5 Best Memes from Fire Emblem: Three Houses

$

[ad_top1 class="mb40"]

Just like every modern Fire Emblem game, Three Houses has served as a delightful font of memes for the internet crowd. The characters are all vibrant and interact with each other in hilarious ways, the game’s mechanics can be unintentionally awkward at times, and many of the English voice actors have thrown their hats into the meme ring through Twitter and YouTube videos. But, among this sea of memes, which are the funniest and most creative? In no particular order, here are our favorites!

[ad_top2 class="mt40 mb40"]

1. Seteth Says

Archbishop Rhea’s second-in-command Seteth can be a bit of a stick in the mud. He’s baffled by Rhea’s insistence on trusting you with so many important matters and is comedically overprotective of his naïve sister Flayn... but, for some reason, he constantly asks you for favors. This has led to fans creating their own “missions from Seteth”, where he begs for your help with issues like Flayn getting griefed on the monastery’s Minecraft server or both of them being trapped in a McDonald’s playplace. Seteth’s voice actor Mark Whitten has even voiced several of them!

2. Upside Down Claude

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]

The game’s box art features the three house leaders striking poses in a triangle formation above main character Byleth, with Claude hanging upside down with his bow and arrow ready to fire. Of course, since Claude is a trickster and a bit of a troll, fans have decided that he likes hanging upside down at every opportunity just to annoy everyone else. One of our favorites is a fan art by Diyuki where post-timeskip Claude shoves Dimitri and Edelgard’s faces together to force the feuding friends to finally make up.

[ad_middle]

3. Joe Zieja Clowning Around on Twitter

Speaking of Claude, his memelord reputation grows more and more each day thanks to his English voice actor Joe Zieja. He made his own version of the upside-down Claude meme (doing a handstand while Dimitri and Edelgard’s voice actors hold him up), started a “war” on Twitter after hearing that the Black Eagles were the most popular house, and riffed on timeskip Dimitri’s edgy demeanor by doing an impression of him in silly scenarios. He’s truly a treasure to the Fire Emblem community, and we can’t wait to see what madness he gets up to next.

4. Sneaky Eating Challenge

Inspired by a challenge video invented by K-pop group Red Velvet, Anime Impulse’s YouTube channel held a “sneaky eating challenge” with a handful of voice actors from Three Houses (those of Ignatz, Claude, Dimitri, Dorothea/Shamir, Petra, Ferdinand, Seteth, and Flayn). They had to survive a classroom lecture from “Byleth” while eating as many snacks as possible without getting caught. Highlights include Ferdinand’s VA Billy Kametz inhaling an entire Fruit Roll-up in five seconds, Dorothea’s VA Allegra Clark singing “hoes mad” to the tune of Carmen, and Seteth’s VA Mark Whitten correctly listing all of the saints with a smug look on his face. We highly recommend it!

5. Parody Twitter Exchanges

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="kotaku.com" url="https://kotaku.com/fan-creates-hilarious-dead-on-tweets-by-fire-emblem-t-1837619442" ]

A fan on Twitter called Coolfest1999 (real name Annie) created an entire fake log of tweets between the students and faculty of Fire Emblem: Three Houses. Everything, from the profile pictures to the handles to the typing styles, is spot-on and gut-bustingly funny. We particularly love Claude commissioning a risqué portrait of himself from Ignatz, Raphael drawing his friends, Felix getting banned for threatening Dimitri and Ashe online, and Byleth somehow tweeting from a fish. Check these logs out – they’re endlessly entertaining!

Final Thoughts

We also enjoy any and all memes about Dimitri’s edgelord attitude, the peppy gatekeeper, and Flayn’s love for fish. But which are your favorites? Let us know in the comments, and thanks so much for reading!

[en]What You Need to Know: [/en][es]Lo que necesitas saber: [/es]

  • KOG Games today announced some massive updates coming this month to KurtzPel, including a new karma (weapon) called Fallen Light. Scroll down below for a closer look at the new weapon, along with PvP/PvE changes that have been made!

[en]Source: [/en][es]Fuente: [/es]Official Press Release

New Karma – Fallen Light

The new Karma is a magic cannon named "Elemental Buster" and takes on the role of a long-range magic slayer. Unlike other long-range Karmas, this Karma does not gain any auto-targeting assistance, and all shot projectiles will follow the player's aim. With the addition of a new karma, some changes are being made to the Karma system. Chasers will now be able to acquire Dual Soul and Sacred Guardian Karma with significantly reduced CP (in-game currency). The max growth of Karma will be increased from three to five and new skills will be taught through the new Karma UI instead of NPCs; chasers will be able to learn new skills and abilities by leveling up their karma.

PVP Changes

PVP Season 2 will begin with some big changes. In order to judge the Chaser's ability on many different aspects of PVP, Chasers will no longer be able to select certain modes when matchmaking. However, once matched with opponents, players will be able to change their weapon and skills before the match starts. Before, players were afraid of their ranks decreasing during the season and stopped doing Official Probatio after reaching a certain rank. From Season 2, players will be rewarded based on the highest ranking achieved during the season, so you no longer need to be afraid of ranking down and can continue to try your best to achieve the highest rank. As fun as it is to rank up to a higher rank, many players felt frustrated whenever they lost. In order to assist with this, points lost upon losing a match will decrease and also the number of stages required to rank up will be decreased to 3 instead of 5. PVP Missions will no longer be separated by Practice and Official Probatio. Instead, they will now be separated to Duel Mission and Challenge Missions. Duel Missions will match players from 3 to 5 Vs, and there will be no rank decreases if a match is lost. However, because of that, players will only be able to reach up to Rank A in this mode. There will also be new and bigger maps to accommodate the 5 vs 5 option. 2 New Deathmatch Maps and 1 new Conquest Maps will be added.

PVE Changes

PVE will now be separated in to two categories: Group Mission and Daily Mission. Group Mission will focus on fighting random enemies with 3 to 4 party members and the Daily Mission will have a designated enemy you fight with 6-player teams on each day.

New Items

A Season Pass has been added to the existing Season Level system. When the Battle Pass is activated, players will receive additional rewards while also receiving the rewards for Season Level. The Season Pass will provide greater rewards than the purchase price such as Season Pass Exclusive Costumes and Weapons. Other new items include: Magic Stone allows players to apply stats to Weapon and Costumes Settia Costume (Invisible Costume) for Shirt and Pants Character Name Change Ticket Character Appearance Change Ticket Basic Motion Change Item Players will now acquire different items from extracting items. All existing Essence items will be removed and automatically exchanged for the new items. See here for more details.

System Changes

A new inventory function and UI will be added so players can check all their items. A mailbox system will be added to be used for event rewards and compensations. A new currency, called DP, will be added and will be received by clearing missions. A new shop that uses CP will be added. A new in-game cash shop that uses KP will be added. To learn more about the changes coming in 2020, visit the KurtzPel Steam page.

Top 10 Best Fantasy Anime of the 2010s [Best Recommendations]

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="NEODAI-35588" text="" url="" ]

As we enter a brand-new decade, it’s a good time to look back at the world of anime in the 2010s. Within the fantasy genre, trends skewed strongly toward isekai after 2012’s smash hit Sword Art Online changed the way we view RPG-style fantasy worlds. It spawned an endless horde of imitators, as well as some genuinely intriguing shows that subverted the conventions we’d come to expect. Outside the tidal wave of isekai, long running shounen anime like The Seven Deadly Sins, Magi, and Fairy Tail held the banner of traditional fantasy, while bold newcomers like The Ancient Magus’ Bride and Made in Abyss blew us away with their richly detailed worlds. Now, without any further delay, let’s count down the best fantasy anime of the 2010s!

