing. I have to be honest. I never watched this entire series. I loved it from the very beginning and I was able to get through the first five episodes. The foreshadowing was too strong though. I couldn’t bear to see the tragedy that was sure to follow. The original manga was awarded the Best Shounen Manga at the 37th Kodansha Manga Awards. The anime adaptation does a pretty good job of staying true to the original though the pacing drags a bit. This show is for anyone who enjoys the slice of life genre or is interested in classical music. The song renditions in this series are excellent. The relationships and character interaction are of the highest quality. This was one of A-1’s most successful series this year (well, late 2014 to early 2015). The other is…

1.The Seven Deadly Sins (Nanatsu no Taizai)

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 24 " aired=" Oct 2014 - Mar 2015 "]

A group of legendary knights known as the Seven Deadly Sins were the pride of the Kingdom of Britannia. They were feared because of their peerless strength and skill. The “evil” knights however conspired to overthrow the king and rule the land. The kingdom’s holy knights then drove out the small group of traitors and nearly eradicated them. Years later these holy knights captured the king and have become the tyrannical rulers of Britannia. The current princess, Elizabeth, leaves the kingdom and goes on a search for the falsely accused Seven Deadly Sins. They are the last hope for rescuing the king and restoring peace to the kingdom. This one is my personal favorite out of all the A-1 produced series. The action, comedy, fan service, and animation are all top notch. Each character is over the top and engaging. I can’t say enough good things about this series. You can read a full review by Zack Ringler here. Nanatsu no Taizai was a big hit this year. Fans loved it and had one of the best opening songs (in my opinion). Though the first season wrapped up the story arc nicely, a second season is highly likely. But, fans will have to wait for the manga to develop a bit further before an anime adaptation can continue.

Final Thoughts

So there it is. That’s my list of Top 10 anime from A-1 Productions. There may be one or two series that I could shuffle around in order. But, I’ll stand by my decision to put Nanatsu no Taizai at #1. I’ll fight anyone to the death that says otherwise! Not really. But, at least we’ll exchange some blows in verbal fisticuffs! What’re your thoughts? Maybe you have some other selections that were left out of the list altogether. Let me know what you think about these choices.

Time and creativity did the rest with witches, which have been present in the anime world in all shapes and personalities. With that, let’s remember some of the best witch anime of all time!

It is 1940. Europe is in the middle of a war, and Germania plans to conquer the little country of Elystadt. The princess of this country is also kidnapped, but then the last witch, Izetta, escapes her prison. Izetta knew the princess, so she pledges to protect Elysdat from Germania. There have been a few attempts to combine witches and war, but the latest one has been an interesting and fresh experiment. Izetta and Princess Fine have contrasting personalities. They both can be taken as too young and naive, but they have to mature to prove they can handle the situation. Full of action, mystery and a bit of Macross nostalgia (because of the boosting morale part), Shuumatsu no Izetta tells us the story of a unusual witch.

8. Mahou Shoujo-tai Arusu (Tweeny Witches)

What do you do when you believe in magic? Some people say that you should follow your dreams, but should you do so even it means to go into another world? Arusu is transported to a realm where witches rule, capturing sprites and, forcing them into slavery. So yeah, dreams are not always as nice as you thought they were, but Arusu has a plan to change things up… Mahou Shoujo-tai Arusu had a dynamic, complex and detailed art style for its time. The contrast between a magical lover and a world where magic is a tool of oppression was also original, and reminds us a bit of RPG fantasy style anime that would become popular in later years. However, the best part of the epic adventures of Arusu is that they are not overly depressing or serious; there is room for fun! Full of personality and imagination, the characters of Mahou Shoujo-tai Arusu are a delight for Witch anime lovers.

Because our heroine constantly uses her magic to protect the innocent, the archangel Michael is sent from the heavens to stop her. So, the archangel issues a decree that states that if Maria loses her virginity, she will lose her magic too. The protagonist will not have it, though, and as the situation gets more and more dangerous, the church plots to stop her. Junketsu no Maria starts as a historical adventure with a lot of comedy. However, as the series progresses, the tone gets more serious from time to time. Double moral should be punished, and Maria will not have it! It helps that she is a happy teenager and that there is some ecchi here and there.

If you ever wondered how Kiki (from Kiki’s Delivery Service) would have been if she was a teenager, look no further. Makoto is an enchanting lead who takes life at her own pace. Ok, so maybe the slice of life and happy witches are not your cup of tea. Maybe you want to watch a witch anime that really scares the hell out of you. In that case, let us recommend Umineko no Naku Koro ni. An isolated island, a who dunnit mystery, lots of horror, and a powerful witch await here. When the Kinzou family’s head senses his death approaching, he requests the family to get together in the island. They do so once a year, but this time, the patriarch is so desperate to see Beatrice, the love of his life, that he immerses himself in black magic. Yeap, we know that playing with black magic usually does anything but help. Still, thanks to some deeply disturbed characters, we testify a twisted game where reality becomes surreal. Death is hiding in every corner and the least you want to know is who is gonna get rich once Kinzou is dead. What we all want to know is the backstory of Beatrice, the Golden Witch!

Witches possess the ability to call upon spirits, and cast magical spells to thwart off enemies. They also have the ability to sit atop a broomstick and fly majestically in the air, without much effort. Not all witches fly on broomsticks however, as some prefer to weild weapons using special spells or mantras. This is why we have decided to bring you an article on bringing you the best of both worlds. Let us hop right in!

Making its way into the eighth spot our top ten witch anime is Witch Craft Works. Quirky student Takamiya has had a crush on his classmate Ayaka for some time, and neither have spoken despite sitting next to each other. Things turn serious when Takamiya suddenly comes face to face with the grim reaper, as a part of the school building is about to send him to the next dimension. Before he could even blink, Ayaka comes flying to his rescue, only not as a student but as a witch. The truth is finally revealed to Takamiya, with Ayaka stating that it is her mission to protect him at all times. Ayaka is the all time classic rendition of what a witch truly represents. Her image consists of an overly large pointed hat, along with the broom witches are known for. Ayaka's goal is to use her magic powers to protect Takamiya, since other more powerful witches are after them. It shows a nice relationship between two people who, despite their differences can build a great bond and overcome to the obstacles in front of them. It's a mixture of good and evil in this anime, with a nice blend of trickery and finesse in the art of witchcraft. This is a must watch for those who enjoy a little taste of everything.

Continuing the popular franchise, When They Cry is the third season which further explains the story around Battler. Every year, the Ushiromiya family gather on the island of Rokkenjima to discuss financial matters regarding inheritance. Matters start to turn sour when the head of the family Kinzo, confesses that his life is fading and that his wish is to meet his true love Beatrice, who is the golden witch. Things turn ugly fast when suddenly, a typhoon hits the very island they're on, trapping all of them without much assistance to rescue them. Mysterious murders begin to pop up and so now the family must fight for their lives. Umineko truly displays the darker side of witchcraft, using mind manipulation to inflict pain and suffering on others. While the other witches on our list use potions and other magic spells, Umineko use psychological witchcraft to commit murders throughout the series. This is what creates the excitement throughout the show, because you're always wondering how the next person will be killed. This is a great watch for those who enjoy mystery.

[Information episodes=" 11 " aired=" July 2, 2002 – December 24, 2002 "]

We are flying closer to the end of our top ten, but we couldn't help but throw Witch Hunter Robin into the witch mix. Robin is a 15 year old craft specialist who came to Japan from Italy, to work for the STN- Japan Division. She was to replace a member who was killed in battle, and so it became her mission to capture witches alive to further discover why they became witches in the first place. In a world full of betrayl, Robin is on a journey to not only uncover the mysteries of the existence of witches, but to uncover the dark pasts of her own life leading up to Japan. She comes across a male individual named Amon, who she becomes attracted to, and the two work together to chase conspiracies. Amon shares somewhat of a similar dark past to Robin, and so her mission is to dig into his life to find more answers. Witch Hunter Robin is such an awesome anime because of how much versatility is used pertaining to dark magic. The many witches that Robin encounter have the power to mind control, use telekinesis, and various spells to dispose of enemies. Robin also has the ability to use her own mastery of the arts, but more so to immobilize them to capture. This show is a perfect fit for any witch fan.

Itsuki has now taken over his father's family business ever since his mysterious disappearance. The magician dispatch service has become Itsuki's responsibility, which employs magicians and other supernatural beings to help those in need of assistance. Due to his lack of business experience and cowardly ways, he must learn enough leadership to deal with his employees and enemies who threaten his business. Rental Magica uses more magic spells in the more helpful fashion, since Itsuki's business is all about employing magicians to protect. So while the art of witchcraft is used predominantly within the series, much of it is used to ensure the safety and well being of the citizens. There are times however, where magic is used as a way to corrupt others, but in the end it was incorporated to guard the family business from being destroyed. This fantasy, supernatural anime will surely impress those who are into the more protective arts of witchcraft!

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="B00UXXSWVI" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" April 9, 2014 – July 2, 2014 "]

If you've watched the Soul Eater series, this is a side story of the original. This story focuses on Tsugumi, along with his friends Meme and Anya. The three decide to take part in the normally overcome target (NOT) class to learn how to harness their powers more consistently when trouble arrives. Maka, who is their other colleague takes part in the especially advanced talent (EAT) which specializes in more battle oriented magic. Soul Eater Not! is a comedy that is full of ecchi and supernatural powers. The reason why it makes our top ten witch list is because of the array of powers each character possesses. Meme and Anya focus their magic powers to ensure they stay out of trouble, for example Anya making clumsy mistakes, or when something ecchi takes place. Maka on the other hand, use her spells to protect herself and battle evil monsters much like a warlock would do. It's a great mix of dark and light which is similar to that of a priest and mage.

