[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" January 2018– March 2018 " post_id=""]

Akira Tachibana was formerly a track star of her high school’s team before suffering from a leg injury which hindered her chances of continuing. Now Akira spends her time listlessly attending high school, while ignoring advances from interested boys, and going to her part time job where she harbors a secret crush for her manager, 45-year-old Masami Kondou a kind divorced man who is none the wiser to her affection. Yet despite the huge gap in age, will Akira work up the courage to confess and how will Masami react? After the rain is a romance anime that examines the circumstances of how we fall in love and who we fall in love with. The anime seeks to espouse a sense of realism in matches that we deem to be unhealthy, or illogical. It should be noted that while the anime certainly has its light-hearted elements, it does cover mature themes in it’s plot so may not be the go-to for those who want a traditional school romance story. Regardless, the animation is quite pretty, and the plot is intriguing enough to earn it a place on this list.

7. Sukitte Ii na yo. (Say “I love you”)

[sourceLink asin="B00EZ227X2" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 13 " aired=" October 2012– December 2012 " post_id=""]

Mei Tachibana, having felt the sting of betrayal and distrust from her friends in grade school, has since preferred the company of herself to avoid the same kind of hurt. Yet circumstance brings her to bump into Yamato Kurosawa, a professional model and one of the most popular boys in her school. Adverse to wanting to get to know him, a situation thrusts them together where they become closer than she would have liked. Yet overtime and through struggles to communicate and deal with new friends she never asked for, Mei uncovers feelings for Yamato she did not previously have, and Yamato tries to convey his feelings for Mei. A classic school romance tale of outcast girl meets popular boy. This anime deals with what happens when one or both parties are not yet ready to pursue their feelings at full force all the while dealing with the unwanted attention or teasing from their classmates. This is a great anime for those who enjoy a social outcast story.

6. Orange

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="B01HNOSG92" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" July 2016 – September 2016 " post_id=""]

Sophomore high school student, Naho Takamiya has a bit of an odd start to the school year when she receives a mysterious letter that appears to come from herself, 10 years into the future, when she is 26 years old. Naho is skeptical as any rational person would be when receiving such a letter, however when events detailed in the letter begin to unfold in her life, she slowly becomes convinced. Yet the letters do not only focus on her but on a new student named Kakeru Naruse whom Naho is asked by her future self to keep watch over. Will Naho’s life change for the better by following the letters or will she come to regret her choices the same as her future self. Orange is a school romance and drama anime that tackles sensitive subject matters of depression and regret. Given the anime has letters traveling in time, some may argue it is a fantasy or sci-fi anime, however these elements are non-existent outside of the writing of letters. We do not often see depression or mental illness alluded to in school romance anime for one reason or another, however Orange does a good job with incorporating all the necessary tools to balance those themes with the romance. If you are looking for something more serious this is for you.

5. Just Because!

As well as Hazuki Morikawa, a band member, and Mio Natsume, someone who may still hold a candle for Eita. During a time where students are deciding their future, how will this familiar face’s sudden arrival impact their lives, what feelings will be rekindled? Just Because! makes another fine addition to the school romance anime list. It picks up during a tumultuous time for the characters, right as we are between significant stages of our young adult lives. In that regard, there is a great sense of playing catch up with relationships in this anim. It may have the audience and characters worried at first, whether there is enough time for the romance to head in any satisfying direction. This is perhaps what distinguishes this anime from others on the list in how effective it handles the continuation or end of relationships past high school.

From the studio that brought you My Teenage Romantic Comedy SNAFU! and Hinamatsuri comes a lower key school romance anime. As per the summary, Tsuki ga Kirei is focused on the budding relationship between a boy and girl in middle school. 1. Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso (Your Lie in April)

[Information episodes=" 22 " aired=" October 2014 – March 2015 " post_id=""]

Kousei Arima was a piano prodigy when he was younger, though he was viewed as being like a metronome in his robotic but perfect reproduction of classical music. One day, while at the top of his game, his world came crashing following the death of his mother. Finding himself no longer able to hear his own notes, he quit performing in competitions. Years passed, Kousei remains in the same rut he was before, unable to hear his own music. He coasts through a bland a life with his friends until he encounters the effervescent Kaori Miyazono, a beautiful violinist who might just change his outlook on life and help his music. It would not do justice to leave Your Lie in April off a list of school romance anime. This heartfelt, and at times heartbreaking, tale shows the beauty in the world that we can only find in relationships that point it out to us. This anime does a great job at highlighting the importance of mutual support and kinship in relationships and the difference that can make. On top of the story this anime brings stunning visuals and a fantastic soundtrack to add to your classical music playlist.

Miyazawa Yukino's social standing was threatened by a new-comer. Arima Soichiro seemed to be better in everything - grades, looks, humble and likeable. She is not pleased with her new position as number 2 as she was used to getting all the praises and respect of her fellow classmates. How will jealousy and envy transform into love as the both of them adapt to his and her circumstances. Besides all of the issues apart, the story is a well-balanced tale of how two seemingly competing individuals eventually get together in a school setting. No doubt old, it can be considered a classic of a romance and slice of life anime.

8. Kokoro Connect

[Information episodes=" 13 " aired=" Jul 2012 - Sep 2012 "]

Odd things are happening to members of the Cultural Research Club. Without any explanation, a supernatural occurrence caused all 5 members to switch bodies at random times. While it starts off as bewilderment, all 5 members will soon learn the deep dark secrets that each individual hold as they live through the personal lives of the body of the person they switched with. Can they accept the harsh reality and maintain their relationship as friends? Even more so, will some of them accept the feelings of the other party, especially if it was not meant to be known yet. Kokoro Connect had an interesting premise. No longer will characters observe the world from their standpoint. As different aspects of their lives are modified and changed. They will have to live the lives of others both at school and at home. While many would presume that it is a strong intrusion of privacy, the show did great in portraying romance as different characters come to terms with the dark past and traits of their crush. Who though? We are not here to spoil any plot though!

Poor Kuronuma Sawako is just a misunderstood girl at school. Her niceness and quiet demeanour is often misinterpreted as being awfully similar to the ghost character of hit horror movie, The Ring. Having the same long straight black hair of Sadako, the main antagonist is more than enough to send everyone running away in fear. Luckily for her, she happens to meet the popular Kazehaya Shouta. Will this be a new chapter in her life? Kimi ni Todoke is actually a very simple but yet beautiful tale of school romance. Even though Sawako is isolated for most of her life, she maintains a sweet and innocent personality. It makes you happy to see her getting along with Kazehaya at school and in the classroom. This is a classic romance anime that is adapted from a hit manga and for good reasons too!

Shizuku is only interested in scoring the best in any exams. Focused only in her studies at school, how can someone who was nicknamed "Dry Ice" ever find romance? Enter Haru, gentle and caring on one side but an uncontrollable monster at the other. These two social misfits seems like a very bad equation for love but hey, love is blind. While the romance element takes a while to emerge in the series, it is worth the wait. Both characters are odd in their own way and there may even be times in which you will feel that there is no progress at all. Opposites do attract however, and there will definitely be romance in the classroom!