10. Tensei shitara Slime Datta Ken (That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime)

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="BCXA-1412" text="" url="" ]
[en][information_general item1 = "Episodes" content1="24" item2="Aired" content2="October 2018 – March 2019" post_id=""][/en]
[es][information_general item1 = "Episodios" content1="___content1___" item2="Emisión" content2="___content2___" post_id=""][/es]

With a title like “That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime”, you might expect this anime to be a mindless isekai parody with no redeeming value other than a few good jokes. That’s certainly what we thought at first, but as the story progressed throughout its 24 episodes, it gradually revealed itself to be a wholesome tale about one little slime who builds a thriving community with his newfound friends. We particularly love the detailed worldbuilding (like how each nation Rimuru travels to has different politics, tools, and gossip) as well as the tsundere dragon Veldora who starts him off on his journey in the first place. It’s not exactly an innovative masterpiece that upends the entire genre, but That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime is still one of our favorite fantasies in years.

9. Mahoutsukai no Yome (The Ancient Magus’ Bride)

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="crunchyroll" url="http://www.crunchyroll.com/the-ancient-magus-bride" ]
[en][information_general item1 = "Episodes" content1="24" item2="Aired" content2=" October 2017 – March 2018" post_id=""][/en]
[es][information_general item1 = "Episodios" content1="___content1___" item2="Emisión" content2="___content2___" post_id=""][/es]

English and Welsh mythology doesn’t tend to get much representation in anime, but The Ancient Magus’ Bride embraces it wholeheartedly. Chise Hatori has always been able to see magical creatures, but the constant isolation from her peers and the loss of her mother have left her as a depressed husk of a person. She sells herself to a magical black market, where a skull-faced magician named Elias takes her under his wing as his apprentice... and bride! Although the storytelling leaves a bit to be desired (especially towards the end), this anime is a must-watch purely for the enchanted settings that Chise explores. Everything, from Elias’ cottage home to the forbidden woods where dangerous fae dwell to the vast dragon hatchling grounds, teems with so much life that you feel just like you’re there with her. We wish we could step through the screen and live in that world ourselves!

8. No Game No Life

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="sentai" url="" ]
[en][information_general item1 = "Episodes" content1="12" item2="Aired" content2=" April 2014 – June 2014" post_id=""][/en]
[es][information_general item1 = "Episodios" content1="___content1___" item2="Emisión" content2="___content2___" post_id=""][/es]

Illustrious gamer duo Sora and Shiro find themselves sucked into the world of Disboard, where all conflicts are resolved through games. They quickly take a liking to this new reality and strive to unite its 16 warring races so they can rule over Disboard as gods, but they’ll have to take down everyone in their path with high stakes fantasy games if they wish to make that dream come true. Madhouse crafts a surreal, but beautiful atmosphere with its vibrant use of neon colors that complement our protagonists’ mercurial personalities. Yes, they’re smug and overpowered, but when their victories are this fun to behold, who cares about tactics and power balancing? Oh, and by the way, this anime has JoJo references – enough said.

7. Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo! (KonoSuba: God’s Blessing on This Wonderful World!)

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="B019GX9CHI" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]
[en][information_general item1 = "Episodes" content1="10" item2="Aired" content2="January 2016 – March 2016" post_id=""][/en]
[es][information_general item1 = "Episodios" content1="___content1___" item2="Emisión" content2="___content2___" post_id=""][/es]

This comedic take on the isekai genre comes from Natsume Akatsuki, who also wrote the source material behind this year’s wrestling isekai Hataage! Kemono Michi. Needless to say, the man has a solid grasp on fantasy-tinged humor, with a particular emphasis on jokes that are so stupid they wrap back around into being hilarious. KonoSuba follows a group of adventurers who act more like sitcom protagonists or obnoxious D&D players than proper heroes – Kazuma is a sarcastic newbie who’s been freshly imported from the real world after a pathetic death, Aqua is a useless goddess, Darkness dreams of being ravaged by monsters, and Megumin is a chuunibyou mage who refuses to learn any spells other than “explosion”. The combination of their wild personalities makes this anime a blast to watch again and again, so be sure to watch it with friends every chance you get!

6. Violet Evergarden

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="PCBE-55902" text="" url="" ]
[en][information_general item1 = "Episodes" content1="13" item2="Aired" content2="January 2018 – April 2018" post_id=""][/en]
[es][information_general item1 = "Episodios" content1="___content1___" item2="Emisión" content2="___content2___" post_id=""][/es]

Violet has only known combat for her whole life, having been used as a tool of war until she lost her arms trying to save her commanding officer. Now living in a new town with a pair of prosthetic arms, she takes a job as an “Auto Memory Doll” to ghostwrite heartfelt letters for people who can’t do it themselves. She hopes that, by writing down the emotions of others, she can discover what her commanding officer really meant when he said that he loved her... Kyoto Animation has always been known for its gorgeous animation work, and Violet Evergarden is perhaps the pinnacle of their portfolio so far. Every frame captures movement, expression, background, and lighting in such stunning clarity that it looks more like a Makoto Shinkai movie than a 13-episode weekly series. The story itself takes time to pick up steam, but once it does, you’ll need multiple boxes of tissues to get through this beautiful tear-jerker of an anime.

[ad_middle class="mb40"]

5. Houseki no Kuni (Land of the Lustrous)

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="TBR-27353D" text="" url="" ]
[en][information_general item1 = "Episodes" content1="12" item2="Aired" content2=" October 2017 – December 2017" post_id=""][/en]
[es][information_general item1 = "Episodios" content1="___content1___" item2="Emisión" content2="___content2___" post_id=""][/es]

It’s monumentally rare for an all-CGI anime to be considered good, let alone amazing, but Land of the Lustrous defies all expectations. Studio Orange spared no expense making sure that the gem-like people who populate this Buddhism-inspired fantasy world shimmered and sparkled and shattered exactly as they should. The unnatural smoothness of CGI movement actually works in this anime’s favor, creating graceful body movements and breathtaking camera angles that perfectly punctuate this anime’s more intense scenes. When combined with the top-tier voice acting and unique worldbuilding, Land of the Lustrous shines brightly amongst its competition.

[ad_top2 class="mt40 mb40"]

4. Shingeki no Kyojin (Attack on Titan)

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="crunchyroll" url="https://www.crunchyroll.com/attack-on-titan" ]
[en][information_general item1 = "Episodes" content1="25" item2="Aired" content2="April 2013 – September 2013 " post_id=""][/en]
[es][information_general item1 = "Episodios" content1="___content1___" item2="Emisión" content2="___content2___" post_id=""][/es]

Attack on Titan punches up the classic zombie apocalypse story (which was riding high in the early 2010s thanks to The Walking Dead) with steampunk elements, disturbing monster designs, and political intrigue to create a brand-new fantasy world that instantly drew viewers in from the very first episode. Gigantic warped humanoids called Titans terrorize a population of walled-in people, believed to be the last humans on Earth, while they fight back with what little resources they have. The first season was a rollercoaster ride fueled almost entirely by hype action sequences, while the later seasons expanded the world and delved deeper into character motivations. And even though Attack on Titan took some time to develop into a truly fascinating series, the latest revelations from this year’s Season 3 Part 2 have set it up for a well-earned climactic conclusion in 2020.