3. Junketsu no Maria

Junketsu no Maria dvd
[sourceLink asin="B00RVCEEFW" asin_jp="" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" January 11, 2015 – March 29, 2015 "]

Junketsu no Maria follows the story of Maria, on her life of being the most powerful witch during the hundred year's war in Medieval France. This blonde haired, blue eyed girl is your stereotypical witch with a unique broomstick in the shape of a pitchfork. She is not one to use her magic for evil however, as she despises anything to do with war. Maria uses her magical prowess to help prevent any catastrophe that tries to endanger the world around her. Due to the dangers of using magic openly, an angel named Ezekiel was hired to watch over her. Despite all of this, she still continues to wield her magic spells. She builds a relationship with Joseph, but was warned by Archangel Michael that, once she loses her virginity she loses all of her magic. Knowing this, Ezekiel ensures to protect her magic at all costs. It's a heartfelt tale of a typical witch out to prove to everyone that she is not evil, and that she is out to end war. Junketsu no Maria makes it onto our top three because she truly embodies the life of a witch. Her appearance is very fitting, but without the pointed hat to complete the look. While her powers are not used in any way to harm the lives of others, her spell casting and mantras define that of a witch who is out to protect. Her goal oriented mind keeps her fighting, and protecting the ones she cares about. The church continues to chase after her, in hopes to kill her, but her use of spells to protect society make it hard to convict her as being dangerous. It's a fun and lighthearted take on the tale of witchcraft, along with a romantic relationship that blossoms between characters.

Liked Mahou Shoujo Ikusei Keikaku (Magical Girl Raising Project) ? Watch Mahou Shoujo Site! (Magical Girl Site)

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="B07BG14XSG" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes="12" aired="April 2018 - Ongoing" ]

Asagiri Aya is a very pitiful middle school girl who has to deal with bullying at school as well as at home. She contemplates ending her life constantly, but then one day, she is brought to a website with a creepy mascot who offers her the chance of a lifetime. Aya is given the powers to become a magical girl. With her new powers, just how will Aya use them to better her life?

Major Similarities Between Mahou Shoujo Ikusei Keikaku (Magical Girl Raising Project) and Mahou Shoujo Site (Magical Girl Site)

1. Pure-hearted heroine

Right off the bat, if you love those idealistic and pure-hearted heroines like Snow White from Mahou Shoujo Ikuesei Keikaku, then you’ll appreciate Aya from Mahou Shoujo Site. Despite being abused, beaten, tortured, and nearly raped, Aya has an idealistic approach to how to use her power and strives to do better than some of the other magical girls. She’s a bit naive, but at least this isn’t one of those anime where the main characters are ready and willing to exact revenge in that whole anti-hero approach.

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="NEOGDS-282849" text="" url="" ]

2. Darkness everywhere

Right from the start, you can tell that Mahou Shoujo Ikusei Keikaku is going to be dark with the ominous feeling that lurks at every corner. It doesn’t surprise you when it gets bloody the way Puella did. In a similar fashion, Mahou Shoujo Site is constantly dark and twisted especially with the first episode where we see Aya fighting thoughts about suicide and others beating on her for no reason. Mahou Shoujo Site begins by taking you to a new place where the darkness just sits heavily in your heart, but if that’s what you like about Mahou Shoujo Ikusei Keikaku, then this is the anime for you.

Liked Mahou Shoujo Ikusei Keikaku (Magical Girl Raising Project)? Watch Dorei-ku The Animation!

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="B07DDSQ9YL" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes="?" aired="April 2018 - Ongoing" ]

SCMs have grown in popularity in the world of the underground allowing people to gamble their free will away in a game where all the rules are dictated by one of the players. Should you lose, your free will belongs to the hands of the winner.

Major Similarities Between Mahou Shoujo Ikusei Keikaku (Magical Girl Raising Project) and Dorei-ku The Animation

1. Eerie atmosphere

Much like Mahou Shoujo Site, there is a lot of eeriness and an ominous atmosphere that really keeps you on your toes. While Dorei-ku doesn’t pull off that feeling of a horror anime, you have that heart pumping moment where you just have to know what is coming next considering the premise of the anime. It’s a thriller anime and you just don’t know which way players will swing.

2. Battle Royale

Like Mahou Shoujo Ikusei Keikaku, characters will fool you. Some characters who appear to be psychopaths may actually be more reasonable and just because others appear to be power hungry does not mean they are. It feels like a real battle royale as characters fight for their freedom and what they want, much like Mahou Shoujo Ikusei Keikaku. It’s not an actual battle royale anime, but it definitely feels like one if any anime were to this season.

Final Thoughts

And with that, we hope you found a new anime to watch from this season that matches your love for dark fantasy anime. Do any of the anime in this article appeal to you at all? Are you excited to check them out? Let us know! Don’t forget to keep checking in with us at Honey’s Anime for more of your otaku needs!

The shounen genre is arguably the most popular genre there is in anime, and it’s done an incredible job establishing itself in the West. All the way back from Astro Boy in the 1960s, we’ve become attached to stories about young adults overcoming obstacles after obstacles to save their friends and reach the peak of their ambitions. Shounen’s expansive casts, fierce head to head confrontations, and increasingly thrilling competitions have made it an easily enjoyable genre. We never go long without hearing about an exciting new shounen breaking new boundaries, subverting old conventions, or refining the formula. All of those combined to make whittling down all the shounen to a list of just ten a tough task; however, only ten of those contenders could make our list and after much deliberation, here are the ten best shounen out there.

10. Noragami (Noragami: Stray God)

[sourceLink asin="B015XVPJOM" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" Jan. 2014 – Mar. 2014 " ]

Yato is a nameless minor god without a shrine to his name. If you have five yen, he’s willing to do just about any odd job you have in mind for him. Although he has ambitious dreams to become a widely worshipped god, he’s so far from his goals that his Regalia, a god’s weapon partner, abandons him. Hiyori, a high school girl able to see phantoms, comes to the rescue of Yato under the belief that he was about to be run over by a truck. The accident not only leaves Hiyori in a hospital bed but also a half-phantom. Hiyori enlists Yato to help her get back to normal for the affordable price of five yen. Noragami establishes the shounen stakes early on: Yato is aiming to be a famous god, but he’s starting from the very bottom. Despite what you may initially believe, Yato is less like the ambitious youngsters aiming to become the strongest, but more so the forgotten warriors trying to atone for their past. Noragami best represents the spirit of shounen with its emphasis on the friendships between Yato, Hiyori, and his new Regalia Yukine. Nevertheless, Noragami never falls short of providing fights with the emotional-punch we love to find in shounen.

9. Bakuman.

[sourceLink asin="B011I2DYDS" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 25 " aired=" Oct. 2010 – Apr. 2011 " ]

Moritaka Mashiro’s dream of becoming a mangaka is crushed the day his uncle, an accomplished mangaka in his own right, dies from overwork. Mashiro chooses to settle for the life of a salaryman, but that doesn’t stop him from drawing in his notebooks. One day, Akito Takagi, an ace student and aspiring writer, discovers Mashiro’s notebook and proposes they team up to create a best-selling manga series. When Takagi’s proposal is rejected, he drags Mashiro to the house of Miho Azuki, the girl Mashiro has a crush on, and tells her of their plan to create a manga that will become an anime where she will be the lead actor. Now motivated by these new goals, all three middle school students won’t settle for less than their ambitions. Bakuman’s Mashiro and Takagi must deal with the common problem most shounen leads are faced with: their goals are hard to achieve. Even with his uncle being the creator of a popular gag series, he still ended up in debt and overworked, and for a moment, this sidetracked Mashiro’s dreams. Bakuman is a definite stand-out on this list because its characters aren’t physically competing but that only highlights that the true spirit of shounen goes beyond just the fist fights. It doesn’t really matter what you’re competing in as long as you are competing, the challenge is lofty, and the competition is to be the best. Mashiro and Takagi know from the get-go they’ve got a tough task ahead of them, but they aren’t willing to relent.

8. Nanatsu no Taizai (The Seven Deadly Sins)

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="ANSB-13875" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 24 " aired=" Oct. 2014 – Mar. 2015 " ]

The Seven Deadly Sins are legendary knights who betrayed the Holy Knights of Britannia, so they could overthrow the ruler of Liones. They failed and were defeated by the Holy Knights. A decade later, the Holy Knights of Britannia have overthrown the ruler of Liones and begun their tyrannical reign over the kingdom. Elizabeth, one of the former princesses of the Kingdom of Liones, scours the region of Britannia to find the Seven Deadly Sins and get them to help her take back her throne from the Holy Knights. Meliodas, the lead character of The Seven Deadly Sins, fits into that category of shounen characters seeking to atone for their past. He’s not the only one, of course, all the other knights of his faction tend to have dark pasts as well. They each have an opportunity with Elizabeth and the Kingdom of Liones to atone for those sins by taking the throne back from the Holy Knights. The Seven Deadly Sins has all the big magical fights you could ask for, a great cast of protagonists, and a particularly sweet tournament arc to boot.