It was a chance encounter, but one that will change the lives of both Okazaki Tomoya and Furukawa Nagisa. While going up the slope towards his school, Tomoya met the sickly and frail Nagisa. Maybe it was fate, maybe it was purely coincidental or it could even be the inherent goodness in Tomoya. Regardless, he took it upon himself to be Nagisa's friend and helped her adapt into high school life. The events that follow can only be surmised as an exemplary form of love and gives meaning to what it truly means to give your all to that special somebody. If anything, Clannad is known throughout the industry, is for its emotional conclusion and stunning animations at its time, it can be said to be Key's best work of art. Generally well received, most will say that it is a tearjerker and an anime that even holds the potential to change the world for you. It is subjective, but it is definitely a masterfully crafted story and perhaps even the quintessence of a romance anime. It goes without saying that we rank it at Number 1.

[en]Synopsis[/en][es]Sinopsis[/es]

When a young girl named Natsu opens her eyes, she’s surrounded by the ocean. Then, she, along with Arashi, Semimaru, and Botan, ride the stormy seas to arrive at an island. This island is covered in a sprawling, unexplored jungle with massive plants. They are attacked by sinister animals and bugs one after another, thrown into struggling to just survive and are constantly threatened by death. That’s when someone who simply calls themselves ‘guide’ appears and explains to them a completely unbelievable plan. It is then that they learn that while they were still young and healthy, they were cryogenically frozen in order to avoid humanity’s extinction. The ambitious plan is called ‘The 7SEEDS Project’ and they have become ‘the seeds’ to bring humanity back in a decimated world. They are astonished to learn that they were the humans chosen for this project. They now live assiduously in a world completely transformed into a hostile environment as members of the 7SEEDS Project.

Sword Art Online: Alicization Introduction and Story

Kirito and his friends are back once again for another dive into the virtual gaming world! This time, Kirito is helping with a project known as Alicization, testing the limits of the human soul. When an accident causes Kirito’s brain to sustain serious damage, he vanishes from the hospital, sending Asuna Yuuki and his other friends on a search that will lead them halfway across the world. In the meantime, Kirito wakes up in the virtual world he has been working in, unable to return to reality. He soon finds himself on a quest with his new friend Eugeo, to retrieve an old friend of theirs from a mysterious fate…

Why You Should Watch Sword Art Online: Alicization
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="crunchyroll" url="https://www.crunchyroll.com/sword-art-online" ]

1. Animation Quality

Once again, A-1 Pictures has done a great job with the Sword Art series, getting consecutively better with each arc they work on. The characters are crisply drawn and their movements are fluid, making them realistic despite many of them being nothing more than virtual characters! The virtual world that Kirito and Eugeo travel in is beautiful, with the background scenery done far better than any other in the Sword Art franchise. While there is a certain episode including more graphic content than any of the past arcs, the rest of the action scenes are executed perfectly, bringing back the updated style we saw displayed in Ordinal Scale.

2. The Music is a Perfect Accent to the Action

Sword Art Online has been consistently good in the music department, and the Alicization arc is no different! The music coincides with whatever is happening in the anime and adds tension, despair, or sadness when it needs to. The same themes from the older arcs come back into play here and there, reminding the viewer of the good moments in Sword Art. And with LiSA’s opening and ending themes once again capturing the feeling of the anime perfectly, the Alicization arc is a delight for your ears throughout each episode!

3. Promising Setting

You may have thought we’d seen it all when it comes to virtual settings in Sword Art Online, but the world that Kirito and Eugeo find themselves in is actually unique enough to be interesting. Most of the characters in this world are AI souls, grown in the world until they developed into their own little civilization. The arc is moving in a direction of discussing not only morality through the eyes of these new people, but also the idea of creating life and playing god. As we learn more about how the world works in the new virtual game, we are all the more interested in its history!

[ad_middle class="mt40"]
Why You Should Skip Sword Art Online: Alicization

1. It’s the Same Story - Again

Sword Art Online is plagued by its original Aincrad arc, so that even when the story seems to have brand new ideas, they are really just a copy of the same story. Kirito wins every fight he participates in, being just as overpowered as usual. Alice, who seems as if she could be a really interesting and strong female character, is merely the damsel in distress and device for Eugeo to start his journey, much like Asuna became as the first arc ended. We are interested in this brave new world Kirito has found—but not if it is going to be exactly like all the other Sword Art story plots.

2. No Real Character Development

You would think with how long some of these characters have been around that they would finally learn something or grow—but you would be wrong. Kirito is the same bland protagonist who wins at everything he does and preaches his heroic ideals to others. Meanwhile, Asuna and the other characters from Kirito’s earlier adventures merely serve as the background exposition so that viewers will know what is going on. The only character who has any real change is Eugeo, who manages to overcome his programmed thoughts to fight for justice; yet even then, he seems to go right back to how he was before, letting Kirito take the lead yet again.

3. Slow and Lengthy Exposition

While there are parts of the Sword Art series that could have done with more explanation, the Alicization arc has more than enough exposition for all of them! The moments where Asuna is learning about the project seem to drag on. This arc has a few interesting parts, but everything seems slow and weighed down by the overall pacing. Despite skipping over most of Eugeo and Kirito’s journey to the capital, everything about the anime seems to have slowed down considerably, even the characters’ urgency to complete their quest.

Final Thoughts

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="VVCL-1354" text="" url="" ]

The first cours of Sword Art Online: Alicization is probably the best of the series in visual and musical terms. The story starts out interesting enough, but the characters never change and neither does the plot, making this just another anime in which we see Kirito win all his battles. We hope that the second cours will improve upon these issues. What did you think of Sword Art Online: Alicization? Let us know in the comments!

5 Worst Dressed Characters in JoJo no Kimyou na Bouken (JoJo's Bizarre Adventure)

Anime characters have always been known to dress eccentrically, but the JoJo series takes it one step (or two, or ten) further. Especially in the later parts like Vento Aureo and Stone Ocean, mangaka Araki has taken to dressing his characters in ridiculous outfits that nobody else would be able to get away with. Some of these looks are so tacky that they shoot the moon and loop back around to being amazing, but occasionally, the experimental fashions just fall fantastically flat. Let’s take a gander at the 5 worst dressed characters in JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure!

[ad_top2 class="mt40 mb40"]

5. Diavolo

The mysterious boss of Passione is so protective of his identity that he brutally murders anyone who even tries to investigate who he is. Speculative interpretations of this enigmatic and dangerous man exist early in the manga, depicting him as a shadowy mafia don in a pinstriped black suit. But in reality, that couldn’t be farther from the truth. Diavolo sports disheveled pink hair with black spots, purple pants, and what looks like a lacy shirt with coattails that blends into intricate tattoos on his arms. It represents his schizophrenic personality well, but the strange black designs and raver hair just don’t scream “main villain” to us.