3. Re: Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu (Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World-)

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="B01DRX3F8A" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]
[en][information_general item1 = "Episodes" content1="25" item2="Aired" content2=" April 2016 – September 2016 " post_id=""][/en]
[es][information_general item1 = "Episodios" content1="___content1___" item2="Emisión" content2="___content2___" post_id=""][/es]

We’ve seen wholesome isekai, funny isekai, and full-on parody isekai, but what about a dark and disturbing isekai? Re: Zero does for the isekai genre what Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica did for magical girls – it shows what disastrous things would actually happen if a real person lived in that kind of fantasy world. Our protagonist Subaru possesses the power of “Return by Death”, where he can return to a specific point in time whenever he dies in this new environment (just like a save point). But since he feels the excruciating pain of death every time, and he physically can’t tell anyone about his plight, his fun fantasy adventure becomes much more difficult. Re: Zero is best known for its romantic subplots (particularly with the blue-haired oni maid Rem), as well as its copious violence. It’s not flawless by any stretch of the imagination, but it’s a unique show that has had a huge impact on the isekai genre for the foreseeable future.

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="B01EUHA85K" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]

2. Fate/Zero

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="B06XVF31MX" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]
[en][information_general item1 = "Episodes" content1="13" item2="Aired" content2=" October 2011 – December 2011" post_id=""][/en]
[es][information_general item1 = "Episodios" content1="___content1___" item2="Emisión" content2="___content2___" post_id=""][/es]

The Fate franchise has had its ups and downs over the years, especially in terms of its anime adaptations, but Ufotable’s version of Fate/Zero is unanimously considered to be one of the best things ever to come out of the series. Set 10 years before Fate/Stay Night, it chronicles the Fourth Holy Grail War – a no-holds-barred battle royale between ancient warriors who fight for the wishes of their sworn masters. While the story is largely inaccessible to uninitiated viewers, the compelling ensemble cast and gorgeous battle scenes are worth watching all on their own. Saber’s climactic fight against Caster and Gilgamesh is one of the modern masterpieces of action animation, proving that Ufotable should be the choice for all Fate adaptations to come in the future (and maybe some other stand-alone series like Demon Slayer so that non-Fate fans can enjoy their work as well).

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="crunchyroll" url="http://www.crunchyroll.com/fatezero/episode-14-bloody-battle-on-the-mion-river-596217" ]

1. Made in Abyss

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="sentai" url="" ]
[en][information_general item1 = "Episodes" content1="13" item2="Aired" content2="July 2017 – September 2017" post_id=""][/en]
[es][information_general item1 = "Episodios" content1="___content1___" item2="Emisión" content2="___content2___" post_id=""][/es]

In a decade filled with repetitive isekai trend-chasers, truly original fantasy anime stand out from the chaff. And Made in Abyss – a melancholic tale of two young explorers descending into a massive pit of fantasy monsters unlike anything we’ve ever seen – is perhaps the best of them all. Delver-in-training Riko and her new cyborg friend Reg set out on a mission to find her mother at the very bottom of the Abyss, a mysterious place from which nobody has ever returned. Their struggles with the treacherous environment and hostile fauna lead them to meet a cursed humanoid creature named Nanachi, whose endless quest to put her suffering friend Mitty to rest forms the emotional backbone of the second half of the season. It’s bitter, raw, beautiful, and our favorite fantasy anime of the 2010s.

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="sentai" url="" ]

Final Thoughts

We also loved Magi for its boundless sense of adventure, Yona of the Dawn for its strong female lead, and The Seven Deadly Sins for its vibrant ensemble cast. And even though its actual quality is suspect, we have to acknowledge Sword Art Online for its massive influence on the isekai genre. What did you think of our list? Did we miss any of your favorites? Let us know in the comments, and thanks so much for reading!

In What Order Should You Play Fire Emblem: Three Houses?

[ad_top1 class="mb40"]
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="NEOGDS-129919" text="" url="" ]

The Fire Emblem series is no stranger to branched storytelling—Shadows of Valentia featured two interlocking tales and Fates forced you to choose between two opposing armies (with a secret third option available afterward), but Three Houses tops them all with four separate story campaigns. Whether you choose to lead the Black Eagles (which has two paths), the Blue Lions, or the Golden Deer, you’ll find a 40+ hour route ahead of you with different twists and turns. So then, what’s the best way to play Fire Emblem: Three Houses? If you’re only going to go down one route, which one should it be? And which full order offers the best story experience? Here’s what we prefer!

[ad_top2 class="mt40 mb40"]
[ad_middle]

Azure Moon (Blue Lions)

The Blue Lions’ route is the best “starter pack” for Three Houses. It features lovable characters with struggles and backstories that tug at your heartstrings, gives house leader Dimitri a fully realized character arc, and doesn’t bother with most of the esoteric lore elements that other routes get into. The battle maps are usually fairly straightforward as well, so it’s perfect for a beginner to get their feet wet with the turn-based strategy gameplay. If you’re only going to play this game once, Azure Moon is the way to go.

Verdant Wind (Golden Deer)

The Golden Deer house is full of scoundrels and weirdos, so it makes perfect sense that their route isn’t as concerned with the overarching war plotline as the others are. Instead, it focuses on the history of Fodlan and its neighboring countries, as well as the secrets the church seems to be hiding from the common people. House leader Claude always has something up his sleeve, but he’s a reliable companion who never drags you or his house down. For a chaotic ride through the deeper lore of this world, be sure to play Verdant Wind next.

Crimson Flower (Black Eagles – Edelgard)

Edelgard, the house leader of the Black Eagles, is usually the main antagonist of the other routes. She strives for a peaceful, unified Fodlan that dispenses with the discriminatory Crest system and the Church of Seiros, but that noble goal is soured when you realize that she’s willing to cut down anyone in her way to accomplish it. But, if you choose to join her in this endeavor, she simmers down considerably and adopts a more tactical approach (even though she still kills plenty of people). Crimson Flower is best played after at least one of the other routes since it serves as more of an inside look at Edelgard’s perspective rather than a fully fleshed out campaign. Still, the Black Eagles themselves are great characters and this route has some amazing battle maps, so it’s definitely worth playing!

Silver Snow (Black Eagles – Church of Seiros)

Now that you’ve grown attached to the Black Eagles through Crimson Flower, you can pick back up with their story by choosing to side with the Church of Seiros instead of Edelgard. This route shines a light on main character Byleth’s past, finally giving some closure about where they came from and how they’re related to Rhea and the other church members. It also delves into some of the same lore as Verdant Wind, so it’s highly advisable not to play the two routes next to each other. If you adore the Black Eagles and want a final wrap-up of the story’s loose ends, give Silver Snow a shot.

Final Thoughts

Each of the four routes is entertaining and fulfilling in its own way, so this order is by no means absolute. But if you’re planning on sinking hundreds of hours into this game (like we did...), it’s good to have a roadmap. What did you think of our order? Which route did you play first in Fire Emblem: Three Houses? Let us know in the comments, and thanks so much for reading!

Is it possible... there are some ulterior motives at play?

    Character Breakdown

In Azur Lane: Crosswave, characters are broken down between playable characters and support. Support characters can join a player's fleet as AI using support skills and attacks during battle. Playable characters can act as your main fleet and/or support fleet. Playable Characters: Can be controlled during battle. Secretary Ship: Appears on main menus when not engaged in battle. Secretary Ship can be a playable character or support character. Having a ship as your secretary can lead to some interesting events to happen! Support: Can be selected to assist in battle. When certain conditions are met, support characters can perform different support skills such as attacks, buffs, and heals. Playable characters can also be deployed as support characters, lending a different set of skills than if they were controlled.