7. Kuroko no Basket (Kuroko’s Basketball)

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="4934569648242" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 25 " aired=" Apr. 2012 – Sep. 2012 " ]

Tetsuya Kuroko was called the “Phantom Sixth Man” as part of Teikou Junior High School’s basketball team. The team went on to win championships three years in a row and earned the name “The Generation of Miracles,” but went their own ways in high school and became rivals. Tetsuya ends up going to Seirin High School where he teams up with Taiga Kagami, a player returning from the US, and they aim to win the Interhigh championship. It won’t be easy, especially when the former members of “The Generation of Miracles” will be standing in their way. Sports have always gone hand in hand with shounen, so it wasn’t too hard to make one out of basketball. Kuroko is the ultimate underdog, he’s only got one skill, and in a way, so does Kagami. However, they both must find a way to overcome their crippling overspecialization if they want to be able to beat the once-in-a-decade competition they’re facing from “The Generation of Miracles”. Kuroko’s Basketball dishes all the tournament battles, practices, friendships, and over-the-top action you can ask for in a shounen, all in a neat basketball package.

6. Saiki Kusuo no Ψ-nan (The Disastrous Life of Saiki K.)

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="B01LYZPWPV" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 120 " aired=" Jul. 2016 – Dec. 2016 " ]

Kusuo Saiki is a psychic with countless abilities like x-ray vision, teleportation, telepathy, and telekinesis. His powers have been more of a curse than a blessing for him and only serve to make his life troublesome. Unfortunately, unlike most people, he doesn’t get to experience the highs and lows of life thanks to his powers. Furthermore, his psychic abilities somehow conspire to get him involved with the weirdest people. Saiki tries to avoid being in the spotlight but between his powers and the people it attracts, he doesn’t have much choice in the matter. The Disastrous Life of Saiki K. is somewhat of a parody of the shounen genre. Saiki K is all-powerful from the start and instead of having some great goal, he simply wants to live a normal life. Saiki K ramps up all the comedic elements found in shounen to eleven, and with its eclectic cast and short five-minute episodes, it’s hard not to enjoy the way Saiki K’s switched up the shounen formula.

5. Shingeki no Kyojin (Attack on Titan)

[sourceLink asin="B00C3BRFKW" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 25 " aired=" Apr. 2013 – Sep. 2013 " ]

Titans, flesh-eating creatures, have driven the last remnants of humankind behind three concentric walls. Humanity managed to survive behind these walls for a century until a colossal titan shattered their fragile peace and broke a part of the outermost wall. Eren Yaeger, Mikasa Ackerman, and Armin Arlert, three children who suffered a great tragedy when the wall broke, now enlist into the Survey Corps to combat the Titans outside the walls. Attack on Titan has quickly risen in popularity worldwide because of its much more somber take on the shounen genre. This series combines shounen tropes with the anyone-can-die nature of today’s finest post-apocalyptic series. Eren Yeager has an ambitious goal to match his fellow shounen leads, though it’s certainly darker than most of his peers: he wants to kill every titan on Earth. Eren will discover the ability to do just that, and his friends will be eager to help him, but he’ll also figure out that the world he lives in is much bigger and somehow more dangerous than he initially thought.

Light Yagami, high school student and prodigy, picks up the Death Note and decides to skeptically follow its instructions. When the Death Note does as its intended to do, Light Yagami sees it as an opportunity to rid the world of crime. He will quickly find himself opposed by the greatest detective in the world, an eccentric named L, and caught in a game of cat and mouse. While Attack on Titan may be one of the darker shounen to date, it’s hard to top Death Note. Light Yagami wants to rid the world of crime, and as far as goals go, it certainly fits into the shounen genre; however, the way Light goes about it leads him to a darker path than most of his peers. Death Note may not have the iconic fight scenes of other shounen, but the series-long rivalry between Light and L stands toe to toe with any other shounen rivalry, and the game of one-upmanship is as thrilling as any fight you can find.

3. One Punch Man

[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" Oct. 2015 – Dec. 2015 " ]

Saitama is a hero who can defeat anyone with only a single punch. He’s only a hero for fun, and for all intents and purposes, looks like an ordinary man. Being a hero without a challenge has made Saitama’s life out to be rather underwhelming. Despite his power, no one knows his name, but there’s an opportunity to change that when Genos, a 19-year-old cyborg, registers them in the Hero Association. Now a registered hero, Saitama will begin the solemn search for an opponent that will take more than a single punch to defeat. One Punch Man is a deconstruction of the shounen and superhero genre. Most shounen tend to focus on the main character working up to achieving untold power but Saitama already has that, and no villain or hero is a match for him. He’s well contrasted with One Punch Man’s other heroes who actually have to struggle against much stronger opponents, but whenever Saitama gets involved the fights are done with a single strike. In One Punch Man, you’ll find a brilliant action-comedy that fittingly plays host to some of the most gorgeous fights and funniest gags you’ll see in the genre.

[Information episodes=" 201 " aired=" Apr. 2006 – Mar. 2010 " ]

Sakata Gintoki is the president of the Yorozuya, a company that does odd jobs to make ends meet. The other two members of the Yorozuya are Shimura Shinpachi, a samurai-in-training, and Kagura, an extremely strong alien. In an Earth where Japan was invaded by aliens during the Edo period, technology has quickly advanced, and the samurai have been mostly wiped out. It’s hard to make ends meet for Gintoki, but in a world of aliens, assassins, rebels, pirates, and everything else under the sun, there’s always a job to be done. Much like Saiki K and One Punch Man above, Gintama takes from its predecessors and contemporaries to heavily parody the shounen genre. Gintoki will easily draw similarities to the leads from Noragami and The Seven Deadly Sins mentioned earlier in the list, he has a dark past that he’s mostly tried to move on from. While Gintama is liberal with gags you can find everywhere from the episode titles, to the most dramatic of situations, it’s still quite ready to get serious when need be. The Yorozuya aren’t all that ambitious, but get ready for plenty of Earth-saving fights, and periodic rescue missions to go along with Gintama’s consistent humor.

Shouyou Hinata fell in love with volleyball after watching a player nicknamed “The Little Giant” on television. Although there was no volleyball team at his middle-school, he practiced intensively, convinced other people at his school to join, and they qualified for a tournament. Unfortunately, they ran into “King of the Court” Tobio Kageyama and were unceremoniously defeated. Hinata’s made it his goal to become better than Kageyama and joins Karasuno High School’s volleyball team, the same school “The Little Giant” attended. A surprise awaits Hinata at his new school, one of his teammates is Kageyama, and they will have to set aside their differences if they want to restore Karasuno to glory. As with Kuroko’s Basketball, the premise of Haikyu!! revolves around the middling lead character trying to overcome failures from middle school. Furthermore, Haikyu!! also has two lead characters on the frontlines trying to overcome their differences to elevate their team. Haikyu!! has everything that makes a shounen special, the entire series is pretty much a tournament arc, the animation is sublime, Hinata is an underdog worth cheering for, and its expansive and constantly growing cast have gripping relationships, friendships, and rivalries throughout. It can be easy to dismiss sports anime, but there’s a reason Haikyu!! tops our list of shounen, and it’s not a series you’d want to miss out on.

Final Thoughts

It’s hard to say what shounen is at its core: a story about friendship, competition, or pursuing your goals? Maybe it’s all of the above! That uncertainty is what provides us with a great variety of series; we’ve seen darker shows, parodies, sports, a show about becoming a mangaka, and more traditional shounen about atoning for past mistakes, sometimes with two or more of those combined. So, you’ve got our Top 10 Shounen Anime, what are your favorite shounen, and what makes a shounen great for you?

The term “shounen” is often misused as a genre. As a demographic, it’s the term magazines use to determine who their core audience is and the sort of content that would be appropriate to publish within those pages. However, as time has gone on, these demographics have become less relevant with seinen magazines publishing fairly tame material and shounen magazines going quite dark. However, in the West, we’ve managed to completely misuse the term to mean something else entirely. In the West and in this list, ‘shounen’ is often used to regard the battle series that became increasingly popular within shounen magazines such as Weekly Shounen Jump and Weekly Shounen Sunday. Due to the nature of battle series, these manga often have a continued lifespan and in some cases, even receive full anime adaptations. This is a selection of 10 of the best adaptations of these sort of battle series that are packed to the brim with supernatural action.

10. Naruto

[Information episodes=" 220 " aired=" Oct. 2002 - Feb. 2007 "]

Before Naruto was Shippuuden, it was just Naruto. Telling the story of a boy rejected by his village, Naruto sets out to become the Hidden Leaf Village’s greatest ninja and eventually, the leader of the village, the Hokage. Set up into various different arcs, each story shows Naruto’s growth as a character alongside his teammates Sasuke and Sakura. One key moment is when he saves the village from a rampaging Gaara, turning his image amongst the villagers for the better. Each arc expands this ninja world, exploring the limits of a ninja’s power displayed through each of the characters we meet. Naruto was one of the most popular shounen battle series, capturing audiences very early on, securing itself a run that’s gone on for 14 years and still continuing with Naruto Shippuden and eventually Boruto. The series has spawned multiple games, figures and even several spinoff movies, including The Last and Boruto, expanding the series into the future.

9. Dragon Ball Z

Dragonball Z dvd
[sourceLink asin="B000MTOM8A" asin_jp="" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 291 " aired=" April 1989 - Jan. 1996 "]

The original and according to some, the best. Dragon Ball Z is perhaps one of the most popular anime series among a global audience, with it being a staple of 2000s anime viewing for Western fans, showing on Cartoon Network, Toonami and CheezTV. In a series that is always willing to push the limits of scale, Dragon Ball Z takes a young Goku into the stars, pitting him against some of the greatest enemies the galaxy has to offer. With the franchise starting with battles against common thieves, Dragon Ball Z has Goku travel to alien planets to face world destroying alien emperors. Famed for its lengthy action packed battles, Dragon Ball Z is the intrinsic action/comedy in regards to anime, with its wacky characters and world never detracting from the personal stakes at hand, even when characters can be easily resurrected. Now that the series has been rebooted with Dragon Ball Super and various movies, the scale has put Goku against the power of the Gods in a brand new adventure.