4. Melone

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="B00BZ142M0" bookwalker_id="" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]

Minor villains from Vento Aureo aren’t safe from horrible fashion choices either, and La Squadra Esecuzioni gets the worst of it. And, even among such illustrious company, Melone’s cutout jumpsuit and mask combo stands out as particularly baffling. The otherwise interesting circle-patterned fabric is cut in such a way to expose random squared-off chunks of the right side of his chest, and his mask covers one of his eyes for no real reason. Oddly, he can still see through the fabric just fine. Instead of the spy catsuit look that Melone was probably going for, this turned out to be a mess.

[ad_middle]

3. Vanilla Ice

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="B00BY0N0RK" bookwalker_id="" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]

Stardust Crusaders takes place in the ‘80s, but most of the character designs are timeless enough to be from any decade. Sadly, though, Vanilla Ice looks just as dated and tacky as his musical namesake. Dio’s most trusted subordinate pairs his glam rock hair with loud purple jewelry and an unfortunate leather jacket straight out of an ‘80s action film. He tops this outfit off with a dangerously high-cut thong in place of any other legwear. If Iggy and Avdol had to suffer, couldn’t they have been attacked by someone with just a bit more class?

2. Rikiel

Winning the “worst dressed” award for Stone Ocean is no small feat since there’s no shortage of competition. Lang Wrangler, Miu Miu, Anasui, Johngalli A... for a group of characters named after fashion designers, these guys sure have nasty taste in clothes. But what propels Rikiel up to the top of the list isn’t just his cow-patterned, V-necked jumpsuit with a turtleneck that looks like it’s threatening to strangle him, it’s that he’s one of Dio’s sons. Dio is the undisputed king of making outrageous clothes look amazing, a trait that he passed on to his first son Giorno. And while Ungalo and Donatello Versus don’t look great either, Rikiel’s abomination of an outfit is truly an insult to his infinitely fabulous father.

1. Oyecomova

Inheriting absolutely none of the slick, stylish charm of the Santana song after which he is named, Oyecomova stumbles his way through his short villain arc with our pick for the worst outfit in all of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure. Perhaps any of the individual elements could’ve worked on their own, but the effect of them all together reminds us of mixing too many colors of paint into a sickly brown. He wears an unfocused ensemble of maroon velvet clothing, featuring a hat through which several curly dreadlocks stick out at awkward angles. He’s also got a netted veil over his face, clock-themed floral tattoos on his sickly white skin, and... are those Christmas lights around his waist? We’re just glad we only had to look at this train wreck for three chapters.

Final Thoughts

Araki sometimes throws absolutely hideous character designs at us, but at least they’re all memorable. Even the worst outfits stand out as something that no one else could’ve come up with, so we’re still glad that they exist. It wouldn’t be as bizarre of an adventure if they didn’t. What did you think of our list? What JoJo outfits miss the mark for you? Let us know in the comments, and thanks so much for reading!

Top 10 Ambitious Wake Up, Girls! Shin Shou (Wake Up, Girls! New Chapter) Characters

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" bookwalker_id="" cdj_product_id="" text="crunchyroll" url="https://www.crunchyroll.com/wake-up-girls/episode-3-i-am-my-ponytail-749729" ]

While definitely not the first idol anime, Wake Up, Girls! Has done a good job of standing out amongst other shows with an array of complex characters with unique talents that add to their diverse personalities instead of relying on one gimmick to carry a character. The more realistic narrative of idol work as a business instead of just a fun time with friends adds an air of realism for those who desire a more serious story with their cute singing girls. In the second season, Wake Up, Girls! Shin Shou, there’s a greater focus on not just idol activities, but on how much outside work is necessary to make it as an idol. The characters not just in WUG but in other idol groups and industry professionals have to find creative ways to reach their goals. Ambition is not always put in a good light, nor is it always a characteristic of nice people. It is, however, necessary for those who are serious about becoming idols who can bring smiles to others. Of all the hard workers in Wake Up, Girls! Shin Shou, here are our top 10 ambitious characters!

[ad_top2 class="mt40 mb40"]

10. Hisami Nanami aka Nanamin

Nanamin seems a bit full of herself at first, but she holds herself to high standards and considers the way she conducts herself very important. She tries to brush off her own nervousness and give off a powerful and confident image even if she feels she’s not quite earned it. She does dearly love everyone in WUG and even pleads with her parents to allow her to live in a shared dorm instead of finishing high school at home. Having the support of her parents would have made for an easier school year but the group and her friends mean she’s willing to sacrifice convenience in order to continue growing with WUG. Nanamin might complain about not wanting to do something but she’s more likely to be pushing or lightly chastising other members for not reaching their potential.

9. Okamoto Miyu

Despite her self-description as “twin-tailed and incompetent”, Miyu has a bubbly and hard-working personality. She may not feel particularly skilled but her acceptance at doing things despite not feeling prepared is actually a strength of hers. She gets momentarily overwhelmed at times but that never causes her to give up. She simply finds a bright side and keeps trudging on. When WUG members weren’t gaining enough familiarity with their solo projects, Miyu decides to start a web show despite not having any experience. Because of her comfort in learning and failing and doing things she’s not familiar with, she recovers much faster than most of the other member’s when they feel like they’ve failed. Miyu has the very important skill of pushing on and she knows little things like disappointment or difficulty won’t stop her from achieving her dreams.

8. Hayashi Ayumi aka Hayamaru

Hayamaru is a bit of a dojikko (clumsy girl) but she’s incredibly earnest. It’s usually because she gets overwhelmed or overly happy she ends up getting hurt or falling over. Despite the somewhat clumsy way she handles things, Hayamaru is completely serious about her goal to be an idol like Mayushi. Even though it borders on weird obsession, her ambition has led her to help out more around the house, try again in the face of utter defeat, and politely argue with others so she can be given a chance to prove herself. She’s quite happy to do grunt work if it means proving herself as well as helping the members of WUG who she loves so much. She learns from listening to and watching her idol senpai just how important constitution in the face of adversity is.

7. Kikuma Kaya aka Kayatan

Kayatan is one of the older members and usually is very composed. Once you get the fires burning though, there’s no stopping her! One of the best examples of this in Shin Shou was episode 4 when she and Minyami went on a variety show with some comedians. They were all offered food and were expected to provide an entertaining commentary but the girls initially did not deliver. After being chided for being idols and thus not having what it takes to comment on food, Kaya’s fiery spirit bursts forth! She yells “Don’t underestimate the calories and idol can burn!!” Before vigorously scarfing down the whole plate. The reason they’re there is to get more fans for WUG and she won’t let potential new fans be dissuaded! Even after she makes a name for herself as an incredible eater, Kayatan becomes worried about her weight gain. At first, she tries to diet all by herself and does an incredible but worrying job of counting calories. She then decides to turn this into an opportunity to reach even more people by starting a dieting blog. This not only encourages her to diet less desperately and more healthily, but does indeed help spread WUG to more and more people. Kayatan does a good job of turning adversity into chances for success.