    Playable Characters

Ayanami One of the oldest and most powerful members of the Sakura Empire. Her battles are ruthless, akin to that of a demon god, but off the battlefield, she tends to be quiet and reclusive. She doesn't seem like she has any interest in anything, but when she does find something that catches her attention, she will pour her very best into it. She is currently training herself for the Joint Military Exercise.

    [sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]
Illustrious A member of the Royal Navy who carries herself with grace; her countenance is one of a refined lady. Others may sometimes view her as being a bit slow, but the fact is that she is always kind... the total embodiment of a royal. She styles herself in accordance to the historical nature of the vessel she represents with an emphasis on her upper body, which captivates many who lay their eyes upon her. She joins the Joint Military Exercise as a proud member of Royal Navy, assisting her allies along the way to victory.
    [sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]
    [sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]
Ajax A slightly sadistic individual who refers to anyone she's interested in as "little piggy." She is fond of teasing others, no matter their rank, and has a tendency to be outspoken. Her actions cause others to run amok. Even still, her talents are worthy, and she is a fantastic asset in any mission she embarks upon. This particular pedigree she offers is why she's been chosen to take part in the Joint Military Exercise.

    [sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]
Enterprise As the strongest aircraft carrier in the Eagle Union, she is known for the many battles she has won against enemies both on the ocean and in the sky. Everyone knows how powerful she is, which makes her a fantastic representative of the Eagle Union in the Joint Military Exercise. She will sacrifice herself for her allies and constantly seeks new rivals. As she has sensed something amiss during the Joint Military Exercise, she has begun investigating what is really going on behind the scenes. This has caused her bond with a certain someone to deepen over the course of this exercise.

    Full-Time Secretary Ship/Battle Support

Akashi A repair ship who displays cat-like features, such as playing with cat toys. Sometimes, many doubt themselves as to whether Akashi really is a cat. Despite her unique personality, she is the best mechanic Sakura Empire has to offer, and she provides technical support with her many interesting inventions. She also has a taste for money, and this talent shines through her business skills (which often blur the line of whether she's working for the Sakura Empire or herself). She is assisting the Joint Military Exercise as their announcer this time around.

    [sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]
Achilles Achilles is a Leander-class light cruiser and a friend of Ajax. She seems absent-minded, but at the very least, she doesn't exhibit a sadistic nature like Ajax. She's surprisingly proactive, and decided to join the Joint Military Exercise with Ajax to help support her fellow sister cruisers.

    [sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="crunchyroll" url="http://www.crunchyroll.com/ping-pong-the-animation/episode-9-im-gonna-go-cry-653283" ]

Psychological anime are all about examining the mind, whether it’s the struggles of an individual or the collective unrest of an entire group. Oftentimes, these shows will subtly (or not-so-subtly) comment on issues in the real world through their storytelling, making them excellent time capsules for future generations to look back on. So how did the genre tackle the hot topics of this decade? Let’s take a look together at the best psychological anime of the 2010s!

    [ad_top2 class="mt40 mb40"]

    10. Gyakkyou Burai Kaiji: Hakairoku-hen (Kaiji: Against All Rules)

    [sourceLink asin="B01CLD0YVI" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]
    [en][information_general item1 = "Episodes" content1="26" item2="Aired" content2="April 2011 – September 2011" post_id=""][/en]
    [es][information_general item1 = "Episodios" content1="___content1___" item2="Emisión" content2="___content2___" post_id=""][/es]

This sequel to the critically acclaimed Kaiji: Ultimate Survivor is a fascinating look into the psychology of gambling from the perspective of a normal guy caught up in the madness of it all. Kaiji finds himself in crippling debt yet again and ends up in an underground labor camp, doomed to toil there for 15 years unless he can gamble his way back to the surface. Each confrontation feels unique, with clever opponents and new twists to familiar activities. 2017’s Kakegurui attempted something similar, but Kaiji captures the stress and excitement of gambling better than any other show this decade.

    9. Mirai Nikki (The Future Diary)

    [sourceLink asin="B005PK0ZEQ" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]
    [en][information_general item1 = "Episodes" content1="26" item2="Aired" content2="October 2011 – April 2012" post_id=""][/en]
    [es][information_general item1 = "Episodios" content1="___content1___" item2="Emisión" content2="___content2___" post_id=""][/es]

Twelve unwitting people enter into a death game where the winner becomes the new god of the universe. Each of them has a diary (usually in the form of a cell phone) that predicts the future in some specific way, which they use to outwit and kill their fellow players. Mirai Nikki is best known for its secondary protagonist Yuno, the ultimate yandere who gaslights her “boyfriend” Yukiteru into abandoning his friends and family to help her win the game. Although the storytelling can be rocky at times, the anime’s novel twist on the standard death game plot as well as Yuno’s sheer star power make Mirai Nikki a must-watch for fans of the psychological genre.

    8. Ping Pong the Animation

    [sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="ANSB-6281" text="" url="" ]
    [en][information_general item1 = "Episodes" content1="11" item2="Aired" content2="April 2014 – June 2014" post_id=""][/en]
    [es][information_general item1 = "Episodios" content1="___content1___" item2="Emisión" content2="___content2___" post_id=""][/es]

Ping Pong the Animation is ostensibly a high school sports anime, but it eschews almost all tropes of the sports genre to focus on the deeply personal struggles and ambitions of its two main characters. They’ve dedicated their entire lives to table tennis, pursuing greatness and pouring all of their hopes and dreams into tournaments that happen once a year. This series comes from the mind of Masaaki Yuasa, director of Tatami Galaxy and Devilman: Crybaby, so it’s no surprise that the art style is deranged beyond all belief, but the distorted faces and sketchy movements help visualize the intense emotions that Smile and Peco feel during their matches. Keep an open mind and give this anime a shot!

    7. Kiseijuu: Sei no Kakuritsu (Parasyte -the maxim-)

    [sourceLink asin="B00QTHHY84" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]
    [en][information_general item1 = "Episodes" content1="24" item2="Aired" content2="October 2014 – March 2015" post_id=""][/en]
    [es][information_general item1 = "Episodios" content1="___content1___" item2="Emisión" content2="___content2___" post_id=""][/es]

Parasyte updates the classic ‘80s manga of the same name to a modern-day setting, where the increasingly connected world sets the stage for a story about xenophobia and what it means to be human. Alien parasites descend upon the Earth, taking over human bodies and feeding on unsuspecting people. The idea that anyone, whether they’re a total stranger or your own mother, could be a parasite in disguise is what drives the absolute horror of this series. It neatly mirrors how the internet and social media bring us together, but also drag out the worst in people. For a similar setting update of a classic horror manga, also check out the previously mentioned Devilman: Crybaby!

    6. Psycho-Pass

    [sourceLink asin="B00HFC30A8" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]
    [en][information_general item1 = "Episodes" content1="22" item2="Aired" content2="October 2012 – March 2013" post_id=""][/en]
    [es][information_general item1 = "Episodios" content1="___content1___" item2="Emisión" content2="___content2___" post_id=""][/es]

For fans of Black Mirror-style technological dystopia stories, Psycho-Pass should definitely be on your plan-to-watch shortlist. New police inspector Akane Tsunemori enters into the world of the Criminal Investigation Division, which uses the Sibyl System to target people with criminal intent and stop them before they hurt anyone. She quickly learns that this draconian approach to justice may be doing more harm than good and that the Sibyl System’s mysterious origins could be to blame... With an all-star production team at the helm (Gen Urobuchi wrote it, Akira Amano designed the characters, and Yugo Kanno penned the score), Psycho-Pass was pretty much guaranteed to be a success. Its second season lets it down, but the first is a work of art that more than makes up for any shortcomings.