8. One Piece

In a world of seas, pirates rule the waves with fierce power. After the promise of great treasure at the end of the Grand Line, Monkey D. Luffy assembles a crew to sail the seas to find it. With the power of the Devil Fruit giving characters extraordinary powers, each conflict absorbs a specific theme and the way in which battles are concluded rarely just comes down to “hit them really hard this time”. Whether it’s travelling through the desert, hijacking a train or saving an island from a tyrant, One Piece keeps the rules of its world loose, to allow for a new type of story as the journey continues. One Piece is the definitive most popular manga right now, constantly topping the sales charts as well as Weekly Shounen Jump’s rankings. The series is currently in the second half of the adventure, having passed the midway point. It’s a strong crew in regards to both their characteristics and their powers with each being unique enough to create a spectacle either fighting a formidable foe or tackling a simple obstacle.

7. Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic

[Information episodes=" 25 " aired=" Oct. 2012 - March 2013 "]

Magi is a much more recent entry into this list compared to the choices above. With myths coming to life, we follow Aladdin, Alibaba and Morgiana through a world of magic based on the world of the Arabian Nights. Playing out through a similar structure to One Piece, our cast stop off at various points throughout their adventure to solve a problem and get involved within that story. However, Magi is much more willing to separate its cast, letting them be reunited later, after they’ve completed their own personal story. Airing in 2012, Magi takes its opportunity to show off this world with bright colours and vibrant effects animation with a lot of great character animation to really get at the personalities of those we meet. However, as we go into the Kingdom of Magic series, the series ramps up to new heights with extreme powers and strength that takes the show to a whole new stage. The franchise currently has a spinoff airing following Sinbad on his adventures prior to the start of Labyrinth.

6. Soul Eater

Soul Eater dvd
[sourceLink asin="B008YRL6V8" asin_jp="" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 51 " aired=" April 2008 - March 2009 "]

We’ve had pirates, ninjas and the arabian nights, but Soul Eater is ready to take us into a world of horror. Although it isn’t a horror series itself, it completely adopts that theme in this high school action series. With the student base being split between Meisters and Weapons, Maka and Soul pair up to become the ultimate fighting duo. Fighting witches, demons and everything in between, the theme is what keeps Soul Eater alive and exciting along with director Takuya Igarashi’s excellent handle on comedy within his series. Shounen battle series don’t usually get such acclaimed directors such as Takuya Igarashi and his presence takes it to new heights within the genre along with genius composer Taku Iwasaki, adding rap insert tracks by Persona 3’s Lotus Juice. Soul Eater was a recipe for success from the very start with some of Studio Bones’ best animators providing cuts and an opening composed entirely of impressive background animation. Even its spinoff Soul Eater NOT did a great job of expanding its world for a new purpose.

5. The Seven Deadly Sins (Nanatsu no Taizai)

[sourceLink asin="B00O0CO5XM" asin_jp="" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 24 " aired=" Oct. 2014 - March 2015 "]

The Seven Deadly Sins is a shounen battle series flipped upside down. Instead of a show about an underdog getting more power and the ability to take on defiant villains, the characters of Sins have already gained all of that by the time the series has started. They’re already strong and they already have the knowledge needed to go ahead with their task. The problem is, they’re scattered and their weapons have been lost after a betrayal by their own kingdom. Whilst most of these series use flashback to give context to a character’s motivations, The Seven Deadly Sins relies on these lengthy flashbacks to tell its story and it does an effective job at tying them in with present day events. With an upcoming second season and a four episode special airing in Summer, The Seven Deadly Sins is famous for having incredible success in regards to its promotion of the manga. After the anime aired, manga sales for the series went through the roof, beating out One Piece in the charts for the first half of the year as the most popular manga series. Its place on the Nichigo timeslot in Japan is not to be understated and we can look forward to seeing more of it in the future.

4. My Hero Academia (Boku no Hero Academia)

Boku no Hero Academia dvd
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="B01DPAFRUE" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 13 " aired=" April 2016 - May 2016 "]

Airing in that very same timeslot as The Seven Deadly Sins, My Hero Academia is another series fuelled for great success in the future. In an age where superheroes have become the most popular thing in the world, the cultural influence has spread far and wide, including My Hero Academia’s world of superpowered individuals. Instead of the classic Avengers angle of superheroes saving people, My Hero Academia’s premise is closer to Sky High and I say that with the full knowledge that that was a terrible movie. But think of My Hero Academia is a good Sky High. A really good Sky High, in fact. With an exceptional display of character emphasised by the character designs of Yoshihiko Umakoshi, My Hero Academia always takes the opportunity to explore these important human moments, rather than just jumping battle to battle with a few cheeky quips added in. It’s a real character story about superheroes rather than a superhero story with characters that happen to be there. The manga is currently one of the most popular within Weekly Shounen Jump and I look forward to seeing more from it.

3. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood

Fullmetal Alchemist dvd
[sourceLink asin="B00KGFBZ3K" asin_jp="" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 64 " aired=" April 2005 - July 2010 "]

As the reboot of the classic 2003 series, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood brings in a unique appeal through its exceptional animation and fresh design. Whilst the 2003 series is still special in its own right, Brotherhood is famously easier to recommend and is the far more popular of the two series. Whilst it still is a battle series, a lot of the action is spread out across its run and many conflicts may not be resolved, resulting in these really neat quick skirmishes. Even though Edward Elric is indeed a strong protagonist, it’s many of the side characters and villains that really add weight to the narrative with their own personal arcs that all tie together into the larger battle at hand. You’ll find Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood on the top of most anime popularity lists as well as many favourites lists, with it being one of the most recommended shows for newcomers to watch, despite its 64 episode run. It’s still regarded as one of Studio Bones’ most valuable works, with several cuts of animation by the renowned action animators Yutaka Nakamura and Yoshimichi Kameda, displaying impact within every unforgettable battle.

2. Food Wars!: Shokugeki no Soma (Shokugeki no Souma)

[Information episodes=" 24 " aired=" April 2015 - Sept. 2015 "]

Get out your blades! And proceed to chop onions. Food Wars!: Shokugeki no Soma is an entirely different form of battle series, instead taking place through cooking. Adopting many of the narrative tropes and style of the battle shounen that do so well in Weekly Shounen Jump, Shokugeki repurposes them for a cooking battle that trumps much of its more vanilla competition. Reimagining cooking competitions like Master Chef and Hell’s Kitchen, Shokugeki no Soma regards cooking to be not just important, but penultimate. Each character has their own style or cuisine and it’s reflected in the same way as a fighter would with their own special abilities. With a second season on the way next season, Shokugeki no Soma is a part of the new age of Weekly Shounen Jump now that many of the big names within the magazine have faded. Like My Hero Academia, it’s a fairly new series and hasn’t really had the opportunity to expand as much as the magazine’s other properties. Hopefully we’ll start seeing Soma in our Jump fighting games soon.

1. Hunter x Hunter

hunter hunter DVD
[sourceLink asin="B0066HZSKI" asin_jp="" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 148 " aired=" Oct. 2011 - Sept. 2014 "]

Speaking of the new age of Weekly Shounen Jump, author Yoshihiro Togashi is certainly someone from the old age. As the creator of Yu Yu Hakusho and eventually Hunter x Hunter, he’s defined exactly what the magazine is all about. Whilst the series had an adaptation in 1999, it was incapable of continuing beyond what had been created thus far. But thanks to the series’ continuing popularity, even throughout various hiatuses, the series was greenlit for a remake, this time adapting the Chimera Ant Arc. Following Gon and Killua throughout various adventures, Hunter x Hunter is regarded for its exceptionally creative action sequences and the logic behind them. Each power has its own rules and the way in which these rules are exploited makes for a marvel to watch as we always understand exactly what each of the characters options are and what they need to achieve to win the battle. Each part of the series takes on a different genre entirely, with tournament battles, sleuthing in New York (Or rather, Yorknew) and even a ‘trapped in a video game’ arc, all with entirely unique narrative elements that reinvents what the series is about. Despite its 148 episode run, Hunter x Hunter is not something to be missed. And by the time it’s done, you’ll regret doubting it as you hammer on the doors of Shueisha yelling for more.

Final Thoughts

And those are 10 of the best battle shounen series out there. Let me know what your favourite shounen battle series are in the comments below.

They say you cannot learn about Japan through anime, and for the most part, it’s true. However, there are some anime that give us a small essence of Japanese culture, food, and its society. One such anime in the recent years has to be Fukigen no Mononokean. Teaching us about culture, supernatural beliefs, and some aspects about Japan, Fukigen no Mononokean was a fun anime that was a joy to watch and reminded us of older anime like xxxHolic. This season, we have 2 anime for you that will make you excitable as they are similar to Fukigen no Mononokean in some ways, especially when it comes to culture. Hang tight as we explain more!

Aoi is not your average university student. She possesses the power to see ayakashi. This has never been an issue for her and sometimes, she takes the time to feed them. One day when she was doing just that, a demon appears declaring that Aoi will be his bride to repay a debt her grandfather owes. Unwilling to sell herself for her grandfather’s debt, Aoi offers to pay it off by working.