6. Kondou Mai aka Maimai

Despite her cute nickname, Maimai runs a tight ship. As the leader of I-1club, she expects top performances from each of the members. She does this out of love for the group though as she wants everyone to reach the stars together. She’s encouraging as well as demanding but that works well for these girls who pride themselves on being in the top idol group. The members respect and like her but she’s not afraid to get serious both on and off the stage.

[ad_middle]

5. Nanase Yoshino aka Yoppi

From her impressive background alone in modeling and acting, it’s clear Yoppi has got ambition. She’s very mature for a 16-year-old and is a clear choice for the leader of WUG. Yoppi is not one to shy away from difficult things even when she’s taken by surprise. Despite the slap in the face of being told she’s not doing a good job when she tries to return to modeling, Yoppi keeps at it eventually finding her niche. The group gets surprised with the ultimatum of ‘I won’t give you new music unless you write the lyrics yourself’ despite none of them having any experience. Yoppi tells them ‘it’s not about whether we can or can’t, it’s just something we have to do.’ Her calmness and determination despite the task being so foreign help reassure the other members and put them on the track for success.

4. Suzuki Moka aka Mokaga

Mokaga is a very determined and hard-working girl for an idol in general, let alone one so young. In Shin Shou, Mokaga is the center of I-1club at least for part of the series. She’s usually curt with others, especially outside her own idol group. She does care for the members of I-1club but that affection is often hidden under a haughty air. She doesn’t allow her feelings to make her soft or give others a chance to surpass her which often leads her to keep people at bay. However, her dreams are not only clear but within her grasp. She wants the attention on herself and she wants to be someone worthy of keeping it. When her position is threatened by the head of the company, she goes so far as to yell at him and say she won’t accept being cast aside from something that entirely wasn’t her fault.

3. Shimada Mayu aka Mayushi

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" bookwalker_id="" cdj_product_id="B01M0GVG8P" text="" url="" ]

Mayushi ends up being one of the most ambitious members of WUG despite her initial refusal to join the group. By Shin Shou, she is happily and totally dedicated to helping WUG reach I-1 levels of fame. Because of her previous experience in a top ranking idol group, she knows just how much effort it takes to rise to the top and how little it takes to plummet you back to the bottom. When the president of Green Leaves demands the girls get outside work in order to further promote WUG, Mayushi does her best to meet all the expectations pushed on her. She has by far the busiest schedule of the members but never loses her positive attitude or determination to help out around the house. She would never put someone else down to benefit herself, but she pushes herself to the max both physically and mentally because her goals are so important to her. It’s not enough to simply do something well, she also wants to rise above expectations. When she thinks a suggestion may help the script she’s working on, she boldly brings it up to the writer and director.

2. Iwasaki Shiho aka Shihocchi

Shihocchi has it all, a respect for authority, determination to fulfill her obligations, and the ambition to see things through no matter what. Even though she doesn’t want to be around Mayu after their falling out, Shihocchi acts entirely mature and friendly until she and Mayu are alone. She devotes herself to her role and there’s not a hint of forced concern for Mayu’s character. As the center for NEXT STORM, she also has to balance idol activities while working on a drama. Things get even more complicated when she has to replace Moka for a spell when she becomes injured. Juggling I-1club and NEXT STORM as well as acting is extremely draining but she doesn’t complain. Shihocchi knows that every opportunity is a chance to prove herself in the eyes of her company and her fans.

1. Tange Junko aka Shachou (President)

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" bookwalker_id="" cdj_product_id="" text="crunchyroll" url="https://www.crunchyroll.com/wake-up-girls/episode-2-this-is-our-home-749727" ]

As the president of Green Leaves, it’s no wonder Shachou is ambitious. Surely she couldn’t run a successful talent agency without grit, resolve, and connections which she has in excess. She often asks too much from those around her be it patience or super-human acts, but she also will do anything in her power to make WUG successful without totally destroying the girls. While she seems mostly to fork over the difficult things to manager Kouhei but she’s willing to make sacrifices as well. At one point she proudly proclaims that ‘if you shook my wallet upside down, nothing would come out!’ after pouring all of her money into advertising for WUG’s tour. She’s not above manipulating people to do favors for her if it will benefit her company or her girls. While she sometimes has questionable intentions, it’s clear she’s definitely someone you want on your side.

Final Thoughts

While arguably Shiraki who oversees I-1 is the most ambitious, he’s a rather boring and borderline evil character who only sees these girls as a means to make sales. He can’t give any concern to how the girls feel which honestly is only sustainable for so long. In the entertainment industry, you need to have guts and sometimes you may bump heads with people when you’re fighting for the same dream. WUG understands this well but still tries to be positive role models for others. After all, their dream is not just to become famous, but to stay true to themselves while doing so. Girls, Be Ambitious!

Goblin Slayer Introduction

Anticipating a grand adventure on her first mission, a new priestess joins a rookie team to defeat a lower level enemy, goblins. Unfortunately, what should have been an easy mission turns horrifying when the goblins ambush the rookies and leave the team all for dead. Thinking the end is nigh, the priestess is luckily saved by a mysterious knight. Known simply as the Goblin Slayer, this man clad in armor is known for only one thing: killing goblins to rid the world of every last one of the beings. Now teamed up, these two adventures will begin a journey that will both bring them closer and equally test their resolves.

[ad_middle class="mt40"]
Why You Should Watch Goblin Slayer
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="crunchyroll" url="https://www.crunchyroll.com/goblin-slayer" ]

1. Goblin Slayer’s Main Character

Aside from the fact that the show—Goblin Slayer—also matches the main character’s name, Goblin Slayer himself is truly a beast of an MC. Not only does the goblin eccentric killing machine just focus on the task at hand, but he does so while never showing any sign of weakness. While the mask on Goblin Slayer’s face does make one wonder if he is grimacing during the tougher moments, it equally gives him the absolute perfect level of mysteriousness. No wonder why several of the main girls in Goblin Slayer love the dude so much. We love Goblin Slayer ourselves just because he’s just so darn strong!

2. Simple but effective characters

With names like Priestess, Elf, Lizardman and Goblin Slayer, you’d almost worry that Goblin Slayer’s cast of heroes and characters would be very one dimensional. Luckily, Goblin Slayer’s arsenal of warriors is fleshed out over the course of 12-episodes quite nicely. You come to learn Goblin Slayer’s dark past and feel for the warrior clad in armor, the same for Priestess who was initially so innocent but became stronger as she was put through numerous trials alongside Goblin Slayer. Nevertheless, these simply named heroes and heroines truly are deeper than they seem and while we don’t get full back stories on each—though we can assume the future seasons will do that for them—we get just enough to be satisfied with them.

3. Dark fantasy done well

We can’t lie and say Goblin Slayer nails the dark fantasy genre—that title goes to Berserk in our minds—but we can say without a doubt that it does just enough to do the genre justice. At times, Goblin Slayer doesn’t hold back with some rather R rated content but it doesn’t constantly slam you with unnecessary violence or nudity either. It melds just enough regular fantasy and dark fantasy to keep fans of both genres happy. The first episode alone shows the darker moments of what to expect with Goblin Slayer and the episode following dims down the darkness with a more laid-back episode. We do hope season 2—whenever it airs—is a bit darker in tone, but season 1 was perfectly fine and that’s all that matters for now.