    [ad_middle class="mb40"]

    5. Mawaru Penguindrum (Penguindrum)

    [sourceLink asin="B00AO05AAQ" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]
    [en][information_general item1 = "Episodes" content1="24" item2="Aired" content2="July 2011 – December 2011" post_id=""][/en]
    [es][information_general item1 = "Episodios" content1="___content1___" item2="Emisión" content2="___content2___" post_id=""][/es]

From Kunihiko Ikuhara (of Revolutionary Girl Utena fame) comes this dramedy anime about two brothers whose terminally ill sister is taken over by a dominatrix spirit that resides within a penguin-shaped hat they bought for her at an aquarium. They must find the titular “penguindrum” to save their sister, but along the way they learn much more about each other and discover what fate has in store for them. Ikuhara also directed this year’s Sarazanmai, which also explores the connections between people through a copious amount of slapstick and animal antics, but Mawaru Penguindrum is our favorite of his works from this decade. Even if you’ve watched it before, try it again – you’re sure to discover something new!

    4. Yakusoku no Neverland (The Promised Neverland)

    [sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="ANZB-14364" text="" url="" ]
    [en][information_general item1 = "Episodes" content1="12" item2="Aired" content2="January 2019 – March 2019" post_id=""][/en]
    [es][information_general item1 = "Episodios" content1="___content1___" item2="Emisión" content2="___content2___" post_id=""][/es]

The Promised Neverland is the perfect example of an inherently silly series that still manages to be dramatic and engaging every step of the way. Three orphan children live happily with their “siblings” in an idyllic countryside home, but soon discover that they’re actually being raised as meat for demons! They use their wicked cunning to devise a plan of escape, but their adult overseer is always one step ahead... The conflict between our main characters and their “Mom” plays out like something out of Death Note or Code Geass, complete with melodramatic confrontations and 5D chess mental maneuvers. And yet, the characters are so well written that none of it feels overly cheesy. We can’t wait for the second season next year!

    3. Boku dake ga Inai Machi (Erased)

    [sourceLink asin="B01E1JVT5K" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]
    [en][information_general item1 = "Episodes" content1="12" item2="Aired" content2="January 2016 – March 2016" post_id=""][/en]
    [es][information_general item1 = "Episodios" content1="___content1___" item2="Emisión" content2="___content2___" post_id=""][/es]

Satoru Fujinuma possesses a magical ability called “Revival” that transports him back several minutes in time whenever something dangerous happens around him. But when he’s accused of murdering his mother, he’s sent back 18 years to his childhood and discovers that the disappearance of one of his classmates may be connected to his mother’s murder. In order to return to his own time, he must unravel the mystery and save the victims from their deadly fates. Erased is less of a supernatural story and more of a mystery thriller that uses time travel to get the plot going. The characters are realistic and compelling, the animation is absolutely stunning, and it’s difficult to predict what will happen next. The ending has caused some controversy due to its odd pacing, but the series overall is a fascinating psychological study well worth sinking your teeth into.

    [sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="crunchyroll" url="http://www.crunchyroll.com/erased/episode-5-getaway-691801" ]

    2. Mahou Shoujo Madoka★Magica (Puella Magi Madoka Magica)

    [sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="B004INGZAE" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]
    [en][information_general item1 = "Episodes" content1="12" item2="Aired" content2="January 2011 – April 2011" post_id=""][/en]
    [es][information_general item1 = "Episodios" content1="___content1___" item2="Emisión" content2="___content2___" post_id=""][/es]

Magical girl anime are generally seen as harmless fluff for young children, providing little more for the adult viewer than cute character designs and some entertaining fight scenes. And while some franchises like Precure and Lyrical Nanoha have subverted those expectations in one way or another, Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica was the anime that really turned the entire genre on its head. This show examines how fighting life-threatening monsters on a daily basis for some cause they don’t fully understand would actually affect young girls in the real world. The ethereal animation and music create a foreboding atmosphere that sets the stage for some of the most intensely emotional scenes of any anime this decade. Many imitators have tried to repeat its success, but none can match Madoka itself.

    [sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="SVWC-70281" text="" url="" ]

    1. Death Parade

    [sourceLink asin="B00S1LOS9Y" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]
    [en][information_general item1 = "Episodes" content1="12" item2="Aired" content2="January 2015 – March 2015" post_id=""][/en]
    [es][information_general item1 = "Episodios" content1="___content1___" item2="Emisión" content2="___content2___" post_id=""][/es]

Decim runs a bar in the afterlife where he hosts two souls at a time and forces them to play demented parlor games to determine who will be reincarnated and who will be sent to the void. It’s a simple premise, but Death Parade makes the most of it by giving each character (both the one-episode guests as well as Decim and the other recurring staff) their own realistic motivation and compelling storyline. We were in tears by the end of most episodes, especially the ones that dealt with extreme topics like suicide. The worldbuilding is original and compelling, the animation and voice acting are superb, and the storytelling has everything we could ever want out of a psychological anime. It’s truly a masterpiece.

    [sourceLink asin="B01FQBTELI" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]

    Final Thoughts

We also loved Kaguya-sama: Love is War for its unique premise of a psychological romantic comedy, Zankyou no Terror for its biting commentary on modern Japanese culture, and Beastars for its dark look into the psychology of predators and prey. What did you think of our list? Did we miss any of your favorites? Let us know in the comments, and thanks so much for reading!

Forget the fan service; Winter Polaris leaves a much deeper, meaningful impact.
    Specs (PC)
OS: Windows 7 or Higher Processor: 1.2 GHz Pentium 4 or Higher Memory: 1 GB RAM Graphics: Integrated Graphics or Better DirectX: Version 9.0c Storage: 2 GB available space

    Who it Caters to

Winter Polaris caters to fans of visual novels first and foremost. It’s not a competitive game for winning and losing; it's an artistic game that is meant to tell a story. For visual novel fans, Winter Polaris stands apart as a serious story that doesn’t use humour and fan service to appeal to the audience. Instead, it’s targeted at gamers who are looking for a more intense narrative with a focus on character development and a heavy plot. That means Winter Polaris also caters to people that wouldn’t normally play a visual novel because they don’t want just fan service and pandering; this game is not that. Instead, people who like serious anime, manga, and novels are the ones who would like Winter Polaris the most. It caters to anyone looking for a deeper story, characters they can get invested in, and a game they can’t necessarily predict every step of the way.

    What to Expect

Winter Polaris is a mystery visual novel that tells two strange stories. Both stories involve mysterious girls that have unknown pasts that are somehow connected to the main character. You can expect mysteries that are fairly hard to predict and will keep you clicking to the next page, wondering what will happen next and pushing forward to the end. Like a good book, Winter Polaris keeps you guessing and reading, so you can expect a lot of guessing, tension, and entertainment all along the way. Winter Polaris is a visual novel, so it’s important to expect visual novel gameplay. That means no fighting, health bars, inventory, experience, etc. Rather, it’s like reading a book that is fully illustrated and voice acted for you. You are just along for the ride, taking the place of the main character as the story unfolds before you. While you can expect to feel like a part of the story if you let yourself get immersed in the narrative, you do not actually affect the story itself at all. Especially if you aren’t used to playing visual novels, it’s important to expect this going into it.
    [ad_top2 class="mt40 mb40"]

    Story

As stated above, Winter Polaris is not one story, but two. The first story has the same name as the game, Winter Polaris. It’s set in present-day Tokyo when a strange phenomenon begins to sweep across the world. Those affected by this “disease” literally seem to disappear into thin air. The protagonist of Winter Polaris is desperate to escape and not become the next victim, so he flees from the city into the mountains. He lives there for years, believing he is the only one who was spared. Eventually, desperately lonely, he ventures back into the ruins of Tokyo. There, he unexpectedly finds a girl waiting for him. And to make things even stranger, she says she is immortal. What does she want with him? The second story is called Sweeper Swimmer. The main character, Elena, lives in a rural seaside town where she works as a courier. When she goes to make some deliveries by sea after a big storm, Elena discovers a girl floating in the water, barely alive. Elena scrambles to rescue the girl, and the girl drops a strange object made of glass. Upon further inspection, Elena discovers the object is beyond any technology and craftsmanship she has ever seen. Who is this mysterious girl, and what is the strange item she has with her?