Major Similarities Between Fukigen no Mononokean (The Morose Mononokean) and Kakuriyo no Yadomeshi (Kakuriyo -Bed & Breakfast for Spirits-)

1. Youkai Galore!

If there’s something that Fukigen no Mononokean has in common with Kakuriyo no Yadomeshi, it’s all of the youkai, or as Kakuyiro no Yadomeshi refers to them, ayakashi. Ayakashi refers to youkai that are above water, so there is that limitation, but overall, we get to know different ayakashi throughout the series and how they relate to the story or Japanese culture as a whole.

2. Getting to Know the Supernatural

Just like how Ashiya learns about youkai and their part in life, Aoi also learns about ayakashi and has to adapt to them in her life. Now that she is living in the Hidden Realm to pay off her debt, we get to see her interact with many ayakashi from big and small. Plus, we get to see how they have actual feelings and emotions! This dives deeper into how the Japanese view the supernatural and gives us a better idea of the legends and mythologies that many may forget about because they focus on things like the Shinto religion.

Liked Fukigen no Mononokean (The Morose Mononokean)? Watch Rokuhoudou Yotsuiro Biyori (Yotsuiro Biyori)!

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="crunchyroll" url="http://www.crunchyroll.com/Yotsuiro-Biyori" ]
[Information episodes="12" aired="April 2018 - ?" ]

Rokuhoudou is a Japanese tea shop that is run by four men, Gure, Sui, Tokitaka, and Tsubaki. These four men keep Rokuhoudou running and are constantly more than happy to serve any customer. Here, you can enjoy a warm cup of tea and wagashi surrounded by bishounen eager to please.

Major Similarities Between Fukigen no Mononokean (The Morose Mononokean) and Rokuhoudou Yotsuiro Biyori (Yotsuiro Biyori)

1. Something about relationships between boys...

One of the fun parts about Rokuhoudou Yotsuiro Biyori has to be that it has an all-male cast, which is a major hit with female fans. This is similar to Fukigen no Mononokean and contributes to its popularity. However, they are both somewhat slice of life-esque and all about the lives of these boys, revolving around their subsequent themes. For Rokuhoudou Yotsuiro Biyori, it’s about the cafe and how the boys wish to better it and the experience customers have.

2. A classic type of feeling

It must have something to do with Abeno and his secret room, but Fukigen no Mononokean has a classic type of feeling, but it could have to do with some rather traditional Japanese aesthetics for many of the settings. The same can be said of Rokuhoudou Yotsuiro Biyori which is set in a traditional Japanese cafe in the bamboo forest. This gives it that rather traditional Japanese feeling, like going to Kyoto might for many. Pair that with the love for tea, matcha parfaits, and wagashi and you have a bit of that traditional Japanese culture that isn’t always shown in anime.

Final Thoughts

If you’re looking for an anime with a little bit of Japanese culture, we hope we were able to provide it with our Japanese culture 201 course with anime from Spring 2018. Do either of these two anime interest you? Are you watching them and have something to say? Share everything in the comments down below!

Top 10 5th Gen Pokemon

5th Gen was an interesting time for Pokémon. Game Freak, sick of everyone ignoring their new creatures with each new game, decided to force players to only encounter new Pokémon in Black & White. This gave players a chance to really connect with 5th Gen Pokémon. People had no choice but to figure out their new favorites. No longer could fans retreat to the tried-and-true Pokémon of past generations. As a result, fans are a bit more familiar with 5th Gen Pokémon than they are of other generations. Black & White ended up shaping the impressions that people have about modern Pokémon design even today. We felt it only natural to rank who we felt were the most notable Pokémon of 5th Gen. After all, these are Pokémon still being talked about even as we prep for 8th gen next year!

10. Garbodor

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="pokemon.com" url="https://www.pokemon.com/us/pokedex/garbodor" ]
[es][information_general item1 = "Compañía" content1="___content1___" item2="Lanzamiento" content2="___content2___" item3="Géneros" content3="___content3___" item4="Plataforma" content4="___content4___" post_id="" ][/es]

Everything about Garbodor emanates filth. Its appendages are made of garbage. Its head is the remains of a torn trash bag. Even its breath is putrid, as Garbodor exhales toxic gas with every breath it takes. This is thanks to the steady diet of trash Garbodor ingests. The only way to rid an area of a Garbodor infestation is to introduce Grimers and Muks to their habitat, which is essentially cutting off an arm to save the entire body. Because of Garbodor’s trashy design, we can’t exactly say it’s the most popular Pokémon. In fact, it’s quite the opposite! Whenever you hear old-school casual fans of Pokémon (frequently referred to as “genwunners”) complain about how much better older Pokémon designs were compared to more recent ones, Garbodor is often the first to come up. They tend to not even know its name; Garbodor’s just “that trash Pokémon”. Sadly, Garbodor is always going to be infamous among the Pokémon fanbase as one of the least commercially appealing in the franchise. You can’t say it’s not memorable, though!

9. Scraggy

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="pokemon.com" url="https://www.pokemon.com/us/pokedex/scraggy" ]
[es][information_general item1 = "Compañía" content1="___content1___" item2="Lanzamiento" content2="___content2___" item3="Géneros" content3="___content3___" item4="Plataforma" content4="___content4___" post_id="" ][/es]

Should someone get this kid a belt? It looks like it’s having problems keeping its pants up. Actually, never mind; that’s just some of Scraggy’s leg skin. Scraggy’s body is fairly rubbery and loose, giving it a lot of durability. This is good, as Scraggy can be a tad confrontational. Scraggy really hates being stared at and will instantly challenge any Pokémon that makes direct eye contact. Maybe Scraggy should wait until it evolves into Scrafty, though, as it’s too young to handle tougher battles on its own! The Pokémon that people latch onto tend to be the cute or cool ones. These are the ones that people would love to keep as a pet or groom as a power fantasy. However, we tend to forget that Pokémon can come in a different variety as well; the silly kind. Scraggy isn’t a novelty Pokémon any more than something like Slowpoke, but its simple design is just so goofy you can’t help but get attached to it. The Pokémon Company must have realized this and pushed for Ash to acquire one in the anime, where Scraggy remained one of his constant teammates throughout most of the Black & White arc. They didn’t even bother evolving Scraggy because people love its base form too much!

8. Krookodile

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="pokemon.com" url="http://www.pokemon.com/us/pokedex/krookodile" ]
[es][information_general item1 = "Compañía" content1="___content1___" item2="Lanzamiento" content2="___content2___" item3="Géneros" content3="___content3___" item4="Plataforma" content4="___content4___" post_id="" ][/es]

This snazzy-looking Pokémon looks like it brought its own pair of shades. Krookodile exudes cool in a way that’s not traditional for the series. Generally, when you think of Pokémon you want on your team, you’re thinking of the really sick designs that exude dominance. Krookodile is more sinister. It may not be the strongest Pokémon out there, but you can tell just by looking at Krookodile that it’s not afraid to get its hands a little dirty. It’s the sleek and dangerous kind of cool, like a good mob boss. Of course, it helps that the anime advertised Krookodile a ton. One of Krookodile’s pre-evolutions, Krokorok, was a mainstay of Ash’s team during the Black & White arc. It came complete with its own set of shades, acknowledging the slick gangster design. During a climactic battle against Iris’ Dragonite during the Pokémon World Tournament semi-finals, Krokorok evolved into Krookodile and scored a win. What child couldn’t love Krookodile after that exciting match?

7. Emboar

[es][information_general item1 = "Compañía" content1="___content1___" item2="Lanzamiento" content2="___content2___" item3="Géneros" content3="___content3___" item4="Plataforma" content4="___content4___" post_id="" ][/es]

You might think that Emboar, with its dual Fire/Fighting typing, is based on a sumo wrestler. However, this is surprisingly not the case! Emboar’s design draws inspiration from the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West. Specifically, it’s based on the pig demon Zhu Bajie. Game Freak was continuing a theme they had started in 4th Gen with Infernape, who drew similar inspiration from Sun Wukong (aka The Monkey King). Maybe if more fans recognized Game Freak’s Journey to the West references they would have been more understanding as about their third Fire/Fighting starter in a row. People were were getting a little sick of this particular type pairing, and Emboar was the brunt of a great deal of good-natured ribbing. People were starting to lose faith that Game Freak would ever create a fire starter of a different dual typing though. After Emboar, Game Freak has gone out of their way to make sure fire fans get a more unique combo to end with.

6. Volcarona

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="pokemon.com" url="https://www.pokemon.com/us/pokedex/volcarona" ]
[es][information_general item1 = "Compañía" content1="___content1___" item2="Lanzamiento" content2="___content2___" item3="Géneros" content3="___content3___" item4="Plataforma" content4="___content4___" post_id="" ][/es]

Bug-types have always been the laughing stock of the Pokémon world. They were the completely worthless counter to Psychic-types in Red, Blue, & Yellow, with none of them learning any Bug-type moves outside of Beedrill. When Psychic-types and Dark-types started falling by the wayside in later generations, Bug-types continued to fall into obscurity. Their only other strength was going up against Grass-types, which were never dominant in the competitive game to begin with. It seemed like Game Freak was going to allow Bug-type Pokémon to continue their descent into worthlessness. That all changed with the introduction of several incredible new Bug-type Pokémon in Black & White, with Volcarona leading the charge. Bug/Fire was a totally unique type combination, which are always exciting to see in new games. That, combined with incredible special attack and access to Quiver Dance (which boosts the user’s special attack, special defense, and speed by one stage), Volcarona was a competitive force to be reckoned with. Black & White’s champion Alder even used Volcarona as his centerpiece Pokémon like Lance’s Dragonite or Cynthia’s Garchomp. Bug catchers everywhere rejoiced over Volcarona restoring the credibility of Bug-type Pokémon.