Why You Should Skip Goblin Slayer

1. Speaking of violence…

Goblin Slayer isn’t for the faint of heart readers. At times, there are some truly dark moments with rape, sodomy and sexual assault sewn into the narrative. If you watched the series on Crunchyroll, you probably saw the warning of adult-like content that wouldn’t be suitable to all ages and that wasn’t a warning to skip over. We met numerous anime viewers who were appalled by episode one of Goblin Slayer and we understand that for some, this kind of content might bring back repressed memories/experiences. If you aren’t into very mature content, you might want to skip on Goblin Slayer.

2. Not White Fox’s best animation

Goblin Slayer isn’t a bad looking anime, let’s make that clear first. Though, we have seen a lot better from studio White Fox and that’s why we know some won’t particularly care about Goblin Slayer’s animation style. While there are a lot of truly well animated sequences with some stellar fights—especially against the hobgoblin—Goblin Slayer tends to look pretty average at best. We also noticed a lot of strange CGI moments involving the main character himself which threw us off against the usually solid backdrops. If you’re critical of animation—which we try not to be—then you might find some weakness in Goblin Slayer as a whole.

3. Needed more episodes

We know it’s not an easy feat to animated any series in this current generation. Most studios have to take on several series at the same time and divvy up their teams into smaller units to handle the workload. Unfortunately, that means most series get delegated to only 12 or so episodes and we feel that does ruin Goblin Slayer a bit. With the light novels already at 8 volumes—as of writing this review—Goblin Slayer has a bit of story it could still go into. Yet, we now have to wait for a hopeful season 2—even though we did get an ending card saying Goblin Slayer would return—to release sometime in the near future. That just means now we have to wait…and waiting kind of stinks when it comes to anime with uncertain futures.

Final Thoughts

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="crunchyroll" url="http://www.crunchyroll.com/goblin-slayer/episode-7-onward-unto-death-778473" ]

Goblin Slayer isn’t a complicated dark fantasy series and it truly isn’t the best we’ve ever seen. Despite all that, Goblin Slayer still has a lot more going for it positively than negatively due to its wicked main character, the cool fights that take place in the series and the overall feeling it invokes while watching. We are so happy a possible sequel of Goblin Slayer might be released in the near future, but for now, we are fine soaking in what we witnessed from its 12-episode run. About Senran Kagura Burst Re:Newal

Senran Kagura Burst Re:Newal—which JUST released on January 22nd—brings the 3DS’ action to modern hardware with a full 3D remake and a fresh retelling of the story that has captivated so many fans around the world. This fast-paced brawler provides updated combat mechanics and character models, as well as the new Burst mode for a... voluptuous bonus. Re:Newal also includes a bunch of new outfits and options if you’re favorite part is to customize your favorite girls’ looks and styles. Honey’s got ahold of the exclusive ‘At the Seams’ limited edition which includes all kinds of bouncy goodies! Read on for all the deets.

On the Outside

Proving that great things sometimes come in small packages, the Senran Kagura Burst Re:Newal ‘At the Seams’ Limited Edition boxset comes contained in a relatively compact box adorned with the girls lined up in matching frilly outfits, looking sexy and adorable all at once. Like they do. The back gives us a glimpse of the bonus items inside—6 ‘Busty Besties’ (rubber keychains), 2 OSTs, and exclusive DLC—as well as a preview of the action and the game’s key visuals. Simple, sweet and to the point. When you open the main box, there are another two boxes inside! One is the box containing the actual game and the soundtracks, which is also the ‘Tailor-Made’ limited edition—basically the same as ‘At the Seams’ but without the keychains. This box has a beautiful foil background and showcases some of our girls hanging out on some steps being themselves. The back of the box has more scenes from the game and a preview of the soundtracks inside. The box with the keychains is red and decorated with tiny cherry blossoms and reads “Bountiful Beauties. Busty Besties.” A clear panel showcases the adorable keychains without even needing to open the box if you’re keeping things in ‘mint condition’.
[ad_top2 class="mt40 mb40"]

On the Inside

Now to the most exciting part! Inside the ‘Tailor-Made’ box, we find the game in its standard presentation; key visual on the front, a preview of the game and key art of all the girls on the back. The Soundtrack holder has our favorite artwork in the entire bundle! The cover showcases Yagyu and Hibari being cute in bikinis, while the inside has a more covered up but simply adorable Hibari in a raincoat. The CDs are a bit steamier, each with a chest-shot of a girl holding a scroll in their cleavage. Hot! The Busty Besties box opens up to reveal six rubber character straps with display stands and chains giving you the option of displaying them or taking them with you wherever you go. Now, while you may notice from the pictures that the straps are very cute and unique, there’s a reason these are called ‘Busty Besties’ that may not be immediately apparent. These cuties are more 3D than most keychains, bringing their bustiness to life with rounded little boobs! The girls are paired up in silly poses and making silly faces and are just too cute to handle. Hibari and Haruka dancing, Katsuragi and Hikage about to eat, and Yagyu teasing Mirai with a fish on a pole (our fave!) are just half of the scenes included.

Bonus Features

We already got two soundtracks and a dozen cuties to display or carry around, but there’s more! Some non-tangible bonuses come in the form of exclusive in-game downloadable content like episodes that reveal new details of Yumi and Miyabi’s histories prior to meeting Asuka and Homura, all sorts of in-game DLC uniforms, and a playable Yumi!

Honey's Final Verdict:

Senran Kagura Burst Re:Newal delivers an authentic recreation of the original game while ensuring that series fans will have plenty of new content to look forward to, and with all these extra goodies, it’s the gift that keeps on giving! Honey’s Anime definitely approves. Whether you get the limited editions for the bonuses or just the game on its own, Senran Kagura Burst Re:Newal will not disappoint, whether you’re a newcomer or an avid fan of the series. Have you already given Burst Re:Newal a spin? Are you planning to? Seishun Buta Yarou wa Bunny Girl Senpai no Yume wo Minai Introduction

Sakuta Azusagawa is a second-year student in high school who finds himself seeing a rather strange sight one day at the local library. Dressed in a bunny girl outfit is a young woman who seems to be invisible to all patrons aside from Sakuta. Quickly, Sakuta realizes that this young girl is dealing with a strange affliction called Puberty Syndrome which affects each person quite differently. Sakuta will need to help this bunny dressed girl—who later reveals herself to be Mai Sakurajima—and remove her problem before she fades from existence. However, little does Sakuta realize that this is only the beginning of his battle with those afflicted with Puberty Syndrome.