    Gameplay

Winter Polaris is a visual novel, so gameplay is simple. For those inexperienced with visual novels, it’s basically like reading a book. But instead of just text, the story is accompanied by full illustrations, colourful characters, and voice acting. That’s exactly what Winter Polaris does. Gameplay consists of reading or listening to the story as it plays out on the screen alongside varying still animation pictures. All you have to do is click when you’re ready to “turn the page,” or more literally, advance to the next screen. There’s no experience or levelling up or bosses or death to worry about. You simply step into the shoes of the main character and experience the story at your own pace. It’s simple for anyone to play! Winter Polaris fully supports Steam’s achievements so you can compare your progress with your friends and revel in your own achievements.
    [ad_middle class="mt40 mb40"]

    Honey's Gameplay Consensus:

While many visual novels are just meant to be funny or sexy, Winter Polaris is anything but. It’s a very serious visual novel setting out to tell a mysterious story about loneliness and the point of existence. And it does it very, very well. While many visual novels fall victim to meandering storylines and fan service, Winter Polaris stays on track. It keeps you wanting to go to the next screen to find out what happens. It makes you feel truly invested in the characters. And it will undeniably tug at your heartstrings at least once before you reach the ending.

    Honey's Pros:

    • Winter Polaris isn’t actually that long, so it’s not such a daunting task for busy people. Some visual novels are a huge time commitment to get through, but Winter Polaris isn’t one of them.
    • Winter Polaris is simple enough that literally anyone can play it and enjoy the experience without stress. All you have to do is click!
    • The art in Winter Polaris is beautiful. You may find yourself occasionally lingering on the screen to enjoy it (that is if you can keep yourself from devouring the mystery narrative long enough to do so!).
    • Winter Polaris is really emotional. It does an incredible job of making you actually care about the characters and their narrative, and tells a story dealing with very real human feelings. If you’re sensitive, be sure to have tissues ready, because Winter Polaris will stir up the emotions of everyone.

    Honey's Cons:

    • Winter Polaris isn’t very long. We listed it as a pro too, but there are two sides to the coin. For some visual novel fans, the short length will be disappointing. Others may not feel like the game was long enough for the cost.
    • Winter Polaris deals with some dark themes that may be off-putting to some gamers (like suicide and gore). While not necessarily a con for everyone, it’s good to know before starting the game in case that’s a deal-breaker for you.
    • Winter Polaris has a very specific presentation style that takes adjusting to. It uses thick black borders with a thin line of art in the middle, unlike most visual novels that have full-page illustrations.
    • Winter Polaris does not distinguish which character is talking when no avatar is displayed. If you don’t know their voices or aren’t paying close attention, it’s easy to get confused about who is saying what.

    Honey's Final Verdict:

Winter Polaris is a game with a really great narrative. It has two stories for the price of one, and they both are interconnected in ways that you would not expect and may not even notice at first. The themes are deep ones and are likely to stir up a range of emotions in players - both positive and negative. The characters are well-developed, and the pacing keeps you wanting to play until it’s finished. The art is very beautiful though admittedly small between its thick, black borders. Overall, if you like visual novels or dark, serious anime, books, or manga, Winter Polaris is definitely worth a play-through. You may have never heard of it before you start, but you won’t quickly forget it when you finish. Have you played Winter Polaris? What did you think of it? Do you want to try it out now? Do you usually play visual novels, or are you going to give this one a chance since it’s not your usual VN? Drop us a question or comment before you leave!

5 Best Anime Originals of the Past 5 Years

Most anime are based on manga, light novels, games, or other source material, but on rare occasions, we get shows that tell completely original stories. At their best, anime originals keep the audience guessing every week and craft engaging tales that end with satisfying conclusions. Today, we’ll be counting down our picks for the five best anime originals of the past five years, starting with the Winter 2015 season and ending with Fall 2019. Let’s ring in the new decade together by celebrating the amazing anime we’ve come to love since 2015!

    5. Zombieland Saga

    [en][information_general item1 = "Episodes" content1="12" item2="Aired" content2="October 2018 – December 2018" post_id=""][/en]
    [es][information_general item1 = "Episodios" content1="___content1___" item2="Emisión" content2="___content2___" post_id=""][/es]

Zombieland Saga puts a spin on the tired old idol formula by filling its singing group with zombies! Seven girls, each plucked from a different era in Japan’s past, must band together to save the faltering Saga district from obscurity while somehow hiding the fact that they’re walking corpses. There’s plenty of wacky fun to be had (especially when their boisterous manager is in the room), but this anime also tackles more serious issues like culture shock, imposter syndrome, and even transgenderism. Be sure to give this one a watch and look out for season 2 in 2020!

    4. Yuri!!! on Ice

    [en][information_general item1 = "Episodes" content1="12" item2="Aired" content2="October 2016 – December 2016" post_id=""][/en]
    [es][information_general item1 = "Episodios" content1="___content1___" item2="Emisión" content2="___content2___" post_id=""][/es]

While it’s a more-or-less straightforward sports anime on paper, Yuri on Ice carves out a niche for itself in a number of ways; it focuses on an individual sport with older protagonists, features gorgeous ice skating animation for many of its competition scenes, and portrays a gay male relationship between the main characters in a realistic and sympathetic manner. Japan has a tendency to either fetishize homosexual relationships or sweep them under the rug, so when Yuri and Victor actually kissed and had a real romance, it was a very big step for LGBT representation in the medium. Yuri on Ice is a piece of history, and a great story to boot.

    3. Sora yori mo Tooi Basho (A Place Further Than the Universe)

    [en][information_general item1 = "Episodes" content1="13" item2="Aired" content2="January 2018 – March 2018" post_id=""][/en]
    [es][information_general item1 = "Episodios" content1="___content1___" item2="Emisión" content2="___content2___" post_id=""][/es]

So many fantasy stories yearn to create a sense of boundless adventure, but A Place Further Than the Universe shines brighter than them all with its tale of four high school girls who travel to Antarctica. Shirase, the daughter of an Antarctic researcher who went missing three years ago, decides to go to the icy continent in search of her mother with the help of her friends Kimari, Hinata, and Yuzuki. It’s a heartwarming story about chasing your dreams and enriching your youth, but with its fair share of bittersweet moments that remind you of the harshness of the real world. This anime is criminally under-watched, so catch up on it before the new year!