5. Hydreigon

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="pokemon.com" url="https://www.pokemon.com/us/pokedex/hydreigon" ]
[es][information_general item1 = "Compañía" content1="___content1___" item2="Lanzamiento" content2="___content2___" item3="Géneros" content3="___content3___" item4="Plataforma" content4="___content4___" post_id="" ][/es]

Does… that lizard have heads for hands? No, that’s not a creature from the works of H.P. Lovecraft. It’s Hydreigon, Black & White’s requisite pseudo-legendary Dragon-type. Thanks to Hydreigon’s unique Dark/Dragon typing and high special attack, Hydreigon found itself as a major force in the competitive meta-game of Black & White. In fact, Hydreigon’s reign of terror in 5th Gen may have been the straw that broke the camel’s back. Fairy-types, which are immune to Dragons and strong against Dark-types, were introduced in 6th Gen to address the growing imbalance of Dragon-types. We can’t say for certain that Hydreigon was the reason, as Dragon-types were really in need of a proper counter anyway… but that added resistance to Dark-types raises some eyebrows. Since then, Hydreigon’s competitive presence has fallen. Its popularity sure hasn’t, though. After all, there are plenty of Pokémon that are cute. There are a lot that are cool. There’s even a niche for goofy Pokémon. But how many Pokémon can claim they are legitimately kind of terrifying? We’d chance a guess and say slim to none. It’s not just the head-hands either; it’s those black and red eyes that line up perfectly with an internet troll’s idea for a creepypasta.

4. Chandelure

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="pokemon.com" url="http://www.pokemon.com/us/pokedex/chandelure" ]
[es][information_general item1 = "Compañía" content1="___content1___" item2="Lanzamiento" content2="___content2___" item3="Géneros" content3="___content3___" item4="Plataforma" content4="___content4___" post_id="" ][/es]

Pokémon don’t get more unique than Chandelure. Sure, most of the time Pokémon are stylized after plants or animals. You’ll occasionally get something inorganic like Magnemite or Voltorb. You can’t say you ever expected a Pokémon based off a chandelier though! Chandelure’s origins probably make a bit more sense to the Japanese audience. It’s based off a Hitodama; the fire spirits from Japanese folklore you often see in other anime and games. It’s a clever visual pun, combining the ghosts so familiar to your average Japanese fan with a more modern application. Maybe that’s why Chandelure keeps popping up everywhere. We’re not going to say it’s the most recognizable Pokémon out there, but Chandelure certainly finds itself included in side material frequently. In Smash Bros, Chandelure showed up as an enemy during the Smash Run mode, which gave it just a bit more presence in that game than your average Pokéball Pokémon. Chadelure even made it as a playable character in Pokken Tournament, making it the only playable 5th Gen Pokémon!

3. Zoroark

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="pokemon.com" url="https://www.pokemon.com/us/pokedex/zoroark" ]
[es][information_general item1 = "Compañía" content1="___content1___" item2="Lanzamiento" content2="___content2___" item3="Géneros" content3="___content3___" item4="Plataforma" content4="___content4___" post_id="" ][/es]

Believe it or not, Zoroark and its pre-evolution Zorua were the very first Pokémon we knew from Black & White! Game Freak had high hopes for the not-actually legendary Pokémon, hoping to achieve the same level of popularity that Lucario managed in Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum. Zoroark got an entire movie devoted to it an entire year before Black & White came out! Make no mistake: Zoroark was primed to be the face of the oncoming generation. While Zoroark never quite reached the same level of recognition of Lucario, it’s still a pretty notable Pokémon. Its central trait is that it’s able to create illusions so powerful that you’d never be able to tell you’re inside one. So, by 5th Gen, not only did we have Pokémon with the ability to travel through time and create life, we even had one that could distort reality as we knew it. The endless potential of Pokémon and the sheer mystery that surrounds them is encapsulated in Zoroark. We never know what’s in store for them next!

2. Oshawott

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="pokemon.com" url="https://www.pokemon.com/us/pokedex/oshawott" ]
[es][information_general item1 = "Compañía" content1="___content1___" item2="Lanzamiento" content2="___content2___" item3="Géneros" content3="___content3___" item4="Plataforma" content4="___content4___" post_id="" ][/es]

Never believe you won’t eventually be accepted. Just take a look at Oshawott! When we first got a glimpse of Oshawott, people mocked it. Its color scheme is busy, with a whopping total of 6 different colors on display. People weren’t thrilled with the departure from Pokémon’s traditionally basic designs, especially for the cute ones. Not only that, but that orange nose combined with that odd shell on its tummy made Oshawott look like a baby clown in a onesie. People were not thrilled, to say the least. But… fans looked into those little doe eyes and couldn’t help but eventually fall in love. Perhaps it helped that Ash had an Oshawott himself for most of the Black & White arc. Not only that, but it never evolved throughout the course of the anime, so young kids got tons of exposure to the otter Pokémon. Now, while you’ll still occasionally find the odd holdout still complaining about it, you’ll find even more people who love Oshawott and its final form, Samurott. You can’t help but want to coddle it like your own child!

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="pokemon.com" url="https://www.pokemon.com/us/pokemon-episodes/14_03-a-sandile-gusher-of-change/" ]

1. Snivy

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="pokemon.com" url="https://www.pokemon.com/us/pokedex/snivy" ]
[es][information_general item1 = "Compañía" content1="___content1___" item2="Lanzamiento" content2="___content2___" item3="Géneros" content3="___content3___" item4="Plataforma" content4="___content4___" post_id="" ][/es]

Sometimes you don’t need raw strength or gumption to succeed. Sometimes all you need is absolute confidence in yourself. When we first got a glimpse at the three starter Pokémon in Black & White, Snivy was the immediate favorite thanks to that smug look in its eyes. It was almost as if Snivy was saying to the audience, “Yeah, you know you’re going to pick me”. And pick it we did! In fan polls, Snivy has turned out to be the favorite starter of Black & White by a country mile. Of course, people weren’t simply reading too much into Snivy’s personality by its picture. Series artist Ken Sugimori has admitted that he was a huge fan of Rose of Versailles and based the designs of the Snivy evolutionary line off his observations of French royalty from that anime. To remain consistent with that vision, Snivy has been portrayed as overly proud and viewing itself as better than others in all Pokémon media. The Pokémon Adventures manga takes this a step further by making Cheren’s Snivy a clean freak who views anyone getting him dirty as an insult, staying true to its kingly disposition.

Final Thoughts

Sometimes 5th gen gets of a bad rap from casual fans because it prevented them from retreating to the safety of their favorite Pokémon. However, it’s an important generation, and we feel this list represents the effect Black & White had on the future of Pokémon. It’d be a shame to forget about 5th Gen, as there are still plenty of incredibly popular Pokémon that originated from it. Do you disagree? Did we miss any of your favorites? Ecchi equals power in Masou Gakuen HxH, thus making Hida Kizuna’s power level over 9000. Tasked to head up an elite group of female high school super soldiers, this inventive MC uses his wits and pervertedness to power up the girls before every battle. He came there only because it was full of chicks, and he’s gotten more than he can ask for. Are the dead walking? Yes. Are the oppai jiggling? Big yes there as well. Just because the world is ending doesn’t mean you can’t have a good time before you die. Komuro Takashi may have had to watch his best friend get ripped to pieces, but on the bright side, the girls he’s trying to survive with are mega ultra babes. You have to take small victories where you can get them in post-apocalyptic harem ecchi shows.

5. Monster Musume no Iru Nichijou (Monster Musume: Everyday Life with Monster Girls)

One after another, Kurusu Kimihito’s house just keeps getting filled with monster girls by the government. First a busty lamia, then a petite harpy, followed by a stacked centaur - is there no end in sight?! Bathing, love hotels, foreplay, bondage - this anime has it all and more. Don’t let the fact that the girls aren’t quite human slow you down, because it’s not stopping them.

4. Highschool DxD

Dying at the hands of a hot fallen angel on your first date isn’t so bad. Not when you’re resurrected by a smoking hot chick like the fiery Rias Gremory. Hyoudou Issei might have been impaled to death once, but if he’s not careful, he’ll end up bleeding to death from his nose. An anime that really toes the line between borderline hentai and ecchi comedy, Highschool DxD is that perfect way to scratch your itch for some harem ecchi.

3. Shinmai Maou no Testament (The Testament of Sister New Devil)

[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" Jan. 2015 - Mar. 2015 " post_id=""]

Sometimes your dad remarries and you get new siblings. Sometimes you don’t get along with said new siblings. And sometimes on rare occasions, your siblings are life-stealing succubi who are trying to mind control you out of your worldly possessions. That happens to Toujou Basara but, thankfully, he’s a super powerful badass so things are all good and fine for him. He even gets a harem out of it to boot. Yay! Testament of Sister New Devil is by far one of the lewdest anime on the planet. You have many, many scenes of sexual acts that go past borderline hentai and go straight to hentai, light beams, steam clouds and all. You also have one of the most varied and expansive harems an MC can ask for. He’s pretty much got it all. Don’t sleep on this one if you want more sexiness in your anime.