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="crunchyroll" url="https://www.crunchyroll.com/rascal-does-not-dream-of-bunny-girl-senpai" ]

1. A rather unorthodox romance comedy

The beauty of Seishun Buta Yarou wa Bunny Girl Senpai no Yume wo Minai is that unlike most romance comedies in the world of anime, this one uses a rather peculiar method of delivery that works quite well. Thanks to the supernatural element from the Puberty Syndrome, Seishun Buta Yarou wa Bunny Girl Senpai no Yume wo Minai delivers nice amounts of drama with a good blend of romance and comedy in spades. Mai and Sakuta’s relationship as it develops is constantly tested due to various incidents that seem to form around our main man. Equally, comedy ensues often due to misunderstandings and just random moments like when Sakuta re-meets his old crush but now in a middle schooler’s body. Seishun Buta Yarou wa Bunny Girl Senpai no Yume wo Minai is funny, dramatic and romantic, and that makes it a rollercoaster of a show.

2. Each arc is quite impressive

The light novel versions of Seishun Buta Yarou wa Bunny Girl Senpai no Yume wo Minai has each volume following a new Puberty Syndrome incident for Sakuta to rectify. In the anime adaptation, several episodes focus on each incident and we can honestly say that there was never an arc we truly didn’t enjoy. While some arcs—such as Mai and Rio Futaba’s arcs—were stronger than others—namely Nodoka Toyohama’s arc—even the weaker arcs still provided some entertainment that kept us intrigued from start to finish. This is helped by the strong writing of the series that gives each character a fleshed-out story and makes them appeal to audiences from both a sympathetic and or empathic perspective. Mai for example fears being forgotten by others and that is a feeling many of us in the world can truly relate to. Seishun Buta Yarou wa Bunny Girl Senpai no Yume wo Minai does an excellent job with each arc and ultimately makes the narrative flow smoothly despite only several episodes focused on each arc.

3. Mai and Sakuta

Easily one of the best elements of Seishun Buta Yarou wa Bunny Girl Senpai no Yume wo Minai comes in the form of the two main characters, Sakuta and Mai. We loved watching their relationship blossom in Seishun Buta Yarou wa Bunny Girl Senpai no Yume wo Minai and truly felt the love these two characters had. As stated above, Sakuta’s involvement in various Puberty Syndrome cases drama to befall the two in various forms but even through those problems, both Mai and Sakuta continued to stay close and persevere. Most romance anime live or die off their main characters and how their relationship is handled. Luckily, Seishun Buta Yarou wa Bunny Girl Senpai no Yume wo Minai does a phenomenal job with our two love birds and it’s why we loved watching them get closer each week.

Why You Should Skip Seishun Buta Yarou wa Bunny Girl Senpai no Yume wo Minai

1. Arc based shows aren’t for everyone

Many anime fans will say that arc-based series can be a double-edged sword. On one hand, you get to see stories that change and evolve with each passing arc but on the other hand, you tend to have characters fade away as their time to shine fades away. Seishun Buta Yarou wa Bunny Girl Senpai no Yume wo Minai doesn’t avoid this issue as each arc gives us a lot on one girl but when their arc ends, they tend to become lesser characters again. Mai and Futaba escape this fate as they stay in the limelight but girls like Tomoe Koga and Nodoka Toyohama end up becoming more like secondary characters. It’s a shame as both girls are pretty strong characters when they do have arcs devoted to them but once their stories are done, we see them only in passing moments. If you end up growing attached to either girl, you might find Seishun Buta Yarou wa Bunny Girl Senpai no Yume wo Minai to be kind of cruel to your waifu.

2. The ending

The ending of Seishun Buta Yarou wa Bunny Girl Senpai no Yume wo Minai is where we are very mixed emotionally here at Honey’s Anime. While Seishun Buta Yarou wa Bunny Girl Senpai no Yume wo Minai ends on a cute note—and there is a planned movie to be aired in 2019—it equally feels unfinished. Seishun Buta Yarou wa Bunny Girl Senpai no Yume wo Minai seems to be very reliant on the planned movie but a series shouldn’t rely on a movie to make for a nice conclusion. In our minds, we could have seen Mai and Sakuta kiss—which they technically don’t do—and then from there, had signs of more to come. Unfortunately, we get a kiss on the cheek and then a cute couple of scenes which end Seishun Buta Yarou wa Bunny Girl Senpai no Yume wo Minai on a meh note. Is this a reason to skip out on Seishun Buta Yarou wa Bunny Girl Senpai no Yume wo Minai? Well, if you don’t like series that need a movie to conclude them, then yes, we say you might want to skip Seishun Buta Yarou wa Bunny Girl Senpai no Yume wo Minai. However, if you can wait for the Seishun Buta Yarou wa Bunny Girl Senpai no Yume wo Minai movie we honestly feel the ending is just more of an annoyance than a reason to hate on the show.

Final Thoughts

Seishun Buta Yarou wa Bunny Girl Senpai no Yume wo Minai was a series we found little wrong with. Each episode and each arc brought us tons of enjoyment and even made our emotions shine as various characters were tested in some rather realistic ways. Despite the fictional theme of Puberty Syndrome, Seishun Buta Yarou wa Bunny Girl Senpai no Yume wo Minai does a great job of almost making these weird incidents seem more like teaching methods for life and that was a surprise indeed. We honestly loved Seishun Buta Yarou wa Bunny Girl Senpai no Yume wo Minai but did you? Let us know your thoughts about Seishun Buta Yarou wa Bunny Girl Senpai no Yume wo Minai in the comments below and be sure to sound off on some of your favorite moments from the series. About Madhouse

[caption id="attachment_251734" align="aligncenter" width="560"] A PANEL FILLED WITH SIGNATURES FROM THE VOICE ACTORS OF A PLACE FURTHER THAN THE UNIVERSE.[/caption] Madhouse is a production studio that has continued to create titles that are popular not just in Japan, but around the world. What is the source of their charm and energy? TOM's very own Ryota Fujitsu, sat down with Kenji Nakamoto and Atsuko Ishizuka, the producer and director of A Place Further than the Universe, one of 2018’s hit titles. [caption id="attachment_251735" align="aligncenter" width="560"] ONE PUNCH MAN, A TITLE WITH HIGH-QUALITY ACTION SCENES, BECAME INCREDIBLY POPULAR BOTH IN AND OUT OF JAPAN.[/caption]