    [ad_middle class="mb40"]

    2. Kimi no Na wa. (Your Name.)

    [en][information_general item1 = "Episodes" content1="1" item2="Aired" content2="August 2016" post_id=""][/en]
    [es][information_general item1 = "Episodios" content1="___content1___" item2="Emisión" content2="___content2___" post_id=""][/es]

You may have gotten tired of hearing about this movie breaking box office records and winning awards across the board, but sometimes things are popular for a reason. Kimi no Na wa is a beautifully crafted film by Makoto Shinkai (of 5 Centimeters Per Second fame) about two teens whose fates are intertwined through time and dreams. As they desperately search for each other in the real world to figure out what’s going on, a heartwarming romance blossoms between them. It’s only two hours long, so queue it up for your next date night!

    1. Death Parade

    [en][information_general item1 = "Episodes" content1="12" item2="Aired" content2="January 2015 – March 2015" post_id=""][/en]
    [es][information_general item1 = "Episodios" content1="___content1___" item2="Emisión" content2="___content2___" post_id=""][/es]

Death Parade has all of the aspects we love about anime original series; a creative premise, vibrant animation, an unpredictable and gripping story, and an ending that we’ll remember forever. Quindecim is a quiet bar in the afterlife where two souls at a time arrive to be judged. Will they be reborn into a new life, or will they be cast into the void? The bartender, Decim, has the souls play a game where their darkest secrets and deepest feelings come to light, exposing them for what they truly are. Death Parade has such incredible depth to its world, and both its recurring and one-off characters are so interesting that you can’t help but be enraptured by them. It’s a gleaming gem of an anime that you definitely shouldn’t miss.

We also loved Carole and Tuesday’s charming yarn about two young musicians trying to make it in the world, Sarazanmai’s demented exploration of connections between people, 91 Days’ hard-hitting gangster drama, and... whatever Children of the Whales was actually about. We can’t wait to see what the 2020s have in store for anime originals! What did you think of our list? What are your favorite anime originals of the past five years? Do you disagree with any of our picks? Let us know in the comments, and thanks so much for reading!

What are Ema as seen in Kamisama Hajimemashita (Kamisama Kiss)? [Definition;Meaning]

As the new year comes to pass, we see many anime portray the activities of celebration in Japan. Little wooden plaques known as Ema represent the wishes for the coming year. Often hung in shrines, and more recently temples, these plaques are given to the gods as wishes for the coming year. While this is a Shinto tradition, the blend in Japanese history of Buddhism and Shinto has blurred and Ema can now be found in both temples and shrines across the country. Ema are found often in anime, whether at a New Years shrine visit or being processed by the gods in anime such as Kamisama Hajimemashita, they grace our screens in a number of ways. Ema are an important part of Japanese culture and an irreplaceable tradition for the new year.

    [ad_top2 class="mt40"]

    What are Ema?

Available for purchase at most shrines, these small wooden plaques portray two kanji. Zodiac images are the most popular nowadays on Ema but this was not always the case. Initially during the Nara period, horses were the common animal to see on ema because they were considered a vehicle for the gods. As Ema evolved, they came to feature other animals that were unique to each shrine and this is still common today alongside the zodiac figures. Ema are not only found at New Years but are common throughout the year for a variety of circumstances from childbirth to exams. To complete the Ema, you write your wish on the plaque (the front on top of the picture is sometimes customary or the back on the blank side so as not to soil the beautiful art) and hang it on the shrine for the gods to answer your prayers. Once the new year has passed, it is common to burn the plaques in order to help the wishes come true and to help clear the shrine.

    Ema in Kamisama Hajimemashita

When Nanami Momozono goes to Izumo, she encounters a great many gods from a variety of shrines. While part of going to Izumo is enjoying yourself and snacking on delicious food, there is also the more spiritual aspect of it. Each god must process the Ema that were submitted to their shrine each year. While Nanami quickly progresses through her own measly pile of wishes, the other gods fail at completing their work. Such is the case with the goddess, Inaho. She is lazy and sleeps through her time to process her own Ema. Poor Nanami is dragged into her work but feels accomplished when the mountain of Ema has finally been completed. While many anime show the view from the human worshipers, Kamisama Hajimemashita gives us a different look into the other side of Ema that must be completed by the gods.

Ema are a part of Japanese culture that has been passed down for generations. These wishes are not only important to the individual but bring religion into their daily life. Next time you are in Japan you should definitely stop by a temple and take part in this centuries old tradition. We hope that you have enjoyed this article and have learned just a bit more about Japanese culture. As always, if you have any questions or comments please feel free to leave them in the comments section below.

5 Most Exciting Battles in Fire Emblem: Three Houses

The Fire Emblem series uses a turn-based strategy system for its gameplay, arming the player with a dozen or so characters (each with their own strengths and abilities) to fight an opposing army in a chess-like arena. The latest game in the franchise, Fire Emblem: Three Houses, lives up to its predecessors with its exciting battle maps that pit your characters against nigh-impossible odds and require careful planning to master. Let’s check out some of our favorites!

    [ad_top2 class="mt40 mb40"]

    5. Field of the Eagle and Lion

This mock battle during the first half of the game lets all houses of Garreg Mach monastery test their mettle against each other in a massive three-way fight. Your task is to defeat as many enemies as possible and take out the other two house leaders before they accomplish the same thing. If you haven’t played the other routes before, this might be your first chance to see the other houses’ students in action and see if you want to recruit them! Afterward, everyone celebrates with a feast in the dining hall. So sweet!

    4. Reunion at Dawn (Azure Moon)

Directly after the timeskip on the Blue Lions route, main character Byleth wakes up from their five-year coma and hurries to the abandoned Garreg Mach to find none other than Dimitri waiting for them. He’s haggard and hell-bent on revenge, so he pulls Byleth into a battle where the two of them fight off some thieves skulking around the grounds. Initially, you feel that there’s no way you can kill so many enemies with just two units, but one by one, the other Blue Lions return to the battlefield to keep their promise of returning for the Millennium Festival. The story doesn’t just tell you that you’re ecstatic to have them back – you feel it in the gameplay as well!

    3. War for the Weak

Dedue’s paralogue has you allying with Kingdom forces to subdue rebels from Duscur, but your real objective is to defeat the rebels and send them away before the murderous Kingdom soldiers can kill them. The hilly terrain makes it incredibly difficult to save all of the Duscur citizens, but if you can at least get to their leader, Dedue convinces him to leave and the conflict dissipates. Later on, the Duscur people show their support by saving Dedue from execution during the timeskip, so it’s imperative that you complete this paralogue if you want him to live!

    [ad_middle]

    2. Fodlan’s New Dawn

The final chapter of Verdant Wind (the Golden Deer route) brings Three Houses’ lore to the forefront when King Nemesis and his ten elites march towards the monastery on a quest for vengeance. You’ve only ever heard about these historical figures in stories before now, but here they are in front of you with death in their eyes! You must defeat Lamine to dispel the magical swamp and Odessa to stop the Divine Beast reinforcements, as well as take down the other elites to break Nemesis’ defenses and kill him once and for all. It’s a thrilling end to this lore-filled route and one of the best final bosses in the game!

    1. To the End of a Dream

However, one battle manages to top even “Fodlan’s New Dawn”; “To the End of a Dream”, the final fight of Crimson Flower (Edelgard’s route). With Rhea’s true identity exposed and her forces dwindling, she orders Catherine to set fire to the city of Fhirdiad so your army can’t seize it. You must charge your way through the burning capitol, taking out the last of the church and Kingdom’s soldiers until you reach Rhea and establish your dominance once and for all. It’s heart-rending to kill the people you once called friends and co-workers just because they’re on the opposite side of a national conflict, and it hits even harder because they’re following orders from a madwoman who’s blinded by rage. But, if you emerge victorious, you’ll finally unite Fodlan and dispense of the discriminatory Crest system for good.