2. To Love Ru Darkness

[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" Oct. 2012 - Dec. 2012 " post_id=""]

Yuki Rito is one kind of special guy. For one, nearly every female introduced in the show belongs in his harem, even if they don’t know it. Even if they don’t have feelings for him, he’s going to be feeling them, and often. The guy can’t stand up on his own two feet for more than ten seconds. It’s actually a law of nature by this point. He slips and falls on the girls in his harem almost as fast as they fall for him. Groping, bathing, misunderstandings and the works abound in To Love Ru. If you see even one episode you know this show definitely belongs on a list like this.

1. Yosuga no Sora: In Solitude, Where We Are Least Alone.

[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" Oct. 2010 - Dec. 2010 " post_id=""]

Okay. So there’s harem ecchi, borderline hentai, and then flat out hentai. This show is more of a mix of all three at once. After moving to the countryside with his biological sister after the death of their parents, Kasugano Haruka reconnects with many of his childhood loves. And yes, this reconnection occurs physically. There are actual on-screen depicted sex scenes in this one, and Haruka is the only male main character on this list to actually bed the women in his harem. Of course, it’s in the omnibus format so he doesn’t have to suffer the fate of School Days’ Makoto. Oh, and did we mention his biological sister is one of the heroines? Yeah... they went there.

Final Thoughts

Boy, that list got steamy and fast. If you watch all the anime on this list, you’ll probably never be able to go back to regular harem ecchi shows for the rest of your life. It will change you! Or you may decide to cast all anime aside and go live in a monastery for the rest of your days. Both options are kind of extreme to be quite honest. Did you check out any of the shows on this list? Got any more that you think we missed? Let us know in the comments. Time to let your voices be heard!

There are many reasons why the harem anime genre is extremely popular, and one of the main reason why (probably) is the viewers can project themselves to the main character who is often a blank slate/zero personality surrounded by girls vying for his love and attention. And the second reason is to see lovely ladies with different personalities interact to the main character. The first reason is very straightforward and projecting oneself is a form of personal entitlement, it comes at the cost of the male character being an annoying, boring, undeserving, and with a bland personality. The second reason is far more complicated than you think because countless waifu-wars and millions of lives were lost because one side prefers a girl over the other. Harem anime discussions are very serious business. *ahem* This article is an update to our previous Top 10 Sexy Ecchi Harem Anime list back in 2015, but you can also consider as an extension to that article like a Top 20. Now you might be thinking: “Isn’t sexy and ecchi have practically the same meaning?” Both are not the same because ecchi simply means being raunchy and lewd. Not every sexy person you see is out to flash their panties at you. Just saying. Anyway, let’s cut to the chase and jump into Honey’s Top 10 Sexy Ecchi Harem Anime!

10. Yamada-kun to 7-nin no Majo (Yamada-kun and the Seven Witches)

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="B00XLUB49C" text="" url="" ]
  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: April 2015-June 2015

Yamada Ryuu enrolled to a new school far away so he can start a life and away from everyone who knew of his violent and delinquent nature. Sadly, he got bored at being productive so his old habits returned and he's back to his old self not taking classes seriously and getting into fights. As fate would have it, Ryuu bumps and trips into honors student Shiraishi Urara and they accidentally kissed! However, that's not the end of it because it turns out Urara is secretly a witch and they swapped bodies! Before descending into the madness that is harem anime, new fans of the genre should start out with this anime as a starting point. Yamada-kun and the Seven Witches is a harem-lite anime without the excess baggage like heavy fanservice, a wimpy male character, and his indefinite indecisiveness to romance a girl while keeping the theme of multiple girls longing for the MC’s affection. The main selling point of this series is the humor surrounding the witches and Yamada’s power to copy a witch’s power through kissing. Only a handful of female characters are in love with Ryuu, but that doesn’t mean the anime lacks in the sexy department. Shiraishi Urara, Odagiri Nene just to name a few are exceptionally lovely ladies. The anime is no Kimi no Na wa., but it doesn’t need to.

Things changed after Keita transferred to the same school as his sisters. He’s slowly getting attracted to them. So you’re a guy living with your hot step sisters who are madly in love with you and your parents don't mind you three getting all kinky, while you’re popular with some of the girls in school? 8. Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai (Haganai: I don't have many friends)

[sourceLink asin="B00UGQD2FS" asin_jp="" text="" url="" ]
  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: October 2011-December 2011

Hasegawa Kodaka is very determined to make a good impression and make friends along the way in his new school, but life isn’t really that simple that things ended up doing the opposite. Due to his blonde hair and intimidating look, his classmates and the entire school thinks he’s a delinquent and they avoided him completely. All was not lost however when Kodaka meets Mikazuki Yozora, a girl who is also having trouble making friends. After a brief talk, the two decided to start a new club that focuses on making friends and improve social skills. Soon enough a group of eccentric oddballs joined the club that is now known the Neighbor’s Club. Haganai isn’t a traditional harem anime that it focuses on the male lead character his developing friendship with the girls in the Neighbor’s Club without resorting too much to typical boob shots, panty shots, and the occasional wardrobe malfunction. You know how important Kodaka is in the story? He’s prominently in front of the DVD/BD cover. The girls are great as well and they didn’t fell in love with the guy unconditionally and it took a couple of seasons for the girls to show any romantic attraction to Kodaka. But if you don’t care of all that, the girls are very attractive, especially Sena with her long blonde hair, big breasts with a very plump build who often gets teased/abused a lot by fellow club member Yozora.

[sourceLink asin="B006LSSLF6" asin_jp="" text="" url="" ]
  • Episodes: 13
  • Aired: July 2006-September 2006

*deep breath* Louise Françoise Le Blanc de La Vallière is a young mage studying in the prestigious school of magic Tristain Academy. Louise has a problem, however: she sucks at magic that her spells often go BOOM. With her natural ability to make things explode unintentionally, her peers have given her the title “Zero Louise.” Her world changes after she summoned a boy from a failed summoning spell to call forth loyal familiars. The boy’s name is Hiraga Saito and he is now the unwilling “loyal” familiar of Zero Louise. Or is he…? Zero no Tsukaima is popular for many things like maybe it’s the anime-fied version of Harry Potter, or maybe the main female protagonist is one of the most tsundere characters in existence - Louise. At first glance, Zero no Tsukaima doesn’t look like a harem anime because the main male protagonist Saito isn’t some dumb guy and is a capable fighter and he did get the girl in the end. But as the series progressed, we find out that Saito has a habit of flirting with other girls ranging from the seductive resident maid, ultra-busty elf, and to the queen of a nation with all that royal assets. But really, can you really blame someone who happened to save the world many times, good looking, all of the ladies flock around him?

Kampfer’s story make no absolute sense and you might as well give up, and there are so many absurd moments in the show that you can’t help wonder if the animation studio were high in weed or were on an LSD trip. In order to enjoy Kampfer, you need to throw your brain out and focus on what’s important: the lovely and criminally sexy ladies. Natsuru has no special traits and is totally a dense oaf, but the girls find him sexually attractive… either in his original male form or his transformed female form for that yuri flavor.

Since our hero is the nicest guy on Earth, and with some “help” from Agent Smi-Ms. Smith, more monster girls have fallen in love with Kurusu and are now living with him. Is he the luckiest guy on earth, or the unluckiest? Monster girls, especially the ones in states of undress, are mostly in hentai anime, but thankfully Monster Musume gave fans an alternative: remove the sex but double down on the lewd stuff. Who knew watching a snake girl wearing a pair of panties can be so kinky? Kimihito is perhaps one luckiest person on Earth.

3. SHUFFLE!

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="B005HVWVU4" text="" url="" ]
  • Episodes: 24
  • Aired: July 2005-January 2007

Humans, gods, and demons coexist together in the world of SHUFFLE!. Our main character Tsuchimi Rin is your normal high school boy doing normal things was surprised to see the kings from the god and demon realms moved in into Rin’s neighborhood. It appears the daughter of the realm of gods Sia and the daughter of the realm of demons Nerine has met with Rin at a young age and the two are love with him. Will Rin accept one of the girls’ love and be the new king, or will go with his childhood friend Kaede? SHUFFLE! is one of the most successful visual novel adaptations along with ef: a Tale of Memories, Kanon, and the extremely popular CLANNAD series. Like most VN adaptations, SHUFFLE! follows the same route of one main guy surrounded with multiple love interests, but there’s a slight twist of the anime showing its VN roots by adapting story arcs of the main girls Sia from the realm of the gods, Nerine from the realm of the demons, childhood friends Asa and Kaede. The story arcs don't really go anywhere because our hero Rin wants the neutral route by not choosing a final girl. And it’s understandable because it’s doubtful any guy would stick to one rather than being surrounded by these beautiful and sexy princesses. If the afterworld has beautiful princesses like Sia and Nerine, people would be committing suicide left and right so they can go to heaven or hell… and both are good options.

2. Saenai Heroine no Sodatekata (Saekano: How to Raise a Boring Girlfriend)

[sourceLink asin="B00QGGNRY8" asin_jp="" text="" url="" ]
  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: January 2015-March 2015

Aki Tomoya is a hardcore otaku who loves anime, video games, visual novels and writes in anime blogs (spoiler: every Honey Anime writer). Captivated by the beautiful stories he has watched and read, Tomoya is inspired to make his own video game and express his emotions to the world. And in order to do that, he recruited his female classmates to form a doujin circle and make his game a reality. This is the most modern harem anime you can get that, most of the part didn’t use the basic harem tropes you have come to expect. Tomoya is your typical nerd with thick glasses, short black hair, and an otaku, inspired to make his own visual novel. Through his conviction and dislike towards 3D girls, Tomoya recruited his classmates and cousin (all happen to be girls) to help him make his dream game about romance no matter what. Since they’re dabbling into romance territory, the girls slowly develop some feelings towards Tomoya and sometimes the girls opted for a more hands-on approach for inspirations. Basically, Tomoya just created his own harem and he has no idea he made one.