Exclusive Interview

TOM (Ryota): Before you entered Madhouse, what kind of image did you hold of the company? Nakamoto: I wasn’t that knowledgeable about anime, but when it came time to find a job, I decided to try my hand at anime and applied for Madhouse. At the time, all I knew was that it was a company that did the titles directed by Yoshiaki Kawajiri, like Ninja Scroll. So when I came for an interview and I saw the poster for Azuki-chan, a series that I liked a lot, on the door, I wondered why it was there (laughs). That was when I realized that it was only natural for an anime studio to have various directors working on various titles at the same time. That was around the same time when Madhouse had begun working on a number of TV series, so even though they hadn’t had regular job openings before then, they suddenly needed a lot more staff and they hired me. Ishizuka: Actually, I didn’t know anything about anime companies when I joined, either. I decided that I wanted to join the anime industry when I started job hunting. When I finally started researching anime companies, I realized that a lot of the anime titles that I enjoyed regardless of genre were made by Madhouse. It made me feel that their titles were diverse and that it was a company where I could try a lot of new things. When I actually joined, I grew to see that the studio actually does have its own characteristics and colors. TOM (Ryota): What do you mean by colors? Ishizuka: What I’ve realized by watching many different titles is that titles made by Madhouse have rich art. Because of that, our target demographics are generally higher in age. We’re good at that kind of animation, which also connects to our popularity overseas. I only realized that after I joined the company, though. Nakamoto: I believe that most anime companies have their own characteristics, but Madhouse is a company that handles very diverse titles, from adult titles to kids’ shows, TV series, movies, comedies, and serious dramas. I feel that one of the roots of Madhouse is that spirit of trying anything we think is interesting. Because we have such a varied history, I believe that anyone could find at least one Madhouse title that they enjoy in their lifetime. TOM (Ryota): Madhouse is a studio that churns out directors. Do you think that the corporate culture has an effect on that? Ishizuka: There’s no mistake in saying that Madhouse is a great training ground for directors. As Mr. Nakamoto said, the way we as a studio consider titles, is the idea of properly making fun titles or bringing forth interesting projects. Because of that, we search for the best way to show that particular title’s charms, and to do that we must place importance on the director’s opinions. In other words, the director must be a specialist in knowing how to make people have fun. Because we respect their opinion, that means their responsibility is greater, and they also must have the power to lead a team of staff members. This is a place where you can polish your skills for managing group work and your talent as a creator pursuing entertainment. TOM (Ryota): Do you feel that Madhouse is a big company or a small one? Nakamoto: Hmm, I wonder. Because I work here, I don’t really know, but I don’t feel like it’s particularly big. It isn’t all that small either, so maybe medium? (laughs) Ishizuka: (laughs) But it is a size where you can naturally run into people throughout the company. Unless you really hate other people, you can spontaneously come into contact with someone else. Nakamoto: There are studios that split each title into different rooms, but in our case, everyone works on the same floor. The production team and other staff members of every title work in the same area so that probably connects to our feeling of collectivity. Ishizuka: Depending on the space, the person next to me might be working on a completely different title. I’ve never thought about it, but that sort of thing might be a good breath of fresh air, too. Nakamoto: When I joined the company, it was in Asagaya. The office was set up in a similar way, but that building was a particularly good one. The ceilings were high and you could easily take a lap around the whole company, which meant the ventilation was good, too. When I had something to do, I would go out of my way to walk around the whole company. That way, I could see who was working on what and how. We’re still on one floor and that’s fine, but it isn’t as easy now. Ishizuka: These hallways have corners, after all. TOM (Ryota): Here’s one of the questions that Tokyo Otaku Mode received from an international fan. “Please tell me how you became a director.” Ms. Ishizuka, you originally worked freelance, so why did you join Madhouse and how did you choose to become an anime director? Ishizuka: When I was a college student, I wanted to work in entertainment, especially anime. But at the time, I didn’t have any friends who made anime and I had to struggle alone to come up with ideas on how to express things. However, the art that I drew and the ways I expressed things in anime were closer to artistic animation. Of course, my production scale was small and I didn’t have the time or technique to create a long story. What I wanted to do was to create entertainment like the TV shows that many people watched as kids, but I realized that it was very difficult to do that on my own. Because of that, I decided to work as a member of a production team rather than as a solo artist. That way, I could search for new methods and increase the solutions at my fingertips. Because there were many things I couldn’t do, I yearned to be in a studio with lots of other people making anime. TOM (Ryota): So you wanted to make titles made by people for people. Ishizuka: That’s correct. TOM (Ryota): Mr. Nakamoto, did you also join Madhouse with the desire of wanting to make a specific type of title? Nakamoto: I didn’t have any specific idea at the time. I just wanted to be involved in fantastic projects. I’m not the type to be particular about subjects or themes, but I’d rather try stuff that might be interesting. Producers don’t decide things on their own. I have multiple meetings with directors and scriptwriters to finalize plots, and our different opinions about how things should go or where things should lead contribute to the story. It isn’t always like that, but in the beginning, I’m fine with just trying things that are interesting. For example, for A Place Further than the Universe (following: A Place), we went through some stormy times (laughs). TOM (Ryota): I’ve heard that there were many ups and downs before you finally got to the current “a high school girl aims to go to Antarctica” plot for A Place. Is there a reason that it was reworked so much? [caption id="attachment_251728" align="aligncenter" width="560"] ©YORIMOI PARTNERS[/caption] Ishizuka: The skeleton for A Place was the desire to create a story where high school girls work hard and grow. Because of that, the result of their growth was important and constructing the story where we could see their future in the last episode was a major point. So, when we were working on the plot, there were moments when we couldn’t see their futures and we had to scrap the story and look at the characters again. Nakamoto: There were many opinions given, and in the end it ended up being whether or not the characters and story worked as film. We aimed for that and quarreled over what needed to be included, which made it more precise. Ishizuka: That’s right. Instead of just throwing ideas at each other, we put all the details on the table and then I or the writer, Juuki Hanada, would think hard about them. TOM (Ryota): Fans want to know how you come up with your wonderful ideas, but do those ideas become a success due to the many meetings that you have over them? Nakamoto: I think that ideas come from someone’s inspiration or impression. Whether or not we can combine them properly comes from hearing everyone’s opinions. Ishizuka: The good thing about speaking with everyone is that you can come up with ideas that you normally couldn’t by yourself or reach a conclusion that you never expected. TOM (Ryota): Mr. Nakamoto, as a producer, what do you keep in mind in order to make meetings good ones? Nakamoto: When we’re stuck in meetings, sometimes it just falls silent. At those times, I don’t know what to say, so instead I just end up eating all the snacks on the table (bitter laugh). But the atmosphere is important. When you’re in a meeting with people who are extremely self-asserted, it just becomes strained and it doesn’t go well, so I do keep that in mind. Ishizuka: He really eats a lot (laughs). It gets really funny and it makes me laugh. When I or Mr. Hamada fall quiet, suddenly we’ll start hearing crunching noises next to us. Because the silence has been long, it might be weirdly stressful. But there are times when I’m quiet, not because I’m stuck, but because I’m trying to figure out in my head the best way to construct the story. That’s why I don’t feel that being quiet for even ten minutes is a long time. TOM (Ryota): How frequently do you have those meetings and how long are they? Nakamoto: For an original title, we have them around once a month at first. Then the closer we get to production time, it becomes once a week. We don’t decide how much time it will take. Sometimes we’re finished in an hour, sometimes it takes five or six. It really depends on what we’re talking about. TOM (Ryota): What’s the interesting part of original titles? Ishizuka: Starting completely without restraints is fun because we can proactively challenge what we want and think about what we’re looking for. I consider that the most interesting part. However, that’s also scary. TOM (Ryota): Scary? Ishizuka: Starting from a blank page means the pain of creation is bigger and we must give it our all. It’s so important that we work hard that it’s like we’re putting our lives on the line, but the harder we work, the scarier the results are. If we don’t get the results we’re looking for, or if it’s all just a big failure, then it means everything we’ve gambled has been for naught. Because we do not accept the excuse that we just didn’t try hard enough, we end up leaping right in. Original titles are created from that fear and those battles, so they’re rich. After we’ve completed our battle, like in the case of A Place, the joy that we feel when people tell us that they were emotionally moved is tremendous. Because we wager so much, what we get in return is also huge. That richness is the finest part of challenging an original title. Nakamoto: Making an original means that even though I work on the show, I don’t know how the characters will end up, so it’s a lot of fumbling. Working towards that unknown conclusion feels like the creators, the characters, and the audience are all going on a trip together, which is one of the interesting parts of an original title. Unlike an adaptation, there’s no one who knows how it will end, so even if you come up with different theories, no one knows the ending until it actually happens. One of the fun parts of creating an original is having everyone enjoy the show equally that way. TOM (Ryota): What is necessary to work in the anime industry? Of course, that changes depending on your particular job. Nakamoto: It depends on your job, but whether or not you are observant, thoughtful, and a quick thinker is really important. If you’re in production, then those traits are necessary. If you’re in direction, you probably need talent, but you know whether or not you have that before you try by looking at those around you. I don’t think it’s a job that you can do just because you want to, but there are people who do it on talent that others recognize and others who work hard for that purpose as well. TOM (Ryota): Ms. Ishizuka, what do you look for in a director? Ishizuka: If you just want a job where you make direction choices, then you can do it with the basic skills you’ve learned. But if you want to become a creator that can move people, then that’s not enough. If you want to grow, then you need to be thinking 24/7 about whether you can think of yourself as an enemy, how you see the world normally, and how to make other people happy. Also, because directors work within a group, you also need to have both the strength to fight yourself and the flexibility to work with others. TOM (Ryota): What do you mean by “thinking of yourself as an enemy”? Ishizuka: If you don’t recognize exactly how much you can’t do, you can’t make other people happy. For example, when you’re working alone and you come up with an idea, if you think that it’s good, you should look at it objectively and doubt whether or not it’s actually interesting. When you ask other people their opinions and they tell you it’s interesting, you should wonder whether they’re just trying to encourage you and whether it’s truly interesting. There is a huge difference between critiquing yourself and cynically doubting encouragement and not doubting yourself at all, thinking the best of your ideas. You need the mental toughness to discern that and be the first one to doubt your own ideas. TOM (Ryota): This is a question from a fan. “What motivates you when you’re creating an anime?” Ms. Ishizuka, you just mentioned how you want to show your ideas to the world. Ishizuka: I believe everyone thinks that. Nakamoto: The actual act of making anime is extremely difficult, but getting reactions like, “I was moved!” or, “I cried!” or, “I loved it!” is what makes us happiest. Actually, when I see warm comments like that or get good reviews, I feel relieved that our labor was rewarded and there have been times where I cried (laughs). Ishizuka: Our audience is using their precious time and money, so we make these titles wanting them to get something out of it. Therefore, being told that the audience properly received what we were trying to give them really makes me happy that we created it. TOM (Ryota): Are you able to personally experience the reactions of fans, including those overseas? Ishizuka: I’ve participated in events in Asia, the United States, and Europe. I get the numbers for business, but I don’t really have chances to personally hear the reactions in my daily life, so I’m really happy I’m able to go to events both domestic and international and see people’s reactions in person. People outside of Japan tend to be pretty extroverted, so when I meet people, they’re so affectionate that I feel like they’re going to hug me. Of course, I do feel a lot of affection from Japanese fans when I meet them, too. I believe that Japanese people are shy, but they express their thoughts so strongly to me that I really understand how much affection they feel. I don’t feel a difference in passion between domestic and international fans. Recently, in international events, cosplay has been really popular. I think women with nice figures who cosplay characters wearing skimpy outfits like Steph or Jibril from No Game No Life are really cool (laughs). TOM (Ryota): I feel like No Game No Life is pretty popular overseas, too. [caption id="attachment_251731" align="aligncenter" width="560"] ©榎宮祐・株式会社KADOKAWA刊/ノーゲーム・ノーライフ ゼロ製作委員会[/caption] Ishizuka: It is! No matter what country I go to, No Game No Life is surprisingly popular. There are often people wearing shirts that say “I ♥ Humanity.” The main characters are siblings who don’t work or go to school, but I guess they’re universally relatable (laughs). TOM (Ryota): The last thing I want to ask is another fan question. “Is there anything fans can do?” Since we’re in an era of social media, the opportunities for fans to get in touch with creators have been on the rise. Ishizuka: It’s true that support from fans is our main source of energy, so just telling us something simple like, “I like this anime,” makes us extremely happy. Having the charms of one title spread throughout the world becomes an important opportunity for our next title. I feel that now fans have more ways to participate, like making fanvids on video sites. Each and every action like that is a strong voice of support and helps motivate us. TOM (Ryota): This interview project is connected to another project where we collect the messages from fans and make them into a poster to give directly to the studio, so it might be useful in that regard. Nakamoto: If there’s anything that comes out of direct communication, it’s that we can encourage each other. I think it would be good if it can be positive on both sides, regardless of country. We have limits to our imagination, so for a project like this, we’d love for fans to tell us what kind of title they’d like to see. Everyone’s support becomes our motivation for work. To be realistic, anime production companies always have budget problems and business is always tough. Madhouse isn’t an exception. I think every day that it would be really helpful to have others cooperate with us so we can make even better titles and improve our circumstances. We’re always accepting ideas! Ishizuka: We talked a lot, but I can continue to keep making titles as long as people tell me that our work moved them. Having more methods where people can tell us their thoughts makes me really happy. Don't forget to subscribe and support Tokyo Otaku Mode!