We love the gameplay and story integration that the best battles in Three Houses provide. Especially after the timeskip raises the stakes significantly, the fights feel like real struggles between life and death in the midst of a war that nobody can ever truly win. What did you think of our list? Which battles in Three Houses do you think are most exciting and engaging? Let us know in the comments, and thanks so much for reading!

Tenki no Ko (WEATHERING WITH YOU) Introduction and Story

Tenki no Ko—translated as WEATHERING WITH YOU—focuses on a strange romance met in an even stranger way. Our movie opens up with a young woman—later known as Hina—who follows a beam of light from the sun to a dilapidated building. When Hina reaches the roof of said building, she finds a strange shrine and prays for the rain to let up. As Hina passes the shrine entrance, a strange phenomenon occurs, bringing her body to the sky and above the clouds! We then skip ahead to a young man named Hodaka Morishima who has decided to run away from his island village to pursue a new life in Tokyo. While enjoying the rain on the deck of the ship, a passing storm hits nearly knocking him overboard! Luckily, a man named Keisuke Suga saves Hodaka from falling into the sea and gives the young boy a business card in case Hodaka needs him again. Hodaka attempts—briefly—to live off the streets and in an internet café but quickly runs out of money and is left homeless. One fateful afternoon, Hodaka ends up in a McDonalds and is given a burger by Hina who just so happens to work there. Hodaka ends up relying on Keisuke when his money dries up and finds out he’s the head editor of a gossip magazine full of “odd” stories. Working as a writer/errand boy, Hodaka ends up finding happiness with Keisuke and his “thought to be mistress” Natsumi. A short while after this “extravagant meal” from Hina and gaining his new job, our young man sees Hina being dragged to a shady looking venue and saves her by running off with her and then using a gun—he happened to find in a spilled over trash bin—to scare the men away. A friendship is born between the two and Hodaka learns of Hina’s powers to control the weather using prayer. The two friends create a website to make use of Hina’s gift and alongside her brother—Nagi—the trio begins to make money as they banish the rain temporarily for those who request their services. As the tale continues, we learn that the rain ceases to stop and continues pouring with Hina slowly getting tired from using her power. Making matters worse, while at her apartment, the police arrive to question Hina as to the whereabouts of Hodaka. Due to him obtaining the gun he found and using it—as well as now being searched as a missing person by his family—Hodaka is considered on the run. Worse yet, Hina’s age is questioned by the police and they make moves to get her and Nagi into a foster family. This incident fuels Hodaka to make the decision to run off with Hina and Nagi—as Hodaka is falling more in love with Hina as time passes—and the two search for a means to live using money given to Hodaka from Keisuke who now wants Hodaka to leave. The trio struggles to find a place and even nearly gets arrested by the police but they eventually arrive at a hotel escaping the oncoming floodwaters from a powerful storm that’s hitting Japan. As the trio rest, Hina shows Hodaka the after-effects of her abuse on her powers as she now has translucent spots on her body as she gets “closer to the sky”. Even after the prayer that they stay together forever, Hina ends up being taken to a sky world—sacrificed as predicted by an earlier revelation in the movie—leaving Nagi and Hodaka stunned. Their troubles continue when the police arrive at the hotel, arrest Hodaka and take Nagi into protective custody. Thankfully, Hodaka is able to escape from the police precinct to go to the dilapidated building where Hina gained her supernatural gift. Despite numerous struggles, Hodaka arrives at the shrine and is able to save Hina but at a cost that forever changes the world. What is this cost you might be asking? Well, that is where our spoilers will end as WEATHERING WITH YOU is a movie you must witness to get the full grasp of this deep tale of love and pain. For now, we will go further with our review to show you reasons why you absolutely must witness WEATHERING WITH YOU for yourself and reasons you might want to skip it. Though to be honest, our reasons to skip are minor ones and truly you’ll be hard-pressed to find any reason not to sit down and watch WEATHERING WITH YOU. Yes folks, it’s that incredible of a movie.

Why You Should Watch Tenki no Ko (WEATHERING WITH YOU)

    1. Animation at Its Best!

If you’re a fan of all things Makoto Shinkai—which you should be—then you know one of his greatest strengths in the anime film world is animation. Yet again, Shinkai creates a film that blew us away by not only looking gorgeous but having animation that can’t be beat by many films if any. Want a good looking anime film to watch? Then go check out WEATHERING WITH YOU!

    2. Simple Narrative with Deep Themes

Shinkai’s various films like Kimi no Na wa and Byousoku 5 Centimeter might seem like simple romance tales but within these stories lies a deeper meaning with a simple narrative. We doubt anyone will leave WEATHERING WITH YOU not understanding the base story of romance and what it means to sacrifice for said love but many viewers will dig deeper and begin to unravel a complex agenda hidden in the film. Those elements we won’t spoil but we highly recommend keeping your minds open when watching WEATHERING WITH YOU to see themes not usually tackled in anime romance films.

    3. Supernatural Done Right

Works by Shinkai often involve supernatural themes—not all of his films but a majority—and WEATHERING WITH YOU isn’t going against that concept. However, as crazy as the supernatural elements are in WEATHERING WITH YOU, none of them feel abused or overly exaggerated. Yes, a girl controlling the weather with prayer might seem outrageous but is it that unbelievable to think prayer can’t cause a passing storm to weaken even for a brief moment?

    1. Morbid but Sweet Ending

Makoto Shinkai is no stranger to creating endings that don’t always seem pleasant. WEATHERING WITH YOU has a happy ending in terms of a relationship being truly forged but the grand outlook on the world due to this blossoming romance can be considered…morbid. This ending will definitely cause some discussions in the anime community but it also might cause some viewers to leave the theater with a bit of a sour taste in their mouth.

    2. Underused Cameo Appearances

Fans of Kimi no Na wa—Your Name—might be happy to see two very well-known characters make appearances in WEATHERING WITH YOU. We here at Honey’s Anime loved seeing them as well but kind of felt like they were thrown in just for that shocked cameo appearance feeling and not really for any other purposes. Will this really make you not want to watch WEATHERING WITH YOU? No, but it will make you sigh when you realize they have little input on this tale in the grand scheme of things.

    3. Prepare for the Emotion Train

Now as silly as this might come off—but it’s something we hear often—some people don’t like Shinkai’s works because they are too emotionally draining. That being said, if you’re easily pushed away from a film due to the possibility that you’ll leave in tears and have your heart pulled through your chest you might want to skip on WEATHERING WITH YOU.

    Final Thoughts

    [sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="UPCH-20520" text="" url="" ]

There will be a lot of debate whether WEATHERING WITH YOU is better than Kimi no Na wa and/or weaker and we can honestly say they both are pretty incredible films. Makoto Shinkai has truly mastered the art of taking simple themes of romance/life and making it deeper than even imaginable. WEATHERING WITH YOU deals with concepts of homelessness, longing, sacrifice, humanity and environmental decay/change all while being wrapped up in a supernatural charged romance plot that will make you smile and cry in equal beats. If you notice above, even our reasons to skip WEATHERING WITH YOU list isn’t really that strong as it’s hard to find fault with such an expertly crafted film. In our minds, WEATHERING WITH YOU is a must-see film this year and we are just happy we got to see it early thanks to AnimeNYC! When this film hits the big screens this coming January, you’d best grab a ticket so you can sit down and witness yet another Makoto Shinkai masterpiece! Are you excited to watch WEATHERING WITH YOU this January or did you also happen to see it early at AnimeNYC?