1. Tenchi Muyou! Ryououki (Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki)

[sourceLink asin="B008NNY9HQ" asin_jp="" text="" url="" ]
  • Episodes: 6
  • Aired: September 1992-March 1993

Masaki Tenchi is your typical 17-year old boy spending his summer break doing chores in his family shrine. Ever since his father told him about their ancestors defeating a demon and sealed it in a cave 700 years ago, the curious Tenchi accidentally released the demon known as Ryoko who looks like a human girl. The breaking of the seal then sent a signal into space and called four more aliens who happen to be female. Tenchi soon discovers the secret of his ancestry and deals his new life with a group of alien girls who somehow are romantically attracted to him. If you’re looking for the very first anime to have popularized harem anime, then look no further than Tenchi Muyou! Ryououki with harem tropes that are still being used to this day. The setup is very typical involving a normal teenage boy who stumbles upon immeasurable power and is surrounded by very beautiful alien girls with varying personalities. And like harem anime, there are a lot of fanservice moments tucked in between a story of a guy discovering his existence in the universe.

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="B00005FXQL" text="" url="" ]

Final Thought

The first anime to introduce harem or the concept of a person who is romantically sought out by a cast of characters, it’s Urusei Yatsura, but it was Tenchi Muyo! that pioneered the modern harem genre focusing on the wish fulfillment of the Everyman. Love Hina is also a big contributor here as it pioneered some aspects of modern harem anime like focusing on heavy fanservice comedy like boob grabs, panty shots, a guy entering a room with girls naked, and focusing on male characters with less redeeming features apart from being a nice guy. Visual novel adaptations also made a big influence by focusing on one guy having multiple love interests vying for his love and no multiple story arcs. If you check out an anime that is an adaptation of a visual novel or an eroge, chances are that anime is a harem anime.

Harem anime isn’t exclusively about a guy with a harem of girls. The same thing can be said to one girl surrounded by many guys, and these shows are often referred to as “Reverse Harem.” We didn’t add these to the list because, traditionally, harem anime is all about a guy surrounded by girls and the fanservice of these “reverse” harem aren’t exactly super ecchi in nature. Well, some of them. And that’s our updated list! Harem is part of the anime culture and it won’t go anytime soon because the fan demand is very high. And that means you better fortify your house because sooner or later you’ll be caught in these endless waifu wars.

With so many funny or just plain good harem anime out there today, which ones prove their mettle and go beyond the simple harem focus to develop a good plot to keep us entertained the whole time as well? Here we’re going to look further into ten different anime that all have a harem feature as well as a good story to keep you watching. Believe me, we haven’t forgotten about all that PLOT either!

10. Is This a Zombie?

Aikawa Ayumu is a zombie, that wasn’t always a zombie. As it so happens he was a regular high school student until he crossed paths with a serial killer who subsequently did what serial killers do, killed him. Eucliwood Hellscythe decided to revive him as her own personal servant in the form of a zombie; due to unforeseen circumstances he now has to fight Megalo! With enough plot and PLOT to keep you entertained through the entire series, it’s a fantastic watch with very interesting characters and a fun storyline.

Rito Yuuki just cannot find it in himself to confess to the girl he’s in love with, Haruna Sairenji. Moping in the bathtub one day from still not being able to tell her, a very mysterious, very naked girl appears in the bathtub with him by the name of Lala Deviluke. Lala is an alien from the planet Deviluke and is the current heir to the throne; instead of marrying a suitor from her home planet she instead decides she wants to marry Rito! Overall this is a very fun anime to see with an awesome amount of comedy mixed with a great story. [hide]

Armored exoskeletons are built by Japan and named Infinite Stratos. The IS skeletons are only wearable and useable by women until Orimura Ichika, a 15 year old boy, accidentally discovers he too can power these incredible machines. Because of this and the confusion on how a male can use the IS, he is sent to the all women school to learn how to properly use the exoskeleton. The anime itself starts off a little slow in my opinion but if you can stick through that, it’s a great anime to see. The harem nature doesn’t take away from the main story at all which was something I was worried about, but instead gives it something extra and actually helps to further along the story.

Youto Yokodera is a pervert, but being at that age can you blame him? There’s a legend that says if you make a wish to the cat statue up on the hill it will be granted, so that’s just what he sets off to do. When he gets to the statue though he encounters Tsukiko Tsutsukakushi, a girl who loses her ability to display her emotions because of a wish made at the cat herself. This is one of the funniest harem/ecchi anime I have personally seen and with no shortage of PLOT it really is a blast to follow through this series!

A disease has run rampant across Japan (possibly the entirety of the world) and is turning people into zombies! A group of high school students only wish is to survive through this new apocalypse, to survive and thrive. While this show was cut off short (for now) it still features that harem factor but isn’t completely taken over by it; which is beneficial in this case. By far this anime has received a massive US following – and rightly so! The complete package of excitement and comedy with ecchi and harem tones really pushes this anime to the top of most lists!

The 3rd Season of Overlord. The year is 2138. The online game Yggdrasil, which was once popular, is about to be cancelled. Player Momonga, his comrades, and their prosperous guild have silently been waiting for this moment. However, even once the servers have shut down, the game doesn’t log them out, and the NPCs seem to have suddenly developed wills of their own. Outside of the guild, a whole new world is developing.

Three Episode Impression

[ua_synopsis text="So…. this is something. Overlord is back and ready to conquer the lizard people?! Yeah, the story actually shifts its focus from Momonga and focuses more on the lizard people that Cocytus is supposed to subdue (Spoiler alert: he fails). The story is good in and of itself telling how they form an alliance and fight back against an army of the undead. Crusch is very cute and her romance with Zaryusu is blunt yet enjoyable as it moves on. However, it is getting a bit slow with this as we want to see more of Momonga! We are hoping that he comes back full and center soon. In the meantime though, we will continue to watch, we just hope that the whole season is not about the lizard people!"]

In the realm of the dead where Ayakashi (ghosts) reside, there is a long-standing inn known as Tenjinya. Aoi is a female university student who, thanks to her recently deceased grandfather, inherited his ability to see Ayakashi. Excellent at cooking, just when Aoi is feeding some rural Ayakashi one day, she is suddenly swept up by a fierce god who is the master of Tenjinya. The master declares that the collateral for the debt her grandfather left behind is that she must become his bride. As a plan to recover from this hopeless situation, she agrees to work at Tenjinya to repay the debt but…

Three Episode Impression

[ua_synopsis text="Upon seeing the first episode of Kakuriyo no Yadomeshi, I thought I was watching what is essentially an anime version of some rather overdone manga themes from the likes of Love Monster to Black Bird, but there’s some talk about Aoi opening up her own restaurant, so I figured that this anime would probably do more than that. So far, Kakuriyo no Yadomeshi has proven itself to be entertaining although it does not stray from the typical supernatural shoujo mould since Aoi does not do anything but be absolutely pure hearted and special to the different ayakashi around her. While it’s not different from the manga Love Monster or Black Bird, it’s still one of the rare shoujo-supernatural anime on the market with Kamisama Kiss and maybe Noragami following similar styles, though the plots are different. Unlike Noragami, though, I suspect Kakuriyo no Yadomeshi will be fluffier and have a lighter plot, though who can say at this point? So far, it’s an enjoyable anime although I wonder if it’ll soon slowly descend to the food/cooking anime route what with them constantly talking about Aoi opening her own restaurant. We’ll see how it goes."]

[en]Synopsis[/en][es]Sinopsis[/es]

(The 3rd season of Boku no Hero Academia.) It all started with the news of the birth of a 'luminescent baby' in Keikei City, China. Since then, 'Paranormalities' have been discovered all over the world, but their cause still remains unclear. Now, we have entered the superhuman age, where eighty percent of the world’s total population are born with some kind of idiosyncrasy, known as a Quirk. While criminals and villains who use their supernatural powers for evil are steadily on the rise, there is also a society of heroes who use the very same Quirks to stand against and save people from villains and disasters. The fictional heroes that everyone idolised have become a reality. It’s in this kind of world that Izuku Midoriya (known as Deku by his friends) hopes to become a hero and sets out to enroll in Yuuei, a Hero Academy known for producing countless famous heroes. However, it just so happens that Deku is one of the twenty percent of the population that is born without any powers - a 'Quirkless' loser. One day, Deku meets his very own hero rolemodel, and the fate of his future changes dramatically. Friends, teachers, rivals, and enemies - whilst facing many different characters and challenges, Deku starts his journey to become the best hero he can be. A new story is about to begin with this new generation of hot-blooded heroes!

Three Episode Impression

[ua_synopsis text="Boku no Hero Academia is finally back… we say that, but it hasn’t been even a year. However, we are insulted with a recap episode for the first one. Skip it if you won’t want to waste your time. The next two episodes are all about raining camp to make the students more powerful. The one good thing about this series is that even though they show the whole class, each one has lines and a moment helping you remember who they are and their powers. Even though it’s data we already have and know well, it’s good. Kota is a new child who appears at the camp who has issues. His parents were killed and it makes him angry. He will be here for a bit for sure. The villains are spying on the camp as well so we can expect an intense fight coming. In fact, episode three shows that more is coming. Starting now, it’s going to get good. Buckle up and get ready!"]