‘One day suddenly, a girl will appear who is in love with me.’ A teacher named Nobunaga continued to dream about a setup that’s right out of a galge. That’s when a 14-year-old girl named Kichou appears in front of him claiming to be his wife. She appears to have come from the Warring States period and has mistaken Nobunaga for the famous historical figure Oda Nobunaga. She then starts pressing him to conceive children with her…!? This romcom of a couple with a big fat age difference between a teacher obsessed with galge and a girl obsessed with the Warring States.

Just like in the games he plays, he dreams of being surrounded by girls with his own harem one day. However, he’s never even had a girlfriend, so his dream of a harem remains just that; a dream. Due to being a descendant of the great Oda Nobunaga himself and his own name, the students call him ‘Nobunaga-sensei.’" img='']

She misunderstands the kanji for the real Oda Nobunaga in her time and the one currently before her eyes, and believes that they are husband and wife and she is bound to the Nobunaga of this story." img='']

July 15, 2043. A system called ‘Embryo’ housing the VRMMO ‘Infinite Dendrogram’ has gone on sale. For various players, this original system is considered to be what we have arrived at after a multifarious, wait no, ‘infinite’ is better, pattern of evolution. Until now, VRMMO has been something that has not been able to be created. Widely regarded as something that was technically impossible, the moment Infinite Dendrogram was equipped with all of these factors, the movement as a whole was regarded as a massive step forward and the world was conquered.
